CHICAGO -- The Los Angeles Dodgers made two changes to their National League Championship Series roster on Saturday, adding left-handed pitcher Alex Wood and infielder/outfielder Enrique Hernandez?for the best-of-7 series against the?Chicago Cubs. The moves increase the Dodgers pitching staff from 11 members in the NLDS to 12, reducing their position players by one since both infielder Charlie Culberson and catcher Austin Barnes will not be active for the upcoming round. The Cubs, meanwhile, will also carry 12 pitchers as they added rookie left-hander Rob Zastryzny, who takes the place of infielder Tommy La Stella.Game 1 of the NLCS is Saturday night at Wrigley Field.Wood gives the Dodgers more left-handed coverage in the bullpen to go along with lefty relievers Luis Avilan, and Grant Dayton. Hernandez gives the club defensive versatility, as well as a way for the Dodgers to counter the one left-handed starter and four left-handed relievers the Cubs will use in the series.Hernandez did not perform well this past season, batting .190 with a .283 on-base percentage. But he batted .423 against lefties last season and has shown flashes of his ability against left-handed pitching this year when he hit two home runs in a April 15 game against the Giants Madison Bumgarner.Hernandez also started a June 1 game against the Cubs and left-hander Jon Lester, hitting a first-inning home run. Lester will start for the Cubs in Game 1 of the NLCS on Saturday. Hernandez also started an Aug. 28 game against Lester and the Cubs, but went hitless in two at-bats.Wood missed most of this season after undergoing an arthroscopic procedure on his left elbow. He began the year as a starter, but he returned to make four relief appearances in September, all scoreless. He gave up just one hit in those four innings of work.Culberson appeared in four of the five NLDS games against Washington, but he did not have a hit in seven at-bats. He had the game-ending home run on Sept. 25 that clinched the division for the Dodgers.Barnes was the Dodgers third catcher in the NLDS. He went 0-for-1, scoring a run as a pinch runner. His main contribution was as a catching insurance policy, freeing up No. 2 catcher Carlos Ruiz to pinch hit. Ruiz ended up going 2-for-4 in the NLDS, delivering the go-ahead RBI single in the seventh inning of the deciding Game 5.Zastryzny went 1-0 with a 1.13 ERA in eight games for the Cubs this year, including 3? scoreless innings at Dodger Stadium on Aug. 27. The Cubs will be carrying three catchers. The move puts four left-handers in the Cubs bullpen. The Dodgers hit .213 against lefty pitching this year. The Associated Press contributed to this report. At 3-0, the game was already wrapped up, but Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Lawrence Thomas ran the length of the field anyway.Max Beister had just put the finishing touch on Victorys third and final goal against Western Sydney on Saturday night, and Thomas got running. He was one of the first players to reach the clubs new signing, laying his great big glove on the Germans head as he celebrated in front of the Victory bench. As someone that started his career feeling on the outer, Thomas knew how much it would mean. From a personal experience when you come into a football team, the best way to feel involved and part of the club is when you have an impact on game day, he said on Tuesday. For him to come in and be scoring, it was the best thing that could have happened for him to feel a part of the club and feel welcome.Beister, who arrived at Victory on loan from German side Mainz just a few weeks earlier, took a great stride with that goal. The 26-year-old made a perfect start at his new club, but also in rebuilding a long-lost career.Beister has made just one senior start since battling a debilitating ACL injury suffered in early January 2014.Thomas, who was forced to travel a long road himself to earn the nod as Victorys No.1, could sense it was a special moment for a player who had taken the risk of re-booting his career half-way across the world.Thats why I ran the whole way up the field. I was pretty tired running back actually, he said.I thought it was important to share that moment with him.I think he was really excited and maybe surprised by the atmosphere.I dont know if he expected that from Australian football. He came in and said wow it was really loud ... I think its made a big (impression) on him and making him feel at home.Without a match this weekend due to the earthquake that has affected Wellington Phoenixs home ground Westpac Stadium, Beister could improve his conditioning to contend for a first-team berth against Newcastle in their next outing.Thomas had a personal connection to the earthquake, with a younger brother currently holidaying in New Zealand. My mum called me a bit worried ... I ended up hearing back from him, he was out quad riding so he was alright, he said. I think she can run a strong 1400 metres later in her career.Another Slipper ran 57.73 and Tiyatrolani clocked 57.80, winning the fillies division and confirming Gollans belief that there isnt much between them. They will stick to races for their own sex before they meet up in the Listed Gold Edition (on December 17), Gollan said.Trainer David Vandyke is close to taking Emerald City to Sydney for the Christmas Cup and Summer Cup in December.Emerald City has won four metropolitan races in a row and deserves a crack at better races. I just want to see how he comes up after this run before making a final decision, Vandyke said. ' ' '

LOS ANGELES -- Adrian Gonzalez hit a game-winning double in the ninth inning, and the Los Angeles Dodgers rallied Monday night for a testy 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants that increased their NL West lead to six games. Two innings after a shoving match broke out when tempers flared between Madison Bumgarner and Yasiel Puig again, the Dodgers comeback in the ninth began with pinch-hitter Andrew Toles leadoff single.Corey Seager singled past diving second baseman Joe Panik on a two-strike pitch from Javier Lopez (1-3), allowing the speedy Toles to reach third.Justin Turners single tied the game, and Gonzalez followed with a drive to deep right field that eluded Hunter Pence.Joe Blanton (6-2) won in relief after the latest bullpen flop by the struggling Giants followed a tense pitchers duel between Bumgarner and fellow ace Clayton Kershaw. Both benches and bullpens cleared during a seventh-inning scuffle.Bumgarner fielded a slow tapper by Puig along the first base line and threw him out to end the inning. The left-hander punched his glove emphatically and said something that didnt appear to be cordial.Puig glared back and responded, and soon both teams massed near first base before the dustup ended without any punches. The late-game theatrics overshadowed the latest matchup between two of the games top left-handers, Bumgarner and Kershaw.Bumgarner allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings, struck out 10, walked none and retired his final 10 batters.Kershaw gave up an unearned run and three hits in his third start since returning from a back injury. He struck out seven and walked one. The three-time NL Cy Young Award winner retired seven in a row before leaving. The Giants scored their lone run during an odd sequence in the third. With two outs, Eduardo Nunez reached on an infield single to second. Kershaw dived and tried to backhand the ball, but it got by him and Chase Utleys throw pulled Gonzalez off first base as Nunez slid headfirst into the bag.Nunez stole second and was safe at third on another headfirst slide after catcher Yasmani Grandals throw sailed to the right of second. Nunez scored on Kershaws wild pitch that bounced in front of the plate and over Grandals head. The Giants led the division by 6 1/2 games at the All-Star break but lost the lead to the Dodgers on Aug. 21. Since the lead changed hands, San Francisco has lost 16 of 27 and the Dodgers have won 18 of 28. They play each other five more times over their final 12 games.FLIPPING PUIGThe crowd gasped when Puig flipped over the low wall along the right field side chasing a foul ball by Pence in the seventh. Puig went all the way around and crashed into the seats. He got up quickly and returned to his position in right, apparently unhurt.DODGERS MOVELos Angeles recalled infielder Micah Johnson from Triple-A Oklahoma City. BAGNERES-DE-BIGORRE, France -- Left alone and with his teammates far behind, Chris Froome held off repeated attacks to retain the Tour de France lead Sunday as the three-week race left the Pyrenees mountains. Dan Martin of Ireland, a 26-year-old Garmin-Sharp rider, won Stage 9 following a two-man sprint against Denmarks Jakob Fuglsang after they escaped Froome and the other pre-race favourites on the last of five tough climbs along the 168.5-kilometre trek from Saint-Girons to Bagneres-de-Bigorre in southwest France. As the race neared its first rest day Monday, Froome was relieved he was able to quash four attacks by Movistars Nairo Quintana on the last climb -- la Hourquette dAncizan -- despite his Sky teammates lagging behind. They were worn out after a strong team effort to help him win the yellow jersey a day earlier. "That was one of the hardest days Ive ever had on a bike," Froome said. "Im really happy with how I came through today ... Its not easy to follow Quintana in the climbs. Hes a light little Colombian who can fly up hills -- so to cover his attacks definitely wasnt easy." "But yeah, I was quite ready for more attacks, and Im quite glad there werent," he said, adding that it was "quite understandable" that his teammates werent with him after Saturdays effort. The Briton ketp an eye on his top rivals to win the title in Paris on July 21, including Spaniard pair Alberto Contador, of the Saxo Bank team, and Alejandro Valverde -- one of five Movistar riders in the front bunch of about two dozen riders. The Briton was content to let Martin and Fuglsang go ahead, and fight for the stage win. After a brief cat-and-mouse game, Martin wheeled around the Dane before the final bend with about 150 metres to go and held on for his first Tour stage win. Martin is the nephew of 1987 Tour champion Stephen Roche and a cousin of fellow cyclist Nicolas Roche. "I was confident in the final stretch because I know I have some speed," Martin said, adding he was lucky to have Astanas Fuglsang with him to share the work of holding off the favourites. "I knew I had to be ahead in the last two corners and, when I saw that I was, I knew I could win." "Luckily I had the legs to finish the job." They crossed 20 seconds ahead of Froome, two-time Tour winner Contador, and 2011 champion Cadel Evans of Australia, among others. Overall, the top standings didnt change much, except that Sky rider Richie Porte of Australia tumbled from 2nd place overall to 33rd after finishing nearly 18 minutes behind Martin. Froomes closest challenger is Valverde, who is 1:25 behind. Contador is sixth overall and trails by 1:51. Martin is eighth, 2:28 back. Froome captured the yellow jersey Saturday by launching a devastating attack in the final climb to win Stage 8, thanks in large part to a strong escort from Sky -- including Porte, who was second in that stage. But the fact there were none of his teammates around to help Froome will encourage the other teams that the seemingly unbeatable Sky team may have weaknesses. Tired from their efforts Saturday, the other Sky riders fell back early on and Froome was left to fend for himself. As is required of the yellow jersey holder after each stage, Froome went straight to anti-doping control after the race. This is the first Tour since Lance Armstrongs fall from grace after he was stripped of his seven Tour titles from 1999-2005 for serial doping. Froome vouched after his win Saturday that he was "100 per cent" clean and was asked on French television after Sundays stage if he has ever taken a performance-enhancing product. "No," Froome said. "I trained for many months to arrive here in this form." With temperatures once again well into the 30s C, Froome found himself isolated on the days first category 1 ascent up to Col de Mente, where Evans fell 40 seconds behind the yellow jersey group. Then, a breakaway group featuring Canadas Ryder Hesjedal, Tom Danielson and Pierre Rolland forged ahead. Hesjedal finished the stage 59th to drop into 41st overall. David Veilleux of Cap-Rouge, Que., and Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., are 132nd and 173rd respectively. Froomes chasing group included Contador, flanked by his Saxo-Tinkoff teammates, while Quintana sat behind Froome. Once they got over Col de Mente, Valverde attacked on the descent and chased after the breakaway group, prompting Froome to go after him. The second tough climb was the days longest -- about 13 kilometres up the famed Col de Peyresourde -- and a new breakaway took the initiative. Hesjedal, last years Giro dItalia winner, and climbing specialist Rolland were still there, joined by Romain Bardet of France and Belgian trio Bart De Clercq, Thomas De Gendt and Jan Bakelants. They were about 40 seconds ahead of Froomes group at the top of Peyresourde. Quintanas Movistar teammates drove hard at the front of the 20-man yellow jersey group as they chugged toward the third climb in the blazing sun. Australias Simon Clarke joined the leaders as the seven-man breakaway started to up the tempo and then broke away on his own up the Col de Val Louron-Azet -- a 7.4-kilometre ascent. Clarke was 1:10 ahead of Froomes group before he sped down a sharp descent to La Hourquette dAncizan -- 10 kilometres at 7.5 per cent gradient. Froome, meanwhile, tucked in behind four Movistar riders -- with Quintana riding his wheel -- for the last few kilometres until the last climb, where the breakaway riders were caught. French President Francois Hollande was among the spectators, protected from the heat in Tour director Christian Prudhommes car. Tuesday is a flat stage for sprinters. Luckless Newcastles record NRL losing streak will carry over into next season after their controversial 28-26 loss to St George Illawarra. But coach Nathan Brown insists the club will start its pre-season in a better position to how they did last November. An 80th-minute penalty goal by Gareth Widdop gave the Dragons their 10th win of the year at Kogarah Oval on Saturday afternoon. But the call to award the penalty by referee Henry Perenara for interference from retiring Newcastle forward Jeremy Smith in the play-the-ball appeared harsh. He dropped it on my foot and I was just getting up. Thats the story of our year, Smith said.In a game in which the captains challenge system was trialled but not used, the loss extended the Knights losing run to 18 as they became the first side since Gold Coast in 1993 to win just one game in a season. It was another harsh lesson for the Knights in the NRLs final round after they led 10-0 by the 12th minute and tied the scores at 26-all through a Mitch Barnett try with eight minutes to go.In the context of the game, there was no way that was a penalty, Brown said of the Smith incident before expanding on his hopes for 2017.At the start of the next pre-season, we will be in a far better position than we were last time.We lost 1200 games of experience and only gained Hokko (Trent Hodkinson). But now we have introduced a lot of young players to first grade and now were under the salary cap.Daniel Saifiti was the best front-rower on the park today and he is only 19.Sione Matautia has moved to the back row and been great for us.We have had a lot of young players finding their way. It will be a tough pre-season but they have grown from young boys into young men.The Dragons farewelled Ben Creagh, Benji Marshall, Mitch Rein and Mike Cooper. They are yet to replace hooker Rein and halfback Marshall. That will likely happen in a frenzy of player movement after the season ends.Dragons coach Paul McGregor said his side struggled for consistency and against adversity throughout 2016.Outside influences and outside pressure had a fair impact, he said.We have to do better adversity-wise, and we just made far too many fundamental mistakes.Jason Nightingale and Joel Thompson scored two tries each for the Dragons as they ended the year on a winning note. The Knights allowed four Dragons tries during a 15-minute period in the first half.In a 15-minute window, we basically lost the game, Brown said of the game that had no effect on the final make-up of the top eight. Italy coach Conte will replace interim manager Guus Hiddink at Stamford Bridge following this summers European Championships. Blues skipper Terry announced earlier in the year that he would leave the club at the end of this season, after failing to agree a new deal.Speaking on Sky Sports Now, Sidwell thinks Terrys experience is invaluable, and that Conte should seek to extend the 35-year olds 18-year career with the club. Italy head coach Antonio Conte is joining Chelsea this summer The main one is John Terry - theres no doubt Conte will have a chat with him, first and foremost, to see what his thoughts are, said Sidwell, who spent the 2007-08 season at Stamford Bridge. You know what youre going to get from him. Hes a leader on the pitch, and always puts himself on the line with the club. The thing you wonder with John is, what are they going to offer?Of course hes still good enough. Last year he was fantastic - he had Matic in front of him, but this year, Matic has not been at his best, which has left John a little exposed.Hes one of the better centre-halves in the country, theres been talk of having him back in the England squad for the Euros. Contes Chelsea to-do list What does new Chelsea boss need to sort first? Sidwell is expecting Conte to offer Chelsea something similar to former manager Jose Mourinho, who was sacked in December.dddddddddddd.The Brighton midfielder, however, believes the Chelsea players did Mourinho no favours earlier in the season, and has fears the same could happen to Conte if things do not go the teams way.Hes quite similar to Jose. Hes very meticulous and demands a lot from his players. The only thing that worries me with the set of players is that a lot of them just downed their tools with Mourinho, added Sidwell. Sidwell (left) believes John Terry (right) could still play a crucial role for Chelsea Whos to say theyre not going to do that next year when this man is in charge? When he demands things, drags people off at half-time in big games, or makes statements? Its going to be similar to what Mourinho demanded. Its down to the players to adapt to that and prove their worth in the team. I dont think he will take any prisoners along the way. SPRINGFIELD, N.J. -- In this weather-delayed edition of Four-Ball, our panel considers whether anyone will gain an edge after Saturdays delay, as well as Phil Mickelsons prediction of history in the making during the final 36 holes at Baltusrol Golf Club.1. Who will Saturdays delay impact the most negatively? And positively?ESPN.com senior golf analyst Michael Collins: Negatively -- Marc Leishman. He has to come to the course and hit (hopefully) one putt at 7 a.m., then sit around all day waiting to definitely/maybe play Round 4. Nothing good will come from that. Positively -- Emiliano Grillo will have had all that adrenaline crash out of him waiting around Saturday, so Sunday he wont have the same high and low.ESPN.com senior golf writer Bob Harig: It affects the leaders Jimmy Walker and Robert Streb the most negatively. They are the ones sleeping on the lead, playing well, and the last thing they want to do is think about this more. Streb, especially, has not had much success this year and likely wanted to get back at it. It might very well help Henrik Stenson, who is playing great but might be aided by the break after a hectic two weeks, including his Open victory.ESPN.com senior national columnist Ian OConnor: -- The contenders who havent won a major are likely to get a bit more anxious the more this drags on. So thats bad news for Jimmy Walker, Robert Streb and Emiliano Grillo, and good news for Jason Day and Henrik Stenson.ESPN.com senior golf writer Jason Sobel: It will impact the reputation of the PGA of America most negatively. I realize this question was probably hinting at the competitors, but these guys are used to playing stop-start-stop again golf on the PGA Tour. Traditionally, the PGA has a solid reputation for how it conducts golf tournaments, but this decision might lump them in with the USGA, for some observers. As for the positive effect, I think Kevin Kisner and Padraig Harrington, each of whom posted 65 and got into the clubhouse before the delay, probably had the greatest benefit.ESPN.com senior writer Kevin Van Valkenburg: It has to hurt Robert Streb, who is coming off one of the best rounds of his career. You have to think he wishes he could get back out there and not sleep another night sharing the lead at a major. I think it helps Jordan Spieth, who actually hasnt putted great thus far and is only 6 shots back. If he can get aggressive on slow greens and gets his touch back, he could make a charge. His irons look sharp again.2. Phil Mickelson said Saturday that a 62 will be shot at this PGA Championship. Agree or disagree?Collins: Disagree. And Phil did the jinx on purpose. A bit of reverse psychology, like talking about a perfect game in the bottom of the sixth inning. You know theres no chance of it happening now, because anyone who gets close wont be able to get it out of their heads.Harig: I dont agree but understand why Mickelson said it. There have been a number of low scores already, and the course is now saturated. Soft typically translates to easier. It wouldnt surprise me if it happened, but until it does, it is just hard to say that it is guaranteed.OConnor: Phil actually said a 61 is possible too, which is a Bob Beamon-like leap. Sure, a record 62 is possible on a soft and vulnerable course that gives the players a head start (par is only 70). But Im guessing the golf gods will strike down Lefty, like they did at Troon, and bury his prediction in a bunker.Sobel: Disagree. Its been 437 majors without one yet. The golf gods wont let it happen. Hey, he should know: His bid for 62 was denied by the higher powers.Van Valkenburg: Disagree. Thats typical Phil being Phil, saying stuff because he wants to entertain us, but also because he likes to make proclamations that could pass as wagers. There is a reason that no one has ever shot 62. The pressure when youre trying to make that final birdie is enormous. Im not sure there shouldnt be an asterisk for 63s shot on par-70 courses, anyway. Making seven birdies with no bogeys isnt quite the same as making nine on a par-72.3. Fact or fiction: A Monday finish detracts from the tournament.Collins: Fact. Remember the last Monday finish winner of the PGA Championship? It was Phil Mickelson here at Baltusrol in 2005. You didnt see it, and neither did I. You were working, and I was sleeping.Harig: Its never ideal, but it is hard to say that the Monday finish diminished Zach Johnsons victory last year at St. Andrews or Mickelsons win here in 2005. Lousy weather and terrible spectating conditions take away from the tournament, but if there is a great finish, it doesnt much matter.OConnor: Fact, with an asterisk. I dont remember too many people complaining when Mickelson won on Monday here in 2005. Lets see who wins -- and how. And lets just hope this thing doesnt finish on Wednesday.Sobel: Fact. Obviously, its better to have a Sunday finish for everyone involved. But there is a little part of me that believes a Monday finish, with all eyeballs in offices and schools around the world focused on the proceedings, sort of gives this tournament the attention it deserves.Van Valkenburg: Fact. Even though this is a new era, where people can watch the broadcast on their tablets or phones while at work, theyre going to be distracted, if they tune in at all. There wont be as many fans out at the course on Monday either, simply because a lot of them have to be at work or taking their kids to summer camp. Its hard not to blame the compressed Olympic schedule for this. We should be playing the PGA in mid-August, not July.4. Rory McIlroy missed the cut. Whats the state of his game right now?Collins: Inconsistent. It feels like with Rory, he is either getting a backdoor top-10 or missing the cut in a major. Thats not totally true, but it sure feels that way, especially in majors. I dont know right now that Rory can fix what hes got -- a case of the life. Hell recover from it someday, but right now its a full-blown infection.Harig: Disappointing. Its just hard to believe that a guy who drives it so beautifully can struggle like he has at times this year. Missing two cuts in majors in a season when you expect to win one just leaves a bad taste, and McIlroy now has a long eight-plus months until the Masters.OConnor: Rory is totally lost on the greens. All the great ones have to weather bad stretches in their primes, and I suspect hell recover sooner than later. Given the Americans luck at the Ryder Cup, I wouldnt be surprised if sooner means Hazeltine.Sobel: Tee to green, hes Superman; on the greens, hes Clark Kent. He needs a new putter, a new outlook, a new guru -- something, anything, to help him get the ball into the hole right now.Van Valkenburg: There are two different camps when it comes to Rory: people who believe hell be fine and any scrutiny he faces is a product of unrealistic expectations; and those who think hes in real denial about the mental scars hes giving himself on the greens and its starting to become a problem. I think were in danger of the latter becoming true. He looks mentally fried with a putter in his hand. The truth is, his wedge game is just as much of a problem. Its been mediocre for two years, but he gets away with it because his driver and mid-irons are so good. He needs to get some confidence back by hitting wedges to 10 feet again, not 30 feet. MANCHESTER, England -- As a new era began at Manchester United on Monday, a lingering problem from the final days of Alex Fergusons trophy-laden tenure was casting a shadow over David Moyes first official day in charge of the English champions. Nearly two months after being hired as successor to Ferguson, Moyes was met by a row of photographers under grey skies when he arrived at Uniteds training ground to start his planning ahead of the new season. Moyes has already put his stamp on the new role, bringing in three coaches from former club Everton to join his backroom staff, but its the future of Wayne Rooney that will be the Scots biggest priority this week. Speculation over where the England striker will be playing next season has been dominating the sports pages in British newspapers this off-season -- and will continue to do so until he sits down with Moyes and the pair decide where Rooneys future lies. Rooney, who isnt due in for the first day of training until Wednesday or Thursday, sat out the final matches of Fergusons 26-year tenure after putting in a transfer request because he was frustrated at being substituted in some matches last season, notably the Champions League last-16 second leg against Real Madrid. Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain have been heavily linked with the burly striker, even though Ferguson insisted before he ended his time at United that Rooney wouldnt be leaving. The situation is even more delicate because it was Moyes who sold Rooney to United back in 2004, when manager of Everton, and then launched successful legal action against the striker over allegations in Rooneys autobiography that the Scot leaked details of a private conversation to the media about the factors behind the move from Everton. The pairs relationship has improved since then, but Moyes has to decide whether to persevere with a player who has tested the patience and loyalty of United fans after putting in two transfer requests in 2 1/2 years. If there is no official announcement regarding Rooney over the next week, the make-up of the United squad to tour the Far East from July 10 will make interesting reading. Life at United will be much different compared to Moyes 11 years at Everton, where he was heralded as one of the brightest managers in English football despite never winning a major trophy. Silverware will be demanded at United in the first year of his six-year deal, with the northwest club having been accustomed to capturing titles under Ferguson. Moyes will also be under the spotlight much more off the pitch. Uniteds global appeal was further underlined Monday when it added True Corporation Plc, one of Thailands leading telecommunications companies, to its growing array of commercial sponsors on a three-year deal. True will become Uniteds official mobile partner for Thailand, the clubs official in-house TV broadcaster in the country and also be the associate match sponsor for the Bangkok leg of the preseason tour, when United plays Singha All Stars on July 13. Moyes will need his squad to be in perfect shape for the start of the new Premier League season, with United having been given a tough early fixture list that includes games against Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the opening five matches. Steve Round will be Moyes assistant, replacing Mike Phelan, after being the Scots No. 2 at Everton since July 2008. Former England international Chris Woods also arrives from Goodison Park to be goalkeeping coach and Jimmy Lumsden will be another coach on Uniteds books. "I have worked with Steve, Chris and Jimmy for a number of years and I am delighted they have decided to join me at this great club," Moyes said. "They bring great qualities in their respective fields and I know that, like me, they feel that this is a challenge to relish. "I have great faith that, together, we can build upon the success this club has enjoyed over many years." Ed Woodward, Uniteds executive vice chairman, said: "This is an exciting and challenging time for the club and I have great belief that David and his team will have all the energy and attributes needed to help this club continue in its long-standing traditions." SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick is well aware of how his decision not to participate in the recent presidential election while promoting a message of change has been received.Asked Tuesday why he opted not to cast a vote for measures beyond the choice of a president, Kaepernick offered a familiar response in taking aim at the system and stating his belief that voting isnt the only way to make a difference.I thought a lot of different things about the process and what I could and couldnt do, Kaepernick said. Once again, the system of oppression is what I have an issue with.Theres more than one way to create change. The Sacramento Bee reported this week that Kaepernick, who has knelt during the national anthem in protest of racial inequality and oppression all season, has actually never been registered to vote in California or in Nevada, where he attended college.Kaepernick did not confirm that hes never been registered but again pointed to his feelings about the voting system when asked about not registering to vote now or in the past.Once again, I addressed that, I continue to address it, I dont agree with the system of oppression and thats something I will continue to not agree with, Kaepernick said.In the run-up to the 2016 election, Kaepernick repeatedly made it clear he didnt approve of either President-elect Donald Trump or Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. On Election Day, Kaepernick said he would not be voting and foollowed through on that promise.ddddddddddddOn Wednesday, Kaepernick told Arizona reporters on a conference call that it didnt matter who won the election because neither candidate was a good choice. On Sunday, Kaepernick said he felt it would be hypocritical for him to vote because it would be the equivalent of showing support for a system he doesnt believe in. He also said the choice of Trump should increase the urgency for everyone to work toward solutions to make the system better.I think everybody should feel urgency to make sure that were doing the right thing, building things the right way in order to be able to protect ourselves from what may come from this, Kaepernick said. When asked whether he believed the reason for so many no-shows to the voting booth were because many feel the same way as him, Kaepernick said he wasnt sure. You would have to ask them that, Kaepernick said. I dont want to speak for anybody or put anybody in a situation where I am not representing them properly so I really cant say.Kaepernick has previously pledged to donate $1 million and any proceeds from the sale of his jersey to groups that can help the causes hes working for and he recently held a Know Your Rights camp for kids in Oakland that provided guidance on a variety of topics, including education, fitness, money and interacting with law enforcement. NEW YORK -- A first-time All-Star at age 31, Steven Wright traveled across the country and never got to pitch. That gave the AL ERA leader an early start to the second half, and the knuckleballer pitched the Boston Red Sox over the New York Yankees 5-3 Friday night.Wright originally was slated to pitch Saturday, but Red Sox manager John Farrell called him at 3 p.m. Thursday and asked him to start the second-half opener.I wasnt expecting it, but I had a feeling there could be a good chance because I didnt throw in the All-Star Game, Wright said.Pitching on eight days rest, Wright (11-5) won for the eighth time in nine decisions. Ryan Hanigan, Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts homered off Michael Pineda (3-9) as Boston won its fifth straight. When Wright arrived in San Diego, AL manager Ned Yost informed the pitcher he likely would not appear. Its definitely a bummer, Wright said. I was going to be the emergency, because they didnt want to end in a tie, and I was the only guy that was capable of going multiple innings. And I was like, fine.He needed just 39 pitches to get through four innings against the Yankees and retired his first 14 batters before Alex Rodriguez hit a slow hopper the pitcher couldnt come up with on a bare-hand try about 45 feet from the plate on the third base side. There was quite a bit of violence to the knuckleball, Farrell said.New York closed the gap with a three-run sixth, when Wright hit Chase Headley on the thigh with a pitch and loaded the bases with a walk to Jacoby Ellsbury. Carlos Beltran had a two-run single on a ball that zipped past first baseman Hanley Ramirez and down the right-field line, and Brian McCann hit an RBI grounder as Ramirez bounced his throw to second, eliminating the possibility of an inning-ending double play.I gave up one hard-hit ball the entire night. It just happened to be with the bases loaded, Wright said.He improved to 4-1 against the Yankees, allowing three runs and three hits in six innings as his ERA rose from 2.68 to 2.78.Hanigans third-inning homer was his first since last Aug. 19 off Clevelands Corey Kluber, and the ball was caught by reliever Robbie Ross Jr., who stuck out his cap to snag it in the visitors bullpen in left field. When that ball was hit, I was like, that balls going out, Im going right for it. I got 4 1/2, Ross said of his season total. The half was the one where Brock (Holt) hit it off the top of the fence and I caught it.Shaw hit a two-run homer in the fifth, and Bogaerts made it 5-0 with a two-run drive in the sixth. It kind of looked like we needed a time through the order to get back in sync after the break, Farrell said.Brad Ziegler and Ross followed Wright with an inning apiece, and Koji Uehara finished the four-hitter for his fifth save, his third since closer Craig Kimbrel hurt a knee.Pineda (3-9) gave up five runs and five hits in five-plus innings, leaving him with a 5.56 ERA and 18 home runs allowed in 18 starts this season. New York (44-45) is under .500 after the All-Star break for the first time since 1995.Its one game, guys, Beltran said. We have to focus on winning series, especially against teams that are in our division.IN THE SEATSIndiana Gov. Mike Pence, announced by Donald Trump as his pick for Republican vice presidential nominee, was in the crowd of 47,459, the Yankees fourth home sellout this season.WHAT, ME WORRY?David Ortiz laughed at the notion his comments this week that Boston should sign Edwin Encarnacion to replace him next season could be construed as improper.Tampering? I dont write no paycheck, Ortiz said. I can say whatever I want. Im not a GM or a team owner. If I say tomorrow that I want to play with LeBron James, am I tampering, too?TRAINERS ROOMRed Sox reliever Junichi Tazawa, on the disabled list with a right shoulder impingement, threw a 25-pitch bullpen. A week ago before their final regular-season games, San Diego State and Wyoming knew they would be playing this weekend for the Mountain West Conference championship. And both teams looked bad: San Diego State lost at home to Colorado State 63-31, while Wyoming fell at New Mexico 56-35.So were both coming from the same situation and whichever team rebounds the best is going to win it, Aztecs coach Rocky Long said. And which team has the shortest memory. If we linger in that rear view mirror, were going to let one team beat us twice, said Cowboys coach Craig Bohl, who was named the Mountain Wests coach of the year for leading Wyoming back from a 2-10 season in 2015.San Diego State (9-3, 6-2 Mountain West) travels to Wyoming (8-4, 6-2) on Saturday afternoon to determine the conference title. It is the second meeting in three weeks between the two teams. The Cowboys beat the Aztecs 34-33 on Nov. 19 during the regular season when Long went for the win on a two-point conversion with no time left and it failed.Things to know when Wyoming hosts San Diego State:DEFENDING CHAMP VS NEWBIE: The Aztecs are seeking to repeat as conference champions and to win their third league title in five years.Wyoming is playing in its first Mountain West Conference title game. The Cowboys have to go back to their days in the Western Athletic Conference to find their last conference title -- 1993 when they shared the regular-season title with BYU and Fresno State; and their last outright conference title -- 1988. Also, its the first postseason game ever at the 67-year-old War Memorial Stadium in Laramie.Thats a lot of water under a bridge, Bohl said. And we got one shot. We got one shot at this deal and so that comes down to us as coaches to maneuver this thing around to put ourselves in the best position to win it.GROUND GAME: Saturdays game features two of the top five running backs in the country.San Diego State running back Donnel Pumphrey is second in the nation in rushing yards with 1,908 and rushing yards per game at 159.ddddddddddddHe is third in all-purpose yards with 2,119. He is currently third on the NCAA career rushing list with 6,180 yards. He needs 153 yards to pass Ricky Williams for second and 218 yards to surpass all-time NCAA rushing leader Ron Dayne. However, yards have been tough to come by the past couple of weeks for Pumphrey, who was held to 53 yards against Colorado State and 76 yards against Wyoming on Nov. 19.Wyomings Brian Hill is No. 5 in the nation with 139.5 yards per game and No. 3 with 21 rushing touchdowns. Hill had 131 rushing yards in the first meeting with the Aztecs.COACHING CHALLENGE: Playing a team twice in one season is new to Long, who is in his 17th season as a college head coach.Ive never played the same team in the same year, Long said. ...Its kind of a weird deal. From year to year, you try to change things up, so they dont zero in. But in two weeks, I dont know how much you can change up because you confuse your own guys if you change up too much.Bohl has faced the situation during his coaching tenure at the FCS level.I can tell you this -- when you beat a team its hard to beat them twice, he said. Its not like its not doable, but you look through past years, that ones a tough order.WEATHER: Cold, windy weather could play a role in the game. The National Weather Service is predicting temperatures around 20 degrees at kickoff along with 15 to 25 mph winds gusting up to 30 mph. Wind chills at kickoff are expected to be around 5 degrees. While Long said his Southern California squad should be able to handle the cold, he said the wind is a different story because it can cause issues for quarterbacks, receivers, kickers and kick returners. If you have a lot of wind, it really increases the difficulty of the game, and makes it more likely of mistakes, Long said.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '

BALTIMORE -- Matt Moore isnt only breaking records set by Cy Young winner David Price, hes performing at a level thats drawing comparisons to a pretty good southpaw named Babe Ruth. Moore pitched seven innings of five-hit ball to stay unbeaten, Luke Scott and Matt Joyce homered and the Tampa Bay Rays beat the Baltimore Orioles 3-1 Sunday for a three-game sweep. Moore (8-0) gave up one run, struck out three and walked one to become the first eight-game winner in the majors. The left-hander has won nine straight decisions, breaking the franchise record of eight set last year by Price. Not only that, but the 23-year-old is the youngest lefty to start the season 8-0 since Ruth did it in 1917 at age 22. "Historically speaking, its been wonderful," Rays manager Joe Maddon said of Moores season. Moore is delighted with the results, especially because Tampa Bay is 9-0 in his nine starts. "Its good for our team. Thats the biggest thing we can take away from my record," he said. "On my days to pitch, were winning all the games. Thats the most important part. " The Rays ninth victory in 11 games left them a season-high three games over .500 (23-20) and lifted Tampa Bay into a third-place tie with skidding Baltimore in the AL East. The Rays had been in fourth since April 20. "It puts us back in with a tie, standings-wise, which I think is important," Maddon said. "You got to get over each team that is in front of you before you can get back to the top. To come in here (and get a sweep) indicates how much better weve been playing." Adam Jones had two hits, stole two bases and drove in a run for the Orioles, who have dropped five straight -- all at home. Baltimore managed only five hits, none after the sixth inning. "Hes dealing right now," Jones said of Moore. Baltimore was outscored 22-16 in the first two games of the series. This time, poor pitching could not be blamed for the defeat. "Pitching wasnt the issue today," manager Buck Showalter said. "It was trying to solve Moore. He was the difference-maker." Chris Tillman (3-2) allowed three runs and five hits in six innings. Hes 1-5 lifetime against the Rays. Tampa Bay led 2-1 in the sixth inning when Joyce hit a drive that appeared to bounce off the wall near the right-field foul pole.dddddddddddd First base umpire Dan Iassogna called it a fair ball but not a home run. Showalter argued that it was a foul ball and Maddon contended it was a home run. "Its kind of unusual for us both to be out there at the same time," Maddon said. "I had to argue the point that it could be a home run." After a lengthy meeting, the umpires adjourned to watch a replay and returned with their decision: home run. "Ive got a guy who lets me know if I have a good argument, so I knew once they went inside it was going to be a home run," Showalter said. Moore and the Tampa Bay bullpen made the 3-1 lead stand up. Joel Peralta worked a perfect eighth and Fernando Rodney got three straight outs for his eighth save. Neither team had a base runner until Yunel Escobar drew a two-out walk in the third. Desmond Jennings followed with an RBI double on a 3-2 pitch. In the bottom half, Danny Valencia hit a leadoff double in his first at-bat with Baltimore but was stranded. One inning later, Manny Machado was credited with a triple after Jennings and Joyce nearly collided on a line drive to right that ticked off Joyces glove and rolled to the wall. Jones followed with a run-scoring single, then stole two bases but was left at third. Scott, who played for Baltimore from 2008-11, connected in the fifth for a 2-1 lead. He has at least one RBI in nine of 13 starts this season. NOTES: Tampa Bays Evan Longoria extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. ... LONDON -- Britains independent police watchdog opened an investigation Monday into the death of a former Premier League soccer player who was shot with a stun gun by police.Dalian Atkinson, 48, went into cardiac arrest on the way to a hospital and died around 90 minutes after officers used a Taser on him, the West Midlands Ambulance Service said in a statement. Officers deployed stun guns after being called to an address in Telford, northwest of Birmingham, involving the safety of an individual, West Mercia Police said.He had some health issues that he was trying to get through and thats why his heart was weak, his nephew Fabian Atkinson said. When a Taser is deployed, as soon as a Taser is deployed, they need to automatically call an ambulance. How do they know the health of the guy or the girl that they are affecting? The case immediately touched off a debate about the use of Tasers in a country where police rarely carry guns.Black people were three times more likely to be involved in Taser incidents than whites from 2011 to 2015, according to Home Office statistics obtained by the BBC in a Freedom of Information request. Atkinson was black. The Independent Police Complaints Commission swiftly moved to take charge of the investigation into Atkinsons death.I would like to assure people that we have begun a full and thorough investigation into police contact with Dalian Atkinson prior to his death, including the level and type of force used, said the IPCCs deputy chair, Rachel Cerfontyne.
