The Texas Rangers have a long list of injured starting pitchers, so they made a strong move to acquire one of the top available starters. Numbers Game breaks down the Rangers acquisition of Matt Garza. The Rangers Get: RHP Matt Garza Garza, 29, is a hard-throwing starting pitcher who has been stellar for the Cubs this season, once he joined the rotation May 21, after recovering from a strained lat muscle. In 11 starts for Chicago, Garza is 6-1 with a career-low 3.17 ERA and career-best 1.14 WHIP, striking out 62 in 71 innings. In three seasons with the Cubs, Garza owns a 1.21 WHIP, which puts him in solid company, with Zack Greinke, CC Sabathia and Gio Gonzalez and his 3.45 ERA over that span ranks 23rd among qualified starting pitchers. Garza is not as overpowering as he has been in past years, but Garza still averages 92.7 MPH with his fastball and has stayed with harder stuff, throwing fewer change-ups than at any other point in his career. Going to Texas is a trouble spot, for any pitcher, not just Garza. Its a small sample, but in five career starts at Rangers Park, Garza is 2-3 with a 6.04 ERA and 1.31 WHIP, striking out 30 in 28 1/3 innings. Hardly definitive, but not encouraging either. Texas has gone virtually the whole season without Colby Lewis, Neftali Feliz and Matt Harrison due to injuries, then Alexi Ogando and Nick Tepesch have joined them on the DL, making it increasingly difficult for the Rangers to keep pace in the American League West. Garza, who will be a free agent at seasons end, is making $10.25-million this season, and will be an upgrade for the Rangers depleted rotation, giving them a better shot at a playoff berth. Additionally, hes a power arm and power arms tend to rule the postseason. The Cubs Get: 3B Mike Olt, RHP C.J. Edwards, RHP Justin Grimm and a player to be named later. Olt is a 24-year-old power-hitting third baseman who has struggled this season. In 2012, Olt hit 28 homers and had a .977 OPS for Double-A Frisco, earning a 16-game stint with the Rangers, during which he hit .152 with a .432 OPS. This season has been more trying for Olt. Since moving to Triple-A, Olt is hitting just .213 with 11 homers and a .739 OPS in 65 games, but he had vision issues early in the year which seem to be coming around (he has an .860 OPS with 11 homers in 45 games since the beginning of June). If hes back on track, Olt is a legitimate option to become a long-term starter at third base for the Cubs. Edwards appears to be the most promising aspect of this deal for the Cubs. A 48th round pick in 2011, but a skinny kid with a big fastball, Edwards has been dominating the low minors. Leaving aside his dominant Rookie ball numbers (1.48 ERA, 0.85 WHIP in 14 GP), Edwards has a 1.92 ERA and 1.00 WHIP, with 182 strikeouts in 140 1/3 innings over 28 starts between low-A ball and Single-A. Hes 21-years-old, so hell have some time to fill out and get stronger before hes major-league ready, but could be a significant long-term asset if he continues along this development curve. 24-year-old Justin Grimm has been taking a regular, if not altogether successful turn, in the Rangers rotation this season, posting a 6.37 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in 17 starts. However, Grimms underlying numbers suggest that hes been the victim of bad luck, including a low percentage (63.8%) of runners left on base. If moving to Texas is a risky proposition for Garza, it would stand to reason that getting out of Texas could make things better for Grimm. Considering the other options for the Cubs -- Chris Rusin, Brooks Raley -- theres a good opportunity for Grimm to continue making regular starts in Chicago, effectively in an effort to audition for next years staff. Considering the Cubs were facing the prospect of losing Garza as a free agent, they got a nice return. There is uncertainty, and they might come up with nothing long-term, but there is also the possibility that the Cubs might have secured three pieces that could be part of the roster for many years to come. The 29-year-old Baines has established himself as one of the top attacking full backs in the country and was the subject of two bids from United during the last off-season. Everton manager Roberto Martinez says that keeping Baines at the club is a "massive boost and exciting for the future" because he brings "maturity and football knowledge in a very specialized position on the pitch" and an "infectious and positive influence to the rest of the squad. DARLINGTON, S.C. -- Blake Koch changed goals in a hurry. The driver for a first-year Xfinity Series team knew coming into season that competing for a title sounded like a far-fetched notion. Then came the series first-ever Chase championship format. When they announced the Chase, it was like, `Man, thats a good goal, to make the Chase, Koch said at Darlington Raceway last weekend. Now here we are and its a realistic goal. After more than a decade of success and format tweaks at the Sprint Cup level, NASCAR has brought its playoffs to its two other series, Xfinity and Camping World Trucks. Twelve Xfinity drivers and eight truck racers will go through Sprint Cup-style eliminations until things are decided in a triple-header championship weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway in November. The new format means many, many drivers are learning how to chase. And the cutoff is down to the wire as racers in both series have two more chances to make the field. In this case, it gives the Xfinity drivers something to really go after, said Justin Allgaier, a one-time Cup driver now racing fulltime in NASCARs second-tier series. It gives you a chance to really go out there and be better.Think getting in doesnt matter? Just watch the Ricky Bobby-style ending of last weeks truck race at Canadian Tire Motorsports Park. John Hunter Nemechek , previously qualified for the playoffs with a series win, and first-racer-out Cole Custer slammed into each other down the stretch and were off the track and in the grass as they crossed the finish line with Nemechek inches ahead. A short time later, Custer ran full bore at his rival and took him to the ground with a body slam.We didnt wreck him for the win, rubbing is racing, said Nemechek, the 19-year-old son of Front Row Joe Nemechek.Nonetheless, Custer is ninth -- and out of playoff contention if things started this week. The Chase format is what we need in our sport, said Elliott Sadler , the Xfinity points leader and last weeks winner at Darlington. Ive seen huge success at the Cup level, especially among fans. Man, it really ramps up the pressure and intensity ffor the last couple of weeks of the season.ddddddddddddThere are no Chase 101 guidebooks for drivers to study in preparation.Koch, who is without a win, sits 11th among the 12 Xfinity Chase drivers, 22 points ahead of No. 13 Dakoda Armstrong. Team strategy meetings include a mix of keeping smart to avoid race-ending wrecks and staying aggressive for a win or top finish to lock up a playoff spot. Its a little different, Koch said. The Chase format was a big reason Xfinity signed on as a 10-year sponsor two seasons ago, according to Matt Lederer, senior director of sports marketing at Comcast. Lederer said the company liked how unknown drivers like Chase Elliott, who won a series title in 2014, could make a name in the sport through the Xfinity Series before moving up to Sprint Cup.When NASCAR came and brought the Chase idea to us, we said from a brand and marketing side, it fits really, really well, he said.Allgaier, who spent 2014 and 2015 running Sprint Cup fulltime, is qualified for the playoffs. He didnt make the Cup grid last year, but was part of strategizing and talk in the garage.Im not going to say that it makes me any better because of it, Allgaier said. But at least it preps me for what challenges I think are going to be there.Chris Buescher won the last Chase-less Xfinity title in 2015 and is in the Sprint Cup playoffs with a race at Richmond to go. Buescher has a win at rain-shortened Pocono and is clinging to 30th in points, the last place a driver with a victory can be and still qualify. He said he is proud consistency earned him a title last year and is mindful thats not the case this fall. The problem with it is if you run into one accident in three races and youre in a bad spot where before it was one accident in 36 (races) and you can recover, he said. Its going to be about all-out speed.Still, the new formats timing is not great for everyone.I just wish maybe now theyd have waited one year before they did it, laughed series leader Sadler.
