Crawford wobbled Gamboa with a left and knocked him down with another left earlier in the ninth, then connected with a right to the chin at the 2:53 mark, prompting referee Gino Rodriguez to call the fight. As Rodriguez waved his arms, Crawford ran to a neutral corner and jumped on the shoulders of co-manager Brian McIntyre. "I hurt him plenty of times," Crawford said, "so when I hurt him the last time, I was looking to finish." The 26-year-old Crawford (24-0, 17 knockouts) was fighting in his hometown for the first time as a professional, and more than 10,000 showed up at the CenturyLink Center, many of them chanting "Craw-ford! Craw-ford!" throughout. "I imagined everybody screaming, supporting me," Crawford said. "It was everything I thought it was going to be." It was his first title defence since his 12-round unanimous decision over Ricky Burns in Glasgow, Scotland, in March. He said he plans to move up to junior welterweight after this fight. The 32-year-old Cuban-born Gamboa (23-1, 16 knockouts), a 2004 Olympic champion, was fighting for the first time in a year. Crawford took control in the middle rounds. When Crawford moved in, Gamboa used his superior speed to duck under him. Crawford landed a right to Gamboas cheek in the second round. As the fighters went into a clinch, Gamboa put a couple quick rights to the back of Crawfords head, drawing a warning from the referee. Gamboa landed a couple stinging shots in the third, but that he never was able to hurt Crawford. "He caught me with a good shot in the ninth, at the beginning," Crawford said. PHOENIX -- Add a dramatic ninth-inning moment to whats looking more and more like a breakout season for A.J. Pollock. The young centre fielder, in his second full big league season, hit a two-out, two-run homer on the first pitch he saw in the ninth to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 7-5 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday night. "We were standing there and we were saying Lets walk them off, lets walk them off," Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said, "and he crushed the ball." It was the first game-ending homer of Pollocks career. "A really cool feeling," Pollock said. "Thats what you do. You come in here every day and put a lot of swings in the cages and you work hard and its really cool when you actually get up there when the team needs you in late innings and be able to win a game." Pollock, hitless in his first 13 at-bats this season, went 3 for 5 to bring his season average to .296. In his last 26 games, Pollock is batting .341 (31 for 91) with five doubles, four homers and 11 RBIs. "Hes just super-talented," teammate Cody Ross said. "Hes got all the tools to be a great player and you can see that hes getting comfortable." With their fifth loss in seven games, the Padres are just 2 1/2 games ahead of last-place Arizona in the NL West. Cliff Pennington was hit by a pitch and pinch-hitter Eric Chavez hit into a fielders choice ahead of Pollocks soaring homer to centre off Kevin Quackenbush (0-1). Pollock said the pitch "was probably a little out of the zone, but I just wanted to be aggressive." Yonder Alonso homered and Everth Cabrera launched a three-run shot off Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy in the fifth inning to give San Diego a 4-2 lead. Martin Prado doubled in a run and singled for the Diamondbacks, just back from a 2-4 road trip and opening a seven-game home stand. Brad Ziegler (1-1) pitched two scoreless innings to get the win. "Great game, no doubt about that," Padres manager Bud Black said. "High intensity on both ends. We got back in the game after two nothing with a big inning. They bounced back, we bounced back with a home run. ... They got the last at-bat and put a good swing on a high fastball. " The Diamondbacks went up 2-0 in the second when Prado singled softly up the middle and Ross reached on a bloop hit to short right. With two outs, Pennington singled off third baseman Chase Headleys glove to bring in one run, and another scored when centre fielder Alexi Amarista didnt pick up the ball cleanly. McCarthy blanked the Padres through four, but just after the Chase Field roof opened Alonso hit the first pitch of the fifth inning into the swimming pool area in right. After two outs, Amarista and Tyson Ross singled, and Cabrera homered just inside the right field foul pole. Ross, San Diegos starter, couldnt hold the lead, facing five batters without an out in Arizonas three-run sixth. Pollock singled, then Gerardo Parra reached on a bunt. Paul Goldschmidt singled in a run, Miguel Montero singled home another and Prado barely missed a home run with a double into the cranny next to the Arizona bullpen, putting the Diamondbacks ahead 5-4 and ending Ross night. The lead didnt last long. McCarthy retired the first two in the seventh but was yanked after pinch-hitter Tommy Medica doubled. Lefty Joe Thatcher came on and allowed an RBI double to Cabrera and it was 5-5. Each manager challenged a call and both were rejected. Black challenged a call in the fourth when Seth Smith tried to stretch a double to a triple and was called out on an extremely close play. Gibson challenged a safe call on an attempted pickoff of Headley in the eighth. With two outs in the eighth Jedd Gyorko singled and was easily thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double. NOTES: The Diamondbacks said day-of-game ticket sales totalled 5,563, the largest at Chase since August 2008. ... In the second game of the series Tuesday, San Diego sends Eric Stults (2-5, 4.97 ERA) to the mound, while Arizona goes with Wade Miley (3-5, 4.85). ... The dust-up brought the cheering crowd at the Air Canada Centre to its feet and earned both players matching technical fouls. But even more, said Salmons, it said everything about this Toronto Raptors team. Theyre not afraid of anyone. Terrence Ross led the way with 24 points as the short-handed Raptors slayed another significant foe, defeating the Indiana Pacers 102-94. "Were not going to back down from anybody, were not going to quit, were going to be there, were going to fight," Salmons said. "Our leader (Kyle Lowry) hasnt been playing the last two games, but were still fighting. . . Were definitely not going to back down, were going to continue to fight." Jonas Valanciunas added 22 points and nine rebounds, while DeMar DeRozan scored 20 points and doled out nine assists for the Raptors (44-32), who claimed their fifth win in six starts despite missing starters Lowry and Amir Johnson. "We feel like we can beat anybody when we step out there on the court," said DeRozan. "Theyre a top team in the east, and thats a team that were fighting to be in their position. Tonight was a big game at this time of the season." Greivis Vasquez and Nando De Colo had 10 points apiece, while Patrick Patterson, who started in place of Johnson in only his third game since missing 11 with an elbow injury, had seven boards. Paul George had 26 points to top the Pacers (53-24), while David West added 21. "This is a playoff team," George said of Toronto. "Down the stretch they just got a lot of bounces that created second shots for them. If you give a playoff team another look or an opportunity they are going to knock you down." There was a definite post-season vibe to the Eastern Conference battle between two teams that could potentially meet in the second round of the playoffs. The Pacers had led the East all season until a recent slide saw them fall below the Miami Heat on percentage points. The playoff-bound Raptors are third in the conference. "Were a scrappy team, a scrappy grind-it-out team, so if one player goes down, we have other players that can come in, help us off the bench, give us that same spark," Ross said. "Thats how weve been winning games." It was see-saw battle for the first half before the Raptors cobbled together an 11-point lead in the third quarter, but it was short-lived as Indiana outscored Toronto 22-11 to send the game into the fourth tied 75-75. The Pacers went on a quick 7-0 run midway through the quarter to take a three-point lead, but the resilient Raptors responded with a run of their own, and when Valanciunas grabbed his own rebound and finished with a lovely hook shot, it put Toronto up 96-94 with three minutes to play. Valanciunas would score the next basket to mmake it a four-point lead, and the Raptors held fast on the defensive end the rest of the way, to the delight of the fans at Air Canada Centre, who were on their feet for the final few minutes.dddddddddddd When DeRozan stepped to the line to calmly drain two free throws with 13 seconds left, the crowd chanted "M-V-P!" It was the second straight game without Lowry, who has a bruised kneecap, and Johnson -- although Johnson did play three minutes in Wednesdays 107-103 win over Houston before leaving the game. Dressed smartly in a charcoal suit, Lowry could have been mistaken for one of the coaches and he hollered at teammates and gave instructions from the bench. "Id rather see Kyle in uniform than in street clothes and coaching. I told Kyle this all the time, that when he becomes a coach, I cannot wait to come watch his teams play," Raptors coach Dwane Casey said, laughing. "Im going to be that heckler in the stands Boo coach!" DeRozan added dryly: "(The coaching) was a little bit worse than he does when hes in the game with you, because he doesnt stop talking." The Raptors have six games to go in their quest for the Atlantic Division title, and their battle for a favourable opponent in the post-season. Theyre also on pace for their best regular-season record ever. Their most wins in a season is 47, set in 2000-01 and 2006-07. The good news: Indiana was the Raptors last opponent with a plus-.500 record. And of their remaining opponents, they play Milwaukee -- the leagues worst team -- twice, and Philadelphia (second worst) once. "(The division title) is important, (but) its not worth jeopardizing someones health," Casey said. "Weve got players who are nicked up, banged up, weve got to make sure theyre healthy and we cant run them into the ground at the sake of trying to win now." The Pacers have been struggling, losing three straight and five of six before a win over Detroit on Wednesday. Still, Casey wasnt about to take anything away from the Raptors win. "Its a win. Its a W. Whatever the deal is (with the Pacers), theyve won 53 games, thats the way I look at it," Casey said. "Its a quality win." Ross shot 4-for-4 for 10 points in an opening quarter that saw 10 lead changes and neither team lead by more than four. The Pacers took a 28-27 advantage into the second. The back-and-forth battle continued into the second before the Raptors took control with a 15-5 run, capped by a Valanciunas layup, to send Toronto into the dressing room with a 54-46 halftime lead. A three-point play by Valanciunas gave the Raptors their biggest lead of the game -- 11 points -- midway through the third, but Indiana buckled down on defence and it was all tied up with 12 minutes to play. NOTES: The Raptors are at Milwaukee on Saturday then get a much-needed three-day break before hosting Philadelphia on Wednesday. . . Ottawa Senators forward Clarke MacArthur is not expected to play in Mondays game against the Nashville Predators with a hand injury but could return for Saturdays matchup with the Montreal Canadiens. MacArthur suffered an injury to a tendon in his hand during a fight with Calgary Flames defenceman Chris Butler last Wednesday. The 28-year-old forward already missed Saturdays 5-3 victory over the Winnipeg Jets with the same injury. MacArthur has 19 goals and 25 assists in 62 games this season, his first with the Senators after spending the previous three years as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Josh Bailey had a goal and an assist as the New York Islanders earned a 2-1 win over Ottawa Wednesday, leaving the Senators five points out of a playoff spot with just five games to play and four teams ahead of them.NEW YORK – This was nothing new to the L.A. Kings. Time and time again in these playoffs, theyve stared adversity dead in the eye and come out on top. So when Justin Williams, holder of two Cups himself, looked around the dressing room at his teammates after 40 minutes of Game 2 – his team trailing by two goals for the fourth time in three games – he saw not doubt or fear of the Rangers snatching momentum of the 2014 Final, but belief - cold, hard belief. “Were not a team that wilts under the pressure,” said Williams, owner of 23 points in the playoffs. “Were a team that goes out and wants to make a difference and gets it. I feel thats a big reason why weve made it so far.” Three grueling series this spring, all stretched to the max opposite the very best the West had to offer, each dotted with varying threats to a second Cup in three years. But at every point along the way these Kings have found a little something extra – another gear, another goal, another save – unwavering in their ability to overcome a challenge, however tall or insurmountable it may seem. “Every series, every game, every year you play in the league you go through experiences that ultimately will help you in certain situations and I feel together as a team weve been through almost all them you could imagine and weve pulled through,” said Williams, who boasts 949 career NHL games, including 112 in the postseason. “So when were down do we feel comfortable? No, we dont feel comfortable, but we feel like were able to come back. “Belief is a very underrated attribute and we have that going on within our team right now.” It was another 2-0 pit at Staples Center on Saturday evening – the third such hole in as many games – just another obstacle for the Western Conference champs. But in familiar fashion (they did it against the Sharks, Ducks and Hawks) the silver and black forced their way back into the fold, ultimately dashing the Rangers hopes yet again in (double) overtime. Remarkably, the Kings have yet to lead at any point in regulation in the Final and still boast a commanding 2-0 series lead. “We find ourselves in the same situation regurgitating the same mumbo jumbo everry time, but were in a results oriented league and the results are were up 2-0,” said Williams.dddddddddddd “I dont care how we got here.” Another Cup, thus, appears close at hand for the 32-year-old and an always plucky bunch from southern California. Forty-eight teams have taken a 2-0 series lead in the Final since 1939 with all but five going on to capture the games top prize, including L.A. in 2012. But for whatever history might say the Kings know full well that theres plenty of game left, their own checkered track record in these playoffs the best proof of that. It was L.A. on the mat and apparently down for the count in round one against the Sharks – they rallied with four straight wins – and then seemingly in control against the Ducks in round two – they were up 2-0 in the series before losing three straight – before another dose of Game 7 magic was required. “Obviously momentums a huge part of playoff hockey and once a team has it its important to try to switch the tide in your favour as quick as possible,” said Dwight King from the teams hotel, sitting directly across from Central Park, his controversial third period goal timely in the 5-4 victory. “Teams dont make it this far out of luck,” Williams added. “Do we feel weve broken them? No, absolutely not. We should know that more than anybody; that its tough to put a team down. Especially when youre playing for the Stanley Cup its going to be hard to put a team down, but we need to try to step a little bit more on the throat tomorrow.” Finding their way to the borough of Manhattan on Sunday afternoon (after an early cross-country flight), the city buzzing with a flurry excitement at the Rangers first appearance in the Final in 20 years, the Kings exuded a quiet, knowing confidence, mindful of the improved start theyll need at MSG on Monday night and yet self-assured in their ability to handle whatever challenges Game 3 might throw their way. Williams knew what he saw of his teammates in that dressing room just a day earlier – “I saw a prepared team that knew what they had to do” – and he knows as well as anyone that more, much more will be needed in the days ahead. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Canadas Andrew Wiggins scored 30 points, Wayne Selden Jr. had 14 and No. 10 Kansas pulled away in the final seconds of overtime for a 77-70 victory over Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 tournament. Naadir Tharpe made four foul shots in the extra session to seal the victory for the top-seeded Jayhawks (24-8), who will face fourth-seeded Iowa State in Friday nights semifinals. The No. 16 Cyclones, behind a big game from Melvin Ejim, beat No. 5 seed Kansas State 91-85. Phil Forte briefly gave the Cowboys a 70-68 lead with a 3-pointer a minute into overtime, but the Jayhawks scored the final seven points, all but two of them coming at the foul line. LeBryan Nash scored 19 points to lead the Cowboys (21-12). Forte added 16 points and Marcus Smart finished with 14, though he missed all three of his shots in the extra session. Both teams had chances to earn the win in regulation. Wiggins, from Vaughan, Ont., hit a baseline jumper with a minute left to knot it 67, but Cowboys coach Travis Ford decided against going 2-for-1 on possessions, and Smart missed a 3 with 32 seconds left. The Jayhawks got the rebound and called timeout with 16 seconds left to set up a play for Wiggins, and he missed a tightly guarded 3 with a few ticks left on the lock. Tarik Black gathered in the rebound and stuck it back, but the basket came after time had expired. Black got extended minutes in place of Joel Embiid, the Jayhawks 7-foot freshman centre, who has been ruled out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his back. The senior transfer finished with seven ppoints and 12 rebounds, including a couple with the game in the balance.dddddddddddd The Cowboys, who had to play a matinee after dispatching Texas Tech on Wednesday night, didnt look as if they were weary in the first half. They actually pulled out to an early lead, silencing a heavily pro-Kansas crowd that had packed inside the Sprint Center. Kansas responded by taking a 32-23 lead into halftime, and then maintained its advantage early in the second half. But once Black and fellow forward Perry Ellis picked up their fourth fouls, the Cowboys started shredding the Kansas defence by driving the lane. Smart proved to be the most adept at it, picking up fouls when he wasnt hammered on the way to the rim. But just about everyone wearing black and orange got into the act, and Oklahoma State methodically trimmed the lead to 55-49 with about 8 minutes to go. Thats when Cowboys coach Travis Ford changed things up by slapping on a full-court press. It produced two quick turnovers and helped Oklahoma State take a 60-59 lead with 4 minutes left. It was the Cowboys first lead since the 12-minute mark in the first half. The two teams, who each won on their home floor during the regular season, traded blows down the stretch. Selden made a couple free throws for Kansas, Forte answered with two from the foul line for Oklahoma State. Black and Wiggins threw down alley-oop dunks for the Jayhawks, and Murphy hit a pair of free throws and Markel Brown hit a rainbow 3 to give the Cowboys the lead. It just made sense that such a nip-and-tuck game would be decided in overtime. IRVING, Texas -- Free agent linebacker Will Herring isnt joining the Dallas Cowboys after all. The team reported the signing on its website Thursday, but said Friday the deal was off in "a mutual parting of the ways that had to do with the language of the contract." Herring figured to be a prominent part of special teams for the Cowboys after the eighth-year player excelled in that role for New Orleans. The 30-year-old Herring was with Seattle his first four years in the league before spending the past three seasons with the Saints. Hes made 10 starts in 97 career games. Dale Weise Jersey . In his first official practice round at Augusta National, Graham DeLaet got in a great cram session, playing 18 holes alongside Mike Weir. As they walked off the first tee, Weir opened his book of course knowledge to his fellow Canadian, telling him to ask him about anything and everything. For the next four hours, the two talked about the humps and bumps and hills and swales of the famed course, with DeLaet trying to drink in as much information as he could ahead of Thursdays opening round. "It was nice to have Mike kind of showing me around," said DeLaet. "He was giving me guidance on a few things that other players had given him, guys like Jack (Nicklaus) and Freddy (Couples) and stuff along the way. Thats one of the cool things out here that guys kind of pass things along. You go to a regular tournament and guys kind of keep things secretive. But for whatever reason, out here you just kind of pass the torch along. Any time I asked, he was more than happy to point out a few things along the way I wouldnt have known about." And few people know the course better than Mike Weir, who is making his 15th start here this week. However, the 2003 champion cautioned DeLaet that many of his references were specific for his game, not the long-bombing power style that the Weyburn, Sask., native plays. "I wasnt overloading him because our games are so different," said Weir, who thrilled fans by jarring in his tee shot on the 16th hole during the round. "He has more power, hitting shorter irons into greens, while Im probably playing more for position. He can be more aggressive. I told him to be mindful of that. Im telling him out how I play it because Im back there hitting a four-iron." For DeLaet, the chance to play at Augusta National with Weir was more than an exercise in local knowledge, it was also the chance to play with one of his golfing idols. In 2007, when he teed it up in the Canadian Open for the first time, DeLaet managed to get his picture taken with the lefthanded star. Its a picture he keeps hanging on his wall at home to this day. "He was the guy I looked to when I was a kid," admitted DeLaet. "Now I call him my friend. Going around here, the respect he gets from the crowd – and rightfully so – is pretty cool." Now DeLaet has to take all the information and put it to use. His caddy, Julien Trudeau – who also raved about the details Weir passed on – said he and his boss will sit down and formulate a game plan for their opening round. That game plan will also try to take into account the butterflies that will undoubtedly be in DeLaets stomach when he gets set to start his first Masters. "I know that Im going to be nervous, Im nervous at the Byron Nelson tournament," he stated. "I do have a couple of majors under my belt now which is going to help a little bit but I dont know exactly what Im going to feel like on (the first tee) on Thursday but Im looking forward to it." Millers Crossing Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News writes that netminder Ryan Miller is unsure about his future with the Sabres. Heading into Wednesdays game against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Miller said, "anything is possible" when pondering if it was his last game in Buffalo. Asked point-blank by The Buffalo News if hes told the Sabres he wants out - or told them hes all-in to talk about a contract extension - Miller remained elusive. "Thats not really something I want to discuss with you guys," he said. "Its a private conversation about a business transaction. Really, thats what it comes down to. Im waiting to see kind of what the plans are around here. That would kind of give a little more indication. "They cant execute anything they might be planning until some time passes, where they make some trades or they have some kind of indication whats going to happen. Even then, theres no guarantee theyre going to get everything they want. Its just kind of well wait and see." Harrington also wrote that Sabres GM Tim Murray pretty much confirmed that hes in limbo on dealing Miller as well. Murray said the Sabres are studying options all over their roster but the scuttlebutt around the league is theyre getting plenty of inquiries on pending unrestricted free agents Miller, Steve Ott and Matt Moulson, as well as interest in defenceman Henrik Tallinder. "Theree are players on the team were certainly going to go forward with, young guys that they fit what we want to do," Murray said.dddddddddddd "In saying that, if a team calls and they absolutely knock your socks off, then I guess Ive told a fib by saying were going to go forward with a certain player and Ive traded him. It doesnt look right, but thats my motto. Im willing to listen on every single player, so Im certainly listening on Ryan. Is that our plan? I guess well see what other teams have to say." Moving Mike? While TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie reported Tuesday on Twitter that the Calgary Flames and Mike Cammalleri are "continuing dialogue on new contract," Wes Gilbertson of The Calgary Sun says it would be a surprise if the clubs highest-paid player wasnt moved before the deadline. Staying Focused Derek Van Diest of The Edmonton Sun writes that Oilers centre Sam Gagner is focused on helping Edmonton win games rather than trade speculation. "Its something where you try and block it out," Gagner said. "I think its an easier thing to do the further you are from the trade deadline, but as it creeps up, its sometimes hard. I think its important just to focus on your game. I have some things that I need to continue to get better at, and thats something that Im trying to focus on right now, trying to help this team win games, and hopefully, I can do that heading towards the stretch here." Deep Freeze Joe Haggerty of Comcast Sportsnet tweeted out that Boston Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has had trade talks but doesnt see them making any deals before the Olympic roster freeze. Gasol had 23 points and 13 rebounds as the Chicago Bulls routed the Los Angeles Lakers 113-93 on Christmas Day. Gasol signed with the Bulls during the offseason after spending his previous six-plus seasons with the Lakers, winning a pair of NBA titles. It was weird, difficult at first to get going, Gasol admitted. Once you start playing, youre just playing the best game you can. The 36-year-old Bryant cited old age and sore knees as his reasons for sitting out Thursday nights game against Chicago during a pregame session with reporters. The team is struggling right now and its difficult to see him struggle, Gasol said of Bryant and the Lakers. The game in LA will probably be a little more emotional than this one. Gasol will return to Staples Center to play the Lakers on Jan. 29. Jimmy Butler posted 21 points, six rebounds and five assists, while Derrick Rose added 20 points and six assists for Chicago, which has won five straight and eight of its last nine games. Wesley Johnson supplied 19 points and nine boards and Ed Davis provided 13 points and 14 rebounds for the Lakers, who have dropped four of their last five contests. Butlers turnaround fadeaway in the waning seconds of tthe first half staked Chicago to a 58-47 halftime advantage, but an 11-2 Lakers run to start the second half got them within a basket.dddddddddddd Jordan Hill had six points during the surge, which was capped on a Johnson layup to trim the margin to 60-58. The Bulls pulled away during the latter stages of the third and early portion of the fourth with an 11-3 burst. Taj Gibson split a pair of foul shots to finish off the swing and give the Bulls a 92-80 spread. Chicago cruised to the easy win from there. Earlier, the Bulls led 27-24 following a quarter of play and outscored LA 31-23 in the second. It was also the first game for Carlos Boozer in a Lakers uniform playing against his former team. Boozer, who was claimed off waivers by the Lakers in July, had played the previous four seasons for Chicago. He had 14 points off the bench. At some point you have to put the emotions and feelings aside, go out there and win a basketball game, Boozer said. They came in waves. BALTIMORE -- Aaron Sanchez is playing a vital role in Torontos march to the postseason.Nonetheless, the organization has made the extra effort to keep their young pitcher fresh. Sanchez took full advantage of that strategy with another dominant performance Wednesday night.Jose Bautista homered on the games first pitch and Russell Martin went deep four batters later in support of Sanchez, leading the Blue Jays to a 5-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.Toronto took two of the three games in the pivotal American League East series. The fading Orioles are four games behind the first-place Blue Jays and are tied with Detroit for the second wild card spot. Its never easy when you play these guys, Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. He spent 10 days in the minors to limit his innings and he took advantage of the extra rest. Sanchez allowed an unearned run and five hits with two strikeouts over six innings and a season-high 112 pitches.I felt like my body had been bouncing back pretty well all year, Sanchez said. The Orioles pulled within 3-1 in the fifth when third baseman Josh Donaldson couldnt handle a sharp grounder by Manny Machado.I feel like Im still seeing the ball well, said Martin, who had nine homers and 22 RBI in August. Sometimes you get a mistake and you hit it and sometimes the pitcher makes pitches and you get out. For the most part, I just feel like Im having good at-bats.After allowing the two homers, Gallardo (4-7) settled down and retired the final 10 batters he faced. He allowed three runs and five hits with three strikeouts over six innings. He pitched well I thought for the most part, Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. He gave us a chance to win. Larry Scott hits the first half of Stanfords game against Southern California before bouncing over to Berkeley for game two of his Saturday doubleheader.California is hosting Texas and that game goes full (hash)Pac12AfterDark, running late into the night. That doesnt keep Scott from looking fresh and business casual the next day for an early breakfast at the top of Nob Hill in San Francisco. After that, another business meeting, and then back to Berkeley for a Harvard-Cal mens soccer before finally relaxing at his 14-year-old sons soccer match.Scott always seems to be on to the next thing. In eight years as commissioner of the Pac-12, Scott has modernized and expanded a conference that had fallen far behind its competitors. With a $3 billion television contract and its own network, the Pac-12 has been transformed under Scott. But what now?The TV contract that once set records will be dwarfed by the Big Tens new deal. The Pac-12 Network has not been the cash cow some expected to help the conference close the revenue gap between it and the Big Ten and Southeastern Conference.Scott thinks long-term. He sees cord-cutting sports consumers and potential new markets in Asia. But on Pac-12 campuses, there are more immediate concerns for athletic directors who are trying to fill stadiums for all those night football games the conference plays and keep their coaches from being poached by other Power Five schools. The conflict between the two has created some tension in the Pac-12 and some doubters in Scott.I think in our conference weve got to leverage the strengths we have on the West Coast, which is partly about innovation. Partly about being progressive. Partly about taking some risks, trying some things differently, because we dont have and wont have the same size fan bases and the same size markets as those were trying to compete with. Plus, the time zone, Scott said in a recent interview with The Associated Press. The biggest, riskiest play for Scott is the Pac-12 Network. The conference owns and operates the network, unlike the Big Ten, which partners with Fox on its network and the SEC, which partners with ESPN. Going it alone has limited the Pac-12 Networks reach and earning potential. With the support of large and vocal fan bases who threatened to drop providers that would not carry their networks, the Big Ten and SEC were able to land deals with all the biggest cable and satellite TV providers. Those deals have been far more difficult for the Pac-12 Network to secure. Most notably, DirecTV does not carry the Pac-12 Network.According to a letter sent earlier this year from Washington State athletic director Bill Moos to boosters, Pac-12 schools received a $1.4 million payout from the network last year. Moos said in the letter, which was reported on by the Seattle Times, that Washington State was expecting $5 to $6 million.Still, Scott calls the network, which airs on more events (850) than BTN or the SEC Network, Absolutely a success.Theres definitely room for it to be a bigger success, Scott said.Whats changing is people are watching less on their TVs, streaming programming through mobile devices and bypassing cable and satellite providers. The Pac-12s TV contract with ESPN and Fox runs through 2024 and gives those networks control of the conferences first- and second-tier media rights, which include most of the conferences best football and basketball games. Third-tier rights, essentially everything else, are owned by the schools and the Pac-12.Scott believes that sets up the Pac-12 to capitalize on a changing market in which maybe DirecTV is less relevant and Facebook, Amazon and Twitter are major players. The Pac-12 announced a deal earlier this year to stream Olympic sports on Twitter. It also signed a deal with Sling TV, which allows users to access television networks without a cable or satellite pprovider.ddddddddddddcott hopes the DirecTV issue can be resolved. But the world is changing very rapidly and there will be plenty of other options, he said. The Pac-12 distributed to its members about $25 million each for 2015. That payout is about $7 million short of what the SEC and Big Ten paid each of its members and even below the Big 12s record $30 million payout.Scott, who made $4 million last year to make him the highest-paid college conference commissioner, said the revenue gap is an issue for the Pac-12, but as with most things he likes to pull back the lens. The thing thats often overlooked if you look at the typical athletics department budget for any particular school, the percentage of revenue that comes from the conference can range anywhere from 20 percent to 35 percent, Scott said. The ability for schools to compete has got a lot more to do with their market and what theyre able to do locally than what happens through the conference, but whenever theres a dialogue about it its always what the conferences are doing.According to financial records gathered by USA Today, there are 31 public schools that generated at least $90 million in athletic revenue in 2015. Only three (Oregon, Washington and UCLA) are from the Pac-12.When Scott was hired away from the Womens Tennis Association -- where he was CEO -- by the then-Pac-10, part of his mandate was to engage the presidents and chancellors and create a strong board of directors. In the process, Scott acknowledges, he was not as attentive to the lines of communication with athletic directors. Some of the strain played out publicly earlier this year when Scott called out UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero for how he used the Pac-12s vote when the NCAA council was sorting through how to regulate so-called satellite football camps.Scott said he has made an effort to keep ADs more involved, setting up dinner meetings with them before the presidents meet. ADs now receive the agendas of the presidents meetings with the commissioner. The AP made interview requests to all Pac-12 athletic directors other than USCs Lynn Swann, who has been in the job for less than a year. Some declined and others said they were unavailable. The three athletic directors who spoke to the AP, Oregons Rob Mullens, Arizona States Ray Anderson and Moos, voiced support for Scott and his vision for the conference. They also acknowledged their opinions are not necessarily shared by all of their colleagues. It is important to remember where this conference was, Mullens said.Under Scotts predecessor, Tom Hansen, few Pac-12 football games were nationally televised. TV revenue was paltry compared to other major conferences and it was not shared equally. The teams that were on TV most made the most. The trade-off to get the game-changing money and more exposure was more Pac-12 football games being played at night, including Thursday and Friday nights.Fans complain about night kickoffs and they can hurt attendance, but playing in the Pacific time zone allows ESPN and Fox to use Pac-12 games to fill late time slots. We were all made aware of this when we negotiated those television deals, Moos said. Youre really not going to be able to command $3 billion for the conference by everybody playing in a 1:30 window on a Saturday afternoon for their football games.Anderson, who is in his third year at Arizona State after working as a vice president in the NFL, said he fully endorses Scotts strategy with the network.Become more of the way that consumers are getting our sports and, boom, maybe the landscape changes and were now in a better position to start helping to reduce that (revenue) gap, Anderson said.---Follow Ralph D. CHICAGO -- Chicago Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman should have help on the way in the form of a new translator after a rocky start with local reporters. On Thursday, manager Joe Maddon said the Cubs were weighing their options to make the transition for Chapman more seamless. The Cuban doesnt speak English. Its difficult where we really havent built a relationship with this guy, Maddon said before a 3-1 win over the?Chicago White Sox, in which Chapman recorded the final four outs to post his first save with the Cubs. I know there?has been some reticence or pushback regarding him to this point; however, understand where hes coming from right now. He doesnt know us, and he really doesnt know the language, so my best advice is to continue to build a relationship.Chapman and Cubs interpreter/coach Henry Blanco came under criticism Monday after the pitcher flubbed his introductory news conference with Chicago reeporters.ddddddddddddhen the next day, he initially refused to speak with the media after his debut on the mound with his new team. Chapman eventually relented; catcher Miguel Montero?translated for him. Now the Cubs plan on bringing in someone Chapman is more familiar with.Im trying to build a relationship with this guy so he starts trusting me, Maddon said. I believe when that occurs, Im going to understand what hes about and what hes thinking. It will probably be better as we all develop better relationships with him; the conversation is going to flow a lot more easily. To put myself in his shoes, to come into a new venue, new city, new everything, its a pretty heavy moment. To immediately be scrutinized, as he was, I can almost understand why its been difficult for him. LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Louisville used a big start to the second half to break away Saturday.Asia Durr scored a career-high 34 points in less than three quarters and No. 5 Louisville beat Bowling Green 83-58 in the first game of the Basketball Hall of Fame Challenge. The Cardinals (4-0) used an 18-2 run over the first 2:36 of the second half to break it open. Durr, a sophomore guard, scored the first 13 points herself to make it 49-27 with 8:29 left in the third quarter.Every time we came down the court, they were trying to find me, the 5-foot-10 Durr said. I knocked them down. I was thankful for that. Some poor first-half shooting by Louisville, which made just 5 of 21 shots in the second quarter, allowed the Falcons to stay close throughout the first half. But when Louisville went on its run in the third, Bowling Green helped by committing 14 of its 32 turnovers during the quarter.Durr, who came to Louisville as the top-rated recruit in her class and won Parade Magazines High School Player of the Year award in 2015, went 8 of 13 from 3-point range to top her previous career high of seven. She left the game with 4:30 to go in the third quarter. Her previous scoring best was 24 points, which came in the season opener at Tennessee-Martin.At this time last season, Durr was experiencing pain after going through surgery to repair a torn groin muscle. The pain was so bad that it limited her game, and Louisville coaches considered redshirting her.Its amazing to watch just from last year and to see how shes playing right now, forward Myisha Hines-Allen said. Shes grown so much with her confidence. I knew she was a great player already, but just to see this -- actually playing with her on the court -- is amazing. Not everything went well though for Louisville. The Cardinals lost the rebounding battle 40-39 and allowed 11 offensive boards in the second half. Thats an issue of concern for coach Jeff Walz. When we start playing some teams that have some size to them, its going to be a long night, he said.Clare Glowniak led the Falcons (0-3) with 11 points.Hines-Allen added 13 for Louisville, which shot 45.5 percent, compared with Bowling Greens 35.2 percent.BIG PICTURELouisville: The margin could have been a lot wider, but coach Jeff Walz chose to use his bench heavily to save his starters for the next two days, when they play two more games as part of the challenge.Bowling Green: For the second straight contest, a big run haunted the Falcons, who let a fourth-quarter lead disappear against Cincinnati on Tuesday.SHE SAID ITWe played an elite level team today that can rebound at the elite level, that can press at an elite level. This is a team thats going to go to the Final Four. -- Bowling Green coach Jennifer Roos.LETDOWNAfter making 9 of 14 shots and scoring 27 in a 91-72 win at Middle Tennessee Wednesday, Mariya Moore struggled. The junior forward made just 1 of 9 Saturday, but she still found other ways to contribute as she posted a team-best six assists.POLL IMPLICATIONSDespite some early shooting woes, Louisville came out on fire in the third quarter and put the Falcons away as expected. As long as the Cardinals dont experience any hiccups later on this weekend, their ranking should remain the same.UP NEXTLouisville hosts Lafayette on Sunday.Bowling Green plays Chattanooga on Sunday in Louisville. Magee tied the score in the 23rd minute with his fifth goal in five matches -- three in MLS play and two in the U.S. Open Cup. The goal was set up by Rapids defender Marvell Wynnes hand ball in the penalty area. Magee converted with a right-footed kick that beat goalkeeper Clint Irwin to his left. Berry got the winning score in the second minute after halftime for the Fire (4-7-3). Chicago captain Jeff Larentowicz fed the ball in from outside the penalty area, and Berry was open in the right crease for the header, his first goal of the season. Jamie Castrilllon opened the scoring when he stripped the ball from Berry in Chicagos half of the field and scored on goalkeeper Sean Johnson on a 22-yard blast in the 17th minute to put Colorado (5-6-5) ahead.dddddddddddd The Rapids lost their second straight and extended their winless stretch to 0-2-1. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. -- First Karlos Williams was out of shape. Now hes out of a job after the Buffalo Bills released the backup running back on Saturday. He came in behind the eight ball and never caught up, and there were other guys on the roster who moved ahead of him, general manager Doug Whaley said. In light of that, we thought, `Why hold onto him?The Bills announced Williams was released hours before their preseason game against the New York Giants. The move comes five days after Williams was cleared for practice. He missed the first two weeks of training camp while working with the teams training staff on getting into shape.Williams conditioning issues first came to light in June, when he was overweight reporting to the teams mandatory minicamps. He blamed his extra bulk on being empathetic to his fiance and not wanting her to snack alone during her pregnancy.Conditioning wasnt Williams only issue. Last month, the NFL suspended him for the first four games of the season for violating the leagues substance abuse policy.Whaley said the team concluded that Williams wouldnt be ready to play even after serving the suspension. He was so far out of reach for his goal that it was going to take a lot of time for him to get to where he needed to be, Whaley said. His departure happened almost as quickly as his ascension last year during his rookie season.Williams was considered a project when Buffalo drafted him in the fifth round out of Florida State. At 6-foot-1 and 230 pounds, he had the combination of size and speed to play running back. What he lacked was experience at the position after making the switch from safety during the 2013 season.Williams immediately dispelled any questions by becoming the second NFL player to score touchdowns in his first six games -- and at a time when starter LeSean McCoy was hampered by a hamstring injury. He finished with 517 yards rushing and scored nine touchdowns, including two receiving. The Bills have depth at running back, in part because of the addition of Reggie Bush two weeks ago. Buffalo selected Jonathan Williams in the fifth round and also re-signed Mike Gillislee, who had 267 yards rushing and scored three times last year.Williams was cut the same day that Bills star defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, also suspended for the first four games of the season for violating the leagues substance abuse policy, announced that he would enter a rehabilitation facility.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and AP NFL Twitter feed: http://twitter.com/AP-NFL Wholesale NFL Jerseys . 8 Iowa State on Saturday, sending the Cyclones to their third consecutive loss. DEL MAR, Calif. - Everything came together for Shes Not Here late on Saturday afternoon. An hour before the $201,035 Yellow Ribbon Stakes at Del Mar, jockey Drayden Van Dyke and trainer Phil Oliver had a phone conversation about the best way for Van Dyke to ride Shes Not Here in the Grade 2 turf race for fillies and mares at 1-1/16 miles. He said, Let her break and get fourth or fifth, get her to relax, and shell give you a kick, Van Dyke said. The tactics proved ideal when Shes Not Here closed from fourth in a field of eight to win the Yellow Ribbon for the second consecutive year.It went perfect, Van Dyke said.Shes Not Here ($20.40) was timed in 1:42.70. The win ended a five-race losing streak, all in graded stakes in California, Illinois, and Kentucky, since the 2015 Yellow Ribbon for Shes Not Here.During that span, Shes Not Here kept good company. She was seventh behind Tepin in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley Stakes at Keeneland in April, and sixth behind that mare in the Grade 2 Distaff Turf Mile at Churchill Downs on May 7. Tepin won the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot last month.Shes Not Here, who races for Ian Banwell and G. Watts Humphrey Jr., was the sixth choice in the Yellow Ribbon. Van Dyke had her in fourth on the backstretch, following pacesetter Her Emmynency, who set a modest pace of 24.dddddddddddd21 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 48.74 for a half-mile.Shes Not Here took the lead before the eighth pole, and finished a neck in front of 18-1 Fresh Feline. The Yellow Ribbon was the first start for Fresh Feline since a third-place finish in the Grade 2 Santa Ana Stakes at Santa Anita in late March. The narrow loss was frustrating for Victor Espinoza. She ran super and shed been off for a while, Espinoza said of Fresh Feline. Maybe with a couple more jumps I could have gotten there.Nancy From Nairobi, the 2-1 favorite, closed from last to finish third, followed by Finest City, Queen of the Sand, Keri Belle, Prize Exhibit, and Her Emmynency. Her Emmynency tailed off in the stretch when beaten, a loss that left owner Ike Thrash stunned. Her Emmynency won the Grade 1 Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland last October. She was going easy and when they came to her, she shut down, Thrash said. I dont what that was. That was the opposite of what I expected.Shes Not Here, a 5-year-old mare by Street Cry, has won 6 of 22 starts and earned $403,903. He might be on the cusp of owning the worst start ever as a Manly coach, but Trent Barrett has been credited for keeping the Sea Eagles from falling apart this NRL season.Barrett currently sits alongside former Manly mentors Des Hasler (2004), Wally OConnell (1950) and Tony Paskins (1963) to have just four wins from their first 15 games in charge of the club. However there is some hope for the rookie coach, with Hasler going on to claim two premierships in the eight seasons under his guidance, even if the first trophy didnt come until 2008.Ahead of Mondays clash against St George Illawarra, Sea Eagles star Daly Cherry-Evans said Barrett has endured a difficult introduction to coaching but has played a big role in keeping the team united. The situations hes been put in as a rookie coach is nothing short of unbelievable, Cherry-Evans said. But I cant fault the man in his resilience and his character, the way hes been able to keep us together as a playing group. Its quite easy in situations like this for playing groups to split. The 14th-placed Sea Eagles face off against the 10th-placed Dragons, a club where Barrett failed to bring his own premiership as a player despite being in one of the strongest sides of that era.Dragons coach Paul McGregor, who goes head-to-head in the coaching box against a former teammate for the third time in as many weeks, felt for the under-fire Barrett.Baz has had a pretty tough first year. His side was benchmarked to be a top four side and it hasnt worked out that way, McGregor said.Hed be doing it tough but hed be committed, working hard towards improving.Barrett has named an unchanged line-up that almost upset North Queensland in Townsville last week, although there are question marks surrounding the availability of veteran No.1 Brett Stewart. For the Dragons, who can catapult into the top eight with a win, mid-season recruit Tariq Sims returns after sitting out last weeks win over Newcastle.STATS THAT MATTER* Manly have defeated St George Illawarra just eight times in 23 matches, their worst record against any team in history.* The Dragons have an awful recent record in Monday night football, winning just twice in 17 games since late 2011, including losing their past six.* Brett Stewart is currently in a 10-game try-less drought, easily the longest of his 14-year career. china jerseys nhl . NEW YORK -- Marissa Janning and Creighton are in an unfamiliar position: favorites to win the Big East Conference. The Bluejays return all five starters from last season, as well as Janning, who broke her left leg in November. Even without their star guard, they made it to the conference title game as a seven seed.It shows the respect for what we did last year, Janning said of her team being the top choice. We persevered last year and have a bunch of fighters. Its really exciting and could be a special year for us.Janning was happy to be back on the court herself after breaking the fibula in her leg on Nov. 28.Im so excited. Ive been waiting, and Ive been ready and wish we could play a game right now, the fifth-year senior said.Creighton and DePaul were the coaches picks to win the conference. Its the first time in 14 years theres been a tie atop the leagues preseason poll, which was released Tuesday. Each school received five first-place votes. The Blue Demons already have taken a hit, losing Marte Grays for the season with an Achilles injury suffered last month. They do have guard Jessica January, who was picked as the conferences player of the year, and return two other starters from last seasons team, wwhich made a run to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament.ddddddddddddIts an awesome achievement and gives us a lot of confidence for the season, January said of the top ranking.Marquette is third in the poll.
