HACKENSACK, N.J. -- A former college basketball star and NBA draft pick whose body was found in the back seat of an SUV in New York last year was killed by two men, including one with whom he lived and raised two girls, prosecutors and friends said.Mark Holdbrooks and David Victor were charged Tuesday with killing 35-year-old Michael Wright, who played for the University of Arizona and was drafted by the New York Knicks. The men were being held on $3 million bail. No information was available on whether they had attorneys to comment on their behalf.Holdbrooks, who lived with Wright in Closter, New Jersey, had reported him missing in November 2015. His body was later found covered by a trash bag in Brooklyn.Prosecutors said Holdbrooks and Victor drugged Wright at the home Wright and Holdbrooks shared. They said the men killed him and loaded his body into Wrights SUV.Wright suffered head trauma, which investigators said was caused by an ax, according to a criminal complaint. He also suffered a cut and puncture wound near his eye.The 6-foot-8-inch forward played for the Arizona Wildcats. The Knicks drafted him in 2001 and waived him before the season started. He went on to play in France, Germany and Turkey.Wright and Holdbrooks lived together in Chicago before moving to New Jersey, according to William Nelson, who coached Wright when he played alongside Kevin Garnett at Chicagos Farragut Academy.Nelson told The Record newspaper that Holdbrooks attended a memorial service for Wright in Chicago in January on what would have been his 36th birthday. He talked about Michael as a loving father raising his kids, Nelson said. He played the part.Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal told The Record that Holdbrooks was arrested Tuesday in Manhattan, where he was living with the two girls and a woman.Dave Paladino, a New Jersey trainer who helped Wright rehabilitate an injury, told WNBC-TV that Holdbrooks said Wright spoke highly of him when he visited their home after his body was found. Its kind of disturbing, now that they have to learn Mark, who was their guardian, is now their fathers murderer, Paladino said of the two girls. NSW Swifts will be aiming to thwart the golden touch of their former coach Julie Fitzgerald in Mondays trans-Tasman netball semi-final against the Magic in New Zealand.Seeking a grand final berth against defending champions Queensland Firebirds, the Swifts can set up repeat of last years thrilling title decider. But first they must make history repeat by overcoming New Zealand conference champions the Magic in their semi in Hamilton - the Swifts triumphed 60-52 in the same clash last year.Fitzgerald steered the Swifts to the inaugural title in 2008 and has overseen a Magic resurgence this year after a 1-4 start to the season.Shes a great coach but her people-managing skills are one of her best attributes, NSW Swifts captain and midcourt star Kim Green told AAP.She really gets players and she understands their needs on and off the court.Any team she touches, it definitely turns to gold. The Swifts flogged the Magic 78-50 in Sydney in round two, but Green stressed NSW would face a much stronger and more confident side on Monday. They didnt have Grace Rasmussen in or Leana De Bruin, so they had a completely different lineup to what we will be seeing on Monday, Green said.ddddddddddddTheyve definitely found some confidence, just the consistency of having their marquee players back and healthy.I think that really helps the team to get that consistency and the patterns of play, its really important to have stability. The Magic have had a really good back end to the season, one of the best Ive seen, I reckon.Green said she was now fit enough to play a full game after recently coming back into the lineup following a a knee injury. She said the Swifts had identified a number of things they had to fix in the aftermath of last weeks 63-52 Australian conference final loss to the Firebirds in Brisbane.Having options on court was a really important one for us, Green said.Once youve got the options, you can pick the right choice and all these things start to flow. The Swifts appear to have an edge in the crucial shooting area, where they boast the most accurate percentage of any team in the league, while the Magic have the worst.
