COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The Columbus Blue Jackets took advantage of the Minnesota Wild, who were coming off an emotional game a day earlier. The Blue Jackets got goals from Cam Atkinson, Nick Foligno, Boone Jenner and R.J. Umberger and Curtis McElhinney posted his first shutout since 2011 in a 4-0 victory on Friday night. "We talked about them playing last night and there was definitely an emphasis to jump all over them," Umberger said, referring to the Wilds 4-3 home win over Chicago. "We were moving pretty good." The Blue Jackets had not played since Tuesday, filling the time with two hard, full practices in which they were able to work on several problem areas. Minnesotas Zach Parise knew his team didnt have its heart in the game. "We were just flat and not crisp," he said. "We were pretty brutal through the neutral zone and couldnt get anything generated." Wild coach Mike Yeo didnt want to use his clubs first home win over the Blackhawks since 2008 as an excuse, but still thought that was the root of his clubs problems. "We played right into that (being tired), too, turning pucks over," he said. "We were on our heels, slow reacting, slow getting to places. We were not pressing the way we needed to be." It was the Blue Jackets second win in a row, the first time theyve won back-to-back games since Oct. 25. They did it in their first game without last years Vezina Trophy winner as the NHLs top goalie, Sergei Bobrovsky, who will miss the next month or so with a strained groin. McElhinney made 20 saves in his first shutout since Feb. 5, 2011, while with the Anaheim Ducks. "Its a good feeling for me to step in here again and have another shutout game, another win," he said, referring to the Blue Jackets consecutive shutouts. "Hopefully, its the start of something good and we can keep it going." Foligno and Umberger each also had assists and Ryan Johansen added two assists to stretch his points streak to four games. The Blue Jackets have been struggling with injuries. In addition to Bobrovsky, top offensive threat Marian Gaborik (sprained knee) is out for another two weeks and top off-season free-agent signing Nathan Horton (shoulder surgery) has yet to play in a Columbus sweater and likely wont be ready for at least another month. McElhinneys third NHL shutout came in his 78th game. After a scoreless first period, the Blue Jackets took over. At the 1:17 mark of the second, Atkinson took a pass from Dubinsky and wristed a shot from the top of the right circle that Minnesota goalie Niklas Backstrom didnt appear to see. He barely moved as the puck beat him high and near his right shoulder. "Some games its tougher to swallow the puck when you dont see it," he said. The Blue Jackets went on their first power play when Matt Cooke went off for hooking. Columbus soon took advantage on the man advantage. Johansen passed to Umberger for a shot from a hard angle that handcuffed Backstrom, with Johansen then following the puck to get a whack at it on the rebound. Before the puck could be cleared, Foligno found the net on his second attempt from the right doorstep at the 5:40 mark. "We were able to maintain our energy and continue to push," Foligno said. "You saw great efforts from everybody tonight -- and Curtis McElhinney shut the door." The Wild had a prime chance to get back in the game when they had 1:13 of a 5-on-3 advantage midway through the second period. But McElhinney smothered a hard slap shot from the left point by Jason Pominville and then later appeared to stop a high shot by Zach Parise off his mask. "The big thing was that 5 on 3," Columbus coach Todd Richards said. "That was a critical point of the game. Curtis made probably three great saves for us and our (penalty) killers did a great job." Columbus was still controlling the play early in the third when, on a 3-on-3 rush, Jenner wristed a shot from the top of the left circle that eluded Backstrom high on his glove side. The goal, at the 4:38 mark, was the rookies third of the season. Umberger closed the scoring at the 9:05 mark when, while trailing the play, he benefited from a nifty feed from Foligno. Foligno had only one defender to beat but instead whipped a blind pass to Umberger who had virtually an empty net. DETROIT -- Torii Hunter put the Detroit Tigers ahead with his bat and scored two runs with his 38-year-old legs to help the Detroit Tigers beat the Minnesota Twins 7-1 on Wednesday night. Minnesota let the AL Central-leading Tigers score four runs with two outs in the seventh, and three more with two outs in the eighth. On a pivotal play in the seventh, right fielder Chris Hermann failed to get to Hunters drive between him and centre fielder Clete Thomas, allowing Austin Jackson to score easily from first. After Miguel Cabrera was walked intentionally, Prince Fielder struck out, but backup catcher Ryan Doumit let the ball get past him and relief pitcher Caleb Thielbar didnt cover home plate. That mistake gave Hunter a clear path to score. "I was always told by Kirby Puckett, Be a hyena. Always take advantage of the weak link," Hunter said. "I saw the pitcher sitting there, looking at the play and the plate was wide open. That play never develops if Prince doesnt run. He did what he had to do, make them throw the ball and I was able to score." Twins manager Ron Gardenhire lamented the mental mistake by the 26-year-old Thielbar. "The kid got caught watching the play and didnt get to home plate," Gardenhire said. "Thats automatic. You have to cover the plate. He knows that better than anyone right now." Victor Martinez followed with an RBI double to put Detroit up 4-1. Twins second baseman Brian Dozier bobbled a grounder in the eighth, the teams first error in six games, and the miscue loaded the bases for Cabrera, who cleared them with his 25th double that gave him 123 RBIs. The Tigers pinch-ran for Cabrera, who has been playing in pain, but felt better Wednesday than he did Tuesday when he aggravated a strain in his groin, abdominal and hip area. "I was pleased with his health," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said. Drew Smyly (5-0) struck out two in a perfect inning in relief of Anibal Sanchez. Jose Veras entered with two outs in the eighth inning and closed the game for his first save with the Tigers. Kevin Correia (8-10) allowed four runs -- two earned -- and nine hits over 6 2-3 innings. "I got us right into the position we needed to be, and I blew it," he said. Sanchez gave up one run and six hits over 6 2-3 innings. "Both starters were terrific," Leyland said. "Then, we finally broke through." And, Hunter had a lot to do with that. "Hes one of the toughest players Ive ever managed," Leyland said. "In big situations, he gets tougher." Gardenhire knows that perhaps as much as anyone because he was his manager for several years, and was among the least surprised at Comerica Park when he took advantage of the Twins poor play. "Weve seen him do things like that so many times," he said. "Thats just the way he plays the game. He had a huge at-bat, flipped the ball the other way for the double, and then he makes the hustle play when we fall asleep." After six scoreless innings, Dozier hit a two-out single in the seventh to give Minnesota the lead -- briefly. Pedro Florimon drew a walk on a full-count pitch in the seventh. He stole second, the 15th straight stolen base against the Tigers, who were relegated to using their third-best catcher, Bryan Holaday, who was filling in for injured backup Brayan Pena and starter Alex Avila who is on the concussion disabled list. The Tigers gave up a 16th straight stolen base later in the inning, extending the longest active streak in the major leagues, according to STATS LLC. Minnesota was without All-Star catcher Joe Mauer for the second straight day because he is on the seven-day concussion DL. Both teams had five hits through four innings and combined to leave 10 runners on base. Minnesotas Justin Morneau had two of his teams first four hits, including a double in the third, a day after having a season-high four hits. NOTES: Avila was cleared for a rehab assignment, and is scheduled to play for Triple-A Toledo on Thursday at Louisville. ... The Twins recalled Chris Colabello from Triple-A Rochester to take Joe Mauers spot on the roster, and put the rookie at 1B on Wednesday. ... Pena missed the game with a bruised big right toe. ... His second visit, not so much. Roark (7-5) allowed four runs on 10 hits and one walk over six innings in a 7-2 setback in front of several friends and family members, as the Cubs snapped his personal streak of four consecutive victories on Friday. The loss took place 10 months after the University of Illinois product was credited for a victory in relief at Wrigley Field, the first appearance of his career there. "I pitched here last year, so I got all the jitters out when I saw everybody and (heard) everybody chanting my name out there in the bleachers," Roark said. "I got them all out then." Nine of the 10 hits Roark gave up were singles, including a half-dozen by the last four batters in the order. "I was base hit to death," he said. "They were squaring the ball up and hitting it right through the holes, so you know, theres nothing you can do about it. I get them again I believe on the Fourth of July, so Ill come back out and go get em then." The Nationals took the first two games of the four-game set. "The last couple of days with Doug (Fister) and Tanner, theyve put together some long at-bats," Washington manager Matt Williams said. "In that one long (fourth) inning for Tanner today and a couple long innings for Doug last night, they were grinding out at-bats on em. Its a credit to their hitters, too. We didnt get it done again today, but we get two (games) tomorrow to think about it." Catcher John Baker had three hits, a walk and four RBIs, while batterymate Jason Hammel continued his dominance of the Nationals with 6 1-3 innings of two-run ball. "(The players) have been developing a personality as a team," Cubs skipper Rick Renteria said. "Theyre having fun and getting to know eaach other, doing whatever it takes to play the game (the right way).dddddddddddd" A .160 hitter at game time, Baker capped his big day with a bases-loaded, three-run double off reliever Jerry Blevins in the seventh inning. The four RBIs doubled his season total to eight. He also had four RBIs against the Nationals on Sept. 4, 2009, in Washington. Chris Coghlan, Justin Ruggiano and Ryan Sweeney each had a pair of hits in the 13-hit attack. After Adam LaRoche launched a solo homer to right field that tied the score at 2-all in the fourth inning, Hammel mowed down the next 10 batters before Wilson Ramos singles with one out in the seventh inning. Reliever Brian Schlitter entered the game and induced Ian Desmond to bounce into an inning-ending double play. The Cubs never looked back after Sweeneys two-out, two-run single gave them a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning. NOTES: Cubs OF Junior Lake was cleared by team physicians but did not play. He reluctantly left the series opener the previous night after a head-first collision with a steel door in right-centre field. President of baseball operations Theo Epstein said the organization would look into padding the doors for safety. ... Each team plans to use its so-called 26th man in the day-night doubleheader on Saturday -- rookie Dallas Beeler (0-0) for the Cubs in the opener and Blake Treinen (0-3) for the Nationals in the nightcap. Gio Gonzalez (4-4) will open for the visitors in the afternoon contest, while Jeff Samardzija (2-6) will get the ball for the home team in the second game. The Nationals are expected to promote LHP Xavier Cedeno from Triple-A Syracuse for the twin bill, while RHP Taylor Hill will move down to create a roster spot. ... The Nationals are hoping that OF Bryce Harper (left thumb surgery) will return to the parent club early next week. HARRISON, N.J. -- Fabian Johnson scored his first international goal and Clint Dempsey doubled the lead after a defensive lapse as the United States beat Turkey 2-1 Sunday in the second of three World Cup warm-up matches for the Americans before they head to Brazil. Tim Howard played the first half in his 99th international appearance, and with his 54th win surpassed Kasey Keller to set the American record for wins by a goalkeeper. The U.S. went ahead when Johnson made a run and laid the ball off to Bradley. As Johnson continued his run, Bradley chipped the ball over the defence to Johnson, who slotted in with a left-footed volley from 6 yards in the 26th minute. Johnson, playing at right back, had not scored in 20 previous international appearances. Jake Guentzel Jersey . On Saturday night, Winnipegs strong offense was again accompanied by some fantastic pitching which gave the Fish a commanding victory. The Goldeyes (2-1) beat the Sox (2-1) 12-2. With the win, the Fish take a 2-1 advantage in the two teams four-game season-opening series at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium. In the first, with the two lead-off Winnipeg batters having already been retired, Ray Sadler got on base with a single. Reggie Abercrombie then stepped to the plate and hit a two-run home run to open the scoring. Matt Jackson then provided the Goldeyes with some fantastic pitching. Jackson allowed only four hits in his six and one-third innings of work. He struck out five, and only gave up one walk. "It was a repeat of last night with Jarvis," Goldeyes Pitching Coach Jamie Vermilyea said of Jackson on the Jewel 101 Post-Game Show, "throwing strikes and dictating each at bat." The Goldeyes offense went back to work in the top of the third. They got three runs in the frame, one on a RBI from Jake Blackwood, one on a RBI from Sadler, and one on a Sox fielding error. Winnipegs bats were quiet in the fourth through seventh innings, but their offense picked itt back up in the eighth.dddddddddddd Ryan Pineda led off the top of the inning with a solo home run. Luis Alen then hit a single, and would eventually come around to score on an error. Sadler and Abercrombie would get on base, and then Josh Mazzola stepped up and hit a three-run home run. The Fish didnt stop there. In the top of the ninth, the Goldeyes loaded the bases, and Sadler hit a two RBI single that scored Kuhn and Jordan Guida — who was pinch-hitting for Alen. Sadler would end the night going an impressive four for six at the plate, with three runs, and three RBI. "When youve got your three-hole hitter locked in, good things are going to happen," said Vermilyea. The Goldeyes bullpen pitched extremely well, and was able to keep the shutout intact until the bottom of the ninth, when the Sox were able to score their two runs. One of which came on the first professional hit for Sox player Josh Miller. The 12 runs that the Goldeyes scored are the most theyve put on the scoreboard so far this season. The Goldeyes will play one more game against the Sox tomorrow at 6 p.m. with the expected pitching match-up to be Winnipegs Nick Hernandez against Amarillos Michael Nannini. The Goldeyes then head to Laredo to take on the Laredo Lemurs in a three-series that starts Monday. Brad Richards looked to be on his way out of New York in 2013, when former Rangers coach John Tortorella not only demoted the veteran centre but scratched him in the playoffs. A year later, coach Alain Vigneault started down the same path by putting the 34-year-old on left wing of the Rangers fourth line in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup final. Richards played just nine minutes 22 seconds at even strength and a total of 13:20 including power-play time. Vigneault said he met with his lines individually, including Richards, Brian Boyle and Derek Dorsett. He wanted to spell out his reasoning and assignments. "I talked to Brads line. I talked to Brad about the decision I made," Vigneault said Wednesday night after the Rangers 2-1 victory that staved off elimination. "I mean, at this time of the year its only about one thing: Its about the team. You guys know how Richards has been this year, the ultimate pro. Hes fine with whatever I do." Richards, a strong candidate to be bought out of the final six years and US$27 million left on his contract, has no points in the Cup final and just four goals and four assists in 23 games since a strong opener against the Philadelphia Flyers. Vigneault said his line shuffling had to do with giving forward Dominic Moore a bigger role. As a result, though, he put Richards in a tough spot to be effective on a checking fourth line. Richards skated just 13 shifts. The 34-year-old managed a couple of quality scoring chances on the power play and was on the ice for a strong five-on-five shift that ended with a Kings penalty. Still, though, longtime friend Martin St. Louis knows what a demotion can mean to any star players ego. Richards was once a Canadian Olympian and 90-point scorer in the NHL. "Richies a pro and a tremendous leader," St. Louis said. "Im sure its tough for him. Hes a pro and a great teammate." Richards isnt expected to be a teammate of St. Louis for much longer. The Rangers have one more compliance buyout to use and just one more off-season window in which to use it, and these playoffs have done little to dispel the notion that hell be playing elsewhere next season. Olympic downhill contender Tina Weirather of Liechtenstein says she is struggling with a leg injury ahead of Wednesdays race. Weirather withdrew from the super-combined on Monday, and posted on Facebook that it was a "difficult moment." Weirather is second in the World Cup downhill standings this season behind Maria Hoefl-Riesch of Germany. The operation was performed Thursday in Los Angeles.Chestnut Hill, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - The second-ranked Virginia Cavaliers put their perfect record on the line on Saturday afternoon, as they take on the Boston College Eagles in an ACC affair at the Conte Forum. Tony Bennetts Cavaliers are one of just two unbeatens left in the country, the other being the top-ranked Kentucky Wildcats. Virginia is off to its best start since the 1980-81 season and moved to 16-0 overall and 4-0 in league play with Tuesdays 65-42 rout of Clemson. Jim Christians Eagles are treading water right now at 8-7 overall. League play has been particularly challenging for BC, which is still searching for its first ACC win of the season. The Eagles are 0-3 in the ACC, but did halt a three-game slide with a hard-fought 64-57 OT victory against local rival Harvard on Wednesday. Virginia holds a 10-7 advantage in the series with Boston College and that includes a 7-7 mark in ACC games. The Cavaliers have won three of the last four meetings, including a 77-67 decision in Charlottesville last season. Still, Boston College has won four of the five meetings in Chestnut Hill. There is no secret as to how Virginia likes to win games. Under Bennett, the Cavaliers have utilized stifling defensive play and this year is no different. Virginia ranks first in the nation in scoring defense (50.6 ppg), holding foes to a meager .338 shooting, while holding a hefty +10.9 rebounding margin. Just because it is a defense-first mentality at Virginia, doesnt mean the team is void of offensive talent. The Cavs are shooting an impressive .485 from the floor this season, with three of tthe five starters averaging double figures.dddddddddddd Justin Anderson paces the team at 14.9 ppg. Malcolm Brogdon is next in line at 13.2 ppg, followed closely by Anthony Gill and his 11.8 ppg. Virginia dominated at both ends of the floor against Clemson, holding the Tigers to a mere .357 shooting effort, while delivering on a cool 50 percent of its own shots. The Cavaliers really blew the game open in the second half, converting a scorching 62.5 percent from the floor over the final 20 minutes of action. Brogdon and Anderson were the leaders at the offensive end, netting 16 and 15 points in the win, respectively. Patrick Heckmann caught fire in the overtime session, netting nine of his 14 points in the frame to lead Boston College to a thrilling win over rival Harvard last time out. Olivier Hanlan had a strong game as well, finishing with 17 points and eight rebounds. Big man Dennis Clifford posted a double- double with 13 points and 10 boards, while Aaron Brown contributed 12 points for the Eagles, who shot 51.9 percent from the floor for the game, including a sizzling 6-of-7 in the overtime session. The shots havent fallen quite as efficiently on the year for Boston College, which enters this game with modest offensive numbers, averaging 65.8 ppg on 43.8 percent shooting. Hanlan is a jack-of-all-trades kind of player who gets involved in every facet of the game. He leads the team in scoring (16.4 ppg), assists (4.5 apg) and steals (1.8 spg) and also grabs just over four rebounds per outing (4.1). Brown is a close second in the scoring column with his 14.4 ppg. SAN JOSE, Calif. - Nicklas Backstrom scored the winning goal in the shootout to lead the Washington Capitals to their first win in San Jose in more than 20 years, 3-2 over the Sharks on Saturday night. Eric Fehr and Chris Brown scored in regulation for the Capitals, who had lost 11 times and tied once since winning their first game at the Shark Tank on Oct. 30, 1993. This is only Washingtons second win in its last 19 games overall against San Jose. Braden Holtby made 34 saves in his first start since March 6 in place of the banged-up Jaroslav Halak. Patrick Marleau and James Sheppard scored for the Sharks, who missed a chance to clinch their 10th straight playoff berth. Antti Niemi made 23 saves. Evgeny Kuznetsov put the Capitals ahead in the shootout when he scored in the opening round. But Marleau tied it in the third round before Backstrom beat Niemi for the winner. The Capitals had lost five straight shootouts while San Jose had won seven in a row in the tiebreaker. The Sharks appeared poised to clinch the playoffs when Sheppard blocked a shot by Jason Chimera early in the third period and then scored on a breakaway against Holtby to put San Jose up 2-1. But the Capitals got the equalizer when they got a fortunate bounce with 7:30 remaining. Dustin Penner took the puck from Scott Hannan behind the net and fed Brown, whose shot deflected off defenceman Dan Boyle and past Niemi for his first career goal. The Sharks lost two of three on this homestand, beating Anaheim in a showdown for first place in between losses to Washington and Florida — two Eastern Conference teams out of playoff position. San Jose is three points ahead of the Ducks in the Pacific Division although Anaheim has two games in hand. The game was more crucial to Washingtons playoff hopes. The Capitals have earned points in five straight games to tie Detroit for eighth place in the East with 79 points. The Red Wings have two games in hand. The Capitals jumped on top with help from a lucky bounce and a strong forecheck. Jason Chimera got the puck away from Logan Couture along the boards to set up Fehr for a shot that was blocked. Justin Braun tried to clear the puck out of danger, but it hit teammate Matt Nieto in the leg and bounced into the net for a goal credited to Fehr. Nieto helped the Sharks tie it in the closing seconds of the period when he put a wraparound attempt on net following a turnover by Mike Green. Holtby made the save on the initial shot, but Marleau knocked in the rebound following a scramble for 30th goal with 5.6 seconds remaining. NOTES: Marleau has seven career 30-goal seasons. ... The Capitals have as many wins (two) in the Cow Palace, where the Sharks played their first two seasons, as they have at the Shark Tank, which opened in 1993-94. ... This game finishes a stretch where the Sharks played 13 of 14 games against the Eastern Conference. They wont play the East again this season unless they make the Stanley Cup finals. Zadorov scored on 5-on-3 advantages in a 1:01 span in the second period to give Russia a 4-3 lead. The 6-foot-4 defenceman plays for the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League. Russia will face Sweden, a 6-0 winner over Slovakia, in the semifinals Saturday. In the other quarterfinals, Canada beat Switzerland 4-1, and Finland topped the Czech Republic 5-3. "We want to play Sweden," Zadorov said before the Swedes victory. "It was a close game last time (3-2 loss), and were going to watch some video and play better." Pavel Buchnevich also scored twice for Russia, Buffalo Sabres centre Mikhail Grigorenko added a goal, and Andrei Vasilevski made 30 saves. "The power plays were the game-changer," said Grigorenko, who has two goals and an assist in 18 games for Buffalo this season. "We scored two goals. We took the lead, and we kept it. Those two 5-on-3s in a row were the key. "This game made us a better team today than we were yesterday. I think we deserved to win. Hopefully, we can keep the same energy, same compete level for the semifinals." New Jersey Devils farmhand Stefan Matteau, Plymouth Whalers forward Ryan Hartman and Wisconsins Nic Kerdiles had first-period goals for the United States, the tournament winner last year in Russia. "Penalties," said Matteau, off for tripping when Zadorov scored the tying goal. "They buried their chances. The refs did their job. I know North American teams coming over here ... maybe the officiating is different, but we still gave them a reason to call penalties. Thats what shot us in the foot.dddddddddddd But we got power plays, too. We didnt finish." Providences John Gillies stopped 20 shots. "Its not a good feeling, but I think it will make us all better players," Gillies said. Russia has won the under-20 event 13 times, the first nine as the Soviet Union. Canada advanced to the semifinals for the 16th straight year. It won the last of its record 15 titles in 2009 in Ottawa. Sweden, 5-0-0 in the tournament, is seeking its third title and second in three years. "Were getting closer - two games away," Colorado College defenceman Gustav Olofsson said. "It feels more exciting and more fun to play when you get closer to gold." Nashville Predators winger Filip Forsberg had two goals and two assists, Lucas Wallmark also scored twice, Carolina Hurricanes centre Elias Lindholm added a goal and three assists, Jacob de la Rose had a goal, and Erie Otters goalie Oscar Dansk made 18 saves. Lindholm has three goals and four assists in 21 games this season for Carolina, and Forsberg has a goal and four assists in 12 games for Nashville. "We have to stay out of the penalty box a little more," Forsberg said. "Theyre pretty dangerous and its going to be even more dangerous against Russia. Thats something we have to work on." Finland overcame a 3-1 deficit to beat the Czech Republic, taking a 4-3 lead on Saku Kinnunens goal with 8:21 left. Saku Maenalanen scored twice, and Juuso Ikonen and Henri Ikonen added goals for Finland. Dominik Simon, Martin Prochazka and Radek Faksa scored for the Czech Republic. Norway beat Germany 3-0 in Game 1 of the best-of-three relegation series. Joachim Svendsen made 29 saves, and Martin Ronnild, Didrik Svendsen and Andreas Klavestad scored. Elmont, NY - California Chrome, winner of the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes, took a nice long gallop Tuesday morning at Belmont Park as he continues to train for Saturdays 146th Belmont Stakes. With trainer Art Sherman in attendance, the Triple Crown contender galloped 2 3/8 miles over Belmonts main track. The chestnut colt had been galloping two miles most mornings. "I thought he looked better now than he did after the Preakness," Sherman said. "I couldnt believe how much weight he put on. He really looks good right now. Going on the Triple Crown trail, its kind of rough. Hes an amazing horse." The number of potential challengers to California Chrome for the Belmont Stakes was reduced Tuesday with the withdrawal of Kid Cruz. "We have decided to pass on the Belmont," trainer Linda Rice said. "Frankly, he didnt perform at Pimlico. It was a flat effort on his part. Well just look for an easy race for him to get him back on track. Its a long summer." Owned by Vina Del Mar Thoroughbreds and Black Swan Stable, Kid Cruz was eighth in the Preakness on May 17. He won two stakes in Maryland, the Private Terms and Federico Tesio Stakes, that put him into the field versus the Kentucky Derby champ. "I just think his last effort was a non-effort on his part," Rice added. "Hes a nice horse, and we want to do the right thing by him. Were going to consider the Easy Goer (Belmont Stakes Day), but we may decide to wait for the Dwyer (Belmont Park on July 5)." Wicked Strong, fourth in the Kentucky Derby, galloped 1 1/2 miles on Belmonts main track Tuesday morning for trainer Jimmy Jerkens. "I galloped him at 7 oclock because I thought it was going to get kind of hot and I didnt want to wait until 9:30 or 10 oclock like we usually do the first day back after working hard," Jerkens said. "Hes doing great. "He had a pretty good excuse in the Derby. His Wood (first in Wood Memorial) was great, and hes trained really well since then. He really is training great. But, you never know until you lead them over there." Saturday should be excellent for the 1 1/2-mile "Test of the Champion." It will be a rematch of their first-round clash last year when Japan defeated Canada 4-1 to reach the World Group quarter-finals for the first time in its history.MIAMI -- Extra pass, easy win. Its a tried-and-true formula for the Miami Heat. LeBron James scored 25 points, Chris Bosh added 24 and the Heat beat the winless Washington Wizards 103-93 on Sunday night to snap a rare two-game slide. Dwyane Wade scored 20 points for Miami, which hasnt dropped three straight regular-season games since Jan. 10-13, 2012. The Heat (2-2) had 32 assists on 37 field goals, including on all nine of their baskets in the third quarter. "Thats what we do," James said. "We understand that its easy for everyone when we move the ball, share the ball and we play like that." Including playoffs, the Heat are now 100 games over .500 at home since the start of the 2010-11 season -- 127-27. And when collecting at least 25 assists in the Big Three era, they are 58-5. Of the 10 Heat players who played, nine scored, nine got at least one assist and all 10 grabbed at least one rebound. "The intensity was better and the consistent ball movement was better than its been," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. Bradley Beal scored 19 points for the Wizards. Marcin Gortat finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds for Washington (0-3), which shot 43 per cent and allowed the Heat to convert 21 turnovers into 25 points. "I thought we battled well," Beal said. "We still had a few breakdowns on defence and didnt make a lot of shots on offence. But we did a great job moving the ball. We just have to knock down shots and limit our turnovers as much as possible." Miamis last three-game slide was against Boston in the 2012 Eastern Conference finals, a series the Heat won in seven games. With two defeats in three games to open this season, Sunday marked only the second time since James, Bosh and Wade teamed up that they took the court with a losing regular-season record. The other was after their first game together in October 2010. "You can feel it, and its special when it happens," Wade said of having so many assists as a team. "It just makes the game so much easier." Washingtons Trevor Ariza got hot to start the fourth, as the Wizards turned what looked like a runaway into a game again. Ariza missed all eight of his shots in the first three quarters, thenn had four baskets -- three of them 3-pointers -- in the first 4:48 of the final period as the Wizards got within 91-80.dddddddddddd That got the Heat to take a timeout, and got James back into the game. The Wizards kept chipping away, with Beal scoring and getting fouled with 41.3 seconds left to get his team within 100-93. Beal missed the free throw, it stayed a three-possession game, and the Wizards let 15 seconds run off the ensuing Miami possession before fouling Bosh. By then, the outcome was clear. Mario Chalmers had eight assists for the Heat. Ariza and Martell Webster each scored 13 points for Washington, which got 11 points and nine assists from John Wall. "This is how weve got to play," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "Nobody wants to lose but I thought we took a good step in the right direction." Before the game, Spoelstra said the early struggles this season were simply a matter of Miami not clicking at times. That wasnt an issue Sunday. James got it going early for Miami, scoring 14 points in the first quarter and connecting on all three of his 3-point tries in that period. All five Miami starters got into the scoring act early, and the bench added 12 points in the second quarter as the Heat extended the lead. About all the Heat could really complain about in this one was the opening minutes, in which they found themselves in a 9-2 deficit, continuing a trend of falling behind early. Miami trailed 9-2 against Chicago at home in the season-opener, then 19-0 (and 26-4) at Philadelphia, then 11-3 at Brooklyn. Sundays deficit didnt last long. A 14-2 run over a 5-minute stretch of the opening quarter put the Heat up by five and the margin grew throughout, starting with 33-27 after 12 minutes, 61-48 at halftime and 87-64 entering the final period. "We know what works for us," Wade said. "Sometimes we just dont do it." NOTES: James ran his double-digit scoring streak to 499 straight regular-season games, going back to January 2007. His teams are 363-136 in those games. ... Wizards F Nene (left calf strain) did not play. ... The Heat are 75-11 in their last 86 regular-season home games. ... Ariza was whistled for a flagrant foul in the third quarter. WINNIPEG - Kyle Anderson got in a fight on Thursday night. In fact, he went out on the field at Shaw Park and beat up the strike zone. Too bad he didnt get any run support. Anderson, the Winnipeg Goldeyes 24-year-old lefthander, retired the first 11 men he faced and finished with a solid six-hit effort over 7 1/3 innings, but the Goldeyes bats went silent and the St. Paul Saints beat Winnipeg 2-0 in the opener of an important three-game intra-divisional weekend series. With the win, the Saints not only put a halt to Winnipegs four-game winning streak ,but they also pulled into a first-place tie with the Goldeyes and Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks in the American Associations North Division. All three teams are now 18-10 on the season. "Kyle pitched real well for us," said Forney in the subdued Goldeyes clubhouse afterward. "He got first outs in most innings and he really pounded the strike zone. Unfortunately, we couldnt score any runs for him. We didnt even get very many men on base tonight. Baseball is a funny game that way. Their starter was real good and theres no doubt their pitching beat us tonight." St. Paul scored a run in the fifth as Dwight Childs singled home Joey Becker and then, in the seventh, Devin Thaut doubled home Childs. And that was it for both offenses on a cool, rainy evening in downtown Winnipeg. The Goldeyes had only seven hits on the evening. Josh Mazzola was the only Goldeyes player that had more than one (two singles). Saints starter Nick Barnese pitched seven innings of shut out baseball to get the win. "Thats an aggressive (St. Paul) team at the plate," said Saturdays starter for the Goldeyes, Chandler Barnard. "Im going to have to have my best stuff tomorrow. As we saw tonight from Kyle, if you throw strikes and get ahead in the count you can be successful against them. Im going to have to be aggressive, because I know theyre going to be aggressive." Anderson (2-2, 1.22, ERA) suffered the loss for Winnipeg, while Barnese (3-1, 3.48 ERA) got the win for St. Paul. Dan Sattler got his seventh save of the season for the Saints. Pernell McPhee Redskins Jersey . With the final four being arguably the four best – and most complete – teams from the regular season, picking a winner is not as easy as it sounds. For one, he still gets to crank the intensity to the max. "I push pretty angry. I ran pretty angry too though, but I have fun doing it," Lumsden said. After the Penguins defeat in Game 6, it was reported that the teams principle owner and former captain, Mario Lemieux, came down to the locker room to calm the 26-year-old captain down. During their talk, Lemieux was reported to have discussed with Crosby how a captains erratic behaviour can negatively impact the team.Lemieuex told Crosby... "You cant behave the way you did at the end of the game, it gives off a bad vibe to your teammates, it gives off a vibe that might be portraying you in a negative light, especially when youre struggling."Lemieux followed that up with a statement that Crosby has most likely understood since the first time he stepped foot onto an NHL rink. "..star players just have to fight through things like this"Super Mario has been Sidney Crosbys mentor ever since the Penguins selected him first overall in 2005, and he certainly can empathize with the Penguins current captain on what it feels like when emotions get the best of a player during a heated contest.Theres no better example of Lemieux letting his emotions get the better of him than during this bout between him and then referee, Kerry Fraser. The incident started when Lemieux received a high-sticking penalty, and while he sat in the box Fraser skated over and shared a few words that sent the Penguins captain into an uncontrollable rage. Lemieux shot outt of the penalty box towards Fraser before being restrained by teammates and promptly sent to the dressing rooms with a game-misconduct penalty.ddddddddddddThe 1993-94 season was a trying one for Lemieux, just one year removed from announcing he had been diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma while also coming off of an off-season surgery to fix a herniated muscle in his back. The injury to his back caused Lemieux to miss fifty-eight games that season and his mounting frustration with his injuries began to show, especially in his incident with Fraser. There was another occurrence earlier in Lemieuxs career where he let his frustration boil over, one that would serve Crosby as a sobering reminder of what can happen when a star player picks a fight with the wrong guy. During a regular season game between the Capitals and Penguins, an irritated Lemieux engaged in a shoving match with Bob Gould that turned into a fist fight. The end result? A broken Jaw for Lemieux and a night spent at George Washington University Hospital.Crosby definitely already knows what it feels like to have a broken jaw, and were sure it wasnt too enjoyable. The last thing the Penguins need in Game 7 is their captain engaging in unnecessary fights. So, to Sid the Kid, it may be best to take Lemieuxs advice, as he certainly knows what happens when keeping it real goes wrong. Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer gets the call in net as Canada opens up its World Championship group stage play on Friday against France. You can catch the action live on TSN at 9:30am et/6:30am pt. Coach Dave Tippett says he made the call of Reimer over Edmonton Oilers goalie Ben Scrivens, Reimers former teammate, strictly due to seniority. Its expected that both goalies will split time at the tournament in Belarus with Scrivens likely seeing action in Canadas next game on Saturday against Slovakia. Reimer last played for Canada at the 2011 World Championships in Slovakia, posting a 4-0 record in the group stage. Jonathan Bernier, now Reimers teammate with the Leafs, was preferred for Canadas quarterfinal game and dropped a 2-1 decision to Russia. This is Scrivenss first time representing Canada at any level. Meanwhile, Kevin Bieksa was named Team Canadas captain on Thursday. Coach Dave Tippett said Bieksa got the nod because hes outgoing but also plays hard and with passion. Jason Chimera is one alternate because he brings the experience of winning at this tournament before and Kyle Turris is the other because he bridges young and old on the roster. One thing Canadas leadership group has in common is a love for keeping things light on the ice. Thats part of what Bieksa thinks his role is, but he also expects his teammates to take the tournament seriously. "Just to keep guys loose having fun and then focused for the games," the Vancouver Canucks defenceman said. "Everybodys coming over here for a purpose. We didnt fly all this way just to have a good time. We flew here to win games and to continue on the standard that Canada set at the Olympics. Were going to come to compete." At 32, Bieksa is the fourth-oldest player on the team, younger than only Chimera (35), Joel Ward (33) and Alex Burrows (32). There are also a handful of very young players, including Nathan MacKinnon (18), Sean Monahan (19), Jonathan Huberdeau (20), and Mark Scheifele (21). Bieksa is in charge of helping meld this diverse group together. "Its been pretty seamless so far. Everybody brings something to the table," Bieksa said after practice at Chizhovka-Arena. "The young guys are young and (add) a new perspective and energy and the older guys, theres some guys that have played in this tournament a few times and they know what to expect and you lean on them for some advice. Its a good mix." Chimera is Canadas only player with an IIHF World Hockey Championship gold medal, won in 2007 in Moscow. His message to a lot of his teammates is that they never know when theyll be able to wear the Maple Leaf again. That could be true of Chimera, too, and if it is the Washington Capitals winger is making sure he enjoys it. Even with two children at home, his wife was supportive of him coming to Minsk to play in his third world championship. "Hockey keeps you young," said Chimera, whos 4 1/2 years too young to be able to play without a visor. "Its just awesome, you see these young kids, how talented they are, they keep it light. A lot of them were pretty nervous coming over here, but I try to keep it as light as possible." Thursdays first practice in Minsk following an exhibition game against Switzerland in Zurich was light but up-tempo. Tippett and assistants Paul Maurice and Peter DeBoer had plenty of teaching to do a day before Canada opens the tournament against France. James Reimer will start against France, while Ben Scrivens is set to start against Slovakia on Saturday night. "It goes solely off seniority," Tippett said. "Scrivens was upset because he thought he shouldve got the call because he had 19 seconds longer than Reimer the other day (in the exhibition game)." Reimer is playing at the world championships for the second time after going 4-0-0 in 2011 before being replaced by now-Toronto Maple Leafs teammate Jonathan Bernier. With Scrivens -- whos now with the Edmonton Oilers -- on board this time, Reimer is sharing the net with a former teammate. Come the start of the 2014-15 NHL season, he very well could have another goaltending partner if the Leafs trade the restricted free agent. Reimers season in Toronto didnt go as he planned, and its only natural for him to think scouts and general managers will be watching him in Minsk. "I assume so. I think theyre scouting everyone," Reimer said. "I think everyones taking a peek at whoever might have a contract up or might not, thats what theyre here to do. Any time youre playing, especially in a different situation, theyre watching to see how you react and respond. But in every NHL game theres scouts and GMs watching, too. Its just one of those things wherever youre playing competitively, people will be watching." Theres plenty for Tippett to watch for early in this tournament that could affect his plan going forward. On Thursday he kept the top line of Burrows, Turris and MacKinnon together from Tuesdays exhibition game and tinkered elsewhere. Nazem Kadri centred Cody Hodgson and Troy Brouwer, while Philadelphia Flyers teammates Brayden Schenn and Matt Read skated with Huberdeau. Chimera and Capitals teammate Ward remained together, and Tippett said hell keep an eye on having either Scheifele or Monahan between them. Because this tournament is such a "scramble" with so little preparation time, Tippett is just trying to get create some chemistry before the first puck drop. "Youve got to get your players in roles early," he said. "Always subject to change, but I think one of the most important factors of a tournament like this is you try to get everybody in their spots as quick as you can." That starts with establishing Bieksa as captain. Burrows voiced support for that choice because his Canucks teammate is good at bringing people together. "He keeps it fun, he likes to have a good time," Burrows said. "But at the same time when its time to work and do the right things, hes the first one to lead the way." Korey Toomer 49ers Jersey . HAMILTON, Ont. -- Jeremiah Masoli threw three second-half touchdown passes as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats beat the Montreal Alouettes 28-23 in the CFL exhibition opener for both teams Saturday. Masoli, entering his second CFL season, put Hamilton ahead 28-23 with a 16-yard TD pass to Sam Giguere at 9:21 of the fourth quarter at McMaster Universitys Ron Joyce Stadium. Montreal led 23-21 on Delbert Alvarados 26-yard field goal at 2:27. Masoli gave Hamilton a 21-20 advantage with two third-quarter TD strikes. He hit C.J. Gable on a six-yard pass at 6:32, then capped a 105-yard, six-play march with a 20-yard toss to Luke Tasker at 12:31. Alvarados 43-yard field goal had put Montreal ahead 20-7. Zach Collaros, Hamiltons top off-season acquisition, played the opening quarter and finished 5-of-8 passing for 52 yards and had a 13-yard run. Tyrell Sutton and Kyle Graves had the Montreal touchdowns. Sean Whyte added the converts and a field goal while Alvarado booted two. Dan LeFevour scored Hamiltons other touchdown. Brett Lauther had two converts while Justin Medlock added one. Alex Brinks nine-yard TD strike to Graves at 13:38 of the second staked Montreal to a 17-7 half-time lead. Graves, the former Acadia quarterback trying to make the Alouettes as a receiver, scored after Whyte connected from 43 yards at 10:20 to break a 7-7 tie. Sutton opened the scoring with a one-yard TD run at 9:33 of the first, set up by a pass interference call in the end zone on Hamiltons Brandon Stewart. Montreal took over at the Ticats 25-yard line after Medlock was tackled recovering an errant third-down snap resulting in a 40-yard loss on the play. LeFevour tied it with a one-yard TD run on third down on the final play of the first. The Bruins surged ahead early against the Carolina Hurricanes and then relied on their penalty-killers to earn a 4-1 victory on Monday night. Beginning with its 2010-11 Stanley Cup championship season, Boston is 100-6-6 in games it has taken a two-goal lead. It took the Bruins about 10 minutes to establish the margin against Carolina, which had won five of seven in the series. Boston killed four Carolina penalties, including 63 seconds when down two skaters, to extend its streak of consecutive penalty kills to 32. "Its commitment," Boston coach Claude Julien said. "Most of all, were winning battles. Were doing a good job of standing teams up." That wasnt the case in late October when Boston allowed goals on five consecutive power plays. "We were really awful on the (penalty kill), which is really unusual for us," said Tuukka Rask, who made 23 saves. "We wanted to go back to basics, killing one penalty at a time." Reilly Smith and Carl Soderberg had a goal and an assist each in the first period. Johnny Boychuk scored midway through the third, and Milan Lucic added an empty-net goal for Boston, which has 11 points in seven games (5-1-1). Carolinas Tuomo Ruutu scored his first goal of the season with 4.8 seconds left in the opening period, but Boston didnt waver. "That was impressive for me that we kept our composure despite that one," Julien said. Bostons penalty-killing unit was especially effective in the second period, when it worked morre than a minute of the Hurricanes 5-on-3 advantage after penalties to Boychuk and Gregory Campbell.ddddddddddddThe Bruins also killed a third-period penalty while leading 2-1. Carolina has scored only one goal in its last 21 power plays. The Hurricanes played their first game since Oct. 24 with Cam Ward in net. Ward, who missed 10 games because of a leg injury, made 26 saves. He rebounded from a rough start in which he gave up two goals on Bostons first four shots. "I thought Cam competed hard," Carolina coach Kirk Muller said. "He started off (with) two that werent easy to make saves on. After that, he hung in there." Smith gave Boston the lead with a power-play goal 2:31 into the game. Loui Eriksson passed to Soderberg, who found Smith in front for a one-timer that got past Ward for his third goal. Soderberg redirected a shot by defenceman Dennis Seidenberg to put Boston ahead 2-0 midway through the first period. The Hurricanes netted their only goal when a pass from Eric Staal went off the skate of Bostons Patrice Bergeron and caromed to Ruutu, who nudged the puck past Rask. NOTES: With Ward activated from the injured list, the Hurricanes reassigned goalie Mike Murphy to Charlotte (AHL). ... Ward is 12-12-2 against Boston in 26 games. ... Carolina centre Jordan Staal played in his 500th NHL game. ... Bostons Eriksson extended his point streak to six games with an assist on Smiths goal. ... TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays placed outfielder Colby Rasmus on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, recalled outfielder Anthony Gose from triple-A Buffalo and sent right-hander Dustin McGowan back to the bullpen. Rasmus, who is dealing with tightness in his right hamstring, is batting .222 with nine homers and 19 RBIs in 37 games this season. The move was retroactive to Tuesday, the Blue Jays said in a release. McGowan was a starter earlier in his career before injuries kept him off the mound for extended periods of time. He rebounded last year with a decent season out of the bullpen and the team gave him another shot as a starter. The right-hander was 2-2 with a 5.08 earned-run average over eight starts this season. "I think it makes us stronger," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of the move in a pre-game availability. "Ive always thought that but Im also on board with the other thing. In talking to him, hes feeling healthy and all that, but the last couple of starts the recovery time he hasnt felt as good. And I think it would be a shame for him to end up getting hurt out there again and his career is over. "Thats part of my thinking. Were not talking about an average Joe out there. He was better than that last year. He could be a top-notch reliever for a few more years." The Blue Jays did not immediately name a replacement for McGowan in the rotation. He was scheduled to start Tuesday in Boston. Gibbons mentioned right-handers Marcus Stroman and Todd Redmond as possibilities from the current 25-man roster. Another possibility is right-hander Liam Hendriks, who is 5-0 with a 1.51 ERA for the Bisons. Gose has appeared in three games for Toronto this season. He entered Thursday nights game against Cleveland with a .333 average with two RBIs. In 28 games with the Bisons, Gose has a .236 average with two home runs and 10 RBIs. Aaron Colvin Jersey . PARADISE VALLEY, Ariz. (AP) -- The head of the committee that developed Major League Baseballs plan to expand instant replay says he is optimistic the system will be in place this season, even though owners and unions for players and umpires have yet to approve. Atlanta Braves President John Schuerholz said that because of the complexities, he expects the system will need three years of use to resolve problems that develop. The plan would give managers the right to challenge most calls except balls and strikes, with one challenge allowed in the first six innings and two from the seventh inning on. A successful challenge would not count against the limits. Schuerholz said he was uncertain whether owners would vote on the proposal during Thursdays meeting. Owners always could vote later by telephone. Schuerholz expects the umpires and players union to go along with the plan. "Theres been a great deal of dialogue," he said, "and our anticipation is that both of our partners will be willing and ready to go forward." The new executive director of the players association, Tony Clark, also sounded optimistic about expansion of video review. "Its been a challenge to try to navigate how best we do this without disrupting the game itself," Clark said in an interview with The Associates Press. Our guys are very concerned with making sure the game stays the same." Speaking Wednesday at the hotel where the owners were attending a quarterly meeting, Schuerholz said the replay expansion should enhance the sport. "We are in uncharted waters," he said. "But behind all of this and buttressing all of this we should remember that in the doing of this, managers will be given an opportunity that theyve never had in the history of the game, and that is to challenge a play and perhaps have it reversed, and perhaps have that reversal benefit their team, and win a game that might win a division that might get them into a playoff. And who knows from there?" Schuerholz has been joined on the replay committee by former managers Joe Torre and Tony La Russa, both current MLB executives. Scheurholz agreed with Clark that there will be adjustments after the system is put in place. "We feel like weve worked through this process in as much detail as possible," Schuerholz said. "We realize the further we get in, the complexities involved. And thats whats taken time. There will probably be complexities that show themselves that we might not have dealt with. But as I keep telling everyone, this is a three-year rollout. ... This is uncharted territory for us -- and for the industry and for the managers and for the replay officials and for the umpires. For everyone." Clark said he knows that "there are going to be challenges, and that despite wanting to fix everything so that it works perfectly from day one, that we may have to adjust some things as we go on." It also was uncertain whether the owners would vote this week on a proposal to ban home-plate collisions. That rule also would be subject to approval by the players union if it is to be implemented this season. MLB can implement it unilaterally in 2015. Sam Bradford Jersey . The night starts off with the Shooting Stars competition, followed by the Skills Challenge, the 3-Point Shootout and the main event, a showcase of athleticism known as the Slam-Dunk Contest. You can catch all of the action live starting at 8pm et/5pm pt on TSN2. Or, one could call All-Star Saturday, "Damian Lillard Day." The Portland All-Star, who competed in the Rising Stars game on Friday, is scheduled to participate in the Skills Challenge, 3-Point Shootout and Slam- Dunk Contest on Saturday. "Im happy that Im really a part of the weekend. I get to compete in all these events, and just to be in these guys company with all these stars," said Lillard. "It lets you know that the hard work is paying off." This year, much like last, Saturdays competitions are broken down into East vs. West. Paul George of the Indiana Pacers is the East captain, while Steph Curry guides the West. Both are starters in Sundays All-Star game. Saturdays happenings start at 8 p.m. ET. Up first will be the Shooting Stars, a simple enough competition where current NBAers join a legend and a WNBA star in a shooting contest from all over the floor. The first round will feature teams from the same conference against each other. The winning teams advance to the final round for the title. Each competitor will be stationed at one of the first three places, and the shot must be made before the next can be attempted. All three will chuck it up from near half-court and the team with the best time wins. Its a family affair for two of the teams as Curry will join his father Dell Curry and Becky Harmon of the San Antonio Silver Stars. On the East team, Tim Hardaway, Jr. of the New York Knicks will partner with his dad Tim and Elena Delle Donne of the Chicago Sky. Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder will pair with Karl Malone and Skylar Diggins of the Tulsa Shock. The other East team is the defending champion trio of Miamis Chris Bosh, Dominique Wilkins and Swin Cash of the Sky. The Skills Challenge underwent some changes this year. Now, there will be two two-man teams from each conference competing against each other to reach the East vs. West final. It will now be a relay format. The Eastern teams will be rookie Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks and All-Star DeMar DeRozan of the Toronto Raptors as well as rookies Michael Carter-Williams of the 76ers and Orlandos Victor Oladipo.dddddddddddd The West will be represented by Lillard and Utah Jazz first-year player Trey Burke and the tandem of Goran Dragic of the Phoenix Suns and Reggie Jackson of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The 3-Point Shootout remained largely untouched, although the East v. West format remains intact. The player from the Eastern Conference with the most points will meet the player from the Western Conference with the most points. However, there is one new wrinkle this year. Each player can make one of the five locations to a full rack of five money balls, each worth two points. Defending champion Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers anchors the East team of Orlandos Arron Afflalo, Washingtons Bradley Beal and Joe Johnson of the Brooklyn Nets. Curry and Lillard are on the West team alongside All-Star starter Kevin Love, who won the title in 2012, and San Antonio Spur Marco Belinelli. And now, its time for the main event. This years edition of the Slam-Dunk contest will see many changes, first of which is a Freestyle Round. Lets let the NBA explain: "In a significant first in the events history, the competition will tip off with a Freestyle Round where the dunkers for each conference will have 90 seconds to showcase as many dunks as they want. At the conclusion of the Freestyle Round, the panel of judges will then choose a winner by voting East or West. The winning conference will earn the advantage of deciding whether its dunkers will dunk first or second in the head-to-head battles that take place in the Battle Round." The Battle Round? "The Battle Round will feature head-to-head matchups pitting East dunkers vs. West dunkers, with the judges choosing a winner for each battle. Upon losing a head-to-head battle, that dunker is then eliminated from the competition. The first team to win three battles will win the competition and be crowned 2014 Sprite Slam Dunk champions." No individual champion? "At the conclusion of the team competition, fans will then have the opportunity to vote for the player of their choice as the Sprite Slam Dunker of the Night through SMS, Twitter, NBA.com and the NBA GameTime app." For the first time since 1988, there will be three All-Stars in the Slam-Dunk Contest. George and John Wall of the Washington Wizards team with defending champion Terrence Ross of the Toronto Raptors, and out West, Lillard, Golden States Harrison Barnes and Sacramentos Ben McLemore round out the team. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Slugger Jose Abreu, All-Star left-hander Chris Sale and closer Matt Lindstrom are on the disabled list. But the Chicago White Sox are still finding ways to win. Adam Dunn hit a three-run homer and the White Sox defeated the Kansas City Royals 7-6 on Tuesday night. "Any time you can expand a lead I think that those are a lot more meaningful," Dunn said. The White Sox needed those extra runs as the Royals answered with three in the eighth and one in the ninth. "Six runs were not enough," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "The eighth inning put a damper on it. We were trying to keep the score at two runs. "This is a club you go up and down their lineup, you make a mistake and those guys are going to hit it a long way. I guess you call it we caught a break, but it hasnt helped us any missing (Jose) Abreu. Hes got a ton of power, too." Abreu leads the majors with 15 homers, but Dunn and Paul Konerko have hit three-run homers in the first two games of this series. "Obviously, hes really good," Dunn said of Abreu. "I think Paul and I hopefully can put some runs on the board." The White Sox out-homered the Royals 5-0 in winning the first two games of this series. "Theyve got a lot of power," Royals designated hitter Billy Butler said. "They live and die by the long ball. They hit a lot of home runs and when they dont, they usually lose." Andre Rienzo (4-0) limited the Royals to two runs and five hits over six innings. He struck out a career-high eight. "He had some really good stuff today," Dunn said. "Hes kept us in pretty much every ball game. ... When he has three or four pitches working like he did tonight, hes tough." Ronald Belisario gave up a run in the ninth, he stranded the tying run at second base to pick up his first save of the season. The Royals record dropped to 5-15 against American League Central opponents. Gordon Beckham and Conor Gillaspie, who each had three hits, singled before Dunn homered in the eighth off right-hander Aaron Crow, who had allowed two three-run homers in his past two appearances. Beckham has hit safely in 13 of his past 15 games, while Gillaspie increased his average to .347. Royals rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura (2-4) took the loss, allowing four runs and seven hits, including a Tyler Flowers home run, in six innings. Ventura threw three wild pitches in the White Sox three-run fifth, the last one allowing Beckham to score. Danny Valencia doubled home Butler and Alex Gordon with the first two Kansas City runs in the second. White Sox relievers Scott Downs and Frank Francisco combined to retire only one of the six batters they faced in the eighth as the Royals scored three runs. Gordon and Cain had RBIs, while Cain scored on a Francisco wild pitch. Zach Putnam restored order by retiring pinch hitter Mike Moustakas on an infield popup and Nori Aoki on a ground ball that shortstop Alexei Ramirez made a diving stop with runners on the corners. Belisario, who threw 21 pitches in two innings Monday, allowed a two-out single to Gordon, scoring Butler, who had doubled. Jarrod Dyson ran for Gordon and stole second. Belisario struck out Cain on three pitches to end the game. "Its the same," Belisario said of setting up or closing. "Its the same going in. I do my job. I feel the same." Notes: Sale felt fine after a bullpen session Tuesday and could come off the disabled list this weekend to start against the New York Yankees. ... Royals All-Star C Salvador Perez is sidelined with inflammation in his right thumb. The Royals are hopeful Perez could return Saturday, avoiding a trip to the disabled list. They did recall C Francisco Pena, the son of Yankees bench coach and former Royals manager Tony Pena, from Triple-A Omaha. Pena made his major league debut, catching in the ninth. ... The Royals optioned IF Johnny Giavotella to Omaha. ... Lindstrom, who injured his left ankle trying to field a bunt in the ninth inning, was placed on the 15-day disabled list. The White Sox purchased the contract of RHP Javy Guerra, who had 21 saves for the Dodgers as a rookie in 2011, from Triple-A Charlotte. John Kelly Jersey . ODriscoll was picked for his 129th test in an Ireland jersey on Friday, but he wont continue his world record midfield partnership with Gordon DArcy. DArcy was laid low by a stomach bug at the start of the week and has recovered, but Luke Marshall edged him in training and will start.
