VANCOUVER - The Vancouver Whitecaps are starting to display a quality that teams often have trouble finding — mental toughness. Vancouver overcame an early deficit for the second straight game Wednesday in defeating Chivas USA 3-1 in Major League Soccer play. The Whitecaps (6-5-4) posted their second consecutive win, something they had not done since the first two games of the season, and moved ahead of the Los Angeles Galaxy into fifth place in the Western Conference. Camilo paced the Whitecaps with two goals, including the winner, after Tristan Bowen opened the scoring early for Chivas (3-9-2), which has not won since beating Vancouver on March 30. "Its been a good run and its been a huge past couple games," said defender Jordan Harvey, who scored his third goal in four game for Vancouver. "It puts us in playoff contention, and we just need to keep picking up points." The Whitecaps have won four of six games and appear to have overcome a tendency of squandering leads. They have rebounded strongly after settling for disappointing draws to Portland in league play and Montreal in the final of the Amway Canadian Championship. Harvey, meanwhile, is just glad to contribute offensively. "I dont really know how to explain it," Harvey said of his scoring outburst. "Chances seem to fall right to me, and Im fortunate to put them in." Added Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie: "Hes just got a great work ethic. Hes just fantastically fit, and can go up and down that line all day, and we encourage him to get forward." Camilo extended his scoring streak to three games and matched the seven goals he produced all of last season. "Ive been training harder, and doing a better job of positioning myself," said Camilo, who also assisted on Harveys goal. But Rennie said another key reason has also factored into his success. "Hes always been a talented player," said Rennie. "Hes always been a danger in front of goal, but I think hes become much more of a team player, where he creates opportunities for other people, where hes all about the entire group and all about the club. Because of that, more opportunities have come his way." The game was turned on its head in first-half added time when Harvey and Camilo scored two minutes apart to give the Whitecaps a 2-1 lead. Chivas saw its winless skid extended to nine games despite making an early impression on new coach Jose Luis Real, who made his MLS coaching debut after taking over from the fired Jose Luis Sanchez Sola. Bowen opened the scoring in the seventh minute from the top right side of the Vancouver box off a deflection. Harvey evened the score in the second minute of first-half added time when he put shot off Chivas defender Carlos Borja after Camilo inadvertently flicked on a pass from Russell Teibert. Harvey also scored in Saturdays 4-3 victory over New England, when the Whitecaps overcame a 2-0 deficit, and has seen his playing time increased since veteran defender Alain Rochat was traded to D.C. United. Two minutes after Harveys goal, Camilo took a pass from Teibert, sidestepped a Chivas defender and fired a low shot into the left corner of the net. The goal Camilo extended his scoring streak to three games and matched the seven goals he produced all of last season. He completed the scoring in the 81st minute, firing a shot off a defender after Harveys rebound off a Chivas player came out to him. Rennie credited Harvey for showing determination after adversity. "Hes mentally tough, and I think thats a characteristic that weve got in this team," said Rennie "Theres been games when weve not played so well or moments when things have gone our way, but weve kept going, and I think that Jordan recognizes that, and I think our team recognizes that, too." Meanwhile, Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy said his club is continuing to find its way. "It felt like we really lost this game in those three minutes (at the end of the first half)," said Kennedy, who added the crowd of 16,130 at B.C. Place Stadium was a factor on Camilos deceive goal. "That second goal came off just a technical mistake and the (Whitecaps) were flying," he said. "Thats part of having the home-field advantage. The fans are, obviously, phenomenal here." ORLANDO, Fla. -- A study of this seasons bowl-bound teams shows while there continues to be high academic success for the student-athletes overall, the disparity in graduation rates between black and white students remains a problem at the highest level of college football.The Institute for Diversity and Ethics in Sport found in its latest study released Monday that black students graduated from the 80 bowl-bound programs had a 68 percent graduation success rate compared to 87 percent for their white counterparts. Those numbers represent a two percent increase for both groups a year ago. Overall, 75 percent of student-athletes are graduated from the bowl-bound schools, up from 2015 when the number was 73 percent.The gap between black and white student-athletes is 19 percent for the second year in a row.As a whole, 99 percent of the teams participating in the bowl season had at least a 50 percent graduation success rate, which is a slight drop from 100 percent of the 80 postseason-bound programs last years. Idaho was the only school that scored less than the 930 on the NCAAs Academic Progress Rate compared to the 100 percent last year.Scoring higher than 930 on the APR is equivalent to a 50 percent graduation rate.Unfortunately the disparity between the black and white players has been the case consistently in these reports, said Richard Lapchick, the author of the study. The graduation rates of both black and white football players continue to creep up a little bit and they are actually at level that 15 years ago I probably would have said Im pretty happy if these were the rates.But the fact the gap has persisted is whats most troubling.It wasnt part of the study but Lapchick found black football players on bowl-bound teams graduate at a higher rate when their coach is also black. The number jumped to 71 percent from 68 percent when the coach is also black. The overall graduation rate also improved from 75 percent to 84 percent under black coaches.The four teams selected for this seasons College Football Playoff -- Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State and Washington -- all had above average records. Alabama is graduating 80 percent of its players, Clemson 84 percent, Ohio State 74 percent and Washington 78 percent.The NCAA created the APR system in 2004 to more accurately measure student-athletes academic success and graduation rates. The Graduation Success Rate, developed in 2005, measures graduation rates of Division I schools after four years and includes students transferring into the institutions. The GSR also allows schools to subtract athletes who leave before graduation, as long as they would have been academically eligible to compete if they remained.NCAA statistics were used in the study. The APR data does not include data from the 2015-16 academic performances of the teams in the study but instead uses four years of data ending in the 2013-14 school year. There are only three weeks left in the NFL season, and the race for the last few playoff spots is intense. Yet the scheduling for Week 15 worked out so that theres only one game with major in-or-out ramifications for both teams: Lions at Giants. Detroit is almost guaranteed a spot with a victory (98.4 percent odds), and the Giants would be pretty close (93.8 percent odds). A loss would drop each teams odds a lot closer to 50-50.However, nearly every other game has at least one team that is either virtually assured a playoff spot or is completely out of the running.Tennessees playoff odds are much stronger with a win in Kansas City on Sunday, but the Chiefs are pretty much in whether they win or lose. HOCKENHEIM, Germany -- Nico Rosberg set the fastest time during the opening practice session for the German Grand Prix as Mercedes held an advantage of more than one second over their nearest rival.Rosberg set a 1:15.517 on new super-soft tyres, 0.326s faster than the best effort by teammate Lewis Hamilton just moments later and over 1.150s faster than Sebastian Vettels Ferrari in third. The Colorado Avalanche and Calgary Flames made a two-for-two swap, with the Avalanche getting a member of their 2001 Stanley Cup champion team back in the fold. Numbers Game looks at the deal sending Alex Tanguay back to Colorado. The Flames Get: RW David Jones and D Shane OBrien. Jones, 28, is coming off the worst season of his pro career, during which he scored three goals and nine points in 33 games, the lowest rates of his career after signing a four-year, $16-million contract last summer. While Jones has never been a great puck possession player, he did at least take on some heavy minutes for the Avalanche last season, with tough opposition and more starts in the defensive zone. A two-time 20-goal scorer, Jones will play in Calgarys top nine forwards and is likely to score on better than 4.8% of his shots, his career-low set last season but, given Calgarys current crop of centres, it would be asking a lot for Jones to immediately bounce back to 20 goals or 40 points and, for $4-million per season, thats probably on the low end of what should be expected in order to provide value. 29-year-old Shane OBrien had his role reduced, with his ice time down from 19:13 per game in 2011-2012 to 15:30 last season, while playing only 28 of 48 games, but his puck possession stats were quite good when he did play. OBrien is 6-foot-3, 230 pounds and provides toughness. His 853 penalty minutes in seven seasons ranks 11th in the league over that time. OBrien does figure to get more regular playing time in Calgary, and is under contract for two more years, at $2-million per season. If he gives the Flames 17-18 minutes a night, with a little bite to his game, then OBrien will be doing his part. The Avalanche Get: LW Alex Tanguay and D Cory Sarich. Since returning to Calgary in 2010, Alex Tanguay has recorded 145 points; only Jarome Iginla had more for the Flames over the last three seasons. Tanguay, 33, hasnt had strong puck possession numbers in recent seasons, but hes also done some heavy lifting, facing tough matchups and starting more shifts in the defensive zone, factors which contributed to his career-low minus-13 rating last season. A rare high percentage shooter, Tanguay has scored on 18.8% of his shots in his career, highest among active players and he scored on a career-high 25.0% of his shots last season. Moving back to Colorado, where he spent the first six years of his career, should allow Tanguay to play more of a complementary role, and while its not likely that he can score on such a high percentage of shots again, Tanguay could, playing with more talented centres, generate more shots on goal than the 1.10 per game he did last season, his lowest shot rate since his rookie season. Theres no reason to expect Tanguay to get better in his mid-30s, but its entirely reasonable to think that he can play a top six role for the next couple seasons. Hes under contract for three years and $10.5-million, so if he manages to do it for each of those three seasons, then that would be ideal for the Avalanche. 34-year-old Cory Sarich has been even more of a part-time player than OBrien, playing more than 16 minutes per game once in the last four seasons, including a career-low 14:52 per game last season, dressing for 28 of 48 games in 2013. Sarich is big, physical and has played 972 (regular season plus playoff) games in his career. Even though the Avalanche have major needs on defence, Sarich isnt the answer to those questions, so he likely fills the seventh or eighth spot on the depth chart. His contract, at a $2-million cap hit, expires at seasons end. Colorado gets a slight edge on this deal, in my view, because they save a little money and have a better chance of getting adequate production out of Tanguay over the next three seasons.
