With their loss to the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night, the Toronto Blue Jays lost sole possession of first place in the American League East for the first time in 43 days. Not only were they bumped out of first in their division, but theyve also dropped out of a wild card spot, trailing the Los Angeles Angels and the Seattle Mariners by a game going into Fridays match-up. Which brings the question with just over a week until the All-Star Break - is this team actually a playoff contender? Since their last World Series victory, the Blue Jays have been mired in a 20-year playoff drought. But it wasnt like they werent trying to change their ways. That blockbuster trade with the Marlins in 2012 produced just one more win last season than the previous one. They finished 23 games behind the John Farrell-led Boston Red Sox and 17 1/2 games back of a wild card spot. So where do things sit for this season? How did they stay atop of the division for such a long period of time? The offence has certainly been a factor. The team has had their fair share of home runs - especially in the month of May led by Edwin Encarnacion - but the small ball has been evident too. And it certainly has - until recently - a lot to do with a healthier roster. But the real question around this team making it to the postseason will depend on their ability to crawl back to a comfortable lead. They have a tough ten-game road trip prior to the All-Star break. In their first lengthy road trip of the season, they went a combined 3-7 in Baltimore, New York and Cincinnati. And over the past six seasons, Toronto has struggled hard on road trips of nine or more games. In fact, since their nine-game road losing streak in 2009, the Blue Birds have an abysmal 66-108 record over 18 road trips of nine or more games. Over those 18 road trips, they returned home with a winning record just three times. That all said, do you think the Toronto Blue Jays will re-take the division and make the playoffs this October or will are we looking at another disappointing season? As always, its Your! Call. Polak, a 28-year-old right-handed defenceman, fills a need Toronto had for a stay-at-home defenceman. Breakdowns contributed to an eight-game losing streak near the end of the season that tanked the Leafs playoff hopes.dddddddddddd According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun, the Leafs retained $200,000 of cap hit in the deal. MINNEAPOLIS -- Kendrys Morales is on his way back to Seattle to try and give the Mariners struggling offence a boost as they chase a playoff spot. The Minnesota Twins traded Morales to the Mariners on Thursday for minor-league pitcher Stephen Pryor. Morales hit 23 home runs and drove in 80 runs for the Mariners last season, but turned down a $14.1 million qualifying offer from Seattle to become a free agent. "Hes a professional hitter," Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon said. "He gives us the opportunity to stretch out our lineup, so to speak. Hes a nice fit, switch-hitter, hitting behind Robbie (Cano). "He gives us options, what we want to do with (Kyle) Seager, where we want to hit him," McClendon said. "I like it." Morales sat out the first two months of the season while searching for a new deal, signing a pro-rated $12 million contract with the Twins on June 8. But he hit .234 with 11 doubles, one homer and 18 RBIs in 39 games with the Twins, who have faded from contention in the AL Central. The Mariners, who started the day with a half-game lead for the second wild-card spot in the AL, are hoping a return to Safeco Field could help Morales rediscover his swing. Seattle has the best ERA in the majors, but the Mariners offence is 14th in the American League in runs scored. Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik said missing spring training and the first two months of the season has had an impact on Morales slow start. He believes hes close to his hitting stride. "I dont think there is any question about that," Zduriencik said. "I thought it was interesting that he went right to the big leagues but that plays a part in the negotiations. "Nevertheless, when you look at where hes at right now, we know what Kendrys is, we know his career as a hitter, we know what he did here and now that hes in a pennant race and technically has spring training under his belt -- he did it at the major league level -- I think we all feel that Kendrys is going to hit his stride and be the Kendrys Morales we all know," he added. Morales was signed by the Twins to be the everyday designated hitter, but he played a lot of first base while filling in for the injured Joe Mauer. "I think he was a good teammate. I think he was a good influence on some of the players in this clubhouse. He got off to a surprisingly quick start and then cooled off, of course," Twins GM Terry Ryan said. "We gave it a shot. Obviously, our club hasnt responded." In the first sign that the Twins are starting to look at selling some of their veteran pieces to retool for next season, they acquired the 25-year-old Pryor in the exchange. Pryor has appeared in 34 games for the Mariners since 2012, posting a 2.81 ERA. He will report to Triple-A Rochester. Pryor, who once regularly had his pitches clocked at 100 mph, started this season on the disabled list after having surgery to repair a torn right latissimus dorsi muscle. He made one appearance for the Mariners this season. He was 2-2 record with a 5.71 ERA in 34 2-3 innings for Triple-A Tacoma this season. The Twins also recalled infielder Jorge Polanco from Class A Fort Myers. Couples ended a 16-event winless streak dating to the Senior British Open in July 2012, closing with a 2-under 69 for a six-stroke victory over Bernhard Langer, Peter Senior and Mark OMeara. The Hall of Famer has nine victories in four seasons on the 50-and-over tour after winning 15 times on the PGA Tour. "Its great to win. It seems like four years ago," Couples said. "Now I have 60 days to lose all my momentum." After playing 15 events on the Champions Tour this year and finishing third in the points race, Couples indicated he was going to play at least two or three more events next year and take a shot at winning the Charles Schwab Cup. His points finish earned him a bonus $300,000 annuity. "This tour, to win the Schwab Cup, Ill play a lot and I hope to play well," Couples said. Id like to have the kind of year Kenny had. The goal is to win the Cup. The goal is to play." Couples finished at 17-under 267 at TPC Harding Park. "This year, I wouldnt call it a waste, but it was a waste as far as not winning," he said. "This week was different. I did not miss many shots. I got the lead and I kept it. Im not a fierce competitor but I love the competition. Just winning, even if its a club championship, youre thrilled." Langer, second behind Perry in the Charles Schwab Cup standings, shot a 67. Senior had a 69, and OMeara closed with a double bogey for a 70. Perry had a 68 to tie for fifth at 10 under. He led the tour with three victories, taking the Senior Players Champiionship and U.ddddddddddddS. Senior Open in consecutive tour starts and winning the AT&T Championship last week in San Antonio. "Its been a magical season," said Perry, who was accompanied by his wife, three daughters, their husbands and a couple of grandchildren. "This is my highest accomplishment. Ive been close to winning a major on the PGA Tour and to finally win a few this year, its the things dreams are made of." Perry, who took over the points lead in July, joked all week about how he had a 29-1 chance of winning the points race. Langer needed to win the tournament and have Perry finish outside the top five to win. "Im thinking Ive got to play," Perry said. "All year my head was everywhere and I was trying to focus. But the dream came true. I was, probably, playing the best golf Ive ever played. I cant wait to go out and celebrate with my family." Couples earned $440,000 and finished fourth on the Champions Tour money list with $1,706,812. Langer topped the money list with $2,448,428, and Perry was second at $2,241,188. "Fred played very well," OMeara said. "He did what he had to do. Its not easy with the lead. He drove the ball pretty darn good and he putted pretty well and thats what it takes." Cutting his teeth on a public course in Seattle, Couples said TPC Harding Park, which will undergo an extensive renovation on the greens, always was a special place for him. "Ive said it all week. Its Harding Park. This is a tremendous golf course," he said. "It doesnt seem really hard but if you miss the ball in the wrong spot, or miss the green, it can play really hard. Its one of my all-time favourites." Cheap Jerseys Store Jerseys NFL Cheap Cheap NFL Black Jerseys China Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Wholesale Wholesale Jerseys Camo China NFL Jerseys ' ' '

EDMONTON -- Edmonton Oilers forward Ryan Smyth is calling it a career after tipping in shots and absorbing spine-jarring jolts standing in front of goalies for 18 NHL seasons. Smyth said Friday his body was still willing, but with his young children getting older, his mind was wandering. "The mental side of the game, I didnt have it at times," Smyth told a news conference at Rexall Place, with his family on hand. "Ive got a wonderful family that I miss out on a lot of their stuff. That (became) a factor. "There comes a time in my life where you have to turn the page." The 38-year-old known for his famous mullet was also a stalwart on Team Canada. He was drafted sixth overall by Edmonton in 1994 and spent most of his 18-season career in Albertas capital. He mixed grit with a scoring touch and became the face of the post-Wayne Gretzky Oilers, leading the team to a Stanley Cup final appearance in 2006. Smyth thanked everyone from former teammates to the Oilers massage therapist in a speech that saw the scrappy forward fight back tears. Sitting beside him at the news conference was Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish. "There are many players that have worn the Edmonton Oilers jersey, but there are no players who wore the jersey that had more passion than Ryan Smyth," MacTavish said. Smyth has 386 goals and 456 assists and 974 penalty minutes in 1,269 games heading into Edmontons Saturday season finale against the visiting Vancouver Canucks. He added 59 points (28-31) and 88 penalty minutes in 93 career playoff games. He also earned the nickname "Captain Canada" for his loyalty to Canadas mens national team. The team is preparing a tribute to the Banff, Alta., native during Saturdays game. Asked what hell miss the most about the game, Smyth said the it will be the journey itself. "Being on the ice surface, the adrenalin, the excitement, obviously your teammates," he said. "Ill for sure miss the guys." What was the highlight, he was asked. "Probably playing a thousand games and coming back and being an Edmonton Oiler." Teammates said he will be remembered as a blue-collar workhorse who made his living with a big stick in front of the net, deflecting and tipping in point shots and passes while taking a hellacious beating. Oilers winger David Perron said he grew up idolizing Smyth. "He was always around the net being greasy and scoring goals that everyone was like, How did that go in? Oh, Ryan Smyth scored again. At the end of the year hed have 30-40 goals," said Perron after practice Friday. Oilers goaltender Ben Scrivens said Smyths trademark goals come from a mix of skill and guts. "Hes always in position but never stops the puck, and it makes it really difficult to see pucks because no matter which way you look it seems like hes there," said Scrivens. "Its a talent he acquired through hard work and just sacrificing his body." Smyth played at least 40 games as an Oiler in 14 of his 18 seasons. He blossomed in his first full season with the team in 1996-97, when he had 61 points (39 goals and 22 assists) in 82 games. Smyth was a steady force up front in Edmonton early in his career. The six-foot-two 191-pounder played a key role in the Oilers 2006 Stanley Cup run. Smyth had 16 points (7-9) in 24 games that post-season as the Oilers dropped a seven-game series to the Carolina Hurricanes. He was shipped to the New York Islanders at the trade deadline during the 2006-07 season. Long-term contract negotiations between Smyths agent, Don Meehan, and Oilers then general manager Kevin Lowe went to the 11th hour but the two sides couldnt reach a deal. With Smyth due to become a free agent that summer, Lowe didnt want to risk losing him for nothing in the off-season. Smyth said goodbye to Edmonton during an emotional news conference at the city airport. He played two seasons with Colorado and two more with Los Angeles before he asked Kings GM Dean Lombardi for a trade in 2011. A deal was finalized in June of that year. He has provided some veteran leadership on a young Oilers squad over his last three seasons. Saturday will be Smyths last chance to set a team record for power-play goals. Smyth and Glenn Anderson have 126 each, one ahead of Gretzky. Internationally, Smyth played at two Winter Games, helping Canada win gold at the Salt Lake City Olympics in 2002. Smyth also won gold at the World Cup of Hockey in 2004 and represented Canada at seven straight world hockey championship during his prime. Cole Hamels Jersey . On Wednesday night, they showed that stellar defence and a little small ball can get the job done too. With pinch-runner Kevin Pillar aboard after Dioner Navarro opened the bottom of the ninth with a single, Anthony Gose dropped down an excellent bunt along the first-base line. Rougned Odor Jersey . The unrestricted free agent agreed to terms with the club on Thursday on a one-year, two-way deal worth $700,000. http://www.authenticrangerspro.com/range...on-ross-jersey/. The 2010 batting champ showed what he can do when hes mostly healthy. Gonzalez homered, doubled and singled in his return to the lineup, and the Colorado Rockies snapped a five-game losing streak with a 13-4 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday night. Elvis Andrus Jersey . -- The Windsor Spitfires were left with just one goaltender Tuesday after having their starter walk out on them midway through Game 3 of their Ontario Hockey League playoff matchup with the London Knights. Texas Rangers Jerseys . - IndyCar racing officials expressed confidence on Monday that the NOLA Motorsports Park will be able to complete more $4.After enjoying a walk-off victory on Saturday afternoon to force a rubber match, the Toronto Blue Jays will close out their weekend set with the Detroit Tigers Sunday at Rogers Centre. Saturdays contest needed extra innings to be decided, and in the bottom of the 10th inning Danny Valencia got aboard with a leadoff single and Nolan Reimold plated him with an RBI double to lift the home team to victory. "It was a great day all the way around," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "It was really the only way to end it." It was the second comeback of the afternoon for the Blue Jays on the afternoon. In the bottom of the ninth, Dioner Navarro delivered a game-tying RBI single. Jose Reyes went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. Marcus Stroman was outstanding, completing nine innings and allowing just four hits and two earned runs, but it was Aaron Loup (4-3) who earned the win with a scoreless 10th. For the Tigers, Max Scherzer dominated for eight innings, yielding four hits and one earned run, striking out 11 and walking none. After Joe Nathan blew the save in the ninth, Joba Chamberlain (1-5) gave up the walk-off hit. Detroit opened up a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning on a two-run double by Victor Marttinez, one of just four hits for the squad on the afternoon.dddddddddddd Tigers newcomer and Sunday starter David Price was strong in his Detroit debut on Aug. 5 at Yankee Stadium despite serving up a pair of home-run balls. He pitched 8 2/3 innings in the no-decision, allowing three earned runs with 10 strikeouts and zero walks. "(Im) happy its over and happy we won," Price said. "Finally feel part of the team." On the season, Price is 11-8 with a 3.11 ERA. He also leads the majors in strikeouts (199) and has issued only 23 walks. The veteran southpaw has won both his starts against the Blue Jays this season, allowing only two earned runs over 15 1/3 innings, and is 15-2 lifetime in 19 matchups with Toronto. Mark Buehrle will get the call for Toronto. After a hot start to the season, hes come back down to earth in recent weeks and now sits with an 11-8 record and a 3.27 ERA. Buehrle has given up four earned runs or more in three of his last four starts, including on Aug. 5 in a loss to Baltimore when he lasted just four innings, allowing 10 hits, three walks and four runs. The 35-year-old lefty has a 3.60 ERA in 70 innings at Rogers Centre this season. In 35 career games (34 starts) against the Tigers, Buehrle is 18-10. MINSK, Belarus -- When Alex Burrows was on the ice in pain following a knee-on-knee hit from Italys Joachim Ramoser, it didnt look good. When he needed to lean on Brayden Schenn and Nathan MacKinnon to get off the ice, it was all too easy to fear the worst. A year after Team Canada lost Eric Staal to a sprained medial collateral ligament at the world hockey championship, it was something of a relief that Burrows did not suffer a knee injury. In announcing a one-game suspension for Ramoser, the International Ice Hockey Federation revealed the Canadian medical staffs diagnosis of a charley horse. Coach Dave Tippett said Saturday that Burrows was a game-time decision for Sundays showdown with Sweden. "A little better today," Tippett said after an optional practice at Chizhovka-Arena. "(Burrows) took steps forwards overnight, and doctors and trainers will work on him today and hopefully we can get him close tomorrow." Asked if he was confident the Vancouver Canucks forward would be able to play, Tippett responded: "Well see. Lets see where it is tomorrow, but certainly better than last night." Burrows did not return after the scary collision with 56 seconds left in the first period that Tippett and Italian coach Tom Pokel agreed was not intentional. The IIHF disciplinary panel agreed but added that Ramoser "endangered the safety of Burrows." "He did initiate contact illegally with his knee and must take responsibility for causing the injury to Burrows," the IIHF said in a statement. Told of Ramosers suspension Saturday, Tippett called it a tough play. "Its a knee-to-knee kind of hit," he said. "I dont think the kid meant to do it. Just when you miss by a little bit, those things happen." Burrows did not skate Saturday, but he was far from alone. Only four skaters -- defenceman Morgan Rielly and forwards Jonathan Huberdeau, Mark Scheifele and Sean Monahan -- took the ice along with goaltenders Ben Scrivens, James Reimer and Justin Peters. It was not clear which goaltender would start against Sweden in Canadas second-to-last preliminary game that very likely will determine first place in Group A. Reimer has a 2.27 goals-against average and .918 save percentage in two starts, while Scrivens has a 1.00 and .963. Sweden is Canadas biggest test before the quarter-final. Two players are back from the silver-medal-winning Sochi Olympic team -- forwards Gustav Nyquist of the Detroit Red Wings and Jimmie Ericsson. Goaltender Anders Nilsson of the New York Islanders has been phenomenal for Sweden, which has gotten seven points from former NHL forward Joakim Lindstrom. "Obviously were expecting a high-paced game, and theyve got some good, skilled players," said Cody Hodgson, who leads Canada with seven points and is tied for the tournament lead with six goals. Hodgson is thriving in part because hes healthy, and while some teammates are banged-up, Tippett thinks theyll be OK. Defenceman Braydon Coburn lost a few teeth in Fridays victory over Italy, and Troy Brouwer and Kevin Bieska also had mouth injuries. Defenceman Jason Garrison, who missed the game against Italy with illness, was doing better Saturday, according to Tippett. The flu bug has gone through some other teams in Minsk, but beyond Garrison it hadnt done the same to Canada. "Knock on wood it seems to be all right today," Tippett said. Even more fortunate for Canada is that Burrows seems to be OK. "It was a tough-looking hit, but hes been around a while," Tippett said. "He knows when he thinks he can get up and moving, and it was good to see him today a lot better than last night." JaVale McGee Nuggets Jersey . And I wanted to take this opportunity to share some of my experiences gained through International competition and the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan. Seven NHL referees and six linesmen will be assigned upcoming games in Sochi by the IIHF as part of their 28-man officiating roster comprised of 14 refs and 14 linesmen.LOS ANGELES -- Once he found the outside corner, everything went smoothly for Madison Bumgarner. His only hiccup led to a quick confrontation with Yasiel Puig. Bumgarner pitched eight superb innings and Brandon Crawford hit a two-run homer, leading the San Francisco Giants past the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 Friday night. "I felt better as the game went on," Bumgarner said. "I was making pitches and making adjustments. I was having a hard time getting the outside corner early on, but I got to where I could hit that spot the last two or three innings." San Franciscos 12th victory in 15 games was overshadowed, however, by the broken left thumb first baseman Brandon Belt sustained when he was hit by Paul Maholms first pitch of the second inning. Belt will be sidelined for at least six weeks, according to manager Bruce Bochy. The Giants were leading 3-0 when Puig homered to centre in the sixth, after taking a called third strike his previous time up and stranding Justin Turner at third base. As soon as Puig made contact, he flipped the bat away, walked a few feet toward first base and began a slow trot around the bases. "Honestly, I think Puig overreacted a little bit. I dont know," Dodgers teammate Scott Van Slyke said. "He felt like he had an unfair pitch thrown to him the previous time up, and then he acted like he got him back. But Puigs an emotional guy. Some people just have that fire in them when they play, and it comes out sometimes. I wouldnt necessarily say that its wrong or right. Its just that theres lots of different personalities in the world, and youve just got to learn to deal with them." Bumgarner walked toward the third base line and had a few choice words for Puig as he approached home plate. But the hostilities ended there with some quick action by plate umpire Will Little, who intercepted Bumgarner. "I was just congratulating him," Bumgarner said, tongue in cheek. "That was a really good swing. That was pretty impressive. I dont know why everybody got so mad. It escalated quickly for no reason. "I think he said, Thank you. Im not sure if he did. I dont speak Spanish very well. But its always a passionate series when you play the Dodgers, and its fun. No matter what the records are, either team could be 30 games out and its still going to be a big series just because its the Giants and Dodgers." Hanley Ramirez was the next batter and took a 1-1 pitch for a strike that had manager Don Mattingly chirping from the dugout. Little ejected Mattingly, who came running out to argue. Belt, who leads the Giants with nine homers, ran the bbases until the second inning ended but was replaced on defence by Joaquin Arias.dddddddddddd "When I looked at it, I said: Its not good. He couldnt move it, and it was just locked," Bochy said. "I had a bad feeling it was broken and that he was going to have to come out of the game. "Its the old bittersweet thing," he added. "It was a great game and a great performance by Bumgarner, so you appreciate that. But at the same time, we lost our first baseman. And thats a blow for us because of the job he does at first base and the fact that he hits in the heart of our order." Bumgarner (4-3) allowed a run and four hits with eight strikeouts en route to his second straight victory after three consecutive losses -- two of them by 2-1 scores against the Dodgers and Colorado. He is 5-1 with a 1.45 ERA in his last six starts at Dodger Stadium, and hasnt allowed more than two earned runs in any of them. "Hes good at missing just high, or just outside, or just inside," Van Slyke said. "Hes really tall and he throws hard. He has an idea of what he wants to do and his ball moves. And hes a competitor, so hes going to be tough for a lot of years." Sergio Romo pitched a perfect ninth for his 12th save in as many attempts. Maholm (1-3) gave up three runs, three hits and four walks in 5 2-3 innings. The left-hander is 0-4 with a 6.66 ERA in his last five starts against the Giants. Maholm got out of a first-inning jam by retiring cleanup hitter Mike Morse on a double-play grounder and matched zeros with Bumgarner until the fifth. Brandon Hicks walked with one out and Crawford drove the next pitch into the right-field pavilion for his fourth homer of the season and first in 117 career at-bats against the Dodgers to that point. Dodgers reliever Brandon League escaped a bases-loaded, none-out jam in the seventh when he fielded Hunter Pences comebacker to start a 1-2-3 double play and then retired Buster Posey on a fly to right. NOTES: Mattinglys ejection was his 13th as a manager and first this season. ... Puig extended his hitting streak to nine games, matching his longest as a rookie last season. ... Turner started at third base because of Juan Uribes sore right hamstring. ... It was the 12th time in the Dodgers last 15 meetings with San Francisco that they have scored fewer than four runs. ... Romos scoreless inning reduced the ERA of the Giants bullpen to a major league-best 1.75. ... Maholm, who has induced a major league-high 192 double-play grounders since the start of the 2006 season, hasnt had more than three strikeouts in any of his six starts this season. Andy Murray is prepared to defend his Madrid Open title, but there are big questions to be answered on Spains clay courts. Sky Live: Madrid Open Live on Sky Sports until May 8 With world No 1 Novak Djokovic joining the field as the clear favourite, Murray will have his work cut-out. The competition will also include the clay master Rafael Nadal and a host of up-and-comers.Sky Sports expert Barry Cowan answered four key questions... Can Murray beat Nadal on clay? Andy Murray (right) beat Rafa Nadal in last years Madrid final Barry said: Nadal to win. But Andy has an advantage by playing Rafa in Madrid. Rafa has won the title here before, but he would prefer to play clay court matches in Barcelona, Monte Carlo or Roma. Its because of the altitude. I remember a Davis Cup semi-final played in Madrid against the United States, Nadal was very vocal that he didnt want it played there. The game becomes quicker, the ball moves quicker, and you have less time. The big servers come into play. Murrays route to the final Possible future foes for British No 1 At this present stage with the way that Rafa is playing, only Djokovic is better. All the top guys are as comfortable on any of the surfaces. Andy has become very comfortable at moving on clay, when previously he was better on hard courts. He beat Rafa last year, but Rafa was poor. It will be harder this year because Djokovic is playing and Nadal is playing much better. Are Murray and Nadal poised for a successful clay campaign? Rafael Nadal beat Kei Nishikori to claim the Barcelona Open title Barry said: The way Andy played in Monte Carlo suggests he will have a great few weeks. This part of the year is easier for him than Indian Wells and Miami because hes looking forward to the French Open. He is a master of peaking. You only have to look at his Grand Slam record - he knows how to peak for the big events.I didnt really waiver on Nadal last year but I did this February - he played two tournaments in South America which were a real concern. He had worked so hard to push on this year, but it felt like he was putting himself under too much pressure. He had a lack of belief. He needed to back up his talent in Barcelona, and he certainly did.Its relentless now, the top guys will basically play all the way through from Madrid until the US Open with very little time off. Are Federers recurring injuries a concern? Roger Federer cant turn his back on recent injuries Barry said: The worry is that, once you reach his age, are your little niggles just covering for other injuries? Thats three already hes had this year, two injuries and an illness. As well as taking a toll on his body, it also means hes lacking in matches so he slips further and further behind the other guys who are playing more tennis. Federer withdraws Swiss great out of Madrid Open If you look at the glass half-full, its better to have an injury now than after June. Realistically in the last three or four years, his chances of winning the Australian Open or French Open are going because of the nature of the surfaces. The chances of winning Wimbledon and the US Open are a lot greater. Can Del Potro recapture past glory? Its seven years since Juan Martin Del Potro won the US Open Barry said: From what I saw at Indian Wells and Miami, hes a long way off. For Del Potro, its about playing and getting back onto the court. That wrist injury means he still hits far too many sliced backhands.Hes not going to be able to beat the big guys yet. But is that permanent? I can only judge through what I see during matches, and he cant hit over his backhand. Hes basically going into battle with two out of three weapons. He wont beat a top 10 player with only two weapons working. But hes hitting his backhand more, which is encouraging, and he clearly has rediscovered his passion to compete. However, the coach was hesitant on naming Newton the starter in case he begins to experience soreness in his back.I would say he is on target to start, Rivera said. He had a good day and took the reps he was supposed to.Newton was a full participant in practice Thursday, nine days after he was involved in a two-vehicle crash that left him hospitalized for one night with two fractures in his lower back.He declared himself pain-free after the workout. If I can play, we all know I want to play, Newton said. But at the end of the day I wont jeopardize what we have the opportunity to do just because of my selfishness to say, Oooh, Im a tough man.Unlike in past weeks when Newton was bothered by injuries and came right out and said definitely he wanted to play, the two-time Pro Bowler was more reserved about his playing status. He repeatedly said he didnt want to be a distraction.Derek Anderson started last week against Tampa Bay and led the Panthers to a 19-17 win. Anderson is 2-0 as the starter, but both wins have come against the 2-11 Buccaneers.Im fine either way it goes, Newton said of Riveras impending decision on the starting quarterback. I dont want this to be a distraction. We have our hands full getting prepared for a great team in Cleveland. We arrent worried about who will start at quarterback.ddddddddddddI think were both ready.Rivera said Newton probably answered the question in that manner because he probably didnt want to put any pressure on me — and I appreciate that.Newton is having a down year by his own standards, throwing for a career-low 2,812 yards with 16 touchdown passes and 11 interceptions while recovering from off-season ankle surgery and fractured ribs during the preseason.Rivera reiterated he wouldnt risk exposing Newton to injury if hes not ready to play. But he said all signs point to the 25-year-old making a quicker than expected comeback.Newton completed a 65-yard pass during practice on Thursday that Rivera called a thing of beauty. Rivera said Newton also made a leaping one-handed grab on Wednesday when tight end Greg Olsen threw a ball back to the quarterback following a play.Rivera said Newton reported to work Thursday feeling good after trainers put him through a tough day of work on Wednesday.Hes looked pretty good and now well see how he is on Friday, Rivera said. We increased his reps and did some different things with him today. They put him through a pretty rigorous workout.Rivera said he like to officially name a starter as soon as possible. The Panthers (5-8-1) are a half-game behind the New Orleans Saints in the NFC South with two games remaining in the season. They can win the division with two wins and a Saints loss.___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL___AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL Cheap Jerseys Store Jerseys NFL Cheap Cheap NFL Black Jerseys China Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Wholesale Wholesale Jerseys Camo China NFL Jerseys ' ' '

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks might have some choices to make when scripting last-second shots. Brooks drew up a play for Kevin Durant on Friday night, but it was Russell Westbrook that came through in the end. Westbrooks corner 3-pointer with 0.1 seconds left in overtime gave Oklahoma City a wild 113-112 victory over the Golden State Warriors. Brooks drew up the play to get Durant the ball, but the NBA scoring leaders floater missed with 12 seconds left. Officials called the ball out on Golden State and used replay to confirm the call. After the review, Serge Ibakas 15-foot jump shot missed the mark and the ball looked headed out of bounds before Thabo Sefoloshas diving save gave the Thunder one final try. Sefolosha found Westbrook, who took off one way, turned the other and drilled the 3-pointer over Harrison Barnes to give the Thunder the win. "When he tells people about out this one, he doesnt have to exaggerate it because theres no bigger fish story than what he did tonight," Brooks said of Westbrooks heroics. Westbrooks shot was reviewed as well but once again, replay sided with the Thunder. When Westbrook snagged the ball, there was no question he was going for the win. "Im not going to tie the game," Westbrook said. "Theres no need to tie the game. I did the same thing in Golden State but unfortunately it didnt work out for us." In that game on Nov. 14, it was the Warriors who came out ahead with a big last-second shot, when Andre Iguodalas fallaway jumper at the buzzer gave Golden State a 116-115 win. "It was a fortunate bounce for them," Golden States Stephen Curry said. "A lot of good things happened for them in that possession. Its frustrating for us tonight." Westbrook scored a season-high 34 points on 10-of-25 shooting, Durant added 25 and the Thunder won their sixth consecutive game overall and ninth straight at home to start the season. "That was fun," Durant said. "I was so excited for him. Its been a long time coming. Hes been working on that. He had that confidence to take that shot, so Im glad we won it. It was a fun game to be a part of." While Durant figures to get the majority of chances at game-winning shots, Westbrook is at least making Brooks think when he draws up plays in the final seconds. "Russell has the ability to make shots," Brooks said. "I look at it as Kevin and Russell have the ability to attract two guys on the ball." Ibaka continued his strong November with his third consecutive double-double, with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Curry had 32 points, hitting four 3-pointers, to lead the Warriors. Barnes added a career-high 26 points. The Thunder slowed down Golden States leading scorer, Klay Thompson, early. Thompson missed 11 of his first 12 shots and finished 5 of 19 from the floor. He hit just two of his nine 3-pointers. Durant had a chance to win it in regulation but missed a fadeaway jumper just before the buzzer. Durant helped the Thunder get back into the game after a quiet first three quarters, scoring 12 points in the fourth period. After the game, Brooks was looking forward to reliving the moment again. "Theres so many good moments I cant wait to watch it tonight," Brooks said. "These are the reasons were all in this, for moments that will last forever." NOTES: Ibakas third consecutive double-double is a career first. . Oklahoma Citys Kendrick Perkins dislocated his left ring finger late in the second quarter and did not return. ... Golden States Jermaine ONeal was called for a technical foul early in the second quarter after a brief altercation with Steven Adams following a foul call on Adams. . The 25-year-old McIlroy, who is from Northern Ireland, was eligible to play for either Ireland or Team GB when golf makes its return to the Olympics in Brazil for the first time since 1904.TORONTO – Chad Jenkins is living the life of the 25th man. On his fourth recall this season, hes been on charter planes and stayed in five-star hotels. Hes ridden buses along freeways and turnpikes and stayed in not so five-star hotels, which is the routine of minor league life. Sometimes, most of the time in fact, hes been a reliever. During his last stint in Buffalo, with the Triple-A Bisons, he was a starter. There was that time, shortly into the season, his recall was announced and then retracted because he hadnt spent the first 10 days on option to the minor leagues. Its been a whirlwind, to say the least. "Its funny, I think after the second send down this year a teammate of mine in Buffalo goes, I dont know how you do it. Id be so mentally wrecked I wouldnt know which way I was going," Jenkins told TSN.ca. "Its funny. I laugh, you know, there are times when it really gets to me and I have like a rough day and Im down and out." There are other days, too, like when he was traveling with Buffalo in Louisville, Kentucky. His parents had come to visit from their Atlanta-area home. Jenkins was in a bad mood, moping and struggling to accept the up and down nature of his role. The Bisons had a game that night and not long before first pitch, something clicked. "At the end of the day I realized that I get to play a sport for a living and no matter where I am Im healthy, my familys healthy and thats all that really matters," said Jenkins. He feels a part of this team this time round. Jenkins is pitching. He threw a clean inning on June 4 in Detroit, using his patented sinkerball to induce three groundball outs. The next day he left an out from his first career big league save, hurling two-and-a-third scoreless innings in relief of J.A. Happ. Fast forward five days, to Tuesday night, when Jenkins put up another three-and-a-third scoreless frames in relief of Happ. The Jays lost but Jenkins, as is the demand of the long reliever, stopped the bleeding and gave his team a chance to win. Thanks to his three outings since the last recall, his ERA has dropped from 9.00 to 2.79. "Im not a big stat rat but I dont like seeing my ERA in the nines and I had to sit on that for two weeks," said Jenkins. "Every opportunity I get, in the end, is to the help the team win but at the same time its like, a little pride in myself. I dont like seeing such a high number beside my name." Jenkins had made four starts for Buffalo prior to rejoining the Jays. Thrust into the bullpen, he was forced to rearrange his routine. "Whats tough is when I start, I pitch, day off, side, two days off and pitch again," said Jenkins. "Your body gets into a routine. You run long distance. I lift heavy weights because thats just how I like to work out. I get back here, I switch my lifting. I lift every other day, every two days, just trying to get my body going. I stretch a lot more." Hes doing his best to "preserve bullets," as pitchers will say. Jenkins has incorporated a number of mobility exercises, including the use of the foam roller to loosen up his core muscles. He doesnt need to throw morre.ddddddddddddHes been doing plenty of that. "Im getting hot it feels like every night," said Jenkins. "I know since the second day in Detroit Ive had one day when I havent thrown off a mound. Arms holding up great, I cant complain there and hopefully I can keep it going." Manager John Gibbons has been a vocal supporter of Jenkins. The 26-year-old former first round pick often is the odd man out because the Jays can send him to the minor leagues without first exposing him to irrevocable waivers. Jenkins doesnt have a hard fastball and isnt a strikeout pitcher. Despite being selected 20th overall in the 2009 draft, hes come to believe the cautionary tale he heard from a minor league teammate shortly after turning pro: its hard to make it to the big leagues; its even harder to remain in the big leagues. "I didnt really heed that warning," said Jenkins. "Now that Ive been racking up a lot of miles I know for a fact its hard to stay." Pillar optioned to Buffalo The Blue Jays sent down Kevin Pillar before Wednesday afternoons series finale with the Twins. The move seemed strange, although the purpose was two-fold. First, the club needs relief help with its two long men, Todd Redmond and Chad Jenkins, unavailable on Wednesday due to their recent workloads. Reliever Bobby Korecky fills the need and its likely only for one day. "The thinking was, weve been talking about it the last couple of days anyway, we havent faced many lefties lately and for this next, pretty much this whole road trip, even when we get back, we dont face a lefty starter," said manager John Gibbons. "Send him down and get him some at-bats instead of sitting out there rotting." Toronto embarks on a three-city, 10-game road trip, which starts in Baltimore on Thursday. The Orioles will throw four right-handers at the Jays. Based on the pitching matchups the Jays believe they will see, the Yankees and Reds will vers. When the Jays return home on June 23 to play New York, the Yankees will throw three right-handers. The Jays arent scheduled to see a left-hander until their home series against the White Sox, which begins on June 26. In the absence of Colby Rasmus, Pillar has been part of a platoon with Anthony Gose in centerfield. In 38 plate appearances this season, Pillar is hitting .243/.237/.324. Three of his nine hits have been doubles. Jays make hay Despite the Jays recent slide, four losses in five games, the club has wrapped up a stretch in which it played 16 of 19 games at home. Toronto went 13-6 in that span. The Jays have 29 games remaining before the All-Star Break, 20 of which will be played on the road. After the trip to Baltimore (four games), New York and Cincinnati (three each), the Jays will return home to play the Yankees (three games), the Chicago White Sox (four games) and the Milwaukee Brewers (two games). The pre-All-Star Break road trip will be a demanding one and will rack up the frequent flyer points. The Jays will go to Oakland for four games, to Anaheim for three games and then head east to play the Rays three times in Tampa Bay. TORONTO - Theo Fleury has come a long way.The former NHL star has seemingly escaped the chokehold of addiction and now wears a smile on his face. His mission today is to help others escape their emotional pain.Fleury chronicles his spiritual journey in a new book called Conversations With a Rattlesnake, co-written with therapist Kim Barthel.Helping is healing is a key theme. Its my purpose, Fleury writes. I honestly believe its more important than my hockey career. I was put on this earth to help. Fleury calls Barthel the Wayne Gretzky of therapy. She says Fleurys intellectual capacity is pretty extraordinary, shown by his ability to take in information, assimilate it and act on it.Now 46, Fleury still sees himself as a work in progress. But his life journey is no longer two steps forward, one step back. Its only a half-a-step back now or a quarter step back, Fleury said in a recent interview. Because I have tools.Nice, interjected Barthel.Whereas before I didnt have any tools, Fleury continued. I reached in my toolbox and I couldnt even build a square box ... because I didnt have anything. Now I have a few screws, a screwdriver. So I can build some stuff. The exchange, in the restaurant of a downtown hotel, reads like an excerpt from Conversations With a Rattlesnake. The book is written in the form of an extended conversation between Fleury and his therapist. Its the product of two and a half years of constant conversation, according to Barthel. The difficulty was I couldnt keep up with Theo, she said. He would change so fast, that all of the transcripts from the recordings, they were way out of date by the time I would get to them.In essence everything got written in about four months. But the transformational process was over a two-and-a-half year conversation — daily conversation.Barthel, who now teaches therapists, says it is not traditional therapy — if for no other reason that no one would have as much access to a therapist as Fleury did. It was also a collaborative, rather than a patient-therapist, relationship.Fleury evolved over the months, with the first 18 months leading up to the real meat of the discussion. The book comes in a challenging format. But the give-and-take between the two does show movement and how they reached their conclusions. Its like being a silent partner in a marathon self-help session.Chapter titles include Its Not My Fault, What We Say is More Than Words, Relentless Positivity, Shame Revisits and Walk With Thousands. Its the kind of book that will be well-worn, with more than a few highlighted passages, for some readers. We can all be a conduit for healing, said Fleury. He has proved to be just that. Barthel says people seem drawn to the former hockey player by his honesty and vulnerability, reasoning that if he can change his life so can they. Its actually miraculous, she said. I havent really got enough adjectives to describe it.People approach Fleury everywhere. He cant even go to the bathroom, said Barthel. We have had some incredible moments of reveals, said Fleury. It would just warm your heart that people look to you as somebody whos safe.Fleury, who has no complaints about being a people magnet, says part of his success is that people understand he is on their side. They know he not going to judge them or use their deepest darkest secrets against them. And he understands that part of helping others is not interjecting yourself. Youre just holding the space which allows them to talk about these things that have happened to them in their life, said Fleury. They dont want comments. If they want, theyll ask. Theyll ask for what they want. But you dont provide anything other than Im just going to hold the space for you.And occasionally asking the right question, adds Barthel.Barthel has her own rule of rule of thumb — not to offer advice unless someone asks three times.Fleurys autobiography, Playing with Fire, co-written by Kirstie McLellan Day, was released in 2009. An HBO Canada documentary, Theo Fleury: Playing with Fire, came out in 2012.Both detail his life spiral. The bleak image of Fleury standing outside a Chicago crackhouse he used to frequent is hard to forget. The two faces of Fleury are captured on the cover photo of Conversations With a Rattlesnake.Theres the black-and-white shot of Fleury from the past, his face covered with an unhealthy sheen of sweat. And next to it, a colour shot of a smiling Fleury today. One is a survival face that says Stay away, Fleury explains. The other says Come ....Ive got something you might want to try. These days there is a glow about Fleury, who says he has not had a drink or used drugs in nine years. He says his story of abuse is part of him, but does not define him.I dont wear the Scarlet Letter any more. Ive gotten rid of it. And thats why I want other people to come to the realization, he said.Because I look at my parents, I look at Graham James, I look at the lowest points of his life, I look at them as gifts now. Because without those gifts, I still have that face. With those gifts I have this face now.James was convicted in 2012 for hundreds of sexual assaults on Fleury and his cousin, Todd Holt, when they played for him in the Western Hockey League in the late 1980s and early 90s. An Appeal Court later extended his sentence to five years from two.Fleury and Barthel first met in May 2012 in Winnipeg at a presentation by Barthel. Fleury, who was also a speaker at the conference, called it a thunderbolt of brilliance. He walked up to an unsuspecting Barthel afterwards to say she had changed his life and that they were going to work together from then on.It was amazing. It was like you were explaining me inside and out and I didnt feel threatened by it, Fleury writes in the book. One hell of a liberating combination. I guess we should never underestimate the potential for finding help when we least expect it.Today they are friends before anything else, according to Fleury. But when you have a close friendship or relationship, you should have these kind of conversations, said Fleury. Those with little experience of therapists might be surprised to learn that the growth in the book seems on both sidesIf youre a really good therapist, its always a learning experience, said Barthel, who opens up about her past in the book. Part of the process is Healer, heal thyself.Fleury says Barthel helped him understand his trauma started early in life. Fleury believes he was shaped by an upbringing that included an alcoholic father and depressed mother. The book discusses in depth the chemistry of the brain and how the way you are treated can modify it.The book is about finally taking a look at that family of origin trauma where I understand why my brain is defective, Fleury said.Barthel jumps in again to warn against the use of defective as negative language. So would she call him out on it if that exchange had been in the book? I just did, she replied.Which tells you that therapy is for the rest of your life, Fleury added. Theres no beginning and theres no end. Theres only learning and experiences. His own brand of spirituality — a mixed bag of everything from organized religion to aboriginal spiritual teachings — has played a huge part in Fleurys road to recovery. For me spirituality was the way back to self, he said. I dont care what you believe in. Its not my journey and spirituality is very personal. I suggest that you try everything.Fleury, who has been married twice and has four children, who has just embarked on a new relationship. He is constantly on the move these days, be it speaking, accepting an honorary doctorate in Guelph or giving a speech in Helsinki. Fleury reckons he is on the road 200 days a year while Barthel is at 300.Fleury is also making music, writing and singing rockabilly/country songs for his band Theo Fleury and the Death Valley Rebels. A record and tour are in the works. Its all a far cry from his hockey days. But it somehow makes sense for Fleury. Because Im a big thinker, I always felt there was something greater than my hockey career, he said. I just didnt know what it was.Today he does. He knows his life purpose.Thats to share my story and be vulnerable, and not really care about what the world thinks about what Im doing. All I know is the feedback that I get back is more positive than negative. The former Calgary Flames, Colorado Avalanche, New York Rangers and Chicago Blackhawks forward still watches hockey but with not as much interest and not as much invested.Because someday I would like people to say Oh, Theo Fleury, the spiritual guy and philosopher. Playing at Wimbledon on his 24th birthday, the Vancouver player saved three match points before falling to Robin Haase 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 on Monday. Despite his loss, Pospisil was more than satisfied that the back pains which had made his life hell for the past six months have been fixed thanks to a diagnosis by a Prague doctor after months of uncertainty. Pain-free over the last two weeks, Pospisil said he now knows exactly what was bothering him and that the problem has become "completely manageable." Pospisil came to the All England Club after reaching the quarter-finals on grass last week in the Netherlands in his best career performance on the surface. "This was the first match of the year which felt normal," said the player who began to be bothered by his back in Chennai in early January. "Last week was the first week of the season in which I recognized myself on court in terms of competing. "I played quite well last week and today I just had a couple of mistakes and it didnt work out. "But this was definitely a normal match. Now I can focus on what I need to work on. Not playing much probably cost me today. My main goal noww is to stay healthy and finally be able to work on improving my game.dddddddddddd" On the womens side, Aleksandra Wozniak of Blainville, Que., was also eliminated, losing 6-1, 6-2 to Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia. The No. 31 seed was beaten in a battle lasting one hour 38 minutes to leave his Wimbledon main draw record at a 2013 win and two defeats. Pospisil hammered over 21 aces against Haase and produced 58 winners to 44 for his opponent, but he converted on only one of five break points. The Canadian dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker and levelled by winning the second before Haase took the lead two sets to one as he broke in the final game of the third. Haase earned another break for a 3-1 lead in the fourth set but was unable to close it out immediately as Pospisil salvaged three match points in the ninth game. But a cross-court forehand winner gave Haase one more winning chance, which he took when Pospisils volley went low into the net. Pospisil and Haase and split two meetings last season with a win apiece. Pospisil was one of three Canadian men in the singles draw, where eighth seed Milos Ranoic of Thornhill, Ont., heads the effort. Frank Dancevic of Niagara Falls, Ont., earned a lucky loser spot in the 128-man draw. MARSEILLE, France -- Top-seeded Richard Gasquet and defending champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga both reached the Open 13 quarterfinals with straight-sets wins on Wednesday. After the second-seeded Tsonga beat Nikolay Davydenko 7-6 (4), 7-6 (8), his French countryman Gasquet followed up with a 6-3, 6-3 win against Slovenias Blaz Kavcic. Gasquet did not face a single break-point and took his opponents serve three times. Earlier, the second-seeded Tsonga, who had 19 aces, improved to 4-2 in career head-to-heads against the Russian who reached a career-high ranking of third. Davydenko saved one match point with a forehand pass down the line, but Tsonga clinched victory with the next when Davydenkos forehand hit the net. "Its never easy against him, hes a great player whos won a lot of titles," the 28-year-old Tsonga said. "Im trying to get my bearings again, which is why I was so happy to win." Tsonga next plays either sixth-seeded Edouard Roger-Vasselin of France or Ukraines Sergiy Stakhovsky, while Gasquets quarterfinal opponent is either fifth-seeded Ivan Dodig of Croatia or Germanys Tobias Kamke. "I didnt play well last time (in Rotterdam). But you shouldnt forget that, and use the experience," said Tsonga, referring to his straight-sets loss to Croat Marin Cilic in the second round of the ABN Amro tournament. Having made 296 appearances for the Hornets and played 403 times for the Reds, he is a legend at both clubs. Adam Bate spoke to former team-mates and coaches to assess just what made Barnes so special… Barry Endeans goal won Watford an FA Cup quarter-final against Bill Shanklys Liverpool in 1970. Tommy Mooneys winner gave Watford their first-ever points at Anfield in 1999. In the most recent meetings last season, both sides won their respective home encounters. But for many, Liverpool versus Watford means only one thing - the brilliance of John Barnes. Its not often that a player makes the all-time best XI at two different clubs but theres no disputing Barness status. He is widely regarded as the best player to pull on a Watford shirt and is in the reckoning for that title at Liverpool too. He came seventh in an internet poll looking at 100 players who shook the Kop but one Reds great ranks him rather higher than that. Jamie Carragher says Liverpool are the real deal this season Former Liverpool captain Phil Thompson was a coach at the club during Barness early years at Anfield and saw up close what the winger was capable of doing. Thompson tells Sky Sports: For me he was one of the best three players ever to play for Liverpool, with Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard, which is high praise given the great players weve had. For me he was one of the best three players ever to play for Liverpool, with Kenny Dalglish and Steven Gerrard, which is high praise given the great players weve had. Phil Thompson on John Barnes Barness life began in Jamaica but it was in the less exotic environs of Watford that his journey to stardom began in earnest. Even before hed turned up for pre-season training in 1981, talk of his vast potential was spreading. Wed heard rumours of this kid that the club had acquired, remembers Luther Blissett, Watfords star striker then and the clubs all-time top scorer now. This skinny kid turned up for pre-season and soon showed us all what an athlete he was. There was nothing any of us could beat him at and this was a 17-year-old boy. He was exceptional in terms of fitness but we were all thinking, Lets see what he can do when the football comes out. As it turned out, there was pretty much nothing that he couldnt do with a football at his feet. Barnes debuted at Watford in 1981 and went on to appear almost 300 times Blissett, now 58, has seen a thing or two in the game. Ask him to think of the best players of his era and there are mentions for England team-mates Glenn Hoddle and Bryan Robson. Michel Platini springs to mind, an opponent during Blissetts time with AC Milan. But it all comes back to Barnes. You always think people are exaggerating but he really was that good, he tells Sky Sports.I remember one of Johns first games. It was against Norwich. He picked the ball up on the left side and went at the full-back. He rolled the ball towards him with the sole of his foot and then rolled it back the other way and went past him. It was one of those moments where you just thought, Wow, did I just see that? To do that to an experienced pro at that age… Barness trickery on the wing helped Watford to the 1984 FA Cup final Watford were already on a roll having come up from the fourth tier under Graham Taylor, but in Blissetts words, it was Barnes who added something extra that the team was missing. They won promotion to the top flight as runners-up in the youngsters first season and beat Manchester United on their way to a League Cup quarter-final too.United boss Ron Atkinson was impressed and immediately tipped them to go all the way to Wembley. It would take a couple more years before they made it there, but what was a memorable cup scalp for the club at the time would become common-place before long. In 1982/83, Watfords first ever season of top-flight football, they stunned everyone by finishing second behind Liverpool.Barnes was immense. Still only a teenager, he scored 10 league goals of his own that season but created many more. We already had Nigel Callaghan on one wing and with John on the other there wasnt another team in the country that had two players like that in wide areas, says Blissett. For a striker, it meant opportunities. He took 27 of them to finish as the top scorer in all four divisions. Barnes in action against USSR in 1984 - the year of his famous Maracana goal Blissett promptly moved to Milan but it was Barnes who went global. He might not have been the first black player to play for England but he remains the best and his slaloming goal against Brazil in the Maracana in 1984 is arguably the finest of them all. He just got better and better, says Blissett. In 1987, just days after Taylor left for Aston Villa, Barnes agreed a £900,000 move to Liverpool. It was the right move at the right time. The beauty about John going to Liverpool at that time was that he had the experience, adds Blissett. John was pretty rounded by the time he left. He was quick and had great endurance but by then he had strength and power too. Everything about him improved, so when he went to Liverpool that is what elevated him above everyone else.It just exploded for him. Rather than playing with three or four very good players, he was now playing with three or four world-class players and a whole team of very good players. It was frightening and John just fitted in. It was like he was brought up to play in that team. The first two or three years there were just phenomenal. Barnes was the outstanding player in English football in the late 1980s Already a top team, Barnes made them better. English clubs might have been banned from Europe but that Liverpool side would surely have been a match for the continents best. John Aldridge stepped up following Ian Rushs brief departure and the signings of Peter Beardsley and Ray Houghton added a new dimension. And yet, Barnes still stood out.I was reserve-team coach when John was at Liverpool, recalls Thompsson.dddddddddddd I remember going down to Coventrys old ground Highfield Road when he and Beardsley were in their pomp and saying to Kenny Dalglish after the game that I would have paid to watch him. I would have happily paid at the turnstiles and sat in the stands drooling with the other fans.He was one of those players that just excited you every time he got the ball. He had the ability to pick out a pass, a great first touch and could obviously dribble. There was something Brazilian in the way he played the game, like a downhill skier, the way he glided in and out of defenders. Liverpool won the league in his first season, with Barnes picking up the PFA and FWA awards. Barnes won the league title in 1987/88 - his first season at Liverpool The devastation of Hillsborough overshadowed his second season, one that looked to be on course for a double, and subsequent events had given rise to the view that things were unravelling for the club. The next league title, picked up in 1989/90, remains Liverpools last. It was the end of their era of dominance. But it didnt feel that way at the time. Barnes, in particular, was better than ever. This was the season of the 9-0 win over Crystal Palace. But there was also an 8-0 FA Cup win over Swansea. Home and away, the Reds put nine past Chelsea and seven past Manchester City. Everton were beaten at Anfield and Goodison Park with Barnes scoring in both games. Indeed, he was Liverpools top scorer that season - finishing second only to Gary Lineker in the country.Once again, Barnes was honoured by the Football Writers Association. Take a look at the other players to pick up that award more than once and its a clue to his level. Sir Tom Finney, Sir Stanley Matthews, Danny Blanchflower and Dalglish were the only men to do it before Barnes. Lineker, Thierry Henry and Cristiano Ronaldo are the only ones who have done it since. Barnes on Italia 90 John Barnes discusses his memories of the 1990 World Cup. If there was a disappointment, it was at international level. His involvement at the 1986 World Cup was restricted to just 16 minutes of the quarter-final against Argentina, during which time he still came close to upstaging Diego Maradona, laying on a goal for Lineker and almost setting up another. The subsequent European Championship was a failure as England lost all three games.Barnes finally got his chance to impress at a World Cup in 1990 but had a goal wrongly disallowed against Belgium and was injured by the time of Englands semi-final penalty exit. By 1995, hed picked up 79 caps and was being viewed as no more than a qualified success - a victim of both scandalous racism and the ludicrous expectations that followed his first international goal.It was a big burden for him to carry after scoring that goal against Brazil in Maracana but he carried it gracefully, adds Thompson. That was the most impressive thing about the man, he was so humble and always played the game with a smile on his face. Barnes adapted his game in later years to become an effective holding midfielder In his later career, Barness good character assumed greater significance as he was asked to take on a senior role at the club. He eventually inherited the captaincy from Rush but not before inspiring a new generation. He played alongside Steve McManaman and Robbie Fowler, while Michael Owens first start also happened to be Barness last game for Liverpool.Jamie Redknapp scored in that game at Sheffield Wednesday in May 1997 and got to play in midfield with Barnes on almost 200 occasions. He remains grateful for the support he received during his formative years. When I signed for Liverpool they were the dominant force in football so there were obviously some strong characters in that dressing room, Redknapp tells Sky Sports. As a 17-year-old boy, youre wide eyed and extremely nervous. Youre looking for a bit of support and for people to take you under their wing. Thats exactly what John did. Ill never forget how much guidance he gave me. He was just a classy guy. They say never to meet your heroes but it was the complete opposite with John. He was the one I really wanted to meet and he was brilliant with me. He was the hero of that era. The best player in the country and one of the best players in the world. Jamie Redknapp on John Barnes When I was about 21, I started to get some real belief in what I was doing. Wed just beaten Blackburn and Id scored. We were sat in the bath afterwards and he just turned to me and said Id play for England soon. It hadnt crossed my mind that I was anywhere near that level. But he just told me to keep going. A few weeks later I was picked in the squad. He just knew football. If you did something good hed be the first to tell you that youd done well, but if you didnt then hed let you know as well. It fulfilled a dream in playing alongside him. I cant lie, I had pictures of John Barnes all over my wall when I was a kid. He was the player that I loved watching. He was the hero of that era. The best player in the country and one of the best players in the world. With a 10-year age gap between them, that era was coming to an end by the time that Redknapp was involved. Barnes had to convert from dazzling dribbler to holding midfielder. I dont think it was what he wanted because he was so good going forward, says Redknapp. But you cant be that marauding winger forever. You have to change your game and the Achilles injury had affected him. Liverpool vs Watford November 6, 2016, 1:30pm Live on Get Sky Sports Get a Sky Sports pass It stopped him being explosive. But he was so good tactically, it was easy for him to make the change. I think I can count on two hands the amount of times he gave the ball away in the four or five years that I played alongside him. I used to love it. It was an education really. He perhaps wasnt at his absolute peak, but the way he used to move the ball never changed. He was so skilful. He was a good reader of the game too. He could intercept passes and was spot on tactically. He was also very good in the air. He was just the complete footballer. It was all so natural. There wasnt really a weakness. He could even tackle. Jamie Carragher also claimed that he was the best finisher hed seen. He used to just caress the ball into the corners, says Redknapp. It was a gift.It was a gift. That just about sums it up. So where does Barnes rank? He was the best that I played with and I didnt play with him at his peak, says Redknapp. Id still say that he was my favourite Liverpool player. When Liverpool host Watford on Sunday, therell be many more at Anfield who share that opinion. Sao Paulo, Brazil - The World Cup kicks off in style today as host nation Brazil battles Croatia in the opening match of Group A play at the Arena de Sao Paulo. Follow all the action live on TSN Radio 1050 in Toronto, 690 in Montreal, 1260 in Edmonton and on TEAM 1410 beginning at 4pm et/1pm pt. As the host country, the pressure is squarely on the shoulder of the Brazilian squad to make good on their status as pre-tournament favorites and win their sixth World Cup title. The key for Brazil will be how manager Luiz Felipe Scolari does with keeping his young team on an even keel in front of their home crowd. Leading the star-studded Brazilian team is 22-year-old Neymar, who figures to be one of the faces of the tournament. The Barcelona man is viewed as the future of the Brazilian national team, and he made quite an introduction for himself at last summers Confederations Cup, scoring four goals in the tournament and helping Brazil to a 3-0 win over Spain in the final, which earned him recognition as the best player in the competition. Experienced players such as Ronaldinho, Kaka and Robinho were left off the Confederations Cup roster, and were replaced by youngsters Fred and Hulk, who will help Neymar with the scoring onus. Scolari has a plethora of options in midfield with creative players like Chelsea trio Ramires, Oscar and Willian, while Inter Milans Hernanes is another offensive option. Defensively, experienced goalkeeper Julio Cesar will anchor a group that includes David Luiz, Thiago Silva and Dante as options in the middle, while full backs Dani Alves and Marcelo give the team plenty going forward in two- way roles. Croatia, meanwhile, returns to the worlds biggest footballing stage after missing the 2010 event in South Africa. Croatian head coach Niko Kovac is armed with a talented roster that certainly has a fighting chance to reach the knockout stage, despite a difficult draw. Kovacs club is led by a strong midfield which contains Real Madrids Luka Modric and Sevillas Ivan Rakitic. The former Tottenham man, Modric, will be responsible for generating offense from his midfield position and feeding the ball forward to players like Mario Mandzukic and Ivica Olic. The presence of Rakitic will help Modric in the middle of the field, while both Mandzukic and Olic will be responsible for putting away the chances. Olic will have to carry the offensive load against Brazil, however, as Mandzukic will be unavailable after he was sent off in the clubs qualifying victory over Iceland. Croatia will have one big miss in midfield as Niko Kranjcar will not feature in the tournament due to a hamstring injury. Kranjcar has totaled 16 goals in 81 international appearances, and his experience will be missed in a midfield short on depth. Captain Darijo Srna anchors the back line with considerable international experience, having been capped 110 times for his country. Hell need to keep his defenders organized and clam on the ball against the likes of Brazil and Mexico if the side is to reach the knockout round for the first time since 1998. Brazil hosted the World Cup once before, in 1950, and that team was also expected to hoist the trophy, but were upset by Uruguay in the final. That defeat is still talked about in Brazil today, so the current team will aim to make sure they get off to a winning start. Bryan Rust Penguins Jersey . OAKLAND, Calif. -- Stephen Curry scored 24 points and dished out nine assists, and the Golden State Warriors forced a decisive Game 7 by outlasting the Los Angeles Clippers 100-99 Thursday night. Andre Iguodala added 15 points and Draymond Green had 14 points and 14 rebounds for the Warriors, handing Los Angeles one more obstacle to overcome in a week full of them after Clippers owner Donald Sterling earned a lifetime ban from the NBA for his racist remarks. The finale of the first-round series will conclude Saturday night in Los Angeles. The Warriors limited big men Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan even after centre Jermaine ONeal left with a sprained right knee in the second quarter. The Clippers simply ran out of time in the closing minute, missing three shots before Matt Barnes made a 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds to play. Los Angeles fouled Curry, who missed both free throws. Green grabbed the rebound as time expired, touching off a confetti-filled celebration throughout the gold-shirt wearing sellout crowd of 19,596, which packed an unusually warm Oracle Arena that rocked and roared throughout. Barnes finished with 18 points and 11 rebounds, Griffin had 17 points and nine rebounds before fouling out, and Jordan had 19 boards and nine rebounds for the Clippers, who are trying to win just their third playoff series since Sterling bought the franchise in 1981. Clippers point guard Chris Paul appeared hampered by the strained left hamstring that has bothered him all series. He crouched down and held his knees during stoppages, often wincing in pain. He had nine points, eight assists and five rebounds. With the stakes higher than theyve been all season, the teams traded blows in a fast and physical game that often featured more fouls than flamboyant plays. ONeal appeared to take the worst one, spraining his right knee when Glen "Big Baby" Davis lowered his shoulder and crashed into him while going for a rebound in the second quarter..dddddddddddd ONeal lay in pain until limping to the locker with the help of teammates. He did not return. Green filled the void for a Warriors front line already missing two centres, including starter Andrew Bogut, who has sat out the series with a fractured right rib. Greens physical play inside highlighted a game that officials had to constantly control. The teams combined for 31 fouls in the first half and 52 for the game. Griffin and J.J. Redick, and Golden States David Lee all fouled out in the fourth quarter. The teams kept things just as close on the scoreboard as on the court. Los Angeles led 51-48 at the half, while the Warriors went up 70-67 through three quarters. The Warriors began to pull away when Iguodala hit a corner 3-pointer in front of the Clippers bench, falling to the floor after drawing Griffins sixth foul with 2:31 to play. Iguodala strutted down court and gave a low-hand slap to Green as the crowd roared to its feet with Golden State up 96-89, but the celebration would have to wait. The Clippers came back quickly, cutting Golden States lead to two on a 3-pointer by Jamal Crawford and a layup by Barnes. Both teams missed several shots in the final minute, especially Los Angeles. The Clippers missed three straight shots -- and corralled three rebounds -- before Barnes hit the 3 with 1.1 seconds remaining to trim Golden States lead to one. Los Angeles had no time left for one more shot, forcing a much-anticipated finale between rising Pacific Division rivals. The Clippers and Warriors have played 10 games this season. Each team has won five. NOTES: The Warriors had lost seven straight elimination games since Sleepy Floyd scored 51 points to lead Golden State past the Lakers in Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals on May 5, 1987. ... How can we make the greatest game in the world even better? Simple. Sort out the scrum. I am fed up with the amount of down-time it takes just to get the ball in and out. Secondly, get the hooker to hook the ball. For me, it is a very simple, strict set of instructions to the man in the middle with the whistle. However, referees are not applying the law. I will take you back to the start of the season, round one of the Top 14, Bordeaux v Racing. The referee that day was Pascal Gauzere and in the first two scrums, he penalised each side for feeding. I nearly dropped the microphone. The penny has finally dropped, laws are being implemented, the scrum is back, the referee is having no nonsense, he is in charge. Japan made sure they got the ball away as quickly as possible from the scrum against South Africa However, for the rest of the game, we reverted back to the usual dross. Scrum-halfs rolling the ball to the No 8 and numerous resets. This has also been the case in the Aviva Premiership and Guinness PRO12.Why do they allow this to happen? A quick hooked ball with the 8 in channel one is such a weapon. How did Japan beat South Africa in the World Cup? Pride, passion and channel one ball. How do referees continuously get away with not applying the scrum laws? How do well-paid scrum coaches get away with their hookers not being able to swing their leg? If they did, we would have a quicker game with less time wasted meaning more ball in play time.It is not that difficult to sort out. The players still call the ref Sir. The equalizer came after Robbie Keanes header two minutes into stoppage time appeared to give the Galaxy the win. Los Angeles peppered Portland goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts with shots all game, but couldnt break through until Keanes fifth goal of the season. Valeris goal was his second of the year. "We fell asleep at the end of the game," Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said. "A bunch of guys can do better on the play. But we played very well today, should have walked away with three points." Galaxy midfielder Landon Donovan remained at 134 career MLS goals, tied with Jeff Cunningham for the league record. Neither team was satisfied with the draw. Portland, which finished with the best regular season record in the Western Conference last season, has only one victory so far this year, last weekends late 3-2 win over D.C. United. "Bottom line is, weve not been good enough," Timbers coach Caleb Porter said. Arena and Keane were upset that Portlands Donovan Nagbe wasnt called for a foul on Juninho on a breakaway before Valeris game-tying goal. "Some poor decisions we have to accept, and take responsibility ourselves as well, because the last minute of the game you shouldnt be conceding a goal," Keane said. The Galaxy were coming off a 1-0 loss to the Colorado Rapids last weekend, snapping a four-match unbeaten streak. Los Angeles was without centre back Omar Gonzalez, who hurt his left knee in the first half of the loss at Colorado. Hes being held out as a precaution so that he can take part in the U.S. national teams training for the World Cup. GGonzalez and Donovan are expected to report Wednesday to the U.ddddddddddddS. teams training camp at Stanford. Portland was hurt early when defender Michael Harrington left the match with an apparent right ankle injury. The ankle had bothered him early this week. Later in the game Portland midfielder Diego Chara came off after what appeared to be a left hand injury, replaced by Ben Zemanski. "For me its just disappointing," Timbers defender Jack Jewsbury said. "Were better than we showed today." The Timbers looked to have a chance in the 34th minute but Valeri couldnt get a shot off as he charged Galaxy goalkeeper Jaime Penedo. Most eyes were on Donovan, who looked to have a shot in the box in the 39th minute before Chara stole the ball. Donovan is scoreless in all seven league games hes played this season. Hes had four goals and three assists in seven career matches against the Timbers dating back to 2011 when Portland joined MLS. "Landon was the best player on the field today," Arena said. "Played very well. Good to see." Futty Dansos header for Portland in the 59th minute hit the far post as the sellout crowd at Providence Park gasped. Ricketts tipped a hard shot from Galaxy forward Keane in the 82nd minute, but couldnt stop Keanes second shot in stoppage time. There were five total minutes of extra time at the end of the match. "We certainly deserved to win today, theres no question about that," Keane said. The Galaxy finished with 21 shots to Portlands 10. "We can fault the referee as much as we want, but we were still the team in control at the end of the game where we could have denied a goal-scoring opportunity and didnt get that done," Arena said. An initial physical exam showed no evidence of sinus cancer three months after the former Buffalo Bills quarterback completed radiation and chemotherapy treatments, Dr. Peter Costantino said in a release issued by New York Citys Lenox Hill Hospital on Wednesday. "The treatments have so far completely eliminated Mr. Kellys pain, and his level of function has essentially returned to normal," said Costantino, who heads the hospitals head and neck institute. "Further, on physical examination, there is no evidence of the cancer." The statement was issued a day after Kelly visited the hospital for a follow-up examination. Costantino said a series of tests over the next week will determine if further treatments are necessary. "It is possible that no further treatment will be required," he said. Kelly had surgery in June 2013 to remove cancerous cells in his upper jaw. The cancer then spread to his sinus in March. Kellys wife Jill welcomed the news in a note posted on her Instagram account. "We haave come away from our checkup visit in NYC encouraged and hopeful," she wrote.dddddddddddd She added that the follow-up tests will include biopsies to confirm the cancer has been eradicated. Kelly was in a weakened state following a two-month barrage of treatments last spring. In one of his first public appearances following the treatments, Kelly surprised Bills players and staff by showing up to one of their final minicamp practices in June. Kelly was then strong enough to attend the Pro Football Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Canton, Ohio, three weeks ago, when former Bills teammate, receiver Andre Reed, was among the seven inductees. Reed closed his speech by having Kelly throw him a pass on stage. A day later, Kelly served as the Bills honorary captain before their preseason-opening game against the New York Giants. Kellys battle with cancer has been a public one, and attracted thousands of supporters and well-wishers on social media. "Kelly Tough" and "Prayers For JK" have become catch phrases and hashtags on Twitter by those voicing their support for Kelly. DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Tony Stewart is 20 pounds lighter and has a titanium rod in his surgically repaired right leg. As far as hes concerned, those are the only major changes since he broke two bones in his leg in an August sprint-car crash. So when the green flag drops Saturday night at Daytona International Speedway for his first race since the accident, Stewart believes it will be the same old "Smoke" behind the wheel. "Were not going to need a backup driver," boasted Stewart, who is scheduled to be in the race car for the first time Friday for 105 minutes of practice for the exhibition Sprint Unlimited. "I feel good enough that Im confident were not going to have to worry about anything," he added. "Weve planned for anything that we think might or could go wrong, and when I say go wrong, its not anything thats going to take us out of the race car. Its just a matter of making everything as comfortable as possible." Stewart has not raced in more than six months, an unheard of amount of time off for a driver who makes his money racing in NASCAR yet crisscrossed the country cramming 50 or more weeknight events into his year-round schedule. Six-time champion Jimmie Johnson isnt dismissing Stewarts chances of making a successful return. "Tonys a guy that when hes motivated, he can do anything," Johnson said. "And his motivation and desire to get in the car is probably higher than its been since he was a little kid, so it could be really dangerous for all of us, you know what I mean?" Last August, Stewart was leading with five laps remaining at Southern Iowa Speedway when a lapped car spun in front of him, causing Stewart to hit that car and flip several times. Stewarts time sidelined was certainly difficult, enhanced by the pain from his broken leg. He had two surgeries for the breaks, then a third to treat an infection. He was flat on his back, confined to the first-floor bedroom of his longtime business manager, where he was forced to lay with his leg elevated above his heart. When there was Stewart-Haas Racing business to address, team personnel did it at his bedside. Stewart required an ambulance to get to his doctor appointments, and when he finally was able to get out of bed, he needed a wheelchair to get around. And when Stewart -- a driver SHR vice-president of competition Greg Zipadelli referred to as "Superman" in the days after his accident -- finally made an appearance at the race track, it was on a motorized scooter. Nobody was comfortable seeing the three-time NASCAR champion so restricted. Many wondered if hed ever be the same. Not Stewart. "Right off the bat, the surgeon, the therapists, theyve all said, Youre going to have 100-per cent recovery," Stewart said. "With that, from Day 1, it took the doubt out." Any questions about getting back into a race car were erased, and Stewart turned his attention to his recovery. He wondered when hed be 100 per cent -- doctors have told him it will take a year, and he said this week his leg is only 65-per cent healed -- and when the pain would subside. He asked doctors if hed always have some sort of lingering pain, and he threw himself into a tough rehabilitation program. As he progressed and moved closer to Fridays practice sessions, his SHR team built a module that includes a seat, steering wheel, steering column and pedals so Stewart could sit and hold the pedal down for 20 minutes to simulate the pressure of having his foot on the throttle. New teammate Kevin Harvick ordered Stewart a special pad that hangs off the steering wheel that will prevent his knees from banging into the steering column. Now his peers wait to see how Stewart will drive. Harvick said they attended a sponsor appearance together this week and when they left, Stewart "was like a crazed lunatic. You could see that look in his eye. He looked at me and said, Im ready to ... race!" A driver who has excelled in races because of his ability to feel the car, some have wondered if the injury has taken that talent from Stewart. He doesnt believe the broken leg has robbed him of anything. "When you hear the quote, Its a seat-of-the-pants feel, you feel it in your core," he said. "Everything that is processed through your brain is between your core as far as feeling whats going on. Your hands and arm are feeling pressure in the steering wheel. But as far as from your legs down, youre not really feeling that sensation. Its more of what your brain is telling your legs to do. "If we had to have an area to have an injury, my right leg was probably the one." Denny Hamlin struggled all last season after missing five races with a fractured vertebra in his lower back. But Hamlin cited Stewarts superior talent as reason why Stewart wont have similar issues. CLEVELAND -- Shawn Marion wanted another shot at an NBA title. Hell get it playing with LeBron James. The free agent forward has agreed to a contract with the Cavaliers, a person familiar with the negotiations told The Associated Press on Sunday. The 36-year-old Marion informed the Cavs this weekend that he will take a minimum deal and play for them next season, said the person who spoke condition of anonymity because the contract has not been finalized. Marion also had interest in signing with the Indiana Pacers, who is looking for help after losing Paul George for the season with a broken leg. ESPN.com first reported Marions agreement with the Cavs. The Cavs can only offer Marion a deal worth $1.4 million because theyre out of room under the salary cap. A four-time All-Star, Marion gives Cleveland another veteran with post-season experience to compliment James, who is returniing to the Cavs intent on winning the citys first pro championship since 1964.dddddddddddd The team has previously signed shooters Mike Miller and James Jones, who won two NBA titles with James in Miami. Cleveland is also on the brink of adding All-Star forward Kevin Love, who is expected to come over from Minnesota in a trade on or after Aug. 23. While Love gives the Cavs size, another shooter and an excellent passer, he has never played in a post-season game as a pro. Marion, on the other hand, has played in 103 NBA playoff games. He won a title as a role player with Dallas in 2011 and spent the past five seasons with the Mavericks. Considered a strong defensive player, hes averaged 15.8 points and 9.0 rebounds during his career, which began with Phoenix in 1999. Marion was with the Suns for nine-plus seasons and worked with Cavs general manager David Griffin. The Detroit Lions could be without Calvin Johnson this weekend. Lions coach Jim Caldwell said Friday if Johnsons ankle doesnt improve by Sunday, there is a chance he wont play against the Buffalo Bills. That possibility always exists, Caldwell said. Just kind of depends on how one progresses during the course of the week. There are some times that they move forward enough that they wont have any significant setbacks and other times you dont feel that way. You have to wait until the end of the week and react accordingly. Johnson missed the first two practices of the week but returned Friday, just as he did last week. Sam Reinhart Jersey . NEUBRANDENBURG, Germany -- Germanys Juergen Braehmer unanimously outpointed Marcus Oliveira to take the vacant WBA world light heavyweight title on Saturday night. The judges scored it 115-112, 117-110, 117-110 in favour of the 35-year-old Braehmer, a former WBO champion, who withstood a late barrage from the previously undefeated American in the last round to claim his second world title. The title had been vacant since Kazakhstans Beibut Shumenov was declared the WBAs "super" world light heavyweight champion. Braehmer improved to 42-2 (31 KOs), while the 34-year-old Oliveira dropped to 25-1-1, (20 KOs). The fight had a late start following a disagreement over which boxer should enter the ring first. Oliveira promoter Don King insisted his fighter went second as he had a higher ranking than Braehmer..dddddddddddd. The Germans promoter, Nisse Sauerland, called the delay "a joke." Braehmer eventually went first and Oliveira subsequently emerged to a chorus of boos and whistles from the crowd. The bout got underway after midnight local time. Neither fighter enjoyed a clear advantage in the opening rounds, though Braehmer was more proactive and appeared to trouble Oliveira when he caught him cleanly with a powerful right in the fifth round. Oliveira went down on one knee after an apparent low blow in the 10th, but the referee ruled it was a legal blow, and Braehmer pushed his advantage in the next round as the crowd sang in support. Oliveira went for the knockout in a furious final round, but the German hung on to take the title. "Braehmer did an excellent job," King said. Daniel Murphy couldnt deal with the changeup when he struck out with runners on second and third to end the fifth inning. "I dont think I swung at a single strike the at-bat I struck out," Murphy said. "He threw the ball well to me, and I helped him out." Murphy wasnt alone.
