MIAMI -- With New York Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom coming off a one-hit shutout, Miami Marlins ace Jose Fernandez geared up for a pitching duel Saturday night.Jose knows he has Jacob on the other side of the field capable of throwing zeroes all night, Marlins manager Don Mattingly said.DeGrom didnt blank Miami for long, however. He failed to make it out of the fourth inning, and Fernandez and the Marlins beat the Mets 7-2.DeGrom (6-5) allowed 10 hits and five runs, both season highs, and lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his shortest outing since August.I wasnt very good, deGrom said. Seemingly everything I threw went down the middle, and I paid for it.Giancarlo Stanton homered and had his first four-hit game since 2012, driving in three runs to give Fernandez (12-4) all the support he needed.Fernandez gave up two runs in seven innings to match his career high for victories, achieved in his 2013 rookie season. He also had two hits, hiking his average to .265, and drove in the first run.Even when I was at the plate, I was ready to do whatever it takes to win this game, Fernandez said. Nothing unusual there -- he improved to 26-1 with a 1.47 ERA in 37 starts at Marlins Park.Home Run Derby winner Stanton put Miami ahead to stay in the third inning when he hit a majestic two-run homer off the left-field scoreboard above the 401-foot sign. He added an RBI single in the fourth, and singled in the first and sixth, hiking his average to .241 after a prolonged slump. When asked what he saw from Stanton, deGrom answered with a frown.I saw him hit a ball pretty far over the wall, deGrom said. The right-hander allowed at least two baserunners in every inning he worked, and his ERA rose to 2.73.He didnt have command of any of his pitches, manager Terry Collins said. There were a lot of balls in the middle of the plate, and a lot of balls up. Very uncharacteristic, but you know it happens.DeGrom was throwing only in the low 90s in his final inning, several notches below his norm.He was probably tired, Collins said. Those were stressful innings from the start to when he came out of the game, but no Im not concerned.DeGroms best moment came at the plate, where he doubled to lead off the third, his first extra-base hit since July 2015. He scored on a single by Yoenis Cespedes, and James Loneys sacrifice fly gave the Mets a 2-1 lead. But that was all they managed against Fernandez. He hit 99 mph in the first inning, and his final pitch was a 98-mph fastball to Cespedes for strike three.Christian Yelich led off the Miami third with a single, and Stanton dented the scoreboard with a homer that landed between the words BALLS and STRIKES.I didnt break any lights, Stanton said, so that was good.Stanton went 3 for 3 versus deGrom. Yelich and Adeiny Hechavarria had two hits apiece against the Mets starter.Guys did a really good job with deGrom battling him and making him throw a bunch of pitches, Mattingly said. Weve been good with those type of guys. Its the soft-tossing guys weve had a lot of trouble with.SUZUKI UPDATEMiamis Ichiro Suzuki grounded out as a pinch hitter to end the eighth and remained four hits shy of 3,000.TRAINERS ROOMMets: 1B Lucas Duda (back) visited the team, took swings for the first time since his injury and said he hopes to be ready for a rehab assignment in a couple of weeks. I feel good. Im progressing on the right track, said Duda, who hasnt faced pitching yet.UP NEXTLHP Steven Matz (7-6, 3.56) is scheduled to start Sunday for the Mets in the rubber game of the series against RHP Jose Urena (1-1, 6.23). Matz is 0-2 with a 7.07 ERA in three career starts against Miami. Cheap Celtics Jerseys . Zetterberg has 11 goals and 19 assists for a team-high 30 points, and Datsyuk has a team-high 12 goals and 11 assists.Louis Oosthuizen hopes to put his recent swing troubles behind him when he features in this weeks inaugural Maybank Championship Malaysia. The South African has struggled to find his rhythm during the early-season events, missing the cut in two of his four starts and not taking advantage of a strong start to the week at the Qatar Masters.Oosthuizens ball-striking wasnt on-song in Doha, where after moving in to a share of the first-round lead he stuttered on the Friday and carded successive 71s over the weekend. The former Masters champion then suffered an early exit a week later in Dubai, but he remains upbeat after bouncing back from a pair of double bogeys on the Friday to post three birdies on the back nine. Oosthuizen missed the cut at the Dubai Desert Classic I lost my rhythm a little on the Friday in Qatar, Oosthuizen said on Tuesday. I struggled with my ball flight and when its windy thats the last thing you want to happen. It was the same again for the first 27 holes in Dubai, I couldnt find the flight I was looking for. But I played a lot better on my back nine on Friday.I struck it really well and made some good birdies, and even though it wasnt enough to make the cut I was still able to take a lot from it.The world No 21 withdrew from Tuesdays Pro-Am after flight issues saw him arrive in Kuala Lumpur later than planned, but he expects to be 100% ready when he tees off alongside recent Dubai Desert Classic champion Danny Willett and former Malaysian Open winner Thongchai Jaidee on Thursday. Oosthuizens previous win in Kuala Lumpur came at the 2012 Malaysian Open Delays in New York and Dubai saw him take more than 36 hours to get from his Florida homme, although Oosthuizen can take encouragement from the fact his previous win in Malaysia came after similar issues.ddddddddddddIm struggling to stay awake to be honest with you! Oosthuizen added. Its just one of those things, with the amount of travelling we do its bound to happen at some time. Hopefully its a good omen after what happened four years ago when we couldnt get out of Augusta on the Sunday night because the play-off [with Bubba Watson] finished late, and I didnt end up arriving here until the Wednesday. So at least this time Ive given myself an extra 24 hours to prepare! Ive got a day to rest up and get some sleep, so hopefully by tomorrow I should be fine and ready to go. Willett has finished inside the top-four in four of his past six starts Willett took a week off after his impressive victory in last months Desert Swing finale moved him to a career-high world No 1, but returns as one of five of Europes EurAsia Cup winning squad to join captain Darren Clarke in this weeks field. Its a new tournament so Ive never played this course before, and its always exciting to take on a new challenge, Willett told a pre-tournament press conference on Tuesday. Its a bit different to most of the courses the guys are used to playing on the Tour. Its not wide open fairways or particularly long, so its going to take some shot-making to do well. Youve got to drive the ball well and put yourself in position on the fairways. So its very old school, but Im sure were going to have a fair bit of fun out there this week.Watch the Maybank Championship Malaysia throughout the week live on Sky Sports 4 - your home of golf Also See: Recap: Oosthuizens 2012 win Watch: Season Pass New look to 2016 schedule Golf live on Sky Sports 4 ' ' '

Glamorgan 159 for 8 (Lloyd 81, Kulasekara 4-28) beat Sussex 113 (van der Gugten 4-17) by 46 runsScorecard Glamorgan continued their remarkable form in the NatWest T20 Blast against Sussex with a win that extended their undefeated run in the competition to seven matches.A 55-ball 81 from David Lloyd set up a total that was about par on a slow Cardiff pitch but it was made to look a lot more valuable than that when Glamorgans Dutch bowler Timm van der Gugten ripped apart the Sussex top order at the start of the Sussex chase and finished with 4 for 17.The story of Glamorgans season has been the coming of age of Lloyd. He made his third first-class hundred of the season against these same opponents on Wednesday and tonight he continued that fine run of form. He looked all set to pass his career best T20 score of 97 not out made against Kent this season but he fell in the 17th over when He mistimed a pull shot off Chris Jordan.Lloyd shared decent partnerships with Colin Ingram and Jacques Rudolph, but he was the most impressive Glamorgan batsman by a distance. The next highest score was Rudolph with 24 who had dropped himself down to No. 4 as he searches for a return to form.Rudolph had looked very well set in this innings, at one point hitting a massive six off Chris Nash that is now residing at the bottom of the River Taff. Just when it appeared that he might make his first truly significant T20 contribution of 2016 he drilled a ball from Nuwan Kulasekara to Luke Wright in the covers.A four-over spell from England bowlers Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills in the final overs prevented Glamorgan from getting a truly daunting total. Mills was particularly impressive as he took two wickets for five runs in his two overs at the death. He bowled with pace and with accuracy showing why he made his England bow this week.Glamorgan stumbled to a total of 159 for 8, but it ended up being more than enough as the ever more impressive van der Gugten took three wickets in three overs at the start of the Sussex innings to leave them 22 for 3 in the seventh over. With the Sussex top order gone the run rate just kept going up, but a partnership between Ross Taylor and Matt Machan that was worth 37 gave Sussex some hope. When both of those men fell within seven balls of each other any feint hopes of an away win were gone. With that partnership broken it became a procession of Sussex wickets as they finished on 113 all out. Michael Hogan, Craig Meschede and Graham Wagg picked up two wickets.Shaun Tait bowled very fast on his return to Glamorgan after his brief spell with the club in 2010 but he was the only seamer to go wicketless. The Blues went top of the Premier League thanks to Diego Costas 41st-minute winner at the Riverside on Sunday. But their credentials will be tested over the next fortnight as they face Tottenham and then Manchester City. It was very important, Conte told Sky Sports. Today it was very important because these are tricky games. Now we have the week to prepare for a tough game against a strong team in Tottenham. It was a good performance against a very strong team, they drew with Arsenal and City, for this reason I am pleased with our performance. We played a good game, against good opposition, and created many chances to score the second goal. Its important to kill the game if you have chances because anything can happen from corners and crosses, but I am pleased. FT Middlesbrough 0 - 1 Chelsea The win is Chelseas sixth in a row and also their sixth successive clean sheet.ddddddddddddThe impressive run of form comes on the back of their 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, when they switched to three at the back. Its not easy, said Conte. We must not forget how difficult a month ago was, but we have to continue with trust and with our fans, they were against fantastic.Conte also praised Costa, who scored his 10th league goal of the season.Diego is playing good football, with and without the ball, he said. And Pedro and Eden [Hazard], they are very important for our balance. They are working very hard for the team.Diego is always in the action, he is a fantastic striker and is showing this. COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio States usually crisp passing game was mostly shut down by Indiana on Saturday so J.T. Barrett had to get it done on the ground.Barrett rushed a career-high 26 times for 137 yards and a touchdown and threw for another score and No. 2 Ohio State beat Indiana 38-17. Barrett was 9-of-23 for 93 yards passing. In my opinion, thats the best quarterback in college ball, Indiana coach Kevin Wilson said.Ohio State (5-0, 2-0 Big Ten) was forced to rely mostly on its ground game, which accounted for 290 yards, and some tough play by its defense -- including a critical fourth-quarter stop on its own 4 yard line following a Barrett interception -- to fend off the Hoosiers, who had upset Michigan State last weekend.Ohio States defense also forced Indiana (3-2, 2-1) to turn the ball over on downs on the Hoosiers own 33 with 5:22 left and the Buckeyes leading 31-17. Five plays later, Barrett hit Dontre Wilson with a 37-yard touchdown pass to put the game out of reach.Safety Malik Hooker sealed the win by picking off Richard Lagow on Indianas next series. The Buckeyes held Indiana to just one score in the second half.Theyre great athletes and they covered our guys, Ohio State guard Billy Price said. Some days you struggle with passing and some days you struggle with the run, and today was one of the days we struggled with the pass. Both teams had trouble establishing any offensive tempo. It was just an awkward game, Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said.Hybrid back Curtis Samuel rushed nine times for 82 yards and a touchdown for the Buckeyes, and tailback Mike Weber ran for 71 yards and two scores.Lagow was 14-of-28 for 182 yards and two touchdowns, but Indiana managed just 99 yards rushing. Indiana had 281 total yards, compared with 383 for the Buckeyes. They have a great defense, Lagow said. Theyre going to be tough for anybody the rest of the year, Thats on us as well as them being good. We didnt hit a couple plays and they made a couple plays.THE TAKEAWAYIndiana: Buoyed by last weeks upset of Michigan State, Indiana was effective at times but couldnt keep up with the more talented Buckeyes.Ohio State: The Buckeyes defense played tough and kept Ohio State in the game. Ohio State showed its passing game can be stopped, but Barrett can find a way to win anyway. Meyer said Barrett carried too many times, and we have to fix it.I didnt throw particularly well in the passing game by any means, Barrett said. I have to do a better job of reading the coverage better and getting the ball to our playmakers.MOMENTUM CHANGER: After Indiana scored to cut the Buckeyes lead to 17-10 with 1:03 left in the first half, Ohio States Parris Campbell ran back the ensuing kickoff 91 yards to the Indiana 6. Two plays later, Barrett ran through the Hoosiers untouched for a touchdown to make it a two-score game at halftime.I didnt really feel anyone near me, Campbell said. I thought I was cruising to the end zone. Im sure Ill get it next time. Going out on the field I felt we needed the momentum back. I knew we needed a big play.QUOTABLEThey put the people in on the goal line for a reason, and I knocked them back and made the tackle for loss, said defensive end Nick Bosa, who with Michael Hill stuffed Indianas Devine Redding on fourth and 1 at the Ohio State 4 in the fourth quarter.POLL IMPLICATIONSAn unimpressive win over an unranked Big Ten team isnt likely to garner Ohio State many more first-place votes.UP NEXTIndiana: The Hoosiers face another stiff test next week at home against undefeated No. 12 Nebraska. The Cornhuskers were off this week.Ohio State: The Buckeyes may face their toughest challenge of the season next week when they play No. 11 Wisconsin on the road. I cant believe race week (read: best week) is upon us. I started my journey to run my eighth marathon 120 days ago, and in four days Ill toe my feet to the line. The path hasnt been the smoothest. I had to miss a whole week of training for foot pain, I didnt finish two workouts within two weeks of the marathon, and there were many days -- even after I completed a run -- when I doubted myself. But sometimes the training is what makes it all worth it.Ive reached the tapering part of the training cycle, which is probably the toughest portion: Ive reduced my running mileage, my food and water intake matters more and sleep is even more important. Meanwhile, I have more and more time to stress about how my body is feeling. So the more you can relax, de-stress, rest and stretch, the better youll feel going in to race day.About 75 percent of the approximately 50,000 participants will be running their first New York City marathon. But even if this is your 50th marathon, race day is always special. Youve put in the work, and now its time to reap the benefits of your dedication. Enjoy the day and the atmosphere and -- above all -- enjoy the people who scream your name, hand you water and make the experience once in a lifetime.I cant predict how Sunday will go, but you can count on this: It will be my fifth New York marathon, Ill have my name written on pink duct tape, espnW will be on my hat, my favorite city will be the background and two million people will be cheering me on. As Kathrine Switzer said, If youre losing faith in human nature, go out and watch a marathon.Whether youre on the streets of New York, running in the race or watching on ABC or ESPN2, the New York City Marathon is a 26.2-mile block party, and I encourage you to join in!Some tips and remindeers for race day:Remember, you paid for this.dddddddddddd Painful or not, at some point you thought this was a good idea.Trust your training. Theres a reason why you train for four months to run for about four hours (give or take). The medal and your celebration drink-of-choice afterward will be worth it.Whether you run your goal time or not, you finished a marathon. At the end of the day, that is pretty cool.New York spectators are loud and exciting, but be careful of the crowd on First Avenue.?They can make you go faster than you maybe should with 10 miles left. At the same time, let them carry you through the pain.Look up from the road. New York is scenic in its own right, so dont forget to look at the worlds best skyline.Duct tape your name to your shirt, or have it written on you somehow. It makes all the difference to the crowd.Youre part of a great parade. Smile, laugh and maybe cry, and at the end of the day be grateful for what your body was able to accomplish.Dont try anything new during the race. You can never have enough body glide.Training Notebook: Longest run:?16 miles. All three of my 16-milers have been completed. Time to taper!! Hardest run:?Final 10-mile tempo run. I had to stop after seven miles because of fatigue and a sore hamstring. Highest weekly mileage:?51 miles. Biggest accomplishment:?Having only three runs standing between me and the starting line!Megan Flood is a seven-time marathoner and half marathoner. She is on a quest to qualify for the Boston Marathon and hopes New York 2016 is her ticket to Boston. You can follow her progress every other week here on espnW.com and on Twitter @meganflood11. NFL seasons arent lost after four weeks. It just feels that way for teams and players falling miles short of expectations. Three underachieving teams and two struggling young quarterbacks headline my five biggest NFL disappointments through Week 4.What has gone wrong and how can get they back on track? Lets take a look.1. The Carolina Panthers go 1-3 and its a total team effort. What has gone wrong:?The 42 league insiders surveyed for our 2016 QB Tiers project disagreed over whether Cam Newton belonged in the top tier. Eighteen placed him in Tier 1 based on Newtons unique skill set and the Panthers nearly total reliance on him offensively. The 24 voters placing Newton in the second tier doubted his ability to function when forced into the pure passing situations every quarterback faces when his defense and running game falter.Newtons struggles early this season are Exhibit A for those who werent ready to place him in the top tier. When the Panthers have fallen behind, robbing Newton of the play-action and run-game components that shelter QBs, the results have not been pretty. He does not consistently put the ball in tight spaces against man coverage when he has to throw it fast, one of the QB Tiers voters said Sunday night. On the other hand, how did Aaron Rodgers fare against the Minnesota Vikings one week before Newton wilted against them? How did the other unanimous Tier 1 QB, Tom Brady, fare against the Denver Broncos one week before Newton faltered against them in the Super Bowl last season (and again in the opener)? Jake McGee Jersey .C. -- Kemba Walker and the Charlotte Bobcats got off to a fast start, and the Sacramento Kings were never quite able to catch up. Ellis Burks Jersey . Parker had 26 points and eight assists and San Antonio beat Toronto 112-99 Monday night. "We won that game because of Tony Parkers aggressiveness," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "His juice; his aggression all night long. https://www.cheaprockiesjerseys.us/1214t-daniel-murphy-jersey-rockies.html . LeBron James and Chris Bosh didnt need any more. Williams scored 11 points in 10 minutes, Alan Anderson scored 17 points, and the Brooklyn Nets finished the exhibition season with a 108-87 win over the Miami Heat on Friday night. Fake Rockies Jerseys . Ouellette, from Montreal, already has three Olympic gold medals since joining the team in 1999. Brendan Rodgers Jersey . PAUL, Minn. RALEIGH, N.C. -- Ryan Finley looked at ease as North Carolina States starting quarterback. Of course, he didnt need to do a lot of heavy lifting with Jaylen Samuels and Matt Dayes repeatedly getting to the end zone.Samuels and Dayes combined to score five touchdowns to help N.C. State beat William & Mary 48-14 on Thursday night, an easy win to open the season and build confidence with Finley running the Wolfpacks new offense.Finley had battled Jalan McClendon through preseason camp for the starting job. The graduate transfer from Boise State did enough to get the first gameday shot, then directed touchdown drives on his four first-half series to start Dave Doerens fourth season. At the end of the day we just went out and executed and got our athletes the ball in space, said Finley, who completed 17 of 21 passes for 174 yards and two scores.Steve Cluley ran and threw for scores for the Tribe (0-1), who came in ranked No. 10 in the Championship Subdivision ranks. But they couldnt keep up in a 21-point second quarter by the Wolfpack that may have also solidified Finleys hold on the starting job in the offense installed by Eli Drinkwitz -- who coached Finley at Boise State last year.Finley made a series of easy throws and distributed the ball to playmakers Dayes and Samuels, completing his first nine passes.Hes just got command, Doeren said. Hes not nervous at all. He just played. And I thought he looked really comfortable.Meanwhile, McClendon made a costly mistake in his first series. He rolled right toward the sideline under pressure, then threw late and high for an interception. The redshirt sophomore didnt make it back on the field again until the fourth quarter.William & Mary had just 168 total yards, with top tailback Kendell Anderson getting just five touches after being questionable with a shoulder injury. Cluley threw two interceptions. It was a very physical game and it took its toll on us, Tribe coach Jimmye Laycock said. I like to think that we could have played better but dont know if we could have with as touugh as they are.ddddddddddddTHE TAKEAWAYWILLIAM & MARY: The Tribe opened with a long touchdown drive but things soon fell apart. Then again, its the kind of thing that can happen on the road against a Bowl Subdivision team. Move on.N.C. STATE: Doeren cautioned this week that the Week 1 starting QB wouldnt necessarily be starter all year. That makes Finleys performance little more than a good start in a gameday audition against an overmatched opponent for now, though Doeren acknowledged it also could mean another start next week.PENALTY PROBLEMWhile Doeren was unhappy with the Wolfpacks seven penalties for 80 yards, one stood out in particular.Junior defensive end Kentavius Street made a third-down sack but was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after ripping off his helmet to celebrate while motioning and pointing to the crowd. That gave the Tribe a first down and sent Street to the sideline, though Josh Jones bailed him out with an interception two plays later to avoid a score on a once-dead drive.Really disappointed, particularly on some of the stupid stuff, taking a helmet off after you get a big play, Doeren said. Act like youve been there before. Its stuff that weve got to get fixed and we will get it fixed this week.SUCCESSFUL RETURNDayes was in position to become the Wolfpacks first 1,000-yard rusher since 2002 last year before a foot injury sidelined him for the final five games. The senior ran 23 times for 138 yards and two touchdowns to go with a pair of catches for 18 yards.UP NEXTWILLIAM & MARY: The Tribe will aim to improve to 7-0 against instate program Hampton on the road.N.C. STATE: The Wolfpack wont have an easy trip to East Carolina, which will boast a rowdy crowd eager to see the Pirates stick it to their power-conference instate foe.---Follow Aaron Beard on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/aaronbeardap and the APs college football site at http://collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '

This post contains spoilers. Will Baker (B.J. Britt) has returned! Ginny Bakers (Kylie Bunbury) mysterious older brother had disappeared since the second episode, and I wont lie, I kind of thought he was dead.Sometimes this show does things that dont make sense, like dangle Ginnys brother in front of us and not follow up on the storyline. Fans have long memories (ask me how I feel about Aria not being at Callie and Arizonas wedding in the seventh season of Greys Anatomy), so it seemed odd, if not inexplicable, to know that Will existed, but was absent from the MLB All-Star Game and his sisters on-field brawl. However, the writers were kind enough to explain why Ginnys brother went MIA for the majority of the season. Will is apparently wrapped up in some shady business, and Amelia Slater (Ginnys agent, played by Ali Larter) is doing her best to manage everything away, as usual. In fact, Will did show up to his sisters second start with one hell of a shiner -- thanks to being behind on a loan payment -- and Amelia handed him a check, and told him to get going so he wouldnt be a distraction.Im sure most people are fed up with Amelias micromanaging of Ginnys life, and her interactions with Will come off as a little patronizing, which isnt helped by the fact that they are racialized. The optics of a wealthy white woman publicly shaming a black man over finances are not great for her, no matter how good her intentions might be. The admonishment she received from Evelyn Sanders (Meagan Holder), the wife of Ginnys teammate Blip, was more than just the acknowledgement that putting Wills business in the street is awkward as hell; there was a watch it tone, which probably had a double meaning. This show has proven itself to be all about identity politics, so theres no way the writers missed any part of that dynamic. Will has some sort of business plan for which he wants Ginnys backing, and Amelia is totally suspicious. And honestly, I dont really blame her. Hes Ginnys brother, and I want to believe he has her best interests in mind and is not just trying to make a buck for himself. But he is acting shady.Additionally, who knew a rain delay could provide such a dramatic background? Is this what happens in the majors? I have questions. In other news, theres trouble in paradise. This episode featured some heavy squabbling between Ginny and catcher Mike Lawson (Mark-Paul Gosselaar), which is sure to give the #Bawson fandom heart palpiitations.dddddddddddd. The two of them couldnt be chummy forever, but I would love to see some more sophisticated drama than Mike lashing out at Ginny over the Padres benching him for a game and shopping him around for a trade. However, Mikes barrage of bitterness was quickly tempered when fellow player Omar Robles (Jason Canela) confides in Mike and Blip that he thinks he has feelings for Ginny. Mike dismisses the thought with a spirited explanation of how Robles doesnt know Ginny at all, and if he did ? hed know that she hums Katy Perry songs horribly off-key, and that she loves grape soda and hates cilantro. He declares to Robles, You dont have feelings for her.But everyone, including Robles and Blip, knows that hes talking to himself. After acknowledging to himself that he has feelings for Ginny, Mike tells general manager Oscar Arguella (Mark Consuelos) that he wants to be traded to Chicago. Couple that with the promo for the next episode, which shows Ginny and Mike getting awfully close, and the #Bawson followers were sent into a frenzy. The idea of Ginny and Mike being a thing is kind of cute, but Im pissed off about it. Theres the obvious fact that Ginny is 13 years Mikes junior and the cliché of a team-based romance budding, just because a woman has joined the majors. Plus, theres the anger I feel as a queer person who played sports growing up in a heterosexist environment where crushes on teammates were not cute.Theres also something tone-deaf about the way Ginnys teammates flirt with her and the way Mike has developed feelings. I cant help but feel that if Ginny Baker was Jeff Baker and the first openly gay pitcher in MLB, the working environment wouldnt be nearly as cute.No one would want him to see them naked; no one would be flirting with him. But, because everyone is straight, a teammate romance is forbidden love. Its playful and sexy. Never mind the fact that in real life, the fear of intra-team romances has created homophobic environments on many a ball club.Ive been hoping the writers wouldnt take this storyline there because it does everyone a disservice, but it looks like they are. It bums me out. I hoped they were better than this, which reminds me: Where is that waitress when I need her? Whats her name? Cara?Bring back Cara! At least shes not Ginnys freaking teammate. ' ' '

PHILADELPHIA -- Shavar Newkirk scored 28 points and Lamarr Kimble added 16 -- both career highs -- to help Saint Josephs hold on for a 77-76 win over Toledo in the season opener for both teams on Saturday night.Newkirk hit 9 of 16 from the field, including 3 of 4 from 3-point range, with a career-best seven rebounds and three assists. James Demery added 11 points and tied a career high with eight rebounds.Steve Taylor Jr.s jumper gave Toledo a 71-70 lead with 2:04 to play but St. Joes got a pair of offensive rebounds on its next possession before a putback by Markell Lodge, and then a jumper and two free throws by Newkirk, gave the Hawks the lead -- 76-71 -- for good.Jonathan Williams led Toledo with 18 points. How great will be revealed in the next couple of days at the board of governors meeting in Pebble Beach, Calif. Finally on track after a disastrous start to the season, West Ham United seek their first winning streak of the season Saturday when they host last-place Sunderland at Olympic Stadium. After claiming just one victory from their first six matches, the Hammers (2-1-5) took four points on either side of the international break, posting a draw versus Middlesbrough on Oct. 1 before emerging with a 1-0 victory at Crystal Palace last Saturday. Manuel Lanzini scored in the 19th minute for West Ham, who played the final quarter-hour with 10 men after Aaron Cresswell was booked twice in rapid fashion by referee Martin Atkinson.Im very happy and we needed the three points, Lanzini told West Hams official website. We were coming into the game off the back of some poor results and had made a bad start to the season. But we managed to get the win in what was a tough game and we have to carry on in this vein.Doing so at home has been a sore spot as the Hammers are transitioning from the cauldron-like atmosphere of Upton Park to their new London digs. After opening Premier League play in Olympic Stadium with a 1-0 victory over Bournemouth on Aug. 21, West Ham are winless in three (0-1-2) there while being outscored 8-3.But the creaky defence that shipped 14 goals during a four-match skid has tightened to concede just one in the last two matches. Manager Slaven Bilic feels the win has lifted spirits around the team, and that theyre ready to get back to showing the form that resulted in a top-seven finish last season.I hope that period for us is over now, Bilic said, referring to the losing streak. You can talk, you can analyse, you be positive but the thing that gets the confidence back is if you win a game, especially with a clean sheet in a London derby.Cresswells absence via suspension will cause some headaches for Bilic since fellow left back Arthur Masuaku is also unavailable due to injury. While West Ham appear to be putting their early season struggles behind them, the fall once more continues to be anything but kind to Sunderland (0-2-6). Rooted to the bottom of the table, this is the seventh consecutive season the Black Cats are entering the ninth matchday with two wins or fewer and the fifth straight with one or no victories.David Moyes team needs a draw to equal last seasons horrid start, which then required Sam Allardyce to extricate Sunderland from their annual lengthy flirtation with the drop.ddddddddddddThis time around, Moyes continues to struggle to find answers offensively as the Black Cats have a Premier League-worst six goals and were blanked 2-0 at Stoke City last weekend. But team chairman Martin Bain spoke to their official website and is giving his full backing to Moyes as the two try to rebuild a team with an eye on restoring the clubs identity over the long haul.I think its apparent to everyone that we have a journey to embark upon here, so when I first met David we obviously had to discuss a little bit about the past, but together, working as a partnership, its very much about how we cant change the past but we can certainly change the future, Bain said.We went to get back to the basics and we have a football club here that has to be very synonymous with its north-east identity, and I think the fans want that because -- this isntt to be disparaging to anything thats gone before -- I think its probably lost its identity, so therefore lets do the basics correctly, build and take a long-term approach.Moyes has yet to find a successful approach outside the Stadium of Light thus far, with Sunderland taking one point from four matches and only Jermaine Defoe scoring. The former England national has both road goals, and the Black Cats have scored just one goal in the run of play in those 360 minutes.Autumn struggles, however, have been the norm this decade rather than the exception. In the past seven seasons, Sunderland are a ghastly 1-14-16 in road matches spanning the first nine matchdays of each campaign. The lone victory being a 2-0 triumph at Bolton Wanderers exactly five years ago to Saturdays match date of Oct. 22.West Ham are unbeaten in their last six (3-3-0) against Sunderland since a 3-0 loss in the North East on Jan. 12, 2013. Like most teams, the Black Cats are hoping Olympic Stadium will bring better fortunes than Upton Park -- Sunderland have not breached the Hammers goal in London for the past 351 minutes, going 0-2-2 in that span. For a kid that grew up Washington, Im extremely proud of everything we have been able to accomplish over the last 19 years -- both on and off the track. Ive enjoyed every minute. Im excited about the next chapter of my life, and I look forward to exploring other opportunities -- particularly in radio and television -- both inside and outside of NASCAR.Biffle won 19 races in NASCARs top series and twice contended for the Cup championship late in the season. He is a true racer who has always exhibited a will to win and an intense passion for speed. For almost two decades Greg has given us an opportunity to run up front and compete for wins.Greg exemplifies what every owner hopes for in a driver and Im extremely thankful for having him as part of our organization. Rage.In a divided America, the political conventions are sure to arouse those sensations among the millions of viewers tuned in. Then in a commercial break, an electric guitar will blare the final lines of the The Star-Spangled Banner over images of a diverse group of U.S. athletes tearing up as they heard their national anthem during 2012 Olympic medal ceremonies. The words flash by on the screen, white on a black background, between the shots of sobbing and beaming champions: FOR 17 DAYS ... WE ARE ALL ... UNITED. The 30-second spot closes with a rising American flag, the graphic for NBCs Rio Games coverage and the date of the opening ceremony.NBC is buying ad time on other networks during both conventions the next two weeks, seeking a receptive audience for a not-so-subtle message. The country is more partisan, seemingly, than its ever been, said John Miller, the chief marketing officer for NBC Olympics. And for 17 days, we say were all united. For 17 days, we all root for Team USA. Weve got to put everything aside for a minute. The ad debuted March 15, the day of crucial primaries in Ohio and Florida, and aired on CNN and Fox News along with NBC networks. It appeared frequently during NBCs coverage of the Olympic trials, but it will again accompany non-sports fare at the conventions.Any place theyre talking about politics, thats the spot were going to run, Miller told The Associated Press last week. With so much bleak news over the past few weeks -- terrorist attacks, shootings and political division -- another NBC ad promotes the message of global unity, with athletes narrating scenes of competitors from different countries embracing.I dont know of anything else in the world, the voiceover goes, that brings people together and empowers people so purely as the Olympics does. The motivation for NBC in these spots isnt just to lure in viewers hoping for a break from the news of the day. Its also to seek to frame the Olympics as a pure, inspiring event amid the troubles swirling around the Rio Games -- from the Zika virus to Brazilian political turmoil, from polluted waters to doping scandals.Miller, once the executive behind NBCs classic must-see TV campaign, was looking to counteract those sorts of concerns before the 2008 Games when he first produced an ad with these themes.dddddddddddd. Beijing brought its own set of worries, from human rights issues to air pollution. This is the part of the story where Miller mentions Yoko Ono. He went to John Lennons widow to buy the rights to Imagine for a 60-second spot with a message of global unity.NBC tested the commercial with potential viewers, and Miller expected it to do well with an older audience. The way the network sells advertising for the Olympics, what matters is the number of households tuned in more than the demographics. So Miller wouldnt have been too alarmed if the spot captivated older viewers but flopped with younger ones.I specifically made it a little schmaltzy to capture that older audience, he recalled. To his shock, the ad, while popular with all ages, tested best with the 18-to-34-year-old range. As he summed up the explanation those younger viewers would relate: The country had been at war at least half of their memorable lives. That notion of American unity, as well as global unity, is extraordinarily strong and resonates with the young as well as the old, Miller said. But it even resonates more strongly with the young. So the theme became a valuable one for NBC to promote both Summer and Winter Games, a way to connect with younger viewers who will one day make up the main audience under the networks lengthy contract to broadcast the Olympics. Miller acknowledged NBC is probably pushing that refrain even harder this time around. It seems to be more appropriate now than ever, he said.NBC dives deep into its research of Olympic viewership, though its never looked specifically into whether depressing news in the real world makes viewers more likely to tune in. As it happens, the Beijing Games marked the start of an upswing for Olympic ratings in the United States.Jim Bell, the executive producer for NBC Olympics, doesnt have any numbers to prove why exactly viewers tune in, but he does know what he keeps hearing from acquaintances who tell him theyre looking forward to the Rio Games: How they need a break -- whether its from their job, or the news cycle, or their kids. Sterling HolyWhiteMountain is a fiction writer and essayist. He currently lives on the Blackfeet Reservation, and directs the writing center at Blackfeet Community College. When I think about the Cleveland Indians I think about growing up on the Blackfeet Reservation in northwest Montana. I think about going out with my friends in the summer evenings to hit softballs and, when there werent too many cars parked nearby, baseballs. And I think about a hat I wore all the time, sprung from that common mid-90s mold, with a huge, grinning Wahoo stretched across the front. I was as much an Indians fan as you can be in a state where baseball isnt a thing, on a reservation where basketball is the only thing, at a time when professional sports on TV were not easily accessible.Though I cant say for sure, my identification with the team was probably twofold. I had some sense that I was an Indian, in particular Blackfeet, and the goofy iconography and name were familiar. The name of our high school basketball team is simply the Browning Indians. Kids on this reservation, like kids on many reservations, grow up hearing older people refer to themselves as Indians, though it is becoming more common now for people to refer to themselves by their respective tribal names, in their respective languages, those indigenous languages that precede the arrival of English in North America by millennia. And Wahoo-like imagery is still not uncommon in Indian Country, though it is typically used for humorous or ironic purposes -- our way of turning the stereotype on its red face. For many reservation people, the truth of the Wahoo image has been slow to arrive. Even if we have difficulty admitting it, were aware that Indian people come in all shapes, sizes, colors and attitudes. Although Wahoo is based on a degrading stereotype stemming from a time when America was trying to destroy American Indian people while simultaneously mocking and romanticizing us, it is difficult for that stereotype to take hold in a place where 99 percent of the people are Indian. Like people in any dynamic community, we see each other every day (for better and for worse). There is a palpable distance between the falsehood of the stereotype and our lived experience; Wahoo is overcome by the reality of real Indians, with real names, real hungers, real loves and real problems. Yet reservation Indians live with the difficulties of the noble-savage stereotype each time we cross the boundary lines of our respective homelands and enter that other world called America. We deal with the difficulty of overwhelming American ignorance regarding Indian people -- something Indians who live off-reservation deal with every day. These issues of stereotype are, however, familiar by now, and it has been the great failure of the Indian-mascot debate to connect the issue to something other than racism and the self-esteem of individual Indian people. What remains unaddressed is the true history of Indian Country, which is to say the true history of the United States: a story of abrogated treaties, of tribal sovereignty limited by Congressional law and of specious Supreme Court decisions, all of which have either hampered or destroyed the ability of tribal people to govern themselves as political sovereigns on their own land. It is this history that created a set of systems that keep tribal nations locked in a suffocating political and economic limbo. American Indians are not minorities in any traditional sense. We are the descendants of the original majority, citizens of over 500 distinct tribes, and holders of special legal and political status resulting from the treaties we signed with the U.S. government, the same government that broke every one of those agreements.Right now, while the Cleveland Indians have a chance to win their first World Series since 1948, the most significant American Indian protest of the last 40 years is taking place just north of the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota. At Sacred Stone Camp, hundreds and sometimes thousands of people have been camped for months, protesting an oil pipeline whose route crosses land taken from the Lakota people by Congress, a violation of an 1868 treaty between the Sioux and the United States. More than a hundred peaceful protesters have been arrested in the last week alone, and, as construction has brought the pipeline nearer to the Missouri River, neither side has shown any sign of backing down.It is a strange thing to consider, that while the Cleveland Indians play a baseball game televised to millions of elated fans, all of whom will see the Indians egregious mascot paraded across their TV screens, real Indians will be standing in the way of a pipeline that could endanger not only the water supply of multiple reservations, but also the lower halves of both the Missouri and Mississippi River ecosystems. These latter Indians are the ones I know. The ones who assert their sovereign rights even when those rights are not recognized. The ones who travel from all over the country to support a particular tribes cause because, though we are all distinct peoples, we are nonetheless all in this together. The ones who will laugh, as we American Indians tend to do, even in the darkest of circumstances.Because I cannot be in North Dakota this week, I will undertake my own lesser protest action, that of bearing witness to the World Series. I will bear witness to how far we havent come since the time of broken treaties. I will bear witness to the distance between here and a future when tribal nations can govern themselves without U.S. federal oversight. I will bear witness to Wahoo, who is not merely a symbol of disrespect, but one that reminds Americans and American Indians alike how the United States has failed to honor its agreements with tribal people. And while I watch this Series, my nieces and nephews will surely be around, because they are always around, doing what little kids do. Each one of them beautiful, each one of them Blackfeet, each one of them nothing like Indians are supposed to look. I will watch this Series for them, because, despite the resurgence of Wahoo imagery, it will not always be this way. Someday, when there is less money to be made, Cleveland will come to its senses. Its so-called chief will fade into Native American studies classrooms and Internet searches, and all of us will be better for the loss. I will watch this Series because I want to tell these kids, when theyre old enough to understand, that once there was a World Series played when the most racist mascot imaginable was everywhere you looked, while at the same time Indians, real ones, were being illegally arrested in another state, peacefully protesting a pipeline that endangered millions of Americans. I will tell them that, despite all of those things being past, the history that made them lives on -- and they will fight that history for the rest of their lives. MADRID -- Atletico Madrid is not used to struggling like this, not under coach Diego Simeone. After its third loss in five Spanish league games on Monday, Atletico dropped to sixth place -- its worst position at this point in the season since Simeone took charge in 2011.The 3-0 loss at Villarreal left Atletico 12 points behind leader Real Madrid after 15 matches. It also trails Barcelona, Sevilla, Villarreal and Real Sociedad. There have been some mistakes, said Simeone, who won the title with Atletico in 2014. We accept the criticism. When a team loses two games in a row, things need to improve.Atletico also lost 1-0 at Bayern Munich in the Champions League, a result that snapped the teams perfect record in the European competition. It was held to a disappointing 0-0 draw at home against Espanyol in its previous Spanish league game. One of its recent losses in the league was a demoralizing 3-0 setback against Madrid at home in the city derby. The team is trying its best to get in position to win, Simeone said. But in these last few games we are not having any luck, especially with the scoring chances, and that leads to losses. We have to keep working, because its the only way we can improve.Atletico has not been worse than third in the league since a fifth-place finish in 2011-12. The club was only 10th after 15 matches that season, but it improved significantly after Simeone took over in December 2011. Atletico was third at the end of the following season and won the league in 2013-14 to end a drought of nearly two decades.Atletico was third again the last two seasons, and now it has some work to do just to secure a Champions League spot.Obviously we have to improve if we want to fight for the spots atop the standings, Atletico captain Gabi Fernandez said. The letdown comes as a surprise as Atletico entered the season with high expectations. Thanks to a significant increase in income from television rights, Simeone was able to add important pieces to the squad and fans expected Atletico to move even closer to the perennial powerhouses of Barcelona and Madrid. But Simeone started experimenting with different formations and the team struggled with inconsistency. The squads offense got a boost but the usually stout defense lost some of its strength. Atletico conceded 11 goals in its last seven league games, and 14 in 15 games, only four goals less than the 18 it conceded in all 38 games in the league last season. We have to improve and stop allowing so many goals, Fernandez said.To make things worse for Simeone, he may be without goalkeeper Jan Oblak for a long period because he dislocated his left shoulder in the game against Villarreal, having to be substituted in the 40th minute at El Madrigal Stadium. Defensive midfielder Tiago Mendes also left the game before halftime because of a discomfort in his right knee.Atleticos next game is Saturday against 10th-place Las Palmas at the Vicente Calderon Stadium. There is still a lot of league ahead of us, Atletico defender Stefan Savic said. Its not all lost. Last year Barcelona was 12 points in front and we got to within two at one stage. We are going through a difficult moment but we will rebound.---Tales Azzoni on Twitter: http://twitter.com/tazzoni Sneakers Outelt Clearance . Western Sydney will be without their captain for the opening round Sydney derby but neither Wanderers coach Tony Popovic or Sydney FC boss Graham Arnold seem to mind.Nikolai Topor-Stanleys mindless challenge on Melbourne City striker Bruno Fornaroli earned the skipper his marching orders in Wednesday nights FFA Cup match. It will also cost him the chance to play in front of at least 70,000 people at ANZ Stadum on October 8 when the two clubs kick off their A-League campaign. The centre-back barged crudely into Fornaroli as halftime approached, with the Wanderers already down 2-0 and clearly second best to City.Popovic suggested Topor-Stanley couldnt be expected to take future matches into account when playing. You dont think about that during the game and Im sure Nikolai didnt either, he said.He made the foul. Im sure when you look back he would rather have not made that challenge. The Asian Champions League-winning coach said he was yet to consider how the 4-1 defeat, or Topor-Stanleys omission would affect his round one sidde.ddddddddddddAt the moment were annoyed we lost, he said.Weve got a strong squad (and) weve certainly got options.Well make sure whoever comes in and plays that first round will be ready.Arnold, who steered his side into the FFA Cup semi finals against Blacktown City on the same night, said the double whammy of a poor Wanderers result and Topor-Stanleys omission wouldnt be an advantage. It gives Popa probably two weeks to work on things and get at them and fire them up, he said.Sometimes you need a loss to get a kick up the backside.Hes got a strong squad. The defeat means Western Sydney will need to wait until 2017 to leave an imprint on the cup competition, having failed once more to make the semi-finals.Popovic said the 4-1 defeat at AAMI Park was tough to stomach. We wanted to go through further than we did last year, he said.We got caught a little bit on the hop and never really recovered. London Welsh are set to discover on Monday whether they will be able to fulfil their fixtures for the season.Chairman Gareth Hawkins admitted on Wednesday that the 131-year-old clubs current business model is totally unsustainable and said they had no alternative but to seek voluntary liquidation. However, the High Court will rule on a winding-up petition from HMRC on Monday. If the court rules in HMRCs favour, London Welsh would cease operations immediately rather than the voluntary liquidation favoured by the club, which would allow them to complete their fixture programme and dispose of assets in an orderly way.Insolvency specialist John Cullen, a partner at Menzies LLP, said: Although in the long term London Welsh RFC will be wound up, it is hoped by both the club and Menzies that the company will enter a voluntary liquidation rather than a compulsory liquidation -- which allows assets and funds to be salvaged and disseminated to creditors in a timely and considered manner. Our hope is that the voluntary liquidation process can be undertaken in a way that secures a future for the club. This begins with ensuring that upcoming fixtures can be honoured, including the Christmas game later this month. If London Welsh are unable to play, knock-on effects could be felt throughout the entire league, as any points won through matches with the club may have to be declared void.If we are able to instigate a voluntary winding-up process, the liquidators and the club will be in a much better position and would hope that the brand and club can continue in some form in the future. However, the decision ultimately lies with the High Court and we wait to hear whether or not a voluntary liquidation will be possible. The intention is for London Welsh to reform in 2017 as a semi-professional outfit and raise £300,000 to regain their place in the Greene King IPA Championship.Established by and for Londons Welsh community in 1885, the club has contributed 177 players to the Wales national team and 43 players to the British and Irish Lions over the years. In 2009, the club went into administration shortly after turning professional but were allowed to continue in the Championship after being bought out.London Welsh moved to Oxford Uniteds Kassam Stadium in 2012 and played matches there for three seasons until returning to Old Deer Park in Richmond in 2015. AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn volleyball team picked up its third-straight victory Sunday afternoon, outlasting Mississippi State in a 3-2 (26-24, 23-25, 25-22, 23-25, 15-11) win in Auburn Arena. The outcome pushed the Tigers to 11-10 overall and 5-3 in Southeastern Conference play.Mississippi State is an aggressive team that plays great defense so we knew this was a match where we had to stay mentally tough, head coach Rick Nold said. It was a big win and were really happy about the outcome. The Tiger defense put together a solid performance against the Bulldogs, finishing with a season-best 14 team blocks and forcing 39 MSU attack errors. Middle blockers Breanna Barksdale and Macy Reece totaled seven blocks a piece, while freshmen Enija Bidzane and Gwyn Jones added five and four, respectively. Reece & Bidzane each notched a career high in the category, while Barksdale tied a season best.Weve put some good time into our blocking over the last couple of weeks, Nold said. Were not a big blocking team based on our size. But we knew that if were disciplined and take spots away, we would be very successful. The Auburn backrow also has a solid day with 58 digs. Junior libero Jesse Earl picked up her 11th 20-dig performance, having a match-high 24 digs. Classmate Kelly Stewart added eight, while Bidzane finished with seven.Junior setter Alexa Filley did a great job spreading out the Auburn offense and keeping the MSU defense guessing. Reece finished with a season-high 12 kills and Barksdale added 11. Jones finished with 10, while Filley chipped in nine. The Bulldogs (11-10, 3-4) were led by outside hitters Evie Grace Singleton and Emily Hill, having 23 and 18 kills, respectively. Libero Cheyenne Spell had a team-high 17 digs and Jelena Vujcin added 11 kills. Riley Duzenack led all student-athletes with five aces.A pair of kills from Courtney Crable annd a service ace by Barksdale lifted the Tigers to a 7-5 lead in the first and a handful Auburn runs pushed the home squad to an 18-11 advantage.dddddddddddd The Bulldogs came out of a timeout strong and pressed a run to lock the set at 18 apiece and the teams exchanged sideouts the rest of the way. A kill from Barksdale made it 24-all and back-to-back Bulldog errors gave Auburn a 26-24 win.The second set saw the visitors take a 13-9 lead halfway through the stanza. A Bidzane ace and another MSU error tied the set at 16 before the Bulldogs pushed to a 23-19 lead. An Auburn error gave MSU set point and the Bulldogs tied the match at one set each, 25-23.MSU used aggressive serving to jump ahead at 4-2 in the third. Two-straight Bulldog errors followed by a Reece/Jones block elevated Auburn to a 12-9 lead and a pair of two-point Tiger rallies made it 19-12. Another run of tough serving brought the Bulldogs within on at 19-18, but the Tigers were too much as a kill from Reece made it 24-22 and another MSU hitting errors gave Auburn a 25-22 victory.Big blocks from Barksdale/Bidzane put the home squad up 4-1 to start the fourth stanza. The Bulldogs servers responded with yet another long run to give MSU a slight 6-5 lead. A kill from Brenna McIlroy sent Auburn on an 8-2 push for a 15-11 advantage, forcing a Bulldog timeout. However, a handful of small MSU rallies lifted the team to a 22-21 lead and the teams went to the fifth with a 25-22 Bulldog win.A trio of MSU attack errors gave Auburn a 6-2 advantage and more Bulldog errors pushed the Tigers to a 10-5 lead. The visitors came within two at 12-10, but kills from McIlroy and Reece made it match point (14-10) and a hard Bidzane swing gave the Tigers the win, 15-11. ' ' '

It was Sept. 8, 1998 -- 18 years ago Thursday -- that a 22-year-old computer programmer, who worked for $40 a day on the St. Louis Cardinals grounds crew, snagged Mark McGwires then-record-breaking home run ball, and gave it back to McGwire for free.Tim Forneris, who is now a public defender in St. Louis, says he wouldnt change a thing about the decision he made.Being part of this moment led to so many other things in my life, Forneris said. The thinking is that money always helps make things easier, but thats not always the case. With lottery winners, it often turns into disaster. While memorabilia experts estimated before the game that the ball could be worth $1 million or more, when Forneris snagged McGwires shortest home run of the 70 hed end up hitting in 1998, he immediately decided that the ball wasnt his to keep or sell. He gave it to the Cardinals slugger in a ceremony that took place on the Busch Stadium field.Forneris just happened to be in the right place to get the low liner over the left field fence, which broke what was then Roger Maris single-season record of 61 home runs. His role on the grounds crew was to open the gate for visiting pitchers to the bullpen. When the ball came over the wall, Forneris said he sprinted from his usual position to a batting cage by the bullpen where the ball had come to rest. Later, he was on the field when McGwire was presented with the ball and some gifts from the team.Forneris didnt ever get financial compensation from the ball, but he did get to meet President Bill Clinton, got a watch from the Cardinals and a Cardinal red minivan from a local Chrysler plant which was touched by his generosity in the face of potential riches. He still has the vehicle, which he said has about 80,000 miles on it.Had Forneris sold the ball, there was a good possibility he could have gotten that $1 million. McGwires last home run ball of the 1998 season, No. 70, sold for $3.05 million. But Forneris only catches himself thinking about the memories instead of the money; memories that are never too far away. Fittingly, Forneris current office phone number ends in 62. Burnley came out on top in a five-goal thriller as strikes from Jeff Hendrick, Stephen Ward and George Boyd ensured the hosts leapt up to 13th in the table on Saturday.Benik Afobe and Charlie Daniels twice reduced Burnleys leads, but its a hangover from last Sundays 4-3 win over Liverpool for Bournemouth, who stay 11th.It was a thrilling encounter from start to finish, although it was the Cherries who started on the front foot and came close on two occasions through Dan Gosling while Afobe tested Tom Heaton between the sticks. The hosts did take the lead when Hendrick controlled a long ball brilliantly before firing a quite unbelievable dipping volley over Artur Boruc. Three minutes later it was two as Ward was on hand to tap home after Boruc spilled Ben Mees header from a corner.Bournemouth managed to reduce the scoreline by half as Afobe converted a neat cross in added time. The second half saw both sides go out to play more attacking football, and with 15 minutes left Burnley looked to have sealed the points as Andre Grays backheel into Boyd was finished off in style from the winger. The visitors had a goal ruled out shortly after when Afobe was penalised for handball, albeit rather harshly. Daniels then made it a nervy four minutes of added time when he rocketed home from inside the area but the Clarets held on for a vital three points. Cheap Retro Jordan . "It doesnt get any better than that," Giambi said. "Im speechless." The Indians are roaring toward October. Giambi belted a two-run, pinch-hit homer with two outs in the ninth inning to give Cleveland a shocking 5-4 win over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night, keeping the Indians up with the lead pack in the AL wild-card race. Fake Jordan . Ashley Youngs cross was inadvertently headed by Chester into his own net in the 66th minute, allowing United to claim a third straight league win. "We had to dig deep with our fighting spirit and weve done that," United striker Wayne Rooney said. Cheap Jordan From China . -- Ty Montgomery had 290 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, and fifth-ranked Stanford held on to beat No. TORONTO -- When he scored it, Nathan MacKinnon thought it was the goal that would advance North America into the World Cup semifinals. You could see it in his face, you could see it in his celebration. His teammates too, they thought this was it. They mobbed MacKinnon with a fervor worthy of a team moving on after beating Team Sweden 4-3 in overtime, with MacKinnon making a series of dazzling moves to beat Henrik Lundqvist. It wasnt until MacKinnon was about to go on TV in a postgame interview immediately after the game that reality hit. Seconds before going on camera, he was told that the Russians still had to lose to Finland on Thursday (3 p.m. ET, ESPN) to keep the kids alive in the World Cup because of North Americas loss to Russia earlier in the World Cup.MacKinnons initial thought? Unprintable. Then he joked with North America teammate Auston Matthews that perhaps he shouldnt have celebrated so hard since they still might be going home. The North Americans need a Finland win to survive in this tournament despite playing the two most entertaining games of the World Cup and despite revealing to the hockey world that the talent coming in this generation is as good as any the sport has seen. This might be it for North America. And its an absolute shame if it is.I think we definitely have turned some heads,?Connor McDavid?said. People didnt know what to expect when we came into?this tournament, but weve beat two good hockey teams, and ultimately maybe even should have beat the Russians. I think weve definitely turned some heads and opened the eyes of everyone what the future of the NHL is like. They have shades of the 1980s Wayne Gretzky Edmonton Oilers in them, a brand of hockey the sport hasnt seen in decades. With the Swedes earning a point by getting to overtime, Sweden and Canada are on a collision course to face each other in the World Cup finals, which is fine. They deserve it. But weve already seen that.Well never see anything quite like what Team North America has produced. McDavid?is a generational talent. Hes the best NHL player to come into the league since Sidney Crosby, and hes playing on a line with the next great star of the Toronto Maple Leafs in Matthews, as if theyve been playing together for years.MacKinnon has re-emerged as one of the great young players in the game. We all knew he could skate like the wind, we had no idea he could be such a force around the net. And that move onn Lundqvist -- unbelievable.dddddddddddd Thats a future Hall of Famer he beat that badly. He had a lot of time. Im just not that patient, said Lundqvist, whose 45-save performance was the only reason the Swedes were in overtime to begin with. I made the first move and I lost.Johnny Gaudreau is a Patrick Kane-esque superstar who is finally getting the stage to show off a skill set that has already won over the city of Calgary. There might be another World Cup. There might even be another Team North America. But there wont be anything quite like this.Hall of Fame coach Scotty Bowman, who has seen as much great hockey as anyone alive, was watching this game at home in Buffalo and spoke for a legion of hockey fans who have fallen for Team North America.Id like to see them play again, he said during a Wednesday evening phone conversation. We all would. He loved the style of play. North America coach Todd McLellan has let his horses run. He has them playing enough defense and, with assistant coach Dave Tippetts assistance, developed a shut-down penalty kill. Bowman appreciates the tempo in which the kids have played the game in this tournament. The best part of the game is the teams, they dont trap. It looked like an old-time hockey game, Bowman said. Theyre not all trying to block shots back in their own end. Theyre on the fast break. Thats what makes it exciting. Thats why they get breakaways. They were counting on their speed and their defense was holding up.While we were all admiring the move MacKinnon made on Lundqvist to win it, Bowman noticed the play Gaudreau made to chase down a rebound and get the puck to MacKinnon for the winner.Gaudreau really made a great play on that goal, Bowman said.It was like that all game. Matthews was stick-handling from his knees. McDavid was flying at mach speed through the neutral zone. Gaudreau was electric on breakaways. At one point, there was a North American power play and the puck was being moved around between Jack Eichel, McDavid, Matthews, Shayne Gostisbehere and Mark Scheifele -- each an emerging star in their own right.Ten years from now, 20 years from now, hockey fans will remember those moments. That is, unless the kids get a chance to replace them with new ones later on in the World Cup.Finland, you know what you have to do. ' ' '

The frustration and losses keep piling up for the Detroit Pistons, who have very little time to correct their mistakes.Boston handed them their third consecutive defeat on Saturday, as Al Horfords putback with 1.3 seconds left allowed the Celtics to pull out a 94-92 victory. The Pistons had been the leagues lone remaining unbeaten team at home before Horford ruined the opener of a four-game homestand. It doesnt get any easier on Monday, when All-Star guard James Harden and the Houston Rockets visit The Palace. Its tough, Detroit coach Stan Van Gundy said. Weve lost three in a row now, six out of eight. Were in a really tough stretch. That weighs on everybody.Van Gundy would like extended practice time to work on some of his teams issues but the rugged schedule wont allow it. The Pistons are in a three-week stretch where they play 13 games, with no more than one day off in-between those games.I think we just have to build better habits, he said. I was talking to (forward) Tobias (Harris) and you can see the difference as we get less and less practice time here. Our habits arent good enough right now to carry us through, and so we had that one real good day in San Antonio (Nov. 10), where we spent a lot time working on getting the ball from side to side and moving the ball. It helped us for a few days. Now were a long way from that.Detroit (6-8) wasnt that far from getting a victory on Saturday. It failed to secure the rebound in the closing seconds and that proved to be the difference. When you get in tight games like that, its all the little things that add up, Harris said. We gave them five points within the span of two seconds at the end of quarters. Its little plays like those that we have to take away and be locked in and focused on. We need every little thing -- every loose ball, every 50-50 ball, every rebound and stuff like that. It will help us be a great team. The Rockets (8-5) are feeling good about themselves after winning two straight, including a 111-102 win over Utah on Saturday. Harden had another stellar outing -- 31 points, 10 assists and no turnovers in 35 minutes. Hes averaging 28.7 points and a league-high 12.5 assists.Houston also got a big night from its young center, Clint Capela, who contributed a career-high 20 points, eight rebounds and five assists. He had a monster game and I dont think that he did anything that he cant keep repeating, Rockets coach Mike DAntoni told the Houston Chronicle. Its just what he does. Hes much more comfortable, I think, offensively.Houston also received some big performances from two veteran bench players who signed with the club as free agents this summer. Guard Eric Gordon had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists, while forward Nene contributed 16 points and six rebounds. Were getting better, Harden told ESPN.com. Were continuing to get better and to grow. Each and every guy knows their role. They do it at a high level, and the result is we dont turn the basketball over and we get really good shots. Nike Air Max 97 Schweiz . Team physician Dr. Steve Traina performed the surgery Friday. Robinson was injured in a spill underneath the Nuggets basket during the first quarter of Wednesday nights loss to the Charlotte Bobcats. DENVER -- Carlos Gonzalez cant ever remember hitting a ball any better or louder.Just a sweet sound coming off the bat, he said. The smooth-swinging slugger hit a three-run homer to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning, Chad Bettis threw efficiently into the seventh and the Colorado Rockies beat the Atlanta Braves 7-3 on Thursday night.Gonzalez drilled a 97 mph fastball from Mike Foltynewicz (3-4) over the fence in right-center. It was Gonzalezs 20th homer of the season and first since participating in the All-Star Home Run Derby.I knew I was going to get one pitch the whole night. That was it, Gonzalez said. Im glad I didnt miss it. I didnt waste that great outing that Bettis was throwing.Bettis (8-6) was in command all night thanks to his curveball. The right-hander allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings. He was cruising through Atlantas lineup until hitting a bump in the seventh when he gave up an RBI double to A.J. Pierzynski.I really liked the way he used his curveball, Rockies manager Walt Weiss explained. Got a lot of strikes and outs with it.Trailing 7-1 in the ninth, the Braves scored twice before the Rockies brought in closer Carlos Estevez with two outs. He got Jace Peterson to roll out to end the game and earn his seventh save. The Rockies have won seven straight over Atlanta at Coors Field.Foltynewicz was both electric and erratic in 5 2/3 innings. He didnt allow a hit until DJ LeMahieus leadoff single in the fourth and struck out five. He walked five. His most costly mistake was the fastball to Gonzalez, who has six seasons with at least 20 homers. You cant fall behind one of the best fastball hitters in the game, Foltynewicz conceded. He was waiting on the inside fastball and he turned on it.Pinch-hitter Mark Reynolds added some insurance with a solo homer in the seventh that went an estimated 484 feet. It was his first pinch-hit homer in two years. He got it good, Weiss said. Pinch-hit homers are nice. There was a crazy play in the eighth with runners on second and third. On a single by Nick Hundley, Trevor Story scored easily but Daniel Descalso nearly collided with shortstop Errick Aybar as Descalso took off from second.dddddddddddd Descalso was thrown out at the plate, but Aybar was called for obstruction. Hundley was credited with one RBI and Aybar was given an error.Pierzynski was ejected on the play for what he said was kicking the ball toward the Rockies dugout. We needed a new ball. Ive done that 100 times over my career, Pierzynski explained. I wasnt looking at him. I didnt say anything to him.I apologized. Maybe I should have bent over and picked it up and rolled it over there?Anthony Recker replaced him and had an RBI double in the ninth, part of a two-run inning off Rockies reliever Jason Motte.TRAINERS ROOMBraves: OF Mallex Smith (broken left thumb) is swinging one-handed and doing some throwing. ... RHP Daniel Winkler (broken right elbow) isnt close to heading out for a rehab assignment, interim manager Brian Snitker said. Winkler is still going through long toss.Rockies: Backup C Tony Wolters wears a bandage on his chin after recently fouling off a bunt attempt in batting practice that struck him in the face. You cant teach stuff like that, Weiss joked. It didnt bother him as Wolters delivered a pinch-hit, RBI double in the eighth. ... Weiss said OF Gerardo Parra (sprained left ankle) is getting closer to a rehab assignment.CONTACTOF Nick Markakis went 32 straight plate appearances without swinging at a pitch and missing. That ended in the ninth when he swung at strike three. He finished 1 for 3.He has such a great eye at the plate, Snitker said. Hes one of the most disciplined hitters that Ive seen.REST DAY3B Nolan Arenado got a rare day off Thursday after struggling at the plate this month. He hasnt homered since July 5 at San Francisco.I run him out there pretty regularly. Hes very durable, Weiss said.UP NEXTThis certainly looks familiar: Jon Gray (5-4) and Julio Teheran (3-8) will face each other Friday night -- the second time in a week. The starters didnt figure into the decision during a 1-0 Atlanta win last Sunday. ' ' '
