ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan quarterback Wilton Speight remains day-to-day with a shoulder injury, according to head coach Jim Harbaugh, heading into a rivalry game against Ohio State with playoff implications this coming week.Speight did not play for the Wolverines in a 20-10 win over Indiana on Saturday afternoon. He started the first 10 games of the season but injured his non-throwing shoulder in a loss to Iowa on Nov. 12. In the week leading up to Saturdays game, Harbaugh said Speights status was up in the air, and that message didnt change during the coachs postgame comments.Well see, Harbaugh said when asked if Speight will practice at the start of this week. Its day-to-day.Redshirt junior John OKorn replaced Speight in the starting lineup Saturday. He completed seven of his 16 pass attempts for 59 yards and ran for 19 net yards. He scrambled for 30 yards on a third-down play that breathed some life into a stagnant Wolverines offense in the third quarter.Harbaugh said he was pleased with OKorn, especially given the conditions on a windy, snowy evening in Ann Arbor. It was tough conditions to operate, especially in the passing game, Harbaugh said. He did extremely well. Ball security was fantastic all day. He managed the team and did what he needed to do.Michigans offense gained only 110 yards in the first half and failed to convert a third-down attempt until the third quarter. OKorn said the offense didnt get off to a good start, but he didnt think that was due to any rust he had. OKorns last start came as a sophomore at Houston in October 2014. He transferred to Michigan last spring. After the game last Sunday afternoon, OKorn said he knew that he would be the starter for this weekends game. He said he planned to spend the next week preparing as if hell be on the field against the No. 2-ranked Buckeyes in Columbus next Saturday. If (Speight)s ready to go, thats coachs decision, OKorn said. Ill support 100 percent whatever the coaches decide. I know well both be ready to go.Speight dressed in pads for Saturdays game and threw briefly during warm-ups.Both Michigan and Ohio State are likely to remain among the top four teams in the country heading into their season finale against each other. A Michigan win would clinch a trip to the Big Ten title game for the Wolverines. The NFL and NFLPA announced Sunday they will initiate a review of the handling of a helmet-to-helmet hit on Carolina quarterback Cam Newton in Thursday nights loss to the Broncos. The NFLPA announced via Twitter that it would seek a compliance investigation.?Later, the NFL released a statement saying it, too, would initiate a review of the medical teams response to the hit on Newton.Newton took at least four helmet-to-helmet hits in Thursday nights 21-20 loss, including one on Carolinas final series. Only one penalty was called -- on the last hit -- but it was negated by an intentional grounding penalty called on Newton.Medical officials went on the field Thursday night to check Newton after that final helmet-to-helmet hit and determined he showed no signs of a concussion, as first reported by NFL Network and confirmed by ESPN.The medical officials looked at video of the hit, which left the quarterback facedown on the turf and looking shaken, then went to see Newton. According to the NFL Network report, the game was stopped for 2:22, and while the offsetting penalties were sorted out, it was determined that Newton showed no signs of a concussion. The NFL on Friday morning released a statement saying the leagues concussion protocol was properly executed. But the players union said it would exercise its right to investigate the matter.Under the policy, agreed on iin July, if the NFLPAs findings dispute the leagues findings, the union can appeal to a neutral arbitrator, who has the authority to discipline the Panthers and others who were responsible for Newtons well-being.ddddddddddddThis is why we have the new policy, union spokesman George Atallah said Friday. Well look into it.After the game, Panthers coach Ron Rivera questioned the non-calls, but he did not question the officials or doctors for not placing Newton in the concussion protocol.Im not going to question the doctors. OK? Rivera said. There is a protocol. There is a set of rules that these doctors, these trained professionals, have to follow. The understanding is when everything first happened, they followed the protocol.Rivera said the team doctor and an unaffiliated neurological consultant agreed Newton did not show symptoms of a concussion to the point they felt he needed to leave the game. Neither did the officials on the field or in the replay booth.Team officials said Newton was asked questions four times following the game -- in the locker room, on the bus ride to the airport, on the plane and back in Charlotte -- to make sure there were no side effects from the hits to the head.Rivera said Newton passed all of the tests.
