Tampa Bay manager Joe Maddon has a message for the opponents of expanded replay in baseball, the critics who talk about the human element and the pace of the game. Go all the way, he said. "I really challenge them to go back and throw away all this new stuff. Microwaves, throw it away," Maddon said. "Take away all these comforts of this technology thats sprung up over the last how many years to make our lives better. To just bury your head in the sand and just reference old school all the time to me is a really poor argument." While Maddon was ready to dive straight into expanded replay, much of baseball offered a tentative endorsement of Thursdays proposal for increased video review options for next season. Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz, a member of baseballs replay committee along with former managers Joe Torre and Tony La Russa, said 89 per cent of incorrect calls made in the past will be reviewable, but he did not provide a list. "Im all for getting calls right. Thats a good thing," Twins catcher Joe Mauer said. "I really havent seen the changes that are going to be made, so I really dont have an opinion on that. But to make the game better, thats what were all striving for." A 75 per cent vote by the owners is needed for approval, and the players association and umpires would have to agree to any changes to the current system. But most players and managers seemed pleased while waiting to learn more about the new system. "Im all for it, reviewing the plays," Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. "I am, and how we do it, Im not set in a certain way, but I think its a good thing. I think most managers are all for it, too, and I think most umpires. Its all about getting it right so Im excited to hear this has a strong possibility to be part of the game." Umpires have come under increased scrutiny following several missed calls this season. Managers will be allowed one challenge over the first six innings of a game and two from the seventh inning until the completion of the game. Balls and strikes are not reviewable, and challenged calls are settled by a crew at MLB headquarters in New York City, which will make a final ruling. The amount of challenges and the emphasis on the last part of the game drew the attention of several managers. "I just dont like the idea that the earlier part of the game is considered less important than the latter part of the game," Maddon said. "Thats all. I know weve lost games in the first inning. You could lose games in the second inning." Royals manager Ned Yost thinks three challenges is too many. "Its more than we need," he said. "Im sitting back and thinking, probably in the last two weeks or three weeks, I cant think of three balls I would have challenged, but its still nice to have the ability to be able to do it." A manager who sees a call he feels is incorrect can file a challenge with the crew chief or home plate umpire. Only reviewable plays can be challenged. Non-reviewable plays can still be argued by managers, who can request that the umpires discuss it to see if another member of the crew saw the play differently. Reviewable plays cannot be argued by the manager. Challenges not used in the first six innings will not carry over, and a manager who wins a review will retain it. The home run replay rules currently in use will be grandfathered in to the new system, Schuerholz said. "I think the biggest thing is that everybody watching the game knows at home -- you know, because they replay it -- so we want to make sure the calls get right," said pitcher C.J. Wilson, the union rep for the Angels, "and weve had some instances where the calls havent been right over the last couple years. "Thats why weve gone to the replay thing, is because the seasons coming down to the last game for some of these teams that are in the wild-card race or whatever," he said, "and if they lose a game because of a replay that doesnt happen, you can imagine how upset they would be." One of the biggest concerns is slowing down the game. Schuerholz said with a direct line of communication between the central office and the ballparks the expectation is that replays under the new system will take 1 minute, 15 seconds. Current replays average just over 3 minutes. Some said the use of replay could have a positive effect on the pace because it will prevent many on-field arguments. "I like the fact that I dont have to argue with the umpires, because Im not a good arguer to begin with," Yost said. "I lose my mind, I start using bad language, and you dont get anywhere. ... I just think this is going to be a much, much better system." While that marathon wont soon be erased from our memory, it brings up an ongoing concern.Year after year, more and more people embrace the idea that Wimbledon should abandon one of its signature traditions and join the US Open by adopting the final-set tiebreaker in all matches.The theme was especially pronounced at this tournament for two seemingly disparate reasons: First, the horrible, wet weather of the first week forced some players to play as many as three days in a row. Asking a player to rebound from a 19-17 win one day to compete again the following day (as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to do) doesnt add to the Wimbledon mystique -- it besmirches it.Reason No. 2: This fortnight saw some brilliant tiebreakers. The one Roger Federer eked out in overtime (11-9) in the fourth set, staving off a match point along the way, is a shining example. It would have provided a rousing, electric ending to that long match.It is very cool if it goes 12-all, 14-all, 18-all, 20-all, Federer said, contemplating the tiebreaker issue after landing in the quarterfinals. As the great Brian ODriscoll assessed Charles Piutaus performance for Ulster against Exeter Chiefs at the weekend, he summed up the wingers unique skillset with four, short words: He just has everything. When ODriscoll says that about a player, you listen.Since Piutau moved to Wasps last season and then took up his two-year contract with Ulster, he has been the standout player in European rugby. This is how Piutau came to be at Ulster; a man driven by faith, family and a competitive streak born from wanting to emulate his older brother, Siale.The vision of the black jerseyPiutau was 13 when Pastor William Holas vision changed his life.The youngest of 10 siblings, Piutau was always a competitive sort. He grew up in Auckland, living in a garage adjoining the family house with his four brothers. There was a healthy competitiveness between them -- dinner time was a case of get in early or you miss out, according to Piutau.They grew up playing rugby in the back garden with Jonah Lomus name frequently called out as they pretended to be their heroes.Lomu had a big influence on the young Charles. As a student at the same school as Lomu -- Wesley College -- from an early age he stared at the honours board which included the results of the 1989 athletics championships. One name sits aside the list as the winner of the 100 metres, 100 metre hurdles, 200 metres, 400 metres, discus, shot put, javelin, long jump, high jump and triple jump: J. Lomu.His brothers took rugby seriously but just one of the four -- Siale -- made it professionally. Charles was talented as a youngster but it took Holas vision to map out his life, one which had a pre-destination about him one day becoming an All Black.We were at a youth camp in Auckland and the pastor was praying for a few of the youth and he saw a vision of me playing in a black jersey, Piutau told ESPN. So I asked him: Is it an All Blacks jersey? He said yeah. From that day onwards everything was aligned and I knew I was to pursue that black jersey.My parents backed me to have a career in sport and that was really helpful. When you are Wesley College, everything helped with my development.It was older brother Siale who had perhaps the greatest influence on him. They played together at Wasps last year but as Siale started making the grade at Counties Manukau in about 2006 Charles watched on and dreamt of similar success.Hes six years older than me so I was always able to speak to Siale, share advice on what it takes and things like that, Piutau said. That was really helpful having him there to help me with my rugby career. I remember in high school he was sponsored by Lotto so I got lots of hand-me-down old gear.But there was a time when I was playing rugby and I took it for granted. He used to tell me that I needed to work hard and never let up or take my position as guaranteed. He told me to stay calm and back myself. He also helped me with some positional stuff which he could pass on to me as an outside back.Siale cut his teeth in the centres but it was the wing where Charles found his home. He was brought into the Auckland Rugby system and watched in awe as Joe Rokocoko, Brent Ward, Isaia Toeava caused havoc on the flank. At a younger age Carlos Spencer and Rupeni Caucaunibuca caught his imagination as did the late, great Lomu and in 2012 he finally achieved his dream of running out for the Blues in Super Rugby.All Blacks honours followed -- he made his debut in June 2013 against France -- but he missed out on a spot in their 2015 World Cup squad and then came the call from Ulster.A leap into the unknownFor his whole life he had lived in and around Auckland, been near his brothers but he felt he needed a change.It took a lot of thinking and I talked to a lot of people close to me, Piutau said. I felt I needed to get out of the comfort zone, get out of New Zealand and try something new, try something different.I am the youngest of 10 and I had find my own two feet. I was talking to the recruitment officer at Ulster and the potential of the club was a huge draw card.The plan was to spend one last season with the Blues but the NZRU prevented him from playing in the 2016 Super Rugby competition so he took up a short-term offer at Wasps.He was a revelation at the Aviva Premiership side and the experience was further enhanced by them drafting in Siale to play in the same backline as Charles. Wasps were understandably keen to keep him but he stuck to his word and joined Ulster.I heard a lot about the Friday night games from the fans on social media. The experience is exactly what they told me it would be like, its brilliant, Piutau said. The crowds here are so vocal. I enjoyed Wasps but it was only ever going to be short-term.Ulster are now enjoying the benefits of Piutaus unrivalled talent, both in attack and defence.The intercept and visionOne of the most remarkable pieces of individual skill this season did not lead to a try, or contribute to points on the board but instead it was brilliant defensive intuition.The reward was much bigger than the risk, Piutau tells ESPN, remembering the passage of play in Ulsters win over the Scarlets back in September where his gamble to step out of the line to intercept a certain try-scoring pass saved his side. I know there was a high chance of them scoring a try so I just backed myself and went for it.Defensively sound he may be, but it was his work in attack which caught ODriscolls eye at the weekend. He has an unbelievable ability to find space with the subtlest of steps.Physically it might feel like you are separated but as a fullback you are covering space, Piutau said. You are trying to make sure the opposition cant see space to kick to so you are covering if anyone breaks through.At the same time you are working with the wingers so theres a lot of communication happening. Its a busy role. You are more involved with the game than just talking and covering space.But then you get a chance. So looking at a defender, you can see what direction they are about to head in through their shoulders. If its the forwards you know you have a chance of getting around them with pace and footwork.Ulster supporters will enjoy that pace and footwork for what they hope is a while longer.He is relishing life in Belfast and watching on proudly back in Auckland are his four brothers Hakaei, Robert, Siale and Andy.
