TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Florida State will enter Atlantic Coast Conference play off to one of the best starts in school history. The 21st-ranked Seminoles got a career-high 19 points from Terance Mann on Monday as they took control in the second half for a 76-68 victory over Samford.Florida State has won eight straight and is 12-1 for only the third time, matching the 1988-89 and 2008-09 squads.Even though the Seminoles are ranked and off to a strong start, Mann said that might not mean a lot in a couple months unless they can play well in the conference. You cant make the tournament winning 12 games. We know we have to keep winning, Mann said. We havent done anything really in five years. We just got to keep getting better and prove to the world that were here and were good.Mann, whose previous career high was 18 last season against Georgia Tech, is on a roll. The 6-foot-6 sophomore guard is averaging 14.7 points and 6.7 rebounds in his past three games along with going 17 of 23 from the field.Samford led for most of the final five minutes of the first half before FSU scored the final five points to go up 31-27. Xavier Rathan-Mayes, who scored 15 points, had the key shot with a 3-pointer at the buzzer that bounced in off the rim.The Seminoles scored the first six points to start the second half, pushing the lead to double figures. Florida State led by 17 with 6:12 remaining after a 12-2 run.FSU shot 42.2 percent from the field (27 of 64), which was its second-worst shooting game of the season. Its a learning experience and preparing us for the ACC, Rathan-Mayes said. We did a good job of relying on our defense. I dont think there are too many nights where we are going to struggle like that offensively.Christen Cunningham led the Bulldogs (7-4) with 16 points while Demetrius Denzel-Dyson added 14.We gave ourselves chances but we battled, Samford coach Scott Padgett said. Ive got a play card with 150 plays but I think we ran just one tonight. It was tough to drive inside.BIG PICTURESamford: The Bulldogs are 17-9 in nonconference games over the past two seasons but are 0-2 this season against teams currently ranked in the Top 25 (they lost to Cincinnati 70-55 on Nov. 23). Samford was picked to finish seventh in the Southern Conference but might exceed expectations based on how it has done so far.Florida State: The Seminoles struggled in the first half for the second straight game before pulling away in the second half. If it werent for blowing an 18-point, second-half lead on Nov. 24 against Temple, Florida State would be undefeated going into the Atlantic Coast Conference part of its schedule.HOT IN DECEMBERFlorida State has won 12 straight games in December and 16 of its last 17. It has also won 17 of its last 18 non-conference games in the month.TOUGH DAYEach teams leading player struggled. Florida States Dwayne Bacon, who came into the game averaging 17.2 points, scored 14 but was 4 of 15 from the field.Samfords Wyatt Walker, who is averaging a double-double with 13.7 points and 11.6 rebounds, was held scoreless in the first half. He had eight points and four rebounds.UP NEXTSamford: The Bulldogs host Florida A&M on Thursday. It is the first of two more nonconference games before they open Southern Conference play Dec. 31.Florida State: The Seminoles begin ACC play Dec. 28 against Wake Forest. Much was expected of the 2016 NRL Grand Final but it was always going to be a big ask to live up to the hype following the Broncos-Cowboys classic 12 months before - and Western Bulldogs AFL fairy tale in Melbourne little over 24 hours earlier. The Sharks showed no sign of Grand Final nerves in the first half; they had the Storm under pressure through the majority of the opening 40 minutes were rewarded with points to lead 8-0 early.A lot was written about the perceived lack of big-game experience in the Sharks team, but two of their most experienced -- James Maloney and Luke Lewis -- relieved the pressure by combining in attack on several occasions to have the Storm defence constantly on the back foot.Melbourne enjoyed a light breeze in the first half but that was all that favoured them. Cronulla mauled Melbourne in the opening 40 minutes, forcing the Storm to make 209 tackles to their 134, and the Sharks deserved their 8-0 lead; but it should have been a lot more. The Sharks had led 16 times at the break this season, winning 13 times, but Jesse Bromwich tested their mental strengh with a try in the 51st minute to incredibly drag Melbourne back into the match and cut Cronullas lead to 8-6.Storm centre Will Chambers delivered another devastating blow with a try in the 64th minute to put Melbourne in front for the first time, but Christian Welch conceded an unnecessary penalty that set up Andrew Fifita to score for a 14-12 Cronulla lead with nine minutes to play. It was a lead they never relinquished as they claimed their maiden premiership.Key Moments -6th min?- Storm winger Marika Koroibete high shot lands him on report and James Maloney kicks Sharks 2-0 ahead.14th min - Sharks five-eighth James Maloney line break has Luke Lewis heading for the line but pulled down centimetres short15th min - Sharks captain Paul Gallen sends Ben Barba to the tryline for the first try of the match.20th min - Sharks centre Jack Bird suffers arm injury and looks restricted but bravely plays on.35th min? - James Maloney kicks for Sosaia Feki but Suliasi Vunivalu saves a try by getting a hand to the ball.50th min - Jesse Bromwich muscles Melbourne back into the match with a try to cut Cronullas lead to 8-6.66th min - Storm hit the lead through a try to Will Chambers after a heavy defensive workload at the other end.69th min - Andrew Fifita scores try after Christian Welch swinging arm on Chad Townsend gives Cronulla more possession.78th min - Will Chambers fields a ball but fails to see an unmarked Cooper Cronk on the inside that wouldve won the match. The DifferenceEnthusiasm and energy was a glaring difference for the Sharks. Whatever they may have lost on experience was made up for in their sheer determination to claim victory.James Maloney and Luke Lewis played major roles, and the Storm found it extremely difficult to nullify their contribution.Maloney constantly had Melbourne on the back foot while Lewis was a relentless threat in attack with his offloads and support of the ball carrier. Lewis also worked overtime in defence to continually frustrate the Storms dangermen.Melbourne did incredibly well to fight back after a mountain of defensive work to lead with 15 minutes to play, but Cronulla, as theyve done all season, found a way to win.Telling tacticsCronulla were too fast for Melbourne in all facets of the game. Their speed at the play the ball was too much for the Storm to handle, and nullified the impact of Melbournes wrestle.Everything the Sharks did in attack revolved around Maloney, and, with the Storm constantly on the back foot, the speedy five-eighth proved a real handful for the best defence in the NRL.The defensive workload in the first half drained Melbourne of a great deal of gas, with Cameron Smith alone posting 71 tackles, but they somehow found more to give in the second half -- only to have their dream shattered.Grand Final debutantsThere wasnt a bad player on either side despite Cronullas dominance. None of the debutants were overawed by the occasion, but the seasoned campaigners such as James Maloney and Luke Lewis for the Sharks who provided the guile; Cameron Smith and Jesse Bromwich did likewise for the Storm.Where to nowMelbourne;?Can never be written off but they will lose some crucial players next season, such as Blake Green, Marika Koroibete and possibly others. They will be top-eight contenders again but might not reach this stage next season.Cronulla:?Somehow we dont think they care right now. Celebrations could quite possibly continue well into pre-season next year, but the nucleus of their side are young so, like the Storm, they could be top-eight chances. George Groves moved closer to a fourth shot at a world title after earning a unanimous decision victory over Eduard Gutknecht at Wembleys SSE Arena. The 28-year-old provided the latest demonstration he has rediscovered his finest form when securing his fourth win of 2016 via scores of 119-110, 119-109 and 119-109 on the three judges scorecards.Victory leaves him in contention to challenge for the vacant WBA super-middleweight title early next year. He has lost each of his previous three world-title fights but his latest performance suggested he has the momentum required to finally succeed. As early as the opening bell, the 34-year-old Gutknecht - born in Kazakhstan but who fights out of Germany - sprinted to Groves and landed a right hand before receiving a counter. For much of the opening rounds each maintained a high work-rate while being hittable, but Gutknechts ability to close the distance restricted the power in Groves punches.Gutknecht is known for an amateur victory over the feared Gennady Golovkin without threatening such a level as a professional. He took numerous big rights from Groves in the sixth, seventh and eighth rounds, displaying good resistance even if it suggested he was being worn down.Already clearly behind on the scorecards, another intense assault in the ninth saw a significant cut open by his swollen left eye that further reduced his chances of going the distance.Impressively, he instead succeeded in taking further punishment as the aggressive Groves continued to land with powerful combinations and counters, surviving to the final bell and inevitably dropping the decision. The victory also means Groves has four wins from four since appointing Shane McGuigan as his new trainer after fighting under Paddy Fitzpatrick for the last time last year when losing to WBC champion Badou Jack.Defeat by Jack had followed two further unconvincing performances after he had impressed despite losing twice to Carl Froch, but succeeding in finally winning a world title next year could prove exceptional timing.Long-term rival and IBF champion James DeGale faces Jack in the unification fight in January that will establish the 168lb-divisions leading fighter.Should DeGale and Groves continue to win, a rematch six years after their first professional fight would become one of the biggest British match-ups that could be made in 2017.There was earlier a surprise defeat for Northern Irish middleweight Conrad Cummings, who lost a split decision via scores of 96-94, 96-94 and 94-96 to Germanys Ronny Mittag. The loss was the first of Cummings career, and also the first ever as a professional trainer for McGuigan, whose reputation has grown since Groves and David Haye joined Carl Frampton among his stable of fighters. Also on the undercard, 2012 Olympian Andrew Selby secured his seventh win from seven by stopping Jake Bornea of the Philippines in the seventh round. After the fight, Gutknecht fell ill in his changing room and was taken out on a stretcher to hospital. TSNs Darren Dreger reported last week that former Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel was also among the candidates who were believed to be scheduled for an interview. Gillis did not disclose who else is under consideration for the posting. "I think this is a great opportunity for us to change direction and I want to speak to everybody and hear their views about what they feel we need and how they could contribute to the Vancouver Canucks," Gillis told the TEAM1040. &qquot; Its an interesting process, and its an opportunity to learn a lot about people that are good quality coaches.dddddddddddd" Gillis also said that there is no timeframe for hiring a new head coach, and the team will take its time to speak to all of its candidates. The Canucks general manager did say though that he believed that a new coach will be in place prior to the July 5 opening of the free agency period. Gillis also characterized the June 30 NHL Draft as "strong" and said the Canucks would be interested in trading up from their 24th pick if the opportunity presented itself. "I think (the Draft) is going to be busy," said Gillis. "Theres going to be a lot of jockeying around - I think theres going to be some trades (around the league), but again you never know how busy its going to be." ' ' '

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Ryan Fitzpatrick tried to quickly move on from one of the ugliest performances of his career.Throwing six interceptions certainly stings. It still did a day after a 24-3 loss at Kansas City. Its a hard day for me to come in today after, pretty much, we lost that game because of my performance, Fitzpatrick said Monday. We dont really need to pin it or try to put it on anything else. I think that was pretty evident. To walk in today and have to face the guys, its not an easy thing to do, but at the same time, Ive got to be the same guy every day as a leader, as a player, and just come in.The veteran quarterback was one of a very few players in the locker room during media availability. He shouldered the blame for the defeat, as he did after the game, but also insisted he wasnt going to dwell on it anymore. Not when the Jets have a matchup at home with Seattle to prepare for.I think theyre all easy to get over when you have a game the next week coming up, he said. But it was so bad, and there were so many poor things on my part that happened in that game that you want to put it behind you as fast as you can.Fitzpatrick finished 20 of 44 for 188 yards and tied a franchise record -- shared by Joe Namath, who did it three times -- with his six-pack of interceptions. One of the picks was returned for a touchdown, and he had three red-zone throws intercepted in a span of five passes.I had the two forced balls in the red area, and that cant happen, Fitzpatrick said. But we did some good things up front that maybe were overshadowed by all the turnovers. But obviously the lesson from that game is you cant turn the ball over, especially that many times, and expect to win games in the NFL.Fitzpatrick and the Jets (1-2) know theyve got to turn things around quickly with the Seahawks coming to town, even with Russell Wilsons availability uncertain with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee. The combined record of New Yorks next four opponents is 8-4 -- Seattle (2-1), Pittsburgh (2-1), Arizona (1-2), Baltimore (3-0) -- so things could spiral quickly, long before the Jets even get to their bye in Week 11.I think we KNOW who we are, coach Todd Bowles said. We just have to BE who we are.Things were looking way up for the Jets last week after a 37-31 win at Buffalo in which Fitzpatrick threw for 374 yards and was selected the AFCs offensive player of the week. That seemed so long ago after the clunker in Kansas City, with some fans and media wondering if the Jets confidence in Fitzpatrick was shaken. Its the NFL and Im a pro, and Ive played with some good quarterbacks and some not-so-good quarterbacks, and youve just got to move on, said left tackle Ryan Clady, in his first season with New York after eight in Denver. Youve just got to move on and try to get better the next week.Ive got his back, so Ill still be out there blocking and trying to make sure nobody hits him.Fitzpatrick didnt address the team as a whole, but said there were plenty of side discussions with different players trying to work through the loss.Any time you lose like that, Bowles said, you have to have a `Come-to-Jesus meeting.Bowles made his displeasure clear after the game when he repeatedly used a vulgar word to describe the teams performance. When asked what his message was to the team when it met Monday morning, Bowles laughed before saying he mentioned accountability and where the Jets need to be, and what to do to get better. When asked what made him chuckle, Bowles gave a sly grin and said: You dont want to know.Whatever Bowles said to his players made an impact. So much so, that Fitzpatrick thinks its something the Jets could build on moving forward.I thought the way that he delivered the message today was great, the quarterback said. I thought it was something that was necessary, and potentially a turning point in the season in terms of the focus that hopefully we come with after this game.Clady said Bowles wasnt necessarily fiery, but very direct, adding that the coach isnt really a yeller. The biggest thing with him, I think, in the locker room is hes really respected and his message really rings true with the veteran guys, Fitzpatrick said. Hes a guy thats played the game, thats been through a lot of adverse situations, as a player and coach. So for him being able to speak from experience on both sides of it, I think is really helpful for the players to respect him and to listen to it.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Nuggets Jerseys 2020 . After a season-long battle of wits and skills he was one hard contact or reliability issue away from absolute glory or miserable failure. He now becomes only the fourth British driver, out of 143 whove tried, to win multiple World Championships, joining an elite list along with Jim Clark, Graham Hill and Sir Jackie Stewart. At 33 wins he is now fifth on the all-time list, with an impressive 11 in this season alone. Media talk now speculates about sports personality of the year in the UK and even suggests Sir Lewis Hamilton by New Year. No wonder he was patting and willing his car to the finish line whilst maintaining just enough pace to cover off the highly-impressive Felipe Massa in the Williams, who kept the mighty Mercs in view pretty much all race. The Sky Sports F1 team joined Lewis Hamilton in the Mercedes garage to discuss his World Championship victory. Hamilton deserved the World Championship, of that there can surely be no debate. His racecraft and speed, delivered virtually error-free all season, was mighty and he never gave up when he was repeatedly many points behind his team-mate. Instead, he simply dug in and believed in his skills and personal approach and qualities. Yes of course he had a dominant car, but Nico Rosberg summed it up perfectly when he magnanimously declared that the best man won. VOTE: 25 moments for 25 years Pick your favourite moment from 25 years of Sky Sports I went to find Rosberg after the race so that I could personally tell him just how much I respected that he drove his car to the finish line despite so many technical problems. His team even offered by radio the chance to end the agony of falling back through the field and being lapped, but he soldiered on rather than parking and whinging. He once again proved to be the master of qualifying, but after the race he openly recognised that he needs to find another personal gear on race day if hes going to beat Lewis next year. That process starts immediately in the post-race test in Abu Dhabi.Weve learned this year that heres a much more steely edge to Rosberg than his fresh-faced blonde locks suggest. He can be quite cunning, and clearly massively fast and consistent but can he ever match Hamiltons sheer naturally gifted race pace and killer instinct? Will he ever be as hungry and determined? Well find out in 2015, and hell need to raise his game because Lewis will be on fire now and full of confidence. Ted asks what makes the Mercedes W05 one of F1s most dominant cars.dddddddddddd A word for Team Brackley in conjunction with Brixworth and Stuttgart. The Mercedes was probably the most dominant car of the past few decades. It wasnt the most reliable but the engine and chassis were a marriage of exquisite technical detail and beauty. We only fleetingly saw just how good that car really could be if needed, such as after the Safety Cars in Bahrain and Singapore, and Rosberg effectively non-stopping in Russia as he drove back through the field. They won a record-breaking 16 races. Two more outstanding stars of 2014 were Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas, both of them showing that they could have challenged for the world title in a Mercedes. Ricciardo continued until the final lap to make Vettel looked ordinary this season and its no wonder Sebastian felt the time was right to high tail it to Ferrari. Red Bull have a mighty duo in Ricciardo and Kvyat for next season.Despite a lacklustre year and no Mercedes engine, Red Bull still had the momentum and quality to finish second in the World Championship. Williams had the better all-round package and if Massa wasnt involved in so many scuffles in the first half of the season they may have even finished higher than third in the constructors. But Felipe very much played his part in the welcome revival of the great Williams team along with many others who helped steer them back on course. And Bottas is a class act with a very bright future. Britain’s most raced F1 driver Jenson Button chatted to Simon Lazenby as speculation about his future went into overdrive ahead of the 2014 finale Jenson Button finished the season on especially good form as McLaren improved their car relatively speaking too. He completed more race laps than any other driver, and his wheel-to-wheel action with, and subsequent beating of, Fernando Alonso in Abu Dhabi was skilful, classy, and personal. After 15 years JB has had a very good innings with victories and a World Championship. Hes successful, healthy, wealthy and with no doubt the world at his feet in areas outside of F1. But if hes not on the grid next year, then as I said in commentary, half of the drivers who are there wouldnt hold a candle to his speed and skill.I wont go the sympathy route though because I dont believe in it and F1 is a brutal business. Jenson got into F1 because somebody else lost their ride, thats how it works. But he still has plenty to offer, although the quality of the new kids is very high as Ive already mentioned.MB ' ' '

GAP, France -- Hurtling too fast for comfort down a twisty, turning foothill of the Alps, Tour de France leader Chris Froome faced a high-speed choice between risk and reward. The Briton knew that 10 years previously almost day for day on exactly the same descent, Joseba Beloki shattered his leg, elbow and wrist bones rounding a corner too fast and Lance Armstrong plowed into a field to avoid the prone Spaniard howling in pain. So Froome wanted to go easy. Trouble is, Alberto Contador didnt. Against his better instincts, Froome chased after his Spanish rival who rode hell for leather on the treacherous downhill with asphalt made gooey and slippery by the July heat. Just like Armstrong, flirting with disaster nearly cost Froome the Tour. Contador crashed as he rounded a right-hand corner, forcing Froome to swerve around him off the road, onto the grass and to put a foot down to stay upright. Unlike Contador, who bloodied his right knee, Froome escaped with just a fright. Still, this drama on Tuesdays Stage 16 proved a point that Froome and his Sky team have made time and again: despite his big lead, Froome wont savour victory until hes on the cobbles of the Champs-Elysees in Paris on Sunday. "One second you could be going for the finish and about to win a race and the next youre lying in a ditch somewhere, with a broken bone," Froome said. "I knew it was the descent where Beloki crashed so I was purposefully laying off a little bit and trying to take it easy but at the same time also trying to keep touch with the Saxobank guys who were really pushing the limits." By that, Froome meant Contador and his Saxo-Tinkoff teammate from the Czech Republic, Roman Kreuziger, who are third and fourth in the overall standings but more than four minutes off the lead. Opportunities for them to claw back time are fast running out. The finish line in Paris is now just 668 kilometres (415 miles) and five days away. To their credit, they arent simply accepting defeat but are harassing Froome all the way. If Froome wins, the way his rivals have repeatedly tested the British rider over the three weeks should give him the extra satisfaction of a victory hard-earned. Stage 16 wound from Provence past vineyards, lavender fields and villages clinging to hillsides to the town of Gap, a staging post for what promises to be a grand finale in the Alps for the 100th Tour. For a long while, it seemed that the 168-kilometre (104-mile) trek to Gap from Vaison-la-Romaine, a charming town with old ruins near the Mont Ventoux where Froome won on Sunday, would be one of those Tour stages that dont amount to much. Apparently keeping their powder dry for the Alps, Froome and other main protagonists allowed 26 riders -- none of them a podium threat -- to escape far ahead. The stage winner, Rui Costa, later emerged from that group, riding away on the days last climb, a 9.5-kilometre (6-mile) long ascent to Col de Manse, and then zipping down to Gap. Although the Manse climb is less arduous and less steep than the Ventoux, where Froome blasted past Contador, the Spaniard and Kreuziger used to it test the Briton and his Australian wingman, Richie Porte. Several times, Contador tried accelerating away. Kreuziger did, too. But Porte and then Froome alone wouldnt let them get away. To cool the asphalt, authorities doused the top of the climb with water. But Porte said the road down from there was sticky and slippery -- just as it was in the heat wave of 2003, when Belokis back wheel slid away from him on a bend, hurling him to the ground. Armstrong went on to win that Tour -- only to have that and all six of his other victories in cyclings premier race stripped from him last year for doping. On Tuesday, touching their brakes caused wheels to slip, Porte said. "All of us had a bit of a moment coming down there, losing the front wheel, back wheel," he said. Yet Contador was flying, with Froome in his wake. Rounding a sharp right-hander, "the bike got away from me," Contador said. "It was really difficult. In normal conditions I wouldnt have slipped like that, but it was very difficult terrain," said the 2007 and 09 champion, who was stripped of his 10 title for a failed doping test. "Sometimes you have to go for it, whether its at the start or the end of a stage." Froome said Contador "was taking too many risks." "All teams are starting to get desperate now and theyre taking uncalculated risks," he said. "In my opinion it was a bit dangerous from Alberto to ride like that, its not good." Worryingly for Froome, theres worse to come. Thursdays Stage 18 not only includes a double ascent to the ski station of Alpe dHuez, with its 21 hairpin bends, but also a harrowing descent that several riders have voiced concerns about. Having seen that Froome wasnt completely comfortable chasing after Contador on Tuesday, the risk now is that his rivals could try to unsettle him again on Thursdays downhill from Col de Sarenne. "It is a very dangerous descent. The road surface is not great," Froome said. "And there arent any barriers on the corners, so if you go over the corner then you will fall down a long way. Its a dangerous descent and I hope the riders are aware of that, that they dont take risks like they did today." ------ AP Sports Writer Jerome Pugmire contributed. Nike Air Max 95 Günstig Kaufen . Having completed 400 back-to-back marathons, the 401st left Ben Smith unable to put his feelings into words, let alone perspective. He had navigated the length and breadth of the United Kingdom in his remarkable 401 Challenge. In the process he raised over £250,000 for anti-bullying charities Stonewall and Kidscape, inspiring countless folk young and old.His journey to that point was a turbulent but ultimately triumphant one. In his own words, sheer will, grit determination, stubbornness and pig-headedness saw him complete the 401 back-to-back marathons to raise awareness over bullying. But he is far from done. The motivation behind 401Ben Smith was 18 when he tried to kill himself. From a Germany-based RAF family, he went to boarding school in England at the age of 10. The previously adventurous kid turned into a quiet, shy and reclusive boy. He was bullied, physically and mentally, and felt ashamed and trapped. When he turned 13 he changed schools, hoping for a fresh start, but the bullies followed him. The switch coincided with him coming to understand that he was gay, yet he felt unable to be himself because of the strict views of his religious school. When he hit 18, he reached breaking point.I thought, I cant do this anymore, he tells ESPN. It wasnt a cry for help, it was a genuine want to not be here any more so I tried to take my own life.I felt Id failed at not being able to do that so I made that choice to be happy -- happy in inverted commas. I hadnt even come out, I hadnt had any experiences. So I had a warped view of reality on who I was supposed to be. That set off a string of events where I played it straight for the next 11 years until I was 29.A lifestyle of 70 hours-a-week work, drinking and cigarettes took its toll and aged 29 he was sat in Bristol Royal Infirmary having suffered a TIA [Transient ischaemic attack -- a mini stroke]. It was his eureka moment, but one which did not come with an immediate understanding of what to do next. He put a flipchart up in his bedroom on which he verbally vomited all emotions, thoughts and goals. He was persuaded to go and visit a local running club, but those teenage demons and doubts came back. When I walked through the doors it was like I had regressed back to school, he said. I thought people were going to look and laugh at me, call me names and highlight how I didnt belong there.I was terrified, but I managed to stick with it.Everyone was so welcoming and I walked and ran two miles. It was like Id run a marathon, won a gold medal. I figured out what confidence was. I ran a little bit further, made friends, got clarity. It gave me an opportunity to express myself.Running struck a chord with Smith and within six months he had run his first half-marathon. Then came the 2013 Brighton marathon and in 2014 he ran 18 marathons, spread all over Europe. He enlisted a mind and body personal trainer and found himself in running. I was experiencing a cool life -- my self-esteem was rising, I was independent. I was more open, I was coming to terms with my sexuality so I was much more congruent. I came out to my parents and they were absolutely fine with it.There was a belief that I could be who I was and could do anything I put my mind to, thats where the idea came from to run back-to-back marathons.End of the road?It was day 284 of the 401 Challenge when it looked like the dream was over. He sat in Aberdeens Royal Infirmary in complete devastation.Back in early 2015 he did seven back-to-back marathons in the U.S. from St. Louis down to New Orleans, encountering 72-year-old Larry Macon who has over 1,600 marathons to his name. They talked about beating the world record of 365 back-to-back 26.2-mile runs and Smith suggested completing 400. Macon reminded him he needed a victory lap, and the 401 Challenge was born.Smith set a target of raising £250,000 for his two charities, but on day 284 -- his feet had already pounded 7,414 miles -- sat in north Scotland, the prognosis was grim.He had fractured a vertebra. The back pain was originally blamed on the umbilical hernia he had picked up in Alnwick a few days before, but when he was in Aberdeens Royal Infirmary on day 284 he was diagnosed with spondylitis. That was when I broke down, he said. I couldnt stand up straight, it left me crooked. I was like a question mark and my spine was shaped like a corkscrew. There was also the fracture between L4 and L5 which had irritated the disc and left me with sciatic pain.Jamie Murphy, the ex-Manchester City footballer and now renowned physiotherapist, set to work on him and remarkably, 10 days later he was back on the road. Hed lost 262 miles in his enforced pause, but he ran an extra 30 or even 35 miles each day to make it up. By day 393, he was back on track. The next chapterIt is October 5. Having completed his victory lap which took him from Bristol to his hometown of Portishead and back -- complete with a stop off for a burger and pint -- he crossed the finishing line.Over 401 days it felt like had covered every blade of grass in the UK; 9,485 other folk joined him at various stages, running alongside him, sending a message of defiance to bullying. He also visited 101 schools, promoting the anti-bullying message. Earlier in the day his fundraising hit the £250,000 mark.Amid the flashing cameras and media demands as mile 10,506 was ticked off, in his 22nd pair of trainers, Smith turned to his project manager and the overwhelming emotion translated into a simple question: I turned to him and all I said was, so thats that then?.The welcoming pint of Thatchers brought some clarity and it signalled the start of the next chapter.A three-month cooling down period is his next task as Smith enters more uncharted territory. A university has been enlisted to monitor the psychological and physical aftermath of this remarkable feat -- his addiction to the endorphins will need close attention as, without those, there is the risk of slipping into depression. The tapering plan involves back-to-back half-marathons, then daily 10km runs next month and 5km runs in December. His supersonic metabolism needs to be managed and a 6,500-calorie diet reduced.Smith wont stop running but his reserve energy will be driven into the 401 Foundation -- itll work with people, building confidence and dealing with mental health issues -- an events company which will put on an annual 401 marathon and motivational speaking with 350 schools on the waiting list.Despite having made history, and inspired thousands, he isnt one to sit around. Hes only just getting going. When I crossed the finishing line it was a culmination of all the hard work and sacrifice but also the people Id met, he said. It was like we were a family that were standing up against something that had affected so many others. It was like an expression of my soul. It was spine-tingling. But I dont feel I have done something that special, Ive just done something I love. But now, just a couple of days on ... Im beginning to think it might be a little bit of a big deal. ATLANTA -- Forget about Dwight Howards trouble at the line and Atlantas off night from the field. The Hawks settled down in time to secure their first 3-0 start in five seasons.Howard had 18 points and Kyle Korver and Dennis Schroder scored 17 apiece, leading Atlanta to a 106-95 victory over the Sacramento Kings on Monday.Every Atlanta starter scored in double figures, and the Hawks held Sacramentos DeMarcus Cousins in check after he averaged 30 points in the Kings first three games. He finished with 14 points and 12 rebounds. The Kings scored 37 points in the third on their way to an 81-79 lead heading into the final period. But the Hawks closed with a flourish.Third quarter we didnt keep our composure, fourth quarter we did, Atlanta forward Paul Millsap said. That team wants to make the game ugly. If you get caught up into that, then youll have a 37-point quarter, and we got caught up into it.Howard went 8 for 20 from the line, but also contributed 11 rebounds and four blocked shots. Millsap had 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds.Rudy Gay scored 22 points for Sacramento (2-2), and Matt Barnes had 14. Ben McLemore finished with 12 points. The Kings were whistled for 34 fouls, and the Hawks went 29 for 47 at the line overall.Sacramento led 83-81 in the fourth quarter when Millsap made a foul shot and Kent Bazemore connected on a 3 to give the Hawks the lead. Korver helped Atlanta hold on with another 3 with about four minutes left. The Kings made just 6 of 18 shots in the final period.Where it ran back away from us was we fell in love with the jump shot, and stopped getting in the paint, Sacramento coach Dave Joerger.Millsap helped with the defense on Cousins, and also finished with eight assists, three steals and a blocked shot.Hes a special player, Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer said. That third quarter I think got to him a little bit, and him not being on the court obviously impacts us.TIP-INSKings: Cousins became the Kings career leader with 246 double-doubles. Chris Webber had 245. He was limited in the preseason, and missed the first two regular-season games. The Hawks re-signed forward Ryan Kelly, who was in camp with team after playing three seasons with the Lakers, and waived center Edy Tavares.FAMILIAR FACEFormer Hawks forward Josh Smith attended the game.COME ON, REF!Last in the first quarter, Joeger pleaded to official Karl Lane: My man over here (the scorekeeper) is running out of lead! HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- The congratulatory messages started rolling in long before Jimmie Johnson had finished his obligatory championship photos. Larry Bird. Mia Hamm. Michael Phelps. Mario Andretti. Drew Brees. The Chicago Cubs. The list of dignitaries -- and the friends and neighbors who toilet-papered his North Carolina home overnight -- shows just how significant this latest milestone is for Johnson.Greatest of all time? Maybe. He certainly deserves to be in the conversation.Johnson joined Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the only drivers in NASCAR to win seven titles with a race-winning run Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. His record-tying championship came in a bizarre year for Johnson and his Hendrick Motorsports team, and on a day that did not belong to the iconic No. 48 Chevrolet until the final lap of the race.Hendrick Motorsports was not good this year, and never found the speed to match Joe Gibbs Racing and its fleet of Toyotas. Johnson, for most of the season, was never even mentioned as a title contender. The organization buckled down, improved its cars and got Johnson in position to race for his seventh title. Then he did the rest. When Carl Edwards wrecked Sunday night to essentially lose the championship, Johnson charged through the melee and found himself suddenly leading the two remaining title contenders. On a night when hed started last -- his team was found to have manipulated the body of his car after it had passed inspection -- and clearly wasnt as good as the other three contenders, he had somehow lucked into the lead.He still had to earn the win, though, and did it with the restart of his life to hold off Kyle Busch and Joey Logano. He led one lap and it was the one that mattered. He is probably the most underrated champion in this sport, said his crew chief, Chad Knaus. He is a fantastic, fantastic individual, an amazing race car driver. Most people in the situation we were in just in would crumble. He didnt even waver. He knew what he needed to do. He knew what the demands were on him at that point in time, and he made it happen.Weve got a great team. Weve got a great owner. Weve got a great everything at Hendrick Motorssports.dddddddddddd But the fact of the matter is the real spark in this whole thing is Jimmie.A fatigue perhaps set in when Johnson reeled off five consecutive titles. Fans didnt seem to appreciate his dominance, certainly not the way they revered Petty or Earnhardt.Almost each Johnson championship was met with a collective yawn, when they should have been celebrated for their unique achievement.Johnson, at 41, is the youngest driver to win seven. Petty was 42 when he did it in 1979, while Earnhardt was 43 in 1994. He also collected his seven titles in a 10-year span. Earnhardt needed 14 years to do it, while Petty did it in 15 seasons.Johnsons 80 career victories rank seventh all time, one spot ahead of Earnhardt.I think the five in a row was pretty phenomenal, and I think winning seven and tying seven is pretty special, said team owner Rick Hendrick. Its special to see him tie those guys. I think its good for the sport, and I think it draws a lot of attention to our sport. We had Gatorade, had a lot of guys like Peyton Manning telling him how neat it was, and Serena Williams. I think its going to be a big shot in the arm for not only Jimmie but our sport.Johnson will likely add to his totals. With retirement still a ways off, he has a chance to win eight titles, and as he drank a beer and ate a slice of cold pizza in a champagne-soaked firesuit, he was already being asked about the possibility of eight.I dont know what the chances are, but lets go, he said. Im so excited to put that in front of myself and the team has a hurdle to get over and an accomplishment to achieve. I had a lot of fun racing for the sixth. This one and the calm nature and the way we went about business and got it done only gives me more confidence for the future.I honestly feel like Im playing with house money. I never aspired to be famous. I never aspired to be a champion. I just wanted to race. I think it makes us really dangerous, and I look forward to the challenge of trying to get number eight.---More AP auto racing: www.racing.ap.org . ' ' '

But the 1977 West Point graduate, President-elect Donald Trumps choice for Army secretary, has maintained his service ties since leaving active duty. While he has steadily built a financial empire -- listed 374th on Forbes Magazines top 400 with a net worth of $1.8 billion -- he also has poured money and time into the military academy. Viola was a key donor for the creation of West Points Combating Terrorism Center and has supported cadet programs. And as owner of the National Hockey Leagues Florida Panthers, he has sent the team to West Point for training, and there are several West Point graduates and military veterans working in the front office. If he is confirmed by the Senate, Viola will take over as civilian head of an Army struggling to recoup and recapitalize after more than 15 years at war. Under current plans, the Army would continue to downsize from a high of about 570,000 at the peak of the Iraq war, to 450,000 by 2019.Legislation not yet finalized for the next budget year would stall that drawdown at 476,000 soldiers, which is a bit higher than the current size of about 470,000.As secretary, Viola would be responsible for all management, budget, acquisition, personnel and base issues for a vast network of about 150 permanent installations around the world. Army soldiers are deployed in about 140 countries.Viola would replace Eric Fanning, who became secretary this year after spending the last eight years in various leadership positions across the Army, Navy, Air Force and Defense Department, including acting secretary of two services and chief of staff for DDefense Secretary Ash Carter.dddddddddddd Fannings tenure gave him extensive experience navigating the enormous and complicated Pentagon administrative and fiscal infrastructure -- a key challenge for any successor.A Brooklyn native, Viola paid $250 million for the Florida Panthers and is a past chairman of the New York Mercantile Exchange. He is founder of several businesses, including Virtu Financial, an electronic trading firm. Viola has a stake in the company worth $1.5 billion, based on figures the firm sent in April to regulators.Virtu is a so-called market maker, acting as a middle man selling stocks and other assets to people who want to buy them and buying from people who want to sell. The company operates in the somewhat controversial high-speed trading industry in which firms use super-fast computers and algorithms to spot fleeting opportunities in stock and bond markets. The practice accounts for most stock trading during the day. Advocates say it provides more trading opportunities. Critics say it gives an unfair advantage to a few firms, and could lead to more spikes and plunges in prices. In a statement Monday, President-elect Donald Trump praised Viola, whose father came to the U.S. from Italy, as living proof of the American dream and someone who has long been engaged with national security issues.Violas was the first member of his family to attend college. He trained as an Airborne Ranger infantry officer and served in the 101st Airborne Division. CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Nevada took a step closer to becoming the home of Raider Nation on Friday, with state lawmakers narrowly approving a hotel tax increase that would put $750 million in public money toward an NFL stadium partly funded by billionaire casino mogul Sheldon Adelson.Raiders owner Mark Davis thanked the legislature in a statement. All parties have worked extremely hard to develop and approve this tremendous stadium project that will serve as a proud new home for the entire Raider Nation, Davis said. However, it is far from settled that the Raiders will move from Oakland to Las Vegas, a city that is only now ending its drought of professional sports after landing an NHL expansion team over the summer. Oakland still holds out hope it can keep the Raiders from leaving a second time, and relocation needs the blessing of three-fourths of NFL team owners, who historically have shunned Las Vegas because of its legalized sports betting. The matter is expected to be addressed at next weeks fall owners meetings, but there will not be any votes. The Raiders cannot apply for relocation until Jan. 15.Still, proponents who envision Raiders games in Sin City by 2020 have a persuasive bargaining chip: the prospect of a sparkling, 65,000-seat domed venue close to the Las Vegas Strip, backed by $650 million from Adelson, $500 million from the Raiders ($200 million of that from an NFL loan) and a $750 million public investment.A cadre of lobbyists for the project strained over the past week to overcome conservative anxiety over a tax increase and liberal objections to subsidizing one of the worlds richest men, eventually securing the bare minimum of Assembly votes to hit the required two-thirds majority. Republican Gov. Brian Sandoval, who views the $1.9 billion stadium as a way to ensure Las Vegas continued dominance in tourism, is expected to sign the deal Monday in Las Vegas. It is truly exciting to see our gaming industry, labor unions and small businesses come together with broad support for these important projects, Sandoval said in a statement. This is the beginning of the next chapter of southern Nevadas continued dominance in tourism, conventions and hospitality. Its exciting, said Andy Abboud, chief lobbyist for Adelsons Las Vegas Sands, after the financing deal passed its toughest vote Friday. But this is really about jobs, and I think at the end of the day, people saw this as a fantastic economic stimulus package.Sandoval called lawmakers into a rare special session to consider the deal, which raises a 12 percent hotel tax in the Las Vegas area by up to 1.4 percentage points to fund the stadium and a convention center expansion. Casino industry heavy hitters from Wynn Resorts, MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment urged lawmakers not to miss the game-changing business venture backed by their competitor, Adelson.Construction workers from the Laborers Union festooned the legislative building in Carson City with silver-and-black flags, pleading with lawmakers to give them back jobs that dried up in the recession and threatening to sabotage the campaigns of Democrats who voted against the deal.Eventually, the Senate voted 16-5 and the Assembly voted 28-13 for the bill. Opponents included both Republicans and Democrats, many of whom did not want the legislature to put new tax revenue toward a stadium instead of bolstering Nevadas bottom-ranking public education system and mental health services. We are funding luxury items before were taking care of our needs, said Democratic Assemblywoman Teresa Benitez-Thompson, who opposed the deal. I dont let that happen in my home and Im not going to let it happen ... in this house. The public contribution will be larger in raw dollars than for any other NFL stadium, although the publics share of the costs -- 39 percent -- is smaller than for stadiums in cities of a similar size, such as Indianapolis, Cleveland and Cincinnati.Critics pointed out that some outside economists, including Stanford professor and sports economist Roger Noll, have panned the deal as a boondoggle based on outlandish financial expectations. Defenders of the stadium say Las Vegas outsized tourism economy, with 150,000 hotel rooms and 42 million visitors each year, is different than other markets that are more dependent on locals. If we take the visitor component out of our economic impact model, it is negative, said economic analyst Jeremy Aguero, who helped develop the deal. He said he didnt disagree with analyses that other cities have been burned in stadium deals, but its inappropriately applied here.Proponents project 451,000 new visitors will come to Las Vegas as a result of the stadium, ushering in $620 million in economic impact. Thats based on the stadium hosting 46 events, including 10 NFL games, six UNLV football games, and a variety of concerts, sports and other events. The deal puts $420 million toward renovating and expanding a dated convention center, which proponents say will help Las Vegas accommodate the largest conferences and keep its edge against competitors such as Orlando. The two projects are projected to bring 25,000 construction jobs and 14,000 permanent jobs to the Las Vegas area.Tourists, mostly, will finance the improvements. They can expect to pay about $1.50 more per night on their hotel bill for an average-priced room on the Las Vegas Strip.ESPNs Adam Schefter and The Associated Press contributed to this report. RIO DE JANEIRO -- The Latest on the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (all times local):9:50 p.m.The Italian mens pursuit team has been added to the track cycling program at the Rio Olympics after the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the decision to bar Russias squad from competing.Kiril Sveshnikov, Dmitry Sokolov and Dmitry Strakhov appealed to CAS after they were included in the McLaren Report that detailed state-directed doping across numerous winter and summer sports.Their pursuit teammate Sergey Shilov was cleared to compete in Saturdays road race and presumably could have ridden on the track, while teammate Viktor Manakov had never been implicated.Cyclings governing body, the UCI, tells The Associated Press that it consulted with the IOC before reallocating Russias vacated team pursuit spot to Italy.Italian riders Filippo Ganna, Liam Bertazzo, Simone Consonni and Francesco Lamon will fly to Brazil this weekend to join teammate Elia Viviani, who is already in Rio to contest the omnium. The qualifying round of the mens team pursuit is Thursday.---8:30 p.m.The Russian Sailing Federation says one of its sailors has been cleared to compete at the Olympics despite having been implicated in a report on alleged doping cover-ups.Pavel Sozykin had initially been ruled out last month by World Sailing after his name featured in World Anti-Doping Agency investigator Richard McLarens report into Russias alleged scheme to hide hundreds of failed drug tests. However, World Sailing dropped its opposition to Sozykin on Wednesday, saying it was not clear whether he would have been eligible for a ban even if there had been a cover-up.The Russian Sailing Federation said in a statement Friday that the International Olympic Committee has given final approval to Sozykin, meaning Russias full team of seven sailors can compete in Rio.---7:10 p.m.A small group of protesters have been stopped by heavily armed security that appeared to fire tear gas to keep them from reaching the site of the opening ceremony for the Rio Olympics. The protesters got within about 2 kilometers (1.5 miles) of the Maracana stadium on Friday. As they tried to get closer, security pushed them back, setting off clashes.Television footage showed two protesters setting fire to a yellow shirt carrying the logo Rio 2016 and worn by staff working at the Olympics. It was not clear how many protesters were detained, though footage showed at least one young man being placed into the back of a police van. There have been consistent small protests in Brazil in the run-up to the Olympics, much of it aimed as the torch relay as it circled the country of 200 million.Brazil is in the midst of its deepest recession since the 1930s, employment is above 10 percent, and the local currency has tumbled in value against the dollar in the last year.---6 p.m.A bad virus couldnt keep Alice Ingley of Australia from shooting arrows.Ingley spent part of Thursday morning in a clinic with the virus. On Friday, she finished 58th in archerys qualifying round at the Rio Olympics. Not bad for eating only some crackers and nibbling on a piece of toast.Ingley said she knew she would make it to qualifying, but just didnt know how many arrows she would be able to shoot. Ingley ended up shooting all 72 arrows in the qualifying round. But she will stay away from teammates for one more night just so they dont catch anything from her.A member of the Australian womens water polo team was in isolation a few days ago after being stricken with a gastrointestinal virus.---5:45 p.m.The CEO of the Russian Cycling Federation says three of the countrys cyclists have been cleared to race at the Olympics after appealing their exclusion over doping. The three had been barred from competing under International Olympic Committee rules on Russia because they previously had been banned for doping. But that IOC rule was declared unenforceable by a sports arbitration panel Thursday.Even though the three Russian cyclists have been allowed to race, only two-time road racing medalist Olga Zabelinskaya appears likely to compete.Tour de France stage winner Ilnur Zakarin cannot race due to a confluence of circumstances, federation CEO Yuri Kucheryavy tells The Associated Press in text messages.Another rider, track cyclist Sergei Shilov, could be out because three of his teammates in the pursuit are facing exclusion on different doping-related allegations.---5:30 p.m.The competing was the easy part for three Russian archers in comparison to waiting to see if they would even be allowed at the Olympics. The International Olympic Committee recently approved the entry of 271 Russian athletes amid several anti-doping groups calling for a complete ban.Overall, more than 100 Russians have been excluded, including 67 in track and field, over allegations of state-sponsored doping in Russia ahead of the Rio Games.Of course, there were some worries, Russian archer Ksenia Perova said through a translator Friday after the womens qualifying round at the Sambadrome. But they (decision makers) believe in common sense.Tuiana Dashidorzhieva led the way for the Russians in qualifying by finishing fifth. Inna Stepanova was 16th and Perova wound up 17th.---5:05 p.m.Hours before the opening ceremony, the Greek Olympic committee has announced the first positive doping test of the Rio Games. The committee says an unnamed member of the Olympic team failed a doping test in July in Athens. The Greeks say the athlete has left the Olympic Village.Dozens of athletes have failed doping tests at the last two Olympics, most caught in recent retests of stored samples. The IOC stores doping samples for 10 years so they can be retested when new methods become available, meaning drug cheats who escaped detection at the time can be caught years later.---4:30 p.m.The Olympic torch relay has reached the end of its protest-disrupted journey to Rio de Janeiro. The relay that began with a ceremonial lighting in Ancient Olympia, Greece, in April ended in Rios Flamingo district on Friday afternoon. The flame will next be used to light the cauldron in the Maracana Stadium in Fridays nights opening ceremony. There was a late detour for the torch on Friday, with protests and heavy crowds forcing organizers to shift the relay away from part of the famed Copacabana beach before it headed to Sugar Loaf Mountain.---4:25 p.m.Theyre cutting it very close at Rio de Janeiros Olympic sailing venue.A temporary ramp to launch boats at Rios Marina da Gloria collapsed a week ago and, with sailing opening on Monday, its still not fixed. Organizers said it would be ready on Friday, but that wont happen.Darryl Seibel, a spokesman for the governing body of world sailing, says good progress is being made and the body is increasingly optimistic.Rios Olympic sailing event has drawn unwanted attention because of severe water pollution in the Guanabara Bay venue. Rio treats about half of its waste, dumping the rest into its bacteria- and virus-filled waters.Seibel says the temporary ramp should be finished over the weekend. If its not, all the boats must be launched from one permanent concrete ramp.Seibel says we could operate with only one, although thats far from ideal, and its not what were expecting to do.---3:40 p.m.Want to watch the opening ceremony in the United States when it kicks off in Rio? She says on Twitter that shell still be rooting for Brazil even if she cant attend in person. Her predecessor and mentor, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who led the Brazilian efforts to bring the first Olympics to South America, said hes not even planning to watch it. His spokesman Jose Chrispiniano said the former president will instead be at a rally of his Workers Party in his hometown in the greater Sao Paulo area. The honor of kicking off the games will instead go to interim President Michel Temer, who said he expects to be loudly booed at Maracana stadium. In 2009, before the largely unknown Rousseff ran her first campaign, she was one of the 50,000 people celebrating on Copacabana beach after Rio beat Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago to host the event.--2:45 p.m.Chris Brooks remarkable resurgence will reach its peak on Saturday when the captain of the U.S. mens gymnastics team competes in the all-around.The 29-year-old Brooks, a first-time Olympian, will do all six events for the Americans as they try to earn a spot in Mondays eight-team final. The format changes up to three-up, three-count for the final on Monday.---2:20 p.m.Leaders of countries who are in Brazil to promote bids for the 2024 Games discussed terrorism threats Friday ahead of Rios opening ceremony.French President Francois Hollande says Paris and other cities bidding to host future Olympics need to be able to protect themselves, and Hollande says France has experience in organizing and protecting major events. More than 200 people have died in France in the last 18 months in terror attacks, but Hollande said these were not attacks on major organized events like the European Championship soccer tournament, which was held around France in June and July.Italian Premier Matteo Renzi says holding the Olympics in Rome would be an answer to terrorists trying to cower people into a life of fear.Speaking in an interview with two international news agencies, including The Associated Press, Renzi said that if the terrorists hate music, we will invest more money in music. If they hate soccer or other sports, we believe this is our identity.Paris and Rome are bid rivals for the 2024 Games along with Los Angeles.---1:55 p.m.Protests and large crowds have forced the Olympic torch relay away from Copacabana. The torch relay was due to pass by Rio de Janeiros famed beach ahead of Fridays opening ceremony.Earlier, U.N. WASHINGTON -- With a lineup that was already sputtering, it was no surprise the New York Mets failed to bust out against Nationals ace Max Scherzer.Daniel Murphy homered twice, tormenting his former team yet again, and Washington completed a three-game sweep of the Mets with 4-2 victory Wednesday night.New Yorks offense did little against Scherzer (9-5), who allowed two hits with 10 strikeouts over 7 1/3 shutout innings. Were just not even giving ourselves chances, said Mets manager Terry Collins, who earlier in the day called it a game his team needed to win. After taking an early lead in Mondays series opener, New York went 23 innings without scoring before James Loneys two-run homer in the ninth off Shawn Kelley. The Mets have lost four straight and fallen six games behind first-place Washington in the NL East. Awaiting them is a four-game series against the major league-best Chicago Cubs to begin an 11-game homestand.Obviously, you wanted to come in here and have different results, outfielder Curtis Granderson said. Youve still got a lot of games to play plus a lot of games against this team and everybody else in our division.Scherzer retired 18 in a row before Brandon Nimmos single in the eighth and finished with at least 10 strikeouts for the fourth straight outing.Murphy homered off Logan Verrett (3-5) in the second for a 1-0 lead and golfed a two-run drive in the eighth against reliever Sean Gilmartin. The second baseman matched his career high with 14 homers as Washington won its fourth in a row.Hes doing the damage against everybody, Collins said. Weve just got to make better pitches. You cant miss on the inner half of the plate to Dan Murphy right now. Logan hung a slider and Gilly got a changeup down and in.Murphy is batting .428 (15 for 35) with four home runs and 11 RBI against New York. He signed a $37.5 million, three-year conttract with Washington last offseason after spending his first seven seasons with the Mets and powering them into the World Series last year with a record-setting postseason.ddddddddddddIts just obvious he wants to beat them up, Scherzer said.Kelley got four outs for his fourth save. He threw a called third strike past Nimmo with a runner on second to end it.Scherzer walked Kelly Johnson in the second, the same inning in which Asdrubal Cabrera registered New Yorks first hit. The Mets didnt reach base again until Nimmos hit on the final pitch from Scherzer, who left to a standing ovation.Granderson entered as a pinch hitter and singled off reliever Oliver Perez, giving New York two baserunners.Kelley, Washingtons fourth pitcher of the inning, whiffed Alejandro De Aza with the potential tying runs in scoring position to end the eighth.Making a spot start because Steven Matz was pushed back a day, Verrett lost his fifth straight decision. He allowed two runs and four hits with four walks over five innings.I felt like I kept us in the game, gave us a chance to come back and win it, Verrett said.Yoenis Cespedes struck out three times against Scherzer.THE GRANDY MAN CANGranderson was a late scratch from the starting lineup one day after being removed from Tuesdays game with right calf tightness. He said after the game hes day to day.TRAINERS ROOMMets: RHP Noah Syndergaard, who struggled in Mondays series opener, confirmed he has a bone spur in his elbow. NFL Nation reporters assess the top storylines to watch Friday for every team.NFC East | NFC North | NFC South | NFC West AFC East | AFC North| AFC South | AFC WestNFC EASTDallas CowboysAs the Cowboys slow play their approach for a backup quarterback, rookie fourth-round pick Dak Prescott will take the second-team snaps when Tony Romo is available and the first-team snaps when the veteran sits. The Cowboys like how Prescott has developed since joining the team, especially coming from a spread offense. He needs to become more accurate with his throws and make faster decisions, but coach Jason Garrett has praised Prescotts presence and poise so far. Its doubtful the Cowboys will go into the season with the rookie as Romos top backup, but?the Cowboys are pleased with his development. -- Todd ArcherNew York GiantsRookie Sterling Shepard continues to be the star of Giants training camp. Day after day hes making play after play. The second-round pick made several big catches downfield on Thursday. Already hes becoming a favorite of quarterback Eli Manning. Its possible we could get to see Shepard, Odell Beckham Jr. and Victor Cruz work together on Friday. Beckham is inching close to a return following a leg injury suffered on Sunday. -- Jordan RaananPhiladelphia EaglesInjuries are suddenly an issue for the Eagles as next weeks preseason opener approaches. Left tackle Jason Peters (quad) and safety Malcolm Jenkins (hamstring) went down during Thursdays practice. Guard Brandon Brooks (hamstring) and running back Ryan Mathews (ankle) were hurt before practices began. That leaves the Eagles with four starters injured; none appears to be major, but the team is still shorthanded. -- Phil SheridanWashington RedskinsRedskins running back Matt Jones didnt practice Thursday because of a sore knee, but he said hes fine and that his legs just needed rest. Though the Redskins havent done any live hitting, making it tough to get a feel for the backs, they have been pleased with Jones improvement. He has been much better at knowing angles to take on runs, but a big test this preseason will be his pad level through the hole and his ability to hold on to the ball. -- John KeimNFC NORTHChicago BearsThe story at Bears camp continues to be wide receiver?Alshon Jefferys minor hamstring injury, which kept him off the practice field Thursday. Jefferys recent history -- he missed seven games in 2015 with calf, groin, hamstring and shoulder problems -- makes the development newsworthy, even though coach John Fox downplayed the severity of Jefferys latest setback. The Bears have only three practices left in Bourbonnais (they have?a workout scheduled at Soldier Field on Saturday), meaning there is a chance Jeffery wont see more time there. The situation is worth monitoring. The Bears want to be extra cautious here. The last thing they?need is for Jefferys hamstring to linger. -- Jeff DickersonDetroit LionsThe Lions defensive line has been one of the most impressive units in camp thus far, particularly since the group continues to make plays even though it?cant take guys to the ground. While that might change Saturday during the teams mock game at Ford Field, a bunch of players on the first and second unit have consistently made plays in individual drills and team periods. The player the Lions need a jump from, though, is Devin Taylor. He has shown he can make big plays and will have a larger role this season as a starter. The last eight games of the season, six games, he made a ton of plays for us and showed up a significant number of times, said Lions coach Jim Caldwell. Hopefully we can keep him on the same trajectory. -- Michael RothsteinGreen Bay PackersThe Packers will not practice on Friday. Instead, theyll have what coach Mike McCarthy calls their STAA Program (Soft Tissue Activation and Application), which consists of massages, yoga and other preventative maintenance designed to reduce the frequency of muscle-pull injuries. Instituted in 2014, it has been a Friday staple during the regular season ever since -- and McCarthy might want to take part, too, given how he and other Packers staffers will be hustling to the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday evening. McCarthy said the Packers will have their normal Saturday in-season practice before flying to Cleveland, where theyll land around 4:30 p.m. McCarthy, general manager Ted Thompson, quarterback Aaron Rodgers and others will then bus from Cleveland to Canton to see Brett Favres induction ceremony. I just found out thats a little longer ride than I anticipated, McCarthy said of the 60-mile trek. -- Jason WildeMinnesota VikingsThe Vikings continue their annual hunt to find a safety who can play next to Harrison Smith. Andrew Sendejo has gotten the first look there, but Mike Zimmer said the Vikings will take a longer look at Michael Griffin. If the Vikings find a safety that can play center field, as Zimmer put it, they can do more with Smith in their defense. -- Ben GoesslingNFC SOUTHAtlanta FalconsNow that veteran pass-rusher Dwight Freeney has officially joined the Falcons, the question is, how many snaps will he play when?the regular season begins? Falcons coach Dan Quinn said it will depend on the opponent and situation, of course. The 36-year-old Freeney is ready for whatever. I love the game and I love to play, Freeney said. Im one of those guys youre going to have to pull me off the field. ... So if its 18 snaps, then its 18 snaps. If its 30 snaps, its 30 snaps. If its 45, 50, theyre going to have to get me an IV, but Ill still go out there and then still play. -- Vaughn McClureCarolina PanthersKeep an eye on defensive back Bene Benwikere to see where he lines up when the Panthers hold their FanFest practice at Bank of America in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Friday. Coach Ron Rivera penciled Benwikere in as a starting every-down corner during the offseason, but Benwikere began camp on PUP as he continued to rehab the fractured ankle he suffered late last season. Benwikere returned to the field Wednesday, but?he?has spent most of his time working at nickel where he played most of the past two years. He actually worked with the third team at nickel a few times. -- David NewtonNew Orleans SaintsThe Saints had a couple of physical, full-contact team periods in Thursdays practice, something coach Sean Payton said will continue to pop up in the coming days. Payton said thats one of the things the team wanted to do this year instead of just saving up for a full scrimmage. They also have joint practices scheduled with two different teams in the next two weeks (Patriots and Texans) as Payton has tried to ramp up the competition and toughness in practices. Rookie running back?Daniel Lasco and second-year defensive tackle?Tyeler Davison are among those who have stood out in the physical drills so far. -- Mike TriplettTampa Bay BuccaneersNo, Bucs backup quarterback Mike Glennon wasnt traded, although his absence from practice Wednesday sparked quite a frenzy. He and his wife Jessica on Tuesday night welcomed their first child, a baby boy named Brady. In other news, coach Dirk Koetter has grown tired of answering questions about Cameron Brate getting first-team reps over Austin Seferian-Jenkins at tight end. If he had his way, Koetter said there would be no open practices so he wouldnt have to answer questions like this every day. As far as the tight ends, he said, Right now, Cam is playing better than Austin. End of story, as far as Im concerned. What does Austin have to do? Play better. -- Jenna LaineNFC WESTArizona CardinalsThursday was the first time the Cardinals practiced this camp after having a day off and, by all accounts, the practice picked up steam as it progressed. Coach Bruce Arians kept a close eye on Thursdays proceedings, as did some of the players, because, as linebacker Alex Okafor put it: Theres no time for that if we want to win the Super Bowl. Theres no time for bad practices, especially after an off day. -- Josh WeinfussLos Angeles RamsThe Rams had Thursday off after a late practice Wednesday, and a couple of rookies started to show chemistry. No. 1 overall pick?Jared Goff and wide receiver Michael?Thomas, a sixth-round selection, connected for completion after completion including a few touchdowns. While neither has?cracked the starting lineup yet, the pair gives the Rams a glimmer of offensive hope for the future. -- ESPN.com staffSan Francisco 49ersThe 49ers continue to monitor the quarterback competition between Colin Kaepernick and Blaine Gabbert. Kaepernick finally pushed the ball down the field in Thursdays practice, hitting Torrey Smith for a long touchdown. It could be a sign that hes feeling more comfortable in Chip Kellys offense. Offensive coordinator Curtis Modkins echoed Kellys sentiment that the quarterback competition will go on for awhile with preseason games being key. The competitions kind of really just getting started, Modkins said. Ive seen Kap from afar for a long time. Hes a good player, and I think hes right on track. I think both those guys are really competing. Theyre both doing a good job, so well just kind of see how it goes, and well probably know more once the live bullets start going in preseason. -- Nick WagonerSeattle SeahawksThe battles between the guys up front have been fun to watch every day. The initial messaging, the defensive line and the offensive line have come out to go after it, said coach Pete Carroll. Theyre getting after it. We need to be a physical, tough football team to play the style that weve always played. We have to recapture that when you come back to camp, and were off to a really good start. Carroll threw Michael Bennett?out of practice after a skirmish Thursday. And the coaches have been pleased with the way rookie offensive lineman Germain Ifedi has stood his ground. This will be an area to watch throughout the remainder of camp. -- Sheil KapadiaAFC EASTBuffalo BillsThe Bills will wrap up their week of practice with a morning session Friday followed by an intrasquad scrimmage Saturday evening. With some live tackling possible, the scrimmage will be the first true opportunity to gauge where the running game and run defense stand. Running backs?LeSean McCoy and Reggie Bush figure to each get a few carries, while defensively, the performance of rookies Adolphus Washington and Reggie Ragland?will be stories. -- Mike RodakMiami DolphinsThe Dolphins defense continues to be ahead of the offense by winning most practices, but coaches say its too early to be concerned. Offensive coordinator Clyde Christensen said the offense is making a lot of deposits at once to push the limits. It may look ugly at times now, but Christensen believes the group will click and find their rhythm in time for the regular season. -- James WalkerNew England PatriotsPatriots quarterback Tom Brady has declined interviews through the first seven practices of training camp, but perhaps Friday will break the streak. Brady has yet to speak publicly to reporters about his decision to not pursue further legal action in his Deflategate appeal. As for practice itself, Brady has been the last player to depart each of the last two workouts as he has been putting in overtime. Among his activities: working with resistance bands, holding planks and doing pushups. -- Mike ReissNew York JetsWith Matt Forte (hamstring) expected to miss the first preseason game, and Khiry Robinson (leg) still on the PUP list, the running-back reps will be divided among Bilal Powell, Dominique Williams and rookie Romar Morris. Its a tricky situation because the Jets?have to be careful not to overwork Powell in practice. The others are bubble players, so it doesnt matter. The Jets say theyre not concerned about Forte, yet. -- Rich CiminiAFC NORTHBaltimore RavensRavens backup quarterback Ryan Mallett continues to struggle in camp. His biggest problem has been accuracy. Hes throwing behind receivers and over their heads. This puts even more pressure on the Ravens to make sure Joe Flacco is ready for the season opener. Flacco has looked excellent despite coming off season-ending knee surgery. Itll be interesting to see how much action Flacco sees in the preseason. The Ravens could play it safe, sitting Flacco in the preseason opener and playing him sparingly in the second one. The focus has to be getting?Flacco to the regular-season opener as healthy as possible. -- Jamison HensleyCincinnati BengalsIts all about patience in Bengals camp these days as Cincinnati waits?for several key players to get back from injuries. One important defender, linebacker Vontaze Burfict, already is easing back into the mix after coming off the non-football injury list Thursday. That wasnt the only good news from the day. Tight end Tyler Eifert began rehab on a side field as he looks to come back from a May ankle surgery. Coach Marvin Lewis also believes injured players Darqueze Dennard (ankle) and Tyler Kroft (knee) wont miss any regular-season time. As the Bengals prepare for a simulated game Saturday, their luck may be changing. -- Coley HarveyCleveland BrownsFriday will be an important night for quarterback?Robert Griffin III, as coach Hue Jackson has a live scrimmage scheduled at the teams practice facility. The scrimmage will provide the first glimpse into Griffins development in Jacksons offense. Two other players of note: wide receiver?Corey Coleman, who has looked very good in practice, and running back?Isaiah Crowell, who looks quick and aggressive in the new run-game system. -- Pat McManamonPittsburgh SteelersThe Steelers are not messing around with rookie cornerback?Artie Burns. They are testing the first-round pick?at every turn. They match him up with Antonio Brown early and often in practices, and Burns has struggled much of the time.?Most corners would in that situation. Brown got Burns on a double move at the goal line. Burns issue, however, is more about experience than competitiveness. Burns responded well with an interception in one-on-ones, sniffing out an underneath route with ease. -- Jeremy FowlerAFC SOUTHHouston TexansWith the ball in his hands, Texans rookie receiver Braxton Miller can be electrifying. Its getting the ball in his hands that hes working on during training camp. Miller was a quarterback for most of his career at Ohio State and only played receiver for one season. Mastering the position is a learning process for the third-round pick, but he feels his background helps in understanding his role. Said Miller: Coming from a quarterback mentality from those years at Ohio State, studying the playbook and learning the concepts, it comes pretty naturally for me. -- Tania GanguliIndianapolis ColtsColts center Ryan Kelly?on Thursday missed his third straight practice with a left shoulder strain. Coach Chuck Pagano will address Kellys status Friday, but it would be surprising if the first-round pick out of Alabama played in Sundays preseason opener against the Packers after missing so many days of practice. This is the first setback Kelly has had after taking just about every snap with the first unit during offseason workouts and the first portion of training camp. Jonotthan Harrison has been working with the first unit at center in Kellys absence. Harrison has started 19 games over the past two seasons. -- Mike WellsJacksonville JaguarsThe Jaguars will hold their first scrimmage on Friday, but it might?not include two key members of the offensive line. Center?Brandon Linder is nursing a groin injury and Kelvin Beachum, who is fighting for the starting spot at left tackle with Luke Joeckel, sat out the last two practices. The Jaguars say Beachum?had knee soreness Wednesday and got an additional day off Thursday. They are being very careful with Beachum, who is coming off a torn ACL, because hes the favorite to be the left tackle. -- Mike DiRoccoTennessee TitansJeremiah Poutasi said he got a little work in one team period as the first-team left guard. Quinton Spain has been the starter. Coach Mike Mularkey said Spain has been more hot than cold, but that his bad plays have been doozies. When hes had his mistakes, theyve been pretty significant, Mularkey said. I mean they stand out. Not getting out on some screens, not covering up guys. Other candidates -- Poutasi, Brian Schwenke, Andy Gallik and Sebastian Tretola -- may start to get rotated in sometime soon. -- Paul KuharskyAFC WESTDenver BroncosBroncos coach Gary Kubiak has hinted at it before, but Thursday he finally made it official. In the search for the teams starting quarterback, how things go in the preseason games will have a big impact on who gets the job. Kubiak is testing each quarterbacks knowledge and the ability to get the team in and out of the huddle. He also wants to see how they handle things at the line of scrimmage. But Kubiak put aside any thought that the team would pick a starter without seeing the three -- Mark Sanchez, Trevor Siemian and Paxton Lynch -- handle the business of a game. So, that could mean the Broncos dont name a starter for another two weeks or so. -- Jeff LegwoldKansas City ChiefsThe Chiefs expect new quarterback Nick Foles at practice for the first time on Friday. Foles might need a refresher course, but he should be familiar with Andy Reids offensive system. He played for Reid with the Eagles for one season (2012), and Reid has a well-deserved reputation for helping quarterbacks resurrect their careers.?-- Adam TeicherOakland RaidersFirst-round draft pick Karl Joseph, who tore the ACL in his right knee last fall at West Virginia and missed Oaklands offseason training program while rehabbing the injury, sat out Thursdays padded practice for undisclosed reasons. The strong safety had practiced every day prior to Thursday and spent much of the day working with a trainer in the teams weight room. -- Paul GutierrezSan Diego ChargersAfter three days of fully-padded practices, the Chargers will hit the field in just helmets and jerseys on Friday as they get ready for Saturdays FanFest at Qualcomm Stadium, the teams annual controlled scrimmage. Chargers coach Mike McCoy praised the play of the receivers and defensive backs on Thursday. Well be in shells tomorrow, so I wanted to make sure that I pushed them today and have a championship level of play for an extended time today, he?said. -- Eric D. MILWAUKEE -- The Chicago Bulls wont have to wait long to get another chance at the Milwaukee Bucks.Twenty-four hours after the Bucks handed Chicago a 108-97 loss, the two teams will meet again in Chicago on the back end of a home-and-home series.Chicago came out flat early against Milwaukee and never led in the contest, though the Bulls did manage a late surge before falling for the second game in a row and fifth time in their past seven.I would have hoped we had solved the playing half a game or three quarters of a game, Bulls coach Fred Hoiberg said after his team gave up 25 points on 17 turnovers and went 5 of 19 from 3-point distance. We played the fourth quarter the way you have to play the entire game.Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jabari Parker continued their hot streak for Milwaukee on Thursday, combining for 58 points on 24-of-46 shooting in the victory. They rank first and second in scoring on the team this season. Antetokounmpo, who finished with 30 on Thursday, is averaging 22.3 points, while Parker is adding 19.4 a night. However, coach Jason Kidd says those numbers only tell part of the story. If were just being judged on points, then theyre playing really well, Kidd said. But its not all about points. Unfortunately, thats all you guys write about. Its a team game, but it comes down to winning and doing your job.Kidd was quick to mention that Parker finished with three assists Thursday. The forward is averaging 2.1 helpers per game this season and has been quick to make the extra pass to keep Milwaukees offense flowing.Sometimes it goes unnoticed that he passes the ball as well as Giannis, Kidd said.ddddddddddddStopping those two will be key for the Bulls, who will also need to find a way to limit their turnovers and prevent Milwaukee from enjoying another 11-of-20 showing from beyond the 3-point arc. They made eight threes in the first half; that is not on our scouting report for them to make eight threes, Chicago guard Dwyane Wade said. Then they also got transition points, so they got everything they wanted early in the first half.We are going to have to play better defensively tomorrow against this team.Parker especially is looking forward to facing the Bulls. He grew up on the south side of Chicago, not far from the United Center.Thats the game I circle on my calendar beyond any other game just because Im a kid from the city, Parker said. I grew up watching them, and thats something thats in my pride to try my best against the Bulls. The Bucks are again expected to be without swingman Michael Beasley, who sat out the Thursday game due to a sore foot. With Beasley out, Mirza Teletovic was first off the bench and saw nearly 20 minutes of action. He went 5 of 10 from the field with three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points. It shows our depth, Kidd said. When somebody is down, somebody else has to step up, and Mirza did that tonight for us. He was big. He had some shots he normally makes that he missed tonight, but were going to need that again from him tomorrow night.Milwaukee has dropped five consecutive contests at the United Center. HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A former college basketball star and NBA draft pick whose body was found in the back seat of an SUV in New York last year was killed by two men, including one with whom he lived and raised two girls, prosecutors and friends said.Mark Holdbrooks and David Victor were charged Tuesday with killing 35-year-old Michael Wright, who played for the University of Arizona and was drafted by the New York Knicks. The men were being held on $3 million bail. No information was available on whether they had attorneys to comment on their behalf.Holdbrooks, who lived with Wright in Closter, New Jersey, had reported him missing in November 2015. His body was later found covered by a trash bag in Brooklyn.Prosecutors said Holdbrooks and Victor drugged Wright at the home Wright and Holdbrooks shared. They said the men killed him and loaded his body into Wrights SUV.Wright suffered head trauma, which investigators said was caused by an ax, according to a criminal complaint. He also suffered a cut and puncture wound near his eye.The 6-foot-8-inch forward played for the Arizona Wildcats. The Knicks drafted him in 2001 and waived him before the season started. He went on to play in France, Germany and Turkey.Wright and Holdbrooks lived together in Chicago before moving to New Jersey, according to William Nelson, who coached Wright when he played alongside Kevin Garnett at Chicagos Farragut Academy.Nelson told The Record newspaper that Holdbrooks attended a memorial service for Wright in Chicago in January on what would have been his 36th birthday. He talked about Michael as a loving father raising his kids, Nelson said. He played the part.Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal told The Record that Holdbrooks was arrested Tuesday in Manhattan, where he was living with the two girls and a woman.Dave Paladino, a New Jersey trainer who helped Wright rehabilitate an injury, told WNBC-TV that Holdbrooks said Wright spoke highly of him when he visited their home after his body was found. Its kind of disturbing, now that they have to learn Mark, who was their guardian, is now their fathers murderer, Paladino said of the two girls. Its very disturbing, very tragic. Cheap NFL jerseys China . NSW Swifts will be aiming to thwart the golden touch of their former coach Julie Fitzgerald in Mondays trans-Tasman netball semi-final against the Magic in New Zealand.Seeking a grand final berth against defending champions Queensland Firebirds, the Swifts can set up repeat of last years thrilling title decider. But first they must make history repeat by overcoming New Zealand conference champions the Magic in their semi in Hamilton - the Swifts triumphed 60-52 in the same clash last year.Fitzgerald steered the Swifts to the inaugural title in 2008 and has overseen a Magic resurgence this year after a 1-4 start to the season.Shes a great coach but her people-managing skills are one of her best attributes, NSW Swifts captain and midcourt star Kim Green told AAP.She really gets players and she understands their needs on and off the court.Any team she touches, it definitely turns to gold. The Swifts flogged the Magic 78-50 in Sydney in round two, but Green stressed NSW would face a much stronger and more confident side on Monday. They didnt have Grace Rasmussen in or Leana De Bruin, so they had a completely different lineup to what we will be seeing on Monday, Green said.ddddddddddddTheyve definitely found some confidence, just the consistency of having their marquee players back and healthy.I think that really helps the team to get that consistency and the patterns of play, its really important to have stability. The Magic have had a really good back end to the season, one of the best Ive seen, I reckon.Green said she was now fit enough to play a full game after recently coming back into the lineup following a a knee injury. She said the Swifts had identified a number of things they had to fix in the aftermath of last weeks 63-52 Australian conference final loss to the Firebirds in Brisbane.Having options on court was a really important one for us, Green said.Once youve got the options, you can pick the right choice and all these things start to flow. The Swifts appear to have an edge in the crucial shooting area, where they boast the most accurate percentage of any team in the league, while the Magic have the worst. Rising Pune Supergiants ended a four-game IPL losing streak by recording a comprehensive win over Sunrisers Hyderabad by 34 runs on the Duckworth/Lewis method. After rain delayed the start by an hour, it was the Pune bowlers who did the damage as they restricted Hyderabad to just 118-8 in their 20 overs, Ashok Dinda claiming 3-23 in his first IPL match of the season.Pune had reached 94-3 after 11 overs in reply and were well on course for victory before the rain came down again, Steve Smith having top-scored with 46 not out. With time running out to complete the match, the decision was made to call it off and award the Supergiants a first win since the first game of the season.Hyderabad suffered a sizeable early blow as Dinda had the in-form David Warner caught at backward point for a duck in the first over.Dinda, playing his first IPL game of the season, picked up his second wicket when Aditya Tare (8) played loosely outside his off stump and looped a simple catch to Thisara Perera at cover. Ashok Dinda took 3-23 for the Rising Pune Supergiants Eoin Morgan joined Shikhar Dhawan in the middle but he lasted just two balls before nicking behind off the bowling of Mitchell Marsh as Hyderabad limped to 27-3 at the end of the powerplay. That became 29-4 as Ravichandran Ashwin (1-14) picked up a wicket with his first ball, Deepak Hooda (1) gloving a reverse sweep, allowing MS Dhoni to dive forward and take the catch before Marsh (2-14) had Moises Henriques caught behind down the legside in the following over.Dhawan and Naman Ojha began rebuilding the innings and looked to kick on in the 15th over, the latter hitting the first maximum of the game. However, Dinda returned and made a mess of Ojhas stumps to leave Hyderabad 79-6 with a little more than three overs remaining. Dhawan brought up his half-century with a six over long on and after Bipul Sharma was run out, Bhuvneshwar Kumar added another to take the total past 100.The No 9 hit a further two boundaries before hauling out in the final over as the Sunrisers finished on 118-8, Dhawan unbeaten on 56.Any thoughts the Supergiants had of an easy chase soon had to be revised though as Ajinkya Rahane was caught by Morgan in the first over of the reply, a wicket maiden from Kumar. However, after negotiating a tricky spell against the new ball - Kumar, in particular, was causing problems with his swing - Faf du Plessis and Smith began to push on and took Pune to 71-1 after eight overs.Henriques had Du Plessis (30) caught behind in the 10th over and Dhoni (5) fell soon after, Nehra with the wicket after Tare took a sharp catch at backward point. That was the last action before the rain came down again and brought an end to proceedings to give Pune victory by 34 runs on Duckworth/Lewis.Catch more IPL action on Wednesday at 3pm on Sky Sports 1 as high-flying Delhi Daredevils and Gujarat Lions meet at Feroz Shah Kotla. Now that hes hitting streaking teammates with pin-point passes for easy layups, Love is asserting himself as one of the true superstars in the league. NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Blair Walsh started off a new season the same way the Minnesota kicker wrapped up his last: hooking field goals left. This time, Walsh missed not just one, but two field goals and twice on the second attempt before redeeming himself. He rebounded by kicking four field goals in the second half Sunday as Minnesota beat the Tennessee Titans 25-16.But Walsh also missed an extra point, leaving Minnesota coach Mike Zimmer disappointed and expecting improvement.Hes going to have to kick them through, Zimmer said. Hes our kicker so theres no question about that, but he needs to kick better.Walsh had all offseason to dwell over the 27-yard field goal he shanked in a 10-9 loss to Seattle in the playoffs last January when holder Jeff Locke couldnt spin the ball to get the laces out.The kicker told reporters after Sundays game he would love the first two attempts back and was grateful he got four more chances along with the victory. His first kick from 37 yards missed left, and he badly yanked consecutive attempts from 56 yards short and left just before halftime even after Tennessee tried to ice him with a timeout.I was trying to kill it because I had to get it there, Walsh said of the distance. Thats usually the result when youre trying to do that too. Thats how I looked at them. I dont think theres anything ... more you can take from it than that. Ill have to watch a little bit more to see exactly whats going on.Being mad at himself in the locker room at halftime seemed to help refocus the kicker.dddddddddddd In the third quarter, Walsh got the defending NFC North champs on the scoreboard with a 50-yard field goal.I knew that one was well within my range, Walsh said. And you know, Ive been around a little while. I think I can bounce back and Ive shown that. Like I said, I want to make it smooth from the beginning, and its something I need to work on.He added a 33-yarder and looked back in rhythm until missing the extra point after Eric Kendricks 77-yard interception return late in the third. Walsh was 33 of 37 on extra points last season.Walsh shook off that miss and added field goals of 45 and 30 yards in the fourth quarter. Now in his fifth season, Walsh has five game-winning field goals in his career, and he now has 24 field goals from 50 yards or longer in his career. That ties him with former Minnesota kicker Ryan Longwell and the late Rob Bironas for 15th in NFL history from that distance.Walsh wants to take any drama out of sending him out for any kick. You want to have those kicks that are dead center from the beginning and make it smooth the whole time rather than fighting through it and getting in a rhythm, Walsh said. Were too good to do that, and I know better than to do that.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: https://twitter.com/AP-NFLFollow Teresa M.
