AUBURN HILLS, Mich. Vince Carter Jersey . -- Josh Smith was annoyed with himself earlier in the week, when his jumper with the game on the line missed badly and Detroit went on to lose to the New York Knicks. So when Smith had the ball in the final seconds again Saturday night, he went straight to the basket. "I wanted to be aggressive," Smith said. "When I caught it, I didnt want to settle." Smiths driving, left-handed bank shot with 1.2 seconds left gave the Pistons a 110-108 win over the Phoenix Suns on Saturday night. Smith finished with 25 points and 11 rebounds, and Brandon Jennings had 18 assists, the most in the NBA this season, to go with eight points and eight rebounds. Smith was involved in a few big plays in the final half-minute -- both good and bad. His 3-pointer as the shot clock expired put Detroit ahead 108-105 with 26.8 seconds left. Then he fouled Gerald Green while the Phoenix guard was shooting a 3-pointer. Green made all three free throws to tie it with 4.3 seconds remaining. The ensuing inbounds pass went to Smith near the top of the key. He drove to the right and then switched hands, making a tough shot while being tightly defended by Channing Frye. Greens 3-pointer at the buzzer from in front of the Detroit bench missed badly. "This is a great game for us, to be able to see how mentally strong we can be," Smith said. "Weve just got to be able to reflect on these games and apply it to the games that we have in front of us." Frye led Phoenix with 21 points. The Suns tied the game with a 13-3 run to start the fourth quarter, but Detroit responded with a 7-0 run. It was 105-97 before Phoenix scored eight straight points, tying it on a 3-pointer by P.J. Tucker with 51.2 seconds left. "We had one game this year where we came from 21 back, and we usually fight hard," Tucker said. The Pistons barely got a shot off on their next possession, but Smith was able to free himself on the left wing and connect from 3-point range. It was his first of two big shots at the end. "Those were two tough shots that Josh made," Suns coach Jeff Hornacek said. "We let him get to the basket at the end, but he was going in the wrong direction and still knocked that down. Before that, we play great defence, they lose the ball and they manage to bat it out to him and he hits the 3. Thats just a bad break for us." Jennings equaled team records held by Isiah Thomas with 11 assists in the first quarter and 16 in the first half. But Jennings didnt have any points, rebounds or assists in the fourth quarter. Backup Will Bynum picked up the slack a bit, scoring eight of his 16 points in the final period. "Sometimes in those fourth quarters Brandon was alone out there as far as creating and thats kind of tough on him," Bynum said. "So when were out there we help him out a lot and that spreads the court out." Detroit has been a disappointment after signing Smith and trading for Jennings in the off-season, but those two looked sharp for most of the night Saturday. In the first quarter, the Pistons looked as smooth and cohesive as they have all season, repeatedly beating the transition-oriented Suns down the court for easy baskets. Jennings tossed an alley-oop off the backboard to Andre Drummond for a 12-3 lead, and later in the quarter his alley-oop to Smith gave him 10 assists. Jennings then found Kyle Singler for a dunk that made it 35-19. The Pistons finished the quarter with 16 assists on 17 field goals -- and a 35-21 lead. Even when Jennings shot an airball at the end of the second quarter Drummond was there to tip it in at the buzzer for a 64-51 lead. Detroit had 50 points in the paint in the first half. The Pistons finished with 68. The last player with 16 assists in a half was Jason Kidd, who did it April 5, 2009, for Dallas, according to STATS. That was also against Phoenix. The last player with at least 11 assists in a quarter was Steve Blake, who had 14 for Portland in 2009. Phoenix was without guard Eric Bledsoe, who had surgery Friday on his right knee. NOTES: Thomas had 16 assists in a half against Dallas on Feb. 13, 1985. He tied the team record with 25 assists in that game. He twice reached 11 assists in a quarter. ... Tottenham 2-0 Man City highlights Stoke - B+It was their strongest performance of the season so far. Joe Allen was excellent and the man of the match at Old Trafford for me. It was a shame for them that Xherdan Shaqiris final ball was poor far too often, though. The set-pieces were absolutely abysmal and I cant believe they kept letting him take them. If Stokes final pass was better, they could have opened Man Utd up and scored more goals. That is a promising sign. Joe Allen celebrates his equaliser for Stoke City at Man Utd West Brom - B+They dominated spells of the game against Sunderland, and Matt Phillips and Craig Dawson got forward well on the right flank. Salomon Rondon put in another good shift, but Tony Pulis stayed quite rigid until late in the game and if they had scored the second goal when they were on top, they would have won. They just failed to kill it off and thats why its not an A performance.Liverpool - B+Liverpool maintained their momentum and their belief will grow having showed character to come from behind. When Roberto Firmino, Philippe Coutinho, Sadio Mane and Adam Lallana get it right, it is so exciting to watch. We all enjoyed Jurgen Klopp on Monday Night Football, but his team is prone to mood swings defensively. For me, they are not strong enough to win the title, but Im tipping them to make the top four with no European football. Swansea 1-2 Liverpool highlights Crystal Palace - BIt was a good away performance and I thought they could have won the match at the end too. They have found success in terms of feeding Christian Benteke. What a wonderful header that was. Palace need Andros Townsend on the left to feed Benteke, because when he plays on the right he cuts in and shoots. With him mainly on the left and Wilfried Zaha on the right, they can supply the big striker. Ref watch: Koscielny call correct Ref Watch: Laurent Koscielnys winning goal was correctly awarded Watford - BThey kept coming back, twice showing character against Bournemouth, and they could have won it. The one thing thats frustrating me with Watford is Odion Ighalo. He looks like he needs to come out of the team. Nordin Amrabat impressed me and Troy Deeney always does, and Watford more than played their part in a very entertaining game. Watford 2-2 Bournemouth highlights Bournemouth - BI love the fact Eddie Howe doesnt change his style. I thought they were a little bit soft-centred but on Soccer Saturday we identified Harry Arter, who is aggressive in the tackle and good on the ball too. He can physically disrupt the opposition and it looks like, with Jack Wilshere adding a little more class in midfield, Howe has the balance right. We know Bournemouth are capable of scoring goals, but they should have seen the game out.Middlesbrough - BAitor Karanka will be pleased with a point, which stops a run of defeats. I thought they played really well, and it looks like Calum Chambers is settling into the back four, which is a good sign. They are well drilled and in Cristhian Stuani, they have a goalscorer. Defensively and style-wise, they looked very solid. West Ham 1-1 Middlesbrough highlights Sunderland - BThey played with drive and passion in the first 20 minutes and had the crowd behind them, but the terrifying thing is David Moyes is right to say this is another season battling relegation. Some of their players are not good enough to take it any further. With 20 minutes gone and after just two West Brom attacks, Sunderland became the most nervous team Ive seen at this level. But then, with 20 minutes to go and 1-0 down, Moyes changed the game with his substitutions and all of a sudden the crowd got behind them and they created chances again. They showed a bit of fight, which I liked, but this team is really low on confidence and nervous as a kitten. Sunderland 1-1 West Brom highlights Arsenal - BSometimes when youre not playing well, you just need to grind out a result and thats what Arsenal did. It was an incredibly lucky goal because there were a couple of controversies to it with the handball and a possible offside. Overall, they werent silky smooth in attack, but Burnley made it difficult and it takes two to tango. Grayson Allen Jersey. You could see the smiles on the Arsenal players faces at the end because they knew it was a big three points. Burnley 0 - 1 Arsenal highlights Man Utd - B-I thought Man Utd played OK, and I wouldnt totally disagree with Jose Mourinhos optimistic outlook after the game. Sometimes he looks to camouflage bad performances, but in this one they created plenty of chances. They didnt always use the ball well, but they played with a purpose and an energy that was threatening, the only thing was, they werent clinical enough. Manchester Utd 1-1 Stoke highlights Chelsea - C+Antonio Conte will be chuffed to bits. Diego Costa got back on the goal trail, Willian also scored a really nice goal, but they didnt play well so thats why they miss out on a B. They looked clinical and its a case of take the clean sheet, the three points and move on because there are still issues at Chelsea. Hull 0-2 Chelsea highlights Southampton - C+Charlie Austin had a couple of chances, and although he was unlucky to hit the post, he probably should have scored at least one. It was a relatively bland performance after a tough European away game. They could have won the match, but a draw was a fair result.Burnley - CIm not being disrespectful to Burnley, but their plan seemed to be to rely upon being a threat at set-pieces. They were organised and tough to break down but I think you need to offer more than that in your home games. In their defence, the goal they conceded was bad luck and there were encouraging signs for Sean Dyche, but at Turf Moor I thought they could have had more of a go. Leicester 0-0 Southampton highlights Leicester - CTeams can find it difficult to adjust after playing European football in midweek and it seemed to be the case for both Leicester and Southampton. It wasnt an inspiring game and there was very little in it. I thought Leicester would kick on after beating Porto, and while they did look solid on Sunday, it was pretty ordinary in terms of performance.West Ham - CWest Ham were really struggling to break down Middlesbrough, but when you have class in your team you feel something will come, and it was a stunning individual goal by Dimitri Payet. I think we shouted, hit it five times and he just kept on going and going. A wonderful strike. The second-half performance was decent after an ordinary first half. They lacked fluency and there are still problems Slaven Bilic has to resolve at the club. Payet’s solo stunner for West Ham Swansea - CSwansea played well, but obviously it was not enough to save Francesco Guidolin. When you go in front as they did on Saturday, and then you have two or three more opportunities to score, you need to get the result. Everton - CI thought it would be tight against Palace, and the reason Im not giving them a higher grade is they should have gone on and won, and I was disappointed in Ross Barkleys performance again. Im a fan of his, but it looks like Sam Allardyces decision to leave him out of his first England squad has set him back. It seems hes not quite recovered and I think Ronald Koeman might be tempted to take him out of the team and make him prove his worth. Everton 1-1 Crystal Palace highlights Hull City - DYou can see theyve lost their momentum after a fast start, and off the pitch they have dallied over the role of interim manager when they should have just nailed it down. The club have not handled that situation well, and the players seem to have lost belief as a result. They were together and spirited, but lacked quality up front, and its going to be a long season.Man City - DWelcome to reality. The City juggernaut took a hit against Spurs, who were better in every area. I love City and am a massive Pep Guardiola fan, but every system is vulnerable. When they click, they are fabulous to watch, but when they dont, they lack fluency and look nervous.
