EAST LANSING, Mich. -- A doctor accused of sexually abusing two gymnasts was fired Tuesday by Michigan State University, which said its police have received additional allegations of abuse since last week. Two gymnasts, including a member of the 2000 U.S. womens Olympic team, have said they were sexually abused as teenagers by Larry Nassar, a former longtime doctor for USA Gymnastics. Those allegations came to light last week in a report by the Indianapolis Star newspaper.Michigan State, where Nassar was a faculty member, said last week that he was investigated in 2014 over another allegation of misconduct, but the school found no violation of its policy. School spokesman Jason Cody said Tuesday that since last week, university police have received more allegations of abuse by Nassar, spanning decades.Cody said Michigan State authorities are devoting significant resources to reviewing these accusations.Michigan State reassigned Nassar from clinical and patient duties as of Aug. 30, a day after a complaint from one of the gymnasts was made to authorities.Over the past week, the university received additional information that raised serious concerns about Nassars compliance with certain employment requirements, Cody said in a statement Tuesday. Those requirements were put in place after a 2014 investigation into alleged misconduct by Nassar, and information was received that indicates those requirements were not consistently met.Cody did not provide additional detail about what new requirements Nassar faced after the 2014 investigation. The decision was made to initiate the faculty process to terminate Nassars fixed-term appointment. On Sept. 20, he was fired, Codys statement said. It is important to note this decision does not affect the ongoing investigations by MSU Police and MSUs Office of Institutional Equity of allegations of sexual abuse. An attorney for Nassar declined to comment Tuesday.Nassar is accused of sexually groping and fondling an Olympic gymnast during her elite career, according to a lawsuit filed recently in California by the athlete under the name Jane Doe.Attorney John Manly, who is representing Jane Doe in the lawsuit, said he has been approached by 10 female athletes treated by Nassar, including gymnasts and athletes from other disciplines, since her lawsuit was filed. Manly said the accusers range in age from their teens to 40 and include former NCAA athletes among others. Manly said he anticipates other cases being filed, predicting that Jane Does lawsuit is certainly not the last. The second gymnast, Rachael Denhollander of Louisville, Kentucky, told the Indianapolis Star that Nassar sexually abused her in 2000 while she underwent treatment for lower back pain at Michigan State. She said she filed a complaint last month with university police. The Associated Press typically does not identify people who say they have been sexually abused, but Denhollander is speaking out publicly about the case.Michigan State said last week that Nassar was investigated in 2014 when a graduate of the school filed a complaint. An administrative investigation found no violation of school policy, and the local prosecutors office did not file charges after an investigation by MSU police.USA Gymnastics said last week that it cut ties with Nassar when the organizations president, Steve Penny, went to authorities immediately after learning of athlete concerns about Nassar in the summer of 2015.---AP Sports Writer Will Graves in Pittsburgh contributed to this report. RIO DE JANEIRO -- Michael Phelps didnt have much time to savor his double gold-medal night. He was back at the Olympic Aquatics Stadium on Wednesday, getting started on his bid to win the 200-meter individual medley for the fourth straight time. After five hours of sleep, Phelps said he actually felt rather fresh for the afternoon preliminaries. He cruised through his heat with the third-fastest time overall, 1 minute, 58.41 seconds, which trailed only American teammate Ryan Lochte (1:57.38) and Germanys Philip Heintz (1:57.59).It really wasnt that bad, said Phelps, who won both the 200 butterfly and 4x200 freestyle relay late Tuesday night. Ive been able to put my body through things like this over the years. Hopefully I can keep it rolling one more time. The 31-year-old Phelps moved on to the evening semifinals, carrying on his bid to become a four-time champion in an event he first won at the 2004 Athens Olympics. The 200 IM is one of two races that Phelps can win for the fourth straight time, along with the still-to-come 100 butterfly.Phelps said hes been texting with former Baltimore Ravens star Ray Lewis, talking about the right way to end his career. Lewis closed out with a Super Bowl victory.Leaving everything in the pool one last time is what Im going to do, Phelps said. If thats good enough to win, well see.The Americans also led preliminaries of the womens 4x200 freestyle relay with a group that, in a bit of a surprise, included Missy Franklin.Even though she finished second at the U.S. Olympic trials, which normally wouldve meant giving her the afternoon off along with expected anchor Katie Ledecky, Franklins poor form prompted the coaches to rest Leah Smith instead.Anytime I can be on a relay -- whether its morning, night, in practice, whatever it is -- it means the absolute world to me, said Franklin, who didnt even qualify for the final of the 200 freestyle and has only one individual event left after the relay. We got out there and did our job. We needed to get them a good lane tonight. We know our coaches are going to make the decision putting our best foot forward. With Ledecky and Smith assureed on being on the team for the final, that left two available spots.ddddddddddddAllison Schmitt, competing in what is likely the final event of her career, clearly earned one of them with a blistering split time of 1:55.95.Franklin (1:57.03) and Melanie Margalis (1:57.04) were essentially even, though Franklins experience and resume as a five-time medalist at the 2012 London Games would seemingly give her an edge for the fourth position. Cierra Runge was the slowest of the group, 1:57.75.I want whats best for this team, Franklin said. If thats not including me, then thats what I want. If thats including me, then thats what I want. I want whats best for us and best for our country, no matter what.In other events Wednesday afternoon, world-record holder Cate Campbell of Australia was top qualifier in the 100 freestyle with an Olympic-record time of 52.78. Simone Manuel of the United States took the second spot, followed by Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden and defending Olympic champion Ranomi Kromowidjojo of the Netherlands.Another American, Abbey Weitzeil, advanced with the seventh-fastest time. So did Campbells younger sister, reigning world champion Bronte, in the eighth spot.Rikke Moller Pedersen of Denmark set the pace in the womens 200 breaststroke, which provides another chance for American Lilly King and Russias Yulia Efimova to carry on their rivalry. This one doesnt figure to be as dramatic as their showdown in the 100 breast.King, who beat Efimova for the gold in the shorter race after calling out the Russians doping history, is not nearly as dominant in the longer race. She barely qualified for the semifinals with the 15th-best time. Efimova was eighth.Russias Evgeny Rylov led the way in the 200 backstroke, followed by Chinas Xu Jiayu, Australias Mitch Larkin and Americans Ryan Murphy and Jacob Pebley.Murphy already won gold in the 100 back.---Follow Paul Newberry on Twitter at www.twitter.com/pnewberry1963.
