PALM BEACH, Florida - NHL commissioner Gary Bettman expects a review of the NHLs concussion spotter program at the next board meeting, during All-Star week in late January, but he praised the effectiveness of the program so far this season. He said he received no concerns from his ownership group about how the concussion spotter program, bulked up this season with centralized spotters in the New York player safety room, has been implemented.Actually, everybody thinks the spotter program is working great, just as it was intended, Bettman said.Wayne Gretzky spoke Friday after attending his first board meeting since leaving the then-Phoenix Coyotes in 2009. He applauded the use of centralized concussion spotters as part of the NHLs effort to better protect players. When I played -- one of my kids asked me if I ever got a concussion -- I can honestly tell you I dont even know, Gretzky said.?Because in those days theyd say, Take two aspirin tonight, tomorrow youre going to skate for an hour and were going to sweat it out of you. Thats what we did.We have so much more knowledge now from the doctor side of things, from the trainers, from the players themselves, and yet theres so much more to learn about it, Gretzky said. Is everybody perfectly happy when the best player gets pulled off? No. But its protocol -- thats what the rules are and youve got to live with it.There was criticism of the program recently after Edmontons Connor McDavid was pulled from a game against the Wild on Sunday when he was tripped and his chin hit the ice.McDavid and some of his teammates werent happy he was pulled from the game for concussion testing, tests he passed. There have also been concerns raised about putting in a backup goalie without proper warm-up if a starting goalie is removed by a concussion spotter. As more high-profile cases emerge and the games increase in importance as the playoffs move closer, the debate will likely get louder. But thats exactly why the program is in place, Bettman said. The reason you have the spotter program is exactly for the instances the people are talking about because players typically ... dont want to come out of a game, Bettman said. We think being cautious, having protocols and enforcing them is the best way to ensure it. Does that mean some players are going to get pulled who didnt have concussions? Sure. But it also means were going to make sure the players who need to be off the ice are off the ice.The second day of the NHLs board of governors meetings passed without major news emerging. According to Bettman, the session was filled with routine informational updates, on issues like the centennial celebration, relationships with television rights holders and a World Cup wrap-up.Everybody in the room believes, as do we, that we were able to re-establish this event in a very big way, major way, Bettman said of the World Cup. There are a variety of things were focused on to do it even better the next time we do it, whenever that might be. I think people were pleased with it.The NHL also filled out its executive committee, adding Montreal Canadiens owner Geoff Molson and Winnipeg co-owner Mark Chipman to the committee in place of the late Ed Snider and Carolina owner Peter Karmanos.Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.? Drew Brees threw a pair of touchdown passes in the first half and the guys on the other side made sure that was enough, sending the Saints to a 17-13 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday night. A look at whats happening all around the majors Saturday:---WINNERS AT WRIGLEYThe Cubs can set a team record with their 57th home victory when they host the Cardinals at Wrigley Field. Jason Hammel (15-9, 3.56) is trying to prove himself worthy of a postseason rotation spot for the NL Central champs, though he hasnt helped himself with a 6.87 ERA in three starts this month. Rookie Alex Reyes (3-1, 1.03) gets his fourth start for St. Louis riding a scoreless streak of 11 1/3 innings.RICKS ROLLRick Porcello (21-4, 3.08) can become baseballs second 22-game winner in the past five years when Boston plays at Tampa Bay. Jake Arrieta won 22 games while earning the NL Cy Young Award last season, making him baseballs biggest winner since Justin Verlander won 24 times with Detroit in 2011. Porcello likely only has two starts left, so Verlanders mark is out of reach, but that win total combined with his late-season dominance -- hes 7-2 with a 2.38 ERA since Aug. 1 -- could give him an edge in the AL Cy Young race.BUILDING UPClayton Kershaw (11-3, 1.73) tries to stretch out even more before the postseason when the Dodgers face the Rockies. Kershaw was limited to 66 and 64 pitches in his first two starts after returning from the disabled list, then jumped up to 88 pitches in a 2-1 win over the Giants in his last start. Despite missing more than two months, Kershaw (6.1) entered Friday trailing only Jose Fernandez (6.2) in wins above replacement, per Fangraphs .ddddddddddddIGHT THAT RANGERThe Rangers hope to get Yu Darvish on track in a game against Oakland before beginning what they hope is a deep postseason run. Darvish (5-5, 3.81) has a 7.47 ERA in his past three starts, including when he allowed seven runs over five innings last time out against the As. Darvish is stumbling at the end of a season that included his successful return from Tommy John surgery, though Texas is just 8-7 this season with their Japanese ace on the mound.SEARAGES LATEST STARIvan Nova starts vs. Washington looking like yet another success story for Pirates pitching coach Ray Searage. After going 7-6 with a 4.90 ERA with the Yankees this season, Nova is 5-1 with a 2.93 ERA in nine starts with the Pirates following a trade Aug. 1. Nova has just three walks in 55 1/3 innings with Pittsburgh, helping him produce a video game-like 15.00 strikeout-to-walk ratio.GIANT STRUGGLESMadison Bumgarner (14-9, 2.57) leads San Francisco against the pesky Padres, who had beaten the Giants six straight times before losing 2-1 on Thursday night. Bumgarner is coming off a dominant start against the Dodgers, when he threw seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball in a 2-1 loss. In his six starts previous to that one, Bumgarner had struggled to a 5.30 ERA. ' ' '
