LONDON -- Six years ago, history was made at the All England Club when John Isner played a record-setting match against Nicolas Mahut that ended 70-68 in the fifth set. While that marathon wont soon be erased from our memory, it brings up an ongoing concern.Year after year, more and more people embrace the idea that Wimbledon should abandon one of its signature traditions and join the US Open by adopting the final-set tiebreaker in all matches. The theme was especially pronounced at this tournament for two seemingly disparate reasons: First, the horrible, wet weather of the first week forced some players to play as many as three days in a row. Asking a player to rebound from a 19-17 win one day to compete again the following day (as Jo-Wilfried Tsonga had to do) doesnt add to the Wimbledon mystique -- it besmirches it.Reason No. 2: This fortnight saw some brilliant tiebreakers. The one Roger Federer eked out in overtime (11-9) in the fourth set, staving off a match point along the way, is a shining example. It would have provided a rousing, electric ending to that long match. It is very cool if it goes 12-all, 14-all, 18-all, 20-all, Federer said, contemplating the tiebreaker issue after landing in the quarterfinals. It goes further and further. [But] the chances get slimmer and slimmer to win that next round. They can make a compromise and make a tiebreaker at 12-all. Play another six service games each. When Federer speaks, people tend to listen. All England Club officials told ESPN.com that while there has been no significant discussion of abandoning the tournaments current format, its certain to be a topic of conversation after this edition of the event is over. However, Wimbledons organizing body is also keenly aware of its image and is dedicated to keeping its players content. Thats become a more pressing issue this time around.Scores of players were frustrated by the rain and the havoc it played on scheduling. A number of them resented the way officials forced them to play in a mist or light rain, under what they felt were dangerous, slick conditions -- all in the interest of getting matches done. In moments of anger, Gilles Simon and Serena Williams even threatened to sue if they were hurt chasing balls on the slick turf.Extended fifth sets didnt help. Wimbledons reputation as the players tournament was in serious jeopardy this year.Heading into Fridays semifinals, six mens matches had gone into overtime. Ten of the womens best-of-three encounters also ran long. Unsurprisingly, Isner was party to the longest match so far in this years competition when he faced Tsonga and, for the ninth time at a major tournament, went beyond 6-all in the fifth.Isner has a personal stake in seeing a fifth-set tiebreaker, but hes tired of making the case.Ive said it a bunch, he said after the Tsonga match, but I cant do anything about it. Its fine. I have no clue [if it will happen].Tsonga chimed in: For me, its 50/50. Of course, for us its good to finish it, because the winner will play another match and continue.Tsonga, who ultimately beat Isner, was lucky. He dodged a bullet in his match the following day when Richard Gasquet retired with an injury after they played just four games in the fourth round. One sign of the times: Last year, the International Tennis Federation made a comparable break with tradition when it adopted the fifth-set tiebreaker for Davis Cup ties. That will surely come up when the All England Club takes up this issue later this year. Miami Dolphins Jerseys .
