Stop the bleeding. Toronto FC has done just that with consecutive positive performances, culminating on the weekend with an impressive 3-2 win at the Columbus Crew. Back-to-back wins on the road couldnt come at a better time for TFC. Two wins on the road, at that, reaffirming Toronto as a contender. Questions were beginning to be raised about Toronto FCs credentials as true challenger in Major League Soccers Eastern Conference. Just one win in eight coming out of the MLS World Cup break would always ramp up that conversation, promoting negative sentiment. It was a frustrating July for Ryan Nelsen and co. with the team showing better on the field in terms of overall play, with results failing to follow. Fortunately, while not playing well over the opening months of the season, Toronto FC managed to pick up points, building a cushion and lessening the blow of a difficult month. Toronto FC is back on track. A visit to the woeful Montreal Impact brought three points 11 days ago. Saturdays trip to Columbus was likewise fruitful. Luke Moores winner in the 84th-minute capped off another fine performance, where TFC persevered despite the Crew twice equalizing. Through it all, Toronto FC remains third in the Eastern Conference, five points up on sixth-place Columbus and with at least a game in hand on all others in and around the top five in the conference, battling for playoff spots. Here are five thoughts on Toronto FC coming off their most recent win: 1) Goal-scoring Gilberto – Make it goals in back-to-back matches and three in his last four starts for the often criticized Brazilian striker. Its plain to see Gilberto is finally full of the confidence he lacked early this season. Gilbertos athleticism and potential have always been ubiquitous. His misfiring ways and, oftentimes, frustrating carelessness on the ball brought out the critics. It seems the transition period to MLS is firmly behind him and now is the time to prosper. Recent weeks have been kind to Gilberto as he has battled back to fitness, finally finding form. Injured captain and central defender Steven Caldwell (@stevocaldwell) took to Twitter post-match Saturday to praise Gilberto, writing "I dont like to single someone out, but I thought Gilberto was tremendous tonight. What a win!" MLS onlookers agree with Caldwells assessment with Gilberto being named to MLS Team of the Week. Gilbertos recent form softens the blow of Jermain Defoe out of the line-up (groin). Further competition up front is on the horizon with Bright Dike back training after having missed the first five months of the season (Achilles). Nelsen has been treading lightly, preferring to keep Gilberto out of the starting XI in preference of Moore. Its Nelsens team after all, and he should be able to do whatever he deems best for the team, but there have to be internal pressures to play the high-priced off-season acquisition. The argument is becoming irrelevant at this point, with Gilberto forcing his way into the side based on his play, rather than price tag or potential. 2) Osorio Impact – Back-to-back starts for the Canadian and back-to-back wins for Toronto FC. Not only that, but Toronto FC have held more possession in consecutive games that Jonathan Osorio has started, something they have struggled to do all season. Its no coincidence. Toronto FC was too direct and weak defensively down the wings with both Dominic Oduro and Jackson in the starting XI. TFC is a better team with Osorio in it. It may be an imperfect situation with Osorio playing wide left in the 4-4-2 with the midfielders preference to come inside and play one-two touch football in the middle of the park. When it works, it really comes off well. Osorio was a force in the second half in Columbus, creating before scoring the 2-1 goal. Osorio predictably came inside and forced the issue, showing for the ball before cutting forward to get into position to score on the rebound. Osorio, as an outside midfielder that fails to take advantage of the width, makes it all-important for Gilberto, Luke Moore or whomever is playing up front to play off Osorio and, at times, utilize the space down the flank. Its likewise essential for Justin Morrow to get forward from his left-back position to contribute in the attack, providing balance. Toronto FCs wing-backs dont get up the field nearly enough for my liking. Quite frankly, they cannot risk regularly getting forward, abandoning defensive responsibilities with the Oduro/Jackson combination on the flanks. Osorio is simply a better fit for all aspects of Toronto FCs play. 3) Nine-Point Swing – TFC swept their Trillium Cup rival this season, taking all nine points from three games against Columbus for the first time in club history. Bragging rights are one thing, but taking all the points against an Eastern Conference adversary is another. A five-point cushion between them and Columbus, the sixth-place team in the Eastern Conference is as good as it gets. In fact, Toronto FC has taken four out of six points against fourth-place New York Red Bulls. TFC begins September with a critical home-and-home against the fifth-place Philadelphia Union, which will go a long way in determining playoff positioning. All in all, a favourable schedule lies ahead, with ample time for rest and recovery with no mid-week games until the Philly back-to-back on September 3 and 6. With Caldwell due to return in September and with nothing else significant in terms of long-term absentees, things are trending in the right direction. The MLS roster freeze comes on September 15, leaving plenty of time for general manager Tim Bezbatchenko to figure out what he still needs for the duration. 4) Liking Luke – Few mid-season acquisitions in MLS have been as important as Luke Moore to Toronto FC. And to think, all Toronto gave up for the English striker was defender Gale Agbossoumonde, who has yet to play a game for the Colorado Rapids. Its absolute larceny by Bezbatchenko and the fact Moore comes on the cheap, with his salary largely paid for by his Turkish club Elazigspor, makes it all the better. Nelsen deserves credit, as he really pushed for the team to acquire the player. Bezbatchenko obliged and the team is better for it. Moore has been effective all over the field – nothing flashy, but solid, coming back to control the ball as a more natural number nine, as well as being decent in the air. His game-winner, a header off a corner Saturday was equally impressive in power as it was placement. The returns as a Red, five goals and three assists, as well as building solid partnerships with both Defoe and Gilberto, speaks to his quality. The attacking side of the equation, in depth and talent, should not be a worry for TFC down the stretch of the season. Moore is a big part of that. 5) Road Warriors – TFC wraps up their four-game road trip Saturday against Sporting Kansas City, a place they earned a hard fought 2-2 draw down to ten men earlier this season. Road success has been key to Torontos turn-around this campaign. TFC has picked up 16 points away from BMO Field, the same number of points they have earned at home. TFC only earned nine away points through the entirety of the 2013 season. Away goals havent been an issue either, having scored two more away goals than at home, looking rather comfortable playing a more patient, counter-attacking style. Saturdays upcoming match should be predictably heated, with serious tension between the two sides. Toronto FCs 2-1 loss to SKC last month was noted for its chippy, physical and emotional play. Referee Ted Unkel was forced into numerous questionable calls and non-calls, which were highly debated among onlookers. Both sets of coaching staffs, publicly and/or privately begrudged the difficult night for the referees, who did little to quell tensions or properly manage the thorny occasion. The unfortunate outcome for TFC will be fresh in the players minds heading to the midwest. TFC has something to prove after back-to-back losses against the top two teams in the Eastern Conference. Saturday at Sporting Park has the makings of something special, pitting two standout MLS sides, capable of playing at the highest level with good tempo and quality play, with no love lost between them. Not only that, but the Reds have an opportunity to deliver a three-game sweep to a team that is on its first three-game losing streak since June 8-10. The Dodgers, who have a magic number of 11 to clinch a division title, havent lost four in a row since dropping their first eight games of May. Over his last seven starts, Bailey is 5-0 with a 2.42 ERA. The five-game winning streak is a career best. Also, the right-hander hasnt been scored on in his last two starts, both against the Cardinals, covering a total of 14 1/3 innings. Bailey is 3-3 with a 4.23 ERA in seven career starts against the Dodgers. That includes a 2-1 loss at Dodger Stadium on July 26, when he faced Kershaw, who fanned eight over an eight-inning performance. Todd Frazier singled in the game-winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Reds took a 4-3 win Saturday afternoon. Billy Hamilton came in to pinch-run for Ludwick and proceeded to steal second before scoring the deciding run on Fraziers grounder that got through the infield. "Ive said it before, September is the time to step up or shut up. You forget about what has been going on in the year. You just have to keep striving to be better. Its a long season and people have to understand that. Its been a fun month for the Reds," said Frazier. Cesar Izturis finished with three hits, including a double, to go with a run scored and an RBI for the Reds. J.J. Hoover (4-5) was credited with the win after allowing only one hit in the top of the 10th. Cincinnati starter Mat Latos surrendered three runs across seven innings, while Zack Greinke allowed two runs over six frames in the start for Los Angeles. "We got plenty of big outs, we just didnt get enough hits. We didnt get enough runs," said Dodgers manager Don Mattingly. Yasiel Puig stroked a two-run homer and Adrian Gonzalez went 4-for-5 in the setback. Cincinnati shortstop Zack Cozart extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Its been quite a run of late for Canadian rugby international Hubert Buydens.Last Friday in New Zealand, the 32-year-old prop from Saskatoon helped the Manawatu Tubos earn promotion with a 32-24 win over Hawkes Bay in the NPC Championship final. On Sunday, Buydens will captain a Canada XV against an RFU Championship XV in Worcester, England. The game against an all-star squad from Englands second-tier league is the first of four for Canada on its November tour of Europe.Canadian coach Kieran Crowleys squad will be reinforced for the remaining games on the tour, which fall within the International Rugby Boards Test window unlike Sundays contest. Canada, ranked 17th in the world, will meet No. 22 Namibia in Colwyn Bay, Wales, on Nov. 7, No. 9 Samoa in Vannes, France, on Nov. 14, and No. 16 Romania in Bucharest on Nov. 22.Samoa, Namibia and Romania will join Canada at next years World Cup, with Canada and Romania both featuring in Pool D, alongside France, Ireland and Italy.Buydens has been named captain for the entire tour. Skipper Tyler Ardron, who plays for the Ospreys in Wales, is recovering from an injury and will be joining the team later in the tour.Buydens also captained Canada in a 52-8 win over Portugal last November. It was a bit of a surprise when they told me I was going to be captaining, he said of this tour. But its always a great honour. Ill try and do my best. The Canada tour has reunited Buydens, a loosehead prop, with Jason Marshall, a 29-year-old tighthead prop from North Vancouver.Amazingly the two Canucks found themselves facing off in the New Zealand final, with Marshall starting for Hawkes Bay.The two props, who both go under the nickname Moose in New Zealand, came to rugby from a football background. Buydens, a former offensive lineman with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, had a tryout with the B.C. Lions while Marshall played quarterback for Simon Fraser and tried out for the Edmonton Eskimos.Buydens had the last laugh in last weeks New Zealand final. Not only did his team win, but he and the Manawatu pack earned a memorable penalty on one scrum that saw Marshall propelled upwards like a rocket. That one definitely felt pretty good, Buydens said with a chuckle. Hes taking a bit of guff from the boys that he was on the losing end of that one.Despite a gruelling campaign in New Zealand, Buydens says his body is feeling good.My body came through A-OK, he said. Everything that should hurt or normally does hurt does hurt and everything that shouldnt doesnt, so its all good that way.Buydens says he will have to miss out on Manawatu next year given preparations for the World Cup, which runs Sept. 18 to Oct. 31 in England and Wales. It is a little disappointing that way but definitely playing for Canada is the priority, he said.Buydens expects to return to Saskatoon after the tour and spend Christmas at home. He will then look to play overseas or, barring that, settle in Victoria.Buydens enjoyed his second season in New Zealand, living in Palmerston North where rugby players do not go unnoticed. Its a beautiful place, he said. Everyone knows who you are ... people stop you in the street, talk to you about rugby , how youre doing and how the teams doing. At six foot three and 275 pounds with a healthy beard — he was one of Canadas famed beardos at the last World Cup — Buydens is hard to miss.I stick out a little bit, yeah, he said.Canada is looking to step it up on tour after going 0-3 in June against Japan, Scotland and the U.S. A domestic Canada A side also disappointed in finishing third at the Americas Rugby Championship earlier this month.Worcester Warriors lock James Percival will captain the RFU Championship side.A lot of the Canadian boys play in that league so it will be good to measure ourselves against them and hopefully get one up on them, Buydens said.———Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter. Both sides of the deal have formally announced acquisitions: TFC introduced Jozy Altidore as a designated player on Friday, while their counterparts announced a three-and-a-half-year deal with Jermain Defoe. UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Riding a long winning streak, the powerful Anaheim Ducks had no fear trailing by two goals heading into the third period against the fragile New York Islanders. Ryan Getzlaf scored three goals and the Ducks rallied for their team-record eighth straight victory, beating the Islanders 5-3 Saturday night. "We talked after the second of just continuing to play our game," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said. "We were very calm about it and knew if we got one quickly, wed have a great chance." Down 3-1, the Ducks scored four times in the third period. The Islanders played a spirited first two periods, taking their lead on two goals by Thomas Vanek and another by Frans Nielsen. But Getzlaf scored his second of the game at 1:10 of the final period and Mathieu Perreault tied it at 10:32. Kyle Palmieri, a native of Montvale, N.J., who scored the overtime winner Friday night against the New Jersey Devils, found himself in front of Evengi Nabokov with a clear shot at 13:44. The 22-year-old forward, who also scored the winning goal when the Ducks beat the Rangers 2-1 at Madison Square Garden on Nov. 4, knocked in his sixth goal of the season. "Those goals feel really, really good," Palmieri said. "We find ways to win and tonight was another example of our patience and skill." Getzlaf completed his hat trick with an empty-net goal. The Ducks won in their first visit to Long Island since a 3-2 loss on Dec. 16, 2010. "We didnt move the puck the way we should have in the third period," Islanders coach Jack Capuano said. "You cant play the way we played in the third period against a big Stanley Cup-caliber team like this..ddddddddddddIt wont work." Vanek finally had the type of game the Islanders envisioned when they acquired him from Buffalo for popular left wing Matt Moulson on Oct. 27. The Austrian right wing opened the scoring at 11:27 of the first, putting a rebound past backup goaltender Frederik Andersen, who made 18 saves to improve to 9-1. After Getzlaf tied the game at 15:10 of the second, Vanek gave the Islanders again with a perfectly placed shot as he sped down the right side, beating Andersen to his stick side at 17:55. The goal was Vaneks ninth since joining the Islanders and his third in two nights. Nielsen made it 3-1 for the Islanders 57 seconds later. "It came down to execution," Capuano said. "We were icing the puck too much and not making plays when we had to in the third period." Anaheim forward Teemu Selanne was a healthy scratch. The 43-year-old Selanne usually doesnt play the second half of back-to-back games. Selanne played Friday night as the Ducks upended the Devils 3-2 in overtime. NOTES: This was the 10th time in 36 games this season the Islanders have lost a third-period lead. ... The Ducks will complete their final Eastern trip of the season at Washington on Monday. ... Forward Dustin Penner and defenceman Hampus Lindholm were healthy scratches for the Ducks, as were Islanders forwards Colin McDonald and Peter Regin, plus defenceman Aaron Ness. ... Anaheim also continued to be without goaltender Viktor Fasth (lower body) and defencemen Luca Sbisa (hand) and Sheldon Souray (wrist). ... hreatening behaviour and carrying a knif

Each round of the playoffs, I like to forecast the round simply by using shots on goal and goaltender save percentage to come up with a baseline for the series. It offers no assurances and doesnt apply any context, like, for example, taking injuries into account. Last year, this method forecasted the first round at a 7-1 clip; this year it was 5-3, with losses on Columbus, Colorado and San Jose. In the first two cases, their strong goaltending led to a calculated advantage, but it can be difficult for goaltending superiority to take effect over much larger samples, let alone seven games. As for the Sharks, they were in a virtual toss-up situation with the Kings, favoured by the smallest of margins. The expected goals for each team in the series are determined by taking each teams shots for and against over the course of the season, as well as through the first round of the playoffs, and splitting the difference. So, for example, Boston had 32.1 shots on goal per game and Montreal has allowed 28.6 shots on goal per game; the average of those two numbers, 30.35 shots, is the number that is then multiplied by (1 - the opposing goaltenders save percentage) to determine an expected goals per game for the Bruins. Finally, the number is multiplied by seven to indicate an expected goal total for a seven-game series. Theres no guarantee that scoring more goals in a series will result in winning four games first, but the odds certainly favour the team that scores more. So, lets see how the numbers shake out for Round Two: Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Boston 32.1 29.3 Tuukka Rask 0.933 15.93 Montreal 30.9 28.6 Carey Price 0.925 14.12 Verdict: The Bruins are favoured, with a slightly better shot differential and slightly better goaltending, and its simple enough that way. But when the Habs and Bruins meet in the playoffs, strange things can happen. Higher-seeded Canadiens teams have been bounced by lower-seeded Bruins teams and vice versa. Between these two incarnations of the Canadiens and Bruins is a wonderful contrast in styles as the Bruins are more physically-imposing while the Canadiens are a smaller, skilled group. While some teams (including the Red Wings in Round One) avoid getting into confrontations with the Bruins, the Canadiens havent always taken that approach, and it not only makes for entertaining hockey, it adds some variability to the process. Furthermore, if the Canadiens can keep Tuukka Rask off his game (his .908 save percentage vs. Montreal is his lowest vs. teams that hes faced at least 10 times in his career), then that could help close the calculated gap between the teams. Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Pittsburgh 30.4 29.1 Marc-Andre Fleury 0.915 16.66 N.Y. Rangers 33.1 29.1 Henrik Lundqvist 0.920 18.50 Verdict: The Penguins were forecasted to lose -- or, more accurately, score fewer goals -- against Columbus, but here they are in the second round, looking at a similar forecast, against a team with a better shot differential and better goaltending. The Penguins are healthier than theyve been for most of the season, which helps, and they have elite forwards that can shake results. The Rangers could control play and it wouldnt take a Henrik Lundqvist collapse to see the Penguins get through. All it might take is Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin going off for a few games. Heck, they managed to get past Columbus with contributions from a lot more than Crosby and Malkin. Defencemen Paul Martin and Matt Niskanen led the Penguins with eight points, Brandon Sutter added five and Beau Bennett chipped in four. In my playoff picks, I had the Penguins going past the Rangers and its on the expectation that, at some point, the Penguins elite players will bury more of their chances, though that also requires some faith in Marc-Andre Fleury and that hasnt been a safe feeling for the Penguins in the playoffs for quite some time. Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Anaheim 31.0 28.8 Frederik Andersen 0.918 17.26 Los Angeles 31.6 27.0 Jonathan Quick 0.915 17.33 Anaheim 31.0 28.8 Jonas Hiller 0.912 17.26 Los Angeles 31.6 27.0 Jonathan Quick 0.915 18.60 Verdict: I presume that the Ducks are going back to rookie Frederik Andersen, even after he was pulled twice against Dallas in the first round (but I included calculations for Hiller anyway). This is another really close series in which the Kings get slightly favoured because they have superior shot differential. The Ducks have exceeded more advanced possession metrics all year, in part because they have been insanely fortunate when it comes to shooting in close games. Oh, and here too. That isnt the kind of thing that seems possible to repeat over time but, it worked enough to take down Dallas in the first round, so it wouldnt come as a shock if they can do it against Los Angeles. Team SF SA Goaltender SV% Expected GF/Series Chicago 32.9 27.8 Corey Crawford 0.919 18.15 Minnesota 27.2 27.4 Darcy Kuemper 0.914 15.59 Chicago 32.9 27.8 Corey Crawford 0.919 20.05 Minnesota 27.2 27.4 Ilya Bryzgalov 0.905 15.59 Verdict: Again, a presumption that the Wild will have Darcy Kuemper to start the series, despite leaving Game Seven against Colorado with an injury. If the Wild are really rolling with Ilya Bryzgalov, then the forecast will be unfavourable, just as it was in the first round, but if Kuemper is in, he offers a slightly better chance. No matter who is in net for the Wild, though, they will have their hands full, because they are facing a team that generates a whole lot more shots than their opponents. So long as Corey Crawford is decent, and there arent any major injuries, then the Blackhawks will warrant their status as prohibitive favourites. GENEVA -- World Cup-bound Algeria beat Romania 2-1 in a warm-up match on Wednesday marred by widespread fan disorder. The teams were taken off the field after 43 minutes with the score 1-1, and Algeria coach Vahid Halilhodzic went to the centre circle to broadcast an appeal for fans to stop throwing lit flares and bottles. Referee Nikolaj Haeni of Switzerland brought players back after a 15-minute break to play the final two minutes of the first half, then immediately changed ends to start the second period. When El Arabi Soudani scored the decisive goal in the 66th minute, around 15 fans ran on the pitch from three sides of the Stade de Geneve. Nabil Bentaleb had put Algeria ahead in the 21st minute after a handling error by Romania goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, and Alexandru Chipciu levelled in the 28th. "The result is very satisfying. The team is progressing on all levels," said Halilhodzic, adding he was "a bit disappointed with the behaviour of our supporters." The final whistle brought around 1,000 of the 15,600 spectators on to the field. Many dispersed when water sprinklers were turned on, though some continued to clash with stewards in one corner of the pitch. Algeria opens against Group H favourite Belgium on June 17 in Belo Horizonte. It then plays South Korea in Porto Alegre and Russia in Curitiba. Despite events in the stands, Algeria made a good impression on the field. Abdelmoumene Djabou and Bentaleb gave Romania right-back Vlad Chiriches, Bentalebs Tottenham teammate, a tough time and Algerias best moves flowed there. Sofiane Feghouli twice wasted clear shooting chances in the 17th minute, before Algeria led when Manchester City keeper Pantilimon spilled Djabous cross. Bentaleb and Feghouli converged on the loose ball which looped into the empty goal. The goal sparked a firework display around the stadium with at least 15 flares burning in the stands. Romania levelled seven minutes later when Alexandru Chipciu beat the offside line, rounded goalkeeper Rais MBolhi who had charged out of his penalty area, and rolled the ball into an unguarded goal. Fan trouble resumed in the second period when an Algerian supporter encroached on the pitch in the 57th as his team prepared to take a corner. A mini-pitch invasion followed Algeria retaking the lead in the 66th when El Arabi Soudani connected with Saphir Taiders pass from the right side of the penalty area. According to TSN Hockey Insiders Bob McKenzie and Darren Dreger, the cap is expected to rise to $71.1 million for the 2014-15 season according to a projection that was presented at the NHLs Board of Governors meeting in Pebble Beach, California. The cap is currently set at $64.3 million in this, the second season under the NHLs latest collective bargaining agreement. Teams must currently hit a minimum salary cap obligation of $44 million, based on average annual salary over the length of a players contract. The cap floor is expected to rise to roughly $52 million. "These are preliminary estimates, its in that range," NHL commissioner Gary Bettman told TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN.com. "And I said to the board there shouldnt be any issue or consternation, if thats the cap level, its because the revenues have gone up. And thats a good thing." During the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season, the NHL salary cap was $70.2 million. "I think $71 million is an indication that the NHL is healthy and thats good for everybody," St. Louis Blues general manager Doug Armstrong told LeBrun. "The business is certainly healthy and its recovered quite well, and that gets reflected in an equal partnership with us and that was nice to see," said Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli. The additional cap space will present an opportunity to all clubs to raise their spending. Bigg market teams will be looking to take advantage of the extra flexibility.dddddddddddd "None of us know what the actual number will be at the end of the day, but a projected number in that range just adds flexibility for us and adds the opportunity for us to spend that money wisely," said Vancouver Canucks GM Mike Gillis. "And if we can do it wisely, then we look at it as opportunity." For smaller market teams like the Florida Panthers and Winnipeg Jets, a higher floor number to spend to could create issues. But the Jets told the Canadian Press that they were not concerned. "It doesnt affect us," said Jets chairman Mark Chipman. "Theres a rising tide for sure and were quite comfortable with where we rank in terms of revenue production." Nashville Predators general manager David Poile suggested that the new cap and floor numbers are a sign of the times. "I think thats all good news. Weve got to move with everybody else. Theres a lot of components in the way this whole things been put together. Theres revenue sharing for teams like ourselves that it always works out. "I think the main thing youve got to focus on is how good the business is doing. This is fabulous just the way the game has been growing. The fact that were playing these outdoor games is going to create a lot more interest than weve ever had before. As far as I can see it, theres just a lot of good things happening." Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Giancarlo Stanton and Marcell Ozuna homered for Miami. The Marlins managed just two hits from the ninth inning on, however. After the Phillies squandered chances to score in the 10th, 11th and 12th innings, Jimmy Rollins led off the 14th with an infield single. Utley followed by driving an 0-2 pitch from Chris Hatcher (0-1) deep into the seats in right field. Utley was mobbed at home plate by his smiling teammates and met with a pie in the face while giving a TV interview afterward. The game lasted 4 hours, 41 minutes and the teams combined to use 13 pitchers. Justin De Fratus (2-0) pitched two scoreless innings as part of an impressive display by the Philadelphia bullpen. De Fratus, Mario Hollands, Ken Giles, Antonio Bastardo, Jonathan Papelbon and Jake Diekman combined to pitch seven scoreless innings of three-hit relief after Phillies starter Cole Hamels left. Hamels gave up three runs on the solo homers and left after allowing seven hits, striking out seven and walking none in seven innings. It was the 10th straight start Hamels pitched seven innings or more; he is 2-2 in those outings due to a lack of run support. The left-hander entered with an MLB-best 1.66 ERA over his last nine outings, but the Phillies have scored three runs or less in 10 of his 13 starts this season. Overall, Hamels is 2-4. Saltalamacchias homer to left field leading off the tthird staked Miami to a 1-0 lead.ddddddddddddStanton went deep to start the fourth before Philadelphia got a run back in the bottom of the inning on Carlos Ruizs sacrifice fly. The Phillies tied it in the fifth on Utleys RBI single. But the leadoff homer hurt Hamels again in the seventh when Ozuna started the inning by clearing the fence in left to make it 3-2. The Phillies got a gift run in the seventh off reliever Bryan Morris when first baseman Jeff Baker booted Rollins grounder that should have ended the inning. Bakers error allowed Domonic Brown to score from third. Brown singled pinch-hitting for Hamels to start the inning. He wasnt in the starting lineup for a defensive gaffe, his second in three nights, in Wednesdays 3-2 Marlins win when he misplayed Ozunas fly ball in left field. Marlins right-hander Tom Koehler was in line for the victory before Bakers miscue after giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings with six strikeouts and no walks. CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Alabama star quarterback A.J. McCarron signed Thursday with the Cincinnati Bengals. A fifth-round selection, McCarron led the Crimson Tide to two national championships, setting several school passing records. But his arm strength was questioned by many pro teams, and he slid to 164th overall in the draft. McCarron will be a backup to four-year veteran Andy Dalton, who has gotten Cincinnati to the playoffs in each of his three pro seasons. But the Bengals are 0-3 in post-season games with Dalton. After being drafted, McCarron said: "Im confident in myself but at the same time, I know Andys the QB out there and I respect that." Cincinnati also signed cornerback Lavelle Westbrooks, a seventh-round pick out of Georgia Southern. The Bengals have signed four of their eight draft selections. Bennie Logan Titans Jersey . NIZHNY TAGIL, Russia - Anders Fannemel of Norway earned his first career ski jump World Cup victory on Saturday by finishing first in a large hill night event.Fannemel jumped 132 and 133 metres for a total score of 263.1 points, 5.8 points ahead of Austrias Gregor Schlierenzauer, who had been seeking to extend his record haul of World Cup wins to 54.Its an amazing feeling, Fannemel said after securing the win on the HS134 hill in Russias Ural mountain city of Nizhny Tagil. I feel Ive been close the whole winter and today I managed two good jumps in the competition.Schlierenzauer, who had forced Fannemel into second place in Lillehammer last week, also jumped 133 metres in his second attempt, one meter short of the hill record set by Fannemel in Fridays qualifying.Severin Freund of Germany was third with 254.9 points.Fannemel took the overall World Cup lead from Czech jumper Roman Koudelka, who skipped the event. He beat Jay Don Blake by two shots.RENTON, Wash. -- Wide receiver Sidney Rice should be fully recovered from a torn knee ligament by the time the Seattle Seahawks start defence of their Super Bowl title, general manager John Schneider said Wednesday. After spending the past three seasons with the Seahawks, Rice was released by Seattle following the Super Bowl in a salary-related move. He was scheduled to make $8.5 million in base salary for 2014 before being released in late February. But Rice and the Seahawks remained in contact and he was brought back on a $1 million, one-year deal earlier this month. He received medical clearance to participate in football-related activities in the middle of April. Rice appeared in eight games for Seattle last season with 15 catches for 231 yards and three touchdowns before being placed on injured reserve after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in October against St. Louis. If he can return to health and productivity, Rice could quell one of Seattles questions about depth at wide receiver heading into next season. "When we released him it was hard but we explained the landscape to Sidney and his representative and we stayed in contact with him all the way through it," Schneider said. Schneider touched on a number of topics during his pre-draft availability. Schneider said that Terrelle Pryor was acquired from Oakland with the idea that hed compete as a quartterback.dddddddddddd Seattle sent a seventh-round pick to the Raiders in exchange for Pryor. There was a thought he could be a dual-threat player for Seattle, but Schneider said Pryor is learning the quarterback position. Schneider said Seattle knew it wouldnt be able to get Pryor off waivers, leading to the discussions of the trade. The value of what Pryor could bring was likely higher than what they could get from the seventh-round pick. "Right now hes learning the quarterback position and (another position) isnt even an option," Schneider said. Schneider did not know if wide receiver Doug Baldwin would sign his second-round tender as a restricted free agent. Friday is the deadline for restricted free agents to field offers from other teams. He added the team has not made a decision on whether to pick up the fifth-year option on former first-round pick James Carpenter. Schneider also declined to comment on whether strong safety Kam Chancellor or left tackle Russell Okung had surgery in the off-season. Left to be determined is if recently hired consultant Jeff Ireland will have a role with the club following the draft. The former Miami general manager was hired by Seattle earlier this week to be another voice in the draft room. But Schneider said it was too early to know if there would be a spot for Ireland with the team beyond the draft. We take pride in that we know were going to come into the game, we know were going to change the pace of the game.Williams, who shot 5-for-7 from three-point range, led a Raptors bench that outscored its visitors 64-45, with James Johnson scoring 13, Patrick Patterson chipping in with 11, and Greivis Vasquez adding 10.We feel like we have one of the best benches in the league. We have the sixth man of the year, in my opinion, in Lou Williams, Patterson said. Tonight was probably one of the best games Ive seen from Lou. He was all over the court tonight on offence and defence, taking charges, running people off the line, challenging shots.Jonas Valanciunas finished with 10 points to go with a game-high 14 rebounds for Toronto (17-6), which was playing its seventh game without DeRozan (torn groin tendon). The Raptors are 4-3 without him.The game marked the Raptors first of six in a row against teams with losing records, a welcome relief after Tuesdays 105-101 loss at Cleveland — their second defeat in five days to the Cavs. The Raptors led virtually from the opening whistle, and were up by as many as 13 points before taking an 80-72 lead into the fourth in front of another capacity crowd of 19,800 — the Raptors 10th consecutive sellout — at the Air Canada Centre. The bench trio of Williams, Vasquez and Johnson lit it up early in the fourth, and a driving slam dunk from Johnson had the Raptors up by 19 points. The Pacers pulled to within 14 with 2:39 to play, but Williams calmly drilled another three coming out of a timeout, putting the Raptors up by 17 and the game, out of reach. In what has turned into one of most profitable acquisitions of the off-season, the Raptors acquired the veteran guard and Lucas Noggueira from Atlanta in exchange for John Salmons.dddddddddddd Williams was coming off one of the worst seasons of his career, slowed by ACL recovery.Hes scored 20-plus points in five games — all wins — this season. When Lou is out there and hes playing like that, its a heck of a show to watch, said point guard Kyle Lowry. We (starters) got a chance to rest tonight and it was very good. Lou played well, G. (Vasquez) played well, J.J. (Johnson) played well. When those guys come in and give us that type of lift, its always fortunate for us to be able to kind of relax when those guys take over. The Pacers were No. 2 in the league in rebounding coming into the game, providing Toronto with what coach Dwane Casey had said would be a huge test. Rebounding has been the Raptors one big inconsistency this season.Mission accomplished: the Raptors outrebounded their visitors 52-39. That was one of our main points of emphasis going into the game, Casey said. To outrebound a team like Indiana. . . who are a very physical and paint-oriented team, my hat is off to our guys because thats what weve been preaching.Solomon Hill scored 16 points to top the Pacers (7-16) in their seventh straight loss — Indianas longest losing skid in five seasons.Their bench outplayed our bench, said Pacers coach Frank Vogel. We didnt account for Lou Williams. Lou Williams I thought was a big difference.Landry Fields started in place of DeRozan, and led the way in a first quarter that saw the Raptors lead by nine. They took a 28-20 advantage into the second.Williams drained three of four three-point attempts for 12 points in the second quarter, and the Raptors went ahead by 13 points on an alley-oop layup from Amir Johnson with 4:28 left in the half. They took a 53-42 advantage into the break. The Pacers shot 54 per cent in the third, outscoring Toronto 30-27 in the frame to pull to within four points. But Toronto was up by eight heading into the final 12 minutes.NOTES: The Raptors are in New York to face the Knicks on Sunday, then return home to host the Orlando Magic on Monday, and the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. . . With no idea where he will be playing in the NBA next season, Kevin Love has withdrawn from this summers Team USA basketball roster. Love is in limbo while the Minnesota Timberwolves field offers for their three-time All-Star, a process that was complicated and likely lengthened when Cleveland Cavaliers rookie Andrew Wiggins signed his contract this week. Love is the latest All-Star to pull out of Team USA, which begins its training camp in Las Vegas next week to prepare for the FIBA World Cup in Spain. In recent weeks the Americans have lost Blake Griffin, LaMarcus Aldridge and NBA Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard. They have 18 players remaining and will choose 12 for the World Cup of Basketball roster. Love, who won gold medals at the 2012 Olympics and 2010 world championship and was one of the first players to commit to play this summer, told USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo that he would be unavailable for training camp that starts Monday. "He wants to play but its a little bit of a sign of the times when you look at the league in terms of contracts, rumoured trades," Colangelo told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. "All of those circumstances puts players Im a funny position." The Cavaliers have been in pursuit of Love since before the draft. Their chances of landing Love, who can opt out of his contract next summer and has told the Timberwolves he wants to play for a contender, increased exponentially when LeBron James chose to return to play in Cleveland. The Timberwolves have demanded Wiggins, the No. 1 overall draft pick, in a package in return for Love and the Cavaliers have gradually softened on their position to include the dynamic 19-year-old wing player in trade talks. Under NBA rules, Wiggins cannot be traded until 30 days after he signed his contract with the Cavaliers. That length of time allows other teams to make offers for Love as well, but also makes it too risky for Love to participate with Team USA. An injury could derail any trade possibilities, so Love had to take the difficult step of informing Colangelo on Friday night that he would not be able to participate. It had to be a tough call for Love to make. He has long held playing for Team USA as one of the highest honours possible and has referred to his experience of winning gold in London as the pinnacle of his young career. While other big stars like James were stepping away from the team to get some rest this summer, Love took pride last year in joining with Kevin Durant to be among the first elite players to recommit to the World Cup team. "I think he truly is remorseful," Colangelo said. Love was a vital piece to the London team, giving the Americans a rebounding presence and a much-needed big man to stretch the floor. But Colangelo said the team would be able to get by without him, pointing to an experienced roster and rising star Anthony Davis, who was on the Olympic team but played only sparingly. "Its not like theres a barrel full of power forwards that can rebound and shoot the ball like Kevin Love," Colangelo said. But in international competition, where teams generally play smaller than they do in the NBA, players such as Indianas Paul George and Dallas Mavericks forward Chandler Parsons could help fill the void. DeMarcus Cousins and Andre Drummond are other big men that should give the Americans a presence in the paint. "Someone is going to have an opportunity to step up," Colangelo said. "Were kind of anxious to get started to look at this." ___ AP Basketball Writer Brian Mahoney contributed to this report. Oregon (3-0) erased a 7-0 deficit with four second-quarter touchdowns to take command. Mariota became the fourth Oregon quarterback to pass for more than 7,000 yards. The Ducks junior completed 19 of 23 passes, two for touchdowns. Mariota also rushed five times for 71 yards, including touchdown runs of 15 and 19 yards. Mariota has thrown a school-record 71 touchdowns, with at least one TD thrown in all 29 games hes appeared in. Mariota has yet to throw an interception through three games this season. Byron Marshall ran six times for 80 yards and a touchdown to lead Oregons running game. Freshman Royce Freeman had a 12-yard touchdown run. The Ducks had 556 yards, including 263 on the ground. Oregon safety Erick Dargan had two interceptions, both in the first half. Wyoming quarterback Colby Kirkegaard completed 19 of 33 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Cowboys running back Shaun Wick ran 16 times for 122 yards. Wyoming, a 43-point underdog to Oregon, had some moments, but couldnt stop the Ducks offence after the first quarter. The Cowboys (2-1) had 439 yards, including 282 during the first half. But Wyoming allowed Oregon to score on six consecutive possessions, three set up by Cowboy turnovers. The loss ended a personal 26-game winning streak for first-year Wyoming coach Craig Bohl, who won three consecutive FCS national titles at North Dakota State (2011-13). Wyoming stunned Oregon early, stopping the Duccks first drive on fourth down at the Cowboys 2.dddddddddddd Wyoming rewarded its defence by driving 98 yards for the games first score, an 18-yard touchdown pass from Kirkegaard to Tanner Gentry. Oregon right tackle Jake Fisher, a three-year starter, left the game during the Ducks opening drive with a leg injury. The Ducks, who last failed to score during the first quarter at home in 2012 against Stanford, ended Wyomings upset hopes with a 27-point second quarter. Oregon tied the game at 7-7 just five seconds into the second quarter on a 15-yard touchdown scramble by Mariota. The Ducks took a 13-7 lead four minutes later when Marshall romped 30 yards for a score. Two interceptions by Dargan set up Oregons final two scores of the second quarter. Mariota gave Ducks fans a thrill and a scare at the same time on Oregons next drive. Scrambling to avoid a pass rush, Mariota ran 19 yards for a touchdown, finishing the play by diving head first over Wyoming tacklers to reach the pylon. Devon Allen caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Mariota with 1:34 remaining in the second quarter, giving Oregon a 27-7 lead that it took into halftime. The Ducks continued their offensive roll into the third quarter, when Oregon scored on its first two possessions to take a 41-7 lead. Mariota left the game after throwing a 5-yard touchdown pass to Johnathan Loyd with 9:59 remaining in the third. The win gives Oregon 50 for this decade, the first FBS team to reach that plateau. With the Blue Jays season teetering on the brink, Alex Anthopoulos tenure as Blue Jays GM could be entering a crucial period. According to Richard Griffin of the Toronto Star, should Toronto continue to slide in the standings, the fifth-year GM could find himself out of work along with his hand-picked manager John Gibbons. “If they win 81 games or less the answer is no and that would include the manager too,” Griffin said on TSN 1050 when asked what it would take for the Jays to jettison their 37-year-old general manager. Entering the second year of a five year window in which president Paul Beeston promised three playoff berths, Griffin said the pressure is on Anthopoulos, with Jose Bautista suggesting at the All-Star Game the team could benefit from a move to help a team that has dropped eight of their last 10 games to fall out of a playoff spot. “For Anthopoulos to make one of two or three moves that are possible -- that are needed -- I think would send a good message in the clubhouse, and if he makes no move, this thing could fall apart,” Griffin said, referencing the need for a right-handed hitting infielder along with a starter to bolster a rotation that, according to Griffin has only two proven starters in R.A. INDIANAPOLIS -- This time, Jordan Morgan got the ball to bounce the right way -- and Michigan celebrated. A little more than one year after missing a last-second tip-in that would have given the Wolverines a share of the Big Ten regular-season title, the 6-foot-8 forward scored on a layup with 7.9 seconds left to give No. 8 Michigan a 64-63 victory over Illinois in Fridays Big Ten tournament quarterfinals and a shot at another league championship. "Im telling you -- I probably exaggerate -- 10,000 times, at least 2,000 times in five years Jordan Morgan has run that same drill," coach John Beilein said. "Theres a bag to hit him, you still got to catch it in a crowd and keep it up and dunk it if he can. He said he wanted to add a little drama to the game, so he decided to put it up on the rim. Illinois had a chance to win it when Tracy Abrams drove in for a layup, expecting contact, but the ball hit the front of the rim and bounced off. No foul was called. Its about time something went right for the Wolverines (24-7) in this tournament. Since going 3-0 to win the first title in 1998, Michigan has not won more than one game in the annual tourney. The Wolverines later vacated that tourney title because of NCAA infractions, and Michigan has endured everything from an embarrassing 21-turnover game in a 2006 first-round loss to Evan Turners buzzer-beating 40-foot heave, which gave rival Ohio State a 69-68 quarterfinal win in 2010. Things are supposed to be different this year. After ending a 28-year drought between outright regular-season titles with a win at Illinois last week, Michigan came into this weekend with the No. 1 tourney seed for the first time in school history and with a full head of steam -- six straight wins. But it almost happened again. Michigan blew a 13-point second-half lead, scored just six points in the final 7 1/2 minutes and then wound up getting bailed out by Morgan when Big Ten player of the year changed the play coach John Beilein called in the huddle. "I was looking to be aggressive and raised up to shoot and man, the guy guarding me was still chasing me and the big was chasing me too and J-Mo rolled down the lane and he was wide open," Stauskas said. "I hit him with the ball and he laid it in." The Wolverines usual trio led the way. Stauskas had 19 points despite going 4 of 12 from the field and 2 of 10 on 3-pointers against Illinois zone defence, Glenn Robinson III had 15 points and seven rebounds and Caris LeVert finished with 13 points, five rebounds and four assists. Yet it was Morgan, who wound up the star. He made the only two shots he took -- none bigger than the layup he never expected that sent Michigan into Saturdays semifinals against either fourth-seeded Nebraska or fifth-seeded Ohio State, who played in the second quarterfinal of the day. Michigan swept Nebraska this season and won at Ohio State in this seasons only meeting with the Buckeyes. Morgan, who missed the shot that gave Indiana last years outright regular season title, made this one. "As far as catching it, I just put it on the rim and got a nice roll," he said matter-of-factly. Ninth-seeded Illinois (19-14) was on the cusp of pulling off a major upset after finally retaking a 59-58 lead on Rices driving layup with 4:53 left. The Illini allowed just one 3-pointer, one free throw but couldnt stop Morgans layup the rest of the way. Abrams and Rayvonte Rice each finished with 11 points. Kendrick Nunn had 10 points as the Illini lost for only the second time in seven games. "Its obviously an uncontested shot that I probably could make," Abrams said. "We obviously wanted to get that one in and we wanted to win, but there was a lot of other plays that we can account back to that we could have did different or could have got an extra rebound." Illinois zone defence changed game. Following a media timeout with 11:26 left, Stauskas made two free throws to give the Wolverines a 55-44 lead. The Illini answered with 10 straight points and finally took the lead on Rices driving layup with 4:53 left. Michigan tied the score at 61 with 3:10 to go, but all the Wolverines could muster the rest of the way was one free throw from Stauskas until the surprised Morgan got the right roll. "Well, were thrilled to get that win because as you can see, as Illinois has shown in their last six games, how well the program has played after a tough January," Beilein said. "They proved how good they were, and, fortunately, we got some good bounces around the basket to finish the game." Dallas Goedert Jersey . "Today was a very great day for me. It was always my dream to be good in GS," Wierather said. "I took quite a long time to get there. It feels awesome to have my first win (in GS)." OAKLAND, Calif. -- Yoenis Cespedes homered twice and tied a career high with five RBIs before leaving with an apparent right thumb injury, and the Oakland Athletics held off the Houston Astros 9-7 on Wednesday night. The two-time reigning Home Run Derby champion hit a three-run drive in the second inning and a two-run shot in the fourth off Brad Peacock (3-7) for his 15th and 16th homers this season. Cespedes snapped a 25-game skid -- matching his career high -- since his last long ball June 19 against Boston. Cespedes was replaced in left field with the As leading 8-1 in the seventh. But the Astros almost pulled off an improbable comeback, scoring five runs in the eighth before the back of Oaklands bullpen shut them down. Jesse Chavez (8-6) allowed two runs and four hits in 5 2-3 innings to help the As (62-38) extend the best record in baseball. He struck out seven and walked two. Struggling reliever Jim Johnson gave up four runs -- three earned -- without recording an out to spark Houstons five-run eighth. He left to a smattering of boos again. Luke Gregerson stranded two runners on base in the eighth, and Sean Doolittle recorded his 15th save in 18 tries with a perfect ninth. Chavez, who had not started since July 12 at Seattle before the All-Star break, looked sharp at the outset. He did not allow a hit until Matt Dominguez lined a single to left with one out in the fifth. The As got all the support they needed in just three swings. Jed Lowrie led off Oaklands second with his fifth homer, and Cespedes busted the game open by sending a slider from Peacock over the wall in centre. In the fourth, Cespedes pulled a curveball into the stands in left to put the As up 7-0. It was Cespedes fifth career two-homer game and first since June 4 at the New York Yankees. It also was the third time hes had five RBIs in a game -- all this year. Peacock, who was traded to Houston in February 2013 as part of the deal that landed Lowrie in Oakland, was charged with seven runs and seven hits in 3 2-3 innings. The As built leads of 8-1 and 9-2 but still had a few scares late. Cespedes had his right thumb examined by a team trainer after grounding out on an awkward swing in the fifth. He stayed in the game before Craig Gentry replaced him in left field to start the seventh. First baseman Brandon Moss had his left hand looked at by a trainer after Jose Altuve ran through his tag on a misfired throw, jarring the ball loose, and Johnson -- who signed a $10 million, one-year deal with Oakland after leading the AL with 50 saves for Baltimore last season -- helped turn a runaway game into a tight one. The Astros placed rookie OF George Springer on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left quadriceps and recalled outfielder Marc Krauss from Triple-A Oklahoma City. ... Zimmermann became the National Leagues first 16-game winner, pitching seven solid innings to lead the Washington Nationals past the Philadelphia Phillies 3-2 Wednesday night. At a press scrum last Thursday, the day before the Redblacks were to play their season home opener and officially open the new TD Place Stadium, one of the owners, Roger Greenburg, was asked why he decided to become the co-owner of a football team. His answer just may be the best example of why football will work this time, when it didnt on two previous occasions in Ottawa. Im paraphrasing, but the chairman/CEO of Minto Developments said that he believes there are four pillars that make up a strong community. The first is the medical system. Second, is the education system. The third is the arts and the final one is the sports culture. He went on to say that the Senators have contributed to the sports culture, but it was time to add to that with the return of professional football to the city and the addition of professional soccer. Greenburg and his partners John Ruddy, William Shenkman and Jeff Hunt wanted to be part of building and strengthening one of the pillars of a strong community. In other words, this ownership group has done all of this for the right reason - to strengthen the community that they live in and they were rewarded on Friday night for all their hard work and perseverance. Fridays home opener was an unforgettable experience and, hopefully, showed one of our other major cities in the country, that happens to be only about four hours away, just what is possible. The Redblacks didnt score a touchdown on the field, but they did in the stands and that is what mattered most. Jeff Hunt said the team could have sold another 15,000 tickets to the game and that will translate into demand. Based on the in-game experience on Friday night, nobody should be surprised to hear that the next home game will be sold out soon. The atmosphere was electric. It was a young energetic crowd, who partied like they were attending a rock concert. In fact, in what was an ingenious move, there was also a rock concert going on before the game to get people pumped up for kick-off at what was a Canadian-style tailgate party. TD Place Stadium is fantastic with great sightlines and a design that not only looks outstanding, but is designed to enhance the fan experience for soccer and football, specifically. It doesnt feel like an all-purpose facility that accommodates many, but pleases none. The game itself was not a masterpiece, but it had an exciting finish when, down by two, Redblacks QB Henry Burris hit Kerrie Johnson on a deep ball to set up the game winning field goal. It wasnt a walk-off winner by Brett Maher, but when Ricky Ray was intercepted in the dying seconds, it was game over and the crowd erupted. The games MVP was the crowd, that included Prime Minister Steven Harper, who sat beside CFL Commissioner Mark Cohon and Rough Rider great, Russ Jackson. In fact, one of the highlights of the night was when our TSN cameraa caught a fan walking by the PM and the commish to shake hands with Jackson. It was not a slight to our country leader or the leagues top man, but a show of respect for history of football in Ottawa. And speaking of the telecast, I owe the football fans in Ottawa an apology for mistakenly saying that the five Grey Cup teams in the 60s and 70s were alll coached by Frank Clair.ddddddddddddMy intention was to say that all the Cup teams in the 60s were coached by Clair. Jack Gotta was the coach from 1970-1973 and George Brancato was the coach when the Rough Riders beat Saskatchewan to win in 1976. The telecast wasnt perfect and neither was the night - apparently, some of the concessions ran out of beer and the traffic was a bit tricky, which, of course, was pointed out by some sportswriters...I swear some people would complain that their ice cream is too cold. I recently went to a George Strait concert in Dallas at AT&T Field, one of the most elaborate and state-of-the-art stadiums in the world and it had traffic issues, as well. In fact, it was so jammed up, I ended up tailgating in the parking lot for almost two hours after the event waiting for it to clear. On Friday night, the small issue were just that - small - and didnt, in any way, take away from the success of the event. It was a look at what is possible, even in Ontario ,when it comes to CFL football. The capacity of TD Place Stadium is 24,000, which just may be the perfect number and a blueprint for a possible stadium in Toronto. Our country has great football fans, but just not the volume to consistently fill a 40-to-50,000-seat stadium and at 24,000 in the stands, owners are making money. For those who would say that, if the NFL were in Toronto, they would sell out the old SkyDome, I would remind those people that the NFL regular season games played in Toronto were not sell-outs and not even close. In fact, sources have said that upwards of 20,000 tickets to the games in the Buffalo Bills series were freebies, handed to people on the street. No, 25-30,000-seat stadiums are the perfect size for CFL football, professional soccer and summer concerts and, for proof of that, look no further than Friday night in Ottawa. It can work in Toronto, as well, with a stadium at a realistic capacity and one built for football and soccer, specifically. It worked in Montreal, it is working in a big way in Winnipeg and, after Game One in Ottawa, it looks like it will be a huge hit there, as well. The answer may be BMO Field, which seems to still be part of the plan for the Argos. On our TSN set in Ottawa, Commissioner Mark Cohon had this to say when asked what it would take to replicate the Ottawa plan in Toronto: "The answer is a smaller stadium like BMO," said Cohon. "We know that they have a four-year deal left with Rogers Centre. Were talking to Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment, were talking to the city of Toronto and were working to see if we can move [the Argos] into BMO Field and replicate what we have [in Ottawa.]" The blueprint for the correct business model has now been created and now all that is needed in Toronto is for David Braley, or whomever buys the Argos, to start building the fourth pillar in that community. Congratulations again to the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group and, on behalf of the football fans in our country, thank you. At the end of the night in Ottawa, the scoreboard read Redblacks 18 - Argonauts 17, but the true winners were the fans and the community in our nations capital.
