Vesey skated up and beat Juuse Saros with a wrister over the goalies stick.Actually practiced some breakaways this morning, Vesey said. They usually go to my backhand. But Ive been working on faking my backhand and going to the forehand and just trying to flip it over his pad, and luckily it snuck in.Then Zuccarello scored to end the game.Rick Nash scored in regulation, and the Rangers improved to 11-5-0 away from New York in finishing off a two-game road swing with a second straight victory. Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves, including stopping Ryan Johansen to start the shootout. The Predators traded his rights to Buffalo, then Vesey chose the Rangers.Fans made it clear how unhappy they were at his decision by booing and chanting at him almost every time he came on the ice. They booed heavily once again as he came out to shoot first for the Rangers in the shootout. Once he beat SSaros, a smattering of Rangers fans cheered loudly.ddddddddddddbviously we know the whole storyline, but I thought he handled it great and certainly comes through in a big situation there, Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh said. His biggest came with a pad save on James Neal with 2:32 left as Neal beat a sprawling Dan Girardi on a breakaway chance. Our goaltender really stepped up in the third period, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said.In overtime, Nashville got lucky when the puck went across the crease just outside the goal line with 3:10 left. Lundqvist got help from Zuccarello blocking a shot from Johansen in the slot with 90 seconds left.Nash put a wrister top shelf from a tough angle from the left for a 1-0 lead on New Yorks seventh shot at 7:47. He beat defenseman Petter Granberg, who played with P.K. Subban scratched with an upper-body injury.Nashville finally tied it up nearly midway through the second when Fisher took advantage of a screen in front by Colin Wilson to score from the high slot. BOSTON -- Doc Rivers will be the next coach of the Los Angeles Clippers if the NBA approves the rare but not unprecedented trade of an active coach, a Boston Celtics official told The Associated Press on Sunday night. The deal would bring Boston a first-round draft pick in 2015, according to the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because it is pending a trade call with the NBA office. Rivers, who had three years and $21 million left on his contract with the Celtics, must also reach an agreement on a new deal with the Clippers. Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said the team had no announcement. The tentative agreement on Sunday wraps up weeks of haggling over the deal and frees Rivers from presiding over the dismantling of the team that won the franchises record 17th NBA title in 2008. The Celtics and Clippers have also discussed sending Kevin Garnett to Los Angeles in a package with Rivers for draft choices, centre DeAndre Jordan and point guard Eric Bledsoe. But NBA commissioner David Stern nixed those talks this week, saying teams arent allowed to trade active players for a coach. A deal for Garnett could still happen, but the teams would have to convince the league that it was a separate deal. The 37-year-old big man has a no-trade clause in the contract that will pay him 23.5 million over the next two years, but it is believed he would waive it to be reunited with Rivers on the West Coast. He has also discussed retiring. Boston could also cut ties with Paul Pierce, the longest-tenured member of the team, who is due to earn $15.3 million next season; he could be bought out for $5 million. Pierce will be 36 by the 2013-14 opener and showed signs of slowing down this season, when he averaged the fewest minutes per game in his career. Rivers took over the Celtics in 2004 in the midst of the longest title drought in franchise history and -- with thanks to the New Big Three of Garnett, Pierce and Ray Allen -- guided them to the 2008 NBA title. They returned to the NBA Finals two years later, losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in seven games. But the Celtics have regressed steadily since then, twice failing to get past the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference playoffs. This year they finished third in the Atlantic Division -- they had won it five straight times -- and lost to the New York Knicks in the first round. That convinced many that it was time to rebuild -- a process Rivers was reluctant to supervise. If the Celtics unload Garnett and Pierce, that would leave them with point guard Rajon Rondo as their only established star. Rivers had the second-longest tenure of any NBA coach to San Antonios Gregg Popovich, compiling a 416-305 record in Boston that was the third-most wins in franchise history behind Red Auerbach (795) and Tommy Heinsohn (427). He also spent four-plus seasons with the Orlando Magic and is 587-473 in all. Trades for coaches have occurred about a half-dozen times in NBA history, most recently in 2007 when the Heat received compensation for allowing Stan Van Gundy to go to the Orlando Magic. In 1983, the Chicago Bulls sent a second-round draft pick to Atlanta as compensation for coach Kevin Loughery. The Hawks used that pick to take Glenn "Doc" Rivers. TWICKENHAM, England -- ?As news broke of the 10cm tear in Jack Nowells quad which puts his participation in the November Tests in grave doubt, Eddie Jones and Paul Gustard were sat at Twickenham Stoop, eyes trained on Harlequins winger Marland Yarde as he played Northampton.A combination of Anthony Watsons fractured jaw and Nowells torn quad -- injuries both sustained on Englands Brighton training camp -- means the chances are England will need a new-look partnership on the wings when South Africa come to town on Nov. 12.Yarde and Baths Semesa Rokoduguni are in the driving seat to fill those two berths.Yarde can be a frustrating player. Supremely talented, his form drifts from one end of the spectrum to the other and no more so than in an England jersey. For every memorable moment, such as his dart through Richie McCaw against New Zealand in Dunedin back in 2014, there is a dip, and he was dropped following the first Test of last summers tour of Australia. But England coach Jones is a fan. Prior to the Brisbane Test back in June, Jones labelled him very coachable but also said he needed to sort out Yardes attitude, labelling him previously too big for his boots. Jones felt he had dealt with that saying Yarde was now back down to earth and would be a really special player for England. The summer Test series passed without Yarde really grasping the opportunity but there is a sense -- reinforced while watching him impress against Northampton on Saturday -- that he is confident and finding Test-standard form. His coach John Kingston certainly thinks so. He was absolutely terrific, Kingston said soon after their 20-9 victory. The season started a little bit slowly for him. He had a couple of knocks but the last couple of weeks hes been fantastic.Yarde made 43 metres heading forward but his work in defence was also admirable, putting in five tackles. There was a moment when George North sniffed an opportunity on the left flank but after a 10 metre run up, he hit the Yarde brick wall and that move was stopped resolutely in its tracks.Ive got a huge amount of time for him, Kingston added. He puts everything into his training and everything into his play. He was outstanding today.Marlands always had unbelievably good intent to do the right thing. Ive got a soft spot for him, hes a good man. I think hes really put his weight behind everything this year and he always gives 100 per cent. What may have also impressed Jones was how Yarde linked up with his England and Quins teammate Mike Brown. There was a moment in the first half where Brown chased a long kick and just kept it from going into touch; flicked it back in-field and there was Yarde to kick long.It is a partnership that looks increasingly likely to be reunited for Englands November opener against the Springboks.Marlands a fine player, Mikes a fine player, Kingston said. Its not my job to pick the England side but hopefully they gave Eddie some difficult decisions to make.Yarde has had his opportunities in the past, but player, club and country alike will have a sense of optimism that this may be the moment he takes the next step. Meanwhile, there were huge victories for Sunderland and West Ham over fellow relegation rivals, leaving the battle to avoid the drop up for grabs with the bottom 11 teams separated by just six points. Robredo, ranked No. 16, bounced back from an upset loss to Leonardo Mayer in the second round of the Royal Guard Open in Chile last week to down Carreno Busta in 1 hour, 25 minutes. On a day filled mostly with qualifying matches, fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain also entered the second with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, while Guido Pella of Argentina defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 7-6 (6), 6-4 to advance. Were dealing with yet another abbreviated slate on Thursday, but on the bright side, weve seen some truly awful Thursday slates this season, and while this one isnt great, its not the worst weve seen. With a legitimate ace at the top and multiple mid-tier options also in play, this should add up to a decent little slate for DFS players.PitchingEliteMadison Bumgarner, as you might expect, is the top play of the day. He heads to Oakland, where hell have to face a DH instead of a pitcher. However, the O.co Coliseum is a pitcher-friendly environment, and while the As fare better against left-handers than righties, theyre still middle-of-the-road. Plus, Bumgarner is elite, so hes matchup-proof anyway. His 1.99 ERA is second in baseball only to Clayton Kershaw, and his 10.1 K/9 is a career best. Dont expect a lofty strikeout total, as the As are striking out an MLB-best 16 percent in June. That said, the floor here is high, and thats what you want in cash games.SolidNo team in baseball strikes out more against right-handed pitching than the Brewers, who fan 26 percent of the time. Add in the fact that they also dont do much damage when they do make contact (90 wRC+), and Kenta Maeda finds himself in a very appealing spot on Thursday. The right-hander is in play in both cash and guaranteed prize pool games.Despite a game score of 58 and a high-upside matchup against the Reds, Im going nowhere near Gio Gonzalez in cash games on Thursday. The lefty has surrendered five or more runs in five of his last seven starts, and most of those outings came against weak offenses (Padres, Brewers, Reds, Mets). Feel free to roll the dice with him in tournaments, though, as hes striking out more than a batter per inning and the Reds whiff at a 22 percent clip against southpaws.John Lackey is coming off his worst start of the season (7 ER in 4 1/3 innings against the Marlins), but hes in prime position to bounce back on Thursday. The veteran right-hander draws a Mets team thats striking out 23 percent of the time versus righties and put up a .299 wOBA in June. Prior to his last outing, Lackey had allowed three or fewer runs in each of his previous 10 starts, so I still trust him as a cash play.Like Lackey, Jordan Zimmermann is coming off his worst outing of the season. However, a road tilt against Tampa Bay might be too good to pass up. The Rays have done little against right-handed pitching this season and are fanning at a 25 percent clip, more than any team in the AL. Whiffs arent a big part of Zimmermanns game this season (5.7 K/9), but he owns a 7.3 career K/9 and should be able to rack up at least a handful of Ks in such a favorable matchup. Im still hesitant about Zimmermann given his recent struggles, but hes still in play as a potential SP2 if the price is right.Steven Matz, who is dealing with a bone spur in his pitching elbow, had his next start pushed back from Wednesday to Thursday. The bone spur is more of a red flag for season-long owners than DFS players, but a date with the Cubs naturally means sounding a note of caution with any cash recommendation. The Cubs are a top-five team against left-handed pitching and lead the majors in walk rate (11 percent), so the Mets lefty will have little margin for error. That said, the door is open for Matz as a high-upside tournament play. The Cubs are whiffing at a 24.3 percent clip in June, while Matz is striking out nearly a batter per inning.StreamersOne of the most enticinng matchups of the day belongs to Carlos Rodon.dddddddddddd The southpaw draws a home start against the Twins, who are one of the worst teams in the AL against left-handed pitching and strike out 25 percent of the time. For his part, Rodon is whiffing a batter per inning and has allowed more than two earned runs just once in his last seven outings. He makes for an appealing GPP play, and hes also a viable streaming option given his low ownership.Michael Pinedas 5.51 ERA is an obvious deterrent, but theres potential value here if you look for it. Not only does the 27-year-old sport a top-10 whiff rate (10.4 K/9), but hes also shown some positive trends in June, posting a 3.00 ERA over five starts. With the Rangers, a team thats below average against righty pitching, on tap, Pineda is set up to succeed on Thursday.Wei-Yin Chen and his fantasy owners caught a break, as the Miami Marlins lefty was pushed to Thursday to face the Atlanta Braves instead of facing the Detroit Tigers on Wednesday as originally scheduled. Look for Chen to take advantage, as the Braves are the second-worst team in terms of wOBA versus southpaws, plus they sport an above-average 22 percent strikeout rate in this scenario.AvoidThis probably goes without saying, but dont go chasing Chris Young and his 9.2 K/9 rate on Thursday. The right-hander owns a 7.79 ERA in June and a 9.70 ERA on the road this season. The Cardinals, who sport an MLB-best 119 wRC+ versus righties this year, wont go easy on him.HittingTommy Milone has made only six appearances (five starts) for the Twins this season, but they havent been pretty. Those six outings have resulted in a 5.33 ERA, 1.52 WHIP and five homers allowed in 27 innings. Right-handed boppers Jose Abreu and Todd Frazier should be able to take advantage, and Melky Cabrera, whos batting .340 off lefties this year, is also in play.Theres no way around it: Left-handed batters have absolutely bashed Chris Young this season. Hes faced 113 lefty hitters this year, and theyve put up a .364/.442/.867 slash line against him. With the Cardinals on the docket, Matt Carpenter is an elite play, and Brandon Moss and Matt Adams are both high-end options if theyre in the lineup.Reds lefty Brandon Finnegan has shown some good things this season. However, hes also struggled with his control (4.2 BB/9) and has allowed tons of hard contact (36 percent). On Thursday, hes running into a Nationals team that crushes left-handers (.345 wOBA and .202 ISO). There are plenty of Nationals bats worth consideration here, but Jayson Werth, who is batting .394-5-15 versus lefties this year, should be the top target. With soft-tossing lefty Dillon Overton on the hill for the As on Thursday, Buster Posey makes for an intriguing option behind the plate. Overton allowed three homers in his major league debut. Posey, meanwhile, is hitting .301/.388/.479 versus southpaws this season. Most likely to go yard: Matt CarpenterChris Young cant get left-handed hitters out, and Carpenter, who is on pace for 30 bombs, smashes righties. Lets not overthink this. Most likely to swipe a bag: Ian DesmondMichael Pineda has allowed 11 stolen bases this year (bottom 10), while catcher Brian McCann has allowed 34 baserunners to steal off him (bottom five). Desmond, who leads the Rangers with 13 swipes, must be licking his chops. ' ' '

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee put together one of its most complete performances of the season in a 3-0 shutout win over Middle Tennessee on a hot Sunday afternoon at Regal Soccer Stadium. After a tough loss to Alabama in their SEC opener on Friday night, the Volunteers were dominant in Sundays victory, controlling possession throughout the match and finishing with a commanding 24-12 shot advantage. UT got goals from Mary Alice Vignola, Hannah Wilkinson and Cali Hutson while sophomore goalkeeper Shae Yanez recorded a shutout in her first-career start. The Big Orange (4-4) started fast with six shots in the first five minutes of the game and kept their foot on the pedal throughout the half, outshooting the Blue Raiders, 11-4, in the first 45 minutes. After a few quality opportunities earlier in the game, Vignola got UT on the board in the 35th minute with a breakaway goal. The freshman from Cincinnati was sprung free on a great through ball from Rylie OKeefe and calmly slotted her shot past the keeper into the lower left corner for her first-career goal. OKeefe picked up her team-leading sixth assist on the play.Moments later, another freshman nearly gave the Vols a two-goal lead but Mady Hairstons attempt at an open goal was sent over the crossbar and UT went into the half leading 1-0.The second half looked very similar to the first, with Tennessee controlling the pace of play before putting the game out of reach with a pair of late goals from Wilkinson and Hutson.Wilkinson scored her third goal of the season and 25th of her career to move into a four-way tie for eighth on the Tennessee all-time goals list with Mick Imgram, Kendyl Michner and Keeley Dowling. Wilkinson corralled a long pass from Emily Morrow down the left side and beat Middle Tennessee keeper Sydney Chalcraft with a shot from just inside the box to give the Vols a 2-0 lead.Hutson, a senior from Fairfax, Va., capped off the scoring with a great individual effort in the 88th minute, beating Chalcraft with a strike to the upper right corner of the goal from the top of the box to give the Orange and White a three-goal cushion. It was the first goal of the season for the Hutson and just the fourth of her career.Tennessees defensive effort was much improved from Fridays loss to the Crimson Tide. A handful of players saw action on the Vols back line while Yanez made six saves to earn her first-career shutout. With the win, UT improved to 17-5-2 all-time against in-state opponents at home and 4-0 in Sunday games this season. Salera Jordan led Middle Tennessee (2-4-1) with five shots while Chalcraft made five saves in goal. The Vols jump back into SEC play on Thursday, Sept. 15 when they host Missouri in a game that will be televised on the SEC Network at 7 p.m. Comprar Air Jordan 1 Baratas . NEW YORK -- Trailing by four runs in the ninth inning, the somnambulant New York Yankees were on the verge of falling 10 games behind division-leading Baltimore in the AL East. Many in the crowd of 39,875 already had streamed out, convinced they had seen another listless loss in a season filled with them. Those who left early missed an astonishing comeback the Yankees hope sparks the turnaround that has eluded them.New Yorks first three batters reached, cutting the deficit by a run, and an electric seven-pitch span unfolded.Brian McCann hit a tying, three-run homer off Sam Dyson, Starlin Castro walked and Didi Gregorius capped the six-run inning with his two-run shot, lifting the Yankees to a 9-7 win over the Texas Rangers, the team with American Leagues best record.Probably the biggest win of the year for us, Alex Rodriguez said.New York trailed 7-2 Wednesday night and had a 1.2 percent win probability, according to Fangraphs, before McCanns solo homer with one out in the eighth off Cesar Ramos. McCann, bothered by patellar tendinitis, grabbed his left knee while rounding first and limped as he circled the bases.Matt Bush came in and escaped a two-on jam, and the 30-year-old rookie, seeking his first big league save, was left in for the ninth.Win probability was up to only 1.8 percent before Rob Refsnyder singled leading off the ninth. Jacoby Ellsbury followed with a walk, and Dyson (1-2) relieved.New York had been 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position before Brett Gardner singled, and Refsnyder came home when center fielder Ian Desmond bobbled the ball for an error. After Rodriguez lined out, McCann lined a 97 mph, 1-0 fastball on the inside of the plate above the knees and sent it about six rows deep into the right-field seats. Castro walked on five pitches, and Gregorius drove Dysons first offering, an outside changeup at the knees, into the first row above the right-field scoreboard, where the ball ricocheted off a fans glove and back onto the field.I didnt know it was gone like right away. After I stepped on first, thats when I saw it, Gregorius said. I didnt smile because I didnt want to smile, but as soon as I rounded third, see all the guys there, everybody cheering, I had to smile right there. It was the first game-ending homer of Gregorius career; he said his only other one was for the Netherlands national team in October 2010 against Taiwan in the Intercontinental Cup.Threw some quality pitches down in the zone and they got hit. Thats the end of it, saiid Dyson, who blew a save for the second time in 18 chances.dddddddddddd I kind of came in and let everybody down.New York (38-39), which has never been more than two games above .500 this year, had lost the series opener, wasting a ninth-inning lead after a 3 1/2-hour rain delay in a game that ended at 2:44 a.m. Cole Hamels shut down the Yankees on Tuesday, extending their losing streak to three.Theres a sense of urgency, manager Joe Girardi said before the game. As days tick away, you start to run out of time, and you dont want to bury yourself.Texas opened a 5-1 lead in the third against Masahiro Tanaka when Nomar Mazara, a 21-year-old rookie who is the youngest position player in the majors, hit a three-run double and scored on Prince Fielders single off a diving Refsnyder at first.Rougned Odor added his 15th homer in the sixth, an opposite-field drive to left, and Adrian Beltre hit an opposite-field homer to right in the eighth off Luis Cessa (1-0), who allowed one run in three innings for his first big league win.Chase Headley had homered in the second against Nick Martinez, who played college ball in the Bronx with Fordham, and had a sacrifice fly in the sixth off Ramos. The drama was yet to come. New York had not won this year when trailing after eight innings. It can be huge, McCann said. We dug ourselves a hole early in April, and were getting out of it right now.Gregorius hoped the comeback was just a prelude.I would say the biggest is yet to come, he said.RARE FEATSBefore McCann, the previous Yankees player to homer in the eighth and ninth innings of a game was Tony Clark in 2004, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. ... The Yankees had not won when trailing by four runs in the ninth inning or later since beating Oakland 10-9 on Sept. 22, 2012, when they allowed four runs in the 13th, tied the score in the bottom half and prevailed 10-9 in the 14th.TRAINERS ROOMYankees: After leaving Tuesdays game in the first inning with a tight right hamstring, Carlos Beltran probably wont be available through at least Thursday, according to Girardi.UP NEXTYankees RHP Michael Pineda (3-7) starts Thursdays series finale against RHP A.J. Griffin (3-0). Pineda is 1-1 with a 3.00 ERA in his last four starts. Griffin returned from a stint on the DL caused by shoulder soreness and allowed two runs over 4 1/3 innings against Boston last Saturday. ' ' '

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Another week, another missed game for Sam Shields. The Green Bay Packers cornerback has been in the concussion protocol for nearly a month after the blow to the head he suffered in the season opener at Jacksonville and was not cleared to play in Sunday nights game against the New York Giants.I had a chance to visit with Sam, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. Hes going through the process. Hes making some improvement. He will not be available this week.Theres growing concern about Shields future given that this was his fourth concussion in the past six years.?The concern exists even though ESPNs Adam Schefter reported last month that Shields intends to play again this season. His latest concussion was his second in less than nine months. AMES, Iowa -- West Virginia blew its shot at the Big 12 title when it lost by four touchdowns to Oklahoma last week. The 19th-ranked Mountaineers still have plenty left to play for -- including their best season in the Big 12. West Virginia (8-2, 5-2, No. 18 CFP) has never won more than eight games since joining the league, and a win over Iowa State (3-8, 2-6) on Saturday would accomplish that goal.We lost to a top 10 team, so thats just what happened, West Virginia coach Dana Holgorsen said. Weve had a great year. No one can take that away from us. Not going to let, not going to tolerate people talking about how we didnt do this or didnt do that.Still, the Mountaineers know that beating the Cyclones and Baylor next to close out the regular season would reassure a fan base thats suddenly anxious again. But Iowa State isnt the lightweight it was just two months ago. The Cyclones have won two in a row, including a 66-10 drubbing of Texas Tech last week that included a five-touchdown performance from quarterback Joel Lanning -- all on the ground.Iowa State also has one of the Big 12s best secondaries, ranking second in both yards allowed per game and yards allowed per attempt. The Cyclones can be leaky in stopping the run, though, a weakness the Mountaineers will no doubt look to exploit behind Justin Crawford and Rushel Shell III.Here are some of the story lines to follow as West Virginia and Iowa State prepare to meet for the fifth time:IMPROVING IOWA STATEEven though the Cyclones have eight losses, many of them turned out to be close games. Iowa State finally got its first Big 12 win against Kansas two weeks ago, and that appears to have sparked something within the program. The Cyclones thrashed the Red Raiders as a home underdog, defying the point spread by a staggering 60 points.Youve got to lay a great foundation, Iowa State first-year coach Matt Campbell said. To play some of your best football in November says a lot about the kids in our program, to be honest with you, because with our record and some of the tough losses that we had ... it would have been real easy for our kids to fold the tent.CRAWFORDS DAYWest Virginias loss to Oklahoma certainly wasnt Crawfords fault. He rushed for 331 yards, the third-most in school history, with five carries of at least 36 yards.Im sure hes going to continue to get better just as everyone does who has his work ethic and characteristics, West Virginia quarterback Skyler Howard said of Crawford.PARKED IN AS THE STARTERSLannings record-tying performance overshadowed a fantastic effort by Jacob Park, the player who took his starting spot. Park threw for 285 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Texas Tech on 14 of 18 passing. You see his confidence growing. Hes got a really good arm, Campbell said.THE NUMBERSThat West Virginia is third in the Big 12 standings is a tribute to its defense. The Mountaineers are eighth in the league in scoring offense, but their 5.4 yards allowed per play is second-best behind Baylor. ... Iowa State kicker Cole Netten has hit 20 of his last 21 field goal tries dating back to last season. ... The Cyclones are averaging close to 31 points in Big 12 games, which is their highest since the league was formed in 1996.HE SAID ITThere arent too many West Virginia teams that have finished 11-2. Our plan is, our goal is, we want to win out and just send our seniors out with a bang, West Virginia safety Jarrod Harper said.---More AP college football at www.collegefootball.ap.org Wholesale Air Jordan 3 . -- Kyrie Irvings last-minute 3-pointer helped seal another victory for Cleveland -- and the Cavaliers longest winning streak since LeBron James left. Doug Armstrong was willing to do anything to keep David Backes, but he wouldnt do long term. The St. Louis Blues general manager said goodbye to the teams captain for the past five seasons, who left to sign with the Boston Bruins, and made some complementary moves on the first day of NHL free agency.Armstrong wasnt willing to get close to the $30 million, five-year deal Backes got from the Bruins and said hell be sorely missed.I had no problem bringing David Backes back and I wish we could have, Armstrong said on a conference call Friday. I wasnt comfortable on the term. To Davids credit, he found a team that was comfortable.Backes said there wasnt an agreement on term or on dollars and came to grips with leaving the Blues, with whom he spent the first 10 years of his career. The Blues had to move on quickly and did so by signing 28-year-old winger David Perron and shoring up their goaltending situation.St. Louis signed Perron to a $7.5 million, two-year deal, and hell play a role in replacing right wing Troy Brouwer, who left for an $18 million, four-year deal with the Calgary Flames. Perron returns to the team that drafted him 26th overall in 2007.Hes coming back as a much more mature player on and off the ice, Armstrong said. We view him as certainly a player that can play in the top nine. Hes versatile -- he can play left wing or right wing. It gives the coach some options.Perron had 12 goals and 24 assists with the Pittsburgh Penguins and Anaheim Ducks last season and has 141 goals and 191 assists in 570 NHL games. Hell count $3.75 million against the cap for the next twoo seasons.ddddddddddddThe Blues also signed goaltender Jake Allen to a $17.4 million, four-year extension that begins with the 2017-18 season. Armstrong knew hed be able to sign Allen after trading goalie Brian Elliott to the Flames at the draft.Everyone was on the feeling that its Jakes team now, its Jakes turn and it made it easy, Armstrong said. We really think that Jake is going to be a real good player, and he wants the ball and hes got it now.Allens backup will be 30-year-old Carter Hutton, who had been stuck behind All-Star Pekka Rinne in Nashville. Hutton signed a two-year deal worth $2.25 million.A lot like Brian Elliott (Hutton is) a great competitor and a great teammate, Armstrong said. Someone that is looking to push Jake but also understands that hes a mentor and a solid partner. There was a lot of positives with bringing him in. it just seemed like the proper guy that had the experience that Jake can lean on.Without Backes, Brouwer and Elliott, the Blues are weaker than they were when they lost to the San Jose Sharks in the Western Conference final. But Armstrong expects forward Vladimir Sobotka to return from the KHL for next season and hopes the core led by Vladimir Tarasenko, Alex Pietrangelo and Jaden Schwartz continues to improve. Were a younger team, were a different team and were going to be putting a lot of responsibility on the younger players, Armstrong said.---Follow Stephen Whyno on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/SWhyno ' ' '

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- New York Jets right tackle Breno Giacomini and defensive tackle Steve McLendon were among six players ruled out Friday for the game at San Francisco on Sunday.Linebacker Lorenzo Mauldin, wide receiver Jalin Marshall, cornerback Antonio Allen and running back Khiry Robinson also will not play because of injuries. Defensive end Muhammad Wilkerson is questionable to play with an injured ankle.Giacomini is dealing with back, shoulder and calf ailments -- although he says the calf is the main issue. Brent Qvale will start in his place.I feel pretty banged up, said Giacomini, who missed training camp and the first seven games with a back strain. This is my worst year, as far as injuries, he said. I know what reality is, so we know what everything is inside this building and were a close-knit group. But, perhaps the most glaring sign of trouble within came Sunday, when Bowles benched star defensive linemen Muhammad Wilkerson and Sheldon Richardson for the first quarter of New Yorks 27-23 loss at Miami .Bowles repeated Monday that it was a coachs decision, adding that non-injury and non-football issues are kept in-house. He also declined to say whether tardiness is an issue with the two. However, reports emerged that both Wilkerson and Richardson were disciplined for being late to a team meeting. NJ.com reported that the two have been late or no-showed more than once. NFL Network reported that Wilkerson missed a walkthrough and a defensive meeting at which his birthday was being celebrated -- complete with a cake -- the day before the game against Baltimore last month. Wilkerson did not play in that game because of an ailing ankle. Those are reports, Bowles said. Those things are handled in-house and I know how we handle things in here, and everybody is accountable for their actions. We handle things in here as we handle them, and Im perfectly fine with those two (players) commitments. When asked what makes him satisfied with both Wilkerson and Richardson, Bowles said simply: They put in work. They put in a lot of work.A sideline exchange between wide receiver Brandon Marshall and quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick appeared to get a bit heated, although both downplayed it after the game. Bowles did the same, brushing aside the notion that it was another example of a team tearing apart. We had more turmoil going last year when we won four or five in a row, Bowles said. This year is normal. Brandon and Fitz talk on the sideline all the time. Thats just football talk. That goes without saying. And, Mo and Sheldon are fine.On Monday, Marshall said it was business as usual amongg the players, with the focus on moving forward to their next game at home against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.ddddddddddddHe said he feels good about the Jets locker room, calling it one of the best Ive been in. He was lukewarm, however, when asked if he thought every player was committed to a common goal. You never know, he said. Its the National Football League. There are so many different personalities in the room. I love what Coach (Marc) Trestman said when he first got hired in Chicago, one of his first team meetings, he said: We dont need all. We just need the right ones.Tackle Ben Ijalana thinks the Jets have those guys, along with the right approach.Everyone is focused on trying to right the ship and were playing a game at home, he said. Were not trying to lull down. Were just trying to get back on the right track, continue to get these wins going. The Jets are uncertain whether Fitzpatrick will start because of a sprained left knee , and some fans and media says New York should go with second-year quarterback Bryce Petty regardless. Its expected, Marshall said of the perception that the Jets are a team in chaos. This is what happens, usually, when you lose. ... Were sitting at 3-6, were disappointed in our play, disappointed in ourselves. And the players arent alone.Bowles has taken his share of the blame, too, and had missteps in his play calls throughout the season.I havent done a good job, he said. Were 3-6. It speaks for itself. I can do a lot better job of coaching.Despite all that, though, Bowles insisted he has total control of his team.Completely, yes, he said. I know me and I know how I address the team and I know how the team responds. I have no issues with that.Penalties are a big problem, with 10 called in the game against the Dolphins. Perhaps none was as glaring as the offsides call on Antonio Allen, whose mistake on a kickoff resulted in a re-kick -- and Kenyan Drake returned it 96 yards for the go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter. We dont finish, Ijalana said. I would say its a combination of not finishing and sometimes starting slow. In this league, those things get you in trouble. Its very hard to win games like that.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '

The Winnipeg Goldeyes showed no mercy on Tuesday night. In fact, the Fish scored 20 runs and pounded out 31 hits, as they ripped a doubleheader away from the Lincoln Saltdogs. In front of a crowd of 4,595, the Goldeyes beat the Saltdogs 8-0 in the opening seven-inning game and then put up nine runs on a single-inning, record-tying 11 hits, as they blasted Lincoln 12-2 in the night cap. Edgar Osuna pitched a complete-game masterpiece in Game 1, while newcomer Matt Jackson threw 5 1/3 solid innings, allowing only two runs on eight scattered hits, to record his first win as a Goldeye. With the Twin Bill win, the Goldeyes took the first two games of a four-game series with Lincoln. It was also Winnipegs fourth and fifth straight wins, as the Fish improved to 36-32. Lincoln fell to 36-34 on the season. Winnipeg pulled to within three games of Gary in the Wild Card race and just 5 1/2 games of Fargo in the race for first in the American Associations North Division. Winnipeg has 32 games left to play. "It was a very good night for the club," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "We had some pretty good offence for five hours. Im happy for the guys tonight. It was one of the best days weve had all season. The guys were hitting line drives all over the place." In the second game of the double dip, Lincoln opened the scoring in the first on a solo homer by David Espinosa, but Winnipeg tied it in the second, as Ryan Scoma singled, stole second and scored on a base hit by Fehlandt Lentini. Winnipeg made it 3-1 in the third as Kevin Moesquit walked and Amos Ramon hit a two-run bomb over the left field wall. In the top of the fifth, Espinosa hit his second solo homer of the game to make it 3-2, but in the bottom of the fifth, the roof fell in on Lincoln. Tyler Graham singled, Ramon singled, Ray Sadler doubled in Graham and Scoma doubled home Ramon and Sadler. Then Casey Haerther singled, but was erased at second base on a ground ball to third by Josh Mazzola. Mazzola was safe at first on a fielders choice. Lentini then singled and Luis Alen hit a majestic three-run homer over the left field fence. Right behind Alen, Moesquit hit the second back-to-back home run of the night -- a line drive over the left field wall. That made it 11-2. Before the inning ended, Ramon doubled and Sadler singled him home. Scoma then singled to tie the club record for hits in an inning with the 11th. "You dont see a nine-run inning very often," said Forney. "But hitting is contagious and we took advantage of some young pitchers who made some mistakes." It was a hitters smorgasbord. Graham went two-for-four with a run scored; Ramon went four-for-four with two singles, a double, a home run, three runs scored and two RBI; Sadler was two-for-four with a run scored and two RBI; Scoma was three-for-four with two runs scored and two RBI; Lentini was two-for-four with a runs scored and a run batted in; Alen had a three-run bomb in four trips; and Moesquit had a solo shot and a walk, two runs scored and an RBI in four trips to the plate. Jackson (1-0, 3.38 ERA) got the win for Winnipeg while starter Travis Parker (2-2, 5.66 ERA), who allowed seven runs on 11 hits, suffered the loss for Lincoln. "Matt Jackson had a helluva debut for us," said Forney. "He hasnt pitched in about a week to 10 days, but he responded. He gave us a very good start tonight. He did a great job, he really did." In Game 1, Osuna fired a three-hit shutout to earn his third win of the season. Meanwhile, Casey Haerther hit a three-run homer while Josh Mazzola and Ray Sadler added solo blasts as the Goldeyes built a 4-0 lead in the third inning and coasted. Winnipeg opened the scoring in the third as Sadler led off with a double, Ryan Scoma walked and Haerther homered. Mazzola followed Haerther with a back-to-backer as he lofted a pitch from starter Stephen Bougher into the trees across Waterfront Dr. Sadler hit a solo shot, his team-leading 15th of the year, to lead off the fourth. That gave the Fish a 5-0 advantage. Then, in the fifth, Winnipeg added three more. Fehlandt Lentini led off with a single, Luis Alen doubled and Kevin Moesquit singled to drive home Lentini. Tyler Graham beat out an infield single to score Alen, reached second on a ground out by Amos Ramon and then scored on a single by Sadler. Sadler was sensational at the plate, going four-for-four with two singles, a double, a home run, two runs scored and two driven in. Mazzola was pretty good himself, going three-for-four with an RBI and a run scored. Haerther had a three-run homer and leadoff man Tyler Graham went two-for-three with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Osuna (3-1, 1.46) pitched brilliantly and got the win. Bougher (2-5, 4.43) suffered the loss. Osuna allowed three hits and struck out seven, including the side in the fifth. The Goldeyes and Saltdogs will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. at Shaw Park. Justin Garcia (5-4, 5.33 ERA) will get the start for Winnipeg, while Pete Parise (7-5, 3.55 ERA) will take to the bump for Lincoln. Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres scored second-half goals to seal a fourth straight victory for Chelsea, which climbed above Arsenal and Manchester City in the standings ahead of their games on Monday and Sunday respectively. PORTLAND, Ore. -- With two goals in the first 11 minutes, the Galaxy stole a 2-1 victory in Portland.Robbie Keane and Gyasi Zardes each scored for Los Angeles to put an end to the Timbers nine-game undefeated streak before a national TV audience.Zarek Valentin scored for the Timbers, who were stung when they lost veteran defender Nat Borchers to what appeared to be a left ankle injury late in the first half. Borchers was a key piece to the Timbers team that won the MLS Cup last season. It was the Galaxys fourth straight victory in Major League Soccer play, and fifth overall. Los Angeles (9-3-8) is third in the Western Conference, while Portland (7-7-8) is in sixth.Neither team added to the score in the second half.We definitely wanted to come out aggressive and I thought we did that. We didnt know what the second half had in hand, but the sun came out, turf got hotter. But I thought the substitutions were phenomenal. The guys that came on were just great and amazing and it worked well for us, Zardes said. The Timbers were already without defender Liam Ridgewell, who has a strained right calf and will also miss the MLS All-Star Game against Arsenal next week in San Jose. The Galaxy were without defender Ashley Cole because of a sore hamstring, and midfielder Steven Gerrard, who has a leg injury. The Galaxy went ahead early with Keanes easy tap in off Giovani dos Santos cross in the seventh minute. It was Keanes seventh goal in 10 overall matches this season.Los Angeles extended the lead to 2-0 in the 11th minute on Zardes bouncing header. It took us a while to get going, and we didnt make the plays we needed, Portland goalkeeper Jake Gleeson said. The slow start was a letdown for the Timbers, who were coming off a big 3-1 victory over rival Seattle last Sunday. But Portland narrowed it to 2-1 before the end of the half with Zarek Valentins a hard shot from atop the box in the 41st minute. It was his firstt goal of the season.ddddddddddddive them credit, they pushed for the goal. I think our biggest mistake in the game was conceding a goal at the end of the first half. We could have been in position to, I wouldnt say sail through that game, but deal with it a little bit better in the second half, Galaxy coach Bruce Arena said.A few moments later Portland suffered a major blow when Borchers was injured. It did not appear that the veteran defender was hurt by contact.Borchers could not stand after he was treated on the field and had to be stretchered off. Arena appeared to wish him well as he was carried to the locker room.Portland coach Caleb Porter said after the game he had no update on Borchers condition.Portlands early struggles on defense and the loss of Borchers came as rumors swirled concerning the Timbers interest in former Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor, who was at the match.Portlands Darlington Nagbe got a good chance with a clear shot in the 86th minute but the ball sailed just over the crossbar. The Timbers also got a free kick late but was unable to score. The last time the two teams met the Galaxy knocked the Timbers out of the U.S. Open Cup with a 1-0 victory at Providence Park in late June. Los Angeles has advanced to the semifinals of the competition, hosting FC Dallas at StubHub Center on Aug. 10.There was bad blood between the two teams stemming from a match earlier this year, during which Nigel de Jong tackled Nagbe.Nagbe, who has also been playing with the U.S. national team, sprained his ankle. De Jong was later given a three-game suspension by the league for the hit.The sellout crowd at Providence Park loudly booed de Jong when the lineups were announced before Saturdays match. It was the first soccer match for ESPNs SportsCenter On The Road. CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Indians, with their newly-configured bullpen, will host the Minnesota Twins on Tuesday night in the second game of their four-game series. The Twins won game one of the series Monday night as they continued their inexplicable dominance of the Indians.Minnesota, which is in last place in the American League Central, is 6-4 versus first-place Cleveland, and 6-21 against all the other division opponents.Tuesday nights pitching matchup will feature Clevelands Carlos Carrasco (7-4, 2.45) vs. Minnesotas Kyle Gibson (3-6, 4.54).It will be the 100th start of Carrascos career, and his 11th against the Twins. He is 2-5 with a 4.02 ERA in those 11 starts. Gibson is 2/3 with a 5.80 ERA in eight career starts against Cleveland. That includes a 6-1 loss on July 17 at Target Field in which Gibson gave up four runs and 10 hits. The Indians acquired left-hander Andrew Miller from the New York Yankees in a trade on Sunday that significantly strengthened the back of the Indians bullpen. Miller has experience as both a closer and a setup man. The Indians have closer Cody Allen, who has 20 saves this year and 78 saves over the last three years. So who will be the Indians closer going forward? That will be determined by how each given game unfolds. Manager Terry Francona met with both relievers on Monday, and the decision was made to let the game dictate who pitches the eighth inning and who pitches the ninth. If the matchups in the eighth inning favor a left-handed pitcher, Miller will pitch the eighth and Allen the ninth. If the matchups in the eighth favor a right-handed pitcher, Allen will pitch that inning and Miller the ninth. Were going to try to leverage both of them the best we can, Francona said. Weve got a guy in Andrew Miller who is a rare breed. Hes comfortable in any role. And Cody is willing to do whatever is best to help us win.The other change for the Indians is at third base. On Monday, third baseman Juan Uribe was designated for assignment. Jose Ramirez, who has played mostly left field and some third base this year, will replace Uribe as the everyday third baseman. The Twins, who have won four of their last five games, are riding a rejuvenated offense in recent games. They have won four of their last five games, and in the four wins they scored 26 runs. In Mondays 12-5 win over Cleveland, the Twins exploded for 19 hits, including three doubles, two triples and five home runs.We had 19 hits and new could have had more. We hit a lot of balls hard, Twins manager Paul Molitor said.Much of the hard hitting came from Max Kepler, who had four hits, including three home runs, and Joe Mauer, who had four hits, including a double and a home run. Were hoping Joe gets into a run, Molitor said. Hes tweaking some things, trying to find his rhythm.Outfielder Byron Buxton did not play in Mondays game due to a sore right knee. An MRI exam done on the knee Monday was negative, and Buxton is listed as day-to-day. Cheap NFL Jerseys Authentic .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres scored second-half goals to seal a fourth straight victory for Chelsea, which climbed above Arsenal and Manchester City in the standings ahead of their games on Monday and Sunday respectively. TORONTO -- Auston Matthews checked his phone before his NHL debut and came across text messages from former teammates. It wasnt exactly encouragement. The Toronto newcomer was in their fantasy hockey lineups.Hopefully, I did all right, the 19-year-old said a day later.Fantasy hockey owners would indeed be proud. Matthews became the first player in modern NHL history to score four goals in his debut , a 5-4 overtime loss at Ottawa on Wednesday night. He scored his fourth goal with 3 seconds to go in the second period.Hes going to have great nights down the road, Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly said Thursday. But this one will be one that hell remember for a long time.It took less than 10 minutes for Matthews, the first player picked No. 1 overall by the Leafs in 31 years, to find the back of the net.The play started with two nifty dekes by 20-year-old William Nylander just inside the Ottawa zone. He danced around Senators defenseman Mark Borowiecki and then flung a pass into the middle for Matthews, his shot attempt squirting just wide of the goal. It was eventually claimed behind the net by Zach Hyman, the third member of Torontos all-rookie line.I tried to just pick it up and I saw Auston and I just threw it back in front and he was there, Hyman recounted.Matthews quickly fired a shot past Anderson steps outside the crease, Senators defender Chris Wideman just a second late in tying him up.After Ottawa scored twice in less than 2 minutes, Matthews struck again on the most eye-catching goal of the evening.Hyman took the action in from steps away like an astounded fan.Theres so many little things on that play that I think most guys cant do and he did it all in one play, the 24-year-old Hyman said. The puck was in the net pretty quick.Matthews gained control of it in the neutral zone, slipping it through the legs of a helpless Mike Hoffman. He whirled into the offensive zone and lost control of the puck briefly, Senators captain Erik Karlsson temporarily taking hold of it along the boards. Undeterred, Matthews dodged a check from Hoffman and before Karlsson, a former Norris Trophy winner, had a chance to make a play, lifted his stick, swiped the puck back and attacked the crease.Perhaps missed on first glance was the slight whack Matthews gave Karlsson on the left leg, an attempt to make the defenseman think he was coming from the left instead of the right.dddddddddddd He then got a quick shot under Andersons glove seconds before Marc Methot could drop to the ice and break up the play.Just a couple puck battles, Matthews said. I think I was able to sneak by my check there and catch Karlsson off-guard and (then) was able to just pick the puck, go in and slide it 5-hole there.Watching it unfold Hyman thought: Hes a good player.Matthews completed his hat trick 1:25 into the second period on his third shot of the game .Rielly instigated the action, veering into the offensive zone with speed before he was steered into the left corner by Ottawas defense. He nonetheless managed to thread a pass through a sea of skates to Matthews, wide open in the right faceoff circle.Rielly said he knew Matthews was there the whole time and was only able to get the pass through all that interference because of his teammates positioning. He changed his speed and he went into a good spot where I was able to get it to him, Rielly said. If he had just driven the net like most guys do I dont think it wouldve worked. But he stopped up and he made his blade available and thats what happened.Matthews fourth and fifth shot attempts were denied, but it was evident a fourth goal was coming and indeed it arrived in the waning moments of the second period. With 9.7 seconds left and the score tied 3-3, Jake Gardiner lofted an outlet from the Toronto zone past a leaping Brassard. Matthews snatched it up near center ice, found Nylander and then took off to the front of the net. Nylander slid a pass just under the stick of Wideman, the only defenseman back for Ottawa.I just put it there and then he put it in, Nylander said.It was the finishing touch on history.Matthews said he would give the four pucks from his debut to his mother, Ema.I think just playing in your first NHL game you know its going to be a special night, said Matthews, already looking ahead to Torontos home opener against Boston on Saturday night. Just going out and there and getting your first taste of the NHL and living your dream right there its pretty special. ' ' '

SAN FRANCISCO -- That visible circle in the back pockets of big leaguers -- typically a sure sign of smokeless tobacco -- might be far less common next season.Players new to the majors wont be able to dip next year without risk of penalty, a provision under baseballs tentative five-year labor agreement reached late Wednesday.I think the smokeless tobacco ban is both logical and I am thankful, Los Angeles Angels reliever Huston Street said in an email to The Associated Press on Thursday night. I understand choice, but choosing to die sooner is not one I support. It is possible more than the 12 current major league cities with laws either in place or headed that way will have tobacco bans by the start of the 2017 season. Thats what many health experts and advocates in the prevention efforts are hoping for, at least, though they certainly would have preferred a tobacco ban across the board for baseball to set an example for youth and the sports future. The new collective bargaining agreement reached last night by Major League Baseball owners and players takes a major step forward in removing tobacco from the game by prohibiting all new MLB players from using smokeless tobacco, like chew, dip and snuff, said Matthew L. Myers, president of the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids. Combined with the fact that 12 major league cities already have prohibitions on tobacco use at their baseball parks by all players and team personnel, baseball is now on a clear path to become tobacco-free in the very near future. While we had hoped for a complete prohibition on smokeless tobacco in baseball in the new agreement, this is a major step forward and represents the first time the players and owners have a made a clear commitment to fully eliminating smokeless tobacco use in baseball, he said.Right-hander Cal Quantrill , a first-round draft pick by the Padres this year taken No. 8 overall out of Stanford, isnt sure what the ban will mean for prospects working their way toward the top. The son of former big league pitcher Paul Quantrill, Cal Quantrill doesnt chew. Its hard to say if there is less dipping, but I would say people definitely are more aware of the consequences, said Quantrill, who pitched between the rookie level and A-ball in 2016.With cancer concerns at the forefront since Hall of Famer Tony Gwynns June 2014 death at age 54 from salivary gland cancer complications following years of dipping, the dangers of long-term tobacco use have become a national issue for the national pastime. Gwynns family filed a wrongful death lawsuit earlier this year against the tobacco industry.Sounds like a good start, Giants head athletic trainer Dave Groeschner said of the ban. Those players should be used to it as that is already in place in the minor leagues.Five years ago, San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy used a hypnotist to quit chewing tobacco. A close friend and old teammate of Gwynns, he has dipped off and on since, facing a constant battle of trying to end the decades-old habit dating to his playing days.White Sox ace Chris Sale quit chewing after Gwynn died .I would think that there would be a lot less in the near future, Giants Gold Glove shortstop Brandon Crawford said in an email. For the last five seasons, big league players were prohibited from carrying tobacco products, including tins and packages, onto the field when fans were in the ballpark. But in the clubhouses, indoor batting cages and other out-of-sight spots, the tell-tale signs were there. This reported agreement between Major League Baseball and its Players Association is a victory for the health of new professional players and young players all around the nation who look up to them as role models, said Frank Pallone Jr., D-N.J., ranking member of the House committee on Energy and Commerce. The devastating health effects of chewing tobacco are well kno
