Needing a successful road trip to stay in the American Associations wild card race, the Winnipeg Goldeyes were anything but successful Monday night to begin the trek through Minnesota and South Dakota. The Goldeyes lost 14-1 to the St. Paul Saints at Midway Stadium in Minnesota in the first game of the four-game series and seven-game road trip, which concludes against the Sioux Falls Canaries on the weekend. The Goldeyes have 13 games remaining on their regular season schedule and have lost four of their last six games after winning seven of eight contests. Winnipeg starter Pete Gehle surrendered single runs in the first and second innings before giving up a two-run homer to St. Paul first baseman Brian Burgamy in the fifth inning. Goldeyes third baseman Amos Ramon singled in Kevin Moesquit in the top of the sixth inning to break St. Pauls shutout, but Winnipeg reliever Kaohi Downing was tagged by a Donald Blunt solo home run in the bottom of the frame to increase the Saints lead to 5-1. St. Paul added three more runs in the seventh inning off Gabe Aguilar for an 8-1 lead. After Winnipeg manager Rick Forney was ejected by home plate umpire John Durante for arguing balls and strikes following the top of the eighth inning, the game got way out of hand in the bottom of the frame. St. Paul touched Gabe Aguilar for four more runs and Blunt hit a grand slam off Goldeyes designated-hitter-turned-pitcher Casey Haerther as part of a six-run inning for the home side. It capped a five-RBI night for Blunt. Of Winnipegs six hits in the game, three came from Ray Sadler, who went three-for-four in the contest. Ramon had the Goldeyes lone RBI. Gehle suffered the loss for the for the fourth consecutive start, which ties a Goldeyes franchise record, and combined with three relievers to allow 17 hits. Former Texas Ranger Mark Hamburger went eight innings for the Saints in a winning cause. The Goldeyes and Saints will go at it again in St. Paul Tuesday night. Winnipeg will look to rebound by sending left Chris Salamida to the mound, while St. Paul will counter with Billy Soule.
