nore their role in perpetuating a culture

A look at whats happening all around the majors Sunday:---ARMED AND READYDodgers ace Clayton Kershaw starts Game 2 of the NL Championship Series against the Cubs after pitching in all three Division Series wins versus Washington. That included a two-out save in the decisive Game 5 on Thursday night, two days after he threw 110 pitches in Game 4 on short rest.I feel fine, Kershaw said Saturday . I feel good. Im excited. Its been a little bit since we got to do this, and Wrigley Field, its going to be pretty exciting. The three-time Cy Young Award winner hasnt faced Chicago this year. He is 3-6 with a 4.79 ERA in 16 career playoff games, including 12 starts.ALL CLEARKershaws mound opponent, Kyle Hendricks, also was a bit of a question mark before the Cubs committed to starting him in Game 2. Hendricks left his Division Series start against San Francisco after taking a line drive off his right forearm but felt fine after a bullpen session Thursday. The right-hander went 16-8 with a major league-best 2.13 ERA this season.HEALING WELLIts a day off in the AL Championship Series as the teams head to Toronto after Cleveland won a pair of low-scoring games at home. Trevor Bauer is supposed to pitch Game 3 for the Indians on Monday night, though his scheduled start isnt as concrete as they might like. The right-hander was pushed back from Saturdays Game 2 after cutting his right pinkie Thursday while repairing one of the drones he enjoys flying as a hobby. And although Bauer has thrown twice since, manager Terry Francona is concerned about the wound opening during the game. The cut required 11 stitches, and the Indians hope it will be sufficiently healed by Monday. We just have to make sure that that thing doesnt open up where its bleeding, because then they wont let him pitch, Francona said. It needs to close. So, while hes doing his throwing and things, he needs to make sure he keeps this thing not aggravated or pulling the stitches away. So far, hes done a good job. The thing is healing nice.HOME SWEET HOMETorontos meaty lineup loaded with power hitters managed only one run in the first two games of the ALCS. Maybe going home to Canada will help the Blue Jays, who went 46-35 at the rocking Rogers Centre and drew an AL-high 3.4 million fans during the regular season. Cleveland players know theyre heading into one of the games most hostile home environments. Its hockey fans and I mean that in the best way because Im a hockey fan, too, said Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis, a die-hard Chicago Blackhawks fan. Theyre intense. They stand up for most of the entire game and theyre always into it, rallying their team.FAMOUS FANSCelebrity support has been plentiful in the playoffs, with some well-known faces getting nearly as much airtime as the players. At Wrigley Field, actor Bill Murray and his Jimmy Johns cap have become a fixture. In Cleveland, LeBron James and the NBA champion Cavaliers have been among the Indians rowdiest supporters. When the NLCS heads to Los Angeles, expect to see Larry King behind home plate. And although he hasnt made it to the ballpark, 87-year-old comedian Bob Newhart has shown hes eager to (hash)FlyTheW. In the most basic sense, coaches help provide us with entertainment. Yet we demand much more of them than that. We have an entire genre of film and television built around the idea that coaches, particularly in high school and college, have a deep and long-lasting influence on their players. As a society, we buy into the narrative that through strict discipline, hard work and inspirational words, coaches can mold young people into good, successful adults. My work focuses specifically on the intersection of football and sexual violence, and people often ask me how we can begin to mitigate this problem within sports. While there are many answers to this question, an obvious one is that coaches must be a part of the solution. Thats especially true in the bright spotlight of the NFL, where misogyny and violence against women have become epidemic. So the day before the presidential election, when Patriots coach Bill Belichick sent a letter of support to Donald Trump-whom numerous women have accused of assault (allegations that the president-elect denies)-and added his voice to endorsements by Rex Ryan, Mike Leach and a handful of retired coaches, I wondered what message that sent to his players, fans and anyone else who was listening.Coaches understand their level of influence better than any of us. Theyre folded into our communities; they can get movement and money on whatever issues they support. What they say matters, which is why they are so careful with their words and so often try to remove themselves from hard conversations. This is especially true for issues like domestic and sexual violence. We care so deeply about a teams ability to win that when a player is reported for committing off-field violence and his playing time is jeopardized, its all we can talk about. How a coach responds to allegations often sets the tone for how his team and the fan base react. At Baylor, where 17 women reported 19 players for sexual or domestic violence in the past five years, coach Art Briles lost his job after his team was found to have a cultural accountability failure. Yet there were calls from boosters to reinstate him.The NFL continues to struggle with how to respond to reports of domestic violence, with teams not handling the problem openly and coaches often offering no significant comment. This came to a head aggain in October with former Giants kicker Josh Brown, who admitted to abusing his then-wife in 2015.dddddddddddd The inaction spoke volumes: The team had re-signed Brown in the offseason despite knowing his history; the league suspended him for one game once his admission became public, despite a policy that allows for up to six; and coach Ben McAdoo, who once stated he wouldnt tolerate domestic violence, said little more during the episode than Were not going to turn our back on Josh. Hes a teammate and a guy were hoping makes strides. Brown was later released.Coaches can no longer ignore their role in perpetuating a culture that takes these issues too lightly. After the election, Belichick backed away from his letter, saying it wasnt politically motivated, just a note to a friend. The letters he writes dont mean I agree with every single thing that every person thinks about politics, religion or other subjects, he said. Yet by his refusing to engage in the conversation any further, how are we to know what he means? There are coaches across the country who are engaging in issues like healthy relationships, consent and gender equity. Nebraska coach Mike Riley apologized to Brenda Tracy, who reported being assaulted by multiple players during Rileys tenure at Oregon State in 1998. She spoke to his current players earlier this year and has said she now considers Riley a friend and an ally. Futures Without Violence has a program called Coaching Boys Into Men, which integrates a coach-led discussion of those issues into regular practice. Cowboys tight end Jason Witten helped put the program into schools in the Arlington, Texas, area. The key is getting more coaches interested in doing the work. Its going to take the country a long time to unpack everything thats happened in this election cycle. We are at a moment when the ability to shift the conversation from one of locker room talk to one of anti-misogyny feels like a herculean effort. For young people and fans of sport, coaches are spiritual and cultural guides for how they view the world. Coaches must embrace that role, not shun it.Jessica Luthers book Unsportsmanlike Conduct: College Football and the Politics of Rape is out now. ' ' '

SPRINGFIELD, Pa. -- South Koreas Eun Jeong Seong and Italys Virginia Elena Carta advanced to the all-international U.S. Womens Amateur semifinals Friday, keeping alive their bids for rare season sweeps. The 16-year-old Seong is trying to become the first player to win the event and U.S. Girls Junior in the same season. The 19-year-old Carta -- the oldest of the final four -- is attempting to become the second player to win the tournament and NCAA individual title in the same year. The tournament will have the first all-international championship match since 1910, with 15-year-old Yuka Saso of the Philippines and 18-year-old Mathilda Cappeliez of France also advancing.Seong beat 17-year-old Andrea Lee of Hermosa Beach, California, with a par on the 18th hole in a rematch of Seongs final victory over her friend last month in the U.S. Girls Junior in New Jersey.Yeah, maybe almost every breakfast and lunch with Andrea, were kidding around, Seong said. But in the match, were very serious.Seong will face Cappeliez, a 19-hole winner over Australias Hannah Green.Carta beat Puerto Ricos Maria Torres 3 and 1, and Saso outlasted Japans 17-year-old Nasa Hataoka 1 up.Carta won the NCAA individual title in May as a Duke freshman. Shes trying to join Vicki Goetze (1992) as the only players to win the Amateur and NCAA in the same year, and the sixth to win both titles. Carta also is trying to become the second Italian winner, following Silvia Cavalleri in 1997.She overcame a five-hole deficit against Torres, winning five consecutive holes.I dont know why last night I was feeling super nervous, and as I woke up this morning, it was the same thing, Carta said. It was kind of tough. This is why after winning I cried, because all of my emotions kind of went away. I was excited, but it was super, super tough.Cappeliez also rallied, overcoming a three-hole deficit against Green. Green had a chance to win on the 18th, but lipped out a mid-range putt, and Cappeliez won with a par on the 19thI thought I was done, Cappeliez said. I didnt putt well today. ... Even though my putting was not here, my long game was pretty good. This year, I didnt play a lot of tournaments because I had school and graduation, so Im just enjoying myself.Saso closed out Hataoka with a par on 18.I feel really great, Saso said. LOUIS -- One bad inning kept Jimmy Nelson winless in his career against the St. Louis Cardinals.Nelson (7-14) allowed five hits in six innings and retired the Cardinals in order four times Friday night but he gave up two two-run homers in the third that made the difference in the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 loss.Nelson fell to 0-7 in eight career starts against St. Louis. Its just a crazy game and stuff happens, Nelson said. Theres never really just one answer in this game to anything. You dont want to think theres something wrong and start over-analyzing stuff so you just try to keep it simple. No, Brewers manager Craig Counsell answered pointedly when asked if Nelsons woes against St. Louis are weighing on the 27-year-old right-hander.Milwaukee led 3-0 and Nelson had retired the first eight batters when Cardinals starter Carlos Martinez started a two-out rally with a single up the middle. Matt Carpenter followed with his 19th home run, Kolten Wong walked and Stephen Piscotty gave St. Louis the lead and completed the nights scoring by hitting his 21st homer into the bullpen in right field. The two guys that can really hurt him, hurt him, Counsell said. He fell behind Carpenter 3-0, which is trouble. Make mistakes to those guys and thats whats going to happen.Scooter Gennett hit a two-run homer, his 11th, to give the Brewers a 3-0 lead in the top of the third. Milwaukee scored an unearned run in the first when Gennett walked, Chris Carter was hit by a pitch and Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit a hard one-hopper that shortstop Jedd Gyorko did not handle. The Brewers collected nine hits and had two batters hit in seven innings against Martinez (14-7) but they hit into three double plays. Martinez improved to 3-0 in four starts against the Brewers this season. We got a lot of hits but we werent in a lot of situations to really sccore some runs, Gennett said.ddddddddddddWe got three runs on him early but werent able to make anything happen later. The Brewers lost for only the second time in their past nine games and had a five-game road winning streak end.Weve been playing some good ball as of late, Gennett said a night after the Brewers opened the series with a 12-5 rout. Maybe we take three out of four. The win improved the Cardinals, the majors only winning team with a losing record at home, to 31-38 at Busch Stadium and kept them a half-game behind the New York Mets in the NL wild-card race.Seung-Hwan Oh worked around a leadoff walk in the ninth for his 17th save in 20 chances. Pinch-hitter Ryan Braun grounded into a force at second for the final out.DOUBLING UPMartinez induced double-play grounders in the second and third innings to increase his NL-leading total to 32, two shy of the Cardinals team record set by John Denny in 1978. Wong backhanded a grounder up the middle and scooped the ball from his glove to Gyorko to start the third-inning double play. Thats one of the best plays weve seen here, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. The Brewers popped out into a double play in the fourth.TRAINERS ROOMCardinals: SS Aledmys Diaz (right thumb) went 2 for 4 for Double-A Springfield in a rehab start Friday night. ... Jenson Button was left to rue what he labelled as a horrific home race for McLaren-Honda, after he and teammate Fernando Alonso struggled in Sundays Japanese Grand Prix.McLaren headed to Suzuka with high hopes of achieving a positive result, having compromised Alonsos Malaysian Grand Prix by taking an engine upgrade and subsequent grid penalty, in order to avoid a grid drop and maximise the teams performance on the home turf of engineer partner Honda. Following a disappointing qualifying, Alonso could only manage 16th, while Button -- who incurred his own penalty as McLaren fitted a power unit update to his car ahead of the race -- laboured to 18th.The start was really poor, the 2009 world champion said. The problem is its all new in the back, so at the start I just got massive wheelspin and got left behind really. It was really difficult to get past the Manors, they were on soft tyres and I was on the hards, so really tricky, but managed to get past them in the end.I finished 18th so its pretty horrific but still had some fun overtaking, had a few battles but 16th and 18th for us, a long way behind points, a very tough day and a very tough weekend. Its a shame that this is our bogey track, its our second home. The Briton admitted he was surprised to find out he was as low as 18th after battling with the likes of Manor and Sauber, but he said McLaren can still take positives after enjoying stronger performances in recent grands prix. When I saw 18th on the board on the last lap I was actually surprised, I didnt think it was quite that bad, a tough day. But youve got to take the rough with the smooth, I dont think anyone expected us to be as good in Sepang or Spa. Were not quick here but the next race we will be. It cant all be good. CORVALLIS, Ore. -- Oregon State is back and ready for Idaho State after an early-season week off.The timing may not have been ideal, but coach Gary Andersen said the team embraced it, learning from its opening-game loss to Minnesota. The Beavers led 23-17 going into the fourth quarter, but the Gophers scored a pair touchdowns to win it 30-23.It was a great opportunity for us to be able to teach and go back and look at ourselves and truly evaluate ourselves, and keep trying to build the youth, Andersen said this week. For us, the bye came at a very good time.Despite the loss, there were plenty of positives to build on for Saturdays Idaho State (1-1) game at Reser Stadium.Quarterback Darrel Garretson threw for 228 yards and three touchdowns in his debut. Garretson sat out last season under NCAA rules after transferring from Utah State.Former quarterback Seth Collins made his debut at wide receiver and had five catches for 57 yards. And running back Ryan Nall showed his versatility, rushing for 71 yards on 13 carries with eight catches for 80 yards.Fellow Pac-12 North team Stanford also had a second-week bye.Ideally, would you like a bye in the middle of the year if your team is where you want it to be and youre on a roll? Theres no question about that. But for my team it was a good time, Andersen said.Oregon State has dropped 10 straight games dating back to last season.SCOUTING THE BENGALS: The Big Sky team defeated Simon Fraser, a GNAC team from British Columbia, 47-3 in the opener, but fell 56-7 at Colorado last weekend. Idaho State is 0-25 against FBS teams since beating Utah State in 2000.The casualty of any 49-point loss is morale, Bengals coach Mike Kramer said this week. Thats the biggest casualty. I started this offf today by stating no moping.dddddddddddd `No moping allowed. I dont want to hear it.GLOBE OF DEATH? When Andersen was an assistant at Idaho State in 1992-93, the Bengals had a play called The Globe of Death for kickoff returns. The return players would form a tight cluster together around the ball then scatter, all faking a carry, causing confusion among the tacklers. The play gave Idaho State the win in the final 22 seconds of a 1992 game against Boise State.NEW DIGS: Oregon State is opening the Terrace, a new fan experience adjacent to the Valley Football Center overlooking the north end zone, where local food, wine and beer will be showcased. The Terrace is one of many improvements that Beavers have made through the Victory Through Valley project, which included expanding and renovating the football center with new locker rooms, offices for staff and medical facilities. That locker room and this facility (were) built with expectations, and they (the players) are responsible to go out there and represent Beaver Nation the right way, Andersen said.LAST MEETING: The only time the two teams have met was in 2007. Sean Canfield threw for 353 yards and three touchdowns in a 61-10 Beavers victory at home. Sammie Stroughter caught nine passes for 160 yards and two scores.DAY OFF: Last week for the bye Andersen watched football. A lot of it. He started in at 9 a.m. While he mostly watched for fun, one game stood out as something he could draw inspiration from: Central Michigans upset of Oklahoma State.I didnt even take the dog for a walk, so I did nothing but watch football, he said. It was a good day. ' ' '

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Gabby Douglas tried to block out the criticism when national team coordinator Martha Karolyi named the reigning Olympic champion to the 2016 gymnastics team last month despite a so-so performance at trials.Emphasis on tried.Yes, Douglas wasnt crisp on beam either night in San Jose. Yes, there were a handful of other athletes Karolyi could have chosen instead with minimal effect on the Americans chances of steamrolling their way to gold in Rio. And yes, Douglas understands everything she does now will be compared to that euphoric summer four years ago when she rapidly morphed from prodigy to superstar.Yet Karolyi chose her anyway, confident there was nothing wrong with Douglas that a little quality time at the Karolyi Ranch in the southeast Texas woods couldnt fix. The second-guessing on social media came anyway. Douglas heard it loud and clear.I mean everyone makes mistakes and after trials it was hard because there was a lot of negativity, but whatever, Douglas said Thursday after finishing a solid round of podium training inside the Olympic Arena. I feel like shutting it all the way (down) and I have to prove myself.Funny, but the poised and professional gymnast that always seems to turn it on when it is absolutely necessary was back just three days before team qualifying. There was Douglas working the beam Thursday evening without so much as a wobble. There was Douglas gliding over the uneven bars. Its a testament to how much Douglas has improved over the last month -- much of that time spent under Karolyis close, personal supervision -- that shes assured of a spot in the all-around with three-time world champion Simone Biles while Aly Raisman and Laurie Hernandez are fighting for the third all-around spot even though both finished well ahead of Douglas at trials.Thats how quickly Douglas seems to respond when shes able to retreat into the sanctity of the ranch. She kind of has us in a little bubble, Douglas said. Its great we all get to go down there and she whips us into shape. Its exactly what Karolyi had in mind when she selected Douglas over alternates MyKayla Skinner, Ashton Locklear and Ragan Smith and 2015 world championship team member Maggie Nichols. It would be a stretch to call Karolyi sentimental, but shes uniquely attuned to what makes Douglas work. It happened last fall when Douglas struggled in training ahead of the world championships before coming alive once the team got to Britain, where she finished runner-up to Biles in the all-around and qualified for the bars final. Karolyi believes it can happen again.I know Gabby for many years, Karolyi said. Like I said, shes peaking a little bit later and she definitely needs organized and structured training system installed before competitions and she reacts well to that. She responds very, very well. I feel that she is ready to compete.Nowhere is her renewed confidence more visible than on beam. After hopping off once during both nights at trials -- mistakes that overshadowed largely clean routines elsewhere -- Douglas attacked it during training in the green-splashed arena. Podium training is basically a dress rehearsal, a chance for the gymnasts to get a feel for the equipment, the lighting and the energy. No wonder she looked so at home. Shes been here before. Its not really feeling any different (than in London), Douglas said. Weve done so many routines were kind of like on autopilot right now. Its go, go, go, go.Its a sense of urgency that Douglas has long thrived on. A pep talk with Christian Gallardo -- who took over as her full-time coach between U.S. Championships and Olympic Trials -- helped, too.The biggest thing we talk about is going out and doing her gymnastics, Gallardo said. Her gymnastics are beautiful, consistent, clean. She doesnt have to worry about anything other than going out and being Gabby Douglas. When she steps into the arena on Sunday, shell be the first reigning Olympic champion to return to the ensuing games since Nadia Comaneci in 1980. Its heady territory and despite her occasionally uneven route back to this point, Douglas is trying to enjoy it. That doesnt mean its easy. The crown shes worn for four years has proven heavy at times.Im not going to go out here and listen to any negative thing, she said. Just shine bright and do what Im capable of doing. NMD XR1 Australia . Coach Tom Thibodeau says the former MVP will probably start travelling with the team in the next few weeks. Rose tore the meniscus in his right knee at Portland in November and was ruled out for the remainder of the season by the Bulls. NMD R2 Australia . 31, the CFL club announced Monday. The team also has yet to decide on the future of Doug Berry, who began the season as a consultant to the head coach but took over the offensive co-ordinators duties in July. http://www.nmdaustraliasale.com/ultra-boost-shoes-australia/clima.html . With the traditional full slate of Sunday afternoon fixtures upon us to close out the Barclays Premier League season, below are some of the subplots, the starring characters who shaped and formed BPL season 2012-13. All this for a league regarded to be the global reference point when it comes to domestic league play. Au Revoir Bobby & Ballo - Just after Balotelli announced at last summers EURO 2012 his true talent, especially so as he set about tearing to shreds a highly regarded German defence, his inability early in the season to reign in his misbehaving ways finally caught up with him. Mancini who stands accused of disloyalty as he entertained Monaco last spring remained staunchly loyal to his protégé throughout. Now back in a more natural environment, Balotelli has excelled in the jersey of the Associazione Calcio Milan and played a prominent role to diffuse the angry racial hatred that led to a halt in play at last weekends game against Roma. Mancini will be missed. Especially so from the media corps who he always entertained as he willingly provided them with sound bites and headlines one normally associates with a chap who goes by the name of José Mário dos Santos Mourinho. Bounce-back ability - Not easy losing one of world footballs elite in the pre-season, especially so when that player ends up wearing the jersey of your biggest rivals for the title after contributing 30 goals to the Arsenal cause in his final season. Wenger has been used to shedding high grade talent and replacing it with the young and raw who go on and make a good account of themselves in terms of Champions League qualification. This time though it seemed different. As last August the Emirates door slapped RVP on the backside on his way out the egg timer on Wengers Arsenal career would follow at seasons end. The clubs early season form hardly set the Arsenal faithful alight. Instead in a very hostile way they very publically questioned if Wenger knew what he was doing - the low point came during the fifth round FA Cup defeat to Blackburn at the Emirates in late February. Since then though a full on renaissance has swept through the fabled Arsenal corridors as they now sit on the verge of claiming Champions League football once more. How Wenger must be relishing a Ferguson free season. Brendan Rodgers v Michael Laudrup - For every Brendan Rodgers sound bite where for most part of this season be obsessively requested more time for him and his football philosophy to bed in at Anfield I present to you as a counter argument Michael Laudrup. Many players followed Rodgers out of the Liberty Stadium gates for pastures new last summer. Including Welsh player of the year Joe Allen who joined Rodgers at Anfield and yet we didnt once hear Laudrup utter excuses his new look team needed time to gel when his players failed to deliver the goods. Yet with a playing squad of three times the value it was Rodgers who obsessively pressed the need more time panic chord. Back on the opening day of the season as Swansea set about QPR in west London scoring five Liverpool toiled in the Hawthorns heat as West Brom ran up the score. Some of the first words out of Rodgers mouth post match regarded his irritation with some of the referees decisions. As BPL games came and went the why always us mantra became a Rogers theme for the entire season. As Laudrup takes responsibility Rodgers style demands he apportions all blame with others. Not quite sure theyd be the ingredients to even win a lowly League Cup. Keystone Cops Chelsea Rafalution - The BPL does not ever fail to provide unscripted plot lines which on the surface seem more in keeping with the performance of headliners at a Just For Laughs comedy festival than what we would normally associate with the upper echelons of world football. Taking the starring role this season were Chelsea where seemingly a pre-requisite for silverware isnt determined by a winning mentality but firing the manager before Christmas and installing a caretaker manager to close out the season. The appointment of Benitez was mocked and ridiculed from its inception especially so from the clubs supporters who refused to acknowledge the Spaniard let alone accept him. Fortunately their disappointment was the exclusive domain of non-aggressive banter in the verbal forms. The moralists were outraged. As outsiders who likely have not once stepped foot in London let alone Stamford Bridge SW6 it wasnt any of their business. However, even with ample chin A Fat Spanish Waiter Benitez is not. A football pragmatist - who apart from 1 post match outburst where he blamed the Chelsea hierarchy and the official CFC kitchen sink for the ill filling towards him he took all the abuse in his considerable stride. With Champions League football secured last Saturday, Benitez quickly followed that up in midweek with yet another UEFA title. Lets just hope Benitez is afforded a rightful ovation when the curtain falls on his Chelsea reign tomorrow afternoon. Not many other managers can claim to have won European silverware with both Liverpool and Chelsea. The sniggers now silenced - he who laughs last laughs loudest applies in SW6 tomorrow afternoon. Greatness - Having been announced on Friday as the recipient of the 2012/

WASHINGTON -- U.S. Olympic medal winners will soon get a tax break, but not everyone thinks getting rid of the so-called victory tax is a good idea.I promise you, this is bad policy, said Rep. Jim Himes, D-Conn., who cast the lone vote against a bill that would block the IRS from taxing most Olympic winnings.President Barack Obama is expected to sign the measure, which repeals a tax on cash prizes awarded to U.S. medal winners: $25,000 for gold, $15,000 for silver and $10,000 for bronze. The measure sailed through the House and Senate, winning final approval Thursday just as Obama welcomed several hundred members of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams to the White House. The U.S. won 121 medals at the Rio Olympics, including 46 gold medals.A former college rower who once tried out for the U.S. national team, Himes said he has nothing against the Olympics or Olympic athletes. But he called the tax measure a feel-good bill that unnecessarily complicates an already complex tax code.Whats next? he asked. Tax exemptions for Nobel Prize winners? Astronauts? Inner-city teachers? This is no way to make tax policy: I feel good so Ill give you a tax break.Supporters call the bill a matter of fairness.Under current law, athletes who return home with a medal for Team USA must pay a penalty for their success, said Rep. Robert Dold, R-Ill., the bills chief House sponsor. The bipartisan bill ensures that these athletes can remain focused on fulfilling their Olympic and Paralympic dreams without the fear of getting a huge tax bill in the mail, Dold said. Many countries subsidize their Olympic athletes, added Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. The least we can do is make sure our athletes dont get hit with a tax bill for winning a medal, he said. The bill was amended in the House to allow taxes on high-profile athletes such as swimmer Michael Phelps who earn more than $1 million a year.Himes applauded the change, but said the bill remains an election-year stunt. Its an unpopular Congress trying to bask in the reflected glory of Olympic heroes. But its still bad policy, he said. While no other lawmaker voted against the bill, several have told him privately I wish Id been with you, Himes said.John Shaban, a Republican who is running against Himes, said the Democrats vote showed he was disconnected from the sentiment of the country and the rest of the Congress.Really is that how bad things are? That we have to tax the Olympic athletes on their medals, Shaban told the Hartford Courant.Himes and other Democrats spend all their time beating up on the one presidential candidate who says how we never win anymore. And if we do win theyre going to tax you, Shaban said.---Follow Matthew Daly: https://twitter.com/MatthewDalyWDC Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 35 Herr . If youre a Hawthorn fan, the thought of four-in-a-row is now a distant dream. If youre member of the Moir family, you might want to look away now. If youre a Queenslander, youll be cheering this hero who is well on his way to becoming kick-arse legend. That all might seem to be an odd mix of what ifs but they come together with one horse: Buffering. Winning three of anything is a great achievement, but winning the same race four years consecutively? Its rarely done but Buff, as he is affectionately known, is shooting for his fourth win in the Group 1 A.J. Moir Stakes over 1000 metres at Moonee Valley on Friday night. He faces a smart field of eight other sprinters including six-time Group 1 winner Chatauqua. That Melbourne-based racing star will carry the fortunes of punters as a $2.20 favourite, but Brisbane-homed Buffering will be the Western Bulldogs of this event - and only the hardest of characters will begrudge him winning it.Without a doubt it is the underdog status that he carried for so many years, Bufferings trainer Rob Heathcote told ESPN.He has stepped into the ring against the heavyweights of world sprinting: Black Caviar, Hay List, all world-class sprinters. He got knocked out a few times but he kept getting up. Testimony to that, he had 18 goes at winning a Group 1 and at his 19th try he managed to win Manikato Stakes in 2013.I think that never say die attitude is what endears him to the public and, unbelievably, hes won seven Group 1s in his past 14 runs. Its quite extraordinary. I also think that it is because hes the last link to that Black Caviar era.In 53 starts, Buffering has won 20 and placed on 17 other occasions. At nine-years-of-age, hes hardly showing any signs of slowing. Of his seven Group 1 victories, the most significant came not in Australia but in Dubai in the Al Quoz Sprint over 1200m -- against top international opposition -- last March. He beat most of the best sprinters in the world that day. Admittedly Chatauqua wasnt there but I hazard a guess to say that with Chatauquas last-to-first racing pattern that he still may not have beaten Buffering in that race. It was an on-speed dominated race.Seemingly, pride in being a Queenslander far outstretches the sentiment that any other Australians appear to outwardly feel about their state of origin. Like Wally Lewis in rugby league and others, Queenslanders are outwardly proud of Buffering. A Facebook video of his journey from Brisbane to Melbourne under darkness for this Moir assignment achieved thousands of views within hours and well wishes aplenty.Hes represented Queensland so well on the national and international stage for seven years, Tasmanian-born Heathcote said. I think the biggest legacy that Buffering will leave wont be just his ability and toughness, it will be his longevity. Hes competed against the best for such a long period of time,Heathcote trains out of the Brisbane racing hub at Eagle Farm Racecourse. Many horse trainers have often worked their way towards their vocation after gaining experience at stable after stable, but his story is certainly different. Prior to 1997, his business card didnt read Rob Heathcote, Group 1-winning horse trainer; it was Rob Heathcote, Contiki Tour guide. If you told me at the time what was going to happen, Id have had you committed, Heathcote told ESPN.The change just happened with circumstances presenting themselves.I traveled the world for 15 years but spent the last year in England working with my brother, who was a passionate racing man. He had horses stabled with a number of trainers in Australia, but when I relocated with my wife back home I became his racing manager and then six months later his private trainer. We tossed a coin where to live -- it could have been Auckland -- but we chose Brisbane because of the weather.I said to him give me a go, Ill have a go at anything. I was fortunate to have him as a benefactor because I defy any young trainer to start off from scratch nowadays without some heavy financial support. I was lucky and Ive been fortunate to have had some bloody good horses. Buffering is just one of those that every trainer dreams of.Despite having trained other steeds to wins at the highest level, Buffering appears to be the most special. If you see a car driving around Brisbane with the number plate G1 BUFF, Rob Heathcote will be behind the wheel. For Friday nights race, Buffering has drawn barrier number six and is at $6 with UBET. Heathcote believes the conditions will suit his charge. Were not kidding ourselves, this is one of the toughest editions of the Moir weve seen for the last few years, Heathcote said.Chatauqua is clearly the number one sprinter in the world, Extreme Choice is coming off a brilliant Blue Diamond [Stakes] win; theyre quality horses. Lucky Hussler with Darren Weir training, too. Gee, Buffering though, the signs hes shown us at home have been as enthusiastic as weve seen from him in the last couple of years.Despite finishing last in a field of 14 in a Group 1 contest in Hong Kong in May (sensationally won by Chatauqua), Heathcote still maintains a very strong faith. He got gassed, Heathcote said of the Hong Kong race. It was run at a suicide pace. It was an insane speed and the run did affect him.We know the horse is good enough when hes at his best. That win in Dubai was only two runs ago. That race in Hong Kong was run at a breakneck speed. For now, though, he looks great, hes got a real sparkle in his eye, a gleam in his coat.Hes got a bit of kick-arse attitude which, for him, is a wonderful telltale sign for us, and he passed that [impression] onto Damien Browne [(jockey] when he rode him in his last two trials. The winners share of the Moir Stakes $Aus500,000 prize is a very attractive carrot. But the Heathcote stable, particularly Bufferings handler, Mel Sharpe, have another goal in sight. The race has been so good to us and if Buffering was to win it for a fourth time, Id be so proud. Id be more than happy for the race name to stay the same; but if the Moonee Valley Racing Club decided to rename it the Buffering Stakes, I can see the merits behind it. If they didnt Ill still be very proud of him. There is a precedent. The grand campaigner Zipping won the Sandown Classic on four occasions, from 2007-2010, and the Melbourne Racing Club has since re-named the race in his honour. Manikato won the William Reid Stakes five times (1979-1983) and the MVRC re-named another race, the Freeway Stakes, to the Manikato Stakes, which now features as a part of the Cox Plate Carnival. There are so many other important questions that could be asked about this weekends racing, but one could overrule in so many curious minds. Is it true what they say happens on Contiki tours?Yes. Its a tough job and someones gotta do it. Shoes Ireland On Sale . PITTSBURGH -- Jayson Werths wide grin belied the fact that the Washington Nationals right fielder is an old hand at clubhouse celebrations, having played on eight division-winning teams during his 14-year big league career.Werths latest crown came Saturday night when the Nationals clinched their third National League East title in five years, beating the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-1 behind 5 1/3 scoreless innings from rookie reliever Reynaldo Lopez. Its never gets old, Werth said. Never.Stephen Drews two-run single capped a three-run first inning for the Nationals, who return to the postseason after a one-year absence. Their win ensured a playoff berth, and they won the division about 20 minutes later when the second-place New York Mets lost to Philadelphia. Its such a hard thing to accomplish, Werth said. You spent six months trying to do it. Its why you go to spring training early, so you can do everything possible to put yourself in positon to win the division. The Nationals won the division in Dusty Bakers first season as manager. He replaced Matt Williams, who fired following a 2015 season that began with high hopes of Washington reaching the World Series for the first time in franchise history.Baker had been out of the game for two years after being fired by the Cincinnati Reds following the 2013 season, four days after they lost to the Pirates in the NL wild card.Thats what I came here for, Baker said, standing in a corner of the clubhouse and watching his players celebrate. Im telling you -- let these young men have a great time tonight, back to work tomorrow. First step in a four-step process. This step is the hardest to get. Im just so happy for these guys. I love them. I love this team.Lopez (4-3) came on to the start the bottom of the fourth inning with a 6-1 lead and allowed three hits while striking out five and walking one. He was removed a runner on first and one out in the ninth inning. He was really impressive, Werth said. We still have some questions about our roster going into the postseason. Hes a great talent and if he pitches like he did tonight he can really help us.Marc Rzepczynski and Blake Treinen got one out each to end the game, and a pocket of Nationals fans behind the visiting dugout cheered.Joe Ross allowed one run and five hits over 2 2/3 innings in his second start since missing 2 1/2 months with right shoulder inflammation.Drews single came after Bryce Harpers sacrifice fly. Harper also drove in a run with a grounder during a three-run fourth that included three errors and increased the Nationals lead to 6-1. Jayson Werth hit into a run-scoring forceout and Anthony Rendon had a sacrifice fly.Wilson Ramos had three hits for the Nationals, and Drew and Werth added two each.Pittsburgh lost for the just the third time in 10 games but fell four games out of the second NL wild card with eight games remaining.Rookie Josh Bell homered in the third.Ivan Nova (12-8) lost his second straight start, giving up six runs -- three earned -- and eight hits in four innings. He had gone 5-0 in his first eight starts after being acquired from the New York Yankees on Aug. 1 in a trade.I thought he was getting into a nice spot going into the fourth inning and we more or less took him out of the game with our defense, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle said.TRAINERS ROOMNationals: Drew was taking the place of 2B Daniel Murphy (strained glute), who did not start for the sixth game in a row.Pirates: RF Gregory Polanco (facial bruise) sat out a day after being injured while running in the fence while chasing a fly ball. . LF Starling Marte (back strain) was not in the starting lineup for the 17h time in the last 18 games. . SS Jordy Mercer (right forearm discomfort) did not start for a third consecutive game.UP NEXTNationals: Rookie RHP A.J. Cole (1-2, 4.68 ERA) will start Sunday in the finale of the three-game series.Pirates: RHP Tyler Glasnow (0-2, 4.11) will make his third career start and first since July 23. The rookie was placed on the disabled list the following day with shoulder inflammation and has made three relief appearances since being activated Aug. 28. Fake Jerseys .Y. -- The Buffalo Sabres have recalled forward Kevin Porter and defenceman Chad Ruhwedel from the minors as part of a five-player roster shuffle made by the NHLs worst team. There are some early surprises in the race for the Hart Trophy, but two of the contenders are the leagues biggest stars over the past decade. There are many more players in contention for the awards than just the three that Ive named, and a good or bad week can easily alter the landscape, but through the first 20 or so games of the NHL season, this is how the awards races look to me. And although English league clubs are unlikely to splash cash in January, Arsenal and Chelsea could be tempted to strengthen their squads with new strikers. HARARE, Zimbabwe -- The African with the most Olympic medals is one of the great distance runners from Kenya or Ethiopia, right?Nope. Its a swimmer from Zimbabwe.Like Michael Phelps, Kirsty Coventry is going to the Olympics for the fifth and final time, and shes swimming for one more little slice of history in the Rio de Janeiro pool.Phelps has the all-time Olympic record with his medal haul of 22, but Coventry needs one more podium finish at her last Olympics to be the first female swimmer to win eight individual medals. Its not an arbitrary stat. It underlines how Coventry, from a southern African nation with very little Olympic success (apart from hers, that is) has done it all by herself. No help from relay teammates to boost that medal count.Zimbabwe has won eight medals in total at the Olympics, and seven of them have been provided by Coventry, the two-time gold medalist in the 200-meter backstroke. The countrys only other medal is a womens field hockey gold won during the boycotted 1980 Games in Moscow.Shes already Africas best at the Olympics. As for the other mark, Coventry is level on seven individual swimming medals with Hungarys Krisztina Egerszegi. Rio is the last chance to edge ahead of Egerszegi. Coventry is 32, on her way out, knows it, and can make light of it.Whos the swimmer to watch at the Rio Games?Me! she responded.Joking.In all seriousness the field of swimmers is so strong right now, its crazy, Coventry wrote in an email exchange. I remember saying how strong it was in London (in 2012), but Rio will be even more so.Of them all, Coventry rates Americans Camille Adams and Katie Ledecky highest.Camille Adams ... she will get you out of your chairs when she is racing. And then there is Katie Ledecky. She will blow your mind. They are the whole package: hard working, competitive, confident, talented, beautiful and filled with positive energy and kindness.Coventrys been pretty good, too, basically representing her country at the Olympics single-handedly over the last 16 years, and ending up with more Olympic medals than any other African athlete. In the pool, too, not on the running track, normally the most fertile ground for African athletes.Making the Olympic team is a huge accomplishment, going to five Olympics is incredible, she wrote. But winning this number of medals in a sport that is not strong in Africa is unbelievabble.ddddddddddddLike Phelps, she made her Olympic debut as a teenager in Sydney in 2000. And theyll finish at the same time. In Rio, Coventry will focus on her favorite race and the one thats brought her two Olympic golds, the 200 backstroke. Shes also qualified in the 100 backstroke and 200 individual medley. Is there one more medal in there somewhere? Itll be tough. She didnt manage to get on the podium in London four years ago.Coventry grew up around swimming and the Olympics. She remembers watching the 92 Games in Barcelona on TV and telling her parents she wanted to go to the Olympics. She went to the Sydney Olympics while still at high school. She broke through in Athens with the first of her back-to-back Olympic titles. She went to Auburn University in Alabama, winning NCAA swimming championships while she studied. She was desperately grateful for an Olympic scholarship that helped her prepare for Beijing. She also broke the world records in the 100 and the 200 backstroke.Makes sense, then, that she stays around sport and the Olympic movement. Coventry is now a member of the International Olympic Committee and serves on the IOC and World Anti-Doping Agencys athletes commissions. She has clear opinions on the big issues affecting the Olympics right now.O

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Hector Santiago shut down the Royals punchless offence for a career-best eight innings, and the Chicago White Sox roughed up Kansas City starter Jeremy Guthrie in a 9-1 rout Friday night. Dayan Viciedo hit a three-run homer and Alejandro de Aza added a two-run shot for the White Sox, who snapped a three-game skid with their best offensive output in nearly two weeks. They scored twice in the first inning and five times in the third, when they chased Guthrie (7-5) from the game. De Azas homer came off reliever Bruce Chen in the sixth. Most of that offence turned out to be moot the way Santiago (3-5) was pitching. The left-hander gave up just three hits and a walk, and Eric Hosmers homer in the sixth represented the only run Santiago has allowed to the Royals in 19 1-3 career innings. The replacement for injured starter Gavin Floyd, Santiago delivered easily his best performance since going seven scoreless innings May 7 against the New York Mets. It also helped the White Sox get back on a winning track after losing 17 of 22 and dropping a season-high 12 games below .500. It surely helped Santiagos confidence that the White Sox staked him to an early lead. On a warm, windy night at Kauffman Stadium, Guthrie walked three of the first five batters he faced, and the bases-loaded free pass that he issued to Paul Konerko brought in the games first run. Conor Gillaspie added a sacrifice fly later in the first inning to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. The real trouble for Guthrie came in the third, when Alexei Ramirez led off with a single and Alex Rios doubled over the head of Alex Gordon in left field. Adam Dunns single drove in another run, and Gillaspies single knocked Guthrie from the game. Viciedo greeted Chen with a three-run shot to give the White Sox a 7-0 lead. Guthrie wound up allowing six runs on five hits and three walks in 2 1-3 innings, his shortest start since going the same distance for the Orioles on July 7, 2009. It was his second straight shaky outing, too -- he allowed five runs over seven innings Saturday night at Tampa Bay. All the more puzzling is that Guthrie had been having success against the White Sox. Since joining the Royals last year, the right-hander had been 3-0 in six starts against their AL Central rivals, giving up just two earned runs in 44 2-3 innings. Guthrie had given up that many Friday night before escaping the first inning. De Azas two-run homer in the sixth made it 9-0, the most runs that the Royals stingy pitching staff had allowed since an 11-6 loss to the New York Yankees on May 10. It was also the most runs the White Sox had scored since beating Toronto 10-6 on June 10. Tyler Flowers was the only member of the White Sox starting lineup without a hit. NOTES: The White Sox recalled RHP Brian Omogross from Triple-A Charlotte before the game. ... West Indies have added Alzarri Joseph, the 19-year-old fast bowler from Antigua, to their squad for the second Test against India, which begins in Jamaica on Saturday. The selectors have made no other changes to the squad, which now contains 14 players.Joseph has only played 12 matches at the senior level, including eight first-class matches in which he has taken 24 wickets at an average of 24.45 with two five-wicket hauls. He was, however, one of West Indies most impressive performers on their way to winning the Under-19 World Cup in February. He was the joint third-highest wicket-taker in the tournament, grabbing 13 wickets at an average of 13.76, and also bowled its fastest ball, clocked at 143kph.The inclusion of Joseph gives West Indiies another genuine pace option as they try to bounce back from an innings defeat in the first Test in Antigua.ddddddddddddThey began the series with a bowling attack that contained only one genuine quick in Shannon Gabriel, supported by two medium-pace-bowling allrounders in Jason Holder and Carlos Brathwaite and legspinner Devendra Bishoo. If West Indies look to play an extra fast bowler in Jamaica, they will have to choose between two players as yet uncapped in Test cricket in Joseph and the 25-year-old Barbados quick Miguel Cummins, who was part of the squad for the first Test but did not make the playing XI. Buffalo Bills defensive tackle Marcell Dareus says he will make his 2016 debut against the New England Patriots.Im playing Sunday, man. I cant wait, Dareus said Wednesday. Im ready to enjoy myself. Just happy to be out there with the guys. Running around, feeling good. Were ready to go pull it off, man. Were going to make it happen.Said coach Rex Ryan on Thursday: I hope hes right.Dareus has yet to play this season because of a four-game suspension and a hamstring injury that has kept him out of the past three games. He practiced Wednesday for the first time since injuring the hamstring. He would rejoin a defense coming off a disappointing effort against the Miami Dolphins and running back Jay Ajayi, who rushed for 214 yards in last weeks win.Ryan told reporters he is hopeful that Dareus will be ready to go this weekend.Weve gone the whole year and [Dareus] hasnt played a single snap yet, so were hoping that hes out there, Ryan said. Obviously hes one of the best players at his position in the league so itd be a big boost for us if hes ready to play.Information from ESPN staff writer Mike Rodak and The Associated Press contributed to this report. SALT LAKE CITY -- Lorenzo Bonam scored 17 points as Utah eased past Concordia 96-53 on Tuesday evening.Utah put the game away early in the first half with a 19-2 run that pushed the lead to 32-11. The Utes shot 51.4 percent in the first 20 minutes and improved their ball control from the first game with just three first-half turnovers. We fixed a few things that were broken in our last game, Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said. Its just part of the process early on.With as many new faces as we have, (Kyle Kuzma) and Lorenzo and some of those guys are doing a pretty good job of expressing how important some of those (details) are. We just need to trust the process. Its written in our practice facility to trust a lot of things. Cant get too up and too down, but weve just got to keep making improvements.Bonam bounced back from a horrific seven-turnover opener with just one against Concordia. Kuzma finished with 13 points and eight rebounds and Tyler Rawson added 12 points and eight rebounds. Parker Van Dyke scored a career-high 15 to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Its been a long time coming, said Van Dyke, who missed the last two seasons due to a Mormon mission trip. Its almost been three years since my first game as a freshman. Its good to be back and its good to make some shots tonight and play some good D. I think tonight was just a good game for my confidence and prepared me for the rest of the year. The Cavaliers were simply overmatched in every way. They didnt have the athleticism to keep up physically and outrebounded 51-33. Concordia werent skilled enough and shot just 32 percent from the field, including 5 for 17 from beyond the 3-point line.Christopher Edward scored a team-high 12 points for the Cavaliers while Latrell Wilson chipped in nine points. When we come up and play a Pac-12 team, its a great opportunity to test ourselves on aa significant road trip in a great environment, Concordia coach Brad Barbarick said.dddddddddddd Its a great experience for our kids playing on the Pac-12 Network. All of those things are positives for our program in recruiting.Whenever we can get our name out there in a game like this, it just helps us (with) name recognition and the opportunity to establish ourselves a little bit more. Were new to D2. This is our second year in the GNAC. We were NAIA for a long time. ... For us to step up and play here at Utah, thats a great experience for our kids and its great for our program.BIG PICTUREConcordia: Tuesday was all about experience for the Division II program. The game is just an exhibition for the Cavaliers, who were fighting an uphill battle from the opening tip.Utah: The Utes are still developing into what type of team theyre going to be with just two significant returners on the roster. The first four games are simply warmups that include two Division II programs while Utah finds its identity.EASING INKrystkowiak doesnt seem concerned about any strength of schedule issues due to opening the season with a pair of Division II teams and Coppin State. With our team, there needs to be a sense of confidence that youre gaining, Krystkowiak said. You dont want to get pummeled. That can be pretty dangerous. You do what you thinks best in the scheduling. And I thought in this particular year, things are going to start amping up. ... Thats the key for us, to try to get firing on some more cylinders and get prepared for league play.UP NEXTConcordia: The Cavaliers play California-San Diego Friday in the Doubletree Shootout.Utah: The Utes host Coppin State on Friday as they wrap up an opening stretch of with three games in six days. Middlesex 247 (Gubbins 75, Ball 5-66) and 235 for 5 (Compton 63, Simpson 58*, Franklin 54*) beat Nottinghamshire 241 (Patel 100, Finn 4-54) and 240 (Mullaney 64, Rayner 4-83) by five wicketsScorecard The differing emotions between the two sides told the story: as the Middlesex dressing room reverberated with an exuberant rendition of the team song, Nottinghamshires players sat looking tired and dejected. Why? Because victory means Middlesexs title challenge remains alive and well. And defeat leaves Nottinghamshire relegated to Division Two for the first time in a decade.A five-wicket margin may appear comfortable. And, it is true, in the last hour or so, as Nottinghamshires head dropped, Middlesex ran away with this result. But until then, until we had enjoyed 10 sessions of uncompromising, unpredictable, undulating cricket where the initiative passed between the sides almost as often as ball beat bat. It will be no consolation to Nottinghamshire, but this was a terrific game of cricket. In a match of blow and counter blow, the defining punch was - arguably, at least - thrown by Nick Compton. Coming to the crease with his side under pressure, Compton negotiated some testing bowling and a demanding chase to break the back of the run-chase.Gone was the stuttering, indeterminate Compton that we have seen at other times this summer and in his place was a man sure of his purpose and his method. He moved with certainty into his defensive strokes and, as he settled, used his feet to skip down the pitch and negate the threat offered by Imran Tahir with a series of fluent drives. It was, like elegantly sedate. His tussle with Jake Ball was a compelling advert for county cricket. Ball, generating sharp pace and generally cutting the ball in, certainly didnt deserve to be on the losing side. Finishing the game with nine wickets - his team-mates claimed five between them - he looked a threat in every second-innings spell he bowled. His first spell of the day - only three overs - did not concede a run, while his second produced the wicket of the increasingly fluent Stevie Eskinazi caught behind after following one outside off. Generally Compton, standing a long way over towards off stump and playing everything as if it would nip back, looked to see Ball off and pick-up runs against the other bowlers and it was noticeable that, as the ball aged, Ball gained less away movement from deliveries pitched on the stumps. Gradually, Compton took control and the target was whittled away.Nottinghamshires spinners were a little disappointing. Perhaps the slow nature of the surface did them few favours - they are not the first spinners to struggle here - but on a used pitch, more was expected of them in the fourth innings. Samit Patel, who batted so well in the first innings, did himself few favours in the fourth in front of the watching Andy Flower. You can understand the logic of England taking him to India, in particular, as third spinner but you wouldnt think Virat Kohli is having any sleepless night about the prospect. To be fair, he is probably not too worried about any of Englands spin options. These are the moments when you want to be counted, Compton said afterwards. As a senior player, it was my job to win us that game and Im proud of the way I held the team together. I wanted to win this game for us.I felt under pressure this morning. I thought let this me my calling; lets get them over the line. It feels great to have come back into the team and contributed.Ive not been on it like that this season. But that was the real me out there. I decided I was just going to do it and I needed that focus here because Ball bowled really well, especially on the third evening. It wouldnt have been Nick Compton though if he had finished with a raised bat and standing ovation. Instead, with the bulk of the job done (Middlesex required 89 when he was dismissed), he ran himself out after being sent back attempting an optimistic single. Im happy to do my job for the team and leave out of the back door without any fuss, Compton said.He has a technique as good as anyone in England, John Simpson agreed. He is a fantastic batsman and he laid the foundations for us.Simpson himself more than played his part. Not for the first time this season - his unbeaten 79 in Middlesexs two-wicket victory in Taunton may prove to be one of the defining moments of this campaign - he eased the pressure with the tempo of his batting. He survived one early edge - Eskinazi was also dropped in the morning session - but otherwise looked impressively untroubled. James Franklin, with a typically pugnacious half-century, made sure there was to be no let-up and, in the closing overs, punished a dispirited attack. So for Middlesex, one point clear at the top of the table, the challenge goes on. And, given something most unlikely in the penultimate round of game, the title will be decided in the closing week of the season when they host Yorkshire at Lords. It could hardly be set-up better, could it?Nottinghamshire have less to savour. This relegation will sting for some time. There have been setbacks this season, for sure, not least the retirement of James Taylor. But for a squad blessed with this talent and these resources to have failed to

The formidable trio of Canadian receivers -- individually known as Chris Getzlaf, Rob Bagg and Andy Fantuz -- will share the field at Mosaic Stadium one more time on Sunday.TORONTO - Sean Nolin may one day be ready to pitch in the major leagues. The time isnt now and after Nolin struggled in his major league debut on Friday night, a 10-6 loss to the Orioles, he was optioned back to Double-A New Hampshire. “Definitely not the way I envisioned it,” said the big lefthander of his first start for the Blue Jays. “I think I just had too much energy going. Kind of felt like I already threw a few innings and kind of wasted some gas without doing anything. I think that was a part of it for sure.” Nolins night was over after 1 1/3 innings, six earned runs and 35 pitches. The Orioles came at him in waves. Nick Markakis led off with a single, Manny Machado followed with the same and both scored on J.J. Hardys three-run home run. Baltimore had a lead it wouldnt relinquish. In the second, Danny Valencia doubled, Steve Pearce walked and Yamaico Navarro singled to load the bases. Markakis, hitting for the second time, doubled home all three. One out later, Nolins night was over. “It was a tough go for him, no question,” said manager John Gibbons. “Evven (J.dddddddddddd.P.) Arencibia told me everything was kind of flat, you know flat in the zone. They didnt miss anything. Theyre a good hitting ball club, they make you pay when you make mistakes. Everybody knows how the ball flies in this ballpark, I mean it was pinball out there tonight. But hell be fine. Hes a good kid, Im sure he wanted a great one, we wanted him to have a great one but that doesnt always happen at this level.” Nolins parents, Edward and Patricia, made the 10-hour drive from Long Island to watch their son pitch. Less than three hours before the game, as his teammates took batting practice, Nolin was sitting in the dugout taking it all in. You only get one debut, after all. “Just a lot of excitement,” said Nolin. “Its always somewhere where I wanted to be, the big leagues, make my debut and just had a lot of thoughts, good thoughts, and just a lot of high energy.” Nolin returns to the Fisher Cats, for whom hes 2-0 in three starts. Hes struck out more than one hitter per inning and has an ERA of 1.17.The Blue Jays say a corresponding roster move will come at a later time. ' ' '
