J. Tyus Jones Jersey .P. Parise, a member of Canadas 1972 Summit Series team who played for the Minnesota North Stars and New York Islanders over his NHL career, has died from lung cancer. He was 73. The Minnesota Wild said that Parise died Wednesday night at his home in the Minneapolis suburb of Prior Lake. Son and Wild star Zach Parise informed the team of his fathers death. We appreciate the outpouring of support we have received from family, friends and the entire hockey community during this difficult time, the Parise family said Thursday in a statement. J.P. was a great husband, father and grandpa and will be greatly missed by all of us. During his playing career, Parise is most remembered for skating on a line with Phil Esposito and Wayne Cashman during the Summit Series and getting ejected in the eighth game, which Canada won on Paul Hendersons famous goal. Parise played in six of the eight games during the legendary series against the Soviet Union. Friend and longtime teammate Tom Reid said he has a photo of Parise going after the referee in that game hanging in his pub. I think that kind of turned things around, Reid told reporters in St. Paul, Minn. The referee didnt call any more penalties against Canada. He was a big part of the success of that. Hockey Canada chief operating officer Scott Smith credits that team for the growth of the game across Canada. I think that group of 1972 players contributed greatly to both things: the interest in international hockey and the significance of any Canada-Russia game but also for the development of coaches at the grassroots level, Smith said in a phone interview. Sidney Crosby, who played for Parise at Shattuck-St. Marys prep school, said during Canadas 2014 Olympic orientation camp that some of what he knows of the Canada-Russia rivalry came from his coach. Parise, a native of Smooth Rock Falls, Ont., spent most of his NHL career with the North Stars and was a two-time all-star. He had 594 points (238 goals, 356 assists) in 890 games from 1965-79 with the Boston Bruins, Toronto Maple Leafs, North Stars, Islanders and Cleveland Barons. The National Hockey League family mourns the passing and cherishes the memory of J.P. Parise, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman said in a statement. Especially in his adopted home state of Minnesota, J.P. was a consummate player, teacher and administrator in the game. The Parise name has been prominent in Minnesota hockey since the 1960s, and J.P.s commitment and passion for the NHL lives on through his son, Zach. The NHL sends heartfelt condolences to J.P.s family, to his friends, to the Minnesota Wild organization and to all the organizations J.P. represented with such passion. After retirement, Parise spent nine seasons as a North Stars assistant coach. He later ran the hockey program at Shattuck-St. Marys school in Faribault, one of the top prep hockey schools in the U.S. Parise helped oversee the growth of NHL stars such as Crosby and Jonathan Toews. He was the director when they were here and was a big part of those guys, Shattuck-St. Marys hockey director Tom Ward said. I know both those guys spent some weekends at the Parises house and he let them come over and stay in Zach and Jordans bedroom a couple weekends and helped those kids along when they were a long way from home and young kids and was a mentor to a lot of kids here. In an interview last year with the Star Tribune, Parise was philosophical about his cancer. Thats life, he said. If someone was to tell you today that youre going to be going at 77, 78, youd say, Boy, thats not bad. I never think of this shortening my life, this shortening anything Im going to do. Im still going to travel, Im still going to watch hockey. Over the weekend, Zach Parise talked about the impending loss of his father with the Star Tribune. Its the hardest thing Ive ever had to deal with in my life, he told the newspaper. You try and find that separation, you try to come here and be around the guys and not think about it, and Yeozie (coach Mike Yeo) has been really good and the teams been really good giving me the day off, saying basically, Just show up for games. Theyve been really supportive about it, but the hard part about it is you try to go to the rink and forget about stuff, but the hard part is, this was kind of our thing. Hockey was our thing, Parise added, fighting back tears. Him coming to every game or watching every game and talking to him after every game and talking hockey, thats not there anymore. In a sport steeped with bravado, what happened next was another familiar, but treacherous, move: Wearing a black firesuit and black helmet, the 20-year-old Ward unbuckled himself, climbed out of the winged car into the night and defiantly walked onto the track at Canandaigua Motorsports Park. He gestured, making his disgust evident with the driver who triggered the wreck with a bump: three-time NASCAR champion Tony Stewart, who continues to race in sprint cars on dirt tracks. Many NASCAR drivers, including Stewart, got their start on the short ovals. Ward, a relative unknown compared to NASCARs noted swashbuckler, was nearly hit by another passing car as he pointed with his right arm in Stewarts direction. As he confronted Stewart in his passing car, disaster struck. Ward was standing to the right of Stewarts familiar No. 14 car, which seemed to fishtail from the rear and hit him. According to video and witness accounts, Ward was sucked underneath the car and hurtled through the air before landing on his back as fans looked on in horror. Ward was killed. Stewart, considered one of the most proficient drivers in racing, dropped out of Sundays NASCAR race at Watkins Glen, hours after Saturdays crash. And the sport was left reeling from a tragedy that could have ripple effects from the biggest stock car series down to weeknight dirt track racing. "There arent words to describe the sadness I feel about the accident that took the life of Kevin Ward Jr.," Stewart said in a statement. There was no immediate decision if Stewart would drive in this weekends NASCAR race at Michigan International Speedway. Stewart "will have as much time as he needs to make that decision," spokesman Mike Arning said Monday. "It is still an emotional time for all involved, Tony included. He is grieving, and grief doesnt have a timetable." Arning said Stewarts extra-curricular racing plans are on hold until further notice. Plymouth Speedway in Warsaw, Indiana, said on its website that Stewart would no longer compete in Saturdays race. Canandaigua Speedway promoter Jeremie Corcoran said Monday the track has cancelled Wednesdays event to give "my family, staff, fans, and racing teams time to grieve and process all that has occurred." Authorities questioned the 43-year-old Stewart once on Saturday night and went to Watkins Glen to talk to him again Sunday. They described him as "visibly shaken" after the crash and said he was co-operative. On Sunday, Ontario County Sheriff Philip Povero said that investigators also dont have any evidence at this point in the investigation to support criminal intent. But he also said that criminal charges have not been ruled out. Povero said on Monday there were no plans "at this time" to talk to Stewart again. There is no timetable as to when the investigation will conclude or autopsy results will be finished, he said. The crash raised several questions: Will Wards death cause drivers to think twice about on-track confrontations? Did Stewart try and send hhis own message by buzzing Ward, only to have his risky move turn fatal? "I think even with the video, its going to be tough to prove that this was more than just an accident and that it was even culpable negligence, which he shouldve known or shouldve believed that by getting close to this guy, that it was going to cause the accident," he said. The sheriff renewed a plea for spectators to turn over photos and videos of the crash. Investigators were reconstructing the accident and looking into everything from the dim lighting on a portion of the track to how muddy it was, as well as if Wards dark firesuit played a role in his death, given the conditions. Driver Cory Sparks, a friend of Wards, was a few cars back when Ward was killed. "The timing was unsafe," he said of Wards decision to get out of his car to confront Stewart. "When your adrenaline is going, and youre taken out of a race, your emotions flare." Its often just a part of racing. Drivers from mild-mannered Jeff Gordon to Danica Patrick have erupted in anger on the track at another driver. The confrontations are part of the sports allure: Fans love it and cheer wildly from the stands. Stewart, who has a reputation for being a hothead nicknamed "Smoke," once wound up like a pitcher and tossed his helmet like a fastball at Matt Kenseths windshield. "Ive seen it many times in NASCAR, where a driver will confront the other one, and a lot of times theyll try to speed past them. And thats what it appeared to me as if what Tony Stewart did, he tried to speed past Ward," witness Michael Messerly said. "And the next thing I could see, I didnt see Ward any more. It just seemed like he was suddenly gone." The crash also raised questions about whether Stewart will continue with his hobby of racing on small tracks on the side of the big-money NASCAR races. He has long defended his participation in racing on tracks like the one where the crash happened, even as accidents and injury have put his day job in NASCAR at risk. Saturdays crash came almost exactly a year after Stewart suffered a compound fracture to his right leg in a sprint car race in Iowa. The injury cost him the second half of the NASCAR season and sidelined him during the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship. Stewart only returned to sprint track racing last month. The crash site is the same track where Stewart was involved in a July 2013 accident that seriously injured a 19-year-old driver. He later took responsibility for his car making contact with another and triggering the 15-car accident that left Alysha Ruggles with a compression fracture in her back. "Everybody has hobbies," he said last month, adding that "there are a lot of other things I could be doing that are a lot more dangerous and a lot bigger waste of time with my time off do than doing that."
