CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians six-game winning streak ended on a night when they willingly used eight pitchers.Alex Bregman hit a two-run homer and scored twice in the first three innings as the Houston Astros cruised to a 6-2 victory Monday. The Indians lead in the American League Central was cut to 4 1/2 games over Detroit as manager Terry Francona opted to utilize his bullpen, rather than having Josh Tomlin take his regular turn in the rotation. If you ask me about every pitcher, well be here all night, Francona deadpanned. We went out and kind of pieced it together, and I thought the guys did a pretty good job. But well talk it over and see which way well go the next time around.Right-hander Mike Clevinger (2-2) started and allowed one run in 1 2/3 innings, while Jeff Manship entered next and allowed Bregmans blast with no outs in the third to give Houston a 3-0 lead.Perci Garner, Joe Colon, Dan Otero, Bryan Shaw, and Cody Anderson followed before Tomlin tossed a scoreless ninth.I thought we put it together pretty well, especially with guys coming in earlier than theyre used to, said Clevinger, whose previous five appearances were in relief. I was just trying to stay in the same mindset of being aggressive and attacking.Mike Napoli hit a two-run homer and Francisco Lindor went 2 for 3 for Cleveland, which had its seven-game winning streak at Progressive Field snapped.Napolis shot was his 30th of the season, marking the first time an Indian reached the mark since Grady Sizemore in 2008. It also broke a season-long 21-game homerless drought for the veteran slugger.Weve all seen that Nap can hit them in bunches, so hopefully were about to enter another stretch like that, Francona said.Astros right-hander Mike Fiers (10-6) gave up two runs in five innings. Cleveland failed to get a hit off four relievers over the final four innings.Second baseman Jason Kipnis committed two errors for the Indians, including one on a grounder in the eighth that led to two unearned runs off Shaw.Tomlin finished the game with his first appearance out of the bullpen since Sept. 19, 2014. He went 0-5 with an 11.47 ERA in six August starts, prompting Francona and pitching coach Mickey Callaway to take their unusual approach against Houston.I was glad we got Josh in there, and Im very glad that we got a clean inning out of it, Francona said. Tonight wasnt like it would be in the beginning of the year, where youre putting your bullpen at risk. We wouldnt have done it if we didnt have the expanded roster, and I thought the guys did a pretty good job.SCRATCH THATThe scheduled Tuesday matchup between the last two AL Cy Young Award winners was scrapped because Astros LHP Dallas Keuchel was sent back to Houston with shoulder inflammation. Keuchel, the 2014 winner, will not face Indians RHP Corey Kluber, who earned the award in 2013.UP NEXTAstros: RHP Brad Peacock will be recalled from Triple-A Fresno. He has made five relief appearances for Houston this year, posting a 3.86 ERA over seven innings.Indians: Kluber logged his shortest start of the season against the Astros, allowing five runs in 2 2/3 innings in a 7-1 loss on May 9 in Cleveland. Barcelona also left injured defenders Carles Puyol, Javier Mascherano and Jordi Alba out of its squad for the trip to Glasgow. That means that Marc Bartra will probably start again in the centre of the defence alongside Gerard Pique. Jorge Guzman Jersey . -- There were so many positives from the Orlando Magics first victory of the season that it was hard for coach Jacque Vaughn to stop praising his players. At an optional practice session on Friday, Ravindra Jadeja took first strike against the spinners. He treated them with roughly the same kindness Daffy Duck is used to.Considering how all their best-laid plans backfired - tossed-up deliveries were biffed straight, quicker ones cut away and even the good-length balls were turned into half-volleys and dispatched - it was entirely disappointing that none of the bowlers accused Jadeja of being dithpicable. Then a 46-year-old man took the ball and bounded up to the crease. Oh boy. Where was this going to go? Slog-sweep to midwicket? Over the training area at the back and into main ground?Jadeja planted his front foot forward, but realised he couldnt reach the pitch and was forced to defend. Eight years after his retirement, it still wasnt easy to play Anil Kumble. The sequence continued. Jadeja attacked the rest, but he had to be watchful against his coach, slowly building up to a back-foot punch along the ground through the covers. Kumble had basically grabbed Jadeja by the ear and led him into a tutorial on how to play quality spin. Not that he is a bad one, mind you. Jadeja plays a lot of his first-class cricket on rank turners. He had been one of Indias most important contributors in the last home season, when they played on pitches that spun from day one. His lower-order runs against South Africa were often vital in securing leads. Now he was in Mohali again - scene of his Man-of-the-Match winning comeback from a shoulder injury. It was here also that Virat Kohli admitted to the teams problems against slow bowling, after they lost four wickets to the genial left-arm spin of Dean Elgar. Before that they had lost a Test to the genius left-arm spin of Rangana Herath.Kohli took pains to say the issue wasnt technical. He felt India were giving away too many wickets in clumps. He would be pleased to know, then, that only one of Englands three slow bowlers - Adil Rashid - has a strike-rate under 50 on this tour.Kohli himself has played a big part in that. He has read them out of the hand, tried to play late and off the back foot, trusting the slowness of the pitches and the quickness of his wrists. Even balls that stay low havent been spared from his wrath and barring the time he was hit-wicket in Rajkot, his methods have been flawless. His stats against spin from this series are: 83 singles, 19 twos, one threes and 15 fours that make up 185 runs in 332 deliveries.Cheteshwar Pujara has been even better. He has been collecting four runs per over of spin and averages 163 against it. A lot of those numbers are a resullt of his confidence in playing a spinner.dddddddddddd He loves coming down the track, so much that he wouldnt think twice about doing so for a whole over. He did so quite early against Kumble in the nets on Friday, unleashing an on-drive against the turn, all along the ground. And hes no slouch on the back foot either, as the bowler finds out when he makes the adjustment and flattens his trajectory. It is because of his vast range of shots versus spin that Pujara is often happy to defend or take blows from the fast bowlers. He knows he can prosper later.M Vijay is quite similar, only he takes the aerial route, and tends not to give any warning of those intentions. His hundred in Rajkot was replete with such shots that caught the slow bowler off guard. R Ashwin has become a rock-solid No. 6 at home and he has tackled spin off the back foot with the late cut as his cheat code. None of these strengths are new though. They are just being used a little better and some of the credit for that must go to Kumble. India were bound to improve their batting on turning pitches with one of the greatest spinners in the history of the game in charge. The one area that they clearly have done better is in making sure they are set before dominating a spinner. Moeen Ali, at home in 2014, got a lot of wickets with the Indians going after him blindly. This time, he has been made to work a lot harder because Kohli and company have learnt to rate him better. Not taking anything away from Moeen, I think he is a pretty terrific bowler, Kohli said. He makes an impact in England as well, so he understands which lines and lengths to bowl, what speed to bowl at. Even Adil, I payed against him at the Under-19 level and I told him in Rajkot I was surprised he didnt make it to the England squad in the next two years. When we played back in 2006 he was that good even then.So we understand the quality these guys bring to the table for England. Not everyone plays for England in Test matches. We respect that but at the same time, we understand and we believe that we are good enough to counter that. You saw in Rajkot, they put us under pressure with their quality and we respect that and we are still going to find ways to keep countering what they throw at us.The surfaces India have played on this season have been considerably less extreme and that helped the batsmen as well. But the self-belief that Indias captain spoke about may just have a lot more to do with it. ' ' '

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- With Kobe Bryant retired after two decades in purple and gold, the Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new and somewhat uncertain era featuring a first-year head coach and a roster built around several promising young players. And as the illustrious franchise seeks to reclaim its place among the NBAs elite after three straight seasons of missing the playoffs, and after posting their worst record ever last season, the Lakers looked ahead Wednesday to one of the most exciting, and certain, elements of their future: their state-of-the-art $80 million training complex.Standing before the imposing shell of a two-story, 120,000-square-foot structure that is expected to open by summer 2017, Lakers officials offered a glimpse Wednesday into the new facility while also announcing a long-term partnership with UCLA Health, whose name will grace the not-yet-finished building. Lakers officials said the UCLA Health Training Center will be triple the size of the teams current training facility, the Toyota Sports Center, which sits less than a half mile away. (The Lakers have practiced at the Toyota Sports Center since 2000 and today share the complex with the Los Angeles Kings of the National Hockey League.)Construction on the Lakers spacious new complex -- which, for the sake of convenience, isnt far from Los Angeles International Airport -- began in September 2015. It will house the Lakers business and basketball operations, as well as the teams D-League affiliate, the D-Fenders. Other impressive features include a barbershop, multiple whirlpools, cryogenics chambers, a theater, kitchen and more.We want players to treat this place like a second home, said Lakers chief operating officer Tim Harris.UCLA Health has also been designated as the exclusive in-game health provider for Lakers players, including at the new facility. Aside from speaking well of the new facility and all that it will offer, Lakers officials emphasized injury prevention -- a buzzword in todays NBA -- as key to their new partnership with UCLA Health. All of this, all of this, is with an eye towards prolonging the careers of these great athletes, Harris added, addressing a group of Lakers players in attendance at Wednesdays event outside the facility. It wasnt just about athlete care. It was about prevention, performance and prolonging their careers.Lakers president Jeanie Buss echoed that point, adding, We just retired a player who played 20 years in the NBA in Kobe Bryant and maybe we can keep pushing that, and certainly with the partnership with UCLA Health, that will give us those kind of resources.Wearing hard hats, fluorescent orange safety vests and goggles, Lakers players toured their future home. Its more than helpful, said guard DAngelo Russell. The 82-game season, plus more including the playoffs, is wear and tear on your body. It starts with the rehab and trying to keep your body 100 percent before every practice, before every game, before every road trip. [Its great] just knowing that you have the best people going into the practice facility every day to help your body do that for you.Speaking of the facility, Lakers rookie head coach Luke Walton, a former Lakers player, referenced many new features, such as an underwater treadmill. But one change especially caught his attention: larger ice baths. The Toyota Sports Center features single-person metal tubs; the new center, which will house three rehabilitation pools, can hold up to 15 at a time, Walton said. But will the glittering new facility help attract potential free agents, especially after the Lakers have struck out on big-name targets in each of the past four summers?I think it can, Walton said. I dont think you strictly rely on it. I think the way we play and the way we compete helps lure free agents. I think when players from across the league come and see this place, theyll be very excited about it. But to me, the most exciting [thing] is the ability to train the guys we already have in here. Weve got a great group of guys, a good young core, and to be able to have them in a place like this and work with them every day is going to be a lot of fun. Buss pointed out that, regardless of the new facility, she believes free agents have always been excited about the Lakers. She added that she believes the new facility will further establish the commitment of the organization to be on the cutting edge. In the Lakers current training facility, 11 championship trophies line the window of Buss office that overlooks the practice court -- and a smiling Buss said that feature will continue at the new facility so that the players will always be reminded of what the goal is and to be inspired by the work that they have to put in to get that trophy. CLEVELAND --?Indians?catcher Yan Gomes might play in October after all.Gomes, who broke his right hand during a minor league injury rehabilitation appearance late in the season, has progressed to the point that Cleveland might include him on its postseason roster when the Indians open the AL Division Series on Thursday against Boston.Hes remarkable, Indians manager Terry Francona said Tuesday before a workout at Progressive Field. It has been a challenging season for Gomes, who separated his right shoulder on July 17 and spent two months on the disabled list. During his final game with Double-A Akron before his expected return, he was struck by a pitch, and it appeared his season was over. However, Gomes worked himself back into the lineup last week. He homered Sunday in Kansas City, connecting on the first pitch he had seen in a major league game in 77 days.Francona did not reveal his roster Tuesday, but Gomes wore shin pads during infield drills and took batting practice. Francona praised Indians trainers Lonnie Soloff and Jim Mehalik for helping Gomes during his recovery.I dont think Yan thought there was a chance this was possible, Francona said. I know Lonnie kind of put it in his head. I think it took Yan maybe a night to kind of grasp that there was a chance. And then once he did, he was all-in, like you can see. When Gomes homered, the Indians dugout erupted in celebration. As he watched on television, Indians president Chris Antonetti was moved as well.It gave me chills, Antonetti said. To know how hard hes worked and all hes been through throughout the course of the season, for him to hit a home run -- not only for himself but the impact it had on the team -- you just couldnt write a better script. I was just so happy for him more than anything. The Indians, who overcame injuries while winning their first AL Central title since 2007, also have been encouraged by the improvement theyve seen in injured starter Danny Salazar, who has been sidelined with a strained forearm. The right-hander wont pitch against Boston, but Salazar might be back on the mound if the Indians advance. He has been increasing his velocity and pitch count in recent bullpen sessions, with the hope that he might be able to pitch in relief during the offseason. In the meantime, the team is sending him to their training facility in Goodyear, Arizona, where he can get more attention and treatment.Hell continue on a throwing program, try to build up his arm strength, feel completely healthy, and well see where it goes from there, Antonetti said. The first goal is just to make sure hes full healthy and at full strength. From there, well determine what the best role might be. But I would imagine it would be in shorter stints. Its not going to be in a starting spot.Danny obviously wants to pitch. They work throughout the course of the year and in spring training just to get to this point and have the opportunity to pitch or play in the postseason. Dannys just not to that point. I think if he could pitch, he would. The 26-year-old went 11-6 with a 3.87 ERA in 25 starts before he left a Sept. 9 outing after four innings. Cheap Retro Jordan . Im not a 32 or 33-year-old looking for a pay day before I get out the game.Im young and a champion and Ive got something to lose. I didnt have to fight Canelo, I chose to fight him and should be getting more money for it.But its not about the money, its about my chance to put myself up there and beat one of the biggest names in the sport. To help prepare for Canelo, Smith has sparred with fellow Briton Kell Brook who wass beaten in five rounds by world middleweight No 1 Gennady Golovkin on Saturday.ddddddddddddSmith -- one of four boxing brothers -- also sparred with Amir Khan before the Bolton welterweight also stepped up two weight divisions to challenge Alvarez for his WBC middleweight title in May, only to be knocked out in the sixth round.Smith, 28, believes both Brook and Khan had tougher tasks than he does this weekend after the pair stepped up two weight divisions.I definitely think Kells fight was harder because Im very confident I can go out there and win, Smith said.In my opinion Kell wont win but Im a genuine light-middleweight and I think Canelo is a genuine light-middleweight too, so its not like Im coming up two weight divisions like Kell is against Golovkin and like Amir did against Canelo.I know Im solid enough to hold my own with any light-middleweight in the world and Ive wanted this fight for a while.Smith, who flew out to the U.S. on Friday, insists he will not freeze in the biggest fight of his life against Mexican superstar Canelo at the 80,000-seat capacity home of NFL side Dallas Cowboys. There will be thousands there to support Canelo but I wont shrink on the night, Smith said. The outcome will have nothing to do with the size of the occasion.Im not stupid and Im not thinking about losing but if I lose it wont be because I froze on the night because nothing gets to me in life. I will thrive on it.I sparred with Amir before he fought Canelo and it helped being around a fight of that magnitude and getting used to it. ' ' '

Over the last 10 years, there have been few horses more popular than California Chrome, who became a national star after winning the 2014 Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes. His achievements are impressive -- hes the highest-earning U.S.-based racehorse of all time -- and his recent victory over Dortmund in the San Diego Handicap was eye-catching and gritty. On Saturday, California Chrome (#1) will run in the $1-million TVG Pacific Classic at Del Mar, and hell be facing a deep field that might be the toughest to line up against him since the 2014 Breeders Cup Classic. Debating whether he could be vulnerable to defeat is a whole discussion in and of itself, but lets assume that youre a big fan of California Chrome and want to make money betting him to win. What is the best approach for making a big score?Since hes the 8-5 favorite on the morning line, a straight win bet wont pay very much - a $10 bet at 8-5 would return just $26. So lets instead focus on playing him on top of the trifecta and superfecta and try to identify the horses most likely to round out the top four. The most logical candidates are Beholder (#7), a three-time champion mare who won the Pacific Classic last year, and Dortmund (#8), a Grade 1 winner that was beaten just a half-length by California Chrome in the San Diego Handicap. In terms of accomplishments and speed figures, they are both capable of giving California Chrome a stiff challenge, but all three of these horses share similar running styles - if they get involved in a stiff duel during the race, it wouldnt be surprising if one falters and allows a late-runner to rally and finish in the trifecta.Hoppertunity (#2) is one such horse. Hes incredibly consistent and has finished in the superfecta in 19 of his 20 races. Back in March, he finished a solid third behind California Chrome in the Dubai World Cup and after a layoff, he was beaten just 2-? lengths when fourth in the Gold Cup at Santa Anita on June 25. However, he missed the Cougar II Handicap last month due to a temperature, and he was doubtful to be entered in the Pacific Classic as recently as a few days ago. Its also worth noting that he finished fourth in his previous two races at Del Mar, and for these reasons, I think he could be vulnerable. In contrast, Hard Aces (#4) enters the Pacific Classic in arguably the best form of his career, with runner-up efforts in the Santa Anita Handicap and Californian Stakes among his performances. Most recently, he showcased a complete change of running style to set a slow pace in the 12-furlong Cougar II Handicap and prevail by a half-length. I think he will relish the distance of the Pacific Classic, and a fast pace would also help his chances - I think he has a big chance to finish on the board.I would also include Dalmore (#9), a 3-year-old that gamely reeled in Danzing Candy to win the 8.5-furlong Affirmed Stakes last month by a half-length. This is a big step up in class, but he strikes me as an improving colt that will enjoy more distance and possibly out-finish many of his older rivals.Wagering Strategy A: Trifectas$5 trifecta: 1 with 7,8 with 7,8 ($10) $2 trifecta: 1 with 7,8 with 4,9 ($8) $2 trifecta: 1 with 4,9 with 4,7,8,9 ($12)Wagering Strategy B: Superfectas$2 superfecta: 1 with 7,8 with 7,8 with 2,4,9 ($12) $1 superfecta: 1 with 7,8 with 4,9 with 2,7,8 ($8) $0.50 superfecta: 1 with 4,9 with 4,7,8,9 with 2,4,7,8,9 ($9)Good luck, and enjoy the race! For more stories like this check out Americas Best Racing. The quest begins with what is supposed to be an easy one, although Germany has traditionally been a stubborn opponent to Canadian teams at international tournaments. Lewis Hamilton says he will try to beat teammate Nico Rosberg by as big a margin as possible in Abu Dhabi, even though it may prove futile in his pursuit of a fourth world championship.Rosberg leads Hamilton by 12 points ahead of the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, meaning Hamilton has to hope his teammate finishes off the podium to stand a chance of winning the title. The British driver has won the last three races with convincing margins over his teammate, but Rosberg has only had to finish second each time in the knowledge that he is still on course for the title.Faced with a title showdown that is not in his hands, Hamilton said all he can do in Abu Dhabi is try to beat Rosberg by the biggest margin possible.Obviously I have to continue what Im doing, he said. Nicos finished every single race this year apart, obviously, from Barcelona which we both didnt finish so hes had fantastic reliability, so I think riight now, as the way its going its going to be very hard to beat him.ddddddddddddhat doesnt mean I cant win the race, so Im going to take the energy I have now and the speed that I have -- which has been great these past few races -- and really try to push as hard as I can in that race to get as far ahead. Its all I can do.Although Rosberg only has to finish third in Abu Dhabi, he said he will try to emulate his victory at Yas Marina last year.Well, its going to be a great, exciting race weekend, a great battle for sure. I would like to win the race and Im going to try and do that for sure. Ive had good experience there in the past but of course thats not going to help this year. You know we all start from zero this year, every time we go to a different track. Yeah, feeling good so lets see. ' ' '

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- JaeSean Tate scored 21 points and pulled down 10 rebounds as Ohio State overcame cold shooting and some ugly play to beat North Carolina Central 69-63 Monday night.Ohio State (2-0) struggled for much of the game and let the Eagles hang around. The Buckeyes shot just 46.4 percent from the floor and were lucky to get away with the victory over the less-talented Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team.We just didnt come out ready to play today, Tate said.Fortunately for the Buckeyes, North Carolina Central (0-2) was sloppier, committing 20 turnovers and losing two players to fouls, including point guard Dajuan Graf.Patrick Cole carried the load for the NCCU with 26 points. Ron Trapps added 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.Freshman center Micah Potter added 11 points on 3-for-4 shooting from the 3-point line for the Buckeyes, and Keita Bates-Diop had nine.I didnt like a whole lot of what I saw tonight, Ohio State coach Thad Matta said.Ohio State led 31-29 after a slow start by both teams in the first half. The Buckeyes had a 12-0 run and led by as much as 21-11 with 9:17 left in the first, but allowed North Carolina Central to slowly climb back. The Eagles briefly had a lead until Tate hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to end the half. They cut the lead to five with 40 seconds left.Hats off to Ohio State. They made some significant plays at significant time, NCCU coach LeVelle Moton said. I thought we did enough to win the basketball game.North Carolina Central led 32-31 with 18:46 to go in the game, but the Buckeyes slowly pulled away.Weve got Providence next, and if we come out like that its not going to be pretty, Tate said . We know from last year that these early games count. We cant just be lackadaisical. We have to come out there and be the first team to punch the other in the mouth.Ohio State starting forward Marc Loving sat much of the first half after picking up two fouls in the first 1:15 of the game. He finished with three points.BIG PICTURENorth Carolina Central: If theres such thing as a moral victory, the Eagles got one by staying with the Buckeyes for most of the game. In the end, the best the Eagles got from the trip to Columbus was a chance to hone their game against a more-talented team. They nearly pulled off the upset.Ohio State: The Buckeyes were put on notice that this years version still needs a lot of work. Fortunately there are more tune-up games before conference play begins after Christmas.QUOTABLEWe werent physically and mentally very tough, Matta said. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Somethings wrong in Rio.The team that usually wins big is barely winning. An unheard of two straight close games for the U.S. Olympic mens basketball team has created a question that few dared consider just a few days ago: Is the best team in the world not good enough for gold?Im not concerned, were not concerned with things we could do a little bit better, four-time Olympian Carmelo Anthony said. But were OK. Were fine.OK and fine arent the U.S. standard.Great. Dominant. Those are the standards the Americans have set.The problems seem to center on a lack of international experience and time to prepare for the Rio Games. The Americans are still unbeaten, but theyre far from unbeatable going into their final game of the preliminary round Sunday against France. Were going to play a team who struggled the last two games and Im sure theyre not too sure, like, who they are as well, France forward Nicolas Batum said. So its going to be big matchup Sunday. The U.S. team that many considered a gold medal lock wouldnt even win its group outright with a loss Sunday, either tying France or sharing first with the French and Australia at 4-1. In fact, the Americans could even end up finishing third in Group A.The Americans supposedly left third-place finishes behind long ago.But after needing to pull away late to beat Australia 98-88 and holding on to edge Serbia 94-91 on Friday when Bogdan Bogdanovic missed a 3-pointer, anything seems possible.Again, well figure this out, Paul George said. Its good that were finding ways to win these games right now. Hopefully these will be the ones that help prepare us later on for the style of this tournament. The Americans dont seem stressed, canceling practice Saturday. But some extra time in the gym would seem to benefit what is the most unprepared U.S. Olympic team since the 2004 squad that managed only bronze in Athens.Like then, the Americans were hit hard by player withdrawals and were still putting together a roster right up until their deadline. Instead of bringing experienced Olympians to Rio de Janeiro, they have 10 rookies, players who look more like lost tourists when it comes to the ways of international basketball. The 2008 and 2012 powerhouses were filled with players who had competed previously in the Olympics or FIBA competitions, and understood the nuances even better than some of their opponents.ddddddddddddThis group is learning on the fly, and theyre not giving themselves high marks.Again, as good as we are, if we continue playing like this, this games going to get even tougher, George said.No teams can match the Americans talent, and they dont pretend that can. But a team like France has a familiarity this U.S. team can never attain. These French have been playing big games for years, winning bronze in the 2014 Basketball World Cup, and after falling short of qualifying for the Olympics when they lost in the semifinals of last summers EuroBasket they were hosting, winning a tournament in July to secure their spot.Maybe, maybe got more chemistry than they are, because I played with this team for eight years now, the same group of guys, every summer, Batum said. So we know each other well, same coach, too, so we know the plays and everything. So that may be sometimes.Batum and his teammates -- along with everyone else in Brazil -- quickly point out that the U.S. is talented enough to overcome that. The U.S. is the U.S., France star Tony Parker said. Theyve been the standard for a long time and they are the best team in the tournament, and until somebody beats them they still are the best team.Nobody has done that in a decade, with the Americans seeking their 50th consecutive tournament victory Sunday. Few teams have even come close to beating them and before this week the U.S. had never played consecutive games decided by 10 points or fewer under coach Mike Krzyzewski.Krzyzewski knew things would get tougher once the opponents did. The Americans arrived in Rio untested after a tame exhibition schedule that included China and Venezuela, the two teams they crushed to open the Olympics. But Australia and Serbia were much higher quality and so are the French, who are ranked fifth in the world. They all have offensive systems and players who can make them work.We never saw that in any exhibition game or whatever, Krzyzewski said. Were seeing it right now for the first time, so we just have to learn from it and getter better.---Follow Brian Mahoney on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/Briancmahoney ' ' '

Samsung Galaxy remained hot in finishing its group stage matches on Saturday night at the League of Legends World Championships, breaking its own record for fastest victory in the 2016 tournament in an easy win over Splyce. The South Koreans clinched the top spot in Group D with the win against a clearly overmatched European squad.Samsung support Jo CoreJJ Yong-in on Tahm Kench and ADC Park Ruler Jae-hyeok on Jhin combined to bully the duo lane for Splyce, where first blood was obtained early for the third seed from South Korea. Ruler finished with a massive 7/1/7 scoreline, as he and CoreJJ were too strong for Splyce support Mihael Mikyx Mehle, who appeared out of place on Alistar, a champion he is certainly not known for using professionally.Splyce attempted to get back into the game with a mid-lane gank and a top tower dive early, but neither effort panned out and only solidified the advantage for its opponents. Tower sieges, a Baron Nashor kill and one more team fight outside of the base were the methodical steps taken to turn a huge advantage into a relatively academic victory for Samsung. The win means none of the other teams can catch SSG for the top spot in the group, and the South Koreans will play a second-place team in the first match of the knockout stage. The remaining spot in the quarterfinals will be decided between Team SoloMid and Royal Never Give Up, who play later Saturday evening. Nike Air Max 270 Femme Pas Chere . By Rich Shook, The Sports XchangeDETROIT -- Its one of the more anxious days of the season for players -- the last game day prior to Mondays nonwaiver trade deadline.Houston closes out its three-game series in Detroit on Sunday with lefty Dallas Keuchel of the Astros opposing Tigers right-hander Mike Pelfrey. Houston dropped the first two games of the series. There will be a certain amount of anxiety -- probably more in Houstons clubhouse than avowedly stand-pat Detroits -- of players on the bubble or those who have heard their names tossed around in trade rumors. Its difficult, Houston manager A.J. Hinch said, because youre uncertain of what can happen. Theres a general excitement around it because of the possibilities that are out there.Especially when youre doing well or your team has a winning record or theres talks of buying. The lines drawn in the fact that if we do acquire somebody, then somebody in the clubhouse is going away, either to the minor leagues or in a trade. Its a little unsettling until the deadline. But youd always rather be in it and be a buyer and be talking about making additions that you think are going to help your team get to the playoffs or into the World Series. The Astros are said to be shopping for pitching (isnt everybody?) while the Tigers are more focused on getting three key injured players back -- right-hander Jordan Zimmermann, right fielder J.D. Martinez and lefty Daniel Norris. It can add to the excitement, manager Brad Ausmus of the Tigers said. Even if it doesnt involve your team, just watching the moves around the country involving other teams. Well just wait and see. You cant let that distract you.Detroit will not be in action on trade deadline day; Houston goes home to host Toronto.Theres a lot of unknowns, Hinch said. Theres a lot of rumors and I think every one of our guys follow them. Theyll float by my office and ask a lot of questions. Well all know soon enough when the deadline gets here. You say buy, Detroit right-hander Justin Verlander said, I kind of meant the not-sell aspect. I see what Mr. Avilas (GM Al Avila) been saying and I completely agree with him. Weve got one of the best hitters in the game (J.D. Martinez) coming off the DL soon. Thats a big acquisition in and of itself. Weve missed him for six to seven weeks now. Then youve got a couple guys, (Jordan) Zimmermann and (Daniel) Norris, that are big for this team as well. So hopefully get those puzzle pieces back where they need to be and we just roll. Keep playing good baseball.I have to commend Mr. Ilitch (owner Mike) and Al for putting together what we all thought at the beginning of the year was a great ball club. So you look at the big picture, we have a great nucleus of guys here. I dont think you have to add anything. The Astros hope Keuchel can bring a little calm to the last day of games prior to the deadline and hes got a nice track record against the Tigers.Keuchel (6-10, 4.57 ERA) is not having a Cy Young season but he did pitch well in a loss to the Yankees in his last start, allowing two runs in 7 2/3 innings. He pitched eight innings of shutout ball at Detroit in their first meeting this season, going mostly soft, and over his career is 3-1 with a 3.03 ERA in five games against the Tigers.Pelfrey has faced the Astros nine times during his career and is 3-5 with a 4.56 ERA. Houston beat him the first time they met this year. He tied for the league lead with 29 double plays thrown last year and is at 24 this year.Ausmus said Saturday he will pitch Anibal Sanchez against the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday with rookie Michael Fulmer getting extra rest and going Wednesday. Thursdays starter is not known but the manager said it wont be Verlander, who will get an extra day off.Houston, like Detroit, has an eight-man bullpen and this means it has only three bench players. Thats hurting the Astros now because two of those are regulars who are injured and the third is a catcher, who is always the last man in. Air Max 270 Clearance . Houston won 3-0 to advance to face New York in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Last in the game, Di Vaio and Romero got into a shoving match with several Houston players. Romero appeared to elbow and kick Houston defender Kofi Sarkodie. Fake Air Force 1 For Sale . Perhaps Carroll was so prepared for a break because he believes there is very little the Seattle Seahawks need heading into the off-season. "I dont see anything that we need to add. We just have to get better," Carroll said. http://www.outletsneakersclearance.com/fake-adidas-nmd.html . After taking two big hits this week -- losing at home and dropping back-to-back games for the first time all season -- Indiana struck back by playing its most complete game of the year. EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and Washington Redskins cornerback Josh Norman received warnings from the officials prior to Sundays matchup at MetLife Stadium. The warnings were a preemptive measure after their ugly meeting last year, when Norman was a member of the Carolina Panthers.Beckham, who was suspended one game last year for his actions, felt he was under such a microscope Sunday that he was worried hed be tossed from the 29-27 loss to the Redskins late in the fourth quarter after being penalized for offensive pass interference on a pick play. Beckham contacted Norman on the play before the ball was caught by Giants wide receiver Sterling Shepard.I was honestly shocked when we ran a play and went to, and I guess I blocked too early. I was surprised they didnt throw me out of the game then, Beckham said. I wouldnt have been surprised, actually.Giants center Weston Richburg was ejected from the game for committing two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties in the same category. That is the rule that was spawned from last years matchup between Beckham and Norman. They implemented a new rule this year. Its basically the Odell Beckham Jr. rule, Beckham said. I had three personal fouls last year, so they said if you come out and get one personal foul and another one for the same thing. [Sunday], they came up before the game and said, if you do anything, were throwing you out of the game. That was before the game. There was, No, you get a warning. There was not any of that.Youu just have to be on your best behavior.dddddddddddd Unfortunately, thats what its come to. Its not really football anymore as much as it is all the other things that play into it.Norman received a similar speech from the officiating crew.Wow, the words that they said, Im trying to figure out where they get them from. I really am, like, man, its just something of the game -- dont try to bring, something he said which I cant think of right now. Maybe at a later date Ill be able to say it, but right now you know, just coming out there, going with my group of guys, trying to get warmed up and [they] came and pulled me off to the side and him saying that were not going to make a mockery of the game -- wow, that surprised me, Norman said. That was the word I was looking for actually. A mockery of the game. I dont know if that was from up top or if thats him directly saying it to me.Referee John Hussey and his crew officiated the contest. It was flush with 19 accepted penalties for 198 yards from the two teams combined. Norman was flagged for defensive holding and unnecessary roughness for a high hit on Shepard. Beckham was flagged for the aforementioned offensive pass interference.Yeah, with all thats being written and said about the game, we knew that the officials wanted to come out and get control of the game and make sure it didnt get away from them early, Giants coach Ben McAdoo said. The 10th-ranked German improved her record in finals to 3-5.Former Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers says he has turned down five opportunities to return to management since leaving Anfield, including offers from Premier League clubs. Rodgers was sacked by Liverpool in October 2015 after a run of one win from nine games, bringing to an end his three-year stint in charge. The former Swansea City boss was linked with a return to the Liberty Stadium in December after Garry Monk was sacked, and Rodgers confirmed he held discussions with chairman Huw Jenkins about the vacancy. I have had five opportunities since I left Liverpool to get back into work, all at clubs I really respect, Rodgers told beIN Sports. But I just felt I wanted to take some time out. It is very intense when you are in the game.I spoke to Huw Jenkins, the chairman and people I know well, but I made it clear and I was pretty open. Swansea is a wonderful club and there were also a couple of other Premier League clubs I could have gone back to. Rodgers spent two years in charge at Swansea But I wasnt going to be available to come into a club before the summer.ddddddddddddI enjoy the scrutiny and life of being at the leading edge of the game, but the opportunity that presented itself when I left Liverpool gave me the chance to go away for the first time in five years.I can sit and reflect on how I work and can improve and I hope my next club will benefit from that. I had the same situation when I left Reading in December [2009].I had a bit of time out and my next club, Swansea, benefited from that and it went well, as it did at Liverpool for a period. So I hope this will be the same and then I will look to get back somewhere by pre-season. Rodgers hopes to be back in work this summer, although not necessarily in England.I am open. It is where I feel I can go in and make a difference: a job that will excite me, he added. It doesnt have to necessarily be at a top club. It can be at home or abroad. It is just about finding the right opportunity, one that will excite me to go in and somewhere I can help make better. For England football fans of a certain age, Euro 96 remains the pinnacle, when, for a summer at least, the Three Lions seemed invincible. Twenty years on and with Euro 2016 kick-off 10 days away, we spoke to four members of Terry Venables Euro 96 squad - Darren Anderton, Stuart Pearce, Jamie Redknapp and Steve Howey - to get their memories from one of Englands finest tournament performances.Euro 96 brought a major championship to English stadia for the first time since 1966, and with it the pressure to live up to past glory, but a pre-tournament trip to the Far East got preparations off to a rocky start. Jamie Redknapp recalls his experience of playing for England against Scotland Euro 2016: Ultimate Guide Your guide to all 24 teams at Euro 2016 this summer Paul Gascoignes 29th birthday celebrations went on well into the Hong Kong night as Redknapp, then aged 22, remembers: Our issues before the football started with the Dentists Chair and all that - it was a night that got out of hand. The papers predictably had a field day and the headlines in the build-up to their opening group game against Switzerland were brutal. Englands starting XI to face Germany in their Euro 96 semi-final A bunch of has-beens show up a bunch of wannabes was the Daily Mails verdict after Venables side scraped a 1-0 friendly win over a Hong Kong XI. Sporting morons was another slightly more succinct put-down.We got quite a bit of criticism because of that Hong Kong trip, but the connection between the lads was excellent, Howey, a substitute in all five tournament matches, told Sky Sports. Alan Shearer wheels away to celebrate his goal against Switzerland A 1-1 draw at Wembley against the Swiss, led by former PSG and Porto boss Artur Jorge, opened the door to further cynicism. There was so much optimism as the host nation, and it did seem to change after that first game, Anderton added. We didnt get off to a fantastic start but we knew we had fantastic players. We had tough games to come against Holland and Scotland, but we thought one good performance could send us on our way.A meeting with Craig Browns Scotland was always likely to be a nervy affair, and the game ultimately turned on the introduction of Redknapp with the score goalless. Gascoigne celebrates his stunning goal against Scotland The Sky Sports pundit recalls: We werent great and Terry made a superb tactical substitution at the break! We started to play a little bit - Scotland were a very good side - but we just had the edge, Gazza was immense and his goal was so good.Gascoignes flick over Colin Hendry and volley past Andy Goram remains one of the defining moments of the tournament, but while England showed signs of quality in the 2-0 victory over Scotland, it was not until the 4-1 thrashing of Holland in their final Group A match that the whole nation seemed to unite behind them. Shearer scores during Englands 4-1 victory over Holland Twenty years ago last week, Baddiel and Skinners Three Lions (Footballs Coming Home) stormed to No 1, and roared on by that unofficial national anthem, England fever spread ahead of a quarter-final date with Spain. As we progressed, there were more and more people on the route to Wembley, Anderton remembers. Heading to games down the M40, you started noticing flags everywhere. It was surreal, and like nothing I have experienced before or since. Stuart Pearce celebrates his successful penalty against Spain It would come down to a penalty shoot-out, now most often remembered for Pearces celebration after his successful take. Having failed from the spot against Germany in the World Cup semi-final at Italia 90, was it relief or elation?I knew that it was going to be my last tournament, Pearce told Sky Sports. I planned to retire so I knew whichever match was our last was going to be my last one too. David Seaman made a crucial penalty save from Gary McAllister during Englands win over Scotland England rode their luck against the Spaniards, who were denied by the assistant referees flag and an inspired performance from keeper David Seaman. The Arsenal stopper was the eventual hero, keeping out a spot-kick by Miguel Nadal - Rafas uncle - to seal progress on penalties after a tense 0-0 draw.We didnt play particularly well, Pearce admitted. Spain were better than us but as luck happens, we had a goalkeeper who was probably the best in the world at the time. Now only Germany stood between England and their first major final since 1966.The drive to Wembley was frightening, Anderton recalls. As we got nearer the stadium, Alan Shearer put on Footballs Coming Home to get the boys pumped up and ready.Once we got to the stadium, it felt like there was already 100,000 people there. I remember staying out for the warm-up probably longer than we should have done, with Baddiel and Skinner on repeat. It really did get us going. Darren Anderton recalls his experience of playing for England against Germany in the semi-finals A national TV audience of 24 million was celebrating inside three minutes, Shearer nodding in his fifth and final Euro 96 goal to put England in dreamland, but Germany swiftly struck back through Stefan Kuntz. The game ebbed and flowed but the hosts looked the more likely to grab the winner in extra time, Gascoigne a shaved stud away from a Golden Goal and Anderton denied by the width of the post.I try and forget about that even now, Anderton said, reliving his near miss. Steve McManaman crossed and it was one of those that was just a fraction behind me.I got my foot on it as I was falling backwards and when I hit it, I thought it was in, but it hit the post - and not only that, it bounced right back into the goalkeepers arms.Thats when you start thinking, maybe this is not meant to be. Gascoigne was inches away from scoring a Golden Goal against Germany Two hours of high-energy football came and went in a flash, but curiously Venables didnt make a single substitution. The adrenaline was pumping so much, it felt like you could play for another 120 minutes, Anderton, who played the full game, added. It was that sort of night. When youre playing well as an individual and a team, you can run forever, and thats how it felt. For the second match running, England would face a shoot-out. Spot-kicks now leave all but the most optimistic England fan resigned to defeat, and victory over Spain remains the nations only major tournament success in seven attempts, a shoot-out win ratio of just 17 per cent. But it started positively on that warm Wembley night as England dispatched five in a row, matched every step of the way by Germany.Everyone knew Shearer would have one, because he was our taker, Pearce added. From then, there was no real defined order. I volunteered just leading into the shoot-out to take mine. Gareth Southgates penalty miss against the Germans ended Englands tournament You know the story from here. Shearer, Platt, Pearce, Gascoigne and Sheringham all beat Andreas Kopke, but when Gareth Southgate failed, German captain Andreas Moller sent England crashing out.It was a surreal moment, just heartbreaking, Anderton said. Germany celebrate victory over England at Wembley The atmosphere after the game was almost disbelief. It was a very quiet dressing room and a quiet coach. We had a few beers in the bar back at the hotel and the realisation set in.A thrilling friendly victory in Berlin over Germanys 2016 vintage has raised expectations for this years squad, but many feel a quarter-final place would qualify as success for England in France. Two decades on and no tournament since has captured the spirit of Euro 96, but Roy Hodgson takes an exciting young team to Chantilly, and if they can go one better, it could yet be a summer to remember. Shearer celebrates in front of the England fans at Wembley Going to the games and coming back after, especially when we won, the streets were lined with fans, Howey remembers. It was a beautiful summer as well. The atmosphere, the song, it just brought it all back that this was where football started. The fans played an unbelievable part in that.Pearce agreed, adding: Its the best tournament I was ever involved in, and the general atmosphere was by far the best I have ever experienced wearing an England shirt, theres no doubt about that.It just brought the whole country together. The Clippers were angry about blowing a big lead; the Kings didnt like being in that kind of hole and nearly digging themselves out only to lose.Steve Bruce continued his unbeaten run with Aston Villa, but they were held to a 1-1 draw by Brighton at the Amex in the Sky Bet Championship. Nathan Baker headed Villa in front after 20 minutes on Friday night before the Seagulls pulled level through a fine Glenn Murray effort on the stroke of half-time.Brighton may have dominated possession on the night, but it was Villa who had the of the better chances. Unfortunately for the away fans, though, they could not find another breakthrough and Bruce added a third draw to his three wins from six games in charge. Baker (left) scored with a header after 20 minutes Brighton, meanwhile, closed the gap on league leaders Newcastle, but the Magpies could extend the gap to five points when they play away at Leeds on Sunday, live on Sky Sports. Brighton started the better of the two sides, but it was Villa who opened the scoring thanks to Bakers header with the first real chance of the game after 20 minutes.Villa had not really got forward until they won a free-kick 35 yards out, and Albert Adomahs floated ball in found the head of Baker, who rose highest in the area to glance the ball past David Stockdale. Glenn Murray equalised from the edge of the area The home side continued to push forward but struggled to get their front two of Murray and Sam Baldock into the game until the 44th minute when the pair combined to devastating effect.First, Murray received the ball from Steve Sidwell then played a lovely one-two with Baldock before firing into the bottom corner with a fierce low strike from the edge of the area for his 150th league goal. The second half started at breakneck pace as both sides pushed for the next goal, and it was Murray who went closest just after the hour, heading narrowly over the bar for Brighton after Baldock had lifted the ball into his path.Villa boss Bruce threw on Jack Grealish midway through the second half and the young midfielder made an immediate impact as his quality on the ball helped the away side to dominate. Shane Duffy is challenged by Gabriel Agbonlahor In a period of pressure, Grealish saw two shots from the edge of the areaa deflected narrowly wide, while Jonathan Kodjia rattled the crossbar with one header before forcing a fine fingertip save from David Stockdale with another.ddddddddddddBrighton substitute Jamie Murphy then forced a fine save from Pierluigi Gollini late on, but it was Villa who always looked the more likely to score again.Chris Hughtons side held on, though, and Villa missed their chance to climb into the top half of the table, sitting in 13th ahead of the rest of the weekends action. Brighton manager Chris Hughton claims he was happy to claim a draw against Aston Villa given the quality that Steve Bruces side possesses Brighton boss Chris Hughton:I thought we were very unfortunate to go 1-0 down when we did. We were up against a side that were very compact and pressed the ball, but didnt really have a goal threat in that first half period [before they scored]. It was very against the run of play. But as the game grew on they showed their quality and it probably got to the stage at 1-1 where I was reasonably happy with a draw. Theyre a very good side and have players who have come in for big fees to play in the Premier League, thats what we were up against. They showed what a big threat they are and why theyll be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce:Its the best weve played in the second half because to come here is never going to be easy, [Brighton] are a very good side who have been playing very, very well. Were a bit disappointed we didnt see it out until half-time, but the way we responded in the second half, I can only congratulate them on a really good performance. With a little bit more luck maybe we could have gone away with all three.Weve worked meticulously on the shape and organisation, and with the flair players weve got were always likely to score a goal, and touch wood at the moment its going okay.Upgrade to Sky Sports now to watch Man Utd v Arsenal this Saturday and get the first six months half price! San Antonio Spurs guard Manu Ginobili has been balding for quite some time. Its not news. But with the Spurs retiring?Tim Duncans iconic No. 21 jersey against the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, Dec. 18 in a special postgame ceremony, the team has been reliving some of Duncans greatest moments and memories on social media. On Friday, the team tweeted out a photo gallery of Duncan and Ginobili over the years.Upon seeing the tweet, which features Duncan clasping Ginobilis head, Spurs guard Patty Mills roasted Ginobili, concluding that Ginobili lost his hair because of Duncans continuous head rubs.Instead of firing back, Ginobili embraced the joke, posting a hilarious GIF of Duncan restoring Ginobilis hair and claiming he chooses to maintain his barren hairstyle.Well played, Manu.-- Jovan Buha Albert Almora Jr. Cubs Jersey . Central Coast coach Paul Okon has called on the Mariners to show some early defensive resilience to avoid rolling the dice and getting involved in A-League shootouts. The Mariners last week celebrated their first clean sheet in 36 games when they held out Perth Glory 2-0 in Gosford.Having witnessed his team finally hold the opposition scoreless, Okon wants them to display more of that defensive miserliness in Saturdays NSW home derby against Western Sydney Wanderers.Weve got to be resilient enough, certainly earlier on in the game, to stop teams from scoring, Okon said.If we can do that then were a real threat against any side and if we cant, were always going to have to roll the dice and cross our fingers whether or not were going to score more goals than the opposition.Despite the desire to maintain a strong defensive presence, Okon said the Mariners were trying to be more offensive in their outlook.Central Coast welcome back Liam Rose from suspension, but Okon said another midfielder, Mickael Tavares, remained in doubt due to an ongoing ankle injury. He thought Brendon Santalab would get the nod as the Wanderers main striker on Saturday ahead of Kerem Bulut, as he scored against the Mariners in the 1-1 draw at Spotless Stadium in late October.Okon is paying no heed tto the Wanderers ladder position, with the Sydney club starting the round in seventh, one spot below his team.ddddddddddddThey are a good side regardless of where they sit on the ladder, Okon said.Theyve got some very good players, their front line is exciting. Its a big test, its a big opportunity to see where were at.Hopefully we live up to the expectations. We are slowly starting to rebuild.I think weve put that little bit of pressure on ourselves to perform at a certain level and hopefully that will be the same tomorrow evening.Okon is a former national teammate of Wanderers coach Tony Popopvic and said they saw each other last week and also exchanged texts.Poppa is not only a colleague, hes a good mate. But hes a very fierce competitor and no doubt hell want to win the game and it will be a handshake and then each to their own, Okon said.STATS THAT MATTER:*Western Sydney Wanderers are undefeated in their past four games against Central Coast Mariners.*Central Coast Mariners are aiming for their first three-match A-League unbeaten streak since January 2015.*The Wanderers have won four of their past five away games within New South Wales. CHASKA, Minn. -- Game on.After months of debate over the team rosters, four full days of practice rounds and an interminable opening ceremony, the first session of the Ryder Cup is finally set.The opening four matches are foursomes (alternate shot), which means fast-paced rounds and plenty of strategy. Lets break down each of those matches.Team USA: Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed vs. Team Europe: Henrik Stenson, Justin RoseForget having an undercard. Or an opening act. Or easing our way into this years edition of the Ryder Cup. Both captains come out swinging with a pair of heavy hitters in the first group of the day. Dont believe it? These two pairings were a combined 5-0-1 two years ago, with Spieth and Reed having the only half-point. Call it a close one, but based on the energy from the home crowd and a lingering knee injury to Stenson, expect the red, white and blue to prevail at the end.?Advantage:?USATeam USA: Phil Mickelson, Rickie Fowler vs. Team Europe: Rory McIlroy, Andy Sullivan, 8.50 a.m. ETThere were a lot of murmurs coming out of the U.S. camp that Lefty would play only four-ball matches and sit during the foursomes. So much for that. Hell go out with Fowler, who could be showing a little rust after going three weeks since having a shot that mattered. Meanwhile, the rookie Sullivan should start working on his 4-footers, because McIlroys iron and wedge game has been locked in lately.Advantage:?EuropeTeam USA: Jimmy Walker, Zach Johnson vs. Team Europe: Sergio Garcia,Martin Kaymer, 9:05 a.m. ETIn theory, the strategy behind finding foursome partners is to pair like-minded players together. Walker and Johnson? Ones a big hitter; the other is known for his wedge game. That doesnt mean they cant succeed together, it just means they might find themselves hitting from some unfamiliar places on the course. Garcia and Kaymer, though, should form a nice pairing of ball-strikers. Just call em fire and ice.Advantage: EuropeTeam USA: Dustin Johnson,?Matt Kuchar vs. Lee Westwood, Thomas Pieters, 9:20 a.m. ETLets not overthink things: DJ has played the best golf of any player this year, so expect it to continue this week. The pairing with Kuchar might seem like The Odd Couple, but they have played together in the past. Four years ago, Westwood rode the Friday coattails of a young Belgian to defeat the team of Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. This time it isnt Nicolas Colsaerts, but Pieters who will pair with him, though he can only hope for the same success.Advantage: USA Authentic NBA Jerseys .J. -- Seven games into a disappointing season, New York Giants defensive catalyst Jason Pierre-Paul is getting the feeling hes back. His players seem to feel the same way, considering the way theyve been contending for a post-season berth. Justin Masterson pitched effectively into the seventh inning, Nick Swisher hit a two-run homer and Cleveland completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 3-1 victory Wednesday. "Weve got guys in here that want to be in the playoffs, and were working our butts off to try and get there," Swisher said. The Indians, who began the day 5 1/2 games behind first-place Detroit in the AL Central and 3 1/2 behind Oakland in the race for the second wild card spot, improved to 69-58 and surpassed last seasons win total with 35 games to spare. "Im enjoying myself," said Francona, who guided the Boston Red Sox to a pair of World Series titles. "I thought this was the right place -- I knew it was -- and its been everything I hoped it would be. I love the people I work with. Im enjoying this team and trying to see if we can get better together. Its been fun." Masterson (14-9) allowed a run and five hits over 6 2-3 innings, tied a season high with five walks and struck out seven just 10 days after giving up five runs over 4 1-3 innings against the Angels at Cleveland in his shortest outing of the season. The right-hander, who made his big league debut against the Angels in April 2008, is 4-0 with a 1.87 ERA in nine career starts against them. "It wasnt easy. I mean, you look up in the fourth inning and I think Justin had more balls than strikes," Francona said. "But he had good movement and he kind of bobbed and weaved through their lineup. He only had probably one inning where he really cruised." The Angels put the potential tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position in the seventh before Masterson fanned Erick Aybar with his 110th and final pitch for the second out. Rich Hill came on and retired Josh Hamilton with a tremendous assist from third baseman Lonnie Chisenhall, who robbed the Angels slugger of a hit with a diving stop in the hole and threw him out. "I feel a little disappointed that I only went 6 2-3 innings, because the goal is to get as deep as I can," Masterson said. "I had some good movement early in the game, got a lot of gground balls and got some great defensive plays behind me.dddddddddddd" The Indians got an insurance run in the ninth when Mike Aviles scored on Dane De La Rosas second wild pitch of the inning. Cody Allen pitched a scoreless eighth for Cleveland and Chris Perez got three outs for his 20th save in 24 attempts. The Indians bullpen had a 1.29 ERA and stranded 24 of 25 inherited baserunners during the teams 6-3 road trip. Jerome Williams (5-10) yielded two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings with six strikeouts and two walks. The right-hander is 0-8 with a 6.79 ERA over his last 12 starts and his only victory at home this season came in a 12-0 rout of Seattle on May 21. "Everybody was tired today, and it would have been an easy day to just show up," said Francona, who used nine pitchers in Tuesday nights 14-inning win. "We need to get wins like this." The Angels scored in the sixth when Hamilton led off with a single and came all the way around on Hank Congers one-out double into the right field corner. Los Angeles put runners at the corners in the second and fourth innings, but Masterson escaped the first jam with a strikeout of Peter Bourjos and the second on a flyball by Andrew Romine. "His ball was moving pretty well and was obviously sinking," Bourjos said. "We had some opportunities to blow the game open early, but we didnt take advantage of it." NOTES: Romine started at 2B for Angels for the first time this season in place of Howie Kendrick, who has missed 15 games because of a hyperextended left knee. ... Indians DH Jason Giambi doubled in the second inning, putting him within two hits of 2,000. ... Masterson, who became a full-time starter in 2010, reached the 1,000-inning mark for his career when he fielded Bourjos leadoff bunt in the fifth and threw him out. Bourjos had a bunt single in the seventh, ending an 0-for-21 drought. ... ... The Indians are 42-39 since May 23, the last time they led their division. ... Cleveland LF Michael Brantley, who broke Rocky Colavitos franchise record of 212 consecutive errorless games by an outfielder in Mondays series opener, has committed only six errors since beginning his big league career in 2009. ... LAWRENCE, Kan. -- Kansas offensive lineman Jordan Shelley-Smith has decided to retire from football due to repeated concussions, the second player in the Big 12 to make that decision this week.Shelley-Smith, a senior, missed three games last season after sustaining a concussion against Oklahoma State. He has played minimal snaps after another concussion before the season. We do take concussions very seriously around here, Kansas coach David Beaty said Tuesday. It was a very emotional day for him last week when he announced that to our team.Head trauma has been a major topic of discussion in the NFL and increasingly at the college level. Oklahoma sophomore linebacker Tay Evans decided to retire for similar reasons after he was injured against Ohio State earlier this season. And just last year, Kansas linebacker Jake Love made the same decision after dealing with several concussions. These kids health, not only for today but down the road, is so important, Beaty said. Thats somebodys family treasure. Its their one life. Its their one life. Its all they get.Beaty said there has been significant progress in how much attention is given to head injuries from the days when he was playing wide receiver for Lindenwood University in the early 1990s.We called them cobwebs back then, he said. Weve seen all of the examples of men that are walking around right now that suffered from these types of injuries and we didnt have the technology, we didnt have the studies available to tell us how dangerous it really was.Shelley-Smith began his career as a tight end, playing in eight games as a freshman. But he became a key offensive lineman after making the transition his sophomore season, playing 12 games and starting against Iowa State. He also started the nine games he played last season.Beaty said the Waco, Texas, native will continue to have a role with the team.Footballs a big industry and theres a lot of things going on that would make you want to have a player out there regardless, he said. The demonstration, according to Hayes, was to?help?future student-athletes get compensation for playing major college sports.Hayes, who joined the ESPN/ABC News podcast Capital Games on Thursday, said he knows he wont benefit from his activism since he will be a professional next year. If this thing does change, I wont benefit from it and its completely fine, Hayes said?on Capital Games.A lot of things that are changed, the person whose doing the change or advocating for it, rarely reaps those benefits, Hayes said. He also said the funds raised by his sign went to a local Boys and Girls Club and that it was cleared by the Wisconsin compliance department after the weekend, when he reviewed the matter with the school. He said he faces no potential violations for his actions.I did it to create the conversation of paying student-athletes. I dont need money personally, Hayes said. Im not necessarily the embodiment of broke. I definitely have the things I need in college, and my family can help me out. But I cant generalize that and speak for everyone. So I want to be a voice for those who arent in the fortunate position Im in. The sign was to be the voice. A voice doesnt travel as far.Hayes said he does have access to exceptional medical care, travel and gear by being a high-profile student-athlete. He said he receives $1,500 a month in a cost-of-attendance stipend. Athletes have money for food,?according to Hayes, but?most of them dont have the necessary funds?for extracurricular activities, going out or even buying plane tickets to go home.Hayes said his food stipend ran out once.We ran out of money on our [Wiscconsin] eating cards and dining hall money, Hayes said.dddddddddddd There were a couple of weeks we didnt have money for food, so we were just hanging around the locker room and trying to find whatever was in there or at a training table close by. We werent allowed to get more money.Hayes said he would be fine with a payment system in which the best players on the team received more than the bench players.(Former Badger) Frank [Kaminsky] got more playing time than one of the guys at the end of the bench because he was a better player. If we were in the market where they were allowed to pay us for our image likeness and Frank is the better player and gets more, then thats understandable, Hayes said. Its like you would with anything in the world not related to sports. The better you are in your job, the higher you get paid for it.Hayes said college athletes should be able to market themselves for money and take advantage of their likeness and image. If that were to happen, then maybe the schools wouldnt necessarily have to pay any players. If you just allowed outside sources to market and pick and choose who they want, then theres no way you can say someone is doing something unfairly.Hayes also spoke about two high-profile social justice issues. He said he supported teammate Bronson Koenigs decision to?protest against the Dakota Pipeline project on protected Native American lands. Hayes added that no discussions have taken place on whether the Badgers?will protest or do anything symbolic during the national anthem. So far, we havent discussed as a team anything, and myself personally, I havent pegged anything that I was going to do or if I will do anything, Hayes said. But I still support (Niners quarterback) Colin Kaepernick 100 percent. He has a right, and hes kneeling for a flag that promotes justice and equality for all, and justice and equality isnt given to all in this country. ' ' '
