HOUSTON -- Chris Sale wasnt patting himself on the back on the day he became this seasons first 14-game winner. To be honest I probably had the least to do with this win today, Sale said.Dioner Navarro drove in a season-high four runs, Sale settled down after a shaky start to pitch seven-plus innings and the Chicago White Sox beat the Houston Astros 7-6 on Saturday.Sale (14-2) allowed four runs in the first three innings before settling in to yield just two hits and an unearned run the rest of the way. He allowed six hits and tied a season high by fanning nine.He said the key to locking in after his early struggles on Saturday was simple.Just trying to pull my weight, he said. My guys picked me up right from the start. So I felt like it was my time to give them some support back. It was a grind from the get-go. My guys pulled me out and we got ourselves a win.He became the first AL-pitcher to get 14 wins before the All-Star break since David Wells went 15-2 in 2000.Navarro drove in a pair with a triple in the second inning to put Chicago up 2-1. The White Sox were trailing in the fifth when his two-run single made it 5-4.J.B. Shuck hit a solo homer in the fourth and had an RBI triple in Chicagos two-run eighth inning.Rookie A.J. Reed hit his first career homer off David Robertson to make it 7-6 with two outs in the ninth before Robertson struck out Colby Rasmus for his 22nd save.Jose Altuve homered and drove in three runs for the Astros, who had a five-game winning streak snapped.Houston starter Doug Fister (8-4) allowed nine hits and five runs while walking five in 4? innings for his second straight loss.He ran into a couple of things. He had a high pitch count early, manager A.J. Hinch said. They made him work. He wasnt very sharp. The five walks hurt him and the home run.Altuve gave Houston a 1-0 lead with his home run to the seats in right field with two outs in the first.Chicago took the lead with Navarros one-out triple. Avisail Garcia walked after that, but Navarro was tagged out at home on a fielders choice before Fister retired Tim Andersonn to limit the damage.ddddddddddddThe White Sox had a chance to pad their lead in the third, but Adam Eaton couldnt beat the throw home on a two-out single by Brett Lawrie. Eaton leaped over the head of catcher Evan Gattis on the play, but Gattis was still able to apply the tag.Danny Worth drew a walk to start Houstons third before a bunt single by Jake Marisnick. Houston tied it at 2-2 when Worth scored on a sacrifice bunt by Marwin Gonzalez and took the lead on an RBI single by Altuve. After a short coaching visit to the mound, Carlos Correa pushed the lead to 4-2 on a run-scoring single.Sale settled down after that, retiring 13 of the next 14 batters he faced, until George Springer singled to start the eighth. Gonzalez reached on an error by Todd Frazier after that to end Sales day.He just finds a way to finally find a groove, manager Robin Ventura said. Once he got the lead you just knew he was going to be able to extend it and get through it.Sale, who tossed a complete game against Houston on May 19, improved to 5-1 with a 1.31 ERA and 65 strikeouts in six career starts against the Astros.Shucks two-out home run to the seats in right field got Chicago within 4-3 in the fourth.TRAINERS ROOMWhite Sox: OF Melky Cabrera is expected to return Monday after missing the past four games with a sprained right wrist. Quintana looks to get back on track after going 0-7 with a 4.58 ERA in his past nine starts.Astros: Collin McHugh (5-5, 4.58) is scheduled to pitch for Houston on Sunday. Mercedes broke the mechanics curfew overnight at the U.S. Grand Prix in order to make a precautionary change of the fuel system on Lewis Hamiltons car.In order to prevent team members working unnecessarily long hours, the FIA imposes an eight-hour curfew between Friday and Saturday for paddock personnel working on the cars. In Austin the curfew ran between 23:00-07:00 but Mercedes mechanics worked within that time to fit a new fuel system.Teams get two exceptions from the curfew per season, so no penalty will be imposed on Mercedes which had not broken curfew at any point this season ahead of this weekend. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Every football fan has been through the experience: They watch their favorite team flounder around on offense for most of four quarters, then they slice up a defense with the two-minute drill.Naturally, everyone wonders why teams dont just run their hurry-up offense all the time. Its a totally different situation there at the end. Ive been asked that a lot, said quarterback Alex Smith, who led the Chiefs through a near-flawless two-minute exercise in their victory at Denver on Sunday night. You want to play like that all the time but its different.Smith had a hard time explaining why its different, but that doesnt change the reality. The Chiefs struggled simply to pick up first downs until they were faced with an eight-point deficit in the closing minutes, and marched 42 yards for the tying touchdown and 2-point conversion. They went on to win 30-27 on a field goal by Cairo Santos in overtime. That defense is a good defense and they have game-changing players, Smith said. You look back at their Super Bowl run, the sack-fumbles, the touchdowns and the things they can create. I know we didnt have success early, but we didnt give them those. We eliminated those. Those are the things teams feast off of. We were able to hang around and make adjustments. And then we were able to make plays down the stretch. The Chiefs have been criticized all season for their offensive production, which ranks in the bottom third of the NFL in most major categories. Smith has endured the brunt of it, too, not only as the most visible part of the offense but also because of his own erratic play.Hes missed open wide receivers. He rarely pushes the ball downfield. He has been reluctant to run. And he seems content to check down at the first sign of trouble. But when the pressure was Sunday, the veteran quarterback responded. He kept finding unheralded wide receivers and tight end Travis Kelce for first downs, and he threw a dart to Tyreek Hill with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to help force the exxtra session.ddddddddddddYeah, its weird, but I think the crazier it gets, the calmer he is, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said this week. Thats just how hes wired. It seems to just calm everybody else down. Its a unique thing. Its one of the things that makes him a great player, I think. He handles that very well.It wasnt always this way. The Chiefs have struggled going into halftime and at the end of games the past couple of years. But they spent extra time on the two-minute drill during the summer, and again in training camp, and it has paid off in a big way this season. They needed a similarly frantic comeback to beat San Diego in their opener. So again, shouldnt the Chiefs want to run that tempo all the time? The obvious answer to that is yes, co-offensive coordinator Matt Nagy said, but you dont get away from what your identity is as an offense. And you have to understand, the defense is playing differently when youre in the two-minute mode, too.The Chiefs (8-3) head to Atlanta on Sunday before turning around to face Oakland on a short week at Arrowhead Stadium. Both offenses are dynamic, and the Falcons may be the best in the NFL, so there will be pressure on Smith and the rest of the Chiefs offense to keep pace.At least, for the first three quarters. They seem to do just fine in the final minutes of the fourth.A lot of games in this league come down to that, Smith said, so its something we work hard on. Its one of those things where the more you practice it, the better you are at it. Its all of us being better in a situation like that.Game notes DL Kendall Reyes (knee) and DT Dontari Poe (back spasms) did not work Thursday. ... Santos was chosen the AFC special teams player of the month. (STATS) -- The only unbeaten FCS team remaining made its biggest statement of the season in its final regular season game Saturday.Sam Houston State has some more statements -- and wins -- planned for the postseason, entering it Sunday as the top-ranked team in the STATS FCS Top 25.Shortly before the NCAA announced its FCS playoff field, the Bearkats (11-0) gained 111 of the 151 first-place votes and 3,676 points to solidify the top ranking in the national media poll for the sixth straight week. It came on the heels of a 59-23 trouncing of then-No. 11 Central Arkansas in what basically was the Southland Conference championship game. You cant get any better than what we just did, third-year coach K.C. Keeler said, Eleven-0, conference champions, pretty much dominated almost every single game we played. It was a great accomplishment. Its two seasons. And this season that we just had here -- this regular season -- its the single greatest season Ive ever been around. All but one of the teams in the top 10 earned at least a share of their conference title, and the exception -- Villanova -- features the sentimental story line of a retiring head coach. Jacksonville State (10-1) was No. 2 in the final regular season poll after it finished off an unbeaten season in the Ohio Valley Conference for the third straight year.Eastern Washington (10-1) and North Dakota State (10-1) remained No. 3 and 4, respectively, after both earned a share of their conference title. EWU made it four Big Sky Conference titles in five seasons and NDSU made it six straight in the Missouri Valley Football Conference, moving into the playoffs with the goal of extending its record five straight FCS national titles.CAA Football James Madison (10-1) moved up one spot to No. 5, flip-flopping with The Citadel (10-1), which lost for the first time against North Carolina from the FBS level. South Dakota State (8-3), an MVFC co-champ, was No. 7 and North Dakota (9-2), a Big Sky co-champ, No. 8.Villanova (8-3) carried a No. 9 ranking after it sent coach Andy Talley into the playoffs in his 32nd and final season on the Wildcats sideline. Charleston Southern (7-3), which earned a share of its second straight Big South Conference crown, was No. 10.Chattanooga (8-3) moved up one spot to No. 11 after playing to a 31-3 loss at Alabama that wouldnt be registered by many FBS teams. Then it was Richmond (8-3); Youngstown State (8-3); Central Arkansas (9-2); Coastal Carolina (9-2); Grambling State (8-1); North Carolina A&T (9-2); Lehigh (9-2), the Patriot League champ; Wofford (8-3); and North Carolina Central (9-2), the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference champion.Rounding out the Top 25 were No. 21 Cal Poly (7-4), New Hampshire (7-4), Samford (7-4), and two teams appearing for the first time this season, Pioneer Football League champ San Diego (9-1) and Weber State (7-4).Eleven FCS conferences had at least one ranked team. The Big Sky, CAA and SoCon led with four each, the Missouri Valley had three, the MEAC and Southland two each, and the Big South, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Pioneer and SWAC had one each. Coastal Carolina is an FCS independent.A national panel of sports information and media relations directors, broadcasters, writers and other dignitaries select the STATS FCS Top 25. In the voting, a first-place vote is worth 25 points, a second-place vote 24 points, all the way down to one point for a 25th-place vote. The final Top 25 will follow the FCS championship game, to be held Jan. 7 in Frisco, Texas. LUCIE, Fla.Sky Sports Tennis analyst Peter Fleming believes Andy Murrays rollercoaster win over Kei Nishikori was one of the greatest matches he has seen. The world No 1 needed three hours and 20 minutes to survive the longest three-set match in ATP World Tour Finals history to battle past fifth-seed Nishikori 6-7 (9-11) 6-4 6-4, with the first set alone taking 85 minutes. Murrays refusal to be outlasted by the obdurate Nishikori keeps him on course to retain top spot in the ATP rankings at the end of the year. Highlights of Andy Murray v Kei Nishikori from the ATP World Tour Finals Fleming was impressed by the Scots tenacity to hang in during nervy periods in the match and show amazing powers of recovery to all-but assure his semi-final spot. That was one of the best tennis matches Ive ever seen, said Fleming. The quality of tennis from both guys, who were whacking groundstrokes as hard as they could seemingly, and making incredible defensive saves. Murrays fighting capacity is immense. Murray beats Nishikori in epic Andy Murray edges out Kei Nishikori in epic at ATP World Tour Finals Both guys were down so many times and they both fought back from 15-40, 0-30 and Nishikori very nearly got back into the final set after being down 5-1.It was really fun and we might even see another match or two like that as this week progresses. Murray had to dig deep to beat Nishikori in what was the longest three-set match in Tour Finals history Fleming feels Murray will pick himself up again for his final round-robin match against US Open champion Stan Wawrinka on Friday without too many concerns.ddddddddddddm sure hell be stiff tomorrow, but hes strong - hes an animal, said Fleming. I think physically, he might still be stiff on Friday, but I dont think its going to hurt him enough to keep him from winning. I just think hes been playing so well at the moment that he has the edge over everybody. This was the best point in a dramatic tiebreak which saw Murray with three set points and Nishikori with five Even after more than two-and-a-half hours on court, Murray was still going strong in the final set, and although his serve failed to fire as well as he had hoped for, Fleming believes that was all down to Nishikoris intense pressure. His serve comes and goes sometimes, added Fleming. Playing against Nishikori is difficult because he returns serve very well and just adds a little more pressure onto the server and Andys serve wasnt like it has been in the past - that will be something to work on tomorrow. Group 1 racing returned to Melbourne with a double header at Caulfield, where the 1800 metres proved no issue whatsoever for Black Heart Bart as the Darren Weir juggernaut rolled on with victory in the Underwood Stakes. With three wins at the top level in his past five starts, and finishing second in the other two, the six-year-old gelding proved hes a serious performer as the distances increase.Ridden by Brad Rawiller, the $2.25 UBET favourite beat home the Hayes and Dabernig-trained He Or She -- who continues to impress -- with Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes winner Lucia Valentina in third. The Rupert Clarke Stakes over 1400-metres saw Ciaron Maher train his seventh career Group 1 winner as Bon Aurum had the race conditions pan out just to his liking.Bon Aurum, with just 52kg on his back, settled nicely in the second half of the field, finished strongly and fended off the Weir-trained Voodoo Lad ($3.80) who was shooting for a treble of wins.Legless Veuvue was a firmer ($17 into $12) in betting before the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m) and delivered accordingly for trainer Stuart Webb. She is one of about 15 horses in work for Webb, who believed she would be at her peak in three weeks time as she still showed signs of her winter coat.New Zealander Tony Pike wasnt expecting Sacred Elixir to be ready to win over 1400 metres, but the Group 1 J.J. Atikins Stakes winner in Brisbane in June was too good for his opposition in the Group 3 Caulfield Guineas Prelude.Headline ActsBlack Heart Bart and Darren Weir: How does he do it? Darren Weir has more than 100 horses in work at any one time. Its a very big business and it is such a feat how he manages to notch so many winners week after week, including a treble on Saturday at Caulfield. The doubts whether Bart would be as effective at a mile and beyond were cast well aside after his stylish 2.5-length win. It shows that his second-placing to Palentino in the Makybe Diva Stakes over 1600 metres at Flemington a fortnight ago was just down to Palentino excelling at that track, and that Black Heart Bart might -- as Weir put it - have presented too early in the run that day.Weir said he never had any doubt over the six-year-olds ability to be just as good over the longer distances, but he mentioned the horse wasnt fully tuned up yet and there was still more improvement to come. The Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) on Oct. 8 will be his next outing.Ciaron Maher: A bumper Spring Carnival may just have kicked off for the Maher stable with Bon Aurums Rupert Clarke victory. ESPNs feature last week, showed how there are some very exciting prospects still to come over the next six weeks.Talking PointsFacing the breeze head on: When visiting the Caulfield track next time, look towards the outside rail at about the 450-metres mark. Attached high on a pole is a very strategically placed yellow windsock. In the straight run of about 500-metres toward the home turn, there can often be a stiff breeze blowing towards the oncoming field. Cover in the run can often be a real advantage for those horses sitting off the pace. The breeze on Saturday was substantial enough to be noticeable, and it made the task of leading throughout and winning nearly impossible. Bon Aurum was one such beneficiary. Patiently ridden, as described by Maher, Bon Aurum was able to get the required protection from that headwind to save his best for last.Xtravagant was a failure once again finishing 12th behind Bon Aurum. Damien Oliver commented that he just wasnt coming up as expected this time, but facing the breeze while leading along the railway side wouldnt have helped. In the Rupert Clarke post-script, winning rider Kerrin McEvoy said that questions remained over whether Bon Aurum would be as effective over a mile or further. It will pay to keep a close watch.Taking on Winx:?Bring it on, Brad Rawiller said when asked about how Black Heart Bart would measure up against Winx in the Cox Plate. Second-placed aboard He Or She, Craig Williams was just as effusive in his assessment of Darren Weir causing a Cox Plate upset result.Wound in from $21 to $14 for the Oct. 22 weight-for-age feature, Weir was confident on Saturday that the 2040 metres at Moonee Valley would pose as little concern as the 1800 metres at Caulfield.EyecatchersRoyal Rapture: Winning form is good form. It is a very old racetrack cliche but it is spot on as far as Royal Rapture is concerned. Set aside the exceptions like Black Caviar and Winx, but horses just dont win five successive metropolitan races in the modern day. Starting at $3.30 -- which was a very unpopular result for bookmakers -- this Weir-trained seven-year-old has done just that across Flemington, Moonee Valley and now Caulfield.Weir said post-race that Royal Rapture was helped by Mihany kicking away at the top of the straight, and the resulting chase saw Royal Rapture stretch out nicely in running to take victory. Royal Rapture will now step up to Group 1 company in the Toorak Handicap over 1600 metres at Caulfield on Oct.8, when he may be one not to overlook with a light weight.Sacred Elixir: Another winner on the day but this gelding threw himself into Group 1 Caulfield Guineas (1600m) calculations with his unexpected victory; unexpected as far as Tony Pike was concerned anyway. Some punters were left lamenting their carelessness in overlooking his Group 1-winning class, especially starting at $8.50 with UBET.Pike and jockey Damien Lane agreed that Sacred Elixir would only get better over further. Most of all, we now know that he can handle the Caulfield circuit that has often brought a good three-year-old undone. Sacred Elixir was a mover in UBETs Caulfield Guineas market firming from $5.50 into $5.BlackbookersMissrock: She was unlucky at Flemington and circumstances failed to favour her once again in the Group 2 Thousand Guineas Prelude (1400m). Settling at the rear of the field and ridden very quietly by Dwayne Dunn, the Robbie Laing-trained filly began weaving her way through the field in the straight. Openings continually closed on her over the final 300 metres, but, once clear, only 50-metres from the line, she made late ground still to finish sixth. There is every reason to suggest that Missrock will be a live chance in the Group 1 Thousand Guineas (1600m) on Oct. 15, for which UBET rate her at $13.Lucia Valentina: It may seem obvious to blackbook a horse who is already a Group 1 winner on two occasions, but this is more just a reminder not to forget her. Since her last trip to Melbourne, where she won over 2000 metres at Group II level, she has won in Hong Kong and Randwick over the same distance at Group 1 and her run-on third placing in the Underwood suggested shes getting back to that level of best. Lucia Valentina is currently a $15 chance with UBET for the Cox Plate, which will be her next start.FlopsWhispering Brook: Forgiven for running second at her first Victorian start at Moonee Valley a fortnight earlier, punters rallied behind the Perth-based Simon Miller-trained filly. Backed from $5 into $2.05, Whispering Brook led for much of the 1400 metres trip before wilting in the straight. Was she a victim of leading into that strong headwind? Either way, jockey Nick Hall said post-race that he would have liked to see more from her in the finish.Archives: Forgive this one or not? Archives was a drifter in betting from $3.90 to $5 but was still well-fancied by analysts. Jockey Craig Williams commented that this Godolphon-owned colt was very aggressive in the run and burnt too much petrol too early together with being hampered at the 600 metres mark. NEW YORK -- At this years U.S. Open, the fashions so bright, you gotta wear shades.Ultra-bright, neon hues of yellow, pink and orange are exploding all over the courts at Flushing Meadows, with players decked out in outfits down to the socks and shoelaces that make a screaming, flashbulb-like assault on the rods and cones. Think a desk full of highlighter pens, only brighter. Its a very cool outfit, said American player Jack Sock, who took the court Wednesday with an all-fluorescent yellow kit, socks and all. Maybe because its New York City, theres that electric feeling and a lot of buzz, excitement, anticipation. ... Loud audiences and loud matches go along with the loud outfits. The neon trend has been building for years and harkens back to the 1990s, when players such as Andre Agassi in his long-hair days struck a rebellious pose. Nike, in particular, is taking it mainstream this year, with well over a dozen players in the mens and womens draws decked out from head to toe in bright yellow, with black and pink accents that only serve to make the color seem brighter. Rafael Nadal stands apart from his Nike comrades in a relatively staid black outfit, but the soles of his feet are festooned in ultra-bright yellow. The color was so ubiquitous that several times in the early rounds, competing players battled it out in the same, official all-yellow Nike line, which the company says takes its cues frrom the bright lights of New York City .dddddddddddd.. bright color spectrums mimic the chromatic shift of neon lights. Is all attention good attention or does it go too far? When 2009 champion Juan Martin del Potro strode on court for his opening match in gleaming yellow shirt, shorts, socks, shoes and headband, one Twitter commenter struck a familiar snarky tone: Be one with the tennis ball. A funny thing about the Tour de France is that it can give its competitors the most fabulous terrain to ride over, but it cannot force them to race. Instead of being the very tricky day full of traps and surprises that Tour teams feared and organizers hoped for, Stage Three of the 100th edition proved to be a bit of a dud: 10 out of 10 visually, with some of the most stunning coastal scenery ever visited by the 110-year-old race, but barely 2 out of 10 for drama. In fact, as pretty as Corsica -- Frances "island of beauty" -- was, riders were just as happy to whiz past it. "Twisty roads like that along the coast, stunning scenery, and Im sure it made for great shots from the helicopter," said race favourite Chris Froome. "But thats not what we were interested in." So be it. In a three-week test of endurance, its simply physically impossible for every stage to be a classic and provide great excitement. There are days, like on Monday, when the peloton decides the priority is to get from A to B safely, get back to the hotel, massage, eat and sleep. To have success at the Tour, you first have to survive it. "The race is always what the riders make of it," the Tour director, Christian Prudhomme, said philosophically. Jan Bakelants was happy. The Belgian rider started the day in the yellow jersey that he won with a clever and gutsy spurt of riding on Sunday, and he will wear it again for at least another day, during the team time trial on Stage Four on Tuesday. The teams will race against the clock, heading off one after the other in aerodynamic helmets, on a pancake-flat, 25-kilometre course in Nice, past the coastal towns airport and along its famous beachside avenue, the Promenade des Anglais. With that very technical and quick ordeal awaiting them, and because coastal headwinds slowed the riders, none of the 21 other teams could be bothered to really try hard to take the lead on Monday from Bakelants. His RadioShack teammates did a grand job of protecting him. They rode much of the stage at the front of the pack, not letting breakaway riders get too far ahead and discouraging other teams from any thoughts of making a concerted assault. Their management of the stage helped make for dull racing -- but it kept Bakelants in yellow. "We never panicked," he said. "We managed the gaps." But Tuesday will more than likely be his last day in the leaders precious jersey. There are 71 riders just one second behind him in the standings. One of them on a team that time trials better than RadioShack will be in yellow next. "We have good riders but havent really trained for the team time trial," said Bakelants. "It will be tough to keep the jersey, but Ive already had it two days and thats special ... Its extraordinary to have worn it." At the end of the stage, in the final 15 kilometres, the racing picked up. Several riders tried and failed to get away from the chasing pack. It came down to a sprint in the last 500 metres. Simon Gerrans, an Australian, threw his front wheel over the line just before Peter Sagan, a Slovakian. Ryder Hesjedal of Victoria is in 26th spot overall, while David Velleux of Cap-Rouge, Que., is 117th, and Svein Tuft of Langley, B.C., is back in 170th. On paper, Stage Three looked daunting: 145.5 kilometres of narrow roads as sinewy as a blood vessel, with very little flat. On television, the coves, the white beaches and cliffs plunging into turquoise seas looked incredible. The riders strung out like a necklace of coloured pearls as they sped along the coastline on a succession of bends so twisty that, among those who rode the route by car, they made queasy mush of iron stomachs. That is why Corsica paid the Tour to come here: To make it look good. The island gave three million euros to the Tours owners for the right to host the first three stages of the 100th edition, and paid another two million euros in other expenses, said Paul Giacobbi, who heads the regional government. That bought "hours and hours and hours" of worldwide television coverage and "one billion spectators," he said. The logistics were complicated. The Tour was transporting itself on seven ships back across the Mediterranean to the French mainland overnight on Monday so it could continue less than 24 hours later on Stage Four, in Nice. After Mondays trek from the port of Ajaccio, two planes whisked the riders quickly away from the finish in Calvi, so they would sleep in hotels on the French coast that same night. This was the Tours first visit to Corsica. Both came away happy. Prudhomme, the race director, said viewing figures in France for the Corsican leg of the race are the highest theyve been in a decade. "That is because of the 100th edition and the beauty of Corsica," he said. Not that Froome and the other contenders for overall victory much cared. They were happy simply to be heading back in one piece to the French mainland -- where the Tour will be decided on stages in the Pyrenees and Alps far more decisive than anything Corsica could offer. "Im quite relieved to be heading off Corsica now," said Froome. "Hopefully, the race will settle down a little bit." Cheap Ravens Jerseys . NEW ORLEANS -- A person familiar with negotiations says the New Orleans Pelicans and second-round draft choice Cheick Diallo have agreed to a three-year contract at the NBA minimum, with a team option in the third season. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the contract has not been announced. If Diallo plays through the end of the contract, it could be worth about $2.5 million. The Pelicans traded up in the second round of last months draft, sending the 39th and 40th overall picks to the Los Angeles Clippers, to select the 6-foot-9 Diallo out of Kansas at 33rd overall.Diallo recently played for the Pelicans NBA Summer League team in Las Vegas, averaging 10.8 points, 9.4 rebounds and 2.2 blocks in five games. I dont think I have to tell you the first team is the Pirates and the second is the Blue Jays. In Sundays games, both teams played 11 inning marathons. The Blue Jays lost their starter in the bottom of the third inning, 40-year-old Ramon Ortiz, to an elbow injury that could be career-ending. The Pirates lost their starter, Jeanmar Gomez, to forearm tightness after he gave up four runs in the first inning. Down early, both teams rallied for dramatic victories; the Jays beating the Padres on the road, 7-4, with veteran utility man Mark DeRosa putting the Jays ahead for keeps with a homer leading off the 11th. The Pirates got a mammoth home run from Garrett Jones that travelled an estimated 463 feet and became just the second ball to land in the Allegheny River on the fly. That blast sent the game into extra innings. Then, ex-Jay Travis Snider singled home the winning run in walk-off style in the 11th. The Blue Jays bullpen and the Pirates pen were both outstanding. Six Blue Jays relievers gave up just two singles in nine scoreless innings in relief of Ortiz. Pittsburghs pen was equally good against the Reds, as five of their relievers combined to pitch 10 scoreless innings after picking up for Gomez. At the end of the day, the Pirates were still tied for second with Cincinnati in the NL Central, with each club sitting at 35-22 and each holding a Wild Card position. The Blue Jays, meanwhile, are still wallowing in last place in the AL East at 24-33, and they are eight games behind Baltimore for the second Wild Card slot with over a third of the season gone. The Blue Jays have out-homered Pittsburgh 72-55 and outscored them by 40 runs - 254 to 214. In fact, the Pirates offensive numbers are just this side of abysmal. They are 22nd in the Majors in runs scored, 25th in batting average, 23rd in on base percentage and 23rd in slugging percentage. The Jays bullpen has been a strength on the team this season, but the Pirates has been even better. Jason Grilli, getting his first real chance to close in his mid-30s, has an incredible 22 saves. The set-up man, Mark Melancon, who came over from Boston in the deal for the Pirates old closer, Joel Hanrahan (whos injured and out for the season), has a 0.93 earned run average. The Pirates pitchers as a whole have a glittering 3.12 ERA and have the second most strikeouts in the Majors. Yet, the Pirates rotation doesnt blow you away with big names. While the Blue Jays added the likes of R..dddddddddddd Dickey, Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle in the offseason, the Pirates went the bargain basement route and picked up Francisco Liriano, Jeanmar Gomez and Francisco Liriano and were paid dividends with the continued devotement of lefty Jeff Locke, who came over in a June 3rd, 2009 deal with Atlanta, along with Gorkys Hernandez and Charlie Morton for outfielder Nate McLouth, whos now with Baltimore. Locke is 5-1 with a 2.25 ERA. You can point to the Blue Jays starting rotation, where only Dickey and Buehrle have avoided time on the DL this season and says the club has been ravaged by injuries, for the 2nd year running. However the Pirates have problems with their rotation as well. Jonathan Sanchez, was a disaster out of the gate. He went (0-3) and was cut loose. Liriano got a late start after breaking his arm around Christmas time, while pranking his kids in a stunt that went awry. James McDonald is on the DL and rehabbing a shoulder injury and now Jeanmar Gomez has the same sort of forearm issue thats put Brandon Morrow on the disable list for the Blue Jays. There are those who suggest the Pirates are doing it with smoke and mirrors. They point to the clubs record at the mid-point of the last two seasons, 47-43 in 2011 and 48-37 in 2012, and the subsequent collapses in the second halves of both seasons as evidence it will happen again this year. The critics may be right, but the Buccos ERA at this point is about a third of a run better than it was mid-way through last season - 3.12 to 4.47 - and if anything, they should be battle-hardened by whats happened the last two seasons. The Giants, Washington and maybe even Colorado all have the talent to take a run at Pittsburgh, but there just seems to be something special about this team; a team that hasnt finished about .500 or in the postseason since 1992. The Blue Jays, sitting nine games under .500, will have to go 16-10 or 17-9 in June to have any hope of getting back into the Wild Card hunt in the American League. Ortiz is on his way to Florida to get an MRI on his elbow. If this is indeed the end of his Major League career, it ended on an unusual note. In the second inning against the Padres, he gave up a three-run homer to Padres starter Edinson Volquez. It was the first home run of Volquezs career and the first-round tripper ever given up by Ortiz to a pitcher in 3-3 career games. The Blue Jays are 5-4 in inter-league play so far, 3-1 at home and 2-3 on the road under, heading into a two-game set with the Giants starting Tuesday night at San Francisco. Josh Johnson returns from his rehab stint to make the start in the series open. Johnson is still in search of his first victory as a member of the Blue Jays. ' ' '
Jadeveon Clowney attended the opening of a new Houston Texans teen club at a Houston Boys and Girls Club this week.During the visit he joined a room of teenage girls and a couple of Texans cheerleaders to do a few yoga poses. It was clear that the hulking defensive end should probably stick to his day job as Clowney struggled with balance on most of the poses he attempted, drawing giggles from everyone in the room. The top overall pick in the 2014 draft seemed proud of his effort, even though it was clearly subpar.I do it in the offseason a little bit, so I had to go in there and show them what to do, he said. I had to show them a little bit.The exercise room is part of a facility for teenagers that was built thanks to a $750,000 donation by the Texans. Clowney was happy to participate in the opening because working with inner-city youth is an important cause to him.Its very good for the kids to have somewhere to go after school, he said. When I was growing up ... and getting out of school my mom was going to work, so it was my grandparents that were taking care of me and they couldnt keep up with me. So you know how that ended -- getting into everything.Clowney will also show his support for Houstons Boys and Girls Clubs this weekend during the NFLs My Cause My Cleats campaign. His blue cleats feature a drawing of the Houston skyline with Great futures start here on one shoe and Lend a helping hand on the other. The shoes will be auctioned off and the proceeds will benefit the Boys and Girls Club.Growing up back home we didnt have a lot of Boys and Girls Clubs and if we did we didnt know much about them, he said. So now that they have them kids can ... see everything theyve got going after school until their parents get off work. So its very important to keep them out of the streets and keep them active in something positive.---JUST FOR KICKS: The Detroit Lions and Baltimore Ravens have surged into first place in their divisions at least in part because they have perhaps the NFLs most clutch and best kickers this season.NFC North leader Detroits Matt Prater and Baltimores Justin Tucker were selected NFC and AFC special teams players of the week after their latest performances.Prater made a 40-yard field goal as time expired in regulation, breaking a tie with Minnesota in their game on Thanksgiving to give the Lions their sixth win in seven games.Tucker became the ninth player in league history to make three field goals from 50-plus yards in one game, and connected on a fourth kick, in a 19-14 win over Cincinnati to keep the Ravens in a tie with Pittsburgh atop the AFC North with their third win in four games. Tucker has made all 27 of his field goal attempts this season, extending his run to 34 in a row since last year for the sixth-longest streak in league history. He has made all 15 extra point kicks, too. With a chance to tie a game or take a lead in the fourth quarter or overtime, Prater is 25 of 25 in his career.Prater, 21 of 24 on field goals in 2016, has helped the Lions come back from fourth-quarter deficits to win seven games this season. Its been remarkable what hes been able to do, hopefully he can keep going, Detroit quarterback Matthew Stafford said. Hopefully we dont have to put him in that situation too many more times, but that unit is doing a heck of a job.---NOT ENOUGH COOKS: Saints receiver Brandin Cooks didnt hide his annoyance this week after none of Drew Brees 36 passes came his way during a 49-21 victory over Los Angeles last Sunday. This is a very emotional game and every once in a while youve got to express that, the 2014 first-round draft choice said. You have to express what you want. Closed mouths dont get fed.Earlier this week, Cooks wrote, I guess I have to turn into a businessman, in a social media post, the implication being that he was displeased about his role in the offense.Brees wound up completing 28 passes for 310 yards and four TDs, including nine passes to rookie Michael Thomas for 108 yards and two TDs.Brees said Cooks, who had 51 catches for 736 yards and six TDs through the Saints first 10 games, played a key role in New Orleans big day against the Rams. Cooks was the primary receiver on several plays, but coverage rolled toward Cooks, opening up better throws elsewhere, Brees explained.Cooks said, As a competitor, I was frustrated. ... I always want to help more than I feel like I necessarily did in that game.Cooks added that his teammates understood his agitation is not coming from a selfish standpoint, so thats the beautiful part about it. ... They know thats coming from the want to be great, the want to be remembered.---PEYTONS HONOR: Peyton Manning was honored this week by the March of Dimes as its Sportsman of the Year. The retired quarterback and five-time NFL Most Valuable Player was joined at the ceremony in New York by WNBA star Swin Cash, who was recognized as the Sportswoman of the Year by the organization.Pete Bevacqua, CEO of the PGA of America, and George Pyne, founder and CEO of Bruin Sports Capital, received awards, as well. Each year, March of Dimes honors the outstanding achievements of men and women in the sports industry. NEW ORLEANS -- Drew Brees let a shotgun snap sail through his hands for a 22-yard loss on the New Orleans Saints third play against Detroit. The rest of Sunday didnt get any better -- for Brees or the Saints.A week after throwing four touchdown passes in a 49-21 rout of the Rams, Brees went without a scoring toss for the first time in 60 home games. New Orleans (5-7) lost 28-13, remaining two games behind Atlanta in the NFC South with four to play.Brees salvaged another 300-yard passing day on a meaningless drive in the final seconds. But he also tossed a season-high three interceptions. His quarterback rating of 63.3 was by far his lowest of the year after he entered with the third-best rating in the NFL (109.1). It was his worst rating in any game since a 24-6 loss to Houston on Nov. 29, 2015.We looked sluggish, coach Sean Payton said. It looked like we came off a short week or something. The Saints failed to pick up a first down on third-and-1 the first two times they had the ball, beginning with Brees flubbed snap.I kind of took my eyes off it to look up to see what was happening and mishandled it, he said. Thats on me. You have to convert third downs to keep drives alive, and we didnt do it at the start. I dont know what it was in the second half, but I know it was pretty abysmal in the first half. That was one of many missed opportunities for the Saints. One play before the botched snap, Mark Ingram appeared to have room along the sideline for first-down yardage, but stepped out of bounds just short. On Detroits opening series, cornerback Sterliing Moore dropped a deflected pass near the sideline with no one between him and the end zone.dddddddddddd Detroit then kicked a field goal.I should have high-pointed it instead of letting it come down and slipping through my hands, Moore said. We would have had momentum from the get-go.Tight end Coby Fleener dropped a pass in the end zone with 5 seconds left in the first half, forcing the Saints to settle for a field goal to make the score 13-6.I feel like I let him (Brees) down, and Im sure other guys do as well, Fleener said. Its a tough feeling.Defensive end Cameron Jordan let a pass he batted in the air slip through his grasp for what could have been an interception when the Saints trailed 19-13 in the fourth quarter. On the next snap, the Lions Matthew Stafford connected with Golden Tate for a 66-yard touchdown. The long scoring toss was Detroits third conversion on a third down of 10 or more yards, leading to 16 points. Were probably ranked dead last in third-and-long in the league right now, New Orleans safety Kenny Vaccaro said. We give up those big plays that really stab us.The Saints, who have not been above .500 since making the playoffs in 2013, will have to win their last four games to get a winning mark this year.We dont like being up and down, Brees said. But thats the way its been the past few years, and this year as well.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFL ' ' '
Australia fast bowler John Hastings will undergo surgery on his right knee to repair a tendon he injured during a Sheffield Shield game last week.Turning out for his state side, Victoria, against Tasmania, Hastings did significant damage to the patella tendon of his right leg, while bowling in the second innings. He had to go off after sending down only 3.1 overs then, and could not bat on the final day.Cricket Australia physio Alex Kountouris said there was no estimated timeframe for Hastings recovery yet, but it would likely be a long time before he is fit to play again. Scans have revealed that John has a significant patella tendon injury and, after being reviewed by a specialist, it was decided that he will require surgery, Kountouris said. We expect that John will require a long rehabilitation period after surgery, and we will have a better understanding of his return to play timeframes in the coming weeks.Hastings, 31, was a regular part of the Australian limited-overs team in 2016 until he was dropped for the Chappell-Hadlee series against New Zealand. He had expressed shock at being omitted for those ODIs, having been the overall leading wicket-taker in the format in 2016 (29 wickets at 24.13 from 15 games) at the point when he was dropped. He had topped the list despite missing out Australias tri-series in the West Indies due to an ankle injury he picked up in IPL 2016.He had also broken a finger during the fifty-overs Matador Cup in October, but recovered fully to return to the first-class competition for Victoria.Hastings will be replaced by left-arm fast bowler Jackson Coleman in the Melbourne Stars squad for the Big Bash League (BBL). TORONTO -- Toronto FC striker Danny Koevermans has endured everything from defenders hacking at his legs to knee reconstruction surgery. Not much gets to the big Dutchman. But the 34-year-old Koevermans had a hard time keeping it together Thursday when asked about the departure of friend and teammate Terry Dunfield. The MLS team waived the hard-tackling Canadian international, whose US$120,000 salary and place in the midfield pecking order had rendered him surplus to requirements. "Hes just a great guy, a funny guy. And he was important to the team," said Koevermans, struggling to keep his emotions in check. "What can I say? Im going to miss him. "Its sad it turned out like this, but as the coach said, its business. I cant do anything about it. Unfortunately." Koevermans tradition of a pre-game coffee with Dunfield has fallen victim to the business of MLS soccer. Dunfield started the season in central midfield along with Jeremy Hall but sprained his knee April 2 in practice. He returned to find himself deep down the depth chart. Argentine Matias Laba, a young designated player acquired in late April, has since been installed alongside Hall. Toronto can redeploy Luis Silva and Jonathan Osorio in central midfield if needed. Silva has been playing behind the striker while Osorio has been shifted to the right flank. Manager Ryan Nelsen also pointed to English veteran Darel Russell, who has been used at fullback, as a possible midfield replacement. And rookie Kyle Bekker is also available. "Its one position were fairly deep-ish at now," said Nelsen. At 31, Dunfield also found himself a greybeard alongside the 21-year-old Laba and Osorio, 22-year-old Bekker and 24-year-old Hall. Dunfield said last week his knee felt fine and he was willing to do whatever was needed to help the team. If Nelsen were to play him "he knows hell get 100 per cent from me," Dunfield told reporters. His services apparently werent needed. He was slated to play a reserve match in Pittsburgh last Friday but did not see action. Dunfield is the 21st Toronto FC player out the door since the team finished the 2012 season with a league-worst 5-21-8 record. And there may be more moves for Nelsens 1-7-5 team, which is winless in 11 league games. Veteran defender Danny Califf and his $165,000 salary seem up for grabs. And Toronto is spending $200,000 on a backup keeper in the talented Stefan Frei. Nelsen says the club has identified its next transfer targets. "We have quite a few options in the works," he acknowledged. "Weve lined up the guys we want," he added. "If we can get three or four players that were trying to get in, well be very close." The next transfer window opens July 9 although the team can make trades within the league. Nelsen and assistant coach Fran OLeary were scouting in Europe recently while chief scout Pat Onstad and president Kevin Payne have been in Argentina and Uruguay. Nelsen says his team is better than its record shows. "The guys performances have been really good. We just havent got the points that we would like." A major reason for that is Toronto has dropped 11 points in seven games due to late goals. Nelsen spoke highly of Dunfield, calling his release a difficult decision. Had the player been on a $60,000 salary, he might still be here, the manager acknowledged. "But then again its a $60,000 player that probably isnt going to see much time (playing)," he said. Practices will be safer for Toronto FC players in the absence of Dunfield, who took no prisoners no matter that shirt they wore. As an attacking player, Dunfields shots often missed their mark. And when they were on target in practice, no one made more noise about it than Dunfield. But he scored six goals for Toronto, including a stoppage-time winner via a header against the Vancouver Whitecaps, his former team, in July 2012. He was a key player for TFC in 2012, starting 30 games and thriving under manager Paul Mariner after Aron Winter was fired 10 games into the season. Mariner thought enough of Dunfield to use him as captain. Acting Canadian national team coach Colin Miller also made Dunfield captain for a friendly against Denmark early this year in Arizona. The Vancouver native was originally acquired in a trade with the Whitecaps in July 2011. He made 56 appearances for Toronto in MLS, CONCACAF Champions League and Amway Canadian Championship play. One of his last acts as a Toronto FC player was to add to a colourful tattoo sleeve on his arm. Dunfield showed off the new ink, a tall ship, last week. Days later, the ship and its owner had set sail. Toronto plays Saturday at 1-10-3 D.C. United, the only team with fewer points. D.C. is winless in 12 league games. Ben Olsens team has failed to score in its last three games but is coming off a 3-1 U.S. Open Cup win over the Philadelphia Union that saw a hat trick from Canadian international Dwayne De Rosario. KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson has played with dozens of cornerbacks over 12 years in the NFL.He admits that none of them has been quite like Marcus Peters. The second-year pro has an uncanny ability to read and react, to know where a pass is going seemingly before the quarterback.Peters had two of the six interceptions of the Jets Ryan Fitzpatrick in a 24-3 win on Sunday , his second straight two-pick game and the highlight of an eight-turnover performance. Its not just Peters ability that stands out, though.Ive played with a lot of really good corners, Johnson said, but they were not as young as Marcus.Yes, the 23-year-old Peters is still a pup in the grand scheme of things. But hes been playing like a bulldog since his first game as a pro, when he picked off Houston quarterback Brian Hoyer.Peters went on to intercept eight passes last regular season, earning the rookie a spot in the Pro Bowl. He added another interception against the Texans in a 30-0 playoff romp last January, a victory that ended nearly two decades of postseason futility for Kansas City.Heck, Peters even picked off a pass in the Pro Bowl.Theyre going to have to stop throwing to his side or he is going to have 100 interceptions, Johnson said with a smile.Hes the ultimate competitor. Hes harder on himself than anybody else. Thats the best thing about him, as a young player -- he doesnt let anything slide.Peters hasnt exactly had a smooth road to stardom. He was kicked off his team at Washington after a series of run-ins with coaches, culminating with a blowup with coach Chris Petersen. The series of events was a big reason he slid midway through the first round of the draft, where Kansas City took him with the 18th overall pick. The Chiefs defended the choice from the moment they made it, insisting they had done due diligence on him.The Chiefs even sent a scout to Peters hometown of Oakland, California, in the days before the draft to make sure they knew everything about him. What they learned was that Peters had grown up. He had matured. He had become a father and wanted to take care of his family. He learned from his mistakes and was ready to move on.Peters has been a model teammate and citizen in Kansas City.Hes also used his newfound stature to help push the movement spearheaded by 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick for social equality. It was Peters who raised a gloved fist during the national anthem before the season opener, a homage to John Carlos and Tommie Smith at the 1968 Mexico City Olympics.Peters described afterward what life is like in the predominantly black neighborhoods where he grew up, and how he wants to affect change by reaching out to children in the community. But his ability to do that will be determined in part by his ability on the field, his ability to stay in the middle of the conversation. And Peters has done nothing to diminish that in three games. He rallied after a poor start against San Diego to shut down the Chargers receivers in the second half, giving Kansas City a chance to rally for the biggest comeback win in franchise history. The next week, he made Houston rue him once more with two interceptions of Brock Osweiler. On Sunday, Peters was at it again with two interceptions against the Jets.It was all about executing the game plan to a `T, Peters said. We let our pass rush get there, we played underneath, we let our safeties play over the top and we made plays.Sounds easy, right?Peters had the first of the six interceptions, and also the first of four in the fourth quarter that sealed the win. In between, things seemed to get a little contagious.Thats the beauty of it, Peters said. When things are happening like they did, you enjoy it. You embrace the opportunities that you have. You capitalize on them and have fun doing it.Peters is far from flawless. He still boils over when things are going against him. He tends to take too many chances, and gets beaten while trying to bait quarterbacks into making a bad throw. But when he is picking off passes at such a torrid clip, the Chiefs can deal with it.Listen, he has great abilities, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. All the guys know that. They respect the job hes done since hes been here. Hes a good football player, a heady football player.Does he take chances sometimes? Yeah, he does, Reid said. But hes got a short memory, which youve got to have there. He gets right back on it and nothing gets him down.---Online: AP NFL website: www.pro32.ap.org and www.twitter.com/AP-NFLDwight Howard Jersey . But what about the officials? Roberto Martinez accepts the frustration of Everton fans and admits his side have not won enough home games this season. Leighton Baines second-half goal secured a 2-1 win over Bournemouth at Goodison Park, his teams first on their own ground in the Premier League since February and only their fifth of the entire league campaign. There were protests before, during and after the game, with a plane flying over the ground trailing a banner which read time to go, Roberto. Supporters flew a banner from a plane protesting against manager Martinez Martinez was aware of the supporters discontent but vowed to continue with his drive to put things right despite ongoing uncertainty over his future at the club. Martinez speaking nonsense Sunday Supplement: Roberto Martinez overly positive on Evertons disastrous season We are all hurting together and we are all very much aware that our players are giving everything theyve got to win games for our football club, he told Sky Sports News HQ.I understand their frustration and I share their frustration and that pain and we do that with the players. Tom Cleverley (second right) of Everton celebrates scoring his teams first goal Weve been through very painful experiences but that will not stop us in our determination and our drive to put things right and make sure we are all pushing in the same direction.Asked if he had seen the plane, Martinez said: No. I would never lose the concentration of what was happening on the pitch. At that point it was an important moment of the game and its all about winning games. The reality is we havent won enough games at home and thats not what we expect. Everton have won just five Premier League games at home this season Thats why it was so important to get this win.Martinez also confirmed he remains focused on his job despite increased speculation about his future after the clubs board meeting on Friday.I am the manager of the football club and I am the one that takes the responsibility. We are in the results business, he said. Football is a game full of passion and emotions and I understand what comes when you have not won enough games. ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Jabrill Peppers may be on the field for up to 100 plays a game this season for Michigan. On defense, Peppers will move closer to the line at times as a linebacker and hell be a defensive back on some snaps. He will play in the slot, in the backfield and might even take some snaps on offense. And when the Wolverines need a boost on special teams, they will lean on Peppers to return punts and kickoffs.Peppers is game for all of it.Whatever we got to do to win, he said Sunday, a day before the teams first practice. If someone asks what position Peppers plays, what would he say?I just say, `Im an athlete, he said.Coach Jim Harbaugh said Peppers wont be the only three-way player on the team, expecting cornerback Jourdan Lewis to spend some time on offense along with his usual duties on special teams.I dont know why they havent been letting Jourdan play both plays, Peppers said. Jourdan is one of the craziest athletes Ive ever seen. ... I hope they give him a shot. With Peppers, the Wolverines will attempt to find the right balance between taking advantage of his versatile talent and not wearing him out.Somewhere in there, theres a sweet spot, Harbaugh said. In terms of load, 95, 100 (plays) is probably the max were looking for.On some snaps, Peppers will be on the field simply as a decoy to distract defenses.Thats the best part of everything, he said. Thats where I can work on my acting.Peppers said he was on the field for 96 plays last season at Minnesota. Against Ohio State, he had a career-high seven carries, caught two passes and threw one, along with making five tackles. He didnt play in Michigans win over Florida in the Citrus Bowl because of an injury to his right hand. How did he hurt his hand?Thats going to be forever undisclosed, Peppers said with a chuckle. Im good now, though.Peppers said he has added eight pouunds -- and the extra weight appears to be all muscle -- and is probably faster than he was last year.ddddddddddddWhats his fastest 40-yard dash?4.31, he said.Offensive coordinator Tim Drevno, who was a San Francisco 49ers assistant coach for Harbaugh, has been around a lot of great athletes and said Peppers ranks among the best of them.Hes one of the most explosive, dynamic players Ive ever been around, Drevno said. Hes in a league with the Frank Gores, Michael Crabtrees and Vernon Davises.Drevno wishes he could have Peppers on the field for every snap, but he knows his day job, so to speak, is on defense. On the roster, Peppers is listed as a linebacker and defensive back. Defensive coordinator Don Brown said it isnt fair to say his position is linebacker or a hybrid. Were going to give this guy a lot to do, Brown said.Based on Peppers upbringing in New Jersey, hes thankful to be where he is, playing football for a storied program and attending a famed university. Peppers father went to prison when Jabrill was 7 and didnt get out until his was 14, he wrote last year in The Players Tribune, and his older brother, Don, was shot and killed at the age of 14.People where Im from, they dont have this opportunity, he said, surrounded by a pack of reporters and cameras at Michigans media day. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Written in Portuguese on one wall above center court at Carioca Arena is the phrase Um mundo novo. Translation: A new world. It didnt seem that way in mens Olympic basketball -- until now.Threatened by Australia in its previous game, the U.S. mens team survived a heart-racing final seconds to defeat disciplined and experienced Serbia 94-91 on Friday night and extend its winning streak in international tournaments to 49 games.No. 50 is no given, and suddenly, a gold medal that seemed a formality just a few days ago is anything but certain. The Americans, boasting a roster stuffed with NBA All-Stars, elite outside shooters but only two former Olympians, look very vulnerable and somewhat lost on the worlds hardwood stage. We do have more talent, said U.S. coach Mike Krzyzewski, who has been warning about overconfidence since his teams arrival in Brazil. We have to get our talent playing even much better as a team.Despite a ferocious start, the Americans couldnt put away the underdog Serbs, who ran their cut-and-cut-again offense with precision and had a chance to tie it in the final seconds. But guard Bogdan Bogdanovics 3-pointer from the left wing was a little long and Kevin Durant secured the rebound and the relieved Americans walked off the floor with their streak intact but their standing shaken.Kyrie Irving scored 15 points and Durant and Carmelo Anthony added 12 apiece for the U.S. team, which arrived in South American lauded as the latest version of an American super squad. However, after their 10-point win over the Aussies earlier this week and now a nail-biter against the Serbs, the rest of the field might be starting to believe the U.S. can be taken. We got in our own heads, Durant said. We had a great start, great start. We were up almost 20 points. We should have held the lead and we just got sidetracked by stupid stuff, from the calls to the physicality, the extra plays. We got to stay with it. Thats the way its going to be out here.Nikola Jokic, who plays for the Denver Nuggets, scored 25 and Milos Teodosic and Miroslav Raduljica 18 each for the Serbs, who fell to 1/3 but left the building feeling confident after making the Americans sweat.Paul George said Serbias systematic offense was unlike anything he and his teammates have faced.Once again, we relied on natural talent, George said. This is why these guys are special in our league. These international guys really know how to move and really know how to cut. Its more about how theyre running their offense. Its wearing us down. Its like they dont get tired. It was the first Olympic game between the nations, and a rematch of the 2014 Basketball World Cup championship won by the U.S. 129-92. However, this never resembled that track meet as the Serbs slowed the tempo and forced the Americans into turnovers and rushed possessions. The worlds best team certainly didnt look or play like it for long stretches. The U.S., which will wrap up preliminary-round play against France on Sunday, led 94-87 with 2:11 left on a basket by Anthony. But the Serbs got a basket by Jokic and two free throws Teodosic to get within three.Durant, who only attempted four shots, misfired with eight seconds left giving Serbia one last chance. After a timeout, the ball wound up with Bogdanovic, who had a great look from 22 feet but was just off the mark.We are that kind of a team that we never give up and we showed this today, said Teodosic, one of Europes craftiest guards for the past decade. This is third game in a row that we have a very bad beginning, and especially (against) the teams like the United States, its very tough to get back in the game when you are losing by 10 or 15 in the beginning. The 10-point win over Australia -- just the fifth time the U.S. has won by 10 or fewer since 2006 -- raised the possibility that this American team might not be as golden as previous ones.Krzyzewski, though, insists there is more global balance in hoops. We dont give enough credit to the talent level on the other team, he said. Australia is talented. Serbia is talented. They are one of the top teams in the world, but theyve played together for a long time. We played them two years ago and had a great game and everything went well for us. All of those guys are back and Im sure they wanted to make up for that, too.Our guys are playing as a team, and I think we just havent had that experience of playing that long together and hopefully these games will help us and the game against France will also. The Americans had better learn or theyll be going home with a less shiny medal. RIO DE JANEIRO -- You love them now, right America?Mike Krzyzewski and Geno Auriemma may have their haters in college basketball, but this is the Olympics. This is when patriotic pride trumps school spirit, when there is no Tar Heel blue, only red, white and blue.So all those fans chanting USA! USA! should be shouting Go Coach K!Well, I hope theyre saying that. Im not sure all of them are completely saying that, Krzyzewski said with a laugh. But I would hope that most people are.College basketball, built on regional rivalries and March Madness, makes it impossible for anyone to be universally beloved, especially when theyve won as much as Krzyzewski has with the Duke men or Auriemma with the Connecticut women. So Auriemma also laughs when pondering fans on both sides of Tobacco Road in North Carolina, or way up on Rocky Top in Tennessee, suddenly being on board with the U.S. coaches.Well, some people are pro-USA but not necessarily pro-Coach K and Geno, Auriemma said. So Im sure theres a faction out there of anti-Duke, anti-UConn people who, `We love the USA so much that we want them to win in spite of those two guys.Theres little need to consider that in most of the Olympics, individual sports with emotional tales of underdogs overcoming the odds to win gold for their country. Thats what makes womens gymnastics so popular. But these guys arent underdogs, theyre definitely not Americas Sweethearts, and they dont come around every four years. For some fans, theyre the Evil Empire, in their faces every November to March. You have to put that aside right now, U.S. forward and former Tar Heels star Harrison Barnes said, although UNC did have a better season this year.Krzyzewski has won five NCAA championships and more than 1,000 games, most in Division I history. The Blue Devils are college basketballs version of the New York Yankees or Dallas Cowboys, the team that fans either love or love to hate -- and the haters believe the TV announcers and referees love them too much.Auriemma has won a record 11 national championships, a man in a womens world who doesnt apologize for the way he wins or talks. His comments sometimes overshadow his games, even back when the Huskies played Pat Summitts Tennessee teams. Now wearing their countrys colors and undefeated heading into the quarterfinals -- Auriemmas team is dominating at a record-setting pace and plays Japan on Tuesday; Krzyzewskis squad has beenn challenged and faces Argentina on Wednesday -- the guy from Chicago (Krzyzewski) and Philadelphia (Auriemma) should now be popular around the nation.ddddddddddddI dont think they really think about those things, U.S. mens assistant Jim Boeheim said. I know Geno doesnt. He thrives on the fact that they root against him.Boeheim, friends with both, said the difference is that Krzyzewski is more careful than Auriemma in choosing his words, not wanting to offend anyone.Mike cares, Boeheim said. Geno doesnt care.Auriemmas response?First of all, Im surprised that Boeheim is even aware of anything anybody says, because he lives in his own world up there in Syracuse, Auriemma quipped. So thats the biggest shocker so far of the Olympics, the fact that he actually pays attention to anything.Mikes been at it a lot longer at a higher level than I have. And hes a West Point guy, and very smart, really bright, and knows how to think before he speaks. So why is that surprising, that I stick my foot in my mouth sometimes? He said hes tried to choose his words more carefully since beginning what he calls the unbelievable experience of becoming U.S. womens coach in 2009, realizing that on some issues hes speaking not just for UConn, but for the country. Auriemma said the writers who cover the Huskies like him less now because he wont say some of the things he used to.Krzyzewski is nearing the end of his 10-year run as U.S. coach, but the former Army captain has been involved with U.S. teams since 1979. He said people who dont necessarily root for him have shown they appreciate him. They say, `Coach, thanks for coaching USA, thanks for taking the time to coach USA, he said. And I tell them, `Look, its an honor. Thanks for watching and cheering for us.And cheering for him.Whether you like Duke or not, you cant underestimate what Coach Ks done. Whether you like UConn or not, you have to respect what Coach Auriemmas done, womens and former UConn star Diana Taurasi said. And I think the more that theyre seen in this setting, you know what, its not (they win) because theyre at Duke, its not because theyre at UConn. Its because theyre great coaches.---AP Basketball Writer Doug Feinberg contributed to this report.---Follow Brian Mahoney on Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/Briancmahoney ' ' '
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Clemsons athletic department reported 15 violations to the NCAA in the past year, including three by the defending Atlantic Coast Conference football champions. The school released its infractions report Tuesday after an open records request by The Associated Press.None of the violations is considered serious. All but one of them is classified as a Level III infraction. Level III infractions are those the NCAA considers isolated or limited in nature; provide no more than a minimal recruiting, competitive or other advantage; and dont include more than a minimal impermissible benefit.Clemson detailed its NCAA violations from Aug. 1, 2015, through this past July 31.Three of the violations involved the football program, which starts the season ranked No. 2.One came from an accidental FaceTime call placed by coach Dabo Swinney to a prospect before the allowable date of Sept. 1. Coaches cant place any phone calls to the prospect from Sept. 1-15 as punishment for the infraction.Another violation in football came last October and involved two players who dropped engineering courses and were not enrolled full-time, as required by the NCAA. Clemson declared both players ineligible, conducted rules education with all athletes and paid a $500 fine. The NCAA restored the two athletes eligibility. The final football infraction came this past January when the staff gave excess travel reimbursement to several prospects after their official visits. The school said the staff wrongly thought it could round up the travel reimbursement amount to the nearest dollar. The staffer involved received a letter of admonishment, although the school said it did not try to collect the overpay from prospects because of the minimal amount of the over-award.The first-year baseball program of coach Monte Lee had three violations.Lee, who led the Tigers to the ACC Tournament title last May, was admonished for an infraction from last September when he responded to a text from a 2018 prospect before Sept. 1 of the players junior year of high school. Lee, the school said, thought the prospect was set to graduate in 2017. When informed otherwise by the player, Lee stopped all communication with the prospect and reported it to the compliance office.Lee and his staff must also refrain from communicating with the player for two weeks starting Sept. 1.Last August, an assistant coach on Clemsons mens golf team impermissibly brought in an outside consultant to work with two players on the course and teach a three-session with the whole team. The mens golf team was made to take three days off from all countable athletic activity for three weeks. Yeezy Cheap Real . The visitors had 13 shots to Leicesters 10 in an improved performance under new boss Benitez, and had a penalty claim turned down when Sissokos shot struck Wes Morgans arm, but the defeat leaves them second bottom with Sunderland to come in the Tyne-Wear derby next Sunday, live on Sky Sports. Leicesters Wes Morgan and Danny Drinkwater say they had to dig in to beat Newcastle As for Leicester, who scored with their only shot on target at the King Power Stadium, the win means they will definitely stay top through to April with a visit to Crystal Palace up next.Benitez made two changes for his first game in charge as Aleksandar Mitrovic and Vurnon Anita replaced Paul Dummett and Emmanuel Riviere, and the visitors started the stronger. Rafael Benitez suffered defeat in his first match in charge of Newcastle They went close through Perez after just four minutes as the Spaniard flashed his shot just wide, before his teasing cross almost found Sissoko at the back post. But Leicester edged in front when Okazaki found the bottom corner with a stunning piece of improvisation for his fifth league goal of the season. Leicester manager Claudio Ranieri praised his sides spirit Steven Taylor could only help on Marc Albrightons cross to the back post, and when Vardy headed back across goal, Okazaki was on hand to fire an overhead kick past Elliot. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher told Sky Sports after the game Vardy was correctly ruled onside because Taylors header was unchallenged, deeming it a football action, and leaving the Leicester man free in phase two to legitimately play the ball.Albrighton had the chance to double the hosts lead immediately, but the winger flashed his shot wide of the far post. Okazaki celebrates the only goal of the game at the King Power Stadium Newcastle responded well to going behind and quickly settled back into their rhythm, but Sissoko and Mitrovic collided as the latter looked to pull the trigger in the box. And, with a sell-out King Power in full voice, Benitezs side struggled to carve out another opportunity before the break. Vardy battles Anita in the first half The Newcastle boss responded with his first change 10 minutes after half-time, and Andros Townsends introduction made a difference.Sissoko wasted their clearest opportunity to level when he failed to pick out a team-mate after breaking past the Leicester defence on the hour mark, but Newcastle midfielder then set up Perez, whose low drive deflected narrowly wide of Kasper Schmeichels near post. Newcastle manager Rafael Benitez focused on the positives following his first game in charge Mitrovic and Danny Simpson clashed as the visitors frustration threatened to boil over, but referee Craig Pawson did well to defuse the situation. The Magpies continued to grow into the game as the final 10 minutes approached, and they had a penalty appeal ignored when Sissokos powerful shot came back off Morgan with eight minutes to play. Monday Night Football guest Ronald Koeman believes Manchester City and Arsenal are now out of the Premier League title race Their final chance to salvage a point fell to substitute De Jong, but the Dutchman could only skew his shot tamely to Schmeichel as Leicester saw out the final stages to secure their second consecutive 1-0 win.The victory puts them five points ahead of Tottenham with eight games remaining, while Newcastle have now lost their last seven league matches on the road.Team line-upsLeicester: Schmeichel (6), Simpson (6), Huth (7), Morgan (7), Fuchs (6), Mahrez (6), Kante (8), Drinkwater (8), Albrighton (6), Okazaki (7), Vardy (6).Used subs: Schlupp (6), Ulloa (6)Newcastle: Elliot (6), Colback (7), Lascelles (6), Taylor (6), Janmaat (6), Sissoko (6), Anita (6), Shelvey (6), Perez (6), Wijnaldum (6), Mitrovic (6)Used subs: Townsend (6), De Jong (5), Doumbia (6)Man of the Match: Danny Drinkwater Fjallraven Kanken Authentic . -- Jimmie Johnson held off a teammate, passed a pair of Hall of Famers, and dominated once more at Dover. Thats about all he can do right now, so hes trying not to think about when he might be able to play again for the Los Angeles Lakers. Brock Lesnar could absorb the beatings he suffered inside the cage.Lesnar was built to fight -- to conquer all -- on a mat, in a ring or inside metal, and no man could cross over genres and collect championships with his ease. His rapid ascension from faux fighter for WWE to heavyweight champion under the UFC banner made the superhuman freak the pay-per-view box office king, one of the baddest men in sports and put him on a seemingly lengthy career path toward MMA immortality. But the determination and domination that allowed him to knock out Frank Mir and Randy Couture and choke out Shane Carwin couldnt help Lesnar defeat diverticulitis. The lower-intestinal ailment nearly killed him, and it forced him to retreat back to WWE in 2012.It haunted me for a long time, Lesnar.Turns out, Lesnar wasnt finished with UFC.Fire up the Brocktagon one more time. One year after he closed the door forever on a UFC return, Lesnar is set for the surprise comeback of the year, fighting Saturday for the first time in 4 1/2 years, against heavyweight Mark Hunt in the co-main event of UFC 200 in Las Vegas.I truly, 100 percent thought he was done and wed seen the last of him in professional fighting, UFC President Dana White told The Associated Press. The WWE, that deal was the right move. It was the right money. At that point in his life, I thought it was perfect. What he accomplished here was incredible but it was probably time to move on.Going out on an Alistair Overeem kick to the liver would have been one thing. But Lesnar, who turns 39 three days after UFC 200, could not accept that 12 inches of surgically removed colon would be his final parting blow in UFC.Lesnar won the NCAA heavyweight championship at Minnesota and wrestled WWE greats Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker and The Rock in PPV main events in his early 20s. Hes always been a competitor, and that edge had him calling White late this spring asking for another fight. Before its too late, I want to get back in the cage and have some fun with it, Lesnar said. This is all about having fun. Im not looking past this fight.Lesnar was a man resigned to MMA retirement last March when he went on ESPN and announced he had signed a contract extension with WWE. He told the AP he turnned down a UFC offer worth 10 times what he was making earlier in his MMA career.ddddddddddddm a 37-year-old man, and some days I feel like Im 80, just with all the things Ive experienced, all the things Ive done. I feel fortunate about it. Its like, what else can I do? Why go backward? he said last year.Lesnar needed approval from WWE Chairman Vince McMahon to return to UFC. After a few phone calls of negotiations with White, a deal was struck that allowed Lesnar back in the octagon.WWE refused to make any officials available to the AP for comment. WWE chief brand officer Stephanie McMahon told Business Insider last month the company is, not supporting the fight, necessarily but agreed to let Lesnar fight for UFC because he was a special attraction. We recognize the value of our performers participating in entertainment and sporting events outside of WWE, the company said in a statement.Win or lose Saturday, Lesnar is scheduled to have his next WWE match Aug. 21 at SummerSlam in New York, likely against Randy Orton. For UFC 200, Lesnar told White to put him in the cage against any fighter. Lesnar said there was early talk his return would wait for the inaugural UFC New York card in November, but White had a vacant spot on this weekends card when it pushed the McGregor-Nate Diaz bout to UFC 202.Lesnar (5-3) fights the 42-year-old knockout artist Hunt (12-10-1) on a card headlined by Daniel Cormier vs. Jon Jones. Hunt has nine fights since Lesnars last bout in December 2011 and knocked out Mir in March at UFC Fight Night in Australia. Is he better than I am at standup? Of course he is, Lesnar said. Is he a better wrestler than me? Hell no.Happy with his family in Saskatchewan and healthy for the first time in years, Lesnar is enjoying his training camp like never before. White said he has never seen Lesnar so excited and almost giddy as he has been the past month, and so even though Saturdays bout is absolutely a one-fight deal, theres no guarantee that its the last UFC sees of Lesnar.Nothing is ever final, White said. This is a one-and-done, but who knows? He could come back again. ' ' '
LONG EATON - Jess Neilson of North Vancouver, B.C., kicked for 12 points to help power Canada past South Africa 37-0 on Wednesday to advance to Sundays final against the United States at the Nations Cup under-20 womens rugby tournament. Canada led 13-0 at halftime after Neilson connected for a pair of penalty goals and converted a try by Paige Farries of Red Deer, Alta. She added two more conversions in the second half, when Canada blew the game open with tries from Lori Josephson of Beaverton, Ont., Fedelia Omaghan of Toronto, Frederique Rajotte of Markham, Ont., and Sarah Gordon of Surrey, B.C. "We didnt have the start we wanted but I knew going in that the challenge was going to be there for us," said coach Sandro Fiorino. The Columbus Blue Jackets are making a habit of winning big. Something has to give when the teams meet Tuesday night at Rogers Place. The Oilers previous six games have each been decided by a goal. Four of them have ended in either overtime or a shootout. The Blue Jackets arrive in Albertas capital on a six-game winning streak, outscoring their opponents by a combined 25-9 during that stretch.Former Oiler Sam Gagner has 18 points in the Blue Jackets last 20 games.Columbus has a winning percentage of .731 under coach John Tortorella. The Blue Jackets beat the New York Islanders in Columbus on Saturday, but unlike most teams heading west, the team elected to stay in Ohio and practiced there on Monday before traveling northwest to Alberta.Usually, if the schedule allows, a team will skate in Edmonton the day before the game. Tortorella also has done away with the morning skate, and the Blue Jackets are proving that practice just might not make perfect. But Tortorella said his team has a far different attitude than last season.Weve talked about this last year; its hoping versus almost a mindset of knowing, he said. I think when you have some success, and weve had some success early in the season here, you do get that belief. The question is going to be when theres a couple of struggles and maybe something happens with a lead in the third period, it goes the other way, which is going to happen in a 82-game schedule -- how do you react, there? And the Blue Jackets are doing it without leaning on any one line.Yeah, were a team that rolls four lines, said right winger Cam Atkinson, who has six points in his last three games.dddddddddddd Thats how we have success. Everyone is involved, thats what weve been doing, and its been great. On Monday, Oilers general manager Peter Chiarelli announced that defenseman Darnell Nurse had undergone successful surgery to repair ligament and bone damage in a foot. Coach Todd McLellan said defenseman Brandon Davidson, who has been on injured reserve for all but one game this season, could be activated in time for Tuesdays game.I think the next game is a good possibility, said Davidson, who played 51 games for the Oilers last season. Im just kind of waiting on the last call, but I think things went well on the ice today in practice and over the last little while. I feel I will be available for tomorrow. To make room, the team sent down defenseman David Musil, son of former Oiler Frantisek Musil, to their AHL affiliate in Bakersfield, Calif.McLellan said Davidson will need time to readjust to the pace of the NHL game.I feel that the call-up players have a better chance of success than the injured players, McLellan said. Theyve been playing and theyre somewhat up to pace, where Davie will go into the lineup and I think hes played six or seven minutes all season. It will be an adjustment for him, the game is moving pretty fast for him, at least for how he remembers it. ' ' '

The British Board of Boxing Control (BBBofC) confirmed that Tyson Furys boxing licence has been suspended pending further investigation into anti-doping and medical issues.Fury vacated his WBO and WBA world heavyweight titles on Wednesday after testing positive for cocaine and admitting he is suffering from mental health issues. The British boxer also faces a UK Anti-Doping hearing next month after traces of nandrolone were allegedly found in a urine sample last year.BBBofC general secretary Robert Smith said Furys claim that he is suffering from depression will be considered when assessing any doping offences. We have to wait to see what the investigation turns up and at the moment he doesnt have a licence so cant box, Smith told ESPN on Thursday. Hes being dealt with by UKAD so we will have to see what happens there and with regard to medical documentation, we have had medical documents from him.We are in no hurry. His statements [on mental health] have already been considered because his licence has already been suspended. At some point we may have to have a hearing with Tyson. There are a few other things going on with regard to this matter as well.Hennessy Sports, Furys promoter, said in a statement that the boxer is receiving expert medical attention.Fury twice pulled out of a rematch with Wladimir Klitschko, who he upset on points to win the IBF, WBO and WBA belts in November.Ukrainian Klitschko, who had reigned for over nine years, is now on the brink of signing a deal to fight Furys fellow Briton Anthony Joshua, the IBF champion, in Manchester or Cardiff on Dec. 10.Whilst its heartbreaking to see Tyson vacate the world titles that he worked so long and hard for all his life, whats paramount now is that he receives the medical treatment along with the love of his family and friends and the support of the boxing world to make a full recovery, said Furys promoter Mick Hennessy in a statement. The last time Michigan went to Iowa City as the No. 2-ranked team, in 1985, Jim Harbaugh was the quarterback and the then-No. 1 Hawkeyes dashed the Wolverines national championship hopes with a 12-10 win. Harbaugh, now the Michigan coach, wont be facing an Iowa team of 85 vintage on Saturday. The Hawkeyes have lost three home games and were all but eliminated from the West Division race with last weeks 41-14 loss at Penn State. But the Wolverines have lost three straight in Iowa City since last winning there in 2005, and this will be only the second game theyve traveled outside the Great Lakes State.BEST MATCHUPMinnesota at No. 21 Nebraska. The Gophers can still make the Big Ten championship game, but only if they win their next three games. All are difficult. First up is a trip to Lincoln, where they won in 2014 after erasing a 10-point deficit in the third quarter. Theyll be going against a Nebraska team still smarting from a 62-3 beat-down at Ohio State and with the status of quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. in doubt. Armstrong was going through a concussion protocol this week after getting knocked unconscious against the Buckeyes. If he cant play, Ryker Fyfe will make his second career start.INSIDE THE NUMBERSWisconsin, which hosts Illinois, has won 10 of 11 against the Illini. That includes six straight, matching the longest streak by either team in series history. ... Illinois three quarterbacks havee combined to throw three interceptions, ranking fourth in the FBS and tied for first in the Big Ten.dddddddddddd ... Nebraska has won 18 straight prime-time games in Lincoln since 2008. ... Rutgers has 16 sacks in nine games to top last years total of 12. ... With 30 career TD passes, David Blough has passed Purdue greats Len Dawson (29) and Bob Griese (28).LONG SHOTIndiana is a 6 +-point underdog at home to No. 12 Penn State. The Hoosiers, who need one more win for bowl eligibility, face one of the hottest teams in the nation. The Nittany Lions have won five straight and remain alive in the East Division race, a game behind Michigan. Theyve averaged 555 yards and outscored their last two opponents (Purdue, Iowa) by a combined 103-38. The Hoosiers have recorded 10 sacks and 28 tackles for loss in their last three games. The defense faces a much more difficult task in trying to corral Big Ten rushing leader Saquon Barkley.PLAYER TO WATCHMichigan QB Wilton Speight is coming off the best game of his career, having completed nearly 80 percent of his passes and throwing for 362 yards against Maryland, including a school-record 292 in the first half. Iowa has given up 29 pass plays of 20 yards or longer, the third-worst mark in the conference. If Speight gets on a roll, the Wolverines will be hard to stop.---More AP college football at http://collegefootball.ap.org ' ' '
NEW YORK -- Something in the rain must have stirred those Toronto hitters.Or maybe it was just Michael Pinedas early exit.Russell Martin homered twice, including a go-ahead shot in an eight-run eighth inning, and Troy Tulowitzki had a season-high four hits as the Blue Jays erased a six-run deficit following a 42-minute rain delay Tuesday night in their 12-6 victory over the New York Yankees. The rain helped us, I know that, manager John Gibbons said. Got old Pineda out of there. ... We just came to life.Edwin Encarnacion hit a tying homer and reached 100 RBI with three in the eighth as Toronto took advantage of a major meltdown by New Yorks bullpen. Tulowitzki also went deep to help the Blue Jays complete their biggest comeback since June 2015. They climbed back atop the AL East, just ahead of Baltimore and Boston. It just felt like the momentum was shifting in our direction, Martin said. But we definitely got a little bit lucky, got Pineda out of the game. It looked like he had his A-game today. So, youve just got to point to the sky and kind of thank whoevers up there helping out like that.Impressive rookie Gary Sanchez homered twice for New York, including a titanic, three-run drive deep into the rarely reached second deck in left field at Yankee Stadium. It was the fourth time both starting catchers had multiple home runs in a major league game -- first in the American League.Didi Gregorius also homered for the Yankees, who squandered a chance to move within 4 1/2 games of first place. They lost for the second time in seven games and failed again to move five over .500 for the first time this season.Scott Feldman (6-4) replaced ineffective Toronto starter Marco Estrada after the stoppage and struck out five in three innings of one-run relief. It was Feldmans first win with the Blue Jays since they acquired him from Houston at the Aug. 1 trade deadline.Held scoreless over the first 14 innings of the series, Torontos big bats finally busted loose after a downpour in the middle of the fifth ended Pinedas strong start.I would have loved to send him (back) out there, but what he went through with his shoulder, I just felt he couldnt do it, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. We just felt its risky for him. And thats just not a risk we want to take. Hes important to us.Toronto pounced on reliever Anthony Swarzak in the sixth.Devon Travis doubled and scored on a throwing error by third baseman Chase Headley. Two strikeouts later, Tulowitzki popped a two-run homer just beyond the short porch in right field, and Martin followed with a home run to center. It was the second time in three days that Tulowitzki and Martin went back-to-back.Now that the Yankees dont have (Andrew) Miller and (Dellin) Betances in the seventh and eighth inning, it makes for a different ballgame, Martin said. With the Blue Jays trailing 6-4, reigning AL MVP Josh Donaldson worked a 12-pitch walk against Adam Warren (1-1) leading off the eighth.Encarnacion, who leads the majors in RBI, followed with a no-doubt drive deep into the lower deck in left field to tie it at 6. He dropped his bat on home plate and styled his way around the bases after his 34th homer tied Baltimore slugger Mark Trumbo for tops in the majors. He kept fouling off good pitches, Warren said about his tussle with Donaldson. You want to get the first guy out, and when it goes that deep, hot night, and youre working hard, it wears you down a little bit. And obviously, a little demoralizing when you walk him.Tulowitzki singled in front of Martins 12th homer, a high fly to right that put Toronto ahead. It marked the 12th career multihomer game for the ex-Yankees catcher, the last three with the Blue Jays at Yankee Stadium.I wish you guys wouldnt have told me that. Now Im going to be thinking about it, said Martin, who has homered in three straight games for the second time in his career. I do like playing in New York; its a good city. I like the atmosphere. Theres always good energy. That might be a reason. But, I dont know, maybe Im holding a little something against the Yankees.Chasen Shreve entered and failed to retire any of his five batters. Travis hit an RBI single, and Donaldson drove in a run with his second walk of the inning. Michael Saunders had an RBI double, and Encarnacions groundout gave him three RBI in a half-inning that lasted 37 minutes. The eight runs matched Torontos largest inning of the season. The offense exploded, Estrada said.FALLING APARTWarren had not allowed a run in nine appearances covering 11 innings since the Yankees reacquired him from the Chicago Cubs in the trade for Aroldis Chapman. It was the largest lead New York has blown since squandering a 7-0 cushion after seven innings at Tampa Bay on Sept. 28, 2011, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.TRAINERS ROOMBlue Jays: OF Ezequiel Carrera (strained left Achilles tendon) was activated from the 15-day disabled list and started in right field. BOULDER, Colo. -- Police shot and killed a machete-wielding man Wednesday who refused to drop the weapon after threatening someone at the University of Colorado in Boulder, authorities said. The unidentified man brandished the machete during an altercation in the parking lot of a sports complex and then went inside a building, campus police spokesman Scott Pribble said. Two officers, one from the university and one from the city, fired shots after confronting the man in a stairwell and ordering him to drop the weapon. He refused and it was at that time for public safety that shots were fired, Pribble said.An investigation was underway to determine more details.Melissa Zak, chief of university police, said she believes the officers faced a life-threatening situation, and it would be unfair to second guess their decision to open fire. She declined to say if the suspect was a student, had a criminal history or mental health problems.Hours after the shooting, police responded to a report of an active shooter at the student union and concluded it was false. The sports complex and University Memorial Center, home of the campus bookstore and cafeteria, were closed as police investigated both events. In both instances, the university sent text alerts to students, faculty and staffers telling them to take protective action, but classes continued.Since those groups are spread across campus or may not even be there, authorities said they leave it to people to decide for themselves how to best respond to possible threats. When the 2016 tennis season unfurled Down Under, Serena Williams and Novak Djokovic were the unchallenged champions of their elite orbits.By the end of the year, the No. 1 players had been unseated in shocking fashion by two exceptionally late bloomers, Angelique Kerber and Andy Murray.Williams was the WTAs top-ranked player for 186 consecutive weeks, equaling Steffi Grafs Open era record. Djokovic occupied the ATP World Tour throne for 122 consecutive weeks. Collectively, thats nearly six straight years of dominance. The year-end obituaries of the fallen No. 2-ranked players, however, sounded a bit shrill. As 2017 rapidly approaches, we can report that Williams -- now a doddering 35 -- and the 29-year-old Djokovic are still breathing. In fact, it wouldnt be a stretch to imagine them winning multiple Slams and reclaiming their No. 1 rankings.Amid all the hype and talk of change, its easy to forget that Djokovic won the first two majors of the season and made the final of the fourth; Williams lost to Kerber in the final of the Australian Open and beat her in the Wimbledon final. In retrospect, its now clear Serena spoiled us with a late-career surge that has no historic parallel. After turning 30, following the 2011 US Open, she won nine of the next 20 Grand Slam singles titles -- dominating womens tennis over a five-year span in spectacular fashion. She and Djokovic still have their supporters. Its Jan. 30, the Monday after the Australian Open ends, said Brad Gilbert, who coached Andy Murray, Andre Agassi and Andy Roddick. And you tell me that [Serena/Djokovic] double happened. No, I wouldnt be surprised -- at all.Djoker has won six of those titles. Serenas like a stock -- how do you predict it? The fact shes played as little as she has -- shes 35, and shes probably the betting favorite. Sort of like Tom Brady and the Patriots. Dont focus on the age; look at the history. Both Djokovic and Williams struggled with injuries, which led to diminished confidence -- their signature weapon in recent years.Heading into this years US Open, Williams was still a favorite, and with a title, would have strung together another excellent year. Instead she got beaten by ascendant Karolina Pliskova in the semifinals.I wasnt able to move the way I wanted to move, Williams told the media afterward. When youre injured, youre thinking of other things when you should be just playing and thinking of your shots. My mind was just a little bit everywhere. So was her season. There were surprisingly early losses in the Rio Olympics in singles and, with sister Venus, doubles. Serena finished with two titles (Wimbledon and Rome) and played only 44 matches, her lowest totals in five years.dddddddddddd And, for the second consecutive year, she shut her season down after the US Open. Her coach, Patrick Mouratoglou, was moved to call it a very bad season.Williams, who was dogged by shoulder and knee issues, literally limped away from the year.Djokovic nursed a nagging arm injury and, after winning the French Open to complete his career Grand Slam, tailed off drastically. After losing to Murray in the final of the ATP year-end event, Djokovic looked and sounded weary.Right now, he said to the media, the goal is just to rest a little bit. Its been a long season, a very nice year, a lot to reflect on, a lot to take in. Its time to leave the racket aside for a little bit, just recover. There will be no recovery for six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker, the coach who was the most notable collateral damage after Djokovics second-half swoon. After three years with Djokovic, Becker was terminated at the end of the season.Because theyre getting a bit older, both Djokovic and Williams will be playing in 2017 with an enormous sense of urgency. Its suddenly a shrinking universe, with all kinds of younger players -- Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, Nick Kyrgios, Simona Halep, Pliskova and Madison Keys -- all looking for their first Slam win.Nearing 30, Djokovic has crossed that line of demarcation for male tennis players. Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Rafael Nadal, who have won a total of 45 majors, collected only two among them after their 29th birthdays.Djokovic, with 12 Grand Slam singles titles, needs two to equal Sampras and Nadal and five to catch Federer. Williams is tied with Graf with 22 major titles, two behind all-time leader Margaret Smith Court. What must Serena and Djokovic do to successfully hit the reset button?Pam Shriver, and ESPN analyst who won 21 Grand Slam doubles titles, said they need to make an immediate impression.I think they have to play well in Australia -- maybe not win it but go deep in the draw, she said. For their own confidence and also sending a message to rest of the field. I think its going to be easier for Djokovic than Serena. I dont have lot of confidence in this mid-30s-take-four-months-off thing. I hope she can prove me wrong. Until then, I am skeptical.I think theyll both win majors; one of them will win more than one. The current No. 1s, Kerber and Murray, are in it to win it for the year. On the mens side, I think it will be the most unpredictable year since 2003 going back to Federers first Slam. ' ' '
