CHASKA, Minn. -- Memo to the 11-member U.S. task force organized to break Europes near-chokehold on the Ryder Cup:You did well. Now take the next couple years off.The most lopsided win for the American team since 1981 in the bag, there doesnt seem much need to change the formula that carried the U.S. to a 17-11 win Sunday at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Probably not much need to change the captain, either, after Davis Love III came up a winner in his second time at the helm. But Phil Mickelson is both a tinkerer and a thinker, and he doesnt figure to leave well enough alone. Hes also the most influential member of the task force, and may tweak a few things for the 2018 Ryder Cup in Paris. For us to go to Europe and try to win the Cup is a whole different feat, Mickelson said. Thats going to require a whole different level of play, of solidarity, of fortitude and we are going to have to build on this in two years if we want to try to retain the Cup.Europes dominance dating to 1985 remains impressive: they still claim six of the last eight and eight of the last 11 Ryder Cup wins. Worse yet for the Americans, they havent won on foreign soil since capturing the Cup in 1993 at The Belfry in England. And that has Lefty thinking a bit.The thing about this is that we need to build on this, Mickelson said. Otherwise its all for naught. Some other takeaways from the U.S. win:NEXT U.S. STAR?: When the task force does get back to work, its No. 1 priority should be to find more guys like Patrick Reed. Dubbed Captain America by his teammates, the 26-year-old Texan went 3-1-1 in the event, capping his performance by staring down McIlroy, Europes top player, in the critical opening singles match that delivered some thrilling shots from both players on the front nine.Reeds gutsy showing in all five matches was exceeded only by his bravado. After Tiger Woods, serving as a vice captain, told Reed hed likely be held out for one of those sessions, Reed replied, Youre not sitting me for any matches.Convinced, Woods pushed captain Love to use Reed -- who went 3-0-1 as a rookie two years ago -- and partner Jordan Spieth in Saturdays final slot. They responded with a third win over the tough European pair of Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose.---NEXT EUROPEAN STAR?: Thomas Pieters took his first Ryder Cup swings with a stocking cap on his head on Friday morning. It didnt take him long to get really comfortable.Pieters went 4-1-0 at Hazeltine, the best debut performance ever for a European. Three of those wins came when he was teamed with McIlroy, giving Europe a solid foundation heading into the next Ryder Cup and possibly for years after.Ive got a partner beside me for the next 20 years, McIlroy said with a smile, putting his arms on Pieters shoulders. Im not letting anyone else have him.---FAN BEHAVIOR: A record crowd of more than 50,000 packed Hazeltine for all three days of the event, including some fans who shouted vulgar and obscene things at some of the Europeans. One was removed from the course after an exchange with McIlroy. But the players and captain Darren Clarke commended the U.S. team for helping police the crowds and said 99.99 percent of the fans were exceptional all weekend. McIlroy was asked if the American team should expect similar treatment from European fans in 2018, when the Ryder Cup will be on the line in Paris. We wouldnt encourage any sort of retaliation, McIlroy said. Thats not who we are. Thats not what we do. There wont be. And well be making that clear.---NOT YOUR AVERAGE SPECTATORS: One way to gauge how much the U.S. win meant: Few people were more emotional about it than Woods and Bubba Watson -- and neither hit a shot. Instead, they put their egos and games on hold and served the team as vice captainsBeing a part of the team -- didnt actually hit a golf shot, but to go out there and be with these guys, we are truly a team, Woods said. And we have that mindset coming here with our captain and we did it, we accomplished it and we won it together. This is the greatest thing Ive done in golf, said Watson, who owns two Masters green jackets. This team was amazing. They took me in their arms and let me be a part of it.Woods generally kept a low profile, but convinced Love to put Reed and Spieth back on the course for a fourth consecutive match late Saturday. Reed made the decision look smart with seven birdies and an eagle on his own ball to seal the third win over the Rose-Henrik duo.Watson used his experience to help golfers like Brandt Snedeker stay sharp in big moments.Hes the reason why I got my point today, Snedeker said. He was in my ear all day. Craig Mager Jersey . Capitals head coach Adam Oates said Ovechkin was injured in the first period against the Vancouver Canucks on Monday and clarified it was not a head injury. Rayshawn Jenkins Jersey . Takahashi, who had a 10-point lead after the short program, received 268.31 points after the free skate to finish 15 points ahead of second-place Nobunari Oda. http://www.chargersauthenticshop.com/Chargers-Denzel-Perryman-Draft-Jersey/ . Mickelson barely made the cut but had the best round of the day with nine birdies and an eagle coupled with two bogeys to sit two shots behind leader Craig Lee of Scotland. Lee shot a 69 for a 12-under 204 total. "I just love the fact I am in contention and have an opportunity in my first tournament of the year here in Abu Dhabi," Mickelson said. Michael Schofield Jersey . The Nashville Predators were glad their captain was still on their side. Weber had a goal and two assists, and Roman Josi scored the shootout winner to lift the Predators to a 4-3 win over the Flyers on Thursday night. Philip Rivers Jersey . The Barrie Colts defenceman, who impressed many with his play for Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championship, is the top-ranked skater in the February rankings. He has 19 goals and 24 assists for 43 points in 45 games with the Colts this season. SEATTLE -- If only Collin McHugh could face the Seattle Mariners every time out.The Houston right-hander continued his mastery of the Mariners on Friday night, allowing only two hits in seven stellar innings in the Astros 6-0 win over Seattle.Houston ended Seattles eight-game win streak thanks to McHughs performance and solo home runs from Evan Gattis and Marwin Gonzalez. The Astros and remained four games behind Baltimore and Toronto in the AL wild-card race.We needed that on a lot of levels. Every game is magnified this time of year and we were playing a team that were chasing, Houston manager A.J. Hinch said.McHugh was outstanding in baffling the surging Mariners all night, not allowing a base runner until Nori Aokis leadoff single in the fourth inning. Seattles only other hit off McHugh was Kyle Seagers single with two outs in the seventh.McHugh (11-10) improved to 9-3 in his career against Seattle and 4-0 this season with a 1.08 ERA. Hes 6-0 in his career pitching at Safeco Field.I think we just match up pretty well with them, at least me, McHugh said. Whether its pitch mix, pitching in this park, the times Ive been able to throw against this team Ive been able to have some success. I dont know what the formula is.McHugh won his fourth straight decision with one of his strongest outings of the season. He completed seven innings for just the second time in his previous 14 starts. McHugh also allowed just two hits in his last start against the White Sox, but managed just five innings in that outing.Meanwhile, Seattle starter Felix Hernandez (11-6) stumbled in his biggest start of the season. With the Mariners back in the AL wild-card race, Hernandez failed to get through five innings, giving up five earned runs and eight hits. The solo homers by Gattis and Gonzalez in the fifth were the capper to Hernandezs miserable night. Gattis led off the inning with his 27th home run and Gonzalez followed with his 13th that knocked Hernandez from the game. Gonzalez now has 37 career home runs, 11 of those against Seattle.Hernaandez was in trouble long before the two home runs.dddddddddddd. Jake Marisnicks two-run double in the second inning gave Houston the lead and the Astros added on with Carlos Correas RBI double in the third after Jose Altuve reached on an error and Yuli Gurriel added an RBI single in the fourth. These guys hit the fastball, they really are on it, and if you cant land your secondary pitches or kind of get them going back and forth, its going to be a long night for you, Seattle manager Scott Servais said. Certainly was not on top of his game tonight.Hinch praised the patience of his hitters laying off pitches just outside of the zone and making Hernandez throw strikes. We didnt chase a lot tonight and if you dont chase with him and you make him bring the ball in the strike zone hes human again, Hinch said.HEALTHY ALTUVEAltuve looked just fine after leaving Wednesdays game against Texas with an apparent oblique injury. After being checked out by doctors in Houston on Thursday, Altuve had two hits and was on base four times, twice reaching on errors. He scored his 100th run of the season and collected his 40th double.Hes Jose Altuve. He does nothing wrong, Hinch said.TRAINERS ROOMAstros: 3B Alex Bregman could miss the rest of the regular season with a hamstring injury suffered on Wednesday. Bregman did not travel with the team for its road trip and remained in Houston to get treatment.Mariners: Even after a day off, 1B Adam Lind still had some pain around his thumb and was out of the lineup for a fourth straight game. Servais was hopeful Lind would be available on Saturday.UP NEXTAstros: RHP Mike Fiers (10-7) makes his 28th start of the season. Fiers lasted just 3 1/3 innings in his only other start against Seattle this season, giving up four earned runs.Mariners: LHP James Paxton (4-6) will make his fifth start since coming off the disabled list on Aug. 25 but does not have a win since Aug. 7. Good luck, selection committee. After No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Washington all lost on Saturday -- the first time that has happened on the same day in 31 years -- the 12 members of the College Football Playoff selection committee had a bit of a mess to sort through to determine its third of six rankings. Here are the top questions facing the committee in Week 12:1. How much does head-to-head matter? Some outside the committee meeting room think Louisville deserves to be ranked ahead of Clemson in spite of the Tigers 42-36 win over the Cardinals on Oct. 1. The Amway Coaches Poll this week moved Louisville up to No. 3 and dropped Clemson three spots to No. 5 after the Tigers lost at home to an unranked Pitt team. The Associated Press poll did the same. While there might be some committee members who agree, the group has collectively shown in the past that it holds head-to-head results in high regard. Last week, the committee did not drop Texas A&M below Auburn in spite of the Aggies loss to Mississippi State because Texas A&M beat Auburn. In 2014, the committee dropped TCU from No. 3 to No. 6 in its final ranking in large part because of TCUs loss to Baylor. The committees protocol requires the use of head-to-head results as one of the tiebreakers when evaluating teams with comparable résumés, but its certainly not the only factor. Strength of schedule is also a major component, and Clemson has three wins against teams currently ranked by the committee (Auburn, Louisville and Florida State), while Louisville has one (Florida State). Clemson also has five wins against teams over .500 and Louisville has two (FSU and Wake Forest). Louisville, though, did not lose to an unranked Pitt team at home. Will it be enough to sway the committee in favor of the Cards?2. Will Washingtons strength of schedule sink the Huskies? According to ESPNs Football Power Index, Washington has played the third-easiest schedule in the FBS, and its nonconference strength of schedule is dead last at No. 128, with wins against Rutgers (2-8), Idaho (6-4) and FCS Portland State (3-7). Washington still controls its destiny in the Pac-12 North, and shouldnt be eliminated as a playoff contender after losing to a surging (and ranked) USC team, but the Huskies strength of schedule will now be placed under a microscope by the committee.3. How high can a two-loss team climb? Last year, Stanford finished the season as the committees highest-ranked two-loss team at No. 6 after winning the Pac-12 title. Can the Big Ten surpass that? The Big Ten has two legitimate two-loss contenders in No. 7 Wisconsin and No. 10 Penn State, and ESPNs FPI projects a 43 percent chance theyll face each other in the Big Ten championship game. If Penn State wins out and Michigan loses another game, the Nittany Lions will win the East. No. 11 Oklahoma has been the Big 12s highest-ranked team -- ahead of one-loss, No. 16 West Virginia -- in spite of early losses to Houston and Ohio State. ESPNs FPI projects there is an 80 percent chance that at least two Power 5 conferences will have a champion with more than one loss. The Big 12 is still the most likely (76 percent), followed by the Pac-12 (63 percent) and Big Ten (58 percent).4. Is the Big 12 alive again in the CFP race? The Big 12 is still on life support, but isnt eliminated entirely. The conference needed chaos at the top of the CFP ranking, and certainly got it on Saturday. Not only did three of the top four teams lose, but so did No. 8 Texas A&M and No. 9 Auburn. That should have a trickle-down effect and give OU a boost in the ranking, even if by default. Oklahoma is still undefeated in league play; West Virginia has just one loss and is playing tough defense; and Oklahoma State owns the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Mountaineers. Both WVU and Oklahoma State have some work to do, though. When asked last Tuesday about Oklahoma States controversial loss to Central Michigan, selection committee chair and Texas Tech athletic director Kirby Hocutt said, Were viewing it as a loss. Its not within our purview to decide wins and losses. The committee is aware of what transpired in that game, and by the same token believe that we have Oklahoma State ranked in the appropriate spot that they deserve this week. Can the Cowboys overcome that and win the Big 12 title? West Virginia has to overcome its loss to the Cowboys and a weak schedule. When asked last week about the Mountaineers, Hocutt said, At this point in the season, theyve only played one game against a ranked College Football Playoff opponent, and that was to Oklahoma State, whos ranked No. 13 in this weeks rankings, and West Virginia lost that game. West Virginia just needs to continue to win and build their résumé in the eyes of the committee. Warren Sapp Jersey . Its 1987 and a Brazilian playmaker, known as Mirandinha, is being paraded around St James Park to the passionate Newcastle fans. Vernon Hargreaves III Jersey . Gerald Green and Miles Plumlee? Green had bounced around the NBA when he wasnt playing overseas. The Pacers gave up on Plumlee after just one season. Now Green and Plumlee are key cogs in the Suns surprising breakout season. http://www.shopbuccaneersauthentic.com/Youth-Noah-Spence-Elite-Jersey/ . -- There were a lot of firsts for the Edmonton Oilers on Tuesday night. Donovan Smith Jersey .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. Ryan Smith Jersey . -- Josh Sterk scored once and set up two more as the Oshawa Generals edged the visiting Belleville Bulls 3-2 on Friday in Ontario Hockey League action. LONDON -- Reports: Tyson Fury has vacated his WBO and WBA world heavyweight boxing titles to focus on treatment. ATHENS, Ga. -- Tennessee works on the play every week in practice, just in case.Throw it up and hope for the best.It couldnt have worked out any better: a Hail Mary that gave the Volunteers their most improbable comeback yet.Jauan Jennings hauled in a 43-yard pass from Joshua Dobbs on the final play, leaving No. 11 Tennessee with a stunning 34-31 victory over No. 25 Georgia after the Bulldogs appeared to win the game on a long TD pass of their own with 10 seconds remaining Saturday. It was a crazy play, stuff you dream about, Dobbs said.In all, the teams combined for three touchdowns in the final 3 minutes. The Vols (5-0, 2-0 Southeastern Conference) rallied from a double-digit deficit for the fourth time in five games, but none of the others were like this. Not even close. The SEC East rivals packed a whole games worth of action into a back-and-forth ending, starting with Tennessee going ahead for the first time all afternoon by recovering a Georgia fumble in the end zone with 2:56 to go.Then it was the Bulldogs (3-2, 1-2), going ahead when Jacob Eason tossed a 47-yard touchdown pass to fellow freshman Riley Ridley. With the Sanford Stadium crowd celebrating like their team had won, Tennessee took the kickoff into position to take one shot at the end zone.Dobbs hurled a towering pass that the 6-foot-3 Jennings didnt really have that much trouble bringing down . He leaped above the scrum to make the catch, and then landed on his back as everyone on the Tennessee bench charged the field to celebrate.I just know to go get it, Jennings said. While the Vols whooped it up with their small, orange-clad contingent in a corner of the Sanford Stadium, Georgia straggled off the field in disbelief.Ive never been part of something like that, said Greg Pyke, a senior offensive lineman. We won the game. Then, next thing you know, we lost the game. Its heartbreaking.Georgias early 17-0 lead had been trimmed to 24-21 when Eason dropped back to pass from his own end zone, tried to pull the ball down and was crushed by two Tennessee defenders, Derek Barnett and Cortez McDowell. The ball came loose and Corey Vereen fell on it for a touchdown. That wound up being an afterthought.Eason had another turnover, this one an interception by Malik Foreman, but Georgia used a couple of its timeouts, held defensively and got the ball back again. This time, the young quarterback came through, quickly driving the Bulldogs past midfield and finding Ridley streaking behind two defenders down the left sideline. But Tennessee still had time, especially after an excessive celebration penalty forced the Bulldogs to kick off from their own 20.Evan Berrys 20-yard return got the Vols in range to throw one up. When Jennings brought it down, Tennessee coach Butch Jones sank to his knees, overcome with emotion, while Vols running back Alvin Kamara sprawled out on his back, seemingly in disbelief. We have the most competitive team in the nation, Dobbs said. Theres no quit in this team.THE TAKEAWAYTennessee: The Vols have gained a commanding position in the SEC East with back-to-back victories over Florida and Georgia, likely to be their two leading challengers in the division race. That not only puts Tennessee ahead in the standings, but provides a tiebreaker edge that could come in handy at the end of the season.Georgia: The Bulldogs have now lost two in a row in the SEC, a huge blow to their hopes of contending for a division championship in Kirby Smarts first season as coach. It will be interesting to see how they bounce back from such a devastating loss.CHUBBS ANKLEGeorgia running back Nick Chubb suited up after spraining his ankle in a 45-14 loss to Ole Miss.He got in the game on the Bulldogs second possession, running for a 3-yard gain while the crowd cheered wildly. That would be his only carry.Sony Michel started and finished with 91 yards on 16 carries, while freshman Brian Herrien ran 15 times for 77 yards.POLL IMPLICATIONSTennessee could move back into the Top 10, while Georgia is sure to tumble out of the rankings for the first time this season when The Associated Press poll comes out Sunday. The Bulldogs barely hung on to the final spot after their big loss at Ole Miss.UP NEXTTennessee: The Vols are facing their third straight game against a ranked opponent, and another tough one on the road, when they travel to College Station to take on No. 9 Texas A&M (5-0). It doesnt get any easier after that, either. No. 1 Alabama visits Neyland Stadium on Oct. 15, finishing off the toughest part of Tennessees schedule. http://www.jetsrookiestore.com/Jets-Leonard-Williams-Jersey/ . The 29-year-old from Port Colborne, Ont., has nothing but good things to say about former U.S. marine Liz (Girlrilla) Carmouche ahead of their co-main event Wednesday on the UFCs "Fight for the Troops" televised card in Fort Campbell, Ky. http://www.jetsrookiestore.com/Jets-Bryce-Petty-Jersey/ .com) - The women will also have a new champion at the Australian Open. http://www.jetsrookiestore.com/Jets-Brent-Qvale-Jersey/ . As the crowd erupted, Davis knocked the ball off the glass and back into his hands. With 1:14 to go in overtime, Davis sixth block also became his 17th rebound. That, along with his 32 points -- which tied a career high -- proved too much for Denver to overcome, and the Pelicans held on for their third straight victory, 111-107 on Sunday night. http://www.jetsrookiestore.com/Jets-Eric-Tomlinson-Jersey/ . DAmigo scored twice in regulation and added the shootout winner as the Toronto Marlies edged the San Antonio Rampage 5-4 in American Hockey League action. http://www.jetsrookiestore.com/Jets-Jeremy-Kerley-Jersey/ . Coach Tom Thibodeau says the former MVP will probably start travelling with the team in the next few weeks. Rose tore the meniscus in his right knee at Portland in November and was ruled out for the remainder of the season by the Bulls. RIO DE JANEIRO -- As Australia cheered two of the games best players picking off a handful of high-profile tournament titles earlier this year, Marcus Fraser could only dream about representing his homeland in the Olympic Golf Tournament. Now he is leading it.As silly as that might sound to the average golf fan who might not even know his name, it is just as mind-boggling to the veteran golfer from Corowa in New South Wales who shot 8-under-par 63 on Thursday at the Olympic Golf Course in the sports return to the Games after 112 years.Even just a few weeks ago, Fraser could not have given much hope to being part of the Olympic Games.Im just really embracing the fact that Im here and enjoying it, said Fraser, 38, who competes mostly on the European Tour, where he has three victories, including one earlier this year in Malaysia. That, of course, was overshadowed by the victories posted by countrymen Adam Scott and Jason Day, the No. 1-ranked player in the world who has won three times, including the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Prior to that victory in March, Scott had won the Honda Classic and WGC-Cadillac Invitational. Those two major champions were locks to represent Australia in the Olympics. The only way anyone else could forge their way into the field in Rio was to get inside the top 15 in the world rankings. At No. 90, that was not likely for Fraser. But Scott had long suggested he was not interested in the Olympics, and he withdrew. A potential replacement, Marc Leishman, also backed out, citing concerns over the Zika virus. Day had long expressed his enthusiasm to play in the Olympics, but he also pulled out.Still, Fraser would not be making the trip to Brazil were it not for another Aussie, Matt Jones, deciding not to play. With Scott Hend also qualifying, Fraser ended up being the sixth-best Aussie in the world, but one of the two competing for Olympic gold.Im glad they decided not to come, Fraser said. I really wanted to be here and I think its exciting. But at the same time, IIve really got to respect the decision that those guys made not to be here.dddddddddddd They know its a special event, but for other reasons, they decided not to.After a birdie-bogey start, Fraser rattled off four birdies in a row to shoot 31 on the first nine, then added four more on the back for a 32 and a score of 63, giving him a 3-shot lead over Open champion Henrik Stenson of Sweden and Canadas Graham DeLaet.Fraser needed just 21 putts and managed to get a good bit of his round completed before gusty winds made for some difficult scoring.I think this is probably one of the best rounds of golf Ive ever played for sure, Fraser said. I think given the circumstances, I was quite edgy and a bit jumpy on the first tee, because its such a big occasion to be here at the Olympics. To manage that and go on to play the way I did is really pleasing and a big confidence boost. It undoubtedly did not hurt Fraser that the Gil Hanse-designed Olympic Course has a bit of a sand belt look. The courses in Melbourne, where Fraser played all of his serious golf, are known for some of the qualities that are seen at the venue here, including the unique bunkering. The golf course feels like it has a lot of strategy to it, he said. They have got the variety to move tees around. They have got so many pins [locations] on the greens, and even though they are not huge greens ... they are designed so well that every hole has its own strategy for different winds. For Fraser, so far so good. Now its a matter of getting down to business after an emotional day resulted in a memorable round. When I tapped in on 18, [it] looked like it was only a 3-footer, but when it went in, I looked down there and grabbed my ball out of the hole and its something Ill never forget, Fraser said. Because its pretty special to be able to shoot that score in the first round that golf is back in the Olympics. The PGA Tour heads overseas this week to Shanghai, China for the WGC-HSBC Champions. Russell Knox won the tournament last year at 11 under par, while Bubba Watson and Dustin Johnson won the previous two years. Our experts have put together the players they believe have the skills to succeed and provide big fantasy point totals. This weeks panel is comprised of FantasyGolfInsiders Taras Pitra, Jeff Bergerson, Zach Turcotte and Jason Rouslin and ESPNs Jonathan Coachman, Michael Collins, Bob Harig and Jason Sobel.Note: Golfer salaries listed are for DraftKings.Taras Pitra -- Martin Kaymer ($8,700)Martin Kaymer is not playing in the United States this week and is not the favorite. Thats really all you need to know as far as analysis on him as hes been good outside of the US for the past two years, has posted back to back sixth-place finishes in Euro Tour events and has three top 10s in his last four appearances here -- translation: hes a great value play this week.Jeff Bergerson -- Bubba Watson ($8,800) With another no-cut event this week for the WGC HSBC, I will be targeting guys who can rack up Draftkings points. Not many are better at that than Bubba Watson. In three years, he has two top 10s here at Sheshan Golf Club, including a win in 2014. He is coming off a T10 at the Tour Championship and T20 at the BMW Championship. Overall a disappointing last year for Bubbas standards, I look for him to rebound this year starting this week.Zach Turcotte -- Louis Oosthuizen ($7,400) Few players in golf generate less buzz than Louis Oosthuizen. Since Louis is known for perpetually withdrawing from events, it tends to steer owners away in nearly every circumstance. However, Louis is quite capable of playing solid golf and tends to play his best in the toughest of fields. He is priced at $7,400 this week which is much lower than what I would anticipate for a player with as much experience as Louis at this course. In nine career starts, he has notched six top-15 finishes, making him an excellent value pick this week.Jason Rouslin -- Kevin Kisner ($6,900)Arriving in Shanghai off a decent performance in Malaysia, Kisner comes to China and the Sheshan International Golf Course where he placed second last year. With that in mind, and a great value, I like Kisner to jump start his 2016-2017 season with a top 10 finish this week. Kisner sports a great tee-to-green game and is a great driver of the golf ball. This course seems to fit his game quite well.Jonathan Coachman -- Rory McIlroy ($12,100)My pick this week has been inspired by his incredible final round at the Tour Championship. And in a small way I believe that having Tiger Woods back on our radar also has motivated him. McIlroy is poised to have a huge year in 2017. I think that he wants to get back to No. 1 in the world more than anything. And it could start this week at the HSBC. My pick is your FedEx Cup champion Rory McIlroy.Michael Collins -- Rory McIlroy ($12,100)After the epic battle Rory had with Patrick Reed at the Ryder Cup, it was easy to forget he won the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup. Fully rested but with a Ryder Cup chip on his shoulder, McIlroy is playing an event where he only finished outside the top six once in his past five starts in this event.Bob Harig -- Rory McIlroy ($12,100) Hes had time to rest after a long Ryder Cup week that saw some excellent golf but also hitting the wall. This is McIlroys first stroke-play start since his Tour Championship victory, which also netted him the PGA Tours FedEx Cup title four weeks ago. Hes been inside the top 11 in five previous visits to the WGC-HSBC venue in China.Jason Sobel -- Rory McIlroy ($12,100)His FedEx Cup win happened last season and this is a new one, but the schedule makers cant thwart momentum. Rory has shown that he plays some of his best golf in the later months of the year, and theres no reason to think that will stop at the HSBC this week. World Cup England Jerseys . LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Canadian Andrew Wiggins, headed to Kansas as one of the nations most highly recruited basketball players, and soccer player Morgan Andrews, a Notre Dame recruit, were honored as national prep athletes of the year on Tuesday night. Wiggins, from Vaughan, Ont., averaged a double-double in 25 minutes per game at Huntington St. Josephs Prep in West Virginia. Thats the question facing the organization, as MLSE is purportedly set to announce whether or not Colangelo will have a future with the Toronto Raptors within the next several days. The Raptors are rumoured to be enamoured with the idea of bringing Jackson in to run their entire organization, and Jacksons ties with the new MLSE president and CEO Tim Leiweke have given their pursuit a serious dose of credibility. However, its unlikely that the Raptors would be able to nail down a commitment (one way or the other) from Jackson within their self-imposed timeframe to make a decision on Colangelo, so the Raptors have to start making decisions blind and hope that they can find their way in the dark. The decision, at this point, seems to basically come down to this: a) ditch Colangelo and go all-in on Jackson, pitching him total control of an organization in a major North American market and, no doubt, a paycheque with lots of zeros, or b) keep Colangelo and let him continue to build upon the foundation that hes been assembling for the last few years. Neither option is exactly a no-brainer and the risks on both sides are significant. The first option, if it panned out, would bring one of historys great basketball minds to the Raptors, instantly upgrading their cache throughout the league. It would also give the organization someone with the kind of clout that can make everyone who works beneath him sit up and pay attention. No, he wouldnt be coaching, but hed be someone who knew what hed want in a coach and hed know how to work with a coach to design an organizational structure that would suit both of their needs. Jackson is a man of grand vision, and history has proven that he knows how to execute on his ambitions. Of course, even if the Raptors go all-out in a hunt for Jackson, there is no guarantee that theyd be able to land him. Jackson will never have a shortage of suitors and, while the Raptors have every reason to believe theyd be taken seriously by the Zen Master, there is no certainty that theyd be a frontrunner or his eventual landing spot. If the Raptors fired their long-time general manager only to chase a replacement that eventually signs elsewhere (or worse, decides to stay unemployed), it would be the third time in four summers that the organization was publicly spurned by a big-name target (Chris Bosh in 2010 and Steve Nash in 2012). The Raptorss have long fought against the perception that they are not a legitimate destination in the minds of many NBA personalities, and such high-profile rejections only add to that reputation.dddddddddddd It never helps ones recruiting pitch to have to fight against the belief that no one else seems to want to join your ranks. To compound the possible negatives, if the Raptors decide to go after Jackson and miss out, they will head into a crucial off-season behind the eight ball as they set out to restructure their corporate hierarchy while everyone else begins restocking their rosters. Theyve already spent a month just deciding what to do with Colangelo, and if they fire him and miss out on Jackson, theyll be shopping for a GM while everyone else is shopping for players - hardly an enviable spot to put yourself in. Of course, there are risks the other way, as well. Colangelo has significantly under-performed relative to the expectations set at his feet when he first arrived in Toronto. Now the team is riding a five-year playoff absence and is pressed hard against the salary cap with no pick in the upcoming draft. Colangelo keeps making one questionable move for every savvy move and its kept the team stagnating for the better part of seven years. While Colangelo has proven in the past that he can assemble a powerhouse roster, hes getting further and further away from that point in his career with little evidence that hes about to rediscover that Phoenix Suns magic. So what should the Raptors do? I say go for the splash and chase Phil Jackson. This organization has been running in place for so long that theyve probably forgotten what forward momentum feels like. If they can land Jackson, good on them for bagging the big fish. If not, then at least they can start taking steps towards some other future. Colangelo has been given more time at the head of the Raptors than any man before him and he has given fans precious little during that time to get excited about. Its not that any voice would be better than Colangelos, in fact a great many would probably prove to be far worse, but the Raptors have had seven years to evaluate the man and what hes given them to sift through hardly offers a ringing endorsement. Maybe chasing Jackson is less about landing Jackson than providing MLSE and the Raptors with an excuse to start looking in another direction. Landing Colangelo was a huge deal back in 2006, but in 2013 the excitement has long since worn off. The NBA is about chasing success, and its time that the Raptors started doing that again. LONG POND, Pa. -- With rain pelting the garage roof at Pocono Raceway and knowing hed have to wait another day to race, Mikhail Aleshin just shrugged. No big deal for the first Russian-born driver to win an IndyCar pole.Just one more day sitting on the pole, Aleshin said Sunday. Thats life. I just want to win this race. For me, it doesnt matter if its going to be today, tomorrow, or next month. Im still on the pole.IndyCar officials acted quickly Sunday and postponed the race at the triangular 2.5-mile track until noon Monday because of persistent mid-afternoon rain. With no lights to allow for night racing and no quick end to the downpour in sight, drying the track in time to get in 101 of the 200 laps to make the race official was not possible. The race was scheduled to begin at 3:09 p.m. Sunday.Aleshin turned a fast two-lap average of 220.454 mph on Saturday in his No. 7 Schmidt Peterson Motorsports Honda to edge Josef Newgarden for the pole. Its the third time this season Newgarden has qualified second. He was on the front row at the Indy 500 and at Iowa, just missing the top spot Saturday with a two-lap average of 220.195 mph.Takuma Sato will start third, followed by Helio Castroneves, Carlos Munoz, Aleshins teammate James Hinchcliffe, Alexander Rossi, Will Power, Tony Kanaan and Ed Carpenter. Points leader Simon Pagenaud qualified 14th in windy conditions, while defending race winner Ryan Hunter-Reay crashed in morning practice and did not qualify.Team Penskes Pagenaud and Power are 1-2 in the points standings, separated by 58 points, and sitting around another day wasnt exactly what they wanted to be doing. Its a back-to-back races coming up -- three in a row, Power said. It is what it is. Sit back and relax for the night and get ready to again tomorrow. Nothing really changes. When you wake up in the morning, you get a little bit nervous and butterflies. Both Power and Pagenaud, who was hanging out with his Jack Russell Terrier, Norman, said they were disappointed for the fans.Only three races will remain in the IndyCar season after Pocono -- Texas, Watkins Glen, and the season finale at Sonoma on Sept. 18, which is worth double points. Next weeks Firestone 600 at Texas Motor Speedway is a makeup from a race in mid-June that also was postponed by rain -- after the drivers had completed only 71 of the scheduled 248 laps.Newgarden is fourth in the standings and wont be able to race at Texas because he crashed out of the race. Starting on the front row at Pocono still gives him a glimmer of hope, though he trails Pagenaud by 120 points. Were taking it as it is, Newgarden said. Were going to have a points loss there (Texas). Well push forward from that.Rain at Pocono Raceway three weeks ago pushed the finish of the NASCAR Sprint Cup race until Monday. Shaun Wane is hoping Wigan Warriors can exact revenge on Brisbane Broncos for their golden point extra-time defeat in last years World Club Challenge Series. The Warriors were beaten 14-12 by the Broncos on home soil last February, with Corey Parker scoring a decisive penalty after the match had ended 12-12 in normal time. Ahead of Saturdays match at the DW Stadium, Wane says he is well aware of the task facing his side and has challenged them to overcome a very strong Brisbane team. For long periods of last years game we dominated and did a good job on Brisbane, the Warriors head coach told Sky Sports News HQ.But I am under no illusions, we need to be better this year, theyve got some good individual athletes and we are looking forward to the game on Saturday. Brisbane will be aiming to replicate their victory at the DW Stadium last year The three teams that have come over from the NRL are all fantastic teams. I am sure Brian [McDermott] and Keiron [Cunningham] at Leeds and St Helens will do a fantastic job on their respective days, but the only thing I am concerned about is Wigan getting the win against a very strong Brisbane team. Theyve got some real good quality, but so have we and we owe them one for last year. They were good last year, but I thought we were good for the win, apart from the decision at the end. The Warriors followed up their opening-day success against Catalans Dragons by claiming victory at Huddersfield Giants last Friday. Brian Carney speaks to Johnathan Thurston and previews this weekends World Club Series matches Despite his sides 100 per cent start to the campaign, Wane admits the players are yet to match his high standards. I wasnt happy. We have had two wins, but we have not been at our best. Detail in our skill is what we pride ourselves on, but it wasnt to my standard, he added. We will improve, the conditions on Saturday are going to be tough, but they are going to be tough for Brisbane as well. Our skill needs to improve, how we finish our sets and having good field positions in this sort of weather is really important. Those are the things we are trying to work on with the players this week. Wane will also come up against the newly-appointed England head coach Wayne Bennett. New England coach Wayne Bennett will be in the dugout for Brisbane Bennett was confirmed as Steve McNamaras successor on February 2, signing a two-year contract with the Rugby Football League, but he will also continue in his role with Brisbane. When asked whether he felt Bennett would have one eye on Wigans English players, Wane said: I spoke to him yesterday, he is a pretty focused guy. He is one of the best coaches in the world, if not the best and I think he is too professional for that. Hell want Brisbane to come all this way and put on a performance and beat us again. I am looking forward to pitting myself against an outstanding coach. Watch Wigan Warriors v Brisbane Broncos live on Sky Sports 1 HD on Saturday from 7.30pm. Catch the match for £6.99 on NOW TV. EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson has a torn meniscus in his right knee, coach Mike Zimmer said Monday. The Vikings are still evaluating the injury and have not yet determined how much time he will miss. Zimmer initially announced the nature of the injury while recording his weekly appearance on a local radio show and told KFXN-FM that he has not yet ruled out Peterson for the game on Sunday against Carolina.Peterson was meeting with team doctors and athletic trainers to discuss his options, which include surgery to address the injury. We are going through the evaluation process to figure out what the next procedure will be, Zimmer told reporters during his weekly news conference. We are still going through all the options.Peterson, the 2012 NFL MVP, was injured in the third quarter of Minnesotas 17-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night on a 5-yard run , his longest of the night. He needed crutches to exit U.S. Bank Stadium, but it does appear Peterson will be able to return at some point this season after initial fears that he tore his ACL.Peterson has long had a reputation as a fast healer, which was never more clear than when he tore the ACL in his left knee with two weeks to play in the 2011 season and still made it back to start the 2012 season.dddddddddddd A torn meniscus is considered much less serious than a torn ACL, but it still often calls for several weeks of rehab before a player is ready to take the field again.Anytime you have a guy like that in a leadership role that does go down, obviously everyone kind of takes a step back, defensive captain Brian Robison said. NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee left tackle Taylor Lewan has made no secret of his desire to be considered the NFLs best at his position, the kind of reputation built by playing well against the top pass rushers. Not only has Jack Conklin been one of the leagues most impressive rookies, hes already considered one of the leagues top right tackles.Lewan and Conklin, along with the rest of the Titans, have allowed just 18 sacks, fifth fewest in the NFL, after allowing Tennessee quarterbacks to be sacked a league-worst 54 times in 2015.Their protection of Marcus Mariota will be tested heavily Sunday when Von Miller and his NFL-high 13 + sacks and the defending Super Bowl champion Denver Broncos (8-4) visit looking to pad their league-leading 36 sack total.Theyre unbelievable pass rushers, and theyre great football players, not just pass rushers, Lewan said Wednesday. Having this opportunity is huge, and its awesome. I cant wait.Mariota missed four games as a rookie after being hurt in the pocket. Through the 12 games he played in 2015, he was sacked 38 times. This season only Oakland (12) and the Giants, Pittsburgh and Washington (all tied with 16) have allowed fewer sacks than Tennessee. The Titans also rank seventh allowing a sack per pass attempt on 4.7 percent of passes. The quarterback has noticed how much less he finds himself scrambling away from pass rushers. Those five guys up front have done an incredible job, Mariota said. As we go forward, we can always improve in certain areas. I can always get the ball out quicker, throw the ball away, but those guys up front have done a great job and have made my life a whole lot easier.Improving the offensive line had been at the top of Tennessees to-do list in recent years, and first-year general manager Jon Robinson made the key moves to set up this unit.Robinson signed veteran center Ben Jones away from Houston to anchor the middle, then traded back up to No. 8 overall to take Conklin out of Michigan State. Conklin has started every game at right tackle, helping bookend the line opposite Lewan. He doesnt look like a rookie, Miller said on a conference call. He doesnt look like a rookie for sure -- very athletic. He has all the abilities to be an elite tackle in the National Football League. The Titans have protected Mariota so well that theyve now kept him from being sacked at all in four of their last eight games. That has coincided with Mariota throwing at least two touchdown passes in each of those games, with Tennessee going 5-3 in that span.Broncos coach Gary Kubiak is very familiar with Jones, having coached the lineman in Houston. Kubiak also credits Mariotas improved play with helping the Titans quarterback avoid some sacks.Obviously, as coaches, you try to protect your quarterback as best you can, Kubiak said. At the same time, as quarterbacks play more and more, they can protect themselves, too. I think all those things go hand-in-hand, but you see how much more comfortable he is and, obviously, theyre very good up front.Conklin watched Miller earn MVP honors at Super Bowl 50 in February and now is preparing to face the linebacker who has posted double-digit sack totals in five of his first six seasons. Yes, Conklin says that feels a little weird. The rookie insists hes over being star struck this deep into the season. What we focus on is everyones just another player, Conklin said. If we stop focusing as much of who they are and just what we have to do on each play, it takes a little bit away from it.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL.---Follow Teresa M. Victory at Leeds Headingley ground gave the Cowboys the right to call themselves the best club side in world rugby league and completed a 3-0 sweep for Australian sides in this weeks World Club Series. Michael Morgan scores a try for North Queensland Cowboys A hard-fought first half ended all square at 4-4 but the Cowboys pulled clear in the second period, scoring 34 unanswered points as an NRL side enjoyed a third convincing win over a Super League team in as many days. Leeds defeat was compounded when they were forced to play the last few minutes a man down after Mitch Garbutt was sent off for punching James Tamou. Man of the match Johnathan Thurston nails another conversion In his first World Club Challenge, Johnathan Thurston orchestrated an ultimately crushing victory and even got a second-half try. There was nothing to separate the teams at half-time but after the break, the Cowboys ran in six more tries to romp home. North Queensland Cowboys celebrate with the trophy at Headingley It was incredibly tight early on and Leeds had a golden opportunity to open the scoring with three sets of six deep in the Cowboys territory. The visitors defence was outstanding, however, as they kept the Rhinos at bay and eventually got the ball back on the sixth tackle. That appeared to inspire the Cowboys, and at the first defensive error from the hosts, North Queensland pounced.Unsurprisingly, it was Thurston at the heart of the move, delaying his pass to send Michael Morgan over for a simple finish. Thurston could not convert in the strong wind, but the Cowboys led 4-0 after 22 minutes. Johnathan Thurston says his team-mates should be proud of their special achievement Nevertheless, Leeds were putting the Cowboys under pressure, and it was a mistake by Thurston that led to the home sides first score. His wide pass was picked off by Liam Sutcliffe, who raced away and although the Cowboys got back, an offload from Adam Cuthbertson allowed Rob Burrow to dive over. The teams went in level at 4-4, but North Queensland flew out of the blocks in the second half. A first high kick from the visitors was fumbled by Ash Handley and that offered Kane Linnett the simplest of finishes. Leeds Rhinos Mitch Garbutt was dismissed for this hefty punch on James Tamou Thurston converted this time to make it 10-4 with barely two minutes gone in the second half.ddddddddddddNorth Queensland soon had another try as a penalty for a late hit on Thurston gave them an extra set of six, and they spread the ball wide for Kyle Feldt, who handed off Ryan Hall in emphatic fashion to finish. Mike Stephenson has called for English rugby league to go back to basics and focus on youth development The result was beyond doubt just after the hour when Lachlan Coote pounced to touch down Thurstons deflected grubber-kick. Two minutes later, Thurston scored a try of his own, slipping a tackle and diving over before converting. Johnathan Thurston joins Jon Wells at the Sky Pad to analyse North Queenslands World Club Challenge win Leedss resistance was crumbling and Justin ONeill was next over, slipping plenty of tackles, before the Rhinos lost Garbutt to a red card for a punch on Tamou, who was himself sin-binned, leaving both sides with 12 men.The Cowboys had the final word as ONeill completed a try double with a fine finish. Rob Burrow says Leeds Rhinos will be looking for an immediate response Watch Leeds Rhinos in Super League action away to Catalans Dragons on Saturday, live on Sky Sports 2 HD from 4.55pm. A version of this story appears in ESPN The Magazines September 19 NFL Preview II Issue. Subscribe today! Not every team has Super Bowl aspirations to start the season. The Browns just want to develop their young talent and get something out of Robert Griffin III. The Cowboys, meanwhile, need rookie signal-caller Dak Prescott to hold his own and steady the team until Tony Romo returns, and maybe -- just maybe -- they can get into the playoffs in a seemingly weak NFC East. And anything less than a deep playoff run for the talent-rich Cardinals would be a failure. Those are the things I had in mind when I tried to figure out what constitutes a realistic success and failure for every team in 2016. Here are my best- and worst-case scenarios by division. AFC East | AFC North| AFC South | AFC West NFC East | NFC North | NFC South | NFC WestAFC EASTBuffalo BillsBest case: Ryan brothers Rex and Rob nudge the defense into the top 10, and QB Tyrod Taylor continues to evolve. The D, which disappointed in 15 (22.4 points per game allowed) after the team spent heavily in free agency and with trades, figures out how to play together. Rookie DT Adolphus Washington fills in for the suspended Marcell Dareus, and the Bills survive against three top-10 offenses in the first four weeks.Worst case: After cutting troubled big back Karlos Williams, Buffalo cant match 2015s ground attack (NFL-best 2,432 yards). Taylor (104 carries, second most among QBs) doesnt hold up and cedes the reins to EJ Manuel as the Bills miss the playoffs. Rex rides his hot seat.Miami DolphinsBest case: Coach Adam Gase makes good on giving Ryan Tannehill more authority at the line of scrimmage, and the QB returns to completing 66 percent of his passes and throws 30 TDs for the first time. Second-year RB Jay Ajayi makes the most of his chance, 30-year-old Arian Foster proves resurgent and the Fins compete for a postseason spot.Worst case: DT Ndamukong Suh still doesnt earn his QB money, and new LB Kiko Alonsos twice-injured left ACL prevents him from returning to his stellar rookie form of 2013. The Dolphins are sunk by a defense that cant improve on last season (376.2 yards and 24.3 points allowed per game). http://www.bearsrookiestore.com/Bears-Mark-Sanchez-Jersey/ . -- In one brief spurt, Brazil turned a close game into a rout and proved again it will be a strong World Cup favourite. http://www.bearsrookiestore.com/Bears-Sam-Acho-Jersey/ . -- Ty Montgomery had 290 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns, and fifth-ranked Stanford held on to beat No. http://www.bearsrookiestore.com/Bears-Prince-Amukamara-Jersey/ . Louis Cardinals. Victorino is batting sixth and playing right field after missing two games because of back tightness. http://www.bearsrookiestore.com/Bears-Dion-Sims-Jersey/ .Y. - Detroit goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has earned NHL first star of the week honours after winning in his first three appearances of the season. Santa Clara guard Jared Brownridge scored 44 points against Arizona last season. He gets another bite at the Wildcats on Thursday night. The eighth-ranked Wildcats (4-0) will try to find a way to slow down Brownridge when the teams meet in the bracketed part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Invitational at 10:30 p.m. ET.Arizona escaped with a 75-73 overtime win over the Broncos last season in a tournament in Fullerton, Calif. They should have beaten us last year, Arizona coach Sean Miller said. No one knows that more than them. That was a career game for Brownridge, but it was no fluke. The senior earned first-team All-West Coast Conference honors last season, finishing 21st nationally in scoring at 20.3 points per game. He is averaging 16.8 points this season and is coming off a 32-point effort Monday night, when Santa Clara (3-2) beat visiting Sacred Heart 84-74.Miller will likely turn to senior guard Kadeem Allen, the teams best perimeter defender who has made his way back from a left knee sprain. He played 35 minutes Monday night as Arizona finally pulled away to beat Northern Colorado 71-55.I think hes back, Miller said after the game. He was clearly better tonight. And we needed him.Brownridge drains 41 percent of his shots from behind the arc over his career, but he started this season just 4 of 29. He was 7 of 15 on 3-pointers Monday night. It was so great to see Jared shoot the basketball and score like we all know hes capable of, Broncos coach Herb Sendek said. He was really hitting his sshots and that really helped us get going on offense.ddddd

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- Pete Carroll swore he was not thinking about Super Bowl XLIX on Sunday night, you know, the one he handed to the New England Patriots as sure as Roger Goodell handed them the Vince Lombardi Trophy. He said he was not rewinding the past, only living for the moment, all that blah, blah, blah. And then the 65-year-old coach of the Seattle Seahawks left his postgame microphone inside Gillette Stadium and skipped toward his locker room hollering and whooping in a liberating way, betraying the words spoken to a roomful of reporters. Sometimes Carroll acts this way as the NFLs answer to the late, great Dick Clark -- the worlds oldest teenager. But this was different. Carroll wanted this one badly, even if its part of his job description to never, ever admit it.The NBC cameras caught him acting out on the sidelines, and these regular-season scenes in November reminded me of a regular-season NBA night in January in 1995, when Pat Riley, coach of the Knicks, downplayed his first game in Houston since his team blew a 3-2 Finals lead there the previous June. To punctuate a crucial made basket in that Knicks victory in January, Riley let out a primal scream the likes I hadnt heard from him before or since. This was the sound of a coach who had allowed his guard, John Starks, to shoot 2 for 18 in Game 7 the previous June and had been having a hard time forgiving himself for it.Two years ago in the Arizona desert, Carroll made a much bigger mistake on the goal line. He needed to give the ball to Marshawn Lynch in the closing seconds to win his second straight Super Bowl title, and instead he ordered his quarterback, Russell Wilson, to throw a slant pass to Ricardo Lockette. Lynch had run for 1,306 yards and 13 touchdowns that season, and Wilson had run for 849 yards and six touchdowns. Pressured by Belichicks stunning decision to let the clock bleed away precious seconds, Carroll decided he wanted to get the ball to Lockette, who managed 11 catches all year. An undrafted New England rookie out of West Alabama named Malcolm Butler beat the receiver to it.Theres really nobody to blame but me, Carroll said that night. He has had to live with it ever since, just like Riley had to live with leaving in Starks in 94, and Grady Little had to live with leaving in Pedro Martinez in 2003. Carroll has done a good job of it, at least publicly. It sure seems he has taken the hit like a man.Only this return match with the Patriots was a wonderful opportunity to vent, to flex his considerable coaching muscles, and to let loose a scream or three from his toes. Pete Carroll wasnt just the coach who made the worst call in Super Bowl history to gift wrap Bill Belichick his fourth championship ring. He was also the coach fired by Robert Kraft after the 1999 season so Kraft could steal Belichick from the Jets.In the leadup to this game, you could hear the hurt in Carrolls voice. He said hed planned on having control in New England but that it didnt really work out that way, the way I hoped, until I went back to USC and when I got a chance to be in charge again. He pointed out that he was a smash hit at USC -- except with NCAA investigators -- when he had the power over his program that Kraft didnt give him in Foxborough. He pointed out that Kraft did give Belichick the chance to take that thing over and run it and do it exactly the way a football guy sees it, and the rest has been a great history and a great success story. So Carroll had so much invested in his first game back since Kraft fired him all those years ago. It was a wonderful back-and-forth football game, too, not unlike the epic Super Bowl encounter between these two teams. Tom Brady opened with a nine-play, 75-yard touchdown drive that culminated in the first LeGarrette Blounts three scores, and the Seahawks started to work the problem from there.Wilson ended up outplaying his legendary counterpart, throwing three touchdown passes to Bradys none, but the night came down to -- what else? -- a questionable decision by Carroll and a goal-line stand. First, the questionable call. After his team took a 31-24 lead on a beautiful Wilson throw to Doug Baldwin with four minutes and change to play, Carroll decided to attempt a two-point conversion rather than the safer kick that wouldve forced the Patriots to score eight points to tie.Why would they go for two here? Belichick was caught asking into his headset. We wanted to see if we could put it out of reach, Carroll explained, and make it a two-score deal. It was an unnecessary gamble, and one that predictably failed. New England drove the ball down the field and to the Seattle 1 with only seconds to play. Everyone in the building had a flashback. Some 2,700 miles from University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the Patriots and the Seahawks and Belichick and Carroll would battle again over a very small piece of real estate. The most recognizable Pats fan in the house Sunday night, Mark Wahlberg, recalled before the game that he was in Krafts suite for the Super Bowl. He described the chaotic endgame scene of security officials entering the suite and preparing to escort the winning owner and family and friends down to the field for the coronation before Jermaine Kearse made his absurd catch in the same building where David Tyree made his to beat New England in Super Bowl XLII.It was sheer devastation, Wahlberg told ESPN.com as he was promoting Tuesdays debut of his USA Network show, Shooter, for which he serves as executive producer. We saw [Kearse] bobble it and we thought he dropped it and we were all cheering, and then we saw the replay on the Jumbotron. ... But we went from crying tears of sadness to tears of joy after the Butler interception. It was one of the craziest rides Ive ever been on.Wahlberg says he keeps a picture on his phone of Carroll working a drive-thru window and reaching out to deliver an order to a customer. Should I just hand this to you, the mocking Internet caption reads, or step back five yards and throw it for no reason. The Patriots didnt throw it until fourth down, after Blount and Brady failed to barrel it in. Brady threw a fade pass to Rob Gronkowski, who was tangled up with Kam Chancellor, and the presiding official made a good no-call. When it was over, Carroll said the Patriots had worked on that very play with Chancellor and a tall practice squad receiver, Marcus Lucas, in the weeks final practice. Just as Butler had worked on jumping the slant before the Super Bowl.It was a big moment in practice, Carroll said of Chancellors victory over Lucas. It was a much bigger moment in the game. Belichick gave a warm hug to Carroll on the field, and then raved about Seattles program the way he has done in the past. Carroll called Brady and Belichick the best of all time, and spoke of how much the Patriots had going for them entering this game: their relatively good health, the fact that they were coming off a bye week, the fact that they werent traveling across the country, the fact that they werent coming off a short week (Seattle played Monday night), and the fact that they never, ever lose at home.It cant get any better than that, Carroll said.In the winners locker room, Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman fielded a question about the Super Bowl and decided the similar finish in Gillette Stadium was more ironic than anything. He said he thought the Seahawks might see the Patriots again this season, in February. He said that potential rematch would do far more for his coachs legacy than Sunday nights. Its not going to eliminate the criticism [of Carroll], Sherman said of the victory. This game is not even close to the significance of the Super Bowl. I think he gets that its a different year and hes kind of moved past it as much as you can.As far as making good on his worst night as an NFL coach, Pete Carroll still as a long way to go. But he did gain ground Sunday night.?He did pick up a good 10 or 15 yards on the ghost that will haunt him from here to his next championship parade. http://www.authenticshoptitans.com/harry-douglas-jersey/ . -- Whether Jeremy Hill deserves a prominent role in LSUs offence this early in the season is a matter for debate. http://www.authenticshoptitans.com/josh-kline-jersey/ . STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Injuries are mounting for No. 10 Penn State, as coach James Franklin announced Tuesday that offensive tackle Paris Palmer will miss the rest of the season after suffering a leg injury in the first quarter of Saturdays game against Indiana.Franklin declined to release specifics about the injury. Palmer is now one of four injured Nittany Lions offensive linemen. We do have a little bit of an injury situation going on, Franklin acknowledged during his weekly news conference.Offensive tackle Brendan Mahon, who was hospitalized last week, was not listed on this weeks depth chart. But Franklin again declined Tuesday to say whether Mahon was out for the year, saying only that, Well see how it goes.Offensive lineman Connor McGovern, a true freshman, also was injured Saturday -- although Franklin said it was too early to say whether he would return in time for Saturday nights game against Rutgers. The fourth injured lineman, Andrew Nelson, suffered an apparent knee injury last month.Palmers injury Saturday was the latest blow to an improved offennsive line that took an obvious step back without four tackles.dddddddddddd Penn State allowed 15-tackles-for-loss against Indiana. The redshirt senior limped off the field Saturday and headed to the locker room after blocking on a play in which quarterback Trace McSorley scampered for a 10-yard touchdown. Palmer later returned on crutches. As a result, Franklin has not ruled out taking off the redshirts of true freshmen Will Fries and Michal Menet. As it stands, redshirt freshman Ryan Bates and redshirt sophomore Chasz Wright are expected to start Saturday.Franklin remained optimistic about any potential changes Tuesday, however, because Penn State overcame numerous injuries at linebacker earlier in the season. At one point, seven linebackers were hurt or unavailable for the Lions.Im proud of the mentality we had at linebacker earlier in the year when we faced some challenges, he said. Same thing with the offensive line right now.
