GLEN COVE, N.Y. -- Kristen Gillman and Brooke Mackenzie Henderson won semifinal matches Saturday to advance to the 36-hole final in the U.S. Womens Amateur at Nassau Country Club. The 16-year-old Gillman, Austin, Texas, beat 15-year-old Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, California, 4 and 3. Henderson, the 16-year-old Canadian who is No. 2 in the world amateur ranking, edged 16-year-old Hannah OSullivan of Paradise Valley, Arizona, 1 up. "It feels awesome," Gillman said. "Coming into this week thats all you wanted. It feels great to accomplish that. Gillman is coming off an 11-stroke victory last week in the Junior PGA Championship. "It helped me a lot about all the momentum and just the confidence I had in my game," Gillman said. Henderson, from Smith Falls, Ontario, is trying to become the third Canadian winner in tournament history, following Marlene Stewart in 1956 and Cathy Sherk in 1978. "Its amazing. Im really excited to play tomorrow," Henderson said. "As I said earlier, I still have a lot of work to do. Its exciting to be in the final. Best finish previous to this week was round of 32, so its great to have a chance to win and contend for the title. "Definitely going to play my game, be smart about decisions. Match play is really different from stroke play. Youve got to be really careful and smart." Henderson lost the first two holes and pulled even par wins on Nos. 9 and 10. She took the lead with a 50- foot birdie chip on the par-4 14th and matched OSullivan with pars on the final four holes. "She was playing really well," Henderson said. "Shes a great player and she has a great future ahead of her. It was a lot of fun out there. I made a couple mistakes early that got me 2 down, but I was able to fight back, and thats really key to learn how to do that." Harrison Barnes Jersey . The Union looked to have grabbed a big win in the 88th minute when Amobi Okugo finally put the hosts in front. But a terrible giveaway by Union goalkeeper Rais Mbolhi handed Earnshaw the equalizer in the second minute of stoppage time, keeping the Union two points back of fifth-place Red Bull New York for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. In addition to the game being aired in its entirety on CTV Two Vancouver Island and TSN.ca, TSN2 will also have coverage of Whitecaps FC immediately following NASCAR Sprint Cup Series: Toyota Owners 400.MINSK, Belarus -- Ben Scrivens will start in goal for Team Canada against Finland today in the quarterfinals of the world hockey championship. You can watch the game live on TSN and TSN GO at 12:45pm et/9:45am pt. Scrivens beat out James Reimer for the No. 1 goaltender job after they split games during the preliminary round. "Tight decision, both of them played well," coach Dave Tippett said Thursday. "Just hes the guy we decided on." Scrivens won all three of his starts at his first international tournament for Canada, putting up a 1.31 goals-against average and a .954 save percentage, second only to Kevin Lalande of Belarus, an Ottawa native. Reimer lost the opener to France in a shootout, won his next three starts and had a 2.20 GAA and .911 save percentage. Tippett hinted earlier in the week at Scrivens being the likely choice after Reimer started against Norway. Canadas coach mentioned the difficult schedule of four games in six days, and Scrivens not facing Norway gave him a chance to be fresh for Finland. Scrivens is now the man, barring injury or a rough outing against Finland that doesnt end Canadas tournament. Tippett said Tuesday that his quarter-final starter would likely continue in that role as long as he won. Canadas challenge, from Scrivens on out, is a Finnish team that has only six players back from the Sochi Olympics but plays a similar style. "Theyre what youd classify as a typical Finland team where work ethic is one of their strongest points," Tippett said. "(They) play well as a team, (have) good structure, dont have a lot of NHL players on it but still players that are committed to play the way Finlands identity is. Its a structured, hard, one-on-one game." Finlands three NHL players are goaltender Pekka Rinne, captain Olli Jokinen and forward Erik Haula, who was a late addition after the Minnesota Wild were eliminated from the Stanley Cup playoffs. One player back from Sochi is Petri Kontiola, who has beeen Finlands leading scorer and arguably its best player.dddddddddddd. But Canadas biggest concern against Finland is Rinne, whos now healthy after being out from late October until early March with a hip infection. Nashville Predators teammate Ryan Ellis said he and his Canadian teammates are more worried about keeping the puck away from Rinne behind the net and in the corners than figuring out how to score on him. Rinnes strong play (1.65 GAA, .929 save percentage) has helped a turnover-prone Finnish defence. Still, thats something Canada might be able to exploit with an aggressive forecheck. "Your whole game has got to be built on it," Tippett said. "It doesnt matter who you play, were going to play two things that we think are the strengths of our game and certainly we think forechecking is one of the strengths of our game. "The ability to play in the offensive zone, come up with loose pucks, hold pucks and play in the offensive zone is one of the traits of good, Canadian-style hockey. Whether its Finland or whoever its against, we think thats one of the strengths of our game." Canada will have its full roster for the first time in almost a week as Alex Burrows returns from a two-game absence with a leg injury. Given Jonathan Huberdeaus success on a line with Brayden Schenn and Nathan MacKinnon, Burrows is expected to be the 13th forward. "Hes a good, veteran player," Tippett said of Burrows. "We talk about hes going to see a lot of different situations. Hes played on the penalty kill for us, hes played on the power play and hes played a regular shift, so hell jump in there, hell give us a spark." Defenceman Tyler Myers, who missed Wednesdays practice with the flu, took part in Thursdays optional skate and Tippett said hes feeling much better and will play. CHICAGO -- D.J. Augustin came into the league with high expectations. He came to Chicago simply looking for another chance. Augustin delivered on Saturday, scoring 18 points to help the short-handed Bulls beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-84 and snap a four-game losing streak. Carlos Boozer led the way with 19 points, and rookie Tony Snell came on strong in the second half to finish with 17 points. Chicago prevailed after matching its longest slide of the season and its longest in four years under coach Tom Thibodeau. "As we get bodies back, D.J. gets comfortable, I said all along that I have great belief in this team," Thibodeau said. Augustin looked like a guy whos settling in. He played more than 46 minutes, hitting 4 of 6 3-pointers while dishing out 10 assists. He did commit five turnovers. But overall it was a good night for a former first-round draft pick whose career hasnt quite gone the way he hoped. Augustin found himself in a limited role with Indiana last season after spending his first four years in Charlotte, and he was waived by Toronto this year before being signed by the Bulls last week. "The Indiana situation, I had some good games there," Augustin said. "At the same time, it was tough. The style of play maybe didnt fit me a little bit. Coach (Frank) Vogel had his guy that he went with, he played the majority of the minutes. I kind of knew that going in. The Toronto situation, I dont know what happened there. But I just tried to stay professional and just keep myself ready." Boozer and Augustin both got off to strong starts as the Bulls built a 17-point halftime lead, and Chicago withstood several pushes down the stretch to come away with the win after dropping 13 of 16. The Bulls shot nearly 54 per cent overall and were 10 of 15 on 3-pointers against a weak defence. Boozer hit 8 of 14 shots. Snell nailed five 3s -- four in the second half -- and finished one point off his career high. Taj Gibson scored 15 points. Joakim Noah grabbed 18 rebounds, and Chicago got a reprieve from the losing despite all its injuries. Besides Derrick Rose, the Bulls were also missing the injured Luol Deng (sore left Achilles), Jimmy Butler (sprained right ankle) and Kirk Hinrich (back). But they still had enough to beat Cleveland. "There were a lot of things I saw our team do that you just kind of sit back and go, Is this really us?" coach Mike Brown said. Andrew Bynum had 19 points for the Cavaliers, but Kyrie Irving had a rough night. He finished with 14 points on 5-of-16 shooting after fighting through an illness to score 39 in Fridays overtime win over Milwaukee, and the Cavaliers lost for the third time in four games. It didnt help that they were missing second-leading scorer Dion Waiters, who sat out his second straight game because of a sore right wrist. "Theres no excuses, we just didnt execute on both ends of the floor," Irving said. The Bulls saw a 19-point lead early in the third shrink to 68-61 late in the quarter. But a basket by Gibson and back-to-back 3-pointers by Snell bumped the lead to 81-65. The Cavaliers made another run in the fourth, cutting their deficit to 85-76 on Matthew Dellavedovas 3, but Chicago hung on. NOTES: Brown expressed sympathy for Kobe Bryant over the Lakers stars most recent injury. "You feel bad for him because of how hard he works, how bad he wants it," Brown said. "To see him go through the last two injuries, especially at this point of his career, makes it tough, makes it tough, so you feel bad for him." Brown was fired by the Lakers early last season and returned to Cleveland for a second tenure in April. ... No. 1 draft pick Anthony Bennett sat out his second straight game for Cleveland because of an illness. ... Deng, averaging 19.6 points, missed his second straight game for Chicago because of a sore left Achilles tendon. Butler left Thursdays game at Oklahoma City because of a sprained right ankle. The Bulls were hoping Hinrich would return from an ailing back against Cleveland. Instead, he missed his fifth straight game. Caris LeVert Jersey . The club says Fridays surgery was successful. Holiday, a former Eastern Conference All-Star acquired from Philadelphia last summer, has not played because of the shin injury since Jan. DeMarre Carroll Jersey . -- Blake Griffin scored 32 points and grabbed eight rebounds, DeAndre Jordan had 14 points and 22 rebounds and the Los Angeles Clippers outlasted the Golden State Warriors 98-96 on Thursday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round series. http://www.nbanetsauthority.com/trevor-b...ts-jersey-c-25/. Brandon Morrow allowed five runs on six hits over three innings. He struck out two, walked one and hit a batter. Edwin Encarnacion had a two-out, bases loaded two-RBI double in the third inning. And like the near entirety of last season, Jonathan Bernier and Torontos goaltending tandem is up to the task.CUIABA, Brazil -- Chile capitalized on a sluggish start by Australia to earn a 3-1 win in their World Cup opener on Friday, with Alexis Sanchez carrying over his prolific form for Barcelona with a goal and assist for the dangerous tournament outsiders. Sanchez -- a potential star of the World Cup -- poked home from close range in the 12th minute, before setting up Jorge Valdivia barely a minute later for the playmaker to finish from the edge of the area. A young Australia team, written off by most before a ball had been kicked, looked in danger of falling apart but the experienced Tim Cahill brought them back into the game with a trademark header in the 35th. Cahill, dominant in the air throughout, had several chances to equalize before and after halftime as Chile slipped off the pace in muggy conditions in Cuiaba. But a drilled, low shot by substitute Jean Beausejour settled the match in the second minute of injury time, sending the Chilean bench running onto the pitch and making fans set off fireworks. Chile moved level with Netherlands, which thrashed Spain 5-1 earlier Friday, and has a chance to eliminate the reigning champions when they meet in their next Group B game on Wednesday. "They have a superlative history in (major tournaments) so we definitely will have to play better than we did today," Chile coach Jorge Sampaoli said. "It will certainly be an electrifying game." Boasting its best ever squad for a World Cup, Chile has been strongly tipped by many -- including Pele -- to go far in Brazil despite being thrown in the same group as two of Europes top teams. And the Spanish, ripped apart by the Dutch in Salvador, will not be relishing playing Sampaolis side with their title defence on the line. Especially with Sanchez in this formm.dddddddddddd The 25-year-old forward is coming off his best season at Camp Nou -- having scored 21 goals, 19 in the league -- and he was too much for a flimsy Australia defence in the first half. Sanchez was on hand to guide in a close-range finish inside the near post after Australia captain Mile Jedinak failed to head clear Charles Aranguizs cross. The celebrations had hardly died down when Sanchez span his marker and laid the ball across for Valdivia to finish high into the net from 20 yards (meters). "Early on, we were probably just overawed by the whole thing," Australia coach Ange Postecoglou said. "In the end, we gave away a two-goal start and thats what killed us." It was already looking like a damage-limitation exercise for the beleaguered Socceroos, the lowest-ranked nation in Brazil. The raucous Chilean fans were regaling their teams crisp passing with chants "Ole" and a no-look backheel from Sanchez highlighted his confidence. But Chiles momentum was punctured when Cahill, renowned for his tremendous jumping ability, leapt above diminutive marker Gary Medel to thump home a header from a right-wing cross. He had a header ruled out for a marginal offside and squandered other chances before Beausejour ended Australias hopes of a comeback. "They got in twice," Cahill said. "(But) after that you could see their legs were going. We knew we could get something out of this game. We stood up strong. Its just unfortunate, not a lot went our way tonight, and it showed." Capping a satisfying night overall for Chile was the sight of star midfielder Arturo Vidal starting and playing 59 minutes on his return from knee surgery. "He was very good," Sampaoli. "His knee is good." Wholesale Jerseys China Wholesale Black NFL Jerseys Wholesale Black NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Womens Jerseys China NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys China Discount Jerseys ' ' '

Orchard Park, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Rex Ryan and the Buffalo Bills wasted little time in filling out their coaching staff. Ryan, who was named head coach on Monday, announced the hire of close friend Dennis Thurman as defensive coordinator Thursday, along with seven more coaches who come along to the Bills from his New York Jets staff. Thurman served in the same role under Ryan with the Jets from 2013-14 after coaching the defensive backs from 2009-12. The two have worked together since being members of the Baltimore Ravens defensive staff in 2002. Over the last two seasons, the Jets defense has held opposing rushers to the second fewest rushing yards per game, allowing only 90.7 yards per game. They led the NFL by only allowing 3.56 yards per rush over the past two seasons. In 2014, Buffalos defense finished fourth in the NFL in yards allowed and led the league with 54 sacks. Thurman replaces Jim Schwartz, whose contract was terminated, allowing him to pursue other jobs. Before joining the Jets, Thurman was part of the Ravens coaching staff for six years from 2002-07. He spent his first two seasons as a defensive assistant and his last four seasons coaching the secondary. Brooke Henderson has decided to tee it up against the worlds top female golfers. The Canadian teenage golf sensation announced Thursday shell join the LPGA Tour in 2015 instead of attending the University of Florida. The 17-year-old native of Smiths Falls, Ont., was the worlds top-ranked amateur womens player this year and made the cut in all four LPGA events she entered.Im ready to turn pro, Henderson said during a conference call. Its my dream to play against the best in the world and to be able to compete on the LPGA would be a dream come true.I know its along road ahead of me but Im excited for it . . . this is the right decision.Henderson has also signed with management and marketing firm IMG.Henderson won seven amateur tournaments and two pro events in a solid 2014 campaign. She captured the individual title at the world amateur championship in Japan, then combined with Brittany Marchand of Orangeville, Ont., and Augusta James of Bath, Ont., to earn Canada a second-place finish in the team event. But the articulate teen didnt look out of place against some of the worlds top female golfers. She finished tied for 10th — and was the top amateur — in the U.S. Womens Open and was tied for 26th at the Kraft Nabisco Championship, which is also a major. She also was the low amateur and low Canadian at the Canadian Pacific Womens Open in London, Ont., last August but said her play at the U.S. Open Womens Open figured in her decision to turn pro.Last season was very successful and a big confidence-booster for me in many ways, she said. Having that great finish (at U.S. Open) definitely was a point where I could see myself playing in the LPGA Tour, seeing this as a career and taking it to the next step.Henderson recorded over 50 career victories as a amateur and in 2012 became the youngest player ever to win a pro event. She was 14 years, nine months and three days when she captured a Canadian Womens Tour title. However, Henderson understands success at the pro level can be elusive and very difficult to achieve.Golf is a game of ups and downs and theres going to be times where its going to be a struggle, she said. But I love the game of golf and through those times I have to remember that passion I have.I know its just part of the game.Henderson hasnt yet finalized her 2015 schedule, saying she expects that to come into better focus sometime next month. School wont be an issue initially as Henderson is just finishing her last semester of Grade 12 and added being a pro golfer doesnt take away my opportunities for college down the road. RALEIGH, N.C. -- Chris Thorburn thinks one of the reasons the Winnipeg Jets have been successful under new coach Paul Maurice is that theyre playing together as a team. Demonstrating that newfound sense of camaraderie, Jets players wanted to win Tuesday nights game against Carolina in part because Maurice coached 920 games for the Hurricanes franchise. "We all understand his past and what he meant to this organization as far as the Hurricanes," Thorburn said. "We were playing for him as well as the two points." Winnipeg accomplished both goals when Thorburn scored the tiebreaker with 1:03 remaining to lift the Jets to a 2-1 win over the Hurricanes. It was Thorburns second goal of the season. Andrew Ladd also scored for the Jets, who are 9-2-0 since Maurice took over as coach on Jan. 12. Despite his players sentiments, Maurice said the game had no special significance for him. "This isnt my first tour through here, but we all care about each other in there, so Im taking it," he said. Winnipeg took the lead when Jacob Trouba circled around the net and sent the puck across the crease to Thorburn, who knocked it past goalie Anton Khudobin. "Great confidence in a young man to want to make the play that decides the game," Maurice said of Trouba, the young defenceman who asserted himself on the game-winner. "Not sit back and not want to make a mistake -- he wants the puck on his stick." Ondrej Pavelec made 28 saves for the Jets. Riley Nash scored for Carolina, and Khudobin made 25 saves. The Hurricanes went 10-4-0 in January and had won five of six, but their offence sputtered in this tight-checking game. "Two mistakes cost us two goals tonight," coach Kirk Muller said. "But overall, I thought our guys played hard and competed and skated and did a lot of good things -- just not the outcome we wanted." Winnipeg opened the scoring 12:57 into the second period when Michael Frolik skated past Carolina defenceman Justin Faulk on a rush down the left wing. Khudobin stopped Froliks shot, but Ladd batted the rebound into the net. Ladd, who has seven points in his last six games, was a member of the Hurricanes when they won the Stanley Cup in 2006. "Its always fun to score against your former team," Ladd said. "I get up for these games. You always have a little chip on your shoulder for a team thats traded you away." The Jets got a boost when they killed off a 51-second two-man advantage for the Hurricanes late in the second period. Carolinas John-Michael Liles hit the post with a slap shot during that stretch. Carolina tied it at 1 early in the third period. After the Hurricanes skated into the zone, Drayson Bowman tried to control the puck in the slot. Bowman couldnt get his stick on it, but the puck came to Nash, who snapped it past Pavelec. NOTES: Carolina began the night having played the fewest games in the NHL. ... The 49ers beat the Rams in such a meeting in 1989. In 10 of those games, the host won. What can be forecast for Sunday: hard feelings all around, even if 49ers linebacker Patrick Willis tones it down slightly. "Theres no question theres a lot of hostility between us," Willis said, "but at the end of the day theyre another football team. So, theres always going to be dislikes. Theyre an opponent of ours and we want to win. "If we werent in this race right now thered be no doubt that if they were playing against someone else, I would wish them well because its in our division. But its us playing, so theres not going to be any like at all there." ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org Wholesale Jerseys China Wholesale Black NFL Jerseys Wholesale Black NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Womens Jerseys China NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys China Discount Jerseys ' ' '

WACO, Texas -- Kansas coach Bill Self knows most people look at how Andrew Wiggins plays as a barometer for what to expect from the eighth-ranked Jayhawks. Dont make the mistake of overlooking the other players around the Big 12s top-scoring freshman. Naadir Tharpe scored 22 points, nine in a go-ahead run before halftime, and the Big 12-leading Jayhawks rebounded from their first league loss with a 69-52 victory at Baylor on Tuesday night. "Weve just got to be a team that its going to be a different guy most every night," Self said. "And (Tharpe) stepped up when we needed him to step up." Early on, there were three ties and nine lead changes. Tharpes short jumper with 3 1/2 minutes left in the half broke a 25-all tie and put the Jayhawks (17-5, 8-1 Big 12) ahead to stay. The tiebreaking shot was Tharpes third basket in a 14-3 spurt over the final 5 minutes of the first half, and he added a 3-pointer with a minute left. He then made another 3 on Kansas opening possession after halftime. Wiggins, a native of Vaughan, Ont., finished 4-of-13 shooting and didnt make his first basket until a half-court shot to beat the buzzer going into halftime for a 35-27 lead. "Well, we ran that play for him at the end of the first half to get him going," Self joked of Wiggins, who finished two points off his season average. "It was big. It gave a great momentum push going into halftime," said Perry Ellis, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds. "It was great that he knocked that down. It got him going." Cory Jefferson had 14 points to lead Baylor (14-8, 2-7), which lost its fourth consecutive game at the Ferrell Center after a 13-game home winning streak. Its the longest home drought since dropping six straight in 2005. The Bears, coming off a win at then-No. 8 Oklahoma State that snapped their overall five-game losing streak, was trying to set up for a final shot before halftime when Kenny Chery threw an errant pass that Wiggins intercepted. "Round 1 is over in the league. We have to do better in Round 2," Baylor coach Scott Drew said. "The good thing is I believe we can win every game, but with the Big 12 being like it is we can lose every game. We have to make sure we play well to have a chance to win." Baylor has never won consecutive games over Top 25 opponents. The Bears shot only 29 per cent from the field (16 of 55) -- Drew, looking for a positive, pointed out they did have assists on all but one of those made baskets. They were outrebounded 45-31. Kansas was coming off an 81-69 loss Saturday at surging Texas. "We just came out there without energy. I felt like even though Texas played that tremendous game out there, we kind of beat ourselves," said Tharpe, who sat the final 10 minutes of that game when had only three points on 1-of-4 shooting. "We didnt come out with any kind of energy, we had nothing. After they made a play, we had nothing coming back. So we knew coming into today in Waco, we had to come out with some fire right away. And thats what we did." In their regular season finale last March, the Jayhawks lost 81-58 at Baylor. They still had a share of their ninth consecutive Big 12 title, but that loss kept them from winning it outright. Baylor was within 49-44 midway through the second half and Wiggins had just shot and missed the rim. But the Bears missed three free throws on the same possession. Then, with Baylor students chanting "Air Ball!, Air Ball!", Wiggins swished a 3-pointer from the right wing. Wiggins scored again on the next possession to push the lead to 54-44, and had the next basket as well with a dunk with 7:49 left. Brady Heslip had 12 points on four 3-pointers, but didnt score again after his last gave Baylor a 22-21 lead with 6:34 left in the first half. "We were just playing him behind his numbers. We were running behind him," Tharpe said of second-half adjustments on Heslip. "We just knew that he got a lot of good looks off in the first half, and we couldnt let that happen again." Barcelona, still without the injured Lionel Messi, again turned to Neymar after his hat trick against Celtic in the Champions League on Wednesday to convert a penalty on the half-hour mark and restore the lead in the 68th after Villarreal levelled. In an interview with La Presse this week, the five-time Stanley Cup champion and three-time NHL scoring leader specifically took aim at wingers Thomas Vanek and Max Pacioretty, saying they cant show up in a 7-4 win over the New York Rangers in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Final and come up empty in Game 6. "Guys like Vanek and Pacioretty, you cant keep that on your team," he told the Montreal newspaper. "They should remain at homee if theyre not willing to pay the price.dddddddddddd Your team will never win with players like that who fade when theres adversity." Pacioretty, 25, tallied 60 points in 73 regular season games with the Canadiens, including a career-high 39 goals. He registered five goals and 11 points in 17 playoff games. Pacioretty is signed for five more seasons with a $4.5 million cap hit. Vanek, who was acquired by the Canadiens at the trade deadline and becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1, scored five goals and 10 points in 17 postseason games. OXNARD, Calif. -- Tony Romo wrapped up his most strenuous day so far at training camp by saying his surgically repaired back would get a rest: He will not play in the preseason opener at San Diego. The Dallas quarterback also planned to sit out a day of practice this week, the latest indication that the Cowboys are closely managing the 34-year-old Romos recovery. Romo pushed himself through a long practice on the teams ninth workout day of camp Sunday. He had been off the previous two days and skipped two practices earlier. "It doesnt feel that much different than the other days, but were just out here more time and with more plays," Romo said after throwing 25 passes in 7-on-7 and team drills Sunday. "Weve been executing real well so it was good to see that again today." Seven months removed from surgery for a herniated disk, Romo says hes 100 per cent but acknowledges that his workout routine has changed significantly. He gets cold water treatment three times a day. And hes constantly stretching and exercising the muscles around the back. He says that back surgery means "you kind of have to change the way you do things." "But that doesnt mean you cant do the things that it takes to be successful on the field or whatever you want to do," Romo said. "Theres been plenty of people whove done it. You just got to go do it. It just takes work." Romo has tested the back by going through consecutive afternoon practices several times in camp. But he hasnt done three in a row yet, and wont this week. If the camp model becomes part of the routine in the regular season, Romo could be sitting out a practice each week. "If it was up to me, I am going to do everything," Romo said. "And then theyll say, Youre done. You did too much. We go, go, go and then youre hurt, and youre out instead of being smart. So thats why we have a lot of people that are smart and take this progression a long way." With Romo saying hes out, Brandon Weeden is likely to get the start against the Chargers on Thursday night. "Hes going to be smart about it," Weeden said of Romo. "I dont worry about it. If hes 34, 39, doesnt really matter. Hes a franchise quarterback. Hes been doing it for so long. He knows what it takes." NOTES: The Cowboys have signed DEs Kenneth Boatright and Adewale Ojomo and waived OG Darius Morris and WR LDamian Washington. ... Edmonton opened the season with an 0-4-1 mark and had dropped three straight in regulation before posting a 3-2 win Monday against the visiting Tampa Bay Lightning. The win over the Bolts kept the Oilers from setting a new club record for worst ever start to a season. Edmonton had tied the dubious team mark with its five-game winless streak to begin 2014-15. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored the game-winning goal with 3:25 to play in the third period on Monday, but earlier in the tilt Taylor Hall had sparked his club with a penalty-shot goal. Hall, who also posted an assist in the win, received a penalty shot opportunity at 14:57 of the second period with the score tied at 1-1. Hall was pulled down from behind by Matt Carle on a breakaway and he converted the ensuing penalty shot by slipping a backhand between Ben Bishops pads. I havent been too good on breakaways or penalty shots or shootouts in my career, said Hall. I would have looked pretty silly if it didnt go in, but luckily it did. Brett Connolly tied the game for Tampa at 6:05 of the third period, but Nugent-Hopkins would tally the decisive goal less than three minutes later. Jordan Eberle picked off a cross-ice pass in the Tampa end and passed it over to the slot where Nugent-Hopkins was able to snap it under the glove of Bishop for a 3-2 lead. Justin Schultz also scored for the Oilers and Ben Scrivens posted 22 stops in the victory. Edmontons Richard Bachman could see his first action between the pipes tonight. He has 35 career NHL games under his belt, but has never faced the Capitals. While the Oilers shoot for their second win of the campaign, Washington is aiming to pick up its third consecutive victory. The Capitals have yet to lose in regulation this season, posting a 3-0-2 record in five tilts under new head coach Barry Trotz. The Caps went 2-0-1 on a recent three-game homestand, ending the stay at Verizon Center with wins over New Jersey and Florida. Alex Ovechkin went without a goal for the first time in four games in Saturdays meeting with the Panthers, but he scored in the shootout to help Washington pick up a 2-1 decision. In fact, all three Capitals skaters beat Al Montoya in the shootout -- Evgeny Kuznetsov and Nicklas Backstrom with snap shots to the stick side and Ovechkin with a nice shoulder fake that sent the Panthers goalie to the ice.dddddddddddd Ovechkin had scored five goals in the previous three games after being shut out by Montreal in the season opener on Oct. 9. He had a chance to end it in overtime but his slap shot from the left circle was stopped by Montoya. Caps netminder Justin Peters had 20 saves in regulation and overtime, while Jason Chimera scored in regulation for the Capitals. You have to scratch out whatever games presented, said Trotz. Tonight was a game (against a team) thats scrappy with a good group of forwards that play a fast game, a hard game and we couldnt get a second goal to pull away. Ovechkin has piled up the points in eight career games against the Oilers, registering seven goals and five assists in those tilts. Meanwhile, Braden Holtby, who expects to start in net tonight for the Caps, is 3-0 with a 1.00 GAA in three lifetime meetings versus Edmonton. The Caps won both encounters with the Oilers in 2013-14, scoring four goals in each tilt to outscore Edmonton 8-3 in the season series. Washington has claimed four of the last five meetings overall and has taken two of the past three at Rexall Place. The home team, however, has won three of four and 16 of the previous 19 meetings in this series and the Caps have eight losses over their last 10 trips to Edmonton. Washington forward Jay Beagle could see his first action of the season tonight after getting injured during the preseason. Beagle expects to take Brooks Laichs spot in the lineup tonight after Laich sustained a shoulder injury in Saturdays win over the Panthers. Sun City, South Africa (SportsNetwork.com) - Luke Donald fired a 9-under 63 in Fridays second round of the Nedbank Golf Challenge and he moved two strokes ahead of first-round leader Ross Fisher. Donald jumped to 10-under-par 134. His 63 missed the course record at Gary Player Country Club by one stroke. Donald is playing this event for the seventh time, with a tie for fifth in 2005 being his best finish. Its been a while since Ive gone really low. Ive been seeing some signs of a lot of improvement in the last few weeks and some lower rounds in the mid to high 60s, but obviously nine birdies around this place is a great round and something I was very pleased with, Donald said. I felt very in control. Its been a while since I felt like that. It was nice to play a solid round. Fisher dropped three shots in three holes on the back nine en route to carding a 2-under 70. He is alone in second place at minus-8. Alexander Levy (70) is in third place at 6-under-par 137. Danny Willett carded a 4-under 68 to move into fourth at minus-5, while Marcel Siem (72) is one stroke further back at 4-under 140. Tim Clark (71) and Charl Schwartzel (71) stand at 3-under-par 141. They were joined in sixth place by Thongchai Jaidee (70), Brendon Todd (68) and Tommy Fleetwood (67). Fisher dropped in back-to-back birdies at three and four to move to 8-under, where he led by two. As Fisher ran off five straight pars from the fifth, Donald made his move. Donald, who was four groups ahead of Fisher, reeled off three birdies in the first four holes to move to 4-under. After a birdie at the sixth, Donald rolled in a 3-footer for birdie on No. 7. The former world No. 1 birdied the ninth to inch within one of Fisher, then converted a 4-footer for birdie at 10 and that gave him a piece of the lead. Donald briefly grabbed the lead with a birdie at 13, but Fisher drained a 10- foot eagle effort on the par-5 10th to move atop the leaderboard at minus-10. Donald joined him there as he made birdie at 14. Fisher reclaimed the lead at 11, rolling in an 8-foot birdie try, but it was all downhill from there. His tee shot at the par-3 12th took a bad bounce into a bush. After taking an unplayable lie, he chipped across the green and 2-putted from the fringe for double-bogey. Fisher took another penalty at the par-5 14th, which led to a bogey that dropped him two behind Donald. Donald wrapped up his round with four pars in a row. Ive always found the front nine a little more testing to score and to go 6- under was a perfect start, Donald said. Yesterday, I struggled a little early on, but today I got off to a great start and kept the momentum going. Fisher also parred the last four holes to end two behind. NOTES: Donald has four top-10 finishes in his six previous starts at this event ... Donalds last victory was in 2012 ... Jamie Donaldson withdrew before the second round due to severe migraines ... Play was briefly halted as there was a minute of silence in memory of Nelson Mandela, who died one year ago to the day ... CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Panthers say theyd like to find a replacement for longtime No. 1 wide receiver Steve Smith in this years NFL draft. The big question is when theyll do it. The Panthers have the 28th overall pick, but the NFC South champions have a variety of needs after getting hit hard in free agency, and could go in a number of directions with their first-round choice. General manager Dave Gettleman said recently that wide receiver, offensive tackle and cornerback are among the teams top needs, but qualified that statement by adding he wont got out of his way to land one. "When you reach for a position of need youre in trouble," he said. Gettleman said he has some reservations about drafting a receiver in the first round because it often takes them longer to adjust to the NFL game than those who play other positions. "History tells you that its a very difficult position to assimilate into (the NFL), especially with the current game being played at the college level," Gettleman said. Gettleman called it a "wide receiver heavy" draft that includes several players whove put up big numbers. He said the trick is finding guys who can easily make the transition to the next level. "Ill look at a guy and hes caught 90 balls ... but of those 45 were flash screens," Gettleman said. "The other 45 he caught, he ran to three spots. So, do they understand coverage? Theyre going to have to learn the whole route tree. How long is it going to take them to assimilate? Its an issue. Its a problem." Smith was released in a salary cap move earlier this off-season. Replacing his toughness and production wont be easy. He caught 836 passes for 12,197 yards and 67 touchdowns for the Panthers in 13 seasons. However, after averaging 76 receptions for 1,284 yards receiving and 5.5 touchdowns in his first two seasons playing with quarterback Cam Newton, Smiths numbers fell off in 2013. He caught 64 passes for 745 yards and four TDs. The Panthers signed free agents Jerricho Cotchery, Jason Avant and Tiquan Underwood, but none is expected to become the next No. 1 receiver in Carolina. Five things to watch from the Panthers in the draft: ON THE FRONT BURNER: Jordan Gross retired this off-season, leaving a huge hole at left tackle — one the Panthers potentially could address in Round 1. Gettleman said there are some tackles in the draft dont have "left tackle feet," but said that doesnt necessarily matter. "There are only so many elite tackles," he said. "There are plenty of guys playing left tackle in this league that dont have classic left tackle feet." Finding a left tackle might take on added importance given Newton is coming off ankle surgery this off-season. FIRST ROUND SUCCESS: The Panthers have had tremendous success with their first-round picks the last three seasons. They grabbed defensive tackle Star Lotulelei from Utah at No. 14 in 2013, and he looks like hes going to be around the league for quite a while. They drafted linebacker Luke Kuechly at No. 11 in 2012 and quarterback Cam Newton first overall the year before that. Kuechly was the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, while Newton was the Offensive Rookie of the Year in 2011. BLUE GOOSE: Last year, Gettleman said the Panthers needed to add some "hog mollies," or big linemen. This year, the Boston native switched gears, saying if there is a "blue goose" pass rusher available at No. 28 he wouldnt pass on him. Tough to know what a blue-winged bird native to Ethiopia has to do with building a football team, though. CORNERBACK ON RADAR: The Panthers lost starting cornerback Captain Munnerlyn to Minnesota in free agency. While they signed free agent Antoine Cason, dont rule out cornerback as an option with one of the teams top three picks. The Panthers have one pick in each of the seven rounds. DONT BE REACHING: The Panthers are determined not to reach for picks at positions of need. They followed that plan last year and took defensive tackle Kawaan Short from Purdue in the second round — even after selecting Lotulelei in the first. "Last year, K.K. (Short) was obviously the best value in that second-round pick," Gettleman said. ___ AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP_NFL Reid Boucher Jersey . Thomas Vanek Jersey . -- Cole De Vries had a couple of key strikeouts during what could have been the inning that doomed him to defeat against the Kansas City Royals, allowing him to escape further damage and keep the game tied up.CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Panthers coach Ron Rivera still isnt sure wholl protect quarterback Cam Newtons blindside this season. But he doesnt seem overly worried. The Panthers have been searching for a replacement for longtime left tackle Jordan Gross, who retired earlier this off-season. Byron Bell, last years starting right tackle, and Nate Chandler, a converted defensive tackle, have been working as the starting tackles during OTAs. Theyve been flip-flopping from left to right tackle, depending on the day. Neither has played left tackle before in the NFL. Rivera said veteran Garry Williams, who is coming off a knee injury, could also figure into the mix once healthy. "Weve not decided on a lot of positions yet," Rivera said. "The biggest thing we have right now is competition and guys working. ... Well see how we are once we get into training camp." Newton hasnt participated in OTAs except to throw on the side. He said he could be ready for minicamp next week, but at the very least should be completely healthy when training camp begins July 24. "Come game time, its no doubt in my mind that every single person will be ready to go. That is what OTAs and minicamp are designed for -- to get these guys prepared, to get myself prepared," Newton said. "When that ball is snapped I have full confidence in Nate Chandler and Byron Bell that they will get the job done." While many teams invest millions in protecting their quarterbacks blindside, the Panthers seem to be taking a chance with lower-priced players who havent played the position. Bell and Chandler will make a combined $2.6 million this season. Both players insist they dont have a preference on which position they play. "Were both getting an equal opportunity to win a job, which is nice," Chandler said.dddddddddddd Said Bell: "I really dont care. Either position, wherever coach sees being the best fit for either one of us is fine. Im just trying to win football games. If that means left tackle, right tackle or on the bench, wherever the team needs me is fine." Filling Gross shoes wont be easy. A three-time Pro Bowl selection, Gross started 167 games during his 10 seasons with the Panthers and was a member of the Super Bowl team as a rookie in 2003. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound Chandler is an intriguing story. He was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012 out of UCLA. He started his career with the Bruins as an offensive lineman, but later moved to tight end as a sophomore and then to defensive tackle for his final two seasons. When he arrived in Carolina he saw spot duty at defensive tackle a rookie, playing in 10 games with five tackles in 2012. But coaches thought with Chandlers combination of quickness and size he might be more valuable on the offensive line, so they moved him there last year in training camp. Chandler started eight games in 2013 -- six at right guard and two at right tackle -- due to injuries. Bell was also undrafted. He came out of New Mexico in 2011 and was thrust in the mix as a rookie. Hes started 41 games over the past three seasons for Carolina -- all but one of those at right tackle. "Im left handed, so Ill feel comfortable over there," said Bell, who started three years at left tackle at New Mexico. "But if it is right tackle, Im certainly fine over there. "The big thing is we as an offensive line have to do is go in with the mindset that we have to keep No. 1 (Newton) upright. And if you have a bad play, you have to forget about and move on the next one because that (pass rusher) will be coming again." WATFORD, England -- Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder expects to start against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday in London despite a rib injury. Ponder, injured early in last Sundays 31-27 loss to the Cleveland Browns, emerged from the Vikings first practice in the U.K. on Wednesday confident that he will play at Wembley Stadium. "Its a little sore and its going to be something I will have to work through but I threw more than I thought I would be able to," Ponder said. "Well wait to see how this week plays out, but my expectation and my hope is that I will be playing." Vikings coach Leslie Frazier said Wednesdays practice would "be a big signal in what direction well have to go," with a decision expected by Friday. Backup quarterback Matt Cassell also took snaps on Wednesday, and he is ready to step in if Ponder is unavailable to play. Ponder has been under pressure since the loss to the Browns dropped the Vikings to 0-3. The third-year quarterback has thrown five interceptions and two touchdowns for a 65.9 passing rating, and has also lost two fumbles. "My confidence hasnt wavered," said Ponder, who led the Vikings to the playoffs last season. "I have a great support staff around me with Adrian Peterson and the staff around me." Peterson said he was always ready to give Ponder a pep talk, as he did when fans at Mall of America Field began jeering the quarterback during the Cleveland loss. "Hes bouncing back," the Vikings running back said. "I told him, You know the business. You know how it goes. Just stay focused and continue to work. You know what to do." Frazier said defensive backs Chris Cook (groin) and A.J. Jefferson (ankle) would sit out Wednesdays practice, but safety Jamarca Sanford (hamstring) would take part. Fullback Jerome Felton also is returning from a three-game suspension to provide an extra blocker in the Vikings backfield. The Steelers are also 0-3 going into the first of two NFL International Series games to be played in London this season. LOS ANGELES -- Josh Beckett and Adam Wainwright were both on their game in a pitching duel that exceeded all expectations. Pinch-hitter Justin Turner delivered an RBI single in the eighth inning off Wainwright, and the Los Angeles Dodgers edged the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 Thursday night in their first meeting since last years NL championship series. Beckett pitched seven sharp innings in his showdown with the Cardinals ace, who held the Dodgers hitless through five. Left fielder Matt Kemp helped Beckett by throwing out a runner at the plate in the seventh. Beckett scattered four hits, walked two and struck out four. The right-hander has a 1.34 ERA over his last seven starts, a stretch that began with his no-hitter in Philadelphia on May 25. His season ERA is 2.11 in 15 starts. "I knew it was going to be tough, but I dont think I deserve very much of the credit," Beckett said. "My defence really picked me up tonight, and we got a late run off of a pretty tough pitcher." Juan Uribe, just off the disabled list after missing 34 games with a right hamstring strain, led off the eighth with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Drew Butera before rookie Miguel Rojas infield single put runners at the corners. Turner, batting for reliever Brian Wilson, came through with his 20th RBI of the season. "I think hes used to that. Hes gotten some big hits for us this year," Kemp said. "Hes always ready to hit, and tonight he got the big hit. It was a battle today. It was a battle of the pitchers -- two good pitchers going at it, and we had to wait out Wainwright." Wilson (1-2) tossed a perfect inning and Kenley Jansen got three outs for his 24th save. "Thats how playoff games usually are -- 1-0. When we play them, its always two good teams going at it," Kemp said. "I think our pitchers match up with their pitchers, and vice versa. Weve had some battles over the years, and theyve gotten the best of us the last couple of years. But hopefully we can grind it out and see them in the playoffs again this year." The Cardinals won 97 games last season, five more than Los Angeles, and beat the Dodgers in the NLCS. Wainwright won Game 3 at Dodger Stadium. This time, Wainwright (10-4) took a hard-luck loss, giving up five hits while going the distance for the 19th time in 201 regular-season starts. The right-hander was runner-up to Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw in last years NL Cy Young Award voting. "I think one run would have been enough tonight the way he was throwing the ball," said Cardinals second baseman Mark Ellis, a former Dodger. "He was typical Wainwright. He has four above-average pitches and throws them wherever he wants. He knows their lineup and how to throw those guys." Wainwright walked his first batter, Dee Gordon, then retired 15 in a row before Rojas led off the sixth with a clean single to left field. Beckett followed with a Texas Leaguer to right, and Allen Craig made a diving catch with the outfield playing shallow against the pitcher. Gordon followed with a bloop single to left, but Yasiel Puig grounded into a double play. Puig, the NL player of the month for May, is batting .242 with no homers, six RBIs and 25 strikeouts in 25 games since his last home run on May 28 against Cincinnatis Homer Bailey at Dodger Stadium. Craig hit a two-out double in the seventh, just beyond Puigs reach on the right-field warning track, then tried to score on Jon Jays sharp single to left. Kemp charged the ball and threw a perfect strike to Butera in front of the plate for a sweep tag as Beckett thrust both arms over his head in jubilation. Cardinals manager Mike Matheny challenged the call by umpire Vic Carapazza, but a replay review upheld the decision and the game remained scoreless. "I wasnt surprised they sent him. Right there in the late innings, its do or die," Kemp said. "I got a good jump on it, got to the ball quick and threw it. Butera made a good tag and we got the out. Defence is just as important as offence. Defence won us that game today." NOTES: Cardinals RHP Joe Kelly, on the DL with a left hamstring strain thats sidelined him for 66 games, is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Triple-A Memphis. ... Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez missed his third straight game with a sore right shoulder and had an MRI. ... The Dodgers flight from Kansas City didnt arrive in Los Angeles until about 2 a.m. following their 5-4 win over the Royals, and manager Don Mattingly called off batting practice. ... The Cardinals began a five-game stretch in which they will face all three pitchers who have thrown no-hitters this season, including Kershaw on Sunday and San Franciscos Tim Lincecum on Tuesday. ... BATON ROUGE, La. -- Apparently, new LSU offensive co-ordinator Cam Cameron is doing something right. Zach Mettenbergers single-game school record five touchdown passes against UAB attested to that. Three of Mettenbergers scoring strikes went to Odell Beckham Jr., who also returned a missed field goal 100 yards for a score, and the ninth-ranked Tigers overwhelmed the Blazers 56-17 on Saturday night. Mettenberger, who had 12 TD passes in all of 2012, has six through this seasons first two games, and credited both the athleticism of his receivers and the confidence hes gained from working with Cameron, who returned to college last winter after more than a decade in the NFL. "He knows the talent we have on this team offensively," Mettenberger said. "We are going to stick to the passing game. Obviously we showed tonight that if we execute like we did tonight that there is all the reason to have confidence in us." In most seasons since Les Miles took over in 2005, LSU has been a power running team with a deep stable of ball carriers. One exception would have been 2006, when Jamarcus Russell was throwing to Dwayne Bowe, Craig Davis and Early Doucet. Now its Mettenberger building what looks like prolific chemistry with Beckham and Jarvis Landry. "You get a lot of opportunities in this offensive system," Beckham said. "Coach Cam has instilled in us a different mentality. ... Its just crazy. I never would expect it to be the way it is and its just phenomenal to be a part of." The running backs were still involved, of course. Jeremy Hill made his season debut for LSU (2-0) when coach Les Miles decided early in the second quarter to end the running backs benching in connection with his arrest in a bar scuffle last spring. After sitting out a game and a quarter, Hill rushed for a 3-yard touchdown on his first carry and wound up rushing six times for 50 yards. "I wanted to get him going," Miles said. "Theres a guy that has been away from his team for four months and not really in great shape. If you look at him, you can kind of tell. We wanted to get his timing and running the ball going." The Blazers (0-2) came in with a perfect record in Death Valley -- a stunning 13-10 last second win in their only other visit in 2000. It wasnt long before the Tigers put to rest any notion of that happening again. "They made plays. The loss was tough and it was painful," UAB linebacker Jake Ganus said. "We have a good game plan, but I think we need to executee it better.dddddddddddd" Beckham, who also returned a punt 60 yards to set up Kenny Hilliards 1-yard TD run, finished with 331 all-purpose yards. Mettenberger was 16 of 19 for 282 yards and was not intercepted. Beckhams 136 yards and three TDs receiving were both career highs. Landry, who had five catches for 71 yards, caught two touchdown passes, leaping and reaching high to snag his 24-yard score. Mettenberger put the ball where only Landry had a chance at it, out of the reach of a defensive back undercutting the route. Beckham had only two 100-yard receiving games as a sophomore last season. He has two in his first two games this season. The Tigers marched 89 yards in only five plays on their second series, thanks in large part to three catches for 87 yards by Beckham. His 49-yard reception set up his 29-yard score on a hard throw by Mettenberger, who hit his target in stride as two helpless defenders converged. Beckham started LSUs next drive with a 15-yard run on an end-around and finished it with a 22-yard TD catch. UAB reserve quarterback Jonathan Perry fumbled near his own 20 early in the second quarter, setting up Hills TD, which made it 28-0. Darren Reaves scored UABs first touchdown on a 12-yard run in the second quarter. Receiver Jamarcus Nelson added a 41-yard touchdown catch from Austin Brown that pulled UAB to 35-14. The Blazers added a field goal as time expired in the first half to get as close as 35-17. "There was a stretch in that game in the second quarter where we played pretty good football against one of the top programs in the country," UAB coach Garrick McGee said. "Then, we came out in the third quarter, we dropped some balls, we made some missed assignments, we didnt compete as hard." LSU responded with Beckhams third touchdown catch on a precision 27-yard pass to the corner of the end zone. But the highlight of Beckhams night, even if the game was in hand by then, may have come when he camped out in the back of the end zone for Ty Longs 59-yard field goal attempt. He told teammates before the play to be ready to block if he was able to run it out. He caught it deep in the end zone, and by the time the Blazers realized it, Beckham was sprinting down the left sideline with blockers in front of him. "He has a want to make a big play. Its a feel," Miles said. "Guys like Morris Claiborne or guys like Tyrann Mathieu that say we have to make a play -- I think he has the same penchant to say hey, I want to make this play." GLENDALE, Ariz. -- Blake Bortles rolled right, crashed into two defenders and floated a pass to an open receiver just before going down. The two players who had a beat on Central Floridas quarterback stayed on the ground, each pounding their hands into the turf as the receiver ran up the sideline. Out of reach all game, the Knights pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the bowl season by outlasting the nations top offensive team in a rousing BCS debut. Bortles stymied Baylor with his arm and legs while accounting for four touchdowns, Storm Johnson ran for three more scores and No. 15 Central Florida turned the highest-scoring Fiesta Bowl into a big-play party by outlasting the sixth-ranked Bears 52-42 on Wednesday night. "Theres not many outside of us who believe we had a chance, but we did and I think we showed what UCF football is all about," Bortles said. Central Florida (12-1) wasnt given much of a chance at all, entering the game as a 17-point underdog. The Knights didnt care about the spread and certainly didnt back down from the big, bad Bears, racing past Baylor with an array of big plays. They took an early 14-point lead and kept rolling, piling up 556 total yards in the second-highest scoring BCS bowl ever. Bortles, the junior who could be weighing a jump to the NFL, was the catalyst, throwing for three touchdowns on 20-of-31 passing and running for 93 yards and another score. Rannell Hall accounted for some of the biggest plays, catching four passes for 113 yards and two touchdowns. Johnson kept Baylor from ganging up on UCFs passing game, grinding out 124 yards on 20 carries. So much about having no shot. "Its a great win, a great feeling for everyone whos been through the program," UCF coach George OLeary said. Known for its offence prowess, Baylor (11-2) had a hard time keeping up with the Knights. The Big 12 champions finished with 550 total yards, but were uncharacteristically undisciplined, getting 17 penalties for 135 yards. Bryce Petty tried to keep the Bears in it, running for three touchdowns while throwing for 356 yards and two more scores. Lache Seastrunk had some big runs in the first half and finished with 117 yards. None of it was enough the way UCF ran through Baylors defence. "We caught a football team that was hot," Baylor coach Art Briles said. "They played extremely well early, got into us. We tried to play catch up the whole game, never could turn it around when it needed turning." The Fiesta Bowl was the BCS coming-out party for Baylor and Central Florida before college footballs switch to a playoff system next season. The Bears had been building toward this since Briles became coach in 2009, winding up his high-octane offence to lead the nation in scoring and churn out the second-most yards in FBS history. Central Florida had a slower rise under OLeary. The coach who was fired by Notre Dame five days after being hired for lying on his resume has built his reputation back up in Orlando, taking a program that went winless in 2004 to the inaugural American Athletic Conference title and automatic BCS berth this year. The matchup was projected to be like the 2011 Fiesta Bowl, when mighty Oklahoma rolled over Connecticut 48-20. The Knights werent listening. They opened with a 76-yard scoring drive capped by Johnsons tackle-breaking 11-yard touchdown run. Johnson scored again on UCFs next possession, this one on a 2-yard run. The early 14-0 lead was expected. The team leading wasnt. Baylor finally revved up its offence late in the first quarter, scoring on a 1-yard TD sneak by Petty and Central Florida looked as if it was ready to fall apart with turnovers on three consecutive plays. Baylor only turned one of those into points: a 30-yard pass from Petty to Levi Norwood. Petty followed Johnsons fumble with an interception in the end zone, just his third of the season. "Unfortunately, that was the turning point in the game," Petty said. "We needed that to save momentum up for us, especially after a turnover. Turnovers in the red zone kill an offence." Then came the spectacular plays, seemingly one after another. Hall darted and dashed through Baylors defence for a 50-yard touchdown on a screen pass, with help from Josh Reeses downfield block. Petty hurtled himself into the end zone, flipping over UCFs Brandon Alexander to cap a 13-yard run. That gave Baylor 659 points, breaking the NCAA record for a 13-game season set by Texas (652) in 2005. The momentum was gone shortly after, when Hall turned a swing pass into a 34-yard touchdown -- assisted again by Reese -- to put the Knights up 28-20 at halftime. Petty scored his third touchdown on 1-yard run in the third quarter and dashed in for the 2-point conversion to tie the game, but Central Florida still wouldnt back down. Bortles hit Breshad Perriman on a 10-yard touchdown pass and opened the fourth quarter by scoring on a 15-yard run to put the Knights up 42-28. Even after Baylor moved quickly for a 9-yard touchdown run by Glasco Martin, UCF had an answer, going up 49-35 on Johnsons 40-yard run through the heart of the Bears defence. Chad Henne Jersey . And all things considered, the first 40 games have offered a little bit of everything from a hockey club that faced many questions in its first year under new management, with a new head coach and with a number of new faces in the lineup. However, with a recent dip in scoring, it seems some of the same old questions persist and several new ones have been raised after a somewhat troubling homestand. http://www.prochiefsauthentic.com/Youth-...l-Elite-Jersey/. Petty went 23 of 34 for 416 yards through three quarters, and Shock Linwood had 98 yards rushing and two touchdowns for Baylor (3-0). Hawthorne Lynx and Jay Lee each caught two touchdowns passes. It was Pettys first game since he cracked two small bones in his back during a season-opening 45-0 win against SMU. The Bears scored on their first four possessions on their way to a 35-0 halftime lead. Baylor had more touchdowns (five) than Buffalo had first downs (four) in the first half. The Bulls (1-2) scored twice on consecutive possessions in the third quarter. Joe Licata hit Devon Hughes for 41-yard touchdown pass, and Anthone Taylor scored on a 41-yard run. The Bears showed no signs of fatigue in their third game in 13 days after blowing out their first two opponents at home. Coming off a 70-6 win of FCS Northwestern State, Baylor has now outscored its opponents 178-27 this season. The defending Big 12 champs now get a two-week break before opening their conference schedule at Iowa State on Sept. 27. Bears freshman receiver KD Cannon scored on an electrifying 89-yard catch. Backup quarterback Seth Russell threw a 37-yard touchdown pass to Lee, and also scored on a 31-yard run. Linwood opened the scoring on a 2-yard run and also added a 24-yard score, when he burst up the middle untouched. Johnny Jefferson also scored on a 14-yard run. The Mid-American Conference Bulls, who lost 70-13 at Baylor last season, scored on consecutive possessions in the third quarter. Joe Licata hit Devon Hughes for 41-yard touchdown pass, and Anthone Taaylor scored on a 41-yard run that cut Baylors lead to 42-14 with 7:09 left in the period.dddddddddddd The touchdowns were the first surrendered by the Bears this year. Licata was 14 of 21 for 171 yards, and Hughes had six catches for 72 yards. Backup quarterback Tony Daniel closed the scoring with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Malcolm Robinson. The Bears grabbed control during a four-play stretch six minutes into the game. With Buffalo facing third-and-7 on its opening drive, Licata found Marcus McGill wide open up the right sideline only to have the ball bounce off the receivers fingers. Buffalo was forced to punt, and the Bears capitalized. Petty made it 14-0 by hitting a wide-open Cannon, who burst past defensive back Okezie Alozie up the right sideline. Baylor has now topped 40 points in four straight games dating to last season, and 28 of its past 35. The Bears maintained their roll on offence despite missing four key receivers. Antwan Goodley (quadriceps), Levi Norwood (wrist), Corey Coleman (hamstring) and Clay Fuller (broken collarbone) all sat out. Cannon, an 18-year-old freshman, continues to provide a big-play threat. He had five catches for 171 yards a week after finishing with six catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns. Bulls fans were asked to wear black, and the team unveiled new black helmets and mostly black jerseys as part of a promotion at UB stadium. The blackout, however, quickly turned into a blowout courtesy of Baylors high-tempo, quick scoring attack. The Bears finished with 669 yards of offence and 27 first downs. Their quick-strike attack was on track with six of nine scoring drives lasting less than two minutes.
