WASHINGTON -- With Stephen Strasburg joining Joe Ross as sidelined members of the Washington Nationals starting rotation, the teams young prospects like A.J. Cole are filling the void.Coles latest effort was done in by one bad inning as he surrendered two third-inning homers in Washingtons 4-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday night.Peter Bourjos led off the third with a blast off the left field foul pole and, with two outs, Ryan Howard lifted a fly ball that carried over the fence in center. He just made a couple of pitches that he wished he had back tonight, manager Dusty Baker said. One homer hit the foul pole and the other one scraped the wall. He seems kind of unfazed by the challenges of the big leagues.Cole (1-2), coming off his first major league win, allowed four runs and five hits in five innings. He struck out eight batters without a walk.Ive always believed in myself as being a big league pitcher, Cole said, and Ive got to be able to show that, and thats what Im doing right now.The Nationals received hopeful news regarding Strasburg, who left his start in the third inning Wednesday night after feeling a pinch in the back of his elbow.Strasburg has a strained flexor mass in his elbow and the Nationals dont know when he will pitch again, but Baker and director of athletic training Paul Lessard voiced optimism after an MRI revealed no ligament damage. We have young guys here that I know they can throw, catcher Jose Lobaton said. Hopefully (Reynaldo) Lopez and A.J. can be good for the team.Alec Asher (1-0) pitched six innings of two-hit ball coming off a suspension for the Phillies.Asher, acquired from the Rangers in the trade for Cole Hamels, ended last season in the Phillies starting rotation and went 0-6 with a 9.31 ERA in seven starts. The right-hander pitched to contact, walking one batter without a strikeout, and throwing 75 pitches in earning his first major league victory.I felt like I wasnt myself at the end of last year and I kind of let the moment get to me, Asher said. I just said Im going to go out there and have fun.Asher (1-0) was suspended for 80 games while on the disabled list with Triple-A Lehigh Valley in June after a positive drug test. He made four minor league appearances beginning in late August and his suspension ended Sept. 4.Everythings in the past now, Asher said. Its unfortunate what happened. Theres nothing I can do but come up here and pitch now.The Phillies snapped a nine-game losing streak against the Nationals.Trailing 4-0, Washington loaded the bases with one out in the eighth inning. Daniel Murphy hit a sacrifice fly to the warning track and Bryce Harper struck out.Jeanmar Gomez pitched the ninth for his 36th save.Howards homer was career No. 378, tying him with former Nationals manager Matt Williams for 72nd on the all-time list.DOUBLE DOINGSMurphy picked up his 40th double of the season, matching his career high. Hes the first second baseman in Nationals history (2005-present) to post a 40-double season.TRAINERS ROOMNationals: Normally (these injuries) come around very well with treatment and strengthening programs, Lessard said of Strasburgs elbow. Its not a season-ending injury, but we still need to take time (so) that hes nice and strong because of his past.... Baker said RHP Ross (right shoulder inflammation) is progressing well and the team is trying to determine where hell pitch next with few minor league games remaining.UP NEXTPhillies: RHP Jake Thompson (1-5, 6.48) makes his seventh career start and second against the Nationals. He allowed two runs and seven hits in seven innings of a 4-0 loss to Washington on Aug. 29.Nationals: RHP Tanner Roark (14-8, 2.89) looks to continue his recent mastery of the Phillies. Hes 3-0 with a 0.64 ERA versus Philadelphia this season. His career mark against them is 5-5 with a 3.81 ERA in 11 games, including nine starts. Some of the sports stories The Associated Press is covering Wednesday. A full Sports Digest will be sent by about 3 p.m. All times EST:- For every Peyton Manning who survived a rough rookie year on his way to NFL stardom, theres a much longer list of players rushed onto the field too early or with not enough help before being discarded in the continuing search for the franchise quarterback. Not even being picked first or second overall is a guarantee, but the first 24 games of a career are a pretty good measure of future success -- or failure.- BALTIMORE -- The Baltimore Ravens understand how embarrassing it would be to lose to the winless Cleveland Browns on national television. They would rather focus on the benefits of a victory, which would thrust them into sole possession of first place in the AFC North.- The Cleveland Browns are winless, 0-9 for the first time in franchise history. They are ranked dead last at No. 32 in the AP Pro32. And now they must play on a short week at their hated rival, the Ravens -- who used to be the Browns before fleeing to Baltimore in 1996.- Nick Saban is on the verge of another milestone victory, another number that gives a glimpse at how dominant his teams have been at Alabama. A victory by the Crimson Tide against Mississippi State on Saturday in Tuscaloosa will be Sabans 40th when Alabama has been ranked No. 1, matching Bobby Bowden and Woody Hayes for the most by a coach.- While offensive stars like Lamar Jackson and Deshaun Watson more often than not command the lions share of the ACC limelight on game day, there are plenty of stars on the other sidde of the ball who have helped elevate the conference to new heights.dddddddddddd There is no Heisman hype for the Big 12 Conference, even with some impressive performances this season from players like Oklahoma receiver Dede Westbrook and Texas running back DOnta Foreman. Still, the Big 12 isnt likely to have a player in New York next month for the Heisman Trophy ceremony. Maybe next year.- COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- Texas A&Ms Trevor Knight is the highest profile graduate transfer in the Southeastern Conference this season, jumping in to fill a major void at quarterback for the 10th-ranked Aggies. However, teams across the league are sprinkled with players who moved into the SEC as graduate students after careers at other schools.- PHOENIX -- On the last full day of the annual general managers meeting, Major League Baseball goes over possible rules changes.- MIAMI -- Dwyane Wade will play Thursday in Miami for the 525th time, and for the first time in some other teams uniform. When the Chicago Bulls visit the Heat, itll be a homecoming for the three-time NBA champion.- COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Some of Americas best soccer players returned this week to central Ohio, where a 20,000-seat stadium named for its insurance company sponsor is considered a spiritual home of the mens national team.- East Kilbrides players are the talk of Scottish soccer and beyond thanks to a 27-match winning run that has the tiny community-led club from the outskirts of Glasgow dreaming big. PHOENIX -- Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Daniel Hudson has re-torn the ligament in his right elbow, and the team says its staff is exploring all medical options. That potentially includes a second Tommy John reconstructive surgery. Hudson had his first such surgery last July and had progressed to the point of making a rehab start Tuesday for Double-A Mobile. But he left the mound after feeling stiffness in the elbow, and the subsequent exam in Phoenix uncovered the second tear. Two seasons ago, Hudson was 16-12 with a 3.49 ERA. Last season, he struggled to a 3-2 mark with a 7.35 ERA before the elbow injury was discovered. The New York Islanders may be in search for a new captain next season. According to Newsday, sources say defenceman Mark Streit has turned down the teams best offer and will become an unrestricted free agent on July 5. Last season, the native of Bern, Switzerland scored six goals and added 21 assists for 27 points in 48 games. The 35-year-old veteran missed the entire 2011-12 season with a shoulder injury. Originally drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 2004, Streit signed with the Islanders as an unrestricted free agent in 2008. Orange Air Max 2018 . You wont see that in any coaching manual is one of those obliquely slippery phrases that manages to deliver its core message of admiration wrapped up in a cloth of mild distaste, and is rarely heard other than on TMS or one of its many simpering fan progs. Visit a village green on an April Sunday, however, when the long shadows cast by the pavilion can preserve the frost until tea (or in this wettest of Junes, visit a field so cut up by a winters worth of football boots and a months worth of spikes, it would be flatter if freshly ploughed), and you may witness res and verba in perfect metaphorical alignment. That is to say, batsman and commentator conspire to give the term agricultural a bad name.In village cricket, of course, the commentator is a collective comprising the occupants of the office, namely the close fielders arranged around the wicketkeeper. It is traditional for manager and staff to keep up a running commentary on the batsmans efforts to send the ball hither and thither in order to hasten his own journey back to the warmth of the pavilion, and to start each idiosyncratic snippet of song that subsequently travels around the outfield in a sort of Mexican karaoke. What the f*** was that shot meant to be? is perhaps the village equivalent of the professional commentators coaching manual barb. Invariably the response runs something along the lines of four runs. After all, theres unorthodox and unorthodox, and in cricket, a shots value is ultimately considered in direct proportion to its outcome. Even by Sir Geoffrey. While the professional may deal in reverse lap cuts in between proper cricket shots, these are merely those shots that do not yet feature in the manual, but for every effort to execute an elegant cover drive effected by your typical Sunday batsman, five portmanteau shots will be fashioned from the leftovers of other sports they may have played, watched or perhaps simply heard tell. Ive seen forearm smashes, topspin lobs, 9 irons, heaves, hoicks, flails and mows, airy wafts (or elegant leaves), flat-bat smacks, and dozens of others as yet nameless. Just as there are shots not yet in the manual, there are shots that never will be, and it is these shots, these Sunday inventions, these unidentifiable mongrels, these teechniques practised in the Dark Net, that place where intention is never undone by lack of talent, it is these shots that feature in a sort of anti-manual.ddddddddddddIt is in this tome, this as-yet unwritten work of cricket lore (Wisntden, perhaps) carried in the hearts and minds of Sunday cricketers everywhere, that we gain access to the truths of this great game. And the truth is that cricket, real cricket, is not the game played by the professionals but the one played by us lot. In the professional game, orthodoxy is challenged by finely honed athletes seeking that extra fraction of a percentage of performance, as it is in these infinitesimal advantages that games are won and lost. In real cricket, in my cricket, our cricket, orthodoxy is simply challenged. We know what were meant to be doing, and while aiming to hit the top of off stump or bowling down the corridor of uncertainty is the theory, practice tells us that one of the most dangerous deliveries is the full toss. Its not simply the power of the unexpected so much as the raft of opportunities it offers the batsman. Confronted with an embarrassment of sure-fire scoring options the most common reaction is to gently lob it to the nearest fielder for catching practice. Filthy, is the word youll hear: perfect, is the truth. As batsmen, we know we ought to play straight, through the line, foot to the pitch, elbow high, and all that gallimaufry, but more often than not we simply stand and deliver. See ball, hit ball. Or in my case, see ball, leave ball, discover the bowler has one that cuts back sharply. Not a good leave, opined the office manager. Au contraire, it was an excellent leave - confident, considered, comprehensive. If only Id played my natural game, namely no foot movement, play very late, watch bowler begin celebrations, before, out of nowhere, jamming my bat down to meet the ball in desperation, then I would have lived to face the next ball. But no, I played properly. Textbook, one might say. Unfortunately the bowler had been reading the same textbook, and he was a few pages ahead of me. If only Id trusted the occult knowledge of the Dark Net. ' ' '

HOMESTEAD, Fla. -- Jimmie Johnson attempts a drive into NASCAR history.Kyle Busch would love to spoil Johnsons record run with a racing milestone of his own and win back-to-back Sprint Cup championships.Joey Logano and Carl Edwards just want to join the championship club. The four finalists have raced each other for 35 weeks -- and rode bikes, played video games and shared laughs in the lead-up to the finale Sunday at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The top finisher among the four contenders will be the NASCAR Sprint Cup champion. Under the one-race elimination format, Kevin Harvick in 2014 and Busch in 2015 both won the finale to take the title.Johnson, one of NASCARs greats, would stamp himself in the record book with a record-tying seventh championship. Johnson would match Dale Earnhardt and Richard Petty as the only drivers with seven Cup championships.I know that Im as close to this opportunity as Ive ever been, but Im not climbing in that car Sunday saying, `Ive got to win seven, Johnson said. Im saying, `Ive got to win a championship.Johnson, Busch, Logano or Edwards could leave Florida a champion.Tony Stewart is simply ready to walk away.Stewart, the three-time Cup champion, ends of one racings great careers when he retires following an almost two-decade NASCAR stint. There hasnt been any part of my career that I didnt enjoy, Stewart said. Here are some other items of note for Sundays race:SPONSOR DISCONNECTThe championship is decided on the Sprint stage for the final time.Sprint disconnected with NASCAR, ending its title sponsorship of the top series following this season. NASCAR heads into the offseason without a sponsor announcement, a troubling sign for the series already faced with dwindling attendance and sagging TV ratings.Sprints exit means NASCAR will enter a new entitlement agreement for just the fourth time since 1971, when RJ Reynolds began its 33-year sponsorship of the top series through its Winston brand. RJR pulled out after the 2003 season and Nextel stepped in until Sprints corporate merger. If you look at whats going on in the NFL and the viewership, all the sponsors watch that, team owner Rick Hendrick said. The good news is we have not slipped as much as some of the other folks.FORD, FIRST?Logano is trying to become the first Ford driver to win the championship since Kurt Busch in 2004.Theres a heck of an investment we all make in this sport, said Dave Pericak, director of Ford Performance. We wouldnt be doing that if we werent getting a return on our investment.Stewart-Haas Racing will field Fords next season, ending an eight-year run with Chevrolet.Weve been so proud of what weve accomplished, not to mention an incredible run with Tony Stewart, said Jim Campbell, VP of performance vehicles and motorsports for GM.BYE BYE, BOWYERClint Bowyer finishes the worst season of his 11-year career in his lone season at HScott Motorsports.Bowyer drove a stop-gap season at HSM before he takes Stewarts ride in the 14 in 2017. Bowyer had vowed to reshape to team and leave it as winning organization. Bowyer failed to post a top-finish for the first time and trudges into the finale 27th in the standings.Homestead also could mark the final race for HSM, which fielded cars for Bowyer and Michael Annett this season. Annett failed to record a top 10, is 36th in the standings and has been shifted to the second-tier Xfinity Series for 2017.Without a driver, team owner Harry Scott could shutter HSM and sell its charter.Harry is considering a number of options for 2017. He has not made a final decision yet but will do so in the coming weeks, the team said Saturday.OUTTA HEREBrian Scott makes the final start of his 52-race career following his retirement announcement. Team owner Richard Petty said he was still looking for a driver in the No. 44 Ford next season. ... Tommy Baldwin Racing sold its charter this week and faces an uncertain future. The primary misgiving among players has been about having to conform to the Islamic dress code and wear a hijab (headscarf).I fully support US chess champ Nazi Paikidze in her protest against FIDE hosting a womens event in Iran, Kasparov tweeted. In another tweet, he said: I hope the worlds chess players, women and men, find the courage to protest FIDEs decision. Womens rights are human rights.Last month, the FIDE Congress in Baku chose Iran as the host country for the 2017 Womens World Chess Championship. It said no other country had bid to stage the event.Paikidze has said she will neither wear the hijab nor participate in the tournament unless conditions are normal. Two years ago he ran for FIDE presidents job but lost to incumbent Kirsan Ilyumzhinov. In October 2015 the Ethics Commission of the body held him guilty of breaching the FIDE Code of Ethics over his conduct during the presidential elections. It then banned him from holding any official FIDE position or attending its meetings for two years.Dismissing the allegations against him, Kasparov had said that being accused of corruption by Ilyumzhinov is like being accused of foreign aggression by [Russian president Vladimir] Putin. After a wild Saturday filled with big upsets, the ripple effect in the College Football Playoff continued Thursday night, when No. 5 Louisville was thoroughly outplayed by Houston in a 36-10 loss, sending reverberations throughout the selection committees entire Top 25.The ACC took a direct hit, as No. 4 Clemson now stands as its lone CFP contender, but that was just the start. It impacted the Big Ten, which solidified its position as the conference with the best chance to get two teams into the top four.It impacted the Big 12, which takes another breath of hope each time there is an upset in the top 10.It impacted the Pac-12, where one-loss Washington no longer has to worry about passing the eye test against a Louisville team that was ranked ahead of the Huskies before suffering its second loss of the season. It impacted the Group of 5, as Houston should now be ranked after beating two top-10 teams (Oklahoma and Louisville) but is still unlikely to win its division, let alone the American Conference.Thats whats so fascinating about this playoff system. Rarely is a loss by a contender confined to the box score of those two teams. The immediate and most obvious repercussion from Thursday night, of course, is that Louisvilles playoff hopes are likely over. The Cardinals didnt look anywhere near a top-four team, and couldnt overcome their fourth slow start of the season. Louisville was fortunate to beat Duke, Virginia and Wake Forest in spite of pedestrian performances, but in this case, Houston was simply the better team.So all eyes turn to Clemson, where the pressure to win out is immense -- not just on the road against an improved Wake Forest team, but also against rival South Carolina. If Clemson wins at Wake Forest on Saturday, the Tigers will clinch the ACCs Atlantic Division. If they dont, Louisville will win the division and play in the ACC title game -- against a Coastal Division opponent that probably will be unranked. In that scenario, the committee could possibly be comparing the résumés of two-loss conference champions from three leagues: the Big Ten (Penn State or Wisconsin), the ACC (Louisville) and the Big 12 (Oklahoma). The best-case scenario for the ACC would be for Clemson to beat Wake Forest and South Carolina, then win the conference title, leaving no doubt its a top-four conference champion. One thing we know for sure: Clemson and Louisville arent getting in now.The Big Ten is the only conference with any legitimate hope of two playoff teams, but thats assuming that Ohio State wins out but doesnt win its division. Fans have to remember that winning a conference title is one of the tiebreakers the committee uses to rank teams with comparable résumés. If it comes down to Ohio State or Penn State, and the Nittany Lions win the Big Ten title, the Buckeyes would have two strikes against them in the committees protocol.Assuming Alabama, Clemson and the Big Ten champion are all in the final top four, the Buckeyes would then be compared with the Pac-12 champ and Big 12 champ, and theyd probably need some help to unseat one of them (unless Wisconsin wins the Big Ten and the committee values Ohio States head-to-head win above the Badgers league title, which would be an entirely different debate). The one thing Ohio State doesnt have to worry about?Louisville. The same can be said for the Pac-12, whose top contender, No. 6 Washington, dropped behind Louisville in the latest ranking after the Huskies lost to USC. Washingtons strength of schedule has been called into question by the committee, and its loss to USC opened the door to debate whether a one-loss Louisville team could trump a one-loss Pac-12 champion with the worst nonconference schedule in the country. Not anymore. Now Washington should be the committees top bubble team at No. 5, barring any upsets in Week 12.That means the Big 12 still needs all the help it can get for No. 9 Oklahoma or No. 14 West Virginia to finish in the top four, but Houstons win had a direct impact on Oklahomas résumé because the Sooners lost to Houston in the season opener. It would help the Sooners résumé if the selection committee ranked Houston because then their only two losses of the season would be to CFP Top 25 teams (Houston and Ohio State).Houston should be ranked this week after beating two of the committees top 10 teams (No. 9 OU and No. 5 Louisville), but it needs Navy to lose its final two regular-season conference games -- at East Carolina and at SMU -- just to win its division. Its an unlikely scenario, as ESPNs Football Power Index gives the Midshipmen at least a 60 percent chance to win each game. Plus, Houston would have to overcome Boise State and undefeated Western Michigan, teams that could both still win their respective leagues.Remember, its the highest-ranked Group of 5 conference champion that earns a New Years Six bowl bid, not just the highest-ranked team.Houston is a different team when its healthy, especially on defense. Louisville had three turnovers and 15 penalties on a night when it had the committees attention. We blew it, Louisville coach Bobby Petrino said. And everyone else in the Top 25 noticed. AUSTIN, Texas -- With the promise of blue skies and some sizzling pop from Taylor Swift, the U.S. Grand Prix is back after all those worries about its demise.Theres even a gripping title chase on the track, too.The future of the race at the Circuit of the Americas was in question for months after the 2015 version was swamped by torrential rains that chased away crowds and nearly cost Formula One the entire weekend. The weather cleared just long enough for Lewis Hamilton to win in a wild finish and claim his third championship.Within days, race promoters warned they had taken a devastating financial hit and there were fears that the lone F1 race in the U.S. would move elsewhere.Yet here it is, and F1 is ready to ready to run in America for a fifth consecutive year, an important milestone for the series long-term survival in a nation where NASCAR remains king to motorsports fans. The race is on, said former Formula One champion Mario Andretti. This event is established and thats very important, and very good. After last years struggles saw fans slogging through ankle-deep mud, race organizers knew they needed some punch year to bring them back. The U.S. Grand Prix has seen declining attendance every year since its debut and saw a chunk of fans leeched away by the 2015 debut of the Mexican Grand Prix, which runs the week after the Austin race.Circuit of the Americas President Bobby Epstein, who admits the race was in great jeopardy in early 2016, reached for a pop star and got one of biggest when Swift signed on for a Saturday night show at the track after qualifying. A three-day general admission ticket gains entry to the racing, the Swift concert and a Sunday night post-race concert with Usher and The Roots. Its a move Epstein hopes will boost race weekend attendance, and be a window into Formula One for a new generation of fans who may not know much about racing. Last year, Elton John played the Sunday night after the race. If fans of Swift, Usher and The Roots decide to watch the race, everyone wins, Epstein said. Its a formula that will be closely watched by Formula Ones new ownership group, U.S.-based Liberty Media, which announced last month it would buy the series for $4.4 billion .What I hope to do with this is make an investment in the future of Formula One and bring out and audiience that has never experienced an F1 event, which is more than a race, Epstein said.dddddddddddd With Taylor Swift, it crosses into another, younger demographic. We think there will be 30,000-40,000 people who might not otherwise have come.A Swift spokeswoman declined comment.Epstein also threw in a weather guarantee for race weekend. Reserve seat tickets get a 105 percent refund if more than two inches of rain fall on race weekend. Forecasts predict rain Thursday and clear skies once practice starts Friday and through the weekend. On the track, Nico Rosberg has pushed Hamilton -- his Mercedes teammate and rival -- to the brink of desperation with a 33-point lead heading into the final four races. Hamilton won season titles in 2014 and 2015 but now faces a must-win scenario if he hopes to catch Rosberg over the final month of 2016.Hamilton wiped out a big deficit earlier in the season but Rosberg has been on a roll with four victories in the last five races. Hamilton has been exceptional in Austin, winning three times, including the last two when he passed Rosberg late both times.Ill be holding nothing back out there. First up, were back in the States, which is like a second home race for me these days. I love the country, the culture, the people and the track, Hamilton said.Hamilton has appeared to struggle with the prospect of losing the title this year. He was criticized for playing around with Snapchat on his phone during the official drivers news conference in Japan two weeks ago, then protested what he considered disrespectful media coverage by not speaking with reporters at the Mercedes briefing after qualifying.Rosberg, who cracked under the pressure of chasing Hamilton the previous two seasons, has been cool all year. He dominated the early part of the season and roared out of a slump after Hamilton surged to catch him.A year ago in Austin, Rosberg infamously threw a podium cap in Hamiltons face after Hamilton clinched the season title with the victory on the rain-slicked course.Last year this race obviously didnt work out so great for me, so I m looking forward to getting back out there and doing my best to get it right this time, Rosberg said. The troubled NRL career of Brisbane flyer James Roberts is in jeopardy with reports he was involved in a drunken incident on the weekend. The NRL integrity unit was advised by the Broncos on Tuesday of an alleged incident at a Brisbane hotel on Sunday. An NRL spokesman told AAP the Broncos will now investigate the matter and report back to the integrity unit. Its reported Roberts became abusive when refused service at the Normanby Hotel just outside Brisbanes CBD.The Courier-Mail claims Roberts was placed in a headlock by bouncers after an altercation with a female staff member and then lost consciousness. An ambulance was called, the newspaper claims, but Roberts was awake again by the time it arrived and refused treatment.Roberts has a history of off-field indiscretions, having been sacked by Penrith and South Sydney over behaviour-related issues. The Rabbitohs released Roberts in 2011 after breaches of his playing contract including smashing a taxi window and he was cut by the Panthers in March 2014 for off-field misbehaviour. He was thrown a lifeline by Gold Coast later in 2014 and appeared to have turned his career around, becoming one of the Titans best players before a bungled contract resulted in him leaving to join Brisbane for the 2016 campaign. The Broncos have made no comment on the incident and its unclear if Roberts will be available for Thursdays clash with fourth-placed Canterbury at Suncorp Stadium. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, we pose a question to a rotating panel of ESPN fantasy basketball experts to gauge their thoughts on a hot topic. Todays contributors are ESPN Fantasys Joe Kaiser and Kyle Soppe and ESPN NBA Insider Kevin Pelton.14 games into the nascent NBA careers of Dario Saric and Jamal Murray, each has shown promise for fantasy teams. Saric has scored in double digits in five of his past six games and is averaging 9.9 PPG, 6.2 RPG, 1.8 APG and 1.3 3-PPG. Meanwhile, Murray racked up 24 points on the Bulls on Tuesday night and is averaging 9.0 PPG, 2.3 RPG, 2.1 APG and 1.6 3-PPG.Do you think each will be a viable fantasy option the rest of the season? Do you prefer one over the other?Joe Kaiser: Consistency worries me for any rookie, and I think ultimately these are two players who are better suited to be fantasy contributors next season than this one, but here are the things to look at:1) Are they getting consistent minutes? 2) Do they have a good usage rate of at least 15? 3) Are they shooting at least somewhat efficiently?Entering Wednesday, Saric is playing 26 minutes a game (check!) with a usage rate of 19.3 (check!), but hes shooting just 39.9 percent, and thats a real anchor at a forward position. Additionally, Sarics minutes will dwindle in the months ahead, once Nerlens Noel and Ben Simmons return to the court. As for Murray, he is playing 20.3 minutes a game (check!) with a usage of 19.9 (check!), but like Saric, the problem is efficiency; the former Kentucky star is shooting just 40.9 percent with a below-average PER of 12.47 and will likely see less time as Will Barton gets back to full speeed and Gary Harris returns to the lineup.ddddddddddddKyle Soppe: Both are interesting options in somewhat deeper formats, and I think what weve seen thus far is kind of what we can expect. Both players have the ability to score, but youre going to have to deal with plenty of poor games if you want to reap the occasional reward. I view Saric as the better to own this season, as his rebounding raises his floor enough for him to fall into fantasy value on a poor scoring night.Murrays value is more tied to scoring, and while I think he can already do that at an NBA level (just ask the Bulls), I worry that his skill set will remain somewhat limited for the Nuggets this season. Murrays nightly ceiling is probably higher, and if I have to roll the dice on either in DFS, itd be Murray, but if youre asking me at the end of the year, who has the more fantasy-friendly stat line, Ill take Super Dario in a close one.Kevin Pelton: For this season, Id say Saric has a better chance of being a viable fantasy option. Given the injuries the Nuggets have had at shooting guard (most notably Harris, a starter when healthy), this is probably about as many minutes as Murray is going to play, unless he proves capable of backing up Emmanuel Mudiay at point guard or Denver has an injury at that position.Saric, too, is close to his peak value at this point, but Simmons isnt due back to compete with him for playing time for more than a month, so I think this kind of production is what can be expected for him for some time now. Goalie Roberto Luongo, getting the call in place of Game 1 starter Carey Price, was solid when needed in making 23 saves for the shutout. It has been an odd season at Kent CCC. They could not make it past the group stages in the competition they were tipped to fare best in, the T20 Blast, but are right in the mix for promotion to Division One in the County Championship, and are preparing for a home quarter-final - against Yorkshire on Thursday - in the Royal London Cup.Equally, their players continue to reach for higher honours and the areas deep well of talent shows no signs of drying: Sam Billings has been to the IPL and with England, while Daniel Bell-Drummond shone for the Lions. And yet, theres been a quiet but constant state of turbulence at Canterbury. On April 18, Kent legend Robert Key returned from India, having taken to broadcasting like a duck to water during the World T20, and decided the hunger to reach 60 first-class centuries had dipped. The 54 he had, a bit of telly and a bucketload of golf would do just fine. His team-mates were shocked, and the beating heart of the dressing room and 18 seasons of experience (nine as captain) were gone, taking a roomful of laughs with it.Then, on May 23, Kents high performance director (and former wicketkeeper), Simon Willis, left to take up a similar role with Sri Lanka, under former Kent coach Graham Ford. Willis, as director of Kents newly-formed academy from 2003, had overseen the development of a charmingly homespun young squad, and six internationals. Off went another lynchpin. To top things off, on June 27, bowler Matt Coles behaviour during a trip to Cardiff was investigated by the club. He would not play for a month as he - not for the first time - addressed his relationship with alcohol. Were the first and third events linked? Certainly Key had been Coles mentor, and the man known for keeping him in check. At the eye of the storm sits Sam Northeast, Kents new captain, top run-scorer and full-time busybody. Batsman Joe Denly describes Northeast as first in the nets, last to leave. Sams always trying to be better. When arranging this interview, there are three delays. First, because Northeast is in a selection meeting; then hes travelling to Hampshire to watch Kents second team; finally hes looking at his squads contract situation for next season. Only James Vince is a younger county captain - Northeast is 26 - but few can be more hands-on.Such is life at a club like Kent, where the resources are stretched and the staff small. We dont… he says, pausing, have the luxury of millions of backroom staff and scouts and whatever. Its a big effort from a small group of people, we pull together and from the academy, the youth structure, everyone. There can be benefits to this - everyone knows each other, its a family environment, and that helps. We have to put in a big shift. All of us.Northeast is as Kentish as Key; its where he grew up and his name is one that has been whispered since he scored 19 hundreds in a term at Wellesley House prep school aged 13. He played plenty for England Under-19, and his success leading Kents limited-overs sides last season meant his elevation to the top job, in time, seemed a given.Im learning on the job, just like anyone else. I took a lot from Keysy, both tactically and in work ethic. He was a great mentor, as well as having a pretty serious cricket brain, and all those runs. He pretty much ran Kent cricket for all those years…Its been very different not having him around, for all of us. People look to you for inspiration and leadership because he did that for so long, and maybe we took that for granted. I only noticed when I stepped into the role how much of a big hole was left when he moved on.What of those tough patches? Its been an interesting season, certainly, he says, whilst swiftly citing the support of senior players like Denly, Darren Stevens and James Tredwell, plus Billings itinerant experience. Willis, he says, is a huge loss - not just a vital, visible cog at the club, with his pawprints all over the squad, but a key player in Northeeasts own development as a hands-off coach who never imposed himself on his charges.ddddddddddddDenly has been mighty impressed. He hasnt let the pressure of captaincy bother his batting, and his on-field persona is very calm. He can be a bit fiery when he gets out, but who isnt? Hes dealt with distractions well, and he has good people around him with lots of experience, and the powers that be at Kent are in pretty good shape.Despite their losses, Kent are in pretty good shape. Last year they earned headlines for not being able to afford an overseas player, but this year - one way or another - Tom Latham and Kagiso Rabada were recruited. Denly has signed a new deal and Northeast is confident they will not lose young stars and can, in Willis absence, with Min Patel at the helm, continue to produce talent. For the first team, starting against Yorkshire, it is business time. We go in as underdogs, says Northeast. The pressure isnt on us, they will have all the internationals which is great. It would be awesome to get a sellout, the club deserves a big day like this, and hopefully we get out on top. We are up there in Division Two because we have been pretty solid all season, but I think we are well suited - especially the bowlers, Treddy, Stevo - to 50-over stuff. But every game is massive now. Were young, so inconsistent, but are learning fast. Northeasts own form - not least 995 Championship runs, including four massive hundreds (the smallest being 166) - has been a vital factor in Kents rise. After some mixed seasons opening, he is settled in the middle order, and knows his game: I have found a spot where I like to bat, especially with the captaincy, after however long in the field, its quite nice to have that little period where you dont have to strap the pads on. I have a lot of sympathy for Alastair Cook when he does it. Thats pretty extraordinary. I look back and cant believe I ever opened. Its mad.He uses former Kent team-mate Martin van Jaarsveld as inspiration because he was a guy who just never settled and never stopped trying to improve. Ahead of the 2015 season, he and Willis worked on making him a more adaptable batsman, particularly in the shorter forms, so he did not just hit to cow corner. The results were instant, as only two players scored more T20 Blast runs than him, and his century famously trumped Chris Gayles as Kent won a thriller in Taunton.Another run glut, this time against red balls, has flowed lately. Across my career, Im a guy who tends to make the most of my form. Ive felt great recently, and when you feel a millions dollars its key to capitalise. Unfortunately Ive been stuck in the nervous 190s lately. Those big centuries have caught the eye, and Northeast is unashamedly ambitious, making no bones about being desperate for England recognition, having - surprisingly - never even made a Lions squad. He is aware, too, that playing in Division Two naturally does hold you back in peoples perceptions, and there is a gap. In the past, particularly in 2013, there were questions about whether he might leave, but he has remained loyal, even as the more eye-catching - but no less effective - talents of Billings and Bell-Drummond have created more headlines. So is he - as captain of a promising squad, building something (and sometimes holding things together), at his home club, his team - left in a quandary? At the moment, I wouldnt leave to further my England case, no, he says. But can you ever say never? My heart is very much in Kent cricket and wanting to achieve something here. I want to play for England through Kent, and I want to get Kent into Division One and back up there as a force, one of the leading counties in England. Its been an ambition of mine to captain Kent and take the club as far as possible. Im very lucky. So, you sense, are Kent. ' ' '

SAN DIEGO -- Major League Baseball is telling managers to cool it on arguing balls and strikes, and warning them not to rely on replay help to bolster their beefs.MLB executive Joe Torre sent a memo Friday to managers, general managers and assistant general managers that said: This highly inappropriate conduct is detrimental to the game and must stop immediately. The memo was obtained Saturday by The Associated Press.Although disagreements over ball and strike calls are natural, the prevalence of manager ejections simply cannot continue, Torre wrote. This conduct not only delays the game, but it also has the propensity to undermine the integrity of the umpires on the field.Torre, a Hall of Fame manager and former NL MVP, said skippers are increasingly relying on technology from the clubhouse or video room to argue from the dugout. Every pitch and play is monitored by teams in case they want to challenge for a replay review. He called that an express violation of the Replay Regulations, which state that `on-field personnel in the dugout may not discuss any issue with individuals in their video review room using the dugout phone other than whether to challenge a play subject to video replay review.Detroit manager Brad Ausmus was ejected for arguing balls and strikes and covered home plate with a sweat shirt earlier this season, and Boston manager John Farrell was tossed during an animated dispute alongside Red Sox slugger David Ortiz.Earlier this month, Cubs manager Joe Maddon was ejected while arguing from the dugout. And as recently as Friday night, Oakland manager Bob Melvin and San Francisco skipper Bruce Bochy got tossed for arguing balls and strikes along with players on their respective teams.Torre concluded by advising that any manager or coach ejected for arguing balls and strikes hereafter will be disciplined, including at least a fine.---Follow Bernie Wilson on Twitter at http://twitter.com/berniewilson Cheap Air Max 2018 . My 7-year-old doesnt aspire to play in the NFL or NBA or NHL; he wants to be a ninja warrior.Raptly watching Monday nights season finale of American Ninja Warrior on NBC, he pleaded for an extension to his bedtime so he could watch it all the way through. My second-grader plays a number of sports -- soccer, basketball, flag football -- but given the option at recess, he would rather fling himself across the playground bars specifically to hone his ninja skills than play foursquare or anything else. For his upcoming 8th birthday, all he wants is a backyard pull-up bar contraption to work on his grip strength, the north-star physical quality for would-be ninja warriors -- like 40 time for a football player, velocity for a promising pitcher or length for NBA prospects. He obsessively follows his favorite ninjas: No different than his geography-infused love of other teams and athletes based in DC, his favorite is sports-TV cameraman Geoff Britten of suburban Maryland, who last season became the first official American Ninja Warrior. But he also loves Joe The Weatherman Moravsky (an actual meteorologist), Drew The Real Ninja Dreschel and this seasons breakout sensation, stuntwoman Jessi Graff, who got further in ANW than any other woman competitor. My kid is hardly alone. Throughout school, kids enthusiastically discuss the show and universally respect the sport. When I post photos or videos of him at a local ninja gym, I typically get multiple follow-ups from parents: Where is that? Do they have kids classes? Why do kids gravitate toward this activity? I think it is mainly three factors:Simplicity: Climbing, hanging, sliding, jumping -- these are basic physical moves virtually any kid can do. It appeals to a raw primal instinct for moving, adapting and surviving, Chris Wilczewski said. He is an American Ninja Warrior 2016 national finalist, owner of Movement Lab in New Jersey and founder of the nascent National Ninja League. It mimics movements found on playgrounds.Accessibility: Drawing inspiration from its philosophical partner, parkour, kids doing ninja workouts require very little beyond the physical space around them. Any equipment found at a school playground or neighborhood park can work, but I have also learned to refrain from auto-scolding my kids when they hop on (and off) a random sidewalk bench or propel themselves under (or over) railings. Other sports depend heavily on mastering different pieces of equipment, Wilczewski said. Ninja Warrior relies so heavilyy on utilizing ones own body.ddddddddddddA note on safety: Like any parent, I often cringe when my kid climbs on the playground equipment -- or plays any sport where there might be contact, either with people or objects. As with every activity, being taught proper techniques when appropriate and proceeding with a commensurate level of caution are paramount to the experience.)As much as anything, the competitors are normal-sized (although as in the case of Britten, they often have Popeye-sized forearms); the kids can see themselves in the pro ninjas far more easily than they can in the goliath athletes of traditional pro sports. Also, the sport is still small enough that you can still connect with top competitors on social media. Britten liked a Twitter video of my son doing a youth-sized rings obstacle, and the kid was thrilled.Fun: Even when you watch the elite level on TV, the competitors are cheering each other on and marveling at new displays of technique or fitness. Kids are naturally competitive, but the obstacles are challenging enough that personal best is largely the standard. Kids can push themselves without pushing others around, and playground credibility is earned just as much by designing a challenging new obstacle pattern as it is from successfully navigating it.When ninja competitors on TV fail -- and virtually everyone inevitably fails -- they smile and appreciate the process, rather than focus on the outcome. Plus, the pop-culture phenomenon of Ninja Warrior has put just enough structure around the sport to legitimize it for kids while still encouraging free play.I always imagined my first travel sports experience as a parent would be to some far-flung AAU basketball tournament. A month from now, I will be driving my 7-year-old two hours away to a Pennsylvania gym for an 8-and-under regional competition for the National Ninja League. I couldnt be more thrilled that he has found a sport he loves, but for the moment, I am equally happy to lean on the advice that Wilczewski had for any parent whose kids are similarly ninja-obsessed but cant necessarily truck to some obstacle-course warehouse or regional competition: Just take them to the playground.Dan Shanoff writes about parenting for espnW. You can connect with him on Twitter at @danshanoff or follow the youth-sports journey of his kids on Instagram at @danshanoff. ' ' '

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Moments after raising the banner for their second consecutive Big Ten championship, the No. 6 Maryland Terrapins flexed their muscles as the favorites for another title.Freshman Destiny Slocum scored 15 points, Shatori Walker-Kimbrough had 14 points and Maryland breezed by UMass-Lowell 100-44 in its opener Sunday. The Terrapins entered the season with the nations top recruiting class, a group that shined in its debut. Freshman Kaila Charles started alongside Slocum and finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds in 21 minutes. We talked about in pregame what kind of work had to go into unveiling that banner, Maryland coach Brenda Frese said. I know in our locker room we have even bigger goals of how we want to finish this season.Brianna Fraser had 14 points and Ieshia Small scored 12 for Maryland, which outrebounded UMass-Lowell 52-30. The Terrapins scored 48 points off 34 UMass-Lowell turnovers.Maryland, which finished 31-4 last season, was in sync from the opening tip and started the game on a 17-3 run. Walker-Kimbrough led the way with six points over that stretch. We wanted to come out and set the tone early, Walker-Kimbrough said. One of goals today was just to play Maryland basketball: defend, rebound and run. I thought we did a good job early speeding them up, but we have to make sure we sustain that for 40 minutes. The Terrapins remained dominant at both ends of the court and continued to pull away from the outmatched River Hawks. The Terps had 11 steals over an 11-minute span in the first half.Maryland was 23 of 38 (60.5 percent) from the field and led 57-16 at the break. The Terrapins were just as dominant in the second half, and a jumper by Small increased the margin to 89-32 with 7:45 left in the game. Its a good test, River Hawks coach Jenerrie Harris said about playing Maryland. Its nice to be able to go against one of the best teams in the country. Maybe where we cant make each other pay in practice, that can make us pay in a situation like this so that we can make the improvement for later in the season.Nicole Hayner led UMass-Lowell (0-2) with 17 points.BIG PICTUREUMass-Lowell: The River Hawks are looking to improve from last season, when they went 4-24 overall and 1-15 in the America East. UMass-Lowell is expected to get a boost from freshmen Megan Hendrick and Tyshay Britten, both of whom are pushing for spots in the starting lineup.Maryland: The Terrapins are poised for another big season, with one of the best front courts in the nation and a deep bench. Maryland is expected to contend for a second national championship under Frese.DEEP BENCHMaryland has talent up and down its roster and got points from 12 players in the opener. The Terrapins bench outscored UMass-Lowell 50-15. No player on Maryland played more than 25 minutes. We have a lot more speed this year and depth, Frese said. We definitely want to be able to change up and give a lot of different looks on the defensive end.BETTER PROTECTIONAfter committing 34 turnovers in the first half, UMass-Lowell did a much better job protecting the ball after the break. The River Hawks turned the ball over just four times in the third quarter.UP NEXTUMass-Lowell: The River Hawks open at home against Fairfield on Thursday.Maryland: The Terrapins play their second of three consecutive home games against Maryland-Eastern Shore on Wednesday. But they have been challenged enough by England - more than by recent visitors - over the first two Tests to suggest they cant afford a slip.In the past, a trip north to Mohali may have brought the encouragement of some extra assistance for the quicks, but that was not the pattern last year against South Africa and, judging by the look of the pitch this time, the pacemen will not be leaping out of bed in the morning. There are five members of the England squad, including captain Alastair Cook, who will have fond memories of fighting back from 1-0 down on the 2012-13 tour but as Nick Compton, another member of that side recalled, that was a team chock full of experience. For this England to emulate that comeback would be astonishing, but it is not impossible. As has been the theme throughout the Bangladesh tour, and now India, England will tinker with their XI but, fundamentally, they will need runs from Cook and Joe Root if they are to compete. The middle order is strong - the development of Ben Stokes and Jonny Bairstow continues to impress - but it is mighty difficult if you fall behind. With that in mind, England have to be able to stay in the contest should India put a big first-innings score on the board. They played some impressive cricket on days three and four in Vizag, but the game was lost during the final session of the second day when they slipped to 80 for 5.There was an understandable air of confidence from Virat Kohli as he spoke after the second Test: it was a solid performance and he contributed 248 runs with batting on a different level to anything else seen in the contest. His opening-day century was the first time in 13 innings against England that he had passed fifty and with R Ashwin claiming his first five-wicket haul against them, they were two significant boxes ticked by Indias match-winners. For England to fight back, they will have to keep both quiet in Mohali, which is easier said than done.Form guide(completed matches, most recent first) India WDWWW England LDLWLIn the spotlightHe has played only one first-class match in more than 12 months, but now Jos Buttler is set to be given the task of providing an x-factor to Englands middle order. Trevor Bayliss has lauded Buttlers qualities over the last six months and the feeling is if he had his own way the recall may have come sooner, but now Ben Ducketts struggles and Gary Ballances travails in Bangladesh have left England nowhere else to look to refresh the batting. Buttler has been told to play his natural game, which means, one way or the other, his time at the crease is unlikely to be dull.ddddddddddddIt was only three Tests ago that Ajinkya Rahane scored 188 against New Zealand, so he has plenty of credit in the bank - and the small matter of a Test average of 48.34 - but he has had a difficult start to this series. Two ugly dismissals against spin in Rajkot and a couple of tentative prods in Vizag cost him his wicket. With just five specialist batsmen, India cant afford an over-reliance on Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara.Team newsThere is one confirmed change for India with Parthiv Patel - whose last Test came eight years ago - replacing the injured Wriddhiman Saha as wicketkeeper.India (likely) 1 KL Rahul, 2 M Vijay, 3 Cheteshwar Pujara, 4 Virat Kohli (capt), 5 Ajinkya Rahane, 6 R Ashwin, 7 Parthiv Patel (wk), 8 Ravindra Jadeja, 9 Jayant Yadav, 10 Umesh Yadav, 11 Mohammad ShamiEngland will make three changes through a mixture of form and fitness issues. Buttlers recall in place of Ben Duckett, and Chris Woakes return for the injured Stuart Broad are confirmed. Gareth Batty is expected to replace Surrey team-mate Zafar Ansari, who is unavailable. There is an argument that England should go with their strength and play four quicks, but that does not appear to be their thinking.England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Haseeb Hameed, 3 Joe Root, 4 Moeen Ali, 5 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jos Buttler, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Adil Rashid, 10 Gareth Batty, 11 James AndersonPitch and conditionsThe pitch was dry and shaved. It did not look an extreme surface but there was nothing there to encourage seamers. It is also expected to be slow. Winter is arriving in the north of India and the weather is pleasantly cool, which means the pitch wont bake much.Stats and triviaMoeen Ali needs five wickets to reach 100 in TestsIndia have not lost in Mohali since 1994, against West Indies, in the grounds first Test. Since then they have six wins and five drawsVirat Kohli needs 109 runs for 4000 in Tests; Alastair Cook needs 105 for 11,000Englands collapse from 75 without loss to 158 all out was their second worst for all ten wickets against IndiaQuotesTo me, back in 2014, every bowler looked difficult because I wasnt in a good mindset. But when you are playing well, when you are in a good zone, you feel that you have an upper hand against any bowler that you play and thats something that you need to carry onto the field as well. Virat Kohli on his golden formHes right up there with the best short-form players in the world and hes earned an opportunity to come and play here. who began the night tied for the NL lead in RBIs

PITTSBURGH -- It was hard to tell whether the Pittsburgh Pirates were heading on a road trip or getting ready for a Stanley Cup playoff game after beating the Chicago Cubs 4-2 on Thursday for their fourth straight win. All of the Pirates players and coaches wore Pittsburgh Penguins replica jerseys as they got ready to embark on a road trip to Milwaukee and Detroit. The Penguins even sent a custom-made No. 13 sweater to manager Clint Hurdle. The Penguins lead the Ottawa Senators 3-1 in their best-of-seven Eastern Conference semifinal. "Theres nothing much like playoff hockey," Hurdle said. "Were just getting into the spirit." Utility infielder Brandon Inge took things one step farther before the game, arriving in the Pirates clubhouse dressed in a full hockey uniform and rollerblades. "Its something fun, something to change things up a little bit during a long season. Plus, weve got to support our boys," said Pirates second baseman Neil Walker, a Pittsburgh-area native. The Pirates won for the 11th time in 13 games as Andrew McCutchen had three hits and two RBIs. Leadoff hitter Starling Marte singled and scored in each of the first two innings as Pittsburgh built an early 4-0 lead. The Pirates moved a season-best 11 games over .500. "Were playing good baseball and I dont think weve reached our ceiling yet," McCutchen said. "The pitching has been good all year but the hitting has kind of been up and down. The bats are eventually going to come around and we should be even better when that happens." The Cubs lost their fourth in a row. Edwin Jackson (1-7) gave up two runs in the first inning and two more in the second. He gave up six hits and struck out six in three innings and has a 6.11 ERA through 10 starts. "I got beat with men on base with balls up in the zone," Jackson said. "I had some times when I got it down but in vital situations when I needed to keep the ball down I wasnt doing that, and that pretty much sums up the game." Jackson is in his first season with the Cubs after signing a four-year, $52 million contract over the winter as a free agent. "I think at times he tries too hard to justify his contract and overthrows," Chicago manager Dale Sveum said. "I think he needs to relax and just be Edwin Jackson, the guy we liked enough to sign." Reliever Vin Mazzaro (3-0) pitched 2 1-3 scoreless innings. He replaced starter Jeanmar Gomez in the fourth inning following a rain delay of 1 hour, 47 minutes. "I knew about a half-hour before the delay ended that I was going to come in to pitch, but you never know how the long the delay might last, so I tried to stay as prepared as possible," Mazzaro said. "I felt like I was ready to go." Gomez allowed one run and three hits in 3 2-3 innings. "I thought I had really good stuff today and control of all my pitches," Gomez said. "Then it started raining hard and that was it. I think I could have pitched a lot longer but Im frustrated about it. You cant do anything about the rain." Jason Grilli pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning and is a perfect 19-for-19 in save opportunities. Marte led off the bottom of the first inning with a single, stole second with one out and scored on McCutchens single. McCutchen stole second and scored on Michael McKenrys single. Marte singled in the second and scored on Travis Sniders triple that rolled to the 410-foot notch in left-centre field. McCutchen added his second RBI single. The Cubs got a run in the fourth when David DeJesus led off with a double and scored on Anthony Rizzos grounder. The Cubs had runners on the corners when two outs when play was halted, but Mazzaro got Welington Castillo to hit an inning-ending groundout after the delay. Chicago cut the deficit to 4-2 in the seventh with Darwin Barney singling in Castillo, who had walked. NOTES: Jackson was struck in the rear end by a line drive off the bat of Marte in the second inning. Castro jammed his right ankle while being thrown out trying to stretch a single into a double in the sixth inning by RF Travis Snider. Both Chicago players were able to stay in the game. ... The Cubs road trip continues Friday night at Cincinnati with RHP Scott Feldman (4-3, 2.19) facing Reds RHP Bronson Arroyo (4-4, 3.28). ... RHP A.J. Burnett (3-4, 2.57) is scheduled to start for Pittsburgh at Milwaukee against RHP Marco Estrada (3-2, 5.44). Cheap Yeezy 350 v2 Womens . After opening with rounds of 66 and 73 to make the cut by a stroke, he had 11 birdies in the bogey-free round. MIAMI -- One pitch from being pulled, and one strike from victory, Homer Bailey unleashed a 97 mph fastball to finish off the Marlins. With his 125th pitch -- a career high -- Bailey completed a six-hitter and helped the Cincinnati Reds extend their winning streak to four games by beating Miami 6-2 Tuesday night. Bailey went to a full count on the final batter, Greg Dobbs, and wouldnt have faced another, manager Dusty Baker said. "We were counting pitches in the ninth inning," Baker said. "We were like, Come on, Homer. Quit fouling them off, Dobbs." Dobbs finally lined out weakly, and Bailey earned his first victory since April 5. The Reds climbed a season-best seven games above .500 as they began a nine-game trip. The Marlins, who have the NLs worst record, lost their third game in a row and fell to 5-12 at home. Bailey (2-3) tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and walked none in his fourth complete game. He was glad to give the Reds relievers a break. "Theyve been griping at me," he said. "The last couple of games I only went five or six. Its about time I gave them a day off." The right-hander has endured spotty run support this season, but the Reds scored five times in the second inning to go ahead 6-1. "With that kind of lead I was just trying to be really aggressive," Bailey said. He retired his final eight batters and allowed only four hits over the final 8 2-3 innings. "He worked with tremendous control," Miamis Adeiny Hechavarria said. "He located the pitches where he wanted and fooled us several times." A brief, uncharacteristic bout of wildness proved costly for Ricky Nolasco (2-5), who gave up six runs in five innings. He hit a batter with a pitch and walked two -- both with the bases loaded. Xavier Paul hit a three-run double for the Reds. Brandon Phillips, who began the night tied for the NL lead in RBIs, drove in two runs. Joey Votto drove in a run and had three hits to hike his average to .322. Ryan Hanigan added two hits to raise his average to .149. Miami batted rookies Derek Dietrich and Marcell Ozuna third and fourth, but the straategy failed to jump-start an offence ranked last in the majors in runs, batting average and homers.dddddddddddd The Marlins have totalled three runs in Nolascos past three starts. Manager Mike Redmond blamed the feeble attack for Nolascos costly bases on balls. "It kind of stems from our offence, with him going out there he knows he cant give up much," Redmond said. "Hes trying to be perfect; he ends up walking a couple of guys." Cincinnati broke the game open in the second inning, when they scored five times with two outs. Nolasco hit Shin-Soo Choo with a pitch and, after the Reds loaded the bases, walked Votto and Phillips to force in runs. Nolasco then grooved a 3-1 pitch to Paul, who hit a three-run double. "One out away -- frustrating," Nolasco said. "Ive been doing a good job of staying away from that big crooked inning all year but it got me today." A five-run lead was plenty for Bailey. "Homer to me has turned into one of those guys where you could maybe consider him the ace of your staff," Votto said. "He has consistently gotten better over his career, and its really impressive to see him improve and grow." NOTES: With a temperature of 77 degrees at game time, the retractable roof was open for the ninth time this season. It was open only eight times last year. ... Reds OF Chris Heisey, who is on the disabled list, aggravated a strained right hamstring Monday playing for Double-A Pensacola. His projected date to rejoin the team was pushed back to next week. ... Cincinnati LHP Manny Parra, on the DL with a strained left pectoral muscle, began a rehab assignment Monday with Pensacola and threw one scoreless inning. ... The Reds flipped RHP Mat Latos and LHP Tony Cingrani in the rotation to give the latter extra rest as he deals with shoulder soreness. Latos will now start the series finale Thursday, and Cingrani will pitch Friday in Philadelphia. ... Reds RF Jay Bruce, who had played in every game, was given the night off. ... The Marlins began the homestand averaging 18,865 fans per game, which ranked ahead of three other teams: Oakland, Tampa Bay and Cleveland. ' ' '

Mark Jackson asked his players a simple question during Friday

Erstellt 02.11.2019 14:26 von MJL456 02.11.2019 14:26 In der Kategorie Allgemein.

Since turning pro in 2009, Joe Smith Jr. has fought in relative anonymity.A union man and laborer by trade, Smith became a bit of an attraction on small club shows in New York and nearby Long Island, where he is from.Smith could punch a bit; he was fearless, and his local fans turned out to watch him. He had not lost since a fourth-round knockout in his seventh fight in 2010. But other than a 10-round decision victory in December 2015 against Will Rosinsky, who is not that big of a name either, Smiths resume was devoid of a recognizable opponent. But in June, Premier Boxing Champions came calling and made a deal with Star Boxing promoter Joe DeGuardia for Smith to face Polish light heavyweight contender Andrzej Fonfara on NBC in prime time in Fonfaras adopted hometown of Chicago.Fonfara, obviously, was the huge favorite. He had given light heavyweight world champion Adonis Stevenson a life-and-death fight in 2014 in a decision loss but was coming off two significant wins in a row. In April 2015, Fonfara beat up Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and made him quit after the ninth round. Then he outpointed former titleholder Nathan Cleverly in a tremendous slugfest six months later.Smith, 27, was supposed to be nothing more than a showcase/pit stop on Fonfaras way to another title shot. But Smith destroyed Fonfara, knocking him out in the first round in a huge upset.Suddenly, Smith had arrived, and a few months later he was the hand-picked opponent to face the great Bernard Hopkins, the 51-year-old legend who needed a dance partner for what he says will be his final fight.Philadelphias Hopkins (55-7-2, 32 KOs) liked Smiths aggressiveness, the fact that he had a good record and that he was a young, hungry fighter -- but one the future Hall of Famer would be favored to defeat. And so they quickly made a deal -- a very easy one to do, both sides said -- and Hopkins will bow out -- win, lose or draw, he claims -- after their scheduled 12-round fight on Saturday (HBO, 10 p.m. ET/PT) at The Forum in Inglewood, California.Joe Smith, Jr., dares to be great. But this is something thats important to me, to end it my way and go up against not a cream puff, Hopkins said. I could have picked anybody to have went in there, and it would have been a joke, but Im not going to do that to my legacy. I have too much pride as a man, and thats why I chose the most dangerous opponent out there that really nobody wants to jump over and fight. I love the challenge, and Im taking the challenge head-on.The co-feature will pit 24-year-old featherweight up-and-comer Joseph JoJo Diaz (22-0, 13 KOs), a 2012 U.S. Olympian from South El Monte, California, against Horacio Violento Garcia (30-1-1, 22 KOs), 26, of Mexico, in a scheduled 10-rounder.In the opening bout, cruiserweight world titleholder Oleksandr Usyk (10-0, 9 KOs), 29, the 2012 Olympic heavyweight gold medalist for Ukraine, will make his first defense and his American debut against Thabiso The Rock Mchunu (17-2, 11 KOs), 28, of South Africa. The low-key Smith (22-1, 18 KOs), who born in 1989 -- the year after Hopkins turned professional -- is well aware that this fight represents the opportunity of a lifetime. If he wins, its even more career-making than the victory over Fonfara. If he loses, well, he lost to one of the best fighters of all time and will have raised his profile and have made a nice payday in the process. It really is a no-lose situation. Its a privilege to be on this card, Smith said. To take on a legend like Bernard is an opportunity I would have never expected. That said, come fight night, that wont matter because itll just be me and him in the ring. My team and I have been training to take on any of the styles Bernard may bring. Im excited for the night to come, and Im ready to put on a great show.DeGuardia, Smiths longtime promoter, has been nothing but respectful to Hopkins, but said he believes Smith can pull off another upset. He praised Smiths determination and his working-class spirit.I am proud to be associated with this fight. DeGuardia said. Joe Smith Jr. is symbolic of the American spirit. He gets up every morning working that sledgehammer, working with the union. Hes a proud member of the laborers union, Local 66, and hes going to bring over that hard work and dedication into the ring, and I think everybody is going to see a great night of boxing. After Joe Smith Jr. wins this fight, many doors will open, but he has to get through Bernard Hopkins first. Once he does that, every door in the world is his.I know were going to be seeing the final night for Bernard, and its going to be something really fitting, that a legend like Bernard is going to be taking on a young, hungry lion like Joe Smith, Jr. I think Bernard certainly deserves a lot of credit for taking on Joe Smith, and hes really going to be in for I think maybe a little bit of a surprise, the same way Fonfara was when Joe upset him and knocked him out this past June in the first round.Smith said that while he is grateful for the opportunity, he will not be in awe of Hopkins come fight night, nor will he get caught up in the hoopla surrounding his farewell.I just look at the person in front of me and just know that I need to do everything I can to beat that person, whether its a legend or a nobody, Smith said. Theyre there to hurt me and take everything I worked for. Thats how I look at every fight. It doesnt matter who he is. MLB Jerseys China .
