Australia back-rower Boyd Cordner is excited about the prospect of taking on Englands giant forwards in Sundays crucial Four Nations encounter at Londons Olympic Stadium (0100 Monday AEDT).England must win the game to have any chance of securing a spot in the final at Anfield on November 20 with the Kangaroos also needing a victory to rubber stamp their place in the decider.Aside from outstanding Warrington front-rower Chris Hill, all of the English forwards have NRL experience, headlined by the three Burgess brothers and Canterbury skipper James Graham.Canberra duo Josh Hodgson and Elliott Whitehead and recently-departed St George Illawarra forward Mike Cooper will also play and back-rower Cordner said he has huge admiration and respect for the English big men.Any side coached by Wayne Bennett is a tough team and were going to have to prepare our best and play our best footy as well, Cordner said.Theyre captained by Sam Burgess who I think is one of the best players in the game and with him in their forward pack leading the way its going to be a tough challenge. When the three of the Burgesses are on at the same time its hard because they are big guys and they are hard to bring down. But its something we are just going to have to deal with.England lost their first match to New Zealand by a point and were less than convincing in a scratchy win against Scotland. However, Cordner is expecting the hosts to be much-improved in front of whats expected to be a crowd of around 40,000.They have to win and we dont want to lose one, he said. They have some big boys and we have to slow down their middle and then hopefully shut down their strike out wide. Most of the squad flew out to Barcelona on Sunday after the win against New Zealand for a short break and Cordner said it had been a welcome distraction on a long tour.It was good, we had a few days off and went sightseeing, he said.We saw the city a bit. Its good to do that kind of stuff and have a few days off to freshen up and get ready for this weeks game. Kirk Cousins Youth Jersey . PHILADELPHIA -- Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Chase Utley enjoyed a fairytale return to Philadelphia on Tuesday night. On Wednesday, the Dodgers return to the everyday realities of the National League West race.Utley, a six-time All-Star while playing most of his first 13 seasons with the Phillies, was accorded a standing ovation in his first game in Citizens Bank Park since he was traded for two minor leaguers last Aug. 19.He later hit a solo homer off Philadelphia starter Vince Velasquez, then added a grand slam off reliever Michael Mariot, as the Dodgers rolled to a 15-5 victory. After each homer he acknowledged a curtain call.No doubt a little extra adrenaline is flowing, Utley said. Adrenaline can be your friend at times. There was a lot of adrenaline flowing tonight. On Wednesday the Dodgers, jousting with the San Francisco Giants for the divisional lead, will send left-hander Scott Kazmir (9-6, 4.44) to the mound against rookie right-hander Jake Thompson (1-1, 8.68).The 32-year-old Kazmir pitched well against the Phillies in Los Angeles last week, allowing two runs on four hits over six innings while striking out six and walking three. He was nonetheless tagged with a 6-2 loss, running his career record against Philadelphia to 1-2 with a 5.91 ERA.I was able to make pitches when I needed to and had the changeup today, Kazmir said, according to Major League Baseballs official web site. Thats a tough one. We wanted to pull this one out and have a good off-day, but (we) let this one slip away.Thompson negotiated five innings against Colorado to earn his first major league victory his last time out, inn his first home start.dddddddddddd. Thompson allowed three runs on two hits while striking out six and walking three. Its kind of nice to get the first one out of the way, and hopefully Ill gain a lot more confidence and comfort on the mound and keep it rolling, said Thompson, who had been shelled by the San Diego Padres in his major league debut.Manager Pete Mackanin said Thompson, who threw 87 pitches (just 49 strikes), was a little erratic with his command.Tall order for Thompson to face this team, Mackanin added. This is a darn good hitting team. ... He did a pretty good job. ... He battled through it.Thompson equaled a 114-year-old club record when he struck out four batters in the second inning, the first of which, David Dahl, reached on a wild pitch. Doc White is the only other Philadelphia pitcher to fan four in an inning, having done so on July 21, 1902 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. He has never faced the Dodgers.Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard hit a two-run homer Tuesday, his 18th of the season and the 375th of his career. That moved him past Rocky Colavito and into sole possession of 76th place on the all-time list, but was an afterthought given Utleys return, as well as the outcome. As players we just try to play the game as its supposed to be played, but I think it was something bigger tonight, Howard said. Then for Chase to come back and do what he did tonight, hopefully hes done doing that, but thats just the kind of player he is, and just the kind of guy he is. ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Allyson Felix and LaShawn Merritt are two savvy track stars whove been around long enough to know that not everything always goes to plan.Over the final, topsy-turvy 30 minutes at the Olympic track Saturday night, both Americans came away with prizes theyd been wishing for all along. Those prizes were both golds from the 4x400 relays, and the United States exited the final night of action at Olympic Stadium with 31 medals -- the most it has taken in a non-boycotted Olympics since 1956, when the world and track were both very different places. One of those 31 had been looking to go to 41-year-old Bernard Lagat in the 5,000 meters. He actually finished fifth but two runners ahead of him, including American Paul Chelimo , were disqualified for interference. A review ensued, Chelimo was reinstated to silver and Lagat dropped to fifth -- a bummer for the elder statesman of the U.S. track team, but some sort of sign for the team: Even when it lost, it won.All those reviews and appeals made for a strange scene as the program came to a close. Mo Farah, Chelimo and Hagos Gebrhiwet marched to the podium to receive their medals nearly an hour after the evenings final race in front of a few thousand stragglers in the stands. That was wacky. But the nights biggest surprise came from Matthew Centrowitz, who shocked the field in a slow 1,500-meter final and became the first American to win a gold in the metric mile since 1908. His time was 3 minutes, 50 seconds.Doing my victory lap, I literally kept screaming to everyone I know, `Are you kidding me? Centrowitz said.Felix spent a lot of the week saying the same thing -- and not in a good way. This has been an adjust-on-the-fly year for Americas best-known track star -- her failure to make the team for the 200 meters, her jaw-dropping silver-medal moment when a diving sprinter from the Bahamas beat her in the 400 and more. But on back-to-back nights, she took relay gold. This time, she ran a 49.66-second anchor lap in the 4x400. Over the second and third laps, Americans Natasha Hastings and Phyllis Francis held big leads, only to watch them dwindle dramatically as they legged out their final meters.Felix took the green baton about two steps ahead of Jamaicas Novelene Williams-Mills, and slowly, steadily expanded it for a total time of 3 minutes, 19.06 seconds and a 1.28-second win. Yes, the United States may have relay problems -- see, the mens 4x100, which flamed out again the night before -- but this certainly isnt one of them. The race has gone to America six straight times. The look on Felixs face as she crossed the line and waved the green baton said what words could not: Thank goodness, its finally over. The toughest, without a doubt, Felix said of her 2016. This year, you make plans and want everything to go according to schedule. Nothing went according to schedule.Merritt went a similar route. He was caught in the tail wind of South African Wayde van Nierkerks world-record 400 run earlier in the week and settled for bronze. Then, Merritt was a bit player in the Usain Bolt going-away party, finishing sixth in the 200.But Bolt was long gone -- having stopped by the track quickly to receive gold medal No. 9 and take a selfie with Farah -- and South Africa had left the building, too.As Felix had done minutes earlier, Merritt took a narrow lead and opened it way up. This relay gold goes with those he took in both the 4x4 relay and the 400 flat in 2008.It wasnt all perfect for the red, white and blue.High jumpers Chaunte Lowe, a mother of three who finally felt ready for her Olympic moment, and Vashti Cunningham, daughter of former NFL quarterback Randall, finished fourth and 13th in a contest taken by Ruth Beitia of Spain. In the nights other finals, South African Caster Semenya won the 800 meters and Thomas Rohler of Germany won javelin in results that surprised nobody. That the Americans are leading the medals table is no shock, either. Theyve done it at every games since 1992.The numbers may not have shocked anyone. Some of the names, and where they ended up on the finish list, certainly did.I would have been really happy with a silver, Centrowitz said. And coming away with gold is unbelievable. Hurricanes winger Cory Jane usually gets the plaudits for his attacking and finishing skills but it is his behind-the-scenes work on the teams defence which is giving him more satisfaction this year.It has been 221 minutes since the Hurricanes last conceded a try - a first-half effort by Crusaders midfielder Ryan Crotty in their final regular-season match.Since then Chris Boyds team have kept the Sharks scoreless in their quarterfinal and conceded just three penalties goals to the Chiefs in a semifinal win that was built on a huge defensive effort by the Hurricanes on their own line. When the team talk about [defence coach] John [Plumtree] or the media do I get a little bit of satisfaction there too because Im behind the scenes helping him out as well, said Jane.Weve changed our defensive structure from what it was last year and even from game one [this year] to what it is now. Were slowly getting better and better at it.When we dont get it quite right teams can put points on us. But at the moment the boys are working hard for each other and were putting pressure on the opposition but we definitely need to take it up a level this week.Saturdays Super Rugby final in Wellington against the Lions could be a classic case of defence versus attack. The resurgent South Africans have advanced to their first Super Rugby final on the back of an all-out attacking style - spearheaded by first five-eighth Elton Jantjies - which has seen them score 81 tries so far this year.Back-rower Brad Shields knows setting the Lions big forwards on the back foot and slowing down their ball will be crucial if the Hurricanes are to go one better than they did in last years final at Westpac Stadium. They are pretty dangerous when they get fast ball and they get a bit of a roll on, said Shields.Weve got to match it, if not be better than them, to hopefully come out on top and play our game. The Supreme Court of India has passed an order that limits the BCCIs financial freedom and power until the board and its state associations comply with the Lodha Committees recommendations. In a 25-page order issued on Friday, the court directed the BCCI not to distribute funds to its state associations until they submit affidavits stating compliance with the recommendations to the court and the Lodha Committee in two weeks. The order was passed by a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India TS Thakur and Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud. The court also asked BCCI president Anurag Thakur and secretary Ajay Shirke to meet the Lodha Committee before November 3. They were required to submit an affidavit of compliance in the court by December 3, elaborating on the recommendations already implemented by the BCCI and what it had done to persuade the state associations to adopt the recommendations. The court scheduled the next hearing for December 5. In another significant decision, the court asked the Lodha Committee to appoint an independent auditor to verify the BCCIs accounts. The Lodha Committee was also asked to set a threshold value for various contracts the BCCI enters into, and all contracts in excess of that amount would need the committees approval. The next major contract for the board is the IPL broadcast deal, set to be finalised on October 25.Ive always maintained that we have the highest respect for judiciary. We have welcomed the Lodha Committee recommendations, we more than welcome them because we have nothing to hide, Thakur told Sportstar after the order came out. Im very optimistic in my approach and I am sure some of the issues that we have requested for a re-look will be addressed. We are not fighting against anyone. All I have been saying is that there is confusion regarding certain recommendations. I am sure a dialogue can be had in the interest of the game.Fridays order is the second one issued this week by the court, after an interim order on October 17 in response to the Lodha Committees status report, which had recommended that the BCCI office bearers be superseded and a panel of administrators be appointed because the board was impeding the implementation of the court-approved recommendations. In its order the court noted that there was substance in the status report. It also said the BCCI was in breach of the July 18 court order that had approved the majority of recommendations in the Lodha Committees report and asked the board and states to implement them in four to six months. Implementation of the final judgment of this Court dated 18 July 2016 has prima facie been impeded by the intransigence of BCCI and its office bearers, the court order said. The court said that at this stage it was refraining from approving the Lodha Committees suggestion to supersede the BCCI office bearers because the board had said in a submission to the court that it would make every genuine effort to persuade the state associations to comply with the recommendations. The BCCIs position had been that it could not implement the Lodha Committees recommendations without a majority of its state associations agreeing to do so. The key recommendations the board said the states were reluctant to accept were the one-state-one-vote policy, the age cap of 70 for administrators, and the limit of three, three-year terms with cooling-off periods in between for office bearers. The court order put the states under pressure to comply by cutting off their funding. The BCCI shall forthwith cease and desist from making any disbursement of funds for any purpose whatsoever to any state association until and unless the state association concerned adopts a resolution undertaking to implement the recommendations of the Committee as accepted by this Court in its judgment dated 18 July, the court order said. A state was to receive funds from the BCCI only after the resolution, signed by its president, was submitted to the committee and the court. The court said it had taken cognisance of the argument raised by the boards legal counsel Kapil Sibal, who had said the BCCI would demonstrate to the Lodha Committee how it had already fulfilled some of the recommendations. The court asked the committee to verify whether there had been full compliance. NFL Jerseys From China . Ireland will reject any Willie Anderson-style challenges to the Haka in Chicago, instead focusing on last-minute mental preparation.Captain Rory Best will not lead his side into the kind of nose-to-nose confrontation that Anderson produced with All Black Wayne Shelford in 1989.Irelands players linked arms before that 23-6 Dublin defeat, advancing on the All Blacks mid-Haka - yet Best insisted Joe Schmidts men treat the ceremonial war dance with full respect but as a sideshow. Because there have been a few incidents they dont allow you to go past the 10-metre line anyway, said Best.So well just line up and I think everyone will deal with it in their own way. Some people will watch it, respect it. Other people will be looking at it but in their own head theyll be rehearsing their own roles. For me it will be going through plays to make sure that when the game kicks off I am in the best possible place to win the game for Ireland. Because ultimately that is what it is all about. The Haka is a great spectacle, a great sideshow for supporters. My kids absolutely love to watch it whenever we are at home. For us as players though, its a sideshow. All that matters to us is the kick-off, the game, and all that comes after that.Still without a win in 111 years against New Zealand, Ireland came within a whisker of ending that hoodoo in 2013. Ryan Crottys overtime try and Aaron Crudens touchline conversion snatched New Zealand a 24-22 victory, however.Former Ulster lock Anderson won 27 caps between 1984 and 1990, with that challenge to the Haka among his standout Test moments. A young Best was in the Lansdowne Road stands when Anderson and Shelford faced off amid the Haka, and admitted that moment remains imprinted on his mind.I remember Willie Anderson when they charged the Haka; it was all about blood and thunder for as long as the engine would hold out and then (they were) just gallant losers at the end, said Best.Thats not being disrespectful to those teams. The professional era has changed that. When you think of big moments like that, that day theres no doubt that Willie Anderson went out and they werent afraid of them. They were going to take the game to them. They just ultimately ran out of steam and thats something that we know now that with the way were prepared that that wont happen. Its just a question of whether mentally we can stay in the game. TROON, Scotland -- A look at the second round Friday in the British Open at Royal Troon Golf Club (all times EDT):LEADING: Phil Mickelson made his first two bogeys of the tournament but still shot a 2-under 69. He reached the midway point at 10-under 132.TRAILING: Henrik Stenson was one shot back after posting a 65, the best round of the day.LUCK OF THE DRAW: The morning starters caught a break with the weather, which turned especially nasty in the afternoon. The top 14 players on the leaderboard all came from the morning wave. Of the 20 players who broke par, only four started after lunchtime.MISSING THE CUT: Former Open champions Ernie Els and Louis Oosthuizen were among those missing the cut. Els could have made it to the weekend with a par at the final hole, but the Big Easy took bogey after driving it into a fairway bunker. Oosthuizen, who lost in a three-way playoff last year at St. Andrews and was No. 14 in the world, shot 83. He was the highest-ranked player to be sent home.GETTING THROUGH: Mickelson and Rickie Fowler both made the cut in a major for the first time this year.SHOT OF THE DAY: Mickelson nearly holed out his tee shot at the 123-yard eighth hole, known as the Postage Stamp. The ball rolled right up next to the cup, leaving Lefty with a tap-in birdie that was roughly the length of a postage stamp.KEY STATISTIC: Of the eight players who have shot 63 in the opening round of a major championship, Mickelson was only the third to break par in the second round.NOTEWORTHY: Billy Horschel followed up a 67 on Thursday with an 85, the highest score of the second round. The 18-shot differential was the biggest meltdown in Open history over the first two rounds.QUOTEWORTHY: Youve got to understand that some people get lucky, some people get unlucky. Youve got to take what you get and roll with it and try to do the best job you can. -- Jason Day, on the much tougher conditions that faced those teeing off in the afternoon.SATURDAY FORECAST: Mostly dry with wind gusts up to 20 mph.TELEVISION: Golf Channel (4-7 a.m.); NBC (7 a.m.-2:30 p.m.).FEATURED GROUPS: 10:20 a.m. -- Henrik Stenson, Phil Mickelson; 10:10 a.m. -- Keegan Bradley, Soren Kjeldsen; 9:10 a.m. -- Dustin Johnson, Francesco Molinari. Call them the NRLs cardiac kids but Penriths playmaking young guns are fast mastering the art of putting opposing sides to the sword at the death. The Panthers believe their new reputation as the competitions heart-stoppers will actually help them when they enter this years finals series as arguably the most inexperienced team. They gave coach Anthony Griffin a cruel re-introduction to the league when he took over from Ivan Cleary this season after more than a year off - all nine of their opening games were decided by less than 10 points. It wasnt until a 12-point win over the Warriors in round 10 that Griffin was able to breathe easy before the full time siren. But that didnt mean the mountain men suddenly stopped sending games down to the wire.A league-high 16 of their contests this season have been decided by 10 points or less, 13 of them by a converted try or less.Only nine of those 16 games were converted into wins but its a nerve-racking record second-rower Isaah Yeo believes could deliver them a deep push into the finals despite their lack of experience. This weeks line-up against Manly contains just 23 games of finals experience, 13 of them owned by veterans Peter Wallace and Trent Merrin. Those tight games wwere a real learning curve for us.dddddddddddd Obviously we didnt get all of them and that could come down to inconsistency and inexperience, Yeo told AAP on Thursday. But over the last couple of months, weve been really good on the field and I think thats showing with our defence at the moment.Winners of six of their past seven, the Panthers have only once conceded more than three tries - during a golden point loss to the Warriors - and given up a total 98 points in that period.Melbourne, the leagues best defensive team, have conceded 114 points over the same stretch.Everyone thinks were an attacking side but were able to keep some really good sides to low-scoring numbers and come out over the top of teams with 15 to 20 minutes to go, Yeo said.We obviously know the finals are a different beast and were not there yet. But well ride the wave and listen to the people that have been there before.NRLS CARDIAC KIDS: Games decided by six points or lessPenrith (13)Cronulla, North Queensland, Gold Coast, St George Illawarra (9)Canterbury (8)Canberra, Warriors, Sydney Roosters, Parramatta (7) ' ' '

Professional sport is far richer than it has ever been, and yet all sports seem united by a desire to generate even more cash. The motivation is the same, whether it is in FIFAs wish to expand the World Cup beyond 32 teams, India playing West Indies in a T20I series in Florida, or in the NFL playing three games in October in London. While cricket attempts to take hold in America, so Americas game attempts to grow in England. This year is the tenth consecutive one in which regular season games in American football have been held in London. What began as an idiosyncratic novelty has gradually become an accepted part of the British sporting calendar. The number of games per season in London has risen from one to three and will rise further, to four in 2018. Even as the number of matches has swelled, it has not been able to keep pace with demand.Of the 15 NFL matches that have been played at Wembley Stadium to date, only one has not been a sell-out. Sky Sports now televises more than 100 live games a year, and the average audience has doubled in the past decade. Meanwhile the BBCs highlights show, which launched last year, now receives a total audience of one million. The BBC also shows four live games every year - the three in London and the Super Bowl, the NFLs annual championship game.Games in London are a deliberate loss leader, Alistair Kirkwood, head of NFL Europe, explained earlier this year. The matches make a loss for the NFL because of the costs of paying for the clubs to relocate for a week, and compensating the home club for losing revenue. But the NFL sees this as a short-term investment and envisages matches in Britain ultimately helping to make all 32 clubs richer through more lucrative sponsorship, merchandise sales and commercial rights.Perhaps the most important part of the NFLs approach to growing the game in England is that it is about more than just monetising Americans who have settled across the pond. It is about developing new fans too.For the last two years, the NFL has organised a fans day in Regents Street, central London, using everything from inflatable tackling dummies, cheerleaders and American food and drink to show off the sport to new fans. About half a million people showed up. Most stumbled across the event rather than sought it out, yet in many ways that is the point. It was designed to increase awareness of the NFL among those who knew and cared little for it.Here there are many lessons for cricket. The raft of high-profile cricket events in the USA in the last year - the Warne-Tendulkar Legends series, the staging of Caribbean Premier League games and the West Indies-India internationals - seem to have been designed squarely to make cash out of the expat market. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with that. But there is a problem when a bunch of 1990s stars slugging it out in a baseball stadium is seen as a substitute for a meaningful development strategy.Getting the NFL shown on free-to-air TV - through the BBC highlights show, which is designed for the non-hardcore fan - is central to the sports approach to Britain. Yet so far there have been no attempts to get cricket on free-to-air TV in the States. Indeed, the India-West Indies T20Is were not shown on any TV channel in the USA at all.Nor has there been a substantive attempt - Courtney Walsh bowling to the mayor of Indianapolis doesnt really count - to make cricket accessible, relevant or even known beyond those who already follow the game. Sadly, this is in keeping with the history of the sport in the USA.A lot of focus does tend to go on to the commercial side of things, an ICC source said of those in charge of US cricket two years ago. And when marquee matches have been held in Malaysia, Singapore and even the United Arab Emirates, organisers there too have rarely used them to win new converts to cricket. The most successful sport yet at entering a new market has been basketball in China. It has done so through an enlightened, long-term approach, focusing both on the grassroots and professional game, and the fortuitous emergence of the superstar Yao Ming. The NFLs approach to Britain and elsewhere is being governed by this template.Yet such sophistication has long been absent in crickets approach to growth, which has been impatient and top-down, seldom recognising the importance of engaging children without a national affinity to the sport or the sheer time such expansionism requires before it yields financial rewards.Cricket in the US hasnt developed the same kind of commercial or managerial sophistication as the NBA in China or the NFL in the UK, says Simon Chadwick, a professor of sports enterprise at the University of Salford in England. Cricket needs pitches, players and points of engagement, not just Warne and Tendulkar. The sport needs to give people in the US reasons to watch and reasons to play. The historic failure of those running US cricket is borne out by the terrible participation rates for junior cricketers. There were only 1230 junior cricketers playing in the US in 2014, according to the ICC census. In contrast, there are now 6000 junior players in American football in Britain, plus another 5000 players at universities. This is not just vindication for a decade of matches in London, but also the work that American football has done in establishing itself at grassroots level.Osi Umenyiora, a former NFL star who was born in England, is paid by the NFL to help identify athletes in their late teens and early 20s who could take their skills to American football. While the ICC has taken some important steps to reform American cricket over the last two years - like suspending USACA, whose leadership stymied US cricket for many years, and creating an ICC Americas team to compete in the Caribbean domestic 50-over tournament - transforming grassroots cricket and ending the exclusivity surrounding the sport will take many years. The most important lesson that cricket can learn from this NFL story is that other sports are coming into crickets traditional territories - from the NFL in Britain, to European club football in India - while making a concerted effort to grow in the most lucrative untapped sports market of them all: China. There comes a point when the growth of sports is a zero-sum game. Someone choosing to watch the NFL in Britain or the Premier League in India is doing so instead of watching cricket at that time. Other sports increased popularity could thereby undermine the commercial value of cricket. This is why crickets approach, in the US and beyond, must be about long-term development more than short-term profits. Expanding the sports global footprint is ultimately an insurance policy, a way of reducing a financial over-dependence on India and guarding against a drop in interest in crickets traditional powerhouses. Frans Nielsen Jersey . I cant pinpoint a date, but I do remember a player from my youth. Paul Georges buzzer-beating 3-pointer at the end of the third quarter spurred a 21-4 run, finally sending Indiana past the Magic 97-87 in a tougher-than-expected opening night matchup. BARCELONA, Spain -- Lionel Messi scored a hat trick to inflict a humbling defeat on his former mentor Pep Guardiola on Wednesday, leading Barcelona to an emphatic 4-0 victory over Manchester City in the Champions League.Messi sped through Citys defense and around former Barcelona goalkeeper Claudio Bravo before giving the hosts a 17th-minute lead in a Group C match that both teams finished with 10 men.It only got worse for Bravo, who was sent off in the 53rd minute for using his hands to block a shot outside the area after his poor pass gifted the ball to Luis Suarez.Messi struck again in the 61st and 69th to take his total to 89 goals in Europes top club competition. The Argentina forward is second only to Cristiano Ronaldo, who has scored 98.Barcelona was reduced to 10 men after substitute Jeremy Mathieu was shown a second yellow card in the 73rd, but Neymar still rounded off the win from a pass by Messi. The Brazil striker scored moments after he had missed a penalty that Messi had earned. We know Barcelona. When they arrive (in the area) their strikers punish you, Guardiola said. Its October. We have lost a match. Its not a quarterfinal or semifinal. Now we have to analyze what happened and rest ... We are in the process (of growth).Guardiola lost for the second time upon returning to Camp Nou where he established himself as one of the worlds top managers by leading Barcelona to 14 titles from 2008-12. The former Barcelona player coached Bayern Munich when the German side lost 3-0 here in the Champions League semifinals two years ago, when Messi scored twice. After winning its first 10 matches under Guardiola, City has now gone winless in four games in all competitions.Barcelona extended its unbeaten run at home in European competition to 18 matches.A third win in as many games increased the five-time European champions control of the group. Barcelona has nine points, while second-place City stays on four. Borussia Moenchengladbach is third with three points after beating Celtic 2-0 in Glasgow.Barcelona and City will meet again in Manchester on Nov. 1.Messi scored a hat trick in consecutive games in the Champions League for the first time -- after three goals in a record-setting 7-0 win over Celtic. He missed the 2-1 victory over Moenchengladbach while being sidelined for three weeks with injury.Messi returned fromm that right groin strain on Saturday, scoring as a substitute to help beat Deporitvo La Coruna 4-0.ddddddddddddWe have seen Messis capacity to finish off goals. Its like he is playing in the school yard. He never gets nervous, said Luis Enrique. It doesnt matter how many days he has been inactive, how many games he has missed ... (he is) total football. Those of us who train with him are continually amazed by what he does. Not just for the goals he scores, but how he helps the team.As expected from teams that have both been stylized by Guardiola, City tried to be Barcelonas mirror image from the start. In a controversial move, Guardiola left striker Sergio Aguero on the bench in a bid to strengthen midfield and dispute Barcelonas ball control more, before eventually sending him on in the 79th.Both sides pressed high up the pitch, fought for possession of the ball, and exchanged attractive flowing attacks. But Messi didnt allow the parity to last very long.Andres Iniesta slipped a pass back to Messi, Citys Fernandinho fell while trying to chase, and the forward was left all alone to send Bravo floundering to the turf before steering the ball into the empty net.City finally managed to threaten in the closing stages of the first half, when Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen denied Ilkay Gundogans shot from close range and John Stones headed wide.City, however, soon found itself playing with 10 men after both his hands and feet failed Bravo.Guardiola had urged City to buy Bravo from Barcelona at the start of the season for his allegedly superior passing skills to predecessor Joe Hart. But Bravo gave Suarez the ball with a poor pass outside his box. He compounded that by raising his arms to block his resulting shot, leaving the referee no choice but to send him off.Bravos sending-off was decisive, Luis Enrique said.Messi later made good on the advantage by taking Iniestas pass and firing past Bravos replacement, Willy Caballero, who would later save a penalty from Neymar.Messi then used his left foot for a third time when he tapped in Suarezs pass after the striker pounced on Gundogens errant pass for Stones, who was then unable to prevent Neymar from scoring with a low shot in the 89th. The flex position on DraftKings -- or in your season-long fantasy football league, for that matter -- is really just a WR4, RB3 or TE2. But if you view the position as a strategic advantage rather than a leftover slot determined by price or bye-week availability, you could have a leg up on your opponents.I cannot tell you how many owners fill out their lineups only to slot the highest-priced player they can afford with their remaining salary into flex. Sure, we might have ways of justifying these players -- maybe X, Y and Z will all happen and he will score two touchdowns. Anything is possible. But thats exactly the kind of thinking that Im hoping to erase from your lineup-building process. Id like you to know whom you want on your rosters and why before you ever get to the sites salaries. Next, I want you to consider your roster as a whole. Are you competing in head-to-head contests? Double-ups? Huge prize-pool multi-entry tournaments? What is it that you want your lineup(s) to do for you -- beat one other person, or a half million other lineups? With those considerations in mind, here are a few principles I use to fill my flex spot:StackingEveryone knows that quarterback and wide receiver are the highest correlated fantasy point pairing, and you likely build your cash game and tournament lineups around such mini-stacks every week. Adding a running back to that combination might seem counterintuitive (if youre high on the passing game, why roster the running back?), but DFS expert Chris Raybon has shown a trend of three or four main stacks that involve at least QB, WR1 and RB being effective in terms of their potential to exceed the average projections of the positions. I think of it in terms of giving yourself a good chance to gain access to all of a teams touchdowns. So, if youre high on Derek Carr and Amari Cooper, think about using Latavius Murray in the flex. Hes got a reputation for not being reliable, and maybe not even being well liked by his own coaches, but the Oakland Raiders ran the ball 59 percent of the time from inside the 10-yard line last year (and 42 percent in the red zone overall). Thats a lot of opportunity for a running back. Other teams that ran a high percentage in the red zone included Dallas, Atlanta and Pittsburgh. Now that people are on a minimum-priced Dak Prescott and Dez Bryant stack (predicted by some to be the highest Week 1 stack), will Ezekiel Elliott be forgotten? Are people afraid that Tevin Coleman will detract from Devonta Freemans production? These are ideal situations to go one step further with your stack than most of your opponents will and put you in position to access all of one teams scoring.ScoringSome weeks I look at my lineup and all I see is risk and upside. These are fun tournament lineups to make, but its important to see both upside and downside in your DFS lineups. Many of us -- myself included -- are optimists and have a much easier time seeing how things could work out beneficially when rostering a Chris Hogan or Brock Osweiler. In a tournament, you need a lot of low-probability, high-upside events to happen simultaneously to find yourself atop a huge field. But even in these big multi-entry games with huge prize pools, there is room for some safety. It goes without saying that cash-game lineups are built on solid ground, and safety starts with opportunities. Touches and targets from a team and quarterback with a track record of moving the ball and scoring are what Im looking for in a safe player, whether Im using him to balance a high-risk lineup or further shore up an already-solid squad. On a PPR site, receptions are obviously extremely valuable and the highest target/reception guys are priced accordingly -- Julio Jones, Antonio Brown and DeAndre Hopkins among them. But someone like Jarvis Landry is affordable. In 2015, he posted nearly identical numbers to Odell Beckham Jr. with over 10 targets and nearly seven catches per game. Landry is a great flex filler. Michael Crabtree and Eric Decker (with around nine targets per game) are players I used a lot to round out my lineups last season and should be in line for similar numbers this year. Crabtree still comes at a significant discount relative to players with similar numbers.UpsideOn the other hand, some lineups emerge that beg for upside. Theyre full of safe, high-floor players but lack the ability to really push your lineup into elite range. This is where I look to big-play guys -- the receivers with great speed, who stretch the field and make 80-yard touchdown catches look routine. There arent many of them, but they often come cheap because those long plays are anything but guaranteed. Players like DeSean Jackson, Travis Benjamin and John Brown could fit the bill once again for 2016, as they all have competent quarterbacks who pass often and can throw deep.Third-down or pass-catching running backs also can provide some upside and are typically priced low. As long as the player is involved in the game plan, and you have a reasonable expectation that the team will score, guys like Theo Riddick, Giovani Bernard, Shane Vereen and, of course, Danny Woodhead make great fill-in flex options.DiversificationThe chalk plays are the chalk plays for a reason. Theyre good players in good defensive matchups, probably in what Vegas expects to be high-scoring games. Plus, there is plenty of content from expert analysts telling you whom to play every week, which leads to high rates of ownership. You know you need to use game theory to win big games (game theory is the approach of making your decisions based on what others are doing, not merely doing what appears optimal). But that doesnt mean you have to fade every good player. One way to diversify your lineups at the flex position is to use a teams best player when that team is in what seems to be a bad matchup. The crowds wont be on Keenan Allen vs. Seattle, or Sammy Watkins vs. the Jets. Todd Gurley figures to remain the Los Angeles Rams primary offensive weapon, even when hes facing Arizona or Seattle, situations when most people will be looking elsewhere at running backs in better matchups. Top players often find their way to abundant fantasy points due to their own talent and their teams reliance on their playmaking regardless of defensive scheme.Another option for diversification is to pay up for the top position player when there is significant and obvious value at that position. This typically works for tight ends or running backs (or quarterbacks) when a starter is injured. What doesnt work is to use a player with no opportunity or little talent -- regardless of the matchup.Above all, dont let circumstances like remaining salary dictate which player fills this slot on your roster. Make it work for you to gain an edge on your opponents with a more thorough stack, higher upside, increased security or that unique player with low ownership. How you design and arrange your lineup should vary from week to week. Thats the beauty of DFS; what works best one week wont be the answer the following week. So dont take any one strategy as a strict rule of thumb. Be flexible and on the lookout for that weeks winning formula. Bruce Matthews Womens Jersey . Olympic champion Justin Rose has announced he will be out of action for the next two months to fully recover from a back injury. The decision means Rose, who won two points from five matches in Europes Ryder Cup defeat to the United States last week, will miss next weeks British Masters, a tournament he won in 2002.Following an intense summer schedule and discussion with my team, I have decided to take the next eight weeks off for rest and recovery, the 36-year-old said in a statement. As many of you know, during the Players Championship I experienced discomfort in my back from a disc herniation and was sidelined for the following month.I worked hard to be able to return for the U.S. Open, but my ongoing tournament schedule, combined with heavy preparation for the Olympics, did not allow for full and proper recovery. At this point in my career, it is important to invest in my body and this time off is crucial for me to return to peak performance. The remainder of the year has such a great run of tournaments and I am very disappointed to have to miss out on some of them. The importance of the European Tours Race to Dubai and my relationship with the British Masters makes these tournaments particularly tough to miss.I want to send my appreciation to the European Tour and [chief executive] Keith Pelley for being understanding of my need for time off and I thank them, my sponsors and the fans for their unwavering support.Rose said during the Ryder Cup that he was unconcerned by the leaking of his personal medical records by Russian hackers. The information on a therapeutic use exemption (TUE), which was granted so he could take an anti-inflammatory drug for his back injury, was stolen from the World Anti-Doping Agencys data storage system and published online by the so-called Fancy Bears.Rose announced on May 19 he was withdrawing from the following weeks BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth. NEW YORK -- Blake Dietrick never thought shed get a chance to play in the WNBA.Even when she starred at Princeton, she figured shed head off to the banking world after graduating. Only one Ivy League womens basketball player had gone to the WNBA and that was 15 years ago.Never in a million years, Dietrick said laughing in a phone interview with The Associated Press on Friday. Freshman year I was planning to major in econ, work on Wall Street -- as is the career path of many a Princeton student. Instead, here I am.The San Antonio guards road to the WNBA took an extra year. She got cut last season from both Washington and Los Angeles training camps after graduating from college. Undeterred, she played in Italy for Orvieto. She averaged 15.5 points in a league that featured WNBA players. It gave her confidence and showed her that she could play with the best in the world.Last year I was nervous, never had played at that level before, she said. That was disappointing to feel that way. To be given another chance was amazing. This spring, she got the invite to Seattles training camp and was the last player to make the team.It was awesome just to hear that they believed in me and believed I could play at this level, Dietrick said. It was really fulfilling.Playing in Seattle also gave the Boston native a chance to play with Sue Bird, who she idolized growing up. When Dietrick was younger she would often watch UConn games and attend the schools youth camps.I was little star struck at first, Dietrick said of sharing the court with Bird. She was a great teammate off the court. It was a nice first experience.Bird was impressed with the young guard.Blakes done a really good job. Shes really strong, Bird said. Shes got really good size and strength and is fundamentally sound. Shes really smart. You dont have to tell Blake to do things more than once. She played in two games with the Storm before getting cut on June 25, scoring two points. She laughed recalling her first game.I was more like dont mess up, dont mess up, she said. I was super happy, it was a great experience to get on the floor. Indianas a louud arena.dddddddddddd Im back at the beginning. Worked my way up through college. Started back at square one again. Now shes on a new team as San Antonio signed her to a 7-day contract on Tuesday. The Stars played her former team Friday night.Watching Blakes career, I have always admired the intelligence and the toughness, San Antonio coach Dan Hughes said. She is definitely a Jersey girl. I love that combination. It has been really great to put her with the Stars and get a chance to look at her on a daily basis.San Antonio visits New York this weekend bringing Dietrick close to Princeton. Unfortunately her college coaches wont be able to take in Sundays game because they are out recruiting. Theyll be watching from afar. Its such a bummer, Princeton coach Courtney Banghart said of having to miss her former star play. The WNBA wasnt on my radar for her at all when she first got here. But by the time she left I knew theres no way that this kid couldnt help a team in that league.Banghart did get to see Dietrick last week when she came by the Tigers basketball camp. The guard, who helped Princeton to a 30-0 regular season record her senior year and an NCAA Tournament victory was home. She signed autographs for 1 1/2 hours after camp ended, posing for photos and encouraging the young girls who two years earlier had been cheering for her from the stands.Honestly, it makes me so humbled, Dietrick said of the attention she got. I see how Sue and Breanna (Stewart) and all those people have to sign autgoraphs for hours on end. Its crazy how many people look up to them, and are honored to be in their presence. For a small group of people to feel that way about me is sweet. It was a really great experience. Now she hopes to stick with the Stars for the remainder of the season. San Antonio just lost guard Kayla McBride for the year with a fractured foot.I would love to be here the rest of the summer, Dietrick said.Even if she doesnt last, Dietrick will always have great memories. 6/155 Previous best figures for a New Zealand player on Test debut - Alex Moir against England in Christchurch in 1950-51. Colin de Grandhomme bettered it with 6 for 41 in the first innings of this Test. He is the eighth New Zealand bowler overall to take a five-for on Test debut. He had taken only one five-wicket haul in his first-class career, spanning 83 matches, before coming into Tests.1 Better bowling figures for a player on Test debut against Pakistan than Grandhommes 6 for 41. Kyle Abbott holds that record for his 7 for 29 in Centurion in 2012-13. The only other bowler to have taken a five-for on debut against Pakistan since 2000 is Adil Rashid, who took 5 for 64 last year. No bowler managed a five-for on debut versus Pakistan between 2000 and 2012.2Number of lower totals for Pakistan in New Zealand than the 133 in this match. Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen says a little bit of adversity isnt always a bad thing and tough times can make a team better. If thats the case, the Bulldogs hope the results come sooner rather than later.Theres no denying its been a rough first half of the season for Mississippi State (2-4, 1-2 Southeastern Conference), which has lost three of its last four games, including last weeks 28-21 double overtime loss at BYU.The BYU setback was undeniably frustrating -- especially since Mississippi State led for a big chunk of the evening -- but at least there was some reason for optimism. The Bulldogs were much more competitive than the week before, when they fell behind 35-0 at home before losing to Auburn 38-14.Mullen said the team played physical and hard in the BYU loss, but crucial mistakes -- including personal foul penalties and missed assignments -- are keeping the Bulldogs out of the win column. Some of the silly penalties we had overshadowed some tremendous efforts we had on the defensive side of the ball, but you see some young guys start to make plays and play a little better, Mullen said.Mississippi State appears to have a few winnable games ahead of it, starting with a road matchup against Kentucky (3-3, 2-2) on Saturday. The Bulldogs have won seven straight games in the series dating back to 2009.But Kentucky has played better of late, winning three of its last four.Mississippi State hasnt had nearly as much to celebrate lately.Mullen said he hopes the Bulldogs will do a better job in the passing game against Kentucky after an up-and-down week against BYU. Sophomore Nick Fitzgerald continued his inconsistent play, completing 17 of 36 passes for 214 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. One bright spot was Fitzgeralds short pass to freshman Keith Mixon, who ran 44 yards down the sideline for the Bulldogs first touchdown against BYU. Other than that, Mississippi State struggled to create big offensive plays.Mullen says hes willing to take shots downfield. Its up to his players to execute.I dont think weve decreased the number of shots we have taken down the field, Mullen said. I think weve decreased the efficiency of our shots downfield. I think we have to hit a couple of those.Mississippi States offense is working around the absence of starting running back Brandon Holloway. The senior missed the BYU game because of an ankle injury and his return for the Kentucky game is in doubt.Thats meant larger roles for others like sophomore Aeris Williams, who ran for a team-high 82 yards against BYU. Mixon, who has scored a touchdown in two straight games, and sophomore Malik Dear have also become a bigger part of the offense. Its just opportunities for someone else to take and step up, Dear said. Brandon (Holloway) is a great player and we are going to try to do what he does best and to fill his role. But Brandon can only be Brandon, Keith can only be Keith and Malik can only be Malik. So we are going to go out there and do what we can do.-----Follow David Brandt on Twitter: www.twitter.com/davidbrandtAP . AP College Football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org .
