If you google Padukone, the search engine throws up over 1.6 million hits. Of these, a little over a million are for movie star Deepika Padukone, compared to less than half that for Prakash Padukone, her father, who transformed the profile of badminton in the country when he became the first Indian to win the All England title, the sports most prestigious tournament and one comparable to Wimbledon in its aura, in 1980.Padukones win came more than 100 years after badminton was introduced to, and then became the rage in, British India.On August 22, 1873, the Manchester Guardian carried a curious bit of news in an item on the British Empires Kashgar Mission. It said that the game of badminton had taken Indian society by storm. Proof of this was readily available in the pages of the Times of India of 1874. The newspapers correspondent from Mahabaleshwar reported that the hill town had gone badminton mad. The woods are deserted, and old and young spend their mornings and evenings in dark spots, playing this evidently fascinating game. The correspondent, however, disapproved of the obsession with badminton, saying that a good healthful gallop, or a walk was far more beneficial to the young, especially girls.The correspondents views evidently did not have too many takers, since badmintons popularity, especially in western India, grew by leaps and bounds.From the 1930s, an all India championship and a Western India championship were held regularly. But he has really struggled recently so I would say Djokovic and Monfils. I think the Frenchman will be a great addition this year. He has the personality to be able to perform and has the game to be able to perform.Petch - Djokovic v MonfilsGoing on head to heads, the most interesting match-up will be one which Novak is not involved in. Given his dominant head-to-head record against everyone else in the group, he should feel very good about things and that should give him a lift the draw coming in here. Im definitely looking forward to Novak against Gael, if Gael is fit and healthy. I think he certainly has become more consistent, so I think it will be the match the everyone will remember.Annabel - Djokovic v MonfilsI think this match because of what happened at the US Open. It was such an extraordinary match in terms of the goings on - it was just bizarre. He was trying to physiologically get into his head and he did. I just think with what happened with Milos pulling out in the semis at the Paris Masters, and although he played well last week, I think he was won five and lost five out of his previous 10 matches, so Im going to Gael.Petch - Dominic ThiemI do feel as though he has the fire power and foot speed to hurt players. He needs to serve big, rather than kick it in. He needs to use that first serve that he has. Stewart or Arian Foster for FLEX in a PPR league?- Fantasy League (@kickingkeatings) October 16, 2016Jonathan Stewart has a 94 rating in my matchup points category that measures schedule favorability on a 0-100 scale, with 100 being the most favorable. Arian Foster has 17 points on that scale, as Pittsburghs rushing defense has been very good for most of this season. Add that Foster is more of an injury question mark than Stewart, and Stewart is the selection.#StartSitESPN Should I start Brandin Cooks at Carolina. Or start Odell Beckham Jr. at New York this week?- BrandonVorhis75 (@brandonvorhis) October 16, 2016Brandin Cooks is facing a Carolina secondary that wont have any of its top three cornerbacks from the start of the season in todays lineup. That gives him a 90 rating in my matchup points category, or near the top of that metrics 100-point scale. Beckham has 55 matchup points, which is an above-average mark but one nowhere near as strong as Cooks total. That disparity makes Cooks the selection. -- KC#FFNow #StartSitESPN Which WR Sammie Coates or Michael Crabtree?- Deelishizkat (@DeelishizKat) October 16, 2016Coates has a highly favorable matchup against Miami, but he also has a hand laceration that required stiches and a broken finger. Crabtree has racked up nine or more points in every game and has four touchdowns over the past two weeks, so hes nearly matchup-proof. Hes also not battling any reported injuries, so consider Crabtree the selection here. -- KC#StartSitESPN Isiah Crowell or Tevin Coleman?- raju mudhar (@rajumudhar) October 16, 2016An ESPN Insider article I wrote earlier this week detailed how Coleman has gained only 5.3 yards per carry on rushing plays where he is given good blocking (a metric known as GBYPA). That is less than half of the 11.4 GBYPA Devonta Freeman has posted this year. That disparity is why Freeman is going to get a lot more carries than Coleman. Since Isaiah Crowell leads the league in GBYPA (12.3), he has a lot more upside than Coleman even before factoring in Colemans tough matchup at Seattle, so start Crowell. -- KCMarcus Mariota against CLE or Andrew Luck against HOU? #StartSitESPN- Hustle Marsalice (@Flex_Ryan) October 16, 2016Given the highly favorable matchup against the Browns, it is possible Marcus Mariota throws a lot of passes and repeats last weeks point total. The problem in relying on that is the Titans like to lean on the power rushing game and they will be able to do that against Cleveland. Andrew Luck is a pass-first quarterback facing a Texans defense missing one of its starting safeties. Those factors make Luck the selection. -- KC#StartSitESPN Cam Newton or Russell Wilson. Seattle weather a factor?- Dan Ball (@ball_dan) October 16, 2016Given how incredibly favorable the matchup against New Orleans is (83 on my 0-100 matchup points scale), Cam Newton might even be the start even if there were 50 mph winds inside of the Superdome. Since Benjamin was able to practice on a limited basis on Friday, it likely indicates the questionable status is not as daunting as it looks. The advice is to play for upside and put Benjamin in the lineup. -- KCShould I start the Tenn Defense or Pittsburgh? #StartSitESPN- Bilal Kosovac (@bilal_kosovac) October 16, 2016Pittsburgh has a very favorable matchup against Miami (70 matchup points on my 0-100 matchup rating scale) but the Titans have an even more favorable matchup against Cleveland (a perfect 100 matchup points score). Chicago is coming off of a game where they allowed the Colts tight ends to post eight receptions for 58 yards and a touchdown. Hilton practiced fully on Friday, so his questionable designation doesnt look to be a concern.
