Kris Bryant hit a two-run homer, Jon Lester threw seven scoreless innings and Hector Rondon and Aroldis Chapman finished off the Chicago Cubs 2-0 victory over the Houston Astros on Friday night. It was Bryants first career game against the team that passed on him with the first pick in the 2013 draft to take starter Mark Appel, who was traded to Philadelphia this offseason before ever playing in the majors. Bryant, taken second in that draft, gave Houston an up-close look at what could have been when he smacked his 37th homer off Joe Musgrove (2-4) to put the Cubs up 2-0 in the fifth inning.Lester (16-4) allowed seven hits and struck out seven for his seventh straight win. He hasnt lost since July 3, hasnt allowed a run in three of those starts and gave up just one run in four others in that span. The Cubs are major league-best 90-50.MARLINS 4, DODGERS 1MIAMI -- Jose Fernandez tied a career high with 14 strikeouts, overshadowing Clayton Kershaws return from injury in Miamis victory over Los Angeles.Fernandez (14-8) gave up three hits and three walks in seven shutout innings. Marco Estrada (8-8) was the loser. The Red Sox broke it open by scoring six runs in a 10-batter seventh. Bogaerts hit a leadoff drive off Scott Feldman, his 18th. Johnsons double down the right-field line off Maurico Cabrera drove in Asdrubal Cabrera.Johnson was traded from Atlanta to the Mets on June 8 and has twice made the Braves pay for the move. His 11th-inning, pinch-hit homer gave the Mets a 1-0 win over Atlanta on June 25.The surging Mets lead St. Louis by percentage points in the race for the second NL wild card. The defending NL champions have won 15 of 19 to match their season high at nine games over .500.Hansel Robles (6-4) worked a scoreless seventh. Jeurys Familia pitched around Adonis Garcias leadoff double and a two-out walk to Nick Markakis in the ninth for his major league-leading 48th save.Matt Kemp homered for Atlanta. ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. -- Florent Geroux had ridden three horses for trainer Chad Brown before Saturday, none of whom hit the board. But Brown entrusted Geroux with rides in two Grade 1 races on Saturday at Arlington, Geroux won both of them, and the ride he gave Beach Patrol in the Grade 1, $450,000 Secretariat was exactly what Brown desired. That was the trip we were hoping hed get last time, Brown said. Florent kept him in the clear and out of trouble.Beach Patrol had gotten into a spot of trouble and was posted four wide on the turns when he finished third in the Belmont Derby last month. Geroux had him three wide today but sacrificed a bit of ground loss to keep Beach Patrol out of traffic. The pair moved to challenge for the lead at the top of the stretch, took over before the stretch call, then had to hold off a resurgent Long Island Sound, whom Beach Patrol had passed in mid-stretch, but who continued on gamely to the finish for trainer Aidan OBrien, who was seeking his third straight Secretariat win.You know when you pass a horse from that barn, youd better go by quickly because they always run, said Geroux.Geroux is a Frenchman who cut his teeth in American racing on the Chicago circuit, basing at Arlington during the summer until this year. His business has grown by leaps and bounds, and though he has won Breeders Cup races, Saturday surely was the best single day of his career. He won five of the cards 10 races, four graded stakes, and two Grade 1s. He also won the Grade 1 Beverly D. for Brown on Sea Calisi, the Grade 3 American St. Leger on Da Big Hoss, and was elevated to first by a disqualification on the Brown-trained Noble Beauty in the Grade 3 Pucker UUp.dddddddddddd.I dont feel pressure. I just try to have a blank mind on days like this, try to ride my best, Geroux said.Scissors and Tape, a pacemaker for Oscar Nominated, set a solid pace over good-to-firm going, passing the half-mile in 48.31, pursued by Long Island Sound and Beach Patrol. The pacemaker threw in the towel at the top of the stretch as the two favorites slugged it out, with Beach Patrol just a head better on the day. American Patriot had a traffic-filled trip on the inside and ran a good race to get third, three-quarters of a length behind Long Island Sound. He wasnt taking me anywhere early, said jockey William Buick. Hes a big horse, and it probably wasnt ideal being in so tight.Long Island Sound improved Saturday on his sixth-place finish in the Belmont Derby. He was better this time than last time, said jockey Seamie Heffernan. Hes an improving horse. One Mean Man turned in his typically solid performance to finish fourth and was followed by Oscar Nominated, Cordon, Surgical Strike, Cherry Wine, and Scissors and Tape. The winning time for the 1-1/4 miles was 2:01.95. Beach Patrol paid $7.60 as the mild favorite.Beach Patrol is owned by James Covello, Sheep Pond Partners, and Head of Plains Partners. Hes a 3-year-old colt by Lemon Drop Kid out of the Quiet American mare Bashful Bertie who has gone 3-2-2 from eight starts and won his first graded stakes after a near miss in May in the American Turf. Beach Patrol was developed as a young horse by trainer Wayne Catalano and was sold privately this year by Gary and Mary West. ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO -- It took Swiss mountain biker Nino Schurter eight years to climb all the way up the Olympic podium, a slow ascent that was at times frustrating, heartbreaking and infuriating. He finally reached the top step Sunday.Schurter pulled away from reigning champion Jaroslav Kulhavy of the Czech Republic on the penultimate lap and rode solo to the finish, adding a gold medal to the silver he won at the 2012 London Games and the bronze he captured at the 2008 Beijing Games.I worked hard to complete my medal collection, Schurter said. My story is now perfect. The top two steps of the podium were a reversal of the finish from London, when Kulhavy overtook his biggest rival on the final section of turns at Hadleigh Farm.Schurter broke down in tears that day, so close to achieving his Olympic dream. Now looking back on London, he said, I think it had to be silver there. I worked hard to get stronger and better and Im really happy and satisfied.Schurter and Kulhavy worked together to establish a gap on the rest of the field over the mountain bike course, turned in some places to a quagmire by overnight rain. But the Swiss superstar and reigning world champion was able to up the tempo when it mattered the most.Schurter covered the seven-lap, 34-kilometer course in 1 hour, 33 minutes, 28 seconds. Kulhavy was 50 seconds back while Carlos Coloma of Spain was another 33 seconds adrift to take bronze. This was the most important moment of my career, Coloma said. I had perfect preparation. I had self-confidence. And this is a dream come true.Five-time world champion Julien Absalon of France, who intends to retire after this season, was eighth. World road race champion Peter Sagan had two flat tires and finished out of contention.Sagan decided to ride off road in Rio after scouting the climb-heavy road course and realizing it did not suit his strengths. But the decision earlier this year meant he only had time to squeeze in a couple of mountain bike races, leaving him ranked No. 900 in the world. That also meant he started with the final bib number in the very back of the pack.Just like he did in laying waste to a small race in Wyoming a couple of weeks ago, part of his post-Tour de France training plan, Sagan immediately went to the front of the field. His power came in handy given the conditions. The rain tapered off an hour before the start left, but it left the winding, technical course in the Deodoro neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro a soggy mess. Riders had to dismount and push their bikes over a few particularly slick climbs, slipping and sliding as if they were on ice. Some riders lamented they did not adjust their setup to the conditions. My bike was the same as yesterday, Kulhavy said, but maybe it was a little bit of a mistake because I had a very fast tire in the rear and I had a problem with the muddy hills.Sagans chances ultimately were ruined when his front tire went flat at the start of the second lap. He began working his way back through the field again only for his back tire to go flat.Hardly the only rider to puncture on the stone-strewn course, Sagan finished in 35th place. The race began to string out by the third of seven laps. Schurter and Kulhavy were never more than a few feet apart, the reigning Olympic champ and world champ clearly the strongest riders in the field. Coloma hung with them for a while before slowly losing ground.Absalon was two minutes down by the sixth lap, his chances of another gold medal gone.It was about that point that Schurter finally shook Kulhavy from his rear wheel, dropping the Czech champion with some daring riding on the tricky descents. He was 44 seconds clear at the start of the final lap, all alone on a course jammed with fans.By the final straightaway, Schurter was all alone.Eight years of so many close calls had been wiped away in less than two hours, Schurter at last allowed to step to the top of the podium and hear the Swiss national anthem.Im just really happy, he said. Really satisfied with my whole medal collection. Those lessons were more than enough to overwhelm the Utah Jazz. Lou Williams scored 25 points and the Hawks continued their offensive upswing as they rolled to an easy 118-85 victory over the Jazz on Friday night, winning their third straight and for the fourth time in five games. Terrell Owens Super Bowl Jersey . Haas said he "felt a lot of pain" in his right shoulder when he slammed his racket to the ground in frustration after losing his serve at 3-3 in the first set. Richie James Super Bowl Jersey . A knee to the thigh might have stung him the most, but his sixth straight double-double made up for the brief burst of pain. Winston Reid popped up in a goal during stoppage time to finally carve a way through a resolute Sunderland defence and snatch all three points for West Ham United in a remarkable 1-0 victory at London Stadium on Saturday.West Ham (3-1-5) dominated the opening exchanges, leaving Sunderland camped on the edge of their own area looking very much like they lacked a game plan. The dominance however lacked a cutting edge, and despite the best efforts of Manuel Lanzini and Dimitri Payet, the Hammers failed to really test goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. The second period was more open, although still West Ham dominated but neither keeper had to work that hard to earn their money. Sunderlandd coach David Moyes made a number of defensive-minded substitutions, seemingly content to earn what would have been a decent away draw.dddddddddddd. However, Reid collected a short corner routine on the edge of the box in the dying moments of time added on and tucked the ball home past the outstretched arm of the Pickford. The Premier Leagues only winless team, Sunderland (0-2-7) may feel aggravated that a number of West Ham players were standing in offside positions for the goal, but Moyes men definitely did not play hard enough to earn the victory. TORONTO -- Toronto FC manager Ryan Nelsen says there is a future for Danny Califf at the MLS club despite the 33-year-old defenders lack of activity recently. Califf was touted as a veteran presence when he was taken in the re-entry draft in December. New Toronto FC president Kevin Payne said at the time that the franchise expected Califf "to provide important leadership as we change the culture of our team." "Were thrilled to have him on our team," Payne added in the statement. But after starting the first four games of the season, Califf has been reduced to being a spectator of late, arguably Torontos fifth choice at centre back. On Tuesday, he was nowhere to be seen. "He had a virus last week. Hes been away for a few days actually," said Nelsen when asked about the absence. Its worth noting that Califf was acquired before Nelsen, a former central defender himself who is just two years older than Califf, was installed as manager. Nelsen reminded reporters of the fact when asked if the relationship between club and player was no longer viable. "When I came in, knowing that Toronto had signed Danny, it was like all five centre backs weve got, it was all for them to compete for two jobs," he said. "Everybody in their career has to go from pecking order one to pecking order five. Thats life, its how you react to it. "All we want from Danny, all we ask of him is we set up an environment that people can work hard, put their head down and try and get on the spot. Thats all we ask of our players." Asked if there was a future for Califf in a Toronto FC shirt, Nelsen replied: "Of course, everybody here has a future. But its about putting in an effort, day in and day out, on and off the field." Going into this season, Califf had played in 207 MLS games over 10 seasons for the Los Angeles Galaxy, Philadelphia Union and Chivas USA. He has also played in Denmark for Aalborg and Midtjylland. Califf was first-choice at centre-back along with Darren ODea for the first four games of Torontos season. While not fleet of foot, he seemed to have done the job asked. He missed the next game, against FC Dallas, because of stomach flu. And then it all went south. Califf was healthy for the trip to Philadelphia the following week, with his California-based family set to see the game. The first ever captain of the Union, Califf has fond memories of his time in Philadelphia. Nelsen elected to stick with 21-year-old Gale Agbossoumonde, who had made his MLS debut in place of Califf the week before, and Califf found himself on the bench. He did not see action that day and has not stepped on the field in a league game since. Toronto has used Steven Caldwell and Doneil Henry at centre back recently, with ODea shifted to left back. Agbossoumonde has been on the bench. Califf has made no waves publicly, although it was obvious the Philadelphia snub hurt when he lost his starting job. Toronto hosts the Union in a return match Saturday. Califf, said to be ailing, was not part of the Toronto match squad in New England last weekend. He was an unused substitute for the five previous league games. He did play in both semifinal legs of the Amway Canadian Championship against Montreal, winning 2-0 at home and losing 6-0 in Montreal. In Europe, top teams seem to be largely happy with their squads after spending nearly $1 billion in the off-season. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. Detroit Lions defensive lineman Kerry Hyder might have lost all of the money he has made during training camp because of one hit in a preseason game.Hyder was fined $18,231 for roughing Cincinnati Bengals quarterback AJ McCarron in the third quarter of the Bengals 30-14 win over the Lions on Aug. 18, according to a source close to the situation. That will likely end up being more than Hyder will make during training camp.Because Hyder has yet to earn an accredited season in the NFL based on terms in the collective bargaining agreement, he is making $1,000 a week during Lions training camp.Based on that, his fine is around three times as much as the sum hell earn for the roughly six weeks he has spent trying to make Detroits roster.Hyder can appeal or ask for a reduced fine based on his expected salary this season and the fact he is a long shot to make the Lions roster. The current CBA has a provision for this situation. On appeal, a player may assert, among other defenses, that any fine should be reduced because it is excessive when compared tto the players expected earnings for the season in question, the CBA states.dddddddddddd However, a fine may be reduced on this basis only if it exceeds 25 percent of one week of a players salary for a first offense, and 50 percent of one week of a players salary for a second offense. The rule also says: A player may also argue on appeal that the circumstances do not warrant his receiving a fine above the amount stated in the schedule of fines.Hyders agent, Rich Rosa, did not immediately return a message asking whether Hyder plans to appeal.Hyder was on the New York Jets practice squad in the 2014 season and was with the Lions on their practice squad during 2015 before being signed for the final game of the 2016 season with Detroit, where he failed to record a tackle. The 25-year-old Hyder is competing for a depth defensive tackle spot with Stefan Charles, Caraun Reid, Khyri Thornton, Gabe Wright and Louis Palmer. A stunning second-half onslaught by Lance Franklin and Sydney have propelled the Swans to a brilliant 70-point AFL win over St Kilda.Buddy grabbed Saturday nights game by the scruff of the neck after a hotly contested first half, with 15 possessions and three goals in an inspired third-term effort that helped set up the 23.8 (146) to 11.10 (76) win in front of 33,059 fans at Etihad Stadium. The Saints led by five points at the first change and the Swans edged five points ahead at the main break after a pulsating opening half in which the lead changed hands nine times. But St Kilda were largely powerless to stop Sydney after the resumption as the visitors reinforced their claims on a top-two finish with a jaw-dropping display of high-intensity football. The wheels came off for the Saints as they fell 41 points behind at three-quarter time, with their slim finals hopes all but snuffed out with the percentage-sapping loss.Franklin finished with an equal career-high 28 disposals and kept himself in the hunt for the Coleman Medal, his six goals leaving him just three majors behind the leader, West Coasts Josh Kennedy.Franklin starred but the Swans had winners all over the ground.Dan Hannebery, Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker dominated the stoppages after halftime with Callum Mills and Aliir Aliir eye-catching in defence. The Saints were brave in the first half after they lost Jarryn Geary to a back strain in the warm-up and then had to contend with the second-half departures of Sam Fisher (jaw) and Tom Hickey (concussion).David Armitage, Seb Ross and Leigh Montagna worked hard for St Kilda in the inaugural Pride Game to celebrate diversity and tackle homophobia in sport. It was an interesting tussle in that first half ... we thought we were going ok but they were playing really good footy, Sydney coach John Longmire said.It was just a really powerful second half ... it was 15 goals to four, so it was just a fantastic second half.We probably got our hardness right, which was good, and our pressure on the opposition was good then we were able to use the ball going forward.Saints coach Alan Richardson was pleased at how his players took it up to a team that looks on course to finish in the top two in the first half, but was dismayed at the sudden drop in intensity. We acknowledge that theyre at a different level, so to match that for a half was positive but to fall away as badly as we did was really disappointing, Richardson said.It was as if the guys just completely ran out of legs and just didnt quite have the real appetite for the brutal contest after halftime, which was surprising. John Lucas, signed as a mentor for rookie Trey Burke, showed he can score if required, scoring 12 points of his 16 points in the second quarter as Utah built an 18-point lead. CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Former BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall has brought a new way of doing things to Virginia, using his theories of earned, not given and there are two ways of doing things: right, or again in trying to steer the Cavaliers to the success that has been elusive for so long. The Cavaliers did not have a typical spring game, but instead a typical practice with fans watching. They did not have a starting quarterback when that was over, even with incumbent and team leader Matt Johns returning. Instead, Johns, Connor Brewer and transfer Kurt Benkert have been battling for the job ever since. The coach, who serves as his own defensive coordinator and typically runs a 3-4 scheme, has been pleased with the results so far.I love our team because of how willing they are to work and how hard theyve worked, he said as preseason camp began. Thats something theyve chosen to do, and my responsibility, as long as they keep that up, is to put them in the very best positions ... to have success. The biggest question is behind center. Johns threw 20 touchdown passes last season, but also threw 17 interceptions, and began the spring as the least familiar with the offense among the three contenders.Hopefully my experience will give me a little bit of an advantage, Johns said, but at the same time, its about earning the coaches trust and playing simple and decisive and really competing every single day.The winner will have plenty of playmaking options to look to, starting with tailback Taquan Mizzell and multipurpose speedster Olamide Zaccheaus and including receivers Andrew Levrone and Doni Dowling, both back from injuries. Virginia is deep at running back, and moving the ball doesnt seem to be a concern of the coaches. On defense, nose tackle Donte Wilkins, linebacker Micah Kiser and safety Quin Blanding give them stalwarts and signal callers at all three levels, and Blanding is comfortable that Mendenhall will hhave the unit ready.ddddddddddddWe love him, and were thankful for him to be here, he said. Were just ready to win games. Some things to watch with Virginia this season:CHAPTER ONEThe Mendenhall era starts with a game against very talented Richmond of the Championship Subdivision, and rarely has an opener meant more. Sure, the Spiders are a lower-level opponent, but the Cavaliers have had their hands full with Richmond a few times in recent seasons, and they travel in Week Two to high-powered Oregon. Getting off to a good start and some positive initial reinforcement could set a tone for the early going.THE QBJohns has the respect of his teammates, but neither the arm strength nor the ability to keep plays alive with his feet that Benkert has shown. Benkert also arrived after spring practice already more familiar with the teams offense, having run it at East Carolina.KEY GAMESThe Cavaliers would love for games later in the season to become more important because of bowl ramifications, but until that happens, games at Connecticut on Sept. 17, at recent nemesis Duke on Oct. 1 and the regular-season finale at Virginia Tech are the one fans will most hope show a new day is dawning for Virginia. The Hokies have won the last 12 meetings in the series.PREDICTIONMendenhall was pleasantly surprised with the talent available when he got to Virginia, and the players have universally professed total belief in the coach and his staff. That kind of mindset goes a long way, especially in crunch time of tight games, and with a non-league schedule not nearly as daunting as in recent years, the Cavaliers should expect to get six wins and their first bowl game in five seasons.---Online:The APs college football page: www.collegefootball.ap.org---Follow Hank on Twitter: www.twitter.com/hankkurzjr ' ' '

NEW YORK -- Kevin Gausman has been nearly flawless against the New York Yankees this season. On Sunday, the Baltimore Orioles entrust Gausman to deliver again as they attempt to secure an American League wild-card spot in the regular-season finale at Yankee Stadium.Baltimores (88-73) quest for the wild card lasts into the final day because it blew a 3-0 lead in Saturdays 7-3 loss. Manager Buck Showalter hoped to get Wade Miley into the seventh but the decision backfired when the Yankees tied it and scored four times in the eighth off Brad Brach. Now they turn to Gausman, who was officially announced as the starter hours before Saturdays game. The Orioles (88-73) are tied with the Toronto Blue Jays, 1 1/2 games ahead of the Detroit Tigers. Baltimore also clinches with a Detroit loss Sunday in Atlanta or Monday -- if necessary -- at home against Cleveland. The Orioles have good reason to place their trust in Gausman.Gausman is 2-1 with a 0.80 ERA in five starts this season against the Yankees, who have scored five runs and struck out 32 times in 33 2/3 innings. None of those runs have been the last two times he faced New York, including a 5-0 victory Aug. 28 when he allowed seven hits and recorded nine strikeouts.Gausmans last appearance in New York saw him snap a 25-game road winless streak. When the right-hander ended his 0-16 stretch on the road, the Orioles were 71-59 and three games out of first place. The Orioles unofficially lost any chances to get first place when the Boston Red Sox completed a four-game sweep at Camden Yards from Sept. 19-22. They have won six of eight games since, earning a chance at their third playoff spot in the last five seasons. If you had told me at the beginning of the season this is a situation that I was going to be in and had the chance to secure a spot for us, Id say Id take that chance and take that responsibility, Gausman said to Baltimore reporters Saturday afternoon. So its pretty exciting, its going to fun.For the Orioles, it would be just as fun if the offense produced more like Fridays series opener than Saturdays game. The Orioles scored eight times and hit three home runs Friday but didnt score after the third inning Saturday and had three hits in the final six innings.Tomorrow is what weve been playing the whole season for anyway, Orioles catcher Matt Wieters said. It shouldnt be hard to get ready for a game tomorrow. Its a real tribute to our guys to have an opportunity like we have tomorrow, Showalter said. Thats how we look at it. Theyve done a lot of things to give us that opportunity and Im real proud and honored to be with them today andtomorrow.Besides trying to spoil things for the Orioles, the Yankees will be playing to win in retiring first baseman Mark Teixeiras final game of his 14-year career.Teixeira has started each of the last two games before getting taken out in the middle innings for a pinch runner.Just excited for him, Yankees third baseman Chase Headley said. Hes had an unbelievable career and its been a privilege to play with him for the past couple of years. Hes been a tremendous player for a really long time but hes a better person. It will be fun to celebrate his career with him tomorrow and I wish him well.Teixeira will be honored with a pregame ceremony and is expected to be in the lineup.Coincidentally, Teixeira plays his final game with Showalter, his first manager in the other dugout. He believed in me as a rookie, stuck with me as a rookie and I had four great years in Texas, Teixeira said. So itll be cool to see him across the field, understanding that he was there from the very beginning.Luis Cessa (4-3, 4.18 ERA) makes his ninth career start Sunday for the Yankees. Since entering the rotation Aug. 20, Cessa is 2/3 with a 3.72 ERA.In his eight starts, he allowed three earned runs or fewer five times and allowed six hits or less in each start. Cessa started against Baltimore in a 14-4 victory Aug. 26, allowing three runs and five hits in six innings. Dallas Stars Store . -- Most satisfying to Russ Smith about No. Fake Stars Jerseys . Sgt. CHICAGO -- Dressed in dark, furry bear suits from head to toe, Lisa Burton and Brian Robinson stood on Waveland Avenue, waiting to walk up to the rooftop of Beyond the Ivy and watch the first World Series game at Wrigley Field in 71 years.Burton, 39, and Robinson, 43, said they paid a total of $7,500 for a pair of tickets to take in all three games against Cleveland from across the street this weekend. The engaged couple made its way to Chicagos North Side from Birmingham, Alabama. All that money, and theyre not even sitting inside the ballpark. It felt like a bargain, Robinson said before the Cubs 1-0 loss Friday night. Ive been a Cubs fan since I was about 6 years old. I was born and raised in Meridian, Mississippi. You had two choices: You could watch the Braves or the Cubs. But Harry Caray was so much more fun to watch, even when the Cubs stunk, which was most of the time. He was the reason why I became a Cubs fan. When the World Series last came to Wrigley Field, a Game 7 loss to Detroit on Oct. 10, 1945, the major leagues were all-white, the championship was played in the daytime, television had not yet come to the Fall Classic and soldiers were coming home from World War II.Now the Cubbies were home in the Friendly Confines, three victories from their first title since 1908. And on an uncommonly warm 63-degree night with the wind blowing out to left and center at 14 mph, Wrigleyville was the meeting grounds for fans who long imagined a day like this, part hope, part pipe-dream.Only now if was coming true.Back in 1945, Series box seats had a list price of $7.20. This years tickets ranged from $85 to $565, and asking prices on StubHub a few hours before game time ranged from $1,019 to $9,439.Debbie Manfredi, of suburban Algonquin, stood on Kenmore Avenue trying to snag balls off the bat of right-handed hitters during batting practice. The 49-year-old, wearing a Cubs jersey signed by Ron Santo, has had season tickets in the lower deck behind third base for five years -- after 11 years spent on the waiting list. Her late father, Richard, grew up in Wrigleyville and rode his bicycle to games, then had season tickets in the 1970s. Debbie was taking her 15-year-old daughter, Taylor, to the game.I started believing last year, and this year you just felt it from the beginning. You just knew, Debbie Manfredi said. Not far away, fans were being fed hot dogs outside the two-story building that houses Engine Co. 78 and Ambulance Co. 6. Many held white flags with a blue W, a variation of the one that flies from the scoreboard after home wins. With seats painted in a dark Benjamin Moore Wrigley Field Green SC-62 and poles holding up its roof (and creating obstructed views), Wrigley is the focal point of its gentrified neighborhood, about 5 1/2 miles from The Loop downntown.dddddddddddd Even the handles of the doors of Starbucks across from the right-field corner are made of baseball bats.Hours before the crowd of 41,703 filed into Wrigley, the line to get into Murphys Bleachers snaked down Sheffield Avenue toward Addison Street, which runs along the first-base side of the ballpark. Statues of Ron Santo and Billy Williams had new jerseys and red roses, and Carays had a yellow apple in one hand.Youre getting to play in a museum -- for work, said 39-year-old Cubs catcher David Ross, who is retiring after the Series. Last year I walked to the park a lot and that was my favorite thing about last year, was just walking to the park and feeling the energy of the fans.Known as Weeghman Park when it opened for Chicagos Federal League club in 1914, Wrigley has been the Cubs home since 1916 and it retains most of its traditional look, even in the midst of a $375 million renovation that created a spacious new Cubs underground clubhouse this season and will lead to the relocation of the bullpens from foul territory to underneath the bleachers next year. The second-oldest ballpark in the major leagues behind Bostons Fenway Park (1912), Wrigley did not even have lights for night games until 1988. A pair of video boards were erected last year, 42-by-95 feet in left and 29-by-71 feet in right, flanking the hand-operated green scoreboard with white lettering and a circular clock atop the center-field bleachers, a focal point like a cherry on a cake.Cramped dugouts are more like World War I trenches than the roomy, comfy benches in more modern venues. The famous ivy along with red brick outfield walls, first installed in 1937, is green during sultry summers and thick enough to gobble up balls ahead of searching outfielders in baseballs version of Little Shop of Horrors, but in the cool of autumn it has dulled and thinned, starting to turn brown in patches. Its how baseball is supposed to be, said Indians manager Terry Francona, who played for the 1986 Cubs. When I was here, they didnt have the new clubhouse, so it was fun being at the ballpark until it was time to shower or go to the bathroom or something.Wrigley hosted Series games in 1929, `32, `35, `38 and `45, with the Cubs losing their first five and 11 of 13 overall entering this year. This is so enveloping. The fact that the bleachers come all the way around, Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. I drive down Clark every day from downtown, and as you get closer, you see all the venues that support all this, and also the people milling around. Anyplace Ive been, I havent seen that with any ballpark to that level. So its enormity in its entirety, its just different. ' ' '

Will Genia and Quade Cooper have hit the training paddock at Ballymore, adding fuel to speculation of a return to Queensland Reds. That certainly looks to be the case for Cooper at least, who must be signed to an Australian Super Rugby franchise to be available for the Rugby Championship which kicks off in August. As Cooper hasnt played the required 60 Tests that would make him eligible regardless of current club commitments, he must secure a deal with an Australian franchise before the tournament begins. He recently confirmed he wouldnt be taking up the second year of his contract with French club Toulon, further giving rise to talk of a return to Ballymore or even a rumoured move to Melbourne Rebels.Genia meanwhile, has played 66 Test for the Wallabies. But the veteran scrum-half battled injury in his first season with Paris club Stade Francais whom he joined after last years Rugby World Cup.The former Reds teammates took to Instagram on Friday to confirm their return to Brisbane.Wallabies coach Michael Cheika confirmed after the third Test loss to England that Matt Giteau, Drew Mitchell and Adam Ashley-Cooper had also signalled their intention to return for the Rugby Championship. The veteran backs will certainly strengthen Australias playing stocks for Tests against New Zealand, South Africa and Argentina, though England coach Eddie Jones labelled it nothing more than a short-term fix to Australias depth issues. Travis Kelce Super Bowl Jersey . The No. 1-ranked Nadal tweaked his back warming up for the Australian Open final, which he lost almost four weeks ago in a major upset against Stanislas Wawrinka. His first stop after the layoff is the clay in Rio as he tests the back and tries to stay healthy for the French Open in three months. Now, correct me if Im wrong but I saw one official distinctly pointing at the net indicating a good goal but after an inconclusive review they overturned the goal. Shouldnt the ruling on the ice (good goal) stand after an inconclusive review? Why was this overturned? James Veaudry Pembroke, ON -- Hey Kerry, Youll get a lot of these, but why was the Montreal goal against Nashville Saturday night overturned? Eller puts the puck on net and the on ice ruling from the ref behind the net is a Montreal goal. Cameron Erving Super Bowl Jersey . John Lucas, signed as a mentor for rookie Trey Burke, showed he can score if required, scoring 12 points of his 16 points in the second quarter as Utah built an 18-point lead. TEMPE, Ariz. -- A wide-open, run-and-gun style opened up Arizona States offense, even if the defense had some lapses. The Sun Devils had six players finish in double figures and their point total tied for the second-highest ever in program history. Freshman Sam Cunliffe had 23 points and 10 rebounds, and Kodi Justice scored a season-high 20 points to lead Arizona State to a 127-110 victory over The Citadel on Wednesday.Justice scored 13 points in the first half, when ASU built a 55-45 lead. Cunliffe scored 16 points in the second half. The Sun Devils (4-2) surpassed 100 points for the first time since 2009.Sam looked really smooth out there, ASU coach Bobby Hurley said. He looks more and more relaxed and comfortable in what were doing. Hes thrown himself into both ends of the floor.Obinna Oleka added 20 points and 15 rebounds and Tra Holder, the teams leading scorer at 17.2 points per game, scored 22.You dont come across many teams that play the style that they play and get up and down the way they do, Hurley said of the Bulldogs (3-3). It was a good game for us leading into next week in terms of the pace of the game. That first opponent next week is No. 1 Kentucky.Im scared to think of how many points they might score on us if we play defense the way we played (Wednesday), Hurley said.Arizona State took a 66-52 lead early in the second half, only to see The Citadel go on a 10-0 run to cut the lead to four with 14:01 to play. The Bulldogs, of the Southern Conference, kept it close for a good portion of the second half but could never take the lead. The Sun Devils pulled away right after the 10-minute mark.Kaelon Harris came off the bench to lead the Bulldogs with a career-high 30 points and Zane Najdawi tied his career-high with 28 points. The greatest thing is weve got nine freshmen. A lot of them got to grow up (Wednesday) and our leading scorer was a freshman, Citadel coach Duggar Baucom said. Well grow ffrom this and try to get better.ddddddddddddJustice, a part-time starter so far this season, hadnt scored more than eight points in a game this season. Its going to be my night one night, its going to be other guys nights on other night. So its not that big a deal to me, Justice said.BIG PICTUREThe Citadel: The Bulldogs entered Wednesday averaging 102.4 points per game. They scored over 100 for the fourth time this season but have given up a combined 257 points in back-to-back losses at Iowa State and ASU.Arizona State: Starting with its next game in the Bahamas, the Sun Devils will play six games in 23 days against teams that have made the NCAA Tournament with regularity in recent years. First up is Kentucky, followed by UNLV, Purdue, San Diego State, New Mexico State and Creighton.ITS Teh-SHUMP-aThe Sun Devils were hardly in danger of losing, but got one effective minute of action early in the first half from seldom-used post Jethro Tshisumpa. The 6-foot-10 freshman from the Democratic Republic of the Congo blocked three shots and made a layup to give ASU a 22-12 lead at the 13:12 mark of the first half.STAT OF THE NIGHTArizona State was 8 of 16 from 3-point range in the first half, 7 of 15 at the free throw line. The Sun Devils turned things around at the line, hitting 21 of 22 free throws in the second half.TURNING POINTA dunk by Shannon Evans off a steal by Cunliffe gave the Sun Devils an 87-76 lead with 9:04 to play, and ASU led by no fewer than eight points the rest of the way.UP NEXTThe Citadel returns home to Charleston, South Carolina for its next five games, starting with Presbyterian on Monday.Arizona State heads to the Bahamas to face top-ranked Kentucky on Monday. ASU lost at then-No. 5 Kentucky on Dec. 12, 2015, 72-58, and is 0-4 against the Wildcats since 1991. ' ' '

WIGGINS, Miss. -- The president of the Mississippi NAACP is demanding a federal hate crime investigation after the parents of a black high school student said as many as four white students put a noose around their sons neck at school. No child should be walking down the hall or in a locker room and be accosted with a noose around their neck, president Derrick Johnson said Monday during a news conference in Wiggins. This is 2016, not 1916. This is America. This is a place where children should go to school and feel safe in their environment.Johnson said the incident happened Oct. 13 near a locker room at Stone High School in Wiggins.Hollis and Stacey Payton, parents of the alleged victim, attended the news conference but did not speak. Their son, a sophomore football player, was not with them and they did not release his name. The NAACP said the incident happened during a break in football practice and that the noose was yanked backward while on the students neck.Johnson would not say whether noose left any marks on the black student. According to a statement from the students family, he returned to football practice after the incident, said Ayana Kinnel, a spokeswoman for the state NAACP.Stone High has about 800 students, about a quarter of whom are black according to state figures. Thats not a particularly high percentage in Mississippi, where half of nearly 500,000 public school students are African-American.Wiggins, 35 miles north of the Gulf of Mexico, is a logging town. Many people commute from the 18,000-resident county to jobs in Gulfport and other coastal cities.Mississippi has struggled with a history of racial division. It is the last state that still incorporates the Confederate battle emblem on its state flag. In 2014, two out-of-state students at the University of Mississippi placed a noose on the campus statue of James Meredith, the black student who integrated Ole Miss in 1962. Both pleaded guilty to using a threat of force to intimidate African-American students and employees. Neither attends the school anymore.Names and ages of the other students allegedly involved in the Stone High School incident werent immediately released. The Stone County Sheriffs Department provides officers at local schools and typically is the first to respond to incidents. Sheriffs Capt. Ray Boggs said officials believe something close to what the Paytons described did happen and said hes still investigating. He said all the students involved are younger than 17 and he expects any charges would be filed in youth court, where records are closed to the public. Its probably one of the hardest cases Ill ever handle in my career, because of the nature of it, said Boggs, who is black. Have I ever had to deal with something like this? No, not from a high school.Johnson said he wants the teenagers charged as adults. Thats allowable in certain situations for people between ages 13 and 16 in Mississippi. He cited federal prosecutions of young people from Rankin County for hate crimes following the 2011 death of a man run down in the parking lot of Jackson motel as an example of what federal involvement could bring. Most of those people were charged as adults, although there was evidence of at least one unusual federal juvenile prosecution. There is absolutely a role for federal law enforcement, Johnson said.Johnson said Stacey Payton was advised against filing a police report because the father of one of the alleged assailants is a former law enforcement officer. Boggs said he talked to Stacey Payton and thats not true. He said he told her that pursuing criminal charges could result in hard feelings among students that could make her sons life harder at school.Stone High School Principal Adam Stone referred comment to Superintendent Inita Owen. She and school board attorney Sean Courtney didnt respond to phone calls and emails seeking comment. Johnson said the Paytons have received no official word about punishments from school officials. Johnson said school district policy calls for immediate expulsion of students who commit assault.Carissa Bolden of Wiggins, the mother of a middle school student, attended the NAACP news conference Monday and said white students have been flying the Mississippi flag from their vehicles. The upper left corner of the state flag used since 1894 has the Confederate battle emblem -- a red field topped by a blue X with 13 white stars. Bolden said she sees a connection between the flag and the noose incident.I feel like it escalated from them allowing kids to bring Confederate flags to school, Bolden said.----Emily Wagster Pettus reported from Jackson, Mississippi. Jaquiski Tartt Super Bowl Jersey . He bettered that with a long-range blast that went in off the goal frame in the 18th, and converted a penalty in the 72nd after Diego Mainz was sent off for fouling Aduriz with only the goalkeeper to beat. Joe Staley Super Bowl Jersey . Tomas Berdych and Radek Stepanek defeated Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac 6-2, 6-4, 7-6 (4) on the indoor hard-court at Belgrade Arena. The victory improved the Czech pairs impressive cup doubles record to 14-1. KWaun Williams Super Bowl Jersey . -- Running backs Darren McFadden and Rashad Jennings were back at practice for the Oakland Raiders on Wednesday despite being hampered by hamstring injuries. As the last of the soggy footprints were made near Lake Geneva, there was significance but not suspense. The Evian Championship did not have a taut finish like this years ANA Inspiration or KPMG Womens PGA Championship, and there was no pivotal caught-on-camera rules infraction as in the U.S. Womens Open. Even the Ricoh Womens British had tightened for a time in the final round before Ariya Jutanugarn, who had lost most of a big lead, reasserted control. The only doubt as In Gee Chun played the back nine on Sunday in Evian-les-Bains, France, was whether she would set a major championship scoring record in winning wire-to-wire.By saving par on the 18th hole at Evian Resort Golf Club, Chun made history, breaking the mark for lowest 72-hole score in relation to par not only in womens golf but bettering the mens standard too. Sure, the final major of the LPGA season was played on a vulnerable course saturated by rain -- and where Hyo Joo Kim shot a major-record 61 in 2014 -- but only seven golfers finished double-digits under par.Chun, a 22-year-old South Korean, was just in another league, shooting 21-under 263 for a 4-stroke victory over countrywomen So Yeon Ryu and Sung Hyun Park.Chuns tour de force performance surpassed the womens major record of 19 under shared by Dottie Pepper (1999 Kraft Nabisco Championship), Karen Stupples (2004 Ricoh Womens British Open), Cristie Kerr (2010 LPGA Championship) Yani Tseng (2011 LPGA Championship) and Inbee Park (2015 KPMG Womens PGA). Chun finished one stroke lower than the 20 under posted by Jason Day (2015 PGA Championship) and Henrik Stenson (2016 Open Championship). Chuns 263 score was shots better than Betsy Kings 72-hole total in the 1992 LPGA Championship.Beyond the scoring achievements, the most notable aspect of Chuns week is that it is her second LPGA win, following a surprise victory in the 2015 U.S. Womens Open, when she rallied past Amy Yang and Stacy Lewis in the final round. The only other player whose first two LPGA victories came in majors is South Korean legend Se Ri Pak, who won the LPGA Championship and U.S. Womens Open during a seven-week span in 1998. At the recent Rio Olympics, Chun tied for 13th in the womens golf competition as a member of the Republic of Korea team coached by Pak.Shes a rookie right now, but shes not really like a rookie, Ryu said of Chun, who has nine career titles on the LPGA of Korea Tour and was that circuits leading money-winner in 2015 prior to joining the LPGA in 2016.Chun got off to a solid start this season then was hurt on an escalator at the Singapore airport when the father of fellow player Ha Na Jang lost control of a piece of luggage and it tumbled into Chun. A lower-back injury caused Chun to miss three tournaments, with the incident heavily covered by Korean media and devoureed by that countrys golf fans.dddddddddddd Some of these fans believed Jangs family didnt apologize fully and that Jang celebrated too enthusiastically after winning a tournament that Chun missed because of injury. The accident and surrounding turmoil roiled Chuns rookie LPGA campaign, but she regained her mojo at the Olympics. I got my passion back at the Olympics, Chun told reporters after winning in France. Golf had become fun.The Evian victory gets the Chun narrative fully off the soap opera arc and back to what has been known since even before she won the Open at Lancaster Country Club last July: The complete player with a disarming smile could well be the heir apparent to seven-time major winner Inbee Park in the impressive chain of Korean womens stars. Although Park, who recently turned 28, won gold at Rio, she missed three 2016 majors, including the Evian, because of a thumb injury; having qualified for the LPGA Hall of Fame, she might be short of goals and eager to start a family.Chuns victory made it six consecutive years that a Korean has won at least one LPGA major title, a streak dating to Ryus win in the 2011 U.S. Womens Open.Since 1998, when Pak burst on the scene, South Koreans have won 24 womens majors compared to 23 by Americans. Dont be surprised if Sung Hyun Park, a star in her native country who led the 2016 U.S. Womens Open after 36 holes -- and like Jutanugarn wows with her power -- joins Chun in having major success during 2017.Just as the tour has week to week, the LPGA majors were mostly a youthful domain this season. U.S. Womens Open champion Brittany Lang, at 30, was by far the oldest winner. Chun completed a young quartet of champions: Lydia Ko (19, ANA Inspiration), Brooke Henderson (18, KPMG Womens PGA) and Jutanugarn (20, Ricoh Womens British). Ko didnt factor at the Evian but with a runner-up finish at the Womens PGA and tie for third at the U.S. Womens Open won the Rolex Annika Major Award (named for 10-time major champion Annika Sorenstam) for the most outstanding overall record in the five majors.Ko and Henderson were among Chuns fellow players who greeted the amiable winner after she completed the final round at Evian.I think shes an amazing ambassador for the womens game, Ko, herself quite popular with peers, told the media. You can kind of see that from her personality. Shes always smiling, and shes there for other people. I think thats why everybody really likes her, and you can see that by the many of us that came out to support her and celebrate and spray champagne [and] water on her.Back home, there no doubt were plenty of toasts with Hite beer, one of Chuns sponsors, and not for the last time either. LONDON -- Gareth Southgate will remain in charge of Englands national team.An English Football Association panel has decided to hire Southgate as Sam Allardyces permanent successor, people with knowledge of the situation said Tuesday. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to discuss the decision before the FA board ratifies the appointment on Wednesday at the national teams St. Georges Park base in central England.Southgate was hastily promoted from the under-21 team in September when Allardyce was forced out after one game over unguarded comments to undercover reporters posing as businessmen. CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Jordane Carverys first career goal in the 25th minute of the first half and a solid defensively display throughout the match lifted the visiting LSU Soccer team to its first victory of the 2016 season with a 1-0 win over host College of Charleston in Sundays finale at the Charleston Classic at Patriots Point. The Tigers (1-1) have come away from Patriots Point with shutouts in each of their two matches all-time with the Cougars (0-2) after also picking up a 4-0 win in their inaugural meeting on Sept. 21, 2007.Im really pleased with our response from Friday night, said LSU head coach Brian Lee. Sunday afternoons are mostly about fight and how hard you work for the full 90 minutes, and I think our players did a good job of that to earn a result today. This gives us something positive to build on as we get ready for George Washington on Thursday. The Tigers sustained early pressure in the match as freshman Marlena Cutura and junior Debbie Hahn forced Cougar goalkeeper Lauren Killian into action in the opening stages. Killian went low to her left to deny LSUs Cutura the opening goal on an open effort from the top of the box in the ninth minute before making a leaping save on Hahns looping header from a corner kick just four minutes later.Carvery would give the visitors the lead midway through the first half with her first goal as an LSU Tiger as she buried Cuturas fourth corner kick of the match with a header at the far post in the 25th minute.I thought we played much better than we did our first game. We came out with a bang, we worked hard. We worked as a team, as a unit, which is something we needed to improve on, Carvery said after the match. Marlena had great crosses into the box, and I just finished off a chance. It was an easy one to finish where she served it in.The Tigers threatened to double their aadvantage into the second half when senior Summer Clarke skipped across the box and fired an open strike on the hour that was deflected out of play for a corner kick and junior Jorian Baucom fired on frame from eight yards following an entry pass by sophomore Alex Thomas in the 62nd minute.ddddddddddddBaucom was later denied a breakaway attempt with less than two minutes to play that might have sealed the victory when she stepped in front of a Cougar free kick near midfield and found herself off to the races.Carvery, Thomas and Hahn teamed with senior Megan Lee at the back to stifle the Cougars going forward as they limited the home side to just six shots in the match. Sophomore goalkeeper Caroline Brockmeier saved each of the three shots on target she faced to earn her first clean sheet as an LSU Tiger.Debbie (Hahn) did an amazing job coming in at the back. She had a great attitude when she came in. She did a great job listening to Megan (Lee) and I about when to go and when to tuck in, Carvery continued. Alex (Thomas) did a great job blocking shots and anticipating what was going on. We just worked well as a unit, which is what a back four needs to do.Caroline communicates with us and tells us what to do and where to be when we need some direction, who to play it to. Shes strong on crosses and makes great saves, which is what we need her to do.With their season-opening weekend at the Charleston Classic at Patriots Point now in the books, the Tigers will welcome George Washington to Baton Rouge on Thursday night for their 2016 home opener that is ready to kick off at 7 p.m. CT at the LSU Soccer Stadium. They follow with another home match against visiting Colgate next Sunday, Aug. 28, at Noon. ' ' '

Lewis Hamilton will not be fined for the comments he made directly after his retirement at the Malaysian Grand Prix, something Niki Lauda thinks were fully acceptable in the heat of the moment.Hamiltons hopes of a fourth world title were dealt a major blow in Sepang as his engine failed while he led the race 16 laps from the chequered flag. The reigning world champion caused a stir directly after the race by telling TV reporters something does not feel right with his numerous engine problems this year, adding that he felt someone did not want him to win.Speaking several hours later at his print media session Hamilton clarified his remarks, saying he has 100 percent faith in Mercedes and that he was referring to a higher power. Lauda, the teams non-executive chairman, has no problem with what Hamilton originally told the media.?He will not be fined, I can tell you that, Lauda said. If a driver is upset ... Ive been upset a couple of times in my racing career and I said some rubbish to. I dont want to say he said rubbish, but these things can happen, the emotion. Its fully acceptable and theres nothing wrong. Nothing wrong.Lauda is also happy the someone originally refered to by Hamilton, who has referenced his religion numerous times throughout his career, was not a specific reference to an individual at Mercedes. He can mean anybody, he can look up! Honestly, this is a wide interpretation. I agree. If I am unlucky and I need to find an explanation I say to myself, if there is a God, then Ive done something wrong or he doesnt like me, or whatever. The retirement, coupled with Nico Rosbergs third-place finish, means Hamilton trails his teammate by 23 points with five races remaining.? Dario Saric Jersey . TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Coaches view distractions the same as injuries -- the fewer the better. Thats why Atlantic Coast Conference coaches are cautious about doing an all-access television show such as Showtimes A Season With. Many dont see the return on their investment as being worth it.I would at least want to hear them paint the picture of what it was really going to be like before I said yes or no, Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente said. Many ACC coaches share Fuentes view -- they see the benefits, especially with recruiting, but wonder if those outweigh the potential distractions that could occur during four months of shooting.Florida State has opened its doors for this years series. The first episode aired on Sept. 6, which was the day after the Seminoles season-opening win over Ole Miss and airs on Tuesdays through Nov. 29.The series is similar to NFL Films Hard Knocks: Training Camp that airs on HBO during the preseason. North Carolina State coach Dave Doeren likes watching both to see how teams handle preseason practices. But when it comes to finding a strategic edge, especially with the Wolfpack hosting the Seminoles on Saturday, he didnt expect to find one. While the show may sway a couple future recruits, there are concerns about the potential distraction and impact it could have on a teams season. The Seminoles were considered to be a national championship contender before the season started but are 5-3 and ranked 19th. It is the first time since 2011 that they have entered November with three or more losses.Youd have to look at in totality and see what it did for you. Its certainly not helping them, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson said the programs impact on the Seminoles. Theyre 5-3. I dont know a team whos ever done it who had a good season.Stephen Espinoza, the executive vice president of Showtime Sports, said the production crew and school are in constant contact about storylines but that the network retains creative control. Schools see a copy of the show before it airs but that is to make sure no NCAA compliance violations are taking place and there arent any student-athlete privacy issues, especially with injuries. The reasons why the show is successful is it is someone from the outside giving a loook at a program.dddddddddddd It is something different than what would be produced by a conference or school, Espinoza said. The bottom line is that it is a relationship of trust. Were trusting the school to be open and candid and theyre trusting us to be objective. The show is likely to give Florida State another boost with a national audience getting a behind the scenes look Jimo Fishers program.Fisher said that high school players who have come in for visits have liked how it gives them a deeper look at the program. It is a different experience but it is like they (the production crew) are part of the football staff now, Florida State running back Dalvin Cook said. Its good that we get to show everyone what we do and the life of an athlete in college.Espinoza said that the network would like to get a geographic mix in future seasons but that he would not be averse to another ACC team doing it next year.Clemson would fit Espinozas formula: an elite program with a compelling coach, but linebacker Ben Boulware cant see the Tigers doing it, especially since they ban social media during the season.People would get to see the ins and outs of what we do, but for the players I think its a distraction, he said. Those lights and cameras are cool probably for about a week, but that definitely would get annoying.Another unlikely school is Virginia. First-year coach Bronco Mendenhall did a similar series last year when he was at Brigham Young and still regrets the decision.People act differently when cameras are around, and no matter how long theyre there, there still is an effect, he said. Highs are a little higher and lows are a little lower, and theres more drama and less work because its more story. After doing it -- and I was the one that wanted it and agreed to it -- the return on investment didnt give the outcome I was thinking it would.---AP Sports Writers Aaron Beard in Raleigh, North Carolina, Pete Iacobelli in Clemson, South Carolina, Hank Kurz Jr. in Charlottesville, Virginia, and Charles Odum in Atlanta contributed to this report.---The APs college football page: collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil -- Hope Solo is blaming the American media for spreading fear about the Zika virus and other problems ahead of the Rio Games.Hoping to lead the U.S. womens soccer team to its fourth straight gold medal, Solo had expressed her own concerns before the Olympics. We havent made it to Rio yet and I have no idea what to expect in Rio, but its been beautiful here, Solo said ahead of Wednesdays opener against New Zealand, to be played in the same city where the U.S. men upset England in the 1950 World Cup.Its a little bit unfortunate because I think the American media has been really tough on [the] people of Brazil, Solo said. I feel a little bit bad because when you come here you learn for yourself. I think that weve been very hard on the local people. The Americans are trying to win a title for the second straight year following last years triumph in the Womens World Cup. Solo, in her third Olympics, said it seemed problems in Brazil were being blown out of proportion by media in the U.S.You look back in 2004 in Greece, and the same thing there, bad publicity surrounding the Games, and China as well, said the 35-year-old from Richland, Washington. I dont know why, but we like to sensationalize everything and scare people and then ... when the Games go on, everything goes on as planned, ends up being a beautiful tournament. And I expect no less here.Solo said she expects everything to be fine by the time the team gets to Rio despite the widespread concerns related to the Games, including Zika, water pollution, security and shoddy construction.Solo said she came to Brazil well prepared, especially against Zika.I actually spoke to three different infectious disease doctors and specialists, she explained. I spoke to them on the phone with my husband as well, and we got to a point where we asked enough questions. We prepared ourselves as best as possible and we got to a level of being as comfortable as we possibly can be.Im wearing mosquito repellent just in case -- I know the odds are very small, but you can never be too safe, she added. Im at a point in my life that I just want to be safe. Before traveling to Brazil, Solo posted on Twitter a few photos showing her concerns about Zika, including one of her wearing a hat with mosquito netting that covered her entire head and neck. The image prompted criticism against her in Brazil and caused her to apologize when she arrived in the country.I heard that there were some negative responses here in Brazil, she said. I never would want to offend the host country. In fact, Im cheering for Team USA, but besides Team USA, Im going to be cheering for the host country. Im very grateful for them for hosting the tournament. Honestly, everybody around here has been so just nice and genuine and it feels very warming to be here.Solo has been trying to avoid a trial on misdemeanor domestic violence charges after a 2014 incident at her sisters home, when the goalkeeper was accused of being intoxicated and assaulting her sister and 17-year-old nephew. Tweeting nearly cost Rilee Rossouw a chance to play for South Africa. It was 2011 and like so many other South Africans, Rossouw, then 21, took the teams quarter-final defeat to New Zealand at the World Cup hard. He published his disappointment in 140 characters. The post has since been deleted but one of the words used in it has not been forgotten: chokers. Its a term often used for the South African team by frustrated fans and the media. But when Rossouw used it, the consequences appeared to be dire.He later deleted the tweet but by then several South African players had seen it or been told about it, and even a winter break couldnt clear it from their memories. The next summer was Gary Kirstens first season as coach of the South African team and he ushered it in with a team-building camp at the luxury Arabella Golf Estate in the Western Cape. All the national players and those on the fringes, including Rossouw, were invited. It was there that Rossouw discovered the impact his remark had left. A source close to him revealed that while some players saw the lighter side of the tweet, most were so offended they refused to even shake his hand. The source felt Rossouws career was put on the back burner for more than two years as a result. Its impossible to say whether that was actually the case, but his numbers at the time make you wonder why he wasnt picked sooner. In the 2009-10 season, he was the leading run scorer in the first-class competition, with 1189 runs at 66.05 - a feat in itself because only five other players have scored more than 1000 runs in a franchise season in South Africa. In 2010-11, Rossouw was second in the list of top run-getters in the List A competition, behind Faf du Plessis, who was picked for the 2011 World Cup.Dean Elgar was picked to tour England in 2012 and Quinton de Kock and Farhaan Behardien to play New Zealand in early 2013 while Rossouw was left to toil in domestic cricket. He remained high on the run-scoring lists and was picked for South Africa A. Then it took a headline-grabbing performance to get the attention of the national selectors. On a South Africa A tour to Australia in August 2014, in an unofficial Test, Rossouw scored 231 and starred in a 343-run partnership with Temba Bavuma after their team had slipped to 59 for 4. South Africa A went on to win the match by eight wickets and the series 1-0.Although his runs had come in the longer format, there was only place for Rossouw in the limited overs. He was picked in South Africas squad to play an ODI tri-series in Zimbabwe. But his introduction to international cricket could not have been worse. In his first ten ODIs, between August 2014 and January 2015, Rossouw was dismissed for a duck five times, including twice against Zimbabwe. He became a laughing stock and many questioned his selection to the 2015 World Cup squad until the second ODI against West Indies, in Johannesburg. The match is remembered for AB de Villiers world-record 31-ball hundred, but for Rossouw it was the day he showed he belonged. Quinton de Kock was injured, so Rossouw was pushed up the order and he made his maiden international century in a 247-run opening stand with Hashim Amla.In the fifth ODI against West Indies, Rossouw, now back at No. 4, made 132. In a full-strength line-up, his chances of getting a regular run will always be slim but Rossouw seemed to be positioning himself as a batsman comfortable in the top as well as the middle order. From when he was a youngster, he dreamt of playing for South Africa and he always had a lot of confidence in his own ability, said Pat Botha, Rossouws friend an allrounder with the Knights franchise. He just did what he had to do.But then injuries interrupted his fine form. Rossouw was ruled out of the limited-overs leg of South Africa tour to India at the end of 2015 with a stress fracture to his foot. He recovered in time to play England at home in early 2016 and then travelled to the Caribbean for a tri-series in June. In his second match there, he dislocated his shoulder and had to return home, missing out on a T20 stint with Leicestershire as a result. He had only scored two half-centuries in 11 innings after the 2015 World Cup and was not due to play against Australia at home until de Villiers was ruled out.Rossouw was called up as a replacement even though he had initially been left out of the one-day squad so he could have more time to recover from his shoulder surgery. After he was rushed into the XI when Amla took ill before the first ODI against Australia, in Centurion, Rossouw scored 63.Amla recovered in time for the second ODI, and du Plessis, the stand-in captain for de Villiers, was keen to have him back, but the selectors stuck with Rossouw. This time he scored 75.In both matches, Rossouw was set and should have gone on to get a hundred but his shot selection let him down. However, he said he was confident about the way he chose to play and called the reverse sweep my shot even though it led to his downfall right off the first ball he faced from legspinner Adam Zampa in Centurion. When Amla returned to the XI, Rossouw was moved down the order and in the fifth ODI he converted his good start into a third one-day century. What was perhaps more impressive was that he scored those runs with a broken little finger, fractured while fielding in the previous match. When South Africa were leading the series 2-0 after the second game, Rossouw teased Australia, saying if they dont bounce back maybe they dont deserve to be the best team in the world.Rossouw may get plenty of lip from Australian players for his remarks if he makes his Test debut down under this month. But that looks unlikely since coach Russell Domingo has said that the Test batting line-up is settled. However Rossouw is very familiar with unlikely possibilities. Five years ago, the possibility of a player who had dared call his team-mates chokers going on to represent South Africa had seemed very unlikely. Look at where he is now. NAPLES, Fla. -- Harris English and Matt Kuchar won the Franklin Templeton Shootout on Saturday, holding off Wisconsin friends Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly by a stroke at Tiburon.English and Kuchar also won in 2013 in their first start together and finished second the last two years. Its a thrilling event to come out with a win, amazing feeling, Kuchar said. I think its just such a fun partnership weve had. Weve had such a good run. To have our last four events together, to have our track record be first, second, second, first is quite amazing.English eagled the par-5 17th and they closed with a 7-under 65 in better-ball play to finish at 28 under. We had some good action there and it kind of came down to the last couple holes and kind of set up perfect on 17 for me, English said. Really reachable par 5 and hit a really good drive off the tee and knew Kuch was in really good position so I could play really aggressive. Hit a really good 8-iron right where I wanted to and made about a 12-footer.Thats the difference in these events, Kuchar said. Pulling out some shots like that, getting an eagle, getting that two-shot swing, thats a big deal. This event comes down to you need to make birdies, you need to make some scores under par,, and to do it on the 17th hole today and the position and the situation we were in, it was a battle.ddddddddddddWe werent making a huge number of birdies. Its not like we were just battling with birdies, it was a fairly challenging day. But for Harris to come through and eagle 17 and give us that one-shot lead.Stricker and Kelly also shot 65.We just couldnt get that momentum, Stricker said. A shot here or there. Jerry played great. Wish I could have helped him out a couple more times. I had some putts at it I didnt make, but it was fun. Harris made an eagle. I knew somebody was going to do something there. It was just playing too short. He hit two great shots there at 17 and that was the difference really.English and Kuchar each earned $385,000. They opened with a 57 on Thursday in the scramble round and had a 66 on Friday in modified alternate shot.Charley Hoffman and Billy Horschel were third at 26 under after a 61.Lexi Thompson and Bryson DeChambeau tied for last at 16 under after a 67. Thompson became the second woman to compete in the event, following Annika Sorenstam with Fred Couples in 2006. ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO -- It had the sound, from an omen perspective, of the flat-out wrong address. A booking gone bad.Housing all those famous faces from the NBA on a luxury cruise liner called The Silver Cloud? At the Olympics? You were moved to question the wisdom of that choice once or twice in the early stages Sunday, when stubborn Serbia managed to hang with mighty Team USA for a quarter at Carioca Arena 1. You couldnt help but think: Imagine the storms and ridicule that would greet the Americans if they only managed to bring silver home from these Rio Games. And then Kevin Durant, turning ruthless in the last game well see him play before he starts his new under-the-microscope life with the increasingly villainous Golden State Warriors, staged a hostile international takeover to make you laugh at yourself for wasting any brain cells on the idea. There would be no storms, or lasting fears of silver, on this afternoon. The Americans ultimately rolled in a 96-66 rout, with Durant erupting for 24 of his 30 points by halftime -- 15 of them in the second quarter -- to turn an edgy 19-15 game after a period into a 23-point laugher at the break.Five mostly d-e-e-p 3s from Durant in the first half, with a couple of memorable dunks thrown in, put KD on a path to match his 30 points from the gold-medal game in London 2012, essentially clinched a record third gold medal for teammate Carmelo Anthony before the second half and ensured that Mike Krzyzewski would bid farewell to the international game with a 76-game winning streak to take back to Duke.Best of all, Durant made the Americans final hours on Brazilian soil their most comfortable of the whole trip. What followed after the break was a predictable in-game party for the Americans, with Durant eventually serving as head cheerleader at the end thanks to a lead that stretched as high as 41 points, all of which banished the memories of those nervy three single-digit victories in their first seven games here.We were pissed going into the locker room, Durant said the other day, reflecting on Serbias near upset of the tournaments overwhelming favorites in group play on Aug. 12. Not because we wanted to blow every team out. Just because we didnt play well at all.But now Im just like, Hey, man, if we lose this game, we lose it. If we win it, then great, we move on. That helps me. It may not help other players, but it helps me. Ive just embraced who I am as a basketball player. He truly couldnt have looked more comfortable in his last act on the Rio stage. A summer that began with U.S. players loathing the Molten brown-and-white ball used in international play and struggling to adjust to the slightly shorter 3-point line came to a close with Durant routinely squaring up from far beyond NBA range and hitting triple after triple. This one changed completely once Krzyzewski put reserves Paul George, Kyle Lowry, Jimmy Butler and DeMarcus Cousins around Durant. The Serbs couldnt cope with their length and athleticism and pressure on the ball, then watched helplessly as Durant sailed in for a slam and a 45-25 cushion when multiple defenders rushed out to try to crowd him on the perimeter.Making 3s was the Serbs only realistic shot of hanging in?, but they were hounded into fatal 4-for-24 shooting from deep. Any remaining hope was snuffed out by Team USAs crushing 54-33 edge on the boards. As Durant said after the Yanks semifinal win over Spain: Weve got two lineups -- guys who can just score and we got energy lineups -- and we mix them together pretty well.Team Energy doomed the runners-up this time, with Cousins (11 of his 13 points in the first half) causing plenty of trouble himself while his Serbian boss -- Sacramento Kings general manager Vlade Divac -- watched helplessly himself from the stands.Anthony was scoreless in the first half and managed just seven points in the finale, but it never mattered. The rout was on and allowed Team USA to fly home Sunday night with a passable average victory margin of 22.5 for the tournament after its struggles in pool play.We never said we was gonna run through everybody, Anthony told ESPN earlier in the tournament. We never said that we was gonna win every game by 30 or 40. The games that we do, we do. The games that we dont, we dont.Serbia, truth be told, was surely fearful that it would fall in the do category of routs, since many international teams quietly subscribe to the theory that, in tournaments such as these, youre only going to get one real shot to beat the Americans. No matter who they bring. Its why there were certifiable murmurs that Australia, after such a great start in Group A, was legitimately weighing the prospect of playing its NBAers limited minutes in the second half of its Aug. 10 encounter with Team USA, believing that it might be better to save its supposed best for a potential rematch in the medal round.Turns out that the Aussies never got that second chance after getting unexpectedly smoked by Serbia in the semis, while the Serbs went on to validate the one-shot-only theory by steadily fading away once Durant got hot, turning this into a virtual rerun of the 2014 FIBA World Cup final in Spain that Team USA won by 37.How will this incarnation of the U.S. national team be remembered? Too soon to say.Yet it was clear on the U.S. bench at the end, amid a hearty round of hugs for Anthony once the expected medal shade of gold began to sink in, that Krzyzewski was as fond of this group as any of the squads that preceded it.Its been the ultimate honor of my life in coaching, Coach K said this week, and Ive coached for 41 years. Dean Lowry Super Bowl Jersey . Malkin got tangled up with Detroits Luke Glendening early in the third period and his left skate took the brunt of collision with the boards behind Pittsburghs net. Rashan Gary Super Bowl Jersey . Booth picked up 65 caps after making her national team debut in 2002 at the age of 17. She most recently played for Sky Blue FC of the National Womens Soccer League. "It just felt like it was my time to move on," she said in a phone interview from her hometown of Burlington, Ont. Before Keshav Maharaj had turned three, Kiran More looked at his palms and predicted: This child will be a cricketer.More was not angling for a career as a clairvoyant, but as a former gloveman and with the knowledge that Keshavs father, Athmanand, was also a wicketkeeper, he must have seen something. As it turned out, it was not the palms that held Keshavs future, but his fingers. Two decades later, Keshav has made a career as a left-arm spinner to fulfill Mores prophecy and his fathers dream.Athmanand played for Natal B during the bad old days when sport was segregated. He knew someone of his skin colour would not be able to challenge for higher honours but immersed himself in the sport anyway. It was difficult for us, but despite the challenges we faced, we managed to produce some outstanding players. We enjoyed the game and we played it hard, Athmanand told ESPNcricinfo. It was a big part of our lives. So big that it consumed Athmanands young son. When Keshav wasnt receiving throwdowns, he was rubbing shoulders with the whos who of the cricket world when South Africa were being welcomed back to the international community. Players like Sachin Tendulkar, Mohammad Azharuddin and Pravin Amre.In 1992, when India travelled to South Africa for the Friendship tour, Athmanand was among the many friends the players made. Back then, it was commonplace for members of the Indian community to host the visiting team for meals, and the Maharaj home was one that the players visited.More became a family friend and remains in touch. He was the first person to give Athmanand the confidence to believe that a cricket career was possible, albeit not for him. With his playing days behind him, Athmanand worked in education, enjoyed a stint as deputy director general of sport in the Kwa-Zulu Natal Province and completed cricket coaching courses, all the while giving his son lessons in the game. Keshav played in the backyard, in the Bakers Mini-Cricket progamme (a developmental sports programme for primary school kids), and at school. He was a left-arm seamer and a decent batsman. One day in the nets, Keshav was mad about something and decided to bowl spin. He told the Sunday Independent that nobody stopped him from making the switch and the new bowling style simply stuck. No one was happier than Athmanand .From my experience as a wicketkeeper, I had learned a lot about spin, so I tried to mould him that way.Keshavs twirling earned him places in a team two age groups above his level and made him a star at Northwood School, the alma mater of Shaun Pollock. By the time he was 18, he had become a regular in the school XI.His father remained his most loyal supporter. I followed him everywhere and kept a scorebook with his performances. I still have it at home, Athmanand said.In 2008, despite making it to the provincial Under-19 side, Keshav was not picked in South Africas U-19 World Cup squad. He confessed to City Press that he was probably a little on the large side, which may have counted against him.Still, he progressed. He was chosen for the South African academy, given a rookie contract at the Dolphins and was on the fringes of the franchise side. Athmanand allowed his son all the time he needed to see if he could carve a career in cricket because he saw in Keshav someone with a good head on his shoulders, who is very focused and very determined in everything he does. He knows exactly what he wants and I told him I would ssupport him in that.ddddddddddddBut he also advised Keshav to have a plan B. Keshav took up a marketing degree part-time but he honed his plan A. He went to play in the Sussex Premier League in 2013, an adventure that took him away from home comforts and his mothers kitchen.I turned my life around. I lost weight and worked on my fitness, Keshav said. When Keshav returned, Dolphins team-mate Imraan Khan remembers that he looked like a completely different person, with a more diligent attitude towards eating. Cooking became a passion for him. He started a food blog and has been part of cooking shows on the local radio station East Coast Radio .Hes a pretty good cook, Athmanand said. The leaner Keshav enjoyed vastly improved results. In the 2014-15 season, he was sixth on the first-class wicket charts with 36 at 29.38. Last season he was seventh with the same number of wickets at 32.Even though there was a slew of spinners on the South African radar - Imran Tahir, Robin Peterson, Dane Piedt, Simon Harmer and Aaron Phangiso - Athmanand felt Keshav was doing too well to be ignored. There were times when we thought he would get a shot, but with team balance and that kind of thing, we always said that if it came, that would be good and if not, he would just keep doing his thing, because eventually he would get there. Statistics play a very important role.In the first match of this summers first-class season, Athmanand was proved right. Sort of. Keshav got a career-best haul of 13 for 157 to bowl Dolphins to an innings victory over Warriors in East London. But his place in the Test squad had been decided after he took his first wicket in the game. After the second days play, with Warriors on 104 for 1 in reply to Dolphins 478, in which Keshav had contributed a 71-ball 72, he got a phone call.It was Linda Zondi [the convener of the national selection panel], and he just told Keshav, Well batted, and then said that he needs his passport, Ahtmanand said. I told him it might mean he was selected but that he mustnt jump to any conclusions.Over the next two days, Keshav ran through the Warriors line-up, taking six more wickets in the first innings and six more in the follow-on. Then he found out he was going to Australia. He was surprised, but it is also a very well-deserved call-up, said Imraan. Over the last few seasons what he has really worked on is consistency in length and thats what he is so good at. When we have needed a spinner to stop the game, he has done exactly that, but at the same time he has remained an attacking bowler and has always picked up wickets.South Africa are searching for exactly that kind of spinner, especially in a series where they expect the quicks to dominate. Whether that will give Keshav the edge over Tabraiz Shamsi, a left-arm chinaman and the only other spinner in the squad, remains to be seen.Keshavs family members are unlikely to travel to Australia to watch the series because of the time it will take to get their visas and Athmanand is busy getting Keshavs new flat ready for occupation. But regardless of whether he gets the opportunity to watch his son walk out in South Africa colours, Athmanand is ecstatic. It will be fantastic if he gets his first cap, but even if he doesnt on this tour, he has made us all very proud. We know his journey begins now. ' ' '
