CLEVELAND -- Baseball commissioner Rob Manfred is hopeful an agreement on a new labor contract will be reached before the current deal expires Dec. 1.Negotiators for management and the players association have been meeting in New York this week. The 2006 contract was announced during the World Series and the 2011 agreement on Nov. 22.There are certain natural deadlines that kind of flow around the end of the World Series and then through the expiration date of the agreement, Manfred said Wednesday before Game 2 between the?Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians. Each of the last couple of times, weve either gotten it done during the World Series or a few days afterwards. I remain optimistic that were going to be in that same window in terms of getting it done.Primary issues include luxury tax thresholds, managements desire for a draft of international amateur players, changes in schedule rules to ease travel and international play, such as regular-season games in London. Baseball has not had a work stoppage since the 1994-95 strike that led to the cancellation of the World Series for the first time in 90 years.Manfred was managements primary negotiator for the past three labor deals, then he succeeded Bud Selig as commissioner in January 2015. Former All-Star first baseman Tony Clark is leading players in talks for the first time; he took over as union head following the death of Michael Weiner in November 2013.Manfred said that whether an agreement is reached during this years Series depends on how long the World Series goes.On other topics:RatingsClevelands 6-0 win over Chicago?on Tuesday night drew the highest rating on Fox for a Series opener since 2009. Viewers are intrigued by the Cubs quest for their first title since 1908; the Indians have not won since 1948.An average of 19.4 million viewers watched on Fox, up 30 percent from the 14.9 million average for the?Kansas City Royals 14-inning Game 1 win over the New York Mets last season. We define our postseason challenge as finding narratives that takes our tremendous seasonlong, local audiences and draws them into the postseason, even if their team is not there in the postseason, Manfred said. I think that the narrative surrounding 68 years in Cleveland and 108 years in Chicago is exactly the recipe that we need to take that tremendous local fan interest that goes on all season long and draws it into the postseason. And the rating last night was a first indication that that narrative is going to be powerful.Olympics/World Baseball ClassicIt is imperative that our sport continue to develop a broader international footprint, Manfred said. It is the way that the media landscape is going to evolve; attracting international audiences is going to be absolutely crucial. I think its an area where we need to continue to focus. Our players need to be prepared to go to different countries and play, because I think its crucial to building the popularity of the game in other countries. The next World Baseball Classic is scheduled for March.Given the difficulties associated with playing major league players in the Olympics, I think its important for baseball to continue to have a premier international event. We need to work hard to make sure that the WBC is that event, he said.Indians logoManfred plans to meet with Indians owner Paul Dolan following the Series to discuss the teams continued use of the controversial Chief Wahoo logo. The smiling, red-faced symbol has stirred strong opinions for years. Manfred said he understands that particular logo is offensive to some people, and all of us at Major League Baseball understand why.Manfred also appreciated the segment of fans who are attached to Chief Wahoo, which still appears on some of the Indians caps and sleeves of game jerseys. The Indians dropped Chief Wahoo as their primary logo three years ago, replacing it with a block C, but that isnt enough for some groups who want it abolished completely.Manfred said he and Dolan agreed to put off discussion until after the Series.Oakland and Tampa ballparksI think both Tampa and Oakland are major league markets, and we need major league-quality facilities in those two markets, Manfred said. The St. Petersburg City Council voted in January to give the?Rays?permission to search for new ballpark sites on both sides of Tampa Bay. The teams current lease at Tropicana Field expires in 2027.I dont see me in a position of making an immediate timetable or putting a timetable out there immediately, because were far enough away from the end of the lease, Manfred said. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- Rookie Gary Sanchez keeps putting up numbers at an astounding rate -- and putting the New York Yankees in position to make a run at a playoff spot.Sanchez hit two more homers and drove in five runs, Masahiro Tanaka won despite allowing four home runs in the same inning and the Yankees beat Tampa Bay 11-5 on Wednesday night. Its hard to believe, New York manager Joe Girardi said of Sanchez. I havent seen anything like it.The Yankees moved within 2 1/2 games of Baltimore for the second AL wild-card spot. New York also would have to jump over Seattle, Houston and Detroit to earn a postseason berth.Sanchez homered in his fourth straight game. The catcher hit a three-run shot in a four-run second off Alex Cobb (1-1) and added his 19th homer in 43 games this season on a solo drive in the sixth against Justin Marks. What hes doing is so impressive, said teammate Brian McCann, who had four hits in his 1,500th major league game.Including two games last season, Sanchez became the first player in major league history to hit 19 homers in his first 45 games. Wally Berger, with the Boston Braves in 1930, went deep 19 times in his first 51 games. Its great when you achieve something like that, but what makes it better is that youre helping the team win, Sanchez said through a translator.Sanchez was hit on the left arm by a back swing in the ninth but stayed in the game and later said he was fine.Sanchez has eight shots in his last 12 games after a 10-game home-run drought.Tanaka (14-4) won his seventh straight decision. He was staked to a 7-0 lead entering the bottom of the third before Tampa Bay teed off.Bobby WWilson led off with a home run.dddddddddddd After Tanaka got two consecutive outs, Evan Longoria, Brad Miller and Corey Dickerson hit three consecutive shots. The four home runs in an inning set a Rays record.Strange, Girardi said.Probably its a first, Tanaka added through a translator. The sharpness of the ball wasnt there tonight. So, it was a grind.Tanaka joined Zack Greinke, Collin McHugh and Justin Verlander as the only pitchers to give up four homers in an inning this season. He became the first Yankees pitcher to do it since Chase Wright on April 22, 2007, at Boston.Miller hit another solo shot in the eighth to give him 30 homers this season.Cobb, making his fourth start since returning from Tommy John surgery, allowed seven runs and nine hits in 1 1/3 innings. No concerns with the elbow, Cobb said. Im very thankful that Im healthy. Theres no physical questions.TRAINERS ROOMYankees: 3B Chase Headley was out of the lineup for the third straight game but hopes to play Thursday.Rays: OF Steven Souza Jr. had left hip surgery and is expected to be ready for spring training.TANAKA TIMETanaka had not given a homer in 17 of his previous 30 starts this season. ... LINCOLN, Neb. -- Nebraska hadnt planned to run its offense through Tai Webster and Jack McVeigh Saturday. It just worked out that the pair each had career scoring nights to lead the Huskers over Louisiana Tech 65-54.Webster had 17 of his 23 points in the first half, many of them coming off drives to the basket on which he either scored or went to the free throw line where he hit 7 of 8 shots. It just kind of played out that way, Webster said of his drives. Theyre a real aggressive defensive team and they force a lot of turnovers, obviously, Im living proof of it. I was just trying to match the aggression and not let me be on the back foot from it. Just attack them, bring the game to them.McVeigh scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half after the Bulldogs sent multiple defenders at Webster.Honestly, the shots just came to me, McVeigh said. They extended the pressure and with the pressure comes rotations and with rotations theres an open man. My teammates found me. Four of the six (field goals) were assisted on. Theyre easy looks when Im getting good passes from my teammates.Nebraska (3-0) led 45-41 when McVeigh hit a 3-pointer with 11:56 left, followed that up with a layup and Evan Taylor knocked down a jumper with 9:53 remaining that put the Huskers up 52-41.Louisiana Tech (1-2) traded baskets with Nebraska over the next six minutes, with Ed Morrow Jrs dunk giving the Huskers a 60-50 lead with 3:53 left. But Nebraska didnt hit another field goal. The Bulldogs Erik McCree hit a pair of jumpers to cut the Nebraska lead to six with 57 seconds left. But McVeigh hit two of three free throws and Webster added a pair to seal the win.Theres no question, we really just couldnt get over the hump and really build some momentum, said Louisiana Tech coach Eric Konkol. It seemed like every time we got close, we missed a shot or we turned it over or theyd get a bucket on the other end. We just couldnt get over the hump tonight. Got to give them a lot of credit. I thought they played some stingy defense and made it very difficult on us.Nebraska coach Tim Miles also praised the defense of his six primary players and particularly their toughness at the end.I thought the last four minutes we were a very, very tough team, Miles said. I thought there was a stretch in there where they were out-toughing us. But I thought we finished it the way they were doing it earlier. That was really important. Were not going to win otherwise.Nebraska won the game at the free throw line, outscoring Louisiana Tech by 15 from the stripe. The Huskers hit 11 of 12 first half free throws while Louisiana Tech was just 4 of 10. Nebraska hit 10 of 12 free throws in the second half. The Bulldogs were 2 of 2.McCree led Louisiana Tech with 16 points.QUOTABLEMcVeigh and Webster are roommates and were asked who had to buy dinner since they both had career highs Saturday. Webster replied: I guess I have to, hes the older one. Ill probably cook something. Out of the two, Im the best. He hooked me up the other day with some good seafood. So well see.THE BIG PICTURENebraska: Nebraska continues to search for production from its bench. SEATTLE -- Scott Kazmir feels hes a complete pitcher now, not just a hard thrower. Kazmir allowed just one hit over his eight innings, Michael Bourn hit his first career grand slam and the Cleveland Indians downed the Seattle Mariners 10-1 Wednesday afternoon. The only hit Kazmir (6-4) gave up was a clean leadoff single to centre by Justin Smoak in the fifth. Kazmir struck out seven, walked two and allowed an unearned run. Kazmir came up with Tampa Bay in 2004 and was 55-44 in his six seasons before being traded for the Angels in 2009. The Angels paid him more than $35 million but he lost his velocity and command, won just 11 games before being released in 2011. He played in the Independent League last season. "Im even better now. I feel Im a more complete pitcher," said Kazmir, who signed a free-agent deal with the Tribe. "I dont have to throw hard every pitch. I can throw hard when I need it but Im throwing my secondary pitches more now. Im more of a complete pitcher." He nearly was a complete-game pitcher against the Mariners. Kazmir, who threw 103 pitches, pretended to hide from manager Terry Francona when he came down the dugout in the eighth to tell him his day was over. "I wanted to go out there for last one," Kazmir said. "But I understand." Kazmir has thrown just one complete game in his 198 career starts. That was a two-hit 3-0 shutout on July 3, 2006 with Tampa Bay against Boston. Vinnie Pestano took over in the ninth. "For what hes been through and where hes at, that (working the ninth) would have been more managing with my heart than my brain." Francona said. "From day one hes been great. Hes had a couple rocky starts but hes been a good pitcher for us," he added. "Were proud of him because hes come a long way. He felt he had a lot to prove and hes certainly done that. Hes got a lot of baseball left in him." Kazmir is now 3-0 with a 1.60 ERA with 35 strikeouts and 12 walks over his past seven starts. "He had a little bit of everything," said Smoak, who got the one hit off Kazmir. "His fastball was deceptive. He is throwing a cutter now and Ive never seen that before. He had a good ball game." Bourn blew the game open in the fifth with his slam on a full-count pitch from reliever Hector Noesi. Asdrubal Cabrera had two hits, including his eighth home run. Carlos Santana had three hits, including a pair of RBI doubles. It was the ninth time the Indians have scored at least 10 runs this season and the 14th time Seattle has allowed 10 or more. The Indians had lost four of their first five games out of the break and had fallen to 3 1/2 games behind Detroit in the AL Central. The loss ended the Mariners eight-game win streak, their longest since Aug. 14-22, 2012. They were going for their first nine-game streak since May 27-June 5, 2003. Joe Saunders (9-9) took the loss. He lasted just 4 2-3 innings, allowing five earned runs on nine hits, walking three and striking out five. He entered the game with a 4-0 record and 1.73 ERA in his previous four starts and is now 11-4 with a 2.90 ERA in 19 career starts at Safeco Field. "I felt like I was all around the plate today," Saunders said. "Henry (catcher Henry Blanco) did a good job back there. We just flat-out got out-played, out-pitched, out-hit. Just one of those days." From the first pitch, the Indians - and Bourn - had Saunders off-balance. Bourn opened with a drag bunt, easily beating the throw. Nick Swisher walked and Jason Kipnis advanced the runners with a sac-bunt. Cabrera followed with a two-run double into the left-centre gap. Cabrera came home on Santanas ground-rule double to left for a 3-0 score. "Bournsey set the tone like that," Francona said. "Playing with the lead is welcomed any time." The Mariners got a gift run in the second. With two outs and Jason Bay on first, Michael Saunders bounced to shortstop Cabrera. He threw wide of second for an error and Bay raced home. The Mariners returned the favour in the third when centre-fielder Michael Saunders miss-read a Cabrera flyball for a two-base error. Santana drove him home with his second straight double into the left-field corner. The Tribe rallied in the fifth after two outs. Mark Reynolds singled and Yan Homes walked, ended Saunders outing. Noesi walked Drew Stubbs and Bourn cranked a fastball over the right-centre wall, his third home run. "To be honest, I seen a good pitch out of his hand and I was just trying to put the bat on the ball," Bourn said. "I wasnt trying to do too much but I guess thats when it happens." NOTES: Manager Eric Wedge, taken to the hospital before Mondays game because of light-headedness, was released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon. He was said to have suffered a "very mild stroke." He is not expected to manage the team until at least Aug. 5. . Bourns run in the first inning was the 500th over his career. . of the 12 games these two teams have played against each other this season, this was the first visitor victory. Joakim Nordstrom Jersey . The news was first reported on Gonzalezs Twitter account and confirmed by the Rockies. Gonzalez has a six-week window before position players have their first workout at spring training in Arizona. Torey Krug Jersey . As the crowd erupted, Davis knocked the ball off the glass and back into his hands. With 1:14 to go in overtime, Davis sixth block also became his 17th rebound. That, along with his 32 points -- which tied a career high -- proved too much for Denver to overcome, and the Pelicans held on for their third straight victory, 111-107 on Sunday night. http://www.thebostonbruinshockey.com/adam-oates-hockey-jersey/ .C. -- Manny Malhotra had two goals and an assist, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 6-3 win over the Ottawa Senators on Saturday. Kevan Miller Jersey . Nigeria beat surprise package Ethiopia 2-0 in the second leg of their playoff for a comfortable 4-1 aggregate victory. Victor Moses converted a 20th-minute penalty after an Ethiopian handball, and Victor Obinna made certain of Nigerias place in Brazil with his powerful free kick in the 82nd at UJ Esuene Stadium. Milan Lucic Jersey . Nathan MacKinnon, Jamie McGinn and Jan Hejda also scored for the Avalanche, who won despite being outshot 38-23. MacKinnons goal, also on the power play, came with just over a minute remaining. The game of cricket is constantly evolving. This week, for instance, there was a choice of vastly contrasting Test matches from three different countries, whereas 40 years ago you were lucky if the last session of a days play was on television.Despite the drawn match at Sabina Park, theres a greater percentage of results in the modern game. Scoring rates are up, largely influenced by the need for haste in T20 cricket, where sixes soar over shorter boundaries, propelled by booming bats. Theres also less pad play, with the threat of the DRS hanging over batsmens heads like a poised guillotine. The game also keeps regenerating, with stars like Virat Kohli, Steven Smith, Joe Root and Kane Williamson stepping out of the shadows of retired masters. At the other end of the pitch, Mitchell Starc, Kagiso Rabada, R Ashwin and Yasir Shah are ensuring that pace and wily spinners continue to be a viable threat in the game. However, if you want a contrast to show how cricket and society have changed drastically, turn the clock back to 1975. It was a scorching summer in England, and perhaps the seasons madness can be blamed on excessive heat. The first indication this summer was different occurred when streaker Michael Angelow painted an amusing picture at Lords in just a pair of sneakers and socks. Having been induced by a bet, he hurdled the stumps at both ends, thankfully (for him) managing to clear the bails comfortably.Legendary broadcaster John Arlott was in the radio booth and I can imagine him describing the aftermath in his distinctive Basingstoke brogue: All in readiness now for the resumption of play… two balls remaining.Where streakers are now slapped with a life ban and hefty fines at many venues, Angelow encountered a judge with a sense of humour. On hearing that Angelow had embarked on his stunt for £20, the judge said: Well have that then, and there was no further punishment. Having survived a streaker at Lords, the Australians moved on to Headingley, assuming the madness would abate in the cooler climes of Yorkshire.ddddddddddddWe were mistaken but not before an enthralling Test match had unfolded over four days. On the penultimate evening, Australia required a further 225 runs with seven wickets in hand and opener Rick McCosker poised on 95, in sight of his first Test century.McCosker was thwarted, not by good bowling but a pitch that was dug up and had oil spilled on it by a London East End protest group, headed by a man named Peter Chappell. The group arranged a series of protests over London cab driver George Davis 20-year gaol sentence for armed robbery. The match was eventually abandoned because the nature of the pitch had been irreversibly changed. The teams then travelled to London for the final Test at The Oval. The night before the Test, my brother Gregs phone rang in his hotel room. A distinctive Cockney accent enquired: Peet-ur Chappell here. Could I get a couple of tickets for the Test match? Unfazed by his namesakes hijinks at Headingley, Greg replied: Peter, Im happy to get you tickets for the Test as long as you promise not to dig up the pitch.Peter kept his end of the bargain but a plain-clothes policeman told me over a drink after play that some copycats had tried to get under the covers and dig up the Oval pitch the previous evening. I then asked if Davis was actually guilty and the policeman explained there was no doubt in his mind. He then added that if Davis was freed, hed soon be back in gaol because he was a recidivist. Sure enough, Davis was set free in 1976 and two years later he was back in gaol after admitting to an armed bank robbery.Ah, the good old days! The 1950s musical comedy about cockney spivs was spot on with the hit song Fings Aint Wot They Used To Be. ' ' '

GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- Robert Griffin IIIs first preseason play with the?Cleveland Browns?was a 49-yard completion down the sideline. That play was the highlight of two series in which Griffin completed 4 of 8 passes for 67 yards -- with one interception at the goal line.Griffins first drive in the 17-11 loss was his best. Facing mainly?Green Bay Packers?starters, Griffin completed passes of 49 yards to Terrelle Pryor, 7 yards to Gary Barnidge and 8 yards to Pryor to convert a third down.It was a great play by TP, Griffin said of the pass to Pryor. He tracked the ball down and has been doing that all offseason and all of training camp. He made a play for us. We are going to need those kind of plays to win games. Two plays later, Griffin tried to hit Barnidge down the middle of the field. Griffin threw as if Barnidge would take his route inside, but Barnidge kept running down the field.Packers safety Micah Hyde?then made the diving interception. Barnidge went to Griffin after the play and appeared to take responsibility for the miscue. We have some work to do, Browns coach Hue Jackson said. We had some chances, but we have to not turn the ball over. One of our goals is to not turn the ball over. If you dont turn it over, mostly good things are going to happen.Griffin took responsibility for the miscue.?Thats on me, he said. Im the quarterback. I have to make sure we are not hurting ourselves with penalties or turnovers.Griffin quarterbacked one more possession, and he was not productive against the backups. Our operation was smooth getting in and out of the huddle, getting the plays and making the calls, Griffin said. We had a few mistakes, but overall, I thought it was good for us to get out and go against another team. We look forward to getting back on the field during the next preseason game.In four more pass attempts, Griffin had one 3-yard completion to Barnidge. He then missed three throws in a row, badly overthrowing Taylor Gabriel?on third down. One of his incompletions on his second possession came when he threw a screen pass that was heading straight to the ground. In two series, Griffin had two first downs, one interception and one botched handoff that he was able to recover. Forty-nine of his 67 yards came on one play. Griffins rating for his first two series with the Browns: 39.1.Im the quarterback, Griffin said. I have to make sure we are not hurting ourselves with penalties or turnovers.Meanwhile, rookie Cody Kessler had a not-so-memorable debut. Kessler threw a 10-yard touchdown on his first pass, but then ran out the back of the end zone as he escaped the rush. Kessler followed with another safety late in the fourth quarter. Played much better today than I did a couple days ago. Physically I feel good. So looking forward to the weekend.Murray took over the No. 1 ranking at the Paris Masters this month, but Djokovic can grab it back if the second-ranked Serb does better at the season-ending tournament. Djokovic has already qualified for the semifinals.Murray will next face Milos Raonic on Saturday, while Djokovic meets Kei Nishikori.(Raonic) obviously serves big, goes for his shots. He moves forward when he has the chance. I think he probably likes the conditions here. Its a little bit quuicker, Murray said.dddddddddddd You dont normally get loads of opportunities against the big servers. Then it comes down to when you do get those chances, whether you take them or not.Murray has won all six of his meetings with Raonic this year, including a straight-sets victory in the Wimbledon final.Ive created a few opportunities in the matches. When theyve come, Ive been pretty clinical, Murray said. Ill need to be the same tomorrow if I want to win.In Fridays late match, Marin Cilic beat Nishikori 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 after the semifinal spots had already been decided. In an early match at the O2 Arena, Murrays brother Jamie ensured he will finish the year the as the top-ranked doubles player, along with partner Bruno Soares.Regardless of what happens over the weekend, we can look back on this year and be very proud of what weve done as a family, Andy Murray said. SINGAPORE -- Nico Rosberg set the fastest time in practice Friday for the Singapore Grand Prix, while Mercedes teammate and title rival Lewis Hamilton could manage only seventh after being hampered by a hydraulics failure.Rosberg, who has won the past two races and trails Hamilton by only two points, recovered from a crash into a tire barrier in the first session at the Marina Bay street circuit. In the night session -- with greater grip and in conditions more representative of what they will face in Saturdays qualifying and Sundays race -- he was a quarter of a second faster than Ferraris Kimi Raikkonen, with Red Bulls Max Verstappen a further tenth of a second back in third. The presence of Mercedes, Ferrari, and Red Bull in close proximity at the top of the timesheets promises a hard-fought qualifying and race, living up to expectations that this grand prix was one in which the usually dominant Mercedes could be vulnerable. The headline times promised a tight qualifying shootout, while the long-run times during Fridays sessions were also close, indicating an even contest Sunday.Daniel Ricciardo was fourth fastest, only a couple of hundredths of a second behind teammate Verstappen despite the young Dutchman having the advantage of the exclusive use of the upgraded Renault engine while Ricciardo used the old version.Ferraris Sebastian Vettel was fifth and Nico Hulkenberg of Force India sixth ahead of Hamilton. The Briton sat out the last third of the evening session due to low hydraulic fluid pressure, and there was not enough time to get it fixed and return him to the track.Even before that, Hamilton was struggling on the ultra-soft tire, with which the fastest times were set, having twice run wide off the racing line.It doesnt look like anything serious, Hamilton said of the hydraulics issue. The guys are working on it and it should be fine for tomorrow, which is the main thing. Our pace looked OK today, definitely much better than last year so Id say were looking relatively strong. The two practice sessions represented a reversal of fortunes for the Mercedes rivals, as it was Rosberg who had the major problem in the early session. The German badly misjudged the tricky left-hand turn 18 and crashed nose first into the safety barrier before limping back to the pits with his front wing missing.Barring unforeseen circumstances, Rosberg will start his 200th career grand prix here.Toro Rossos Carlos Sainz Jr. was eighth fastest and his teammate Daniil Kvyat 10th, separated by McLarens Fernando Alonso. MOSCOW -- Russian President Vladimir Putin called Friday for a new anti-doping commission to be created to shape Russias future strategy, as the country faces possible exclusion from the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.Putins intervention came as former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev wrote to International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach to oppose a blanket ban on the Russian team, saying that a collective sanction was unacceptable.Putin did not directly address allegations that Russian government officials helped to cover up hundreds of doping cases, but said the state was resolutely opposed to performance-enhancing drug use.In sport there is not and cannot be a place for any doping, Putin said. Sport must be clean, and an athletes health must be properly protected. He added there was a need to cooperate closely on doping with the International Olympic Committee and the World Anti-Doping Agency, the latter of which welcomed Thursdays court ruling to uphold a ban on Russias scandal-hit track and field team.Putin told a meeting of Russias cabinet that the commission, under the direction of the Russian Olympic Committee, would provide rapid development and tough control for the effective realization of a national plan on the fight against doping. He added that the commission would be independent and would include Russians and foreigners in the fields of medicine, law and sports administration. He did not give a timescale for the commission to begin its work.Putin proposed 81-year-old Vitaly Smirnov, an honorary member of the International Olympic Committee member and a veteran of Russian and Soviet sports administration, to lead the panel.Such a commission should be headed by a person with an absolutely unimpeachable reputation, who has the trust and respect of the Olympic family, Putin said. There is such a person in our country and he is Vitaly Georgievich Smirnov.Smirnov once served as the Soviet Unions deputy sports minister and helped to organize the 1980 Olympics in Moscow.Smirnov, a former IOC vice president, was among five IOC members given a serious warning in 1999 for their role in the Salt Lake City bid scandal. A total of 10 members resigned or were expelled for receiving cash, gifts and other improper inducements during the citys winning bid for the 2002 Winter Games.Smirnov suggested in televised comments that the Russian doping scandal was a series of misunderstandings, and said the new commission would aim to eradicate performance-enhancing drug use from sport entirely. We will work to eliminate the problem, he said.In a rare intervention on sports matters, the 85-year-old Gorbachev wrote an open letter to Bach, saying a ban on the whole Russian team would unfairly punish clean athletes.I am worried and deeply upset by the possibility that in the case of a ban on Russian athletes competing in the Olympics, the innocent will be punished along with the guilty, he wrote in the letter, published on his website. For me the principle of collective punishment is unacceptable. Steve Nash Jersey . NEW ORLEANS -- It took Cam Newton nearly an hour to show up for his postgame interview after the Carolina Panthers fourth straight loss Sunday. He was in a much bigger hurry once he got there, walking out after 90 seconds of terse, sullen responses. If there was any good news for the defending NFC champion Panthers (1-5), Newton resembled his old self during -- and after -- a 41-38 loss to the New Orleans Saints.Back from a concussion that sidelined him for a week, he rallied Carolina from a 21-0 deficit to tie the score in the fourth quarter. But he had a hard time handling the frustration of another tough defeat. We just have to find ways to win football games, he said.He did his best to reverse the slide, throwing for 322 yards and two touchdowns. He then ran 2 yards to bring the Panthers within 38-36 with 2:58 remaining before connecting with Devin Funchess on a tying 2-point conversion. But he had to watch from the sideline as Drew Brees, who threw for 465 yards, guided the Saints to a winning 52-yard field goal with 11 seconds left.He (Newton) did great, said tight end Greg Olsen, who had a team-high 94 yards on six catches. We scored 38 points and should have had 50.Aside from acknowledging a miscommunication on an interception he threw in the end zone wwhen the Panthers trailed 21-0, Newton was in no mood to talk, He answered eight questions with a total of 51 words and responded to several inquiries by saying, Next question.ddddddddddddTeammates spoke for him.Hes a warrior, said tight end Ed Dickson, who caught Newtons second touchdown pass. Whenever No. 1 is on the field, we have a chance to win.Newton, who returned to practice on Wednesday and was cleared to play Saturday, ran only twice but completed several passes when he scrambled out of the pocket.Cam was not limited at all in his mobility, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. He made some really good decisions. When you score 38 points, you need to give yourself more of a chance to win.Heading into their bye week, the Panthers are running out of chances to turn around their season. Although Newton played well, Carolina bore little resemblance to the team that won its first 14 games of 2015 on the way to the Super Bowl. This is not the team from last year, wide receiver Ted Ginn, Jr. said. Thats what everybody was expecting, but its not. Were still finding ourselves.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '

The National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC) has served a notice on the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports in response to a petition filed by former Indian middle-distance runner Santhi Soundarajan.Ten years ago Santhi was stripped of her Doha Asian Games silver medal (800m) and banned from competing in all events after she failed a gender test. However, in a grave breach of protocol, she is yet to receive a copy of the gender test report despite repeated requests. An athlete is entitled to a copy of the report. In March this year, Santhi wrote to the NCSC, saying she was subjected to a humiliating and unscientific gender test shortly after her second-place finish at the 2006 Games.Santhi, who comes from a poor Dalit family,?has been working as a coach at the Sports Authority of Indias (SAI) facility in Mayiladuthurai, Tamil Nadu, for the past two years. In her complaint to the NCSC, Santhi also alleged that she has been facing discrimination on grounds of caste at her workplace. The NCSC has decided to investigate allegations of injustice levelled by Santhi and sought a response in the matter from the secretary of the Department of Sports within 30 days.I sent out separate RTI queries in March this year addressed to the Athletics Federation of India, SAI and Indian Olympic Association seeking my gender test report, but was turned away and denied any information, Santhi, 35, told ESPN. That athletees like Caster Semenya and Dutee Chand are competing in the international arena despite facing a similar predicament as mine offers me hope.dddddddddddd But it also serves as a reminder that Im not as fortunate. In 2015, the Switzerland-headquartered Court of Arbitration for Sport suspended the International Association of Athletics Federations hyperandrogenism regulations for two years, stating that there was no convincing scientific evidence to support the claim that women with elevated testosterone levels hold a performance advantage over others.Santhis battle for justice has been a protracted and painful one. As the sole breadwinner of her family, which includes aged parents and four younger siblings, she has been struggling to make ends meet. From working at a brick kiln till about four years ago to her current contractual coach job, she says she enjoys little sense of freedom or security. Apart from the restoration of her medal, she is also seeking a permanent job.The inhuman manner in which the gender tests were conducted and being denied the report are a clear violation, said gender activist M Gopi Shankar, who has been working closely with Santhi. The government should voice its support for its athletes. Santhi deserves to have her medal back and lead a life of dignity. ' ' '

NEW ORLEANS -- Things were a little fuzzy for Phoenix Suns coach Earl Watson after watching Devin Booker tie the game with a tough shot at the regulation buzzer.I remember the shot, but honestly I dont remember the play, he said. Im going to watch (the game) tonight on the plane. I will collect my thoughts and will try to see what I was thinking.I know we ran that play for him for sure.Good idea.Booker scored 38 points, including the improbable jumper that tied it at the buzzer, and the Suns beat New Orleans 112-111 in overtime Friday night, keeping the Pelicans winless on the season.T.J. Warren added 18 points on 4-of-17 shooting for the Suns (2-4), while Eric Bledsoe had 17 points and Tyson Chandler had 12 points and 18 rebounds.Anthony Davis had 22 points and 11 rebounds for the Pelicans (0-6), while forward Terrence Jones, starting in place of the suspended Dante Cunningham, had 19 points. Though the Pelicans outshot the Suns 46 percent to 43 percent, they managed to shoot just 53.6 percent from the free throw line (15 of 28). The Suns finished 24 of 28 at the line. The win was second in a row for the Suns who started the season with a four-game losing streak. The Pelicans started 0-6 for the second straight season. Its good that were able to get these wins, especially as a young team, Chandler said. Well start trying to close these teams out earlier, but it does build character in the long run.I thought we were on the right track before, but unfortunately we got a couple of losses. But I definitely like the way weve been playing all season.Booker tied the game at 102 with a fadeaway jumper from the side as time expired. He had made a 3-pointer to tie the game at 100. With 11.7 seconds remaining, Lance Stephenson took the entry pass down the left side of the lane and threw up a fall-away floater, which he watched go in as he fell to the court, leaving 2.1 seconds to play.He made a great shot, a contested jump shot, Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry said. Hes a great player.A back-and-forth overtime ended with Pelicans guard ETwaun Moore making two free throws with 8.6 seconds left after being fouled by Booker, who fouled out. But Warren took an inbounds pass from P.J. Tucker, cut through the lane and dunked, giving the Suns a 112-111 lead. Moore missed a jump shot as time expired.I thought we became too cautious at times, Gentry said. You cant play that way. If it doesnt work out, it doesnt work out, but you cant be cautious. It was the second straight overtime game for both teams. The Suns beat Portland 118-115 on Wednesday night in Phoenix, while New Orleans fell 89-83 at Memphis the same night.TIP-INSSuns: Booker had three of the Suns 8 3-pointers for the game. ... Bledsoe led the Suns with four assists.Pelicans: F Dante Cunningham was suspended for the game by the NBA after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle in a negligent manner while exhibiting the effects of having consumed alcohol in Washington state, according to a league press release. The NBA just let us know (today), Gentry said before the game. Its no big deal. Its something that happened and he regrets it.No other information was available from Pelicans team officials.Jones, his replacement, made the most of his first start for the Pelicans, finishing with 18 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four blocks. ... Buddy Hield and Langston Galloway combined to go 4 of 7 from 3-point range in the first 4 minutes and finished a combined 6 for 16 for the game.PELICANS SCARE:With 4:19 left in the fourth quarter Booker bumped Davis as he raced down the court to receive a long pass from Stephenson. Davis remained on the court for some time. He returned to the game and Booker was charged with a common foul.Booker said he wasnt fazed by the boos he received after he knocked down Davis. The crowd turned against me after that AD play, but I embraced it and had fun with it, Booker said. I talked to him afterwards about it and he said that he wasnt hurt or anything by it. He did tell me I overdid it though.OVER/UNDERGentry praised Suns small forward Jared Dudley, whom he coached for four years during his tenure in Phoenix, though not without a dash of his good-natured humor.Hes the least athletic (small forward) in the history of the game, said Gentry, laughing. Hes just really smart. He found his game to be effective in this league and sometimes thats tough to do.Still, Gentry doesnt expect Dudley to transform into a rim-crashing machine this year. Asked if he thought Dudley would achieve his promise of throwing down five dunks this season, Gentry replied, Id take the under on that one.UP NEXTSuns: visit the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night.Pelicans: visit the Golden State Warriors on Monday. CLEVELAND -- Wild Thing will have to stay in the bullpen during the World Series. While actor Charlie Sheen, who played Ricky Wild Thing Vaughn in the movie Major League offered to throw out the ceremonial first pitch before one of this years World Series games, Major League Baseball said the choices have already been made.A spokesman told the AP on Friday that MLB has worked with the Indians to identify former franchise greats to throw out the first pitch for the games in Cleveland. An announcement is expected early next week. The Indians host Games 1 and 2 on Tuesday and Wednesday. If necessary, Cleveland will host Games 6 and 7 on Nov. 1-2.There had been a movement by fans on social media for Sheen to throw the first pitch and be part of the pregame festivities.Sheen got wind of the buzz and responded on Twitter, posting a photo of himself as Vaughn in his Indians uniform and wrote, Major League continues to be the gift that keeps on giving! if called upon, Id be honored.Sheen made an appearance during the playoffs at Dodger Stadium on Wednesday when the Chicago Cubs beat Los Angeles in Game 4 of the NL Championship Series.Released in 1989, Major League is a fictional account of the Indians finishing in first place with an unconventional group of players including Vaughn, who struggled to find the strike zone and warmed up to Wild Thing, a No. 1 hit song in 1966 by The Troggs. The real Cleveland Indians, who overcame injuries to win the AL Central, before knocking off Boston and Toronto in the playoffs, took a page from Major League this season.Slugger Mike Napoli and second baseman Jason Kipnis constructed a shrine in an empty clubhouse stall between their lockers like one in the movie.
