You get back from the Euros in France exhausted, under-exercised and bloated. You have four days at home before a walking holiday in Austria and Switzerland. A team youve played against are short and ask if you can fill in for a T20. You agree, offering the pre-emptive excuse that you are essentially foie gras on legs.It has rained and the outfield is slick. In the first over, the ball is edged above and wide of you at backward point. You chase, fall readily into a slide for the first time since you damaged your shoulder at the end of May, gather the ball smoothly and, as you keep sliding, have the wherewithal to toss the ball to a team-mate. It feels vaguely professional. You are encouraged.By the final over you are stationed on the square-leg boundary. A ball is pulled to deep midwicket. Sprinting to your left, you think you will cut it off, but it skids on the damp grass. At full tilt, you throw yourself into the path of the ball. It skips up, is diverted a fraction squarer. At full length, you reach up your right hand and, just as the ball is bouncing over your torso, knock it down into your chest. Your shoulder sticks in the grass. Your body keeps going. You pivot up on your neck, like Jurgen Klinsmann in the 1990 World Cup final, spend an age with your legs off the ground, then flop to earth, the ball somehow wedged in your unusually paunchy midriff. You have been ungainly and spectacular, and have saved two.You bat too high at four. This is not a team youve ever played for before. You may not play for them again. There is a tremendous sense of freedom. You block your first ball. You flat-bat your second to cover, take a couple of paces, stop, and just as youre about to shout No!, realise to your horror that your partner is charging towards you. You dont even bother diving, but the bowler fumbles the throw and you survive.Youve netted against this bowler in the past. On this pitch, at his limited pace, anything short sits up. You pull to midwicket and run two. The next ball isnt quite as short but youre into position quickly and give it the full Ricky Ponting, wrists rolled, splice skyward. It finds the man on the boundary and you run one. It was the best shot youve hit this year. You are out for six, bowled playing too ambitious a drive to a decent delivery that moved away. But for the first time this year, you had fun playing cricket. You did a couple of good things. You won with an over and a half to spare. You go to Austria and Switzerland. You walk, a lot. You lose some of the tournament belly. You develop pains in your toes that marmot oil only partially relieves. Descending through a wood near Gasteig, you feel something bite the index finger on your right hand. You look down and see an insect, perhaps three-quarters of an inch long. It flies off, leaving a small spot of blood on the knuckle. By the following morning your finger is itchy, bright red and swollen like an overstuffed bratwurst. You wonder whether this may make it easier to turn the ball.If your first (batsmanless) net session after your return is anything to go by, the bite, still an angry yellow volcano, causes you to push it down the leg side even more than usual. The only consolation is that, for no reason you can discern, you are suddenly able to bowl at left-handers. Again and again, coming round the wicket, you are able to pitch the ball on or just outside off stump and see it jag away against the angle of delivery. It is, youre almost certain, because of a kink in the Astro, but youll take anything that makes you look good to the legions of dog-walkers.You tire quickly. Your rotator cuff aches. A month of writing 4000 words a day and eating media-centre baguettes, followed by a fortnight of walking 25km a day with a 30kg pack, it turns out, does not make you fit for cricket. Your run-up has lost any sense of spring, your arm is coming over too low.You are conscious of the danger of over-training; you suspect your early-season problems were at least partly caused by over-training. You stop after 120 deliveries. You are nagged by a sense of laziness. You are aware that this is the danger of your personality: your solution to any problem is to do it more, do it harder. You are not good at doing it wiser or doing it better. You have six days till your first game back after ten weeks. You decide the best preparation is one more gentle session. You jog home, weary but with a nagging sense that you could have done more. Nike Air Presto Ultra Flyknit Grise . India will host Spain in the Davis Cup World Group playoff tie from September 16-18. A 4-1 win over South Korea in the Asia/Oceania second round tie in Chandigarh ensured India a spot in the playoffs.Though India made it to the playoffs both in 2014 and 2015, losses to Serbia and Czech Republic had them slipping back to the continental group.?Seeded sixth, Spain are just the kind of opponents India have been looking to avoid. With 12 players in singles and five in the doubles top 100 ranking, even a second-string Spanish side could pretty much spell doom for India. The singles scenario looks anything but promising for India. Yuki Bhambri, Indias highest-ranked singles player at 151, is recovering from an elbow injury while Somdev Devvarman whos nursing a sore heel is placed at an unimpressive 433 in the rankings. For greenhorns Ramkumar Ramanathan and Saketh Myneni, who made their maiden live rubber appearance against South Korea last weekend, it could be too tall an order. Even if one were to count out Rafael Nadal, the likes of Feliciano Lopez and Roberto Bautista Agut would be enough to overwhelm India.dddddddddddd Non-playing captain Anand Amritraj is certainly a worried man. Last two years we made the World Group playoff, only to slip back, he said, It is near-impossible to make the World Group without any of our singles players in the top 100. Thats our primary problem.Reacting to the development, India coach Zeeshan Ali said that they would have to make a call on the playing surface. Well have to talk to the players too to see their surface preference. Its going to be a really tough tie to say the least, he said.In the three instances that theyve played each other at the Davis Cup, Spain has won twice. The last time they faced off was at the inter-zonal final in 1965 which Spain won 3-2. Indias lone win against Spain came in 1927. MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- During the course of two blowout victories, No. 19 West Virginia emptied its bench and coasted through sloppy stretches.Only two members of the Mountaineers (2-0) played 20 minutes in each game as coach Bob Huggins experimented with various groupings, paying particular interest to the progress of six freshmen. He used all 14 available players in Mondays 107-66 romp against Mississippi Valley State, with only guard Daxter Miles sitting out with an extended illness. When you play that many guys its hard to be sharp, Huggins said. Were going to have to limit the rotation, but at least those two games were a good chance to see what players can do -- or not do.After starting 65 games the previous two seasons, Miles is not expected back for Sunday afternoons game against New Hampshire (2-1), a mid-major program coming off an erratic week. The Wildcats stunned Temple 57-52, only to come crashing down Thursday during a 65-57 home loss to Abilene Christian.Theres a right way to lose and theres a wrong way to lose, and we lost the wrong way, said UNH coach Bill Herrion.I saw it right from the beginning. We had a couple of opportunities early to attack the rim and make layups, and we were just flipping the ball nonchalantly and not going up strong.Guard Jaleen Smith (18 points, 9.7 rebounds) ignited New Hampshires second-half rally against Abilene Christian, and complements the inside-out skills of forward Tanner Leissner (14.3 points,10 rebounds).West Virginia, with its full-court press turning many possessions into scrambles, generates points from a number of angles, including forward Nathan Adrian (14 points, 8. 5 rebounds) and guard Jevon Carter (10 points, five assists). Six other players are averaging 8.5 points or more so far, though Huggins hasnt been pleased with the defensive intensity.A 64-28 halftime lead on Mississippi Valley State gave way to lethargic moments over the final 20 minutes, leaving Huggins to grouse.Id like for us to play 40 minutes, he said. What the good teams here have learned is that when you get somebody on the mat you try to keep them there. You dont let them up and say Lets try this again. This team hasnt learned that.Sundays matchup opens the NIT Tipoff, an event that will take West Virginia to Brooklyn during Thanksgiving weekend for games against Illinois and then Florida State or Temple.Huggins cautioned his team not to overlook UNH, which is building off the programs first 20-win season.New Hampshires good, he said. Theyre not Illinois, obviously, and theyre not Florida State, theyre not Virginia -- but theyre pretty good.We kinda didnt get ready for 2/3 zone a couple years ago and almost lost to Monmouth. Q: Team Canada announces their Olympic roster three weeks from today. Who is general manager Steve Yzerman watching? Robredo, ranked No. 16, bounced back from an upset loss to Leonardo Mayer in the second round of the Royal Guard Open in Chile last week to down Carreno Busta in 1 hour, 25 minutes. On a day filled mostly with qualifying matches, fifth-seeded Marcel Granollers of Spain also entered the second with a 7-5, 3-6, 6-2 win over Aljaz Bedene of Slovenia, while Guido Pella of Argentina defeated Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain 7-6 (6), 6-4 to advance. The MLB postseason is down to two teams. Its two we arent used to seeing at this stage. And so we ask:The Chicago Cubs havent won the World Series since 1908, and this is their first appearance since 1945. By comparison, the Cleveland Indians are downright used to winning, but only by comparison: This is their first World Series appearance sincee 1997, and they havent won it all since 1948.ddddddddddddCleveland hosts Games 1 and 2 before the series shifts to Chicago for (possibly) three straight games. If Games 6 and 7 are necessary, they will be in Ohio. The first day of the 2016 Capcom Cup consisted of nearly 13 hours of fighting game action and a body count that could only be described as a bloodbath. No player was safe from elimination and upsets littered the floor of the Esports Arena in Santa Ana, California. When the dust settled, there were eight players left to compete for the $120,000 first place prize: Joe MOV Egami, Team Liquids Du NuckleDu Dang, Evil Geniuses Ricki Ortiz, YOUDEALs Tatsuya MJS|Haitani Haitani and Fujimura Yukadon Atsushi, Team Razers Keita Fuudo Ai, Hail Marys Goichi Go1 Kishida, and GGPs Ryota Kazunoko Inoue. The shockers came early on Friday with heavyweights Team Razers Lee Infiltration Seon-woo and Hajime Tokido Taniguchi exiting the tournament without a win. The other tournament favorites, Evil Geniuses Yusuke Momochi Momochi and ZOWIEs Bruce GamerBee Hsiang finished with a disappointing record of 1-2. And Street Fighter legend Daigo The Beast Umehara also didnt make it out of the prelims. With all the upsets and consistent finishers falling short, the stage is set for a new champion to be crowned on Saturday. Heres a look at the players who still have a shot at the title.Joe MOV EgamiMOV was arguably the best Chun-Li in Street Fighter V and one of its finer players, but came into the finals with little fanfare or expectation. That was clearly a mistake because he handled matchup after matchup with relative ease and played his neutral game on his own terms. He was one of the best players in terms of reactions and character optimization and looked every bit like a tournament favorite.MOV may be the only Chun-Li player to use her full toolset and corral the most damage out of every opportunity -- an important strength to have in a tournament setting. His fearless disposition and bullying neutral game will be a nightmare for his upcoming opponents.Du NuckleDu DangThe North American champion NuckleDu was many peoples pick to make a deep run in the tournament, and he proved his supporters right. He destroyed his bracket and made short work out of his biggest road block in Qanba Douyus Zhuojun Xiao Hai Zeng with unrelenting aggression. His mastery over Rainbow Mika, Guile, and Nash will provide a strong stable of versatility and serves as his strongest asset. His fearlessness and clutch factor rank among the best in the fighting game community and he remains the best chance for a North American victory in Anaheim.Ricki OrtizOne of the bigger surprises of the Capcom Cup was the emergence of Ricki Ortiz Chun-Li. She was already considered one of the best in the Western Hemisphere, but was not a favorite for the Capcom Cup. That said, she was arguably the most the clutch out of every character in the tournament; she ground out victories regardless of her characters vitality or stage positioning.Ortiz will enter the top 8 in the winners bracket with the chance to truly cement Chun-Lis status as a monster in Street Fighter V. Her pluses include an infallible mindset and attitude and some of the best hit-confirms among the rest of the tournament field.Tatsuya HaitaniTatsuya Haitani was considered one of the best, if not the best, in Japan when Street Fighter V was in its infancy, but his tournament results never reflected the talk. Haitanis Necalli was always optimized and advanced in character technology, but his play never shared the same spotlight as Tokido or even Momochi. That changed when his Necalli stood tall over every one of his opponents on Friday.Haitanis offensive patterns are unpredictable and only increases in potency upon v-trigger activation. This is the player to truly watch because hes due for a big-time win.Fujimura Yukadon AtsushiThe Evolution Fighting Game Championship top 8 finalist was an afterthought when Capcom Cup started. He was the second-best Nash in name and surprised everyone when he kept winning and advancing on Friday. Whether it was through a comeback or his ever-changing play style, he was impossible to crack over a five-game set.Yukadon is one of the few players who can switch his style on a whim; he can play in-your-face from the start and then immediately become a wall. His ability to come back in any game is also no small factor in his success.Keita Fuudo AiThe fighting game wizard entered the Capcom Cup as arguably the scariest opponent to pick up the stick. Fuudo has been on a break since his second-place finish at Evolution Fighting Game Championships and only played in five events this year. Fuudo was the pioneer behind the effective defensive and methodical style that most top Rainbow Mika players employ when using with the mix-up grappler. His strengths, many of which are among the top in the competitive scene, are numerous: anti-airs, ground game, defensive counter-attacks and patience. Despite his losers bracket status, he remains among the top threats to take the Capcom Cup.Goichi Go1 KishidaGo1 reminded everyone of all the hype that surrounded him when he first entered a Street Fighter V tournament. This was a player with ridiculous execution, a stubborn offensive-only mindset, and the best character in the game. The third Chun-Li player in the top 8 is an offensive madman. Hes constantly pushing the action, whether on the ground or the air and easily overwhelms opposing game plans. Go1s pace will be the only one that exists in the game when he plays.Ryan Kazunoko InoueThe 2015 Capcom Cup champion was lost in the Street Fighter V shuffle and emerged again when he destroyed his bracket en route to a top 8 berth. Kazunoko was the biggest oversight and wasnt even the best Cammy when the tournament started, but that all changed in a flash.Offense, reactions, hit-confirms, frenetic pace, and proficient reads are all the opponent needs to know about this dynamo. The final rounds of the Capcom Cup begin at 9 p.m. ET on streaming channels and will be broadcast on ESPN2 on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET. Nike Air Max Typha Mens Black/Electric Green/Pink . Its sharpness matched my mind. This was no night to go to sleep. Nike Air Max Typha White . Marincin has played in two NHL games so far this season with two penalty minutes. The 21-year-old has three goals, four assists and a plus-5 rating in 24 games with the American Hockey Leagues Oklahoma City Barons this season. http://www.airmaxtypha.com/nike-air-max-typha-men-s-training-shoe-royal-blue-vivid-orange-820198-484.html .Y. -- Knicks coach Mike Woodson said Wednesday that J. Hard-core college football fans may not think they know anything about NASCAR. NASCAR fans can sometimes be a little sensitive when it comes to embracing stick-and-ball sports. But the reality is that no two big league sports are more interwoven than football and racing. And it is way more than just that they both wear helmets and have officials who throw yellow flags. So, leave it up to those of us who love both (and cover both) to use Saturday nights Battle at Bristol (Virginia Tech vs. Tennessee, 8 p.m. ET on ABC) as an opportunity to educate both sides on...um...both sides of the connection.Andy Papathanassiou: Known to most as Andy Papa, he played offensive guard at Stanford and shortly after graduation was introduced to NASCAR at the nearby Sonoma Raceway. In 1992 he was hired by Hendrick Motorsports (the Alabama Crimson Tide of racing) as the sports first-ever team pit-crew coordinator. Employing football-based physical training regimens and drills, Papa oversaw Jeff Gordons revolutionary Rainbow Warriors pit crew and dramatically shaved the time the car spent on pit road. As Gordon dominated the sport, rival teams who had initially laughed at Papas gridiron methods for changing tires started copying his ideas.Brian Piccolo: Bowman Gray Stadium, also known as The Madhouse is located in eastern Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It houses both a quarter-mile asphalt short track and a college football field, home of the Winston-Salem State Rams. The top floor of the fieldhouse is also home to WSSUs motorsports management school. The racetrack was co-opened by NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. in 1947 and has hosted NASCAR races since 1949, the longest run of any weekly track. That tally includes 29 Sprint Cup (then Grand National) Series races, won by legends such as Richard Petty, David Pearson and Bobby Allison. From 1956-67 it served as the home field for Wake Forest Demon Deacons football, including Brian Piccolo of Brians Song fame. In fall 1964, Junior Johnson won on the racetrack while Piccolo rushed for a then-stadium-record 140 yards vs. South Carolina.Cale Yarborough: Before he was a four-time Daytona 500 winner, the fire hydrant known as Cale Yarborough was a high school football star in Timmonsville, South Carolina, and earned a scholarship to play for Clemson. Upon arrival to his first training camp with the Tigers, Yarborough informed legendary coach Frank Howard that he needed to go back home in order to run one last race and secure his local short-track championship. (In a twist, that career began on Sumter, South Carolinas Gamecock Speedway.) Howard was having none of that. He told me if I went home to run that race to go on and pack all my stuff because I wasnt coming back to Clemson, Yarborough recalled last week at the Darlington Raceway. So I packed and left. He kept calling me after that. Finally, I said, I did what you told me to do, so now Im going to be a race car driver. He said, Son, youre gonna starve to death. Yarborough won 83 races, three Winston Cup championships and was elected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011.Daytona: When NASCAR founder and chairman Bill France Sr. built the Daytona International Speedway in 1959, he also envisioned hosting other nonmotorsports events at his new show palace. There have been four college games played on the grass that separates the front stretch from pit road, the grass that Daytona 500 viewers are used to seeing painted with big corporate logos during the Great American Race. Those games, hosted by the Bethune-Cookman Wildcats, were played in 1974-75. Ever since the speedway maintenance crews have referred to that area as the football field. Just this year Daytona unveiled a $400 million facilities makeover to become what track officials like to call the first NASCAR stadium. Track president and uber-promoter Joie Chitwood III (yes, of the Chitwood Thrill Show Chitwoods) has floated the idea of hosting a college game, or even inviting the Jacksonville Jaguars to bring a game down I-95.Everywhere: Daytona, Bowman-Gray and Bristol are certainly not alone when it comes to sharing college football and NASCAR. Buffalos War Memorial Stadium was home to Canisius College football, early Buffalo Bills teams and a quarter-mile dirt track that hosted one NASCAR Grand National race, won by Jim Reed in 1958. Chicagos Soldier Field hosted the College All-Star Game for more than four decades and was also home to a half-mile asphalt oval. On July 21, 1956, Hall of Famer Fireball Roberts won the only NASCAR event held at Soldier Field. Just three weeks later the NFL champion Cleveland Browns defeated the college stars, including West Virginia linebacker Sam Huff 26-0. In one of my favorite explanations ever, a NASCAR historian Greg Fielden said the Soldier Field track was removed in 1970 following protests by hippies.Fast cars and superstars: In June 2007 ABC aired a reality show where NASCAR stars coached celebrities to race in a time-trial competition at Charlotte Motor Speedway. John Elway, coached by 2004 Cup champ Kurt Busch, defeated a field that included Serena Williams and John Cena. On set, the real drama came when former NC State player/Steelers coach Bill Cowher wrecked not once, but twice.Gibbs: While he was still in the midst of his first stint as Washington Redskins head coach, lifelong gearhead Joe Gibbs became a NASCAR team owner in 1991. The following year he won the Daytona 500 with driver Dale Jarrett (who turned down a football scholarship to Gardner-Webb to be a racer), and in the quarter-century since, he has built a NASCAR empire, winning 138 Cup Series races and four Cup titles. His right-hand men at Joe Gibbs Racing have been his sons. J.D. Gibbs was a defensive back and quarterback at William & Mary from 1987-90 and also made 29 starts as a driver across three different NASCAR series. Coy Gibbs was an outstanding linebacker at Stanford, leading the team in tackles in 1994. Both sons have been longtime executives at JGR.Harbaugh: Back when he was still Captain Comeback, the then-Indianapolis Colts QB became co-owner of the Panther Racing IndyCar team, winners of two series championships and near-winners of the Indianapolis 500. In June he attended the Sprint Cup race at the Michigan International Speedway as a guest of Joe Gibbs and is a fan of 2012 Cup champ and Michigan native Brad Keselowski. The whole drivers arent athletes debate is a joke, the head Wolverine said earlier this year. Anyone who says that has never been to a race.Instant replay: Reviewable calls arent just a football thing. Over the last decade NASCAR has been very aggressive about integrating video cameras and replay capabilities to help Race Control keep an eye on all 40 cars, 300-plus crew members and every inch of their miles-plus-sized playing surfaces. The multicamera NASCAR replay system is so advanced it has largely replaced the former army of on-the-ground human officials. That system has attracted calls of interest from college officiating coordinators with tech questions as they push toward centralized officiating HQs to oversee game weekends.Josh Jones: Known to NASCAR fans on Twitter as Mother Function and for his epic practical joke duels with his boss, Jones is director of business development for KHI Management, the celebrity marketing agency owned by 2014 Sprint Cup camp Kevin

I was born in 1990, and am thus squarely a millennial- or, in cricketing terms, a member of the T20 generation. T20, which was invented in 2003, has been around for a majority of my cricket-watching life. We are often told that Test cricket is an anachronistic format, out of touch with modern lifestyles, and especially with the habits and preferences of us millennials. T20, by contrast, represents the games future. My hope, as a lover of Tests, is to persuade you that this conventional wisdom is misguided- that there is no reason why those of us in our twenties or younger cannot enjoy Tests even more than T20.I should admit at the outset that I did not choose to be a Test fan. I was raised as one. In this, as in much else, Test cricket resembles classical music: to those who arent brought up on it, it can seem intimidating, or dull, or outdated. But- as with classical music- the problem lies less with the nature of the format itself, but in how it is presented and described. The same is true of millennial culture: our generation are persistently reduced to labels and stereotypes that range from overly simplistic to wholly false. The idea that ours is a generation fit only for T20 comes from the notion that millennials are chronically attention-deprived, and impatient of anything longer than a six-second Vine. How can five-day Tests work in the age of Snapchat? But ours is a generation strangely attracted to the epic as well as the ephemeral. The success of the Harry Potter and Neapolitan novels is testament to the mass, global appeal of immersive, drawn-out sagas.Nowhere is the rise of the epic more evident than in television: we have gone from watching episodes once a week to binge-viewing entire seasons, of episodes sometimes twice the traditional length, over a weekend. Hollywood blockbusters are longer on average than they were in the 1980s and 1990s, and increasingly form multi-film franchises. In literature, TV and film, the dominant trend is towards the epic: to deep, sustained engagement with a set of characters over dozens of hours. No sport other than cricket has flirted with contraction: and those that arent played to a fixed clock, like baseball and tennis, grow longer every year. Mens tennis, in particular, saw a revival of interest thanks to the Federer-Nadal rivalry, five-hour five-setters that were a test of the viewers endurance as well as the players.Clearly, it is not that millennials cant watch Tests because they are too long. What of the other common claim, that Tests are boring? Here, too, Tests suffer from an image problem, rather than a structural flaw. T20 is branded as accessible entertainment, while Tests are defended in terms of virtue rather than pleasure. But Tests are neither slow nor dull: their pace is lifelike, periods of great intensity accompanied by longer periods of more gradual development. It is a pace common to long novels and novel-like TV dramas. T20, a highly structured format with a narrow range of outcomes, cannot hope to compete with the freedom and variety of Tests. It is no accident that the greatest entertainers of this century- the likes of Warne, Sehwag, Gilchrist, and Pietersen- were most effective and compelling as Test cricketers. One millennial stereotype with considerable truth to it is that we are attracted, above all, to new and memorable experiences. Paradoxically, the oldest form of the game is, to many fans my age, the most unfamiliar. If you are someone whose cricket diet consists primarily of the IPL and other T20, you may well feel, on watching your first few Tests, that you are encountering not a different format but a different sport. A sport that offers much- in the form of pleasure- that the shorter formats cannot. You are likely to notice, first, the greater seriousness and commitment that the players bring to the Test arena. And, in time, you will find that Tests varied and lifelike pace make not only for greater enjoyment in the moment, but also the indelible memories that form the psyche of the sports fan; the memories that T20, in particular, struggles to create. To choose between Tests and T20 is to ask ourselves what we want from sport, and from entertainment. At an IPL match, the action on the field is made to compete with many other forms of show- bat and ball is only one act in the vaudeville. It is an approach that speaks to a lack of confidence in the ability of cricket itself to entertain. Sometimes- as with the demand that players speak to the commentators while batting, bowling or fielding- the entertainment openly undermines the sport. At a Test match, by contrast, even in the fan-friendly stadia of England and Australia, there are no sideshows, no mid-over diversions. There is only cricket. And it is perhaps only by watching Tests that one can truly answer the question: why watch cricket at all, over all the other sports out there? Every sport has a set of qualities that go beyond its rules or equipment that make it unique. Take crickets two most popular global peers. Football is marked by its sheer simplicity, by its democratic spirit, and by its production of indelible moments, most of them short enough for a Vine. Basketball is a choreographed show of improbable athleticism, a ballet performed by decathletes. To ask what makes cricket different from other sports is to ask, what makes cricket cricket? More than anything it is its pace. In its slow movements Test cricket offers the illusions of stillness and eternity: at other times it is far more anxiety-provoking than the shorter formats, with their rigid structures and guarantees of impending release. At the end of a good Test match- never mind a great one- the fan who watched every ball is left with a weary emptiness, a sense that the preceding days contained all of life within them. Imagine how the players feel! The famous photograph of Brett Lee and Andrew Flintoff at Edgbaston in 2005 gives some sense of it. On this count, no other sport can compare.Culture doesnt only move forward. The same generation that abandoned newspapers and DVDs has led the renaissance of vinyl, a format deemed anachronistic three decades ago. Physical books, too, have survived many obituaries. To an extent, Tests is like sarod music, or lyric poetry, or the tiger- worth conserving because they are beautiful, and because life would be less worth living without them. But conserving Tests is best done by not restricting their pleasures to a few. Far from being out of tune with my generation, Test cricket, at its best, may be ideally suited to it. The cricketing world is divided between those that love Tests, and those that could if they were given the chance.Keshava Guha, 25, is a Bengaluru-based writer of fiction and of literary and political journalism. He has been a fan of Test cricket for two decades, and his optimism about its future is grounded in the fact that, as a long-suffering supporter of Arsenal FC, he knows a lost cause when he sees one. LONDON -- FIFA President Gianni Infantino has suggested having 16 three-team groups if the World Cup expands to 48 countries.Members of the FIFA Council received a recommendation from world soccers governing body setting out five proposed formats for its showpiece event from 2026 -- two 48-team team options, two 40-team options and sticking at 32.---48 TEAMSInfantino first advocated a new, opening playoff round for 32 of the 48 finalists. The 16 winners would then join 16 seeded teams to begin a 32-team group stage that follows the current World Cup format. But with 16 teams going home after only one game, that idea met with opposition at a meeting of 20 FIFA member nations in Paris last month.Ahead of a meeting of Asian soccer nations in Singapore this week, Infantino drew up a new configuration for a 48-team World Cup that FIFA hopes is easier to understand. All qualifying nations would start out in 16 groups of three teams. The top two teams advance to a new round of 32, with the bottom-place team going home after two matches. The finalists would still play a total of seven games, limiting potential opposition from clubs who send their players on international duty. But only having three games in each group raises the possibility of teams being hard to separate on points, goals scored or goal difference. FIFA is exploring how to determine which teams advance in that scenario, with administrators mulling if penalty shootouts could be used for bonus points.---40 TEAMSInfantino championed a mathematically-clunky 40-team World Cup before being elected in February.Although Sepp Blatters successor no longer backs this plan, two options will still be on the table when the FIFA Council meets in January. There could be eight groups of five teams or 10 groups of four.---32 TEAMSFor the World Cup in Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, there will be no change to the 32-team format that has existed since 1998.However, with Infantinos term ending in 2019, giving more countries a chance to play on world soccers biggest stage would be a popular move among many federations.Everyone sees that the increase of the participation for the World Cup is really a tool to promote football in more countries, Infantino said last month.---Rob Harris is at www.twitter.com/RobHarris and www.facebook.com/RobHarrisReports Jordan 32 Gatorade Low . -- Jonathan Drouin gave Halifax the boost it needed to edge host Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-2 in a shootout in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action. Australia have admitted they were sent into a lather by Faf du Plessis crafty declaration on the first evening of the Adelaide Test, a call that left Steven Smith and Usman Khawaja fuming as David Warner was unable to take his usual spot as an opener after spending time off the field.Warner complained of shoulder pain and went for treatment late in South Africas innings, but upon overhearing that the opener needed to spend a further six minutes on the field, du Plessis closed his innings. I listened to the conversation he had with the umpires, one ear talking to the batter and one ear listening to him and then I heard he had six minutes left before he could bat again so I thought lets have a crack, du Plessis said.Warner and Smith both remonstrated with the umpires on their way off the field, with du Plessis closure the earliest in terms of overs in the first innings of a Test unaffected by bad weather. He went off for some treatment towards the end and was off for too long, Josh Hazlewood said of Warner. So they messed their timings up and he couldnt bat straight away. Uzzy had to bat and adapted pretty well and we got through. The guys were a little bit annoyed, especially Smithy and probably Uzzy who had to go out and bat, but its just one of those things. It rarely happens, but it happened today and the way Uzzy adapted to the situation he did a great job for us today.Hazlewood confirmed it was up to Warner to ensure he was not caught out in this way, and said the team would likely receive an apology from the vice-captain as a result. Its probably the player himself, he said. You know the rules and he was just off the field for too long. Hell hold himself accountable, thats how Davey goes, so hell know he did the wrong thing, apologise to the group and especially Usman, and hell learn from it and hopefully it wont happen again. As for du Plessis, Hazlewood could only doff his cap. I think he mightve had a rough idea, yeah, he said. Hes quite cagey like that, pulled the pin and declared and caught us out a little bit. After mostly cruising through four games, fifth-ranked North Carolina takes a different kind of challenge this week. The Maui Invitational should test the Tar Heels endurance.North Carolina has won each game by double-digit margins, so the likelihood for heightened competition is appealing at this stage of the season.I think that is what the whole team wants, Tar Heels guard Joel Berry said. We want a good challenge. We still have to go out there and play our hardest, so we can try and get better. I think going out to Maui and playing against some better competition will help us.The tournament schedule calls for three games in three days at Lahaina Civic Center, with the Tar Heels beginning Monday night against tournament host Chaminade (2-0), a Division II program. This is North Carolinas seventh appearance in the Maui Invitational, with the Tar Heels reaching the finals five times and winning the 1999, 2004 and 2008 events. The Tar Heels have a 15-3 record in the tournament.Coach Roy Williams said the competition is important. Hes also prone to point out the fringe benefits of the trip because he enjoys tropical weather. We go to Maui every four years for a reason -- the head coach likes it, Williams said.Yet the Tar Heels are aware that the basketball value is of utmost importance. We have to go with the right mindset, senior forward Kennedy Meeks said. I know its a nice place to go.North Carolina holds a 4-0 record for the first time since November 2012.Freshman post player Tony Bradley has scored in double figures in all four North Carolina games. Thats the most consecutive games in double figures at the beginning of a college career for a Tar Heel since Brandan Wrights 18-game stretch in 2006-07.Williams, with a 787-209 coaching record, moved into ninth place in Division I mens coaching victories with Friday nights 83-68 win at Hawaii. He passed Lefty Driesell. That game also resulted in the lowest point total of the season for the Tar Heels, who rang up more than 90 points in the first three games of the season -- something they hadnt done in 22 years. This marks the third Maui Invitational appearance in a row in which the Tar Heels will match up with Chaminade, though the last time it came in a consolation round.Chaminade, which was coming off a 12-15 record in 2015-16, hasnt played since winning Nov. 11 and 12 against Alaska Anchorage and Alaska, respectively, to open the new season. Our defense has been really, really good, sixth-year coach Eric Bovaird said on the schools web site. Its something weve focused on. Were getting better. Its something were going to focus on.Guards Rohndell Goodwin and Kiran Shastri averaged 24 and 20.5 points in the opening two games for Chaminade. Sam Daly, who was among the best in the Pacific West Conference last season in assists and steals, is a senior guard in his second year with the Silverswords after transferring from Grand Canyon.Starting out 2-0 going into Maui feels really good, Bovaird said. The North Carolina-Chaminade winner takes on the Connecticut-Oklahoma State winner in Tuesday nights semifinals, while the losers meet in the consolation bracket. Manchester Uniteds EFL Cup win over Northampton did little to brighten Jose Mourinhos mood on Wednesday night. The Portuguese coach railed against footballs Einsteins, who he believes have tried to delete 16 years of his managerial career. It was the latest in a long line of colourful outbursts from Mourinho, and got ESPN thinking -- who is footballs king of coaching quips? You decide...Jose Mourinho: The self-proclaimed special one has never shied away from a press conference barb. In the past he has claimed that Rafa Benitez destroyed the best team in Europe after succeeding him at Inter, and called Arsene Wenger both a voyeur and a specialist in failure.Brian Clough: The man who took two provincial rivals -- Derby County and Nottingham Forest -- to the English championship (and beyond) almost on force of character alone. Clough famously once said of his abilities: I wouldnt say I was the best manager in the business. But I was in the top one.Sir Alex Ferguson: Football, bloody hell. That was Fergusons succinct summation of Manchester Uniteds 1999 Champions League, and it has come to be used as sporting shorrthand.ddddddddddddThe former Red Devils boss also coined the phrase?squeaky-bum time to describe a tense season run-in.Jurgen Klopp: Klopp famously compared the way in which his Borussia Dortmund side played to heavy metal ahead of a clash with Arsenal. He [Arsene Wenger] likes having the ball, playing football, passes. Its like an orchestra. But its a silent song. I like heavy metal. Has also described himself as the normal one.Claudio Ranieri: The Italians press conferences were a colourful accompaniment to Leicesters surge to the title last season. Ranieri offered his players pizza for wins, compared himself to Pavarotti and even coined a new phrase -- Dilly-ding, dilly-dong!Bill Shankly: The man who turned Liverpool into the dominant force in English football in the 1960s and 70s once opined that football was much more serious than life and death. His attitude towards winning was best summed up when he said: If you are first you are first. If you are second you are nothing. Under-fire ARL commission chairman John Grant will continue in his post for the foreseeable future after striking a deal with the NRL clubs calling for his head.On a day of high drama at Rugby League Central, Grant, NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg and the commission agreed to a funding arrangement to appease the clubs. It was speculated that the clubs would demand that Grant would stand down by this time next year however Greenberg said an exit date hadnt been negotiated. There is no time limit on his tenure at all, Greenberg said.John will serve as long as the members what him to serve.Grants relationship with the clubs and state leagues looked beyond repair after they called the emergency general meeting where they planned to sack him.The two parties now have the difficult task of getting back on the same page, something Grant always insisted was achievable despite the public campaign to axe him.Greenberg argued that his offsider always had the best interests of the game at heart and had the difficult task of appeasing opposing groups who were all competing for a slice of the $1.8 billion TV deal. This is not a new phenomenon in sport where the distribution of funding creates debate, Greenberg said.Rugby league is no different to most others. Buttler - who hit a two-ball duck in a debut defeat for Mumbai on Saturday - struck three fours and three sixes in his knock, sharing in a 66-run partnership with Rohit Sharma, the skipper supremely impressive himself with an unbeaten 84 from 54 balls. His opposite number, Kolkata captain Gautam Gambhir, earlier cracked 62 from 52 deliveries - although was dropped twice - while putting on a hundred partnership with Manish Pandey (52 off 29 balls), who also notched fifty.A trademark big-hitting cameo from Andre Russell (36 off 17) featuring four sixes, helped fire the Knight Riders up to a score of 187-5, put it proved not to be enough as Buttler helped blast Mumbai to victory. Inside the IPL: Jos Buttler announced himself to the IPL with 41 from 22 balls. Put into bat first, for once Kolkatas experienced opening pair of Gambhir and Robin Uthappa didnt fire, with the latter dismissed for eight by the impressive Mitchell McClenaghan (2-25) in the fourth over.A fairly sedate start by the Knight Riders - at 45-1 in the seventh over - suddenly then sparked into life as Pandey hit Hardik Pandya for the first six of the innings over long-on.Two more maximums followed from Pandeys bat, while Gaambhir struck one, although he was fortunate to be at the crease, having been dropped on 30 by Sharma at midwicket off Jagadeesha Suchith, and then again on 55 by Jasprit Bumrah, a simple chance off his own bowling.ddddddddddddThe Kolkata skipper made Mumbai pay, with his fifty coming off 39 deliveries, and his partner Pandeys even quicker at 26 balls - though he fell soon after, caught and bowled by Harbhajan Singh (1-31).In came Russell, who smashed three sixes in his first eight balls, including two in the same Tim Southee over.He managed one more maximum before dragging McClenaghan onto his stumps in the 18th over, Mumbai fighting back well at the end of the innings - Gambhir finally dismissed, caught by wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, and Colin Munro run out for four.Sharma signalled Mumbais intent third ball by smashing Russell for six over deep square leg, as he and Patel (23 off 20) went about putting fifty on for the first wicket inside the first five overs, before the latter was run out by Brad Hogg in the sixth. After Pandya wasted 10 balls for just nine runs at three, McClenaghan (20) was sent in up the order as a pinch-hitter, ahead of Buttler and Kieron Pollard. The move paid off as the New Zealander slogged three sixes in his eight-ball knock, punishing Piyush Chawla for back-to-back sixes in the 11th over, before falling to Kuldeep Yadav soon after.Sharma serenely went through to fifty off 38 balls while Buttler got going at the other end - hitting three sixes and two fours off five consecutive deliveries across the 15th and 16th overs to swing the game in Mumbais favour.Buttler couldnt see it through to the finish, falling in the penultimate over, but Sharma smacked Russells next three balls for boundaries, and Pollard nudged the single needed from the final over to win it for Mumbai.Watch continued coverage of the IPL on Sky Sports, with the next live action seeing the two new franchises, Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants face off from 3pm on Sky Sports 2 on Thursday. Jenson Button vented his frustration at F1s pathetic radio rules after he was penalised for what seemed to be a safety issue during the Hungarian Grand Prix.Button slowed on the fifth lap at the Hungaroring, immediately telling McLaren his brake pedal was dropping to the floor when he pressed it. McLarens response was: Do not shift, we have lost hydraulic pressure, only for the 2009 world champion to receive a drive-through penalty for banned radio communications, something required following the tightening of the radio regulations.Later in the race, Button took to his radio to say: So the brake pedal going to the floor is not classed as a safety issue? Quite interesting. I think Charlie [Whiting, FIA race director] needs to read up on what is safe and what isnt.Button, who eventually retired from the race with an oil leak, was adamant afterwards that he had been penalised for a safety issue which could have led to an accident. Its a stupid regulation, Button said after the race. I completely understand that drivers should not be fed information that helps us drive the car, Im totally with that because I think its wrong that we are told every corner where our team mate is quicker or slower than us, and fuel saving should be down to us and so much should be down to us but when its a safety concern, the brake pedal going to the floor, you shouldnt get penalised for stopping an accident but we did today. The rules were enforced to stop drivers being coached by the pit wall after a flurry of fan complaints in 2015. Button agrees with the principal of the rule but says his issue in Hungary was proof it has gone too far. There are certain things I like with drivers not being allowed to ask how quick their teammate is, or whether they should rub their arse on certain corners or pick their nose but for me I think its pathetic that you get penalised for stopping an incident.Asked whether the Grand Prix Drivers Association needed to raise it as an issue to the FIA, he replied: Its not for the GPDA to make the call its for Formula One to realise their mistakes. I think weve done... Formula One has realised its mistakes in terms of where the cars are right now, next year I think the regulations are really exciting but this rule...It shouldnt need the drivers to speak out, its common sense. Thats something which is obviously missing at some points when these regulations are written. MADRID -- Real Madrid is relying on the successful formula of a year ago as it attempts to become the first team to win back-to-back Champions League titles, betting on the same stars who triumphed last season.Confident that it already has what it takes to repeat as champion, Madrid bypassed high-profile signings after clinching its 11th European trophy last year, limiting its moves to players not in the starting lineup entering the new season.Madrids only significant addition ahead of its Champions League debut against Sporting Lisbon on Wednesday was young forward Alvaro Morata, who spent two seasons with Juventus and played for Spain at Euro 2016. It also brought back Marco Asensio from his loan at Espanyol, a midfielder who has been playing well and also made it to Spains national team. Several players left, including Jese Rodriguez to Paris Saint-Germain, but none who had been playing regularly among the starters. There should be no major changes to the starting lineup from the team that defeated Atletico Madrid in a penalty shootout in last seasons final. Were in very good shape ahead of the Champions League. Weve got many players who are back and available and thats key, midfielder Luka Modric said. Weve got an impressive squad. In every position weve got two or three players and were very happy with that. Many of Madrids title rivals added new players, but Madrid president Florentino Perez and coach Zinedine Zidane didnt feel the need to go shopping for more top players even though a one-year signing ban from FIFA was looming for breaking rules protecting underage players. The ban went into effect after this summers transfer window. The squad again will be led by the likes of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Luka Modric, Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo. The team is looking good and solid, Ronaldo said after Madrid routed Osasuna 5-2 in the Spanish league on Saturday. Weve started well and I hope we can continue to do well.Madrid started the new season on the right foot, winning the UEFA Super Cup and its first three Spanish league games to take the early lead in the competition it hasnt won since 2012.There are a lot of games coming up and weve got very good strength in depth and good players, Zidane said. Well be looking to continue this good run.Madrid was drawn into Group F in this years Champions League, which also has Borussia Dortmund and Legia Warsaw.---HISTORYOnly four teams ever made it back to the Champions League final a year after winning the title: Milan in 1995, Ajax in 1996, Juventus in 1997 and Manchester United in 2009.Milan was the last team to win consecutive European titles, before the new Champions League was created in 1992-93. The Italian team did it in 1989-90. Ten years earlier, Nottingham Forest won back-to-back titles in 1979-80. Liverpool had consecutive triumphs in 1977-78. Benfica and Inter Milan also won back-to-back titles.Bayern Munich won three in a row from 1974-76, and Ajax did the same from 1971-73. Brett Rypien grew up in a crimson family 90 minutes north of the Washington State campus where his uncle Mark is immortalized in the schools athletic hall of fame as part of the great lineage of Cougars quarterbacks.Rypien was a record-setting prep quarterback at the same high school where his uncle was a star, and the choice of where he played collegiately was based on where he wanted to go, not who came to find him. Going to Washington State was not what Rypien wanted, however. He didnt want to always face the comparisons to what his uncle did at the school three decades ago. He wanted his own college experience. So when Rypien finally chose to play at Boise State, he avoided the endless comparisons to his uncle. But he was also stepping into a different kind of shadow. It let me step out of Marks shadow and into Kellen Moores, Rypien joked this week. All kidding aside, there will be strife in the Rypien family this weekend when Washington State travels to face Boise State. What was initially supposed to be the marquee non-conference opportunity for Boise State this season is now also a seemingly must-win game for the Cougars after they got stunned at home by Eastern Washington on the opening weekend. While the Cougars were getting shocked by an FCS program in Week 1 for the second straight year, Rypien was putting up numbers in the Broncos opener at Louisiana that make Boise State fans salivate over whats to come with the young quarterback. Rypien threw for 304 yards in the first half as Boise State scored touchdowns on five of its first seven possessions. Rypien finished with 347 yards passing, the sixth time in his young career that hes topped the 300-yard mark.Last season was supposed to be a year of watching for Rypien. He was going to follow the plan Boise State used with Moore -- redshirt as a freshman -- before taking charge of the program. Moore went on to be the winningest quarterback in FBS history, leading the Broncos to 50 wins in his four seasons at Boise State, throwing for nearly 15,000 yards and 143 touchdowns. That plan to follow what Moore did lasted all of three games. When Ryan Finley went down with an ankle injury in the first half against Idaho State and the team realized it was going to be a significant injury, the call went out to Rypien. You think youre redshirting and then all of a sudden youre thrown into the fire, Rypien said. It was kind of a blur to be honest.Rypien finished last season leading the Mountain West with 3,353 yards passing and was the conference freshman of the year. He threw for 506 yards against New Mexico and capped his year with 377 yards passing and three touchdowns in the Poinsettia Bowl blowout of Northern Illinois. There is a tremendous amount of stuff hes got to get better at from fundamentals to understanding to situational football to leading and these are all things that have been addressed, Boise State coach Bryan Harsin said. And the thing about Brett is I wouldnt say the way he played was always the most impressive, but the most impressive thing is what hes done since hes played to put himself in a better position this year, hopefully. This is the only week there will be strained allegiances in the Rypien family. Mark, who was a first-team all-Pac-10 quarterback at Washington State and later a Super Bowl MVP, has been an invaluable resource for his nephew on various football-related issues in the past. He even flew out to Virginia last September when Brett made his first career start against the Cavaliers.I know its going to be difficult on him. Hes already told me, he hopes I throw for a lot of yards in that game, but we lose by three, Brett Rypien said. I know where his heart is at for sure, but its going to be tough, I think, on him.---Online: AP College Football site: http://collegefootball.ap.org/ Air Max 98 Thunder Blue Hombre .
