PHILADELPHIA -- Ryan Howard helped the Phillies honor Jim Thome in a pregame ceremony. Then, Howard turned back the clock and showed the type of power that forced Philadelphia to trade Thome more than a decade ago.Howard hit a grand slam and drove in five runs to help Jake Thompson earn his first major league victory, a 10-6 win over the Colorado Rockies on Friday night. Before the game Thome became the 38th player inducted into the clubs wall of fame. The Phillies signed the slugger in 2002 but traded him three years later because he was blocking up-and-coming Howard at first base. You want to go out there and try to get the win on a special night like this, especially with it being alumni weekend and Thome going into the wall of fame here, Howard said. Being able to get something to hit and having it land on the other side of the fence is the bonus.Howard finished with three hits. He is batting .462 with four doubles, three homers and 10 RBI in his last eight games.Hes swinging the bat as well as Ive seen him, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said. Its good to see.Cesar Hernandez, Cameron Rupp and Aaron Altherr added two hits each for Philadelphia, which opened a nine-game homestand by winning its second straight.Charlie Blackmon hit three solo home runs and D.J. LeMahieu also went deep for the Rockies, who entered play 4 1/2 games out of the wild card.Thompson (1-1) earned his first win in his second career start after allowing three runs and two hits with six strikeouts and three walks in five innings. Its kind of nice to get the first one out of the way, and hopefully Ill gain a lot more confidence and comfort on the mound and keep it rolling, Thompson said.Howard extended his franchise record with his 14th grand slam, launching a 1-0 pitch from Jon Gray (8-6) into the Rockies bullpen in right-center field to break a 3-3 tie. The veteran slugger, who received a curtain call after the hit, tied Rocky Colavito for 76th place all-time in major league history with his 374th homer.Gray left after Howards home run, having surrendered seven runs -- six earned -- and six hits with six strikeouts and four walks in 4 1/3 innings.Philadelphia took a 3-1 lead. Odubel Herreras RBI single in the first put Philadelphia on the board and the Phillies took advantage of Colorados sloppy play in the second when Freddy Galvis scored on Gerardo Parras throwing error on Peter Bourjos double. Bourjos eventually scored on a wild pitch. It looked like we were a little low on fumes tonight, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.BLACKMON GOES DEEPThe Rockies got a run back in the third on the first of Blackmons three homers, this one off the second deck in right field, and tied it in the fifth on Nolan Arenados sacrifice fly.Blackmon hit a one-out opposite-field homer to left in the seventh for his 17th homer of the season. He has five career multi-homer games, including three this season. He went deep again in the ninth with two outs for his first career three-homer game.I was just feeling pretty good today, Blackmon said. I think my body is just feeling good. I was really tired a few weeks ago and Ive broken through and bounced back and I feel strong.THOMPSON Ks FOURThompson accomplished a rare feat when he recorded four strikeouts in one inning, becoming the first Phillies pitcher to have four strikeouts in an inning since Doc White did it against Brooklyn in the fifth inning on July 21, 1902.Thompson opened the second inning by striking out David Dahl, but Dahl reached first on a wild pitch. Dahl went to third on Parras single and scored on Nick Hundleys grounder to first on a play that Howard was charged with a throwing error. The 22-year-old right-hander, whom the Phillies acquired last season from Texas in the trade that sent ace left-hander Cole Hamels to the Rangers, responded by striking out Ben Paulsen, Daniel Descalso and Gray for four strikeouts in one inning.DAHLS STREAK SNAPPEDDahl went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts to snap his hitting streak to start his career at 17 games. Dahl was vying to become the first player in history to begin his career with a hit in 18 straight games. On Thursday, he tied the record of 17 set by Cincinnatis Chuck Aleno in 1941.I know youre not going to get a hit every game, Dahl said. I was swinging at a lot of bad pitches tonight. It was a good streak. I just have to be ready to play tomorrow.TRAINERS ROOMRockies: Colorado placed 1B Mark Reynolds on the 15-day DL with a broken left hamate bone. NEW YORK -- For the second time this week, the New York Rangers used a strong third period at home to beat the Carolina Hurricanes.Chris Kreider scored twice 4:46 apart late in the third period to lift the Rangers to a 4-2 victory over the Hurricanes on Saturday. We found a way in the third period, Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said. When the game was on the line, to play our best hockey to get two points, well take it and get ready for the next game.On Tuesday night, the Rangers trailed 2-0 before pulling within one in the second and scoring twice in the third to beat Carolina 3-2.Derek Stepan had a goal and two assists and Michael Grabner also scored, and Mats Zuccarello had two assists for the Rangers. Henrik Lundqvist stopped 21 shots to bounce back from a shaky outing at Buffalo two nights earlier and pick up his 11th win of the season.New York is also now 8-0-1 after a loss this season, and has not lost consecutive games in regulation. The Rangers also improved to 21-3-0 in the last 24 meetings with Carolina at Madison Square Garden. Were like all the teams, we need our goaltender to be one of our best players and we need our other best players, whether theyre Ds or forwards, to play at the level theyre supposed to, Vigneault said. Theres no doubt that Kreids (Kreider) did that tonight.Kreider scored the tiebreaking goal with 7:35 left as he knocked in a rebound past Hurricanes goalie Michael Leighton. Kreider then made it a two-goal game with 2:49 remaining as his shot from the left side rang off the post and deflected back in off Leighton,There was a big difference in our game, more energy, more speed to our game, Lundqvist said of the Rangers play in the final period compared to the first two. It felt like they wanted it a little bit more for two periods, but I think in this league a lot of times games are decided in the third. Teams try to stay close and then in the third you try to make that final push to make the differenceViktor Stalberg and Victor Rask scored for Carolina and Leighton finished with 24 saves in his second start of the season. The Hurricanes concluded a three-game road trip and fell to 1-4-1 in their last six games. You got to be able to spend more time in the offfensive zone, Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said.dddddddddddd When you are not in the offensive zone that means you are going to spend too much time defending. And we did that in the final 20 minutes.Carolina (9-10-5) had a strong first period, outshooting the Rangers 15-3, but Stepans goal 4:05 in gave New York a 1-0 lead. Kevin Klein joined the rush and crashed the net which allowed Stepan to control his own rebound and open up the scoring. The referee initially waived off the goal, but it counted after a review.Stalberg, who scored twice in the Hurricanes loss here Tuesday night, tied it as he beat Lundqvist with a wrist shot on the glove side. Rangers captain Ryan McDonagh tried to skate the puck out of trouble but turned it over in the neutral zone leading to Carolinas odd man rush.He fits the modern game, a big guy, that can skate well, Peters said of Stalberg. Thats what he does. Hes a guy that makes it hard (on the opponent).Defenseman Brett Pesce, a native of suburban Tarrytown, picked up the primary assist on Stalbergs goal.Grabner picked up his 13th of the season to put the Rangers up 2-1 at 5:54 of the third.Peters challenged the goal, claiming the play was offside before New York entered the zone, but the referee announced the video review was inconclusive.Rask tied it just 32 seconds later with his ninth goal of the season and 99th career NHL point as his slap shot from the point beat Lundqvist.Game notes The Rangers 13-game home winning streak against Carolina is the longest home winning streak the Rangers have posted against one opponent in franchise history. .
