OAKLAND, Calif. -- Marcus Semien rounded third base on Josh Reddicks 10th-inning infield single, and Reddicks first thought was disbelief. Then Semien slid home for the game-ending run not long after Oakland wasted a big opportunity in the ninth.Semien scored from second base on Reddicks two-out infield single to lift the As to a 4-3 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. It was a really good game for us, manager Bob Melvin said. There was a lot of fight tonight, for sure. A lot of good things transpired. The As rallied from three runs down and trailed 3-2 before Coco Crisps tying double off Astros closer Will Harris in the ninth. After the Astros stranded the bases loaded in the top of the 10th, Reddick won it with the sixth walkoff hit of his career.Semien singled with two outs off Pat Neshek (2-2) and stole second. Yonder Alonso walked before Reddick singled to deep shortstop. Houstons Carlos Correa fielded the ball cleanly but threw wide of home as Semien slid safely in with the winning run.I was wondering why he was going and being sent in the first place, Reddick said of Semien. Then I saw the throw and I was like `Thank you, thank you, thank you. I think hed agree he had no business going. But sometimes you have to push the issue, and it worked.Crisp finished with two hits while Ryon Healy added two hits and two RBI for the As. Oakland has won four of five since the All-Star break.Jose Altuve matched his career-high with four hits while George Springer hit his career-high 21st home run for the Astros.Definitely a winnable game, Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. Really this game was more about us not being able to close the game out. Late in the game it never felt like we had enough runs and it turned out we didnt.Mark Rzepczynski (1-0) got the last out in the top of the 10th for the win.Houston starter Dallas Keuchel took a shutout into the seventh before giving up consecutive one-out hits to Billy Butler and Jake Smolinksi. Healy followed with a two-run double off reliever Ken Giles to pull the As to 3-2.Oakland tied the game in the ninth with back-to-back doubles by Stephen Vogt and Crisp. Crisp thought he had homered and slowed rounding second before getting caught in a rundown.Altuve padded his majors-leading hit total with his sixth four-hit game of the season. Houstons All-Star second baseman singled in the first, doubled and scored in the third and tripled and scored in the fifth. He struck out looking in the eighth and singled again in the 10th.Keuchel allowed two runs and five hits over 6 1/3 innings. The reigning AL Cy Young Award winner, who beat the As in his final start before the All-Star break, struck out six and walked three.A STEP FORWARDAs starter Daniel Overton, who was called up from Triple-A Nashville before the game, allowed three runs over 6 1/3 innings. The rookie left-hander struck out six and didnt walk a batter for the first time in three career starts.ROAD WARRIORAltuves three hits raised his AL-leading average to .352 and extended his road hitting streak to 18 games. The diminutive infielder has also reached safely in 34 consecutive road games, the second-longest streak in Astros history.TRAINERS ROOMAthletics: Rich Hills status remains in limbo because of a blister on the middle finger of his left hand. Hill left his most recent start Sunday after throwing just five pitches. ... RHP Andrew Triggs was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised left shin. ... INF Tyler Ladendorf was optioned to Triple-A Nashville and LHP Daniel Coulombe was called up from the minors.UP NEXTAstros: RHP Doug Fister (9-6) pitches the finale Wednesday afternoon at the Coliseum and has two wins and a 1.31 ERA in three starts against Oakland this season.Athletics: RHP Daniel Mengden makes his second start against the Astros this season. He allowed six runs over 4 2/3 innings but took a no-decision in Houston on July 8. Fake Air Max . The 43-year-old closer, in his 19th and final big league season, has said hed like to play the outfield. Yankees manager Joe Girardi says hes thinking about allowing Rivera to do it this weekend, when the Yankees finish their season with a three-game series at the Houston Astros. Cheap Real Air Max . Those lessons were more than enough to overwhelm the Utah Jazz. Lou Williams scored 25 points and the Hawks continued their offensive upswing as they rolled to an easy 118-85 victory over the Jazz on Friday night, winning their third straight and for the fourth time in five games. https://www.airmaxchina.us/ . The formidable trio of Canadian receivers -- individually known as Chris Getzlaf, Rob Bagg and Andy Fantuz -- will share the field at Mosaic Stadium one more time on Sunday. Air Max From China .C. -- When North Carolina freshman Ryan Switzer reported to training camp in August he was a little miffed to learn he was third on the depth chart at punt returner. Replica Air Max . -- Devin Hester is done returning kicks in Chicago. AUBURN, Ala. -- Auburn coach Gus Malzahns puzzling quarterback rotation against Clemson didnt work out at all like he had hoped. The offense sputtered and gave away chance after chance to topple one of the best teams in the nation. For the Tigers second game against Arkansas State, that plan was scrapped. Malzahn gave Sean White the reins, and White -- along with the rest of the Auburn offense -- took advantage. He threw for 244 yards and three touchdowns on 17-of-23 passing, and the Tigers picked up 462 yards on the ground en route to a 51-14 demolition of Arkansas State on Saturday night. The 706 total yards Auburn gained is the second-highest in school history, behind only the 712 the Tigers racked up against Western Carolina in 2013.We came out and we looked like an Auburn offense for the first time, Malzahn said. Just looking at it, without looking at the film, I can tell they definitely improved.Kerryon Johnson and Kamryn Pettway each tallied over 100 yards on the ground, the first time two Auburn players have eclipsed the century mark in a game since 2014.Johnson added a pair of touchdowns, the first of which was a dazzling, cross-field, electrifying run that included a hurdle over an Arkansas State defender and a dive across the pylon.KJ, hes got some unique abilities, Malzahn said. He can do some things that can kind of wow you at times, and of course, that was really impressive. There were some good blocks, too, but he really made something out of nothing on that one. That was one of a handful plays that elicited flashbacks to the explosive Auburn offense of 2013 and 2014. The most impressive one, however, came from a freshman.Receiver Kyle Davis hauled in a falling, one-handed catch that bore a striking resemblance to New York Giants receiver Odell Beckhams simiilar catch, one that has become iconic.ddddddddddddrkansas State managed to scrape across a pair of touchdowns to go with the Red Wolves 326 total yards, but they couldnt find much room to maneuver against a vastly improved Auburn defense. We felt like if we could hang close, stay close, keep it a game, that potentially third or fourth quarter some of our quickness out in space might give us a chance to be in the mix, said Arkansas State coach Blake Anderson. You had to make it a 60-minute game and the second quarter just got away from us, and at that point it just not the same conversation anymore. The Tigers tacked on points in 10 of their 12 drives, and at one point scored a touchdown on five consecutive possessions. One of those touchdowns came on a fake field goal, which holder Tyler Stovall and kicker Daniel Carlson executed to perfection.THE TAKEAWAYAuburn rights the ship and quiets steadily rising concerns about the Tigers offensive woes and, perhaps more importantly, Malzahns job security.Arkansas States troubles in the secondary -- and the defense as a whole -- continue to plague the Red Wolves, who have now been outscored 82-24 in their first two games this season.POLL IMPLICATIONSWith the way SEC teams have been struggling against inferior opponents, a wire-to-wire victory for Auburn might be enough to bump them into the Top 25.QUOTABLEIt was good to go out there and ball out with my teammates, said Auburn defensive end Carl Lawson. Im glad we got a team win today. We need to keep improving, but Im so happy we got a win for Auburn today.UP NEXTAuburn hosts No. 20 Texas A&M on Saturday.Arkansas State travels to Utah State on Friday. ' ' '

CARMEL, Ind. -- Powerful off the tee and relentless with the putter, Dustin Johnson didnt give anyone much of a chance Sunday by closing with a 5-under 67 to win the BMW Championship by three shots and move to the top of the FedEx Cup.Johnson won for the third time in his last eight tournaments dating to his first major at the U.S. Open, and this might have been his most complete performance.Paul Casey did just about everything he could, including two early birdies for two-shot swings that erased a four-shot deficit in two holes. Johnson answered with a pair of birdies and he was on his way. Casey made a 25-foot eagle putt on the 15th hole to get within one shot, but that lasted only as long as it took Johnson to make an 18-foot eagle putt on top of him to keep the margin at three shots.Casey was runner-up in his second straight FedEx Cup playoff event, losing to Rory McIlroy a week ago. His consolation, along with $1,836,000 in those weeks, was the No. 5 seed at the Tour Championship in two weeks. That means he only has to win at East Lake to capture the $10 million bonus.Rickie Fowler wont have any chance at all.Fowler, who started the week at No. 22 in the FedEx Cup, closed with a 71 and finished 59th at Crooked Stick. He was bumped out of the top 10 by the smallest margin in the 10-year history of the FedEx Cup -- 0.57 points behind Charl Schwartzel, who closed with a 64.The timing is particularly bad for Fowler because Davis Love III makes three of his captains picks for the Ryder Cup on Monday, with another one right after the Tour Championship. Fowler wont have another chance to audition, though he might get picked on Monday, anyway.Fowlers hopes came down to J.B. Holmes in a finish that had nothing to do with the trophy. Fowler would have made it to the Tour Championship if Holmes made either a birdie or a bogey. Holmes would have been eliminated with a bogey. He drilled it down the middle of the fairway, hit the green, lagged a 40-foot putt to 4 feet and made it for par for a 74.Holmes tied for fourth, key for him because the big hitter from Kentucky also needs a captains pick to play in the Ryder Cup. Holmes finished at No. 10 in the Ryder Cup standings, one spot ahead of Fowler.Roberto Castro holed out for eagle from the seventh fairway on his way to a 67 to finish alone in third, sending the Georgia Tech grad and Atlanta resident home to play in the Tour Championship.DAP CHAMPIONSHIPBEACHWOOD, Ohio -- Bryson DeChambeau won the Web.com Tour Finals-opening DAP Championship to wrap up a PGA Tour card for next season. The 22-year-old former SMU player beat Andres Gonzales with a 5-foot par putt on the second hole of a playoff at Canterbury Golf Club. DeChambeau and Gonzales each birdied the 18th on the first extra trip down the par-4 hole, eliminating Nicholas Lindheim and Argentinas Julian Etulain.DeChambeau shot a 1-over 71 to match Gonzales (68), Lindheim (66) and Etulain (67) at 7-under 273.DeChambeau earned $180,000. The 2015 NCAA and U.S. Amateur champion got into the field as a non-member with enough PGA Tour money to have placed in the top 200 in the FedEx Cup had he been eligible. The four-event series features the top 75 players from the Web.com Tour money list, Nos. 126-200 in the PGA Tours FedEx Cup standings and some non-members such as DeChambeau. The top 25 players on the Web.com Tour regular-season money list earned PGA Tour cards. They are competing against each other for tour priority, with regular-season earnings counting in their totals. The other players are fighting for 25 cards based on series earnings.KLM OPENSPIJK, Netherlands -- Dutchman Joost Luiten won his national open for the second time, matching the course record with an 8-under 63 for a three-stroke victory in the KLM Open.Luiten finished at 19 under at The Dutch for his fifth European Tour title. He won the 2013 event at Kennemer. Austrias Bernd Wiesberger was second after a 65. Cheap Air Max 200 . But what about the officials? MOSCOW -- Russia accused the International Paralympic Committee of extortion Wednesday after it required Russian officials to pay for extra drug-testing following the countrys doping scandal.Russias team was banned from the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro in September after a World Anti-Doping Agency report accused some of the countrys leading sports officials of covering up hundreds of failed drug tests. The IPC published a list of conditions this week that Russia must fulfill in order to be reinstated in time for the 2018 Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, including fees totaling 575,000 euros ($608,000) to cover the significant costs resulting from the increased (drug) testing of Russian athletes.Russian Deputy Prime Minister Vitaly Mutko said the financial issues are exaggerated, and Id even call them extortion. He also opposeed a demand that Russian Paralympic chiefs cut ties with the government.ddddddddddddThe IPC officials think that theres no one above them but their own conscience, Mutko said in comments to state news agency Tass. What does it mean that the state shouldnt be among the management? The Paralympic movement does nothing anywhere in the world without state support.Other conditions in the IPC document include increased anti-doping education for athletes and staff and a demand that the Russian Paralympic Committee must distance itself from all political/propaganda statements issued by Russian authorities.Russian Paralympic officials have said they plan to study the conditions with lawyers ahead of a meeting with the IPC. CHICAGO -- When Anthony Rizzo found out the eight-year anniversary of him being declared cancer-free fell on the same day fellow cancer survivor Jon Lester was pitching, he told Lester he was going to throw a no-hitter.He came close.Lester pitched 6 2/3 innings of no-hit ball and settled for his second complete game of the season, helping the Chicago Cubs beat the San Francisco Giants 2-1 on Friday to move a season-high 40 games over .500.It coincided with a Major League Baseball initiative that had players and umpires wearing gold sweatbands to raise awareness for childhood cancer. Its a little more special for me and Rizz, just with our foundations and what weve been through, said Lester, who overcame lymphoma a decade ago. He did say the other day I was going to throw a no-hitter on the kids strike out cancer day. It would have been pretty cool, but glad we got the win instead.Hunter Pence ended Lesters bid for a second no-hitter with a homer to left on a 1-2 changeup that cut over the plate. Brandon Crawford followed with a double, and Lester (15-4) got Eduardo Nunez to line to third. He then worked around Trevor Browns one-out double in the eighth. We ran into a very hot pitcher whos throwing the ball very well and he was on top of his game, manager Bruce Bochy said. Still, youve got to generate some offense.I will say we hit some balls had right at them, too. We couldve used a break on Nunezs ball. He just hit it right at him or right there the game is tied.Lester allowed three hits and walked two. The Cubs have won five straight to improve to 87-47. The last time they were 40 games over .500 was the end of the 1945 season. Its pretty incredible, manager Joe Maddon.David Ross and Dexter Fowler had RBI hits in the second off Albert Suarez (3-3).Pences second homer in two days ended a 12 2/3-innings hitless streak (0 for 40) for San Francisco. The Giants are a major league-worst 15-29 since the All-Star break.Lester walked Buster Posey with two outs in the first inning and followed by setting down 18 straight while getting some help.Third baseman Kris Bryant made a diving, backhand grab of Crawfords liner to lead off the fifth and Dexter Fowler made a sliding catch of Kelby Tomlinsons liner to center an inning later. Our defense has been fun to watch all year, and it makes our jobs a lot easier, Lester said. The 32-year-old Lester threw a no-hitter on May 19, 2008, for Boston against Kansas City. That came less than two years after he was diagnosed with cancer. He acknowledged he started thinking about a second one after the first inning and added, Anybody that tells you different is lying. The rookie Suarez, in his ninth start, allowed three hits with two walks and three strikeouts in five innings.Lester struck out Crawford looking with a runner on first for his fourth strikeout to end it on his 102nd pitch.I think the big thing was they were aggressive, Lester said. I was able to keep the ball down and keep the defense active today.TRAINERS ROOMGiants: C Trevor Brown (illness) started after being unavailable Thursday, allowing Posey to play 1B. TORONTO -- The 2016 World Cup of Hockey, which culminated with Canadas 2-1 victory over Europe on Thursday night, was a joint venture between the NHL and the National Hockey League Players Association, which split the events profits 50-50. ESPN.coms Pierre LeBrun sat down with NHLPA executive director Donald Fehr on Thursday night before the final game to discuss the events impact and its future.?Pierre LeBrun:?Can you share your observations so far on how the World Cup has played out?Donald Fehr: The first thing I would obviously look for is, how do the players feel? And it seems to be uniformly positive. They like the event, they like the format, they really enjoy the level of the competition and doing it in one place without having to fly around the world. So thats really good.Secondly, I think the public acceptance of the quality of the event has also been really good. In terms of the future though, and going back to see what could we have done better or differently -- what would it look like if it was in a different place, if the format was slightly altered -- thats yet to come. I think were going to examine it to see what can be made better, not to see what was a problem.LeBrun: [The NHLPA] has agreed with the league that there will be another World Cup, right? There wont be another 12-year wait like the last time?Fehr: No, [the next one will be held in] 2020, absent something very unusual happening.LeBrun: That leads to my next question. Theres an opt-out window in 2019 for either side to announce it is pulling out of the collective bargaining agreement (in September 2020). What impact could that have on a 2020 World Cup?Fehr: Theoretically it could have an impact -- just like anytime youre negotiating, it could have an impact on the [NHL] season. But you cant plan for that. You have to plan for normal operations and to get ready to make it work. One of the side benefits that I hope grows out of this effort is that we develop a better day-by-day working relationship (with the league) -- not just the labor relations, but in day-by-day [issues], and that we learn to appreciate what the other side can bring. We learn to make it better. Maybe its a little extra nudge to try to avoid the problems that have plagued the sport for so long.LeBrun: Well, gee, that sounds promising. But I guess well see.Fehr (smiling): We will always see ...LeBrun: Many hockey fans who tweet at me seem to confuse the existence of this event as a replacement for the Olympics. I keep telling them that one has nothing to do with the other. In a perfect world, I think you believe that both could exist side by side, correct?Fehr: Yes, I personally do. I dont think theres any doubt about that. The Olympics, you have to remember, is an event onto itself; its unlike anything else. Its a multisport event, you have people from all over the world and it has its own special charm, its own special issues. But its distinct from anything else.Thats an entirely different thing, I believe, than one sport saying: Look, we want to have a celebration for ourselves. We want to have the very best. And I think that we can have a higher quality of competition here than we can (in the Olympics), just like the U.S. Open is likely to have a higher quality of competition than the Olympic golf tournament is ever going to have. And therefore, you can do both. And maybe you can do some other things, too, as you begin to grow the game internationally. But one doesnt necessarily preclude the other at all.LeBrun: This week the NHL painted a bleak picture for participation in the 2018 Olympics in South Korea unless theres a change in tone from the IOC as far as covering some the costs that have been covered in the past (for players travel and insurance, etc.). Whats your sense of where this stands right now in regard to South Korea?Fehr: Well, Im going to say a couple of things about that. First of all, the players obviously want to go, proovided appropriate agreements can be reached.dddddddddddd. Theres no question about that. The second thing is, we do have a long history of certain kinds of expenses being covered, basically in recognition of the fact that youre shutting down a $4 billion business in the middle of the season. The third thing is that, although I dont know what the magic dates are for [finishing] negotiations, I recall that we didnt wrap up an agreement on Sochi until seven or eight months ahead of time. Well just take it as a matter of course. I choose to look at it in an optimistic way. Hopefully, itll work.LeBrun: The league seems to be suggesting a Dec. 31 deadline for an Olympic decision.Fehr: Well, Dec. 31 has some relevance because schedules have to be put together. It doesnt mean there arent alternatives or you couldnt move some things around at a later point in time. But the requirement to put a schedule together is not a made-up thing. Thats real.LeBrun: There has been a lot chatter about what the NHLPA does with its side of the profits. You are a co-owner in this particular event, which in itself in unique. Youre going to make some money -- probably not as much as youd hoped. You have a 700-plus player membership but also 160-plus players within that who played in this tournament. The debate internally, from what I can gather, is what take the players here at the tournament should get compared with the players at large. Is that fair?Fehr: First of all, theres a lot of debate and discussion going on, and itll continue over the next several weeks -- but I would be surprised if it persists past the beginning of the season. But its really funny. When unions come out and make a pronouncement -- Weve looked at this, and 100 percent of everybody agrees to A, B, C -- then people say theres been no debate, no discussion, no democracy, no anything like that. And then when an issue comes up, and the players are actively debating, discussing, talking among themselves, trying to reach consensus, then people want to talk about division. All I can say is, thats what the players are supposed to do. And thats what we encourage them to do. Im not concerned about it getting worked out in a reasonable time frame. Thats not a problem at all. I dont think theres ever been any question that, on a per-person basis, the players who participated [in the World Cup] would get multiples of what would be distributed to anybody else. Exactly what that percentage is going to be is what the discussion is about.LeBrun: My last question has to do with the format of the tournament. Theres a debate already about whether the next World Cup should have a traditional field, country versus country only, or whether it should bring back the 23-and-under North America team and Team Europe. What are your thoughts?Fehr: One of the most positive things about this is that when the format was announced, you had a lot of questions, a lot of discussion, a lot of people who are very close to the game saying, What about this? What about tradition? Hows it going to work?To see those opinions change, in some cases, as we got close to the event, and then to see that youre going to have discussion afterward, that suggests to me that people care -- that they think its important, that its an issue that bears serious attention. And thats all to the good. Were going to look at everything, and obviously well talk to the players. We want to look at the reaction in various markets, including the Team Europe markets. We want to see if it makes sense to go another route, or if it makes sense to continue this or to tweak it somehow. And I dont want to prejudge it, any of it. One of the benefits we will have by doing that analysis post-facto, rather than ahead of time, is that well be doing it informed by hard data. And that matters. ' ' '

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- A year after having the NFLs worst running game, the Detroit Lions look as if they potentially have a dynamic duo in the backfield.Ameer Abdullah and Theo Riddick combined for 120 yards receiving and 108 yards rushing in the Lions season-opening 39-35 victory at Indianapolis.Detroit was determined to establish its improved ground game early against the Colts, including on the opening drive that was capped by Riddicks 21-yard touchdown run.And late in the game, the coaches didnt abandon that part of the game plan as they called running plays to set up Riddicks second score on a 13-yard reception. To be a successful team, you got to be able to run the ball in tough situations and you got to be able to count on it, Abdullah said Wednesday. The Lions had a one-dimensional offense last season, relying on Matthew Staffords arm, a receiving group led by Calvin Johnson and Riddicks pass-receiving skills.Detroit averaged an NFL-low 83.4 yards rushing per game, gaining just 3.8 yards per rushing attempt.Abdullah approached that average by himself in Week 1, running for 63 yards on 12 carries. Riddick had seven carries -- matching a career high -- for 45 yards and a score against the Colts. In the run game, we were a little bit better, Lions coach Jim Caldwell said. The real key thing is to make certain that we continue because every week is going to be a little different challenge. The Lions (1-0) will host Tennessee (0-1) on Sunday in their home opener. The Titans began the season with a 25-16 loss at home to the Minnesota Vikings, but did an impressive job of holding Adrian Peterson to just 31 yards rushing on 19 carries, none of which went for double digits in yards.Without Johnson in the lineup for the first time in a decade, the Lions have had to quickly learn how to make the most of what they have on the roster.Abdullah, a second-round pick last year, and Riddick, a sixth-round selection in 2013, appear to be great options for Stafford when he hands the ball off or tosses a short pass. Both guys are really, really good between the tackles running the ball, and also out in space, Stafford said.Catching the ball out of the backfield, running wide, whatever it is. Weve got two talented guys, two young guys that are going to help us out.Abdullah had career highs with five receptions and 57 yards receiving and a score at Indianapolis. Riddick had five receptions for 63 yards and a score, picking up where he left off last season. He and Danny Woodhead had 80 receptions, the most by a running back in 2015.I said this morning, `They have two backs that are dangerous in both areas and so do we, said Titans coach Mike Mularkey, referring to DeMarco Murray and rookie Derrick Henry. Itll be a good challenge.Detroit also has a third running back, Dwayne Washington, a 6-foot-2, 226-pound rookie, who gives them another option in short-yardage situations. Washington powered into the end zone on a 1-yard run, helping the Lions take an early 14-point lead against the Colts.Hes a really young, talented kid, got a lot of raw potential, Stafford said. Hes got potential. Well see where his role goes, and how he evolves in this offense. PORTLAND, Ore. -- Xavier Johnsons 19 points helped Colorado hand Portland its first home loss in the Terry Porter era on Saturday night, 76-63.We gave away too many offensive rebounds and turned the ball over too much, Pilots senior guard Alec Wintering said. But we were hanging close (and then) just let it get away.Josh Fortune added 14 points, Derrick White had 13 and George King 12 for Colorado (6-2), which was coming off a 14-point loss to in-state rival Colorado State on Wednesday. Johnson hit 8 of 10 from the line and was 5 for 11 from the field.Jazz Johnson led Portland (4-3) with 18 points, Wintering added 17 and DMarques Tyson had 14.A 3-pointer from Tyson with less than nine minutes left brought Portland within three and the Pilots bench to their feet but the celebration was short lived. A jumper from Johnson ignited Colorados offense and Portland soon trailed by double-digits.We knew coming into the game that their physicality and ability to rebound would be a game changer, Porter said. They really scrapped and we didnt do a good enough job of keeping them off the boards and then we turned it over too many times. But the Pilots gave Colorado a run for their money in the first half. Both teams opened slow and struggled offensively -- neither capitalizing on the first five possessions. The Pilots gave up 10 turnovers, including five from Wintering and the Buffs committed eight. A 12-2 Portland run put them up by as many as eight but a 7-0 run by the Buffs cut the Pilots halftime lead to two.In the second half, an early 7-0 run by CU tied the game up at 35. TThe two teams traded points before Colorado was able to pull away on Deleon Browns 3-pointer with just over 11 minutes remaining.dddddddddddd Although the Pilots later got within three, and had some good minutes from Tyson late, they never caught up.The second half we were better, CU coach Tad Boyle said. We battled. We competed and guys stepped up and made plays. Josh Fortune made plays, X (Xavier) Johnson made plays. West (Gordon) made a big play at a critical time. Derrick (White) made plays down the stretch. Thats what you have to have. Your fifth year seniors are only good if they play like fifth year seniors. In the second half tonight, they did.Wintering and Johnson never sat, playing all 40 minutes for Portland.BIG PICTUREColorado: The Buffaloes led the pac-12 in 3-point percentage last season and finished just 26.3 percent from outside the arc against the Pilots on Saturday.Portland: The undersized backcourt of Johnson and Wintering -- who are fourth in scoring in the country behind Central Michigans Marcus Keene and Braylon Rayson, St. Bonaventures Jalen Adams and Matt Mobley and Pittsburgs Jamel Artis and Michael Young -- put up a combined 35 points against the Buffs. The pair is coming off a combined 62-point performance.UP NEXTColorado: Returns home to host Xavier on Dec. 7 at 7 p.m.Portland will stay at home and host UT Rio Grande Valley at 7 p.m. on Monday and will look to end their last home game for two weeks with a win. made nervous errors on both wings that

Erstellt 06.11.2019 13:25 von MJL456 06.11.2019 13:25 In der Kategorie Allgemein.

FRISCO, Texas -- Rookie quarterback Dak Prescott moved the Dallas offense in his debut, early when the Cowboys kept settling for field goals, and late when a mental error in the final seconds prevented a try for a long kick in a 20-19 loss to the New York Giants .The problem is, Dallas still cant find a way to win without Tony Romo. The Giants bottled up both Prescotts rookie partner in the backfield, running back Ezekiel Elliott, and 2014 All-Pro receiver Dez Bryant. Oh, and a defense that never seemed to get a big stop during a 4-12 season last year failed again in the fourth quarter. With another NFC East opponent looming Sunday in Washington, the Cowboys are searching for the same answers they were a year ago when they went 1-11 without the injured Romo. The 36-year-old is likely to miss at least another month after breaking a bone in his back in the preseason.I think we have a chance to be a good team this season, owner and general manager Jerry Jones said. A lot of it has to do with what I saw from Dak and really what I saw overall. We did some good things defensively, too.Elliott was limited to 51 yards on 20 carries, and consecutive 8-yard runs were his longest, including one for his first NFL touchdown. Even with the Giants focusing on the fourth overall pick, Bryant was held to one catch on Prescotts first pass.Bryant did have a catch-that-wasnt moment similar to the 2014 playoffs against Green Bay when a 24-yard touchdown was overturned by replay. Another deep throw to Bryant in the end zone was broken up.Thats a guy theyre going to game-plan against, Prescott said. They might be happy about taking some catches away, but we had some chances. Well continue to attack Dez and go after them in those coverages when they give them to us.Repeatedly in the fourth quarter last season, the Dallas defense couldnt get key stops either to protect leads or give the offense a chance for a rally. While Brandon Carr set up the only Dallas touchdown with his first interception since Thanksgiving 2013, he also turned Victor Cruz loose in the end zone for the winning score on third down with 6:13 remaining. The Cowboys had stopped the Giants four straight times before the decisive drive that started near midfield.Something else had a familiar feeling to last year: one of those what-just-happened plays. Instead of getting out of bounds with no timeouts and less than 10 seconds to go, receiver Terrance Williams turned upfield trying to make a potential winning kick even shorter. The game ended at the New York 40 with Prescott unable to get a snap before time expired. So now, the Cowboys have to work to avoid another familiar feeling: early-season losses piling up while Romo watches from the sideline.I think theres a lot of confidence in this locker room, said tight end Jason Witten, who combined with Cole Beasley for 17 of Prescotts 25 completions with the Cowboys working mostly underneath the New York defense. Well learn from it. That doesnt minimize the loss.Especially when it was so similar to the 12 from last season.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL---Follow Schuyler Dixon on Twitter at https://twitter.com/apschuyler Air Max From China . NEW YORK -- Going forward, its clear Angelique Kerber is the one to beat in womens tennis. After failing to reach the second week of a single major last year, the German won her second of the season Saturday at the US Open. She defeated No. 10 seed?Karolina Pliskova in a smashing final 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.The newly minted No. 1-ranked player, who this year made a commitment to being more assertive, has enjoyed a spectacular renaissance at the age of 28. Kerber becomes only the second woman to win her first two Grand Slam singles titles after turning 28, joining?Li Na, who won the 2011 French Open at 29 and, three years later, the Australian Open. But Li retired at the end of that 2014 season. Kerber isnt going anywhere. With Serena Williams turning 35 later this month, there are telling signs that her dominance is deteriorating. Kerber, the quintessential late bloomer, seems poised to play the role of perennial champion for the next several years.Patience was the virtue that rewarded Kerber in the end, as she came back from a 3-1 deficit in the third set. Afterward, she blew kisses to the crowd and sobbed, head in hands, on her changeover chair. Its just amazing, Kerber said in her on-court interview, voice breaking. I won my second Grand Slam in one year. That is the best year in my career. All the dreams came true this year. This was Kerbers third Grand Slam singles final of the year, having beaten Williams at the Australian Open before losing to her at Wimbledon. That winning check for $3.5 million surely will go a long way, but the confidence she draws from this smashing breakthrough? Priceless. The match ran 2 hours, 7 minutes with Kerber holding a narrow 97-90 margin in points. It was a rare competitive match in a womens final here, only the fourth three-setter in 22 years.Three weeks ago in Cincinnati, Pliskova carved up Kerber in the final 6-3, 6-1. But Kerber said she was tired after playing the Rio Olympics, where she won the silver medal. Pliskova elected to pass on Rio and prepare for Cincinnati and the US Open. This result suggests fatigue was a leading factor in their previous match.Kerber has a wonderfully complete game. Shes a relentless retriever and hits the ball hard off both wings. She artfully moved the spidery 6-foot-1 Czech player around the court, consistently working her into more untenable positions. And while her second serve remains a vulnerability -- Pliskova did little with her offerings of 75-77 mph -- Kerber rarely plays a loose point. The bottom-lline numbers confirmed this: Pliskova hit 40 winners, but they were countered by 47 unforced errors.dddddddddddd Kerber, on the other hand, was more efficient, hitting 21 winners and only 17 unforced errors -- 30 fewer than Pliskova.Make no mistake, Pliskova is a serious keeper. She was fatigued at the end, understandably, after her journey here. Interestingly, 10 of the past 13 players to beat Serena Williams at a major, now including Pliskova, lost their next match.Pliskovas first game in a Grand Slam singles final was a worst-case scenario. She made nervous errors on both wings that were almost painful to watch, missed four of six first serves -- and broke a string. For that one game, Pliskova suddenly seemed to realize where she was -- four rounds past anything she had ever experienced in a major. But after she lost the first set, something curious happened. Pliskova slipped back into that comfort zone that has enveloped her this fortnight. This summer alone she beat five of the WTAs top 10 players.I just found in myself some power in the second set, Pliskova said in her on-court interview. Even [though] I couldnt get the win, Im really happy.Hopefully many more finals to come.Pliskova has been a revelation this tournament, becoming only the fourth woman to defeat both Serena and Venus Williams in the same Grand Slam event. She saved a match point against Venus in the fourth round and, in the semifinals against Serena, out-served the best womens server of all time.Womens tennis finds itself in transition these days.Serena Williams and Roger Federer are about to be the same age;?Maria Sharapova, 29, is sitting out a two-year drug ban; and Victoria Azarenka, 27, is pregnant. A group of younger players have failed to create separation: Simona Halep, Agnieszka Radwanska, Madison Keys, Eugenie Bouchard and Sloane Stephens. In recent years, three young players have inserted themselves into the Grand Slam conversation: Petra Kvitova won the 2011 Wimbledon title at 21 and repeated there three years later. Azarenka won the 2012 Australian Open at age 22, then repeated the following year. Garbine Muguruza won the French Open earlier this year at the age of 22.And now, Angelique Kerber has won two of the past four majors. Shes seven months younger than Novak Djokovic, her No. 1 counterpart on the mens side.Get ready, tennis fans. Its Kerbers time. ' ' '

But now that hes in the NHL, the Calgary Flames centre showed big improvement in that department by scoring the winner in the eighth round of a 5-4 shootout victory over the Winnipeg Jets on Monday. Katherine Reutter remembers the day well. Not that it shouldve been all that memorable. She was simply going through her normal grind at the rink, tinkering with the skates of some athletes she was coaching.I had been sitting for a while, she says now. When it was time to get up, I was like, `Uh, oh, this is going to hurt.Pain had become a constant companion in Reutters life. Even after winning two medals in short track speedskating at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics, it was the one opponent she couldnt seem to beat. With her body breaking down after repeated hip surgeries and chronic problems in her lower back and pelvis, she was forced to retire from the sport she loved so much in 2013.She was only 24.Which brings us back to that day, a little more than a year later, after she had taken up coaching as a way to stay involved with speedskating. She went to stand up and felt ... nothing.Oh my God, that didnt hurt, Reutter remembers telling herself. It was the first time in four or five years that it didnt hurt. I was even grimacing as I was getting ready to get up. But then, it was like, wait a minute, that didnt hurt. It was incredible. It was not like I was cured in one day, but it was my first glimmer of hope.Reutter has taken that hope and skated with it.As her body kept improving, and knowing she didnt want to coach the rest of her life, Reutter decided to return to the ice. Earlier this month, competing for the first time since coming out of retirement, she earned a spot on the U.S. team that will compete on this years World Cup circuit.Next weekend, Reutter will be in Calgary for the first short track meet of the international season -- eager, and admittedly a bit nervous, to see where she stands after all that time away.I dont know what to expect, she says. I like to believe in the process, that I did all the right work. But I also respect how hard every girl and boy in the world works to be great at what we do. I dont have any idea where I fall in all that.Back in 2010, Reutter was one of Americas shining Olympic stars in Vancouver -- bubbling over with Midwestern charm and very, very good at the chaotic sport of short track. She won a silver medal in the 1,000 meters and helped the U.S. claim bronze in the 3,000 relay. She also knew how to sell the sport, famously letting Stephen Colbert sign her thigh -- This is what makes me go fast, I need this, she quipped on his show -- when the comedian stepped in to help sponsor the financially strapped program before the Vancouver Games.Reutter seemed the logical successor to longtime American star Apolo Anton Ohno, who retired after the 2010 Olympics as the most decorated U.S. Winter Olympian. The following year at the world championships, Reutter captured a gold and two silvers, seemingly setting herself up for another big medal haul in Sochi. Her body had other ideas.Longstanding problems in her hip led to three operations, the last of them a radical procedure that she hoped would help her finally get past the pain. Instability in her pelvis was another issue, not to mention a herniated disc in her lower back. Oh, and lets not forget the arthritis that had taken over in her back and hips.Reutter was finally told that, while there were possible treatments that mmight help her get to the Sochi Olympics, she was facing a lifetime of health problems, including the prospect of never being able to have a normal pregnancy.ddddddddddddShe decided to walk away.I like where I was as an athlete. I had accomplished some great goals. I was happy to spend more time with my family, says Reutter, a native of Champaign, Illinois. At the time, it was the right thing to do.Not that the pain went away.I couldnt sleep, sit, walk or stand how I wanted, Reutter says. I couldnt exercise really at all, maybe once a week. On the bad days, I was lucky if I could get out for a walk. It was intense.Looking to get some relief, she began seeing a Milwaukee chiropractor, Dr. Joe Scovell, who runs a clinic in the Milwaukee area where Reutter was coaching. He had treated many of her athletes, so she decided to give it a try. At that point, she had been in chronic pain for going on six years. What did she have to lose?Scovells treatment plan didnt focus so much on traditional chiropractic techniques, but more of a change in her nutrition and supplements. The pain got worse at first, but a few months later came the sudden breakthrough. There have been some setbacks since then, but soon the good days began to outnumber the bad ones. She worked weightlifting and yoga into her routine. She began walking every day, measuring her progress with a Fitbit that was a gift from her mom.The longer I went without pain, the more encouraged I was, Reutter says. Now, life is full of hope again. Reutter is close to finishing her college degree -- after only 10 years, she jokes -- and is engaged for former professional hockey player Mark Adamek. They plan to get married sometime next spring. The U.S. speedskating program is thrilled to have Reutter back in the mix. After a dismal showing at the Sochi Olympics, when the long track team didnt come close to winning a medal and the short trackers managed only a single relay silver, the Americans are in rebuilding mode with Pyeongchang just 16 months away. Its great to see her back on the ice again, says Alex Izykowski, head coach of the womens short track team. Shes got that killer instinct thats hard to teach, that racing mentality. While Reutter is not where she needs to be physically, and her body at 28 certainly doesnt recover like it did when she was younger, Izykowski has no doubt that Reutter will be a strong contender for a spot on the 2018 Olympic team.If she puts her mind to it and stays positive, she can get there, he says. But Reutter is quick to point out that returning to the Olympics is not really the reason she came back.It goes deeper than that.Even to this day, I dont feel totally comfortable saying (Olympics) out loud, she says. I really just wanted to wake up with the same fire and passion I had when I was skating before. ... Every day, I want to wake up, open my eyes and say, `Yes! I get to do this today! Thats so uncommon for most people when they go to work. I wanted that feeling back.---Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963 . FIFA will have a new president on 26 February. After 18 years, Sepp Blatters controversial reign will come to an official end at the FIFA Congress in Zurich. Five candidates want to replace Blatter and become the most powerful man in world football, and whoever wins will become the ninth elected president in FIFAs 112-year history. The new president will be elected in a secret ballot of FIFAs 209 member associations, but Kuwait and Indonesia are banned, so there may be only 207 votes up for grabs. Africa has 54 votes, Europe 53, Asia 46, North and Central America and the Caribbean 35, Oceania 11 and South America 10.A candidate needs two thirds of the votes to win in the first round. In subsequent rounds, the candidate with the lowest number of votes drops out and a simple majority is required to win.During the past three months, Sky Sports News HQ has interviewed all five candidates - Sheikh Salman of Bahrain, Gianni Infantino, Prince Ali of Jordan, Jerome Champagne and Tokyo Sexwale.Over the next week we will profile each candidate, study their manifestos and assess their chances. Today, we start with Sheikh Salman. Salman is currently president of the Asian Football Confederation SHEIKH SALMAN OF BAHRAIN:WHY IS HE STANDING?Sheikh Salman did not intend to stand for the top job in world football this year. He decided to enter the race only when it became clear that Michel Platinis bid was in serious trouble. In May 2013, Salman was elected president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Blatter and Platini were in Kuala Lumpur, as Salman received 33 of the 46 votes.Last May, the AFC backed Blatter to serve a fifth term as FIFA president.Salman and the AFC were going to back Platini this time, until details emerged of the £1.3m payment Platini had received from FIFA in 2011, a payment which had been signed off by Blatter without a written contract and a payment which led to both men being banned from football. With Platini out of the running, the AFC needed their own man in the race and that man was Salman. It is worth bearing in mind, though, that Salman would have stepped aside if Platini had cleared his name in time to re-enter the race.WHAT ARE HIS CHANCES?Sheikh Salman is the clear favourite and his chances look good. He can count on the majority of Asias 46 votes and he is confident of securing many of Africas 54 votes.Last month, the AFC signed a controversial memorandum of understanding with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the CAF executive committee has endorsed him.Salmans team believe he will receive 18 of the 25 votes of the Caribbean Football Union and 5 of the 10 votes of the South American CONMEBOL confederation.Theoretically, he should have the votes he needs to win in the second round, but this is a secret ballot and there is no guarantee that he will get the votes he has been promised. The other four candidates will all pick up votes in Africa and some member associations have already broken ranks and publicly endorsed Prince Ali, Gianni Infantino and Jerome Champagne. As the frontrunner, Salman has not had to do as much travelling and campaigning as his nearest challenger Infantino. Salmans team expect him to receive between 70 and 80 votes in the first round. Salman plans to split FIFA into two parts if he is elected WHAT KIND OF PRESIDENT WILL HE BE?He will be a non-executive president and will delegate responsibility. Many people think FIFA needs a more hands-on approach at a time of crisis. Salman, though, is convinced that his light-touch leadership style is the way forward. He calls FIFA a phoenix project and he believes he is the man who can lift the organisation from its ashes.Richard Scudamore has been talked about as a potential FIFA secretary general in a Salman administration, but it is highly unlikely that the Premier League executive chairman would want to have anything to do with FIFA.Salmans top executive will not necessarily have a football background, but he will be a turnaround expert.Salman also wants to set up a board of advisers from within the game. The great and the good will be invited to Zurich on a regular basis. Sir Alex Ferguson is one of the names on Salmans list of potential advisers.Salman has tried repeatedly to draw a line under allegations that he was involved in the identification of athletes and footballers who were imprisoned and tortured in Bahrain in 2011. He says he can guarantee that no-one was tortured under his authority but the questions have not gone away and there will be more of them if he becomes FIFA president.WHAT STANDS OUT IN HIS MANIFESTO? Salman says he does not want to be paid, but he will publish the salaries of other senior officials. He wants to divide FIFA into two parts. There will be Business FIFA and Football FIFA.This separation should, in theory, ensure that corruption scandals are a thing of the past. Or, as Salman puts it: Only by strictly separating the generation of funds and supervising the flow of all monies spent can we guarantee the rebirth of FIFA. Other candidates have talked about expanding the World Cup from 32 to 40 teams, but Salman believes this is a policy designed to attract votes from countries who have trouble qualifying for the tournament.Speaking during a presentation in Miami on 11 February, Salman said: Promises of more World Cup places during an election are unprofessional. He says any changes need to be properly studied and debated before they are introduced. Blatter has done many good things according to Sheikh Salman WHAT DOES HE THINK OF SEPP BLATTER?Like all the other candidates, Salman does not want to criticise Blatter in public. Blatter received almost two-thirds of the votes at the presidential election last May and there are still many member associations who think he has been treated unfairly. Salman - and the other candidates - need their votes, so any criticism is always qualified with praise.Salman says he has known Blatter since 1998. He says Blatter has done many good things. He thinks Blatter made a mistake by not standing down at the end of his fourth term. He still respects Blatter: We have to carry on the good work that has been done but in a different way. I have respect for him and his contribution for the game. Life has changed, we have to turn a page.WHO DOES HE BLAME FOR THE FIFA CRISIS?Salman believes FIFAs problems have been caused by rogue elements in confederations which are beyond FIFAs control. He blames individuals in the CONCACAF and CONMEBOL region and says FIFAs problems have to be put into context: Other sports are much worse. You look at athletics and tennis and the doping and fixing - there are much worse cases than FIFA.WHO DOES HE SUPPORT?Manchester United. Salman says he started supporting United in the 80s. His favourite United players are Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes. He admits that watching the current United team can be boring. Fake Soccer Jerseys .B. - Sebastien Auger made 44 saves as the Saint John Sea Dogs edged the visiting Acadie-Bathurst Titan 2-1 on Saturday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. ST. LOUIS -- Adam Wainwright will start, but everyone is available.Even Trevor Rosenthal, the former closer who worked three innings of valuable long relief on Saturday as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied for a win over the Pittsburgh Pirates that assured Game 162 of being meaningful. How meaningful it is, though, depends on the help St. Louis (85-76) gets from the Los Angeles Dodgers. So far this weekend, the Dodgers have been about as helpful to the Cardinals as a pitching staff full of sore shoulders and Tommy John surgeries, which is to say not at all.San Franciscos 9-3 and 3-0 victories over Los Angeles have canceled out St. Louis 7-0 and 4-3 decisions over the Pirates, leaving the teams in the same position they have been in since Tuesday. The Giants are a game up with a game left. Catching the New York Mets isnt happening, since the Mets clinched home field advantage for Wednesday nights National League wild card game by winning in Philadelphia on Saturday. If the Cardinals win and San Francisco loses Sunday, there will be a Game 163 Monday night at Busch Stadium. Any other combination of results and St. Louis will head for the first tee on Monday, its season not including a playoff game for the first time in six years. So manager Mike Matheny has no choice but to manage this game as though its a Game 7. He certainly assigned that kind of importance to Saturday, hooking starter Michael Wacha after one inning and using six relievers to cover the last 24 outs.We had to have extraordinary effort from our bullpen today, and we got it, Matheny said.dddddddddddd That was just impressive. Guys like to know their roles, but they were ready. There were more moving parts to this one than normal. The Cardinals hope Matheny doesnt have to make as many walks to the mound or as many calls to the bullpen. For that to become reality, Wainwright (13-9, 4.67) will have to summon up one of his best games of the year.Wainwright has won his last two starts, but has allowed nine runs in 11 innings against Colorado and Cincinnati, profiting from an offense that has plated 22 runs. Hes 2-1 against Pittsburgh this season, winning 5-1 at home on July 7 and 12-6 in PNC Park on Sept. 5.The Pirates (78-82) will counter with Ryan Vogelsong (3-7, 5.00) in their season finale. Vogelsong was a 6-4 loser to the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night, and is only 3-7 with a 6.02 earned run average in 23 career outings against St. Louis. While injuries have stripped Pittsburgh of some key parts to its lineup for this series, it can still run Jung Ho Kang out there, which is bad news for the Cardinals.Kangs three-run homer off Wacha in the first inning Saturday was his 21st of the season. Six have been at the expense of St. Louis pitching, the most anyone has hit against the Cardinals this season.Kang has swung the bat very aggressively with power against that staff, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said. Jim Grobe came out of semiretirement to help Baylor get through a tumultuous season. After that is done, he has no plans to coach again.Grobe said Monday that he told new Baylor athletic director Mack Rhoades early in the season that he didnt want to be a candidate to be the full-time coach. That conversation came a month into the season when the Bears were still undefeated, and before their current five-game losing streak.Honestly, football needs a fresh start, Grobe said the start of his weekly news conference on the Waco campus. Im very, very proud of our players who have remained loyal to Baylor. Theyve given me 100-plus reasons for hope in these difficult times. The 64-year-old Grobe had been out of coaching for two seasons when last May he accepted the role as Baylors acting head coach. He said he committed then through January, which would include being part of the Bears bowl game, and now expects to be retired and playing golf after that.Despite some rocky times , Grobe says he has no regrets about taking over when Baylor suddenly dismissed two-time Big 12 champion coach Art Briles after a report alleging that the university mishandled complaints of sexual assault.Ive not ever had the mindset that I was doing more than helping out, Grobe said earlier on the Big 12 coaches teleconference. Its been a little more challenging than I expected. ... The thing that I have found that I expected to find is a lot of really good kids. Thats what weve got to stay focused on. Those are the guys that have probably been hurt the most.Baylors search for a new coach likely will intensify this week since many schools have already completed their regular seasons. The Bears (6-5, 3-5 Big 12) play their regular-season finale Saturday at 14th-ranked West Virginia (9-2, 6-2), which is Grobes home state.Even though Baylor has lost five in a row since starting 6-0 to get bowl eligible, any suggestions of the school turning down a bowl berth seem moot. The Big 12 has seven bowl slots to fill and will have only six bowl-eligible teams, including the Bears.Baylors skid started with a 35-34 loss at Texas, which came after a group of Baylor regents first provided some details about some of the allegations against Briles in a Wall Street Journal article.A week later, the Bears suffered their worst home loss since 2005. They lost 62-22 to TCU a day after assistant coaches and several staff members issued a statement on Twitter expressing their support for Briles and disputing claims by regents that the former coach knew of an alleged gang rape. All the assistants were retained from Briles staff. They included the former coachs son, offensive coordinator Kendal Briles, and his son-in-law, running backs coach Jeff Lebby. We got through the first six games pretty well, and for a couple of weeks lost some focus, some things in the press and our coaches were upset, that in turn upsets the players, Grobe said. Weve really played hard the last few weeks. We just havent played well enough to win. This is Grobes 20th season as a head coach at the FBS level, having previous led Wake Forest (2001-13) and Ohio (1995-2000).When he initially got to Baylor , he said he had missed coaching and didnt discount the idea of being there longer. But even as the Bears got off to a good start in September, he quickly informed Rhoades -- who started at the school in mid-August -- that he had no intention of staying past this season.I wanted him to know early on that no matter how the season turned out -- it has nothing to do with anything thats happened over the past five games -- that I was not a candidate, Grobe said. That I was here to help for a season and that Id be out of here and he needed to start his search and be focused on finding the next best guy for Baylor.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Its been a difficult few months for the Olympic womens basketball teams from Turkey and France. Both countries have been victimized by deadly extremist attacks, and Turkey is struggling with the aftermath of a bloody attempted coup. For players on both teams, being at the Summer Olympics in Rio offers a respite from whats happening at home -- and a chance to show the world a united front. In France, we started to lose faith in people, French center Isabelle Yacoubou said. I hope these Olympics will show people how we can come back together. We are all here together. Its not like some French, because youre black or white, are against other French people. We are all French and fighting for the country. I hope this little time, we will find some joy and try to forget these bad moments. The teams played each other in their Olympic tournament opener Saturday, which Yacoubou thought was special. France opened with a 55-39 victory over Turkey. Before the game, Yacoubou and her teammates stood proudly while the French national anthem plays . For the past few years, the players have had a tradition of facing their countrys flag with their arms around each others waists. With all thats happened, for me its really special, Yacoubou said. Some crazy people did some crazy things. Its very special to be proud of this flag and we show it in front of everybody.Yacoubou was deeply affected by the July 14 truck attack in Nice , which left 85 dead. She has a house in the area and spends time there every summer with her husband and son. She was in Italy when the attack on a holiday fireworks crowd took place.I felt a really big pain. What can we do? she said. All we can do is represent our country the best we can and keep going.French teammmate Sandrine Gruda echoed the sentiment.ddddddddddddWe show pride in our country with the flag and we hope these next few weeks can help heal, she said. After Saturdays game, the French turned and applauded the smattering of fans waving a couple of French flags. The turnout took the team by surprise, especially with an early tipoff on the opening day.We didnt know a lot of the fans were here, French guard Sarah Michel said. It was nice. You dont know these people, but you play for them and all the people on TV, so were happy to play, to win and to share with them the game.Turkey also is in need of healing after a string of deadly attacks blamed on the Islamic State group or Kurdish rebels. The Istanbul Airport was bombed on June 28, right before the womens team was about to reconvene for its pre-Olympic training. Then, while the team was training in Slovenia, some militants tried to take the country over on July 15 in a failed coup attempt that left at least 270 dead.I think we all feel a heightened sense of responsibility to show that we are representing Turkey, Sebnem Kimyacioglu said in a first-person story on ESPNW.com. (Show) that we are still on our feet, still standing tall. Our success as a team will not only be a sign that Turkey is a democratic nation, where people of many races, nationalities and religions live together, but I believe it will be a glimmer of hope for the people of Turkey. We are proud of our country, she added. There are a lot of Turkish people who have been living through some dark days and losses recently. Turkish people have a lot of pride, and we want to make them proud of us. ' ' '

Diego Maradona has hit out at the Argentine Football Association after the nations early exit from the Olympic Games, telling Radio La Red, Argentina run the risk of missing the next two World Cups.Argentina exited the Olympic football tournament at the group stage on Wednesday after a 1-1 draw?with Honduras in Brasilia. The senior national team has come close to success in each of the past three years, reaching the finals of the 2014 World Cup, 2015 Copa America and this summers Copa America Centenario, but a crisis at the AFA -- as well as the prospect of Lionel Messi and other key stars retiring -- has left Maradona with serious concerns. The directors were in Miami sunbathing, and they dont care about Argentine football, said Maradona, who won the 1986 World Cup with Argentina.Honduras cant beat us. [It is] a country for which I have a lot of respect, but they play baseball. They dont know anything about football.Argentina, now coached by Edgardo Bauza after Gerardo Martinos resignation, are third in their 2018 World Cup qualification group.?The federation, led by Julio Grondona since the 1970s, has been in turmoil since the late FIFA senior vice president died in 2014.In June, FIFA stepped in and named a committee to run the federations daily affairs with a mandate that elections must be held by July 2017.Maradona claimed that the current chaos within the Argentina federation was institutional and that Barcelona star Lionel Messi was right to call out the federation during the Copa America Centenario.Lets get to work. What Messi was talking about has gone on forever, he said. How is it possible that the families of the coaching staff get better accommodations than the players?Maradona said he had his doubts about whether Argentina would be able to pull a team together in time for World Cup qualifying in September. Argentina face Uruguay on Sept. 1 and Venezuela five days later.I wish Paton [Bauza] the best of luck, but we are taking a risk with this, he said. It [qualifying] is going to be complicated. Finally, he blasted the new federation administration, saying that Argentina has passed from the leadership of Grondona, which he called the mafia of Grondona, to the current situation, which he called a mafia of Macri in reference to the countrys current president, Mauricio Macri. Macri was a former president at Boca Juniors. He said he would seek out current FIFA president Gianni Infantino to address what he sees as institutional problems.I dont like it, and I plan to do something about it, he said. Crystal Palace striker Emmanuel Adebayor says he would love to be remembered like Didier Drogba, should the FA Cup final against Manchester United prove to be his final match in England. The former Togo internationals future at Selhurst Park remains uncertain after signing for the club on a short-term deal in January until the end of the season. Adebayor, who has never won the FA Cup despite spells at Arsenal, Manchester City and Tottenham, insists he wants to stay in England but admits he has offers from clubs abroad. He told Sky Sports: My experience in English football has been beautiful and I would love to hit and beat that target to be remembered in English football like Didier Drogba. It is definitely possible [that I move abroad] but you know my love for English football. I am blessed. We are all human beings, no-one is perfect, we make mistakes. I have learned my lessons and thats it. We all move on in our separate ways.Palace clash with United at Wembley on Saturday having stayed in the top-flight for another season and a determined Adebayor admits it would be crazy to win the FA Cup with the Eagles after playing for Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City.If it ends up being my last match in English football, winning the FA Cup, it would be beautiful. What a story, he said.At Arsenal I couldnt win it with them, I went to City and couldnt win it with them, I went to Tottenham and couldnt win it. Coming to win it with Crystal Palace is crazy isnt it?At my age now I have to win it. There is no way of saying maybe tomorrow. There is no maybe tomorrow for me, with what I have done already with the league, I dont think I have three or four FA Cups in me.Now is the right moment for me, let me go and do what I need to do to grab it. Just because Wayne Gretzky laced up his skates in an alumni game over the weekend doesnt mean the NHL is back to the 1980s.It just feels like it.Goals are coming fast and furious through the first two weeks of the season, with scoring at a pace that hasnt been seen in over a decade. Players are scoring an average of 5.98 goals a game, a far cry from the offense-happy days of Gretzky but an increase so far from every other year since 2005-06 when new rules were designed to boost scoring. An influx of young players, the preseason World Cup of Hockey and more backup goaltenders playing because of injuries have kept red lights flashing around the league.Overall, the game is going younger, faster, more skill, so I think everything kind of combines and goes into it, Arizona Coyotes winger Radim Vrbata said. I think the penalties are called more now than late in the season last year. Thats normal, so you probably have more power-play goals. And you have all the guys who played at the World Cup, theyre in their midseason form already where normally it would take them a couple games to get going. The NHL, hoping to keep its fans entertained, has tried many things to get scoring up, from shrinking goaltending equipment to adopting 3-on-3 overtime. Yet goals have hovered around 5.3 per game over the past five years. The jump early this season has as much to do with young talent like Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Toronto Maple Leafs rookie Auston Matthews as anything else.McDavid and Matthews lead a wave of 16 teenagers in the NHL right now, players who dazzle with flashy moves and who sometimes arent afraid to take a risk and maybe turn the puck over. As hockey trends more toward speed and skill, the game becomes more unpredictable and coaches gain more gray hair. You have more skill players in the league, too, so theyre not as conscious with puck management, Washington Capitals coach Barry Trotz said. You talk to the coaches probably around the league that might be as much as anything, and (players are) finding the back of the net on those.Coyotes coach Dave Tippett joked that its a Team North America mentality, referencing the 23-and-under World Cup group that thrived playing end-to-end, fast-paced games and scored at a blistering pace. Beyond just Team North America, the World Cup got many of the leagues elite up to speed to start the year, and Philadelphia forward Pierre-Edouard Bellemare believes he and the other 168 players who took part are already in December form.It definitely helps, Flyers teammate Sean Couturier said. I think guys have been in game situations at such a high pace, high level for a month and a half before the season actually started.Eight of the top nine scorers so far this season played in the World Cup, and surprise standout Richard Panik benefited from so many Chicago Blackhawks players being away by making the most of extra ice time in preseason. The Blackhawks are also doing their part to contribute to the goal fest by allowing a league-high 14 of the 138 power-play goals scored through Wednesday.Carolina Hurricanes coach Bill Peters thinks power-play units are ahead of penalty kills and that five-on-five play is looser than usual.Loose play plus a lot of backup goaltenders in the nets is a recipe for offense. Through 97 games, 61 different goalies have started at least once, compared with 85 in 1,230 games last season.Thats in part a product of injuries to starters like the Los Angeles Kings Jonathan Quick, Boston Bruins Tuukka Rask and Arizonas Mike Smith and also the compressed schedule forced because of the World Cup. Each team will have a five-day bye week in January or February.Im sure because we have a lot of back to backs and we have the bye week -- the games are probably compressed a little bit more together than its been in the last (few) years, Capitals backup goalie Philipp Grubauer said. If youre good and play good and get the right numbers and win the games, Im sure (backups) will get a few more starts.Backups will continue to play, but many around the NHL expect production to slide back to normal as the season wears on. So enjoy the throwback scoring while it lasts.I think things will tighten up as we go, Peters said. But its been enjoyable for the fans.---AP Freelancers Matt Carlson in Chicago, Denis Gorman in New York and Paul Gereffi in Sunrise, Florida, contributed.---Follow Stephen Whyno on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/SWhyno Orange Air Max 2018 . Already owning gold from competition in Vancouver in 2010, Loch posted a combined four-run time of 3:27.526. That included a track-record third run of 51. CLEVELAND -- Hey, far be it for us to send waves of alarm rippling through Cubs Nation after one game of a World Series -- even if its a game they happened to lose 6-to-zilch Tuesday night to the fearsome Corey Kluber/Andrew Miller/Cody Allen division of those rampaging Cleveland Indians. But sorry. Theres stuff you need to know about this.So what do you say we get all the terrifying Cubs notes out of the way early on? It will be easier that way.? Over the past three decades, almost every team that lost Game 1 of the World Series found it had just dug itself a canyon it couldnt climb out of. Its tough to comprehend, but Game 1 losers have lost the past six World Series. And 12 of the past 13. And 17 of the past 19. Not to mention 19 of the past 22 and 24 of the past 28. Going all the way back to 1997, the only two teams to lose Game 1 and survive were the 2009 Yankees and the 2002 Angels. Hard to believe in a best-of-seven series, but 100 percent true.? Then theres the Cubs own not-so-beautiful history when they lose Game 1 of any postseason series. Tuesdays Game 1 loss in Cleveland marked the 14th time the Cubs had lost the opener of any type of series. They went 1-12 in the previous 13, coming back to win only in the 2015 NLDS against St. Louis.? If we confine this study just to best-of-seven series, it gets even more ominous. The Cubs now have lost Game 1 of a best-of-seven series 10 times. Theyre 0-9 in the previous nine. Then again, theyre the Cubs! So losing series in just about every way possible has been one of their areas of expertise.? Finally, the Cubs have now been shut out three times in this postseason. Of the seven previous teams to get blanked three times or more in the same postseason, just one -- the 1981 Dodgers -- went on to win the World Series. So are we saying theres a chance? Sure. Why the heck not?But the words of wisdom emanating from the clubhouse of the National League champions sounded remarkably similar to the words welling up from that same group a week or so ago, after theyd been held to two hits and no runs by Clayton Kershaw in Game 2 of the NLCS, and then held to two hits and no runs again, by Rich Hill, in Game 3 of that series. This time, the Cubs were talking about another ace, Kluber. Who held them to four hits and no runs, while striking out nine, in six-plus innings. That, Cubs catcher David Ross?said, is what Cy Youngs do. Thats what aces do.Of course, what Kluber did to the Cubs in this game wasnt quite what Kershaw and Hill did to them in the last round, if only because hes right-handed and the two Dodgers aces are left-handed. But were starting to see signs that this team can be shut down by great pitching this time of year -- when guys like Kluber and Miller show up on the mound with a lot greater frequency than they do from April through September.During the season, this Cubs lineup finished second to Colorado in runs scored. But it has now been shut out more times in 11 games in this postseason (three) than it was shut out in the 102 games it played from June 1 on in the regular season (two). The question is: What does that tell us about where this World Series is headed from here? This is not going to put all the pressure on us, just because we didnt win one ballgame, said the Cubs DH du jour, Kyle Schwarber, who somehow found a way to jet in from the Arizona Fall League, become the first position player ever to get a hit in a World Series after getting zero hits in the season and then rise up to be a voice of reason afterward. Were a good baseball team, Schwarber promised. Well be fine. But will they? They struck out 15 times Tuesday -- something they hadnt done in any nine-inning game in more than four months (since a June 13 meeting with Max Scherzer). They also set a franchise record for most whiffs in a postseason game.So what was the common thread between this game and those two shutouts against the Dodgers? According to ESPN Stats & Information, it was the unusually high percentage of fastballs the Cubs took for strikes against the starters they faced in all three of those games.ddddddddddddWhen Kluber threw his fastball Tuesday, he had a 58 percent called-strike rate. It was 55 percent in that game against Hill and 54 percent in Kershaws Game 2 start. Those are the three highest rates against them by any starting pitchers they faced all year. And while the Cubs had some complaints about plate ump Larry Vanovers strike zone, those gripes mostly concerned the pitches on the corners that Jon Lester didnt get, not the pitches that Kluber did get. Their biggest issue was the number of Klubers exploding two-seam fastballs they appeared to give up on, only to see them veer back into the strike zone. Then, when Kluber went to his off-speed stuff, the Cubs didnt fare much better. They had more swings and misses against his slider and curve (eight) than balls in play (seven). So the nicest thing that happened, Ross said, gratefully, was getting Kluber out of there. But if that was the good news, the bad news was it meant they had to spend the next two innings dealing with Miller, a man who had faced 41 hitters in this postseason before this game -- and struck out 21 of them.Unlike the Red Sox and Blue Jays, the Cubs at least made Miller sweat, running four three-ball counts, drawing as many walks against him in two innings (two) as hed issued in the entire postseason before this and forcing him to throw 46 pitches -- the most hed thrown in relief in more than five years. But they also learned all about what makes Miller maybe the most feared reliever in baseball -- when they loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and got zero runs out of it. The last two outs came on sliders he threw past Addison Russell and Ross. And the movement on both of those pitches was so severe, they were unhittable even for hitters who were pretty sure what was coming. At 3-and-1, Ross said, he threw me a strike slider that kind of backed up a little bit. So what I was seeing [on the next pitch] was, Was that slider going to start in the same place? Im trying to protect against the nasty one and the one that kind of backed up. So as Im trying to look for that, the pitch I struck out on looked like it started from the same spot, but it ended up wrapping around my back leg and pretty much disappeared. Then, an inning later, with two on and two outs, it was Schwarber who got swallowed up by another of Millers most ferocious sliders, swinging over it for the innings final out, then screaming at himself in frustration.Thats his pitch, man, Schwarber said later. Its a plus-plus pitch for a reason.Kluber and Miller were so good, it was easy for the team they beat to fire out the obligatory tip your cap quotes about them and mean every word. But the Cubs will be seeing both of them again. So if theyre going to roar back to win this World Series, theyre going to have to do to those two guys what they did to Kershaw in the NLCS -- make a radical adjustment in the game plan the next time around. The common thread I see, Ross said, is we have a young group that usually gets better the more they see guys and how theyre going to pitch them. Im holding out hope that thats whats going to help us moving forward. But I dont want to take anything away from Corey Klubers performance. It was as dominant as it gets.Well, if they enjoyed his dominance on this night, stay tuned, because there is every indication the Indians plan to run Kluber out there again in Games 4 and 7. And if they grab the lead again, it will be Miller and Allen to follow. Its a formula the Indians already have used to smother two great lineups. And now its the Cubs turn. Lucky them.Asked if he was ready for more of the same fun in Games 4 and 7, Ross laughed and said, Well see. But right now, were going to worry about whoever theyve got on the mound tomorrow. Id rather forget about Corey Kluber for a little while. And after a Game 1 loss that history tells us normally means big trouble -- even for teams this good -- who the heck could blame him? ' ' '

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- A man who aligned himself with the hacker group Anonymous was indicted by a federal grand jury for allegedly conspiring to access an online account to draw attention to a 2012 high school rape case in Ohio.Deric Lostutter -- who went by the online name KYAnonymous -- was charged in a conspiracy to gain access to the account and making false statements to authorities. The indictment said he joined with an unnamed co-conspirator with the online name JustBatCat to hack into a website and email account of a person who ran a booster website for Steubenville High School athletic teams. The two hackers aimed to harass and intimidate (the person who ran the website) and others, and gain publicity for their online identities, the indictment said. Their online actions in December 2013 drew media coverage to the rape case, in part by re-posting a video showing a former Steubenville, Ohio, student joking about the rape. Two Steubenville football players were convicted in 2013 of raping a West Virginia girl at a party.Lostutters attorney, Tor Ekeland of Brooklyn, New York, said he was surprised that an indictment came down three years after Lostutters home was raided by the FBI. Ekeland said he found out about the indictment Thursday night from a story on the internet.I dont understand why they are prosecuting somebody ... who basically helped expose the rape of a minor, said Ekeland, a specialist in defending people accused of computer crimes. He said the harm caused by alleged hacking was minimal.Lostutter told The Associated Press in 2013 that he posted the video on the fan website RollRedRoll, but he said someone else hacked into the website. He also said he could end up going to jail longer than the two convicted of raping the girl. The indictment alleges Lostutter and the other hacker gained access to password-protected administrator account of the website. Later, Lostutter filmed a video of himself in a Guy Fawkes mask and issued threats that he would disclose the personal identifying information of Steubenville High School students, the indictment said.Lostutter was ordered to appear before a federal judge in Lexington on Aug. 9.Lostutter did not reply Friday to an email. The indictment issued Thursday says he faces up to 16 years in prison if convicted.Bloggers and hacker activists alleged a cover-up in Steubenville after the rape. The suspicions hinged on the presence of other students when the attack happened, including at least two who captured it on their cellphones.Three teen witnesses were granted immunity from prosecution by a judge to allow them to testify against the two players. The two players were sentenced to juvenile detention.
