This story is part of ESPN The Magazines Oct. 12 Owners Issue. Subscribe today!Chicago BlackhawksOverall:?35 Title track: 2 Ownership: 4 Coaching:?T4 Players: 7 Fan relations: 23 Affordability: 107 Stadium experience: 10 Bang for the buck: 95 Change from last year: -18Blackhawks down! Eight straight playoff berths, three Stanley Cups, a deep roster and one of the best coaches in sports would probably put Chitown higher if it werent for the cost of actually watching all of that in action. The Blackhawks fall 18 spots to 35th overall, despite claiming top-10 ranks in five of our eight categories.Whats goodThe Blackhawks are among sports best in basically every on-ice component. Winning three Cups in seven years is enough to explain why the Hawks place second overall in title track, but the pieces around it also support that ranking. Coach Joel Quenneville and his 801 career coaching wins slide into the fourth overall ranking and a roster that includes Jonathan Toews two-way play, Patrick Kanes 46 goals, two-time Norris Trophy winner Duncan Keith, and Corey Crawfords sparkling .924 save percentage registers as seventh on our rankings -- both tops for NHL teams. A 2015 New York Times article even gives credit for the teams success to owner Rocky Wirtz, who ranks fourth overall, as well. And did we mention that the United Center is 10th overall in stadium experience, too? Not much to complain about in Chicago.Whats badWell, sort of bad. The Blackhawks are a really, really good hockey team, but most fans will have to settle for watching them on television. An average Blackhawks ticket is almost $80, and the average cost of attending a game is $112 -- one of eight NHL teams north of $100. Yes, the team is good, and yes, Chicago is a big market, but thats expensive no matter how you spin it, giving the Hawks an affordability rank of 107. Whats more? The Blackhawks announced in March that average season ticket prices will rise this season by 6 percent, making this the seventh straight year that the team has jacked up costs. But hey, at least youre paying to see wins, right?Whats newThe teams success is undeniable, but a first-round exit from the playoffs potentially hurt its bang for the buck. Chicago fell 31 spots in that category this season, to 95th overall. If the Blackhawks go back to doing Blackhawks things and make yet another deep playoff run, that ranking should jump right back up. No assurances can be made about those ticket prices, though.Next: Los Angeles Kings?| Full rankings Maury Wills Womens Jersey . Not so fast. The Indians needed every bit of their early advantage and survived a harrowing ninth inning for an 8-7 win and their fourth straight victory. "We kind of had to hang on for dear life, but we did," manager Terry Francona said. "We go home happy." Cleveland led 8-3 after five, but Minnesota scored four times in the final three innings. Vinnie Pestano, subbing as closer for the injured Chris Perez, allowed two runs in the ninth, including Chris Parmelees second homer of the game that cut the lead to one. Pestano struck out pinch-hitter Josh Willingham on a 3-2 pitch with the tying run on first for his third save. "We won the game," Pestano said. "Thats the bottom line. If I go out there and give up five runs and we win by one, we win by one." For most of the night, it didnt look like such dramatics would be necessary. Michael Bourn had three hits and three RBIs and Corey Kluber won his third consecutive start. Cleveland took advantage of five first-inning walks to score six runs. Jason Kipnis added three hits to pace the Indians, who are 8-2 since losing eight in a row. Minnesota starter P.J. Walters (2-3) walked five of the nine batters he faced, hit one and didnt get through the first inning when Cleveland had only two hits. Kipnis and Bourn both had two-run singles while Jason Giambi and Drew Stubbs drew bases-loaded walks. Kluber (6-4) gave up three runs in 5 2-3 innings. The right-hander has allowed four earned runs in 21 2-3 innings in his last three starts. "I wasnt as sharp as Id like to be, but there are games when you go out there and hopefully get through it and give your team a chance to win," he said. Kluber ended the Indians eight-game slide when he held Texas to one run in eight innings on June 11. He followed that with eight shutout innings against Washington on June 16. Kluber, who threw 100 pitches Saturday, gave up eight hits, struck out four and walked one. It appeared the game was under control when he was pulled but the Indians needed five relievers to finish the game. "There were some highs and lows," Francona said of his bullpens performance. "Fortunately, the highs won out." Minnesota scored in the seventh and Parmelee homered to lead off the eighth, making it an 8-5 game. The Twins had the tying run at the plate with one out but Rich Hill struck out Mauer and Ryan Doumit. Justin Morneau doubled to begin the ninth and scored on Oswaldo Arcias ground ball for the second out of the inning.dddddddddddd Pestano walked Brian Dozier before finally striking out Winninhgam on his 34th pitch of the inning. "That was a really long inning," Francona said. "Anytime you get up near 30 pitches, thats a long inning." Mauer hit a two-run homer in the first for Minnesota, which has homered in seven straight games. Arcia added a solo shot in the fourth. Walters problems began when he walked Bourn and hit Mike Aviles to start the first. Kipnis double into the left corner tied the score. After Michael Brantley flied out, Carlos Santana and Mark Reynolds walked to load the bases. Walters then walked Giambi, who was batting .180, to force in a run. Lonnie Chisenhall flied out but a walk to Stubbs made it 4-2 and ended Walters night. Bourn greeted Anthony Swarzak with single to centre and Cleveland led 6-2. Walters threw 46 pitches, only 18 of which were strikes in two-thirds of an inning. He failed to pitch into the sixth inning for the first time in six starts this season. "Walters just didnt have it tonight," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "It was just a bad night. He couldnt find anything. Hopefully, we wont see that again from him." Stubbs and Bourn added RBI singles in the fifth off Ryan Pressly. Kipnis, who singled, doubled and tripled, is batting .379 (25-for-66) in 19 games in June. Trevor Plouffe added an RBI single for the Twins in the seventh. Minnesota came to town riding a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox but lost to the Indians 5-1 on Friday. The Twins are 13-7 against Cleveland since June 2, 2012. Indians first baseman Nick Swisher, who has missed six games with a sore left shoulder, will probably return for Sundays series finale or Monday when the Indians open a series in Baltimore. Swisher, who is in a 6-for-55 slump, took batting practice Saturday. NOTES: Perez (strained right rotator cuff) will throw a simulated game Sunday at Double-A Akron. SAN FRANCISCO -- Trevor Story and Brandon Belt, candidates for the final spot on the National League All-Star team, will go head-to-head one last time before fan balloting ends when the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco Giants conclude a three-game series Wednesday night. The Rockies and Giants split the first two games of the series, San Francisco getting a home run from All-Star catcher Buster Posey in a 3-1 win Monday night before Colorado used a three-run homer from one of its All-Stars, third baseman Nolan Arenado, to erase a deficit and even the series with a 7-3 triumph Tuesday.Story and Belt were selected to compete against Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Jake Lamb, Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Ryan Braun and Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Starling Marte in the fan vote that will determine who joins the NL team for next weeks midseason classic in San Diego.Balloting ends Friday. Two members of the Rockies -- Arenado and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez -- and three Giants -- Posey and pitchers Madison Bumgarner and Johnny Cueto -- were among the 34 selected to the NL All-Star team via fan balloting, player votes and manager choices announced Tuesday.Story didnt get the nod Tuesday in a stacked field of NL shortstops. Addison Russell of Chicago Cubs was voted the starter by the fans, while Corey Seager of the Los Angeles Dodgers was the top choice of the players, making him the backup.NL manager Terry Collins opted not to take a third shortstop even though he had qualified candidates, including the Giants Brandon Crawford, who leads NL shortstops with 53 RBI.Story, despite being robbed of a bases-loaded double or triple by a spectacular sliding catch by Giants right fielder Mac Williamson on Tuesday night, ranks second to Crawford in RBI among NL shortstops with 50. He leads NL shortstops in home runs with 19, just missing a 20th with a drive to the center field fence in Tuesdays win.Story went 0-for-5 in the hard-luck game, seeing his average drop to .259.The rookie made an immediate name for himself when he began the season with six home runs in his first four games. He will attempt improve on his gaudy numbers Wednesday when he faces Cueto, who is a candidate to start the All-Star Game. The first-year Giant has won nine games in a row, improving his overall record to 12-1 with a 2.57 ERA.Cuetos last two starts have been rocky, however, as he allowed a combined 10 runs on 15 hits in 13 innings. The Rockies will counter with left-hander Jorge De La Rosa, who will take to the mound with him a 5.98 ERA, second-worst among NL pitchers with nine or more starts this season.De La Rosa (5-5) won four consecutive starts before pitching well in a road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday, when he gave up two runs in seven innings.Belt enters the series finale coming off a two-hit game that raised his season average to .297. Pushing his average over .300 during the balloting period could help his fan appeal.Despite leading all first basemen in doubles with 26, Belt was passed over in the selection of Anthony Rizzo of the Cubs in the fan balloting, Paul Goldschmidt of the Diamondbacks in the player vote and Wil Myers of the San Diego Padres as one of the managers selections.Story will get one additional opportunity to impress the voters when the Rockies begin a four-game home series against the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. Over the last six and half seasons (2010-2016) the NASCAR Xfinity Series has seen 20 first-time series winners, and over that time, six (30 percent) have come from two tracks: Road America and Texas Motor Speedway.Road Americas series first-time winners are Nelson Piquet Jr. (2012), AJ Allmendinger (2013) and Brendan Gaughan (2014). This season, the NASCAR XFINITY Series has seen two new first-time winners -- Daniel Suarez at Michigan and Justin Marks at Mid-Ohio.Brennan Poole joins Brandon Jones, Darrell Wallace Jr., Blake Koch and Ryan Sieg as drivers inside the top-12 in points who are still looking for their first NASCAR Xfinity Series career win. With Chase spots dwindling, Hemric may need a winDaniel Hemric has enjoyed a strong sophomore season, scoring top 10s in all but three races this season. The success has launched him to second in the points standings. But if he doesnt win a race -- which he has yet to do -- all that success might mean nothing. With three races remaining prior to the inaugural NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Chase, chances to lock up a spot are dwindling.ddddddddddddThere have been six winners, who would each take one of the eight Chase spots. If there are two new winners, that would leave Hemric on the outside looking in, regardless of a potential second-place points finish. So, Saturdays Career for Veterans 200 (1 p.m. ET on FS1) holds even more importance to Hemric, who drives for Michigan native Brad Keselowski.Michigan is a very important race for our entire company, Hemric said. Going off of how I ran at Michigan last year and knowing how the truck needs to feel will play big into how we approach practice. The most important thing is making sure the truck is exactly where it needs to be in the race. You have to get your truck to where its not only fast, but it also drives good; thats the key at Michigan. DETROIT -- The Detroit Tigers designated reliever Jose Valverde for assignment Friday, less than two months after bringing the veteran right-hander back to the major leagues for another chance to be the teams closer. Valverde went 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA, converting nine saves in 12 chances. The Tigers will likely use Joaquin Benoit in most save situations for the time being. Detroit has 10 days to trade, release or send Valverde outright to the minors. "We have asked him if he would go to Triple-A for us, and try to work with him there, try to get him straightened out," general manager Dave Dombrowski said. "He did not give us an answer on that. It really doesnt make a difference at this point, since we would still have to get waivers at some time. He was open-minded to it. He didnt say no to it, but he needed some time." The Tigers recalled right-hander Al Alburquerque from Triple-A Toledo to replace Valverde in the bullpen. They also put outfielder Matt Tuiasosopo on the disabled list with a strained left ribcage and recalled outfielder Avisail Garcia from Toledo. The 35-year-old Valverde faltered during the 2012 post-season, and the Tigers were prepared to let him leave via free agency. But he didnt sign anywhere else, and Detroit eventually brought him back on a minor league deal. He was called up to the majors in late April and allowed only one run through his first 12 appearances, but has not looked good at all lately. "We think we have a guy that can still close games for us, if we get him fixed," Dombrowski said. "His velocitys been fine. Of course, he hasnt had his (split-fingered fastball) and hes had command problems. The last couple weeks havent been good. Before that, he threw the ball fine, and thats what were hoping that we can get back. We figure we have nothing to lose to try." Detroit entered the season without much stability at closer when hard-throwing rookie Bruce Rondon failed to win the job during spring training. Benoit is 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA and four saves, and Drew Smyly has also pitched well out of the bullpen. "Benoit, when available, healthy and ready to go and rested, will get most of the closing opportunities," manager Jim Leyland said. "And anything else, well mix and match." Octavio Dotel has hardly pitched this year because of right elbow inflammation. Alburquerque was sent down because of control problems, but he has 26 strikeouts in 14 1-3 innings for Detroit, and the Tigers hope he can give the bullpen a lift now. Dombrowski didnt want to look ahead to the possibility of a trade for help. "Were comfortable with this group right now," he said. The Tigers arent the only team that could use some help in relief. In fact, Detroit won Thursday nights game on a ninth-inning homer by Jhonny Peralta off Bostons Andrew Bailey. The Red Sox are now giving Bailey a break from closing. Manager John Farrell said Koji Uehara would be the choice Friday night if a closer were needed. "If you look out there right now, there are not a lot of shut-down, lock-down closers out there -- anywhere," Dombrowski said. "A lot of people have struggled with the back end of their bullpens." Leyland said he hopes Valverde decides to stay in the organization, but he wasnt about to pressure him publicly. "Whichever way he wants to go, I would respect," Leyland said. CHICAGO -- The Montreal Canadiens started play this weekend by dispatching another Original Six team. Repeating the feat against the Chicago Blackhawks is possible but not probable. While an unbeaten home record has pushed the Canadiens to the top of league standings, theyll take the ice on Sunday evening on Chicagos West Side against the Blackhawks, who have registered points in 10 straight games. After failing to win a Stanley Cup for nearly 50 years, Chicago (10-3-2) has raised three championship banners since 2010 and is playing with the intent of adding more drapery to the rafters. The Blackhawks dropped three of five games to start the season, but even with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Washington Capitals on Friday night, theyve gone 8-0-2 in their last 10 games -- outscoring the opposition 32-18 -- to move atop the Western Conference.Weve been in this stretch for a while now, and weve been extremely fortunate a lot of nights, Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said. We can be better in ways, but well take it.Recent history in the series between two of the leagues legacy franchises has Chicago with a decided edge. In nine matchups dating to October 2009, the Blackhawks are 7-0-2, including 5-0-0 in Chicago.Several players are the driving forces behind the Blackhawks current points streak. Marian Hossa, Artem Anisimov, Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin have combined for 21 goals and 23 assists, and Corey Crawford has gone 6-0-2 with a 1.36 goals-against average, .957 save percentage and two shutouts, both on home ice.Of all those players, Hossa might be the most important. The soon-to-be 38-year-old right winger has scored seven of his eight goals in the last 10 games. He had just 13 in 64 games last season in which he was dinged by nagging injuries.I think hes shooting the puck better, scoring some big goals for us as well. It seems like he has the puck even more than he did before, Quenneville said. Not far behind in importance would be Crawford. The Montreal native is 5-0-2 with a 1.42 GAA, .955 save percentage and one shutout versus his hometown team.Anisimov, who is tied for the team lead with Hossa in goals (8) and Kane in points (17), is expected to play in this game after missing Fridays loss to Washington with an injury, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.While Blackhawks know something about championships in recent years, theyve got nothing on Montreal. The Canadiens have won 23 of them, but none since 1993.And while few teams have been able to stop the Blackhawks so far, Montreal (13-1-1) would easily be their toughest foe.The Canadiens set a franchise record for best home start (10-0-0) with a 5-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night. Carey Price posted his second shutout and league-best 10th win, and reduced his league-best GAA to 1.40.However, Montreal is 3-1-1 on the road, and will be playing away from the Bell Centre for the first time since backup goaltender Al Montoya was hung out to dry in a 10-0 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets on Nov. 4.The Montreal Gazette reported late Saturday that Montoya, a Chicago native, will start Sunday. Hes 1-1-1 with 2.92 GAA and .909 save percentage in his hometown. You hate to see what happened to him in Columbus, center Andrew Shaw told the Gazette. You cant blame him, you blame us. We were not there for him, we didnt compete for him. We didnt battle. We didnt fight. We didnt try to box out. We didnt block shots like we need to. We owe it to him.Shaw is making his return to Chicago coming off his best game of the season. A two-time Stanley Cup winner and fan favorite for his rugged play, Shaw spent five seasons with the Blackhawks before being dealt to Montreal for two second-round picks on June 24, and signed a six-year extension worth $23.4 million four days later. On Saturday, he scored his first goal since opening night and added two assists, doubling his points total to six.I havent been playing that well, but I feel Im taking steps in the right direction, Shaw told the Gazette. Im trying for that snowball effect and build off it, every shift, every game.Quenneville told the Daily Herald of Arlington Heights that Shaw was tough to replace and that he will be excited to face his former club.Itll be a good challenge for us. Lets be aware of Shawzy on Sunday, Quenneville said. OAKLAND, Calif. -- Athletics outfielder Josh Reddick is accustomed to hitting his teammates with whipped-cream pies in the face quickly after game-ending plays. Reddick was happy to finally be on the receiving end of one in his second game back from the disabled list -- even if it took a bit longer than usual to get there. Reddick drew a bases-loaded walk in the 10th inning to force in the winning run and lift Oakland to a 4-3 win over the Chicago White Sox on Saturday, then waited near the As dugout until Coco Crisp sneaked up from behind and delivered the long-anticipated pie in Reddicks face. "They dont know how to do it right," said Reddick, who had two hits. "Im usually pretty quick about it. I talked to Coco and he said he didnt know how to do it. He went to three different exits." Reddicks first career game-ending walk off Hector Santiago capped what might have otherwise been a frustrating day for Oakland. The As had 16 hits, stranded 18 runners overall and failed to score after loading the bases with no outs in the ninth before scoring the game-winner off Santiago (1-4). Chris Young, who had two hits, started the rally with a one-out double. After Yoenis Cespedes was intentionally walked, Josh Donaldson drew a free pass from Santiago to load the bases. Brandon Moss then lined out to second before Reddick walked on five pitches. "You keep putting guys on base and somebodys going to score at some point," Oakland manager Bob Melvin said. "It took a little longer than usual today, and it was painful at times. But at the end of the day, its a win." Jed Lowrie matched his career high of four hits for the As, who have won seven straight at home and 13 of 15 overall. Jerry Blevins (4-0) retired one batter to get the win after Melvin emptied his bullpen following a stellar effort by starter Dan Straily. Straily struck out eight in six innings and left with a 3-1 lead before Chicago scored two runs in the seventh to tie it. Alejandro De Aza had two hits and two RBIs for the White Sox, who have lost five straight. "There was progress, if theres a silver lining to it, but then again were here to win games," Chicago manager Robin Ventura said. "It was a high-wire act for Hector ... but as far as fighting back, you like what you see out of the offence." Cespedes doubled in Lowrie in the first, then Young snapped an 0-for-19 streak with an RBI single in the second to put the As up 2-0. After De Aza doubled and scored on Adam Dunns single in the third, Oakland made it 3-1 when Donaldson hit a one-out single and scored on Nate Freimans triple in the fifth. It came after Chicago starter Jose Quintana was called for a balk when he stumbled off the mound and dropped the ball during his windup. Oakland had runners on in each of the next four innings but failed to score. "I dont see it as bittersweet," Reddick said of Oaklands lack of production with runners in scoring position. "Tomorrow we may hit five hits and score seven runs." Quintana left after giving up a one-out double to Lowrie in the sixth. The left-hander walked three and struck out four. The White Sox, shut out a day earlier by 40-year-old Bartolo Colon, couldnt get much going against Straily but broke through against the As bullpen in the seventh. Jeff Keppinger singled off reliever Sean Doolittle and took third on Hector Gimenezs double. De Aza followed with a sharp two-run single to drive in both runs and tie the game at 3-all. Donaldson reached on an infield single leading off the ninth against Nate Jones. Santiago relieved Jones and walked Moss, then gave up a bunt single to Reddick. Santiago got Derek Norris to ground into a 6-2-3 double play, then later fanned Eric Sogard to end the jam. It was a rough day all around for the slumping White Sox. Designated hitter Paul Konerko struck out twice before leaving the game with a stiff neck. Shortstop Alexei Ramirez also appeared to injure his lower back after bumping into left fielder Dayan Viciedo chasing down a popup by Cespedes also in the sixth but stayed in the game. NOTES: Oakland is 9-1 in games decided in the final at-bat. ... Quintana, who tied for second in the AL with 15 no-decisions in 2012, already has six this season. ... Chicago LHP Chris Sale (5-2) takes a 23-inning scoreless streak into Sundays series finale. ... Oakland RHP Jarrod Parker (3-6) will make just his second career start against the White Sox. It was a mixed day for Australians in the NFL, with offensive lineman David Yankey cut by the Carolina Panthers and defensive end Adam Gotsis making the Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos. The Panthers announced on Saturday they had released Yankey, a 198cm tall, 141kg Sydney-born guard. It came just days after the San Francisco 49ers cut another Australian offensive lineman, Blake Muir.NFL teams had to reduce their squads from 75 to 53 on Saturday, ahead of Thursdays opening of the regular season.Yankeys release spoils an Aussie against Aussie match-up in Thursdays Super Bowl repeat to start the season between Gotsis champion Broncos against the runner-up Panthers.Australia will still be well represented in the NFL this season with Gotsis and punters Brad Wing (New York Giants), Jordan Berry (Pittsburgh Steelers) and Lachlan Edwards (New York Jets).Gotsis, a 195cm tall, 127kg rookie defensive end, is a rising star in the NFL, surviving Saturdays cuts to cement a place in the Broncos, who were ranked the No.1 defensive team in the NFL last year.Another Panther player cut on Saturday and well known to Australian sports fans was Eric Wallace, an American who made the jump from US college basketball to the AFL in 2012, where he was signed by North Melbourne.Wallace was attempting to make the Pantheers as a tight end.ddddddddddddYankey was a two-time All-American selection during his four-year stint with Stanford University, but struggled after being drafted by the Minnesota Vikings in 2014 and waived by the team ahead of the 2015 season. The Panthers signed Yankey to a futures contract in January, but he faced a tough task to make the team as cutting the Australian did not cost the team money and eat into their salary cap compared to other contracted players.A year ago Australias main focus at the 53-man roster deadline was NRL convert Jarryd Hayne, who made the 49ers.Hayne, who quit the 49ers in the off season in a failed attempt to make the Fiji rugby sevens Olympic team before returning to the NRL with the Gold Coast Titans, may have made the NFL team again.Haynes biggest rival at the 49ers for punt and kick return, Bruce Ellington, was ruled out for the season earlier this week with a torn hamstring. In the off season Australia had 10 potential NFL players, but Hayne defected and Yankey, Muir, punter Tom Hackett (New York Jets), kicker Brad Craddock (Cleveland Browns) and former AFL player and cornerback hopeful Joel Wilkinson (Arizona Cardinals) were cut. The difference between 7-on-7

The Kiwis will need a strong start in the Four Nations rugby league final to keep Australias big forward pack on the back foot, coach David Kidwell believes. The New Zealanders have yet to beat the Kangaroos in 2016, with last weeks 14-8 Four Nations pool match loss their third defeat of the year. The defending Four Nations champions suffered a 16-0 Anzac Test loss in May, and were thumped 26-6 in Perth last month. The Kiwis were in danger of missing out on the Four Nations final after being held to an 18-18 draw against Scotland at the weekend, but Australias 36-18 win over England means they will defend their title at Anfield early on Monday (AEDT).Kidwell says its important that the Kiwis get things right from the start, after their execution proved lacking in previous games.I thought Australias big men and outside backs really got them on the front foot - its something weve got to look at and make sure our executions right, he said.Weve got to have the right attitude for Sunday, but Ive got full confidence in this team and the way weve prepared.Skipper Jesse Bromwich says his team know only too well the importance of a good start, something that eluded them in their 34-2 World Cup final loss to Australia three years ago at Old Trafford. If theres anything weve learned, its probably about our start. They came out really hard there, blew us off the park really early and we just couldnt find our feet after that, he said. Its a big ask against Australia, theyve got a very big forward pack. But its something weve been working on, and hopefully we can show that on Sunday.Kidwell still has a tricky decision to make on a replacement for five-eighth Thomas Leuluai, who suffered a double jaw fracture against Scotland.Te Maire Martin is one option, but lacks international experience, while versatile Melbourne Storm backrower Tohu Harris is another possibility after starting at No.6 against Australia two years ago. History made, Washington Redskins style. Griffins first 11-on-11 play of the 2013 training camp. Like the moon landing, the sort of thing where you always remember where you were when it happened. "Not quite that dramatic," third-string quarterback Rex Grossman said. "But I hear your point." Actually, the payoff didnt match the hype. Griffin ran 16 plays with the first-string offence against a scout team that was mimicking the Pittsburgh Steelers defence in preparation for the Redskins next preseason game. Wearing his familiar black brace on his right knee, Griffin completed 7 of 10 passes with an interception. He moved well in the pocket, although he didnt face much of a pass rush. "Its like he never left," right tackle Tyler Polumbus said. "We hardly even noticed that he just got back in there. He was the same guy he was last year, and the same guy hes been in walkthroughs and 7-on-7 and all that." Griffin had been limited to 7-on-7 drills during camp as he works his way back from reconstructive knee surgery, part of coach Mike Shanahans cautious approach that has tested Griffins patience. The difference between 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 is the presence of pass-rushing linemen who can test the quarterbacks ability to change directions in a hurry. Yet Grossman said it would be a stretch to categorize Griffins snaps Wednesday as true 11-on-11 work. Second-stringer Kirk Cousins, for instance, took back the reins when the starters faced the starters in the two-minute drill, with Griffin again a spectator. "He looks great," Grossman saaid.dddddddddddd "Right at seven months is where I felt like I was healthy when I tore my ACL. Hes pretty much ready to go. I would say hes 90 per cent capable of doing everything." Even so, Grossman understands Shanahans approach. "If somebody were to fall in a competitive drill on his knee, everybody would have second-guessed it," Grossman said. "I think everybodys playing it smart, and Week 1, nobody remembers anything that happened before that. They remember the playoff game and Week 1, and whatever happens in between, nobody cares." Except that they do. Wednesdays announced of 10,111 was one of the biggest of camp, and it drew a disproportional amount of national media. Adding to the drama has been the back-and-forth between Shanahan and Griffin, who has said he doesnt like the coachs practice plan but is following along if it means playing in the regular season opener on Sept. 9. Pierre Garcon, who caught Griffins first 11-on-11 pass, was asked for his take on the way the quarterback has publicly challenged the coach. "We dont necessarily like it, but thats the kind of player he is," Garcon said. "He wants to be out there, he wants to help the team. But hes still got some time. We dont need him for just Week 1, we need him for the whole season." Griffin did not address reporters Wednesday. Shanahan called Griffins work the "next step" toward Week 1. "Hell get more accustomed every practice he has, every rep he gets, and obviously our goal is to get him ready for the first game," Shanahan said. "Hopefully there is no setback." Note: More than 100 members of the military attended the practice. Griffin, the son of Army parents, made a beeline for the group after the workout and signed autographs. ... The Redskins cut veteran WR Devery Henderson. ' ' '

defenders got to the backfield, Darnold used hi

Jay Ajayi began the season as an afterthought and was a healthy inactive for the Miami Dolphins opening game.He is now attempting to become the first NFL running back to rush for 200 yards in three consecutive games.Ajayis stunning emergence is energizing the Dolphins (3-4) as they come off a bye and attempt to record their third consecutive victory when they host the New York Jets on Sunday (1 p.m. ET, CBS).The second-year player from Boise State rushed for 204 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Oct. 16 and followed up with a 214-yard effort against the Buffalo Bills seven days later. That made Ajayi just the fourth player to rush for 200 or more yards in back-to-back games, joining O.J. Simpson (1973 and 1976), Earl Campbell (1980) and former Miami star Ricky Williams (2002).A third straight 200-yard outing would be quite the feat -- considering the Jets (3-5) lead the NFL in rushing defense at 74.0 yards per game.I know in the NFL its hard to get 100 yards, Ajayi said. So for us to have done back-to-back 200-yard games is a credit to the hard work we have put in, the O-line, receivers, everyone including myself. And so if it does happen again, thats going to be an amazing thing, an incredible thing, and well just see what happens.Something surely has to give on Sunday. Ajayi sports a spectacular 6.4-yard average per carry heading into a game against a unit allowing just a 3.3 yard average. Were playing a good team, Ajayi said. The Jets got a really good front up there, the defensive line and their linebackers. We know were going to have a really good challenge in front of us, but at the same time, were not worried about anybody else. Were worried about ourselves. The Jets are certainly only worried about themselves too heading into the contest against their AFC East rivals. New York is seeking its third straight victory as it tries to dig out of a 1-5 start. The squad had higher aspirations, and being two games below .500 at the midway point of the season is thoroughly disappointing to veteran linebacker David Harris.Obviously nobody thought wed be at this 3-5 mark, Harris said. But guys keep fighting, were still playing hard, and were still going to grind this thing out to the end.Turnovers plagued the Jets during their first six games, and they still rank last in turnover margin at minus-9.Quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick has been intercepted 11 times but avoided the key miscue last Sunday in a 31-28 win over the Cleveland Browns.Veteran running back Matt Forte helped fuel the victory by rushing for 82 yards and two scores. Forte has 542 yards and six touchdowns in his first season with the Jets after leaving the Chicago Bears as a free agent. His offensive coordinator with the Bears last season was Adam Gase, the first-year head coach of the Dolphins.I dont even know if elite pro is the right word, Gase said of Forte. Its something that Ive very rarely experienced with a player. Just watching what he did from the first time I was around him to the last day I was with him, that guy is a stud, man. I cant express how much I appreciated the way that that guy prepared, the way he practiced. We tried to hold him back, and he didnt care what we thought. He was like, Im getting my reps. You can yell at me all you want for being in there. He didnt care. I mean, that guy, he was a workhorse. Hes a guy that if youre around him just one year, you benefited from it.While the Jets have excelled at stuffing ball carriers, they arent so proficient against the pass. Cornerback Darrelle Revis, 31, is slipping and was beaten repeatedly by Cleveland receivers last Sunday.Jets coach Todd Bowles insisted Revis is healthy when pressed regarding the veterans drop-off in play.Other than maintenance, I dont think (he is hurt) any more than anybody else, Bowles said. We dont play injured players, and we dont encourage them to play. We try not to. All we can go by is how they tell us they feel, and Revis has been fine for the most part. He had a sore ankle here and there, but I think hes been OK.New York is last in the NFL in pass defense, allowing 289 yards per game, and that could present opportunities for Dolphins quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who has thrown for 1,728 yards and seven touchdowns against seven interceptions. SEATTLE -- While the celebration was underway on the far corner of the field, Washington was already starting the process of regrouping.Theres no more wiggle room for any slipups by the Huskies after seeing Sam Darnold and Southern California expose them in a way no one else has this season.I just think its hard when you lose and you put so much into it, but well regroup, Washington coach Chris Petersen said. Well be back. These kids are going to be resilient and well reload and see what weve got.The Huskies (9-1, 6-1 Pac-12) dropped three spots to No. 7 in the latest AP Top 25 after their 26-13 loss to USC on Saturday night. The bigger question is where Washington will land when the College Football Playoff rankings are released Tuesday and whether there remains a viable path for the Huskies to find their way into the top four without major upsets. But the playoff positioning was secondary for the Huskies in the aftermath of the loss to the Trojans. Washingtons defense -- which had been regarded as maybe the best in the Pac-12 -- was exposed by USC because Darnold was rarely pressured, and it suffered another big loss with linebacker Azeem Victor expected out for the season after a leg injury.Darnold threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns, showing poise and playmaking in a hostile atmosphere. It wasnt for Washingtons lack of effort. The Huskies thrived for most of the season by being able to get pressure in the pass game without having to bring extra defenders. Blitzing had been done in specific spots but not as the primary method to cause disruption. That plan changed against USC -- but didnt bring the desired results. Washington blitzed regularly, whether it was bringing linebackers up the middle or occasionally defensive backs off the edge. USCs defensive line was excellent at stemming the pressure and when defenders got to the backfield, Darnold used his athleticism to slip tacklerrs and extend plays with his feet.ddddddddddddThe final result was Washington getting only one sack.I think you got to bring what you got to bring, Petersen said. They did a good job of mixing up their calls, I thought, and the bootleg hurt us. ... So youre trying to mix it up there a little bit. I think overall, the defense was solid enough. I dont think it was an outstanding game by any phase of our team. Part of thats a credit to those guys, to USC, it is. They played good. They played hard and whooped us pretty good.Washingtons pass rush was already lagging since the loss of sack-leader Joe Mathis, who injured his foot during the Huskies bye week. Petersen announced last week that Mathis would undergo surgery and is likely done for the season. In the four games since Mathis went out, Washington has just four total sacks. Before Mathis was lost, Washington was averaging four sacks per game. What Washington lost with Mathis was pressure from the edge. What it loses with the expected loss of Victor may be more. While he was occasionally out of position by being too aggressive, Victor was Washingtons best tackler. He also called the defense for the Huskies, a role fellow linebacker Keishawn Bierria had to inherit midgame on Saturday. D.J. Beavers took over for Victor and finished with six tackles but also had his inexperience exposed at times, especially on USCs final touchdown, when tight end Daniel Imatorbhebhe slipped behind Beavers and caught an 8-yard TD at the back of the end zone.We hate losing a guy like that, but like any situation playing football, guys get hurt, Washington cornerback Kevin King said. D.J. got in there. He filled in and did his job. Next man up.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25 ' ' '

INDIANAPOLIS -- The Portland Trail Blazers will make their one and only visit of the season to Indianapolis on Saturday night to take on the Indiana Pacers. The Pacers (11-12) are returning home from a five-game Western Conference road trip. They finished the trip 2/3 and lost to the leagues worst team, the Dallas Mavericks on Friday night 111-103.We are consistently inconsistent right now, said guard Aaron Brooks. The Pacers have been within two games of .500 the entire season, and have never won or lost more than two straight games. When it looks like theyve turned the corner, they suffer another loss like the one on Friday night. We needed to bring more energy on the defensive end, and that didnt happen, coach Nate McMillan said. We leave off this road trip with just two wins and have a team waiting on us at home. Weve got to get back to it.For the season, the Pacers have been a lot better on their home court. Theyre 8-4 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, compared to 3-8 away from it. Playing a back-to-back after a long Western trip will be no easy task, however, even at home. The Blazers were one of the teams the Pacers just saw on this trip, and Portland scored 131 points in that win over Indiana.Portland (12-12) is coming off a tough loss to Memphis on Thursday night. Late free throws by Toney Douglas put the Blazers away.It was a tough loss, Blazers coach Terry Stotts said. Our offense all game struggled. We struggled to make shots, and we didnt finish around the rim. Both teams are in similar positions in the standings, but in different conferences. There could be a lot of points scored in this game, as the Blazers are second worst in the NBA in defensive rating (109.1 points per 100 possessions given up). The Pacers are 11th worst in the same statistic and, as previously mentioned, will be playing on a back-to-back after a long trip out west.Coming into Friday night, these two teams were 8th and 9th in the league in pace of play.Damian Lillard is a tough matchup for the Pacers. He scored 28 points to go along with 10 assists in their win over Indiana earlier this season. He averaged 29.5 points in the two games against the Pacers last season.Conversely, Pacers star Paul George only averaged 11 points in the two games against the Blazers last season, his lowest average against any team. He was injured and did not play against Portland when these teams matched up recently.Like the Pacers, Portland has played a lot better at home. They are just 5-8 on the road to start the season. After missing Thursdays game against the Grizzlies, starting small forward Maurice Harkless has been upgraded to probable for Saturdays game (NBA.com). Hes averaging 13.0 points per game this season and is an important part of the Blazers success. Despite that bit of good news for Portland, forward Al-Farouq Aminu has been downgraded to doubtful for the game with a back contusion. Cheap Shoes UK 2020 . Champions Surrey Storm are just one point away from the Superleague semi-finals after a 52-42 win over Loughborough Lightning. In a clash between top-four rivals, Surrey held a narrow 35-34 lead after the third quarter, but pulled away to claim a comfortable win that left them in striking distance of Manchester Thunder and Hertfordshire Mavericks, who are still tied at the top after their fixture was abandoned.Surrey head coach Kathyrn Ratnapala made changes at half-time and the introduction of Amy Flanagan and Josie Huckle appeared to lift the Storm as they took command in the closing 15 minutes. Hannah Reid produced a resolute defensive display for Surrey, pulling off an agile interception in the last quarter, and Loughborough slipped to a defeat which dealt a major blow to their semi-final hopes.Elsewhere in the Superleague, Team Northumbria moved up to sixth in the table after a 50-45 win over Yorkshire Jets. This result left the rock-bottom Jets still without a win ahead of Mondays trip to Hertfordshire Mavericks, live on Sky Sports.Watch the Mavericks against the Jets this Monday night, from 7.30pm on Sky Sports 2. Nico Rosberg has revealed some of the secrets behind his championship success this year and the level of dedication required to beat Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton.Less than a week after crossing the line at the final race of the 2016 season, Rosberg shocked the sporting world by announcing his retirement from Formula One. The 31 year old said he was not willing to do that sort of commitment for another year, adding that his wife Vivian was going to get her husband back while he was looking forward to being a dad again to his daughter Ala?a.Prior to his title success this year, Rosberg endured two seasons of finishing second to Hamilton as Mercedes dominance pitched the two teammates into a private battle for the title. The heaviest blow came at the 2015 U.S. Grand Prix when Rosberg spun off from the lead of the race, handing the victory and that years drivers championship to Hamilton.Spurred on by the defeat, he upped his level of commitment and dedication away from the track and at media appearances kept his words to a minimum. His mantra of taking one race at a time became the stock response to questions about dealing with the pressures of fighting for the title, but behind the scenes there was a lot more going on.This year was the best I can be, he said shortly after announcing his retirement. In preparation and everything, I put everything into it. To give you some examples to understand, since Austin last year I started to work very closely with a mental trainer and went into meditation and things like that also. I made massive progress as a result and it was just finding those extra little percentages to perform even better.Mental training is difficult because its something you need to persevere with, every morning and every evening, its just on and on otherwise there is no point. Without that person who was supporting me - he has his part in this as well - that provided phenomenal progress for me to discover that and improve in that area. With in-season testing limited to just two two-day tests per year in F1 (half of which has to be completed by young drivers), Rosberg also looked to sharpen his skills in go-karts.I bought a go-kart in the winter and have just been driving and driving and driving, because we dont drive much out there, he said. I was sure that I could practice my skill and improve that little bit more if Im out there driving something all the time.Again, that was days away from home, but Im as good now as when I was driving for the championship when I was 14! Thats how much I drove. I think that made a difference as well, and thats just some examples of how I gave it everything and didnt leave a stone unturned. Im very, very happy that that worked out.The level of commitment required away from the track is one of the key reasons cited by Rosberg in his decision to retire as he now looks to put family first.I pushed like crazy in all directions. I want to thank everyone who was involved, my family ... a lot of sacrifices. My wife, for example, at home; every time I was home, she understood that I needed to rest so I never did any nights, I didnt have to take after my daughter. Didnt do any nights, didnt do any difficult things, she was always there to support and make everything possible.Thats one example of the commitment we all put into it. Ive achieved this childhood dream, and Im not willing to do that sort of commitment for another year, and Im not interested in coming fourth or whatever. Im a fighter, and I want to win. So Im not interested to do that again, so Ive decided to follow my heart, and my heart has told me to stop there and call it a day, do other things. OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Houston Astros have a winning vibe during the September stretch run.Tony Kemp noticed it before Tuesday nights 2-1, 10-inning win against the Oakland Athletics. Before the game today, everyone seemed loose, Kemp said. No ones really panicking. Everyones just having fun this last stretch.George Springer hit a go-ahead single in the top of the 10th inning. Kemp, who tied it with a pinch-hit double in the seventh, got things going with a leadoff double against Sean Doolittle (2-3) and Jake Marisnick sacrificed him to third to bring up Springer.Chris Devenski (4-4) struck out four in 3 2/3 innings of relief for the win, and Ken Giles escaped a bases-loaded jam and closed it out for his 13th save. The Astros remain in the mix for the AL wild card. The dramatic finish at the end, its hard to overlook, manager A.J. Hinch said. There are so many story lines that go on why we won a close game. ... Our guys understand where were at in the calendar. Weve played important games late.Jose Altuves eighth-inning single gave him 200 hits in three straight seasons, the first to do so since Ichiro Suzuki from 2001-10.Oaklands Danny Valencia was ejected at the end of the ninth by plate umpire Marty Foster after striking out.It was announced that the As played the game under protest after a call was overturned on replay review in the third. Marisnick was initially called safe on his bunt and that was overturned, but Teoscar Hernandez -- aboard on a single -- got to return to first base rather than be called out on a double play because he reacted to the original, incorrect call. Oakland briefly protested before withdrawing it, both managers said afterward. It ended up just being a really weird play, Hinch said.Sean Manaea struck out seven with two walks over six scoreless innings. The lefty allowed three hits in his second start since missing 15 days with a strained muscle in his upper back. That was one of his best outings of the season and to squander it is incredibly frustrating, Doolittle said.Oakland has lost six straight to the Astros, its longest skid ever in the series.Jake Smolinskis sharp single through a shifted infield with one ouut in the sixth was the As first hit against Astros starter Joe Musgrove, who then loaded the bases and was done for the night.ddddddddddddThe rookie right-hander, who beat the As earlier this season when he pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings, gave up two hits and one run, struck out four and walked three.Devenski relieved Musgrove and allowed Stephen Vogts RBI groundout. Its incredible, Musgrove said. This teams got so much fight in it.VOGT RECOGNIZEDVogt, the Oakland catcher, was named the 2016 Dave Stewart Community Service Award winner and will be honored before Wednesday afternoons series finale. Vogt earned the award for a second straight year, the first two-time winner. He and wife, Alyssa, support the School of Imagination in Dublin that offers services and support systems to more than 350 children, many with special needs and disabilities such as autism. We have a duty to the Bay Area, he said.TRAINERS ROOMAstros: Manager Hinch will pick his moments to use OF Colby Rasmus, who has struggled since he came off the disabled list Aug. 30 after surgery to have a cyst removed from his ear. Rasmus is in an 0-for-17 stretch. No doubt hes had a rough season on a lot of levels, said Hinch, who still expects Rasmus will contribute down the stretch.Athletics: RF Khris Davis was a late scratch because of a stomach bug that had him throwing up during the day. Valencia replaced him in the lineup. ... RHP Sonny Gray threw a 48-pitch bullpen session and the next step for him in his recovery from a strained right forearm will be to throw to hitters this weekend, the day still to be determined. ... RHP Henderson Alvarez, who hasnt pitched in the majors since May 2015, underwent a second surgery on his right shoulder Tuesday. It was performed by Dr. James Andrews.UP NEXTAstros: RHP Collin McHugh (11-10, 4.66 ERA) is 2-0 with a 3.31 ERA so far in September. He is 10-0 in 12 September starts with the Astros dating to 2014.Athletics: Rookie RHP Daniel Mengden (2-7, 5.68) looks to win consecutive starts for the first time all season. ' ' '

TROON, Scotland -- The pubs and bars in this quiet Scottish town had better ensure their cellars are fully stocked this weekend because Andrew Johnston is going for Open glory. The Englishman carded a second successive round of 69 to sit at 4 under and just six off leader Phil Mickelsons pace?headed into the weekend at Royal Troon. And one can only imagine the sort of party he would throw if he triumphed in his home major championship. This is, after all, the man who told ESPN he would be drunk for a week if he won the U.S. Open last month.Johnston, known as Beef to friends and fans alike, has developed something of a cult following with his bright persona, and the 27-year-old was unashamed in his ambition going into this weekend -- hes in Troon to win the big one.Why not? Johnston said when asked if he could catch Mickelson. Youve got to believe. If youre in the tournament, why cant you win it? But its miles off. Weve still got two rounds to go.Fridays wet and wild conditions stood in stark contrast to the balmy sunshine of Thursday, and Johnston caught the worst of the pouring rain as he teed off his second round shortly after 8 a.m. local time. But the world No. 104 insisted it was a case of mind over matter as the rain lashed down on the South Ayrshire coast.Youve just make sure youre concentrating, Johnston said. I dont like wearing too many layers -- I said to my caddie, I dont mind if I get a bit wet. As long as the clubs are dry and my hands are dry, Im happy.Johnstons broad grin and bushy beard mark him out as a character to follow on the course. He once celebrated a hole-in-one at the BMW PGA Championship by chest-bumping with a friend in the gallery, and spectators at Royal Troon have warmed to him as they await the first British winner here since Arthur Havers in 1923.But for all the laughs and antics, there should be no doubt over how seriously Johnston is taking his Open tilt, and he refused to let thoughts of lifting the Claret Jug cloud his concentration ahead of the traditional third-round moving day.Youre obviously thinking about whats going to happen Saturday and Sunday, but realistically you just got to stop talking about that, Johnston said. Now weve got 36 holes to play, so theres no point even thinking about it.Ive just got to go out and play tomorrow and see what happens after that and evaluate after the third round and go on from there.I dreamt of this as a kid, playing in these events and people shouting your name. I absolutely love it. Shoes Canada From China . Vettel was 0.168 seconds faster than Red Bull teammate Mark Webber around the Suzuka circuit. LONDON -- As fog engulfed English stadiums, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Diego Costa illuminated the Premier League on Saturday. And the 35-year-old Ibrahimovic is fast catching the striker seven years his junior on the scoring leaderboard with only two goals separating them.Ibrahimovic provided both goals at the Hawthorns as Manchester United rolled over West Bromwich Albion 2-0 for a third consecutive league victory -- a header after five minutes and a deflected second-half strike. He is great to play alongside because he makes such great runs, United winger Jesse Lingard said. That makes him easy to link up with.At Crystal Palace in south London, Chelsea clocked up an 11th consecutive win for the first time in a Premier League season. Costa secured a 1-0 victory for Antonio Contes side by heading in his 15th goal of the league campaign in the first half. And Costa is far ahead of Ibrahimovic on a more significant table. Costas Chelsea tops the Premier League, still 13 points ahead of Ibrahimovics sixth-place United.Thats an unsettling gulf for United manager Jose Mourinho, who celebrated a third consecutive victory on the first anniversary of being fired by Chelsea for a second time.Returning United to the top four Champions League places, let alone challenging for the title, is a tough mission for Mourinho.Three of the teams ahead of United are in action on Sunday. Bob Bradleys Swansea has conceded 11 goals in its last three away games in the league and scored only once. When I came here I knew what I was getting into and Im not backing down from it now, Bradley said. Thats the challenge -- when the team has put itself in a tough spot everybody has got to stick together during the toughest times and fight the fight.WEST HAM 1, HULL 0West Ham has five league wins this season and all were achieved with 1-0 scorelines.Mark Noble, who clinched Wednesdays win over Burnley after missing a penalty, netted from the spot at the Olympic Stadium as Hull slipped to the bottom of the standings.SUNDERLAND 1, WATFORD 0Sunderland moved off the bottom thanks to Patrick van Aanholt tucking the ball in off the far post four minutes into the second half.A fourth league win in seven games took Sunderland a point from safety. Wake Forest is ready for two years worth of growing pains to start paying off.The Demon Deacons begin Dave Clawsons third season Thursday night when they play host to a Tulane team debuting under new coach Willie Fritz.Wake Forest has finished 3-9 twice as part of Clawsons patient rebuild of the program, and last years Demon Deacons were one of the nations youngest teams. Now theyre a year older, with nine offensive starters returning, and theyre ready for the progress they made to show up in their record. This is the most talented group up front that weve had. This is the most cohesive group up front that weve had since I have been here, offensive lineman Tyler Hayworth said. We are a unit that has to work together and trust each other to be able to succeed. From last year to this year, we have built up that trust and built up these relationships with each other to where we are ready to play and we are prepared mentally and physically.John Wolford will start at quarterback for the Demon Deacons, but Kendall Hinton also will play. Wolford has started 22 of the 23 games hes played at the school, throwing for 1,791 yards last season while completing 61 percent of his passes with 11 interceptions and nine touchdowns. Hinton made two starts as a freshman in 2015 and rushed for seven touchdowns with four TD throws and five interceptions.Fritz is taking over a Tulane team that -- like Wake Forest -- is coming off consecutive 3-9 seasons, the latter of which cost fourth-year coach Curtis Johnson his job. His Georgia Southern teams led the Bowl Subdivision in rushing in both of his seasons there, and he led the Eagles to a Sun Belt title in his first season and a bowl game to end Year 2.The main thing I really want to see is incredible effort, Fritz said. We talk around here about, `The Wave dont beat the Wave. Lets stay away from those pre-snap penalties ... and just play a clean game.---Some things to know about the Tulane-Wake Forest opener:- RUNNING WAVE: The Green Wave figure to cycle in four running backs as part of a run-heavy system, with Dontrell Hilliard, Sherman Badie, Josh Rounds and Lazedrick Thompson getting most of the work. Theyll look to replicate what Fritzs Georgia Southern team did last year, averaging 363 yards per game and nearly 6.5 yards per carry. Tulane ranked 119th last year in the FBS in rushing, averaging just 115.8 yards.- DEMON DEACONS D: Wake Forest returns seven starters from their defense, but must replace three members of their front seven, including mainstay LBs Brandon Chubb and Hunter Williams. DL Duke Ejiofor will be important up front, after he recorded a sack in four of the seven games he played last year and had a team-best 4.5 sacks.- RUNNING WAKE: The Demon Deacons have struggled to get their ground game going under Clawson, mainly because of a young offensive line and injuries that mounted at key positions. Wake Forest was 123rd nationally in rushing last year and 127th in 2014. Theyve got more options this year, with freshman Cade Carney earning the start over redshirt freshman Rocky Reid and sophomore Matt Colburn.
