It may seem like the Canadian mens volleyball team is just another overnight success after a recent upset over powerhouse Russia. In fact, its a success story seven years in the making. And the man who built the foundation is coach Glenn Hoag, who has guided the team since 2006. Volleyball isnt a sport that gets a lot of attention in Canada, although that may change if the national team keeps developing and winning more. But University of Winnipeg volleyball coach Larry McKay says outside of Canada, people know who Glenn Hoag is and they respect him. The national volleyball training centre was based in Winnipeg until it moved to Gatineau in 2009. "In Europe, they think hes one of the best coaches in the world," says McKay, who adds that its a sentiment Hoags players share. "Hes a guy thats incredibly passionate about what hes doing," says attacker Justin Duff of Winnipeg. On the team four years, he also played for Hoag when he coached professionally in Turkey. "Ive not seen a lot of people that care as much about their job and what theyre doing as he does." A key to Hoags plan to revitalize the national team was re-establishing the national training centre, after a decade when university players moved directly to international play. Duff says that alone is huge. It gives Canadas players the training they need to cope with teams from countries where you can turn pro at 17 or 18 and play full-time. "The full-time centre helps us catch up. It gives us a full year of training physically and with basic skills of volleyball and advance tactics." Duff points to Rudy Verhoeff. The Calgary native had just finished university and never played pro, yet he was a huge contributor to their recent success in the World League thanks to the national centre. But the rest of the story comes from what Hoag learned through years playing and coaching professionally in Europe -- the way to succeed is basically to sweat the details. "Establish systems and get the players to (understand) these are their references," he says. "By establishing these systems, I established a training philosophy around (them)." He knew it wouldnt create a winner overnight but it seems to be paying off now. The teams latest triumph is their win over Russia at the recent World League final tournament in Mar del Plata, Argentina. The win helped boost Canada seven spots to 11th in the world rankings, with Russia still at No. 2, behind Brazil. Although Canada ended up losing to Brazil (and Russia bounced back to win the title), 2013 saw Canadas best performance ever in World League play with a record of 9-3, the latest sign a program that languished for a decade is picking up steam. "What Ive been able to do is trap some teams because they think theyre so good," Hoag says of his upstart Canadians. "Well do it with patience. Well do it with the qualities we want to develop." Not that winning is the only measure of success. Its probably not even high on Hoags list (although he admits it is very nice). He says hes been able to see progress in other ways as the team develops. "Are they better receivers, better attackers? Is the group performing better in certain areas?" he says. "Winning is really important and we all like to do it but, if you dont develop the means to win." Hoag has spent most of his life playing or coaching volleyball. As a player, hes already been inducted into the Quebec Volleyball Hall of Fame. He played on the national team from 1981 to 1986 and on the 1984 Olympic team that finished fourth (Canadas best to date). He helped Canada win silver at the 2003 World University Games and gold at the 1984 Commonwealth volleyball championships. He played professionally in Europe between 1984 and 1993 and coached Paris Volley to a Triple Crown victory, winning the French Cup, the French Championship and the European Champions Cup. "Europe is the Mecca of volleyball internationally." When he returned to Canada he also returned to coaching at Sherbrooke University, where hed worked in the 90s, before taking the reins of the national team. But Europe was his graduate school. "I got to learn a lot," he says. The centre and more training is important. But its also important that his players believe they can be winners. "Weve reached a certain point in our game and now weve got to polish it a little, but our guys are not afraid to play anyone now," he says. The team has a break from competition this summer. "It was a good World League, now it becomes the past for me," says Hoag. "I evaluate and I measure and we get back in the gym in August." Their next competition is NORCECA, which covers North and Central American and the Caribbean, in Vancouver at the end of September. The Canadians will face rivals such as Cuba, Puerto Rico, Mexico and the United States. "I still have to work a lot on the skills," says the coach. Cracking the top five in the World League is great but Hoag says they arent letting it go to their heads as they prepare for the world championships next year and hopefully the Olympics in 2016. The Canadian men havent qualified for the Summer Games since 1992. "Im happy that we grew but I dont pay attention to the world ranking too much. . . We can beat some teams that are ahead of us and we can also lose to teams that are behind. "And its because volleyball is so competitive worldwide." To keep moving forward, middle blocker Adam Simac says the team has to eliminate inconsistencies and the kind of unforced errors they made against Brazil. Its even more important now that they arent so far under everyones radar, but that attention should also help force a little focus. "Weve kind of served notice to the world, You cant take Canada lightly any more," he said. "Every team that plays us is going to be ready for us and is going to be gunning for us. That will make our focus a little bit better and hopefully we deliver a more refined product." Kevin Faulk Patriots Jersey . Peter Gammons, an analyst for Major League Baseballs network and website, drew the ire of hockey fans on Sunday when he criticized the two NHL teams on Twitter for their physical game the night before. Our hit and miss list of the 2015 NFL Draft created plenty of debate, with some feeling we were a little unfair not to put Marcus Peters (8 INT) on the list, as well as not giving Nelson Aghlohor his due as the NFLs biggest first-round miss. Its about looking forward not back, so the View From America has his Top 10 non-first round rookies for 2015... 1) Tyler Lockett (3rd round, Seattle) Tyler Lockett logged over 1,000 yards and 2 TDs in combined punt and kick returns There wasnt a bigger playmaker for the Seahawks last season, as Lockett emerged not only as one of the nastiest receiving threats in the country (664 yards, 6 TDs), but also logging over 1,000 yards and 2 TDs in combined punt and kick returns. He was named an All-Pro in his first season. Mind you, those who know anything about college football would have raised their eyebrows that he wasnt taken earlier than the third round, too. 2) Thomas Rawls (undrafted, Seattle)Two of Pete Carrolls biggest successes from the 2015 Draft were Lockett and Rawls. Rawls - who had 830 yards, 4 TDs and led the league with 5.6 yards per rushing attempt - was sensational in picking up where Marshawn Lynch left. Theres a new beast in town, people.3) Stefon Diggs (5th round, Minnesota) Wide receiver Stefon Diggs has been quite a find for the Vikings 720 yards, 4 TDs, - including a red-hot start to the year, where he had 95+ yards in four straight games. After corners and safeties began to stop him, the production waned, but he was still a remarkable threat. He was taken in the 5th round pick, but produced more than a lot of first rounders.4) Ronald Darby (2nd round, Buffalo) Ronald Darby has starred at cornerback for the Bills Darby - who was a star at Florida State - had a heck of a year at cornerback for the Bills, with 21 passes defended (5th best in the NFL) and made 68 tackles. He had 2 interceptions (2nd on the team), too. The worrying thing for opposition quarterbacks is that hell only get better. Darby Island, anybody? 2015 Draft: Hits & Misses Who were 2015s draft success stories 5) Lael Collins (undrafted, Dallas)Listen, we know why he wasnt drafted [there was a shooting in New Orleans for which he was not a suspect but he was questioned by police on the eve of the draft], and when Jerry Jones finally took him on, Collins - who was expected to be a first rounder - started 11 games for Dallas at offensive tackle, and looks an easy part of the best offensive line in the NFL.6) Devin Funchess (2nd round, Carolina) Cam Newwton celebrates a TD with Devin Funchess A lot of people used the words overweight to describe the receiver, and looked at the NFL Combine as a reason why the former Michigan man was not a first rounder.dddddddddddd But Carolina knew that he had first round hands, and 473 yards - the fifth best for a rookie in the history of the Panthers - and 5 TDs later, he became one of Cam Newtons prime receivers en route to a Super Bowl.7) Haouli Kikaha (2nd round, New Orleans) Hauoli Kikaha of the New Orleans Saints put up some great numbers in his rookie season We nearly put in Malcolm Brown, the Patriots nose tackle out of Alabama, but looking at it, Kikaha was pretty immense - especially considering the terrible defence he had to play with week in, week out. The defensive ends numbers - 52 tackles, 4 sacks and 4 forced fumbles - were great. His forced fumbles number ranked amongst the best in the league.8) Landon Collins (2nd round, New York Giants)The first pick of the 2nd round was blistering in his hard-hitting tackling….exactly what he was like at Alabama. Collins had 80 tackles and started all 16 games for the New York Giants who - on reflection - werent that far away from making a play-off game. Mind you, thats how bad the NFC East was! Making sense of the Combine What is the NFL Combine all about? 9) T.J. Yeldon (2nd round, Jacksonville Jaguars) We remember how good Yeldon was at Alabama, and we were hoping for the same in Jacksonville, where he was drafted. He was quick, elusive and scary fast playing against some of the best defences in the country in the SEC, but the NFL guys obviously didnt think he was as good as a Todd Gurley and, er, Melvin Gordon. Yeldon immediately became the Jags starting running back, and put up 742 yards with 2 TDs. With a better offensive line, we think he could have run for 1,000.10) Jamison Crowder (4th round, Washington) - 600 yards, 2 TDs Anyone who plays for Dukes football team isnt exactly going to be the biggest name on the draft, so it was hardly surprising that Crowder was picked in the latter rounds. But to say he proved himself was an understatement, as he grabbed 600 yards receiving and 2 TDs on 59 receptions. Certain teams in the NFC East would have loved a rookie with those stats.Purposely left out: Kwon Alexander (2nd round, Tampa Bay Buccaneers) Lets not get it wrong: Alexanders 93 tackles, three sacks and two interceptions were exceptionally impressive. He was on track for over 100 tackles and maybe more sacks and interceptions, until he was handed a four-game suspension for using performance enhancing drugs. Alexander was suspended for the last three games of the season and will be out for the 2017 season opener. And you might say that his actions cost the team a wild card place, too (The Bucs finished 0-3 in his absence). Anyway, lets hope he learns, because hes one talented kid. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Seattle Mariners manager Scott Servais felt like he was watching replays of a bad movie over and over in the first three innings.Seattles leadoff batter walked each time but the Mariners hit into three consecutive double plays, killing any chance they had of getting to Oakland Athletics starter Sean Manaea early. It added up to a frustrating night all around for Servais ball club.Yonder Alonso hit a tiebreaking two-run single in the sixth inning off rookie starter Joe Wieland and Oakland beat Seattle 6-3 on Friday night to end the Mariners six-game winning streak. We didnt do a whole lot offensively, Servais said after his club was held to four hits. It was like Groundhog Day: double play, double play, double play the first three innings. The missed opportunities were pivotal after the Mariners fought back from a 3-0 deficit to tie it when Kyle Seager homered in the fifth and Shawn OMalley tripled and scored in the sixth. That was the extent of Seattles offense on a night when Wieland got knocked around in his Mariners debut.Wieland (0-1), acquired from the Dodgers in the offseason, allowed six runs and nine hits with three strikeouts after being called up from Triple-A Tacoma earlier in the day. There were some nerves, Wieland said. The first couple of pitches I was trying to get settled in. After that, it was just another start.Khris Davis hit his career-high 28th home run of the season for Oakland, Marcus Semien matched his career-high with four hits and Stephen Vogt had an RBI double and scored twice to help the As to their fourth win in five games.Manaea fought early command issues and allowed three runs over six innings for his first win since June 29. Manaea (4-7) gave up three hits, walked three and struck out four. Its not often that weve seen his command look a little off, As manager Bob Melvin said. That was one of the reasons I took him out when I did. But he battled. These are the type of learning experiences for young pitchers that are actually good for them.Seattle had won seven straight at the Coliseum, including a three-game sweep in May, before going cold offensively in its return.Oakland broke the game open in the sixth with five consecutive singles, including Alonsos tiebreaker.Alonso, who also singled in the eighth, is hitting .361 over his last 11 games.Davis, the only batter on Oaklands roster who had faced Wieland, hit a two-run homer in the first to put the As up 3-0. Vogt doubled in Semien earlier in the inning.TRAINERS ROOMMariners: Steve Cishek (torn left hip labrum) is expected to begin a rehab assignment soon but Servais said Cishek wont be coming back as the teams closer when he returns to the big league club. Edwin Diaz, who has converted all five save opportunities since taking over as closer, will remain in that role. ... James Paxton, who was hit in the elbow by a line drive Aug. 7, is still sore but Servais is hopeful to have the lefty back in the rotation early next week. ... OF Daniel Robertson was designated for assignment.Athletics: Sean Doolittle threw off a mound and faced hitters, an encouraging sign for the teams former closer who has been on the DL with a strained left elbow since June 26. ... RHP Jesse Hahn (strained right shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Saturday. ... Patrick Schuster was claimed off waivers by Philadelphia. Schuster was designated for assignment on Wednesday.UP NEXTMariners: RHP Hisashi Iwakuma (13-7) makes his 13th career start against the As on Saturday night. Iwakuma has 12 wins over his last 15 starts.Athletics: RHP Kendall Graveman (8-7) will face Seattle for the third time this season. Graveman is 7-1 over his past 13 starts. Coach Kenny Lowe has played down Perths dramatic three-goal capitulation to Central Coast as magnificent entertainment, but expects his A-League teams errors not to be repeated against Wellington on Sunday.Glory were handed a timely opening-round wake-up call when the battling Mariners fought back from 3-0 to draw 3-3 last weekend.Lowes men were left to rue an own goal, a conceded penalty and a series of missed chances in the second half as their initially comfortable defence was left exposed. But while his players were hurting, their coach wasnt overly fazed.I wouldnt even class it as a wake-up call, Lowe said. The first 45 minutes was some of the best football Ive ever seen from the team, so as far as Im concerned I look at the positives.Im a glass half full not a glass half empty man.At the end of the day it was magnificent entertainment.Lowe indicated hed keep faith with his back four, but admitted the conceded goals were poor and there was no room for the same mistakes against a strengthened Phoenix.Ernie Merricks side make the long-haul trip to nib Stadium boosted by five returning All Whites, all sorely missed in their opening 1-0 loss to Melbourne City.In particular, skipper Andrew Durante will shore up central defence while Kosta Barbarouses could prove the difference up front. They played one of the best teams last week and could have got something out of that, Lowe said.Theyre going to be no pushovers, theyll be well-organised and well-coached by Ernie.Does the long flight and everything affect the All Whites? Michigan might drop because of a lackluster passing game under John OKorn, and Oklahoma still has some work to do. Heres an updated projection of what the committee might do:1. Alabama2. Ohio State3. Clemson4. Michigan5. Washington6. WisconsinSooners still have work to doThe easiest declaration in the Big 12 is that West Virginia is out, done, kaput. Its more complicated with Oklahoma, which earned its first statement win -- and got it in Morgantown. The Sooners still need help, though -- lots of it -- because of a résumé that has just one win against a top 25 team and just three wins against teams with record above .500 (Kansas State, Baylor and now West Virginia). Five of OUs nine wins have come against teams with at least six losses. So what has to happen?OU first needs to beat Oklahoma State on Dec. 3. The Sooners would increase their legitimacy in the debate if Michigan loses, because if the Wolverines win out and win the Big Ten, youre looking at a top four that starts with Alabama, Clemson and Michigan. The debate would then boil down to Oklahoma and Washington. Thats why if Washington loses, it also helps, because Oklahoma might have a better chance when evaluated against a two-loss Colorado Pac-12 champ. Oklahoma could also make a case against a two-loss Penn State team, but would likely lose that résumé test, too, because Penn States win over No. 2 Ohio State still trumps anything the Sooners have done. OU isnt done yet, but it remains a long shot in the big picture.Pac-12 takes playoff hitThe entire Pac-12 took a hit when both No. 12 Utah and No. 22 Washington State lost. Utahs loss hurts Washingtons résumé, as a road win against Utah is the Huskies best win. With Washington States loss, its possible the Cougars drop out of the CFP top 25 entirely. Thats not good for Washington, which needs as many ranked opponents as it can get down the stretch. In spite of the loss to Colorado, Washington State can win the North if it wins the Apple Cup. That would leave Colorado as the leagues best shot at the CFP, but it would be playing a team it already beat in the conference championship game. The better scenario for Colorado is for Washington to win the North.Michigan wins OKorns debut, but tougher challenge awaitsThis was the selection committees first chance to see if Michigan looks like a top-four team with backup quarterback John OKorn, and in spite of the win over Indiana, that remains debatable. Michigans passing game struggled immensely, as OKorn completed just seven of 16 passes for 59 yards, and the Wolverines put the game in the hands of DeVeon Smith, who had 158 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan cant remain one-dimensional at Ohio State next week or in the Big Ten championship game, should it win the East. That is enough to give the committee pause, and it could drop Michigan to the No. 4 spot behind Clemson this week. The Wolverines should stay in the top four, however, thanks to wins ovver Colorado, Penn State and Wisconsin.ddddddddddddOhio State should remain ranked ahead of Michigan, partly because the Buckeyes have a better loss (to a ranked Penn State team) than the Wolverines loss to Iowa. It should be noted in the committee meeting room, though, that Michigan and Ohio State both played in East Lansing, and the Wolverines won in more impressive fashion.Ohio State wobbles but keeps playoff hopes aliveNo. 2 Ohio State escaped East Lansing with a 17-16 win and should remain in the committees top four, but such a close game against a 3-7 team opens the door to debate whether the Buckeyes are the No. 2 team in the country. The close win also calls into question whether the Buckeyes would deserve to stay in the top four without winning the Big Ten East division. Remember, in order for a team that doesnt win its conference championship to go to a semifinal, it must unequivocally be one of the four best teams in the country. There must be no doubt among the 12 committee members that Ohio State is better than another Power 5 conference champion. For much of the game Saturday, there was doubt as to whether the Buckeyes are better than Michigan State. Also in the Big Ten, Wisconsin trounced Purdue 49-20 but needed Nebraska (and Minnesota) to lose to clinch the Big Tens West division. The Huskers thoroughly beat the Terps, so the Badgers celebration must remain on hold, though they should remain the Big Tens top two-loss team.Gundy states his case for Oklahoma StateThe No. 11 Cowboys beat TCU 31-6 to improve to 9-2 and set up a potentially monumental Bedlam showdown with Oklahoma on Dec. 3. But coach Mike Gundy isnt looking at his team as a 9-2 squad. To him, its 10-1.After the TCU win, Gundy reflected on his teams?controversial Week 2 loss to Central Michigan, in which on-field and replay officials admitted to an error that prolonged the game and allowed the Chippewas to complete a last-second Hail Mary.Nobody will ever convince me that we didnt get the win, Gundy said.CFP selection committee chair Kirby Hocutt has said his group is considering the game a loss for the Cowboys, but Gundy isnt sure they feel that way.I know Kirby had mentioned that the committee feels a certain way about that game, Gundy said. I think Kirbys playing poker and that they see us as a 10-win team. Thats just my opinion.Playoff impact gamesNo. 2 Ohio State 17, Michigan State 16No. 7 Wisconsin 49, Purdue 20No. 11 Oklahoma State 31, TCU 6No. 3 Michigan 20, Indiana 10No. 4 Clemson 35, Wake Forest 13No. 1 Alabama 31, Chattanooga 3No. 8 Penn State 39, Rutgers 0No. 9 Oklahoma 56, No. 14 West Virginia 28What Louisvilles loss meansAfter a wild Saturday filled with upsets, the ripple effect in the College Football Playoff continued Thursday, when No. 5 Louisville was thoroughly outplayed by Houston in a 36-10 loss that sent reverberations throughout the selection committees Top 25. Legendary F1 team boss Sir Frank Wiliams is suffering from pneumonia in hospital, though his team says he is making a slow, steady recovery. The 74-year-old was taken ill during the Italian Grand Prix weekend in September and has not been in the paddock since. He is recovering at home in England with daughter and deputy team boss Claire Williams, who has been in charge of the day-to-day running of the Williams team since 2013.Chief executive Mike ODriscoll took Claire Williams place in the Friday team principals press conference in Mexico, where he updated F1 media about the situation.[Sir Frank] has been a fixture in the paddock for so many years its strange not to have him with us, he said. Hes had a tough time in hospital, hes making a recovery, a slow, steady recovery. SAN ANTONIO -- Tony Parker made good on his pledge before Game 4 of the NBA Finals: He was ready to go. He just didnt have it in him to finish. What began as a spectacular, told-you-so performance from the All-Star point guard ended with a scoreless second half and second-guessing about his strained right hamstring, which Parker said gradually sapped his strength as the San Antonio Spurs lost to the resurgent Miami Heat 109-93 on Thursday night. Parker, who repeatedly declared "Ill be ready to go" to questions about his health before Game 4, said afterward he "definitely got fatigued" in the second half. Thats when Parker took only four shots and made none. It was an abrupt reversal after a brilliant first half, when Parker looked like the NBAs best point guard -- just as he did at the start of the series. By the end, he settled for 15 points and nine assists in Game 4. "It was kind of weak. I didnt know what to expect," Parker said. "So the first three, four minutes I was kind of testing it, and the first half it felt OK. And the second half I think I got fatigued a little bit." Then he threw in a silver lining. "Overall Im just happy I didnt make it worse," he said. The series is tied 2-all heading into the final home game for San Antonio on Sunday night. Parker said hell be OK to play after packing the next two off days with treatment, but the Spurs might need him to be spectacular again to win a fifth championship. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said health wasnt Parkers problem. "Miami did a great job on him," Popovich said. "They doubled. They got it out of his hands and other people had to play." Parker shot 7 of 16 and reached the foul line just three times. It was a sudden disappearing act after scoring or assisting on 12 of San Antonios first 16 field goals. Despite the lingering problems from his hamstring, Parker didnt make it obvious. He played 31 minutes and well into the fourth quarter before the Spurs emptied their bench as the Heat pulled away. Parker was hurt in the second half of Game 3, and an MRI taken Wednesday revealed a Grade 1 strain. Thats the mildest level, but Parker wouldnt commit to playing Thursday night until the morning shootaround. The way he started the game, it appeared all the concern about his hamstring was silly. He shot 58 per cent in the first half, and had already outscored his listless performances in Games 2 and 3. Miami stars LeBron James and Dwyane Wade had rebounded, too, making this series a thrilling matchup of dueling superstars again. But while James and Wade kept bulldozing the Spurs in the second half, Parker couldnt keep up. "They are doing the same thing on me since the beginning," Parker said of the Heat. "Very aggressive on pick-and-rolls, stuff like that. I missed easy shots, and hopefully Ill get more healthy and better by Sunday." Parker didnt have his supporting cast in the backcourt to bail him out this time, either. Danny Green and Gary Neal, who lit up the Heat in a Game 3 blowout, combined for 23 points -- less than half their output the last time out. One big reason: Miami didnt let the Spurs have their way from 3-point range again. Whereas Neal and Green combined to make 13 of San Antonios Finals-record 16 shots from behind the arc in Game 3, the Spurs totalled only 16 tries from long range as an encore. That was half the number of 3s that San Antonio launched Tuesday night. Green said he expected the Heat to chase them more aggressively off the 3-point line this time. Spurs forward Tim Duncan also gave the Heat credit -- for doing as much to limit Parker as his injury. "Hes played with injuries all year long, minor injuries all year long, and I had no doubt that he would be there and be ready to play," Duncan said. "And he played well. As I said, give credit to Miami in the second half." Clement Lenglet Barcelona Jersey . But a blanket ban is not a sure thing. The decision to deliver one is rife with political ramifications that involve a country that sent the third-most athletes (more than 430) to the previous Summer Olympics, four years ago in London. It puts the IOC in the position of ruling against one of its biggest supporters, a nation that spent more than $50 billion hosting the Winter Games in Sochi just two years ago.IOC president Thomas Bach said the committee wouldnt hesitate to apply the toughest sanctions available. Whether the IOC issues its decision on Tuesday or simply sets the table for it to come later, it could be appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. ' ' '

Trevor Knight doesnt exactly claim that divine intervention brought him to College Station, Texas, but the phrase he has used to describe his move has been a leap of faith. If Knight, who spent the past four years at Oklahoma, was going to leave Norman, it had to be for the perfect situation. Conversely, Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin needed the perfect quarterback to take over a position rocked by transfers and baggage over the past couple of years. There was Knight, searching for a new home with one last year of eligibility left. More than 350 miles away, Sumlin, his program dragging and two starting quarterbacks departing almost simultaneously, was searching for a way to get A&M back on track as his seat heats up.After a few phone calls and some help from an old friend, Sumlin found his guy, and Knight found his perfect situation. We filled a void for him ... and he filled a void for us as a guy who was not just a graduate transfer quarterback, but a guy you would actually want as a quarterback and played in big games and then brought in a maturity level, Sumlin said. Its a good fit for us.Good must turn into great, as both Sumlin and Knight need this relationship to flourish. If Knight wants a storybook ending to his college career, hell have to show a more polished, less risky side. If Sumlin wants to keep coaching the Aggies, hell need Knight to carry an offense with a new coordinator and a team that has underachieved since its meteoric rise in its 2012 SEC debut.I will say right now, its a fresh start, Knight said. Ive got more confidence than Ive ever had in my game just being in a new conference, a new place, new team, new offense and being named the starter again.* * *Texas A&M wasnt Knights first choice after graduation, even though he spent four months committed to the Aggies back in high school. The senior, who was a captain at Oklahoma, honestly considered staying with the Sooners. Even with former Heisman finalist Baker Mayfield in front of him, Knight was content sitting and helping. But ultimately, every quarterback wants to play. Knight said a handful of schools from the SEC, Pac-12 and even Big 12 reached out to him. Knight didnt need to be recruited again; he needed to make a business decision and find a situation that provided him the opportunity to play -- and play at a high level.Knight, a San Antonio, Texas, native, reached out to Sumlin shortly after the regular season ended. But with Kyler Murray and Kyle Allen on the roster, Sumlin thanked him and politely said he wasnt interested in another quarterback. As fate would have it, everything changed a couple of weeks later, when both Allen and Murray transferred within a week of each other, reopening communication between Knight and Sumlin. The two discussed A&Ms roster -- the lack of a proven quarterback and the playmakers around that position -- and scheme.Noel Mazzones up-tempo spread offense fit Knight, as did the chance to play immediately, with only former juco transfer Jake Hubenak in his way. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops, who was once Sumlins boss in Norman, gave both Sumlin and Knight his stamp of approval. The chance to play close to home and outside of the Big 12 pushed A&M to the top.All the stars just aligned perfectly to make A&M be the perfect place for me, Knight said. I felt like it was the perfect opportunity that I was running toward for my senior year.* * *While this is certainly a fresh start for both Sumlin and Knight -- who threw for 3,424 with 25 touchdowns and 19 interceptions and ran for another 853 yards with eight scores at Oklahoma -- high expectations and a healthy dose of pressure will be dumped on their backs. Talk of a lack of internal control has plagued Sumlin for the past few years, but Knight brings the maturity and leadership that A&M?has lacked at quarterback. Knight was known for his gunslinging ability -- both good and bad -- but his claim to fame is his gutty, 45-31 upset win over Alabama in the 2013 Sugar Bowl, during which his ability to extend plays helped him scorch Alabamas world-class defense for 348 passing yards and four touchdowns.Hes been in big games and hes won them, Sumlin said. You can count them on one hand the guys who have done it [beaten Alabama over the past three years]. Im not real smart, but thats a place to start.Knight and Ole Miss Chad Kelly are the only active quarterbacks with wins over Bama. But the gunslinger style that helped him best Bama also cost him later. In 2014, Oklahoma went 8-5, as Knight completed 56.6 percent of his passes with 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, including pick-sixes in losses to Clemson, Kansas State and TCU. Knight threw picks in eight games, with three multi-interception performances. A year later, Knight watched Mayfield direct the Sooners playoff run. Those mistakes, which he hopes are behind him, could cost both Knight and Sumlin. So theres been a lot of emphasis put on ball security and decision-making with Knight, who won the starting job after the spring. Since Johnny Manziel left in 2013, Aggies quarterbacks have combined to throw 64 touchdowns to 30 interceptions. Vanderbilt is the only other SEC team to throw at least 30 interceptions over the past two years (35).Sumlin seems more at ease with Knight, who is his first starting senior quarterback at A&M, but theres a sense it will be a week-to-week journey with these two.You know, the growth during your career can happen quicker if you understand where your shortcomings are, and there was no greater teacher than losing this opportunity at Oklahoma, Sumlin said.He has a better understanding of that now than maybe he had three years ago.* * *Knight insists the pressure is nothing. Its just noise that he has been used to since he started playing quarterback during kindergarten flag football in south Texas. Growing up idolizing high school Texas stars and then becoming one himself allowed Knight to face -- and dismiss -- negativity well before he stepped foot in Norman.Im harder on myself than media or any person behind a Twitter feed, Knight said with a laugh. That may be, but get ready for a firestorm at the first sign of trouble. Backup in the Big 12 is nothing like starter in the SEC.And it all becomes more intriguing with the crisscrossing connections that have come full circle for both parties -- from Sumlins five years at Oklahoma to Knights A&M commitment leading to his playing days with the Sooners, which in turn led to Knight becoming the Aggies starter. Its kinda funny how all that works, Knight said. It definitely could be fate. And whether he likes it or not, the fate of his coachs career is in his right hand. As Knight looks to reinvent himself, Sumlin is too. After bursting onto the SEC scene, Sumlins stock has fallen with consecutive 8-5 seasons and drama -- from players transferring to coaches misbehaving -- creating a black cloud over the program.Winning cures all, and Knight, who is aware of his coachs situation, isnt painting himself as a savior or getting caught up in out-of-the-huddle drama. Hes in College Station to play football, and the better he is at that, the less talk hell hear.If you start thinking about speculation and things like that, thats when you get caught up in things you cant get caught up in, Knight?said. Its a day-to-day process. If you focus on the process and not the end game or everything else thats going on, you most of the time arrive at the place you want to be at. John Wensink Jersey . LANDOVER, Md. -- In their first real chance to play together this preseason, Kirk Cousins and the Washington Redskins offensive starters showed plenty of rust and then progress in a 21-16 victory against the Buffalo Bills on Friday night. With the Bills (1-2) resting almost their entire starting defense, Cousins overcame a rough start to finish 12 of 23 for 188 yards, three touchdowns and an interception. Despite coming mostly against Buffalos second- and third-stringers, it was an important recovery for Cousins, who had thrown only five passes in the preseason and was rested last week. Were going to have slow moments or slow quarters at times, and the key is going to be to find a way to circle the wagons and regroup, said Cousins, who started 3 of 9. The body of work overall was pretty productive, but there were moments where it wasnt as good as it needs to be, and we know that.Undrafted rookie running back Robert Kelley was the brightest spot for Washington (2-1), especially given the previous injuries to Matt Jones and Chris Thompson, and that seventh-round pick Keith Marshall sprained his left elbow on his only carry of the game.I definitely got some work in today, and I think it helped me out, said Kelley, who ran for 51 yards on 12 carries. Every time I get up there I try to put myself in a better situation to make the team, take advantage of the opportunity.Bills starting quarterback Tyrod Taylor played only two series, by coach Rex Ryans design, going 2 of 5 for 11 yards before being replaced by E.J. Manuel, who was 21 of 39 for 221 yards and an interception.Ryan also opted to rest running back LeSean McCoy and several key defenders, including defensive tackle Kyle Williams, linebacker Jerry Hughes and cornerbacks Ronald Darby and Stephon Gilmore.I feel pretty good about the guys that I sat, obviously, and I dont think we can afford to get them hurt, Ryan said. Its as simple as that, and I dont care about the criticism.Redskins coach Jay Gruden took a more conventional dress-rehearsal approach to the third preseason game for the Redskins (2-1) and got the kind of performances hed like to see from top players tight end Jordan Reed, receivers DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon, left tackle Trent Williams, and cornerback Josh Norman.ddddddddddddROOKIE WATCHBills: RB Jonathan Williams ran for 42 yards on 11 carries, including a 37-yard touchdown before leaving with a rib injury. ... CB Kevon Seymour, a sixth-round pick, continued his impressive preseason with four tackles.Redskins: LB Sua Cravens was used on several key third downs with the first-team defense. ... CB Kendall Fuller broke up a pass and intercepted another in the end zone in the final minute.POSITION BATTLESBills: K Dan Carpenter was 3 of 3 on field-goal attempts, connecting from 28, 52 and 52 yards. ... LG Spencer Long returned after spraining his right ankle, while Shawn Lauvao, had a false-start penalty in the red zone. ... C Kory Lichtensteiger committed three holding penalties two days after Washington acquired C Bryan Stork from the New England Patriots. ... DL Ziggy Hood had a sack and thrived in a bigger role with DE Chris Baker getting the night off.INJURY REPORTBills: TE Chris Gragg and DB Jonathan Downing suffered season-ending torn ACLs. ... QB Cardale Jones (shoulder), LT Cordy Glenn (ankle), WR Marquise Goodwin (concussion) and S Aaron Williams (concussion) didnt dress.Redskins: LB Ryan Kerrigan had a groin strain on the first series, and Gruden said hell have an MRI on Saturday, along with Marshall. ... RT Morgan Moses (sprained left ankle) is considered day to day.QUOTABLERyan on the Bills 13 penalties for 104 yards: Way too many penalties obviously. I think both teams had a million penalties.Gruden on the Redskins 10 penalties for 87 yards: We have to get those cleaned up. Its hard enough to go down the field first-and-10, second-and-10, but when you have first-and-20 and second-and-25, thats darn near impossible in the NFL.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '

Its always a great experience.Sydney Roosters prop Dylan Napa - who will also feature in the PMs XIII pack - tried to give Inglis an idea of what to expect after savouring his 2014 PNG trip.We went to a school visit and the kids were so happy to see the team, he said.It was only a little thing but they like touching. They dont want autographs or that, they just want to touch you and its a pretty humbling experience. Its a pretty crazy crowd over there and they certainly love their football. Its their national sport so you can only imagine how much they get into it.Meninga has picked a star studded PMs XIII squad that features four Test incumbents. The clash is being used as a genuine selection trial by Meninga before he finalises his 24-strong Kangaroos squad for the end of season Four Nations campaign in the UK. CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. -- A Tennessee high school basketball team had a culture of hazing and bullying even before three of its players were charged with raping a teammate, according to an investigation into the incident. But the investigation released Friday also said there was no evidence that Hamilton County school officials or Ooltewah High School administrators knew or should have known such an incident would occur.Gatlinburg police say three Ooltewah players assaulted a freshman teammate with a pool cue Dec. 22 in an apparent hazing incident while the team was participating in a holiday tournament. Police have said the pool cue tore through the freshmans clothing and into his rectum, forcing emergency surgery. The three were charged as juveniles with aggravated rape.Hamilton County school officials then commissioned an investigation conducted by attorney Courtney Bullard.Bullard, who conducted 40 interviews, reported that nine Ooltewah players said the team participated in an activity they called racking in before the Gatlinburg incident. When racking in, they said, upperclassmen turned out the lights in the locker room, grabbed a freshman and punched him from the neck down, without the intent to cause injury. Many players described `racking in as horseplay or `boys being boys, Bullard said in her report. This description is indicative of a desensitization and minimization of the behavior and a lack of education on what constitutes hazing.Bullard also said she couldnt substantiate whether coach Andre Montgomery and assistant coach Karl Williams were aware of the hazing and bullying but they certainly were aware of excessive horseplay. But she added that there was no prior culture of sexual harassment on the basketball team and the assailants had no prior history of reported similar conduct.Bullards 24-page report recommended making training on Title IX mandatory for all Hamilton County Deparrtment of Education and school administrators, specifically identifying and addressing bullying, hazing and harassment.dddddddddddd She also recommended training on proper reporting, and the repercussions for failure to report.Title IX is a federal law that prohibits sex discrimination in federally funded education programs. The report provides an opportunity to enhance our practices, provide better support and safety for all our students moving forward, interim Hamilton County Department of Education superintendent Kirk Kelly said. The recommendations will serve as a guide to provide ongoing monitoring and development of best practices.Kelly added that while this has been a difficult time for many, it will mean officials are better positioned in the future to respond to problems.Rick Smith, who was superintendent at the time of the incident, announced in March that he would retire July 1 and take leave effective immediately.Montgomery, Williams and assistant principal Allard Nayadley were charged in Hamilton County with failure to report child sexual abuse to the proper authorities, though charges against Williams were dropped in May.Montgomery was indicted in May on four counts of failing to report child sexual abuse.Nayadley entered a pre-trial diversion program in May. If he complies with terms of that program, which include performing community service and taking a class on mandatory reporting, the charges can be removed from his record. He also recently announced he was resigning. In addition, Gatlinburg police detective Rodney Burns faces aggravated perjury charges in Hamilton County stemming from his testimony in a preliminary hearing for the three Ooltewah High School officials.---Information from: Chattanooga Times Free Press, http://www.timesfreepress.com ' ' '

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Finally, the Big 12 has its Top 10 matchup.No. 8 Oklahoma heads to No. 10 West Virginia on Saturday night and the Sooners can wrap up the Big 12 championship if it gets some help earlier in the day from TCU, which hosts second-place Oklahoma State. The Big 12 has been devoid of marquee games this season. Oklahoma started out ranked No. 3 and lost its opener to Houston. Baylor advanced to No. 8 in late October before losing three straight.West Virginia has moved up after beginning unranked and forecast to finish seventh in the league. The Mountaineers havent come close to a Big 12 title since joining the league in 2012.There may not be this much riding on one game in Morgantown since West Virginia lost to rival Pittsburgh in 2007, costing the Mountaineers a berth in the national championship game.Weve been off the radar for a long time, and were OK with that, West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said Monday. We use that as motivation. Whether theyre talking good about us or bad about us, we dont really pay attention to it.On Saturday, it will be the leagues top scoring defense at West Virginia against the conferences best offense. Its exciting but challenging though because they have a raucous crowd, Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said.Oklahoma enters with a 14-game conference winning streak.Theyre playing lights out, Holgorsen said. Known for an offensive league, theyre the ones that got it going on more than anyone. I know its one that our guys are looking forward to.An Oklahoma win coupled with a loss by No. 13 Oklahoma State on Saturday would give the Sooners (8-2, 7-0) their 10th Big 12 championship and render moot the teams Dec. 3 Bedlam meeting in Norman, Oklahoma.Oklahoma wins the title by winning its last two games, while Oklahoma State (8-2, 6-1) can claim it by beating TCU and the Sooners.West Virginia (8-1, 5-1) must win all of its remaining games and needs Oklahoma State to lose to TCU and beat Oklahoma for the Mountaineers to claim the title. West Virginia also has league games left with Iowa State and Baylor. The league instituted a tie-breaker formula in 2015 based on head-to-head meetings if two teams end tied after TCU and Baylor shared the title in 2014.Other notes from the Big 12 coaches call:---BOWL HUNTERSKansas State, TCU and Texas each have a chance to become bowl eligible this week.Kansas State (5-4, 3-3) plays at Baylor (6-3, 3-3), TCU (5-4, 3-3) hosts Oklahoma State, and the Longhorns (5-5, 3-4) play at Kansas (1-9, 0-7).Texas Tech (4-6, 2-5) needs to win both its remaining games to become bowl eligible. The Red Raiders are at Iowa State (2-8, 1-6) on Saturday.---YOUNG BAYLOR QBActing Baylor coach Jim Grobe said hes confident in the ability of freshman quarterback Zach Smith, who took over last week after Seth Russell sustained a season-ending ankle injury.Smith completed 6 of 15 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown. Hes attempted 35 passes all season.I hope we can get him ready in a hurry, Grobe said. Hes got a lot of work to do this week to get comfortable with everything were going to ask him to do. The thing I liked best about him is he didnt have that deer-in-the-headlight look.---GUNDYS HAIRDOOklahoma State coach Mike Gundy, known for his mullet, said the fate of his hairdo might hinge on his sons test scores. His son has been putting the pressure on Gundy to cut his hair, so the coach told him that if he scored above 91 he would think about it. His sons most recent test score was an 88.Gundy said he doesnt necessarily need to maintain his current look to keep a good season going.A lot of people are superstitious about things like that. NEW YORK -- David Ortiz began making his mark on the rivalry between the Boston Red Sox and New York with two long home runs at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 2003.He has not stopped getting big hits against the Yankees since and is ending his career as a highly productive player on a playoff team. Its incredible, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. You often wonder why hes retiring. I know a lot of athletes like to go out on top but gosh the year hes having, I would really have to think about coming back but Im going to encourage him to retire. On Thursday, Ortiz will take his last at-bats in the rivalry when the Red Sox conclude their series with the Yankees at Yankee Stadium.Ortiz announced his retirement before the season and the end of his 14-year tenure with the Red Sox has been marked by tributes in a similar manner to the final seasons of Yankee icons Derek Jeter and Mariano Rivera.Early in his time with the Red Sox, he struggled for playing time while splitting time with Jeremy Giambi and others. Until he hit those two home runs followed by two more in the next game, Ortiz had seven at-bats in the rivalry, but that weekend was part of a 5-for-16 showing and a few weeks later, he delivered his first game-winning hit in the rivalry. Then came the 2004 season, when he had consecutive extra-inning game-ending hits in Games 4 and 5 of the ALCS as the Red Sox became the only team to rally from a three games to none deficit en route to their first World Series title since 1918.Ortiz has 52 of his 53 career home runs vs. the Yankees with the Red Sox. He has the fourth-most home runs all time against the Yankees, tied for fourth all-time with Hall of Famer Hank Greenberg and only behind Manny Ramirez (55), and Hall of Famers Ted Williams (62) and Jimmie Foxx (70).Of those home runs, 31 have been in two versions of Yankee Stadium. He is tied with Mickey Vernon for the second-most among visiting players to New York and gets one more chance to tie or surpass the mark set by Goose Goslin.Theres always motivation when you come to play at Yankee Stadium, Ortiz said. Thats how its been until today. As far as I know, when youre a viillain, youre a villain.dddddddddddd When youre a hero, youre a hero. Not too many guys get to be both. The Red Sox will be taking the field as division champions for the third time in Ortizs tenure. They also won in 2007 and 2013 and Wednesday clinched their eighth division title despite Joe Kelly giving up Mark Teixeiras two-out grand slam in the ninth inning of a 5-3 loss.It doesnt detract at all from what these guys accomplished over the last six months, Red Sox owner John Henry said. The baseball season is an endurance test, so it takes six months to determine a champion. That championship was determined before this game ended.Teixeiras dramatic home run kept the Yankees mathematically alive for at least one more day. Although New York has won six of its last 17 games, it remains four games behind Baltimore in the wild-card race.Henry Owens, who was 10 years old when Ortiz joined Boston, makes the start in place of Drew Pomeranz. Owens made his major league debut at Yankee Stadium last August and has a 5.27 ERA in 15 starts. The 24-year-old left-hander has not pitched since being recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket where he was 10-7 with a 3.53 ERA in 24 starts. Earlier this season, Owens was 0-1 with a 7.79 ERA in four starts for the Red Sox.The last Yankees starting pitcher to face Ortiz will be CC Sabathia, who is 8-12 with a 4.02 ERA.Ortiz is 18-for-70 (.257) with two home runs and six RBI to go along with 16 strikeouts against Sabathia as a Red Sox and 18-for-76 (.237) with two home runs and seven RBI overall in their matchups.Sabathia is 12-13 with a 4.59 ERA in 34 career starts against the Red Sox and with the Yankees, he is 10-9 with a 4.79 ERA in 27 starts. He last opposed the Red Sox Sept. 18 in Boston when he allowed four runs and eight hits in a no-decision.The left-handers last outing was Saturday in Toronto when he allowed four hits in seven shutout innings of a 3-0 loss. It was his 45th career start of at least seven shutout innings and fifth scoreless outing this season. ' ' '

BALTIMORE -- The home runs dont come often these days for 41-year-old Henry Blanco, and neither do starting assignments. When they do, however, Seattles backup catcher often leaves a memorable impression. Blanco hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning off Wei-Yin Chen, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-2 Sunday behind left-hander Joe Saunders. Batting ninth in the lineup, Blanco sent an 0-2 pitch into the left-field seats to erase a 2-1 deficit. The 16-year veteran was playing in his 32nd game of the season, the 17th with Seattle after being signed as a free agent. "If we could get that by the backup catcher every other day, every third day, well be in good shape," acting manager Robby Thompson said. "He comes to play, hes in great shape." Blanco has played for 11 different teams during a career that began in 1997. This was his third homer of the season; the other two were grand slams, including a game winner in his Mariners debut against Oakland on June 15. "When you get a win and you can help the team win some games, its a good feeling," Blanco said. Blancos batting .182, but hes done his job quite capably. "Hes had some huge hits for us," Thompson said. "Huge home runs, a couple grand slams and a two-run there. The times that hes in there, hes produced." Blanco isnt the only old-timer in the Seattle clubhouse. The Mariners other run Sunday came from 41-year-old Raul Ibanez, who hit an RBI double in the second inning. "Thats a good thing," Blanco said. "At this point, you just want to contribute to win games and hope for the best. Raul is a pretty good hitter, hes always been, and I just get lucky." Saunders (10-10) worked out of trouble in almost every inning but improved to 7-0 lifetime against Baltimore after allowing two runs, eight hits and two walks in six innings. He walked off the mound for the last time trailing 2-1, but Blancos blast made him a winner. "It was unreal," Saunders said. "Its one of those moments in the game where its like do or die and he put a good swing on a good pitch, I think, and bailed me out." Saunders, who played a key role for the Orioles late last season, has five consecutive seasons with at least 10 wins. In this one, he walked a tightrope through five innings and gave up a two-run drive to Danny Valencia in the sixth. Baltimore went 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight. The Orioles dropped two of three to the Mariners and went 4-5 on a homestand that began with three games apiece against Boston and Houston. "We did some really good things to create some situations, but Joe pitched out of it," manager Buck Showalter said. "It was really kind of characteristic of a good veteran pitcher like Joe. Weve seen that before." Yoervis Medina struck out four in two perfect innings and Danny Farquhar got three straight outs for his second save, both of which came within 24 hours. Chen (6-4) gave up three runs and five hits over seven innings in losing for the first time in seven starts since May 1. Valencia was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk before the game for his third stint with the Orioles this season. Starting at designated hitter, he homered after Steve Pearce drew a leadoff walk to put Baltimore up 2-1. The lead didnt last. One inning later, following a walk to No. 8 hitter Brendan Ryan, Blanco pulled a slider a few feet inside the foul pole. "Thats the spot I wanted to attack," Chen said through an interpreter. "I threw the ball right on the spot and he still swings the bat really well and he hit a home run off me. Hats off to him." Seattle and Baltimore combined for 14 homers in the three games, none more important than Blancos. "I wasnt expecting to hit a home run," Blanco said. "I was trying to get a pitch where I could put the ball in play and see if something can happen. I just hit it pretty good." The Mariners used successive doubles by Michael Morse and Raul Ibanez to go up 1-0 in the second. Over the first five innings, the Orioles wasted repeated opportunities to score. Notre Dame redshirt sophomore quarterback DeShone Kizer has declared for the NFL draft, the school announced.Thank you. NFL bound, Kizer said toward the end of a minute-long video on Bleacher Report.Kizer started the past 23 games for the Fighting Irish, with a 12-11 record. He threw for 5,809 yards with 47 touchdowns and 19 interceptions, adding 992 rushing yards and 18 more scores on the ground. The 6-foot-4, 230-pound Kizer assumed the starting role in the third game of the 2015 season, replacing Malik Zaire after Zaire suffered a broken ankle against Virginia in Week 2. Kizer threw a game-winning touchdown pass and never looked back, starting every Irish contest since.Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly said in fall camp this season that with Zaire back from injury, both he and Kizer would see extensive time in the season opener at Texas. After Kizer outplayed Zaire in the loss, however, that plan was scrapped, with Kizer assuming full-time duties the rest of the season.Zaire has said he will transfer elsewhere for his fifth college season in 2017.Kizer was voted the Irishs MVP by his teammates at Fridays program awards banquet and named a captain for 2017.DeShone is an extremely gifted quarterback that was faced with a difficult decision, Kelly said Monday in a release. He could retturn as a senior captain at Notre Dame -- a place that he loves, and with a program that respects him immensely.dddddddddddd Or, he could begin the next chapter in his life and accept the opportunity that likely awaits in the NFL.While he chose the latter, the type of leadership DeShone displayed this past season will benefit our program moving forward. Hell certainly be missed on and off the field, but were very happy for him and his family. DeShone will always represent this University with the utmost professionalism and class.Neither Scouts Inc.s Todd McShay nor ESPNs Mel Kiper Jr. have Kizer on their latest draft boards, which are capped at 32 and 25 players, respectively. Kiper recently wrote that Kizer has to go back to school, with McShay adding: Mel is right, Kizer needs another year. The lack of surefire upperclassmen quarterbacks in the 2017 class, however, could prove beneficial for Kizer, who was considered a late-bloomer in high school because of a well-rounded sports background that included four-year stints on both the baseball and basketball teams.Kizer tweeted a statement Monday thanking Notre Dame for its support the past three years.
