Ricky Stuarts rebuild of Canberra has gone beyond the nations capital, with the Raiders coach also credited for Mounties historic triple appearance in the NSWRL competition.Mounties, who have been the Raiders feeder club since 2012, will have three teams in as many grades in Sundays NSWRL grand final day in Sydney. Its a feat that hasnt been achieved since St George has teams in all three deciders in 1985.Mounties NSW Cup coach Steve Antonelli will field a team brimming with NRL experience against the Illawarra Cutters on Sunday. They include Shaun Fensom, Sam Williams, Brenko Lee and Jeff Lima. Its a long list of stars that Antonelli says havent kicked stones all year, despite mostly playing reserve grade as Stuart led the Raiders renaissance.Mounties will also feature in the Ron Massey Cup and Sydney Shield finals at Pirtek Stadium before its reconstruction.Antonelli said Stuart had plenty to do with the clubs success this year, despite Canberra headquarters being a 500km round trip from Mounties base in Sydneys western suburbs. One hundred per cent he can take some of the credit. Hes right behind the relationship and checks on his blokes every week, Antonelli said.Antonelli was handed a full-time job under Stuart last year, however was forced to spend half his week away from his family in Sydney to be with the Raiders in Canberra. Its just one of the small sacrifices Antonelli was willing to pay to help the clubs rebuild.Ive learnt a lot myself so I can bring that professionalism back into Mounties. Its one of the best relationships in the NRL I reckon, he said. Its an extension that people dont see. This relationship with Mounties, Stuart looks after it.Antonelli praised Fensom, Lima and Jarrad Kennedy for their form despite their lack of time in the NRL.(Fensoms) attitude is the best out of the lot of them. Him and Jeff Lima, and Jarrad Kennedys been there all year and the year before he played 24 NRL games.Theyre the ones who could kick stones, but theyre the rock of my side at the moment. T.J. Fullback J.D. Moore came up short on third down.Florida quarterback Austin Apppleby completed only seven passes on 17 attempts, but one of his connections went for a pivotal 98-yard touchdown to Tyrie Cleveland. Eddy Piniero scored the rest of Floridas points on field goals of 36, 24 and 34 yards.LSU (6-4, 4-3 SEC, No. 16 CFP) controlled most of the game and held considerable statistical advantages, outgaining Florida (8-2, 6-2, No. 23 CFP) 423 yards to 270 and holding possession for 34:02. But on three occasions, the Tigers failed to score after driving inside Floridas 10 -- the first time because of Guices fumble in the first half and the second time because of a botched field goal in the third quarter. The loss likely cost the Tigers a Sugar Bowl bid.THE TAKEAWAYFlorida: The Gators played with a lot of heart, relied heavily on their elite defense and in the end emerged with an upset victory.LSU: The Tigers two turnovers and botched field goal turned what could have been a fairly comfortable victory iinto a struggle.ddddddddddddINJURIESLSU lost a key defender in the first half when middle linebacker Kendell Beckwith needed help off the field. He spent the rest of the game on the sideline with his left knee heavily wrapped. LSU star running back Leonard Fournette, who played despite being banged up last week, came out of the game for good after being stopped short on a third-and-goal play in the second half.EMOTIONAL FLARE-UPThe two teams scuffled near the middle of the field about an hour before kickoff. Several people viewing warmups captured video they posted on social media. It was mostly yelling and shoving as coaches and police working security converged quickly to break it up. Some players also acted as peacemakers. One video captured Fournette pushing Florida defensive backs coach Torrian Gray away from a cluster of LSU players and coaches. During the opening kickoff, emotions were still running high for some, apparently. BALTIMORE -- Its tough enough to beat the Boston Red Sox these days. Give them an extra out to work with, and the task becomes even more difficult.Boston scored five unearned runs in the sixth inning after a throwing error by first baseman Chris Davis and rolled to a 5-1 victory over the Baltimore Orioles 5-1 on Wednesday night.Andrew Benintendi hit a three-run homer for the Red Sox, who will seek to complete a four-game sweep on Thursday. Boston pulled five games ahead of second-place Toronto in the AL East and six in front of Baltimore with 10 games remaining. The Red Sox trailed 1-0 in the sixth before Davis two-out miscue turned the game around. We were given a gift, Boston manager John Farrell said, and we did take every advantage of that extra out.Clay Buchholz (8-10) allowed one run and three hits over seven innings for the Red Sox. Bostons seven-game winning streak, which began with a sweep of the Yankees, is its longest since an identical run early in the 2014 season. The loss kept Baltimore a game behind the Blue Jays for the top AL wild card. The Orioles have lost five of seven, all at home, and scored only nine runs in their last five games.Theyll get it going here, manager Buck Showalter said. If we can get in, I feel real good about this group.Boston rallied against All-Star reliever Brad Brach, who replaced Ubaldo Jimenez (7-12) with two on and one out in the sixth. Aaron Hill hit a dribbler in front of the mound and beat the throw to first base following a miscommunication between Brach and catcher Matt Wieters. That loaded the bases for Jackie Bradley Jr., who struck out on a 3-2 pitch. Sandy Leon then hit a sharp grounder toward first base at Davis, who rushed an off-balance throw that whisked past Brach, allowing two runs to score.Obviously just didnt make a very good throw on it, Davis said. Probably a ball I couldve stayed back on and just gone to the bag, but I just reacted and when I went to throw, it just kind of stuck in my hand.Said Brach: I was just heading over to the bag, and when I picked up (sight) of the ball it was just coming a little hard to me and a little bit out of my reach.Benintendi hit the next pitch over the wall in right field. Its frustrating when they dont get a ball past first base, 90 feet away, and two runs score, Brach said. And obviously I need to make a better pitch on the next batter. That all but assured the Red Sox their 12th win in 15 games. They have also won seven of eight on the road. After Boston loaded the bases in the first inning but failed to score, the Orioles capitalized on the same situation in the third when Adam Jones hit a sacrifice fly.The Red Sox again filled the bases in the fourth before Leon bounced into a 3-6-1 double play. The next time Boston loaded the bases, two innings later, the Red Sox finally came through -- albeit with a little help from Davis.YOUNG PHENOMSRed Sox: Benintendi is the latest young player to come through for the Red Sox down the stretch. The rookie slugged his second homer and had a season-high three RBI. For a young kid that steps into this pennant race, hes responded very well, Farrell said.Orioles: Trey Mancini, the organizations Minor League Player of the Year, lined out as a pinch hitter.TRAINERS ROOMRed Sox: 2B Dustin Pedroia was back in the lineup after being held out Tuesday to get treatment on his left knee. . 1B Hanley Ramirez is dealing with a sore left shoulder and got the night off. He is expected to return Thursday. . RHP Steven Wright (shoulder) threw from 120 feet at the teams minor league facility in Fort Myers, Florida. ANAHEIM, Calif. -- After missing the first six games because of a concussion, Sidney Crosby has a chance to continue one of his most productive starts ever when his Pittsburgh Penguins visit the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday night at the Honda Center.Crosby enters the contest with four goals and an assist in three games since returning to the lineup Oct. 25. Three years ago, Crosby collected four goals and three assists in his first three games -- including two goals and an assist in the season opener against the visiting Ducks.Last season, the two-time winner of the Hart Memorial and Art Ross trophies waited until Nov. 25 to score his fourth goal.I know what this means to him, Penguins coach Mike Sullivan told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review regarding Crosbys quick start. Hes a focused guy. Hes a tremendous competitor and I think hes hungry for more. With Crosby on the ice, Pittsburgh won three consecutive games to take over first place in the Metropolitan Division while amassing 12 goals. Before their captains return, the Penguins scored 12 goals in six games while going 3-2-1. Four of Pittsburghs 12 goals since Crosbys arrival came from the power-play unit that includes him.Weve had a lot of movement and that shot mentality, and Sids part of that group, Sullivan told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Hes got great offensive instincts so whether hes beside the net or hes on the half-wall or hes in the slot, hes a dangerous guy, whether hes passing or shooting.Goaltender Matt Murray, who started all but three games in last seasons Stanley Cup playoffs as a rookie, makes his season debut Wednesday night after recovering from a broken hand. Murray suffered the injury while playing for Team North America in the World Cup of Hockey.ddddddddddddDefenseman Kris Letang also returns to the lineup for the first time since Oct. 18, when he sustained an upper-body injury against the Montreal Canadiens.Wednesday nights game begins the Penguins first West Coast trip. Pittsburgh faces the Los Angeles Kings on Thursday night and the San Jose Sharks on Saturday night. The Ducks are coming off Tuesday nights 4-0 rout of the Los Angeles Kings for their fourth victory in its past six games. Rickard Rakell, a restricted free agent before the season began, had a goal and two assists in his season debut nearly three weeks after signing a six-year contract worth $22.8 million Oct. 14. Rakells earned one assist on the Ducks power play, which converted twice in three opportunities.Rickys going to be a big part of our power play, right wing Jakob Silfverberg told the Orange County Register before the game. Anytime you can get your power play going, it helps the team get momentum and get all sorts of stuff going.Despite their recent success, the Ducks seek improvement. Entering Tuesday nights game against the Kings, Anaheim ranked 17th in the NHL with a 19.4 percent conversion rate on the power play and 25th with just 2.33 goals per game.I still think we have quite a bit of work to do, defenseman Cam Fowler told the Register. Theres little bits and pieces of our game that can certainly improve. I know what this team can do and I dont think weve even scratched the surface yet. ' ' '

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. -- Torian Graham scored 22 points and Shannon Evans II had 21 to lift Arizona State to an 80-71 victory over Tulane in the losers bracket of the Tire Pros Invitational.Sam Cunliffe scored 10 for the Sun Devils who pulled away from Tulane in the final seven minutes to improve to 3-1. ASU lost its first game in the tournament by 19 points to Northern Iowa.We showed up ready to play today, ASU Coach Bobby Hurley said. I dont want to make excuses, but that game (Northern Iowa) wasnt our best effort. We were lethargic the whole time. I thought we were much more aggressive defensively and when a couple of shots fell, we settled down to play pretty good offensively.Tulane (1-3) got 22 points from Melvin Frazier Jr. and 17 from Cameron Reynolds, but the Green Wave offense fizzled in the final seven minutes when the game was still within reach. We had a nice run where we got defensive stops and were taking our time on offense, Reynolds said. But as soon as we started rushing things, we let them push it back at us and didnt defend like we should.ASU had an 11-point lead at halftime, but couldnt shake the Green Wave until late in the second half.Tulane found some room taking the ball to the basket against ASUs man-to-man defense and cut their deficit to just 61-58 when Von Julien scored on a driving layup with 7:02 left in the game.ASU center Ramon Villa woke up the Devils offense with a follow-shot jam and Graham scored five straight points to push the lead back to a more comfortable 68-58 with just under five minutes left. The Green Wave never got closer than seven the rest of the game.BIG PICTUREArizona State: The Sun Devils were basically a no-show in its first game of the tournament, losing 82-63 to Northern Iowa, so the win over Tulane was a huge lift. The game against Northern Iowa didnt feel good at all, Graham said. We were much better at executing today. It feels good to come back and get a victory after the way we played.Tulane: Green Wave coach Mike Dunleavy was impressed with his teams effort as well. In that second half, we ran some nice sets, but they hit some shots at crucial times and that was the difference, Dunleavy said. Our guys played hard, but we missed some shots at the rim and they hit at the other end.THREE INSTEAD OF TWOTulane was six of 14 on 3-pointers in the first half, but only 2 of 9 from inside the arc. Cameron Reynolds, who missed his first five shots, hit three straight 3-pointers in a 2-minute stretch late in the half.UP NEXTArizona State will play Davidson Sunday in the fifth place game.Tulane, which has lost twice in the tournament, will play Missouri in the seventh place game Sunday. Despite the cost, effort and an improved steroid test, its possible that very few -- if any -- positives will be detected, Dr. Richard Budgett told The Associated Press in an interview. "We just dont know what the results from Torino will be," Budgett said. A return to the playoffs for the loudest rink in the NHL is a distinct possibility after missing out last season. But in the crazy-competitive Central Division, its going to be nip and tuck for the Winnipeg Jets to get in.It certainly doesnt help that the season begins with talented young blue-liner Jacob Trouba sitting at home after asking for a trade. Its a situation that will hang over the team until it is resolved. Hes not easily replaceable. This is, however, an organization that is beginning to truly see the fruits of a patient, well-orchestrated rebuild under GM Kevin Cheveldayoff. There is loads of young talent on this team, particularly up front, where rookie winger Patrik Laine, the No. 2 overall pick in June, is ready to take the NHL by storm. Is he the next Teemu Selanne? Thats the type of lofty comparison already associated with the Finnish goal scorer. How things play out in goal could also have a bearing on the Jets season, where highly touted youngster Connor Hellebuyck is probably already the best option, but because hes the only goalie who can go to the AHL without having to clear waivers, the Jets might start the season with veteran Ondrej Pavelec and backup Michael Hutchinson. Tough call. The Jets need to get this one right. They cant make the postseason without the best possible goaltending at hand.Best new facesLaine is going to excite fans in Winnipeg for years to come, just a perfect scenario all those years after the city fell in love with another Finnish great in Selanne. It appears Laine will begin the season on the second line with Bryan Little as his center, which is a good place to start. Look for Laine to do a lot of his damage on the power play, too.Kyle Connor has impressed at camp and in preseason and perhaps he might stick around with the big club. Only 19, the 2015 first-rounder had 35 goals and 36 assists with the University of Michigan last season. Is there a spot for him on a third line with Mathieu Perreault or do the Jets send Connor to the AHL Moose for some seasoning? Either way, we should see him at some point this season with the Jets.Biggest unknownsThere many unknowns up front, but thats a positive. This is the kind of situation Cheveldayoff wanted years ago when he took over this franchise, to arrive at camp and have serious competition for jobs among the young and talented players.Aside from Connor, who has been pushing for a job up front, add the likes of Joel Armia, Marko Dano, Nic Petan and Brandon Tanev also fighting for roles, not to mention eventually highly touted prospect Brendan Lemieux will resurface after getting injured in a rookie tournament last month (hell start the year in the AHL but dontt be surprised to see him back up at some point).dddddddddddd.The point being, the Jets have the kind of enticing options they could have only dreamed of a few years ago. Thats the product of excellent drafting and developing. On the flip side, there are unknowns on the back end, but its not for a good reason. Troubas trade request has created a hole in that blue-line corps. I think the Jets would have had Trouba play the left side in a top-four role this season. So now theres a hole there alongside Dustin Byfuglien, Tyler Myers and Toby Enstrom in that top four.Could Josh Morrissey be an option? The 2013 first-round pick (13th overall) is getting a serious look in preseason after playing his first year of pro hockey last season with AHL Manitoba. The left-handed Calgary native can play the left or right side. The Jets are telling teams who have inquired about Trouba that they want a young, left-handed, top-four type blue-liner in return. Its a high asking price, and also rare for teams to want to trade one young blue-liner for another, but thats where things stand. Could Trouba find his way back with the Jets like Jonathan Drouin did with the Tampa Bay Lightning last season after asking for a trade? Finally, theres the unknown of the goaltending situation as mentioned. The Jets need to expose a goalie for the expansion draft in June and presumably thats why they re-signed the capable backup Hutchinson to a two-year deal. The veteran Pavelec is an unrestricted free agent after the season, so nobody will be standing in Hellebuycks way a year from now. The question is, should the Jets be handing the reigns over to the kid this season? Or do you ride Pavelec one last season?Sure thingsWhen Little was injured in mid-February, it created a top line that jelled immediately in Mark Scheifele between Nikolaj Ehlers and Blake Wheeler. That unit is slated to being the season together and why not, Scheifele putting up 16 goals and 16 assists in his final 25 games last season. Why mess with that kind of chemistry? Scheifele looks like a sure thing as a bona fide No. 1 center. The fact that Team North America trusted him to join Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid on the top line in the World Cup of Hockey is telling, too.PredictionThe Nashville Predators, Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues are the class of the Central, leaving the Minnesota Wild and Jets to battle it out for fifth place in the division and potentially the last wild-card spot in the Western Conference. Im giving the nod to the Jets. Fifth in the Central. ' ' '

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Vic Fangio says he intends to return for a third year as Chicagos defensive coordinator.Fangio denied a report saying he might be out after the season because of philosophical differences with Bears coach John Fox. Fangio said there is no friction between them and he wants to return next season. Asked if he expects to remain Chicagos defensive coordinator beyond this year, he said, I do.Fangio said he wasnt aware of the report until Fox informed him.He told me about it because he was all nervous about it, so I said, `Dont worry about it, Fangio said.Big changes could be looming with the Bears last in the NFC North at 3-9 heading into Sundays game at division leader Detroit.Quarterback Jay Cutler might have played his final game in Chicago, with a season-ending shoulder injury and little guaranteed money remaining on the seven-year contract extension he signed in January 2014. Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains could be on shaky ground with the Bears 30th in points scored. But Fox -- who like Fangio is in his second year -- had high praise for his assistants.I want our whole staff back, he said. Now whether that proves to be a reality or not, things happen. Guys get jobs, get head jobs, get chances to advance their careers. Like any of the projection stuff, I just stay away from. The report about Fangio was a surprise because the defense has been one of the bright spots in a lost season.I think our staff is tremendous. ... I couldnt be more proud of our staff, Fox said. Ill just leave it at I am very, very pleased with our staff.Fangio came to Chicago with a reputation as one of the leagues top defensive coordinators following a successful four-year run in San Francisco. Chicago, which has prided itself over the years on stifling opponents with units led by Butkus and Singletary and Urlacher, had a defense that ranked among the worst in franchise history before Fangio arrived. The defense comes into Sundays game ranked seventh overall and sixth against the pass despite a lengthy line of injuries, not to mention linebacker Jerrell Freemans four-game suspension for violating the NFLs policy against performance-enhancing drugs. The Bears have been getting production from young players such as rookie linebackers Leonard Floyd and Nick Kwiatkoski.Floyd, the ninth overall pick, had two sacks in last weeks win over San Francisco. He has seven on the season, along with a fumble recovery for a touchdown and a safety, despite missing three games with injuries.Fangio insisted his relationship with Fox is fine, that it hasnt changed, and that he gets plenty of autonomy from a head coach with a defensive background. We pretty much do what I see fit to do 98 percent of the time, he said. The other two percent?Well, Im always going to leave you a little bit there. BOISE, Idaho -- On the verge of another win over a Pac-12 team on its home field, Boise State nearly crumbled in the final minutes.Fortunately the Broncos did enough over the first three quarter to hold on.Jeremy McNichols rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns, Tyler Horton returned his first career interception 85 yards for a touchdown and Boise State held on in the fourth quarter for a 31-28 win over Washington State on Saturday night.Brett Rypien threw for 299 yards, including a 47-yard touchdown to Thomas Sperbeck, but was intercepted twice in the fourth quarter, giving Washington State chances until the final play when Luke Falks desperation heave was batted down.Boise State (2-0) won its 34th straight regular season non-conference home game, knocking off the last out of conference team to win on The Blue.We did not face adversity in our first game. ... We got a chance to do that tonight, Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said.Falk was 55-of-71 passing for 480 yards and four touchdowns, but it took three quarters before he could beat the Broncos throwing downfield, hitting Tavares Martin Jr. on a 50-yard TD late in the third quarter that pulled the Cougars within 24-14. Rypien quickly answered, completing three straight passes for 68 yards before McNichols second touchdown run pushed the Broncos lead 31-14 on the first play of the fourth quarter. That proved to be enough -- barely. There were definitely some uncharacteristic mistakes I made tonight, Rypien said. But we won. Were 2-0.Falk rallied in the fourth quarter, throwing touchdown passes of 14 yards -- on fourth down -- to Jamal Morrow and hitting Gabe Marks on a 33-yard TD with 4:17 left right after Rypien was intercepted to pull within 31-28. Washington State got the ball back with a minute remaining after poor clock management by the Broncos, but the Cougars had their own problems with the clock and settled for Falks final throw that fell short.Leach ripped into his teams toughness after the loss, saying the Cougars outplayed Boise State in every other category. We outperformed them in a ton of different ways but were not tough enough, Leach said. And as a football team we have to get (a llot) tougher and right now were not very tough.dddddddddddd.Washington State (0-2) was trying to match what it did in 2001 when the Cougars won 41-20 in Boise and rebound from being stunned by FCS power Eastern Washington in last weeks opener. But the Cougars got off to an awful start with Falk getting intercepted on their opening drive deep in Boise State territory and watching Horton manage to stay inbound and sprint 85 yards to give the Broncos the early lead.It was the first of six drives by the Cougars that reached Boise State territory and failed to end in points. The Cougars had a field goal attempt blocked, punted twice and turned the ball over on downs twice inside the Broncos half of the field, the last coming when Morrow was stuffed on fourth-and-1 at the 46 with 5:12 remaining.TAKEAWAYSWashington State: Any momentum from last years nine wins and a bowl victory is gone for the Cougars. They were able to rebound a year ago after losing to FCS Portland State in the opener by winning at Rutgers, but an 0-2 start this year may be difficult to overcome with the upcoming schedule.Boise State: The Broncos remembered how to win at home. Boise State lost its final two home games of last season, the first time losing consecutive home games since 1997. They made sure it wasnt three straight.POLL IMPLICATIONSThe Broncos were on the edge of cracking the Top 25 last week. Theres a chance the Broncos could slide in this week, although the fourth quarter rally by Washington State may have taken away some votes. Either way, if the Broncos can win at Oregon State in two weeks, they should be able to break through at that point.UP NEXTWashington State: The Cougars close out their non-conference schedule as Idaho makes the 8-mile trip across the state border to face the Cougars.Boise State: The Broncos get the week off before facing a second straight Pac-12 school, traveling to Oregon State on Sept. 24.LAST WORDIt was a good test for us. It was nice to be able to see what were made of early, Boise State linebacker Ben Weaver said. ' ' '

The growing level of violent or abusive behaviour by touchline parents has sparked a call from the head of a youth league for offenders to be banned. Parents head-butting linesmen, fighting, and threatening to stab a referee - all have been reported to Surrey Youth League chairman Graham Ekins last weekend. The situation has got so bad, Mr Ekins has sent a letter to all its clubs urging them to take a tough stand by banning problem parents. One of the leagues most experienced referees has also quit and the Surrey County FA on Wednesday pledged it is investigating the string of alleged incidents.Speaking to Sky Sports News HQ, Mr Ekins said: From time to time you get a bit of lunacy out there. This weekend we had a huge amount of serious misconduct. The level of what we saw this weekend really concerned me.There must be 15,000 to 20,000 parents out there [watching SYL matches] but they need to behave in the right way.Self-policing is not working as well as I want it to work - thats seven or eight events out of 200 games this weekend. Every one of those is one event too many.He said other alleged incidents which he had been told about included abuse by two teams of a referee aged under 18, at least three games being abandoned and players threatening to smash up a changing room. Its the parents and the supporters who get carried away and lose all perspective of where they are, Mr Ekins added.I dont know what happens. They see that white touchline and a different head goes on.He is urging all clubs to take a zero tolerance stance on parents who go too far - calling for them to be banned from clubs and for the police to be called in when necessary. We will look at how we can work with the FA to bring instant justice to remove these people from the game so they cannot commit offences again, he said. This is not about the kids on the pitch, the way they play. This is about removing parents from clubs.Brighton & Hove midfielder Steve Sidwell, a guest panellist on Sky Sports News HQ, backed Mr Ekins actions. He said: Its definitely a minority. As a dad myself and going through it with my son, Ive seen it happen a few times this year.Whether its an over-protective thing for their children or their own football club, it definitely stems from what goes on on the touchlines, heated exchanges of words from parents sometimes filter onto the pitch. Its not fair for the children, they want to be there just to play football and to enjoy themselves. In its statement, the Surrey County FA said: [We] have begun to investigate the incidents through our Raising Standards Working Group which works closely with youth leagues to ensure allegations of this nature are thoroughly investigated and charged under FA regulations. The County FA support the League in stating that this type of behaviour is unacceptable. We work closely with all Leagues and Clubs to promote the Respect Programme and to address unacceptable behaviour in football both on and off the pitch. He was dismissed by the team last March after the Lightning struggled in the lockout-shortened season with a 13-18-1 record. CLEVELAND -- As the Cavaliers await word from Andrew Bynum, two other teams have joined the chase for the free agent centre. Bynum, who didnt play a single second for Philadelphia last season because of knee injuries, is considering a two-year offer from the Cavs, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Tuesday. Cleveland made the offer, which includes a team option in the second year, during his visit to the Cavs facility Monday. Bynum did not work out but the team examined him thoroughly. The person with knowledge of the negotiations spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the talks. Yahoo! Sports first reported Clevelands offer and said it was worth $24 million. While mulling Clevelands deal, Bynum visited the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday and plans to meet Wednesday with the Dallas Mavericks, his agent, David Lee, told the AP on Tuesday night. Lee said there has been no decision made on Clevelands deal. He would not say if the Hawks made Bynum an offer. Bynum lives in Atlanta and could be convinced to stay home. "I dont want to comment about any ongoing negotiations," Lee said. The 25-year-old Bynum had arthroscopic surgery on both knees in March, but the Cavs apparently are confident he will return to the form that made him one of the NBAs best centres and a two-time All-Star. Theyre also counting on him thriving under Cleveland coach Mike Brown, who has returned to the Cavs after being fired three years ago. Brown and Bynum spent oone season together with the Los Angeles Lakers and the 7-footer had his best year, averaging 18.dddddddddddd7 points and 11.8 rebounds. Over the past four seasons, Bynum has averaged 14.7 points and 9.5 rebounds. Cleveland would like to get an answer from Bynum as soon as possible, but the team did not give him any deadline. The NBAs free-agency moratorium period ends Wednesday. The Cavs have already landed forward Earl Clark and guard Jarrett Jack in free agency and are looking to move up quickly. They would immediately vault into contention in the Eastern Conference with a healthy Bynum paired with All-Star guard Kyrie Irving and a roster that includes forward Tristan Thompson, guard Dion Waiters and forward Anthony Bennett, the No. 1 overall pick in last months draft. Lee has said Bynum will be ready to play by the start of training camp. The Sixers acquired Bynum last summer from the Lakers as part of a four-team trade. But Bynum, who made $16.9 million despite not playing last season, never got healthy enough to get on the floor and the Sixers crumbled. The Cavs would be taking a risk with Bynum that could have huge rewards. He would instantly raise their profile and probably get them back to the playoffs after winning just 66 games combined the past three seasons. In giving him only a two-year deal, they would not be tying up much money which would allow them to stay flexible next summer when several top-tier free agents -- possibly LeBron James -- will be on the market. There are turning points for every professional sports league. Sometimes its the merger of two leagues such as the NFL and AFL in 1966, or the NBA and ABA 10 years later. Sometimes its the impact of a player. When Wayne Gretzky was traded to the Los Angeles Kings in 1988, the NHL didnt have another team in the United States west of Minneapolis or south of Philadelphia. When Magic Johnson and Larry Bird entered the NBA in 1979, the NBA Finals, which would become their annual stage, was still televised on tape delay. On Thursday, esports, and more specifically League of Legends, might have ushered in a turning point for an emerging league looking for the same credibility and stability as traditional sports.Riot Games, which is the developer and publisher of League of Legends, announced a series of initiatives aimed at growing the game and moving it closer to a traditional sports model. While the jury is still out whether players and team owners take to the new model, Riot hopes these moves will inject more revenue into the entire ecosystem. To help us get there, the organization said in a news release, well share [League of Legends] esports revenue streams and collaborate with our partners to develop new business models and actively shape the league. We want these partners to have permanent stakes, to be invested in a stable future and profit from the continued success of the sport. The announcement came after a series of high-profile events - from two North American League of Legends Championship Series (NA LCS) teams, Renegades and Team Impulse, being kicked out of the league to a public dispute between Riot co-founder Marc Merrill and Team Solomid owner Andy Dinh - called into question the structure and practices of the company. There are obviously many differences between esports and traditional sports, but talk to the owners of the 10 teams competing in the NA LCS and theyll tell you it starts at the top. Unlike traditional sports where individual teams make up the ownership group of leagues like the NFL and the NBA, owners of LCS teams in the leagues in North America, Europe, South Korea, China, Taiwan, and many more, have no ownership stake in the league.Riot Games owns the game and there is currently no significant sharing of revenue streams as there is in other professional sports league where member clubs profit from broadcast rights, league merchandise and sponsorship sales. Teams make most of their money off of their own individual sponsorship deals and streaming revenue. And even those deals are hard to come by for many teams since the NA LCS forces the bottom three teams in a 10-team league to play in a relegation tournament, where two teams could not only be sent down to the Challenger Series but be forced to fold with the loss of revenue following such a move. Its a chance many sponsors dont want to take and serves as the biggest reason why sponsorship and player deals are largely year-to-year arrangements instead of long-term contracts. Its an outdated model that has come under heavy criticism lately from team owners looking to grow along with the sport before being forced out due to shrinking revenues, increasing player salaries and the instability caused by a relegation system thats common abroad but foreign to North American professional sports leagues.Weve had the privilege of talking to a number of different sports leagues across a variety of topics and one of the things that we learned is there is there is no singular path or singular outcome that works for everybody, Whalen Rozelle, co-director of esports at Riot Games, told ESPN. What we were inspired by was the idea of a collective group that has shared interest in achieving victory together. We believe League of Legends as a sport can get to that point. When Riot Games kicked out Renegades and Team Impulse, as well as Team Dragon Knights of the Challenger Series in May, telling owners they had 10 days to sell the team, many within the community were outraged by the drastic action that came without much in the way of publicly divulged proof of wrongdoing. The swift rulings without the opportunity for an appeals process also gave many prospective investors pause. After having their teams receive investments from athletes such as Shaquille ONeal, Alex Rodriguez, Jimmy Rollins and Rick Fox as well as inquiries from teams such as the Miami Dolphins, the death penalties served as a black eye for a company in need of makeover. We learned theres a desire within the community for more transparency, Jarred Kennedy, director of esports and merchandise at Riot Games, told ESPN. Theres a concern with whos keeping Riot accountable. We acknowledge the need to build mechanisms so there can be more shared governance of what we do together. We think there are some things we can do with third-party arbitration in cases that are death-penalty situations. We want to reinforce the comfort level of the community that were doing things in the best interest of the sports and the fans and the players.Five years ago, Brandon Beck, co-founder of Riot Games, envisioned a future where events and production value matched that of traditional sports, and where major tournaments would be held at sold-out arenas in front of thousands of screaming fans. It seemed like a pipe dream at the time, but the truth was he didnt need five years. When the League of Legends Season 3 World Championship was held at Staples Center in Los Angeles in 2013, it sold out within an hour and had 32 million unique viewers online. That figure is higher than the number of people who tuned in to watch the BCS National Championship Game or Game 7 of the NBA Finals that year. This years world championships will once again be held at Staples Center next month, and after again selling out in a matter of minutes it became the most searched for event on StubHub, surpassing NFL and college football games.Beck also envisioned a future where there would be rivalries among storied teams with strong fan bases and legendary players known for long careers with a team, just like in traditional sports. While weve seen that in some cases, the current economic model has made it impossible for teams to think past one year as they try to not get regulated or worse, fold. The majority of contracts in the NA LCS are year-to-year, as is the shelf life for some of the lower-tier teams. Thats something that Riot Games plans to address following Thursdays announcement. The idea of a long-term partnership is a major step, Rozelle said. That allows teams to think on a longer time frame, and as we build the future that will be highly unlikely without the teams thinking on the same time frame that were thinking. You make different decisions when youre thinking in the short term and the long term. And the increased economic activity in the scene will ensure both security long term and give teams the confidence to sign players to longer term contracts.Esports and League of Legends specifically isnt where it wants to be yet. Where that is exactly is even a mystery to Riot Games executives still amazed at how far theyve come with a game they introduced to the public only seven years ago and now has over 100 million monthly players. The idea of selling out arenas and being watched by more people than the NBA Finals or Final Four was too far-fetched to even be a dream five years ago. But they know to get the next level theyre going to need some help now.Our goal is to make this as professional an enterprise as any other major sports leagues, Kennedy said. We know there are gaps and how we close those gaps is by working with the teams and players. We cant do that alone. RIO DE JANEIRO - This was not how it was supposed to end for Penny Taylor and the Australian Opals. One of the countrys greatest women basketball players had announced before the Games she would be retiring and was eyeing a golden sendoff. There were high expectations, too, for the team, after four silvers and a bronze from the past five Olympics. But in the second-half at the Carioca Arena 1, the idea of a fairytale finish for Taylor and an acceptable placing for the team were left in tatters; the lead from the first-half was, like so many of the Opals plays, turned over, and they went down 73-71 to Serbia. The Australian locker room must have been filled with anger, frustration and abject misery afterward, with many of the team leaving the court in floods of tears. Liz Cambage, the teams standout star, couldnt bear to talk to the media even after she had spent 20 post-match minutes calming down. And Taylor, 35, who was also in tears, summed up the mood. Asked if she thought she might look back in a couple of days and find consolation from a group stage in which the Opals won every match, her reply was curt. No, I doubt it, said the captain who was at her third Games and will quit as a player at the end of the season. We expect more of ourselves than this.We didnt get on top of them and we struggled with throwing away the ball. Its pretty upsetting. Everyone expects more from us. It hurts to let people down, let ourselves down. All the work that has gone into it - it is very disappointing. For a kid growing up in basketball, this is the goal, the ultimate: to represent your country, to be named one of the best basketballers in your country. It hurts not to have done [reflected] that. It didnt go the way I wanted it to.Taylor, eyeing a coaching role next, insisted the Opals had not underestimated Serbia but they will have to face up to some tough questtions nonetheless, with coach Brendan Joyce expecting his position to be reviewed.ddddddddddddAs far as the match was concerned, the key statistic was on turnovers: Australia took eight points from them, Serbia 27, and in a match as tight as this - there were 13 lead switches and they were tied 10 times -- it made all the difference.Cambage, who has carried the Opals in Brazil to a great degree, was again the top scorer with 29 but she was penalised for four personal fouls and Joyce had to keep her off the court for far too long during the match to prevent her being sent off.He has complained that his star centre has been targeted in these Games, by opponents and officials, but Rachel Jarry and two Serbians were also penalised four times each in a hard-fought contest in the quarterfinal.A win and a semifinal place, Joyce claimed, would have prevented the team being seen as flops, and both he and Taylor were confident the Opals would bounce back to their best in time for Tokyo 2020.The future is bright for this team, said Taylor. Liz is 24 and we have so many young players that are going to be there for a long time. Im going to be excited about watching them.Joyce will be, too, particularly if he is allowed to continue doing it as coach. The transition is already taking place, he claimed. The three and a half years we have already put in should have given us the chance to medal. No excuses. The work was done. This group here, realistically, eight of them should go through to Japan and usually the carry over is about six. That helps in Olympic experience. There is a lot of depth for the next Olympics - we have been developing them for three-and-a-half years. It just would have been awesome to take them to the next round. ' ' '

Sidney Crosby was playing the best hockey of his life. Now his extraordinary year is on hold and no one is sure when he will be back on the ice.Pittsburgh said Monday that its superstar center has been diagnosed with at least his third concussion just a few days before the defending Stanley Cup champion Penguins open their season.Crosby has been in dominant form, clearly they best player in hockey. He finished as a Hart Trophy finalist as league MVP, won the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP and led Team Canada to the World Cup title just a few months after winning his second Cup with the Penguins. His short- and long-term future is in doubt after another concussion, an injury that has dogged him off and on over six years.Coach Mike Sullivan told reporters that Crosby was concussed in practice Friday and that there was no timetable for his return. The diagnosis came as the Penguins prepare to raise their championship banner Thursday night before a home game against Alex Ovechkin and the Washington Capitals.Sullivan declined to reveal how the concussion happened. General manager Jim Rutherford said Crosby was held out of the preseason finale against Columbus on Saturday because he wasnt feeling well and didnt practice Monday to go through concussion testing. Our medical staff will take the appropriate measures moving forward, Sullivan said. The 29-year-old Crosby took blows to the head during the 2011 Winter Classic and in his next game that year, on Jan. 5 against the Tampa Bay Lightning. He was out until November. A hit Dec. 5 knocked him out until March, with the combined absences limiting Crosby to just 69 games over two seasons from 2010-2012. A broken jaw ended Crosbys lockout-shortened 2013 season.Crosby has 338 goals and 600 assists in 707 NHL games. Four months ago, he led the Penguins to the fourth Cup in franchise history after piling up 85 points in 80 games.Hes obviously an important player for us, Sullivan said. Were fortunate that we have the depth that we have. We believe we have capable people that can help this team win, and thats how well approach it.Concussions have been a thorny issue for the NHL in recent years, as they have for the NFL and other sports. The league stiffened penalties for hits to the head in hopes of reducing injuries, but more than 100 former players have sued the NHL and alleged it had the resources to better prevent head trauma, failed to properly warn players of such risks and promoted violent play that led to their injuries. The NHL upgraded its concussion policies for the upcoming season, giving spotters authority to remove players from the game if there are visible symptoms. That would not have helped Crosby in this situation.Without Crosby, the Penguins will lean on center Evgeni Malkin and winger Phil Kessel to make up for the loss in production. Sullivan isnt concerned about his captains injury causing a leadership void.Asked if its possible that Crosbys concussion isnt that bad, Sullivan said yes. He said Crosby was not discouraged or frustrated by the news.It is what it is, Sullivan said. Injuries are part of our game. Part of the challenge is for us to try to help Sid get healthy as quickly as possible, and thats what were going to do. We dont look at it any other way. Sam Mitchell felt like he was at a wedding - his family and friends on one side of the room, with Trent Cotchins invited guests on the other. It was a curious observation about Tuesdays unprecedented AFL function, but far from the weirdest comment to come out of the Essendon supplements debacle. That long-running saga had closure at the simple lunchtime ceremony, where Cotchin and Mitchell were retrospectively awarded their 2012 Brownlow Medals. In front of about 150 family, friends, AFL figures and media, two of the modern games best midfielders were presented with their first Brownlows.Richmonds 1971 Brownlow medallist Ian Stewart hung the medal around Cotchins neck and Shane Crawford, the last Hawthorn winner in 1999, did the honours for Mitchell.Cotchin and Mitchell had finished four votes behind Essendon captain Jobe Watson in the 2012 count. But once Watson became one of 34 Essendon players, banned for doping offences stemming from the supplements scandal, the pressure mounted for the popular winner to be stripped of his Brownlow.Watson pre-empted an AFL Commission decision last month when he announced he would give up his medal, adding he had mixed feelings. The dramatic circumstances heightened the emotion that always surrounds a Brownlow win.Cotchin and Mitchell had their families in the front row and repeatedly referred to them in their acceptance speeches. While worthy winners, Watson was the elephant in the room.Asked about Watson, Mitchells Im going to leave that reply made it clear it was the one topic he would not discuss at his Brownlow presentation.Cotchiin was similarly reticent, but said he had contacted the Bombers star.ddddddddddddObviously, theres a lot of emotion involved with that as well, Cotchin said of the circumstances behind their Brownlows. You feel for people and its been going on for so long but, hopefully, we can all take a step forward now.Ive tried to be really humble in the whole thing and, obviously, the decisions have been out of our hands. We just went with the flow. But the overriding emotions for Cotchin and Mitchell at Tuesdays ceremony were pride and gratitude.Cotchin celebrated his medal with wife Brooke and their two young daughters Harper and Mackenzie.Similarly, Mitchell flew his family over from Perth, where he is now at West Coast after his stunning trade deal at the end of this season. His wife Lyndall sat with their son Smith and twin daughters Emmerson and Scarlett. You dream about a lot of things when youre a kid, but you wouldnt even dream of this, Mitchell said. While Mitchell admitted he would not have knocked back winning a Brownlow the traditional way,Tuesdays intimate function was perfect.Youre bringing joy to all the people closest to you, in a way, that you would very rarely get to do.Its a beautiful way to do it.Cotchin enjoyed Mitchells wedding analogy and had a retort for his fellow Brownlow medallists suggestion about who was who in the marriage. He suggested I was the bride - hes older and shorter, so I suppose I will go with that, Cotchin joked. STORRS, Conn. -- Wagner won a regular-season conference title and a game in the NIT last spring. The Seahawks say none of that compares to beating No. 18 UConn.Mike Aaman and Romone Saunders?each scored 15 points to lead the Seahawks to a 67-58 victory over the Huskies in the season opener for both teams Friday night. This is one of the biggest wins in history, said Aaman, a 6-foot-8 senior who had nine rebounds. The win in the NIT was big, but this was against a ranked team to start out our season, so it was a very big win for us.Corey Henson added 10 points for Wagner, which beat a ranked team for just the second time in program history (Pittsburgh in 2011). Wagner also handed the Huskies their first loss in an opening game on campus. UConn came in 27-0 in such contests.Transfer Terry Larrier scored 19 points and freshman Alterique Gilbert added 14 to lead the Huskies.UConn trailed by three points at halftime and went more than five minutes without a basket to open the second half before Jalen Adams tip-in made it 41-37.Wagner scored the next eight, pushing the lead to 49-37 on a 3-pointer by Saunders. But Saunders landed awkwardly after making a pass under the basket a short time later, and he had to be helped to the bench. He didnt return, and UConn turned up the defensive pressure. The Huskies went on a 12-0 run to tie the game, holding Wagner without a point for almost seven minutes. But Wagner responded, outscoring the Huskies 18-9 from there. Hensons 3-pointer with just more than three minutes to play started a 7-0 run that put the game out of reach. That was a monumental play that just gave us confidence to finish, he said.Wagner, which doesnt have a player taller than 6-8, outrebounded UConn 37-33. Wagners defense held the Huskies to just five second-half field goals.I just think it was a lack of intensity, lack of effort on our part, said Larrier, who was playing his first game since transferring from VCU before last season. We gave those guys confidence early on, and a team like that, theyre dangerous.BIG PICTUREWagner: The Seahawks never looked rattled or intimidated by UConn. Wagner has eight returning players from a team that won the Northeast Conference regular-season title and upset St. Bonaventure in the first round of the NIT.UConn: The Huskies shot just 35.7 percent from the field, 26.7 percent in the second half. UConn allowed nine 3-pointers and had trouble on the defensive switches, leaving the experienced Seahawks with open jumpers.POLL IMPLICATIONSUConn likely will fall out of the AP Top 25. The Huskies wont have a chance to impress voters until they face Oklahoma State in Hawaii on Nov. 21.NERVOUS PURVIS?UConn senior guard Rodney Purvis had just five points and no assists. He and sophomore Jalen Adams (nine points, five assists) were a combined 6-of-22 from the field. Weve got to get better, UConn coach Kevin Ollie said. We cant have our two top guards going 6-for-22, cause I count on those guys. Both of them cant have a bad night.EARLY SIGNINGSUConn signed a guard and two forwards to national letters of intent Thursday. Makai Ashton-Langford is a highly regarded 6-2 point guard from Worcester, Massachusetts. He played AAU basketball with Jalen Adams. Tyler Polley is the 6-8 son of former NFL linebacker Tommy Polley, and 6-9 Josh Carlton is a 230-pound inside presence who plays at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland.UP NEXTWagner: The Seahawks head to Massachusetts for a game Monday against UMass-Lowell. Their home opener comes Nov. 19 against Fairfield.UConn: The Huskies have another home game Monday against Northeastern before heading west. The Huskies will play in Ollies hometown of Los Angeles on Nov. 17 before heading to Hawaii and the Maui Jim Maui Invitational. Jesse Lingard Manchester United Jersey . TOKYO -- The Japanese government approved a 150 billion yen ($1.5 billion) contract Friday to build a new main stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, a project that has been delayed by more than a year.Officials said the stadium construction would begin in December after an earlier plan was scrapped because of spiraling costs and an unpopular design. The Japan Sport Council, a government-funded organization operating the project, said the stadium was scheduled for completion at the end of November 2019, still five months behind schedule. The delay forced a venue change for the Rugby World Cup that Japan is also hosting in 2019.The cost of an earlier design by the late Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid had risen to 265 billion yen ($2.65 billion), more than twice the initial forecast. The 150 billion ($1.5 billion) contract is just below the 155 billion ($1.55 billion) ceiling set this time for the contractors, a joint venture among Taisei Corp., Azusa Sekkei Co. and the office of Kengo Kuma, an architect who designed the new stadium.Olympic minister Tamayo Marukawa told reporters she would ensure steady progress of the construction.Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike said she would closely monitor the expensive project that thhe city is also part-funding.ddddddddddddFor the burden we have to share, I will ensure its utilized for the people of Tokyo, and raise my voice when necessary, she said.A sports ministry panel is discussing how best the stadium can be used after the Tokyo Games. The stadium delay is part of Japans troubled preparations for the Olympics, underscoring a widespread lack of cost-control. The Japanese organizers have also faced a bribery scandal. They are now also bracing for a possible delay in the construction of roads linking the main Olympic venues near a new fish market project, which has been hit by a construction scandal and tainted underground water. The Tokyo metropolitan government is currently reviewing the ballooning cost because of concern about its financial burden and the impact on Tokyo taxpayers. The city-appointed panel of outside experts warned in a report Thursday that the total cost could exceed 3 trillion yen ($30 billion) without a drastic cost-cutting effort, and suggested using existing facilities instead of building new ones that could likely end up as white elephants. Hampshire 548 for 6 dec (Smith 210, McLaren 81*) drew with Lancashire 387 (Petersen 98, Hameed 89, Procter 54, Dawson 3-63, Crane 3-87) and 98 for 3Scorecard Hampshires Liam Dawson bagged three evening wickets but could not stop Lancashire, led by a fifty from Haseeb Hameed, from batting out for a draw at the Ageas Bowl.Left arm spinner Dawson gave Hampshire hope of the win but Hameed and Liam Livingstone saw the visitors to the end.Hampshire remain cemented to the bottom of Division One, while Lancashire are in danger of being dragged in to a relegation dogfight with Surrey threatening to overtake them.Hampshire were given some early hope of clutching a victory from the off, as leg spinner Mason Crane found exaggerated turn.He took three of the six final Lancastrian first innings wickets with another tireless day twirling - bowling 48 and a half overs in the match. Will Smith, Hampshires captain, said: In terms of the effort and desire to win was all we could ask. We probably created enough chances but that said you cant fault the effort, we have fielded for 210 overs in a row.Daws and Mason bowled 100 overs of them and bowled particularly well. We couldnt force the win but there are a lot of positives. At times the pitch appeared docile but all of a sudden it would come to life. It was a wicket which suited us.Every game is important now. We have to approach the next five with a winning mentality. If we can come out with two wins we can climb the table.Crane had night-watchman Simon Kerrigan caught behind to the last ball of the days first over and later found a thick edge from Jordan Clark drop to Ryan McLaren at second slip.In the afternoon he wrapped up the first innings by tempting Croft out his crease, stumped by the increasingly impressive Lewis McManus.Ryan McLaren sent Liam Livingstones off stump cartwheeling before Cranes spin twin Dawson grabbed tail scalps of Tom Moores and Kyle Jarvis. With Lancashire 12 short of the follow on, Will Smith forced them to bat again and were left frustrated by openers Steven Croft and Hameed. The pair retreated deeply within their shells - dot ball followed dot ball, as they used up 25 of the 58 remaining overs.Dawson managed to get one top pop up with the first ball after tea, and Croft watched sullenly as it dropped into Gareth Andrews paws at silly point - Dawsons 100th Specsavers County Championship wicket. Dawson managed to grab his fifth and sixth wickets of the afternoon - after only managing nine previously this season - soon after, as Lancashire threatened briefly to offer Hampshire a glimpse of winning the game.Luke Procter pushed to Tom Alsop at silly mid-on, before Alviro Petersen fell in an identical fashion six overs later. The stat that summed up the match, on a flat track, was the number of maidens bowled - over a full days worth of 98.But Hameed, unbeaten on 53 after his 142-ball half century, his second of the match, and Livingstone dropped anchor to avoid defeat - the captains eventually shaking hands with six left, the visitors still trailing by 63. Ryan Kesler Jersey . He was followed closely by David Clarkson, donning red, seconds later. Uniteds eighth defeat of a wretched campaign means Liverpool, which currently occupies the fourth and final Champions League place, could go nine points clear of its fierce rival by beating West Bromwich Albion on Sunday. Charlie Adam scored both of Stokes goals at Britannia Stadium either side of Robin van Persies equalizer, with a miserable day for seventh-place United capped by first-half injuries to centre halves Jonny Evans and Phil Jones that forced them off. Teemu Selanne Jersey .Y. -- Bills receiver Stevie Johnson has a bone to pick with the NFL schedule maker. Brisbane have eased the pressure on coach Justin Leppitsch and likely consigned Essendon to the AFL wooden spoon with a 37-point win at Etihad Stadium. The Lions ended their club-record losing streak of 12 games with Sundays 20.8 (128) to 12.19 (91) win over the Bombers. It was Brisbanes second win this season and leaves them a game clear of last-placed Essendon with five rounds left. There had been plenty of speculation about what losing this match might mean for Leppitschs future as Lions coach. But the Lions set the agenda from the start, kicking the opening three goals.Daniel Rich had his best game of the season off half-back, captain Tom Rockliff was outstanding through the midfield and Mitch Robinson shut out Essendon playmaker David Zaharakis. Not surprisingly, given the two teams only had one win apiece from 18 matches, it was not the greatest of spectacles. But whenever Essendon challenged, Brisbane had an answer.Poor goalkicking again killed any chance the Bombers had of coming back. They kicked an abyysmal 3.dddddddddddd10 after halftime and ended the game with three more scoring shots.Essendon only trailed by 13 points at the main break and it was instructive that at three-quarter time, they had the same number of scoring shots as Brisbane. But Liam Dawson kicked a goal on the siren to give the Lions a 40-point lead, eliminating any doubt about their win.Two goals in as many minutes at the start of the last quarter was the icing on the cake for Brisbane, who last won in round four.It was a dirty day for Essendon, who had come into the match as favourites for the first time this season. One notable positive was a fine AFL debut from defender Aaron Francis, their second pick at No.6 in last years national draft.Injury had delayed the start of his senior career and he immediately showed why the Bombers are so excited about his potential, taking some excellent intercept marks. Butch Harmon believes mental mistakes costs Jordan Spieths title defence at the Masters, but fully expects him to claim more major titles. Last years champion topped the leaderboard after each of the first three rounds at Augusta and held a five-shot advantage during the final round before a dramatic meltdown on the back nine. After reaching the turn off the back of a run of four consecutive birdies, Spieth bogeyed the 10th and 11th before finding the water twice on his way to a quadruple-bogey at the 12th. That spell handed the advantage to Danny Willett, who fired a bogey-free 67 to claim victory, while Spieth was left to rue his run of errors after the turn. Spieth saw his five-shot lead disappear in the space of three holes The swing was a physical mistake, but where Spieth was aiming the ball was the problem, Harmon told Sky Sports. At the 10th he missed his drive to the right, missed the green to the right in the bunker and then couldnt get aggressive with the bunker shot and made a bogey. He had a good chance to make a par at 11 and didnt, which was the type of putt he had been making all week long. He had been the bounceback man all week. What happened at 12 though nobody could have predicted. It wasnt even close to making it and then his third shot almost came up short of the water - thats how bad it was. Jordan Spieth reflected on his final round meltdown at Augusta Its easy to say now, but he made mental mistakes and should have played the ball at 12 over towards the bunker. He said himself that had he gone for the bunker instead of the flag he would have still had the lead. Thats just golf and thats the way it happens.Spieth closed the week alongside Lee Westwood in a tie for second, with the result his third consecutive top-two Masters finish and his fifth consecutive major top-five. Spieth twice had to take a drop at Augustas 12th Although Harmon fears it may take Spieth time to recover from his nightmare finish to the opening major of the year, he has no doubt the 22-year-old will make a return to the winners circle. He is a young player and is a true champion, theres no doubt about that, Harmon told Sky Sports. He has already proven that, as we have watched him win major championships and watched him win the Masters last year.Hes going to win this again in the future. He had this tournament, theres no doubt about that and he knows it, so thats whats going to be hard for him to live.
