Formula Ones new investor Liberty Media has reiterated its intention to expand the calendar beyond 21 races, with Las Vegas among the targets for a grand prix in the coming years.Liberty Media is due to complete its takeover of Formula One in early 2017 and is hoping to bring the sport to new audiences around the world. The calendar currently stands at a record 21 races, which already presents logistical headaches for the sport and is seen as the limit by many teams based on current staffing levels. However, much of Formula Ones revenues -- which are shared with the teams -- come from race sanctioning fees and Liberty Medias CEO Greg Maffei sees an expanding calendar as a potential area for growth. There is a general line of interest if you increase the number of races to a point, Maffei was as saying quoted by Reuters. The FIA makes more money, the teams make more money, we make more money.Obviously there is a limit on how much you can do just getting the cars around the world, but I think we can expect to grow the amount of races to a mild degree. The United States is seen as a potential area for growth under Liberty Media ownership, with the American company making no secret of its desire to introduce more rounds on home turf. Las Vegas has long been rumoured as a potential venue for a street race and Maffei said the city is near the top of his wishlist.I particularly like the idea of a night race in Las Vegas, he said. Wayne Mardle says Gary Anderson is too good to not reach the Premier League play-offs despite a second consecutive defeat in the event. After missing the opening week in Leeds through illness, the world champion was back in Newcastle last Thursday but lost out to Michael van Gerwen.Another tough fixture was on the cards in Dublin and despite matching Phil Taylor throughout, the Flying Scotsman was far from his best and was just edged out by the Power. Wright goes top in Dublin Premier League night three report Only Robert Thornton sits below Anderson in the Premier League table after the opening three weeks, but Mardle believes there is nothing to worry about for the defending champion who has also claimed the last two world crowns.Im not concerned about Gary, he is too good. He is going to make the play-offs, there are not four players in this tournament better than him, Mardle said.I dont think there is any danger of him not making the play-offs. He just he hasnt got off to a good start.Next up for Anderson in Aberdeen next week is Raymond van Barneveld and Mardle believes he has the game to get the points that will take him through to the knockout stages. All it is about now for him is accumulating points. He has got Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen out of the way and know he has got to tear into the others and pick up points, Mardle added. Premier League recap Night Three as it happened in Dublin He will be concerned but he wont be bothered [about no points from first two games].There is always that I need to win, I want to win but Gary the panicker that used to be maybe two years ago, I dont think he exists any more.It wasnt an off game - he threw a lot of good darts but a lot of stray ones. And a lot of darts he was releasing came out of the hand flat and he wasnt releasing properly as we are used to seeing from him.Thats why he got punished Phil played well and Gary was just slightly off. The Canucks had been outscored 32-12 during the streak, which followed four straight wins to begin the season. Its a team game so everyone has to chip in, said Canucks left wing Loui Eriksson, who had zero goals in 13 games before Tuesday. I think everyone did that tonight. We knew we were playing a good team.Alexandre Burrows scored twice in the third period for Vancouver. Henrik Sedin and Sven Baertschi each had a goal and an assist for the Canucks, who had 11 players get a point.I thought we played the right way, said Burrows, who had not scored in 10 games. We did a lot of good things defensively at the lines. We pressured a really good team, a fast team, and on the D side, we made some good plays, good reads. Virginia Tech will pay homage to Frank Beamers attention to special teams when the Hokies play their first game in 30 years without the Hall of Fame coach on the sidelines. This week, with Beamers approval, a member of the Hokies special teams will wear Beamers retired No. 25 jersey instead of the unidentified players regular number in the season opener against Liberty. In subsequent weeks, the No. 25 jersey will be worn by Virginia Techs special teams player of the week.I do not know whos going to wear it, before you even ask, first-year Hokies coach Justin Fuente said. But its something that I think shows great pride in the past and pays tribute to the way ball has been played around here for some time. Its something our kids will be excited about as well.Excited enough to want to improve their chances of getting a turn in Beamers jersey.Yeah, I would love to wear that jersey, running back Sam Rogers said. Im going to be fighting to play on any special teams I can. Whatever I can do for this team, Im going to be doing. The more they let me do, the more Im going to be happy to do. If Ive got a chance to go down on kickoff and wear No. 25, thatd be awesome.During his 29-year career at his alma mater, Beamer served as his own special teams coach, and his teams scored 55 touchdowns on special teams, blocked 67 punts, 41 field goal attempts and 28 extra point attempts. The ability to turn games around quickly on special teams was a huge element of Virginia Techs rise in football prominence.Im really honored that a member of the special teams will get to wear my old number every week, Beamer said in a release from the school. Of course, its not just a recognition of me -- its about all those coaches and kids who made special teams part of our identity at Virginia Tech.Defensive coordinator Bud Foster is a big fan of the effort to honor Beamer.I think its really, really cool, said Foster, who was with Beamer for all his 29 seasons at Virginia Tech and remained on staff when Fuente was hired. When coach Fuente brought that up, I was thrilled for coach. It makes a statement about what we have done here. Coast Fuente is building on what we have done in the past with some traditions as well as adding in his twist.Obviously, special teams and `Beamerball was a big part of our success, and I can tell you right now, that is not going to change as far as what our approach is to the football games.Fuente said he will tell the team and announce who will wear the jersey this week on Thursday. He may find that with just 12 games on the schedule, he might have to disappoint some who would like a turn.I think its special, wide receiver Isaiah Ford said. Everyone knows how much coach Beamer means to this program and means to us, especially me individually, the affect he had on my life. I think that its a cool tradition to kind of live on and to kind of honor him on the field. PULLMAN, Wash. -- After Washington States Gabe Marks caught the touchdown pass that made him the leading receiver in the history of the Pacific-12 Conference, the referees yelled at him to return the football. No, its my ball, he told the refs, in a move that surprised no one who knows the fiery receiver. If quarterback Luke Falk is the field general of the Air Raid offense, Marks is the emotional and intellectual voice of the No. 23 Cougars. It was little surprise that the 295th reception of Marks stellar career, breaking the Pac-12 mark of 294 set by Nelson Spruce of Colorado, was a touchdown in Washington States 56-21 rout of California on Nov. 12.The touchdown works out better as a story, Marks said after the game.I wasnt feeling all blushy and stuff, all romantic or anything, Marks said when asked how he felt about the Pac-12 receptions record. It was cool. I appreciated the cheers from the fans and everything and the acknowledgement for it.The senior caught six more passes in Washington States loss to No. 9 Colorado last Saturday, bringing his career total to 301. He is just the 13th receiver in FBS history, and the only one from the Pac-12, with more than 300 catches. His 3,314 yards are ninth-most in league history.Marks is sure to be a prime target when the Cougars host rival No. 6 Washington on Friday in the annual Apple Cup, with the winner claiming the Pac-12 North title and a shot at the Rose Bowl. While some athletes downplay the pursuit of records, Marks said chasing the Pac-12 receptions standard gave him an extra spark.I used that energy to make plays, Marks said. It doesnt make me nervous or anything.Offensive lineman Cole Madison noted Marks brings extra energy to the team and will call out players who arent putting out the required effort.Gabe Marks is a real football player, Madison said. The 6-foot, 190-pound Marks grew up in Venice, California, where he was a star player despite his modest size. He was 9 years old when his father was killed in a drive-by shooting in Los Angeles in 2004.When Leach was hired to rebuild the woeful Washington State program after the 2011 season, one of the first scholarships he offered was to Marks.Mike Leach is really cool, Marks said. I committed before I even took a visit. Its been a long time coming and it is a great team award, Leach said of the receiving record, noting the quarterbacks, blockers and other receivers involved in plays where Marks caught passes. He is a great representative. Hes very competitive, hangs in there, battles away.Marks played immediately, catching 49 passes for 560 yards as a freshman. He caught 74 passes for 807 yards as a sophomore. But entering his junior year, he was behind Isiah Myers on the depth chart. He also suffered from health problems, and the decision was made to redshirt. He chafed at times, but the decision was for the best, Marks said.Marks had a breakout season last year, watching 104 passes for 1,192 yards and 15 touchdowns as Washington posted a 9-4 record. He was an All-Pac-12 selection.Asked to identify the key components of the Cougars, Marks riffed on an improved running game, positive chemistry and the defenses ability to generate turnovers. He also noted the play of quarterback Luke Falk, who Marks tabbed earlier as the Messiah.Everything is going according to plan, Marks said. Whats not to like?Marks and Leach have been known to jaw at each other on the sidelines, but they have a mutual respect. We talk about a lot of things, Marks said.Hes a brilliant guy, Leach said. He thinks independently. He would actually be a pretty good coach someday.Marks had a few games left in his college career, and he wants to make the most of them. Its about just winning games now, Marks said. Ive kind of done everything that I can do in my reach. He was asked how it felt to be tied for first place in the Pac-12 North. Its better than sitting in last place in mid-November with nothing to play for, Marks said. That would suck. Will Dissly Jersey . It just didnt show when he hit the ice. An older and wiser Tom Hawkins is looking to play a leading role in Geelongs finals campaign after tasting premiership success as a youngster in a seasoned AFL team.Hawkins was 21-years-old when he was part of the Cats 2009 grand final-winning side and 23 when Geelong defeated Collingwood in the 2011 grand final. He had veterans like Steve Johnson, James Kelly, Cameron Ling, Paul Chapman and Matthew Scarlett to look up to then and he hopes he might be able to provide a similar example to current Cats youngsters over the next month.I was fortunate to arrive at the footy club when I did, Hawkins said.I won premierships with a group of guys who were at a great age to win flags - from 25 to 30 - and I came in and rode their success more than anything. Now as a senior player at 28 I would love nothing more than to be a part of a successful side again .dddddddddddd.. its something that drives me pretty strongly.I know its the same with a few others.Hawkins has hit form at the right time of the season, having kicked six goals in the round 23 demolition of Melbourne. The Cats take on old rivals Hawthorn in a mouthwatering qualifying final next Friday night and Hawkins said the triple-premiers are the team to beat.Everyone wants to knock them off, he said.I cant see anything but them being the hunted. Soon, well find out exactly what the road to Columbus, Ohio, looks like. The NCAA volleyball selection show will air at 9 p.m. ET Sunday on ESPNU, and some teams already have their automatic bids in hand. But there is still a lot to be decided in this last week of the regular season.Pac-12 dramaIt seems a bit hard to believe, but UCLA -- the only Pac-12 volleyball team to win a national championship in the past 10 seasons -- has not won a conference title since 1999. That could change this week, but it wont be easy.No. 7 Washington and No. 8 UCLA are atop the Pac-12 at 14-4, with No. 12 Stanford at 13-5. They are the only teams that still have a chance to claim the league title or a share of it.The schedule has worked out quite well in regard to intrigue: UCLA faces Washington in Seattle on Wednesday (10 p.m. ET, Pac-12 Network). The winner of that match moves into the drivers seat, but then both have to face in-state rivals Saturday in their regular-season finales. Washington will be at No. 25 Washington State, while UCLA will host USC. Meanwhile, Stanford finishes at home against No. 19 Oregon and Cal.The Pac-12 officially began conference play for womens volleyball in 1986. Stanford has won 14 league titles outright and shared two others. UCLA is next with six outright, but all of those came between 1986 and 1993. The Bruins shared the title in 1999 with Stanford. Washington has won three outright and shared last year with USC.Huskers look to close out strongReigning NCAA champion Nebraska is in the No. 1 spot in the AVCA poll for the sixth straight week, and the Huskers are in position to claim their second Big Ten title.Nebraska joined the conference in 2011 and won the Big Ten that year. Since then, the title has gone to Penn State (2012 and 13), Wisconsin (2014) and Minnesota (2015).The Huskers are 26-1 overall and 17-1 in the Big Ten, their only defeat coming at home to Ohio State on Oct. 1. Since that loss, the Huskers have won 14 matches in a row, losing just five sets in that stretch. The Huskers dont yet have the conference title wrapped up, though. No. 3 Wisconsin is 16-2 and No. 2 Minnesota 15-3. Nebraska plays at Minnesota on Wednesday and finishes at home Saturday against No. 18 Michigan. Wisconsin plays at Minnesota on Saturday.Jayhawks making historyThe Kansas volleyball program has been around 41 years. The Jayhawks had never won a conference title in either the old Big Eight or the current Big 12. But that changed Saturday, despite the fact that star Kelsie Payne was sidelined with an ankle injury.No. 4 Kansas beat Iowa State 3-2 and the Jayhawks celebrated clinching at least a share of the Big 12 title. The Jayhawks can win it outright Saturday when they finish the regular season at Baylor. Thats no gimme, though. The Bears are 9-5 and in third place in the Big 12.The Cyclones, now 8-6 and in fourth place, were coming off an upset against Texas the week before. That outcome greatly helped Kansas since it was the Longhorns second Big 12 loss. But Iowa State wasnt able to overcome Kansas; the Jayhawks prevailed 15-9 in the final set.No. 5 Texas, which has won or shared nine Big 12 titles, took over domination of the conference when Nebraska moved to the Big Ten in 2011. Texas had won every Big 12 title since, five in a row, until now.The Longhorns still can get a share of the championship this year, though, if they beat visiting West Virginia on Saturday and Kansas falls at Baylor. Kansas and Texas split their meetings this season, with each winning at home.Mutual respectMissouri and Florida had a five-set duel Sunday, which was exactly what you might have expected from two teams battling for the SEC title. The Tigers won the final set 15-10, after which Florida coach Mary Wise -- disappointed as she was that her Gators lost -- sought out Missouri senior Carly Kan to give her a hug and congratulations.Kan had season highs with 25 kills and 21 digs for the Tigers, who defeated the Gators in Columbia, Missouri, for the third year in a row.So heres how the SEC race sets up in the final week: No. 23 Kentucky is 15-2 and has just one conference game left: Wednesday at Tennessee on ESPNU (9 p.m. ET). No. 9 Florida and No. 22 Missouri are both 14-2, while Texas A&M (which won the SEC title last year) is 13-3.Missouri (at Georgia, vs. Tennessee), Florida (vs. Auburn, at Arkansas) and Texas A&M (vs. LSU, at Auburn) have two matches left. So its still possible that the SEC could finish in a four-way tie for first.Tournament timeWhile the Power Five conferences and a few others dont have their own volleyball tournaments, several leagues do. Heres some of the more notable conference tourney news. Winners receive an automatic berth into the NCAA tournament.Conference USA: No. 20 Western Kentucky became the first volleyball team to win three consecutive Conference USA tournament titles, defeating Rice 3-2 Sunday behind Rachel Andersons career-high 31 kills. Western Kentucky has won 21 matches in a row.Atlantic 10: No. 24 Dayton extended its winning streak to 19 by beating Saint Louis 3-2 in the Atlantic 10 final Sunday. Its the seventh time in the past eight years that the Flyers have won the conference title.Missouri Valley: Missouri State, on a 16-match winning streak, will be the top seed in this weeks six-team Missouri Valley tournament, hosted by Northern Iowa Thursday through Saturday.Big East: The four-team tournament runs Friday to Saturday in Indianapolis. No. 21 Creighton is the top seed; the Bluejays advanced to the NCAA regional semifinals last year. They are on an 18-match winning streak. Basket Adidas Alexander Wang Femme . Ivanovic was leading 7-5, 1-0 when Hantuchova withdrew after falling 0-40 behind in the second game. The match started slowly for Ivanovic, who surrendered her first two serves as Hantuchova took a 5-3 lead. Acheter Adidas Superstar Pas Cher . Louis. To which I would say two things: 1. Where there is smoke, there is or perhaps has been a little fire. Or, in other words, the two teams would appear to have at least spoken. And spoken is defined as one calling the other to inquire, no more, no less. http://www.swiftrunpascher.fr/chaussure-swift-run.html . Brazilian national coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has confirmed that the veteran goalkeeper is set to join Toronto on loan, saying it will help him be ready for the World Cup. Adidas Gazelle Rose/Blanche Femme . In the lead up - which seemed to begin the moment Mike Geiger blew the whistle in Houston last Thursday night - the Impact rumour mill went into overdrive. American Matt Kuchar, ahead by two strokes with four to play and even with Scott with one to go, double-bogeyed the 18th after taking two shots to get out of a bunker.School children invited to Manchester Uniteds Aon Training Complex in Carrington had a day to remember when the entire first-team squad joined them for an afternoon of activities. It was always going to be a memorable experience as they were told they were going to meet the clubs Foundation coaches for the afternoon. What they did not know, however, was that the United players would also be on hand at the event straight after training ahead of the weekend game with Leicester City, live on Super Sunday. The clubs Foundation has been in operation for almost a decade and has established a programme called #Schoolsunited involving 13 partner schools around Greater Manchester. Anthony Martial joined Manchester United team-mates at the clubs Foundation event We work in some of the most disadvantaged areas and, for some of them, Old Trafford is a dream, to even get to see a game, but to actually come and mix and engage with the first-team players is something they dream about, said hub manager Dave Chapman.Every child within this room now, every student, every participant has earned the right to be here. Weve got some children here who wouldnt speak to anybody, their confidence was shot, they were so low.And then a year or two into our partnership theyre here mixing with people from the other side of Manchester. The children from each of the schools were partnered with a member of Louis Van Gaals squad for the afternoon. Ashley Young takes part in the Manchester United Foundation activities And while the likes of captain Wayne Rooney and birthday boy Juan Mata have made their name on Old Traffords hallowed turf, this was an opportunity to see them doing something different, from playing table tennis to answering tricky questions from potential young journalists in a specially designed interview booth. One of the victims up for interview was midfielder Ander Herrera.Of course, of course because sometimes they are so sincere, he said. Thats why sometimes they make us feel a little bit in a problem but its very nice to answer questions because they are all fans, they are the future of Manchester United. The Foundations work is not just limited to working with schools, however, as the players soon discovered. Ander Herrera says Manchester United are aiming to prevent Leicester from winning the Premier League title at Old Trafford While Manchester Uniteds focus on the pitch is a top four finish in the Premier League and a first FA Cup final win since 2004, what about what the players do and eat when they are not playing or training?Something to chew on is a 10-week programme designed to educate youngsters about being healthy in a bid to tackle rising obesity rates. They are taught how to choose, cook and eat safe and healthy food, the sort of thing Manchester Uniteds superstars take for granted at Carrington, unless they have to make their sandwiches themselves, as Herrera discovered.I am the one who has to cook for the children today, he said. I am not so good at cooking so I will try to do my best but I think we have to teach them to eat in a good way. I think its very important for their health, for their lives and I will try to do my best! Manchesster United players join in at the clubs Foundation event It is not just about diet and nutrition as the Foundation is also looking at how to bolster the confidence of primary school children in the north west between the ages of four and eight.ddddddddddddMove with Manchester United has been devised to help improve their agility, balance and co-ordination in a bid to counter a growing trend that sees less youngsters playing outdoors.Herrera and his team-mates got involved in a session of jumping, balance and throwing, but how hard is it getting to grips with new training regimes for Manchester United players themselves and who are the worst trainers?I cannot say names about that but the only thing I can say is that its very important to do sport, the Spaniard said.Nowadays we are living in a generation of computers and video games but I think that its more healthy when you play football and you train, you make friends and thats what we try to do, to convince them that sport is very important. Anthony Martial joins in with the school children invited to Carrington After a tricky season that still has the potential to be a successful one for Manchester United, this was an afternoon where the players were able to put the scrutiny to one side. While it is the young players who have captured the eye on many occasions, plenty of their more experienced team-mates are parents themselves and literally jumped, ran and threw themselves into the activities. But it is their status as footballers that made it such a special occasion for the children invited to Carrington, and a big game beckons at the weekend, with Leicester, not Manchester United, in with a chance of being crowned Premier League champions at Old Trafford - something that only happened three times under Sir Alex Ferguson.First of all I have to say that we think about Manchester United, we are still in the race, we have to be in the top four its very important for us, Herrera said. After that it is true that we are playing against Leicester, a very good side who are playing fantastic. But we dont want them to win the title at Old Trafford - I think they deserve to win the league but I hope they can do it at home. Leicester can win the Premier League title with a win at Old Trafford We are Manchester United and we have to win because we have to be in the Champions League next season. Leicester can win the league at Old Trafford but it is not our business. Our business is Manchester United, we have to fight until the end for the top four and thats what we are going to do.After that if Leicester wants to win the league at home they will have to play very good because I think we are in a good moment. The Manchester United Foundation is about to celebrate its 10th anniversary. In the past year it has reached almost 10,000 school children and has seen 587 of them gain qualifications. As the United players bade farewell to the youngsters at the Academys indoor training centre, there is another landmark that beckons next month. It is almost 12 years since Manchester United last won the FA Cup and from the current squad only Juan Mata has lifted the trophy, and that was with Chelsea. So, like the children who enjoyed a big surprise at Carrington, they are hoping it will be a day to remember at Wembley on Saturday, May 21. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Ashleigh Johnson and KK Clark joined a couple of Brazilian dancers for a samba lesson. Maggie Steffens grabbed an American flag for the party on the pool deck. One by one, the players draped their gold medals around the neck of grieving coach Adam Krikorian. The U.S. saved its best for last, and Italy never stood a chance.Johnson made nine saves, Kiley Neushul scored three goals on four shots and the United States routed Italy 12-5 on Friday for its second straight Olympic gold medal in womens water polo.To play as well as we did today in that moment and that atmosphere in a gold-medal game when youve been thinking about this for the last four years is just, its a dream come true, Krikorian said.Makenzie Fischer and Rachel Fattal each had two goals for the Americans, who stretched their win streak to 22 games with their sixth victory in Rio de Janeiro by a combined score of 73-32.I think we really did change the game, said Johnson, who was voted the top goaltender of the tournament. We played completely different than the games ever been played before. Really fast, intelligent, its really fun to watch and its great to play.Russia took home the bronze, beating Hungary 19-18 on penalty shots. Its the first womens water polo medal for Russia since 2000.Neushul and Steffens each gave Krikorian a big hug as they left in the final minute, and Neushul patted him on the head. When the final seconds ticked off, Krikorian walked over to congratulate Italy coach Fabio Conti, and then was tackled into the pool by a couple of his jubilant players. In another Olympics dominated by U.S. women, Steffens -- the MVP and probably the best player in the world -- and her teammates shined as brightly as any of them. The water polo tournament shifted to the Olympic Aquatics Stadium following the swimming competition, and the array of Pac-12 stars that dominate the U.S. roster picked up right where Katie Ledecky and company left off, wearing down their opponents with superior speed, athleticism and strength. The U.S. women were the overwhelming favorites all along -- and they played like it. The 12 goals and seven-goal margin were records for the Olympic final.USA is, in this moment, a team of another universe, Conti said. The Americans pounded Brazil 13-3 before outslugging Hungary 14-10 in the semifinals. They held the lead after 23 of their 24 quarters and trailed for a total of only 44 seconds -- in the first quarter against Hungary on Wednesday. Its one of the best teams Ive ever been a part of, and Ive been a part of some really amazing teams, Neushul said. The team is so versatile, so many different threats. We have speed. We have size. We have athleticism, and I think this team was one of the first teams to display all those different styles in one team.By the time Krikorian and the U.S. staff hit the pool for a celebratory swim, the Americans possessed each of the major crowns in womens water polo, adding a second Olympic gold to their world championship, World Cup and World League Super Final titles. The scene after the final was the top of an emotional roller coaster for Krikorian, who rushed home before the United States first game to be with his family after the sudden death of his brother Blake, a former water polo player at UCLA and beloved Silicon Valley entrepreneur. Before departing for California, Krikorian met with his players and urged them to make the most of their Olympic experience. He returned in time for an opening 11-4 victory over Spain, and then nearly broke down in tears while talking about his brother after the win.Blakes 49th birthday would have been Thursday, and Krikorians wife, Anicia Mendez, surprised him in Rio to be there with him for the sad day and then the final. Its not about me and its about the team, and that has actually helped me and thats made it actually fairly easy, he said, and that doesnt take away from the love I have for my family or my brother. Its more of a sign of respect and love that I think we all have for each other.Krikorian brushed away any talk of winning it all for him and his family, insisting Blake himself would think it was a ludicrous notion, but his players pledged their support for their mourning coach. And they delivered with their play -- all the way to the gold medal.Thats what were about, Steffens said, is going out there, having fun and playing the best water polo we can.---Jay Cohen can be reached at http://www.twitter.com/jcohenap Scontate Air Max 97 Italy Flag Metallic Oro/Bianco-University Rosso . Evander Holyfield, the only four-time heavyweight world titleholder in boxing history and one of the most popular and exciting fighters of his time, is one of three newcomers to this years ballot for the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Also on the ballot for the first time in the modern category, which is for fighters whose last bout was no earlier than 1989, are a pair of popular former three-division titleholders with all-action styles: Marco Antonio Barrera and the late Johnny Tapia.Full members of the Boxing Writers Association of America and a panel of international boxing historians began receiving their ballots this week. They are due back by Oct. 31, with results of the voting due to be announced in December. Those elected will be enshrined June 11 during the 28th annual induction ceremonies at the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York. To be eligible, fighters must not have boxed for at least five years.Electors can vote for up to five candidates, but only the top three will be elected. The three newcomers, all in their first year of eligibility, appear to be the likely candidates who will earn selection. The Real Deal Holyfield (44-10-2, 29 KOs), who fought from 1984 to 2011, is as close to a first-ballot lock as it gets, thanks to his record for heavyweight titles and a series of epic mega-fights against other Hall of Famers, including an all-time great trilogy with Riddick Bowe and two upset victories against Mike Tyson, the second of which famously cost Holyfield a chunk of his ear when Tyson bit it off in a disqualification loss.Im honored, Holyfield said after being informed Tuesday night by ESPN.com that he was on the ballot. What can you say when youve done what Ive done? It do speak for itself. I had a good amateur career, became the first undisputed cruiserweight champ of the world and then undisputed heavyweight champ. I fought them all. I fought everyone who was the best at my time of boxing and did real well. If youre the best, youre going to be in the Hall of Fame.I fought everybody. I didnt make up excuses on why I shouldnt fight this guy or that guy. I fought everyone I was supposed to. Im glad I played by the rules and became the champ. I fought and did my very best. After claiming a bronze medal in the 1984 Olympics, Holyfield raced to a cruiserweight world title in his 12th professional fight, winning a 15-round split decision against future Hall of Famer Dwight Muhammad Qawi in a bruising 1986 battle that remains one of the greatest in division history.Holyfield unified two cruiserweight belts by third-round knockout of Ricky Parkey in 1987. Holyfield demolished Qawi later that year in the fourth round of a rematch and then knocked out Carlos De Leon in the eighth round in 1988 to claim a third belt and become the first undisputed champion in cruiserweight history.Holyfield then moved up to heavyweight, where he really made his mark. In 1990, he knocked out Tyson conqueror James Buster Douglas in the third round to win the undisputed championship. Among his three successful defenses were decisions against aging legends George Foreman and Larry Holmes, but Holyfield lost the title by decision to Bowe in their first hellacious bout in 1992. A year later, Holyfield regained the title by outpointing Bowe in the rematch. In his next fight, Holyfield lost the title to Michael Moorer by decision and, two fights later, got knocked out in the eighth round of the rubber match against Bowe. Many thought Holyfield was finished when he got a shot at Tyson, who had regained a piece of the title, in 1996. Holyfield was a huge underdog but stopped Tyson in the 11th round of a tremendous fight. Seven months later, they met again, and Holyfield won by third-round disqualification when Tyson melted down and bit off a chunk of his ear. Then Holyfield knocked out Moorer, who had regained a belt, in the eighth round to unify two titles.?In one of the biggest fights in heavyweight history, Holyfield received a controversial draw in his 1999 showdown with fellow champion Lennox Lewis for the undisputed title. Most had Lewis winning. Lewis did get the decision when they met in an immediate rematch later that year.In August 2000, Holyfield notched his last big win when he outpointed John Ruiz to win back a piece of the title for the unprecedented fourth time.Holyfield fought for another decade and got two more title shots, but he suffered decision losses to Sultan Ibragimov in 2007 and Nikolay Valuev in 2008, albeit in a fight many thoughht Holyfield won.dddddddddddd.I became four-time heavyweight champ of the world, said Holyfield, who was 18-9-2 with 10 knockouts against titleholders and Hall of Famers. Would have been five if they gave me the decision I deserved against the Russian guy.Barrera (67-7, 44 KOs), known as the Baby-Faced Assassin, is one of the greatest fighters in Mexicos rich boxing history. He went 21-4 with 12 KOs in world title fights and won titles at junior featherweight, featherweight and junior lightweight during his 1989-2011 career. He was also 16-7 with 10 KOs against titleholders and Hall of Famers. He won his historic trilogy against bitter rival and countryman Erik Morales, who will be eligible for the Hall of Fame next year. Although Barrera lost the first junior featherweight unification bout by split decision in the 2000 fight of the year, he outpointed Morales to win a featherweight title in the 2002 rematch and then took a junior lightweight title from him in the 2004 rubber match.Barrera also beat the faded Tapia by decision in 2002, but his biggest win came when, as a heavy underdog, he won a clear decision against Hall of Famer Naseem Hamed in 2001. Barrera later lost a pair of fights to Manny Pacquiao and one to Juan Manuel Marquez before winning his final two bouts and walking away to a career in boxing broadcasting for Mexican network Azteca.Tapia (59-5-2, 30 KOs), who led a troubled life of addiction before his death at age 45 in 2012, still managed to win five world titles at junior bantamweight, bantamweight and featherweight during his 1988-2011 career. He put on many entertaining fights despite his constant personal turmoil, going 11-3 with two knockouts against Hall of Famers and titleholders. Many consider him the best junior bantamweight in the history of the weight class. He lost 3? years of his career in the early 1990s while suspended over cocaine use but came back to win his first world title in 1994, knocking out Henry Martinez in the 11th round for a vacant junior bantamweight belt. Tapia made 13 defenses, including the biggest win of his career -- a decision in a unification bout with bitter crosstown rival Danny Romero that was so divisive in their community that it wound up being held in Las Vegas because of security concerns in their hometown. In 1998, Tapia beat Nana Konadu for a bantamweight title but lost it to Paulie Ayala by disputed decision in the 1999 fight of the year. Tapia rebounded to win another bantamweight belt in his next fight, outpointing Jorge Elicier Julio in 2000 before losing another close decision later in the year in a non-title rematch with Ayala. In 2002, when Tapia was past his prime, he outpointed Manuel Medina to win a featherweight belt. The holdovers on the 30-man modern ballot are Yuri Arbachakov, Ayala, Nigel Benn, Sot Chitalada, Donald Curry, Chris Eubank, Leo Gamez, Genaro Hernandez, Julian Jackson, Santos Laciar, Rocky Lockridge, Miguel Happy Lora, James Buddy McGirt, Henry Maske, Darius Michalczewski, Sung-Kil Moon, Moorer, Orzubek Gussie Nazarov, Sven Ottke, Vinny Pazienza, Gilberto Roman, Gianfranco Rosi, Samuel Serrano, Meldrick Taylor, Fernando Vargas, Wilfredo Vazquez Sr. and Ratanapol Sor Vorapin.Candidates will also be elected in the observer, non-participant and old-timer categories.Puerto Rican great Esteban DeJesus (58-5, 33 KOs), the late former lightweight champion from the late 1970s, is perhaps the most notable name on the 40-person old-timer ballot, which is for fighters whose last bout was no earlier than 1943 and no later than 1988. One will be elected. The two newcomers to the 30-person observer ballot are well known to boxing fans: Showtime broadcasters Barry Tompkins and Steve Farhood, who partner on the ShoBox: The New Generation series. But Tompkins also had a long run as the blow-by-blow announcer for HBO during the 1980s and called numerous big fights. Farhood has worked as an analyst on every fight since ShoBox debuted in 2001. A noted historian, Farhood founded the old KO magazine in 1980 and was editor-in-chief of The Ring magazine from 1989 to 1997.On the 35-person non-participant ballot -- three will be elected by a panel of international historians -- the most notable addition is famed ring announcer Jimmy Lennon Sr., who died in 1992. His son, Jimmy Lennon Jr., one of todays most famous ring announcers, was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2013. BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech didnt let a surprising loss five days ago linger, and they are once again atop the ACCs Coastal Division race.Jerod Evans threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third and the Hokies (5-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference) beat Miami 37-16 on Thursday night, pulling into a tie with No. 22 North Carolina atop the division as they start the second half of the regular season.Evans hit Bucky Hodges with scoring throws of 7 and 12 yards, and Travon McMillian ran for 131 yards for the Hokies. There were certain plays we put in this week that I had a feeling I was going to get the ball on, and the coaches just dialed it up, Hodges said after leading the team with seven receptions for 66 yards.Brad Kaaya threw for 323 yards and two touchdowns for the Hurricanes (4-3, 1-3), but he also was sacked eight times as they lost their third in a row. The Hokies limited Miami to 42 rushing yards on 29 carries thanks to the sacks, which cost Kaaya 55 yards.Obviously the key for us was we needed to stop the run and make Miami one-dimensional, and we were able to do that, Hokies defensive coordinator Bud Foster said. We really did a great job attacking the line of scrimmage, keeping the lanes and the gaps tight, keeping those backs in a phone booth, so to speak.Joe Yearby had a 41-yard run for the Hurricanes, but otherwise managed just 18 yards on his eight other carries. The defense was playing tough, stacking the box, he said. They did everything we expected them to do.Woody Baron had 2 1/2 sacks for Virginia Tech, and Vinny Mihota had two despite having his shoulder pop out late in the first half. Redshirt freshman defensive end Trevon Hill, who left the team Tuesday after his grandmother died and returned Wednesday night, had 1 1/2 sacks.Im not going to throw anyone under the bus, first-year Hurricanes coach Mark Richt said. Sacks have to do with a lot of things.Fullback Sam Rogers threw his first career touchdown pass in the third quarter.THE TAKEAWAYMiami: The Hurricanes have never won the Coastal Division since joining the ACC in 2004 and wont win it again this year. Their defense was supposed to be a question entering the game, and they were without three starters and had four freshmen in the starting lineup, but their inability to generate a running game put all the pressure on Kaaya, and while he put up some good numbers, an offensive line that allowed eight sacks isnt good enough to win most games against top level teams.Virginia Tech: Evans was virtually mistake-free again, and their plethora of weapons in the pass game seems to be opening up the running game as well. Evans added 98 rushing yards, including a 34-yard score, as the Hokies piled up 253 yards on the ground. The quarterback misled me sometimes, Miami defense end Joe Jackson said. I didnt do a good enough job of staying with him.POLL IMPLICATIONSApart from their 31-17 loss at Syracuse last week, the Hokies have been playing Top 25 -level football. In their other four most recent games, they have outscored Boston College, East Carolina, No. 22 North Carolina and now Miami 174-36.UP NEXTMiami visits Notre Dame next Saturday. The Fighting Irish are off this weekend, and have lost four of their last five.Virginia Tech plays its second consecutive Thursday night game when it visits Pittsburgh, which is off this weekend. TUCSON, Ariz. -- Arizona bumped DeWayne Russell, followed him wherever he went, made it difficult for the nations second-leading scorer all night long.Russell still managed to score 19 points, but the 19th-ranked Wildcats earned the victory.Arizona overcame a rash of turnovers and a disjointed-at-times offense with a hounding defense, making Russell work for everything he got in a 64-54 win over Grand Canyon on Wednesday night. It was just knowing what he wants to do, where he wants to go and eliminating that, Arizonas Kobi Simmons said of stopping Russell.Russell entered the game scoring 25.4 points per game and had 42 against No. 11 Louisville , one of the nations best defensive teams. The slightly built senior guard is the focal point of every teams defense and it was no different against Arizona. The Wildcats (9-2) used a physical tactic against Russell, chasing and bumping him all over McKale Center while holding him to 8-of-21 shooting and 1 of 7 from 3-point range.DeWaynes unbelievable, Grand Canyon coach Dan Majerle said. To be keyed on, especially with the team we have, they know hes going to be the guy getting all the shots and he finds a way to get some shots up.Arizona needed that kind of effort on a night filled with turnovers and shots that wouldnt fall. The Wildcats built a 16-point lead in the first half, but allowed the short-handed Antelopes to claw most of the way back due to a rash of turnovers.Arizona had 19 turnovers overall and struggled shooting in the second half before wearing down Grand Canyon for its 39th straight non-conference home win.Simmons scored 13 points, and Rawle Alkins added 11 points and eight rebounds for the Wildcats.I thought it was a great challenge for our players, especially our freshmen, Arizona coach Sean Miller said. Were going to run into some of this moving forward and some of the teams that play with their style, are that physical and that tough-minded are also going to be much bigger.Grand Canyon (5-5), which is in the final year of its transition to Division I, kept Loouisville within reach until late last week and did the same against Arizona.ddddddddddddRussell almost singlehandedly kept the Antelopes in the Louisville game, but had help against Arizona in one of college basketballs toughest road arenas.Russell had 11 points in the first half, helping Grand Canyon trim a 16-point deficit to 32-25 by halftime.Arizona had 12 turnovers in the first half and struggled to make shots early in the second, allowing the Antelopes to trim the lead to 44-40. Arizona tried to pull away after that, but Oscar Frayer stayed aggressive as the Wildcats keyed on Russell, scoring all of his 16 points in the second half to keep the game from being a blowout. We played really hard tonight, Russell said. Thats one thing we can definitely hang our hats on: We play hard.BIG PICTUREGrand Canyon played well against a Top 25 team for the second time in a week and should be set up well for when the WAC season starts.Arizona was not nearly as crisp as it was in a blowout win over Missouri the last time out, playing disjointedly on offense at times but well on defense.FREE THROWSArizonas size advantage led to a big disparity in free throws. The Wildcats went to the line 27 times and made 20, while the Antelopes took just 12, hitting six.SCHEDULING TOUGHMajerle has been aggressive about scheduling top-quality opponents for the Antelopes, hoping to prepare them for the jump to Division I next season while giving the program exposure.Grand Canyon opened this season at top-ranked Duke, hosted Louisville earlier this season, and previously had games against Kentucky and Indiana. This should only help us, Majerle said.UP NEXTGrand Canyon hosts Mississippi State on Saturday to kick off a four-game home stand.Arizona plays at Texas A&M on Saturday, its final road game before the Pac-12 season starts.---More AP college basketball: www.collegebasketball.ap.org and https://twitter.com/AP-Top25. CHICAGO -- The Chicago Bears dont know who their quarterback will be going forward. But they at least have one running back.Rookie Jordan Howard had a breakout game, running for a career-high 111 yards to back a solid performance by quarterback Brian Hoyer, and the Bears picked up their first win of the season with a 17-14 victory over the Detroit Lions on Sunday.I always thought we were going to win, but I wasnt expecting 100 yards, Howard said. That makes it even better. Just getting a win, Im very excited about that. The Bears were planning to use a committee approach after letting Matt Forte go as a free agent following last season. But with Jeremy Langford and KaDeem Carey hurt, it was basically a one-man show on Sunday.Howard carried 23 times and gave the Bears dormant running game a much-needed boost. He ran through defenders and exposed holes in the line -- an eye-opening performance for a running back who followed quite a path to the NFL.Howard transferred to Indiana last year after UAB shut down its program and was drafted by the Bears in the fifth round after averaging 134.8 yards rushing for the Hoosiers.I think we noticed pretty early on Jordan is a big back, coach John Fox said.We knew that coming out of the University of Indiana. I think the thing that we didnt know is the quickness of his feet and the vision that he has. I think hes outstanding and we will ride him pretty good moving forward. Here are some things learned as the Bears (1-3) also stopped a six-game home losing streak as well as a six-game slide against Detroit (1-3):WHOS AT QB? Brian Hoyer might have given Fox something to think about in filling in for the injured Jay Cutler.Hoyer threw for 302 yards and two touchdowns in his second straight start with Cutler nursing a sprained right thumb. The next game is at Indianapolis. And if Cutler is healthy, who starts?Id like to enjoy this for at least a few hours, Fox said.Hoyer shrugged off a similar question, saying, Its my role to do whatevers asked of me. Today, Im going to enjoy the victory. Whatever they say to me tomorrow, then thats what Ill prepare to do. I think thats being a professional about it.STRUGGLING LIONS: The Lions dropped their third straight, with Matthew Stafford struggling to find open receivers and a short-handed run game once again unable to get going.Stafford was 23 of 36 for 213 yards. Marvin Jones Jr. had 74 yards receiving after setting a career-high with 205 yards against Green Bay the previous week. The Lions managed just 66 yards rushing and 263 in total offense. We were just not sharp at all, coach Jim Caldwell said. There was no rhythm to it. Thats my fault.DOWN ON DEFENSE: The Lions defense clearly missed the injured Ezekiel Ansah and DeAndre Levy, considering they gave up 408 yards to a team that came into the game 27th in total offense.Ansah sprained his ankle two weeks ago in Detroits loss to Tennessee and didnt return to the game. Levy has a quadriceps injury. He missed much of last season with a hip injury.CORNERBACKS COME THROUGH: Bears cornerbacks have three interceptions, matching their total of last season.Jacoby Glenn and Deiondre Hall each picked off Stafford deep in Chicago territory on Sunday, helping Chicago beat Detroit for the first time since 2012.They were pressed into action early in the season because of injuries to Kyle Fuller (knee) and Bryce Callahan (concussion, hamstring). The other interception by a Chicago cornerback was by Tracy Porter in the opener at Houston. Fuller had two interceptions last season and Porter one.SLOW STARTS: After taking halftime leads in the first two games, the Lions have been outscored a combined 38-13 in the past two.We just have to keep fighting and keep practicing, tight end Eric Ebron said. I have no clue. We ball out all week, 100 percent effort all week and we get to Sunday and we have no idea why. Its a bad drought we have and we have to get ourselves out of there.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Black Seahawks Jerseys . -- Playing time has been limited for Maxim Tissot this season, so the Montreal Impact defender made the most of his first scoring opportunity on Saturday. Those lessons were more than enough to overwhelm the Utah Jazz. Lou Williams scored 25 points and the Hawks continued their offensive upswing as they rolled to an easy 118-85 victory over the Jazz on Friday night, winning their third straight and for the fourth time in five games.Paris, France (Sports Network) - World No. 1 superstar and former champion Serena Williams, Australian Open titlist Victoria Azarenka and last years Wimbledon runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska were a trio of winners Wednesday at the French Open. The sizzling-hot 2002 French Open winner Williams won her 26th straight match on tour by lambasting French wild card Caroline Garcia 6-1, 6-2 in only 62 minutes on Court Chatrier. "Its important for me to win easily," Williams said. "Its also important for me to play well. If I play well, it will bode well for me at Roland Garros." The 15-time Grand Slam singles champion is now 69-3 since a shocking first- round loss at the hands of French journeywoman Virginie Razzano at last years French Open. The 30-year-old Razzano came from behind to beat Slovak Zuzana Kucova 4-6, 6-2, 6-0 on Wednesday and could face Williams in a rematch in the quarterfinals if both players win two more matches this week. The 31-year-old reigning Wimbledon and U.S. Open titlist Williams is trying to reach her first French Open semifinal in 10 years. Her third-round opponent will be Romanian Sorana Cirstea. The third-seeded former No. 1 Azarenka finally played her first-round match and handled Russian Elena Vesnina 6-1, 6-4 on the famed red clay at Roland Garros, while the fourth-seeded Radwanska looked good in her second-rounder by pasting American Mallory Burdette 6-3, 6-2. Rain wreaked havoc on the schedule Tuesday, as it took four days to complete round one. "I felt like Im one of the last ones to start," Azarenka said. "It was a long wait, but I think performance-wise it was a good match." The reigning two-time Aussie Open champ will face German Annika Beck in round two. Radwanska, meanwhile, has never advanced beyond the fourth round in Paris and was a third-round upset victim here a year ago. She couldve faced her sister, Urszula, in the next round if the younger sibling, who knocked out Venus Williams in the first round, beat German Dinah Pfizenmaier on Day 4. Her German counterpart, however, prevailed in 6-3, 6-3 fashion and will next face the older Radwanska. Fifth-seeded 2012 French Open runner-up Sara Errani won her eighth match in nine tries at Roland Garros by throttling Russian Yulia Putintseva 6-1, 6-1. The gritty Italian lost to Maria Sharapova in last years French finale and will meet German Sabine Lisicki in her next outing. Seventh-seeded former Wimbledon champion and 2012 French Open semifinalist Petra Kvitova outlasted Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 to reach the second round, while eighth-seeded German Angelique Kerber landed in the third round with a 6-2, 6-2 spanking off Slovak Jana Cepelova.dddddddddddd A second-round upset came when Serb Bojana Jovanovski took out 10th-seeded struggling Dane Caroline Wozniacki 7-6 (7-2), 6-3. The former world No. 1 Wozniacki has posted only one clay-court win since early last month and has now lost before the quarterfinals in Paris six times in seven trips. Former French Open winner Ana Ivanovic moved on, as the 14th-seeded former No. 1 star whipped Frances Mathilde Johansson 6-2, 6-2. The Serbian Ivanovic captured the French title in 2008 and was the 2007 runner-up. Fifteenth-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci held off Kazakhstans Galina Voskoboeva 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, while Czech Petra Cetkovska ousted 19th-seeded Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, 20th-seeded Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro came back to beat American Shelby Rogers 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, and a 26th- seeded Cirstea subdued Swede Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-4 in the round of 64. Some other second-round results saw 29th-seeded American Varvara Lepchenko get past Ukrainian Elina Svitolina 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, a 32nd-seeded Lisicki drill Spaniard Maria-Teresa Torro-Flor 6-4, 6-0, former French Open champ Svetlana Kuznetsova come back to best Slovak Magdalena Rybarikova 1-6, 6-2, 6-2, and 19-year-old Puerto Rican Monica Puig drive out 18-year-old American Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6 (7-2). The Russian veteran Kuznetsova titled here in 2009 and was the Roland Garros runner-up in 2006. In other opening-round play involving seeds, No. 12 Maria Kirilenko of Russia rolled past fellow countrywoman Nina Bratchikova 6-0, 6-1, in-form Estonian Kaia Kanepi took out No. 23 Czech Klara Zakopalova 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, and American Jamie Hampton doused No. 25 Czech Lucie Safarova 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 9-7. Kanepi has now won six straight matches, including her clay-court title last week in Brussels. Hampton was one of 10 American women to win first-round matches this week. Additional opening-round wins came for the aforementioned Beck, Swiss Stefanie Voegele, Aussie Ashleigh Barty, last weeks Brussels runner-up Peng Shuai of China, and Slovak Anna Schmiedlova. The second round is scheduled to conclude on Thursday, including matches for the second-seeded and defending champion Sharapova and Azarenka. The former world No. 1 Sharapova will battle rising Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, while Azarenka will meet Beck. Thursdays schedule will also feature sixth-seeded Aussie Open runner-up and former French Open champion Li Na, Kvitova, ninth-seeded former U.S. Open champion and former French Open finalist Sam Stosur, and 17th-seeded American Sloane Stephens. Li will tangle with American Bethanie Mattek-Sands, while Stephens will be opposed by compatriot Vania King. CINCINNATI -- Manager Joe Maddons move was so wacky that even his own players laughed. And when it worked better than anyone could have imagined, the Cubs were celebrating again.Kris Bryant singled home the tiebreaking run in the 15th inning, and Maddon used three pitchers in left field while Chicago beat the Cincinnati Reds 7-2 on Tuesday night in the longest game of the season for both teams. With the Cubs out of position players, relievers Travis Wood and Spencer Patton (1-0) alternated between left field and the mound in the 14th inning, which ended with Patton getting the final out. Wood then finished it off with reliever Pedro Strop in left. When I went out there to do it originally, the infielders were kind of giggling, said Maddon, who had never done anything like it as a manager. It worked perfectly as things started falling in place for the Cubs again.Bryants only hit on Tuesday -- a single off J.J. Hoover (1-2) -- snapped the tie. Javier Baez added a grand slam in the 15th, the sixth career allowed by Hoover, which is a Reds record. Then it was just a matter of figuring out how to finish it off.For the left fielder to pitch to one batter and then go back -- yeah, thats crazy, Baez said. But we had fun.The National Leagues top team went 1-6 last week but has pulled out of the downturn by winning the first two games of a series against the Reds. The Cubs hit five homers -- three by Bryant -- while taking the opener 11-8.Eugenio Suarez singled home the tying run with two outs in the ninth off Hector Rondon, his third blown save in 16 chances, setting the game on its meandering course. There were a lot of instances that suggest things were going to go our way, but we werent able to get it done, Reds manager Bryan Price said. Thats a tough one, a really tough one.Maddon had talked to Wood about playing left field in such a circumstance. The reliever hadnt played outfield since high school, but takes fly balls during batting practice to stay ready. None of the Reds hit the ball to left field with a Cubs reliever out there, which was a disappointment for Wood.It was definitely interesting, a lot of fun, Wood said. I would have liked to have recorded an out.Ben Zobrist led off the game with a homer off left-hander John Lamb. Left-hander Jon Lester singled home another run and allowed only one hit until the eighth inning, when Billy Hamilton homered. The Cubs closer couldnt hold on.A lot of the focus Tuesday was on Bryant, who was coming off a historic performance.Bryant became the first major league player to hit three homers and two doubles in a game on Monday night. He set a Cubs record with 16 total bases and became the youngest Cubs player to hit three homers in a game since Ernie Banks did it in 1955, also at the age of 24.Bryant broke his three-homer bat the first time up on Tuesday, cracking it on a groundout. The bat boy retrieved it and took it to the Major League Baseball authenticator, who labeled the bat and safely stored it. Bryant flied out, walked twice, fouled out with two runners aboard for the final out in the 10th, and struck out in the 13th before driving in the go-ahead run.SO UNUSUALThe last time a Cubs pitcher played the outfield was 2009 when Sean Marshall was in left.TRAINERS ROOMReds: RHP Homer Bailey felt fine a day after throwing an inning in his first rehab start. Bailey, who is recovering from Tommy John surgery 13 months ago, is expected to pitch again on Saturday. ... 2B Brandon Phillips fouled a ball off the inside of his left foot in the first inning. He fouled another pitch off the same foot in his next at-bat and got hit in the left side by a pitch from Rondon in the ninth.UP NEXTCubs: Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 2.76) is 1-5 with a 3.79 ERA in seven road starts this season. Hes 4-1 with a 1.93 ERA in seven home games.Reds: Cody Reed (0-1, 6.75) makes his third career start. LOUIS -- Alexander Steen scored a power-play goal with 59.Winning 11 straight games is no doubt an impressive feat and has the Toronto Blue Jays back into the Wild Card race in the American League, if not the race for the AL East division title. However, the thing that really surprised me was where this streak fits in, historically. The Blue Jays also won 11 in a row in 1987 and 1998. They have tied a franchise record, but it is actually tied for the lowest franchise record win streak in American League history. The Angels also won 11 in a row, once back in 1964, but every other team in the American League has a longer franchise record win streak. The 2002 Oakland As, the team Michael Lewis wrote about that led to the movie Moneyball, set the all-time American League record with 20 straight victories. The As finished at 103-59 that season and had the streak broken by the MInnesota Twins on September 6. It was also the Twins who eliminated Oakland in the American League Division Series that year. The longest win streak of all time is generally credited to the 1935 Chicago Cubs, who won 21 in a row. The oddity of that streak was the first 19 games were played at Wrigley Field. The winning roll finally ended on September 28 at St. Louis. The Cubs finished the year at 100-54 and made it to the World Series, where they ultimately lost to the Detroit Tigers. Before you start thinking streaking teams never end up winning big, let me give you the flip side. The 1947 Yankees won 19 in a row from June 29-July 18. They finished the year at 97-57 and stopped Brooklyn in the Fall Classic in seven games. The 1906 Chicago Cubs, the so-called Hitless Wonders, won 19 straight and wound up with a sterling record of 116-36, and ended up with a .763 win percentage, the highest in Major League history. Then they went on to upset their cross-town rival, the Cubs in the World Series. The strangest win streak I could find in the modern era belonged to the 1916 New York Giants of John McGraw. They actually won 26 in a row. However after the 14th game, they played a 1-1 tie with Pittsburgh in a game that was called after nine innings, likely because of darkness as it was the second game of a double-header. So technically, it doesnt count as a 26-game streak. It was 14, then a tie, then 12 more wins, but they werent beaten in 26 games. There were some real oddities in this streak.dddddddddddd All 26 games from September 7-30 were played at home by the Giants at the Polo Grounds. The Boston Braves finally ended the streak in the second game of a twinbill. It was the deadball era, so maybe this shouldnt be too surprising, but the Giants racked up 10 shutout victories in those 26 wins. The Giants were an extremely streaky team in 1916. They also won 17 in a row at one point, and had losing streaks of eight and six games. Also during the 26 game streak, they beat every one of the other clubs in the 8-team National League at least once. You would think after all of that the Giants must have had a great season. Wrong! They finished 86-66 and wound up in fourth place in an 8-team league. The first two times the Blue Jays put together 11 game win streaks didnt exactly have happy endings either. In 1987, Jimy Williams team lost the division title to Detroit in that heart-breaking final weekend, three-game sweep at old Tiger Stadium. In 1998, Tim Johnsons only year at the helm, the Jays streak ran from August 27-September 7. It actually looked as though the Blue Jays might catch the Yankees for the division lead. However, their final road trip brought them down. After winning three out of four in New York, they lost two straight at Cleveland, two in a row at Detroit and two out of three at Tampa Bay to finish the journey at 4-7. After that, they were done. This years Blue Jays have won 15 of their 18 games, are showing strengths in all facets of the game and they only figure to get stronger when Jose Reyes returns from rehab later in the week. This might actually turn out to be a year when a lengthy win streak actually translates into post-season success. For those who were wondering, the Montreal Expos never had an 11-game win streak. Their best was 10 and they accomplished that three times. Their offspring, the Washington Nationals have had one 10-game win streak. Of all the other National League clubs, the lowest franchise record win streak is nine by the Florida/Miami Marlins, who have done it four times. Colorado had two 11-game win streaks, and the New York Mets have had four 11-gamers. All the other teams in the Senior Circuit have exceeded that 11-game total as their franchise records for winning streaks. WASHINGTON -- Ivo Karlovics big serve carried him to a second consecutive final at age 37, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory over fifth-seeded American Steve Johnson at the Citi Open on Saturday. The 6-foot-11 Karlovic, a Croatian seeded 13th at the hard-court tournament, saved all five break points he faced in the semifinals. He has won all 43 of his service games this week. This is my game. This is my strength, Karlovic said in an on-court interview. I will never run like he does.He broke Johnson in the third game of each set, each time right after saving break points on his own serve. Its definitely frustrating when you have chances, you dont take them, and you lose your focus for a second and you lose serve, said Johnson, who eliminated top-seeded John Isner in the quarterfinals. And thats the margin when you play a guy (like) Ivo, (who) pretty much only has a serve.Karlovic will face No. 2-seeded Gael Monfils of France or No. 7 Alexander Zverev of Germany in Sundays final.Last week, at the grass-court tournament in Newport, Rhode Island, Karlovic became the oldest man since 1979 to win an ATP singles title.I believe its (because of) hard work and also because I didnt begin very young, said Karlovic, who was 21 when he turned pro. Im not as used up as my age would suggest. This has been something of a resurgence for the man whose biggest victory was a first-round upset of defending champion Lleyton Hewitt at Wimbledon in 2003. Since losing his first six matches of 2016, Karlovic has gone 16-7.Much of his success is based on his serve, which comes at opponents from way up high and gets quite a bounce on Washingtons hard courts, especially in the July heat.In the 25 years that ATP service stats cover, Karlovic leads the tour with more than 11,000 career aces and by winning 92 percent of his service games. He began Saturday averaging 22 aces per match at the Citi Open and finished the semifinal with 14, including a pair on the lastt two points at 134 mph and 132 mph.ddddddddddddJohnson serves well, too, and he came into the semifinal having held in all 32 of his service games in the tournament, saving 7 of 7 break points. Those streaks did not last long against Karlovic, who isnt necessarily known for his prowess as a returner. In Johnsons second service game, less than 15 minutes into the match, he missed a shot at deuce to hand over a break point and angrily smacked a ball into the stands. Then, with both men at the net, Karlovic lunged for a backhand volley winner to go up 2-1.A game earlier, Karlovics first on serve, represented perhaps Johnsons best chance to steal a break.Struggling to see the ball on his toss because of a bright sun that brought the temperature near 100 degrees, Karlovic double-faulted three times, helping create two break points. But Karlovic erased the first with a 130 mph service winner, then came up with this sequence after the second: 130 mph ace, 128 mph service winner, 109 mph service winner.Similarly, in the second set, Karlovic broke right after saving a break point created by a double-fault. This time, Karlovic went up 2-1 by delivering a cross-court forehand return winner, followed by a down-the-line backhand return winner. When Johnson held a pair of break points at 15-40 in the next game, Karlovic responded by hitting three consecutive aces, then a service winner to hold for 3-1. And he was on his way. After the match, Johnson took to Twitter to respond to some of the meaner messages he received about his loss. Among Johnsons choice phrases: Learn English so we know what you are trying to say and you are an idiot.Asked at his news conference about the exchanges, Johnson said he doesnt take it seriously, whatsoever and considers those sending pointed messages his way useless human beings. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Jimbo Fisher lauded Florida State University President John Thrasher Tuesday for seeing the big picture the day after the school announced the coachs contract extension.Fisher, 77-17 in seven seasons at Florida State, signed a two-year extension that will keep him at the school through the 2024 season. It is the second time in two years Fisher has had his contract redone by Thrasher.Weve really built something really special and I want to continue it for a long time, Fisher said. I think President Thrasher has been awesome with that and seeing the big picture with everything that goes on. He loves it and understands what we do. We understand our importance to this university too and how we represent it and things that go on.Since Fisher took over the program in 2010 after the retirement of Bobby Bowden, Florida State has redone its practice fields, built an indoor facility, overhauled the locker room and added a players lounge.A bigger renovation of Doak Campbell Stadium is a long-term priority but something that is more immediate is adding new athlete dorms along with an athletics academic center. Thrasher said he is hopeful that he can begin adding private funding for that early next year and is hopeful that more concrete plans can be finalized before the fall.Even though he received plenty of questions from reporters about the opening at LSU after Les Miles was fired, Fisher said wasnt asked about it too many times from members of his coaching staff, players or potential recruits. The 10th-ranked Seminoles (9-3) wrapped up the first portion of practices for their Dec. 30 game against No. 6 Michigan in the Orange Bowl. The players are off until Saturday, when they will travel to South Florida and resume preparations.Fisher said he would have preferred spending Christmas in Tallahassee but that the timetable did not work out.Well practice a little bit on Christmas day then well have a dinner that night and everything together like a family and try to spend a lot of time with them, he said. AINESVILLE, Fla. - Two second-half goals gave the University of Florida soccer team a 2-0 win over Tennessee in Southeastern Conference home action Sunday at the James G. Pressly Stadium. After a scoreless opening half, Savannah Jordan put the Gators on the scoreboard in the 69th minute. The play started when Samantha Chung stepped up to a Tennessee clearance and one-touched it ahead to Jordan just above the box. Jordan and her defender fought for possession as Jordan moved toward goal and her seven-yard right-footed shot scored just inside the near post. The Gators got an insurance goal in the 89th minute when freshman Sammie Betters scored her first collegiate goal. From just above the endline, sophomore Sarah Troccoli sent the ball to Betters who was wide of the top of the 18-yard box. Betters took a touch and then hit a 23-yard shot which curled in at the far post upper corner.Worth Noting: The goal was Jordans eighth of the season. She leads UF in goals and points (23). Betters is the fifth Gator (and second freshman) to score her first collegiate goal this season, joining teammates Melanie Monteagudo, Gabby Seiler, Chung and Kit Loferski. Tennessee entered Sundays match with a three-match win streak - all by shutouts. Jordans goal ended the Vols shutout streak at 354.54 minutes. Both teams entered the match 4-0 in 2016 Sunday matches. When you come off a loss like we had on Thursday, its great to get back out on the field. All we were looking for was a response from the teeam, and I think we got that.ddddddddddddIt was a pretty dominating performance in terms of us being able to keep it and our shots on goal. At the same time, I think Tennessee did a great job keeping us off the board in the first half. I think our team wanted to make a statement, especially because we thought that result on Thursday wasnt who were thought we were. So I think they came out with a little chip on their shoulder to show who we were. - Florida Head CoachBecky Burleigh On Sammie Betters scoring her first collegiate goal: Its funny because at that point in the match we were just trying to keep possession, but obviously she saw something she thought she could exploit. She did and it went right in.Florida Head Coach Becky BurleighOn tonights match... Its great to get a shutout, weve been working towards that all season. Im really proud of how our team collectively played defense together. I also think we had a really good response after Thursday night. We recollected ourselves, and we know were better than a 3-0 loss. So we came out today and played with that passion. We played for each other, and I think it benefited us in the best way. Were going to have another tough one on the road again next week. I think this is a good start to get us back on the right foot and to push forward to the rest of the SEC. - senior forward Savannah Jordan On her first collegiate goal: I looked up and saw the back post was open, so I figured Why not go for it?. It went pretty well, I guess. It was exciting for sure and its great to contribute for the team in any way. - freshman midfielder Sammie Betters Wholesale Black NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys 2018 Cheap Stitched Jerseys Wholesale Black NFL Jerseys NFL Jerseys From China Cheap Jerseys Wholesale China NFL Jerseys White ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Day 13 of the Rio Games features medal action in track and field, beach volleyball, platform diving, wrestling and more. Here are some things to watch (all times local):TRACK AND FIELDUsain Bolt should be lining up for gold medal No. 8 at 10:30 p.m. in the 200 meters and the biggest drama may not be whether he wins, but whether he cracks the once-thought-untouchable 19-second barrier. He already owns both the world record at 19.19, and Olympic record at 19.30.Among those who will challenge him include Canadian Andre De Grasse, who was on Bolts shoulder for much of the semifinal Wednesday night, and LaShawn Merritt of the U.S. De Grasse won bronze to Bolts gold in the 100.American Justin Gatlin -- who won silver in the 100 and was booed at that event -- failed to qualify in semis.Mens decathalon medals will be awarded after the 1500m finals, which start at 9:56 p.m. The athletes day starts with 110m hurdles (9:30 a.m.), discus (10:25 a.m.), pole vault (1:25 p.m.), javelin (6:45 p.m.) American Ashton Eaton is leading in points after the first day of events. Damian Warner of Canada, beat Eaton in a 100-meter heat and set an Olympic decathlon best 10.30 seconds in the process. In the womens 400 hurdles at 10:15 p.m., the Americans try to capture their first Olympic gold in the event. Dalilah Muhammad is the favorite, but Ashley Spencer is running well. The 30-year-old Kerron Clement tries to add a gold medal in the 400 hurdles, which start at noon. He won a silver in the event at the 2008 Beijing Games (and had a cameo in a Beyonce video ). Jamaicas Annsert Whyte has the second best time of the year.At 9:31 p.m., South Africas Caster Semenya runs in the 800 semis at 9:31 p.m. Semenya has been under unwanted scrutiny ever since word leaked in 2009, just before she won the 800-meter world title as a 19-year-old, that track officials mandated that she undergo sex testing. The shot put finals, starting at 10:30 p.m., are Joe Kovacs to lose. The American has four of the top five best throws in the world this season. The womens javelin finals are at 9:10 p.m.BASKETBALLThe U.S. will most likely be without star guard Sue Bird when they face France in the semifinal at 7 p.m.Bird suffered a sprained knee capsule and is listed as day-to-day. Even without the four-time Olympian, the Americans still have the most potent offense in the tournament, averaging over 104 points a game. They have won 47 consecutive games in the Olympics and stand two victories away from a sixth straight gold medal. The game is a rematch of the 2012 London Games gold medal match, which the Americans won by 36 points. France had its own injury at point guard when star Celine Dumerc hurt her ankle right before the Olympics began.Earlier, at 3 p.m., Spain plays Serbia. The gold medal game is Saturday afternoon.BEACH VOLLEYBALLThe mens finals at 11:50 p.m. pit two-time Olympians Paolo Nicolai and Daniele Lupo of Italy against Brazils Alison and Bruno , who is the nephew of the nations basketball icon Oscar Schmidt. The Italians beat Russias Viacheslav Krasilnikov and Konstantin Semenov 15-21, 21-16, 15-13 on Tuesday night.Alison and Bruno, the No. 1 seed in the tournament, are the defending world champions and the hometown favorites.GOLFThe second round of womens play starts at 7:30 a.m.Ariya Jutanugarn of Thailand takes a one-shot lead into the second round of play when golf resumes at 7:30 a.m. Her 6-under 65 has her one shot ahead of South Koreans Inbee Park and Seiyoung Kim.Jutanugarn is a four-time winner coming off her first major at the Womens British Open.VOLLEYBALLThe top-ranked American women look to move one step closer to a first gold when they take on Serbia in the semifinals at 1 p.m. The landscape of the tournament changed after two-time defending Olympic champion Brazil made an early exit at Chinas hands.Serbia lost in four sets to the U.S. during pool play but pulled off a surprising five-set victory at last years World Cup in Japan that forced the Americans to qualify for Rio in January.China will face the upstart Netherlands women, who are leaving their mark in Rio playing in their first Olympics in 20 years. They play at 10:15 p.m.WRESTLINGThree-time world champion Adeline Gray is a heavy favorite in the 75-kilogram weight class, while Helen Maroulis is a serious medal contender at 53 kilograms.Grays top challenger will likely be Aline Da Silva Ferreira, a silver medalist from the world championship in 2014 wholl no doubt be backed by a boisterous home crowd.Maroulis, who won a world title at 55 kilograms in 2015, will find herself up against the toughest opponent of her career if she and Japans Saori Yoshida reach the finals.Yoshida is a 16-time world champion -- including three Olympic titles -- and she hasnt lost in a major tournament in years. But Yoshidas margins of victory have shrunk in recent tournaments, and Maroulis hasnt lost a match in two years. The qualification matches start at 10 a.m.BOXINGU.S. bantamweight Shakur Stevenson is scheduled to face Russias Vladimir Nikitin at 2:30 p.m. for a spot in the gold-medal bout, although Nikitin might be unable to fight after taking serious damage in his hotly disputed win over Irelands Michael Conlan two days earlier.Three Cuban boxers appear in the final four fights, culminating in Julio Cesar La Cruzs gold-medal light heavyweight bout with Kazakhstans Adilbek Niyazymbetov at 3:30 p.m.DIVINGChinas dominance at the diving pool shows no signs of waning as the 10-meter platform finals approach at 4 p.m.Si Yajie and Ren Qian went 1-2 in the preliminaries Wednesday, setting themselves up to challenge for Chinas sixth diving gold medal of the Rio Olympics.Si scored no lower than 76.50 in any of the five rounds and posted the top score of 397.45 points. Ren was a bit off on her third dive but still claimed the second spot at 385.80.No one else was even close. Jessica Parratto of the United States took third at 346.80.The top 18 move on to Thursdays semifinals at 10 a.m.FIELD HOCKEYThe gold medal mens match features two surprises with Belgium taking on Argentina at 5 p.m.The Argentines humiliated Germany, the defending two-time champion, by a record 5-2 to get through the semis. And the Belgians beat the Netherlands 3-1 to break an 80-year streak of never losing to the neighbor in major competition.BMX CYCLINGMaris Strombergs of Latvia begins his quest for a third straight gold in BMX racing when the mens quarterfinals begin.Nicknamed The Machine, Strombergs is the only man to win BMX gold since the cycling event was added to the Olympics as a medal sport in 2008 in Beijing. Those lessons were more than enough to overwhelm the Utah Jazz. Lou Williams scored 25 points and the Hawks continued their offensive upswing as they rolled to an easy 118-85 victory over the Jazz on Friday night, winning their third straight and for the fourth time in five games. Buy Ray Ban Aviators Online Cheap . LOUIS -- Attorneys for the St. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Team first. That has been the marching orders for the U.S. womens gymnastics team since its five members were selected in July. Focus on the team competition, and the rest -- the all-around medals, the inevitable superlatives and the individual medals -- will be icing.Tuesday night, the cake finished baking. The Americans -- who dubbed themselves the Final Five in honor of U.S. team coordinator Martha Karolyis final season -- defended their 2012 gold medal, winning by more than eight points over the Russians. U.S. team captain Aly Raisman and 2012 all-around champ Gabby Douglas became the first American women to win two team gold medals in gymnastics. Its time to slather on the icing.During qualification on Sunday, every member of the U.S. team qualified for at least one of the event finals, which will take place over three days during the next week. The U.S. will send two women to each event final except for vault, where three-time world champ Simone Biles, who will also compete on floor and beam, will be the lone U.S. representative. Raisman and Biles also qualified into the all-around final, which takes place Thursday. The key now is getting enough rest, Raisman, 22, said after Tuesdays team final. Thats the key for me. Well have the morning off and a quick workout tomorrow and then its just preparing and staying calm.It is conceivable -- no, probable -- that the U.S. women will leave Rio with every gold medal on the table, and perhaps four silver medals, to boot. Biles has the very real possibility of nabbing five gold medals and finally putting to rest the debate over whether she is the greatest gymnast of all time. (Spoiler alert: She is.)If Madison Kocian and Gabby Douglas perform the flawless bar routines they landed Tuesday, they will go 1-2 in that event. Biles and Raisman should do the same on floor, and Biles is the vault favorite.Laurie Hernandez, who has been as consistent as any gymnast in Rio, could conceivably give Biles a run on beam, especially if Biles falters. Biles finished .67 ahead of Hernandez on beam in the team final, but Hernadezs Sunday qualification score of 15.366 would have been good enough to beat Biles 15.3 from Tuesday. Hernandez has five days off before Mondays beam finals, while Biles will compete in the all-around and vault first. So while its a long shot, the topic of a Hernandez upset on beam is at least open for debate.I get what yooure saying, but Im not going to tell her that.dddddddddddd The less that she knows, the better, said Maggie Haney, Hernandezs coach. I saw that she is going to be last on beam, but she doesnt know that yet, either. Thatll be good. Well be in the back gym warming up and shell come out two routines before hers and hop up and she wont know anything. Shes young, her eyes get big, and her head gets crazy. I dont want her to worry about any of that. For all five women, the next week will be about staying focused and not allowing extra energy to seep out of their systems. Although Biles seems as well built and mentally solid as any athlete for the rigors of Olympic competition, even she has admitted in the past to competing on tired legs. Even more important is to make sure shes not competing with a tired mind. Its easy, really, because you take it one day at a time, Biles said. We train so hard for this all year, and thats what we are here to do.Its a script Biles rarely deviates from, but when she and her coach, Aimee Boorman, say they take it one meet, one routine, one skill at a time, they arent being coy. Boorman doesnt allow Biles to get ahead of the moment, so until team qualification was over, they didnt talk about the team final. Until the team gold medal was placed around Biles neck, she didnt let her mind wander to Thursdays all-around competition. When Biles walks into the Rio Arena for each days competition, she doesnt allow herself to look at the Olympic rings. That would make these competitions feel special, and if Karolyi has taught her athletes anything, it is that every competition routine should feel like every routine in the gym.Still, its got to be hard not to imagine, if just for a minute, what it will be like to stand on the medal stand and fulfill individual goals while cementing this team as the greatest ever and the first to win six Olympic gold medals. We saw it happen in prelims, obviously, but we just try to focus on doing our routines the best we can, Raisman said. If you get too caught up in thinking about winning, youre not thinking about doing one skill at a time. Were trying to stay in our bubble. We know we have a lot of pressure on us, but we are making sure we stay grounded and humble and keep working hard. We still have more to do.
