ranky back was blamed for his pullout in Madrid

CHICAGO -- The Chicago Cubs new weapon more than likely will be put in the holster Friday during the opener of an interleague series against the Seattle Mariners at Wrigley Field.Wednesday was simply a get-acquainted session for Aroldis Chapman. The newly acquired closer entered in the ninth inning and finished off the Cubs 8-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.On Thursday, it was strictly business. The left-hander entered in the eighth inning with two outs and a White Sox runner on third in a one-run game. He proceeded to strike out Melky Cabrera, and then he worked a one-two-three ninth en route to his 21st save of the year and first as a Cub.By pitching two days in a row, including the four-out save Thursday, Chapman isnt likely to be available Friday, however.Going forward, Chapmans presence -- combined with that of late-inning pitchers Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon -- gives the Cubs an imposing relief force. Rondon spent much of the season as closer, compiling 18 saves.Especially with Chapman in the ninth inning, Stropy and me are more free to pitch in tough situations, Rondon said following the Cubs 3-1 victory over the White Sox on Thursday. We feel thats a strong bullpen right now.The Cubs face Seattle right-hander Hisashi Iwakuma (11-6, 3.96 ERA) in Fridays series opener. The 35-year-old veteran is 10-2 with a 3.69 ERA over his past 12 starts. The Friday start will be Iwakumas second against the Cubs. He had a no-decision in an eight-inning effort on June 28, 2013.The Cubs counter with lefty Jon Lester (10-4, 3.09 ERA). He is just 1-1 in his past six starts, but he boasts a 5-2 record and a 2.18 ERA at Wrigley Field this season. In his career against the Mariners, the Tacoma, Wash., native is 5-4 with a 3.52 ERA, although he has not faced them since 2014.Mariners right fielder Nelson Cruz is expected back in the lineup after the teams off day Thursday. He sat out the Wednesday game in Pittsburgh after fouling a ball off his left shin on Tuesday.Cruzs return is not good news for Lester. Cruz, who leads the Mariners with 25 home runs, has a .393 average with two doubles, a triple and three homers in 28 at-bats vs. Lester.Like the Cubs, the Mariners have a new reliever in their bullpen this week. Right-hander Drew Storen was acquired from the Toronto Blue Jays for right-hander Joaquin Benoit late Tuesday night.Storen made his Mariners debut Wednesday against the Pirates, allowing four runs in 1 1/3 innings.I grew up as a big Mariners fan, he told The (Tacoma, Wash.) News Tribune. So its kind of cool from the fans standpoint in me. The team I grew up following. Its great.Though Storen grew up in Indiana, he was attracted to the Mariners by the presence of future Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr.I was all in on Griffey, Storen told the News Tribune. I had every teal jersey there was. I had the Mariners T-shirt and pillowcase during the playoffs and stuff. I was all in.The Mariners, who are making just their second trip to Wrigley Field in franchise history, enter the series with a 10-3 interleague record, the best in the major leagues, ahead of the Boston Red Sox (8-3) and the Detroit Tigers (10-4). Dikembe Mutombo Jersey . But when it comes to determining if Raymond will find a place on the Leafs roster when training camp concludes in a week, well, that decision will ultimately fall to the head coach. Eddie Johnson Jersey . Collaros, 25, was solid last season, posting a 5-2 record as the starter while incumbent Ricky Ray was injured. Collaros also started Torontos 23-20 regular-season finale loss to Montreal — Ray didnt dress because the Argos had already clinched first in the East Division — but was one of three quarterbacks to play that day. https://www.cheaphawks.com/614r-herm-gilliam-jersey-hawks.html .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. Ed Macauley Jersey .Y. - New Orleans forward Anthony Davis was chosen Friday to replace the injured Kobe Bryant in the NBA All-Star game that will be played in his home city. Marvin Williams Jersey . The Celtics closed out their first preseason under Stevens on Wednesday night with a 101-97 victory over the Brooklyn Nets, who rested a lot of their lineup including former Celtics Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. If you are a genuine fan of Roger Federer, you should vigorously applaud his decision to bail on the rest of the 2016 tennis season. No, you wont see Federer in a few weeks time, feet falling along the baseline as softly as a cats, stalking the elusive singles gold medal in a farewell Olympic performance in Rio. Or later in August, flicking sweet forehands at the National Tennis Center in Flushing in the quest for his sixth US Open title. In his present, somewhat-less-than-his-best condition, you wouldnt have seen ultimate success anyway. But -- assuming a few months of rest and rehabilitation can bring his dodgy left knee back to a sound level -- the inconvenience of missing out on those late-summer visuals has a massive upside for the athlete who turns 35 in 13 days:It likely means a few more years of the less-than-vintage-but-still-stylish Federer we have come to know in recent years -- which isnt half-bad. In fact, its still better than good.Indeed, the mood at the Team8 offices in Pepper Pike, Ohio on Tuesday was upbeat. There is no gloom and doom in our camp, insisted Tony Godsick, Federers longtime agent. The decision was unfortunate, on the face, a bummer, but it was encouraging, too. It shows he still wants to get out there and give it a few more years.Since winning Wimbledon in 2012, the final major in his portfolio that includes a record 17-Grand Slam singles titles, Federer has been essentially rolling through an extended, elevated victory lap. He made the final at Wimbledon in 2014 and 2015 and a year ago at the US Open.Perhaps more telling, after reaching five ATP World Tour 1000 finals in 2014, winning two of them (Cincinnati and Shanghai), he made three master finals a year ago, winning only in Cincinnati. This year? Only 28 matches and zero major or masters finals. The season began typically enough. Federer got to the final in Brisbane and reached the semifinals at the Australian Open for the 12th time in 13 season. But in early February, he underwent surgery meniscus surgery, the first of his career. When he came back a few months later, he wasnt quite himself.Although a cranky back was blamed for his pullout in Madrid, the knee was always the major issue. He lost to Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarters of Monte Carlo and to 22-year-old Dominic Thiem at the Italian Open before opting to skip the French Open, hiis first major miss since the 1999 US Open, ending a record of 65 consecutive Grand Slam appearances.ddddddddddddThe return to his favorite surface was not encouraging; Federer lost again to Thiem on the grass in the Stuttgart semifinals and, a week later, to teenager Alexander Zverev in the semis of Halle, an event the Swiss had won eight times. In retrospect, it approaches amazing that earlier this month Federer reached the semifinals at Wimbledon before losing to Milos Raonic -- in five sets.Actually, Godsick said, he did quite well being where he would not like to be.In the end, I think he realized the competition, as tough as it is, you dont help yourself by playing less than your best. Now he can manage his schedule and take the steps necessary to get bigger, faster and stronger.Godsick would not offer details, but said that by creating a window of four months without competitive tennis -- instead of the usual one -- Federer was giving himself more than enough cushion to come back completely healthy to start 2017.So if the doctor says he needs a certain number of weeks, now he can afford to give it even more time, Godsick said. Everyone on this team is an optimist, and hes the chief optimist.More than anything, Federer seems to love being Federer. Deep in his mind, he has to know another Grand Slam title is increasingly unlikely. Still, he enjoys being in the hunt, maybe more importantly, in the conversation. Clearly, its fun, and there are still millions of more dollars to make. With four children, thats not a minor consideration. The love I have for tennis, the competition, tournaments and of course you, the fans remains intact, Federer wrote in a Facebook post. I am as motivated as ever and plan to put all my energy towards coming back strong, healthy and in shape to play attacking tennis in 2017.Not just tennis, attacking tennis. Federer is currently ranked No. 3 in the world behind Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray. Will the tennis world change appreciably when younger players like Raonic, Thiem, Zverev and Nick Kyrgios move past him? In a word, no.If the goal is to go and play as long as you can, Godsick said, its the right decision.Let the Federer flowing, fluid victory lap continue. ' ' '

Great Britains Davis Cup first-round tie against Canada next year will be played at the TD Place Arena in Ottawa. The 2015 champions will head to the Canadian capital straight after the Australian Open for the clash from Feb. 3-5.The tie throws up the enticing prospect of world No.1 Andy Murray taking on Milos Raonic in a replay of this years Wimbledon final.Raonic has committed to playing in the match while Murray has made encouraging noises, with his participation likely to depend on how he fares in Melbourne.Murray has only missed one tie since 2013 and won 11 of Britains 12 rubbers during their title run last year.Raonic is Canadas only top-100 singles player but they have top doubles players in Vasek Pospisil and Daniel Nestor as well as two of the worlds leading junior players, Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger Aliassime. The tie will be played on an indoor hard court, with the capacity expected to be around 8,000. With the amount of money given to players by their clubs these days, it is a wonder that so many of those teams allow the sport to continue to take away many of their assets so they can play for a different team in the middle of their season. BEIJING -- Basketball legend Michael Jordan now owns his Chinese name, after Chinas highest court sided with him Thursday following a yearslong legal battle over a trademark dispute. The former NBA star has fought a Chinese sportswear maker since 2012 over the name Qiaodan, pronounced CHEEOW-dan, the transliteration of Jordan in Mandarin.Qiaodan Sports, a company based in southern China, had registered the trademark under which it was selling shoes and sportswear.Jordan has been known by the Chinese characters for Qiaodan since he gained widespread popularity in the mid-1980s. He had previously argued unsuccessfully in Beijing courts that Qiaodan Sports had used his Chinese name, his old jersey number 23 and his basketball player logo to make it look like he was associated with their brand. The Supreme Peoples Court on Thursday announced that it was overturning two rulings by Beijing courts against Jordan from 2014 and 2015 that had found there wasnt sufficient evidence to support the athletes allegations over the use of his image and that Qiaodan was the translation of a common family name as the Chinese company claimed. It also ordered the trademark bureau to issue a new ruling on the use of the Chinese characters in the brand name Qiaodan, effectively awarding the trademark to Jordan. The company can continue to use the Romanized spelling of the name, however.Chief judge Tao Kaiyuan said there was an established link between Jordan and the Chinese characters for Qiaodan, which are commonly used by the public when referring to the former basketball player, meaning that Jordan was entitled to protection under the trademark law.The courts judgment was showwn live on its website.ddddddddddddJordan said in a statement that millions of Chinese fans and consumers had always known him by the name Qiaodan and that he was happy the court recognized his right to protect his name.Chinese consumers deserve to know that Qiaodan Sports and its products have no connection to me. Nothing is more important than protecting your own name, and todays decision shows the importance of that principle, Jordan said.In a statement after the ruling, the company defended its actions but said it would respect the courts decision. In a twist in the legal saga, Qiaodan Sports successfully countersued Jordan in 2013 for preventing it from pursuing a stock market listing because of the trademark lawsuit. The case reflects the difficulties faced by foreign individuals and companies in protecting their copyrights in China, where domestic firms have long taken a cavalier attitude toward intellectual property.Numerous Chinese companies sell products with names that sound similar to well-known foreign brands, often with only one or two letters changed.Chinese law protects foreign companies in cases where their brand was already famous in China before being registered by a Chinese firm seeking to capitalize on its notoriety. However, Apple Inc. lost a legal battle earlier this year when a Beijing court ruled the company had failed to prove that iPhone was a famous brand in China before a Chinese company applied for the iPhone trademark in 2007. The Chinese company uses iPhone on its handbags and mobile phone cases. ' ' '

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Kentucky coach John Calipari figures the sixth-ranked Wildcats and seventh-ranked North Carolina are still sorting through what kind of teams they can be.If thats the case, they both will stick around long into March. The Wildcats got a freshman program-record 47 points from Malik Monk to hold off the Tar Heels 103-100 in a Saturday thriller, the weeks only matchup of top-10 teams from the AP Top 25 . It was a glimpse of the high-level potential for both the freshman-led Wildcats and veteran Tar Heels, two teams that sure looked like Final Four favorites in Las Vegas. Were still trying to figure each other out, Calipari said afterward. Theyre trying to figure each other out. ... If we had lost that game, Id be saying, `Its December 17th, and this is who we are on December 17th against a really good team. Good enough to beat them. Good enough to lose to them. Thats who we are.Now my thing is: where are we going to be one month from now?Monks huge performance -- capped by the go-ahead 3 with 16.7 seconds left -- was so good that fellow rookie DeAaron Foxs 24-point, 10-assist effort went practically unnoticed by comparison.Meanwhile, UNC juniors Justin Jackson (career-high 34 points) and Joel Berry II (23 points and seven assists in return from ankle injury) led a deep offense that ran with the Wildcats like few teams can or will.I mean, we were right there against one of the best teams in the country, and I guess thats all you can take from it, Jackson said. I mean, we kept fighting, which is what Im extremely proud of everybody on that team. And we were right there. As for poll implications, Kentucky could get a bump, while its hard to imagine UNC taking much of a slide after a game that will stand out even when by the time the nets come down in April.STILL ROLLINGTop-ranked and reigning NCAA champion Villanova (11-0) rolled past Temple 78-57 for its 17th straight win Tuesday night. He scored 12 points in his first game Thursday night against Appalachian State, then added 12 more in Sundays win against Fairfield.Yurtseven can shoot from outside and is a good passer, but he has to work on staying out of foul trouble as he adjusts to the American game. Its just adapting to the system, to referees, Yurtseven said after Thursdays win. althy and Massey in the mix, the Gators are

Erstellt 16.12.2019 14:15 von MJL456 16.12.2019 14:15 In der Kategorie Allgemein.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Dre Massey is Floridas most versatile player, capable of lining up at receiver, running back, quarterback, returner and punter. Yes, punter. The 25th-ranked Gators probably wont ask Massey to kick, but they do expect the junior college transfer to be a huge help on offense this season.Hes one of those guys that you can use in a lot of different situations, coach Jim McElwain said.Massey did it all at Holmes (Mississippi) Community College last year. He caught 21 passes for 548 yards and six touchdowns, and carried 59 times for 452 yards and three scores. He also punted three times (averaged 22.3 yards) and threw three passes (all incomplete).Florida isnt trying to pass Massey off as a modern-day Paul Hornung, but considering the Gators lack of offensive playmakers since Percy Harvin left school in 2009, its easy to understand their excitement. At the very least, Massey should give the Gators another viable receiving option alongside Antonio Callaway, Brandon Powell and C.J. Worton. But Massey also could end up in the starting lineup because Callaway hasnt been cleared to play following a university-imposed suspension and Worton is dealing with a high-ankle sprain. And if Masseys performance matches his confidence, hell be tough to take off the field. It will give (defenses) a headache trying to figure out what they can do to stop me, Massey said. Then well switch it up and do something different. Its what we do.Florida has been searching for more offense for years, ever since quarterback Tim Tebows tenure ended after the 2009 season with two national championships and about 20 school records. The Gators ranked 100th in the nation in scoring in 2015, averaging 23.2 points a game, and were 112th in total offense. They managed to win the Southeastern Conferences watered-down Eastern Division thanks mostly to a dynamic defense.McElwain vowed the offense will be dramatically better this year. His scheme is predicated on shifts and movements that are designed to create mismatches. Massey seems to be a perfect fit. The Greenville, South Carolina, native -- former Gamecocks coach and current Florida ambassador Steve Spurrier recruited him out of high school -- plays mostly in the slot, but can slide outside or line up in the backfield. And if the Gators want to get trickier, Massey can take snaps.McElwain even guaranteed that Massey would throw at least one pass this season.Theres the art of deception in having those guys being able to do so many different things, McElwain said. I think anytime you can do that, it really helps.McElwain wanted to use Powell in a similar role last season, but he was slowed by a foot injury. With Powell healthy and Massey in the mix, the Gators are planning to play them side by side.Thats some crazy matchup problems, Massey said. Theres really nothing you can do.The Gators hope thats the case. If so, there would be even less need for Massey to punt.Ive been pretty much versatile everywhere Ive played, said Massey, who once accounted for 11 touchdowns in a high school game. Ive always been able to do more than one thing and play more than one position. I take pride in that.---AP college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org Air Max 97 Prezzo Basso .ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. Vans Outlet Italia . Rookie Nathan Cleary has catapulted Penrith into the NRL top eight with a five-star individual performance in his sides 38-18 thrashing of the Sydney Roosters. The 18-year-old Cleary scored the Panthers first on Monday night, then put the result beyond doubt in the second half by setting up one of the tries of the season for Tyrone Peachey. The home side was leading 28-6 when Cleary delighted the 9,653 fans in the crowd at Pepper Stadium with a break into the backfield before kicking wide at full pace for Peachey to finish off a 60-metre effort. The win lifts the Panthers to seventh spot with just four games remaining. However the victory could come at a cost - captain Matt Moylan finished the match on the bench with blurred vision and forward Sitaleki Akauola also retired early with rib damage. The Roosters, who had chief playmaker Mitchell Pearce ruled out pre-game with a calf injury, looked competitive early when Dale Copley cancelled out Clearys show-and-go effort. However the home side took over thereafter, scoring the next six tries, including one each to Peachey and Chris Grevsmuhl to take an 18-6 lead into the sheds.Courtesy of a string of penalties against the visitors after the break, the Panthers snuffed out the match with tries to Cartwright, Waqa Blake, Peacheys pearler, and Isaah Yeo all within 17 minutes.By the time Cleary converted Yeos easy 40-metre effort from dummy half, it was 38-6.The Roosters saved some face through late tries to Daniel Tupou and Boyd Cordner, however it wasnt enough to stop them from falling to their seventh loss in eight games.Roosters coach Trent Robinson said that without his on-field general in Pearce, the Roosters rookie halves of Connor Watson and Ryan Matterson gave Penrith easy ball. When you lose your halfback and the guy that leads you around the park, its very difficult, he said.If we cant put them into awkward positions through good kicks and good pressure, then they play with more freedom. The whole 80 minutes was front-foot attack. But while Robinson was disappointed with his own playmakers, he was full of praise for Penriths own whizkid in Cleary. He was exceptional, he led from the front as an 18-year-old, he said.Panthers coach Anthony Griffin labelled it one of their best efforts of the season. It was really good, probably one of our better performances of the year under the circumstances, it was enjoyable to watch, enjoying their footy out there tonight at this time of the year, he said. But he was careful not to shower Cleary with too much credit.Hes doing a great job, his kicking games good. Ive got to give a wrap to Bryce (Cartwright), Matt Moylan, (Peter) Wallace, the guys around him. Theyre keeping him calm. Custom David Ross Jersey . Negredo broke the deadlock from close range after a simple move in the 99th minute before Dzeko took the ball round goalkeeper Tim Krul to seal the victory in the 105th. LONDON -- Washington Redskins running back Matt Jones wont play Sunday, but theres a good chance hell be the only key player sidelined. The three other Redskins players with the biggest question marks -- left tackle Trent Williams, corner Josh Norman and tight end Jordan Reed?-- participated in a light practice Friday. Both Norman and Reed, recovering from concussions, still need to see a doctor again Saturday after their walk-through to determine if theyll be able to play. Reed has missed the last two games, but Norman was hurt last week. All three players are officially listed as questionable. Williams has maintained all week that hell play with a sprained left knee and reiterated that stance Friday. Both Reed and Norman expressed optimism as well.I expect to play, Norman said.I feel great, Reed said.It would be a huge boost for Washington if both could play, especially Norman given that hell cover Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green, who leads the NFL with 50 receptions. Also, the Redskins other starting corner, Bashaud Breeland, missed two game recently because of a sprained ankle and then sprained the other one Sunday against Detroit. He had both ankles heavily taped in practice this week.Jones said he bruised his knee and suffered cartilage damage on his knee during the second quarter against Detroitt.dddddddddddd He did not practice all week and when the Redskins signed Mack Brown off the practice squad Friday, when it became clear that Jones wouldnt play.Robert Kelley?and Chris Thompson will take over for Jones, who has rushed for a team-best 460 yards and three touchdowns. Kelley, an undrafted rookie, will start in his place, but theres a good chance Thompson will have a similar type of game as last week when he carried 12 times and caught seven passes. The Redskins are reluctant to give him more work because of durability concerns. Kelleys career high in carries is five. He has rushed 17 times for 103 yards, with a long of 45, in limited action. Washingtons run game doesnt have to suffer minus Jones; Kelleys ability to plant and cut without hesitation makes him a good fit in this offense, too.Hes ready to go, Redskins coach Jay Gruden said of Kelley. He has a limited amount of work but the reps he has, hes done a good job. He runs hard and he runs physical and he has great vision. Were excited to see what hell do with more reps. Mack had a very strong preseason and that was a tough decision between Rob and Mack [in the final cuts]. Were very comfortable with Mack also. ' ' '

I was hitting horrible shots but somehow I managed to bring it in.ddddddddddddSpaniard Nacho Elvira and Englands Chris Paisley, who had led after the second round, shared third at 18 under.Molinari and Willett had shared the lead as round three was completed on Sunday morning, following bad weather in the first two days.More than half of Darren Clarkes Europe team, including Willett, was competing in Monza ahead of the Ryder Cup at the end of the month.Willett believes coming up against such a ferocious home crowd will hold him in good stead.Im sure its going to be 100 times worse when we get to the Ryder Cup in America, but its been a little bit of a taster, he said. Its been good to play under that pressure and be under the gun and be in contention. If you finish a golf tournament 21 under par and you lose, I dont think you can be too disheartened about it. MEXICO CITY -- Mexican teams will not play in Copa Libertadores, at least in 2017, because the tournament*s new schedule makes it nearly impossible, league President Enrique Bonilla said Friday.Last month, Conmebol changed its calendar to play the tournament between February and November, instead of the first half of the year like it the past. The Mexican teams, invited to play in the championship since 1998, have several conflicts because the new dates create a conflict with the CONCACAF Champions league among others.Bonilla said that he had several meetings with Conmebol President Alejandro Dominguez and asked for a new schedule but was unsuccessful. After that, both held several meetings trying to make it work, eventually the Mexican side withdreew from the tournament.ddddddddddddBonilla said that Mexico hopes to return to Copa Libertadores in 2018.We want to come back, but playing like this will be to take a step back, it*s too much of a burden for our teams, Bonilla said. If we work together we might get something solid for 2018.Dominguez, through a press release, said that Conmebol respected the decision and said that the doors are open for Mexico. We worked very hard with our Mexican colleagues, and we understand that 2017 will be a transition year. The doors are still open and when Mr. Bonilla gives us a new proposal we will take a look at it, Dominguez said. ' ' '

SEPANG, Malaysia -- Fernando Alonso will run an updated Honda power unit during Friday practice for the Malaysian Grand Prix after the Japanese manufacturer spent two performance tokens on upgrades. The new power unit features an updated engine block and exhaust. The new engine block will reduce weight and improving durability while the redesigned exhaust is targeted at improving efficiency. One token was spent on each part, meaning Honda has just one token left for the rest of the season -- which it is unlikely to spend.Alonso will run the updates in Friday practice, incurring a 30-place grid penalty for Sundays race as he moves on to his eighth engine of the season. Honda will use the practice sessions to evaluate the new parts, but Alonso is then expected to switch back to his previous engine for qqualifying and the race.dddddddddddd That will leave Alonso with a new, penalty-free engine for Japan where Honda is hoping to score a strong result in front of its home crowd.Jenson Button is not expected to run the updated power unit until the U.S. Grand Prix, so as to avoid a penalty in Suzuka. It will also be in line with Buttons final scheduled power unit change of the season. The Malaysia update is Hondas fourth of the season after spending two tokens on a turbo upgrade at the Canadian Grand Prix, two tokens on upgrading the air intake at Silverstone and seven tokens on the combustion chamber and turbocharger in Belgium. TROON, Scotland -- French golfer Clement Sordet woke up at 4 a.m. on Friday to text messages asking if he was safe following the tragedy in his hometown of Nice.In fact, Sordet was on the west coast of Scotland for the British Open at Royal Troon, but his girlfriend, Marie, and her family were in Nice and celebrating Bastille Day when a truck plowed through revelers gathered along the Riviera citys waterfront promenade. At least 84 people were killed.Sordet said the tragedy happened about 500 meters from where he lives. Its a really sad situation, the 23-year-old Sordet said. I give my thoughts to all the families and to the people who died.He said his girlfriend, her family and his friends are safe.Sordet used a blue marker to write the words Pray For Nice on his cap for his second round. He was in the first group out for the second round at 6:35 a.m., and shot 4-over 75.I tried not to think about, thats why I had this on my hat, Sordet said, pointing to the side of his cap. I just tried to enjoy the last day at the Open.Sordet was born in Charbonnieres-les-Bains, near Lyon. He moved to Nice, where his girlfriend is from. He wont be back there for another two weeks because he is about to play in back-to-back tournaments.Sordet said he wouldnt be nervous going back to France. The attack in Nice has rocked a nation still dealing with the aftermath of two attacks in Paris last year that killed a total of 147 people.Im really proud to be French, he said. We need to support each other.Victor Dubuisson, who was born in Cannes, a city just down the coast from Nice in southeastern France, is the other French golfer in the British Open field. Dubuisson tees off in the afternoon. The French flag that flies above the grandstand at the 18th green, along with the banners of every other nation represented in the 156-player field, was lowered to half-staff Friday. The R&A, which organizes the British Open, has made black ribbons available for players and caddies to wear as a mark of respect to those who died in the attack in Nice. If you go back to that game, we played the Swifts way.We played the ball the way we want to play it. We played short and sharp. ' ' '

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Not much has changed with the Minnesota Wild roster. The biggest difference is the man now in charge on the bench, Bruce Boudreau, whos been tasked with squeezing more success out of a team thats been stuck in the early rounds of the playoffs for the last four years.Bruce has that ability to convince the players, to get the players, to encourage the players, to prod the players to execute on a consistent basis, general manager Chuck Fletcher said the day Boudreau was introduced in May. If we do that, were a good hockey team and can even become very good.Boudreau has mostly experienced early exits from the postseason, too, with Washington and Anaheim. Without them, though, the 61-year-old likely wouldnt have been available to Fletcher and the Wild in the search for the franchises fifth head coach and fourth in six years. Theyre banking on Boudreau, with his remarkable regular season success of eight division titles in nine years, as the catalyst that this a group of players has been missing at critical times. You come to realize why hes had success. Everything he says makes a lot of sense, right wing Jason Pominville said. He kind of goes out of his way to make sure that we understand it and explains to us why were doing it and what can happen if we do it and do it right, so its nice to have that voice. With his roly-poly build and mischievous gap-toothed grin, Boudreau doesnt look the part of a taskmaster. Make no mistake, though, that his practices have been demanding during the get-to-know-each-other phase during training camp. They are intense, a lot of skating, and you can tell theres a purpose to all the drills were doing, left wing Zach Parise said, noting the emphasis on teaching concepts and creating game-like situations. It kind of forces us to play at a faster pace in practices, and hopefully that translates into games. The Wild start the season at division rival St. Louis on Oct. 13. Their home opener is two days later against Winnipeg. Here are some of the top storylines for 2016-17 in Boudreaus first year with Minnesota:PARISE RETURNS: Parise missed the playoff series last spring, a six-game loss to division champion Dallas, with a back injury that bothered him down the stretch and robbed the Wild of their best forward. Healthy enough to play for the U.S. team in the World Cup of Hockey, Parise will be counted on to be the emotional engine of a first line featuring center Marc Staal, one of the few notable offseason additions, and Charlie Coyle on the right wing.Theyre part of our top six, and we expect them to score, Boudreau said. And I expect them to be able to defend. Its not a one-way street.CONVERTED CENTER: Coyle has gone back and forth between center and the wing, but the plan for now is to keep him and his 6-foot-3, 218-pound frame on the wing. Coyle had a career-high 21 goals and 42 points in 2015-16, but he was still prone to long stretches without scoring. So far we havent seen the peak of him, Boudreau said. I think hell be better and when hes better it makes all of us better.CONVERTED CENTER, PART TWO: Since making his debut as a 20-year-old in 2012-13, Mikael Granlund hasnt matched the hype surrounding his talent with the same production. Granlund began to thrive on the wing during the postseason, and hell likely stay there on a line centered by captain Mikko Koivu and rounded out by Chris Stewart, the other significant free-agent acquisition. If Im a winger, Im a winger, Granlund said. Im excited both ways. So it doesnt matter to me.DEFENSEMEN DEMANDS: Boudreau hired Hall of Fame defenseman Scott Stevens for his staff, bringing a hard-nosed guide for the blue-line group led by Parises pal, Ryan Suter. Stevens, who spent three years on New Jerseys staff, was itching to get back on the bench after working for NHL Network last season. Yeezy Boost 700 V2 For Sale . It was the kind of score that might make everyone else wonder which course he was playing. Except that Graeme McDowell saw the whole thing. VAISON LA ROMAINE, France -- It was the sort of incident that, sadly, was waiting to happen. The shambolic finish to the 12th stage of the Tour de France on Thursday was littered with senseless crowds,? which ruined a dramatic finale. Not only did the incident halt the attack of British two-time Tour champion Chris Froome and Australian Richie Porte, but it turned the finale into a farce. In the shortened 178km stage from Montpellier to Mont Ventoux, Froome (Sky) and Porte (BMC) each crashed into a television motor bike that had been stopped by a virtual wall of fans. This happened as the two, along with Bauke Mollema (Trek-Segafredo), were extending their lead on the group of rivals with 1.2 kilometers to go. The replays showed Porte riding straight into the back of the motor bike, striking his chin as he went to the ground, with Froome and Mollema following suit.In addition to the crowds, another contributing factor to the crash was the lack of barriers leading up to the finish. Because the distance of the stage was shortened due to gale-force winds, organizers had not brought more barriers down from the initial finish at the summit of Mont Ventoux. Some might argue that this years Tour has become farcical, remembering the embarrassment of the one-kilometrer-to-go arch falling onto British rider Adam Yates (Orica-BikeExchange) on Saturday. And to think Thursdays crash came just five days after Froomes impassioned plea for crowds to respect the riders and not run too close to them. But the drama didnt end with the crashes. First came the sight of Froome dropping his broken bike, after he got back up on his feet and ran for 50 seconds. Who could have imagined? The yellow jersey wearer, a two-time Tour winner, running as if he was in a triathlon transition zone through the still cheering and shocked masses. He stopped to resume cycling only when the neutral service gave him a spare, but ill-fitting, bike. Finally, his Sky team car reached him to provide a better bike. Then as Mollema raced ahead, the rivals he, Froome and Porte had worked so hard to drop caught up with the chaos, only to sweep by Froome and Porte, who finished 19th and 25th respectively. Meanwhile, Belgian rider Thomas De Gendt (Lotto-Soudal) won the stage. But the race jury overturned the provisional results and declared a new race leader in Yates, who began the stage in second place overall. Froome and Porte were awarded the same finishing time as Mollema, who placed 10th at 5:05, and Froome was officially put back into first place overall with a lead of 47 seconds on Yates and 54 seconds on Colombian Nairo Quintana (Movistar). As for Porte, he was up from 14th to 11th overall -- but still at 2:22 to Froome.Froome: Expect the unexpected at the TourYates welcomed the overturn. I dont want to take the jersey like that, he said. Id rather take it with my legs and not a crash in a bad situation. If I was in the same situation in the yellow jersey, Id want the same outcome.Froome did not attend the post stage media zone or news conference that is normally required of the yellow jersey wearer. But he spoke to French Television and released a statement on the Team Sky website: Mount Ventoux always throws up something ddifferent, and today was no exception.dddddddddddd Obviously its really unfortunate what happened in the last couple of kilometres, but ultimately I think common sense has prevailed and the commissaries have come to the right decision -- so Id like to thank them for that. You always have to expect the unexpected at the Tour, and Ive said all along that this would be my biggest challenge yet. Now Im just looking forward to tomorrows time trial. On Friday, the Tour will resume, as it always does after a crisis, for the Stage 13 time trial, 37.5 kilometers from Bourg-Saint-Andéol to La Caverne du Pont DArc. But as Froome, Porte and the rest of the peloton continue on, the understandable and justified calls for crowds to be controlled must be addressed.A lauded trait of the Tour is the interaction between riders and fans who flock in the hundreds of thousands to watch the worlds biggest bike race. But for years, concerns have been brewing at increasing levels of extreme behavior. The reasons have been many. Fan excitement is one. In the 1993, as Italian Giuseppe Guerini (Telekom) was soloing toward victory on the prestigious Alpine finish at lAlpe dHuez, he was bowled over by a spectator who was standing in the middle of the road to take his photo. Guerini still won the stage and the offending fans, to his credit, apologized the next day. However, in recent years, the frenzy has seen more violent intent. Sentiment toward American Lance Armstrong during his reign as the Tour champion from 1999 to 2005 turned from bitter to extremely volatile as suspicion grew that he was doping. Once encouraging messages of support -- that were either verbalized or painted on the road -- became direct personal insults. Suspicion that Armstrong doped eventually proved correct after he confessed and was banned for life in 2012. He was also stripped of his tour titles.Porte: I dont know what they are going to do.Froome and Porte have both experienced the ugly and angry tone of the crowd, as have other riders. In 2013, when Froome won at Mont Ventoux, after dropping Quintana, he rode to victory through a chorus of boos and jeers. Quintana was otherwise greeted by cheers. Just last year, Froome had urine thrown at him, and Porte was punched during a stage.Even on Thursday, when Froome received his yellow jersey, he was also greeted by boos. Porte was at a loss to explain how the crowds became so uncontrollable. I dont know what [race organizers] are going to do. They need to do something about it because its not fair, Porte said. Its not really the motor bikes, is it? Its the crowds. They are in your face the whole time, pushing order, and at the top there, that was just crazy. We were 23 seconds in front and next thing for something so silly, you know everyone is back on us.De Gendt called for action to be taken: There were a lot of people in the last kilometer, he said. They should do something about that. There was not even a place for one moto.Trouble is, after Froomes plea for respect last week clearly fell on the deaf ears, one cant help but ask: What is the solution? ' ' '

CLEVELAND -- Hillary Clinton is pulling out the big guns for her final swing through the crucial battleground state of Ohio. Or at least the very, very tall ones.Basketball great LeBron James joined Clinton at a campaign event in Cleveland on Sunday, dwarfing the Democratic candidate as he pushed Ohioans to support her at the polls. As a child growing up in inner-city Akron, the NBA star (height: 68) said he believed our vote doesnt matter. But it really does, he said.Standing beside -- and somewhat below -- James, Clinton praised his work on the basketball court and for improving the lives of children through his family foundation. What he does off the court is to care for every child as though that child is his own, she said.Clinton added: I will be on your side. I will fight for you.Though shes spent most of her campaign running as President Barack Obamas successor, vowing to continue the first black presidents legacy, Clinton has struggled to motivate black voters. In early voting, theyve turned out in lower numbers than the record black turnout in 2008 and 2012 that helped fuel his historic candidacy. The slump could hurt her in swing states, like Ohio and Pennsylvania, where urban, black turnout is crucial for Democrats. On Sunday morning, Clinton stopped by an African-American church in solidly Democratic northwest Philadelphia to warn parishioners that everything they care about is on the ballot. This election is about doing everything we can to stop a movement to destroy President Obamas legacy, she told voters at Mount Airy Church of God in Christ. But her team feels particularly concerned about Ohio, where polls show her in a dead heat with her Republican rival, Donald Trump. On Friday, she appeared at a free concert featuring rapper Jay Z and his wife, Beyonce Carter Knowles, in Cleveland.LeBron, who helped end Clevelands championship drought earlier this summer by winning a title with the Cavaliers, endorsed Clinton last month in an op-ed article, where he argued she would be a champion for children and improve life for African-Americans. A father of three, James said he returned to Ohio from the Miami Heat in 2014 with two missions: to win a championship and help area children.Only one person running truly understands the struggles of an Akron child born into poverty, wrote James, who grew up poor in that city and has started a foundation to improve educational outcomes for at-risk children in his hometown. He campaigned for Obama in 2008.James isnt the only athlete weighing in on the 2016 race. Golfer John Daly, former football star Herschel Walker, former professional wrestler Hulk Hogan and former basketball coach Bob Knight have endorsed Trump. Florida Panthers Store . The visitors took a deserved lead in the 16th minute with midfielder Yohan Cabaye curling the ball beyond Adrian from inside the penalty area. Wholesale Panthers Jerseys . No. 13-seeded John Isner and No. 21 Philipp Kohlschreiber were among six players who dropped out of the tournament on Tuesday, joining No. 12 seed Tommy Haas and two other players who withdrew on Monday. SEATTLE -- Having lost six straight games and 10 of 12 before returning to Safeco Field, Mariners manager Scott Servais met with players in an attempt to get the team to play with better focus and intensity. The message was heard.Seth Smith hit his first career grand slam, homering for the fourth straight game and leading the Seattle Mariners over the Baltimore Orioles 9-4 Sunday for a four-game sweep. The Mariners won seven of nine on a homestand that included series against St. Louis and Pittsburgh. We didnt talk at all about wins and losses, Servais said. It was just about how we were playing. We werent playing well, and we needed to play better. Things happen in this game. You play so many games, but you can control how you play and how you prepare, and thats what we wanted to see.Seattle had 31 runs and 47 hits, including 23 for extra bases, in sweeping the AL East leaders. It was Seattles first four-game sweep since July 2012 against Kansas City.It seems like we should do it more often, Kyle Seager said of Servais talk. It worked pretty well.Seager felt the team was especially flat when it was swept four games at Detroit. Its up to us to understand that its not going to happen just by showing up, Smith added. Youve got to play with intensity, prepare yourself, and its got to show up through your effort on the field.Hisashi Iwakuma (8-6) limited Baltimore to four runs despite allowing 10 hits in six-plus innings. He struggled with command early and allowed baserunners in every inning except the third.Ubaldo Jimenez (5-8) gave up six runs and six hits in 4 1/3 innings with three walks and three strikeouts. With the game scoreless in the third, Chris Iannetta walked leading off, Ketel Marte blooped a single and Leonys Martin reached when he bunted, Jimenez picked up the ball and looked to throw to third, only to find Manny Machado had charged in as well and the base was uncovered. Jimenez had Smith in an 0-2 count before Smiths slam put the Mariners ahead 4-0.Thats the hardest part, Jimenez ssaid.dddddddddddd To have a hitter like him who is really hot and get ahead, then give up a homer, its tough.Mark Trumbos solo homer and J.J. Hardys two-run double pulled Baltimore to 4-3 in the fourth, but Ketel Marte had an RBI double in the bottom half and Jimenez balked with two outs and runners at the corners, breaking his hands and stopping his motion when Martin took off to steal second.Trumbo had an RBI single against Edwin Diaz in the seventh, cutting Seattles lead to 6-4. Kyle Seager hit a two-run double off Ariel Miranda in the bottom half and scored on Adam Linds double.STRIKEOUTSMariners RHP Edwin Diaz matched Randy Johnsons franchise record by recording 10 consecutive outs with strikeouts. In his last four appearances, Diaz has allowed three hits in four innings with 10 strikeouts. Johnson accomplished the feat over two starts in July 1997.BEREAVEMENT LEAVEOrioles 3B Pedro Alvarez is heading to the Dominican Republic after Sundays series finale in Seattle after his grandfathers death. Alvarez is expected to miss a three-game series against the Los Angeles Dodgers before rejoining the team in Baltimore for Fridays game against the Los Angeles Angels.TRAINERS ROOMMariners: RHP Felix Hernandez had another bullpen session on Sunday and is to throw a simulated game on Tuesday in Houston. If all goes well, he is expected to throw two rehab starts beginning July 10 with Class A Everett. Hernandez has been on the disabled list since June 1 with a strained right calf.UP NEXTOrioles: RHP Yovani Gallardo (3-1) is to start Monday at the Dodgers. He is 2-0 with a 4.41 ERA in three starts since returning to the rotation on June 18 following a stint on the DL caused by right biceps tendinitis.Mariners: LHP Wade Miley (6-4) will start at Houston, his second outing since returning from the DL. Miley allowed five runs and seven hits in against Pittsburgh on Wednesday. ' ' '

a surprise contender in Paul PaulB Ramos

What went down in the 11th week of college soccer? The aim each week is to bring you five stories that defined the week in college soccer or help navigate the long road to San Jose and the Womens College Cup. For most of the country, that meant transitioning this week from the regular season to conference tournaments.Seventeen seconds and the best performance of the weekIf you dont know Kelsey Johnson you are really, truly missing out.So began Central Arkansas teammate Jessica Pantusos attempt to explain why the story of the week didnt involve the ACC, Pac-12 or any of the other conferences most likely to fill the field in the College Cup. It only indirectly involved Central Arkansas taking another step toward giving itself the chance to play on those same NCAA tournament fields, the Sugar Bears wrapping up the Southland Conference regular-season title in unbeaten fashion against Northwestern State this past Friday.Johnson started the game for Central Arkansas but came off after just 17 seconds, long before Alex Moores goal put the team ahead or Ashley Smith doubled the lead. But those 17 seconds came after nine months of waiting. Nine months of hoping she would get that chance to play, even as she confronted a reality that made a game inconsequential by comparison. Diagnosed with a benign brain tumor this past winter after suffering lingering headaches following a minor car accident, Johnson had surgery to remove it in May.She hoped all along that she would return to the field for her senior season but was unable to gain medical clearance while undergoing post-surgery radiation treatment, even as she continued with her classes and as a part of the soccer team from the sideline. Until Fridays home finale, that is. Still not fully cleared, she played anyway.I get doubts in my mind and obviously everyones going to think of the worst-case scenario every once in a while, Johnson told Littles Rocks KATV in April. But I have a great feeling Im going to get out there again. No one in the month ahead will get more joy out of being on a field than Johnson did.West Virginia closes out regular season in styleDont even bother trick or treating at Dick Dlesk Stadium in Morgantown. If the current residents havent given away a goal in months, what are your odds of getting free candy off them? Not satisfied with just dominating the Big 12, No. 1 West Virginia completed a shutout of the league with a 3-0 win over Oklahoma State this past Friday. Eight conference games, 12 hours of soccer and not a single goal scored against the Mountaineers by a Big 12 opponent.Like any successful defense, some of that is about not having to defend -- the Mountaineers outshot the Cowgirls 26-4. But a lot of it is also just that Kadeisha Buchanan and the rest of the defensive core are just better than everybody else. The Mountaineers face Texas Tech in a Big 12 tournament quarterfinal Wednesday in Kansas City, with the potential for a semifinal against No 24 Oklahoma after that.Florida States not-so-secret weapon returnsEliminating No. 6 Duke in an ACC quarterfinal penalty shootout, a week after beating the Blue Devils at home, enhances Florida States resume. To a small degree that is because of the result itself, officially a draw, but mostly because it presents a needed opportunity to earn more resume points against No. 14 Clemson in Fridays ACC semifinal in Charleston, South Carolina. Now 4-1-2 this season against teams ranked in the most recent RPI top 50, there still appears to be a path for the Seminoles, No. 16 in that RPI release, to swoop in and claim a valuable top-eight seed in the NCAA tournament if they run the table in Charleston. (As there is for No. 16 North Carolina, which had its best week of the season by beating Florida State to close the regular season on Thursday and routing No. 7 Virginia 3-0 in a weekend ACC quarterfinal). No matter where they play their games, the Seminoles will be better for freshman Deyna Castellanos being there rather than in Jordan. Thats where she spent most of October, leading Venezuela to the semifinals of the FIFA Under-17 Womens World Cup (a longer stay than the American entry enjoyed). Castellanos scored five times in the World Cup, tied for the second-most in the event. Factor in her production at Florida State and it adds up to 11 goals in 15 games this fall. The most recent of those was a screamer from 20 yards that tied Sundays game, her first appearance since returning. She was a threat the entire game.USC survives a slip in race for No. 1 seedGeography alone makes a Pac-12 weekend swing through Utah and Colorado a challenge. It is compounded this season by the fact that the Utes and Buffaloes are good teams headed to the NCAA tournament. So No. 4 USC coming out of Thursdays game at (not for much longer) unranked Utah with a 1-1 draw after a potential winner was waved off for offside promised to be only as big a deal as its response warranted. It turns out it wasnt a very big deal.USC kept a firm grip on a 3-0 win at Colorado on Sunday, the first time all season the Buffaloes allowed more than one goal in regulation at home. Alex Anthony scored two opportunistic goals, Savannah Levin scored on a well-executed corner kick and one of the best defenses this side of West Virginia looked the part. That matters because Stanford, South Carolina and West Virginia (in the order ranked in the most recent RPI) have the top three seeds in the NCAA tournament almost locked down. It is the fourth of the top seeds, which come with the chance to host through the quarterfinals, that looks like it is up for grabs. One candidate, BYU, cant do much to help its cause in the final week of the regular season. That leaves USC with one huge opportunity Friday against UCLA, which suffered far more on the road in losses at both Utah and Colorado.Missouri and Florida poised for an SEC sequelTurn on the SEC Network this week (shameless plug), and there is a good chance you will see soccer, all nine games from the SEC tournament on either that network or ESPNU. While the team to see remains No. 2 South Carolina, which closed an unbeaten regular season and swept the conference awards for coach, offensive player and defensive player of the year, the game with the most long-term consequence may be a quarterfinal between Florida and Missouri. Mostly thats because the Tigers couldnt solve the Gators in a 1-0 loss this past week.Had that result gone the other way, Floridas hopes for a top-eight seed in the NCAA tournament would have taken a hit and Missouri would have solidified its case for an at-large bid to the big tournament. Instead, we get to do it all over again with the same stakes. It will feature SEC freshman of the year Sarah Luebbert putting her 10 goals for Missouri up against Savannah Jordans 13 goals. Bulls Jerseys 2019 . The home side created most of the chances but struggled to break down Braunschweigs resilient defence, resulting in the Bundesligas 1,000th scoreless draw. Chicago Bulls Pro Shop . Barcelona also left injured defenders Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba out of its squad for the trip to Glasgow. That means that Marc Bartra will probably start again in the centre of the defence alongside Gerard Pique. https://www.cheapbulls.com/ . Shot outdoors against the stunning backdrop of Banff, Alta., the networks 30-minute original production airs tonight at 8pm et/5pm pt on TSN2. The four All-Star teams will play for $100,000 in prize money during TSNs annual skins game, airing live this weekend on TSN from The Fenlands Banff Recreation Centre. Chicago Bulls Store . Canada is now down to its 22-player limit, although but players wont be registered until Christmas Day. Changes could still be made as a result of a suspension or injury. Custom Chicago Bulls Jerseys . -- The Sacramento Kings are set to become the first major professional sports franchise to accept Bitcoin virtual currency for ticket and merchandise purchases. If I had to use one word to describe the Killer Instinct tournament, it would be unpredictable. Although the character selection was rather standard, the results were wild and the play was unorthodox.First up is the list of upsets that occurred before the top eight of the tournament began. The elimination of popular pick Deon Thompxson Thompson by Jonathan RicoSuave Deleon was a shock. RicoSuave, who took ninth place, might have been last years Evo champion, but he was far from a sure thing in this years Killer Instinct competition. In addition to both RicoSuave and Thompxsons early departures, Neilimen GutterMagicAlicea, one of the better bets for a Evo title, also finished in a disappointing ninth place.Despite having so many big names eliminated from the tournament before the finals even began, the top eight was still amazingly stacked. It boasted upstarts like Blue Hurricane Gamings Jamill SeaDragon Boykin and Josue Grief Herrera, a surprise contender in Paul PaulB Ramos, as well as a relatively unknown player in Jacob RL|Runex Runsewe. Among them were three monster threats (two of them previewed in our Evo primer): Circa eSports Nicolas Nicky Iovene, Flipsid3 Tactics Darnell Hollywood Sleep Waller and Ultra Arcades Kenneth Bass Armas. The competition is healthy in Killer Instinct, and Evo proved that its truly anyones game. From the actual top-eight diversity to the way each and every match went down, there were no easy wins, even for favorites. PaulBs match against KI nnotable Bass proved every bit of this point.dddddddddddd If not for the massive comeback from deaths grip, Bass would have been on the shorter end of the stick. Instead, Bass identified PaulBs weaknesses for throws and used it to alternate his mix-up or grab his opponent. Even the biggest name in the bracket, Hollywood Sleep, struggled against his first opponent, Nicky. No one was safe, regardless of reputation.Your Killer Instinct champion: Hollywood SleepThe man many thought would be the Killer Instinct champion lived up to the hype and left zero doubt in the minds of the audience. He was the easy favorite when the top eight started, a favorite when the tournament began and the dominating force throughout the Saturday finals.Hollywood Sleep succeeded through superior play and character selection. When he began, it was all Arbiter, but that soon changed when he was faced up against Spinal in the winners and grand finals. There, Hollywood Sleep swapped to Gargos and crushed the hopes of naysayers.Bass gave it a great shot for a potential reset when he seemingly had Hollywood Sleep on the ropes with a victory and then a huge life bar lead, but it was not meant to be. Hollywood Sleep stepped up his aggression and clutched out every key moment and round thereafter. Hes your deserving Evo champion and the best Killer Instinct player to work the pad. ' ' '

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Austin Nichols is one of several new players that figures prominently in the rotation for No. 8 Virginia, and while he arrived as a transfer from Memphis with a reputation as a gifted offensive player, hes adapted quickly to Tony Bennetts defensive philosophy.I think we can be a pretty good team, Nichols said after leading Virginia with 11 points in a 72-32 rout of St. Francis Brooklyn on Tuesday night. Weve just to continue focusing on defense. The Cavaliers (2-0) looked in midseason form at the other end of the floor, holding the Terriers of the Northeast Conference scoreless for a stretch of more than 10 minutes in the first half. Virginia scored 20 consecutive points in that stretch to open a 35-11 lead. The Cavaliers dont have a go-to scoring option so far, and even if one surfaces, Bennett said their focus will always be the same.I think this team understands that were going to have to be so good defensively, he said. Thats going to be our ticket. The Terriers (0-2) ended the drought on two free throws by Yunus Hopkinson with 7.8 seconds left in the half. These games do one of two things for you. They either make you stronger or break you, Terriers coach Glenn Braica said.Glenn Sanabria led St. Francis with 10 points and Gunnar Olafsson had seven.Nichols, who missed Virginias two preseason scrimmages and season-opener at UNC Greensboro while serving a suspension for violating a team rule, scored on an array and shots around the basket. Jarred Reuter added nine points and London Perrantes, Marial Shayok and Mamadi Diakite each had eight for Virginia. All 11 scholarship players for the Cavaliers scored and grabbed at least one rebound. The Terriers finished 11 for 48 from the field, 22.9 percent.BIG PICTURESt. Francis: The Terriers attempted 16 3-pointers in the first half and made just one, which is not the recipe for a team from the Northeast Conference to challenge a ranked or Power Five-level school. Having already lost at North Carolina State, they continue an early season gauntlet at Providence next Monday.Virginia: The early-season indoctrination of youth into coach Tony Bennetts lineup continued as freshmen Kyle Guy (21 minutes) and Ty Jerome (10) each got significant playing time and Diakite, a redshirt freshman, played 14.THE DOWN LOWNichols has plenty of company up front in 6-11 Jack Salt, 6-9 Diakite and 6-7 Reuter, and all made contributions.Jack started and had six points and two rebounds, Reuter and Diakite each grabbed four rebounds and Diakite had a block.Me and Manadi are more like finesse players, Nichols said, and the Bruise Brothers, Jarred and Jack, theyre the bangers inside.BULLSEYEVirginia walk-on Justice Bartley was one of three walk-ons who entered the game for Virginia with about 2 minutes to play, and Bennett was thrilled to see the sophomore score his first collegiate basket on a layup with 30 seconds remaining.HE SAID ITI think its $60,000, or $80,000. -- St. Francis Brooklyn coach Glenn Braica when asked what his team gets from facing Virginia.UP NEXTSt. Francis travels north to play at Providence next Monday night.Virginia continues a three-game home-stand with a visit from Yale on Sunday. Air Max 97 Plus Saldi .C. -- Todd Fiddler scored a hat trick, including the overtime goal, as the Prince George Cougars survived an 8-7 win against the Kamloops Blazers in Western Hockey League play Sunday. Air Max 90 Uomo Saldi . Scott won the Australian PGA last week in his first event in Australia since winning the U.S. Masters in April. American Matt Kuchar, ahead by two strokes with four to play and even with Scott with one to go, double-bogeyed the 18th after taking two shots to get out of a bunker. Vans Prezzo Basso . Now tied for second in the league in shootout goals, the 24-year-old likes to see what the opposing goaltender has in store before he ultimately lands on a move. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- East Carolina coach Jeff Lebo came to John Paul Jones Arena thinking his team could be running into a buzz saw.He was right.Kyle Guy scored 13 points to lead a season-high five Virginia players in double figures, and the No. 14 Cavaliers used strong perimeter shooting to beat the Pirates 76-53 on Tuesday night.I knew we would get a spirited group after a loss at home, Lebo said. They dont lose too often at home.Virginia (8-1) had little trouble bouncing back from Saturdays loss to then-No. 25 West Virginia, its first at JPJ in two years. After trailing 16-15 with 9:26 remaining in the first half, the Cavaliers ended the period on a 27-4 run.The spurt included seven straight made 3-pointers, with three coming from Guy.A former Mr. Basketball in Indiana, Guy was held out for the final 11:27 during the loss to the Mountaineers. The freshman logged 21 minutes Tuesday, sparking Virginias early barrage from long range.I really think I can help this team, Guy said. Im not complaining about my minutes. Im fine with not playing at all. I just want my team to win.I know my minutes are going to fluctuate throughout the year. Some Ill be able to put up numbers and help this team and other games I can help this team by cheering. He did both on Tuesday. The Cavaliers finished 9 of 21 from beyond the arc, taking advantage of East Carolinas 2/3 zone.East Carolina played a lot of zone early, Virginia coach Tony Bennett said, and we shot them out of it.London Perrantes added 12 points and five assists for Virginia. Other double-digit scorers for the Cavaliers included Marial Shayok (12), Mamadi Diakite (12) and Jarred Reuter (10).East Carolina (7-3) was led by Jeremy Sheppards 17 points.BIG PICTUREEast Carolina: It was East Carolinas first game against a Power Five team this season. The Pirates entered John Paul Jones Arena searching for their first win over a ranked opponent since Dec. 30, 2002, wwhen they beat then-No.dddddddddddd13 Marquette and Dwyane Wade. Theyve never defeated a ranked team on the road. ... East Carolina, picked to finish seventh in the 11-team American Athletic Conference, is looking for its first winning season since 2012-13. It features three players averaging at least 12 points per game.Virginia: Coming off a competitive week that included games against West Virginia and Ohio State, the Cavaliers werent expected to be tested Tuesday. The game against the Pirates gave Bennett another opportunity to work different combinations as the team continues its quest for an identity in the post following the Nov. 18 dismissal of Austin Nichols. Virginia, after being outscored by a combined 26 points in the paint against the Mountaineers and Buckeyes, was plus-26 vs. East Carolina. A Dec. 21 road matchup with Ivan Rabb and California should reveal plenty about this team on the interior. Each game presents different matchups, Bennett said, but we tried to be a little more intentional getting to the paint off the dribble, dropping passes, throwing it inside.SHARING THE WEALTHVirginia assisted on all 15 of its first-half field goals, and 22 of 30 for the game. Four different Cavaliers finished with at least three assists.BIG MAN SHUT DOWNEast Carolina 7-foot-1 center Andre Washington, who entered averaging 9.8 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, was held scoreless with four rebounds. Most of the time, if were going against a big guy and he gets it, we try to trap the post, Bennett said. Thats a staple of our defense, to try to be disruptive. I thought for the most part we did a good job. Its hard to score out of that.UP NEXTThe Pirates are off until Dec. 15, when they host College of Charleston. The Cavaliers are off until Dec. 17, when they host Robert Morris. ' ' '
