KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Raul Mondesi celebrated an unforgettable 21st birthday.Mondesi had two infield singles, leading to four runs and two pitchers throwing errors -- plus a protest by the Los Angeles Angels -- as the Kansas City Royals rallied for a 7-5 victory on Wednesday night.Mondesi had a bunt single for his first big league hit, with two runs scoring on the play on pitcher Matt Shoemakers throwing error in the seventh inning. This one I enjoy, Mondesi said of his birthday. Playing with these guys, this is amazing.Shoemaker, who did not allow a base runner until the fifth inning, yielded singles to Alex Gordon and Paulo Orlando to start the seventh. Mondesi, called up Tuesday, put down a bunt and beat the throw to first as the throw by Shoemaker (5-11) sailed into right field. Both runners scored and Mondesi wound up on third.Thats part of my game, Mondesi said of bunting. I like it. I enjoy bunting and with that throw we score two runs.Angels manager Mike Scioscia came out claiming interference, that Mondesi was not running within the lines, and after a 6 minute, 15 second review the call on the field was not changed. Scioscia officially protested the game.Royals manager Ned Yost said there is no way the protest would be upheld. You cant protest a judgmental call, Yost said. Ive never protested a game. Ive never been part of a game that was protested.Scioscia had a completely opposite viewpoint, saying he is 100 percent certain the protest would be upheld. Its not a judgement call, Scioscia said. I would not have protested if I was not 100 percent correct on this. This is a misinterpretation of a rule. It was very clear. Phil Cuzzi, the home plate umpire, had Mondesi running inside the line in jeopardy the whole way, and stated that its okay because he was stepping back toward the bag, which is wrong.Jarrod Dyson rifled a triple to right, scoring Mondesi and making all the runs earned. Dyson scored on Alcides Escobars sacrifice fly.Mondesi added a run-scoring infield single in a two-run eighth. The second run scored on pitcher Jose Alvarerzs throwing error.Joakim Soria (4-4) pitched a scoreless inning for the win after replacing left-hander Danny Duffy in the seventh. Duffy allowed three runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking out five.Shoemaker was charged with five runs on eight hits in six-plus innings.Albert Pujols walked with the bases loaded with one out in the ninth and Andrelton Simmons singled in another run before Wade Davis struck out Jett Bandy to end the game.Gordon and Orlando each contributed three hits. Orlando had two doubles and a fifth-inning RBI.Jefry Marte had two doubles and a RBI for the Angels, while Johnny Giavotella had his second consecutive three-hit game.ROYALS MEETINGWith several Royals names surfacing in trade rumors, Yost addressed it in a team meeting. These guys are a real, real close group, Yost said. They know that this trade deadline (Monday) is bearing down on them. They dont want to see anybody leave that room. They want to see us all continue to stay together. Thats adding a little bit of anxiety and urgency to their game. But sometimes it can be a little too much. Theyre trying to make things happen, instead of letting things develop. Just catch your breath.OUTFIELD DEBUTGregorio Petit, who had only played the infield professionally, started in left field for the Angels. Were trying to get another right-handed bat in there and get Greg some at-bats, Scioscia said. Hes been working out there for the last two months.TRAINERS ROOMAngels: OF Shane Robinson (sprained right ankle) will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Class-A Inland Empire in the California League.Royals: OF Lorenzo Cain (strained left hamstring) went 1 for 4 with a single and a strikeout while playing seven innings in right field.UP NEXTAngels: RHP Jered Weaver will start Thursday at Anaheim against the Red Sox, who will counter with LHP David Price.Royals: RHP Yordano Ventura, who lost to the Rangers on Saturday, will face them again Thursday in the opener of a four-game series at Arlington. BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Sabres center Jack Eichel declared hes cleared every hurdle in recovering from a sprained left ankle, and coach Dan Bylsma said theres a possibility the center will make his season debut at Ottawa on Tuesday.Well see, Bylsma said Monday, giving no guarantees that Eichel will play against the Senators. But Bylsma noted he was impressed by how the player performed during consecutives days of rigorous practices.Jack looks good on the ice, Bylsma said. It was a big test for him yesterday and seeing how he came in today was a big step for whether were going to see him tomorrow.Eichel practiced with his expected linemates, Evander Kane and Sam Reinhart, and also assumed his familiar role on the teams top power-play unit. The next test is seeing whether Eichel experiences any setbacks overnight before determining whether hell play.Eichel has been out since hurting the ankle during practice on Oct. 12, a day before Buffalos season opener against Montreal. He began practicing with the team last week and was scheduled to board the Sabres flight for a road trip for the first time this season. Its a step in the right direction just being able to head out there and put my best foot forward, but who knows what will happen tomorrow night, he said. The patience is starting to wear thin, but youve got to make sure youre being smart.Eichel, college hockeys top player during his freshman season at Boston University, was selected with the No. 2 pick in the 2015 draft. He led the Sabres in scoring 24 goals and finished second among NHL rookies with 56 points in 81 games,Eichels pending return has the potential of providing the Sabres a boost, particularly on a sputtering offense.Buffalo (7-9-5) has scored one or fewer goals in regulation 12 times this season, including eight of its past 12 outings.Injuries have played a factor. Center Ryan OReilly returned last week after missed five games with a strained oblique, while Evander Kane missed 11 games with broken ribs.Buffalo is still playing without forward Tyler Ennis (sports hernia) and defensemen Zach Bogosian (sprained knee) and Dmitry Kulikov (lower back).Eichels mere presence in practice provided the Sabres a lift, with several teammates notably tapping their sticks each time Eichel scored.I think you see thats a little bit of relief for everybody, Bylsma said.Eichel is eager to come to the rescue for a team thats 2-1-1 in its past four since ending a 0-6-2 skid. These are my best buddies, these are my teammates. Youd like to go through adversity with them and be able to play, Eichel said. And not being able to do that has been pretty rough. Authentic Darius Phillips Jersey . Its not difficult to pinpoint the teams that have unexpectedly prospered or just as stunningly plummeted halfway through the 2016 season.Yep, were looking at you, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals. Last January, you played for a spot in the Super Bowl. Right now, youre hanging with the mediocrities (or worse) of the NFL.Nor is it hard to spot the surprisingly successful teams putting themselves in the championship mix, from the Dallas Cowboys to the Oakland Raiders. But what about the individuals who are rising or flopping? The Associated Press sports writers who cover the 16 AFC teams suggest the following.BALTIMORESurprise: LB Zachary Orr leads the team in tackles as a third-year player.Disappointment: QB Joe Flacco has looked tentative in the pocket and has more interceptions than TDs. Granted, the Ravens have no running game and the left side of the O-Line has been injured, but still ...BUFFALOSurprise: LB Lorenzo Alexander, maybe the most pleasant development in the NFL this season. The free-agent addition, a journeyman in his 10th season, is among the league leaders in sacks.Disappointment: WR Sammy Watkins (left foot) is hobbled by injury for the third straight season and is on IR, though he could return this month.CINCINNATISurprise: WR A.J. Green was leading the NFL in receptions when Cincinnati went on its bye despite being the focus of opposing defenses on every passing play.Disappointment: DT Geno Atkins had 42 tackles and 11 sacks last season. Through eight games, he has only 16 tackles and 3+ sacks, and the Bengals are 3-4-1.CLEVELANDSurprise: WR Terrelle Pryor only made the conversion from quarterback last season and has quickly developed into a playmaker. Through the first nine games, Pryor had 46 catches and four touchdowns.Disappointment: QB Robert Griffin III. Not his fault, but he broke a bone in his shoulder in the season opener that deprived him of a chance at a comeback and the Browns from seeing if he could be their long-term answer.DENVERSurprise: QB Trevor Siemian was an afterthought when Peyton Manning retired. Now hes the starting QB on a playoff contender.Disappointment; OT Russell Okung, who went through a stretch of five holding calls in three games and gave up a sack-strip.HOUSTONSurprise: DE Jadeveon Clowney, finally healthy after two injury-filled years. His move from outside linebacker has helped the Texans make up for the loss of J.J. Watt.Disappointment: QB Brock Osweiler got a $72 million contract and has thrown the same number of interceptions (nine) as touchdowns. Houstons passing game ranks among the worst in the league.INDIANAPOLISSurprise: TE Jack Doyle, claimed off waivers from Tennessee in 2013, has steadily progressed each season and already surpassed his previous career totals in yards and TD catches.Disappointment: Coach Chuck Pagano. After signing a four-year deal, being given more authority over some decisions and armed with a healthy Andrew Luck, it looked as if Pagano would take his second chance and run with it. Instead, the Colts have gotten stuck in neutral.JACKSONVILLESurprise: DE Yannick Ngakoue, a third-round pick from Maryland who has four sacks and three forced fumbles and has replaced Dante Fowler in the starting lineup.Disappointment: QB Blake Bortles has been so inaccurate and inconsistent that he brought in a mechanics coach for a two-day refresher course, a last-ditch effort to turn his season around.KANSAS CITYSurprise: WR Tyreek Hill, a fifth-round pick expected to be primarily a kick returner, already has 19 catches for 223 yards and four touchdowns.Disappointment: OLB Tamba Hali signed a three-year, $21 million contract when the Chiefs realized they would be without Justin Houston most of the season, but hes aging before their eyes.MIAMISurprise: RB Jay Ajayi has turned a weak ground game into a strength by averaging 6.0 yards per play and has six TDs.Disappointment: WR DeVante Parker, a 2015 first-rounder, has done little to establish himself as a complement to top target Jarvis Landry.NEW ENGLANDSurprise: RB LeGarrette Blount, whose production over the first four games coming off hip injury last season helped take the pressure off Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett.Disappointment: CB Cyrus Jones, a second-rounder, has struggled in his limited action returning punts, was ejected at Cleveland and hasnt played since.NEW YORK JETSSurprise: WR Quincy Enunwa, a sixth-rounder in 2014, has blossomed into a legitimate playmaker in Chan Gaileys offense. With Eric Decker out, Enunwa has stepped up as the No. 2 receiver behind Brandon Marshall.Disappointment: CB Darrelle Revis, a former shutdown defender, has looked mostly mediocre this season, no longer resembling the guy who left opposing teams best receivers stranded on Revis Island.OAKLANDSurprise: RB Jalen Richard, an undrafted free agent, has helped provide depth behind Latavius Murray.Disappointment: CB Sean Smith, a major free agent addition who got benched in the opener and struggled earlier in the season before showing some improvement of late.PITTSBURGHSurprise: WR Sammie Coates led the league in yards per reception (21.3) before injuring his left index finger. Hes been a long-distance threat.Disappointment: LB James Harrison is hardly the only disappointment on an underwhelming defense, but the 38-year-old got his first two sacks of the season this past weekend. Hes seen his playing time slowly decrease.SAN DIEGOSurprise: Top draft pick DE Joey Bosa. After a holdout and hamstring injury that cost him four games, he has become a force on the Chargers defense, particularly in opposing backfields.Disappointment: That the team couldnt get the rookie defensive end signed in time for training camp. A squabble over money he was due and offset language caused the No. 3 overall pick to miss camp. After signing, Bosa pulled the hamstring and the Chargers went 1/3 without him.TENNESSEESurprise: RB DeMarco Murray. For a player who looked washed up in Chip Kellys offense in Philadelphia last season and cost the Titans only swapping 13 spots in the fourth round of the draft, what a bargain.Disappointment: Rookie LB Kevin Dodd, the 33rd pick overall, has been a minimal contributor. The Titans could use more pressure from someone who had 12 sacks and 23+ tackles for loss last season at Clemson.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Authentic Roy Halladay Jersey . No. 13-seeded John Isner and No. 21 Philipp Kohlschreiber were among six players who dropped out of the tournament on Tuesday, joining No. 12 seed Tommy Haas and two other players who withdrew on Monday. Authentic Troy Tulowitzki Jersey . The defence is doing its part, too. Drew Brees threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first half and the guys on the other side made sure that was enough, sending the Saints to a 17-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. http://www.cheapbluejaysjerseys.us/authentic-j-a-happ-jersey/ . The 15th-ranked Canadian men lost the opening two games of their European tour: 19-15 to No. 17 Georgia and 21-20 to No. Authentic Aaron Sanchez Jersey . -- Al Jefferson found a groove just in time for the Charlotte Bobcats. Authentic Curtis Granderson Jersey . And when it opened, every player was at his stall. Thats a sure sign that a team is in a slump and is searching for answers. "Its embarrassing to be at home and play the way we did," said defenceman Josh Gorges. PHOENIX -- Rondae Hollis-Jefferson had a little extra energy on the court Saturday. The second-year pro learned just before the game that his mother had been flown in to Arizona to watch her son play. She watched from her second-row seat as Hollis-Jefferson scored a career-high 20 points with 13 rebounds in the Brooklyn Nets 122-104 victory over the Phoenix Suns.Just to have her here, that was more special to me than the 20 points, Hollis-Jefferson said. I winked at her about three times.Brooklyn got its first road win of the season, scoring 17 straight points late in the fourth quarter to extinguish the Suns comeback attempt. The Nets held a 102-100 lead with 4:16 to play when their decisive run began. It included Brook Lopezs 3-pointer with 1:47 to go to make it 113-100, and some tight defense on the Suns top scorers.Defense, it gives you that energy, that joy that you want. When you stop someone and you go down and score, its like `Woo! That was fun! Hollis-Jefferson said. We enjoy that whole process, the stop and the score.Trevor Booker added 19 points and eight rebounds, and Sean Kilpatrick had 19 points and nine boards for the Nets. Joe Harris also scored 19 points.T.J. Warren scored 18 points for the Suns. Jared Dudley added 17 off the bench. The Suns fell apart after Devin Bookers short jumper pulled them within two points with a little more than 4 minutes left and lost for the third time in four games.Phoenix shot a season-low 37.4 percent. The Suns 107 shot attempts were the highest in an NBA game this season, regulation or overtime. This is the first team that played the defense the way they played it, Suns coach Earl Watson said. They ... made us play out of the weak side, so they did a great job of taking away the paint, taking away the lane. The Suns took a lot of shots early in possessions. We just locked down defensively, Trevor Booker said. We shut down their transition and made them play half court.Harris two free throws gave Brooklyn its biggest leaad of the first half at 57-41 with 1:08 to go.dddddddddddd The Nets finished the half up 58-45 after leading by double digits for the last 5:19.TIP-INSNets: G Jeremy Lin remains out with a strained left hamstring. He watched Saturdays game from the bench and is expected to be re-evaluated this coming week. ... F Isaiah Whitehead missed his second straight game with a concussion and was not with the team Saturday.Suns: C Tyson Chandler remains away from the team due to a family matter and missed his third straight game. ... Rookie Tyler Ulis played 11 minutes, the most action hes seen since getting 18 on Halloween against the Los Angeles Clippers and the third game in which hes played this season.ANOTHER COACH, ANOTHER COMPLIMENTAdd the Nets Kenny Atkinson to the list of NBA coaches who have praised Bookers game. Im impressed with the confidence, the swagger he plays with and the attack mentality, Atkinson said.Booker, the teams leading scorer at 21.5 points per game coming in, made only 5 of 18 shots and finished with 11 points.CHRISS SHOTSSuns rookie Marquese Chriss got his third start and finished with a career-high 16 points. Chriss eclipsed his high of seven shot attempts before halftime, and took 15 in the game.LOUD FAN HEARS ITA vociferous fan sitting a few rows up from the court yelled at Watson to take Booker out of the game after a missed shot in the fourth quarter. The fan had been critical of the Suns all night, and Watson turned to him and calm but audibly said Shut up.BROOK BLOCKSNets center Brook Lopez set the season high for blocks for a Nets player with four, three of those in the first five minutes.UP NEXTNets: At the Clippers on Monday night, their first of two straight games against the Los Angeles teams in the Staples Center.Suns: At Golden State on Sunday night, their third set of back-to-back games of the season. ATLANTA -- Jason Heyward homered and drove in two runs to help the Atlanta Braves beat St. Louis 5-2 on Sunday night, capping their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals at home in 10 years. The Braves broke a 2-all tie with two runs in the sixth inning off rookie Shelby Miller (10-7) and two relievers. Pinch-hitter Joey Terdoslavich drove in Chris Johnson with the go-ahead run. Heyward added another run-scoring single. Heyward has nine homers this season, including two in the series between NL division leaders. Kris Medlen (7-10) allowed two runs on eight hits and a walk in six innings to snap his three-game losing streak. Miller allowed three runs, two earned, on six hits and two walks in 5 2-3 innings. The Braves finished their first three-game sweep of the Cardinals at Turner Field since April 22-24, 2003. Atlanta relievers Luis Avilan, Jordan Walden and Craig Kimbrel combined for three scoreless innings. Kimbrel pitched a perfect ninth to take the NL lead with his 31st save. The Cardinals, who lead the NL in batting average and runs, were held to three runs in the series. Johnson singled with two outs in the second, moved to third when the ball bounced past Carlos Beltran in right field for an error, and scored on a single by Andrelton Simmons. Heywards line-drive homer to the front row in right field pushed the lead to 2-0 in the third. Heyward hit leadoff for the second straight night. The Cardinals pulled even with two runs in the fifth. Back-to-back doubles by Pete Kozma and Miller produced the first run. With two outs, Beltran hit a fly ball to left field that fell between Evan Gattis and Simmons, who sprinted into the outfield from his shortstop position. Gattis, a natural catcher, was playing deep for the power-hitting Beltran and was slow to break on the ball. The Braves two-run sixth began with two outs. Johnson, who entered the night tied with Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina for the NL lead with a .332 batting average, singled for his second hit and moved to third on Simmons second single. Terdoslavich and Heyward followed with run-scoring hits. Johnson added his third hit, a double, off Fernando Salas in the eighth to push his average to .338. Johnson scored on an infield hit by Reed Johnson and a throwing error by Kozma from shortstop. Reed Johnson pulled up with an apparent injury after running to first and was replaced by pinch-runner Jose Constanza. The Braves made two strong defensive plays. Simmons went to his right, falling to his knees, to snag a grounder by David Freese before throwing to second to start a double play in the second. Freddie Freeman leaned over the railing in front of the Atlanta dugout to catch a foul popup by Matt Holliday to end the eighth. The event marked the second year that the two teams played a scrimmage that was closed to the media.Unlike Wisconsin, rebuilding is a priority for Central Arkansas. The Bears, members of the Southland Conference, posted a 7-21 overall record, an improvement from the 2014-15 season when Central Arkansas won just two games. Russ Pennell, a former Bears player, starts his third season at the coaching helm. The offense will run through Bears guard Jordan Howard, who averaged 20.2 points per game last season. Howard is joined by guard Derreck Brooks (12.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg) and Mathieu Kamba (10.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg).Pennell said he hopes to build depth and improvement on defense with more options off the bench, after four players redshirted last season. He said he likes the Bears competitiveness in practices. We can go different ways (with lineups) because most of our guys are multi-position, Pennell said. We can mix and match, and thats the thing I like. I just believe that we will be able to keep quality players on the floor the entire game. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Back when the first womens Olympic soccer tournament was held in 1996 at the Atlanta Games, they were players: Silvia Neid played for Germany and Pia Sundhage for Sweden.Twenty years later, they are coaches for their native countries, facing off in the gold-medal match at the Rio Olympics. Bound together by long careers in soccer, theyll momentarily put aside their friendly camaraderie Friday at Maracana Stadium. It will be Neids last match as coach of the German team. After the Olympics shes stepping down to take on a scouting role. The two met in the hallway at Maracana on Thursday before meeting with reporters. Neid said Sundhage asked what she was planning to do with her time, perhaps play golf? No, no, no, Neid said she replied. Im going to keep on watching womens football and see how I can get any trends about the way that you play.Competitors always. The two faced off last at the Womens World Cup in Canada last summer, with Germany coming out on top 4-1 in the opening match of the knockout round. Sweden defeated Germany in a friendly in early 2015, but otherwise Germany has dominated the meetings with eight straight victories in major competitive tournaments.I remember we played in 95 against each other and Sweden won, in Sweden. Thats a neat memory, Sundhage said. And shes been in football forever, same as me. ... Shes been very, very successful. It will be great to play her again and hopefully -- compared to the other results against German lately -- hopefully well get a result and Sweden will score one more goal than Germany.Neid played in 111 games for the German national team from 1982-96, scoring 48 goals. During her playing career, Germany won three UEFA championships and was runner up at the 1995 World Cup. Her last match as a player was at the Atlanta Games, against Brazil. She went on to be an assistant on Germans team that won the 2003 World Cup, then took over as coach of the senior women in 2005, leading the team to another World Cup title in 2007. She was named FIFA Womens Coach of the Year for 2010.Shes the kind of coach who can really improve players, said former German goalkeeper Nadine Angerer. Shes incredible as a coach. She sees weaknesses and she has solutions to make every single player better.Sundhage has had an equally illustrious career. She scored 71 goals in 146 appearances with Swedens national team from 1975-96.Sundhage won gold medals as a coach of the U.S. national team at both the Beijing and London Games. She led the Americans to the final match of the 2011 World Cup, but the team fell on penalties to Japan. She returned home to coach Sweden in 2013.Both teams have had a very different run through Brazil. Sweden defeated the favored Americans in the quarterfinals. The Swedes parked the bus in defense against the three-time defending Olympic champions, surviving 4-3 on a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in Brasilia.U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo stirred controversy after the match when she called Sweden a bunch of cowards for employing the tactic. But it clearly worked, so Sweden took much the same approach in the semifinals against Brazil, again advancing 4-3 on penalties following a scoreless draw against the hosts.Germany, ranked No. 2 in the world, avenged a loss to Canada earlier in the games, sending the Canadians to the bronze-medal match with a 2-0 victory. Both teams are playing in their first Olympic final. It is also the first all-European final since womens soccer became an Olympic sport in 1996.Germany has won the bronze medal three times, in Sydney, Athens and Beijing. Sweden has never been on the podium. The two teams have met three total times at the Olympics, and the Germans have won all three -- the most recent was a 2-0 victory in extra time in the quarterfinals at the 2008 Beijing Games. The Germans famously defeated Sweden 2-1 on a golden goal in the 98th minute to win the 2003 Womens World Cup, which was held in the United States because of the SARS outbreak in China.Sundhage, known for breaking into song at news conferences, was asked if she had a tune for the moment. She sounded a hopeful note for Sweden, singing The times they are a-changing.Neid laughed at a similar question: I cant sing. But I can dance. I need Pia to do the music. PHOENIX -- As Jake Lambs previously injured wrist has healed, hes heated up at the plate.Lamb and Phil Gosselin each hit two-run homers during a five-run fifth inning to help the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-3 on Sunday.Lamb said his wrist was affecting his swing as recently as last month when the team was on a road trip. He was rested against the Brewers in Milwaukee.Once I came back, it wasnt affecting my swing at all, Lamb said. Im just executing my approach. Looking for fastballs and hitting fastballs. You want to call it locked in, its locked in, but yeah, definitely feel good right now.Twelve of Lambs 24 home runs have tied the game or given the Diamondbacks a lead. He hit three home runs in the teams just-completed six-game homestand and went 9 for 26 overall.Lambs homer Sunday gave Arizona a 5-3 lead against starter Jimmy Nelson, and Gosselin delivered a pinch-hit homer off reliever Michael Blazek to make it 8-3. The Diamondbacks matched the single-inning club record for extra-base hits with five.Daniel Hudson (2-2) won by getting the final out in the fifth in relief of starter Archie Bradley.Nelson (6-11) allowed six earned runs and seven hits in 4 1/3 innings. He struck out four, walked three, hit two batters and threw a wild pitch.Hes not where he we wants to be or where we want him to be. Things are snowballing a little bit, Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. We have to get more quality pitches. Every pitcher goes through this, there is going to be stuff that goes on and you have to move on to the next pitch. Thats the game. Jimmys preparation is second to none. The Brewers took a 1-0 lead after Jonathan Villar led off the game with a walk, stole second and later scored on a wild pitch.Villar added another stolen base in the fifth for his 43rd this season, tying him with Billy Hamilton for the major league lead.Ryan Braun thwarted the Diamondbacks first-inning attempt to tie it when he threw out speedy Michael Bourn from left field to home plate on Lambs single. The tag play was close but not reviewed, and it ended the inning.Villar made it 2-0 with his ninth home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field in the third inning. The Brewers made several miscues in the fourth and lost the lead. The Diamondbacks loaded the bases with no outs against Nelson, who hit back-to-back batters after issuing a leadoff walk. Villar then tumbled into the home dugout to catch Tuffy Gosewichs foul pop, allowing Yasmany Tomas to score from third base.Bradleys bunt was fielded by first baseman Andy Wilkins, who threw too high to home for an error. Then Jean Segura reached on Nelsons wild throw to first base, allowing Owings to score and giving the Diamondbacks a 3-2 lead.Bradley couldnt make it out of the fifth despite striking out the first two hitters. Villar walked, stole second and took third on Gosewichs throwing error on the steal and scored on Orlando Arcias single. That tied it at 3.Nelson gave up four of the Diamondbacks runs in the fifth, including Owings RBI triple.COLLMENTER RELEASEDThe Diamondbacks announced the unconditional release of veteran right-hander Josh Collmenter. Hed been designated for assignment on July 30. Collmenter spent five-plus seasons with Arizona, the team that drafted him in 2007, and was used a starter and reliever. He was the opening day starter in 2015. The club tweeted a thank you to Collmenter before Sundays game.ICHIRO-VATIONDuring a break in the top of the eighth inning for some mound maintenance, the video highlight of Ichiro Suzukis 3,000th hit was played on the scoreboard at Chase Field. Fans reacted with applause.TRAINERS ROOMBrewers: RHP David Goforth was optioned to Triple-A Colorado Springs after the game.Diamondbacks: OF David Peralta went on the 15-day disabled list for the third time this season, the second time for a wrist injury. OF Socrates Brito was called up from Triple-A Reno in a corresponding move. ... Arizona sent reliever Evan Marshall to Reno to make room for Zack Greinkes return to the rotation from the disabled list Tuesday. Zack Godley will pitch out of the bullpen for the near future.UP NEXTBrewers: RHP Zach Davies is scheduled for his 20th start of the season when he faces the Atlanta Braves on Monday in Milwaukee. Davies (9-4) is 9-1 in 16 starts with a 2.86 ERA since starting the season 0-3.Diamondbacks: After a day off Monday, the Diamondbacks welcome ace Greinke (10-3, 3.62 ERA) back into the rotation Tuesday at the New York Mets. Greinke will come of the 15-day disabled list after more than a month dealing with a left oblique strain. Geelong coach Chris Scott says his team doesnt deserve to be classified as top-four material, but he hopes that will change by the end of the home-and-away season. The Cats snapped their two-match losing run with an unconvincing 17-point AFL win over the Dockers in Perth on Friday night.Brownlow medal favourite Patrick Dangerfield was crucial in the 11.12 (78) to 9.7 (61) triumph, with his 31-disposal, four-goal effort helping the Cats get over the line.Geelongs best football has been irresistible this season. But their knack of playing poorly against lesser sides has cost them dearly, with the Cats losing to Carlton, Collingwood, and St Kilda.Scott conceded his team were poor and average early against the Dockers, but he also sees plenty of upside.Geelongs top-four hopes will go on the line over the next fortnight when they host fellow flag fancies Adelaide and the Bulldogs at Simonds Stadium. The Cats then round out their season against lowly Essendon, Richmond, Brisbane, and Melbourne in what shapes as a dream lead-in to the finals.Scott said his teams priority at the minute was rediscovering its best football, rather than aiming for a particular spot on the ladder.Weve shown that we have no right to consider ourselves a top-four team this year because were too inconsistent, Scott said.So if we can find the consistency and improve our game, even if we finish 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th, well be hard to beat.Where are we? I just think were in the race.We have a tough couple of weeks coming up which will help sort it out.Geelong utility Lachie Henderson is in doubt for next Saturdays clash with Adelaide after being knocked unconscious in a heavy collision with Fremantles Chris Mayne.Sometimes it can look horrible and recover quickly, and sometimes it is innocuous, you seem fine and three days later you are still struggling, Scott said.We will just have to be patient on that one.Dangerfield copped a knock to his knee early, and he hurt his shoulder late in the match. But the star midfielder played out the match, and should be fine to take on his former side.Dangerfields four goals against the Dockers was crucial in a game where Geelongs stuttering attack struggled to fire.Scott said it was an interesting debate about whether he should play Dangerfield up forward more often. We talk about it all the time, Scott said.If our midfield is getting beaten it is a pretty bold move to take him out of it and put him forward. So it is always a calculated risk. I think he is a very tough match-up forward, but you have to get the ball to him as well. Umberger scored twice to lead the Blue Jackets to a franchise-record for consecutive wins with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night over the Los Angeles Kings. It was supposed to be an easy week, and for the most of the Top 25 it was, but whether is defeat or close victory, several teams looked really shaky against inferior competition. Take a look at how it all shook out in our Power Rankings.?Power Rankings voters: Edward Aschoff, Butch Davis, Heather Dinich, Brad Edwards, Chris Fallica, Rod Gilmore, Danny Kanell, Chris Low, Ivan Maisel, Ryan McGee, Brett McMurphy, Adam Rittenberg, Mark SchlabachPrevious rankings: Week 1?1. Alabama Crimson Tide (2-0)Trending:Week 1 ranking: 1 Week 2 result: Defeated Western Kentucky 38-10Like an inexorable force of nature, Alabama casually rolled over Western Kentucky, setting up a key SEC West showdown with Ole Miss. While the Rebels are on their heels after losing their opener to Florida State, they own something that almost seems miraculous: a winning streak against Nick Saban. Ole Miss has won the last two games in this series, which officially makes the Rebels the Crimson Tides nemesis.2. Florida State Seminoles (2-0)Trending:Week 1 ranking: 2 Week 2 result: Defeated Charleston Southern 52-8After having little trouble with Charleston Southern, the Seminoles turn their attention to Louisville and the Lamar Jackson Show. Or will that be the Deondre Francois Show, counters FSU? This ACC clash features two impressive young gunslingers vying to push their teams to the top of the ACC -- at least until they meet Clemson.3.?Ohio State Buckeyes?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:??4 Week 2 result:?Defeated Tulsa 48-3The Buckeyes started slowly but ultimately dominated Tulsa in a 48-3 victory, with the defense playing lead and the offense catching up with a rugged running game. J.T. Barrett and the passing attack? Well, well see -- and soon -- as Ohio State heads to Oklahoma on Saturday for a critical matchup between teams with CFP aspirations.4.?Houston Cougars?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?5 Week 2 result:?Defeated Lamar 42-0No?Greg Ward Jr.? No problem. Houston crushed Lamar by running the ball against an overmatched foe, but the bigger issue is whether Ward will be 100 percent at Cincinnati on Thursday with a short week of preparation. Ward?sat out with an injury to his right throwing shoulder. While the school reported no structural damage, the question remains whether this could be a nagging issue on a week-to-week basis, affecting Ward as both a passer and runner.5. Clemson Tigers (2-0)Trending:Week 1 ranking: ?3 Week 2 result: Defeated Troy 30-24While Clemsons 30-24 win over Troy wasnt pretty, it was a win and survival is the name of the game in this already slightly nutty season. Is the offense a concern? Perhaps. A matchup with South Carolina State should provide another chance for Deshaun Watson & Co. to iron out some persistent wrinkles before the ACC slate starts at Georgia Tech on Sept. 22, a Thursday night showdown in Atlanta.6.?Michigan Wolverines?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?6 Week 2 result:?Defeated UCF 51-14After mowing over Central Florida, the Wolverines might face their first challenge of the season during a visit from a seemingly improved, 2-0 Colorado squad. Michigan was churning on both sides of the ball against the Knights, with new starting QB Wilton Speight turning in a highly efficient performance.7.?Stanford Cardinal?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?7 Week 2 result:?Did not playThe Cardinal enjoyed a bye after taking down Kansas State in Week 1, but a visit from USC at the very least should be interesting as the Trojans should be highly motivated to rehabilitate their national image after getting trounced by Alabama in Week 1. While the Cardinal beat the Trojans twice last year -- in the regular season and Pac-12 championship game -- USC won the previous two meetings.8.?Washington Huskies?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?8 Week 2 result:?Defeated Idaho 59-14The Huskies continued their jaunt through a pillow-soft nonconference schedule with a blowout of hapless Idaho. While the Huskies have taken care of business like a top-10 team playing weak foes, we wont know much about them until they open the Pac-12 slate at Arizona and thereafter play Stanford and Oregon back-to-back. Up next? Portland State, an FCS team.9.?Wisconsin Badgers?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?10 Week 2 result:?Defeated Akron 54-10The Badgers didnt let up after their red-letter win over LSU, whipping Akron 54-10, rolling up 586 yards on offense and holding the Zips to just 10 first downs. Wisconsin plays host to Georgia State next weekend and then gets Big Ten play rolling on Sept. 24 at Michigan State, a potential separation game in the conference pecking order.10.?Louisville Cardinals?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?12 Week 2 result:?Defeated Syracuse 62-28Cardinals quarterback Lamar Jackson announced himself as a Heisman Trophy candidate with five touchdowns -- four rushing -- and an ACC record 610 total yards in a 62-28 win over Syracuse. He can push his candidacy to another level if he can beat No. 3 Florida State and transform the preseason ACC and CFP picture.11.?Texas Longhorns?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?11 Week 2 result:?Defeated UTEP 41-7The Charlie Strong renaissance continued with the Longhorns whipping UTEP 41-7, a four-quarter domination. Despite a number of O-linemen sitting out due to injury, freshman QB Shane Buechele completed 22 of 27 for 244 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions and he rushed for 34 yards for good measure. Up next is an interesting matchup at California.12.?Tennessee Volunteers?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?19 Week 2 result:?Defeated Virginia Tech 45-24Tennessee was down 14-0 to Virginia Tech in the first quarter, and you could already see the sports writers lining up for the 2016s Biggest Bust stories. Then ... poof! The Vols found their mojo and looked like the SEC East favorite they are supposed to be, rolling up 31 unanswered points before the Hokies managed to answer with a field goal. The Vols now host Ohio before beginning their SEC gantlet: Florida, Georgia, Texas A&M and Alabama.dddddddddddd13.?Michigan State Spartans?(1-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?13 Week 2 result:?Did not playThe Spartans took the week off in advance of their trip to Notre Dame, the first test of the season for new starting QB Tyler OConnor. The Spartans won three straight over the Fighting Irish from 2011-13.14.?Texas A&M Aggies?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?15 Week 2 result:?Defeated Prairie View 67-0Aggies QB Trevor Knight piled up some nice numbers passing and running against Prairie View, but can he do the same at Auburn, which mostly corralled Clemson QB Deshaun Watson? The Aggies can make an early SEC West statement and perhaps further embolden the gathering calls for Tigers coach Gus Malzahns job.15.?Oklahoma Sooners?(1-1)Trending:?Week 1 ranking: ?17 Week 2 result:?Defeated Louisiana Monroe 59-17The Sooners blasted Louisiana Monroe, perhaps ridding themselves of the residual bad taste of the opening loss to Houston. If there is any remaining -- and there probably is just a bit -- they can thoroughly cleanse it by figuring out a way to beat Ohio State on Saturday. A marquee win like that would certainly put Oklahoma back into the CFP contender track.16.?Notre Dame Fighting Irish?(1-1)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?16 Week 2 result:?Defeated Nevada 39-10The Fighting Irish stomped Nevada 39-10, showing no signs of a hangover after losing a heartbreaker to Texas in Week 1. On the downside, cornerback Shaun Crawford suffered an Achilles injury that will sideline him for the season, and the Irish secondary already has injury and suspension issues. Up next is a visit from Michigan State, a game that can put the Irish back on the CFP map. Or knock them out for good.17.?Iowa Hawkeyes?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?18 Week 2 result:?Defeated Iowa State 42-3The Hawkeyes, whove been all over the place in their rivalry with Iowa State, dominated the Cyclones from bell-to-bell, with QB C.J. Beathard particularly efficient. When you look at Iowas schedule, its difficult to believe the Hawkeyes wont reach an Oct. 22 date with Wisconsin at 7-0.18.?Georgia Bulldogs?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?9 Week 2 result:?Defeated Nicholls 26-24Good golly, Mr. Smart, what the heck was going on against Nicholls? Oh, well, a win is a win -- we guess -- even if its just 26-24 against a 55-point underdog. Obviously, touted true freshman QB Jacob Eason isnt going to provide immediate magic to the offense. A visit to Missouri didnt seem very daunting a week ago, but the Bulldogs apparently cant take anyone lightly.19. Ole Miss Rebels (1-1)Trending:Week 1 ranking: ?14 Week 2 result: Defeated Wofford 38-13While Ole Miss win over Wofford wasnt artful, it did help put some distance between the Rebels and a tough opening loss to Florida State. And all those frowns in Oxford will turn upside down if Ole Miss can win a third straight over Alabama, the nations defending national champion and current No. 1 team.20.?LSU Tigers?(1-1)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?22 Week 2 result:?Defeated Jacksonville State 34-13While LSUs 34-13 win over Jacksonville State was far from pretty -- and didnt include an injured Leonard Fournette -- it appears that the Tigers have found a quarterback, as Danny Etling, a Purdue transfer, came on for the ineffective Brandon Harris and led the Tigers to all their points. Of course, Jacksonville State is one thing. A visit from Mississippi State is another.21.?Oregon Ducks?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?25 Week 2 result:?Defeated Virginia 44-26Oregon owned a struggling Virginia squad, with the offense looking flashy and the defense looking ... well, better. Well get a much more substantive measure of whether Oregon is a legit Pac-12 North Division contender again after a trip to Nebraska on Saturday. The Cornhuskers sideline will look familiar with former Oregon State coach Mike Riley leading Big Red.22.?Baylor Bears?(2-0)Trending:?Week 1 ranking:?23 Week 2 result:?Defeated SMU 40-13Baylor didnt look like itself in the first half against SMU -- it failed to score a TD before the break for only the fourth time in its past 57 games -- but it surged in the third quarter and coasted home. The Bears annual preseason of cupcakes when the rest of college football is playing tough nonconference games continues next Friday at Rice.23. Arkansas Razorbacks (2-0)Trending:Week 1 ranking: NR Week 2 result: Defeated TCU 41-38 (2OT)The Razorbacks looked much better in Week 2, showing good offensive balance in their double-overtime win at No. 15 TCU. More than that, they showed some mental toughness by overcoming the Horned Frogs fourth-quarter comeback to prevail in OT. After a visit from Texas State, a more dangerous Texas team comes to town -- Texas A&M -- in a potentially significant SEC West showdown.24. Florida Gators (2-0)Trending:Week 1 ranking: NR Week 2 result: Defeated Kentucky 45-7The Gators blasted woeful Kentucky and looked good on both sides of the ball while doing so, owning a 564-149 yardage advantage in a 45-7 domination. Of course, Floridas early season is littered with patsies, including a visit from North Texas on Saturday, so we wont get a true measure of the Gators until they visit Tennessee on Sept. 24.25. UCLA Bruins (1-1)Trending:Week 1 ranking:?24 Week 2 result: Defeated UNLV 42-21UCLA started quick, meandered and then pulled away from UNLV in a 42-21 victory, but the bigger issue may be the health of defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes, by far the Bruins best defensive player. He didnt play in the second half with what was called a strained right knee. Vanderdoes missed all of the 2015 season after he blew out his left knee. The Bruins visit BYU on Saturday.Others receiving votes: North Carolina, Miami, Boise State, San Diego State, Oklahoma State, Nebraska, Utah, TCU, Colorado, Appalachian State, Arizona State? SAN DIEGO -- Chargers defensive end Joey Bosa didnt participate in practice Wednesday because of what appears to be an injury to his left leg.San Diego faces the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday and all indications are that Bosa, the No. 3 overall pick in this years draft, wont play.Only time will tell because Im not going to tell you, coach Mike McCoy said. When asked if Bosa was a candidate for injured reserve, McCoy said: No, its not an IR deal.Bosa missed the preseason during a 31-day holdout because of a contract dispute. He signed on Aug. 29, took part in a light practice the following day and worked briefly before the Chargers exhibition game against the 49ers on Thursday. He was unavailable for Mondays practice, instead watching it with his left leg wrapped.Since Bosa has a roster exemption which expires after Sundays game, the Chargers arent required to reveal Bosas health status.Bosa, a former Ohio State star, has yet to work in pads with the Chargers.Hell catch up, defensive tackle Brandon Mebane said. Its a long season and he has time to do that.Mebane said Bosa has been attentive during team meetings.Hes a good guy, Mebane said. Authentic Harrison Phillips Jersey .com) - Manchester City midfielder David Silva is expected to miss the next four weeks because of a calf problem. With a slap single off Blue Jays starter R.A. Dickey, Ichiro Suzuki joined one of baseballs most exclusive groups: the 4,000 hit club. Ichiro joined only Pete Rose (4,256) and Ty Cobb (4,189) as the only men in the history of professional baseball to reach the plateau, reaching the milestone in his 2,981st professional game. TSN.ca Baseball Editor Shane McNeil presents five reasons why Ichiros achievement deserves the recognition it has received. 1. Its the numbers that matter, not the details. While some might argue an asterisk for those Ichiro accrued in the Japanese Professional League, those arguments must also be tempered by a couple facts. Ichiro has registered more hits in Major League Baseball than any player in the first 13 years of his MLB career (2,722), eclipsing Paul Waners 2,648. The fact that he did not start his MLB career cannot and should not be held against him, since he was born and trained in Japan and naturally started his career. Ichiro has more hits from the age of 27 onward than the two men ahead of him which makes this achievement all the more astounding. Most players best years are prior to their 30th birthday. Ichiro did the majority of his work as a pro after that milestone. Moreover, Ichiro was actually registering fewer at-bats per season in Japan than he would have in North America. His highest single-season AB total with Orix was his 546 in 1994. His lowest single-season total with Seattle was 647 in 2002. While Ichiros Japanese averages were substantially higher than most of his MLB single-season totals (a .353 career mark vs. .320 in MLB), the greater number of at-bats means that had Ichiro been even a .300 hitter in the MLB he would have registered 200 hits per season, as opposed to the 180 or so he averaged in Japan. Call the Nippon Professional Baseball League inferior all you like, it only masks the reality that had Ichiro started in North America in 1995 – three years after his Japanese career began – he would still be at 4,000 today, health permitting. 2. Baseball needs something to be proud of. Whenever the “Steroid Era” is mentioned in connection to baseball, a few faces spring to mind. Perhaps its Barry Bonds or Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa. Perhaps its Jose Canseco or a younger Alex Rodriguez with the Texas Rangers. Maybe its Ryan Braun. The steroid problem in the Majors did not end with the Mitchell Report, nor is it likely to end with Biogenesis. However, what the Steroid Era has achieved is calling into question virtually every major landmark and achievement over the past 25 or so years, give or take a Cal Ripken. With Ichiros 4,000th hit – many of which never even left the infield – baseball has something to be proud of and its primarily based around one of the most elementary skills: Legging one out to first. 3. It allows MLB to celebrate one of its underappreciated greats. Ichiro has never been a spotlight hog, nor has he been a particularly flashy player. A wise man once wrote, “This... iis a simple game.dddddddddddd You throw the ball. You hit the ball. You catch the ball.” Ichiro did all three better than just about any player of his generation. While his 110 home runs wont win him any MVP votes, he managed a decade of achievement that is almost unparalleled in the most basic of baseball skills. Between 2001 and 2010, Ichiro never finished lower than seventh in the American League batting race, hitting .310 or better every single season. Over that same span he finished in the top 10 in stolen bases every season, winning 10 Gold Gloves over that span and was selected to 10 All-Star Games. Ichiro has played baseball in its purest sense better than the majority of his opposition as a Major Leaguer and – apart from his rookie season – drew surprisingly little attention to himself in the process. If he plays another two or three seasons in North America, there may well be a celebration for his passage of Rose and Cobb on the hit list. But he may not, so why not take the opportunity to celebrate the man and his achievement? 4. Its rare nowadays to see a true trailblazer at work. Ichiro was not the first Japanese player to hit North America, nor will he be the last. That said, he will undoubtedly be the first to be elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame and will likely do so on the first ballot. Ichiro was not faced with the obstacles of being the first, like Jackie Robinson, but he is the first Japanese player and certainly the first Japanese hitter to have such a career. It is time to start thinking of Ichiro in the same vein as Roberto Clemente, his humanitarianism and martyrdom notwithstanding? Clemente was not the first Latin American ballplayer to hit MLB, but he was the first to become a true force in the game and has since carried the flag for the majority of the subsequent ballplayers to flood the Majors from the Caribbean. Will Ichiro open a similar floodgate for Japanese and Asian players to gain better prominence in MLB? Maybe not to the same extent as the close Caribbean cultures, but its not a stretch to think that Yu Darvish has Ichiro to thank at least in part for his current success and celebrity. 5. He may not be done yet. Ichiro may well be in his final act in the Majors, but there is no way to know for certain. A quiet man by nature, Ichiro has made no allusions toward retirement any time soon, nor has he hinted about a possible return to Japan. At 39, Ichiro is two years younger than Cobb was at the time of his retirement and a full six years younger than Rose in his final season as a player. Its not out of the realm of possibility to play two more seasons and should he do so he still has both men to pass, as well as the incredible milestone of possibly reaching 3,000 hits in the majors – an asterisk-less achievement if ever there was one. He is also still yet to play a World Series game, so a competitor of his stature could also be holding out to win a Championship before calling it a career. Either way, the man still has plenty to play for. We want to make the most of what we have right now.Geitz, one of only three players to have featured in Queenslands two trans-Tasman title wins to date, said on Thursday she is undecided on her future and that the result of Sundays decider against the NSW Swifts could sway her.Im still open to playing on but I havent made any firm decisions, she wrote in a column for News Corp.Ill wait and see what Sunday brings and that might determine what happens. The Firebirds can finish the trans-Tasman era as the competitions most successful franchise if they can claim their third title on Sunday. The Adelaide Thunderbirds and Melbourne Vixens are the only other teams to have won two grand finals. Were approaching this game like any other game - but these things are on our mind, Simpson said.We really would like to be able to step up and make history, like any team would.Weve got a lot of things motivating us but I guess thats just an extra one. World No. 1 Jason Days place in the lucrative season-ending Tour Championship is in doubt after he withdrew with a back injury from the BMW Championship won by Dustin Johnson.Day tweaked his lower back when he bent down to put a tee in the ground on the ninth hole and decided to pull out of the event rather than risk further damage.Already well back off the lead, he now has a serious challenger for his place at the top of the world rankings as world No.2 Johnson powered home to win at Crooked Stick Golf Club by three shots.Johnson shot a final round five-under 67 to surge to 23 under for the tournament, winning for the third time this year to go with his US Open and WGC Bridgestone Invitational triumph.Englands Paul Casey finished runner-up for the second week running, closing with a 67 of his own to be 20 under, with American Roberto Castro (67) playing his way into the season finale by finishing third at 17 under. The results puts the American closer to Day in the world rankings ahead of the season ending Tour Championship, and sends him to the top of the season long FedExCup points list.Defending event champion Day has a history of back issues, withdrawing from the BMW Championship in 2014 with a similar complaint. He also battled a bad back at the 2015 Barclays and 2016 World Golf Championships Match Play with the same issue before fighting through the pain and winning. His place in Atlanta in two weeks is now in doubt where the winner of the season long FedExCup will claim a $US10million bonus.Hes all right, hes just got some back iissues and is in a little bit of pain.dddddddddddd Hes getting treatment right now. I dont think its anything that he hasnt dealt with before, Days manager Bud Martin said. The trainer is maybe thinking its the same type of thing that he dealt with I think at the Barclays and last year where he picked something up in his bus and it kind of got out of line. But just better safe than sorry. Instead of forcing it, we just decided that it was more prudent to kind of come in, get it worked on, and deal with it.Day dropped from second to fourth in the FedExCup standings which is of minimal consequence as those in the top five can guarantee the FedExCup with a win in the TOUR Championship.Well probably get a MRI just to double check. My gut is that hell be fine, Martin said.Hopefully, hell be ready for Atlanta, but the most important thing is the next 15 years, not the next 15 days.Meanwhile Adam Scott finished fourth for the third straight playoff event.A final round 71 left him 12 under, 11 shots off the win. He is now third in the season-long points list, giving him a chance to win it all in two weeks time.Hopefully Im saving my best for last, that would be a great way to finish the year, Scott said. And starting in third, that would mean I would win the FedExCup. So thats an exciting spot for me to be in and hopefully I can take advantage of it.Marc Leishman (-1) and Aaron Baddeley (+4) have ended their seasons. DENVER -- Brock Osweiler took one last dig at Denvers fans after Houstons 27-9 loss to the Broncos. He figured they would be a little bit louder with the boos.Denvers defenders ruined Osweilers homecoming by hurrying, hitting and harassing their ex-quarterback Monday night, even if his ears werent ringing from the crowd noise.Osweiler famously declared upon signing his $72 million, four-year deal that he chose Houston over Denver because the Texans gave him the better chance to succeed. Its not all about money in life, said Broncos cornerback Chris Harris Jr., who recovered one of Osweilers three fumbles. He had a great situation, great team here, better receivers to me. So, I think he already knows he made the wrong choice. Not so, said Osweiler.I never live my life looking in the rearview mirror, Osweiler said after a night in which his head was on a constant swivel with the likes of Von Miller, Shane Ray and Derek Wolfe coming after him.Coach Gary Kubiak returned to the sideline following his second health scare in three years, and he liked what he saw as the Broncos (5-2) snapped a two-game skid in sending Osweiler and the rest of the overwhelmed Texans home at 4-3.C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker energized Denvers sputtering ground game, both running for a touchdown. Anderson gained 107 yards on 16 carries and Booker had 83 on 17 hand-offs.But the big story was Trevor Siemian, Peyton Mannings surprise successor, outplaying Osweiler, who was groomed to be Denvers next QB for the last four years.Osweiler left for bigger numbers in Texas -- both in his bank account and his stat sheet -- but he spent the whole game quickly getting rid of the ball, constantly overthrowing DeAndre Hopkins in double coverage and otherwise running for his life from Miller & Co.Miller wore a REVENGE hoodie to his postgame interview, but he said it was a shoutout to Drake, who wore Millers No. 58 jersey at a recent concert in Colorado.Me and Brock, were good. I love the guy. I wish him the best, Miller said.Osweiler was just 22 for 41 for 131 yards with no TDs and no interceptions. Siemian was 14 of 25 for 157 yards, a TD and no interceptions.Osweiler also lost a fumble at his own 25-yard line. It was scooped up by Harris on the first play of the fourth quarter and led to Brandon McManus chip-shot field goal that made it 24-9.Of the dozen passes thrown his way, Hopkins caught just five of them, coveering 36 yards, and no other Texan gained more.dddddddddddd And Houston was limited to Nick Novaks field goals from 43, 43 and 39 yards.Anderson scored on a 7-yard run and Siemian hit Demaryius Thomas from 4 yards out as the Broncos took a 14-6 halftime lead.Novaks 29-yarder made it 14-9, but Darian Stewart punched the ball from running back Alfred Blues grasp and linebacker Todd Davis plucked it out of the air . That led to Bookers 1-yard TD run .Kubiak, who suffered a mini-stroke while coaching the Texans in 2013, missed Denvers last game after suffering a complex migraine, which can mimic a stroke.Like Osweiler, this was his first game against his former team, and cornerback Aqib Talib gave him a game ball afterward.Coaches get game balls when players play good, I can tell you that, Kubiak said.Osweiler, who skipped out on the Broncos White House trip and ring ceremony, embraced Siemian, Kubiak and several other Broncos after the game.It was really great to see some familiar faces and give those guys a hug, he said.STREAK BREAKER: Denvers dazzling defense is a real dawdler , having allowed scores on five of six opening drives coming into the game. That didnt stop them from deferring when they won the toss. The Texans went three and out on their first two possessions. It was a big emphasis for us, Miller said.OH NO, OKUNG: Broncos left tackle Russell Okung cleared concussion protocol to make the start. But he was rusty a week after his pair of penalties resulted in a nullified touchdown and a safety in a 21-13 loss at San Diego. This time, he was whistled for a pair of holds that negated a nifty first-down run by Booker and a 28-yard grab by Thomas.INJURIES : Texans right tackle Derek Newton was carted off the field with what looked like serious injuries to both knees in the first half. He crumpled to the grass while blocking Miller. Newton was dropping back to pass block midway through the first quarter when his left knee buckled first and then his right knee gave way. COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Trevor Knight had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second overtime and No. 8 Texas A&M withstood another late Tennessee rally to beat the No. 9 Volunteers 45-38 on Saturday. After Knight bulled in for the touchdown, Armani Watts intercepted Joshua Dobbs pass on the next play for Tennessees seventh turnover to end the game. The big takeaway from this was we were able to withstand some things, not play great but make enough plays to win the game without some of our better players being 100 percent, coach Kevin Sumlin said. The teams exchanged field goals in the first overtime.Knight threw for 239 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 110 yards and three more scores. The Volunteers (5-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) had rallied from double-digit deficits to win four of their last five games, including last weeks last-play victory over Georgia. They trailed by 21 points in the third quarter Saturday thanks to six turnovers before tying it on Alvin Kamaras 18-yard touchdown reception with 41 seconds left.Proud of the resolve, but the turnovers didnt give us an opportunity, Tennessee coach Butch Jones said.Texas A&M (6-0, 4-0) had a chance to win it in regulation, but Daniel LaCameras 38-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left. The Aggies could have put this one away with less than 2 minutes remaining, but freshman Trayveon Williams had the ball knocked from his hands and out of the back of the end zone just before he crossed the goal line on a 71-yard run.Texas A&M was facing third-and-2 when Knight dashed 62 yards for a touchdown that pushed the lead to 35-21 with about three minutes left. Kamaras 4-yard run about a minute later made it a one-score game. The Aggies built a 21-7 lead in the first quarter after three fumbles by Tennessee. Knight threw touchdown passes of 13 and 2 yards and had a 7-yard TD run in the opening frame.Saturday continued a trend of bad starts for the Volunteers, who have been outscored 62-17 in the first quarter this season.THE TAKEAWAYTENNESSEE: The Volunteers finally learned that they cant give good teams such a big cushion and expect to come back again and again. Theyll have to find a way to get off to a better start and cure their turnover woes if they expect to compete with No. 1 Alabama next week.TEXAS A&M: Texas A&Ms defense again showed it is the strength of this team by forcing the flurry of turnovers and pressuring Dobbs all day long. The offense needs to be more consistent for the Aggies to have a chance to topple Alabama in two weeks.UP NEXTTENNESSEE: The Volunteers host Alabama next Saturday.TEXAS A&M: Texas A&M has a week off before traveling to face the top-ranked Crimson Tide on Oct. 22.---APs college football website: www.collegefootball.ap.org Authentic Justin Verlander Jersey . Each week, TSN Baseball Analyst Steve Phillips breaks down all the big stories and issues around Major League Baseball on TSN.ca. In this edition, he explains the post-trade deadline waiver process and how it applies to Torontos Mark DeRosa and addresses Major League Baseballs credibility issues. 1) The Toronto Blue Jays apparently put Mark DeRosa on waivers and he was claimed. The Jays then pulled him back, perhaps to work out a deal. Can you explain this post-deadline waiver process and how GMs work this into trades? Is there much concern about upsetting players whom you might end up keeping (or the team in general) with this relatively public process? Theres much confusion around Major League Baseballs July 31 trade deadline. Its not really a deadline after all, as players can still be traded after July 31 but have to be put through the waiver process first. The reason this process is in place is to give teams with a lesser record a better chance to improve themselves than teams with a better record. It aims to level the playing field over the last couple of months of the season. It also prohibits a team from making a secret pact with another to help it win. Waivers. The word itself evokes a rapid heartbeat and beads of sweat on my forehead. As a young executive in baseball I would hear others talk about waivers and I would wonder what the heck they were. Once when I was broadcasting a game on national television, a 12-year-old kid asked a question on the air about waivers and how players get traded this time of year. I bravely started to answer and as I talked over about five pitches I looked at my colleagues in the broadcast booth and they had the most bewildered look on their face. They had no clue what I was saying (neither did the 12 year-old kid) and needless to say, neither did I. Lets give this a shot. There are three different types of waivers: outright waivers, release waivers and Major League waivers. In order to be traded after the July 31 deadline, players must be placed on Major League Waivers. Major League waivers are revocable, meaning if a player gets claimed and a team decides they dont want to trade him they can pull him back and he will remain with his original team. So here is what you need to know: Players can be traded two ways: i) If a player is not claimed by anyone on waivers his team is free to trade him to any suitor or; ii) If a team is awarded a waiver claim on a player that team has 48 hours to make a trade with the players original team. If no deal is made within the 48 hours the original team has the right to pull the player back off waivers at which point he stays with his original team. Lets see if I can better explain waivers by creating an image for you: Picture all 30 general managers seated around a runway. You know - the kind that models walk up and down during fashion shows. The AL executives are seated on one side of the runway, while the NL execs are on the other side. Those teams with the worst records are seated closest to the area where the players enter the runway, while those with the best records are seated the furthest away. Seated behind the general managers are their scouts and executive assistants with computers. Each day, clubs can place up to seven players on waivers (They dont have to send any if they prefer not to do so). So in effect, they send them down the runway. The AL players walk in front of the AL teams first and then its the NL teams, vice versa for NL players. As the players walk down the proverbial runway, the general managers study them from top to bottom. They discuss what they see with their staff. They evaluate their stats and their contracts and decide whether they have interest in them. Players are on waivers for two days so they just keep walking around the runway for that period of time while being gawked at by front office executives who are deciding whether to make a waiver claim. Waiver claims are submitted by general managers during this baseball fashion show for two reasons: i) To acquire a player - If a club really wants a player then they are best served to claim the player on waivers. One has to assume that interest in a player is likely shared by other teams as well. Hoping that a player clears waivers completely without getting claimed by anyone is risky because it may mean that a club will lose out on the player they want. ii) To block someone else from getting a player - If a team knows that a club they are chasing in the standings wants to trade for a certain player then they may make a claim to keep that deal from happening. Remember, teams that have lesser records get awarded the claim. These sorts of waiver claims that are made with the intention of blocking can be dangerous. They are especially dangerous if the claim is made on a player with a significant salary. Sometimes, clubs get stuck with a contract they dont really want when they were just trying to block. At the end of two-day waiver period, imagine that all of the players go out to the runway for a final viewing. Each player has either gone unclaimed, claimed by one team or claimed by multiple teams. The players that went unclaimed are free to leave the runway and can now be traded to any team for the remainder of the season. Players claimed by one team must stand on the runway for another couple of days. During that time, his current general manager and the claiming general manager discuss possible trade scenarios. Ultimately, his current club can do one of the following: i) Make a trade with the claiming team. ii) Reject the waiver claim and pull the player back keeping the player on its major league roster. iii) Let the claiming team have the player without getting anything in return. Players claimed by multiple teams when walking the runway must hang around for a couple of days as well. The pecking order for awarding the claim is that the club with the worst record in a players league gets awarded the claim. If no team in his own league claims a player, then the club with the worst record in the other league is awarded the claim. Once the claimant is determined then one of the three outcomes mentioned above can occur. Blue Jays utility man Mark DeRosa has been rumoured to have been claimed by the Atlanta Braves on waivers. If thats accurate, then no AL team put a claim on DeRosa and no one other than the Braves (second best NL record) or possibly the Pirates (best record in NL). This meant that the Braves and Jays had a 48-hour window to try and work out a deal. It seems that they were unable to make a deal and the Jays pulled DeRosa back off of waivers. They revoked their waivers. This means that DeRosa cant be traded during this waiver period. Almost every player in the major leagues will be placed on waivers and walk down the runway whether his team has interest in trading him or not. Even though the process is supposed to be confidential there always seem to be rumors about which players were claimed by which teams. I always told players not to worry about rumors during this time of year as I put every player through waivers as a practice even if I had no interest in trading them. It allowed me to gauge the interest from other teams in my players for possible trade discussions in the off-season. See that wasnt so painful was it? 2. Which players currently not with the big club are most likely to help the jays in 2014? Hutchison? Drabek? Romero? Are there any youngsters in the system ready to step in and make an impact? Generally speaking, I believe prospects get general managers fired. For every top prospect that has fulfilled his potential, there are dozens that never lived up to expectations. I never consider a rookie or young player to be the answer to a need going into the season. I believe that no matter how good a young pitcher may be, its only fair to expect him to be a fifth starter with a .500 record. For a position player, its only fair to expect him to be a seventh hitter in their lineup. Any production you get over that is icing on the cake. Young players may have the same tools and talent that veterans do, but consistency is the challenge for prospects. Often times great performances are followed by clunkers. It is the nature of being a young player. So next year Drew Hutchison and/or Kyle Drabek may be considerations for the roster returning from injuries, but theyre not predictable upgrades over any pitchers this year. When Alex Anthopoulos puts his roster together for next year and wants to sell an improved team to the fans, he will need predictable veterans to sell not rookies. As far as Ricky Romero is concernec, he may be a competitor for a spot in the rotation but hes as unpredictable as any young player the Jays have. In order to sell a different result to the fans next year, the Jays need experience not youth. 3. A year after the Nationals shut down Stephen Strasburg, teams in the race are wondering what to do with their young aces. Gerrit Cole (Pirates), Shelby Miller (Cards) and Julio Terehan (Braves) are among those who will be facing pitch counts down the stretch. Should teams limit the innings these guys throw to preserve long term careers, or let them loose for short term gain? Last season, I completely agreed with the Nats shutting down Stephen Strasburg. He is such a valuable commodity to their franchise and they need to protect him from any major injury. He has horrible throwing mechanics and he was returning from Tommy John surgery. It didnt matter that they were heading to the playoffs. If they overpitched Strasburg with his poor mechanics and he broke down, it would have had serious financial implications for their franchise. Injuries are more likely to occur when players have poor mechanics or they reach a point of fatigue. Teams have to manage their young pitchers innings in order to avoid fatigue. Pitchers with poor mechanics get fatigued more quickly and are more at risk to break down because of their mechanics. Significant increase in innings from one year to the next makes a pitcher vulnerable as well to injury. As I said, Im in complete agreement with limiting young pitchers innings. Where the Nats went wrong with Strasburg is that they didnt manage him in a way to be available when the games meant the most late in the season or for the playoffs. The Atlanta Braves had the same 160 innings pitched limit on Kris Medlen in 2012, but he finished the season as a starter and was available for the playoffs. The Braves used Medlen as a reliever for the first few months of the season, leaving ample innings for him to start late in the season. Gerrit Cole threw 132 innings last season and he is at 130 innings so far this year. I would skip a few starts over the next several weeks if I were the Pirates. It may impact Coles consistency a bit but his health is more important than his performance. The Pirates have some margin for error in the standings as they have the best record in baseball. There is no margin for error when it comes to a pitchers health. Shelby Miller threw just over 150 innings in 2012. He is at 121 right now. He was hit by a line drive in his last start and may need some time off. I would place him on the DL and legislate a break to his season even if he feels like he can pitch through the bruise and pain he feels. Placing Miller on the DL would take away any temptation for him to come back too quickly. It would also help limit his innings and keep him fresh for the stretch run. Julio Tehran already has thrown 137 innings this year. The most he has thrown previously in a season is 163 innings. The Braves need to protect him in September. They will have an ample lead in the standings to skip a couple starts for Tehran and make sure he doesnt end up with close to 200 innings pitched. I think the team with the toughest decision is the New York Mets. Matt Harvey is a legitimate NL Cy Young candidate. He is second in ERA and first in strikeouts and WHIP. But the Mets games for the rest of the year dont mean anything. They are not a playoff contender. If the Mets are going to win over the next several years, Harvey will have to be the ace of their staff. The Mets need to save Harveys bullets for when the games mean something. They have said that they will likely shut him down after 31 games started. Thats waiting too long. Harvey threw 169 innings a year ago and is already at 159 this year. He is on pace for well over 200 innings pitched. There is way too much to lose to let Harvey keep pitching in September. The Cy Young Award would be a nice achievement for Harvey but at what price. The Nats said going to the World Series last year wasnt worth risking Stephen Strasburg for the long term. I think the same applies to the Harvey. Its just not worth getting hurt. When in doubt, take the pitcher out! Fair And Foul NBC announced that the NFLs Hall of Fame game between the Cowboys and Dolphins averaged 10.1 million viewers. And according to profootballtalk, com the 3.8 rating in the mens 18-49 demographic for that football game beat the 3.2 rating for the MLB All Star game. Thats a difference of 19 per cent. Yes, a preseason football game beat baseballs All-Star game in ratings. Baseball has a problem - a major credibility problem. Fans dont believe in the game anymore. Steroids have hurt baseball in a way that they dont hurt the NFL. More players test positive for performance-enhancing drugs in the NFL than they do for baseball. Every time a baseball player tests positive, people are critical of the game yet we hardly notice when football players test positive. Baseball has the strongest drug testing program among the four major sports. Baseball tests for HGH and football doesnt. Baseballs penalties are the most substantial for violating the drug policy. Yet baseball has a credibility problem when it comes to whether the game is clean or not. Some of baseballs biggest stars have been tied to PEDs. Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Alex Rodriguez are commensurate with Tom Brady, Peyton Manning and Adrian Peterson. Footballs superstars seem to live their life on and off the field the proper way. Baseballs records have long been considered sacred. These most important numbers have been compromised by the cheaters though. The games highest achievements lack legitimacy. The baseball writers are keeping players out of the Hall of Fame because of ties to PEDs. Baseball is becoming professional wrestling. Fans watch it and they arent sure what is real and what is fake. Major League Baseball needs to give the fans something to believe in - Superstars to trust. Bud Selig needs to introduce a new crop of stars to his fans. Mike Trout, Bryce Harper, Manny Machado, Stephen Strasburg, Giancarlo Stanton and Matt Harvey need to be the fresh start for baseball. Selig needs a commitment from these young studs that they will be responsible for the game. They need to be perfect in their decision making on and off of the field. Create a promotional campaign: "Out with the old, in with the new!" They need to show pictures of Clemens, McGuire, Sosa, Bonds and ARod with a big X through them. And then really let the fans get to know the personalities of these young kids. This is the new game of baseball. Give the fans hope in real players. In the meantime, I will keep my fingers crossed that none of these young players are cheating. New Mexico outrebounded the Huskies 38-24.I thought Tim Williams was terrific, New Mexico coach Craig Neal said.Houston Baptist coach Ron Cottrell agreed. We thought that was going to be a matchup issue for us at the four, Cottrell said. We went to zone pretty quick, realizing that was going to be matchup issue throughout. We tried to cover that up going zone. Early on he had 10 quick points. In our man-to-man, we werent able to control him. Hes a load. Hes a heck of a player. Big, physical, really aggressive. I wouldnt want to go against him anymore.Jalen Harris added 13 points for the Lobos.New Mexico never trailed and it was briefly tied at 2. The Lobos gained control with a 14-2 run midway through the first half, building a double-digit lead that it retained for the rest of the game.Colter Lasher led Houston Baptist with 19 points. Four other Houston Baptist players also reached double figures.ddddddddddddEY STAT: The Lobos shot 72 percent (18 for 25) in the first half and 50 percent (10 for 20) in the second half.I thought our guys came out and played very tentative there at the beginning of the game, Cottrell said. I dont think we played up to our capability and we really let them take it straight at us. We had a nice discussion at the half about coming out and playing more aggressive and not just rolling over.KEY STAT II: The Lobos outscored the Houston Baptist 35-12 from the foul line and three Huskies players fouled out: Josh Ibarra, Braxton Bonds and Cody Stetler. We have to play inside out, if we do that well get people in foul trouble, well be able to get to the line, Neal said. When we start getting jump-shot happy, we wont be able to get to the line.UP NEXT: New Mexico is at home Friday against rival New Mexico State in the first of its two meetings. He gave up two hits and only one of his three runs allowed was earned while striking out five and walking one while tying his career-high for innings. The right-hander had been 0-2 with a 7.36 ERA in his last five outings and hadnt gone more than five innings in any of his previous four starts.Step in the right direction, Koehler said. Were playing great baseball and Im happy Im able to contribute. I was trying to get back to what makes me who I am. I needed to pitch better than I have been and I did that tonight. His Phillies counterpart, Jerad Eickhoff (6-11), had one of his worst outings of the season, matching season-worsts for innings pitch and hits allowed. He gave up six runs -- five earned -- on nine hits in five innings with six strikeouts and no walks. The funny thing is I thought I executed a lot of good pitches, Eickhoff said. Theres a couple times I got behind and had to make a pitch over the plate a little more and that kind of hurt me. The opposite-field shot gave Howard 14 for the season and 371 for his career, moving him out of a tie with Gil Hodges for 77th all-time.The Marlins got those runs back in the top of the fifth. Singles by Martin Prado and Yelich to start the frame put runners on first and third. Prado scored on Eickhoffs wild pitch and Yelich reached when shortstop Galvis threw the ball away trying to get Yelich out at third on Derek Dietrichs infield single.Miami added three runs on five hits in the eighth off Daniel Stumpf. Marcell Ozuna had a two-run single and Koehler recorded his second RBI of the season with a single. Ferraris Sebastian Vettel says if he could make one change to F1 it would be a return to normally aspirated engines. The German feels a lot of F1s current problems stem from the decision to switch to V6 hybrid units and feels it was the wrong direction for the sport to take.I personally think the current power unit regulations are too expensive and it would be beneficial for all the teams and the whole sport to go back to something normally aspirated, Vettel said. Pointed out to him that a proposal to cap engine costs was vetoed by Ferrari last year, Vettel stood by his comments - after a moment of awkwardness. What I said and I stick to what I said is that these power units are too expensive, he added. They have cost a lot of money already and they will keep costing a lot of money.Everything else that we have been trying to with changes to rules doesnt change the key problem and I think a lot of problems that we face now goes back to the fact it was the wrong way to go. It is easy now to raise your hand and admit that, but we are still stuck with what we have.I cant change the rules, I think it is a good thing that you dont let one driver or one person change the rules, but the way it is currently set up is probably not the best either. Vettels views were echoed by Bernie Ecclestone who says the alternative engine idea is absolutely not dead and doesnt feel F1 should be used for road car technology experiments. This [V6] engine is good, Im told, for the car manufacturers - although nobody can ever use that engine, the F1 supremo told Sky Sports F1.But if it is and they want to use it to experiment they should use it in the World Touring Car Championship. Its very difficult for Mercedes, and Ferrari for that matter I suppose, to agree to change a power unit that theyve spent a fortune developing.
