NAPA, Calif. -- When Derek Carr and Amari Cooper arrived at training camp for the Oakland Raiders this summer they had a simple request.Oaklands star quarterback and game-breaking receiver wanted to spend the few weeks at the teams summer home at a wine country hotel as roommates, figuring any extra time together talking football or just life in general can only benefit them once the season starts. Were having a good time, man, Carr said. Its good to come back and just talk ball with him. He tells me his goals, I share my stuff with him. ... I know how he thinks. I know how he likes to go about his business. I know what he likes to do off the field. He and I should have the best relationship ever.Carr and Cooper live close together when the team is not in Napa and often get together for informal throwing sessions during the offseason. The extra time together at camp allows them to get to know more about each others family and goals and made the talkative Carr even closer with the more guarded Cooper. But more importantly it gives them more opportunity to talk football and to get even more in sync when they hit the field for practice and games. We have a lot more time together, Cooper said. We have time to talk about things, talk about what we want to accomplish when we come out for practice. We have time to talk about the script because every practice is scripted. How he wants me to run certain routes. Thats the biggest thing. We have more time to talk about things. The Raiders coaching staff was very receptive to the idea. Offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said it reminded him of his playing days in San Francisco when 49ers quarterback Steve Young and tight end Brent Jones roomed together the night before games.Musgrave hopes this leads to even more success on the field. Its just good, as those two young players grow together, to be more productive, Musgrave said. They take initiative to get better. ... They like football, and they want to be great.Carr and Cooper took little time in their first season together to strike up chemistry that has the Raiders optimistic that they have a dynamic passing duo in place for years to come.Cooper had 72 catches for 1,070 yards and six touchdowns as a rookie, becoming the first Raiders receiver in a decade to reach the 1,000-yard mark in a season. Those numbers could have been even higher, except for the fact that Cooper dropped a league-high 18 passes, according to Pro Football Focus. Cooper was also slowed late in the season by a foot injury and only topped 20 yards receiving once in the final four games. With his foot healed and a full season together in the same offense, Cooper and Carr are looking for even bigger numbers in 2016.Now, its those little details that we always talk about, Carr said. `Hey, make sure you get to the top of the numbers. Hey, whenever you turn, Im throwing it right at the back of your helmet, so when you turn around, thats where its going to be. Those things that we can get to, thats the next step.Game notes Rookie S Karl Joseph said the coaches might hold him out of the preseason opener on Friday at Arizona as he continues to work his way back from knee surgery that ended his final season at West Virginia last year.---Online:AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFL Tony Watson Jersey . - Blake Griffin had 30 points and 12 rebounds, J. FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons still expect Kemal Ishmael will open the season as the fill-in starter at strong safety even though hell miss his third straight preseason game this week.Coach Dan Quinn said Tuesday Ishmael wont play in Thursday nights final preseason game against Jacksonville. Ishmael, returning from a shoulder sprain, practiced on Monday and Tuesday but wont be able to replace injured rookie starter Keanu Neal this week as had been hoped.Neal is expected to miss at least the first two regular-season games after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee on Monday.Quinn said Ishmael should have no limitations next week.He practiced the last two days and hes just not quite ready with the time off that hes missed, Quinn said, adding Ishmael would have played this week if it was a regular game.Newly signed veteran safety Deshon Goldson will play against the Jaguars after quickly learning the defense. He did a good job this week in terms of learning and applying it, Quinn said. We wont overload him but we definitely want to give him some work.Quinn stressed on Sunday that Goldson, a 2012 All-Pro selection with the 49ers who started 15 games with the Redskins last season, was signed to play behind Neal and Ishmael.Ishmael said Tuesday he was ready to play when needed.Im feeling good, feeling real comfortable out there on the defense, Ishmael said.Ishmael, entering his fourth season with the Falcons, is preparing for a familiar backup role -- assuming Neal makes a full recovery from his knee injury.Ishmael made five starts in 2015 and a combined 15 in 36 games the last thrree years.ddddddddddddIts all about selflessness, Ishmael said of his role. Its bigger than me. Its a team thing. ...Whatever role they want me to fill, thats what Im going to do and Im going to be happy with it.Wide receiver Julio Jones (ankle), defensive end Adrian Clayborn (shoulder) and running back Brandon Wilds (knee) also wont play this week. Quinn said rookie wide receiver Devin Fuller (shoulder) will be placed on injured reserve.Kicker Matt Bryant will return after missing two games with muscle tightness in his leg. Running back Terron Ward will return from an ankle sprain to play behind Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman.Quinn said the final preseason game will be a really fun night for the guys as players compete for the final roster and practice-squad spots.Such starters as quarterback Matt Ryan should have extremely limited time as the focus is on younger players.Thats why its a fun night for us coaches to see the competitiveness, Quinn said. You get a chance to see who wants to go for it in the very biggest way. Its another opportunity to shine and do that.Game notes Quinn said he talked in a team meeting about the 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernicks decision to sit for the national anthem before a preseason game. Quinn said he wanted to make sure players consult teammates before taking any similar action to make sure everything is about the team, especially when were at a ballgame as a team.---AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and http://twitter.com/AP-NFL Jerseys NFL Cheap Wholesale NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys China Wholesale Jerseys Free Shipping Cheap NFL Jerseys China Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap ' ' '

With the best record in the American League at stake, the Texas Rangers send Yu Darvish to the mound Friday night to start a three-game home series against Tampa Bay to close out the regular season. The AL West champion Rangers (94-65) are sitting in good shape to lock down home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. Boston (92-67) and Cleveland (91-67) are still in the mix, but Texas can clinch with one win against the Rays (66-93) at Globe Life Park.Darvish (6-5, 3.53 ERA) is making his final start before the AL Division Series. The 30-year-old right-hander is slotted to pitch the second game of the playoffs behind Cole Hamels.Im very much looking forward to it, Darvish said. I pitched in one postseason game and that was it. Its going to be on the bigger stage, and Im looking forward to pitching in it.Darvish appears to be hitting his stride at the right time. Hes struck out 30.8 percent of batters faced (101 of 328) since the All-Star break, the second-highest mark in AL and fourth in the majors. He made his only postseason start in the 2012 AL Wild Card game against Baltimore, allowing two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings.I feel like Im a better pitcher now, mentally and mechanically, Darvish said. I have been trying a lot of stuff, and my last outing gave me more confidence. Im happy where I am at.Darvish earned the win Sept. 24 in Oakland, a 5-0 victory. He worked seven innings, allowed two hits and struck out nine. The Rangers are going with a four-man rotation in the postseason, though manager Jeff Banister hasnt named the starters behind Hamels and Darvish. The likely favorites are Colby Lewis and Martin Perez, who will close out the regular season against Tampa Bay.We look at all different scenarios, weigh the pros and cons, Banister said. We just feel that four guys, given where we are at and the pitchers that we have, I think thats the best scenario for us.The Rays send Matt Andriese (8-7, 4.34) to the hill in the series opener. The right-hander has allowed two or fewer runs in his last three starts after struggling throughout August and the first half of September.Hes done a really nice job, Rays manager Kevin Cash said. When he was put back in the rotation he probably wasnt as efficient, wasnt consistent with his pitches, but over the last couple of starts hes really pitched ... well. Both the changeup and the curveball have played huge. Hes got a better feel for his off-speed now.Its been a long season for Tampa Bay, but Cash is looking forward to the environment this weekend. We expect to see some big crowds there, which will be good, he said. Its always fun to play in front of those crowds, and they are playing for something because that home-field advantage means a ton. BOISE, Idaho -- Kevin Tway won the Boise Open on Sunday for his first Web.com Tour title, beating Spencer Levin with a 6-foot birdie putt on the first hole of a playoff. The 25-year-old Tway, the son of Champions Tour player Bob Tway, closed with a 7-under 64 at Hillcrest Country Club to match Levin at a tournament-record 23-under 261. "My hands were shaking a little bit," Tway said about his winning putt. "It was on the same line I had in regulation and I just wanted to make sure I got it to the hole." Levin finished with a 63. Making his second start since hand surgery last fall, he missed a 10-foot birdie try in the playoff. Tway earned $139,500 to jump from 39th to sixth on the money list with $219,794, wrapping up a spot next season on the PGA Tour. "This means a lot because Ive struggled since turning pro," the former Oklahoma State player said. "This really hasnt sunk in yet. Ive always wanted to play on the PGA Tour since I was a little kid." Michael Putnam, a two-time winner this year who tops the money list with $430,684, had a 63 to tie for third with Bronson LaCassie and third-round leader Philip Pettitt at 22 under. LaCassie had a 65, and Pettitt shot 67. Russell Knox, the Scot who shot a 59 on Friday to match the tour record, finished with a 69 to tie for 12th at 19 under. College football national championships arent won in the first half of the season.Ask Baylor, Utah?and TCU, all of which were ranked in the top four after seven weeks of the 2015 season. Of course, none of them made the College Football Playoff, and eventual national champion Alabama was ranked No. 8 after seven games, before climbing to the top at seasons end.But the midpoint of the season at least gives us a chance to look back at what transpired during the first half. And there were plenty of thrilling finishes, compelling storylines and memorable plays and performances.Heres your chance to vote for the best in college football from the first half of the 2016 season:Offensive player of the yearSchlabach says?...?Lamar Jackson, LouisvilleThe sophomore has accounted for 30 touchdowns, which is more than 98 FBS teams have scored at this point. Enough said.Defensive player of the yearSchlabach says?...?Jabrill Peppers, MichiganPeppers has played so many positions for the Wolverines so far this season its getting hard to keep track. On defense, he has 38 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 2? sacks, six quarterback hurries and one forced fumble. Plus, hes averaging nearly 20 yards per carry on offense and is as dynamic as any kick returner in the country.Coach of the yearSchlabach says?...?Mike MacIntyre, ColoradoAfter winning a total of two Pac-12 games in MacIntyres first three seasons, the Buffaloes are 5-2 overall, 3-1 in the league, and in the thick of the Pac-12 South race.Best first-year coachSchlabach says?...?Justin Fuente, Virginia TechSure, the Hokies 34-17 loss at Syracuse last week took some luster off the first half of Fuentes first season at Virginia Tech. But the Hokies are 4-2 and upset then-No. 17 North Carolina 34-3 on the road and remain very much in the thick of a crowded ACC Coastal title race. Not bad for a guy who had the unenviable task of replacing legendary coach Frank Beamer.Biggest surprise teamSchlabach says?...West VirginiaWho else had the Mountaineers unbeaten through five games? Theyve yet to face the meat of the Big 12 schedule, but their 48-17 rout of Texas Tech on the road last week was an eye-opener. Theyre in the mix for a Big 12 title, and play No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 9 Baylor at home. Most disappointing teamSchlabach says?... Notre DameThe Fighting Irish are 2-5, their worst start since beginning 1-6 during a 3-9 campaign in 2007, and they just lost to Stanford, which didnt have star tailback Christian McCaffrey. Defensive coordinator Brian VanGorder was fired after four games, and quarterback DeShone Kizer now looks lost.Coach on the hot seatSchlabach says?... Charlie Strong, TexasBarring a complete turnaround down the stretch, the Longhorns will probably be looking for a new coach after the season. Strong has a 14-17 record in two-plus seasons in Austin, and he demoted defensive coordinator Vance Bedford earlier this month. It was the second time in as many years that he changed coordinators during the season.Coach on the riseSchlabach says?... Tom Herman, HoustonHerman is the hottest name in the coaching carousel right now, and he might have his pick among LSU, Texas (if it opens) and other openings at seasons end. The Big 12s decision to table expansion for now only increases the odds oof him leaving Houston.ddddddddddddComeback playerSchlabach says?... James Conner, PittsburghConner battled Hodgkins lymphoma during the offseason, while he worked his way back from the torn ACL that sidelined him for the 2015 season. He was declared cancer-free on May 23 and leads the Panthers with 531 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.Top freshman (offense)Schlabach says?... Jalen Hurts, AlabamaHurts, the first freshman to start at quarterback for Nick Saban, has led the No. 1 Crimson Tide to a 7-0 record. He has completed 63.5 percent of his passes for 1,385 yards with nine touchdowns and three interceptions, while rushing for 428 yards with eight scores.Top freshman (defense)Schlabach says?... Dexter Lawrence, ClemsonLawrence, a 6-foot-5, 340-pound defensive tackle, has helped defending ACC champion Clemson replace its top two pass-rushers from last season. He has 44 tackles, 4? tackles for loss, 2 sacks and 17 quarterback pressures in seven games.Heisman front-runnerSchlabach says?... Lamar JacksonJackson was a one-man highlight show in the first half of the season. He has already rushed for 15 touchdowns and thrown for 15 scores, and hes on pace to become only the fourth player in FBS history to finish a season with 20 touchdowns rushing and passing. Hes completing 58.2 percent of his passes for 1,806 yards and leads the No. 7 Cardinals with 832 rushing yards.Best finishSchlabach says?...?Tennessee 34, Georgia 31After the Volunteers rallied from a 17-point deficit to take a 28-24 lead with less than three minutes to play, Georgias Jacob Eason fired a 47-yard touchdown to Riley Ridley to put the Bulldogs in front 31-28 with 10 seconds left. But then Joshua Dobbs threw a 43-yard touchdown to Jauan Jennings on a Hail Mary pass on the final play, giving the Volunteers an improbable 34-31 victory on Oct. 1.Biggest upsetSchlabach says?...?Navy 46, Houston 40The Midshipmens stunning upset of the then-No. 6 Cougars on Oct. 8 might have cost Houston an AAC title and possibly a spot in the College Football Playoff. It was Navys first win over a top-10 opponent since upsetting then-No. 2 South Carolina in 1984, and ended its 0-18 drought against AP top-10 foes.Best playsSchlabach says?...?Lamar Jacksons touchdown run against Florida StateJackson had more than a few Heisman-esque moments in the first half of the season (like his leap over Syracuse cornerback Cordell Hudson), but his 47-yard touchdown run in a 63-20 rout of then-No. 2 Florida State was most memorable. It featured a nasty cut and electrifying spin move into the end zone. It even prompted Michael Vick to proclaim on Twitter that Jackson was five times better than he was at Virginia Tech.Worst playsSchlabach says?...?South Carolina State kick returner forgets to take a kneeDuring a season in which weve seen far too many players drop the ball before the goal line, South Carolina States Ahmaad Harris might have taken the prize in the Bulldogs 59-0 loss at Clemson. After a Tigers touchdown, Harris fielded the kickoff and flipped the ball to an official -- before taking a knee. Clemson recovered the fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Alabamas defense has changed with the times. The top-ranked Crimson Tide still has 300-pounders clogging the line of scrimmage, but nowadays the biggest stars are the hard-to-block pass rushers like Jonathan Allen, mobile linebacker Reuben Foster and cornerback Minkah Fitzpatrick. Its a group tailor made for stopping all those hurry-up, spread-you-out offenses pervading college football while still defending the run as well as any team in the nation. Alabama has an open date to prepare for a different kind of test: Leonard Fournette and No. 19 LSUs formidable running game next weekend in Baton Rouge.Thats one of the things that were going to have to do a good job of because we probably dont have as many big guys as weve had in the past, because we were built in the past for teams like LSU who were I-formation, run downhill, very physical offensive line, Tide coach Nick Saban said. Were going to have to do a really good job with our guys up front. I think weve got some guys that can hang in there and play that type of game. They certainly did last season when Alabama held Fournette to 31 yards. The Tide has hardly gone soft -- or small -- since the days when hulking Terrence Cody was monopolizing multiple blockers. But Saban & Co. have loaded up with speedy edge rushers like Allen and Tim Williams along with the beef.Alabama still leads the nation in run defense, giving up 70 yards a game and only three touchdowns all season. Opposing runners are averaging a paltry 2.2 yards per carry. The difference: The Tide is also tops with 32 sacks and nine defensive touchdowns in eight games. If Alabama lacks last seasons abundance of 300-pounders, thats mostly because defensive tackles Jarran Reed and AShawn Robinson moved on to the NFL as second-round draft picks.DaRon Payne and Dalvin Tomlinson supply plenty of muscle on the line while the 291-pound Allen has made a succession of big plays, including six sacks, two fumble returns for touchdowns and an airborne sack of Texas A&Ms Trevor Knight.Losing J. Reed and AShawn, you didnt really know how we were going to be on the D-line, Tide cornerback Marlon Humphrey said. Those guys just havent really lost any slack. If anything theyve gotten better. Thats whats been the big surprise to me.Allen has been even more productive since returning for his senior season instead of entering the draft. Pro Football Focus gives him the highest rush grade of any interior defensive lineman while Foster gets the top grade overall among linebackers. PFF says Foster has missed only two tackles.Allen has even been drawing some buzz as a potential Heisman Trophy candidate. Not even his coach likes the chances of any defensive lineman to claim that trophy.I hope he does get considered and I think he would be a great candidate for it, Saban said.Allen is just one of several productive quarterback chasers on the Tide defense. Linebackers Williams (6.5 sacks) and Ryan Anderson (4.5 sacks, 11.5 tackles for loss) have also wreaked havoc in opposing backfields. Now, the challenge will be to contain Fournette, whos coming off a 284-yard, three-touchdown performance against Mississippi. No running back has gained more against Alabama than the 62 yards of Texas A&Ms Keith Ford. The Tide held Tennessees Jalen Hurd to 28 yards and the Aggies Trayveon Williams to 23 yards. Now, the Tide gets its turn at Fournette and backfield mate Derrius Guice.---More AP college football: www.collegefootball.ap.org Boyd Gordon Jersey . -- Edmontons Val Sweeting is two wins away from a trip to Winnipeg to play in Canadas Road of the Rings in December. In this season of home runs, when balls are flying out of ballparks at the second-highest rate in history, we associate power with imposing figures like David Ortiz or Kris Bryant or Miguel Cabrera.Yet there, high up the leaderboards, sits Brian Dozier, generously listed at 5-foot-11, with 42 home runs, one away from tying the single-season record for a second baseman. There sits 5-foot-10 Khris Davis with 41 home runs. A little lower is Mookie Betts, 5-foot-9 in cleats, with 31 home runs. Jose Altuve is leading the league in hitting and has 24 home runs and even his mother doesnt believe his listed height of 5-foot-6. Padres rookie Ryan Schhimpf, 5-foot-9 on a good day, has blasted 19 home runs in 86 games.ddddddddddddThis leads to a question: Are we in some sort of golden age of short players? There are even more on the way. Red Sox rookie Andrew Benintendi, the top hitting prospect in the minors this season, has made a smooth transition to the majors, hitting .309 and slugging .500 in 106 plate appearances. Hes slightly built and listed at 5-foot-10 and maybe he is; after interviewing him at the Futures Games, I might think a recount is in order. Adelaide United are bottling their anger at the ongoing A-League suspension of coach Guillermo Amor. The Spaniard will be banned from the sidelines for the second match in row on Sunday, a suspension for making contact with a fourth official during a game against Perth two weeks ago.Midfielder James Holland says the playing group is trying not to waste energy on the outcome. We have faced enough of that this year. We know how to deal with it, Holland said. The coaches are big on that with us as well, they tell us to get on with it.Its part of football so we cant sit there with a chip on our shoulder or angry at the world. We have to accept it and get on with it.Adelaide, stuck in the same spot as last year: winless after eight rounds, will have assistant coach Pau Marti steering from the sidelines, with Amor in the stands at Coopers Stadium.Marti said being without Amor on match day felt comfortable enough. The staff and I didnt feel nothing different, he said on Saturday. The team was very good, very focused, and thats easier - when the team is performing and is really working to plan, that is no different is its me or Guillermo.Holland said Adelaides players would be well briefed by Amor ahead of arriving at the stadium for the twilight encounter. We do a lot of the talking prior to getting to the stadium, Holland said.So for us, the coaches kind of leave us alone to do our thing to prepare for a game.STATS THAT MATTER* The Reds have won five of the past six home games against the Phoenix.* Adelaide have lost all three games when theyve scored first this season.* Adelaide frontman Sergi Guardiola has scored three times from 20 shots this season. NORTON, Mass. -- Paul Casey is going after his first PGA Tour victory in seven years at the Deutsche Bank Championship, and he has plenty of names behind him to consider in the Labor Day finish.Brian Harman is three shots behind. PGA champion Jimmy Walker is another shot back. Rory McIlroy, six shots behind, is still in the mix.But the biggest name of all might be Hermine.Once a hurricane, now classified as a post-tropical cyclone, the system was moving out toward the Atlantic and leaving behind some potentially challenging weather for the final round at the TPC Boston. In the forecast is 35 mph wind and bursts of showers for most of the final round.Wind and rain make a recipe for just about anything.I used to do it fairly well in Europe, said Casey, who grew up in England and lives in Arizona. I dont necessarily like it, but I can deal with it.He might not have a choice.THE LEADER: No one led by more than one shot in the third round Sunday until Casey hit 7-iron to 5 feet for birdie on the 16th hole, and then closed out his round with a 3-iron that landed just left of the green on the par-5 18th, hopped on and caught a ridge that sent the ball 30 inches below the hole to set up an eagle. That put him at 15-under 198.What does that mean for Casey?I havent really thought about it, he said. Still digest my 3-iron on the last. I dont know. Depends on how bad it is.THE CHASERS: Harmans only victory was two years ago at the John Deere Classic. Four shots behind, and playing in the final group, is Smylie Kaufman, who won his first PGA Tour event in Las Vegas at the start of the season. Walker and Kevin Chappell also were four back at 11-under 202.Chappell is the only player from the top 10 on the leaderboard who has yet to win on the PGA Tour. He was in the lead at 13 under until a perfect tee shot on the 12th hole landed in a divot. He came up short into a hazard, tried to play out of the native area and wound up with a double bogey.I said yesterday that at some point in time during the next 36 holes, I was going to be hit with adversity, Chappell said. Felt like I hung in there and finished with six straight pars from not-the-best position. So thats what Im going to choose to look at, and hopefully tomorrow I can get the ball in position and try to make some birdies.THE OTHER RACE: The top 70 in the FedEx Cup after Monday advance to the third playoff event at Crooked Stick in the BMW Championship. Casey was at No. 59 and Harman at No. 67 and now should have no trouble advancing.Monday could be far more significant for Steve Stricker, Charles Howell III and Billy Hurley III. Stricker barely made it into the Deutsche Bank Championship and is No. 98. He was tied for 11th, which at the moment is just enough for him to sneak into the top 70.Hurley is at No. 77 and shot 69 to get into the large tie for 11th. Hurley should be fine, but a good finish would help.Howell? Hes safe at No. 50, but every point counts. The better he finishes in the Deutsche Bank, the more progress he makes toward being among the top 30 who reach the Tour Championship. Howell hasnt made it to East Lake since 2011. Those who reach East Lake get into the Masters, which the Augusta native has not played since 2012.RYDER CUP IMPLICATIONS: There wouldnt appear be any. U.S. captain Davis Love III doesnt make his three picks until after the BMW Championship, and he still has another pick after that. But its worth keeping an eye on Jim Furyk, who is No. 84 and tied for 48th. He needs a big round to advance.Furyk is under consideration for a captains pick, in part because he is No. 15 despite losing four months at the start of the year recovering from wrist surgery. But it might be tougher to pick a hot player who doesnt even make it to the third playoff event. Puma Rihanna Creepers Pink . PHILADELPHIA -- Theres a clock in Sam Bradfords head, and its ticking fast. The alarm goes off at 2.3 seconds, which is the average length of time its taking the Minnesota Vikings?quarterback to throw the ball this season. That was the fourth-fastest time in the entire NFL entering Sundays game, and Sundays game showed the reason for that. Its hard to evaluate his performance when you look like a sieve in there, Vikings coach Mike Zimmer said after his team suffered its first loss of the season?21-10 to the Philadelphia Eagles.Theres a clock in Zimmers head too. Although its showing weeks and months instead of seconds, its ticking just as unmercifully. Zimmer is a man who knows his teams glittering 2016 start didnt come with much margin for error. At some point, the alarm clock is going to ring, and the expiration date is going to arrive. At some point, the wolf knocks on the door and sacks Bradford six times in one game.We were soft. We got overpowered. We got whipped, Zimmer said. It was a poor display. We have to stay away from negative plays offensively. Were not good enough to overcome these things. The 5-0 record the Vikings carried into Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday wasnt a mirage, but it wasnt bulletproof, either. The pressure with which the Eagles defensive front whipped Minnesotas overmatched tackles was the attack for which Zimmer has clearly been bracing. Philadelphia sacked Bradford six times, and the Eagles also hit him 19 times and knocked him down 14 times. A tackle rotation that included T.J. Clemmings, Jeremiah Sirles and recently signed veteran Jake Long didnt have any answers for the Eagles edge rushers, who were appropriately unimpressed. They were down a couple of offensive linemen, Connor Barwin said, so we knew there was going to be some opportunity there. Was there ever. Bradford and the Vikings offense didnt turn the ball over once the first five games of the season. They turned it over twice in the first quarter Sunday. The only reason this game didnt get out of hand right away was that the Eagles turned the ball over three times in the first quarter, a truly sordid 15 minutes of facsimile football in which it appeared as if each offense perceived the ball to be radioactive. But when things did settle down, it was Bradford, more than Philadelphias Carson Wentz, who spent the critical part of the day under siege. Its hard to throw when someones grabbing your arm, Zimmer said. Im not worried about Bradford. He should be. Even if he isnt concerned about Bradfords performance (which is what he meant), theres surely reason to worry about Bradfords health if the protection issues dont improve. Bradford is in his seventh NFL season and has played all 16 games only twice -- most recently in 2012. The Vikings obviously know hes a health risk; everyone does. They acquired him a week before the start of the season out of desperation, for a first-round pick and more, because Teddy Bridgewater got hurt and they believed they had a chance to win the Super Bowl if they could get decent quarterback play. The risk, for the Vikings, is worth it because they believe -- and believe they have shown -- the ability to compete with anyone in the NFL this season. But oh, that ticking clock. Not two weeks into the season, Minnesota lost starting left tackle Matt Kalil and, worst of all, star running back Adrian Peterson. That combination of absences has left the Vikings without a running game or a viable, week-to-week plan to keep Bradford upright. And they feel it.Hes as tough as they come, and hes shown that in these last five games, Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph said of Bradford. Id like to eliminate some of those hits hes taking and keep him on his feet.Bradford would like that too, and Zimmer made no secret of how badly he craves that. The Vikings arent going to be able to go get outside help. They already dealt their first-round pick for Bradford, and theyre only about $426,000 under the salary cap. Even if they could trade for a new left tackle, they couldnt pay him. This is what theyve got: this combination of overmatched tackles and a loud, ticking clock.Obviously, Ive been on teams that have had the injury bug, and Ive fought it too, Bradford said. Its been a different group of guys in front of me, but I cant let that affect me. Ive got confidence in those guys. Theyve done a great job of keeping me clean, keeping me protected. I think well come back, figure out a way to get better, and well overcome this. That clock thats in Bradfords head every time he takes a snap is just like the one that needs to be in the Vikings heads as they swallow their first loss and take this turn into the middle part of the season. Theyre 5-1 and have looked as good as any team in the league this year. But because they cant afford for Bradford to get hurt and because their biggest current problem puts his health at direct risk, they dont have a lot of time to get this figured out. After they had their point-after blocked, the Falcons answered with a drive that ended inside the 5-year line. The field goal gave the Falcons a 10-6 lead, though there is likely to be plenty more scoring.---1:15 p.m. ETIts beginning to look a lot like December in the NFC North. It was cold and snowy when the Chicago Bears kicked off to the San Francisco 49ers, and the Green Bay Packers had similar weather for their matchup with the Houston Texans. Somewhere tonight, a little girl will be tucked in and told that she is loved to the moon and back. She may begin, before drifting into dreamland, to compute the distance her caregivers love has to travel to reach the moon and then return to her.And if author Margot Lee Shetterly has her way, when that little girl awakens from her slumber, shell learn the names of the women who helped charter that journey.Hidden Figures, Shetterlys first book, is the story of the nearly forgotten black women who worked at the?Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia -- the National Aeronautics and Space Administrations first field center, circa World War II. In the 1940s, these female scientists and mathematicians were the human computers behind some of the biggest advancements in aeronautics. The title of this book is something of a misnomer, Shetterly noted. The history that came together in these pages wasnt so much hidden, but unseen -- fragments patiently biding their time in footnotes, family anecdotes and musty folders before returning to view.Shetterlys book, which will be released Tuesday, will also be adapted into a 20th Century Fox film of the same name that will hit theaters in early 2017.The movie, which is expected to be a blockbuster success, will star Taraji P. Henson as Katherine Johnson, a physicist, space scientist, and mathematician; Octavia Spencer as Dorothy Vaughan, a mathematician; Janelle Monae as Mary Jackson, also a mathematician; and Kevin Costner as Al Harrison, the head of the space program.Seeing such boldface names attached to a film adaptation of her book was quite the shock for Shetterly. So much so that she didnt believe the movies producer, Donna Gigliotti (Silver Linings Playbook), when she expressed interest in the story.I was like, Yeah, OK, whatever, right, but everything she said every step along the way has really come to fruition, Shetterly said. The book starts with World War II and travels through the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement and the space race, providing a fly-on-the-wall style account of the women who helped create some of the greatest aeronautics accomplishments for the United States. These former school teachers and beautiful minds, who were relegated to math instruction in the segregated South, were called into service during the labor shortages of the war. Then suddenly things at Langley became a bit more colorful, and of course, inspiring.Shetterleys father was a NASA engineer and her mom worked as an English professor at Hampton University in Virginia, so she grew up in the same neighborhood where many of these maverick women resided. ?When writing about the unseen and seemingly forgotten women who contributed to NASAs race to the moon, Shetterly is preoccupied with the narrative of numbers: For too long, history has imposed a binary condition on its black citizens: either nameless or renowned, menial or exceptional, passive recipients of the forces of history or superheroes who acquire mythic status not just because of their deeds but because of their scarcity.?The book also focuses on who these women were beyond their jobs, and sees them from a community perspective. They were mothers, wives, Girl Scout troop leaders and your next-door neighbors, Shetterly said.Literally, for me, they were women in my neighborhood. But they were concurrently doing this extraordinary work. The idea that you can be an ordinary person and an extraordinary person at the same time, as opposed to the pressure of being the one and only black person, or the one and only woman. ... The fact that there were so many of them is what makes this story so exceptional.Shetterly has spent the last six years counting exceptional communities of women. The numbers of known women mathematicians who worked for NASA are continuing to grow, and she hasnt finished counting yet. After completing Hidden Figures, Shetterly started The Human Computer Project, the mission of which is to tell the stories of the pioneering women who worked as mathematicians and computers at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) and NASA in the early days of aeronautics and the American space program.Shetterly hopes that with the release of her book and accompanying film, even more names will begin pouring in, and more history will be revealed. Thereafter, shed like to expand research to NASAs Glenn Center in Cleveland. The book, she says, is the first part of a midcentury African-American history trilogy.Shetterlys boundless optimism is apparent when speaking with her. It comes across in the lilt of her voice, in the way she laughs after she says, You know? It is more than simple joy; it is hope. She moves through the world like a woman who has never been told, You must be crazy! for the crime of speaking her ambitions aloud. Before writing became her full-time gig, she thrived in corporate America -- working in investment banking for JPMorgan Chase and Merrill Lynch. Then she transitioned to publishing, eventually establishing her own English language magazine, Inside Mexico, from 2005 to 2009 with her husband and fellow writer, Aran Shetterly. So for her, writing this story was more of a dream initially. This book really came about the way I think a lot of these engineering and math things did, she said. You come up with a plan, but then youve got to take one step and another step, and then break the whole thing down into tiny parts. The same is true for this project.Shetterlys steps included archival research and personal interviews. The details of her book are rich with first-person experiences, like this line from chapter five, that dissects the womens treatment in their work cafeteria: A?white cardboard sign on a table in the back of the cafeteria beckoned them, its crisply stenciled black letters spelling out the lunchroom hierarchy: COLORED COMPUTERS.?These very intimate accounts provided the pages a very deep understanding of the dedication and strength of these women.Hidden Figures, as a project, is the revelation of those previously unrecognized women. It reads like a family history for distant cousins who dont come around too often. Shetterly quilts together pieces of the stories she painstakingly gathered over the years until the tapestry was deep, engaging and warm. Her mission, both in writing the book and heading The Human Computer Project, is to help little girls around the world -- in particular those of color -- know that women who look like them and share their history helped make the United States great.Imagine if every girl was able to say, as Shetterly writes in the introduction of her book, the face of science was brown. OKLAHOMA CITY -- There were few indications before August that Russell Westbrook would be so willing to be the hero downtrodden Thunder fans needed. For years, the sometimes combustible Westbrook toiled in Kevin Durants shadow. He often was viewed as the talented, selfish player who was as likely to get in Durants way as he was to make a winning play. His flashy style seemed at odds with small-market Oklahoma City so when Durant, who seemingly was a better fit in OKC, left for rival Golden State, fear that Westbrook would bolt for a larger market increased. He didnt. He chose to re-sign with the Thunder and now that he has answered the call, its time to deliver. We know a few things about Russell at this point, Thunder general manager Sam Presti said. Hes going to bring his lunch pail every day. Hes going to compete. Hes going to inspire. Hes going to show great conviction and courage to his teammates, to the city, to the organization. And from there, we have to figure out how that comes together. That trek begins Wednesday in Philadelphia when Oklahoma City officially tips off the post-Durant era in its season opener against the 76ers.Westbrook is now the unquestioned leader of the Thunder and player folks behind the scenes knew -- the thoughtful, humble, giving man -- has more readily come to the surface. He has gone to great lengths to connect with Thunder fans in recent months.Among other things, he unveiled his new line of True Religion clothing near downtown Oklahoma City and he attended an Oklahoma home football game against Louisiana-Monroe wearing a custom-made Sooners jersey. When he was introduced to the crowd before the Thunders preseason home opener, he got the kinds of cheers normally reserved for a return from injury.Westbrook seems more at ease on the court, too. His preseason play seemed more effortless than electric, with an occasional flourish.I want the team to play how they want to play, Westbrook said. I mean, its not totally up to me how we play. You have to adjust to the team you have and adjust on a night-in, night-out basis on how you want to play. You want to play fast some nights and you want to play slow. I think it depends on the game, on the situation, who is on the floor. He is poised to put up astronomical numbers this season as he tries to keep the Thunder among the NBA elite.Last season Westbrook averaged 23.5 points and career highs of 10.4 assists and 7.8 rebounds. He posted 18 triple-doubles, the most for a player since Magic Johnson had 18 during the 1981-82 season. The two-time All-Star MVP and former scoring champion could do more damage without Durant, but the Thunder dont want too much pressure on him.I think we have to be able to play in a way thats not just relying on him to do everything and create every single shot, whether its him making the shot or making the play for another guy, Thunder forward Nick Collison said.Westbrook already has left an impression on his new backcourt mate Victor Oladipo, who was acquired in the trade that sent defensive enforcer Serge Ibaka to Orlando. After working with Russ, I can see the intensity in how serious he was about his craft, Oladipo said. But one thing that I realized that after guarding him for three years -- I can see why hes so effective at what he does. I definitely stole that from him, and Im going to take it and run as fast as I can with it.How Oladipo and the rest of the Thunder do in keeping up with Russell will determine how much success the team will have. Oklahoma City is no longer considered the team to beat in championship conversations, and thats fine with Westbrook. He said the team embraces the underdog role.I love it, he said. I love it, man. I think its a great challenge, not just for myself, but for our whole team. I think just from talking to the guys throughout the summer, they understand that. They want to win. They want to get better.---Follow Cliff Brunt on Twitter (at)CliffBruntAP . Colton Sissons Jersey . COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Even when it would have helped Ohio State for its rival to win, the Buckeyes still couldnt bring themselves to cheer for Michigan. After falling into a precarious scenario in the Big Ten East Division race thanks to the upset loss for the Wolverines on Saturday night against Iowa, the Buckeyes made it clear that the bad blood between the programs trumped any self-interest in preserving a three-way tiebreaker that would potentially allow them to advance to play for the conference title. The Buckeyes were always going to need to win their closing games to stay in contention for a Big Ten championship, including the huge showdown with the Wolverines on Nov. 26. But now theyll also need Penn State to lose once more to avoid losing a head-to-head tiebreaker with the Nittany Lions. For now, though, that doesnt appear to be troubling the Buckeyes. No, I dont root for them, junior captain Raekwon McMillan said. No. I mean, as a player and as our rival, I really just dont root for them at all. Its not a thing that I do, and I dont feel like anybody at our university should, either. It is what it is.None of my teammates were mad about them losing. That was our rival. We did want to play the best, highest-ranked team or whatever, but thats all I have to say about that. The Buckeyes might be comforted by their improved chances of making the four-team Colleege Football Playoff field without winning the Big Ten -- with a potential path opening up ahead of them thanks to not only Michigans loss but also upsets of previously unbeaten Clemson and Washington.dddddddddddd.Ohio State moved up to No. 2 in the AP poll on Sunday. And, after checking in at No. 5, according to the playoff selection committee a week ago, it will likely move into position to contend for the national championship when the new rankings are released Tuesday night. And the ability to stay there will ultimately come down to winning Saturday against Michigan State and in the finale against the Wolverines, whether they get help in the division or not.You know, no, not really; we dont really ever want to root for those guys, center Pat Elflein said. It was just an exciting football game to watch. I was watching with my roommates, and youre thinking about those scenarios and all that, but what I said is we have to win out. First win against Michigan State, then win the rest of our games, if we even want to dabble with the playoff and the championship. We have to win Saturday before we can even talk about that.I was watching, though. I knew No. 2, 3 and 4 went down. It was an exciting night of football -- a lot of upsets. Arnold Palmer charged across the golf course and into Americas living rooms with a go-for-broke style that made a country club sport popular for the everyman. At ease with presidents and the public, he was on a first-name basis with both.Through his remarkable life, he never lost that personal touch. Thats what made him the King.Palmer died Sunday in Pittsburgh. He was 87.Arnold transcended the game of golf, Jack Nicklaus said. He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. He was a legend. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He took the game from one level to a higher level, virtually by himself. Along the way, he had millions of adoring fans.He was the king of our sport and always will be.Alastair Johnston, the CEO of Arnold Palmer Enterprises, said Palmer was admitted to the UPMC Hospital on Thursday for some cardiovascular work and weakened over the last few days. The memories of Palmer went beyond his golf and to the people who couldnt take their eyes off him.He was an iconic American who treated people with respect and warmth, and built a unique legacy through his ability to engage with fans, Johnston said.President Barack Obama tweeted about Palmers death, saying: Heres to The King who was as extraordinary on the links as he was generous to others. Thanks for the memories, Arnold.Palmer ranked among the most important figures in golf history , and it went well beyond his seven major championships and 62 PGA Tour wins. His good looks, devilish grin and hard-charging style of play made the elite sport appealing to one and all. And it helped that he arrived about the same time as television moved into most households, a perfect fit that sent golf to unprecedented popularity. If it wasnt for Arnold, golf wouldnt be as popular as it is now, Tiger Woods said in 2004 when Palmer played in his last Masters. Hes the one who basically brought it to the forefront on TV. If it wasnt for him and his excitement, his flair, the way he played, golf probably would not have had that type of excitement. And thats why hes the king.Beyond his golf, Palmer was a pioneer in sports marketing, paving the way for scores of other athletes to reap in millions from endorsements. Some four decades after his last PGA Tour win, he ranked among the highest-earners in golf.It is not an exaggeration to say there would be no modern-day PGA Tour without Arnold Palmer. There would be no PGA Tour Champions without Arnold Palmer. There would be no Golf Channel without Arnold Palmer, PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement. On the golf course, Palmer was an icon not for how often he won, but the way he did it.He would hitch up his pants, drop a cigarette and attack the flags. With powerful hands wrapped around the golf club, Palmer would slash at the ball with all of his might, twist that muscular neck and squint to see where it went. When he hits the ball, the earth shakes, Gene Littler once said.Palmer rallied from seven shots behind to win a U.S. Open. He blew a seven-shot lead on the back nine to lose a U.S. Open.He was never dull.Im pleased that I was able to do what I did from a golfing standpoint, Palmer said in 2008, two years after he played in his last official tournament. I would like to think that I left them more than just that.He left behind a gallery known as Arnies Army, which began at Augusta National with a small group of soldiers from nearby Fort Gordon, and grew to include a legion of fans from every corner of the globe.Palmer stopped playing the Masters in 2004 and hit the ceremonial tee shot every year until 2016, when age began to take a toll and he struggled with his balance. It was Palmer who gave golf the modern version of the Grand Slam -- winning all four professional majors in one year. He came up with the idea after winning the Masters and U.S. Open in 1960. Palmer was runner-up at the British Open, later calling it one of the biggest disappointments of his career. But his appearance alone invigorated the British Open, which Americans had been ignoring for years.Palmer never won the PGA Championship, one major short of capturing a career Grand Slam. But then, standard he set went beyond trophies. It was the way he treated people, looking everyone in the eye with a smile and a wink. He signed every autograph, making sure it was legible. He made every fan feel like an old friend.Palmer never liked being referred to as The King, but the name stuck. It was back in the early `60s. I was playing pretty good, winning a lot of tournaments, and someone gave a speech and referred to me as `The King, Palmer said in a November 2011 interview with The Associated Press.I dont bask in it. I dont relish it. I tried for a long time to stop that and, he said, pausing to shrug, there was no point.Palmer played at least one PGA Tour event every season for 52 consecutive years, ending with the 2004 Masters. He spearheaded the growth of the 50-and-older Champions Tour, winning 10 times and drawing some of the biggest crowds. He was equally successful off with golf course design, a wine collection, and apparel that included his famous logo of an umbrella. He bought the Bay Hill Club & Lodge upon making his winter home in Orlando, Florida, and in 2007 the PGA Tour changed the name of the tournament to the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The combination of iced tea and lemonade is known as an Arnold Palmer. Padraig Harrington recalls eating in an Italian restaurant in Miami when he heard a customer order one.Think about it, Harrington said. You dont go up there and order a `Tiger Woods at the bar. You can go up there and order an `Arnold Palmer in this country and the barman -- he was a young man -- knew what the drink was. Thats in a league of your own.Palmer was born Sept. 10, 1929, in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, the oldest of four children. His father, Deacon, became the greenskeeper at Latrobe Country Club in 1921 and the club pro in 1933.He had two loves as a boy -- strapping on his holster with toy guns to play Cowboys and Indians, and playing golf. It was on the golf course that Palmer grew to become so strong, with barrel arms and hands of iron. When I was 6 years old, my father put me on a steel-wheeled tractor, he recalled in a 2011 interview with the AP. I had to stand up to turn the wheel. Thats one thing made me strong. The other thing was I pushed mowers. In those days, there were no motors on anything except the tractor. The mowers to cut greens with, you pushed. And it was this, he said, patting his arms, that made it go.Palmer joined the PGA Tour in 1955 and won the Canadian Open for the first of his 62 titles. He went on to win four green jackets at Augusta National, along with the British Open in 1961 and 1962 and the U.S. Open in 1960, perhaps the most memorable of his seven majors because it defined his style. You could never count him out.Palmer went head to head with Nicklaus two years later in a U.S. Open, the start of one of golfs most famous rivalries. It was one-sided. Nicklaus went on to win 18 majors and was regarded as golfs greatest champion. Palmer won two more majors after that loss, and his last PGA Tour win came in 1973 at the Bob Hope Classic.Golf writer Tom Callahan once described the difference between Nicklaus and Palmer this way: Its as though God said to Nicklaus, You will have skills like no other, then whispered to Palmer, But they will love you more.I think he brought a lot more to the game than his game, Nicklaus said in 2009. What I mean by that is, theres no question about his record and his ability to play the game. He was very, very good at that. But he obviously brought a lot more. He brought the hitch of his pants, the flair that he brought to the game, the fans that he brought into the game.It made him a beloved figure, and brought riches long after he stopped competing. That started with a handshake agreement with IMG founder Mark McCormack to represent Palmer in contract negotiations. Palmers image was everywhere, from motor oil to ketchup to financial services companies. Even as late as 2011, nearly 40 years after his last PGA Tour win, Palmer was No. 3 on Golf Digests list of top earners at $36 million a year. He trailed only Woods and Phil Mickelson.Palmers other love was aviation. He piloted his first aircraft in 1956, and 10 years later had a license to fly jets that now are the standard mode of transportation for so many top players, even though the majority of them are merely passengers. Palmer flew planes the way he played golf. He set a record in 1976 when he circumnavigated the globe in 57 hours, 25 minutes and 42 seconds in a Lear 36. He continued flying his Cessna Citation 10 until he failed to renew his license at age 81, just short of 20,000 hours in the cockpit.Through it all, he touched more people than he could possibly remember, though he sure tried. When asked about the fans he attracted at Augusta National, Palmer once said, Hell, I know most of them by name.Only four other players won more PGA Tour events than Palmer -- Sam Snead, Nicklaus, Woods and Hogan.Palmers first wife, Winnie, died in 1999. They had two daughters, and grandson Sam Saunders plays on the PGA Tour. Palmer married Kathleen (Kit) Gawthrop in 2005.Details on a memorial service and burial will be announced later.Palmer was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1997, which was caught early. He returned to golf a few months later, winking at fans as he waded through the gallery, always a smile and a signature for them.Im not interested in being a hero, Palmer said, implying that too much was made about his return from cancer. I just want to play some golf. That, perhaps, is his true epitaph. Palmer lived to play. South Dakota State, which has never had a 10-win season, entered the FCS playoffs with the MVFCs automatic bid as the result of handing NDSU its only loss. NDSU won the only two prior meetings in the FCS playoffs (28-3 in 2012 and 27-24 in 2014) as part of its NCAA-record five straight national titles. South Dakota State pulled out the 19-17 win over the Bison on Oct. 15 when quarterback Taryn Christion hit wide receiver Jake Wieneke for a 2-yard touchdown with one second remaining. In that game, Christion rushed for a season-high 141 yards to go along with 303 passing yards. The MVFCs offensive player of the year is part of a lethal trio with Wieneke and Goedert -- all three were finalists for the STATS FCS Walter Payton Award. Some of the Jackrabbits strongest defensive games have come against their best opponents, including the 10-7 second-round playoff win over Villanova. Rozeboom and LB Jesse Bobbit will be key against the NDSU run game. The Jackrabbits have made winning adjustments at halftime, outscoring opponents 122-56 in the third quarter. North Dakota State is 17-0 at the Fargodome in FCS playoff games and has won a Division I-high 82 games (seven more than Alabama) since the start of its first national title season in 2011. The Bison are particularly strong at defending the run (104.3 ypg), but they will have to get pressure on Christion to keep Goedert and Wieneke from having big games. The defense, set back by injury, is seeking a healthy return by senior linebacker Pierre Gee-Tucker. Stick is steady and efficient leading the offense, and that has helped the Bison to a plus-nine turnover margin. The run game was back to full strength in a 45-7 second-round win over San Diego as King Frazier and Bruce Anderson produced with Stick and Dunn, the teams leading rusher this season. The starting offensive linemen average 6-foot-5?, 312 pounds.Up Next -- The winner will play either No. 5 seed Sam Houston State (12-0) or No. 4 seed James Madison (11-1) in the FCS semifinals on Dec. 16 or Dec. 17.Prediction -- It will be hard for either team to overcome turnovers because the defenses will be fierce. Christion is strong enough as a passer, so the Bison cant let him dictate the game again with his legs. North Dakota State 24-20. Paul Martin Jersey . TEMPE, Ariz. -- Arizona State and its new quarterback turned an uncomfortably close game into a fourth-quarter blowout.Manny Wilkins passed for 180 yards, ran for 89 and a touchdown and even hurdled a would-be tackler in his first college start and the Sun Devils pulled away for a 44-13 victory over FCS foe Northern Arizona on Saturday night.Arizona State led just 10-6 before scoring on its final seven possessions. The second half was about more what I expected, Sun Devils coach Todd Graham said, and the first half was nerve-wracking. We expected to score a lot more points in the first half than we did. They scored 24 points in the fourth quarter.Well be fine, Wilkins said. I take complete accountability for that (the slow start) and next week well get rolling faster.Freshman NKeal Harry took a lateral from Wilkins and raced 34 yards for a touchdown and Kalen Ballage ran 30 yards for a score in the outburst.Northern Arizonas Case Cookus completed 23 of 33 passes for 369 yards, including an 87-yard touchdown to Elijah Marks. Marks had eight catches for 174 yards.Wilkins, a redshirt sophomore who was named the starter by coach Todd Graham on Friday, completed 20 of 27 passes with one interception. He had some things you see a first-time starter do, Graham said, and then he did some great things.Zane Gonzalez kicked three field goals, including a career-long 53-yarder, for the Sun Devils, who havent lost to the Lumberjacks since 1938.At times, we showed ourselves to be very capable; a team that can play at a high tempo, NAU coach Jerome Souers said. But what Im concerned about mostly is our ability to deal with adversity that came in the second half. The game looked like an Arizona State romp at the start.Ballage returned the opening kickoff 27 yards and the Sun Devils went 44 yards on seven consecutive running plays with Wilkins running 13 for the touchdown. The Lumberjacks took the second-half kickoff, with Cookus completing passes of 39, 14 and 12 yards, and advanced to the Sun Devils 1-inch line. But a false start penalty and delay of game pushed them back and Haacks 23-yard field goal cut Arizona Staates lead to 10-6.ddddddddddddGonzalezs 53-yarder boosted the ASU advantage to 13-6 with 7:35 left in the third quarter.Arizona State linebacker Marcus Ball was tossed from the game after he was called for targeting in a helmet-to-helmet hit with NAU receiver Jabril Taylor. Ball must sit out the first half of the Sun Devils game against Texas Tech next Saturday. Graham said linebacker Salamo Fiso and defensive lineman Ami Latu didnt play because of disciplinary reasons.STRANGE PLAYSWhen Wilkins took off up the middle in the second quarter he literally hurdled North Arizonas Keith Graham. The run helped set up Gonzalezs 33-yard field goal. And as the first half ended, Cookus let it fly in a `Hail Mary under extreme pressure. The Sun Devils Kareem Orr tried to catch it, but it bounced off his chest and into the hands of Butler at about the 10-yard line and he took off toward the end zone. But his toe barely went out of bounds at the Sun Devils 2-yard line and the half ended.Northern Arizona had the ball at the end only because of another bizarre occurrence. Lumberjacks punter Dylan Kegans dropped the snap and then kicked the ball 13 yards downfield, where it bounced off the helmet of a Sun Devil and into the arms of Northern Arizonas Corbin Jountti for a first down.THE TAKEAWAYNorthern Arizona: The Lumberjacks are picked to win the Big Sky and they stayed with the Sun Devils most of the night. Cookus, a sophomore, looks to put up big numbers when Northern Arizona drops to competition its level.Arizona State: The Sun Devils and their young quarterback finally found their rhythm late in the third quarter to give them a boost of confidence with the Red Raiders coming to town next week.UP NEXTNorthern Arizona drops down considerably in the level of competition when the Lumberjacks travel to Western Illinois next Saturday.Arizona State needed their late surge to gain some confidence because the Sun Devils face a much sterner test when they are host to Texas Tech next Saturday. MILAN -- Chievo Verona maintained its impressive start to the season by beating Pescara 2-0 to move to within two points of Serie A leader Juventus on Saturday.Substitute Riccardo Meggiorini broke the deadlock in the 76th minute, latching onto Valter Birsas ball over the top, rounding Pescara goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri, and slotting it into the empty net.Meggiorini had a hand in the second, too, winning back possession to spark a counterattack which saw Lucas Castro set up Roberto Inglese five minutes from time.Chievo moved to provisional fourth, level on points with third-placed Lazio, which won 3-0 at Udinese. All the teams around them in the table play on Sunday, with Juventus visiting Empoli, while second-place Napoli travels to Atalanta.Ciro Immobile, who was called up to the Italy squad earlier in the day for the World Cup qualifiers against Spain and Macedonia, scored in each half. UPPER ARLINGTON, Ohio -- Miguel Angel Jimenez was back on top on a Saturday, this time in the U.S. Senior Open at difficult Scioto County Club. The 52-year-old Spanish player was looking for a better Sunday afternoon result after he missed chances in his past two events.Jimenez put himself in position to break out of the title funk Saturday. He finished a 1-under 69 in gusty wind and sheets of rain to take a 1-stroke lead. He was in a lot better shape in Scotland and Minnesota in the past two tournaments -- and came up empty.Three weeks ago at Carnoustie in the Senior British Open, Jimenez took a 4-stroke lead into the last day, only to shoot 75 and tie for third -- 3 strokes behind winner Paul Broadhurst. Last week in the 3M Championship, Jimenez was a stroke ahead entering the final round and ended up losing when Joe Durant shot 63 and eagled the first hole of a playoff.Just keep playing golf and give myself patience. Thats the main thing, Jimenez said. Whatever happens happens. Obviously, at the Open in Scotland, I lost that tournament there without playing bad, and here tomorrow we have to play 18 holes, and whatever happens happens. Just keep focused and enjoy yourself. Thats the main thing.Jimenez won in March in Mississippi for his third career PGA Tour Champions victory. He has 15 regular European Tour victories, the most recent in the 2014 Spanish Open at a tour-record 50 years, 133 days. The Mechanic is famous for the quirky, fun-loving ways that have prompted some to call him The Most Interesting Man in the World.Of course, you have to enjoy yourself, and I enjoy myself, Jimenez said. You look at my office, no? Its a great life, no? Thats what I want to do in my life is play golf. I will do what I want to do in my life for a living, and golf is not my job. Its also my hobby. Of course, when I finish here, Im going to have a bbig, fat cigar with a nice glass of wine and enjoy my wife and my family and my people who are here.ddddddddddddJimenez had a 3-under 207 total on Jack Nicklaus boyhood course. Gene Sauers was second after a 71. Ian Woosnam (70), Loren Roberts (70) and senior newcomer Billy Mayfair (75) were tied for third at 1 over.Jimenez was one of just four players who were below par for the day. Three strokes behind Joey Sindelar entering the round, Jimenez had four birdies and three bogeys, with the three bogeys coming in a four-hole stretch. After he made two birdies on the front nine, he birdied the hole 12, bogeyed 13 and 14, birdied 15, bogeyed 16 and finished with two pars as sheets of driving rain rolled in on top of the suffocating heat and humidity that have worn players down all week. The conditions, they are tough today, especially because of the wind, Jimenez said. The greens were softer on the first two rounds, but its the gusting wind there that [makes it] not easy to choose the club, the right club. Sometimes it will go a place that you dont [want] to.Sauers battled the wind and had four birdies and five bogeys. The heat, the wind, the rain on the last hole -- it was a brutal day, said the 53-year-old Sauers, winless on the senior tour.Sindelar had a 77 to drop into a tie for sixth at 2 over.Golfs hard, the 58-year-old former Ohio State player said. U.S. Opens harder. And I thought, for the most part, I was pretty happy with the way I played. It wasnt horrible. Just a couple of uglies, and it played hard out there. Problem is, weve got a pretty good guy out there in the lead and a couple more really good ones right behind him.First-round leader Vijay Singh was 6 over. He followed his opening 66 with two 75s.
