LONDON -- With David Beckham watching in the stands at West Ham, Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney replicated one of the retired stars most memorable goals on Saturday. Setting United on its way to a 2-0 victory, Rooney sent the ball high from inside the halfway line over goalkeeper Adrian after just seven minutes. "Its just instinct, Ive turned and had a quick look and seen the goalkeeper off his line," Rooney said. "Its one of those Ive tried many times and thankfully today its gone in." Just as it did on the opening day of the 1996-97 season for Beckham, who lobbed Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan from the halfway line. "Waynes technical ability, his awareness to know where the goalkeeper was, was amazing in the build-up, and then to actually execute it was superb," United manager David Moyes said. "My only worry was whether the bounce would take it over the bar or not." Moyes was actually more pleased with the second after the wonder goal. Rooney was primed in front of goal to slot in from close range in the 33rd after Mark Noble failed to fully clear Ashley Youngs low cross. "He was getting in the box and leading the line," Moyes said of Rooney. Rooneys first double in almost four months moved him to third on Uniteds all-time scoring chart, 38 behind Bobby Charltons record 249. The striker, who signed a new deal through June 2019 last month, thrived at Upton Park in the absence of Robin van Persie, who is beginning at least a month out with a left knee injury. Moyes almost had to cope with a makeshift defence as United reeled off a third consecutive away win in the league without conceding, days after advancing to a Champions League quarterfinal with Bayern Munich by beating Olympiakos. However rare this comfortable league win was for Moyes seventh-place side, reaching the top four seems beyond this team, with Arsenal 11 points in front in fourth place. "The win on Wednesday night against Olympiakos has given us all a big lift," Rooney said. "You could see today the confidence running through the team, so its a good victory and were really pleased with that." 16:22ET 22-03-14 Natrell Jamerson Saints Jersey . 5 Trade Deadline is drawing closer and teams will be deciding on whether to buy or sell. MINSK, Belarus -- Defending champion Sweden blanked the Czech Republic 3-0 Sunday to earn the bronze at the ice hockey world championship. Joakim Lindstrom scored early and Simon Hjalmarsson netted another one in the opening period for Sweden to take control. Mikael Backlund rounded off the win with a wrist shot past goaltender Alexander Salak in the third. "We came here to win the gold," Lindstrom said. "That was our goal. But the competition is very, very hard, and all in all it was a pretty good tournament for us." Sweden had to settle for the third-place game after a 3-1 loss to Russia in the semifinals. The Czechs outshot Sweden 29-24 but failed to score for the second straight match after Finland blanked them 3-0 in Saturdays semis. Goaltender Anders Nilsson saved all 24 shots for the shutout.dddddddddddd "Hes been phenomenal, not just tonight, but the whole tournament," Lindstrom said. "From game one, hes been our backbone on this hockey team." The Czechs -- the 2010 champions -- struggled in the preliminary round, recording three losses before recovering to eliminate the United States in the quarterfinals. Veteran forward Jaromir Jagr said after the game it was his last with the national team -- although he will continue playing for his New Jersey Devils next season. "Its not that I would think Im not good enough for it," Jagr said. "But this is a different hockey than I play. My hockey doesnt fit this style." NEW YORK -- While growing up in New Rochelle, N.Y., Kevin Shattenkirk watched Rangers defenceman Brian Leetch score many big goals. Given a chance to do the same at Madison Square Garden, the St. Louis Blues blue-liner made the most of his opportunity. Shattenkirk fired in the tiebreaking power-play goal early in the third period, and the Blues got the best of New York again in a 2-1 victory Thursday night. "There were a lot of emotions going through my body, but after the first couple of shifts it just felt like a hockey game again," Shattenkirk said. "Once the goal happened, even more of a relief. I was happy and you could hear some people cheering." Shattenkirk had his own rooting section. He secured 20 tickets himself, but estimated that 60 or 70 people he knows got tickets on their own to watch him play. He could hear them when he one-timed a pass from Alex Pietrangelo through a screen and past goalie Henrik Lundqvist -- a la Leetch -- at 3:09 for his eighth goal of the season. "There are a lot of things that I watched in him growing up, and he was a very special player. I try to emulate him as best as I can," Shattenkirk said. "Those were areas that he always shined in." Alexander Steen also had a goal for the Blues before leaving late in the second period with a lower-body injury. David Backes had two assists, and Jaroslav Halak made 34 saves in beating Lundqvist in a matchup of Olympic goalies. New Yorks Rick Nash scored his sixth goal in four games -- netting at least one in each -- but Shattenkirk took advantage of Nashs slashing penalty, scoring 9 seconds into the power play. Lundqvist made 23 saves in his return from a one-game absence caused by the flu. He allowed fewer than three goals for the seventh straight game, but still couldnt find a way to stop the Blues -- the only NHL team he has never beaten (0-4). "I was moving the way I wanted to," Lundqvist said. "I am happy with the way I played, but its still very disappointing to not come out of here with at least one point." St. Louis, which killed all three Rangers power plays, swept the two-game season series and has won seven of the past eight meetings. The Blues, beaten 7-1 at New Jersey on Tuesday, have earned points in eight straight visits to Madison Square Garden. This was their first since Nov. 7, 2010. "Its shameful that we havent been here more often," Backes said. "You see the crowd, youre in the city for a day or two, you feel that hype, and you know what playing the New York Rangers brings. I think it brought the best out of us." The Rangers got even late in the second on Nashs team-leading 17th goal. Derek Stepan sent a pass from behind the net to Nash, who stepped into a slap shot from the dot in the left circle and ripped a drive past Halak with 1:43 left. New York pressured the Blues for the remainder of the period and drew its second power play in the closing seconds. "We had a couple good looks," Rangers captain Ryan Callahan said, "a couple Grade-A chances there right in front. We just didnt get one past them there." The Rangers outshot the Blues 28-18 through 40 minutes. "Theyre a team that if we wouldve taken off the gas for 60 seconds, it couldve been 3-2 the other way in a heartbeat," Backes said. Steen gave the Blues a 1-0 lead with his 26th goal. A pass from Jaden Schwartz hit Steens right skate in front of the crease, caromed off Lundqvists stick and skate and trickled in at 8:38. The goal was briefly reviewed by video replay, and it was determined that the puck wasnt kicked into the net. It was the fifth straight goal allowed by the Rangers since they had a 3-1 lead over the Islanders in the second period on Tuesday in a 5-3 loss. A late power-play goal was the winner in that one, too. Steen struggled to get to the bench after going hard into the boards in the second, but he was back soon after on the power play. He skated off for good with 2:57 left in the period. Blues coach Ken Hitchcock said Steen is day to day. NOTES: Nash has 21 goals and 40 points in 50 games versus the Blues. ... Steen has 14 career points against the Rangers and 12 in the past seven games -- including six goals. ... Schwartz played in his 100th NHL game. ... Toronto is 2-5 in its last seven home games with the White Sox and goes with lefty J.A. Happ to start the series opener. Hes lasted fewer than five innings in two of his last three starts, including a four-inning outing against Cincinnati on Saturday in which he was touched for eight runs and walked four. "The walks - thats terrible," Happ said. "Thats obviously frustrating. Of course Im not happy about that, and I need to do better." He was 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA in two meetings with Chicago in 2013. The Blue Jays were denied a series sweep on Wednesday versus New York, as Mark Teixeira homered and drove in three runs to power the Yankees to a 5-3 victory. Jose Reyes finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while Melky Cabrera ended 2- for-4 with a two-run single for the AL East-leading Blue Jays. Drew Hutchison (5-6) was handed the loss after permitting four runs in six innings. Chicago was two outs from a victory over Baltimore on Monday before a three- run walk-off home run yielded a 6-4 loss.dddddddddddd. Two days later, the White Sox led by four runs with two outs in the eighth before a game-tying grand slam ultimately turned into a 5-4 loss to the Orioles. Six losses in seven games overall have dropped them into last in the American Leagues Central Division. "The baseball gods must be upset with us in some way, shape, or form," Adam Eaton said. "They kind of had it out for us." Rookie right-hander Scott Carroll begins a second run in the starting rotation against the Blue Jays after going 1-3 with a 6.15 earned run average in the initial stint. He was sent to the bullpen after those five starts and hasnt begun a game since May 19. He posted a 1.83 ERA in six relief outings and was brought back to starting to replace Andre Rienzo. He has never faced the Blue Jays. Carroll could sidestep a meeting with Toronto slugger Jose Bautista, whos been hampered by left hamstring issues. Bautista leads the AL in on-base percentage. • (SportsNetwork.com) - Fans of the ground attack should be in for a treat Sunday in the Emerald City, as the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks welcome DeMarco Murray and the Dallas Cowboys to CenturyLink Field. Murray leads the NFL with 670 yards and is averaging a league-best 134.0 yards per game with 5.2 yards per carry. He will go up against Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch, who is sixth in the NFL with 306 yards (76.5 ypg). Murray has posted five 100-yard games to start the season for the 4-1 Cowboys and has five rushing scores. He is trying to become the first Dallas running back to lead the league in rushing since Emmitt Smith in 1995 (1,773 yards). Smith, of course, surpassed Walter Payton to become the NFLs all-time leading rusher against the Seahawks back in 2002 (18,355). In Sundays 20-17 overtime win over the Houston Texans, Murray carried the ball 31 times for 136 yards and was kept out of the end zone. He joined Jim Brown (6) and O.J. Simpson (5) as the only players to run for 100 yards or more in at least five games to start a season. Those are pioneers at the running back position, Murray said. You know they did a lot of great things for the position and for the NFL. A lot of respect for those guys. Murray, the NFC Offensive Player of the Month for September, is gaining more respect and has been able to start off strong as evidenced by his 177 yards in the first quarter. The Cowboys are 15-1 when Murray carries the ball 20 or more times and will face a Seattle defense ranked No. 1 against the run, allowing just a mere 62.2 yards per game. It will be a huge test for Murray and the Cowboys, who are second in the NFL in rushing with 160.0 yards per game. Guess whos first? Thats right, the Seahawks lead the league with 167.2 rushing yards a week. Murray has 183 yards rushing in two games against Seattle and ran for 139 yards on 22 carries in a 23-13 win versus the Seahawks on Nov. 6, 2011. The Seahawks returned the favor with a 27-7 victory over the Cowboys on Sept. 16, 2012, when Lynch racked up 122 yards and a score on 26 touches. Lynch has accumulated 257 yards and two TDs in the last two meetings with Dallas, which had a three-game winning streak in this series stopped in that 2012 loss. The Cowboys hold a 9-5 edge in the regular season against Seattle, but havent won in the Pacific Northwest since Dec. 6, 2004, losing three straight trips there. Seattle beat Dallas in the Wild Card Playoffs on Jan. 6, 2007. Dallas comes into Sundays matchup on a roll with four straight wins after a Week 1 loss to San Francisco. Quarterback Tony Romo likes where his team is at, but knows its a long season. Your record is what it is, Romo said. You want to put yourself in the best position at the end of the year. Being 4-1 is great but we have a long way to go. Romo will tie Hall of Famer Roger Staubach (114) for the most games started by a Cowboys QB, while HOF QB Troy Aikman is first with 165 starts. Romo has won three of his four starts against the Seahawks and helped Dallas rack up 456 yards over the Texans, passing for 324 with two TDs and an interception. The Cowboys, who are fifth in the NFL in total yards (398.2), have won three in a row on the road and remain tied with the Philadelphia Eagles for first in the NFC East. The New York Giants are right behind with a 3-2 record and will visit south Philly Sunday night. The Seahawks will try to slow down the Cowboys reborn offense, especially Murray. Linebacker Bobby Wagner leads the team in tackles with 43 and posted eight in Monday nights 27-17 victory in Washington. Wagner also had a sack and two passes defensed, and is looking forward to Sundays meeting with Murray and the Cowboys. Wagner is riding a streak of 15 consecutive games with at least eight tackles, including the playoffs. Im looking forward to it, Wagner said. Hes trying to lead the league in rushing and Im trying to lead the league in tackles. So, Im looking forward to the challenge. Wagners confidence should bode well for the Seahawks. They were able to hold Redskins running back Alfred Morris to just 29 yards on 13 carries, but their pass defense was exposed a bit. DeSean Jackson had 157 yards and a touchdown on five catches and burned the Seattle secondary for a 60-yard TD and a 57- yard reception. The Seahawks are 22nd against the pass, allowing 255.5 ypg. Seattle will be in for a long afternoon if it cant get to Romo because Dez Bryant, Terrance Williams and Jason Witten are three formidable receivers. Bryant had 85 yards and a touchdown against the Texans and Williams ended with 71 yards and a score. Seattles Legion of Boom could be in trouble with a three-headed monster paying a visit. Terrance really has become a good receiver for us, Romo said. Hes starting to come into his own. Ive always had confidence in his ability. I think youre seeing him understand things even better and hes gotten better every day. Williams has four TD catches in the last three games and Bryant has a touchdown reception in each of his previous four contests. Witten eclipsed the 10,000 receiving mark and needs two more catches for 900. He will join future Hall of Famer Tony Gonzalez as the only tight ends with 900 receptions. Sherman and strong safety Kam Chancellor were burned by Jackson on his long TD catch Monday night. The defense must tighten up this week by forcing Romo to beat them on his own because it will be tough sledding for Murray and the run game. Its a great challenge for us. Obviously, theyre world champs and they play great at their stadium and have for a few years now, Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said. It starts with how good of a football team they are. Theyre a really, really good team. They didnt win the Super Bowl last year by accident. WHAT TO WATCH FOR The Dallas defense is almost the exact opposite of Seattles in which it allows more than 100 yards (122.0) per game. The Cowboys have allowed more than 100 yards four times in five games this season, and were gashed by Houston, which racked up 176 rushing yards. Texans running back Arian Foster ripped off 157 yards and two scores on 23 carries in a losing effort. Maybe activating safety Jakar Hamilton (suspension) will help in the box if the Cowboys put him in. Hamilton was suspended the first four games because he violated the leagues substance abuse policy. Just trying to contribute in any way that I can, Hamilton said. I dont care if Ive got to pass out water, you know what Im saying? But it feels great to be back with my teammates and coaches. The Cowboys face the top-rated rushing offense this week and have the luxury of trying to stop both Lynch and Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson. Wilson ran for a career-high 122 yards against the Redskins, while Lynch added 72. Wilson also passed for 201 yards with two touchdowns and faces a Dallas defense that is 18th against the pass (247.8) and 21st in total yards (369.8). Russell had a phenomenal game, Seattle head coach Peter Carroll said. He was everywhere. He did everything we could have asked of him. Dallas will try to limit Wilsons scrambling ability. Wilson and the Seahawks are only 30th in passing with just 201.0 yards per game and generally hitch their wagon to Lynchs legs. But they proved both Wilson and Lynch, and some defensive help, are enough to succeed. Wilson is 19-1 at home, including the playoffs, with 36 TD passes and eight INTs. He has a solid surrounding cast in receivers Percy Harvin, Jermaine Kearse and Doug Baldwin. All three wideouts and Lynch have more than 100 yards receiving. Lynch leads Seattle with three receiving TDs to go along with three rushing. OVERALL ANALYSIS The Seahawks were a bit shaky in DC on Monday night and allowed the Redskins to creep back into the game. Now they face a more balanced and potent Cowboys team that is trying to establish itself as one of the leagues best. Romo is anxious to see how his team stacks up with the Seahawks. I think weve seen plenty of times that one game isnt going to define your season at this point. However, there are very important games and you know this game is a game that is a great test for us. Romo said. Its going to be good to see our team come out with great energy and great enthusiasm and really see how we stack up. Sundays matchup between Seattle and Dallas will be competitive, and features two of the best running backs and quarterbacks in the NFL. The Seahawks have the edge simply because of homefield advantage, but the Cowboys will fight to the finish and stay atop the NFC East because Philadelphia will have its hands full with New York in the evening. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals gave manager Mike Matheny a three-year contract extension through 2017 on Wednesday, rewarding him for deep post-season runs in his first two seasons in the job. The team also said that 2005 NL Cy Young Award winner Chris Carpenter is retiring after missing this season with a recurring nerve issue in his shoulder. Matheny led the Cardinals to the World Series this year, losing in six games to Boston. In 2012, his first season managing at any level, St. Louis fell one game shy of reaching the Fall Classic. The 43-year-old Matheny was a four-time Gold Glove catcher with St. Louis and had one year left on his deal. "We didnt want any distractions, we knew we wanted Mike to be a part of this organization for a long time," general manager John Mozeliak said Wednesday. "So we might as well deal with it and get it behind us. "Obviously, with the success hes had he deserves this contract," Mozeliak added. Chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. characterized Mathenys first two seasons as "pretty historic." Matheny called it an "amazing ride." Mathenys managed 30 post-season games the last two seasons and is among eight managers in major league history to lead a team to the post-season his first two full seasons. The Cardinals picked up Mathenys option for 2014 in February. "You look at how everythings kind of unfolded and you just never know," the manager added. "Opportunities come up and fortunately Ive been surrounded by some very, very good people." Mozeliak said the team hoped to "identify a future role" in the organization for the 38-year-old Carpenter. "When you think back to everything this organization has been through in regard to his ups and downs, he will still go down as one of the greatest weve ever had," Mozeliak said. Carpenter went 95-44 with a 3.07 ERA in nine seasons in St. Loouis despite making only seven starts combined between 2007-08 and 2012.dddddddddddd His began his career in 1997 with Toronto, signing with the Cardinals after the 2002 season. He missed all of 2003 with an injury and was 144-94 overall. "We think back to his career and what an amazing one it was," Mozeliak said. "He was part of so many highlights and I think he really created a culture of higher expectations." Carpenter won 21 games in 2005 and led the league in ERA in 2009, the same year he was named the NL comeback player of the year -- after having Tommy John surgery. Hes the franchise career leader with 10 postseason victories, the most memorable is his 1-0 win over the Phillies and Roy Halladay in Game 5 of the NL division series in 2011. "Chris will always be remembered as the leader of the pitching staff during one of the great eras of Cardinals baseball," DeWitt said. The Cardinals also purchased the contract of outfielders Oscar Taveras and Mike ONeill, and infielder Greg Garcia. St. Louis has 36 players on the 40-man roster. Taveras is the franchises top prospect and is coming off right ankle surgery after batting .306 in just 46 games at Triple-A Memphis. ONeill hit .320 in 98 games at Double-A Springfield and finished the year at Memphis where he batted .295, and the versatile Garcia batted .271 at Memphis and played second base, third base and shortstop. The Cardinals took left-hander John Gast, outfielder Jermaine Curtis and shortstop Ryan Jackson off the 40-man roster. Gast and Curtis were outrighted to Memphis and Jackson was claimed by the Houston Astros. Mozeliak called it a roster "clean up" prior to the winter Rule 5 draft. Crawford wobbled Gamboa with a left and knocked him down with another left earlier in the ninth, then connected with a right to the chin at the 2:53 mark, prompting referee Gino Rodriguez to call the fight. As Rodriguez waved his arms, Crawford ran to a neutral corner and jumped on the shoulders of co-manager Brian McIntyre. "I hurt him plenty of times," Crawford said, "so when I hurt him the last time, I was looking to finish." The 26-year-old Crawford (24-0, 17 knockouts) was fighting in his hometown for the first time as a professional, and more than 10,000 showed up at the CenturyLink Center, many of them chanting "Craw-ford! PHOENIX -- Add a dramatic ninth-inning moment to whats looking more and more like a breakout season for A.J. Pollock. The young centre fielder, in his second full big league season, hit a two-out, two-run homer on the first pitch he saw in the ninth to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 7-5 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday night. "We were standing there and we were saying Lets walk them off, lets walk them off," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said, "and he crushed the ball." It was the first game-ending homer of Pollocks career. "A really cool feeling," Pollock said. "Thats what you do. You come in here every day and put a lot of swings in the cages and you work hard and its really cool when you actually get up there when the team needs you in late innings and be able to win a game." Pollock, hitless in his first 13 at-bats this season, went 3 for 5 to bring his season average to .296. In his last 26 games, Pollock is batting .341 (31 for 91) with five doubles, four homers and 11 RBIs. "Hes just super-talented," teammate Cody Ross said. "Hes got all the tools to be a great player and you can see that hes getting comfortable." With their fifth loss in seven games, the Padres are just 2 1/2 games ahead of last-place Arizona in the NL West. Cliff Pennington was hit by a pitch and pinch-hitter Eric Chavez hit into a fielders choice ahead of Pollocks soaring homer to centre off Kevin Quackenbush (0-1). Pollock said the pitch "was probably a little out of the zone, but I just wanted to be aggressive." Yonder Alonso homered and Everth Cabrera launched a three-run shot off Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy in the fifth inning to give San Diego a 4-2 lead. Martin Prado doubled in a run and singled for the Diamondbacks, just back from a 2-4 road trip and opening a seven-game home stand. Brad Ziegler (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. "Great game, no doubt about that," Padres manager Bud Black said. "High intensity on both ends. We got back in the game after two nothing with a big inning. They bounced back, we bounced back with a home run. ... They got the last at-bat and put a good swing on a high fastball. " The Diamondbacks went up 2-0 in the second when Prado singled softly up the middle and Ross reached on a bloop hit to short right. With two outs, Pennington singled off third baseman Chase Headleys glove to bring in one run, and another scored when centre fielder Alexi Amarista didnt pick up the ball cleanly. McCarthy blanked the Padres through four, but just after the Chase Field roof opened Alonso hit the first pitch of the fifth inning into the swimming pool area in right. After two outs, Amarista and Tyson Ross singled, and Cabrera homered just inside the right field foul pole. Ross, San Diegos starter, couldnt hold the lead, facing five batters without an out in Arizonas three-run sixth. Pollock singled, then Gerardo Parra reached on a bunt. Paul Goldschmidt singled in a run, Miguel Montero singled home another and Prado barely missed a home run with a double into the cranny next to the Arizona bullpen, putting the Diamondbacks ahead 5-4 and ending Ross night. The lead didnt last long. McCarthy retired the first two in the seventh but was yanked after pinch-hitter Tommy Medica doubled. Lefty Joe Thatcher came on and allowed an RBI double to Cabrera and it was 5-5. Each manager challenged a call and both were rejected. Black challenged a call in the fourth when Seth Smith tried to stretch a double to a triple and was called out on an extremely close play. Gibson challenged a safe call on an attempted pickoff of Headley in the eighth. With two outs in the eighth Jedd Gyorko singled and was easily thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. The dust-up brought the cheering crowd at the Air Canada Centre to its feet and earned both players matching technical fouls. But even more, said Salmons, it said everything about this Toronto Raptors team. Theyre not afraid of anyone. Terrence Ross led the way with 24 points as the short-handed Raptors slayed another significant foe, defeating the Indiana Pacers 102-94. "Were not going to back down from anybody, were not going to quit, were going to be there, were going to fight," Salmons said. "Our leader (Kyle Lowry) hasnt been playing the last two games, but were still fighting. . . Were definitely not going to back down, were going to continue to fight." Jonas Valanciunas added 22 points and nine rebounds, while DeMar DeRozan scored 20 points and doled out nine assists for the Raptors (44-32), who claimed their fifth win in six starts despite missing starters Lowry and Amir Johnson. "We feel like we can beat anybody when we step out there on the court," said DeRozan. "Theyre a top team in the east, and thats a team that were fighting to be in their position. Tonight was a big game at this time of the season." Greivis Vasquez and Nando De Colo had 10 points apiece, while Patrick Patterson, who started in place of Johnson in only his third game since missing 11 with an elbow injury, had seven boards. Paul George had 26 points to top the Pacers (53-24), while David West added 21. "This is a playoff team," George said of Toronto. "Down the stretch they just got a lot of bounces that created second shots for them. If you give a playoff team another look or an opportunity they are going to knock you down." There was a definite post-season vibe to the Eastern Conference battle between two teams that could potentially meet in the second round of the playoffs. The Pacers had led the East all season until a recent slide saw them fall below the Miami Heat on percentage points. The playoff-bound Raptors are third in the conference. "Were a scrappy team, a scrappy grind-it-out team, so if one player goes down, we have other players that can come in, help us off the bench, give us that same spark," Ross said. "Thats how weve been winning games." It was see-saw battle for the first half before the Raptors cobbled together an 11-point lead in the third quarter, but it was short-lived as Indiana outscored Toronto 22-11 to send the game into the fourth tied 75-75. The Pacers went on a quick 7-0 run midway through the quarter to take a three-point lead, but the resilient Raptors responded with a run of their own, and when Valanciunas grabbed his own rebound and finished with a lovely hook shot, it put Toronto up 96-94 with three minutes to play. Valanciunas would score the next basket to mmake it a four-point lead, and the Raptors held fast on the defensive end the rest of the way, to the delight of the fans at Air Canada Centre, who were on their feet for the final few minutes.dddddddddddd When DeRozan stepped to the line to calmly drain two free throws with 13 seconds left, the crowd chanted "M-V-P!" It was the second straight game without Lowry, who has a bruised kneecap, and Johnson -- although Johnson did play three minutes in Wednesdays 107-103 win over Houston before leaving the game. Dressed smartly in a charcoal suit, Lowry could have been mistaken for one of the coaches and he hollered at teammates and gave instructions from the bench. "Id rather see Kyle in uniform than in street clothes and coaching. I told Kyle this all the time, that when he becomes a coach, I cannot wait to come watch his teams play," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said, laughing. "Im going to be that heckler in the stands Boo coach!" DeRozan added dryly: "(The coaching) was a little bit worse than he does when hes in the game with you, because he doesnt stop talking." The Raptors have six games to go in their quest for the Atlantic Division title, and their battle for a favourable opponent in the post-season. Theyre also on pace for their best regular-season record ever. Their most wins in a season is 47, set in 2000-01 and 2006-07. The good news: Indiana was the Raptors last opponent with a plus-.500 record. And of their remaining opponents, they play Milwaukee -- the leagues worst team -- twice, and Philadelphia (second worst) once. "(The division title) is important, (but) its not worth jeopardizing someones health," Casey said. "Weve got players who are nicked up, banged up, weve got to make sure theyre healthy and we cant run them into the ground at the sake of trying to win now." The Pacers have been struggling, losing three straight and five of six before a win over Detroit on Wednesday. Still, Casey wasnt about to take anything away from the Raptors win. "Its a win. Its a W. Whatever the deal is (with the Pacers), theyve won 53 games, thats the way I look at it," Casey said. "Its a quality win." Ross shot 4-for-4 for 10 points in an opening quarter that saw 10 lead changes and neither team lead by more than four. The Pacers took a 28-27 advantage into the second. The back-and-forth battle continued into the second before the Raptors took control with a 15-5 run, capped by a Valanciunas layup, to send Toronto into the dressing room with a 54-46 halftime lead. A three-point play by Valanciunas gave the Raptors their biggest lead of the game -- 11 points -- midway through the third, but Indiana buckled down on defence and it was all tied up with 12 minutes to play. Kings. Time and time again in these playoffs, theyve stared adversity dead in the eye and come out on top. So when Justin Williams, holder of two Cups himself, looked around the dressing room at his teammates after 40 minutes of Game 2 – his team trailing by two goals for the fourth time in three games – he saw not doubt or fear of the Rangers snatching momentum of the 2014 Final, but belief - cold, hard belief. “Were not a team that wilts under the pressure,” said Williams, owner of 23 points in the playoffs. “Were a team that goes out and wants to make a difference and gets it. I feel thats a big reason why weve made it so far.” Three grueling series this spring, all stretched to the max opposite the very best the West had to offer, each dotted with varying threats to a second Cup in three years. But at every point along the way these Kings have found a little something extra – another gear, another goal, another save – unwavering in their ability to overcome a challenge, however tall or insurmountable it may seem. “Every series, every game, every year you play in the league you go through experiences that ultimately will help you in certain situations and I feel together as a team weve been through almost all them you could imagine and weve pulled through,” said Williams, who boasts 949 career NHL games, including 112 in the postseason. “So when were down do we feel comfortable? No, we dont feel comfortable, but we feel like were able to come back. “Belief is a very underrated attribute and we have that going on within our team right now.” It was another 2-0 pit at Staples Center on Saturday evening – the third such hole in as many games – just another obstacle for the Western Conference champs. But in familiar fashion (they did it against the Sharks, Ducks and Hawks) the silver and black forced their way back into the fold, ultimately dashing the Rangers hopes yet again in (double) overtime. Remarkably, the Kings have yet to lead at any point in regulation in the Final and still boast a commanding 2-0 series lead. “We find ourselves in the same situation regurgitating the same mumbo jumbo everry time, but were in a results oriented league and the results are were up 2-0,” said Williams.dddddddddddd “I dont care how we got here.” Another Cup, thus, appears close at hand for the 32-year-old and an always plucky bunch from southern California. Forty-eight teams have taken a 2-0 series lead in the Final since 1939 with all but five going on to capture the games top prize, including L.A. in 2012. But for whatever history might say the Kings know full well that theres plenty of game left, their own checkered track record in these playoffs the best proof of that. It was L.A. on the mat and apparently down for the count in round one against the Sharks – they rallied with four straight wins – and then seemingly in control against the Ducks in round two – they were up 2-0 in the series before losing three straight – before another dose of Game 7 magic was required. “Obviously momentums a huge part of playoff hockey and once a team has it its important to try to switch the tide in your favour as quick as possible,” said Dwight King from the teams hotel, sitting directly across from Central Park, his controversial third period goal timely in the 5-4 victory. “Teams dont make it this far out of luck,” Williams added. “Do we feel weve broken them? No, absolutely not. We should know that more than anybody; that its tough to put a team down. Especially when youre playing for the Stanley Cup its going to be hard to put a team down, but we need to try to step a little bit more on the throat tomorrow.” Finding their way to the borough of Manhattan on Sunday afternoon (after an early cross-country flight), the city buzzing with a flurry excitement at the Rangers first appearance in the Final in 20 years, the Kings exuded a quiet, knowing confidence, mindful of the improved start theyll need at MSG on Monday night and yet self-assured in their ability to handle whatever challenges Game 3 might throw their way. Williams knew what he saw of his teammates in that dressing room just a day earlier – “I saw a prepared team that knew what they had to do” – and he knows as well as anyone that more, much more will be needed in the days ahead. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Canadas Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points, Wayne Selden Jr. had 14 and No. 10 Kansas pulled away in the final seconds of overtime for a 77-70 victory over Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. Naadir Tharpe made four foul shots in the extra session to seal the victory for the top-seeded Jayhawks (24-8), who will face fourth-seeded Iowa State in Friday nights semifinals. The No. 16 Cyclones, behind a big game from Melvin Ejim, beat No. 5 seed Kansas State 91-85. Phil Forte briefly gave the Cowboys a 70-68 lead with a 3-pointer a minute into overtime, but the Jayhawks scored the final seven points, all but two of them coming at the foul line. LeBryan Nash scored 19 points to lead the Cowboys (21-12). Forte added 16 points and Marcus Smart finished with 14, though he missed all three of his shots in the extra session. Both teams had chances to earn the win in regulation. Wiggins, from Vaughan, Ont., hit a baseline jumper with a minute left to knot it 67, but Cowboys coach Travis Ford decided against going 2-for-1 on possessions, and Smart missed a 3 with 32 seconds left. The Jayhawks got the rebound and called timeout with 16 seconds left to set up a play for Wiggins, and he missed a tightly guarded 3 with a few ticks left on the lock. Tarik Black gathered in the rebound and stuck it back, but the basket came after time had expired. Black got extended minutes in place of Joel Embiid, the Jayhawks 7-foot freshman centre, who has been ruled out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his back. The senior transfer finished with seven ppoints and 12 rebounds, including a couple with the game in the balance.dddddddddddd The Cowboys, who had to play a matinee after dispatching Texas Tech on Wednesday night, didnt look as if they were weary in the first half. They actually pulled out to an early lead, silencing a heavily pro-Kansas crowd that had packed inside the Sprint Center. Kansas responded by taking a 32-23 lead into halftime, and then maintained its advantage early in the second half. But once Black and fellow forward Perry Ellis picked up their fourth fouls, the Cowboys started shredding the Kansas defence by driving the lane. Smart proved to be the most adept at it, picking up fouls when he wasnt hammered on the way to the rim. But just about everyone wearing black and orange got into the act, and Oklahoma State methodically trimmed the lead to 55-49 with about 8 minutes to go. Thats when Cowboys coach Travis Ford changed things up by slapping on a full-court press. It produced two quick turnovers and helped Oklahoma State take a 60-59 lead with 4 minutes left. It was the Cowboys first lead since the 12-minute mark in the first half. The two teams, who each won on their home floor during the regular season, traded blows down the stretch. Selden made a couple free throws for Kansas, Forte answered with two from the foul line for Oklahoma State. Black and Wiggins threw down alley-oop dunks for the Jayhawks, and Murphy hit a pair of free throws and Markel Brown hit a rainbow 3 to give the Cowboys the lead. In his first official practice round at Augusta National, Graham DeLaet got in a great cram session, playing 18 holes alongside Mike Weir. As they walked off the first tee, Weir opened his book of course knowledge to his fellow Canadian, telling him to ask him about anything and everything. For the next four hours, the two talked about the humps and bumps and hills and swales of the famed course, with DeLaet trying to drink in as much information as he could ahead of Thursdays opening round. "It was nice to have Mike kind of showing me around," said DeLaet. "He was giving me guidance on a few things that other players had given him, guys like Jack (Nicklaus) and Freddy (Couples) and stuff along the way. Thats one of the cool things out here that guys kind of pass things along. You go to a regular tournament and guys kind of keep things secretive. But for whatever reason, out here you just kind of pass the torch along. Any time I asked, he was more than happy to point out a few things along the way I wouldnt have known about." And few people know the course better than Mike Weir, who is making his 15th start here this week. However, the 2003 champion cautioned DeLaet that many of his references were specific for his game, not the long-bombing power style that the Weyburn, Sask., native plays. "I wasnt overloading him because our games are so different," said Weir, who thrilled fans by jarring in his tee shot on the 16th hole during the round. "He has more power, hitting shorter irons into greens, while Im probably playing more for position. He can be more aggressive. I told him to be mindful of that. Im telling him out how I play it because Im back there hitting a four-iron." For DeLaet, the chance to play at Augusta National with Weir was more than an exercise in local knowledge, it was also the chance to play with one of his golfing idols. In 2007, when he teed it up in the Canadian Open for the first time, DeLaet managed to get his picture taken with the lefthanded star. Its a picture he keeps hanging on his wall at home to this day. "He was the guy I looked to when I was a kid," admitted DeLaet. "Now I call him my friend. Going around here, the respect he gets from the crowd – and rightfully so – is pretty cool." Now DeLaet has to take all the information and put it to use. His caddy, Julien Trudeau – who also raved about the details Weir passed on – said he and his boss will sit down and formulate a game plan for their opening round. That game plan will also try to take into account the butterflies that will undoubtedly be in DeLaets stomach when he gets set to start his first Masters. "I know that Im going to be nervous, Im nervous at the Byron Nelson tournament," he stated. "I do have a couple of majors under my belt now which is going to help a little bit but I dont know exactly what Im going to feel like on (the first tee) on Thursday but Im looking forward to it." Millers Crossing Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News writes that netminder Ryan Miller is unsure about his future with the Sabres. Heading into Wednesdays game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Miller said, "anything is possible" when pondering if it was his last game in Buffalo. Asked point-blank by The Buffalo News if hes told the Sabres he wants out - or told them hes all-in to talk about a contract extension - Miller remained elusive. "Thats not really something I want to discuss with you guys," he said. "Its a private conversation about a business transaction. Really, thats what it comes down to. Im waiting to see kind of what the plans are around here. That would kind of give a little more indication. "They cant execute anything they might be planning until some time passes, where they make some trades or they have some kind of indication whats going to happen. Even then, theres no guarantee theyre going to get everything they want. Its just kind of well wait and see." Harrington also wrote that Sabres GM Tim Murray pretty much confirmed that hes in limbo on dealing Miller as well. Murray said the Sabres are studying options all over their roster but the scuttlebutt around the league is theyre getting plenty of inquiries on pending unrestricted free agents Miller, Steve Ott and Matt Moulson, as well as interest in defenceman Henrik Tallinder. "Theree are players on the team were certainly going to go forward with, young guys that they fit what we want to do," Murray said.dddddddddddd "In saying that, if a team calls and they absolutely knock your socks off, then I guess Ive told a fib by saying were going to go forward with a certain player and Ive traded him. It doesnt look right, but thats my motto. Im willing to listen on every single player, so Im certainly listening on Ryan. Is that our plan? I guess well see what other teams have to say." Moving Mike? While TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported Tuesday on Twitter that the Calgary Flames and Mike Cammalleri are "continuing dialogue on new contract," Wes Gilbertson of The Calgary Sun says it would be a surprise if the clubs highest-paid player wasnt moved before the deadline. Staying Focused Derek Van Diest of The Edmonton Sun writes that Oilers centre Sam Gagner is focused on helping Edmonton win games rather than trade speculation. "Its something where you try and block it out," Gagner said. "I think its an easier thing to do the further you are from the trade deadline, but as it creeps up, its sometimes hard. I think its important just to focus on your game. I have some things that I need to continue to get better at, and thats something that Im trying to focus on right now, trying to help this team win games, and hopefully, I can do that heading towards the stretch here." Around the Wheel: Three Thoughts from the Weekend 1) Head Games: Much has been made over Chelsea not dealing with the head injury to goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois after taking the brunt of a collision with Arsenals Alexis Sanchez. Courtois was allowed to continue after looking to be knocked out momentarily in the 10th minute, before going down with blood coming from his ear in the 24th. Chelsea has excused itself by claiming the blood came from a cut. If thats what the on-field trainers actually claim, than so be it, but it seems far-fetched. Courtois should not have been allowed to continue. Just as Spurs goalkeeper Hugo Lloris should have been taken out of the game last season after his collision with Romelu Lukaku. Predictable calls for further measures have followed from the incident. More rules do not need to be put into place. Protocol need be abided by. Football Association rules state: - A player suffering a head injury must leave the pitch - Club doctor must decide if a player can continue - An additional tunnel doctor must be present on match days to help doctors on both sides - Tunnel doctor also spots potential concussions and watches TV replays to assess incidents These all seem reasonable. Doctors must do whats best for the player and avoid being influenced by the emotion of the moment, or even the player and/or manager. The doctor need take control, as protocol states. If these doctors are incapable of doing their job, making critical decisions, then they should not be on the touchline, period. Player simulation makes determining injury that much more difficult. If there is any doubt, the player must come off. Head injuries are not going away. Incompetence must. 2) Yaya: Hes Good: One goal. Thats all it takes. Yaya Toure has been much criticized for his lethargic start to the season. A moment of brilliance, breaking the deadlock against Aston Villa in the 82nd minute with a bending effort past two defenders, signaled to many his return to form. It was his first goal of the season on 17 shots compared to 20 goals on 64 a season ago. Toure has been a dominant force for City since joining in 2010. His stature and versatility makes him among the best in the country. He is not without his detractors because of a temperamental persona. Stories emanating putting his City future in doubt and tales of scorned feelings surrounding birthday wishes puzzle. These off-field talking points make him a convenient character to blame when all doesnt go right. City has gone through a stop-start beginning to the season. Thus, Toure takes the heat. Has Toure been great thus far? No. But its just seven games, and in fairness, he hasnt been that bad either. His summer was unproductive dealing with a long-standing thigh injury that limited him at the World Cup. More so than anything, Toures play has mirrored the inconsistency of his team. Its not just him. The standard set by Toure is so high the criticism is unfair. Look for him to go on a run coming out of the International break. 3) MUFC Midfield Meltdown: Manchester Uniteds injury-depleted back four has come under fire as the soft spot in the team. As witnessed by a barrage in the final ten minutes by Everton Sunday, its not all on the backline. The young back four has actually been quite good over the last two games. The midfield defensively has been a mess. The midfield shape has consistently crumbled late in matches leaving the defenders and goalkeeper to take on far too much responsibility. Daley Blind is the only midfielder immune from blame, exceptional in positioning while actually covering too much space because of the flaws of those around him. Angel Di Maria is a star, but can be argued hes best suited atop the midfield diamond. The Argentine does so much running his defensive marking wanes in the final 15 minutes of matches. Antonio Valencia is not an ideal player to play a more central role with little use for his left-foot. And Juan Mata is a defensive liability. The result is a midfield leaving too many holes and vulnerable when pressured. Marouane Fellaini made things worse after coming on, running about all over the place and out of position. The midfield shape will improve when Ander Herrera and Michael Carrick return from injury. This may not be enough. More drastic changes may be required to solve the defensive woes. Team of the Week De Gea (MUFC) Elmohamady (HUL) a€“ Vertonghen (TOT) - Kolarov (MCFC) Mahrez (LEI) - Sigurdsson (SWA) - Henderson (LFC) a€“ Oscar (CHE) a€“ Di Maria (MUFC) Wickham (SUN) a€“ Cisse (NUFC) Player of the Week: Jordan Henderson (Liverpool) a€“ A goal and an assist from the England International in a 2-1 win over West Brom. His back-heal on Adam Lallanas first half goal was of the highest quality. His first goal of the season was the match-winner: a composed strike after a penalty claim, picking out the corner and placing through a slew of bodies. It was a wonderful game for a player emerging as the most important in the team. Goal of the Week: Ross Wallace (Burnley) a€“ Burnley needed a lift and they got one late. Wallaces superb bending free-kick goal stands as the latest of the season (95:15) as Burnley came from behind twice to earn a 2-2 draw. The Scotsman was cool as can be, curling from 20 yards out with his left foot into the top right corner. It was a bit of class from a team showing not nearly enough. Save of the Week: David De Gea (MUFC) a€“ Manchester United can thank Spanish Dave for single-handedly ensuring all three points in a 2-1 win over Everton. A penalty save on Leighton Baines (the defenders first-ever league penalty miss) and a pair of tremendous saves on Leon Osman were the appetizers. The best came in the 94th minute. A scramble in the area and De Gea dove to his right on shot blocked by Tyler Blackett. The ball came on the bounce to Bryan Oviedo at the top of the box who unleashed a volley with eyes for the top right corner. De Gea bounced back to his feet before diving to his left knocking the ball over the bar. Even Evertons Steven Naismith paid tribute, high-fiving De Gea after his remarkable save. Moment of the Weekend: Wenger vs. Mourinho a€“ The Internet sensation of the weekend: Arsene Wenger shoving Jose Mourinho. Wenger was rightfully upset after Gary Cahill took out Sanchez on the touchline with a tackle certainly worth more than the caution he received. Wenger came straight out of his technical area into Mourinhos domain. The shove by Wenger was meager but the exchange heated. The push is yet another typical distraction from managers regularly in the spotlight. Grandstanding at its worst. Wenger should have been sent to the stands. Mourinho should have joined him. Managers have been sent away during a match for far less. You simply cannot leave your technical area and engage another manager. Stat of the Week a€“ Chelseas Cesc Fabregas has as many assists (7) as the entire Arsenal squad and as many as any Chelsea player had all of last season. Stat of the Week II a€“ Arsenal failed to register a shot on target against Chelsea for the first time since 2003. Quote of the Week: I will go home and shine my manager of the year trophy to give myself a bit of confidence and come in tomorrow. a€“ Embattled Newcastle United manager Alan Pardews cheeky response to the continual questioning regarding his future. Table Talk 1) Chelsea (19 pts) a€“ 19 points from 21 matches, but dont hand Chelsea the title yet. In 08/09, Chelsea started by winning 10 of 13. The Blues won eight of their first 10 in 10/11. And Chelsea started with seven wins and a draw in 12/13. Chelsea failed to win the title any of those seasons. 2) Manchester City (14) a€“ Sergio Aguero scored again in Citys 2-0 win at Villa Park and now has 22 goals in his last 25 starts. No player created more chances over the weekend (7) than a rejuvenated James Milner. 3) Southampton (13) a€“ Saido Mane missed an absolute sitter inside the six-yard box that would have equalized at White Hart Lane. Six-game winning streak in all competitions came to an end. 4) Manchester United (11) a€“ Fourth place is a bit deceiving having played a soft schedule thus far. Louis Van Gaal has picked 30 different players in seven matches a€“ six more than any other club. The injuries continue to mount with Paddy McNair (hamstring) out three weeks. Falcao has struggled with his first touch on the ball. Lets see if his first Premier League goal settles him down. 5) Swansea City (11) a€“ Centre-back frailties were exposed by Newcastle. Need to tighten up at the back. Gylfi Sigurdsson dropping deep is awfully effective, taking over the Michu role in the side. Two assists on the day for the Icelandic international and now has six on the season. 6) Tottenham Hotspur (11) a€“ Much better tempo in 1-0 win over Southampton. Jan Vertonghen has been standout in back-to-back weeks, making nine clearances and misplacing just one pass in the win. 7) West Ham United (10) a€“ Another impressive performance by the Hammers. Diafra scored his fifth goal in five starts. Aaron Cresswell continues to star. 8) Arsenal (10) a€“ 10 points from seven matches is the second worst Premier League start under Wenger. Laurent Koscielny remains a frustrating player. His talent is plain to see but gets caught flat-footed all too often. It was the seventh penalty he has conceded while at Arsenal. Better footwork is required from the Frenchman. 9) Liverpool (10) a€“ A nervous 2-1 victory at a tense Anfield. Nothing came easy for Liverpool and the team remains disjointed. The centre-backs have trouble dealing with pace. Sturridge will be key upon his return after the International break. 10) Aston Villa (10) a€“ Another solid effort against a better team. An incredibly difficult stretch (Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, Man City) is over. Fabian Delph has been invaluable, yet is in need of a new contract. Christian Benteke returned after a six-month lay-off (Achilles) and immediate upgrades the attack. 11) Hull City (9) a€“ Reverting back to a 3-5-2 worked wonders for Steve Bruce, winning just their second league match in 12. Ahmed Elmohamady and Andrew Robertson were dominant at wingback. Mohamed Diame has three goals on three shots on target this season. Nikica Jelavic has matched his goal tally (4) of all last year. 12) Leicester City (9) a€“ Disappointing result for second consecutive week after upsetting Manchester United. Riyad Mahrez was a force down the right side. Jamie Vardy continues to be the ultimate pest in attack. 13) Sunderland (8) a€“ Respectable forward play returns. Steven Fletcher popped up with the brace and was clearly emotional after recent stinging criticism of his play. The true star was Connor Wickham with a goal and an assist. Hes a physical specimen showing signs he will come good on all his promise. First win of the season for Gus Poyet. 14) West Bromwich Albion (8) a€“ Leave with their heads held high after a competitive 2-1 loss at Anfield. Cristian Gamboa is intriguing, getting up the wing at will. Sebastien Pocognoli seems a superior option to Jonas Olsson at centre-back. 15) Crystal Palace (8) a€“ An uncharacteristic lethargic performance at Hull City. Need to play with superior team spirit and commitment to make up for lack of talent in the side. 16) Stoke City (8) a€“ Potters lost their best player and the game at Sunderland. Victor Moses (thigh) limped off after just 18 minutes and will now miss the next three weeks. Need other attacking players to step up in his absence. 17) Everton (6) a€“ Good news: Steven Naismith continues to shine, having scored four goals on five shots on target. Bad news: injuries continue to add up for a team short on squad depth. The all-important John Stones (ankle ligaments) is the latest casualty. Team is much better than current standing. 18) Newcastle United (4) a€“ Still no win for Alan Pardew yet enough to keep his job. Papiss Cisses return from a fractured kneecap is quite incredible, with four goals in three outings. Cheick Tiote may want to leave, but who would want him? The midfielder has been abysmal. 19) Burnley (4) a€“ Deserved point for Burnley, as they pressured the Leicester goal on numerous occasions. Burnleys first goal ended a 565-minute goal drought. Ross Wallaces wonderful free kick equalizer in the 96th minute came at the expense of Kieran Trippier, who was stretchered off after an ugly right ankle injury. 20) Queens Park Rangers (4) a€“ The worst team play in the league and its not close. QPR has lost all four away matches, outscored by 11 goals in the process. @WheelerTSN gareth.wheeler@bellmedia.ca Russell Martin Jersey . -- Deshorn Brown scored twice, the first coming 13 seconds into the game, and the Colorado Rapids beat the undermanned Seattle Sounders 5-1 Saturday night. It was weird, difficult at first to get going, Gasol admitted. Once you start playing, youre just playing the best game you can. The 36-year-old Bryant cited old age and sore knees as his reasons for sitting out Thursday nights game against Chicago during a pregame session with reporters. The team is struggling right now and its difficult to see him struggle, Gasol said of Bryant and the Lakers. The game in LA will probably be a little more emotional than this one. Gasol will return to Staples Center to play the Lakers on Jan. 29. Jimmy Butler posted 21 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Derrick Rose added 20 points and six assists for Chicago, which has won five straight and eight of its last nine games. Wesley Johnson supplied 19 points and nine boards and Ed Davis provided 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers, who have dropped four of their last five contests. Butlers turnaround fadeaway in the waning seconds of tthe first half staked Chicago to a 58-47 halftime advantage, but an 11-2 Lakers run to start the second half got them within a basket.dddddddddddd Jordan Hill had six points during the surge, which was capped on a Johnson layup to trim the margin to 60-58. The Bulls pulled away during the latter stages of the third and early portion of the fourth with an 11-3 burst. Taj Gibson split a pair of foul shots to finish off the swing and give the Bulls a 92-80 spread. Chicago cruised to the easy win from there. Earlier, the Bulls led 27-24 following a quarter of play and outscored LA 31-23 in the second. It was also the first game for Carlos Boozer in a Lakers uniform playing against his former team. Boozer, who was claimed off waivers by the Lakers in July, had played the previous four seasons for Chicago. He had 14 points off the bench. At some point you have to put the emotions and feelings aside, go out there and win a basketball game, Boozer said. They came in waves. Game Notes Gasol signed a three-year, $22 million contract with Chicago during the offseason ... It wouldve been Bryants NBA-record 16th Christmas Day game had he suited up. He came in averaging 30.4 points over his last nine Christmas games ... LA turned the ball over just four times, but was outrebounded 57-39. With their 2-1 win over Aston Villa, Bournemouth surpassed the 40-point mark with five games to spare. As they approach the end of their maiden season in the top flight, Eddie Howes side are in 11th place and just three points behind defending champions Chelsea. They are closer to the European places than the relegation zone.Perhaps the greatest testament to the achievement is that nobody is talking about it. Bournemouth were supposed to be on their way back to the Championship by now. Instead, a run of nine wins from 18 games since the start of December has given them the air of seasoned Premier League campaigners. Their survival hasnt looked in doubt for months. Howe hails landmark tally Eddie Howe declared himself delighted to reach the 40-point mark with victory at Aston Villa. And yet the circumstances could hardly have been more challenging. In the space of a few weeks between August and September, months of planning went out the window as club-record signing Tyrone Mings, £7m winger Max Gradel and top scorer Callum Wilson were struck down by knee ligament injuries. It was a nightmare scenario equivalent to Leicester losing Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Christian Fuchs, or Spurs having to cope without Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose. But Howe adapted without complaint, and even an eight-game winless run before Christmas wasnt enough to shake Bournemouths spirit. Bournemouths win over Aston Villa took them past the 40-point mark in the Premier League If you look at what theyve done in isolation or compare it to what everybody else has done in this league, it has been quite a remarkable feat, former England striker Luther Blissett, who spent three seasons at Bounemouth between 1988 and 1991, told Sky Sports. When they picked up the injuries they were written off and people were saying they were going to go down. They went through a period where they couldnt buy a victory but they kept plugging away. Youve got to give credit to the manager. He believes in his methods and the players, and they believe in it too.Bournemouths success owes a lot to good coaching and hard work, with Howe demanding maximum dedication and effort from his players at all times. Premier League tracking data shows they cover more distance per game than any other side, while only Liverpool and Tottenham record more high-intensity sprints. Most distance covered - Premier League 2015/16 Team Distance covered per game Bournemouth 117.2km Tottenham 115.9km Liverpool 112.4km West Brom 112.2km Man Utd 111.2km The breathless style is epitomised by midfielder Andrew Surman, who averages 12.1km per game, second only to Liverpools James Milner in the Premier League. All our training is high-intensity, he told the Daily Express in March. The manager has really high standards. He keeps that intensity high, and he expects it in return. If you drop your standards for one day, he is on you.Bournemouth brought in 11 new signings to strengthen their squad over the course of the season, but Howe values togetherness and continuity highly. As such, all seven of their players to have made 30 or more Premier League appearances had a key role in their promotion from the Championship last season, and six of them are British, too. Bournemouths spine The seven Bournemouth players to make 30 or more Premier League appearances are Andrew Surman, Simon Francis, Charlie Daniels, Matt Ritchie, Adam Smith, Dan Gosling and Steve Cook. Hes predominantly got British players there, so for them to be in the position they are is quite a feat, added Blissett. Its become so acceptable to just bring mediocre foreign players in, you forget that we have got very good British-based players here.dddddddddddd Hes given them an opportunity to play in the Premier League and the rewards are obvious. Not every signing that you bring in will be successful. So the more you bring in, the more disharmony you create in the squad, and thats something that never, ever goes away once you have started down that road. He needed to keep that harmony and belief and only bring in players who suited the club, the manager and the style - and hes managed to do that. Hes predominantly got British players there, so for them to be in the position they are is quite a feat. Luther Blissett One of the most impressive aspects of Bournemouths survival is the manner in which they have achieved it. The Cherries won the Championship playing slick, possession-based football, and Howe has stuck to his principles in the top-flight. They rank in the top 10 for passes, possession and chances created, and only Arsenal and Everton have completed more dribbles. Most dribbles completed - Premier League 2015/16 Team Dribbles Arsenal 397 Everton 384 Bournemouth 371 Man City 369 Chelsea 369 Saturdays cleverly worked opener against Aston Villa - where Matt Ritchies drag-back set up Simon Francis from a quickly-taken corner - was an example of Howes ability to innovate, and it is no mean feat to have scored more goals than Manchester United in their first season in the Premier League. You do have to adapt your style a little bit the higher up you go, but I think the ideal behind what youre looking to do should always be the same, says Bissett. If your players are able to cope with continuing what you started, then youve got to let them get on with it. Youve got to show them that belief, and theyve all done that at Bournemouth. They do play decent football and they do knock the ball around, and its good to see that theyve achieved what they have done in that way. Even the games theyve ended up losing have been entertaining. They go out with the intent to attack the opposition and that is a major factor in the success that they have had. Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe gave his post-match thoughts to Sky Sports after beating Aston Villa There have been heavy losses to the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham, but Bournemouth are no pushovers and Howe has shown tactical expertise, too.Along with Arsenal, they are one of only two sides unbeaten in two games against Leicester this season, and with their battling goalless draw at the King Power Stadium in January, they became one of only three sides to stop Claudio Ranieris men from scoring.Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United are among Bournemouths opponents in their final five games of the season, but they can approach the daunting run knowing Premier League status is assured. Their achievements may have passed under the radar, but Howe and his players are exactly where they belong.Luther Blissetts company Bliss8 is powering a new youth academy at non-league side Burnham FC Also See: Howe hails landmark tally Premier League grades Cheap Chargers Jerseys Cheap Rams Jersey Cheap Dolphins Jerseys Cheap Vikings Jerseys Cheap Patriots Jersey Cheap Saints Jerseys Cheap New York Giants Jerseys Cheap Jets Jerseys Cheap Raiders Jerseys Cheap Eagles Jerseys Cheap Steelers Jerseys Cheap 49ers Jerseys Cheap Seahawks Jerseys Cheap Buccaneers Jerseys Cheap Titans Jerseys Cheap Redskins Jerseys ' ' '

    • OTTAWA -- Home sweet home. Cody Ceci grew up in Orleans in the east end of Ottawa about 30 minutes from Canadian Tire Centre. He played junior hockey with the Ottawa 67s and Monday night he scored his first NHL goal in overtime as the Ottawa Senators beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2. Ceci recovered a clearing attempt by the Blues and sent a wrist shot towards the St. Louis goal that beat Brian Elliot at 3:59 of the extra period. "I had probably a better opportunity right before that with a slapshot with a pretty open look but it didnt go as high up as I wanted it to," Ceci said of a shot seconds before his goal. "Next thing I know I get the puck at the blue-line and theres a lot of traffic crossing in front of the goalie. I just kind of floated it through and it found the net. Ill definitely remember this. "Its a special moment, it couldnt have happened at a better time and Im really happy things worked out the way they did." Ceci has two goals this season with the Binghamton Senators and both of those have also been overtime winners. Jean Gabriel Pageau and Bobby Ryan scored in regulation for the Senators (14-15-6), who picked up points for the fifth time in their past six games. They only time they have been held pointless during that time was a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Chris Stewart had both goals for the Blues (22-6-4) and both came late in the second period and both were set up by Ottawa native Derek Roy. Roy also took a hooking penalty in overtime but the Senators were unable to take advantage of the four-on-three. Ryan scored a highlight-reel goal on a pass from Kyle Turris, who put the puck on Ryans tape from 40 feet away, right in front of the St. Louis goal. Ryan cut in front, went to his backhand and beat Elliott to tie the game 2-2. It was also the only goal of the third period and sent the game to overtime. "We feel much better with the way we played. We played a very good opponent in back-to-back games. The game against L.A. didnt turn out near as good as this one did, but I thought we responded," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "Our completion level and our commitment to playing without the puck and playing the game hard was much better and at a much higher level. "The good news for us is that we did it and now we have to come back and get prepared to do it again and that starts tomorrow at practice." Goaltending played a key role throughout the game as former Senator Elliott duelled with Ottawas Robin Lehner. Each made some big saves, especially through the first two periods. "Its not the way you want to lose a game. We all kind of made mistakes but I thought we battled hard to get back. Its a tough way to lose," Elliott said. "We got a point but weve got to answer right back against San Jose at home tomorrow." Pageau beat Elliott early in the game as he found the back of the net over the Blues goalies glove. Ryan set up the play from behind the net, finding Pageau in the slot. That goal at 3:37 of the first stood up as the only goal until just 3:10 remained in the second when Stewart scored his first of two goals. Roy made a long breakout pass to Stewart, who slid a backhand along the ice and through the legs of Lehner at the end of a breakaway. With just 12 seconds remaining in the second, Brendan Morrows miscue led to Stewarts go-ahead goal. While behind the net, Morrow fanned on a pass attempt out front but the puck went directly to Roy at the side of the goal. Roys no-look backhand pass was met with no hesitation as Stewart delivered a one-timer to the far side past Lehner for a 2-1 St. Louis lead. "They played really hard in the first period but I thought the way we played in the second was one of the best road periods we played all year," said Blues coach Ken Hitchcock. "We really took it to them and at times overwhelmed them with our forecheck, so I was really happy with the point." SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Yannick Djalo scored a goal and added three assists to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 5-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday night. Thats what he did over the past 2 1/2 years with the Washington Wizards. Wittmans approach helped turn the Wizards from pushover to playoff winners. Now hell have a chance to stick around following a 44-38 season, a 15-win improvement from last year, after the Wizards gave him a contract extension. "I think over the last couple of years what weve begun to establish here, continuity I think is important," Wittman said Wednesday in the hallway near the practice court at the Verizon Center. "Im appreciative of the opportunity to continue on." The Wizards reached the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and won their first post-season series since 2005. They accomplished it in the final year of Wittmans contract and under a preseason mandate to make the playoffs from owner Ted Leonsis. "I was here when it was not pretty. When you see it change, when you see the things that youve implemented begin to work, you want to continue on," the 54-year-old Wittman said. Wittman guided the Wizards to a first-round win over the Chicago Bulls before losing in six games to the top-seeded Indiana Pacers in their Eastern Conference semifinal. "Over the last 2 1/2 years really, Randy has established a great culture, a hard-working culture, a defensive-oriented team," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. "Weve been a top-10 defensive team in the league the last two years. Weve made good progress. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but were headded in the right direction.ddddddddddddquot; Asked if retaining Wittman was an easy decision," Grunfeld stated," Yes, it was." Having already coached rebuilding squads with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves, Wittman took over as head coach when Flip Saunders was fired in January 2012. As was the case in those other spots, losses starting piling up in Washington. Wittman has the worst regular-season record of anyone who has coached at least 400 NBA games — 191-329, a .367 winning percentage — since the league started in 1946. "Job security is fleeting, as we all know in this business," said Wittman, who played in the NBA for nine seasons. "If you worry about it, youre not going to do your job well." With John Wall sidelined, the Wizards opened the 2012-13 season with a 4-28 record. When their point guard returned, Washington finished 24-25. With Wall healthy and turning into a first-time All-Star alongside backcourt partner Bradley Beal, Washington ended the 2013-14 season fifth in the Eastern Conference. Washington has plenty of decisions remaining. Two starters — centre Marcin Gortat and forward Trevor Ariza — are unrestricted free agents. Overall, 10 players are entering some level of free agency or the organization must decide whether to exercise a team option. Though Wittman and Grunfeld have stated a desire to the keep the core intact, the roster could certainly look different next season. But the man on the sideline will be familiar. So were his next seven. Even his longest pass came down in the exact spot he intended. Perfect, all around. Dalton completed all eight of his passes and led the Bengals to a pair of touchdowns and a field goal during three impressive series Saturday night before the New York Jets reserves rallied for a 25-17 preseason victory. "He continues to play the way we think Andy should play all the time," coach Marvin Lewis said. "It doesnt surprise me. Its the way he practices every day. He doesnt need to be flashy. He just needs to be accurate. He just needs to handle the offence. He does that very well." It was Daltons first game at Paul Brown Stadium since his turnover-filled 27-10 loss to San Diego in the opening round of the playoffs. Also, it was his first home game since he signed a six-year contract extension that showed Cincinnatis commitment. Couldnt have gone any better. In an experiment, the Jets moved safety Antonio Allen to cornerback and had him cover A.J. Green. It didnt go well at all — Green caught three passes for 69 yards, including a 35-yard catch after he pulled away from Allen down the sideline. BOSTON -- "The Star-Spangled Banner" played over Boylston Street in honour of an American winner of the Boston Marathon. One year after a bombing there killed three people and left more than 260 injured, Meb Keflezighi added Boston to a resume that includes the New York City Marathon title in 2009 and a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics. Running just two weeks before his 39th birthday, he had the names of the 2013 bombing victims on his bib. "At the end, I just kept thinking, Boston Strong. Boston Strong," he said. "I was thinking Give everything you have. If you get beat, thats it." Keflezighi completed the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to the finish on Boylston Street in Bostons Back Bay on Monday in a personal-best 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds. He held off Kenyas Wilson Chebet, who finished 11 seconds behind. Edmontons Tom McGrath was the top Canadian, finishing 101st in 2:30:24. Keflezighi went out early and built a big lead. But he was looking over his shoulder several times as Chebet closed the gap over the final two miles. After realizing he wouldnt be caught, Keflezighi raised his sunglasses, began pumping his right fist and made the sign of the cross. He broke into tears after crossing the finish line, then draped himself in the American flag. No U.S. runner had won the race since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach took the womens title in 1985. The last American man to win was Greg Meyer in 1983. Meyer and Keflezighi embraced after the race. "Im blessed to be an American and God bless America and God bless Boston for this special day," Keflezighi said. Rita Jeptoo of Kenya successfully defended the womens title she said she could not enjoy a year ago. Jeptoo finished in a course-record 2 hours, 18 minutes, 57 seconds. She is a three-time Boston Marathon champion, having also won in 2006. "I came here to support the people in Boston and show them that we are here together," she said. "I decided to support them and show them we are here together." Jeptoo broke away from a group of five runners at the 23-mile mark. Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia finished second in 2:19:59. Countrywoman Mare Dibaba was third at 2:19:52. All three women came in under the previous course record. Lanni Marchant of London, Ont., was the top Canadian in 14th. American Shalane Flanagan, who went to high school in nearby Marblehead, finished seventh after leading for more than half the race. She gambled by setting the early pace, but fell back on the Newton Hills about 21 miles into the race. "It does mean a lot to be that my city was proud of me," she said. "Im proud of how I ran. I dont wish I was it was easier. I wish I was better." After breaking a 27-year American drought at the New York marathon, Keflezighi contemplated retiring after the 2012 NYC Marathon. But that race was cancelled because of Superstorm Sandy, and he pulled out of the Boston Marathon last April because of injury. He watched the race from the stands at the finish line, but said he left about five minutes before the bombs went off. He was the first American to medal in an Olympic marathon since Frank Shorter won gold in 1972 and silver in 1976. His 2009 New York victory broke a 27-year American drought there. Another American, Tatyana McFadden, celebrated her 25th birthday Monday by winning the womens wheelchair race for the second straight year. She was timed in in 1 hour, 35 minutes, 6 seconds. McFadden was born in Russia and lived in an orphanage as a child before starring at the University of Illinois. She also won the 2013 NYC Marathon womens wheelchair race after taking the titles in Boston, London and Chicago last year. Ernst van Dyk of South Africa won the mens wheelchair division for a record 10th time. The 41-year-old crossed in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 36 seconds. Van Dyk holds the record for most all-categories Boston Marathon wins. This was his first win at this race since 2010. Last years mens champion, Lelisa Desisa, did not finish this years race, and had to be picked up by a van about 21 miles into the event. Marathon officials said 35,755 runners registered for the race, with 32,408 unofficial starters. The field included just less than 5,000 runners who were not able to finish last year and accepted invitations to return this year. Martin St. Louis Jersey . NEW YORK -- Stuck in a batting slump all week, the New York Mets seemed unlikely to even get a hit. Scoring? That looked downright impossible. Yet somehow, they rallied. The Mets suddenly struck for three runs in the ninth inning against Philadelphias makeshift bullpen minus closer Jonathan Papelbon, then ended a five-game skid by beating the Phillies 5-4 Sunday on Ruben Tejadas single in the 11th. "Desperate? You can call it desperate if you want to, but we have to stay positive," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "I dont know, standing on the edge of the cliff probably is a better way to describe it." Down 4-1 with only three outs left, the punchless Mets fought back, sparked by Daniel Murphys two-run homer. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Papelbon was sore and unavailable to pitch in a third straight game. "The daily grind of the season," Papelbon said. "Its just kind of a product of the last couple of games." Lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo and Roberto Hernandez -- who started Friday night -- quickly let the Phillies lead slip away. In the 11th, Chris Young opened with an infield single, barely beating the flip from second baseman Chase Utleys glove. The Mets sent up pitcher Zack Wheeler as a pinch-hitter, and he put down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved Young to second. Juan Lagares drew an intentional walk and Anthony Recker loaded with the bases with another infield hit stopped by diving third baseman Reid Brignac. Tejada won it with one out, hitting a sharp single to left-centre against Jeff Manship (1-1). Tejadas teammates chased him down in short right field to celebrate. "It feels pretty good after a rough week for me and the team," said Tejada, who recently lost his starting job at shortstop. Scott Rice (1-1) got Brignac on a grounder with two runners on to finish the 11th. Held to a total of nine runs in their previous five games, the Mets began their comeback in the ninth when Eric Young Jr. led off with a double and Murphy followed with a home run that made it 4-3. Chris Young ended his 0-for-18 slump by hitting a one-out double off the wall, and Hernandez emerged from the bullpen -- he threw 99 pitches in the series opener. Pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu singled off the glove of a diving Utley, and a slow grounder by Lagares drove in the tying run. When Tejada came up in the 11th, he said he had one thought in mind: "Finish the game." The Mets comeback denied Cole Hamels his elusive first win of the year and the 100th of his career. He struck out 10 in seven innings while throwing a whopping 133 pitches, the most by any major leaguer since San Franciscos Tim Lincecum tossed 148 in his no-hitter last July 13. The Mets started quickly when Young Jr. led off with a single and stole second, Murphy walked and David Wright hit an RBI single. Lefty-hitting Curtis Granderson didnt start vs. Hamels, but Collins said the outfielder would be in the lineup Monday night. It will be Grandersons first game in the Bronx since leaving the Yankees in the off-season, signing with the Mets and saying: "A lot of the people Ive met in New York have always said that true New Yorkers are Mets fans." ... Several players swung pink bats on Mothers Day to support the fight against breast cancer. In keeping with the days theme, Mets reliever Carlos Torres asked the team to play the hip-hop song "Dear Mama" by the late Tupac Shakur over the PA system if he got into the game Sunday. Torres didnt pitch. ... It was Bark at the Park Day to support pet rescue and adoption. Many fans brought their dogs for a pregame parade around the warning track. Not barking was longtime Mets hot dog vendor Willie B, popular for his loud woofing in the second deck. He said his back was hurting, so he was carrying a lighter tray of pretzels. Real dogs are allowed to sit with their owners in the right-field porch at these Bark events -- on those days, Willie B says he instead refers to his usual wares as "frankfurters, out of respect." Harrison Phillips Bills Jersey .C. -- Benn Ferrieros familiar with scoring important goals, just not in back-to-back games.MINSK, Belarus -- Before Mark Scheifele got injured in early March, the Winnipeg Jets sat one point out of a playoff spot. A sprained right knee derailed any hope of making a run. Now Scheifele is healthy, and Team Canada heads into the playoff round at the world hockey championship with legitimate medal aspirations thanks in part to his progression. "Every game hes got better and better," coach Dave Tippett said. "Hes been good in the faceoff dot, puck control. ... Were going to need everybody to be a good team in the quarter-final, and Scheif, his game has improved every game we played." Scheifele assisted on Ryan Elliss overtime winner against Sweden, scored against Norway and is making use of his increased ice time. Along with the Toronto Maple Leafs Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri and the Calgary Flames Sean Monahan, the 21-year-old Jets centre is making big strides in Minsk. "You just gain experience," Scheifele said. "You play against different kinds of hockey. Its just kind of a matter of learning how to adapt to who youre playing against, what kind of competition youre coming against. Obviously just playing with and against the best players in the world helps." Each game is a new test for the young Canadian team, but Scheifeles journey to the world championships showed Paul Maurice something. Maurice, his coach in Winnipeg and an assistant to Tippett at this tournament, was impressed by how hard Scheifele worked to recover from a sprained MCL to be ready. At first, the coaching staff saw a player who hadnt experienced game action in more than two months. Then Maurice saw the player who was so vital to the Jets when healthy. "Hes responded like Mark does: He just got better," Maurice said. "He didnt play a lot in the (first) few games and kept working hard in practice and hed get his handful of shifts one night and show you something in each shift. Dave Tippett is really strong at recognizing that in players during games, so hes gotten more and more opportunity." Scheifele, who is expected to again centre the fourth line in Thursdays quarter-final game against Finland, had a leg up on Monahan going in because he had a little more experience. But he wasnt quite himself. That made Scheifele the 13th forward and his ice time dropped. The Kitchener, Ont., native played just 2:20 in the second game against Slovakia and then 2:34 the next one against the Czech Republic. A leg injury to Alex Burrows -- who practised Wednesday and is set to return against Finland after a two-game absence -- gave Scheifele another chance. His patience set up arguably Canadas biggest goal of the tournament, and he scored another to help ensure first place in the group. "I think every game I kind of get a little more ice, a little more comfortable," Scheifele said. "Every game, just getting my legs under me, and thats the biggest thing. I feel more comfortable every game, and I just got to continue that." The tests are just beginning for the world championship rookies, including 20-year-old Flames prospect Johnny Gaudreau, whose U.S. team faces the Czech Republic on Thursday for the righht to face the winner of Canada-Finland.dddddddddddd "Playing with NHL players and playing against NHL players obviously will help me in my game and help me develop as a player," Gaudreau said. "Playing college the last three years I felt this would be the best opportunity to help me become a better pro." Olli Jokinen, a teammate of Scheifeles with the Jets and captain of Finland, agrees wholeheartedly. "Everybodys goal is to make the playoffs and have a long run. At the same time with the younger players coming here, I think for them understanding the games like this. Its like a Game 7 in the playoffs," Jokinen said. "Having experience like that, its going to help you to get even better. And at the same time, for the younger guys, its an eye-opener, probably, too, how tough this tournament actually is." Tippett likes that his younger players get an opportunity to play in "real competitive, playoff-style games." Rielly considers it beneficial to work with three different coaches he didnt know before and thinks that itll help him learn quicker in the future. "You get a chance to kind of learn new breakouts, new power-play things," the 20-year-old Leafs defenceman said. "I think if youre trying to keep learning like that, thats always helpful. I think Ill be able to carry that back to Toronto with me." Scheifele and Maurice will be able to carry something back to Winnipeg, as well. The tournament is just another chance for the coach who signed a four-year deal and the Jets franchise forward to get better accustomed to each other after just half a season together. Maurice said hes still learning about Scheifele, but he has a lot to be proud of over the past couple of months. "What I really like is how hes handled the adversity of the injury," Maurice said. "When something doesnt go his way, he doesnt quit. He digs in and works harder and competes and then I also recognize that this is a learning experience for him. Over the course of his career hes going to have some adversity. "The question is how do you learn to handle it, and hes learned to handle it here with some pretty high-level hockey where he wasnt handed ice time and he fought his way through it and became a real important part of the team here." According to Jokinen, Scheifele followed the same path in his first full NHL season as he has at the world championships. As a result, he has a chance to be a major contributor for Canada now that every game is an elimination game. "It took him a little bit of time to get used to it," Jokinen said. "But once he started feeling comfortable, he was really good for us. Hes a highly skilled player, he can be the difference-maker every time when he steps on the ice." NOTES -- Tippett would not reveal which goaltender, Ben Scrivens or James Reimer, would start Thursday against Finland, which has no such dilemma thanks to the presence of a healthy Pekka Rinne. ... Defenceman Tyler Myers missed Wednesdays practice because of the flu bug thats going around the team. Tippett expects him to be OK to play in the quarter-finals.
