LOS ANGELES -- UCLA?wide receiver Cordell Broadus, the son of Snoop Dogg, has, for the second time, decided to walk away from football, Bruins coach Jim Mora announced Monday.Broadus, the No. 130-ranked player in the Class of 2015, made the same decision prior to last football season before returning to the program as a walk-on for spring practice. He is going to pursue other passions in his life, and we encourage that and I appreciate the fact that he came back out in the spring and gave it another shot, but this is an incredibly talented young man in so many areas, Mora said. It will be fun to watch what he does with his life. We havent heard the last from him. Probably just getting started. In an emotional Instagram post last year, Broadus said: I played football for my father because I thought that was the only way he would love me & be apart of my life. It took me 12 years to realize he loves Cordell Broadus the person not Cordell Broadus the football player. The best day of my life was when I heard those exact words.Broadus was not expected to be a significant contributor. NEW YORK -- Rough beginning, gritty finish -- and a mostly solid performance. That was Bryce Pettys second NFL start in a nutshell, a 23-17 overtime victory for the New York Jets on Sunday at San Francisco. He had some moxie, coach Todd Bowles said during a conference call Monday. But he had some reads hed like to have back and some things he couldve done better, but as the game went on, he got a little more comfortable and started using his legs better.Petty tossed an interception on his first pass that led to a 49ers touchdown one play later, but he wasnt rattled. He finished 23 of 35 for 257 yards, and had four rushes for 19 yards. No run was bigger than his 2-point conversion run when he looked more like a tailback than a quarterback, shaking off linebacker Ahmad Brooks and spinning his body into the end zone to get the Jets within 17-14 with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter. He started competing and he got a little more relaxed and his competitive nature started to come out, Bowles said during a conference call. He forgot he was like a first-year starter and started playing more to himself, so that was encouraging.Petty was elevated to starting quarterback for the final four games of the season by Bowles last week, pushing Ryan Fitzpatrick to the sideline. With New York out of the playoff hunt, the team decided to give Petty an extended look to see, perhaps, if he could be their quarterback heading into next season.A fourth-rounder last year out of Baylor, Petty showed the inconsistencies of a young and developing quarterback. There were steps because he actually started and prepared and played a whole game without having to look over his shoulder or come in for an emergency, Bowles said. Theres a long way to go, but there were some steps early on.Petty had some gunslinger-like throws down the field, including one late in the second quarter that threaded the needle so closely that it first appeared it was intercepted, but was actually caught one-handed by Quincy Enunwa. There was also the play that helped set up Bilal Powells winning touchdown run in overtime when Petty rolled to his left and, while facing pressure, launched a pass down the field to Robby Anderson, who leaped to make a 26-yard catch.Shoot, I think you just play QB and you go off your instincts, Petty said after the game.ddddddddddddPetty also had a handful of moments when he held the ball a bit too long, resulting in several of the 49ers six sacks. With three games to go -- all against AFC East opponents -- the Jets would like to see a few things from Petty moving forward, including better command of the offense, as well as clock and game management and making the right reads.Allow himself to play more for who he is as opposed to just being in the system and allowing some of his moxie to come out with some of the things he can do well, like move in the pocket and get his legs moving and get involved, Bowles said. You hope to see some of the corrections with the reads made in the coming weeks and making those types of throws and getting better from there. After the game, Petty gave himself mixed reviews, but was just thankful for the victory. The first half was probably about as ugly as I could play, he said. I came out a little more nervous than I thought I was going to be. I felt good all week, good practices all week, and then, for whatever reason, I just have to settle down. Hats off to the team for just sticking with me.Petty has a short week to prepare for Miami, with a home game Saturday night. After dealing with some nerves against the 49ers, Petty hopes there will be fewer knots in his stomach against the Dolphins.I hope that feeling starts to leave the more games that I get in there, Petty said. I dont know, in a sense, I like being nervous, I love it. I feel like the day that I stop getting nervous for football is probably the day that Im going to hang it up. Im just so passionate about football, and its that feeling that football gives me that nothing else gives me.Game notes Bowles said RB Matt Forte is day to day with a right knee injury after having an MRI on Monday, but wouldnt go into details. Forte left the game in the first quarter and didnt return. ... Bowles said rookie Brandon Shell, a fifth-rounder and the great-nephew of Art Shell, could start at right tackle if Breno Giacomini (back, shoulder, calf) and Brent Qvale (left hamstring) are unavailable.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '

Made a couple birdies on the 5 pars

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. -- Paul Goydos shot a 3-under 67 on Saturday to take a two-stroke lead into the final round of the PGA Tour Champions season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship.A day after opening with a 62 for a three-stroke lead, Goydos birdied the par-5 18th to reach 11-under 129 on Desert Mountain Clubs Cochise Course.I was happy. It was a nice day, Goydos said. The wind had calmed down a little bit. It seems to be windy in the morning here and better in the afternoon. Playing goods an advantage to some extent.Colin Montgomerie, third in the Charles Schwab Cup season standings, remained second. He followed his opening 65 with a 66. The Scot matched playing partner Goydos with a closing birdie.Points leader Bernhard Langer was third at 7 under after a 66.The top five in the standings -- Richmond winner Scott McCarron is second, followed by Montgomerie, Joe Durant and Miguel Angel Jimenez -- can take the season title with a victory Sunday. Durant was tied for 15th at 1 under after a 69, McCarron was tied for 17th at even par after a 71, and Jimenez was 22nd at 1 over after a 67.The season standings were reset after the event last week in Virginia, with Langers lead over McCarron reduced from 935,657 to 200. The tournament winner will receive $440,000 and 2,000 points.I just know that theres a bunch of possibilities, like we imagined, and here we are, Langer said. I guess right now if it stands like this, Monty and I would be tied and were going to a playoff. But will it stand that way tomorrow, nobody knows. I dont know. Its certainly exciting, its volatile. You know, it comes down the stretch. The 59-year-old German has a tour-high four victories and has wrapped up the season money title with $2,836,459. He won season titles in 2010, 2014 and 2015. Hes recovering from a left knee injury that forced him to withdraw from the playoff opener at Sherwood. Its been the same for the last two weeks, just being very careful walking, Langer said. I cant read my putts properly because I cant bend down the way I used to. But my goal is to finish the tournament, not to read my putts properly. Obviously, I would love to read them right, but if that would kick me out of the tournament, thats no good, so Ive just got to do what Ive got to do.Goydos is 24th in the standings. The two-time PGA Tour winner won the Dicks Sporting Goods Open in July for his third senior title. He shot a 59 in the PGA Tours 2010 John Deere Classic.Ive gotten off to good starts and, hopefully, I can continue that tomorrow, Goydos said. A little sloppy on the back nine, quite frankly. But Im Paul Goydos, Im not Bernhard Langer, as Ive proven time after time after time after time. But I hung in there pretty good. Made a couple birdies on the 5 pars, which is nice, and looking forward to playing tomorrow. CHASKA, Minn. -- A capsule look at Fridays matches from the Ryder Cup:FOURSOMESJordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, United States, def. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, Europe, 3 and 2.Something had to give in the first match of the Ryder Cup. Spieth and Reed were unbeaten in three matches at Gleneagles, while Rose and Stenson were undefeated in three matches at the last Ryder Cup. The Americans never trailed. Spieth made a birdie putt on No. 2 and never looked back. Europe won its only hole with a par on the ninth and had a chance to shift the momentum. Reed made a 12-foot par putt to halve the 10th and Spieth made a 10-foot birdie putt to halve the 11th and keep 2 up. Rose and Stenson made only one birdie.Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler, United States, def. Rory McIlroy and Andy Sullivan, Europe, 1 up.The Americans fell 2 down when Mickelson hit out-of-bounds on par-5 fifth and then had to play a right-handed shot next to a fence. They rallied with three straight birdies to take the lead at the turn. McIlroy answered with back-to-back birdies and Europe regained a 2-up lead with four holes to play. Sullivan chipped too strongly on the 15th leading to bogey. Mickelson stuffed a wedge to 5 feet on the 16th to square the match, and then Sullivan hit his tee shot in the water on the 17th. McIlroy had a chance to get a half-point, but missed a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th.Jimmy Walker and Zach Johnson, United States, def. Sergio Garcia and Martin Kaymer, Europe, 4 and 2.Europe led early when the Americans bogeyed the first two holes. Garcia and Kaymer both missed chances to build upon the lead, and it wound up costing them. Europe was 1 up through 11 holes when a bogey on the 12th squared the match. That was the start of five straight holes the Americans won -- three of them birdies -- to win the match and finish the morning with a sweep of the matches.Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar, United States, def. Thomas Pieters and Lee Westwood, 5 and 4.Johnson mostly carried the load for the Americans, and they got plenty of help from Westwood and Pieters, who bogeyed the first two holes to fall 2 down. Europe made double bogey on the seventh hole, and the Americans birdied the par-3 eighth to go 5 up, and the rout was on. Europe won only one hole, No. 9, when Kuchar missed a short par putt. Even so, it was a matter of Europe running out of holes in the shortest match of the morning.---FOURBALLSJustin Rose and Henrik Stenson, Europe, def. Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed, Unnited States, 5 and 4.ddddddddddddFresh off a 3-and-2 victory in foursomes, the Americans won the first hole when Reed made a 6-foot putt. The rest of the match was all redemption for Stenson and Rose. They ran off nine birdies over the next 13 holes. Spieth and Reed matched two of those birdies. They lost the lead with a bogey on the par-3 fourth, fell behind for the first time when Stenson birdied No. 7, and Europe was on its way. It was the first loss for Spieth and Reed in five matches together.Sergio Garcia and Rafa Cabrera Bello, Europe, def. J.B. Holmes and Ryan Moore, United States, 3 and 2.Cabrera Bello got his Ryder Cup debut off to a good start with a birdie on the opening hole, and the Spaniards never trailed. They raced out to a 4-up lead at the turn without much resistance from Holmes and Moore, who didnt make a single birdie on the front nine. The back nine began with matching birdies on the 10th and 11th, and then Moore came to life with a pair of 25-foot birdie putts to cut the deficit to 2 down. Both Americans missed the fairway on the par-5 16th. Garcia reached the front of the green in two, made birdie and the Americans couldnt match him.Brandt Snedeker and Brooks Koepka, United States, def. Martin Kaymer and Danny Willett, Europe, 5 and 4.Koepka began his Ryder Cup debut with a wedge he nearly holed, only for Willett to match his birdie with a 30-footer. That was a rare highlight for Europe. Snedeker was holing putts for birdies and pars, Koepka came up with the right shots and the Americans kept at least some red on the board in the afternoon. Kaymer didnt contribute a single birdie, which made it easier on the Americans. They were 5 up through 11 holes and matched pars the rest of the way.Rory McIlroy and Thomas Pieters, Europe, def. Dustin Johnson and Matt Kuchar, United States, 3 and 2.The Americans gave away the opening hole when Kuchar ran his birdie attempt 10 feet by, and Europe took it from there. McIlroy and Pieters ran off four straight birdies to build a 4-up lead through seven holes. Pieters made a 12-foot birdie on the par-3 13th after McIlroy went in the water to keep the lead at 4 up. Europe lost the 14th hole with a bogey, Johnson birdied the 15th and it looked as though this might be a tight finish. McIlroy, however, made a 20-foot eagle on the 16th, turning to bow twice to the American fans. ' ' '

HOOVER, Ala. -- People are talking about the Tennessee Volunteers as potential Southeastern Conference contenders again. After making steady progress the past three years under coach Butch Jones and bringing in three straight highly rated recruiting classes, the Vols are again regarded as legitimate contenders in the SEC Eastern Division. Many of the questions Jones and his players faced Tuesday at the leagues media days concerned dealing with hype and divisional front-runner status. Its a fairly dramatic change from a few years ago.I remember standing up here at the podium three short years ago, and the room was half filled and nobody was talking about Tennessee football, Jones said. Thats why you coach. Thats why you play, is to be in a program like the University of Tennessee where everybody is talking about you. Thats what you work for. Now its what you do with that opportunity.Tennessee hasnt won an SEC title since the 1998 national championship team. The Vols last played in the SEC title game in 2007, largely falling behind Georgia, Florida and other programs at times during that stretch.Jones has led the Vols on a climb from five wins to seven to nine during his first three years. They finished second in the East last season after blowing a fourth-quarter lead in a 28-27 loss to eventual division champion Florida. Now, quarterback Joshua Dobbs is trying to help continue the rise. Dobbs calls the hype outside noise but enjoys being part of Tennessees resurgence under Jones. The biggest thing it shows is just how far weve come from when guys like me, Cam (Sutton) and Jalen (Reeves-Maybin) were freshmen, Dobbs said. There wasnt much talk about Tennessee. Thats the biggest thing. Its good to see that Tennessee has definitely risen and Tennessee is back to where traditional Tennessee has been.Having an experienced quarterback in a league filled with unproven starters helps raise the expectations for Tennessee. The Vols have also got a 1,200-yard rusher in Jalen Hurd and defensive standouts like defensive end Derek Barnett and cornerback Cameron Sutton. Now, the challenge for the players is living up to the hype. So far, so good, according to Jones. They have not looked up, he said. They have not blinked, and theyve just been focused on their own self-determination, becoming a better football player and becoming a better football team. Thats really what you can do. Jacksons tribute to the man who rarely missed a track meet is to wear a hollowed-out silver bullet filled with his dads ashes when he competes.Hes always with me, Jackson said after winning his first-round heat Thursday at the U.S. Track and Field Trials. He was my No. 1 support team.Being here, in Eugene, is difficult for Jackson. His dad was at Hayward Field in 2012 at the trials, when Jackson finished a disappointing fourth -- one spot away from making the team -- and needed comforting. He was here last year, too, watching as Jackson earned a spot on the world squad headed to Beijing.Never missed a track meet since I was 6 years old, said Jackson, who was returning from Europe when he found out about his fathers death. He always gave me advice before a race. The message was typically the same.He would say, `Just go do what you do best, recounted Jackson, a bronze medalist at the 2008 Beeijing Games.ddddddddddddackson took that advice to heart, finishing a rain-soaked race in 49.91 seconds. Not bad considering the trouble he ran into earlier in the week. Just before trials, Jackson was opening a drawer when he cut his right finger on a blender blade. It made crouching down and placing his hand on the track at the starting line a little painful. But I dont need my finger to run, said the sprinter, who goes by the nickname Batman. These days, hes pushed in practice by training partner, Johnny Dutch, who also advanced. We make each other better. We complement each other, said the 33-year-old Jackson, who grew up in Miami and now lives in Raleigh, North Carolina. Hes a technician. Im a speedster. Its a great situation for both of us. It would be great if we both could make the team.If it happens, the silver bullet will be on the ride to Rio.He was a great father. He supported me in everything I did, from school to track and field, Jackson said. He was just always there. ' ' '

HOUSTON -- On a night when Jake Arrieta did not have his best stuff, the Chicago Cubs offense offered more than enough support.Jorge Soler and Addison Russell homered to lead Chicago to a 9-5 win over the Houston Astros on Sunday night, moving the Cubs closer to clinching the NL Central.Soler hit a solo home run as part of Chicagos four-run third, and Russell hit a two-run shot -- his 20th of the season -- in the fourth as the Cubs built a 9-0 lead.We came out ready to play, Chicago manager Joe Maddon said. We always do, but there was a little bit of juice about the whole game. Everybody was really raring to go and I thought we did a wonderful job of getting on top like we did.Chicago extended its lead in the NL Central to 16 games over St. Louis.I think it all comes back to our goals and what we need to accomplish as a team, Russell said. You come out with team wins like we did today, you saw the defense today and offense today and great pitching today as well. Keep that rolling, and we should be good.Houston fell 9 1/2 games behind Texas in the AL West and 3 1/2 back of Toronto and Baltimore in the wild-card race.Arrieta (17-6) allowed three runs on four hits with three strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. He leads the NL in wins, and his 11 road victories is tops in the majors.Arrieta said he was feeling ill starting Saturday, and he knew he would have to conserve his energy as best as he could. From the first pitch, I was pretty much running on empty today, Arrieta said. It was just one of those things where I went out there and gave everything I had and then just really ran out of everything completely in the sixth to try to battle through it.Arrieta cruised through the first five innings, allowing a solo home run to Jose Altuve in the fourth to go with a walk and single but ran into trouble in the sixth.Alex Bregman hit an RBI double and came around to score on Arrietas wild pitch to cut the lead to 9-3 in the sixth. The Astros then loaded the bases with one out, but Justin Grimm induced pop-ups by Evan Gattis and Colby Rasmus to end the threat.Disappointing obviously to fall that far behind, Houston manager A.J. Hinch said. We had a chance in the sixth, got a couple runs, could of had a bigger inning.Kris Bryant had an RBI double in the first, and David Ross had a sacrifice fly before Javier Baez scored on a wild pitch by Mike Fiers (10-7) in the second.Baez added an RBI single, and Albert Almora hit a two-run single as part of the third.Yulieski Gurriel and Gattis hit back-to-back solo home runs in the ninth as the Astros lost for the fourth time in five games.Fiers was tagged for seven runs on seven hits in 2 1/3 innings. The right-hander had won two straight and allowed three runs or fewer in each of his previous four starts.TRAINERS ROOMAstros: SS Carlos Correa was back in the lineup after missing four games with inflammation in his left shoulder. Correa singled in the second and was replaced by pinch hitter A.J. Reed in the fourth.WEB GEMSAlmora ended the fifth with a diving catch coming in on Marwin Gonzalezs falling pop fly. Jake Marisnick then robbed Almora of a hit in the eighth, coming in and making a diving grab on Almoras pop fly.RUSSELL IN ELITE COMPANYRussell became the second shortstop in Cubs history to have 20 home runs and 90 RBI joining Ernie Banks. His 90 RBI are the most by a Cubs shortstop since Banks 117 RBI in 1960.UP NEXTCubs: RHP Kyle Hendricks (14-7) starts the first game of a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday. Hendricks leads the majors with a 2.07 ERA. He has allowed three runs or fewer in 19 straight starts.Astros: RHP Doug Fister (12-11) starts the first of a three-game series against Texas on Monday. James Anderson says his position as Englands leading wicket-taker is yet to properly sink in after he collected his OBE. Anderson, who moved past Sir Ian Bothams previous milestone of 383 wickets last year, received his honour from the Prince of Wales during an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace on Thursday. The Lancashire seam bowler, who moved on to 433 Test wickets during the series win over South Africa, ranks seventh on the all-time list and needs only two more to move past Indian great Kapil Dev. Anderson said it was a surreal moment to be handed his honour But Anderson still finds it hard to come to terms with the success the sport has brought him.On breaking the record, Anderson said: It was a real surreal moment for me. Obviously Sir Ian Botham is someone Ive looked up to as a child growing up - and to pass him, it still hasnt sunk in yet. Anderson was presented with the honour by the Prince of Wales at an investiture ceremony Again, Im just lucky Ive managed to play the game long enough to be able to overtake him and contribute to English cricket as I have. Its amazing. I feel very fortunate to have made a career out of cricket. Opening day in the NFL saw Kansas City cornerback Marcus Peters raise a black-gloved fist during the national anthem, a protest amplified later Sunday when four Miami Dolphins kneeled on the sideline with hands on their hearts as The Star Spangled Banner played in Seattle. The protests were inspired by San Francisco backup quarterback Colin Kaepernick , the first NFL player who chose to sit and take a knee during the anthem in preseason games to call attention to what he termed the oppression of blacks and other minorities.I chose to get involved to see if I could create change, raise awareness. And I want to make it clear that there is no disrespect to the military or to police officers -- Im not about that. I love everyone, said Miamis Jelani Jenkins, one of the Dolphins to kneel. I would like to keep moving forward in the right direction with everybody: equal rights, equal opportunity. From my position, it doesnt seem that its happening. Thats why I took a stand. The Dolphins got support from one very important person -- their boss, team owner Stephen Ross.I dont think it was any lack of respect, Ross said. I think everybody here, our team and our whole organization, respects the flag and what it stands for, the soldiers and everything. These guys are really making a conversation of something thats a very important topic in this country and Im 100 percent supportive of them.Peters gesture was the only one visible throughout the early games Sunday, as the anthems took on more significance because of the 15th anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks.I come from a majority black community from Oakland, California ... so the struggle, I seen it, Peters said after the Chiefs beat San Diego 33-27 in overtime. I still have some family in the struggle. All Im saying is we want to educate those, the youth thats coming up.The four Miami players -- Arian Foster, Michael Thomas, Jenkins and Kenny Stills -- registered their protest shortly before kickoff. The four players stood while President Barack Obamas message played regarding the 15th anniversary of 9/11 before taking a knee . All four stood at the conclusion of the anthem. If its about the knee that people are upset about, every Sunday people of faith take a knee to give thanks to their lord and savior, whatever faith or religion that they are, Foster said. Its not about a knee, its not about the (symbolism), its about the message. They say its not the time to do this, but when is the time?Several teams, including the Chiefs and Seahawks, saw their players link arms during the aanthem.dddddddddddd Peters, the 2015 defensive rookie of the year, was the last person in the Chiefs line and had his arm free to raise it.He spoke up about something he felt he needed to speak up about, Peters said last week. I salute him for that.Broncos linebacker Brandon Marshall , a teammate of Kaepernicks in college at Nevada, took a knee during the anthem on Thursday night.NFL commissioner Roger Goodell weighed in on Kaepernicks protest last week as well, saying, I dont necessarily agree with what hes doing.Seattles locker room was engaged in a lengthy discussion over the past few weeks about what type of message to send. The players enlisted coach Pete Carroll in the discussions almost from the start, and brought Dr. Harry Edwards to help direct the conversations.Gestures mean nothing without follow through. Thats what Harry Edwards said and thats what I agree with, Seattle cornerback Richard Sherman said. People get confused that you have to go out there and put on a show and make this gesture and make people aware of it, and were more about action.Wide receiver Doug Baldwin, who became a default spokesman for Seattles actions, said the players are working to schedule a meeting with the mayor of Seattle and local law enforcement. We know that there has to be change and progress, Baldwin said. Change is inevitable. Change will always happen. But you got to apply direction to change, and thats when its progress. And so right now what were doing as a team, we have a follow through.A taped message from Presidents Obama and George W. Bush were played at each stadium. Bush attended the Giants-Cowboys match in Arlington, Texas, while Vice President Joe Biden was in Philadelphia for Browns-Eagles.Peters gesture was also a tribute of sorts to U.S. sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos, who won the gold and bronze medals, respectively, in the 200-meter race at the 1968 Olympics. Both then appeared on the medal stands with raised, black-gloved fists throughout the U.S. national anthem in what they called a human rights salute. And in the night game, New Englands Martellus Bennett and Devin McCourty both held up their right arms. Teammate Danny Amendola was seen clutching the American flag unfurled on the field in Arizona. The International Olympic Committee ordered Smith and Carlos expelled from the games because of the protest.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '

CALGARY, Alberta -- Johnny Gaudreau had a goal and an assist in his return from a broken finger, and the Calgary Flames scored five times in a 6:04 span of the second period to rout the Anaheim Ducks 8-3 on Sunday night. It was a surprise when it was revealed in the morning that Gaudreau would be back in the lineup less than three weeks after surgery that was expected to keep him out four to six weeks. On the first shot of his first shift, he took a drop pass from Sam Bennett and whipped a shot past Jonathan Bernier at 2:09 to make it 1-0.Sixth in the NHL in scoring last season, Gaudreau started off slowly this season with two goals in 14 games. But he was just beginning to heat up with three goals in three games when a slash from Eric Staal against Minnesota on Nov. 15 sidelined him for 10 games.Bennett and Alex Chiasson also had big nights offensively with a goal and two assists apiece. Also scoring for Calgary (13-13-2) were Troy Brouwer, Matt Stajan, Dougie Hamilton, Sean Monahan and Mark Giordano. The Flames finished a 3-0 homestand.Ryan Kesler had two goals and Logan Shaw also scored for Anaheim (12-9-5), which trailed 8-1 late in the third. Next, the Ducks return home after a 1-1-1 trip through Western Canada. It was 1-all when Calgary scored a rare power-play goal at home at 11:28 of the second, touching off a stretch of five goals on six shots against Bernier.Calgary was 2 for 45 on the power play at the Saddledome when Brouwer tipped in Monahans shot.Chiasson shoveled in Bennetts rebound less than a minute later and 35 seconds after that, with the crowd still buzzing, Stajan deflected in Dennis Widemans slap shot.Back on the man advantage, the Flames made it two straight conversions when Bennett redirected in Mikael Backlunds pass at 16:37. Hamilton completed the second-period barrage 55 seconds later by ripping a slap shot into the top corner.Monahan and Giordano made it 8-1 with third-period goals before Kesler and Shaw scored late goals for the Ducks.Starting for the 10th time in the last 12 games, Chad Johnson made 30 stops to improve to 8-2-0 during that span. He is 10-4-1 this season.Bernier, who went the distance, finished with 17 saves. His record fell to 4-2-1.Game notes It was the most goals Calgary has scored since winning 8-1 over Edmonton on March 22, 2014. ... Bennett was back at center after playing left wing during Gaudreaus absence. ... Micheal Ferland (upper body) did not return after leaving in the first period. He took only one more shift after an earlier fight with Kevin Bieksa. ... Lance Bouma (upper body) skated without a non-contact jersey Sunday and is nearing a return. He has missed 15 games.UP NEXTDucks: Host the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday night.Flames: Play at the Dallas Stars on Tuesday night. Eric Dier Jersey . The Islanders dealt Thomas Vanek to the Montreal Canadiens after less than a year on Long Island. Meanwhile, the Oilers dealt long-time sniper Ales hemsky to the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday for a fifth-round pick in 2014 and a third-rounder in 2015. Harry Kane England Jersey . -- Anaheim Ducks defenceman Luca Sbisa will be out at least six weeks with a torn tendon in his right hand. http://www.englandsoccerpro.com/Jesse-Lingard-England-Jersey/ . -- If Henry Burris has his way, he will be the starting quarterback to lead the Hamilton Tiger-Cats back to the Grey Cup next year. Jack Butland England Jersey . Wilson hit Schenn from behind during Tuesday nights game in Philadelphia, earning a five-minute major for charging and a game misconduct. He has a phone hearing with the department of player safety, which limits any potential suspension to five or fewer games. David Beckham Jersey . The catch: It needs a lot of money, and it needs it fast.Playing two games in one night has handed Raymond van Barneveld a final lifeline to stay alive in the Premier League, Wayne Mardle believes. The maverick Dutchman is languishing in seventh in the eight-man table, six points off the pace for a play-off berth. But two games on Thursday in Belfast, live on Sky Sports, could yield four points and put Barney back in the hunt.Does Mardle back Barney? Heres his predictions... Robert Thornton v Peter WrightI loved the way Robert played last week. We thought hed be more relaxed after avoiding elimination and it proved the case against Michael van Gerwen. Peter Wright displays his sharp-shooting with a 161 checkout Thornton isnt going to get beaten 7-0 anymore, hes had a couple of those earlier this season but hes far too good for that.I think hell play well again but Wright is a better player. Wright has been putting himself in some really good positions without getting as many points as he should. Sky Live: PL Darts Everything you need to know about arrows in Belfast Prediction: I think Wright wins but, again, Thornton will be a tough nut to crack. Im going for 7-5 to Wright. (Wright to win 7-5 is 9/2 with Sky Bet)Raymond van Barneveld v Phil TaylorThis is a very important night for Raymond because, if he can nick four points, hes back in the mix. Hes got a lifeline. If he doesnt get all four points, hes out of it. He just cant afford to lose one of them because other players are picking up points. Draws are no good to Raymond. A classic 2007 Premier League clash between Taylor and Barney Phil is playing miles better than Raymond, although - I say this every week - we dont know what Barney will do and he doesnt know himself. He played brilliantly against Van Gerwen but poorly the next.Last week, Phil played James Wade and it was a poor game. But, there wasnt any point where it appeared like Wade had a chance of winning. Phil just kept him at arms length.Youd still go and see Pete Sampras v Andre Agassi, wouldnt you? I still want to see Barney v Phil, I want to watch a cracker.Prediction: Barney will play well but Phil will win, because Phil keeps finding a way to win. Hes confident and has an ability to read his opponent. (Taylor to win and score more 180s than van Barneveld is 2/1 with Sky Bet).James Wade v Adrian LewisThis is a massive game because only one of them, maximum, can make the play-offs. They cant lose to each other, then they need to beat Anderson. This is a must-not-lose match for both of them. Adrian Lewis edged a neck-and-neck leg to beat James Wade earlier this season Adrian has found it tough, he wasnt well last week and pulled out of an event at the weekend.dddddddddddd I know he wasnt well over the weekend. Sometimes that doesnt matter but sometimes it does. This is close to call so youve got to go with the information that youve collated.Prediction: If I was going to have a punt, which Im not, then Wade is a good bet (Wade to win is a 15/8 chance with a narrow 7-4 win a tasty 7/1).Michael van Gerwen v Gary AndersonAnderson isnt guaranteed a play-off place yet - I said earlier this year that theres not four players better than Anderson. Well, last year there werent four players better than Taylor but he didnt make the play-offs, so my theory is out the window!Michael is a certainty for the play-offs - hes too good, and hes not losing games. Even when he doesnt win, he has chances to win. Hes looking anything but dodgy. Michael van Gerwen beat Gary Anderson in Newcastle this season I just cant read Anderson but Ill never back against him because hes too capable. Youve got to feel that Michael has the upper hand. Hes playing better and hes the odds-on favourite for a reason, because of his recent form. But Gary finds a way against Michael, and that sticks in the back of my head. Like when Barney plays Van Gerwen, its horses for courses. Certain players love playing others, and I think Gary loves playing Michael.Prediction: I think Van Gerwen will win 7-5 in a last-leg thriller. (Van Gerwen to win 7-5 is 7/1 with Sky Bet)Raymond van Barneveld v Robert ThorntonBarney is one of these players that, if hes got a chance to win, you can tell by his body language that he fancies it. When he plays Van Gerwen he says : You think youre good? Prove how good you are. Raymond van Barneveld finished on the bullseye for this superb 161 checkout When the games are not glamorous he doesnt fancy it. If he loses to Phil hell have nothing to play for. I think Robert just wants to win.Prediction: I think Robert will win - Id rather back someone who I know is 100 per cent going to try. I think Robert cares more than Raymond. (Thornton to beat van Barneveld is 2/1 with Sky Bet).Watch Premier League Darts from Belfast on Thursday, live on Sky Sports 1 HD at 7pm. Also See: Night 11 preview Talking points ' ' '

ATHENS, Ga. --- Georgia soccer (4-9-1, 1-6) defeated the LSU Tigers (6-9, 1-6), 3-0, for the Bulldogs first Southeastern Conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon at the Turner Soccer Complex. The shutout victory is Georgia goalkeeper Louise Hogrells third of the season with the Asa, Sweden native making seven saves in the game. The idea was to put pressure on them early and provide as much offensive pressure as we could, Georgia head coach Billy Lesesne said. We went back to two forwards instead of just one like we have been playing with. We have worked so hard and just come up a little short, even when we have played really well. Today we finished those chances, and hopefully that will give us confidence and momentum moving forward.Georgia came out firing. Lauren Tanner had the Bulldogs first look on goal as her shot hit the post and Marion Crowder shot the rebound ball high over the net.Crowder was able to capitalize on her next look to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 in the 7th minute of action with a cross in the box from Kelsey Killean. This marks Crowders sixth goal of the season.LSU had a chance to even the score in the 17th minute, but Jorian Baucom sent the ball right into the hands of Hogrell for the save.Georgia extended its lead in the 19th minute when a corner kick from Taylor Donohue set Becca Rasmussen up for the touch to send the ball through the net.Georgia carried the 2-0 lead into the locker room at halftime. The Bulldogs kept their first half momentum through the next 45 minutes. Georgia sealed the victory in the 57th minute of play as Killean scored off a perfect cross from Tanner.Georgia led LSU in shots (25-11) during the 3-0 victory over the Tigers.Weve been struggling with playing a full 90 minutes, but today we just really put it all together, Crowder said. We played like it was 0-0 even when we were winning. Regardless of the first half of our season, we came out today and played our best. The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, Oct. 13 as the team travels to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at 7 p.m. Akiem Hicks Jersey . -- The St. Johns IceCaps weathered a wild first period with the help of goaltender Jussi Olkinuora, before finding offensive inroads in the second. Walter Payton Bears Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. http://www.chicagobearfootballauthentic.com/authentic-brian-urlacher-bears-jersey/ . Aaron Harrison scored a 22 points for Kentucky (6-1), which has won four in a row following a Nov. 12 loss to current No. 1 Michigan State. Julius Randle overcame a scoreless first half and added his sixth double-double in as many games with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Richard Dent Bears Jersey . - Oakland Raiders running back Rashad Jennings was speaking to a group of local high school students earlier this week when the conversation turned to the importance of being prepared when opportunities in life arise. Riley Ridley Jersey . However, he did make them miss him a little less. Cundiff, who had the unenviable job of replacing Dawson last season, agreed Thursday to a one-year, $1. Victor Hedman followed Steven Stamkos lead and made this one of the best weeks in Tampa Bay Lightning history. Two days after Stamkos decided to return to Tampa Bay, Hedman signed a $63 million, eight-year extension that keeps the No. 1 defenseman around through the 2024-25 season.Like Stamkos did on his $68 million, eight-year deal, Hedman took less money than he probably could have at a salary-cap hit of $7.875 million in the hopes of keeping the Lightning core together to contend for the Stanley Cup for many more seasons. We want to keep a competitive group and have a competitive team, Hedman said on a conference call Friday. For us moving forward, its going to be important for everyone to buy into that, obviously. For me and Stammer, we want to win together and that was obviously a big goal that we have is to go all the way together with Tampa. The Lightning reached the Stanley Cup Final in 2015 and Eastern Conference final in 2016 thanks in large part to Hedman, the 6-foot-6 Swede with the big shot, puck-moving ability and shutdown prowess. The 25-year-old was in the running for the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP when Tampa Bay lost to the Chicago Blackhawks in the final. In 473 games, the 25-year-old has 49 goals and 180 assists. Last season he had 10 goals and 37 assists. But the Hedman and Stamkos contracts are not about what theyve done in seven years together with the Lightning. but rather what they have the potential to do.The possibility of being a Cup contender for almost a decade with Stamkos and Hedman leading the way is why the captain suggested teammates take less than the maximum to win.The guys have to understand that in order to keep us all together, they have to realize the situation with the salary cap, Stamkos said Thursday. That was something that I truly considered in signing the deal that I did with Tampa and realizing the potential we have and knowing that if we did ultimately want to stay together that theres going to be some sacrifices from both sides.Hedman also referenced sacrifice in talking about Tampa Bays long-range plan. Restricted free agent forwards Nikita Kucherov, Alex Killorn and Vladislav Namestnikov and defenseman Nikita Nesterov all need contracts thiis summer, and those are up next for general manager Steve Yzerman.dddddddddddd.The Lightning took care of another order of business Friday in signing goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy to a $10.5 million, three-year extension. The 21-year-old will count $3.5 million against the cap when his extension kicks in for the 2017-18 season. The contract could mean the end of Ben Bishops time in Tampa Bay at least by the end of next season when the Las Vegas expansion draft occurs.I know I have to make a decision at some point, Yzerman said. If one of these two guys is available theyre going to get claimed.Worrying about what to do with Bishop is a problem for another day. The Lightning feel good about Vasilevskiy assuming the starting role whenever hes given it, and he could soon be a valuable part of the core.I dont know if theres been a bigger goalie talent Ive seen, Hedman said. Vasy has showed throughout the regular season and in the playoffs when Bish went down how good of a goalie he is.The Lightning have shown they can win in front of Bishop or Vasilevskiy because of Hedman, defensive partner Anton Stralman, Stamkos and the Triplets -Kucherov, Tyler Johnson and Ondrej Palat. With Stamkos and Hedman set to play at least eight more years together, Yzerman cant help but be happy while also realizing the salary cap limits what he can do.Stammer and Victor, these are the two cornerstones. ... A good couple of days for the organization, Yzerman said. Between now and the start of 17-18 if were going to sign all the players, were going to have to make some changes. To what extent Im not sure. But were not going to be able to simply sign every single guy and keep the exact same group together. Its not possible.Players know that, but in order to try to bring the Cup back to Hockey Bay, itll be a team effort.Im hopeful that we can ultimately keep as many guys as possible, Stamkos said. I understand that you cant keep everyone, but I do believe that we have a great nucleus in Tampa that is built to win for years.---Follow Stephen Whyno on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/SWhyno . The Big 12 board of directors meets Monday in Dallas and the topic of expansion will be addressed. Not necessarily decided, but definitely addressed.Maybe after three months of vetting, analyzing and interviewing potential new members the presidents and chancellors will decide the Big 12 Conference should add schools. Maybe they will even decide which schools to add.Or maybe they will decide 10 members are enough for the smallest Power Five conference and stick with what they have.Or maybe they will decide not to decide and keep college footballs never-ending story going. It is impossible to know which way this will go, but news reports from Big 12 country over the last month suggest the conference has cooled on the idea of expansion. The only public statements that provide a hint at which way the Big 12 is leaning have come from Oklahoma President David Boren, who once called the conference psychologically disadvantaged by having only 10 members.First, Boren said expansion should not be considered a given. Then, responding to reports citing unidentified sources that he had changed his position, Boren released a noncommittal statement in late September.I do not know where the speculation came from, but Oklahoma has not yet taken a position on expansion, he said.Consultants have provided data to conference leaders showing expansion could increase the Big 12s chances of reaching the playoff and the bottom lines of its members. The Big 12s television contracts with ESPN and Fox call for the networks to provide increases to cover the addition of new members. So two new schools would mean an extra $50 million or so each year through 2025.The new members would, as is standard, receive a partial share of conference revenue for the first three or four seasons in the league. The old members would split the rest.More money and a better chance to make it to the playoff. So why wouldnt the Big 12 expand?THE CHOICESBig 12 officials held face-to-face interviews with 11 schools during September: Air Force, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Colorado State, Connecticut, Houston, Rice, South Florida, SMU and Tulane.None is an obvious choice.- BYU has had the most football success and is a national brand, but the Cougars other sports dont play on Sundays and the schools honor code has received scrutiny from LGBT advocacy groups.- Houston received an endorsement from the governor of Texas and some public support from the University of Texas, but promoting an in-state competitor could make winning and recruiting more difficult for current members.- Cincinnati, South Florida and Central Florida provide new media markets and recruiting territory, but limited history of success on the field. And those media markets dont have as much impact for a conference that is not likely to follow-up expansion with its own television network.- Colorado State would put the Big 12 back in a state that is home to many of its schools alumni, but it is not the flagship university of that state.- Connecticut has a national brand, but its for basketball.- Football-only membership probably makes the most sense for Air Force. Maybe for BYU, too. But is that worth it?- Rice, SMU and Tulane have strong academic profiles, but it is highly questionable whether they could compete in football.CONSENSUSAny decision would require agreement from eight of the Big 12s 10 presidents, though do not be surprised if the conference publicly claims unanimity about whatever is decided. So first eight of the 10 schools would have to agree on expanding. Then eight of the 10 would have to agree on whom to invite. If you have followed the Big 12, consensus has not been its strong suit.DILUTIONThe Big Ten is experiencing this now. The addition of Maryland and Rutgers means less opportunity for Nebraska, Iowa and Wisconsin to play Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State.Thats not great, but the Big Ten offset that with the financial gains. Expanding the conferences footprint to the Northeast corridor boosted the value of the Big Tens cable network and increased its exposure into a highly populated area where lots of its alumni live. The addition of two more teams to the Big 12 would mean fewer games against Oklahoma and Texas for many of the current members, but without the ancillary benefits because the Big 12 wont be getting a cable network.THE BIG 12 DIDNT REALLY WANT TO DO THIS IN THE FIRST PLACEIn June, the Big 12 announced it was paying out $30 million apiece to its members and the expansion talk seemed to be put to rest.In late July, Commissioner Bob Bowlsby and Boren emerged from a CEO meeting and announced the conference would explore expansion, making the league again seem unstable. What changed? The Atlantic Coast Conference announced with ESPN that it would start a network and extend its TV contract and the grant of rights that helps bind the schools through 2035. Seeing the ACC strengthen its position, along with having the Big 12s pro rata deal clearly spelled out, moved the Big 12 presidents to do a deep dive on expansion.LONG-TERM FLEXIBILITYStanding pat. Dream big.Maybe the ACC network is a dud and six years from now Florida State and Clemson are pondering how to escape that grant of rights. Maybe Pac-12 falls behind the rest of the Power Five and its members look at the Big 12 as more fertile territory.MONEYESPN and Fox were reportedly not thrilled about the idea of paying for a bigger Big 12. Would the networks be willing to pay the Big 12 a smaller amount to stand pat in return for an extended contract and grant of rights?CHAMPIONSHIP GAMERegardless of expansion, the Big 12 has plans to bring back its football championship next year. So theres more new revenue and another game for the College Football Playoff committee to consider.OKLAHOMA AND TEXASUltimately, the long-term stability of the Big 12 is predicated on Texas and Oklahoma happily remaining in the conference. At some point the Longhorns and Sooners have to decide if they want to be the most powerful members of the Big 12 or just another member of another conference. And adding teams to the Big 12 now doesnt change that.---Follow Ralph D. Russo at www.Twitter.com/ralphDrussoAP Yannick Carrasco Jersey . BYU trailed 7-3 at halftime but scored touchdowns on all four of its second-half possessions -- not including its final drive, which consisted only of kneel-downs.Hills 4-yard touchdown pass to Colby Pearson put the Cougars ahead, and he then added a 12-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter.Michigan State has lost three in a row for the first time since early in the 2009 season. The Spartans pulled starting quarterback Tyler OConnor in the fourth quarter and replaced him with Damion Terry. Michigan State began to move the ball on Terrys first drive, but an interception by Michael Davis ended that possession.Spartans coach Mark Dantonio said he didnt blame OConnor for the loss, but he did not commit to any quarterback as the starter going forward. If youre not productive and youve got seven points on the board, then youve got to make a change for the sake of change, Dantonio said. I dont think he was playing that badly.Williams, who rushed for 286 yards in a win over Toledo the previous week, added an 8-yard touchdown run to make it 24-7. After Terry scored on a 1-yard sneak, Williams broke free for a 62-yard run on BYUs ensuing drive. His 11-yard TD run made it 31-14.ddddddddddddBYU had 78 offensive plays to Michigan States 53.TAKEAWAYSBYU: For the first time all season, the Cougars played in a blowout -- and they were on the right side of it. They also have two-point wins over Arizona and Toledo, as well as three-point losses to UCLA and West Virginia and a one-point loss to Utah.Having all those close games earlier paid off this week, coach Kalani Sitake said. Having our guys keep fighting and keep believing in what we are doingMICHIGAN STATE: Things have gone from bad to worse for the Spartans, who were already in trouble after losing to Wisconsin and Indiana. With games against Michigan and Ohio State still to come, Michigan State needs to snap out of this slump or it cant even be assured of going to a bowl.As I told our football team after the game, I believe this program has been built on a good, solid foundation. Its taken nine years to do that, Dantonio said. The ride up the mountains very difficult at times, and that ride down sometimes is very quick.BOGGED DOWNMichigan State drove 72 yards in 15 plays on its first possession, taking a 7-0 lead on an 8-yard touchdown run by Gerald Holmes. The Spartans managed only 31 yards total on their next five drives before OConnor was pulled. Its 10 guys doing things right, not 11, OConnor said. And its someone different every time, I think, and its just overall chemistry.KEEPING IT GOINGPart of the reason BYU had such a big advantage in total plays was because the Cougars went 10 of 16 on third down. BYU was 6 of 7 in the second half.UP NEXTBYU: The Cougars return home to face Mississippi State on Friday night.MICHIGAN STATE: The reeling Spartans resume Big Ten play with their Homecoming game against Northwestern on Saturday.---Follow Noah Trister at www.Twitter.com/noahtrister ' ' '

MOSCOW, Idaho -- Aaron Duckworth ran for 108 yards and two touchdowns to help Idaho stave off a second-half charge from Montana State, 20-17, in the season opener for each team on Thursday night. Both of Duckworths scoring runs came in the first quarter, including a 43-yarder which gave the Vandals a 10-7 lead -- which they held the rest of the night.Matt Linehan threw for 128 yards and Austin Rehkow kicked field goals of 44 and 34 yards for the Vandals. The Bobcats Chad Newell ran for 105 yards and a touchdown, and Tyler Bruggman threw for 191 yards and a 12-yard scoring toss to Justin Paige.Montana State cut Idahos advantage to 20-17 with 9:22 left after a 3-yard TD run by Newell. After stopping the Vandals on fourth-and-1 with 5:21 remaining the Bobcats had a final opportunity to win it, but went three-and-out. Jackson matched his career high with 23 points on 10-of-14

We are a little more than two weeks from the final College Football Playoff rankings and the semifinal announcements.Dinich projects the committees top sixTen of the committees top 11 teams won this week, the exception being Louisville, so there shouldnt be too much of a shakeup in the top six. Michigan might drop because of a lackluster passing game under John OKorn, and Oklahoma still has some work to do. Heres an updated projection of what the committee might do:1. Alabama2. Ohio State3. Clemson4. Michigan5. Washington6. WisconsinSooners still have work to doThe easiest declaration in the Big 12 is that West Virginia is out, done, kaput. Its more complicated with Oklahoma, which earned its first statement win -- and got it in Morgantown. The Sooners still need help, though -- lots of it -- because of a résumé that has just one win against a top 25 team and just three wins against teams with record above .500 (Kansas State, Baylor and now West Virginia). Five of OUs nine wins have come against teams with at least six losses. So what has to happen?OU first needs to beat Oklahoma State on Dec. 3. The Sooners would increase their legitimacy in the debate if Michigan loses, because if the Wolverines win out and win the Big Ten, youre looking at a top four that starts with Alabama, Clemson and Michigan. The debate would then boil down to Oklahoma and Washington. Thats why if Washington loses, it also helps, because Oklahoma might have a better chance when evaluated against a two-loss Colorado Pac-12 champ. Oklahoma could also make a case against a two-loss Penn State team, but would likely lose that résumé test, too, because Penn States win over No. 2 Ohio State still trumps anything the Sooners have done. OU isnt done yet, but it remains a long shot in the big picture.Pac-12 takes playoff hitThe entire Pac-12 took a hit when both No. 12 Utah and No. 22 Washington State lost. Utahs loss hurts Washingtons résumé, as a road win against Utah is the Huskies best win. With Washington States loss, its possible the Cougars drop out of the CFP top 25 entirely. Thats not good for Washington, which needs as many ranked opponents as it can get down the stretch. In spite of the loss to Colorado, Washington State can win the North if it wins the Apple Cup. That would leave Colorado as the leagues best shot at the CFP, but it would be playing a team it already beat in the conference championship game. The better scenario for Colorado is for Washington to win the North.Michigan wins OKorns debut, but tougher challenge awaitsThis was the selection committees first chance to see if Michigan looks like a top-four team with backup quarterback John OKorn, and in spite of the win over Indiana, that remains debatable. Michigans passing game struggled immensely, as OKorn completed just seven of 16 passes for 59 yards, and the Wolverines put the game in the hands of DeVeon Smith, who had 158 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan cant remain one-dimensional at Ohio State next week or in the Big Ten championship game, should it win the East. That is enough to give the committee pause, and it could drop Michigan to the No. 4 spot behind Clemson this week. The Wolverines should stay in the top four, however, thanks to wins over Colorado, Penn State and Wisconsin. Ohio State should remain ranked ahead of Michigan, partly because the Buckeyes have a better loss (to a ranked Penn State team) than the Wolverines loss to Iowa. It should be noted in the committee meeting room, though, that Michigan and Ohio State both played in East Lansing, and the Wolverines won in more impressive fashion.Ohio State wobbles but keeps playoff hopes aliveNo. 2 Ohio State escaped East Lansing with a 17-16 win and should remain in the committees top four, but such a close game against a 3-7 team opens the door to debate whether the Buckeyes are the No. 2 team in the country. The close win also calls into question whether the Buckeyes would deserve to stay in the top four without winning the Big Ten East division. Remember, in order for a team that doesnt win its conference championship to go to a semifinal, it must unequivocally be one of the four best teams in the country. There must be no doubt among the 12 committee members that Ohio State is better than another Power 5 conference champion. For much of the game Saturday, there was doubt as to whether the Buckeyes are better than Michigan State. Also in the Big Ten, Wisconsin trounced Purdue 49-20 but needed Nebraska (and Minnesota) to lose to clinch the Big Tens West division. The Huskers thoroughly beat the Terps, so the Badgers celebration must remain on hold, though they should remain the Big Tens top two-loss team.Gundy states his case for Oklahoma StateThe No. 11 Cowboys beat TCU 31-6 to improve to 9-2 and set up a potentially monumental Bedlam showdown with Oklahoma on Dec. 3. But coach Mike Gundy isnt looking at his team as a 9-2 squad. To him, its 10-1.After the TCU win, Gundy reflected on his teams?controversial Week 2 loss to Central Michigan, in which on-field and replay officials admitted to an error that prolonged the game and allowed the Chippewas to complete a last-second Hail Mary.Nobody will ever convince me that we didnt get the win, Gundy said.CFP selection committee chair Kirby Hocutt has said his group is considering the game a loss for the Cowboys, but Gundy isnt sure they feel that way.I know Kirby had mentioned that the committee feels a certain way about that game, Gundy said. I think Kirbys playing poker and that they see us as a 10-win team. Thats just my opinion.Playoff impact gamesNo. 2 Ohio State 17, Michigan State 16No. 7 Wisconsin 49, Purdue 20No. 11 Oklahoma State 31, TCU 6No. 3 Michigan 20, Indiana 10No. 4 Clemson 35, Wake Forest 13No. 1 Alabama 31, Chattanooga 3No. 8 Penn State 39, Rutgers 0No. 9 Oklahoma 56, No. 14 West Virginia 28What Louisvilles loss meansAfter a wild Saturday filled with upsets, the ripple effect in the College Football Playoff continued Thursday, when No. 5 Louisville was thoroughly outplayed by Houston in a 36-10 loss that sent reverberations throughout the selection committees Top 25. He earned his way back by being active and getting three wins in a row, Moretti said. Robb is a guy who really, really wants this opportunity to fight for the No. 1 position. The Marriaga-Robb winner probably will not get the title fight in the next bout because the mandatory title fight wont be due yet.Whether its the next fight or not, this fight is on national TV, and it will create some interest in the winner fighting the Valdez-Rueda winner, Moretti said. People will see it, and you build up the title fight when it is due. ' ' '

He had been acquired from the Angels at the trade deadline but has struggled. Cahill threw five shutout innings, drove in a run and earned the win in the Cubs 4-0 win.La Stella, 27, went home to New Jersey instead of reporting to Iowa after being optioned. A valuable role player, he was caught in a numbers game but was likely to return. He was batting .295 in 51 games for the Cubs.La Stella stressed there is no animosity between him and the Cubs and that his decision was just what he felt was best for himself. Its a reflection of where I am in my life and my career, La Stella said. I told them, I know you have a business decision to make. I completely understand where theyre coming from. I dont fault them for making that choice one bit. ATHENS, Ga. -- Mark Fox and his players understand another NIT berth wont be enough for this Georgia team.Fox has built a winning program with three straight 20-win seasons and three straight winning records in Southeastern Conference games. But his only NCAA Tournament appearances with Georgia came in 2011 and 2015. He has sufficient talent and depth on his roster to add a 2017 NCAA berth to that list.No one rises to low expectations, Fox said. I think you should expect yourself to be successful. ... We really dont spend a lot of time on outside opinions, but I think internally these kids expect to have a solid team. Thats a good attitude to have in your locker room.Asked about Fox after a 20-14 finish and second-round NIT loss last season, athletic director Greg McGarity said he remained confident the program was on the rise under the coach. Otherwise there would be a different story line, McGarity said.Georgia was picked fourth in the SEC this month by a media panel, and senior guard J.J. Frazier made the preseason All-SEC team. Frazier is the SECs leading returning scorer, at 16.9 points per game. Forward Yante Maten averaged 16.5 points. Matens 8.0 rebounds per game rank second among the leagues returning players.Thats a nice foundation for a team which must replace longtime starters Charles Mann and Kenny Gaines.Fraziers leadership adds strength to that foundation. We probably have the best leadership weve had since Ive been at Georgia, Fox said. J.J. Frazier is a natural leader. I think hes now experienced enough to know exactly what we want to do. Usually what he says is what they need to hear. He really cares about winning and playing the game the right way.---Some other things to know about Georgias 2016-17 season:RUST REMOVED: After missing last season which recovering froom an Achilles tendon injury, guard Juwan Parker used Georgias preseason summer tour of Spain to regain his game form.dddddddddddd He was able to knock some rust off, Fox said. Parker earned a starting job two years ago before the injury, and could be the favorite to start on the wing this season.LANDERS KEYS: Forwards Derek Ogbeide (6-8, 245) and Mike Edwards (6-9, 225) showed potential but lacked consistency as freshmen last season. Ogbeide, a strong rebounder, ended the season as a starter. Fox said former Georgia womens coach Andy Landers says the sophomores are his possible keys to the season. Fox said his good friend Landers has attended a couple practices and even joined the trip to Spain. Andy keeps saying if those guys who were freshmen last year take a step forward, you guys have a chance to have a very good team, Fox said. I think theres a lot of truth to that.MORE THAN A SHOOTER: Frazier is best known as a 3-point shooter, a skill which overshadows his all-around play. He ranked among the SECs top 10 leaders in eight categories last season, the most of any player, including assists, steals and free throws. Listed at 5-10, 155 pounds, Frazier was third on the team with 4.6 rebounds per game.NOT FORGOTTEN: Georgia returns eight of its top 10 scorers from last season, but the missing two were important. Gaines and Mann combined to average 24.1 points last season. I think we lost a lot more than people realize, Fox said.BARCELONA BULLDOGS: Georgia was 3-0 on its Spain trip. Fox said the practice time was valuable but also important was the camaraderie that is established or strengthened.---Online:AP College Basketball: www.collegebasketball.ap.org ' ' '
