Daniel Sturridge showed his importance to Liverpool with a goalscoring return to the side in their 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa on Super Sunday. Liverpool hit Villa for six Six different goalscorers helped Liverpool to a rampant 6-0 win at bottom side Aston Villa. The injury-plagued striker was making his first start since since the beginning of December, when he scored a brace in a 6-1 thrashing of Southampton in the Capital One Cup.At a sun-drenched Villa Park, it only took him 16 minutes to head home Liverpools opener. It was his third league goal of the campaign and his 37th in 60 appearances since his arrival from Chelsea in January 2013. Sturridges minutes per goal ratio of 117.6 is the best of any Liverpool player in Premier League history, putting him ahead of the likes of Fernando Torres (121.3 minutes per goal), Luis Suarez (138.8 minutes per goal) and Michael Owen (142.58 minutes per goal). Top minutes per goal ratios for Liverpool in the Premier League Player Goals Minutes per goal Daniel Sturridge 38 117.6 Fernando Torres 65 121.3 Luis Suarez 69 138.8 Michael Owen 118 142.6 Robbie Fowler 128 158.3 Stan Collymore 26 185.4 Djibril Cisse 13 203.1 The remarkable numbers highlight just how much of a headache his injury problems have been for Jurgen Klopp this season, and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher feels the 26-year-old makes all the difference to the Reds. Klopp: A perfect day Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp hailed the 6-0 Super Sunday win over Aston Villa as the perfect day With Coutinho and Sturridge in the team, they would be challenging for top four positions, said the former centre-back. But theyre in mid-table because you havent got those two playing every week. You can see from the first goal how instrumental the two of them are. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was full of praise for his team after they thrashed Aston Villa 6-0 on Super Sunday Brendan Rodgers could look back and say the injuries to Daniel Sturridge maybe cost him his job. Thats how much he elevates this Liverpool team. Without him and Coutinho its an average team and weve been watching that for the last few months. Jurgen Klopp congratulates Daniel Sturridge as he leaves the pitch at Villa Park We were expecting Klopp to come in and make a difference, but I think he said in the week hes not David Copperfield, added Carragher. You need top players. They havent got that many of them, but the one true one they have is too injury-prone and thats the problem for them. If they can keep him fit between now and the end of the season youd expect a good run. Brendan Rodgers could look back and say the injuries to Daniel Sturridge maybe cost him his job. Thats how much he elevates this Liverpool team. Jamie Carragher The top four may already be out of reach for Liverpool, but Sturridges scoring exploits suggest he could have a major role to play in how they finish the campaign. How important do you think Sturridge is to Liverpool? One running back recorded the most carries by anyone in 13 years, another went over 300 yards and a quarterback rushed for the most touchdowns by anyone at his position this season.Lets start with Texas DOnta Foreman. His 51 rushing attempts in a 24-21 overtime loss to Kansas were a school record and the most in the Bowl Subdivision since Michigans Chris Perry ran 51 times against Michigan State in 2003.Foreman finished with 250 yards, marking his fourth straight game of 250 or more and his 12th straight over 100. But he fumbled twice, with the second one at the Kansas 13 as Texas was trying to put away the game.Foreman built on his national rushing lead. Hes averaging 186.3 yards a game, 20 more than San Diego States Donnel Pumphrey, who was held to 78 yards by Wyoming.West Virginias Justin Crawford joined Foreman and Utahs Joe Williams as the only running backs to go over 300 yards in a game this season. Crawford had 331 on 24 carries in the 56-28 loss to Oklahoma . Like Foreman, Crawford also had a crucial fumble, losing the ball at the OU 4 with his team down 21-0 early in the second quarter.Iowa States Joel Lanning tied the school record with five rushing touchdowns in a 66-10 win over Texas Tech, the most TD runs by a quarterback since Navys Keenan Reynolds had the same number against East Carolina in September 2015.Other top rushing performances: Stanfords Christian McCaffrey broke a 90-yard run, longest in the nation Saturday, and finished with 284 on 31 carries against California; South Carolinas Rico Dowdle had 226 yards against Western Carolina; Florida States Dalvin Cook had 225 yards against Syracuse; and Missouris Damarea Crockett of Missouri had 225 against Tennessee.---Other notable statistical feats:SOMETHING IN THE AIRFreshman Dom Maggio of Wake Forest and Corey Bojorquez of New Mexico each popped 80-yard punts, tied for the third-longest in the nation.Maggios came in the third quarter against Clemson and beat his previous long of 67 yards. Bojorquezs boomer in the secoond quarter was 1 yard off the school record that has stood since 1958 and topped his previous best of 66 yards.ddddddddddddLONG PLAYSFloridas Austin Appleby and Tyrie Cleveland connected for a 98-yard pass play that tied for the longest in the nation this season. Appleby hit Cleveland with a deep ball from his end zone, the freshman shook off a defensive back at about midfield and ran to the end zone in a game the Gators won 16-10 .The other long play Saturday came on a screen pass from Maryland freshman Max Bortenschlager to D.J. Moore, who took it 92 yards for the Terrapins only touchdown in a 28-7 loss to Nebraska.KICK RETURNST.J. Logans 100-yard kick return against the Citadel was the longest ever by a North Carolina player at the Tar Heels Kenan Stadium. Two visiting players, in 1936 and 2012, had 100-yarders at the stadium. For Logan, it was his second kick return for a touchdown this season and fourth in his career.South Carolinas Deebo Samuel also had a 100-yard kickoff return, against Western Carolina.MR. EFFICIENCYOregon States Marcus McMaryion was a model of efficiency in a 42-17 win over Arizona , completing 16 of 19 passes for 265 yards and five touchdowns. His pass efficiency rating of 288.211 was second-best in the nation this season behind Chad Littons incredible 367.225 for Marshall against Morgan State.Oregon State hadnt had a QB throw for five TDs since Sean Mannion in 2013. McMaryion had come into the game with only four TD passes for the season.SACK ATTACKHoustons 11 sacks against Louisville on Thursday were the second-most in program history and pushed the Cougars from 36th in the nation to ninth, with 36. PHILADELPHIA -- The Philadelphia Eagles are back to pointing to the future. They entered the season as a rebuilding team with a rookie quarterback and low expectations. A 3-0 start changed everything and put playoffs in the conversation. But the Eagles have lost six of eight and suddenly theyre thinking about next season and beyond, even though theyre mathematically still in contention.I do think were heading in the right direction, coach Doug Pederson said Tuesday, a day after a 27-13 loss to Green Bay .We have a process. Were going to stick with that process and that routine. You look back on seasons like this and some of the close games that we were in and you learn from them and it puts you in better positions in the future. So we just continue the journey, continue the process. The Packers (5-6) came to Philadelphia reeling. They had lost four straight games and no team had defeated the Eagles in their house. But Green Bay has No. 12 and Aaron Rodgers was spectacular .Meanwhile, Carson Wentz and a mediocre supporting cast couldnt keep up. It didnt help that the defense couldnt make any stops, allowing the Packers to convert 11 of 15 on third and fourth downs. These Eagles cant win shootouts. Not with Wentz learning on the job. Not without any real playmakers on offense.Definitely not with No. 1 running back Ryan Mathews sidelined and No. 1 receiver Jordan Matthews missing most of the second half. These young guys are getting valuable, valuable reps, Pederson said. It may not show on the scoreboard and it may not show with the wins and losses. I totally get that. Were in this business to win games. Thats why were here. But at the same time, I look at the process. I look at the plan. I use those words because those are words that we use around here because there is a plan and there is a process. You build your team through the draft. You pick up a couple good free agents in the offseason. You continue to work. You watch these young kids develop and turn into ball players and you see the potential.Pederson took over a 7-9 team that had regressed under Chip Kelly. Wentz was drafted with the second overall pick to be the franchise quarterback, but he didnt get the starting job until Sam Bradford was traded eight days before the season opener. With Bradford, the Eagles werent expected to go anywhere. So, theyre ahead of schedule because Wentz has taken every snap.I look at how Seattle has built their team. I look how the Raiders have built their team, Pederson said. I look at the plan thats been in place for a lot of teams around the National Football League that are having success now in their third, fourth, seventh years.Thats the direction that were heading in. I see us three, four years down the road. I see us seven, eight years down the road having consistency that way and winning more of these games than not.Game notes Mathews (knee) is day to day. ... A horse bought for a bit of fun on the picnic circuit over the summer months is about to chase a fourth consecutive victory on the professional circuit. After wins on country and provincial tracks at Moe, Cranbourne and Traralgon, Stanborough graduates to metropolitan company at Mornington on Wednesday in the Bayside Suzuki Summer Racing Handicap.Country trainer Bob Beecroft says at 77 years of age, he bought Stanborough to get him out of bed in the mornings and to give him something to potter around with.Having been around horses all his life, Beecroft said if Stanborough could have won a couple of races on the picnic circuit and recouped his sale price, he would have been satisfied. But the three wins in succession have more than made up for any picnic successes and Wednesdays race will be a defining one in the nine-year-olds career. We have been lucky, Beecroft said. The fields weve struck havent been overly strong and the day at Cranbourne the second horse should have beaten us, but he didnt get out in time and we got away with it.Now that hes not eligible for the picnics anymore well just poke arround with him.ddddddddddddes in that race at Mornington which is probably the strongest field hes been in and that will test him, but well see just how far advanced he is.Beecroft says hes not getting overly ambitious with Stanborough and will happily drop him back to country grade if he doesnt measure at Mornington.Around Christmas time well look for a few smaller country races, Beecroft said.Theres no use flying too high because hes too old.He tries hard and he does his best and thats all we can ask of him.Beecroft says as Stanborough has reached full fitness his job now is keeping him mentally fresh. As part of the maintenance the gelding barely visits the track between races and spends time at the beach. That regime has worked with Stanborough adding around $38,000 prize money to his record since joining Beecroft in June.We thought if we could win a couple of picnic races with him wed get our money back, but hes definitely done a lot better than that, Beecroft said. INDIANAPOLIS -- Scott Tolzien and Stephen Morris see every play as an opportunity. So when they trot out Thursday night at Cincinnati, the Indianapolis Colts backup quarterbacks know this game matters.Youre always trying to be sharp, Tolzien said. The way I look at it, its another opportunity to go play in a football game.On this team, those chances usually have been rare. From 1998 through 2010, Peyton Manning started every meaningful game the Colts played. Then after drafting Andrew Luck with the top overall pick in 2012, Indy plugged the rookie into the starting lineup and he started every meaningful game for the next three-plus seasons.Fortunately for the Colts, when Luck went down last season, they had a capable backup in 40-year-old Matt Hasselbeck. But when Hasselbeck announced his retirement during the offseason, it didnt take the Colts long to sign Tolzien. He spent the previous three seasons backing up Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay, and they still had Morris, a developmental quarterback who finished last season on the Colts roster. Now, with the preseason winding down, the Colts will likely follow their traditional tack by giving most of their starters an extra night off to get healthy for the regular-season opener, Sept. 11 against Detroit. With so many injuries already, who can blame them?Besides, Tolzien and Morris cherish getting some extra work. Its being consistent, making plays, getting the ball out quicker, being decisive with my feet, Morris said, rattling off this weeks goals. You have to make sure youre in the books and preaching the right things. This time, though, the two quarterbacks could be vying for one open spot.Tolzien is listed at No. 2 on Indys depth chart with Morris on the No. 3 line. While coach Chuck Pagano has repeatedly brushed aside any discussion of a challenge to Tolzien, Morris has shown promise in his limited playing time and in a normal season might get one of the precious 53 roster spots. Its not so clear now. With the possibility of 10 or more injured players taking spots on the 53-man active roster, Pagano acknowledged Monday that trimming the roster from 75 to 53 might be tricky. Things could get even more complicated when they fill out the 10-player practice squad because the Colts may need all 10 active for Week 1.Morris said Tuesday he has no idea if the Colts plan to keep two or three quarterbacks, though they have usually had only two during the Manning and Luck eras.Either way, Morris is eager to give it his best shot. Its exciting, he said. Its a great opportunity to put something good on film. Any time youre on the field, you want to put good film on.Tolzien also can use the work.A year ago, he threw only one pass -- a 4-yard completion at Arizona in Week 16. The only other regular-season action for the six-year veteran came in 2013, when Rodgers was injured. He played in three games that season, started two and finished 55 of 90 for 717 yards with one touchdown and five interceptions.Hell probably make his second preseason start Thursday and he wants to make the most of it.It is crunch time, but were going to play to win, he said. You play your best when youre prepared and youre comfortable.Game notes Indianapolis got under the 75-player limit Tuesday by waiving linebacker Anthony Sarao and cornerback Darius White and putting safety Dezmen Southward on injured reserve. ... Indy then re-signed safety Alden Darby, who was released Sunday. ... Left tackle Anthony Castonzo did not practice Tuesday because of a strained triceps. Pagano said he expected Castonzo to return to practice Wednesday. Tight end Dwayne Allen also sat out for the second straight day with a sore hip. ... Dont expect cornerback Antonio Cromartie to play against the Bengals. Hes in shape, Pagano said. But theres a difference between L.A. The NSW Swifts seem primed to cast aside last seasons grand final heartbreak if their dominant 67-53 trans-Tasman netball championship finals series win over Melbourne Vixens in Sydney is any gauge. The Swifts stumbled on the final weekend of the regular season by drawing against Southern Steel to narrowly miss top spot behind the Queensland Firebirds, by there was little doubt about this result with the Vixens helpless against a pacy and clinical opponent. The Swifts played with intensity from the start and the result was not in doubt by the midway point thanks to a 20-point second quarter for a 37-25 lead. The Swifts will now meet last seasons nemesis and reigning champions Firebirds in the Australian Conference elimination final. However, Swifts coach Rob Wright refused to get carried away with a near-record finals win over a side missing two key players, and further hampered by the loss of star import Geva Mentor mid-match.I thought our first three quarters were solid and we kept building, but they had players out so I felt that (result) is what it should have been, said Wright. It was a good intense battle, the intensity always ramps up in finals and I think we saw that today. The Swifts continued thheir free-scoring from the regular season with some clinical form at the net from Susan Pettitt (23 goals from 24 attempts) and Caitlin Thwaites (40 from 44).ddddddddddddWright, who doesnt believe last seasons last-minute grand final loss is a driving factor for his players, says his side still have room for improvement. We need to look at our work around the (attacking) circle, which probably quite wasnt where it needs to be heading into the Firebirds. And we will continue look at how we can continue to put pressure on defensively. We just simply want to play better with each week. The defeat ends the Vixens campaign with coach Simone McKinnis content with the showing of her relatively inexperienced side.We were beaten by the better team, she said.We were outplayed and on the back foot at times, but we did some good things and we will focus on those. We just werent consistent enough, but in terms of individuals we had some good performances. It was a solid year, but a hard year and we gave ourselves the best chance of getting into the finals, but we just werent up to it today. England 297 and 120 for 0 (Cook 61*, Hales 50*) lead Pakistan 400 (Azhar 139, Aslam 82, Misbah 56) by 17 runsScorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThe worm turns again. There is some wonderful Test cricket being played at the moment and the Edgbaston Test could bubble up into a humdinger after Alastair Cook and Alex Hales wiped out Pakistans lead with an unbroken stand of 117 on a day that England showed commendable resilience.Cook closed on 61, during which he become Englands leading run-scorer across all formats - overtaking Kevin Pietersen - although of more immediate relevance was the assurance with which he played, reaching fifty off 67 balls. Hales was less fluent, but showed the determination he had against Sri Lanka earlier in the season and brought up his fifty from 116 balls off the final delivery of the day. The century stand was this pairs first in Test cricket, in their 18th innings together, and Englands first since Cook and Moeen Ali in Abu Dhabi last October.Pakistans eventual advantage of 103 was good, but perhaps short of what they would have hoped for late on Thursday before Azhar Ali edged the final delivery of the day. In total, their last eight wickets fell for 143, with the last five managing just 42 as the flimsy lower order was exposed once Misbah-ul-Haqs diligent half-century was ended.Englands seamers bowled well (Moeen was only entrusted with two overs in the day) although James Anderson was ordered out of the attack after encroaching on the danger area for a third time - the second time in the year he had been removed having also transgressed in Johannesburg. But by then Pakistan were eight down and England were able to soak up his absence. Chris Woakes continued to impress to finish with three wickets while England earned another scalp through their fielding when Yasir Shah was run out.Unlike the opening day, Englands openers were able to start in sunshine and the surface remained placid. The Pakistan seamers fed Cook with too much width early on and the fifty stand came up in the 15th over, with Cook contributing 36 of them. The pace did not slow, aided by Hales also finding his groove after some hard work, notably when he flicked Yasir over the leg side. There was little help for Yasir, although he did spin one to bring an lbw appeal against Hales which went to review but had pitched outside leg.It was Hales who took England into the lead with a textbook back-foot punch off Sohail Khan who struggled to replicate his first-innings performance. Mohammad Amir was the pick of the quicks, but Misbah will need a telling contribution from Yasir on the fourth day. When the players walked off, with nine overs unbowled due to various delays, there was a very different feel to the match than a few hours earlier.A key element to this match could yet be the control England managed to exert with the ball, meaning that even when wickets were not falling the innings did not run away from them. The third morning, which began with Pakistan 40 adrift, started in a similar manner to the previous day with them willing to soak up the pressure: Andersons opening five-over spell cost just four runs and while Pakistan had plenty of wickets in hand they were content, but their approach did mean the lengthy tail remained a get-out for England if they could break through.Younis Khan was slightly less jumpy than in the first two Tests but could not escape his rut, providing England their first wicket of the day when he glanced Woakes down the leg side - a similar dismissal to the first innings at Old Trafford off Ben Stokes.Misbah continued to leave and defend against some tight bowling, only occasionally breaking free when he drove Stuart Broad for consecutive boundaries, in a manner very similar to how he has played throughout this cluster of England Tests in the last eight months. By lunch, the runs had started to come more freely.Asad Shafiq started brightly at Lords but has been slightly less productive since and could not break the shackles in an 18-ball stay before losing his off stump when Broad made a delivery nip back which he was late on. At that point, Pakistan were yet to take the lead and England sniffed a chance to keep the Test even. Not for the first time, Sarfraz Ahmeds appearance brought energy to the innings, both in his punchy strokeplay and eagerness to keep the strike rotating. Misbahs early caution was also rewarded as he moved from 7 off 39 balls to a half-century off 93, although one of his boundaries came when an edge flashed past Joe Root who was stood at a very close third slip. His dismissal had a dose of bad fortune about it, although Anderson was unlikely to see it that way, when he defended at a ball which then came off pad and boot into the stumps. It gave England an opening at the lower order and brought a period where the umpires were in the thick of the action.A superb piece of fielding from Woakes at deep square beat Yasir attempt to come back for a second, Jonny Bairstow doing well to gather the throw and break the stumps with his elbow - a dismissal which led to a thumbing of the Laws: it was perfectly legal, a run out can be completed by hand to arm providing the ball is under control.Amirs wicket also needed the intervention of the TV umpire when Woakes rightly thought the lbw shout had struck pad first, while Sohail was lbw walking across his stumps at Broad. By then Anderson had been removed from the attack by Joel Wilson, following further feedback from the third umpire, and his over was completed by Steven Finn who was destined to end wicketless again when Cook added to Englands list of dropped catches by shelling Rahat Ali at slip. It was the last moment that did not go right for them. CARSON, Calif. -- Hampered by a hurting hip, Marcos Maidana absorbed everything Josesito Lopez could throw at him for two rounds. When Maidana got his legs back under him, the Argentine brawler made sure Lopez didnt get another chance. Maidana stopped Lopez late in the sixth round of their welterweight bout Saturday night, finishing a tumultuous fight with a merciless rally for his third straight victory. Maidana (34-3, 31 KOs) absorbed ample punishment from Lopez in a back-and-forth meeting of two willing brawlers, with Lopez particularly dominating the third and fourth rounds after Maidana took a shot to the hip. But Maidana rallied and knocked down Lopez with an overhand right in the sixth, following it with a crushing right uppercut that left Lopez wobbly and glassy-eyed, forcing the stoppage. "My character and my guts got me this victory," Maidana said through a translator. "In the second round, he hit me in my hip, and it was like I was paralyzed. The pain lasted for two rounds, and thats when he landed the shots. But my desire to win got me through it. He underestimated my power, and I knew I could knock him out." Maidana has won five of his last six bouts, and this victory should set him up for a big-money fight against another welterweight star, or even fellow Argentine Lucas Matthysse in the future. Cubas Erislandy Lara also survived the first two knockdowns of his career and stopped Alfredo Angulo in the 10th round of a similarly entertaining 154-pound bout in front of a sellout crowd outdoors at Home Depot Center. Lara was knocked down in the fourth and ninth rounds by the brawling Angulo, but the former Cuban amateur star apparently broke Angulos orbital bone around his left eye while peppering him with dozens of big shots. Angulos face was reddened and badly damaged when he abruptly turned his back and walked to his corner in the 10th, in too much pain to continue. The ringside doctor sent Angulo to a hospital. The main event matched that bouts excitement and violence. Maidana came out with his usual aggression, knocking back Lopez in the first two rounds, but Lopez (30-6) replied with big combinations and more push in the third and fourth. Maidana went to the canvas in the fourth, but it was ruled a slip. Maidana rallied again in the fifth, and he finished the fight with Lopez trapped on the ropes when referee Lou Moret stepped in. "I felt like it was a premature stoppage," said Lopez, who has lost three of his last four bouts. "He hurt me a little, but were professionals, and we fight in situations like that. He stunned me with a good right hand, but I was not out of the fight." Lopez led 48-47 on two judges scorecards at the time of the stoppage, with Maidana leading 48-47 on the third. The biggest crowd in Home Depot Center history packed the outdoor stadium south of downtown Los Angeles, filling the site of several memorable brawls in recent years. Golden Boy promoter Richard Schaefer said the 8,629 fans surpassed the previous attendannce record for Israel Vazquezs third fight with Rafael Marquez on March 1, 2008.dddddddddddd Lopez was a popular second-tier fighter from nearby Riverside, Calif., until he caught a wave of success for the past year since his stunning upset victory over Victor Ortiz at Staples Center last June. Lopez, a late replacement for Andre Berto in the bout, broke Ortizs jaw and forced the former welterweight champion to quit on his stool after the ninth round. Lopez parlayed his self-described "Rocky moment" into a lucrative bout with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez last September in Las Vegas, giving a decent challenge to the 154-pound Mexican champion before getting stopped in the fifth round. Moving back down to a more comfortable weight, Lopez accepted a difficult matchup with Maidana, one of the sports most exciting fighters. Maidana, who also beat Ortiz in June 2009 to make his international name, defeated Mexican star Erik Morales and lost decisions to Amir Khan and Devon Alexander recently, cementing a spot among Argentinas top fighters with Sergio Martinez and Matthysse. Maidana has been with respected trainer Robert Garcia for more than a year, but still hasnt lost the instincts that made him an entertaining fighter. Even before Maidana and Lopez hit the ring, the show could have been stolen in the penultimate bout. Lara outboxed Angulo in the opening three rounds, picking him apart with left hands and short shots inside -- but Angulo abruptly changed the story in the fourth round when he knocked Lara to the canvas with a big left hand. Lara got up unsteadily, but recovered to survive the round. Although Lara fought a smarter, more efficient bout in the ensuing rounds, he went down again in the ninth when Angulo caught him with another left hand, punctuating the shot by standing over the fallen Lara. The Cuban got up -- and he finished the fight in the 10th with one last big combination to Angulos face with 1:10 left. Angulo absorbed the shots, but abruptly turned his back and walked to his corner while Lara celebrated the win. "I was still winning the fight, even when he knocked me down," Lara said through a translator. "I knew I was going to stop him in the later rounds. He caught me with good shots, (but) I fought too hard to get here, through shark-infested waters in Cuba, to let a few knockdowns get in my way. Angulo had good power, but I used my movement and stepped and slid around him and landed my big left hand." Lara led 85-84 on two judges scorecards at the time of the stoppage, and Angulo led 86-83 on the third card. The Associated Press also had Lara up 85-84. "I wanted to stand in front of him and give the fans a good fight," Lara said. "Thats when I got caught." Earlier, junior middleweight prospect Jermell Charlo kept his unblemished record with a narrow unanimous decision over Demetrius Hopkins, the nephew of Bernard Hopkins. The cautious technical bout didnt impress the sellout crowd, which booed both fighters. KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Atlanta Braves pitcher Kris Medlen has undergone elbow-ligament replacement surgery for the second time. The Braves said Wednesday that Dr. James Andrews reconstructed the ulnar collateral ligament in Medlens right elbow a day earlier during the procedure at Gulf Breeze, Fla. Medlen is expected to miss the entire season. Medlen tore his right UCL while pitching against the New Yorl Mets on Aug. 4, 2010, was operated on by Andrews that Aug. 18 and didnt pitch for the Braves again until Sept. 25, 2011. The 28-year-old right-hander was 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA last year. He left a spring training start against the Mets in the fourth inning on March 9 when he felt forearm pain. Medlen has a 34-20 record with a 2.95 ERA in five big leagues seasons and is 30-13 in 61 starts. Braden Smith Colts Jersey . And Nadal, who is coming off to uncharacteristic quarterfinal losses on clay, said his mental strength is still lacking just two weeks ahead of the French Open.Last weekend was a memorable one in the Premier League, but in between Arsenals collapse at Upton Park and Leicesters latest triumph at the Stadium of Light, there was a significant moment elsewhere that went largely unnoticed, writes Nick Wright. With their 2-1 win over Aston Villa, Bournemouth surpassed the 40-point mark with five games to spare. As they approach the end of their maiden season in the top flight, Eddie Howes side are in 11th place and just three points behind defending champions Chelsea. They are closer to the European places than the relegation zone.Perhaps the greatest testament to the achievement is that nobody is talking about it. Bournemouth were supposed to be on their way back to the Championship by now. Instead, a run of nine wins from 18 games since the start of December has given them the air of seasoned Premier League campaigners. Their survival hasnt looked in doubt for months. Howe hails landmark tally Eddie Howe declared himself delighted to reach the 40-point mark with victory at Aston Villa. And yet the circumstances could hardly have been more challenging. In the space of a few weeks between August and September, months of planning went out the window as club-record signing Tyrone Mings, £7m winger Max Gradel and top scorer Callum Wilson were struck down by knee ligament injuries. It was a nightmare scenario equivalent to Leicester losing Jamie Vardy, Riyad Mahrez and Christian Fuchs, or Spurs having to cope without Harry Kane, Christian Eriksen and Danny Rose. But Howe adapted without complaint, and even an eight-game winless run before Christmas wasnt enough to shake Bournemouths spirit. Bournemouths win over Aston Villa took them past the 40-point mark in the Premier League If you look at what theyve done in isolation or compare it to what everybody else has done in this league, it has been quite a remarkable feat, former England striker Luther Blissett, who spent three seasons at Bounemouth between 1988 and 1991, told Sky Sports. When they picked up the injuries they were written off and people were saying they were going to go down. They went through a period where they couldnt buy a victory but they kept plugging away. Youve got to give credit to the manager. He believes in his methods and the players, and they believe in it too.Bournemouths success owes a lot to good coaching and hard work, with Howe demanding maximum dedication and effort from his players at all times. Premier League tracking data shows they cover more distance per game than any other side, while only Liverpool and Tottenham record more high-intensity sprints. Most distance covered - Premier League 2015/16 Team Distance covered per game Bournemouth 117.2km Tottenham 115.9km Liverpool 112.4km West Brom 112.2km Man Utd 111.2km The breathless style is epitomised by midfielder Andrew Surman, who averages 12.1km per game, second only to Liverpools James Milner in the Premier League. All our training is high-intensity, he told the Daily Express in March. The manager has really high standards. He keeps that intensity high, and he expects it in return. If you drop your standards for one day, he is on you.Bournemouth brought in 11 new signings to strengthen their squad over the course of the season, but Howe values togetherness and continuity highly. As such, all seven of their players to have made 30 or more Premier League appearances had a key role in their promotion from the Championship last season, and six of them are British, too. Bournemouths spine The seven Bournemouth players to make 30 or more Premier League appearances are Andrew Surman, Simon Francis, Charlie Daniels, Matt Ritchie, Adam Smith, Dan Gosling and Steve Cook. Hes predominantly got British players there, so for them to be in the position they are is quite a feat, added Blissett. Its become so acceptable to just bring mediocre foreign players in, you forget that we have got very good British-based players here.dddddddddddd Hes given them an opportunity to play in the Premier League and the rewards are obvious. Not every signing that you bring in will be successful. So the more you bring in, the more disharmony you create in the squad, and thats something that never, ever goes away once you have started down that road. He needed to keep that harmony and belief and only bring in players who suited the club, the manager and the style - and hes managed to do that. Hes predominantly got British players there, so for them to be in the position they are is quite a feat. Luther Blissett One of the most impressive aspects of Bournemouths survival is the manner in which they have achieved it. The Cherries won the Championship playing slick, possession-based football, and Howe has stuck to his principles in the top-flight. They rank in the top 10 for passes, possession and chances created, and only Arsenal and Everton have completed more dribbles. Most dribbles completed - Premier League 2015/16 Team Dribbles Arsenal 397 Everton 384 Bournemouth 371 Man City 369 Chelsea 369 Saturdays cleverly worked opener against Aston Villa - where Matt Ritchies drag-back set up Simon Francis from a quickly-taken corner - was an example of Howes ability to innovate, and it is no mean feat to have scored more goals than Manchester United in their first season in the Premier League. You do have to adapt your style a little bit the higher up you go, but I think the ideal behind what youre looking to do should always be the same, says Bissett. If your players are able to cope with continuing what you started, then youve got to let them get on with it. Youve got to show them that belief, and theyve all done that at Bournemouth. They do play decent football and they do knock the ball around, and its good to see that theyve achieved what they have done in that way. Even the games theyve ended up losing have been entertaining. They go out with the intent to attack the opposition and that is a major factor in the success that they have had. Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe gave his post-match thoughts to Sky Sports after beating Aston Villa There have been heavy losses to the likes of Manchester City and Tottenham, but Bournemouth are no pushovers and Howe has shown tactical expertise, too.Along with Arsenal, they are one of only two sides unbeaten in two games against Leicester this season, and with their battling goalless draw at the King Power Stadium in January, they became one of only three sides to stop Claudio Ranieris men from scoring.Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester United are among Bournemouths opponents in their final five games of the season, but they can approach the daunting run knowing Premier League status is assured. Their achievements may have passed under the radar, but Howe and his players are exactly where they belong.Luther Blissetts company Bliss8 is powering a new youth academy at non-league side Burnham FC Also See: Howe hails landmark tally Premier League grades Cheap Chargers Jerseys Cheap Rams Jersey Cheap Dolphins Jerseys Cheap Vikings Jerseys Cheap Patriots Jersey Cheap Saints Jerseys Cheap New York Giants Jerseys Cheap Jets Jerseys Cheap Raiders Jerseys Cheap Eagles Jerseys Cheap Steelers Jerseys Cheap 49ers Jerseys Cheap Seahawks Jerseys Cheap Buccaneers Jerseys Cheap Titans Jerseys Cheap Redskins Jerseys ' ' '

OTTAWA -- Home sweet home. Cody Ceci grew up in Orleans in the east end of Ottawa about 30 minutes from Canadian Tire Centre. He played junior hockey with the Ottawa 67s and Monday night he scored his first NHL goal in overtime as the Ottawa Senators beat the St. Louis Blues 3-2. Ceci recovered a clearing attempt by the Blues and sent a wrist shot towards the St. Louis goal that beat Brian Elliot at 3:59 of the extra period. "I had probably a better opportunity right before that with a slapshot with a pretty open look but it didnt go as high up as I wanted it to," Ceci said of a shot seconds before his goal. "Next thing I know I get the puck at the blue-line and theres a lot of traffic crossing in front of the goalie. I just kind of floated it through and it found the net. Ill definitely remember this. "Its a special moment, it couldnt have happened at a better time and Im really happy things worked out the way they did." Ceci has two goals this season with the Binghamton Senators and both of those have also been overtime winners. Jean Gabriel Pageau and Bobby Ryan scored in regulation for the Senators (14-15-6), who picked up points for the fifth time in their past six games. They only time they have been held pointless during that time was a 5-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday. Chris Stewart had both goals for the Blues (22-6-4) and both came late in the second period and both were set up by Ottawa native Derek Roy. Roy also took a hooking penalty in overtime but the Senators were unable to take advantage of the four-on-three. Ryan scored a highlight-reel goal on a pass from Kyle Turris, who put the puck on Ryans tape from 40 feet away, right in front of the St. Louis goal. Ryan cut in front, went to his backhand and beat Elliott to tie the game 2-2. It was also the only goal of the third period and sent the game to overtime. "We feel much better with the way we played. We played a very good opponent in back-to-back games. The game against L.A. didnt turn out near as good as this one did, but I thought we responded," Senators coach Paul MacLean said. "Our completion level and our commitment to playing without the puck and playing the game hard was much better and at a much higher level. "The good news for us is that we did it and now we have to come back and get prepared to do it again and that starts tomorrow at practice." Goaltending played a key role throughout the game as former Senator Elliott duelled with Ottawas Robin Lehner. Each made some big saves, especially through the first two periods. "Its not the way you want to lose a game. We all kind of made mistakes but I thought we battled hard to get back. Its a tough way to lose," Elliott said. "We got a point but weve got to answer right back against San Jose at home tomorrow." Pageau beat Elliott early in the game as he found the back of the net over the Blues goalies glove. Ryan set up the play from behind the net, finding Pageau in the slot. That goal at 3:37 of the first stood up as the only goal until just 3:10 remained in the second when Stewart scored his first of two goals. Roy made a long breakout pass to Stewart, who slid a backhand along the ice and through the legs of Lehner at the end of a breakaway. With just 12 seconds remaining in the second, Brendan Morrows miscue led to Stewarts go-ahead goal. While behind the net, Morrow fanned on a pass attempt out front but the puck went directly to Roy at the side of the goal. Roys no-look backhand pass was met with no hesitation as Stewart delivered a one-timer to the far side past Lehner for a 2-1 St. Louis lead. "They played really hard in the first period but I thought the way we played in the second was one of the best road periods we played all year," said Blues coach Ken Hitchcock. "We really took it to them and at times overwhelmed them with our forecheck, so I was really happy with the point." Notes: Coming into Mondays game the Senators were 1-9-2 against the Western Conference while the Blues were 11-2-0 against the Eastern ConferenceaScratches for the Senators Monday were defencemen Marc Methot and Eric Gryba along with forward Matt Kassian. SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Yannick Djalo scored a goal and added three assists to lead the San Jose Earthquakes to a 5-1 win over the Chicago Fire on Wednesday night. San Jose (5-8-5) ended a five-game winless streak in which it scored two goals. Chicago (3-5-11) had allowed just three goals in four games. The Earthquakes took a 1-0 lead just before the break. Shea Salinas ran down a long ball from Djalo along the left sideline, worked his way into the box and squeezed a shot between two defenders. In the second half, Djalo chipped home a shot over goalkeeper Sean Johnson in the 79th minute, and his through ball to Chris Wondolowski started Cordell Catos acrobatic finish in the 84th. Thats what he did over the past 2 1/2 years with the Washington Wizards. Wittmans approach helped turn the Wizards from pushover to playoff winners. Now hell have a chance to stick around following a 44-38 season, a 15-win improvement from last year, after the Wizards gave him a contract extension. "I think over the last couple of years what weve begun to establish here, continuity I think is important," Wittman said Wednesday in the hallway near the practice court at the Verizon Center. "Im appreciative of the opportunity to continue on." The Wizards reached the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and won their first post-season series since 2005. They accomplished it in the final year of Wittmans contract and under a preseason mandate to make the playoffs from owner Ted Leonsis. "I was here when it was not pretty. When you see it change, when you see the things that youve implemented begin to work, you want to continue on," the 54-year-old Wittman said. Wittman guided the Wizards to a first-round win over the Chicago Bulls before losing in six games to the top-seeded Indiana Pacers in their Eastern Conference semifinal. "Over the last 2 1/2 years really, Randy has established a great culture, a hard-working culture, a defensive-oriented team," Wizards president Ernie Grunfeld said. "Weve been a top-10 defensive team in the league the last two years. Weve made good progress. We still have a lot of work ahead of us, but were headded in the right direction.ddddddddddddquot; Asked if retaining Wittman was an easy decision," Grunfeld stated," Yes, it was." Having already coached rebuilding squads with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Minnesota Timberwolves, Wittman took over as head coach when Flip Saunders was fired in January 2012. As was the case in those other spots, losses starting piling up in Washington. Wittman has the worst regular-season record of anyone who has coached at least 400 NBA games — 191-329, a .367 winning percentage — since the league started in 1946. "Job security is fleeting, as we all know in this business," said Wittman, who played in the NBA for nine seasons. "If you worry about it, youre not going to do your job well." With John Wall sidelined, the Wizards opened the 2012-13 season with a 4-28 record. When their point guard returned, Washington finished 24-25. With Wall healthy and turning into a first-time All-Star alongside backcourt partner Bradley Beal, Washington ended the 2013-14 season fifth in the Eastern Conference. Washington has plenty of decisions remaining. Two starters — centre Marcin Gortat and forward Trevor Ariza — are unrestricted free agents. Overall, 10 players are entering some level of free agency or the organization must decide whether to exercise a team option. Though Wittman and Grunfeld have stated a desire to the keep the core intact, the roster could certainly look different next season. But the man on the sideline will be familiar. So were his next seven. Even his longest pass came down in the exact spot he intended. Perfect, all around. Dalton completed all eight of his passes and led the Bengals to a pair of touchdowns and a field goal during three impressive series Saturday night before the New York Jets reserves rallied for a 25-17 preseason victory. "He continues to play the way we think Andy should play all the time," coach Marvin Lewis said. "It doesnt surprise me. Its the way he practices every day. He doesnt need to be flashy. He just needs to be accurate. He just needs to handle the offence. He does that very well." It was Daltons first game at Paul Brown Stadium since his turnover-filled 27-10 loss to San Diego in the opening round of the playoffs. Also, it was his first home game since he signed a six-year contract extension that showed Cincinnatis commitment. Couldnt have gone any better. "Thats about as good as it gets in the preseason, I guess," Dalton said. "I just felt good out there." The fourth-year quarterback went 8 for 8 for 144 yards, one touchdown and a perfect passer rating of 158.3. The Bengals (0-2) rolled up 173 yards while he was in the game, pulling ahead 17-3. With their starters on the field, the Jets (2-0) had another bad day at Paul Brown. They got drubbed 49-9 in Cincinnati midway through last season — Dalton threw a career-high five touchdown passes in that one. Their injury-depleted secondary made it easy for Dalton on Saturday night. "Dalton looked like a million-dollar quarterback tonight," Jets coach Rex Ryan said. In an experiment, the Jets moved safety Antonio Allen to cornerback and had him cover A.J. Green. It didnt go well at all — Green caught three passes for 69 yards, including a 35-yard catch after he pulled away from Allen down the sideline. Dalton threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Mohamed Sanu on the opening series, fitting a long throw in-between double coverage.dddddddddddd. "I just had to put my hands out," Sanu said. "It was all Andy on that one." The Bengals went no-huddle with Dalton in the game, part of new offensive co-ordinator Hue Jacksons attempt to speed things up. They looked comfortable at the new pace. "You want to see that every time out," Lewis said. "Andy looked very sharp." Geno Smith played the first half, staying in with the starters after Cincinnati substituted on defence in the second quarter. Smith was 10 of 13 for 98 yards and a passer rating of 65.5. He also ran four times for 20 yards, including a 1-yard touchdown. Smith had his worst day as a rookie at Paul Brown last season, throwing two interceptions that were returned for touchdowns. Michael Vick took over in the second half and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass. He went 5 of 9 for 70 yards and scrambled twice for 16 yards. Rookie Ikemefuna Enemkpali blocked Kevin Hubers punt out of the end zone for a safety. The Jets had seven penalties for personal fouls, unsportsmanlike conduct and unnecessary roughness. Offensive tackle Breno Giacomini got two of them — one for shoving cornerback Terence Newman after his interception, another for a roll block. Guard Brian Winters also got flagged for two. BOSTON -- "The Star-Spangled Banner" played over Boylston Street in honour of an American winner of the Boston Marathon. One year after a bombing there killed three people and left more than 260 injured, Meb Keflezighi added Boston to a resume that includes the New York City Marathon title in 2009 and a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics. Running just two weeks before his 39th birthday, he had the names of the 2013 bombing victims on his bib. "At the end, I just kept thinking, Boston Strong. Boston Strong," he said. "I was thinking Give everything you have. If you get beat, thats it." Keflezighi completed the 26.2 miles from Hopkinton to the finish on Boylston Street in Bostons Back Bay on Monday in a personal-best 2 hours, 8 minutes, 37 seconds. He held off Kenyas Wilson Chebet, who finished 11 seconds behind. Edmontons Tom McGrath was the top Canadian, finishing 101st in 2:30:24. Keflezighi went out early and built a big lead. But he was looking over his shoulder several times as Chebet closed the gap over the final two miles. After realizing he wouldnt be caught, Keflezighi raised his sunglasses, began pumping his right fist and made the sign of the cross. He broke into tears after crossing the finish line, then draped himself in the American flag. No U.S. runner had won the race since Lisa Larsen-Weidenbach took the womens title in 1985. The last American man to win was Greg Meyer in 1983. Meyer and Keflezighi embraced after the race. "Im blessed to be an American and God bless America and God bless Boston for this special day," Keflezighi said. Rita Jeptoo of Kenya successfully defended the womens title she said she could not enjoy a year ago. Jeptoo finished in a course-record 2 hours, 18 minutes, 57 seconds. She is a three-time Boston Marathon champion, having also won in 2006. "I came here to support the people in Boston and show them that we are here together," she said. "I decided to support them and show them we are here together." Jeptoo broke away from a group of five runners at the 23-mile mark. Buzunesh Deba of Ethiopia finished second in 2:19:59. Countrywoman Mare Dibaba was third at 2:19:52. All three women came in under the previous course record. Lanni Marchant of London, Ont., was the top Canadian in 14th. American Shalane Flanagan, who went to high school in nearby Marblehead, finished seventh after leading for more than half the race. She gambled by setting the early pace, but fell back on the Newton Hills about 21 miles into the race. "It does mean a lot to be that my city was proud of me," she said. "Im proud of how I ran. I dont wish I was it was easier. I wish I was better." After breaking a 27-year American drought at the New York marathon, Keflezighi contemplated retiring after the 2012 NYC Marathon. But that race was cancelled because of Superstorm Sandy, and he pulled out of the Boston Marathon last April because of injury. He watched the race from the stands at the finish line, but said he left about five minutes before the bombs went off. He was the first American to medal in an Olympic marathon since Frank Shorter won gold in 1972 and silver in 1976. His 2009 New York victory broke a 27-year American drought there. Another American, Tatyana McFadden, celebrated her 25th birthday Monday by winning the womens wheelchair race for the second straight year. She was timed in in 1 hour, 35 minutes, 6 seconds. McFadden was born in Russia and lived in an orphanage as a child before starring at the University of Illinois. She also won the 2013 NYC Marathon womens wheelchair race after taking the titles in Boston, London and Chicago last year. Ernst van Dyk of South Africa won the mens wheelchair division for a record 10th time. The 41-year-old crossed in 1 hour, 20 minutes, 36 seconds. Van Dyk holds the record for most all-categories Boston Marathon wins. This was his first win at this race since 2010. Last years mens champion, Lelisa Desisa, did not finish this years race, and had to be picked up by a van about 21 miles into the event. Marathon officials said 35,755 runners registered for the race, with 32,408 unofficial starters. The field included just less than 5,000 runners who were not able to finish last year and accepted invitations to return this year. Martin St. Louis Jersey . NEW YORK -- Stuck in a batting slump all week, the New York Mets seemed unlikely to even get a hit. Scoring? That looked downright impossible. Yet somehow, they rallied. The Mets suddenly struck for three runs in the ninth inning against Philadelphias makeshift bullpen minus closer Jonathan Papelbon, then ended a five-game skid by beating the Phillies 5-4 Sunday on Ruben Tejadas single in the 11th. "Desperate? You can call it desperate if you want to, but we have to stay positive," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "I dont know, standing on the edge of the cliff probably is a better way to describe it." Down 4-1 with only three outs left, the punchless Mets fought back, sparked by Daniel Murphys two-run homer. Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said Papelbon was sore and unavailable to pitch in a third straight game. "The daily grind of the season," Papelbon said. "Its just kind of a product of the last couple of games." Lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo and Roberto Hernandez -- who started Friday night -- quickly let the Phillies lead slip away. In the 11th, Chris Young opened with an infield single, barely beating the flip from second baseman Chase Utleys glove. The Mets sent up pitcher Zack Wheeler as a pinch-hitter, and he put down a perfect sacrifice bunt that moved Young to second. Juan Lagares drew an intentional walk and Anthony Recker loaded with the bases with another infield hit stopped by diving third baseman Reid Brignac. Tejada won it with one out, hitting a sharp single to left-centre against Jeff Manship (1-1). Tejadas teammates chased him down in short right field to celebrate. "It feels pretty good after a rough week for me and the team," said Tejada, who recently lost his starting job at shortstop. Scott Rice (1-1) got Brignac on a grounder with two runners on to finish the 11th. Held to a total of nine runs in their previous five games, the Mets began their comeback in the ninth when Eric Young Jr. led off with a double and Murphy followed with a home run that made it 4-3. Chris Young ended his 0-for-18 slump by hitting a one-out double off the wall, and Hernandez emerged from the bullpen -- he threw 99 pitches in the series opener. Pinch-hitter Bobby Abreu singled off the glove of a diving Utley, and a slow grounder by Lagares drove in the tying run. When Tejada came up in the 11th, he said he had one thought in mind: "Finish the game." The Mets comeback denied Cole Hamels his elusive first win of the year and the 100th of his career. He struck out 10 in seven innings while throwing a whopping 133 pitches, the most by any major leaguer since San Franciscos Tim Lincecum tossed 148 in his no-hitter last July 13. The Mets started quickly when Young Jr. led off with a single and stole second, Murphy walked and David Wright hit an RBI single. NOTES: A day after making his debut, the Mets Eric Campbell singled for his first big league hit. ... Jonathon Niese struck out twice, leaving Mets pitchers 0 for 63 at the plate this year. ... The four-game Subway Series begins Monday night at Yankee Stadium with Mets RHP Bartolo Colon (2-5, 5.36 ERA) facing RHP Hiroki Kuroda (2-3, 4.43). The teams play twice in the Bronx before shifting across town for two more at Citi Field. The Mets went 4-0 against the Yankees last year. ... Lefty-hitting Curtis Granderson didnt start vs. Hamels, but Collins said the outfielder would be in the lineup Monday night. It will be Grandersons first game in the Bronx since leaving the Yankees in the off-season, signing with the Mets and saying: "A lot of the people Ive met in New York have always said that true New Yorkers are Mets fans." ... Several players swung pink bats on Mothers Day to support the fight against breast cancer. In keeping with the days theme, Mets reliever Carlos Torres asked the team to play the hip-hop song "Dear Mama" by the late Tupac Shakur over the PA system if he got into the game Sunday. Torres didnt pitch. ... It was Bark at the Park Day to support pet rescue and adoption. Many fans brought their dogs for a pregame parade around the warning track. Not barking was longtime Mets hot dog vendor Willie B, popular for his loud woofing in the second deck. He said his back was hurting, so he was carrying a lighter tray of pretzels. Real dogs are allowed to sit with their owners in the right-field porch at these Bark events -- on those days, Willie B says he instead refers to his usual wares as "frankfurters, out of respect." A sprained right knee derailed any hope of making a run. Now Scheifele is healthy, and Team Canada heads into the playoff round at the world hockey championship with legitimate medal aspirations thanks in part to his progression. "Every game hes got better and better," coach Dave Tippett said. "Hes been good in the faceoff dot, puck control. ... Were going to need everybody to be a good team in the quarter-final, and Scheif, his game has improved every game we played." Scheifele assisted on Ryan Elliss overtime winner against Sweden, scored against Norway and is making use of his increased ice time. Along with the Toronto Maple Leafs Morgan Rielly and Nazem Kadri and the Calgary Flames Sean Monahan, the 21-year-old Jets centre is making big strides in Minsk. "You just gain experience," Scheifele said. "You play against different kinds of hockey. Its just kind of a matter of learning how to adapt to who youre playing against, what kind of competition youre coming against. Obviously just playing with and against the best players in the world helps." Each game is a new test for the young Canadian team, but Scheifeles journey to the world championships showed Paul Maurice something. Maurice, his coach in Winnipeg and an assistant to Tippett at this tournament, was impressed by how hard Scheifele worked to recover from a sprained MCL to be ready. At first, the coaching staff saw a player who hadnt experienced game action in more than two months. Then Maurice saw the player who was so vital to the Jets when healthy. "Hes responded like Mark does: He just got better," Maurice said. "He didnt play a lot in the (first) few games and kept working hard in practice and hed get his handful of shifts one night and show you something in each shift. Dave Tippett is really strong at recognizing that in players during games, so hes gotten more and more opportunity." Scheifele, who is expected to again centre the fourth line in Thursdays quarter-final game against Finland, had a leg up on Monahan going in because he had a little more experience. But he wasnt quite himself. That made Scheifele the 13th forward and his ice time dropped. The Kitchener, Ont., native played just 2:20 in the second game against Slovakia and then 2:34 the next one against the Czech Republic. A leg injury to Alex Burrows -- who practised Wednesday and is set to return against Finland after a two-game absence -- gave Scheifele another chance. His patience set up arguably Canadas biggest goal of the tournament, and he scored another to help ensure first place in the group. "I think every game I kind of get a little more ice, a little more comfortable," Scheifele said. "Every game, just getting my legs under me, and thats the biggest thing. I feel more comfortable every game, and I just got to continue that." The tests are just beginning for the world championship rookies, including 20-year-old Flames prospect Johnny Gaudreau, whose U.S. team faces the Czech Republic on Thursday for the righht to face the winner of Canada-Finland.dddddddddddd "Playing with NHL players and playing against NHL players obviously will help me in my game and help me develop as a player," Gaudreau said. "Playing college the last three years I felt this would be the best opportunity to help me become a better pro." Olli Jokinen, a teammate of Scheifeles with the Jets and captain of Finland, agrees wholeheartedly. "Everybodys goal is to make the playoffs and have a long run. At the same time with the younger players coming here, I think for them understanding the games like this. Its like a Game 7 in the playoffs," Jokinen said. "Having experience like that, its going to help you to get even better. And at the same time, for the younger guys, its an eye-opener, probably, too, how tough this tournament actually is." Tippett likes that his younger players get an opportunity to play in "real competitive, playoff-style games." Rielly considers it beneficial to work with three different coaches he didnt know before and thinks that itll help him learn quicker in the future. "You get a chance to kind of learn new breakouts, new power-play things," the 20-year-old Leafs defenceman said. "I think if youre trying to keep learning like that, thats always helpful. I think Ill be able to carry that back to Toronto with me." Scheifele and Maurice will be able to carry something back to Winnipeg, as well. The tournament is just another chance for the coach who signed a four-year deal and the Jets franchise forward to get better accustomed to each other after just half a season together. Maurice said hes still learning about Scheifele, but he has a lot to be proud of over the past couple of months. "What I really like is how hes handled the adversity of the injury," Maurice said. "When something doesnt go his way, he doesnt quit. He digs in and works harder and competes and then I also recognize that this is a learning experience for him. Over the course of his career hes going to have some adversity. "The question is how do you learn to handle it, and hes learned to handle it here with some pretty high-level hockey where he wasnt handed ice time and he fought his way through it and became a real important part of the team here." According to Jokinen, Scheifele followed the same path in his first full NHL season as he has at the world championships. As a result, he has a chance to be a major contributor for Canada now that every game is an elimination game. "It took him a little bit of time to get used to it," Jokinen said. "But once he started feeling comfortable, he was really good for us. Hes a highly skilled player, he can be the difference-maker every time when he steps on the ice." NOTES -- Tippett would not reveal which goaltender, Ben Scrivens or James Reimer, would start Thursday against Finland, which has no such dilemma thanks to the presence of a healthy Pekka Rinne. ... Defenceman Tyler Myers missed Wednesdays practice because of the flu bug thats going around the team. Tippett expects him to be OK to play in the quarter-finals. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- George Springer has more home runs in the past four games than any Kansas City player does this season. Springer homered in his fourth straight game and went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and five runs scored in the Houston Astros 9-2 victory over the Royals on Monday night. "Springer was absolutely tremendous, just line drive after line drive," Astros manager Bo Porter said. "He was special. The two doubles and the home run, the great catch in right field and scoring from second base on a bloop single that not many guys would have been able to score on. He impacted the game in every phase tonight. "This guy is a three-way player. He can impact the game when hes in the batters box. He can impact the game on defence. He can impact the game on the basepaths. He brings it every day, is what I love about him." The Astros have won three straight, matching their longest winning streak this season, and they snapped a six-game losing streak to the Royals. Springer led off the eighth with a home run against Louis Coleman, his fifth homer in four games. The Royals home run leader has four. Springer is the first Houston rookie to homer in four straight games. Lance Berkman was the previous Astros player to do it, in July 2010. "Hes impressive," said Eric Hosmer, robbed by Springer of an extra-base hit with a superb catch to end the seventh inning. "He plays hard and doesnt get cheated at the plate. He drives the ball." Springer also had two doubles and became the first Astros player to score five runs in a game since Cody Ransom on Sept. 24, 2007, against St. Louis. Springer extended his hitting streak to eight games, and is 8 for 16 with 11 RBIs and 10 runs in the past five. It was a magical night for him. "I guess," Springer said. "But at the same time, Im just trying to help the team win and whatever way I can do it, Im happy to help." Scott Feldman (3-2) held the Royals to two runs and eight hits over six innings. "I thought Scott did a tremendous job with his secondary stuff," Porter said. "His curveball had a really good bite and he did a good job for six strong innings." Royals rookie starter Yordano Ventura was led off the field by a trainer in the third inning after experiencing discomfort in his elbow. The hard-throwing right-hander is scheduled for an MRI on Tuesday. "He was getting under pitches and his velocity dropped in the third inning," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "I came out and decided to check it. I talked to him in the second inning and he said, Yeah, its good. I went out and he told me he was feeling a little something in the back of his elbow, but its on the outside, not on the inside." Ventura (2-5) went 2 2-3 innings, yielding five runs on seven hits and three walks before being replaced by Michael Mariot. "In the third inning, I threw a few pitches and it started to feel a little weird," Ventura said. "I felt something unnatural. It was a little uncomfortable, unnatural, and I decided to say something." The Astros had a season-high 16 hits, including a career-high four from Marwin Gonzalez, who had a double, an RBI and a run scored. Alex Presley added three hits and Dexter Fowler reached base five times with two hits and three walks. The nine runs matched an Astros season high. Lorenzo Cain had four hits, equaling his career high, and drove in a run for the Royals, who have lost five of seven. NOTES: Royals 2B Omar Infante (lower back) was activated from the disabled list and doubled in the first inning. RHP Casey Coleman was optioned to Triple-A Omaha. ... Astros RHP Brad Peacock, scratched from Fridays scheduled outing with forearm stiffness, threw a bullpen session and was given the OK to start Thursday against Baltimore. ... Royals LHP Bruce Chen, on the disabled list with a bulging disk, threw a 25-pitch simulated game. Chen could soon go on a minor league rehab assignment. ... J.P. Arencibias career trajectory continues to fall. On Tuesday, the Texas Rangers sent down the 28-year-old catcher to Triple-A after a rough start to the season. Arencibia was the Rangers Opening Day catcher this season, but is hitting just .133 with one home run and six runs batted in over 20 games. Better still, its in the same team and there are 13 races left for it to develop.TORONTO -- Head coach Scott Milanovich will have to look for another big-play threat coming out of the Toronto Argonauts backfield this season. Veteran halfback Chad Kackert retired Sunday, the opening day of the CFL teams training camp. The five-foot-eight, 206-pound Kackert led Toronto to victory in the historic 100th Grey Cup in 12 but has been slow recovering from a broken left leg suffered prior to last years East final. Kackert, 27, will remain with the Argos as their strength-and-conditioning coach. Hell also continue working to rehab his leg and hasnt completely closed the door on resuming his pro career. "Never say never," he said. "I just dont feel like Im anywhere close to being ready to play football, its an issue of range of motion, to be specific. "I want my leg to get better just because who wants to walk around on a gimpy leg the rest of his life? If its sooner rather than later then I will re-evaluate but as of right Im going to get my leg better and coach this team as far as strength and conditioning goes." Despite playing just three seasons in Toronto, Kackert quickly emerged as an offensive threat. He rushed for 1,467 yards on 228 carries -- an impressive 6.4-yard average -- with 12 touchdowns while adding 50 receptions for 454 yards, two TDs. "Chad was a home-run hitter," Milanovich said. "Hed get a crease and could go to the house and thats nice. "He also brought an intangible. The players loved seeing him succeed. When he got the ball and did well, it just kind of ignited our football team. Well see whos around to replace that but well certainly miss those things." Kackert rushed for 638 yards on 100 carries during the 2012 season -- both career highs -- but was at his best in the playoffs. He ran for 139 yards and a TD in Torontos 27-20 road win over Montreal in the East Division final. The next week before over 50,000 fans at Rogers Centre, Kackert was named the MVP of the 100th Grey Cup game, rushing for 133 yards on 20 carries and recording eight catches for 62 yards in the Argos 35-22 win over the Calgary Stampeders. Kackert appeared in just nine games last year, rushing for 480 yards rushing on 71 carries (6.8-yard average) as Toronto (11-7) finished atop the East Division to secure home-field for the conference final. But Kackert didnt play in the Argos 36-24 loss to Hamilton, breaking his left leg during practice. "It was a no-contact practice, freak injury," Kackert said. "I was just running a route, didnt see the defensive end running his twist. "We knocked shoulders and my foot caught the turf and that was it." Injuries plagued the hard-running Kackert throughout his brief Argos tenure but he knew immediately this one was serious. "It hurt," the former University of Hampshire star said. Still, Kackert spent the off-season working to strengthen his leg, accepting he might even have to spend the early part of the season on the injured list before returning. But Kackert realized Friday he simply wasnt ready to go. "I dont want a handout," he said. "I dont want to come on to a team and take a paycheque while Im sitting around not helping anybody. "Im in a position now where I can help people. Its a different contract but its a priceless opportunity." Milanovich wasnt surprised about Kackerts retirement. "I wasnt expecting him to be here as a player," Milanovich said. "It was a very serious injury, particularly with hhis style of playing using his quickness and speed, and we were planning all along, unfortunately, to have to replace him.dddddddddddd" But not let him go altogether. Milanovich said he and GM Jim Barker began discussing about two weeks ago the possibility of offering the immensely popular Kackert the strength-and-conditioning position. "Kack is such an integral part of our team," Milanovich said. "Kack is too good a person to not find a way to let him and make him be a part of this. "Thats where it started and we were lucky it was something he was interested in." Very interested, as it turns out. "Its very important to me because Ive fallen in love with this city and Ive kind of established a home base out here," he said. "Jim is never going to make a decision thats going to hinder the team or not get it to the Grey Cup. "Im really honoured to be able to stay here and help get the guys back to where we need to go." However, Kackert admitted it felt a little odd Sunday in his new job. "Its a little tiring standing for three, four hours straight," he said with a chuckle. "But it felt good, the guys are buying in and I appreciate that from them. "Theyre calling me, Coach, already and asking me for workout tips. It will be fun. Im going to learn a lot, theyre going to learn a lot." Teammate Chad Owens was shocked to learn of Kackerts decision "He told me about it (Saturday) and I was kind of lost for words," Owens said. "Its sad because injuries happen in this game, we all understand that . . . but there are certain guys you pray and hope nothing but great things for just because theyre good people. "Kack is probably the most genuine person Ive ever encountered. He is the epitome of a team player. Im going to miss going into battle with him out there on the field because he brought everything he had. He was a playmaker." Kackerts departure creates an open race for the starters job among the seven running backs in camp. Sophomore Curtis Steele does have the benefit of experience in Torontos offence but Milanovich said rookie Anthony Coombs, Torontos 2014 first-round pick, remains very much in the picture. "Its wide open," Milanovich said. "Curtis has an advantage because hes been here and been in the offence but it could be any of those guys at this point." The five-foot-nine, 190-pound Coombs, a Winnipeg native who played at the University of Manitoba, said Kackerts retirement hasnt changed his approach. "Its pretty much the same because we had a lot of good backs that just came in this year," he said. "Its not like its free pickings now. OSLO, Norway -- Italy beat Norway 2-0 in its opening European Championship qualifier on Tuesday as Antonio Conte extended his winning start as coach. Simone Zaza scored his first international goal in the 16th minute as Italy showed little sign of missing suspended striker Mario Balotelli. Strike partner Ciro Immobile was offside and in the goalkeepers line of vision, but the referee waved away Norways protests. Leonardo Bonucci doubled Italys lead shortly after the hour mark. Zaza also hit the crossbar late on and had an effort cleared off the line. "Ive had a dream week," Zaza said. "Now my aim is to remain in this squad and continue doing well." In the other matches in Group H, Bulgaria won 2-1 in Azerbaijan, while Croatia beat 10-man Malta 2-0. It was Contes first competitive match in charge after steering Italy to a 2-0 friendly win over the Netherlands on his debut last week. "It was an important match," Conte said. "It wasnt easy, its been a very long time since we won in Norway. These are three important points. In nine days we have managed to do important things with the lads, now we have to continue, get to know each other better to improve. "But I dont remember (Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi) Buffon getting his gloves dirty, while I remember several good chances for us to round out the scoreline. Its never easy to come here so Im happy. Obviously we need to improve but Im happy with the lads attitude." Conte replaced Cesare Prandelli, who resigned immediately after Italys first-round elimination from the World Cup. The former Juventus manager caused a stir when he left out Balotelli from his first squad -- although the new Liverpool striker was suspended for the qualifier. With Giuseppe Rossi out with knee problems, Conte started again with Immobile -- last years top scorer in Serie A -- and Zaza. Zaza, who was the first Sassuolo player to win an Italy cap, looked dangerous early on and he broke the deadlock following a mazy run with a shot from a tight angle which took a slight deflection to wrongfoot Norway goalkeeper Orjan Nyland. Norway almost levelled immediately but Joshua King fired over the bar under pressure from Andrea Ranocchia. Italy went close to doubling its lead when a fierce effort by Emanuele Giaccherini stung Nylands gloves and Immobile couldnt fire home the rebound. The Azzuri did score a second when Bonucci was left unmarked at the far post and headed in a cross from substitute Manuel Pasqual, who had just come off the bench. Zaza almost doubled his tally but saw his fierce effort crash off the crossbar from the edge of the penalty area. The 23-year-old was injured in the move and limped off. However, he was able to come back on after treatment on the sidelines and moments later saw an effort cleared off the line by Vegard Forren. Immobile was stretchered off in stoppage time but team doctor Enrico Castellacci later said it was "nothing to be concerned about." Elswhere, second-half goals from Luka Modric and Andrej Kramaric gave Croatia victory. Malta defender Steve Borg was sent off shortly after the half hour mark for hitting out at Croatia forward Mario Mandzukic. Substitute Ventsislav Hristovs late header saw Bulgaria snatch a 2-1 win in Azerbaijan. Ilian Micanski had scored the opener for Bulgaria before Dimitrij Nazarovs leveler. The top two teams from the nine groups qualify automatically, as does the best third-placed nation. The other eight third-placed teams can qualify through a playoff.
