PORTLAND, Ore. -- With two goals in the first 11 minutes, the Galaxy stole a 2-1 victory in Portland.Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes each scored for Los Angeles to put an end to the Timbers nine-game undefeated streak before a national TV audience.Zarek Valentin scored for the Timbers, who were stung when they lost veteran defender Nat Borchers to what appeared to be a left ankle injury late in the first half. Borchers was a key piece to the Timbers team that won the MLS Cup last season. It was the Galaxys fourth straight victory in Major League Soccer play, and fifth overall. Los Angeles (9-3-8) is third in the Western Conference, while Portland (7-7-8) is in sixth.Neither team added to the score in the second half.We definitely wanted to come out aggressive and I thought we did that. We didnt know what the second half had in hand, but the sun came out, turf got hotter. But I thought the substitutions were phenomenal. The guys that came on were just great and amazing and it worked well for us, Zardes said. The Timbers were already without defender Liam Ridgewell, who has a strained right calf and will also miss the MLS All-Star Game against Arsenal next week in San Jose. The Galaxy were without defender Ashley Cole because of a sore hamstring, and midfielder Steven Gerrard, who has a leg injury. The Galaxy went ahead early with Keanes easy tap in off Giovani dos Santos cross in the seventh minute. It was Keanes seventh goal in 10 overall matches this season.Los Angeles extended the lead to 2-0 in the 11th minute on Zardes bouncing header. It took us a while to get going, and we didnt make the plays we needed, Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson said. The slow start was a letdown for the Timbers, who were coming off a big 3-1 victory over rival Seattle last Sunday. But Portland narrowed it to 2-1 before the end of the half with Zarek Valentins a hard shot from atop the box in the 41st minute. It was his first goal of the season.Give them credit, they pushed for the goal. I think our biggest mistake in the game was conceding a goal at the end of the first half. We could have been in position to, I wouldnt say sail through that game, but deal with it a little bit better in the second half, Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.A few moments later Portland suffered a major blow when Borchers was injured. It did not appear that the veteran defender was hurt by contact.Borchers could not stand after he was treated on the field and had to be stretchered off. Arena appeared to wish him well as he was carried to the locker room.Portland coach Caleb Porter said after the game he had no update on Borchers condition.Portlands early struggles on defense and the loss of Borchers came as rumors swirled concerning the Timbers interest in former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor, who was at the match.Portlands Darlington Nagbe got a good chance with a clear shot in the 86th minute but the ball sailed just over the crossbar. The Timbers also got a free kick late but was unable to score. The last time the two teams met the Galaxy knocked the Timbers out of the U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory at Providence Park in late June. Los Angeles has advanced to the semifinals of the competition, hosting FC Dallas at StubHub Center on Aug. 10.There was bad blood between the two teams stemming from a match earlier this year, during which Nigel de Jong tackled Nagbe.Nagbe, who has also been playing with the U.S. national team, sprained his ankle. De Jong was later given a three-game suspension by the league for the hit.The sellout crowd at Providence Park loudly booed de Jong when the lineups were announced before Saturdays match. It was the first soccer match for ESPNs SportsCenter On The Road. In a week in which there has been mild consternation in Australia about the state of the Galle surface, Angelo Mathews has made no apologies about what the visitors can expect at the SSC: It will turn again, he said - get used to it.With the islands ground curators directly employed by the board, Sri Lanka has long catered pitches to the teams needs. Against India last year, surfaces at the P Sara Oval and the SSC had seam and bounce, as it was hoped those qualities would enhance Sri Lankas chances of winning (as it happened, India won both matches).Against teams from further afield, and particularly Australia, tracks are made to spin, spin, spin.Australias cricketers have focused almost solely on their own performances. But it is clear that reports in the Australian press about pitch doctoring in Galle, have prompted indignation within the Sri Lankan team.We had to work really hard to win those two games, Mathews said. We played better cricket than them. Im hearing that the Aussies have not played good cricket, and the wickets were poor - I mean, come on, youve got to grow up. We play on the same wicket. Theyve got spinners and weve got spinners. Theyve fought really hard, but its just that our spinners have bowled extremely well. Our spinners have exploited the conditions and bowled better than them. Credit should go to the whole team, the way theyve worked extremely hard.Home-team advantage appears to be increasingly sought in Test cricket. Over the past two years, Sri Lanka has played on pitches in Christchurch and Hamilton that were so thickly layered in grass, they were almost indistinguishable from the remainder of the square. The pitch at Headingley, in May, had been another green top. And often forced to tour temperate climates in their early summer (thanks largely to economic considerations), Sri Lanka have also been made to play in the colder foreign venues, like Dunedin, Leeds and Chester-le-Street, to cite three examples from the past eight months. The SSC surface has lately ceased to be the wellspring of runs it has been in the past, and on the eve of the Test, appears at least as dry as the pitch at Galle. Sri Lanka have already confirmed their triple-spin attack - with allrounder Dhananjaya de Silvas offspin in support - will be set loose in the third Test as well. Its going to be a turner once again, Mathews said. SSC has traditionally been a very good, batting-friendly wicket. But in the last few games against South Africa and Pakistan, it did take a lot of turn. We hope that it will take a loot of turn again from day one, and we hope that it will be a spinners paradise.ddddddddddddn the batting front, the series win - and possibly some good catching - has bought openers Kaushal Silva and Dimuth Karunaratne another opportunity. Sri Lanka has recently become the most difficult country in the world to score runs as an opener, but Sri Lankas incumbent pair has nevertheless fallen short of the teams expectations. So far in this series, neither Silva nor Karunaratne has scored more than seven, in four innings apiece. Still, given their history of better performances overseas, Mathews said he and the selectors would grant them another chance. What the management and selectors think is that we can give opportunities to players who we believe can deliver, Mathews said. When it was tough in England, Kaushal fought really hard and showed his character. After two games, we dont want to throw a character like him away.Dimuth didnt score runs in England, but he had got a big hundred in New Zealand and he showed his character there as well. Hopefully, he can deliver and everyone will get through that rough patch.Dhananjaya de Silva had been one of the standout openers in first-class cricket this year, but as he is already settling in at No. 7, no other obvious opening candidates have presented themselves either. Mathews said the decision to retain Silva and Karunaratne had been made with a view to forthcoming foreign tours as well.If we have guys who have scored heavily outside the team, we can consider replacing the openers - but that has not happened, Mathews said. We have got to keep in mind that the South African series is coming in a few months time. We believe that this set of players can go to South Africa and do well. They are talented, and if they are given opportunities, they can come good.Mathews now has the opportunity to effect perhaps the most high-profile 3-0 whitewash for any Sri Lanka captain. They have three other 3-0 results, but those came against weaker Zimbabwe and Bangladesh teams, and a modest West Indies outfit propped up by mountains of Brian Lara runs. A whitewash against the worlds top-ranked team will likely be remembered fondly for years to come.We are extremely excited at the prospect, Mathews said. Weve trained harder than we had over the past two weeks, because we want to win it 3-0. Everyone is all geared up, and we havent taken the foot off the gas. ' ' '

British & Irish Lions assistant coach Andy Farrell believes they will face selection headaches when they draw up their squad for next summers tour of New Zealand while Rob Howley says they will need to score at least 30 points to beat the All Blacks.Warren Gatland unveiled three of his Lions backroom staff on Wednesday with Howley (backs), Farrell (defence) and Steve Borthwick (forwards) all confirmed and he also revealed his plan to add further specialists in due course. For Farrell, who is Irelands defence coach, he knows the Lions well having coached on their victorious 2013 series in Australia and he is relishing the challenge of touring again with the famous side. But Farrell -- who has beaten New Zealand twice as a coach -- is predicting the coaches will face a tough task to weigh up the balance of their squad with Six Nations influencing who will get the call.Northern hemisphere rugby is in a great place, Farrell said. Were going to be doing battle against each other in the Six Nations, in the New Year, whichll be great and as coaches were going to be watchhing each others teams.ddddddddddddWere going to have a headache after the Six Nations as there are going to be some top, top players that are going to be disappointed as theyre not going on the tour. So its going to be a super-exciting time for northern hemisphere rugby so lets get it started.Borthwick, part of the England coaching team, said there is the potential to build a great Lions forward pack while Howley, interim Wales coach, will be weighing up the contenders who could feature in the Lions backs division in New Zealand. From an attacking perspective, the modern Test game requires you to score 28 or 30 points and thats going to be the challenge for us going to New Zealand in May, Howley said. The intent and ambition will have to be there. You need two or three tries to just be competitive against New Zealand and Ireland showed the way in Chicago, scoring five tries. Thats going to be the challenge and as coaches we embrace it. ' ' '

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Albert Pujols finally agreed he should wait till next year. Pujols will miss the rest of the season to rest his injured left foot, the Los Angeles Angels announced Monday. The $240 million slugger gave up his hope to play again next month when the teams medical staff and front office advised him to avoid rushing back to the lineup late in the Angels dismal season. Pujols partially tore his left plantar fascia last month, and only recently got his foot out of a walking boot. While sitting out the past three weeks, Pujols repeatedly said he hoped to return at some point in September, even if the Angels remained hopelessly out of contention. He eventually acknowledged the plan made sense only as a salve to his pride. "Its not an easy decision, as competitive as I am," Pujols said at his locker before the Angels opened a series against Cleveland. "But I also understand that we (need) to look beyond the season." The three-time NL MVP hasnt played since July 26, when he partially tore his troublesome plantar fascia while running in Oakland. Pujols had been rehabilitating the injury with hopes of playing in September, but the struggling Angels inability to get into playoff contention made that plan increasingly pointless. Pujols, who has 492 career homers and 1,498 RBIs, consulted with owner Arte Moreno and general manager Jerry Dipoto before agreeing to shut himself down for the season. Moreno still owes Pujols $212 million over the next eight years in the third-biggest contract in major league history. "It was a decision of the organization, Arte and Jerry, because I dont make a decision here," said Pujols, who had career lows of 17 homers and 64 RBIs this year. "I put my uniform on and get ready to play. They said, This is whats best for the organization in the long run, and they came and brought it to me. And I just told them, Whatever you guys want to do, Im all for it. Its definitely hard, as I want to be out there, but I also understand that I cant be selfish and put myself out there." The injury has hindered Pujols all season, forcing the first baseman to be a designated hitter for 65 of his career-low 99 games. Pujols will finish with fewer than 30 homers for the first time in his remarkable 13-season career, alonng with career lows in batting average (.dddddddddddd58), on-base percentage (.330) and slugging percentage (.437). Pujols also had more than 150 hits in each of his first 12 seasons, ending the third-longest streak in modern history. Those numbers arent exactly encouraging for a player who will be 34 years old in January -- in fact, theyre a bit frightening. The Angels are determined to give Pujols every chance to get into ideal health for the spring. "The doctors think its the best course of action," manager Mike Scioscia said. "For Albert, everything would have to have been perfectly aligned for him to come back and play. I think by trying to get to that level, maybe there were some things that would have been at risk in setting the healing process back. I think that its a decision that everyone can be at peace with and get everyone ready for next year." Pujols has been diligent in his rehabilitation while still hoping to play this season. He even did 45 minutes of cardiovascular work Monday before announcing he was done for the year, and Scioscia is confident Pujols will be in top form by February when he reports to spring training in Tempe, Ariz. Its certain to be a long off-season for the Angels, all but certain to miss the playoffs for the fourth straight season despite their lavish payroll and sky-high expectations. Los Angeles has lost 23 of 34 heading into its series with the Indians, and most of Pujols teammates have been similarly disappointing. Josh Hamilton, who got a five-year deal worth $125 million from Moreno, began the week batting a career-worst .230 with 19 homers, 60 RBIs and career lows in slugging percentage (.425) and on-base percentage (.285). The Angels starting rotation has one of the majors highest ERAs, while their bullpen is one of the majors worst -- as is their team defence. With everything going wrong for the Angels this summer, Pujols decided to try to make things right in 2014. "Just look at it," Pujols said. "Unless in two weeks something happens and were only two or three games out ... is it worth it to come back and put yourself in a situation where you take that risk? Or just wait six or seven months and get yourself ready for spring training? Thats the decision we all came to." ' ' '

DETROIT -- Dave Dombrowski will see the results of his work when Saturday nights game between Boston and Detroit begins. Not his efforts on behalf of the Red Sox, where he is the chief executive, but his work of last July when he was still president, CEO and general manger of the Tigers.Dombrowski made three non-waiver deadline deals for Detroit near the end of last July that netted the Tigers three young starting pitchers -- Matt Boyd, Michael Fulmer and Daniel Norris.Boyd started for the Tigers against the Red Sox on Thursday, Fulmer was the starter Friday night and Norris was slated to be on the mound at the beginning of Saturdays contest.Detroit fired Dombrowski scant days after the deadline passed, but before the season ended Boston had scooped him up to run their organization. The Tigers began the season with none of the three starters Dombrowski acquired on their major league roster.Fulmer was kept in the minors to learn a changeup, but was brought up early because of an injury to another starter. He settled in after a handful of starts and has been with the team since. Boyd has been up and down a couple times this year but now appears to be up to stay.Norris had a so-so spring, got hurt, and has fought through a couple more injuries before recently rejoining the rotation.Theyve done well, Detroit manager Brad Ausmus said. Some of the young guys have done well. Fulmer was doing well already, Boyd has pitched well, Norris has pitched well.Weve still got time to go. Just because theyve done it so far doesnt mean its over. They just have to continue to do it.Norris (1-1, 3.47 ERA) makes his sixth start and seventh appearance of the season and will be looking to beat Boston for the first time in his short career.Norris, who has a nice mix of pitches but off-and-on control, is 0-1 with a 12.27 ERA against the Red Sox. He has pitched against them twice with one start, which was Aug. 7, 2015 when he allowed five runs on nine hits in 3 1/3 innings.Boston sends left-hander Drew Pomeranz (9-9, 2.99 ERA; 1-2, 4.59 with Boston) to face Detroit, the second time he has pitched against the Tigers this season.Pomeranz was making his second start with the Red Sox after being acquired in a trade with San Diego when he pitched against the Tigers on July 25. Detroit only got four hits and two runs in six innings off him but he still wound up as the losing pitcher.Pomeranz got his first win for Boston in his last start, allowing two runs on five hits at Cleveland over 7 2/3 innings. The Red Sox saw their bullpen give up a 3-1 lead in the eighth inning in losing Thursdays game to the Tigers 4-3.Weve had a number of guys with very some good performances, Red Sox manager John Farrell said. Weve had some inconsistencies. When youre in those games in which you feel like youre anywhere from three to six outs away from closing down, when those get away those can be a little bit more frustrating. Kent 184 for 3 (Northeast 66*, Billings 55) beat Sussex 182 for 8 (Finch 54, Coles 4-39) by seven wicketsScorecard Kent progressed to the quarter-finals of the Royal London Cup after they beat an inexperienced Sussex side by seven wickets at Hove. A stand of 103 in 112 balls for the third wicket between Sam Billings and Sam Northeast provided the platform for Kents comfortable victory in a match reduced to 43 overs because of rain.Sussex looked well short of a competitive total when they were restricted to 182 for 8. Their innings revolved around two partnerships, one of 68 in 16 overs for the fourth wicket between Harry Finch and Craig Cachopa and another of 50 for the fifth wicket between Finch and Fynn Hudson-Prentice.Sussex, who were already out of the competition, experimented with a young line-up, with Hudson-Prentice (20), Christian Davis (23) and Abidine Sakande (21) all coming into the side. Sakande was making his List A debut, while Hudson-Prentice and Davis had played just five previous matches between them at this level.Almost immediately, Sussex were floundering at 5 for 3 in the fifth over. Matt Coles, generating plenty of pace and bounce from the Cromwell Road end, dismissed both openers in his first two overs. First Luke Wright, surprised by the bounce, edged behind to Billings, who took the ball one-handed high to his right. In his next over Coles shaped one across the left-handed Wells and Billings again took the catch.Davis was then athletically caught by Alex Blake at midwicket off Mitchell Claydon for a duck. But Finch and Cachopa, both cutting well against the shorter delivery, revived the innings until the unlucky Cachopa had his off stump knocked back by one that kept low from Darren Stevens.Finch went on to make 54 from 88 balls and Hudson-Prentice scored a stylish 48 off 54 deliveries but there wasnt much more batting from Sussex as the impressive Coles finished with 4 for 39.When Kent batted they lost Daniel Bell-Drummond, who was bowled by Ollie Robinson for 14, and Joe Denly, who was given out caught behind off Sakande for 24 after a long consultation between the umpires. But Northeast, with an unbeaten 66 from 77 deliveries, with five fours and a straight six off Danny Briggs, and Billings, who hit eight fours in a fluent 55, made sure there would no slip-up. When Billings was bowled by Davis they required just another 29 runs and they got home with 12.1 overs to spare. Air Force 1 Alte Bianche Outlet . 4 Villanova with a 96-68 drubbing on Monday. Update: According to an ELeague spokesperson, The decision to replace Luminosity and SK Gaming was solely based on the violation of league rules and the agreements in place with all competing teams that were established prior to our first season.Original story continues below.Turner Sports and WME|IMGs ELeague announced Wednesday both SK Gaming and Luminosity were removed from Season One due to making roster changes that do not comply with ELeague rules. However, according to sources close to both teams and the league, ELeague was originally only going to sanction Luminosity, and award its playoff spot to its players, who now compete under the SK Gaming banner. This was prevented by a petition with signatures from the owners of seven participating organizations: Cloud9, Counter Logic Gaming, Echo Fox, NRG Esports, OpTic Gaming, Team Liquid, and Team SoloMid. The petition, a copy of which was obtained by ESPN, says that each team in good conscience, may not be able to compete if ELeague were to kick out Luminosity, yet leave the spot to the players, as it violates ELeague tournament entry agreement signed by each team participating in the league and the ELeague rules. Those agreements state that the spots in ELeague are owned and operated by the teams, not the players on the team. The petition was addressed to Turner Sports president Lenny Daniels, WME|IMG SVP and associate general counsel John Cooper, and ELeague commissioner Min-Sik Ko.The petition also outlines four different incidents, including the transfer of players from the Luminosity Gaming organization to SK Gaming, a tweet by Ko from May 30, and an allegation that ELeague was going to sanction only the Luminosity organization originally. Later in the petition, it alleges an inherent conflict of interest within the ELeague leadership, citing Ko as a former employee of SK Gaming and what the petition calls a well-known SK loyalist.Giving Luminositys spot to SK Gaming would have given SK a second chance in ELeague, as its original Danish team was eliminated in week three nearly a month ago. Since the Brazilian players who formerly competed under the Luminosity brand were still competing, SK would have simply taken over from that point. The petition goes on to suggest that ELeague can disqualify both parties and teams from the league for breaking the agreed-upon rules -- an action that was taken earlier Wednesday -- but that giving the spot to SK would greatly prejudice the interest of the teams on the petition. The original dispute between SK Gaming and Luminosity began in March after the Brazilian players, coach, and manager under the Luminosity banner at that time -- the likes of Gabriel FalleN Toledo, Fernando fer Alvarenga, Marcelo coldzera David, Lincoln fnx Lau, Epitacio TACO Pessoa, Wilton zews Prado, and Ricardo dead Sinigaglia -- signed forward contracts with SK Gaming to begin on July 1. In December 2015, however, the same parties signed a letter of intent with Luminosity to compete under its banner for an additional two years, meaning it would play under Luminosity until June 2018.In May, ESPN reported on the situation, with Luminosity Gaming owner Steve Maida accusing SK Gaming owner Alex Müller of poaching and tortious interference, as well as the players involved telling ESPN that they wanted to remain with the Luminosity organization. Via veteran Counter-Strike analyst Duncan Thorin Shields, SK Gaming said that it found the letters of intent to be invalid after consulting with legal counsel. On June 24, Luminosity and SK Gaming settled their differences and came to an agreement for the players to move to the SK Gaming banner. Their first competition under the SK banner is currently taking place at ESL One Cologne 2016 at Laxness Arena in Cologne, Germany.Although the dispute has been settled, the Brazilian players involved expressed outrage on Twitter, with TACO alleging that his team was not notified of the ruling before it was publicly announced. Other parts of the Counter-Strike community, including other players, well-known analysts, and journalists, have also been outspoken against the ruling.LOL was great to know that we are out of @EL via Twitter. HOUSTON -- Gary Sanchez has quickly supplanted seven-time All-Star Brian McCann as the New York Yankees top catcher. The 23-year-old hit his fifth home run since he was brought up on Aug. 3, his fourth in four games, during the Yankees 7-4 loss to Toronto on Wednesday.Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner, speaking at the owners meetings in Houston, said general manager Brian Cashman and manager Joe Girardi will decide the future of McCann, who is signed through 2018.It was always the case that Sanchez at some point was going to come up and hopefully come up to stay, Steinbrenner said. So well cross that bridge in the offseason when we come to it. But McCanns a great player, too, so well just have to figure that out.Carlos Beltran was traded to Texas and Alex Rodriguez was released as part of the Yankees recent youth movement, and McCann is the latest veteran to lose playing time.Sanchez, who made a one-game call-up as a designated hitter in May, has started seven of 14 games behind the plate since he rejoined the Yankees this month and has been the DH for six more. McCann has caught just twice since then and been the DH seven times, while backup catcher Austin Romine has been behind the plate five times.McCann called Sanchez one of the better, if not the best, young catchers since Ive been in the big leagues. He understands what Girardi is doing with Sanchez, whose defense improved considerably this year while at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.He told us its the time when hes going to play and play a lot, McCann said. Listen, hes a future All-Star, year in and year out. There are not many guys walking around with that talent. Its going to be nice seeing him grow into that player. Thus ffar with the Yankees, Sanchez is hitting .dddddddddddd360 with 11 RBI in 53 plate appearances, bringing energy to the lineup along with right fielder Aaron Judge and first baseman Tyler Austin, who homered back-to-back in their big league debuts Saturday.McCann is batting .231 this season with 15 homers and 45 RBI. He was born in Athens, Georgia, went to high school in Duluth and could be sought by the Atlanta Braves, who drafted him in 2002. He made all his All-Star appearances with Atlanta, then left after the 2013 season to sign an $85 million, five-year deal with the Yankees.McCann wouldnt discuss the future, saying Im not going to get into all that. His contract includes salaries of $17 million in each of the next two seasons and a $15 million club option for 2019 with no buyout. The option would become guaranteed if McCann has 1,000 plate appearances combined in 2017-18 and makes 90 starts at catcher in 2018 and is not on the disabled list at the end of the season. If the option becomes guaranteed, McCann can void it.Sanchez was bumped up to the cleanup spot for the first time Wednesday, with Judge right behind him.It says that theyve handled whatever weve given them so far, Girardi said. Obviously, these are two young men that have the ability to be very productive. Some guys out of the lineup today, we moved them up against the lefty, let them go get it. Obviously, your hope is over time they can become middle-of-the-order hitters.---AP Baseball Writer Mike Fitzpatrick and AP freelance writer Doug Gould contributed to this report from New York. The Edmonton Oilers have gone 10 seasons without a playoff appearance, employed seven head coaches, won the draft lottery four times and lost 488 of 704 games.Yet the only number that matters now is 97.Thats the number on the sweater of generational talent Connor McDavid, whos going into his second NHL season and leading the Oilers into a new era in their new arena. Edmonton will play the first regular-season game at sparkling Rogers Place against the rival Calgary Flames on Oct. 12, raising the curtain on a fresh start for an organization in need of one.Rogers Place isnt the arena McDavid built, though it should be the scene for the 19-year-olds rapid ascent as one of hockeys brightest stars. He kind of adds another level of excitement, center Ryan Nugent-Hopkins said. Its pretty cool with the new building and everything. Its all kind of coming together at the right time, so now weve just got to go out there and perform, obviously. Its exciting the direction that were heading. Connor is going to be a big part of that. Its going to be fun.Winning the 2015 draft lottery to get McDavid set into motion big changes for the Oilers organization, including the hiring of Peter Chiarelli as general manager. This offseason, Chiarelli signed big power forward Milan Lucic, traded Taylor Hall for defenseman Adam Larsson and drafted Finnish winger Jesse Puljujarvi to complement McDavid, Nugent-Hopkins, winger Jordan Eberle, center Leon Draisaitl and defenseman Darnell Nurse -- all first-round picks.A broken collarbone limited McDavid to 45 games in his rookie season, though he still incredibly put up 48 points and was a finalist for the Calder Trophy. He may have a big, new linemate in the 6-foot-3, 235-pound Lucic, who signed a $42 million, seven-year deal to score goals, dish out assists and hits, and serve as something of McDavids bodyguard for some of his prime seasons. The first thing that stands out about him is just how big he is, McDavid said of Lucic. I didnt know he was that big. Hes a great skater and can really shoot the puck. I think hes definitely going to be a great asset for us.Pencil Lucic in on McDavids left wing and put it in ink that the pride of Newmarket, Ontario, will be the youngest captain in NHL history at 19 years, 273 days old when he wears the C for the first time. Here are some other things to watch with the Oilers this season:LIGHTS, CAM, TALBOTGoaltender Cam Talbot enters the first season of his $12.5 million, three-year deal needing to prove he deserves to be a franchise goaltender. After a rough start last season, the former New York Rangers backup had a 2.37 goals-against average and .922 save percentage in his final 40 games. Edmonton would like Talbot to put up those kinds of performances behind a work-in-progress defense and steal some games along the way.THE BIG GERMANLeon Draisaitl could be a matchup nightmare for opponents as the third-line center behind McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins. Stanley Cup-caliber teams are built down the middle and on the back end, and the Oilers are well on their way if the slick, big 20-year-old German continues to adjust to the NHL.MCLELLAN MAGICThe Todd McLellan-coached, star-studded 23-and-under Team North America dazzled at the World Cup with the kind of fast, exciting hockey that had fans drooling about the future of the sport. He has McDavid and Nugent-Hopkins in Edmonton, too, but knows he cant play that kind of up-and-down, blistering pace for 82 NHL games.Well continue to coach with the same concepts, McLellan said. The team that we have in Edmonton is a really good team but not at the same talent level, and thats natural.DEFENSE UNDER CONSTRUCTIONChiarelli has worked to remake the Oilers blue line by acquiring Larsson and signing Andrej Sekera in the summer of 2015, but its still not at a playoff level. The development of Nurse and 23-year-old Oscar Klebom is essential to that, and it could take another offseason of moves.REPLACING HALLGetting Larsson from the New Jersey Devils cost Edmonton its leading scorer in Hall, who had 26 goals and 65 points last season. The Oilers may be better in the long run after dealing Hall, but theyll have to make up for his production somewhere. Atlanta Falcons coach Dan Quinn dismissed Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Leodis McKelvins description of the Falcons as a front-runner on Monday. We are for damn sure not going to allow anyone else to determine our team identity, Quinn told reporters. Weve got a tough outfit. We know what we stand for as a club, and well leave it at that. After the Eagles?24-15 victory?over the Falcons at Lincoln Financial Field, McKelvin said Philadelphias defense saw a weakness to exploit against Atlanta, which boasted the NFLs top offense.I was telling the defense, this is the type of team, they are a front-runner. They are a front-running team, McKelvin said. If you go out there and make some stops, they eventually are going to be dying down.Falcons free safety Ricardo Allen echoed Quinns thoughts that the Falcons dont dwell on opinions outside their building in comments to ESPNs Vaughn McClure.Everybodys got thheir opinion, man.dddddddddddd Theres always going to be someone who comes out and says something to try and challenge another team, Allen told ESPN. We dont worry about people on the outside. We dont worry about nobody else. We just worry about ourselves. We worry about who we are as a team because we know who we are. And we know when were playing really good ball, were one of the best around. We stay in our locker room. We dont worry about when anybody else talks about us. We dont even bring that stuff up. I didnt even hear about [McKelvins comments], so I dont even really care about that stuff. You can talk all you want to. Have fun with that. I aint with the talking. I play ball. Dean Cosker, the left-arm spinner who was the last remaining active player of Glamorgans 1997 County Championship winning side, has announced his retirement after a 21-year career.Cosker made his Glamorgan debut in 1996 and then took 20 wickets in the trophy-winning campaign the following season. He reached as far as England A level in the late 1990s and remained a consistent performer, highlighted by the fact that his best first-class season came in 2010 when he claimed 51 wickets at 22.11, but he had not played a Championship match this season. He was also immensely valuable in white-ball cricket, enjoying his best T20 season in 2015 when he took 17 wickets. Overall in first-class cricket in finished with 597 wickets, 260 in List A and 100 in T20.Alongside his bowling he was renowned as an outstanding fielder, so much so that he was used by England as a substitute during the 2015 Ashes Test in Cardiff.I feel very humbled and privileged to have had the opportunity to represent Glamorgan over the past 21 years, said Cosker. I would like to thank all the coaches, players and particularly my family that have made this possible and who have continuously supported my career throughout.I have been very lucky to rub shoulders with some of the games finest players and characters, and both on the field and in the changing room I have been able to share some fantastic times that will stay with me as great memories for years to come.I have loved my time at Glamorgan and feel proud to say this was the only county I ever wanted to play for. Leaving the spin bowling department at Glamorgan in an exciting place has always been important to me and, with positive young spin bowlers at the club coming to the fore, I believe this is the case. I am really excited about the next chapter in my life and the challenges that it will bring.Hugh Morris, the Glamorgan chief executive, who was also part of the 1997 Championship-winning side, said: Dean has enjoyed a terrific career with Glamorgan and has been a great ambassador for the Club both on and off the field for more than 20 years. It was a pleasure to play with Dean at the beginning of his career and it has been great working with him over the last few years as a professional cricketer. SAN DIEGO -- San Diego Chargers players and coaches say they arent distracted by increasing chatter that the team will relocate to Los Angeles.Ron Rivera wonders otherwise.Rivera, the coach of the Carolina Panthers, knows all about the Chargers long, bruising stadium saga because he was on San Diegos staff from 2007-10.During a conference call with San Diego reporters Wednesday, Rivera was asked about some of the problems encountered this year by the Chargers (5-7), who visit the defending NFC champion Panthers (4-8) on Sunday.Rivera mentioned injuries, and then segued into the possible relocation. Some other things that have hurt them, too, has been ... I dont want to call it a distraction, but wanting to get a new stadium, Rivera said. I know Mr. Spanos would love to be able to keep that team there -and again, that comes up every year and quite honestly it weighs a little bit on the players -- at least I believe it does, from my opinion. But at the end of the day, whatevers going to happen is going to happen for the organization. I really do believe its a tremendous organization. I think the Spanos family has done a great job there. On Nov. 8, San Diego voters overwhelmingly defeated the Chargers ballot measure asking for $1.15 billion in hotel occupancy taxes to help pay for a $1.8 billion downtown stadium and convention center annex to replace aging Qualcomm Stadium in Mission Valley. The next day, team chairman Dean Spanos said he wouldnt make any announcements about the teams future until after the season.Since then, there have been numerous reports, based on anonymous sources, that the Chargers feel they have no option but to move to Los Angeles, where they would join the Rams in a stadium in Inglewood scheduled to open in 2019.The Chargers must decide by Jan. 15 if theyll exercise their option to move to L.A. or give it one more try in San Diego. The Chargers and their fans went through this last year, when Spanos partnered with the rival Oakland Raiders on a plan to build a stadium in the LA suburb of Carson. When the Chargers hosted the Miami Dolphins on Dec. 20, many fans felt it was the teams final game in San Diego, its home since 1961.But a month later, NFL owners overwhelmingly rejected the Chargers-Raiders plan in favor of the Rams Inglewood plan. However, owners gave Spanos the option to relocate. If Spaanos doesnt take that option, it will then go to the Raiders, unless they commit to Las Vegas.ddddddddddddQuarterback Philip Rivers, a father of eight, would certainly be affected by the Chargers moving.Still, he says the increasing talk about moving isnt a distraction.No. I dont think anybodys thinking about that in the fourth quarter. You dont just start thinking about it, Rivers said. Shoot, I dont give much thought to things I dont know enough about.Asked about hearing relocation talk for a second straight season, Rivers said: Again, I dont like to downplay the situation, but I think its been exhausted to what I can add to it or say about it. If it were to happen or doesnt happen, then thered be something. Every day, I dont look to see if theres a new report. I doubt that theres one guy in there talking about it right now, would be my guess. Some reports have said the Chargers could play the next two years at the StubHub! Center in Carson. That would seem a bit preposterous, since it seats only 27,000.Rivers has been to the StubHub! Center, when his younger brother, Stephen, practiced there for an all-star game. Its a neat little stadium, Philip Rivers said. And the Chargers playing there?Itll be a story if it ever gets to that, Rivers said.USA Today reported Tuesday that the Chargers have been talking with the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, home of the Southern California Trojans and, temporarily, the Rams. However, the Coliseum Commissions lease with USC, which runs the stadium, allows only one NFL team to play there temporarily. The commissions next regularly scheduled meeting is Jan. 26, 11 days after the Chargers must decide whether theyre moving. The Chargers attempt to move last year has turned off many fans. That, coupled with another down year, has dropped home attendance to an average of average of 55,488, worst in the NFL, at 70,000-seat Qualcomm Stadium. The Chargers last home game this season is Jan. 1 against Kansas City. Were going to blame it on ourselves and be accountable for it and move on to the next play or the next moment. We got too many young guys in there that dont even know what that stuff is, he added. So, its almost better to play naive and just go out and worry about us, worry about the Cubs and not anything else in the past or, like I said, any animals. In the ninth, Javier Baez hit a go-ahead single after pinch hitter Willson Contreras tied it with a two-run single. Flame-throwing closer Aroldis Chapman closed it out, rebounding after his blown save Monday cost Chicago in a 13-inning 6-5 loss.Since day one, we came to play hard, Baez said.Maddon and many others have spoken of the Cubs commitment to playing all 27 outs. That resolve has become a defining characteristic for the players hoping to show Wrigleyville a party for the ages. This is big. This is really big. Anytime you do that with a group, it just does a lot for that particular groups confidence, said outfielder Ben Zobrist, who won a title with Kansas City last year. Every group has to kind of find that identity. We did it during the season, but you still have to find that identity in the postseason as well.It proved to be true that thats the kind of team we have. Tonight we were able to put a good comeback together. ' ' '

INDIANAPOLIS -- Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris see every play as an opportunity. So when they trot out Thursday night at Cincinnati, the Indianapolis Colts backup quarterbacks know this game matters.Youre always trying to be sharp, Tolzien said. The way I look at it, its another opportunity to go play in a football game.On this team, those chances usually have been rare. From 1998 through 2010, Peyton Manning started every meaningful game the Colts played. Then after drafting Andrew Luck with the top overall pick in 2012, Indy plugged the rookie into the starting lineup and he started every meaningful game for the next three-plus seasons.Fortunately for the Colts, when Luck went down last season, they had a capable backup in 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck. But when Hasselbeck announced his retirement during the offseason, it didnt take the Colts long to sign Tolzien. He spent the previous three seasons backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, and they still had Morris, a developmental quarterback who finished last season on the Colts roster. Now, with the preseason winding down, the Colts will likely follow their traditional tack by giving most of their starters an extra night off to get healthy for the regular-season opener, Sept. 11 against Detroit. With so many injuries already, who can blame them?Besides, Tolzien and Morris cherish getting some extra work. Its being consistent, making plays, getting the ball out quicker, being decisive with my feet, Morris said, rattling off this weeks goals. You have to make sure youre in the books and preaching the right things. This time, though, the two quarterbacks could be vying for one open spot.Tolzien is listed at No. 2 on Indys depth chart with Morris on the No. 3 line. While coach Chuck Pagano has repeatedly brushed aside any discussion of a challenge to Tolzien, Morris has shown promise in his limited playing time and in a normal season might get one of the precious 53 roster spots. Its not so clear now. With the possibility of 10 or more injured players taking spots on the 53-man active roster, Pagano acknowledged Monday that trimming the roster from 75 to 53 might be tricky. Things could get even more complicated when they fill out the 10-player practice squad because the Colts may need all 10 active for Week 1.Morris said Tuesday he has no idea if the Colts plan to keep two or three quarterbacks, though they have usually had only two during the Manning and Luck eras.Either way, Morris is eager to give it his best shot. Its exciting, he said. Its a great opportunity to put something good on film. Any time youre on the field, you want to put good film on.Tolzien also can use the work.A year ago, he threw only one pass -- a 4-yard completion at Arizona in Week 16. The only other regular-season action for the six-year veteran came in 2013, when Rodgers was injured. He played in three games that season, started two and finished 55 of 90 for 717 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions.Hell probably make his second preseason start Thursday and he wants to make the most of it.It is crunch time, but were going to play to win, he said. You play your best when youre prepared and youre comfortable.Game notes Indianapolis got under the 75-player limit Tuesday by waiving linebacker Anthony Sarao and cornerback Darius White and putting safety Dezmen Southward on injured reserve. ... Indy then re-signed safety Alden Darby, who was released Sunday. ... Left tackle Anthony Castonzo did not practice Tuesday because of a strained triceps. Pagano said he expected Castonzo to return to practice Wednesday. Tight end Dwayne Allen also sat out for the second straight day with a sore hip. ... Dont expect cornerback Antonio Cromartie to play against the Bengals. Hes in shape, Pagano said. But theres a difference between L.A. Golf will be making a comeback to the Olympic fold after a gap of 112 years, and India are well-represented, especially in the mens section of the competition. Tournament qualification rules limited a maximum of four entrants per nation among the top 15 in the world rankings, and only two more per country from the rest (provided none of them were in the top 15), and this meant both world number 62 Anirban Lahiri and world number 211 SSP Chawrasia were virtually assured of spots in Rio even before some of the top golfers started pulling out of the event. Lahiri brings experience of having won a silver in the team event of the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, while for Chawrasia, this will be his first time representing India, though he did play for the Asian team alongside Lahiri in the EurAsia Cup earlier this year under the leadership of Jeev Milkha Singh.Aditi Ashok is the only woman to have made the cut to the top 60, and the 18-year-old is in her early days as a pro on the ladies tour. She is ranked 445th at present and might find the going difficult in a field dominated by far more experienced Koreans, Americans and Swedes. The teamAnirban LahiriSSP ChawrasiaAditi AshokThe key datesAugust 11-14, 17-20?How they got thereThe golfers made the cut for the Olympics by virtue of their rankings - the cut off for which was 60. Wisconsin faces an early elimination game against No. 2 Ohio State on Saturday at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. The No. 8 Badgers are rested after a bye week and, after a seven-point loss to Michigan, Wisconsin could be scratched off the contender list for the College Football Playoff at midseason with a second defeat.Ohio State has become so accustomed to success that a 21-point win for the Buckeyes can be framed as only a moderate success.Such was the case after second-ranked Ohio States 38-17 win over Indiana on Saturday in Ohio Stadium. The Buckeyes were good, but not as good as they had been in their first four games of the season. The Buckeyes will file away the victory and move on to a more formidable challenge on Saturday (8 p.m., ABC) in a Big Ten showdown at No. 8 Wisconsin, which had a bye last week after losing for the first time this season the previous week at No. 4 Michigan in a hard-fought 14-7 decision. The Hoosiers came ready to play and challenged the Buckeyes for much of the afternoon, but in the end they couldnt match Ohio States superior talent. For the first time this season, Ohio State didnt move the ball as efficiently as it had done against the likes of Oklahoma and Rutgers. Quarterback J.T. Barrett was limited to 93 yards passing, completing just 9 of 21 throws, and was forced to run 26 times for 137 yards to help the offense get some traction against Indiana. The Buckeyes game plan was to hit some deep balls to loosen up the Hoosiers defense, but Barrett either misfired, receivers ran bad routes or the coverage blanketed his wideouts, forcing his excessive number of runs. He also faced some pressure from the Indiana pass rush that the offensive line at times found difficult to contain. Were going to go to the drawing board and clean it up next week, Ohio State freshman running back Mike Weber said. Eliminate (mistakes) and get bigger wins.Ohio State coach Urban Meyer, though, isnt going to worry too much about Barrett taking off with the ball considering his dynamic playmaking ability thats reminiscent of Braxton Miller a few years ago.Ill tell you, its part of playing quarterback in this offense. Youre one of the best players in the country, were going to play you and use you and do what you do well, Meyer said. Were aware of (the number of rushes) and have to be somewhat intelligent about how we do it, but go win the game.Meanwhile, the defense continues to play at a high level. Ohio State forced two turnovers, including safety Malik Hookers fourth interception of the season, and made some key stops. The biggest was a stop inside the 5-yard line in the second half with Indiana threatening to make it a seven-point game. The Buckeyes realize they have to pplay better this week than they did against Indiana.ddddddddddddOutstanding. The typical Wisconsin, Meyer said. I think it goes back to (former) Coach (Barry) Alvarez and what hes built up there. I think Coach (Paul) Chryst ... I can push play and see its one of the best coached teams in the United States of America. Very good players. They have their niche.Playing at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison is never easy. The fans are hostile and Wisconsin will be gunning to knock off Ohio State, which lost there as recently as 2010.Wisconsin is in the midst of the rigorous part of its Big Ten schedule. Coming off a bye week after the tough loss at Michigan and facing the prime-time matchup with Ohio State on Saturday, the Badgers travel to Iowa the following week and then return home to face Nebraska.I think were all excited (to face Ohio State at night), Wisconsin redshirt freshman quarterback Alex Hornibrook said. Its going to be an awesome atmosphere here at night in front of our fans. I cant wait to play.Hornibrook, a first-year starter, will have his work cut out for him against the Ohio State defense, which is ranked in the top 10 statistically in every major category. He had trouble against Michigan, completing just 9 of 25 passes for 88 yards and threw three interceptions. This will be another new challenge, a new experience for him, Chryst said. But Im very confident that hell be himself and thats a good thing.Wisconsin is known for its smash-mouth style featuring outstanding running backs in recent years such as Montee Ball and Melvin Gordon. But the Badgers are eighth in the Big Ten in rushing at 161.6 yards per game and the Buckeyes are No. 2 in the conference defending the run, which means Wisconsin could have trouble establishing a ground game.It is a good scheme, sound, Chryst said of Ohio States defense. And theyve got guys that play it well. And I think they are playing with confidence.Defensively, the Badgers get after opponents. In the loss to Michigan, their defense neutralized a Wolverines offense that piled up 77 points against Rutgers last week. Wisconsin held Michigan to one touchdown until the fourth quarter when the Wolverines scored the winning points.Theyre outstanding. Theyre what theyve been, Meyer said. Its amazing that theyve had coach transition. Theyve changed defensive coordinators and its a very similar defense. Its Wisconsins defense. I like that. I like the fact that we change coordinators on offense, its Ohio States offense, so Wisconsin youve got to give the leadership a lot of credit. One of the best teams in America. ' ' '
